The Steam Engine Was Not So Much Invented As Industrialised
The steam engine was not so much invented as industrialised. To give credit to any one person
would be to steal credit away from its many rightful owners. The steam engine was evolved over a
time of about a hundred years by three British inventors. The first basic steam powered engine was
built by Thomas Savery in 1689.
What was used before the steam engine?
In the early days, one common way of removing the water was to use a series of buckets on a
pulley system operated by horses and was slow and ineffective, since the animals required
nourishing, veterinary care, and cover of some sort. The use of steam to pump water was patented
by Thomas Savery in 1698.The pump was exploited to draw liquid up from the coal mine.

Western civilization, which had long been agricultural, began to centre on cities as labourers who
had worked in cottage industries or on farms moved there in search of jobs.
Why did invention of the steam engine industrialise England?
The first trade to become industrialised was the textile industry. In 1771 a cotton spinning mill was
opened by Richard Arkwright, which was powered by a water mill. Later, in 1779, Samuel
Crompton invented a newer cotton spinning device called a spinning mule. Eventually, Edmund
Cartwright invented a loom that could be driven by a steam engine, this was in 1785. As a result of
these new inventions cotton manufacturing boomed. Iron production also grew promptly. In 1784 a
man named Henry Cort (1740 1800) invented a much better way of making wrought iron. Until then
men had to beat hot iron with mallets to remove contaminations. The result was a massive increase
in iron manufacturing. New factories were the result of these new advances in technology. Large
industrial buildings usually employed one central source of power to run a whole group of
machines.
How did the steam engine evolve?
The high consumption of coal which was common in Newcomen s steam engine was reduced
through improvements in engine proposal by James Watt. The low pressure engine s cylinder
confined heat insulation, and had a pumping out device for condensed water. It was during 1800
that Richard Trevithick devised engines with steam backed by

Vast Mountain Mountains
Warren Wilson. How did I end up here? I could, be anywhere else. However, Appalachia
undoubtedly has to be the perfect place to foster my curiosity of the mountains. Throughout my life
I have been interested in protecting the environment, many different avenues of art expression, and
the cultural roots of mountain people. Now, all of those subjects are covered in The Encyclopedia
of Appalachia, but I can go further to tie all of those subjects into the main topic of agriculture,
specifically sustainable agriculture, which I just so happen to be majoring in (convenient, huh?).
My appreciation for these mountains have grown so much that I want to choose a life that will

Vast mountain ranges and rocky cliffs come to mind. Those are both some obvious factors as to
why agricultural practices may be hard in the region, but other than physical boundaries, what
are the difficulties of growing in this mountainous region? I will surely need to know these if I
plan to make a living off of growing in the mountains. My fascination for how native tribes work
with the land raised the question of what crops were originally grown/are native, in Appalachia
prior to the European invasion bringing about other crops. Were these new crops brought in
essential for a growing population or were they destructive to the soil, being invasive plants?
Tying into the idea of native crops, I would love to look more into the herbs found within the
forests of Appalachia. Wanting to be a doula and homesteader, I have found interest in researching
the benefits of medicinal herbs on the pains of childbirth. Finding those herbs right here in
Appalachia would be ideal. The encyclopedia had a section entirely on mushrooms. I did not dive
into what it said because at this point I am just seeking questions. I am wondering, however, why
do mushrooms grow well here? Is it simply because of the thick canopy of the forest providing
ample shade or do these mountains contain particular nutrients necessary for mushroom growth?
My father has always shown an interest in growing shiitake mushrooms. I have never spoken to
him about what sparked his interest, but living in the Cherokee National Forest, which is
neighboring the Appalachian Mountains, I could find this information

Purpose To Go To Medical School
One of the reasons I want to go to medical school is for the opportunity to learn from bright,
experienced individuals who are passionate about medicine. For this reason, my first priority is to
attend a medical school whose faculty is committed to graduating top notch physicians who are
prepared to enter residency and practice medicine. I value clinical training opportunities and hands
on experience very highly, as I believe these will help me to develop the foundation I will need to
be an outstanding physician. My ideal school is also one that upgrades facilities and expands their
program. Technology is rapidly changing how medicine is being practiced, and, with all other
factors being equal, I will choose the more technologically advanced

Life of Pi by Yann Martel Essay
Life of Pi by Yann Martel, first published in 2002, is the story of Piscine Molitor Patel. Piscine,
later shortened by himself to Pi, is the main character, the protagonist, and throughout most of this
novel just a teenager. At the beginning of the story the reader is taken to the world of
Pondicherry, India and to the Pondicherry Zoo run by the Patel Family. The Patel family consists
of Pi s mom, Gita, his dad Santosh and his older brother Ravi. As Pi grows up he takes you
through his good and bad times, he takes you through the four religions. Yes, four! He submerges in
the realm of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Atheism. He is a Christian, Hindu, and Islamic, all
at once. He says on that, Atheists are my brothers and sisters of... Show more content on

They remain together throughout this 277 day voyage, coming across a huge ship, a man that
gets eaten by Richard, a flesh eating island, and finally Mexico. The third and final part of this
book is called Benito Juarez Infirmary, Tomatlan, Mexico. This part is a manuscript from two
workers from the Japanese Ministry of Transport, who found out that Pi finally landed. They
came to find out exactly why the ship sank. Pi doesn t know for sure why it sank, but he tells the
his story. They don t believe that he survived all that time with a Bengal tiger. So he tells them
another version just as graphic with replacing the hyena with a cook from the ship, his mom as
the orangutan, and a sailor as the hurt zebra. He of course replaced himself with the tiger. The
workers weren t thrilled with this story either but all Pi says is, In both stories the ship sinks,
my entire family dies, and I suffers (317). One replies yes, that s true. He then tells them that
since they can t tell the truth to take the story that they prefer, and go with God. This book was a
gripping story that keeps you reading from beginning to end. When I started reading this book I
received different responses, from oh it was amazing to that was pure crap. I took both opinions
into count and picked it up to start reading. The beginning started out to slow for my taste but I

David Hume
David Hume s Empiricism
Sanket Thakkar
Oakton Community College
Every philosopher begins with the premises from which he bases his entire philosophical theory.
Descartes rejects all the premises and holds innate into question. He withholds all the assumptions
and only believes in things that can be proven. His goal in subjecting everything to methodical
doubt is you don t know it is true until you have the proof. Descartes begins by doubting his own
existence and starts with the premise, I think I am therefore I am . He is not sure whether he exists
or not but the fact that he is thinking is the proof that his mind exists. Descartes is Mind Body
dualist and although mind cannot exist without a body, he believes mind and body are ... Show more

Simple ideas are copy of a single direct experience/ impression for example, idea of Mount
Everest. Complex ideas are combination of two or more copies of impressions/ experiences for
example, idea of a golden mountain. You have an idea of gold color and you have an idea about
mountain thus even though nobody has seen a golden mountain but you can have idea about a
golden mountain. According to Hume, you only know what your experience will allow you to
know. You cannot know more than what you can experience; knowledge is dependent and
derivative of experience. He says God is complex idea we don t have any proof about God s
existence or inexistence. This point of view of David Hume is completely different to Descartes
who believes in God s existence. According to David Hume, if we have idea of infinity that means
we must have impression of infinite but we cannot touch or feel infinity thus infinity is not a
simple idea. In order for infinity to be complex idea but we don t have anything that is infinite so
according to Hume, concept of infinity doesn t exist. It is just pseudo idea that we have given name
which has no relation to anything actual.
David Hume makes another distinction regarding object of cognition, anything that is thought
about. All the object of human reason or inquiry may naturally be divided into two kinds, relation
of ideas and matters of fact. David Hume uses the term Matters of fact is the kind of thing

Fairy Legends Essay
Fairy legends have been around from time immemorial in Ireland and several other countries.
These legends have been an important part of Irish life and culture. A legend, in contrast to
folklore, is meant to inform and reinforce beliefs. Legends are less about fiction and the
unbelievable, and more about the ordinary. The fairylegends in Ireland are abundant, as there are
many different tales that describe fairies and their habits distinctly. A large portion of these legends
have been told orally, so documenting them is difficult. In modern films and stories, such as
Disney, fairies are generally portrayed as being kind and helpful to humans, but according to Irish
legend, fairies are not always benevolent creatures. The tales involving... Show more content on

