Nursing Quality Indicators
Abstract The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators were published in an effort to build
on previously collected quality data and further develop nursing knowledge to provide best practice
nursing care. This paper explores eight scholarly articles that report on the relationship between
hand hygiene compliance and the nursing sensitive indicator of nosocomial infections. These items
will be reviewed; a needs assessment, high reliability standards, just culture principals, quality
improvement implications, a plan for future action using the Plan Do Study Act model, and
summarization of ethical implications. Health care organizations must engage in robust process
improvement for hand hygiene (HH) compliance for the resultant reduction... Show more content on

This aligns with the model of Plan Do Study Act. It is crucial to understand what we are trying to
accomplish, how we will know that a change is an improvement, and what changes can be made
that will actually result in improvement. Prevention strategies of nosocomial infections related to
poor hand hygiene include revision of: orientation, training processes, competency assessments,
equipment cleaning, handwashing procedures, switching to the use of single use IV flush vials,
adding strategically located waterless hand rubs, defining supervisory expectations, conducting in
services, team trainings, and tracking systems (Infection control related sentinel events, 2003).
Potential solutions to noncompliance include: consistent skin protectant application, reduced time
required for handwashing, and antiseptic stations at the bedside and room entry points (Boyce,
1999). Hospital administrators must create an organizational atmosphere in which adherence to
recommended HH practices are considered an integral part of providing high quality care (Boyce,
1999). Improvement in infection control

Theme Of Corruption In Huck Finn
There is a quote, at the base of the Statue of Liberty that reads; Give me your tired, your poor. Your
huddled masses yearning to breathe free... This quote reflects the feeling of great opportunity many
immigrants felt they would receive upon coming to America. This was also the mentality many
American believed all received through our constitution s promise of; life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. In Mark Twains novel, Huckleberry Finn, the structure of the main character s
relationship with society is made to show the reader the toxicity of the Reconstruction Era
showing that despite what people believed about the time period after the civil war was a lot like
the period before. Par consequence of Huck Finn s structure, the era twenty five years later
known as the Progressive Era could also be used as a location for a similar novel. The important
aspects of Huck Finn that would go towards any paralleling novel, would be, the elements of a
young child torn between their society and themselves, the themes of racial intolerance, and the
themes of societal corruption. Like Huck Finn, this novel would be read differently by different
people of different descents of the year 1900, and the people of today.
After stating the above, it is important for a discourse on the structure of Huck Finn s character to
take place. Huck Finn is a young boy of about twelve or fourteen, who in addition to feeling a great
sense of isolation, which is because he is caught between the

Cultural Differences Between Ross, Monica And Chandle Friends
What does true friendship look like? A show of quick wit and humor, Friends has been the show
that has influenced people from all about the globe, that is to say if those influences are
exceptional or inadequate. For ten years viewers have seen the development, maturity, and loyalty
of friendship; this gang of six introduces the culture of the mid 1990s to the early 2000s and
audiences are shown evidence of change in modern society. In this longer episode of Friends, The
Last One: Part 1 Part 2, viewers see the development of growth among the six companions. The
development of friendship among Ross, Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe takes some
time. Not only does the group s relationship grow emotionally but also physically; with new

Many may disagree on surrogate mothers because the paternal mother does not have the same
connection as a mother whose baby is growing and developing inside her. Some may argue that
Monica could not have kids, but that point can be fought with the choice of adoption. Surrogacy
was supported by a few states and traditional surrogacy in the 1990s was not commonly nor
legally supported. One case in 1990 explains how a surrogate mother wanted to have custody of the
child after admitting she had developed an emotional bondage with the baby. The judge denied her
custody and decided to have the child raised by his genetic parents. The judge thought about the
child s sake; he did not want the boy to grow up with the confusion of having relationships with two
mothers and a father. Judge Parslow stated to the California Legislature that if any surrogate
agreements withstand, the surrogate must understand the psychological evaluation she will
undergo. The Friends series supported surrogacy and made it seem to society that it was