Sometimes, fairies offer gifts to humans. In the tale, The Little Herd Girl and the Woman from
Cnoc Aine in Fairy Legends from Donegal, a little girl is lured off by a fairy woman playing the
harp and into a fine castle. She has some bread and is sent off back home. Prior to leaving, she is
given a coin to give to her widowed mother. It is said that from then onward, her mother was
never wanting for money for the rest of her life. In another story called The Three Sneezes from
the same source, a wife is almost taken by fairies at her wedding, but a man blessed her and she
was safe aside from becoming deaf and dumb. When the same man later walked by a couple of
fairies, he heard them tell him of a cure for the woman s deafness and dumbness. He found the
herb, and the woman was cured and well once again. These tales might have been to give hope to
those that were impoverished or ill. The good fortune given by fairies in these legends are
reflective of human desire. Common themes of these types of legends include endless fortune,
magical powers, particularly bountiful harvest or healthy livestock, and goods supplied
mysteriously. However, although some dealings with fairies might lead to good fortune or
health, some people chose to avoid these dealings due to the fact that fairies can be
manipulative. Fairy gifts can be extraordinary, but taken away if the receiver does wrong by the
fairies or breaks an agreement. One unfortunate tale of an Irish piper details this. The Irish piper
overheard a beautiful fairy song, and was given the gift of playing the melody by this fairy.
However, the fairy told him that he was only allowed to play it three times before a live audience.
The piper obeyed the fairy s rule, until one night during a competition, he played the melody a
fourth time in order to win. The instant he was crowned, he fell dead on the stage because of his

A Summary Of Livy The Early History Of Ancient Rome s Rape...
It would be easy to assume that thousands of years later, the rape culture evident in ancient Rome
would have evolved, changed significantly, or quite simply been eradicated, but in this world, there
still exists many similarities between ancient Rome s rape culture and modern rape culture. In Livy
The Early History of Rome, we read the founding myths which shaped Rome. These stories
include the tale of Romulus and Remus, but I will be talking about their mother, Rhea Silvia who
was made into a Vestal Virgin, raped, and imprisoned, and how her story relates to the modern
world. Although rape is not as pivotal in modern countries narratives as it was in Rome s history,
the culture and actions towards rape have remained the similar.

Therefore, it was an honor to become one, but was it? We don t have accounts from Vestal
Virgins and more important from Rhea Silvia which could tell us about their joy or despair.
Rhea Silvia was forced into becoming a Vestal Virgin by her uncle, Amulius who wanted to
ensure his seat of power. Though he claimed it was to do her honor, her becoming a Vestal
Virgin made it unlikely for her to have children who could later take Amulius s power (Livy 34).
Rhea was forced into a life where she would have to value her virginity above everything
including her life. Though there are not as many official positions for virgins anymore, the
modern world sees a lot of girls forced to hold their virginity in high regard similar to Rhea. The
threat of someone taking your virginity is felt strongly among women in many countries today
where it could be the difference between life or death. Countries such as South Africa, Turkey,
India, Indonesia, Somalia, and many more practice virginity testing. Females grow up in a culture
where they are taught since birth to always value

The Bible and How Satan Came to Be
Introduction: I have heard that Satan has come from heaven but was never really sure. So for
my research paper I asked where Satan came from and how he was created. Answers for this
question are found in many places in the Bible. Satan was one of the highest angels until was
overcome with pride. He was thrown out, and hell was created. Hell was first for Satanbut was then
opened for everyone when Adam and Evesinned.
Bible section: There are many verses in the Bible that show how how Satan came to be. Some of
them are not straight ford but some give a good description. Most of the verses that describe
where Satan comes from are in the book of Revelation. In (Revelation 12:3) Satan appeared as a 7
headed dragon that had a crown on every head. He became so jealous and full of pride that he
threw a rebellion against God. Isaiah 14 says I will raise my throne above the stars of God. (Isaiah
14 12 15 NIV). A war broke out in Heaven, Michael and his angles fought Satan (Revelation 12:7).
This next verse proves that Satan is truly evil, It says Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the
sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give
birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. (Revelation 12:4 NIV) That
clearly shows that he wants nothing good for us and wants to destroy us. Hell was originally for
Satan only, but in Genesis God gave us the choice to live in eternally in heaven or go to hell. The

The Importance Of Vaccines In Schools

Vaccines in Schools
Vaccines are the best, cost effective way to prevent large outbreaks of diseases. Vaccines save
millions of lives each year. It is estimated that vaccines save around six to nine million people a
year (Lee Scheffler, Rosenthal, 2016). Without strong vaccinerules among children in schools, it
increases the risk of all children, decreases herd immunity, and endangers overall community health.
Vaccines are the most efficient way to preventing diseases all over the world. Vaccines date all the
way back to the 1800s when Edward Jenner created the first vaccine for smallpox (Kim, 2014).
Overtime vaccines have spread all over the world, and have become a major role in decreasing
outbreaks in deadly diseases (Lee, Scheffer Rosenthal, 2016). The more people who have been
vaccinated in one area results in a large decrease in the outbreak of disease. Therefore, this
causes less spending in public health, due to the decreases number of people with deadly diseases
entering hospitals. The first law mandating vaccines for the public was in Britain in 1840 (Kim,
2014). Vaccines have caused deadly diseases such as smallpox to be completely eradicated (Lee,
Scheffers, Rosenthal, 2016).
Furthermore, many schools in certain states are changing their rules, but some need a little more
work. As of March 2008, all states permitted medical exemptions from school immunization
requirements, 48 states allowed

Asian Pacific Americans ( Apa )
Prior to this course, I had little to no knowledge on Asian Pacific Americans (APA). After weeks of
discussing and analyzing material that dealt with the hardships that minorities such as APA
individuals faced, I can conclude that this ethnic group underwent experiences that were not too
uncommon from that of Latinos and African Americans. Since population in California today,
consist of an average of 60% Asians and Latinos as stated in the book, Learning English/Learning
America by Juana Mora, Gina Masequesmay, Eunai Shrake, and Ana S. Munoz, it is safe to say
that students in classrooms nowadays are mainly those within these ethnic groups (Mora,
Masequesmay, Shrake, and Munoz, ix). I will be focusing on three of the many stories APA and
Latino students have to share in this book, that I felt related to me most as I also, am a second
generation student.
Ideally, immigration to America has been noted as a step in the right direction for several years. The
concept of the American Dream has been one of the main reasons behind immigrants choosing to
leave their hometown and in other cases, changes in government and enslavement has led
immigrants to the States. It is no wonder why they fight through battles most would have never

an alliance between three monarchies, which were Germany, Russia and Austria Hungary. He saw
this as a means to isolate France and preserve both peace and conservative status quo (Tucker). If

They didn t have a good relationship with the Russians. This is demonstrated in the League of The

Essay on Liberal Democracy
Liberal Democracy Liberal democracy, with a capitalist economy, is the only form of social
organization that will work in this world. Socialism and Communism appear to be sound in
theory, but would never come close to achieving what capitalism does. Liberal democracy and
capitalism allow for a beneficial competition where communism does not. This competition, in the
liberal tradition, on both political and economical levels, allows for the best balance of security
and freedom to the people under the government. However, this liberal tradition does not take care
of every problem, but it does a better job than any alternative. Competition is a necessity in this
world. A more competitive market allows for a more functional... Show more content on

All of the market is voluntary, no coercion. Milton Friedman explains, Political freedom means
the absence of coercion of a man by his fellow man. There would be people trading with other
people only when they themselves benefit from the situation. This way people have the choice on
how much to trade, or to even trade at all. Everyone can benefit from a competitive market.
Friedman explains, By removing the organization of economic activity from the control of political
authority, the market eliminates this source of coercive power. It enables economic strength to be a
check to political power rather than a reinforcement. Without this sense of being forced into
situations, people are a lot happier. When people are voluntarily participating in the free market,
then the government makes money consequently. The competitive free market takes some
responsibilities from the government, so the government can run better. A more competitive free
market allows for the government to function more smoothly. Political competition is needed in
order to achieve a balance between liberty and security. Free elections are the best way to elect the
most worthy individual and to keep up competition in politics. Having senators run for elections
and compete for the people s vote, rather then a select few deciding who is elected ensures liberty
for the people. One of the most important rights an American has today is the

Childhood Obesity Epidemic, By The Encyclopedia Of Science
For the past few decades, the dire situation of obesity in America has gotten worse and is now
affecting new generations of young Americans. Every day the poor eating and physical choices
that children make can lead them to a life with diabetes, heart disease, and cancers. The unhealthy
lifestyle that children have is influenced by their parents and the society that surrounds them. This
unprecedented surge of poor lifestyle choices has lead to an epidemic that young children are now

As stated in the Encyclopedia of Science s article, obesity is affecting any child from any
ethnicity or race, age, economic backing, or region. Hispanic children, African American
children, native American children, and any other children with bad quality eating habits,
especially in the south, are at an exceptionally higher risk. The southern part of America is
known for their comfort food, which is extremely fattening, and is the reason why children
living in the south have an exceptionally higher chance of becoming obese. In the African

of developing obesity, but that doesn t mean wealthier children are immune. The site, Let s

documentation written by Athenian men, allows us to see men s portrayal of Athenian women as

Poem Analysis- Robert Fross; Robert Browning; Anne Bradstreet
Robert Frost, Out,Out
1. In line 15, Frost describes the saw as being sinister. He infers that the saw has a mind of its
own, by stating that the saw jumped out of the boy s hand and cut the boy s hand terribly. Frost
also makes it seem as if the saw is in a way, like a friend. He does this by demonstrating that using
the saw is an advantage for the boy because it is making his job ten times easier. Without the saw,
the boy would spend hours cutting through the wood. 2. In Frost s poem, the people that surround
the boy must be his family. It could also very much be friends, or members of his community, along
with the doctor and nurses working on his injury. The tone of the poem leads me to conclude that

In other words, he, the Duke, controls the Duchess; or he wishes to control his Duchess. The Duke
wouldn t want anyone to see the portrait of his Duchess, with her blushed cheeks, unless he was

though,/Taming a sea horse, thought a rarity,/ Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!
The Duke is implying, that he himself is Neptune, and his last Duchess is the sea horse. No one
could have imagined that a sea horse could be tamed, but Neptune achieved it. Identical to the way
that the last Duchess herself was tamed.
Adrienne Rich, Aunt Jennifer s Tigers,
In her poem, Aunt Jennifer s Tigers, Adrienne is describing the protagonist s feelings towards
her marriage. In lines 9 10, the protagonist feels that she is a prisoner of her marriage, and will

How Reconstruction Failed to Bring Equality to Freed Blacks
After the Civil War, the government had changed from a republican rule to a democratic rule that
had hatred towards the South because of conflicts that had arisen during the Civil War. The
Northern Republicans wanted to punish the South by forming laws that terminated slavery and
granted freed blacks the right to vote, the right to own land, the right to due process, and outlawed
discrimination based on race; all were attempts to try and end slavery by reconstructing the justice
and social and economic equality among freed blacks. In theory, the thought of reconstruction was
practical and could end slavery however, a thought is never the same when put into physical use ...

The fourteenth amendment is exclaiming that any citizen of the United States cannot be denied the
right of life, liberty, and property and cannot so be done without due process. Therefore the
fourteenth amendment grants more rights to blacks and makes blacks almost equal with whites.
In addition to the fourteenth amendment, the fifteenth amendment also encourages equal rights
such as, The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the
United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude
(Document C). What the fifteenth amendment is trying to say is that no one who is a citizen of
the United States can be denied the right to vote because of the color of his or her skin. Lastly, the
Civil Rights Act of 1875 states, That all persons within the jurisdiction of the United States shall be
entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the accommodations, advantages, facilities, and
privileges of inns, public conveyances on land and water, theaters, and other places of public

public places such as transportation, restrooms, store etcetera. Therefore, these laws have the
ability to make blacks equivalent to whites in terms of rights. However, these ideas by radical
republicans were not highly effective, as shown

Essay On I Love Lucy
Desilu s iconic show I Love Lucy did not only break the industry norm for television broadcasting
but pushed the envelope for social issues during its time but also open the door for other shows
that seemed risky. America was in the post war era and looked towards the television to stay
informed and connected. Televisionsets were quickly entering homes which became what the
radio was in 1920 s. It became a prominent product during the decade of the 50 s, for instance, 3
million TV owners and by the end, there were 55 million. The concept for the situational
comedy was nothing out of the ordinary, following a typical housewife, through comedic
hijinks, in her everyday life. Lucille s portrayal of this ditzy schemer did not exactly fit the view
of a traditional American 1950 s housewife, revealing the show s willingness to push social
issues. Lucille Ball insisted that her real life husband Desi Arnaz play her husband in the show.
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were the first on screen interracial couple. One of the biggest displays
of I Love Lucy pushing the envelope was her real life pregnancy on the show, which at the time...

Analysis Of Santa Clause Is Coming To Town
The song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a very happy and cheerful song that is played
during the month of December to bring out the Christmas spirit in people. The history behind it
is how two men got their big break and made one of the most played Christmas songs of all time.
The song was originally written by John Frederick Coots and composed by Haven Gillespie on
October 1933. Gillespie was in charge of expressing his gift of writing children s song lyrics
while Coots came up with the tune that caught the attention of young children. The two came up
with the song while riding a subway car in New York. The two men had a masterpiece in their
hands, but needed someone to produce it. Many artists passed on the song because they didn t
believe the it would hit big on the charts and would be difficult to sell, especially since it was a
song for kids. Coots at the time was a writer for Eddie Cantor and tried to persuade him to sing
the song live on his radio station. Cantor was undecided on whether to sing it, but his wife
eventually convinced him to give the song a chance. He ended up performing it live on
November 1934 on his radio station and brought huge publicity to the song. After it was aired on
the radio station, the song blew up. People from all over were requesting to hear the song over
and over again. It sold over 400,00 copies and 300,00 of those were sold within the first 24 hours.
The song made the writers millionaires with hundreds of copies being sold. It

The Legal Counsel At Baylor University
As an entity that caters to a vast array of individuals including students, faculty, staff, visitors, and
many more, colleges and institutions of higher education are highly vulnerable to be faced with
lawsuits. To provide legal counsel for the institution and those who are considered a part of the
institution, colleges and universities employ a general counsel. The general counsel at Baylor
Universityis tasked with, managing and supervising all legal affairs for the University (General
Counsel, N.D.). Two of the current lawsuits against the university are regarding alleged Title IX
violations based on how the university acted or failed to act when students reported sexual
assault claims. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the Title IX cases that
are currently pending against Baylor University, examine the issue from a local standpoint while
comparing the University of Iowa and Baylor University s general counsels, and finally to discuss
the impact of the lawsuits at a broader level.
Baylor University is currently facing three separate Title IX lawsuits, all stemming from the
university s alleged inaction and mishandling of sexual assault reports (Perez, 2016). One lawsuit
was filed by one individual, while the second lawsuit was filed by three individuals, and the third
was filed by one individual. The five individuals filing the lawsuits are female identifying students

A Comparison of Two Paintings from the Renaissance Period
Introduction This paper will compare the themes found in the paintings Madonna and Child with
St. John the Baptist and an Angel by Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini (Puligo) and Madonna
Enthroned by Giotto. Both paintings deal with fables from the Christian faith but were executed
during different periods in art. The Giotto painting was created around 1310 and the Puglio painting
was executed between 1518 1520. Here, these two paintings have similar themes both at the
extreme beginnings and endings of the Italian Renaissance, and as such they serve to present an
exceptional example of the developments in art that occurred within that time. This paper shall

John the Baptist is also allowed to stand near the holy mother and child, and an angel is present.
Because of this, the viewer contends with a literal story rather than a simple image as in Madonna
Enthroned . Also in Puligo s image, where the central figures are larger and better seen, there are
religious symbols used. The same might be true in Giotto s work but the details are harder to
distinguish.
Visual Form and Style The style and the form of these two paintings reflect the development of
the artistic techniques during the Italian Renaissance. While both reflect a Biblical theme with a
central focal point of the Madonna and Child, Madonna Enthroned has a key image that is best
viewed from a central position and Madonna and Child... has a greater degree of importance
over the majority of the surface of the canvas. In Madonna and Child... the viewer does not
perceive that an image is being forced upon them as is found in the work by Giotto. A use of
light and space is also key to preventing the Puligo piece from being forced , where the
organization of distance visibly removes the viewer from Madonna Enthroned while drawing the
viewer into the painting in Madonna and Child... . Color also serves a similar purpose, where
Giotto s work is monochromatic but ocher while Puligo s work carries a greater expression
through the detail involved. The mood of these two pieces is remarkable in that color does not play

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Marriage is a ritual that marks a change in status for a man and a woman and the acceptance by
society of the new family that is formed (Rosman Rubel, 1981). Marriage, like other customs, is
governed by rules (Rosman Rubel, 1981). Anthropology has represented marriage as the definitive
ritual and universally translatable regulative ideal of human societies (BORNEMAN, 1996).
Marriage also the act of joining two persons of opposite sex together to become as husband and