Slavery In The 1800s

Slavery Essay
In the 1700 s and 1800 s, the planter elite class of the American South conspired with both federal
and state governments and other whites to institutionalize slavery in order to protect their
economic and social power and way of life. Their efforts were generally wide spread, simple,
blatant and generally very effective. At the federal level, southerners in the House of
Representatives, who were often controlled and funded by the planter elites, won approval of James
Madison s resolution which declared that Congress ha[s] no authority to interfere in the
emancipation of slaves, or in the treatment of them within any of the States. (Edwards, Henretta,
Hinderaker, Self). This resolution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is something they were also very effective at doing. Laws like the Alabama Slave Code of
1852 not only required all whites to patrol plantations so slaves did not escape, they also
prohibited slaves from travelling without their masters, from carrying any kind of weapon, from
owning property and from gathering in groups larger than five (Primary Source Packet). Most any
violation of the Code resulted in branding, whipping or death. These regulations prevented slaves
from ever gaining power, defending themselves or trying to organize or rebel against slavery. They
also helped the elites control poor yeomen whites by giving them jobs, minor government
positions and rewards for patrolling and capturing escaped slaves. The Plantation Slave Roles
also incentivized slaves to follow authority even if it meant hiding their beliefs and emotions or
even beating or whipping other slaves (Primary Source Packet). The Roles effectively helped the
planter elites institutionalize slavery with the help of slaves. The planter elite class relied on
slavery in order to protect their economic way of life. They used their wealth and power to ensure
that the northern states and federal government did not interfere with slavery in the south. The
elites similarly used their wealth and power to establish local and state laws to prevent slaves from
gaining power or rebelling, and they also incentivized poor whites to support slavery by rewarding
with money, jobs and minor government positions. All of these actions effectively institutionalized
slavery and preserved the wealth and power of the planter

The American Bullfrog is native to lands east of the Rockies. The Bullfrog was brought over

A Study On The Mammalian Diving Reflex
Introduction: The mammalian diving reflex represents a primary physiological mechanism to
maximize underwater excursions in air breathing animals. Traditionally, the oxygen conserving
reflex consists of three metabolic and cardiovascular adjustments: (1) notable bradycardia; (2)
selective peripheral vasoconstriction; and (3) increased blood flow to the viscera (Kawakami et
al., 1967). Previous studies have observed such a response in birds and mammals, generalizing the
considerable reduction of heart rate, or diving bradycardia, as indicative of the response (Butler,
1982). The evolutionary success of these diving animals relies partly on the functional significance
of reducing metabolic demands to prologue underwater survival. Although... Show more content on

Moreover, Gooden (1994) describes apnea as an essential element to the diving reflex; it ensures not
only the prevention of water inhalation, but also acts as an energy saving device through
decreasing nerve stimulation to the diaphragm and intercostals. Therefore, heart rate will be
monitored under both experimental conditions and compared to the resting rate and apneic resting
rate. As a profound autonomic phenomenon, further establishment of the diving reflex in humans
will shed light on the preservation of the reflex and its role in the survival during near drowning
experiences. Only by examining the physiological response in humans can we appreciate the
evolutionary significance of this innate neural circuitry.
Methods:
An untrained 22 year old male human subject was chosen. A PT 104 pulse plethysmograph was
wrapped around his dominant (right) index finger. Connected through a IXTA data acquisition unit,
heart rate was monitored on LabScribe. The recordings were measured with ten seconds of leeway
at the beginning and end to allow baseline pulse recovery. Digital marks labeled the time interval of
the described action. First the subject s heart rate was measured during a resting phase for twenty
seconds. He was encouraged to relax and remain inactive in order to confirm an accurate baseline
reading. For the apneic condition, the subject repeated this

World Trade Organization ( Wto )
World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international institution that supervises and ensures the
executions of trade agreements and treaties among economic entities. Its headquarter is located in
Geneva (Switzerland). It was called Economic UN for its status of international trade. The volumes
of trade of the members have become the majority international trade. It is the maker, supervisor and
executor of multilateral trade treaties and agreements. It is an important place to settle trade
disputes. It is an influential participant in the international economic cooperation with other global
institutions and one of the most important international organizations.
WTO was born out of the negotiations called the Uruguay Round and earlier negotiations under the
General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade(GATT) on 15th April 1994, aiming at cover the shortages
of GATT. GATT, the product of international free trade, is the predecessor of WTO, which was an
intergovernmental agreement about the rules of tariffs and trade signed on 30th October 1947.
However, it had been an interim agreement but not a formal international institution since it came
into force, which had hugely limited its processes of executions. Firstly, it lacked of legal binding
and powerful measures. Secondly, the interim agreement had some grey area, which cause the
agreement could not be implemented accurately. Finally, GATT discriminated different social
systems. With eight multilateral tariff and trade negotiations