Final Paper
Anti Opium Movement, Opium War and Their Causes The main theme of 19th century was the
imperialism expansion of western capitalistic industrial nations throughout the whole world. During
this process, the conflicts between occidental imperialism powers and oriental countries never
stopped. The First Opium War, well known as the Opium War, was the war that happened during
September, 1839 to Autumn, 1842, between China and Britain. The war was initiated by the
conflicts between China and Britain on the fact that some British merchants, who worked for the
East India Company, smuggled opium to China and ignored Chinese laws. The mania of opium
smoking shocked the Chinese government and triggered the anti opium movement. Lin Zexu, a
Chinese official known as Commissioner Lin, burned out the confiscated opium at Humen. During
the war, China suffered great loss and ended up with a disastrous fiasco. The result was extremely
humiliating to China and profoundly changed the fate of China: China was compelled to sign a
series of unequal treaties, cede Hong Kong and compensate huge war indemnity. When I viewed
this miserable history of China, a question was created in my mind. Considering the great power
gap between the declining China and the rising Britain, what factors led the Chinese government to
launch the anti opium movement at the expense of triggering the Opium War? My answer is quite
explicit: the

competition with prizes to be won.
At times there are brilliant live outdoors concerts, with the local students performing the traditional
UAE dances and dedicating poetry to the day. This is sometimes ended with fasinating fireworks or
laser displays.
The history and significance
Not long ago, the UAE was a land of desert inhabited by proud and resourceful nomadic Bedouin
tribes, fishing villages and date farms. Abu Dhabi consisted of several hundred palm huts (barasti)
huts, a few coral buildings and the Ruler s Fort. Situated along the creek, Dubai was a trading
hub, providing a safe haven before the Straits of Hormuz and beyond. Life today in the Emirates
bears little resemblance to that of 40 years ago.
Parts of the UAE were settled as far back as the 3rd millennium BC and its early history fits the
nomadic, herding and fishing pattern typical of the broader region. The Bedouin tribe was the
principal building block of UAE society. Bedouin, which means desert dweller, lived in varied
terrain moving between the ocean (where pearl diving and fishing were the main forms of
sustenance), the desert (moving as nomads for

Ombudsman s Contribution to the Task of Ensuring that Government Decision Making is
Conducted in a Defensible Way
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Adminstration (PCA) was set up under the Parliamentary
Commissioner Act 1967 as a result of the Crichel Down affair in 1954. It was thought that pre
existing judicial and parliamentary remedies did not provide adequate redress for members of the
public who suffered as a result of maladministration in central government. No action was being
taken towards defective administrative workings, either because it fell outside the jurisdiction of
the courts or because MPs did not have sufficient powers to investigate it satisfactorily.
The Ombudsman stands as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These include extradition and fugitive offenders, the investigation of crime by or on behalf of the
Home Office, security of the States, action in matters relating to contractual or commercial
activities, court proceedings and personnal matters of armed forces, teachers, the Civil Service or
police. The government has always resisted the extension of the Ombudsman system into these
areas. Furthermore, Schedule 2 does not include public corporations, tribunals, the Criminal Injuries
Compensation Board or, crucially, the police.
A further important limitation, the system of making the complaint through a Member of
Parliament, has been much criticised: it is thought that this screening of complaints does not serve
the best interests of complainant. This is where direct access to the ombudsman is denied and the
MP is made to be the middleman. The involvement of MPs in the process may mean an inadequate
working system since MPs do not possess the power to investigate in great detail as to scrutinise the
matter at hand to its depths.
Another problem that is seen within the role of PCA is also due to the lack of power to award
remedy. However, the fact that the PCA operates informally and privately has been thought to
enhance his powers of persuasion. A good example is that of the Ostler case (1977), where the

Project Management Essay
Project Management
Although a development team does most of the work, it is the project manager that is running the
development process. All human activity that involves carrying out a project needs a plan. We
call this Project Management. But there is a big difference between projects that involve one or
two people and projects that involve large numbers of people. There is always a smaller group of
individuals behind all larger groups that is planning, directing, and motivating those people. There
are three main parts to project management: start date, finish date, and all the tasks that need to be
carried out. When the plan starts to involve different things happening at different times, most of

There is room to be creative and in many aspects of planning and leading.
The first step in planning a project could be specification. This is a term that can be defined as
stating the problem or what is trying to be solved by this particular project. There can be a lot of
confusion in this stage of project planning, such as the misunderstanding of intent (Winning Project
Management). A way to avoid such conflict is to maybe write out an agreement before the project
showing that everyone understands exactly what is to be expected. The next step would be
structure. Having decided the many specifications, it is time to figure out exactly what needs to
be done and how to do it. There has to be some kind of framework built by the manager. Structure
also links all of the tasks together instead of everything being done on individual basis. This
creates a sense of unity among your project team. To move forward with the planning process,
you need to transform the specifications into a complete set of tasks that are linked together. If
the planning of a project becomes too complicated then that means that the tasks need to be
broken down into even smaller ones. This is also a great way to learn each and every detail of the
project. Planning too much detail could be a fault by the project manager as well. You should just
break it down as far enough for your team to understand it. The next stage would be task

What Do Successful Policies Teach Us About Our Politics...
What do Successful Policies teach us about our Politics and Ourselves?
Introduction
Every American seems to have their own belief and idea of how to help our country continue to
grow and be successful. Whether or not each individual idea is helpful or beneficial to the country
is another story but, policy is the way for our country to continue to develop. Throughout
American history politicians have used their ideas for new policies to help their campaign and
in turn elect them into office. They can not always deliver their promises for change in part due
to the separation of powers in the United States which creates multiple veto points for policy. As
a country we do not remember policies that have little buzz or attention but rather the ones that
were passed after a buildup of continued conversation or debate. These conversations can be
sparked by a particular event or problem. As Marc Landry said Greatness is rare and hostage to
fortune. Crisis creates its opportunity. Policies can be implemented to help solve these problems.
As a society we would not complain about a problem that we did not care about and to take the
next step we would not display effort for change unless we truly believed it would help. Successful
policies teach us what those in power honestly care about and what we truly care about.
Why Policy? For a policy to be on the agenda usually one or more of four particular items need to
be in play. Crisis, interests group, realigning elections and

I remember when I first came to nova for shark preview, I saw advertisements posters for their
upcoming events. This memory always stuck with me as I attend nova. I chose this club to
cover for the project because I thought it would be interesting and much different compared to
my high school experience. I attended the interest meeting on September 13, 2016 during the
lunch break hour. I arrived a bit late and the meeting started. They were introducing the different
officers and their positions and responsibilities. The meeting then proceeded with information on
how to join and different volunteer events they participate. For example, they take part in
volunteering at the children s hospital as a group and also help tutor students at the elementary
school as well. At the end of the meeting they notified the new club members of possible open
leadership positions in the club. I spoke with one of the club officers promptly after the meeting
about the leadership position and I also told her my interests in the club. After I grabbed a few

Examples Of Mcmurphy In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
In dark times mankind often finds itself looking to a higher power for help or guidance. A sort
of savior to save them from whatever horrid situations soceity drops on them and bring them to
better times. A perfect example of this is in Ken Kesey s One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest.
Where R.P McMurphy is portrayed as a Christ like figure there to save the ward and guide them
from hellish place it is. To guide them from The processed control of the combine and of the
devilish Nurse Ratched. Throughout the novel, Kesey alludes to all of the hell like characteristics

Oso Logos
I would like to address the lack of partnership with the Institute for Faith and Learning. This issue
has already been discussed at length with Dr. Kevin Jackson and a compromise had been reached.
As far as we understood, the partnership with the Institute for Faith and Learning was suggested as
a form of oversight. It is understandable that Baylor has no interest in condoning a problematically
radical or heretical religious group. Oso Logos is by no means such a group but we understand that
precautions must be taken.
The problem with such a partnership is that it does not mesh well with our eventual goals. Once
we have proven through a few years of success that our organization can be a positive addition to
student life, we hope to reconnect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

example, our faculty advisor Dr. Keith Shubert is an ordained Baptist minister!
That being said, we are willing to look for individuals from a broader ranger or departments to
join our Advisory Board. There are some individuals who have already expressed interest in our
group. Two examples are Dr. Francis Beckworth from the philosophy department and Professor
James Wren from the Baylor Law School.
Although it is important not to underestimate the breadth and width of the knowledge and
wisdom currently present on our Faculty board, we would like to expand that further as
opportunities allow. Practically speaking, there is a limit to how many faculty members can be
on an advisory board. Adding two more may be possible but we feel that beyond that, the board
may become overcrowded. We want to respect the time each of these individuals dedicates to the
group, not waste it by having too many advisors. We would appreciate you suggestions on finding
the balance between a diverse group and an oversized crowd.
We hope we adequately addressed your questions. Please let us know if we need to further clarify