Examples Of Diasporic Culture In Home To Harlem
2. A ship is a significant term regarding the context of diasporic culture because it is a vehicle
which can move between various places. Ideally, it could be used as a tool to explore one s
identity. The image of the ship is utilized in almost all the texts which we have read thus far this
semester, from texts such as Claude McKay s Home to Harlem to the opening scenes of Zora
Neale Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God to Marcus Garvey
s essays and speeches in
Philosophy and Opinion. Where ships remain a metaphorical component of the two fictional
texts mentioned, it represents a vehicle which would further a Pan African agenda in the
second. In Home to Harlem, McKay s protagonist, Jake, spends his time on various forms of
transportation, such as trains. However, he begins his tale on a freighter on his way back to
Harlem. The first image we see of him is one on a ship, making a choice to come back to the
United States. As an American protagonist, Jake s diasporic identity has been created by ships
through the slave trade while simultaneously being steered by ships through his own autonomy
regarding decisions on where to live at any moment. As mentioned before, Marcus Garvey s essays
and speeches hinge on the return to Africa. This return would be accomplished through the Black
Star, which never began its journey in relocating black individuals to Africa. Overall, both texts
represent ships as a vehicle which can give individuals with diasporic backgrounds some form of

Comparing Iliad And Chapter Thirteen In Homer s Metamorphosis
Throughout many myths, scarifies and prayers are common. Most scarifies and prayers are towards
gods to get their help or something from them. In both Homer s Iliad and chapter thirteen in the
Metamorphosis, this theme is seen. In the Iliad, sacrifices are done by Chrysies and by
Agamemnon, one wanted his daughter back the other wanted to win a war. In the chapter thirteen
of The Metamorphosis, Achillesforces the Greeks to scarified someone for him as an act of
forgiveness and regret. Also, a man call Aeneas, did a sacrificed to the gods to help him through
his journey to a new hometown. Therefore, through this examples we can see how scarifies and
prayers play a huge role in many myths, which are to worshipgods and ask them for aid.

1, Lines 46 50.) Chrysies suffer for many days for his daughter, he pleaded, begged, and even

back. Apollo listens to his priest and sent a plague to Agamemnon killing most of his army, so he
was force to return Astynome. Also, Agamemnon sacrifices an ox, when his soldiers are eating
breakfast. He sacrifices the animal to Zeus to help him defeat the Trojans and be successful in war,
which they ended up winning. In chapter thirteen of the metamorphosis Achilles was forcing the
Greeks to make a sacrificed for him because they are so unappreciative of him, and he wanted
them to scarify Priam and Hecuba daughter Polyxena, Yet stay, ungrateful Greeks; nor let me sue in

The Trans-Saharan Trade
The Trans Saharan trade remained a constant source of wealth and ultimately enabled the spread of
ideas, thus strengthening the West African kingdoms. The constant source of wealth in the empire
was due to many factors such as the trade concessions on the Atlantic coast and the need for salt
and gold that strengthened the economy. The trade concessions on the Atlantic coast was a form of
taxing system in order to trade with the West African empire (WHFUA Mali Songhai, 1). Due to
the fact that the Mali empire had a variety of resources that other empires required such as salt and
gold the empire took advantage of that and therefore taxed foreign ships that landed in West African
territory gaining income to benefit the economy and thus strengthening

The Process Of Matching Hospitals And Residents
Problem
Initial Solution
The process of matching hospitals and residents was chaotic and confusing before the NRMP
began to be used in 1952. The main way hospitals chose medical students was to extend an offer to
the student as early as they could. The demand of the hospitals was greater than the number of
students looking for residencies, prompting considerable competition among hospitals for interns. 1
This competition lead to hospitals presenting students offers earlier than others could. With offers
so early, hospitals could not know the final class standings or grades of the students by the time
they finished school.1 In the most extreme cases, hospitals would send offers to students two years
preceding the internship.1 In 1926, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The small adjustments began in 1945; the first of which would help students by resolving that
hospitals should allow students 10 days after an offer had been made to consider whether to
accept or reject it. 1 In the year 1946, another change was made and students were given up to
eight days to respond.1 In 1949, the AAMC proposed that appointments should be made by
telegram at 12:01 A.M., November 15, with applicants not required to accept or reject them until
12:00 noon the same day. Even this 12 hour waiting period was rejected by the American Hospital
Association (AHA) as too long 1. They agreed on the Appointment of Interns which contained that
no specified waiting period after 12:01 A.M. is obligatory 3. Even after these changes were made,
it was clear that there were still problems in the matching process. In order to avoid these problems
and the costs they imposed, it was proposed, and ultimately agreed, that a more centralized
matching procedure should be tried 1.
Second Iteration of the Solution
Ultimately, the students were unhappy with modified original system. Their decisions had to be
made quickly and without the ability to consider other offers. The hospitals had to select students
before the students had developed any notable skills or even knew their specialty. Named as a
form of congestion and market failure by Roth in 2008, it was evident that changes in the residency
matching program needed to be made. Thus,