Immigration On The United States
Immigration has emerged as a hot topic of concern over the last couple of decades but in reality
the problem of immigration goes far beyond the realms of recent decades. With President Trump
s intentions to build a wall to stop Mexicans from entering U.S. to the proposed ban of 7 nations,
immigration has never been a more prevalent problem. The recent years however have given birth
to a form of immigration that was not considered to be dominant before, refugees and displaced
people are viewed differently from people who colonized various parts of the world in the early
17th, 18th and 19th century. Today when one thinks of immigrants, Middle Eastern, Indians and

Infant Mortality Within the United States Essay
Infant Mortality Within the United States
Herein I briefly overview the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) within the United States. Initially, I
discuss specific causes of infant death and then, contributing factors which put babies at risk. Next,
the distribution of various IMR is surveyed on a state to state basis. States possessing the ten
highest infant mortality rates are discussed, including possible reasons for higher IMR. In addition,
those states with the ten lowest IMR are mentioned. In conclusion, I consider preventative measures
for minimizing the number of babies that die each year.

provides an opportunity for students to know and understand three of these guidelines. First,
students will know how to use maps and graphical tools to acquire, process, and report information
(number one of the National Standards). Hot links connect data presented throughout the text to pie
graphs, bar graphs, charts, tables, and a map located at appropriate web sites. Second, the students
will know and understand that people define regions and will be able to use them to interpret the
world s (or the United States) changing complexity (number five of the National Standards). For
various reasons infant mortality rate within the United States is higher among regions in which
certain populations live. Knowledge concerning the distribution of these populations facilitates the
students understanding of IMR distribution. Third, the student will know and understand that
culture and experience influence people s perceptions of places and experiences (number six of the
National Standards). People tend to form opinions about other people and places based on their
own background and biases. Students must realize and contend with factors that influence their
perception, thus avoiding the dangers of egocentric and ethnocentric stereotyping,... and engage in

My Middle School
Going into my middle school years I was so scared of what was to come. People would tell me

friends, went on amazing trips, and learned fascinating things. My trip to Spain was full of culture
I had never experienced and my cruise was spectacular with sights of beaches and landmarks that
were beautiful.
Spain had always been on my bucket list to visit ever since I was little and saw pictures of the
country s beautiful architecture. One month before spring break my mom surprised me with tickets
to Madrid and Barcelona! I was so ecstatic, I had to start getting prepared right away. The time
eventually came and there I was standing in the Madrid airport after 8hours of being confined in
an airplane seat. The culture was already around my mom and I as we exited the airport. Spanish
music was booming everywhere, colorful buildings, and city lights made our drive to the hotel a
spectacular show.
Throughout our stay in Madrid my mom and I tasted amazing cuisine from restaurants and the
market of San Miguel. The market was full of different meats, fish, vegetables, exotic drinks, and
tapas, which are small dishes. The market was so crowed with people you couldn t find a place to

Political Parties And The Uk
What is the purpose of political parties in the UK?
The purpose of political parties in the UK is to ensure political choice for example choosing
different leaders, ideas and policies. Another purpose that political parties in the UK attempt to
ensure that will be covered during this essay is political participation as parties are a way to be
involved in the process without other than voting. Parties also have a similar recruitment to that of
the PM this means that parties are like training roles. Parties also have several functions in the
UK such as a direct channel of communication between leaders and supporters this purpose is
very valuable when party leaders attempt to get views and policies across. They also provide
accountability because they show who is in charge of the parties this helps the voters and
supporters understand who is in control. I will look into these points as a way to show the purpose
of political parties and look to further on these points in detail and describe in depth.
A main purpose of political parties in the UK is political choice which means that political parties
enforce the ability to choose between various leaders, ideas and policies. This is in turn influences
the backbone of the political parties and therefore shapes the future of them without political choice
parties would be run not by the people the public want but by people placed into these roles. This in
turn without choice would mean the public might be against the people in

Allowing teens to purchase violent or mature rated video games will increase the sales of the
game purchased and violent video games are known as a stress reliever.
History
Violence in video games dates all the way back to 1976. In 1976, there was an arcade game
called Death Race, and it was about running over stickmen with a car. The game was eventually
banned due to the violence it displayed. (Homeslice, Death Race (Game) , 2014) Back in the
late 70 s to the early 90 s, video games did not have a rating. There weren t a lot of violent video
games for home consoles at that time, and violent games that were released was usually
unlicensed or unofficial. According to Ryan Lamble, some of the earliest violent video games
were Chiller, Splatterhouse, and Jack the Ripper. (Lamble, The evolution of 80s videogame gore
and mayhem , 2013)
In 1994, a video game rating system known as ESRB was established due to gory and violent
games such as Mortal Kombat and Night Trap. The ESRB decides what age or ages a video
game should be appropriate for. The ESRB rating categories ranged from kids to adults to
mature. ESRB. SEARCH ESRB RATINGS. ESRB Ratings. N.p., n.d. Web. 08 May 2017. Today,
the ESRB rating still exists and recently the ESRB expanded to mobile games and apps. The
ESRB rating system for video games will exist in the future and it will continue to expand.
Problem Statement
The issue is underage teens are not allowed to purchase mature or violent video games due to

The Causes And Consequences Of The Great Famine
Food is the most colorful part of the day. With its gastronomic range, the possibilities are endless.
Everyone in the world depends on food, whether to experience that burst of flavor in the mouth or
to survive. But when there is a shortage of food, what is to blame? The people who eat and
cultivate it? Or factors outside their control? The Great Famineis an example of this question.
The Great Famine was caused by blight that accidently came from America and affected the
potatoes growing in Ireland and in turn, affected the Irish. This was especially hard on the Irish
because in 1845, the potato was their main source of food. They had an average of 14 spuds a day
so they relied heavily on them. Potatoes only lasted two to three months so ... Show more content on

The farmers were the first to emigrate via steam boats to England and Scotland. They were the
wealthier people but as time passed, the people emigrating became poorer. 75% were laborers and
servants. These kinds of people found it hard to pay for the ride over to America. But it didn t
matter. 1 ВЅ million left Ireland in 1847 1851 for NY. Economic expansion in the US with
industrial depression in Ireland increased migration. The fees to cross the Atlantic Ocean were
high and the Parliament regulated it. Adult was single soul and children under 12 were half
soul. It was hard to tell who was what age because of lack of passports. At first when they left,
they were jubilant. But there were too many on the ships and it was like hell on sea. The voyage
took about six weeks or three months. There were too few doctors for medical inspection so
many that were on the ships were sick. The sick were sent to St. John as a dumping ground yet
they all couldn t be regulated and a plethora died on the ships. Many were so used to death and
inhumane conditions at sea that they didn t care if they were sleeping next to a corpse. They were
without fear or emotion (BBC, 1995). When people left, it was a chain migration (Mulrooney, pg.

relative waiting. The movement depended on the placement of family. They

Grendel s Presentation Of The Monster In Beowulf
Beowulf is described as the most heroic man of the Anglo Saxons, he was important and needed by
his people, known as courageous and strong. He was their hero, but the movie shows a different
side.
Both the story and the poem tell the story of Beowulf sailing all the way from Sweden and is
known as the hero to all Danes when he kills a terrorizing monster named Grendel. Both Genres are
based in Denmark home to Danes.
The biggest differences between the movie and the poem are how the monsters are portrayed and
how Hrothgar is characterized, and also the role of women.
Unlike the novel, the monsters are portrayed differently in the movie. However, in the novel,
grendel represent something more. He was pure evil showing no remorse, angry toward mankind
and in the movie he s more sympathetic, baby like. Grendel s father was Hrothgar in the movie,
unlike the story he was the son of Cain. Secondly, the dragon in the movie is the son of Beowulf
which he goes after and his kingdom as well to kill and destroy everything he desires. The way
the monsters are portrayed seem like it tries to switch up the way we expect to see the movie,
surprising us with the way the monsters act in the movie being described ... Show more content on

For example, Hrothgar is messy and a drunk in the movie not showing any respect towards his

goodbye with no one knowing, as he tells Beowulf that he would become king once Hrothgar time
came to an end, he then walks into his room and jumps off the balcony, committing suicide.
Something that did not happen in the poem, he sends off Beowulf so there were various
differences how Hrothgar was portrayed between the book and movie. Overall, this difference
made the movie a bit more