Symbolism In The Exorcist
In this essay I will be talking about symbols and what they mean, some dichotomies, horror
themes, my thoughts on the topic and relating it to other films or books of the horror genre I find
in The exorcist. I will also be giving an overview of the film
The film was directed by William Friedkin and it is based on the novel The Exorcist from 1971.
This film The Exorcist is about a mother who is an actor and her daughter who unfortunately has
been possessed by the devil himself. It follows them and how the mother is trying to help her and
that after trying everything she gets to priests to do an exorcism on her and she is then rid of the
monster.
Dichotomy is when a seemingly harmless thing is portrayed as the opposite. One dichotomy in the
film is Regan. Regan is a dichotomy because she is at first seemingly safe ... Show more content on

This is a symbol of purification of water to protect the good from the devil and his minions. We
can prove this because at times in the film the priests throw holy water on Regan to try to
weaken the devil and cause it harms. Then there is the medallion of the Saint Joseph he was
known as two different saints for one he was known as the patron saint of the workers and then
later on he was declared by pope Pius IX as the patron saint and protector of the holy church. I
feel that being the patron saint and protector of the holy church makes more sense, seeing as it is
obtained by Father Merrin. This could possibly mean that Then there is the holy cross. This is
used in the scene where we can see a possessed Regan pleasuring herself with a crucifix while
uttering the words fuck Jesus, fuck you over and over again. This can be a symbol of how much
the devil despises god and all things holy by using a holy object to commit and unholy sin while
uttering fowl unholy words. He then furthers this when pushing Chris s head down under her dress
and saying lick me . This is probably to show how the devil wants to

Proper Nutrition In Canada
Everything we do on a daily basis, including studying and working, are all done for one goal at
the end of the day; survival. For surviving we need air, water and food, luckily air has not been
commodified yet, so the two most basic human rights than reveal themselves to be the right to clean
drinking water and proper nutrition. However, even in a developed country like Canada, the right to
foodis not always guaranteed, many people go to sleep with proper nutrition every day. I believe
that this type of carelessness for any person, and especially in a developed country is
unacceptable. This is the reason I chose to work with the North York Harvest Food Bank, so more
people could be guaranteed the right to food.

The Military Decision Making Process
The Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) is a repeating plan of procedures used to
understand the situation and mission, develop a course of action, and produce an operation plan or
order. The MDMP integrates the intangible and comprehensive aspects of planning and integrates
the activities of the commander, staff, subordinate headquarters, and other partner involved in the
planningprocess. We need the MDMP because it allows the leader to apply thoroughness, clarity,
sound judgment, logic, and professional knowledge to understand conditions, develop choices to
solve problems, and obtain results. The MDMP aids in the collaboration and planning with the
higher headquarters. The higher headquarters gather and shares information concerning future
operations with subordinate and neighboring units, supporting units, and unified action partners.
They plan meetings, issues warning orders or use other means. The MDMP consists of 7 steps that
have numerous inputs and outputs. The outputs can lead to an increasing understanding of the
situation. The commanders and the staffs perform these steps consecutively. They may revisit
several steps as they learn more about the situation before constructing a plan or order. The 7 steps
of the MDMP are receipt of mission, mission analysis, course of action development, course of
action analysis, course of action comparison, course of action approval, and orders production.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
Introduction
When South Africa won the lobby for hosting the 2010 FIFA world cup, news went viral about it
and almost reached everyone in the world. It was a great moment of joy and celebrations
especially in the African countries. This jubilant joy and pomp celebrations might have been
because of the continent s attempts in bidding to host this mega sport event without success. Many
people around the world had their eyes fixed on South Africa, some questioning the ability of the
country to host such a famous activity in the world s calendar. Some people saw fun; others saw

Integrity and competition are key aspects in the business field; they measure the level of ethics and

* Economic development
Despite being the gateway to Africa, South Africa still has some economic challenges. Poor
infrastructure, low tourist attraction, and inadequate capital investment among others, are still big
headache for this country (Grundling and Steynberge 2010). By FIFA accepting to take this major
football event there, FIFA and the South African government were targeting to help spur economic
development in that part of the world.
Challenges
Like any other project, the 2010 FIFA world cupin South Africa faced many challenges. These
challenges, ranging from political to social, interfered with the planning of the event in one way or
another. Racial segregation, poor transport network, security threats and developing economy
challenged the project timeline in varied ways. To understand fully the implication of these
challenges, the report segments them as:
* Insecurity
Security is of prime concern and takes first priority whenever an event is planned and executed.
With the proliferations of the terror advancement throughout the world, the organizers of the 2010
FIFA world cupwere more concerned with security than any other thing. The porosity in the South
African security system posed a great challenge. With the high number of people expected to attend

Subsequently Ms. Mapp was handcuffed for being, according to the officers belligerent .

Decision Making Within The Organization
First and foremost, stakeholders are individuals that have an interest or even influence of decision
making within the organization. Stakeholders along with elected officials, organizations, and
special interest groups are valued based on their contributions and connections. In comparison
amongst all organizations, healthcare stakeholders play a key integral part because of
regulations. Health care is highly regulated and policy driven and the right personnel in your
corner can go a long way. Many healthcare stakeholders are involved in the development of policy
and have key capital connections to promote and deny potential health care business altering
regulations. They provide the funds which give organizations power to promote and push their
policies through legislatures. The funds that they provide can also be utilized to defund conflicting
policies. The main goal for stakeholders is profitability, more profit is equivalent to more power.
Aligned with profitability stakeholders invest in productivity that yields the most profitability.
Unfortunately, the influence that stakeholders have on policy making can be directly related to
money, they continue to hold great power in the process because all promoted policies need a
beneficiary. Financial Standing The last 5 years Kindred has been blasted with many highs and

Taking a Look at Migraines
Migraines
Migraines, the head pounding agony that is experienced by millions worldwide. They are severe,
reoccurring headaches which can last as long as 72 hours. Many who suffer from migraines also
experience nausea and sensitivity to noise, light and smell.
THE HISTORY
Migraines aren t recent, in fact that have been around since as early as 7,000 BC, but
unfortunately valid treatment was not around back then. Trepenation is the earliest form of
treatment available for migraines, in which one purposefully drilled multiple holes into the head
of the sufferer in order to remove the evil spirits from one s head and was believed to be effective
whether that point of view was developed from being consistently closed minded or the surviving
patients had experienced the absolute pinnacle of the Placebo effect . The first effective form of
treatment for migraines was only developed multiple thousand years later in 1868, in which a
substance created from a fungus known as ergot was used. It continued to be used and developed
until eventually during the late 20th century when more effective methods were created and
confirmed.
SYMPTOMS
Unfortunately migraines are not as simple as the occasional headache, but generally occur in phases
which are as follows.
The Prodrome phase: The phase that generally occurs first, it is majority mood related but includes
a few physical characteristics. In this phase, one finds themselves in a state of depression, often
fatigued as well, as this

Mate Analysis Essay
Strategic male mate choice minimizes ejaculate consumption (in bottle tail squid)
Sexual reproduction is costly. As a result, both sexes often use a variety of mating tactics to reduce
their reproductive costs (Arnqvist and Rowe 2005). Research, to date, has traditionally centered on
how females attempt to mitigate the cost of mating, due to their often comparatively higher gametic
and parental investments (e.g., McNamara et al. 2008; Nilsen et al. 2010). However, male strategies
that reduce mating costs have received far less attention. To minimize such costs, male reproductive
effort should be directed toward females that will provide the greatest fitness payoffs (Wedell et al.
2002). However, accurate mate evaluation is often difficult ... Show more content on

Researchers also recorded the number of spermatophores eaten, proportion eaten, and number stored
in the female buccal cavity.
To test whether males differed in reproductive investment toward gravid (carrying eggs or young;
pregnant) and nongravid females, Researchers used a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM)
with stepwise selection and, depending on the variable, either a binomial or Poisson error
distribution (PROC GLIMMIX, SAS v9.2).
RESULTS
Effects of size and female reproductive condition on male investment
The only factor determining male mating attempts was size ratio (F1,40 = 9.42, P = 0.004, n = 42,
Figure 1a) with males more likely to attempt mating with females that were proportionally larger.
Female spermatophore consumption.
Females did not appear to conserve a minimum number of spermatophores for future fertilizations
when eating spermatophores (number of spermatophores after consumption: minimum = 8,
maximum = 35, range = 27), with no increase in consumption when males invested heavily
(controlled for female size: F1,15 = 3.53, P = 0.079). Male size had no effect on female
spermatophore consumption (linear regression: R2 = 0.023, P =

Zimbardo s Experiment, Studying The Way Prisoners And...
Likewise Zimbardo s (1971) experiment, studying the way prisoners and guards interacted,
demonstrated similar ethical failings, such as consent gained without individuals being made
fully aware of the involvements; physical, emotional and psychological harm subjected; violation
of rights, including privacy, respect, confidentiality and the ability to withdraw (). Fascinated by
the volume of ordinary individuals who executed terrible things to others during WWII,
Zimbardo predicted that all people, even the good, had the potential to conduct malevolence
when sited in the correct environment (Haney et al, 1973). In a mock prison participants were
recruited to play a role, half as prisoners and the rest as guards. Both were dressed accordingly,
with the guards wearing a uniform with mirrored sunglasses which promotes anonymity as their
emotions are obscured, but yet denotes their position of power and authority. According to
Zimbardo (2000) these conditions of deindividuation allow for the facilitation of evil.
Subsequently it becomes acceptable to enforce measures which degrade prisoners of their self
respect, including being stripped, deloused and ordered to carry a chain around their ankle, whilst
the mandatory wearing of a smock and a cap made from a stocking demoralized them as it
impacted upon their masculinity. Additionally, not only were prisoners assigned a number by
which they were referred to, denying them of their identity, but each area of their daily