Theories Of Schizophrenia

Genes have been known to play an active role in schizophrenia. It is difficult to ascertain the

history of schizophrenia and given the above facts, a direct relationship between schizophrenia and
genes cannot be ignored.
Additionally, environmental causes. Environmental factors have been found playing a very vital
role in the development of these diseases the living environment of even prenatal stress has been
found as contributory factors. Also, if the mother has been constantly under stress or threat while

Different Types Of Economics Within The Game Show Industry
The business that I have chosen for this project is TV Game Shows. Over the next few pages, I
will show different types of economics within the game show industry.
Cash prizes are paid by the show, and the money comes from the producers, who are paid by the
advertisers/network. There can be a couple of safeguards that make this a little easier for the shows:
They can have an insurance policy to protect them from huge losses. For example, the insurance
company says, we ve studied the odds of your game, and we ll sell you a policy for $200,000 up
front, that pays out full prize money any time someone wins $100,000 or more during this season
of the show. Obviously this is all about a smart insurance company who has studied the gameplay
and sorted out the odds of how many players will win big, but the point is that the show doesn t
have to worry about it. They can let the insurance company work it out, and the show then has a
nice fixed cost expense they can reliably drop into their production budget and not think about it.
For really big prizes ($1,000,000), shows may pay similar to a lottery, where the money is in a
fund that pays over x amount of years, or the winner can take a reduced lump sum immediately.
For example, if you were to win $1 million on a show, they might tell you (after the show is done
taping) okay! We can give you $50,000 a year for the next 20 years, or we can pay you $450,000
lump sum right now and that s all you get.
And of course,