Analysis Of IRL Fetish By Nathan Jurgenson
The rapid expansion of technological advancement is engulfing our culture. The author of IRL
Fetish, Nathan Jurgenson argues that people have a weird interest in the world of offline.
Technological advances are leading people into the realm of online, but Jurgenson also realizes
the glorification of movement to offline. People who believe online world is destroying the real
life connection and many writers lament, Writer after writer laments the loss of a sense of
disconnection, of boredom (now redeemed as a respite from anxious info cravings) ...

educating the world that phone must be put away and boast about being offline. In IRL Fetish by
Nathan Jurgenson, the author illustrates the practice of fetishizing of the offline world creates a
misrepresentation of online and the offline world. In the article, Jurgenson highlights many details
how people are boasting about their self control to stay offline. One example is when the author
mentions about Turkle s experience at Cape Cod. Turkle leads the chorus that insists that taking
time out is becoming dangerously difficult and that we need to follow their lead and log off
(127). Jurgenson criticizes her and people who are like her because these people are focusing too
much on the idea of offline, and they naГЇvely think they can escape the

3d Printing And Its Effects On The World Of Tissue...
3D Printing On the forefront of tissue scaffold fabrication is 3D printing. 3D printers have a
multitude of advantages over traditional scaffold fabrication methods. High print precision
allows fibers to be deposited into 3D structures with finely tunable dimensions, 3D printers also
have the ability to incorporate multiple materials into the same structure through multiple
extrusion heads. Jakus et al. used a 3D extrusion based printer to create a graphene and
polylactide co glycolide scaffold and showed it could create a 3D graphene structure (3DG) with
features as small as 100 um and as large as 10cm offering a large range of applications. They also
showed that 3DG supports human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) adhesion, viability, proliferation,
and neurogenic differentiation with significant upregulation of glial and neuronal genes [9]. The
ease in fabrication and the ability to precisely modify structure with 3D printers allows for
opportunities in a wide range of tissue engineering applications. Incorporating growth factors and
other bioactive molecules into a CP It is often desirable to modify the material properties of a
polymer to better optimize it for different applications. Critical properties that affect the possible
applications of the polymer include conductivity, porosity, hydrophobicity, degradability. There are
four main processes to incorporate chemical and biological molecules into a polymer. The simplest
method is adsorption, following the

Implicit Bias Analysis
Implicit Biases in Reader Response
Reading Jane Austen has never appealed to me. The combination of dated prose, a general
aversion to plots I deemed to be too romantic , and my viewing of the film adaptations were
enough to keep me away from her novels. When I was asked to read Persuasion for a class, I was
hesitant and unwilling to fully engage with the material. This prevented me from enjoying the
book fully. I didn t quite know what was holding me back from enjoying the book, but I knew that
it was something more than my explicit biases against Austen. After a little reflection, I realized
that my implicit biases were shaping my reading of Austen. My implicit bias against a novel and
author that I perceived as overly feminine was coloring how I was interacting with and what
messages I was taking from Persuasion (Austen).
Implicit biases are the unconscious attitudes that shape our thoughts, actions, and beliefs (Banaji
and Greenwald 46; Staats et al. 10; Schneider 169).Their impact is important to study because
implicit biases shape our responses to situations. Reader response theory examines how a reader
responds to a given text. Theorists such as Jauss and Eco include concepts that implicit bias can and
should be built into. Jauss horizons examine how our experiences, expectations, culture, and place
in time shape how we react and create meaning. Though implicit bias is not noted in Jauss
formulation of the horizon, it should be considered as it shapes our

German Art Observation Paper
I visited Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the exhibition named Form in Fragments:
Abstraction in German Art, 1906 1925 which highlighted in abstraction in German Expressionism.
The exhibition was composed of over 60 works including works by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz
Marc, Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Erich Heckel, Otto Dix, and an abstract
film by Hans Richter. Among the many works on view, one of the Paul Klee s prints titled
Hoffmannesque Scene caught my eye.
Hoffmannesque Scene is a lithograph printed in black and colored inks on a wove paper that was
created in 1921 in Germany. The title of the print tells you that it recounts a particular scene that
was inspired by something. This abstract print depicts the freeform shapes of objects including
human and animal with shaded blocks. The depiction of the scene resembles cave and ... Show more

The print is presented with antique brass, pastel brown, pale gold, wheat, and pale chestnut. These
undertones of colors that are softened or moderated create a feeling of gloom and calm at the same
time. In addition, Klee used the technique of color blocking by overlapping squares. There is no
particular color that dominates the entire image or completely catches a viewer s attention.
However, Klee emphasized on harmonization of colors by considering not only the combination
of the colors but also the composition and the scale of the blocks. Each block blends
harmoniously into one another so that it creates a sense of rhythmical or rhythmic changes, even
though those colors used are analogous. Therefore, the print reminds me of lyrical melody,
especially moody and gentle jazz music. While the background of the print presents a sense of
color, the artist detached color from physical description and the objects are drawn childlike.
Thus, the print looks like an illustrated page of a child s diary that depicts an image of his or her

The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster And Its Effects On The World
On April 26th, 1986, at 1:23 A.M., the world s worst nuclear disaster to date occurred. It has
affected millions of people in Eastern Europe, and it has caused more than 360,000 people to
evacuate their homes and leave their belongings behind. It has also set a dangerous precedent to
the safety and operating procedures of other nuclear power plants around the world. Thirty years
later, people in Eastern Europe are still feeling the effects of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The causes, the effects on animals and the environment, and the effects on humans of the
Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster are still being debated by scientists today. The causes of the
Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster involve the analysis of views, design deficiencies, operator errors,
and the cleanup of the disaster. When the accident happened, there were many different views
and ideas of what happened. One idea was that there was damage to the cooling system, and too
much pressure built up in the shell of the reactor, causing the hydrogen that was leaving and the
air that coming in to mix and cause the explosion ( Causes and Impact 18). The other view on the
accident, was human error due to tests and experiments ( Causes and Impact 18). It was
determined that it was the operator s errors and the design of the reactor, which had a safety
features, which caused the disaster ( Causes and Impact 17). The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
used a different design compared to other nuclear plants around the world.

The largest earthquake that has been recorded was a 9.6. It occurred May 22, 1960 in southern
Chile. It lasted for approximately ten minutes. There was a resulting tsunami that hit Hawaii, Japan,
and part of New Zealand. While the exact number of casualties is unknown the number is estimated
to be between one thousand to six thousand souls.
Tsunami is a Japanese term meaning harbour wave. They are also known as tidal waves or
seismic sea waves. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are these most prevalent triggers of
tsunami occurrences. What makes tsunamis not the same as normal waves is that customary
whitecaps are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon or sun, or they are formed due to wind
patterns. However, tsunamis are caused by a severe water displacement. While tsunamis do
transpire around the world, Japan is the foremost victim of this natural disaster. Tsunamis can be
over one hundred feet tall and move forward at speeds of five hundred miles per hour. An
average of 7,916 people perishes each year correlated to tsunami incidents. Another 85,582 are
affected. Eighty percent of tidal waves transpire in the Pacific Ocean s ring of fire.
The largest recorded tsunami occurred on July 9, 1958. It happened in the evening after an
earthquake happened on the Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle. It had a record height of
1,720 feet and hit the shores of Lituya Bay, Alaska. The impact of the tsunami resulted in the

Solar Energy Pros And Cons
This research will discuss solar energy in three points which are what solar energy is, solar
power systems for houses and how the humans benefited from it. Solar energy is the light and
heat which are coming from the sun, and a human create them for his benefits since ancient time
ago. Also, solar energy is the important kind of green energy. Moreover, humans have used them
by using a range of modern technology that is constantly evolving. It includes harnessing solar
energy technologies using thermal energy of the sun either directly heated or within converting
mechanical movement or electric power, or to generate electricity through phenomena
Photovoltaic (PV) using the panels of photovoltaic cells effort. In addition, a human has used
solar energy architectural designs that rely on the exploitation of solar energy process, solar
energy is a sustainable energy and is not implemented also it is a natural source of energy, and
can be used to generate other forms of energy. As well, the great contribution is that solar energy
will assure the other energy unsustainable sources such as oil and natural gas. According to
Dickon and Matt Coal, natural gas, and nuclear power, which today supply two thirds or more of
global power, are not about to disappear. But even at its currently low rates of market penetration,