  • 2. The Steam Engine Was Not So Much Invented As Industrialised The steam engine was not so much invented as industrialised. To give credit to any one person would be to steal credit away from its many rightful owners. The steam engine was evolved over a time of about a hundred years by three British inventors. The first basic steam powered engine was built by Thomas Savery in 1689. What was used before the steam engine? In the early days, one common way of removing the water was to use a series of buckets on a pulley system operated by horses and was slow and ineffective, since the animals required nourishing, veterinary care, and cover of some sort. The use of steam to pump water was patented by Thomas Savery in 1698.The pump was exploited to draw liquid up from the coal mine. Although, the vacuum ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Western civilization, which had long been agricultural, began to centre on cities as labourers who had worked in cottage industries or on farms moved there in search of jobs. Why did invention of the steam engine industrialise England? The first trade to become industrialised was the textile industry. In 1771 a cotton spinning mill was opened by Richard Arkwright, which was powered by a water mill. Later, in 1779, Samuel Crompton invented a newer cotton spinning device called a spinning mule. Eventually, Edmund Cartwright invented a loom that could be driven by a steam engine, this was in 1785. As a result of these new inventions cotton manufacturing boomed. Iron production also grew promptly. In 1784 a man named Henry Cort (1740 1800) invented a much better way of making wrought iron. Until then men had to beat hot iron with mallets to remove contaminations. The result was a massive increase in iron manufacturing. New factories were the result of these new advances in technology. Large industrial buildings usually employed one central source of power to run a whole group of machines. How did the steam engine evolve? The high consumption of coal which was common in Newcomen s steam engine was reduced through improvements in engine proposal by James Watt. The low pressure engine s cylinder confined heat insulation, and had a pumping out device for condensed water. It was during 1800 that Richard Trevithick devised engines with steam backed by ... • 3. Vast Mountain Mountains Warren Wilson. How did I end up here? I could, be anywhere else. However, Appalachia undoubtedly has to be the perfect place to foster my curiosity of the mountains. Throughout my life I have been interested in protecting the environment, many different avenues of art expression, and the cultural roots of mountain people. Now, all of those subjects are covered in The Encyclopedia of Appalachia, but I can go further to tie all of those subjects into the main topic of agriculture, specifically sustainable agriculture, which I just so happen to be majoring in (convenient, huh?). My appreciation for these mountains have grown so much that I want to choose a life that will work mutualistically with the mountains to not only accept the bounty they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vast mountain ranges and rocky cliffs come to mind. Those are both some obvious factors as to why agricultural practices may be hard in the region, but other than physical boundaries, what are the difficulties of growing in this mountainous region? I will surely need to know these if I plan to make a living off of growing in the mountains. My fascination for how native tribes work with the land raised the question of what crops were originally grown/are native, in Appalachia prior to the European invasion bringing about other crops. Were these new crops brought in essential for a growing population or were they destructive to the soil, being invasive plants? Tying into the idea of native crops, I would love to look more into the herbs found within the forests of Appalachia. Wanting to be a doula and homesteader, I have found interest in researching the benefits of medicinal herbs on the pains of childbirth. Finding those herbs right here in Appalachia would be ideal. The encyclopedia had a section entirely on mushrooms. I did not dive into what it said because at this point I am just seeking questions. I am wondering, however, why do mushrooms grow well here? Is it simply because of the thick canopy of the forest providing ample shade or do these mountains contain particular nutrients necessary for mushroom growth? My father has always shown an interest in growing shiitake mushrooms. I have never spoken to him about what sparked his interest, but living in the Cherokee National Forest, which is neighboring the Appalachian Mountains, I could find this information ... For this reason, my first priority is to attend a medical school whose faculty is committed to graduating top notch physicians who are prepared to enter residency and practice medicine. I value clinical training opportunities and hands on experience very highly, as I believe these will help me to develop the foundation I will need to be an outstanding physician. My ideal school is also one that upgrades facilities and expands their program. Technology is rapidly changing how medicine is being practiced, and, with all other factors being equal, I will choose the more technologically advanced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Life of Pi by Yann Martel Essay Life of Pi by Yann Martel, first published in 2002, is the story of Piscine Molitor Patel. Piscine, later shortened by himself to Pi, is the main character, the protagonist, and throughout most of this novel just a teenager. At the beginning of the story the reader is taken to the world of Pondicherry, India and to the Pondicherry Zoo run by the Patel Family. The Patel family consists of Pi s mom, Gita, his dad Santosh and his older brother Ravi. As Pi grows up he takes you through his good and bad times, he takes you through the four religions. Yes, four! He submerges in the realm of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Atheism. He is a Christian, Hindu, and Islamic, all at once. He says on that, Atheists are my brothers and sisters of... The third and final part of this book is called Benito Juarez Infirmary, Tomatlan, Mexico. This part is a manuscript from two workers from the Japanese Ministry of Transport, who found out that Pi finally landed. They came to find out exactly why the ship sank. Pi doesn t know for sure why it sank, but he tells the his story. They don t believe that he survived all that time with a Bengal tiger. So he tells them another version just as graphic with replacing the hyena with a cook from the ship, his mom as the orangutan, and a sailor as the hurt zebra. He of course replaced himself with the tiger. The workers weren t thrilled with this story either but all Pi says is, In both stories the ship sinks, my entire family dies, and I suffers (317). One replies yes, that s true. He then tells them that since they can t tell the truth to take the story that they prefer, and go with God. This book was a gripping story that keeps you reading from beginning to end. When I started reading this book I received different responses, from oh it was amazing to that was pure crap. I took both opinions into count and picked it up to start reading. The beginning started out to slow for my taste but I stayed with it, eventually I got immersed in the story. • 6. David Hume David Hume s Empiricism Sanket Thakkar Oakton Community College Every philosopher begins with the premises from which he bases his entire philosophical theory. Descartes rejects all the premises and holds innate into question. He withholds all the assumptions and only believes in things that can be proven. His goal in subjecting everything to methodical doubt is you don t know it is true until you have the proof. Descartes begins by doubting his own existence and starts with the premise, I think I am therefore I am . He is not sure whether he exists or not but the fact that he is thinking is the proof that his mind exists. Descartes is Mind Body dualist and although mind cannot exist without a body, he believes mind and body are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Simple ideas are copy of a single direct experience/ impression for example, idea of Mount Everest. Complex ideas are combination of two or more copies of impressions/ experiences for example, idea of a golden mountain. You have an idea of gold color and you have an idea about mountain thus even though nobody has seen a golden mountain but you can have idea about a golden mountain. According to Hume, you only know what your experience will allow you to know. You cannot know more than what you can experience; knowledge is dependent and derivative of experience. He says God is complex idea we don t have any proof about God s existence or inexistence. This point of view of David Hume is completely different to Descartes who believes in God s existence. According to David Hume, if we have idea of infinity that means we must have impression of infinite but we cannot touch or feel infinity thus infinity is not a simple idea. In order for infinity to be complex idea but we don t have anything that is infinite so according to Hume, concept of infinity doesn t exist. It is just pseudo idea that we have given name which has no relation to anything actual. David Hume makes another distinction regarding object of cognition, anything that is thought about. All the object of human reason or inquiry may naturally be divided into two kinds, relation of ideas and matters of fact. David Hume uses the term Matters of fact is the kind of thing ... • 7. Fairy Legends Essay Fairy legends have been around from time immemorial in Ireland and several other countries. These legends have been an important part of Irish life and culture. A legend, in contrast to folklore, is meant to inform and reinforce beliefs. Legends are less about fiction and the unbelievable, and more about the ordinary. The fairylegends in Ireland are abundant, as there are many different tales that describe fairies and their habits distinctly. A large portion of these legends have been told orally, so documenting them is difficult. In modern films and stories, such as Disney, fairies are generally portrayed as being kind and helpful to humans, but according to Irish legend, fairies are not always benevolent creatures. The tales involving... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sometimes, fairies offer gifts to humans. In the tale, The Little Herd Girl and the Woman from Cnoc Aine in Fairy Legends from Donegal, a little girl is lured off by a fairy woman playing the harp and into a fine castle. She has some bread and is sent off back home. Prior to leaving, she is given a coin to give to her widowed mother. It is said that from then onward, her mother was never wanting for money for the rest of her life. In another story called The Three Sneezes from the same source, a wife is almost taken by fairies at her wedding, but a man blessed her and she was safe aside from becoming deaf and dumb. When the same man later walked by a couple of fairies, he heard them tell him of a cure for the woman s deafness and dumbness. He found the herb, and the woman was cured and well once again. These tales might have been to give hope to those that were impoverished or ill. The good fortune given by fairies in these legends are reflective of human desire. Common themes of these types of legends include endless fortune, magical powers, particularly bountiful harvest or healthy livestock, and goods supplied mysteriously. However, although some dealings with fairies might lead to good fortune or health, some people chose to avoid these dealings due to the fact that fairies can be manipulative. Fairy gifts can be extraordinary, but taken away if the receiver does wrong by the fairies or breaks an agreement. One unfortunate tale of an Irish piper details this. The Irish piper overheard a beautiful fairy song, and was given the gift of playing the melody by this fairy. However, the fairy told him that he was only allowed to play it three times before a live audience. The piper obeyed the fairy s rule, until one night during a competition, he played the melody a fourth time in order to win. The instant he was crowned, he fell dead on the stage because of his ... • 8. A Summary Of Livy The Early History Of Ancient Rome s Rape... It would be easy to assume that thousands of years later, the rape culture evident in ancient Rome would have evolved, changed significantly, or quite simply been eradicated, but in this world, there still exists many similarities between ancient Rome s rape culture and modern rape culture. In Livy The Early History of Rome, we read the founding myths which shaped Rome. These stories include the tale of Romulus and Remus, but I will be talking about their mother, Rhea Silvia who was made into a Vestal Virgin, raped, and imprisoned, and how her story relates to the modern world. Although rape is not as pivotal in modern countries narratives as it was in Rome s history, the culture and actions towards rape have remained the similar. The Vestal Virgins were priestesses who were crucial in Roman... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, it was an honor to become one, but was it? We don t have accounts from Vestal Virgins and more important from Rhea Silvia which could tell us about their joy or despair. Rhea Silvia was forced into becoming a Vestal Virgin by her uncle, Amulius who wanted to ensure his seat of power. Though he claimed it was to do her honor, her becoming a Vestal Virgin made it unlikely for her to have children who could later take Amulius s power (Livy 34). Rhea was forced into a life where she would have to value her virginity above everything including her life. Though there are not as many official positions for virgins anymore, the modern world sees a lot of girls forced to hold their virginity in high regard similar to Rhea. The threat of someone taking your virginity is felt strongly among women in many countries today where it could be the difference between life or death. Countries such as South Africa, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Somalia, and many more practice virginity testing. Females grow up in a culture where they are taught since birth to always value ... • 9. The Bible and How Satan Came to Be Introduction: I have heard that Satan has come from heaven but was never really sure. So for my research paper I asked where Satan came from and how he was created. Answers for this question are found in many places in the Bible. Satan was one of the highest angels until was overcome with pride. He was thrown out, and hell was created. Hell was first for Satanbut was then opened for everyone when Adam and Evesinned. Bible section: There are many verses in the Bible that show how how Satan came to be. Some of them are not straight ford but some give a good description. Most of the verses that describe where Satan comes from are in the book of Revelation. In (Revelation 12:3) Satan appeared as a 7 headed dragon that had a crown on every head. He became so jealous and full of pride that he threw a rebellion against God. Isaiah 14 says I will raise my throne above the stars of God. (Isaiah 14 12 15 NIV). A war broke out in Heaven, Michael and his angles fought Satan (Revelation 12:7). This next verse proves that Satan is truly evil, It says Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. (Revelation 12:4 NIV) That clearly shows that he wants nothing good for us and wants to destroy us. Hell was originally for Satan only, but in Genesis God gave us the choice to live in eternally in heaven or go to hell. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Importance Of Vaccines In Schools Hastings Wagamon Eng. Comp. 1 Dr. Burke 12/5/2017 Vaccines in Schools Vaccines are the best, cost effective way to prevent large outbreaks of diseases. Vaccines save millions of lives each year. It is estimated that vaccines save around six to nine million people a year (Lee Scheffler, Rosenthal, 2016). Without strong vaccinerules among children in schools, it increases the risk of all children, decreases herd immunity, and endangers overall community health. Vaccines are the most efficient way to preventing diseases all over the world. Vaccines date all the way back to the 1800s when Edward Jenner created the first vaccine for smallpox (Kim, 2014). Overtime vaccines have spread all over the world, and have become a major role in decreasing outbreaks in deadly diseases (Lee, Scheffer Rosenthal, 2016). The more people who have been vaccinated in one area results in a large decrease in the outbreak of disease. Therefore, this causes less spending in public health, due to the decreases number of people with deadly diseases entering hospitals. The first law mandating vaccines for the public was in Britain in 1840 (Kim, 2014). Vaccines have caused deadly diseases such as smallpox to be completely eradicated (Lee, Scheffers, Rosenthal, 2016). Furthermore, many schools in certain states are changing their rules, but some need a little more work. As of March 2008, all states permitted medical exemptions from school immunization requirements, 48 states allowed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Asian Pacific Americans ( Apa ) Prior to this course, I had little to no knowledge on Asian Pacific Americans (APA). After weeks of discussing and analyzing material that dealt with the hardships that minorities such as APA individuals faced, I can conclude that this ethnic group underwent experiences that were not too uncommon from that of Latinos and African Americans. Since population in California today, consist of an average of 60% Asians and Latinos as stated in the book, Learning English/Learning America by Juana Mora, Gina Masequesmay, Eunai Shrake, and Ana S. Munoz, it is safe to say that students in classrooms nowadays are mainly those within these ethnic groups (Mora, Masequesmay, Shrake, and Munoz, ix). The foreign policies of Bismarck were very strategic and peaceful. Bismarck prevented bloodshed by creating the League of the Three Emperors. This was an alliance between three monarchies, which were Germany, Russia and Austria Hungary. He saw this as a means to isolate France and preserve both peace and conservative status quo (Tucker). If he did not take this action, then France could have used Russia and Austria Hungary as allies. This would make France more powerful than Germany militarily. Socialism and Communism appear to be sound in theory, but would never come close to achieving what capitalism does. Liberal democracy and capitalism allow for a beneficial competition where communism does not. This competition, in the liberal tradition, on both political and economical levels, allows for the best balance of security and freedom to the people under the government. However, this liberal tradition does not take care of every problem, but it does a better job than any alternative. Competition is a necessity in this world. Milton Friedman explains, Political freedom means the absence of coercion of a man by his fellow man. There would be people trading with other people only when they themselves benefit from the situation. This way people have the choice on how much to trade, or to even trade at all. Everyone can benefit from a competitive market. Friedman explains, By removing the organization of economic activity from the control of political authority, the market eliminates this source of coercive power. It enables economic strength to be a check to political power rather than a reinforcement. Without this sense of being forced into situations, people are a lot happier. When people are voluntarily participating in the free market, then the government makes money consequently. The competitive free market takes some responsibilities from the government, so the government can run better. A more competitive free market allows for the government to function more smoothly. Political competition is needed in order to achieve a balance between liberty and security. Free elections are the best way to elect the most worthy individual and to keep up competition in politics. Having senators run for elections and compete for the people s vote, rather then a select few deciding who is elected ensures liberty for the people. Hispanic children, African American children, native American children, and any other children with bad quality eating habits, especially in the south, are at an exceptionally higher risk. The southern part of America is known for their comfort food, which is extremely fattening, and is the reason why children living in the south have an exceptionally higher chance of becoming obese. Analysis Of Santa Clause Is Coming To Town The song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a very happy and cheerful song that is played during the month of December to bring out the Christmas spirit in people. The history behind it is how two men got their big break and made one of the most played Christmas songs of all time. The song was originally written by John Frederick Coots and composed by Haven Gillespie on October 1933. Gillespie was in charge of expressing his gift of writing children s song lyrics while Coots came up with the tune that caught the attention of young children. The two came up with the song while riding a subway car in New York. The two men had a masterpiece in their hands, but needed someone to produce it. Many artists passed on the song because they didn t believe the it would hit big on the charts and would be difficult to sell, especially since it was a song for kids. Coots at the time was a writer for Eddie Cantor and tried to persuade him to sing the song live on his radio station. Cantor was undecided on whether to sing it, but his wife eventually convinced him to give the song a chance. He ended up performing it live on November 1934 on his radio station and brought huge publicity to the song. After it was aired on the radio station, the song blew up. Anti Opium Movement, Opium War And Their Causes Haoyang Fan MMW 14 Summer 2015 July 23, 2015 TA: Joel Palhegyi Final Paper Anti Opium Movement, Opium War and Their Causes The main theme of 19th century was the imperialism expansion of western capitalistic industrial nations throughout the whole world. During this process, the conflicts between occidental imperialism powers and oriental countries never stopped. The First Opium War, well known as the Opium War, was the war that happened during September, 1839 to Autumn, 1842, between China and Britain. The war was initiated by the conflicts between China and Britain on the fact that some British merchants, who worked for the East India Company, smuggled opium to China and ignored Chinese laws. The mania of opium smoking shocked the Chinese government and triggered the anti opium movement. Lin Zexu, a Chinese official known as Commissioner Lin, burned out the confiscated opium at Humen. During the war, China suffered great loss and ended up with a disastrous fiasco. The result was extremely humiliating to China and profoundly changed the fate of China: China was compelled to sign a series of unequal treaties, cede Hong Kong and compensate huge war indemnity. When I viewed this miserable history of China, a question was created in my mind. Considering the great power gap between the declining China and the rising Britain, what factors led the Chinese government to launch the anti opium movement at the expense of triggering the Opium War? My answer is quite explicit: the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The history and significance Not long ago, the UAE was a land of desert inhabited by proud and resourceful nomadic Bedouin tribes, fishing villages and date farms. Abu Dhabi consisted of several hundred palm huts (barasti) huts, a few coral buildings and the Ruler s Fort. Situated along the creek, Dubai was a trading hub, providing a safe haven before the Straits of Hormuz and beyond. Life today in the Emirates bears little resemblance to that of 40 years ago. Parts of the UAE were settled as far back as the 3rd millennium BC and its early history fits the nomadic, herding and fishing pattern typical of the broader region. The Bedouin tribe was the principal building block of UAE society. Ombudsman s Contribution to the Task of Ensuring that Government Decision Making is Conducted in a Defensible Way The Parliamentary Commissioner for Adminstration (PCA) was set up under the Parliamentary Commissioner Act 1967 as a result of the Crichel Down affair in 1954. It was thought that pre existing judicial and parliamentary remedies did not provide adequate redress for members of the public who suffered as a result of maladministration in central government. No action was being taken towards defective administrative workings, either because it fell outside the jurisdiction of the courts or because MPs did not have sufficient powers to investigate it satisfactorily. The government has always resisted the extension of the Ombudsman system into these areas. Furthermore, Schedule 2 does not include public corporations, tribunals, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board or, crucially, the police. A further important limitation, the system of making the complaint through a Member of Parliament, has been much criticised: it is thought that this screening of complaints does not serve the best interests of complainant. This is where direct access to the ombudsman is denied and the MP is made to be the middleman. The involvement of MPs in the process may mean an inadequate working system since MPs do not possess the power to investigate in great detail as to scrutinise the matter at hand to its depths. Another problem that is seen within the role of PCA is also due to the lack of power to award remedy. However, the fact that the PCA operates informally and privately has been thought to enhance his powers of persuasion. A good example is that of the Ostler case (1977), where the Department of ... There is room to be creative and in many aspects of planning and leading. The first step in planning a project could be specification. This is a term that can be defined as stating the problem or what is trying to be solved by this particular project. There can be a lot of confusion in this stage of project planning, such as the misunderstanding of intent (Winning Project Management). A way to avoid such conflict is to maybe write out an agreement before the project showing that everyone understands exactly what is to be expected. The next step would be structure. Having decided the many specifications, it is time to figure out exactly what needs to be done and how to do it. There has to be some kind of framework built by the manager. Structure also links all of the tasks together instead of everything being done on individual basis. This creates a sense of unity among your project team. To move forward with the planning process, you need to transform the specifications into a complete set of tasks that are linked together. If the planning of a project becomes too complicated then that means that the tasks need to be broken down into even smaller ones. This is also a great way to learn each and every detail of the project. Planning too much detail could be a fault by the project manager as well. Introduction Every American seems to have their own belief and idea of how to help our country continue to grow and be successful. Whether or not each individual idea is helpful or beneficial to the country is another story but, policy is the way for our country to continue to develop. Throughout American history politicians have used their ideas for new policies to help their campaign and in turn elect them into office. They can not always deliver their promises for change in part due to the separation of powers in the United States which creates multiple veto points for policy. As a country we do not remember policies that have little buzz or attention but rather the ones that were passed after a buildup of continued conversation or debate. These conversations can be sparked by a particular event or problem. As Marc Landry said Greatness is rare and hostage to fortune. Crisis creates its opportunity. Policies can be implemented to help solve these problems. As a society we would not complain about a problem that we did not care about and to take the next step we would not display effort for change unless we truly believed it would help. Successful policies teach us what those in power honestly care about and what we truly care about. Why Policy? For a policy to be on the agenda usually one or more of four particular items need to be in play. Crisis, interests group, realigning elections and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Grendel s Presentation Of The Monster In Beowulf Beowulf is described as the most heroic man of the Anglo Saxons, he was important and needed by his people, known as courageous and strong. He was their hero, but the movie shows a different side. Both the story and the poem tell the story of Beowulf sailing all the way from Sweden and is known as the hero to all Danes when he kills a terrorizing monster named Grendel. Both Genres are based in Denmark home to Danes. The biggest differences between the movie and the poem are how the monsters are portrayed and how Hrothgar is characterized, and also the role of women. Unlike the novel, the monsters are portrayed differently in the movie. However, in the novel, grendel represent something more. He was pure evil showing no remorse, angry toward mankind and in the movie he s more sympathetic, baby like. Grendel s father was Hrothgar in the movie, unlike the story he was the son of Cain. Secondly, the dragon in the movie is the son of Beowulf which he goes after and his kingdom as well to kill and destroy everything he desires. The way the monsters are portrayed seem like it tries to switch up the way we expect to see the movie, surprising us with the way the monsters act in the movie being described ... • 55. Different Types Of Economics Within The Game Show Industry The business that I have chosen for this project is TV Game Shows. Over the next few pages, I will show different types of economics within the game show industry. Cash prizes are paid by the show, and the money comes from the producers, who are paid by the advertisers/network. There can be a couple of safeguards that make this a little easier for the shows: They can have an insurance policy to protect them from huge losses. For example, the insurance company says, we ve studied the odds of your game, and we ll sell you a policy for $200,000 up front, that pays out full prize money any time someone wins $100,000 or more during this season of the show. Obviously this is all about a smart insurance company who has studied the gameplay and sorted out the odds of how many players will win big, but the point is that the show doesn t have to worry about it. They can let the insurance company work it out, and the show then has a nice fixed cost expense they can reliably drop into their production budget and not think about it. For really big prizes ($1,000,000), shows may pay similar to a lottery, where the money is in a fund that pays over x amount of years, or the winner can take a reduced lump sum immediately. For example, if you were to win $1 million on a show, they might tell you (after the show is done taping) okay! We can give you $50,000 a year for the next 20 years, or we can pay you $450,000 lump sum right now and that s all you get. And of course, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