The promise of a decade of development of high technology air power was expected by some to
show a new way of fighting wars. The evidence from the campaign appears to give a more mixed
message. Certainly, a higher percentage of air weapons was guided in this conflict than in any
previous war. Strategic intelligence appears to have been less accurate than had been expected.
The unexpected initial resistance by Iraqi forces, followed by later surrender, required flexible
coalition operations. The vision of the use of chemical and biological weapons proved
groundless. The efficiency of special operations will be one area for deeper revision. The media
policy will need reviewing for future operations. At this stage, the article does no more than record
the sequence of events, make broad judgements about the strategic and tactical approaches of both
the Coalition and Iraqi forces, and highlights areas where further investigation may be useful to

Comparing Philosophy And Cosmological Approach To The...
Natural Theology is when both philosophy and theology work together as one to provide more
logical proof and understanding through nature that God actually does exist, as opposed to leaning
on an individual faith, revelation, experience or religion. Natural theology is the reasonable idea so
to speak that Godexists and has always existed. This is examined through our natural understanding
and observation of nature, how things happen in the world and even through our own existence as
human beings. The main differences within Philosophyand Theology is that Philosophy for
example is the study and the knowledge of how the world works and of whom we, as humans are
through reality and the world we live in meanwhile, Theology is the study of God and religion
which happens to be completely different with how philosophy views God and religion. Although

The Ontological approach was developed by Saint Anselm, according to the lecture, This proof

perfection. If we can simply exist then, there must be a divine, perfect being that has always and
also exists as well however, afterwards, philosopher Immanuel Kant argued that simply because
there is the thought that existence is perfect, does not give us proof or enough information to say

How To Increase Crime In America
There are many time periods that I am fond of but I think my favorite time period is the 1950s. I
think I would be happy during that time period because everything was simpler and more safe.
Children could play outside without their parent worrying because most people just left them
alone and kidnapping was unheard of. Most people also lived in the suburbs and I think I would be
able to fit into that life nicely. I already live next to my grandparents and one of my brothers so
living next to more nice people would not have been a problem for me. Elvis was also live alive
and rock and roll was too. The music was more pure and pleasant back then, not like the music we

The baby boom occurred at this time because many Americans believed that since the war was
over all the bad times were also over. There was an increase in the national gross product mostly
from the construction of roads and other national improvements. Wages were high and most
people had jobs so there was more money that people had access to. People were able to spend
more money for things they like and there were many advancements that gave them things to
want. There was also a civil rights movement that was becoming popular and was flourishing.
Separate but equal facilities were ruled against the law so the integration of African Americans
into white facilities began. Nonviolent resistance was common unlike today when protests are
more frequent than peaceful protests. There was not as much anger between the races as there is
now but instead there was a sense of dissatisfaction. Nonviolent protests were still the most
popular form of expression even with the level of satisfaction that was present. The violent
protests that occur now are probably due to the higher crime rate. Protests now also involve theft
as well as the violence toward cops and even regular citizens. While the protest is going on the

Types of ADRs/GDRs
ADRs can be classified into two broad categories: 1. Unsponsored ADRs/GDRs: In such DRs, the
company (RIL in our case) has got no agreement with the custodian or depository bank for the
issuance of DRs. These are traded on the over the counter (OTC) market and are issued according
to the market demand forces.
Unsponsored DRs can be issued by a no. of depository banks. Each depository services only the
DRs issued by it.
2. Sponsored DRs: These are the DRs which are sponsored by the company itself. In this case, the
foreign company itself wants to issue DRs and it does so by designating a depository bank that
will issue DRs in the foreign market on its behalf. It is of the following types:
a) Level 1 Sponsored DRs: These are the lowest level of sponsored DRs. These are traded only
on the OTC market. In case of ADRs, the company is supposed to adhere to minimal US Securities

The first day of science was highly enjoyable, I was so excited that we finally get to do some real
science projects. In elementary school, we had not worked on science very much. One of my
favorite projects that we have done so far was the cup activity where there was a rubber band
and eight strings were tied to the rubber band. We each took one piece of the string and we were
instructed to work together to try and transfer the rubber band onto the cups, to make a tower.
That activity was highly amusing because it taught us how to work together. When Mrs. Cotter
realized that we could not work together very well, she gave us another activity to do. She
assigned us partners and she gave each pair of partners one piece of string. The pairs of partners

My class and I continued to do more great activities. One of them was that we were given the
privilege to measure each other and record the results down on a piece of paper. Later on, after
everyone was done measuring, we took out our chromebooks and started transferring the results
to the chromebook. At last, after everyone was done typing the results of the measuring project,
we started something new that we are currently working on. Our class is going on a space trip to
another planet, and our class has to come up with a list of survival items we need, to live in space
for two years. I enjoy doing this project very much, and I have always liked working together on a
project and making lists also based on everyone else s ideas. In general, all the activities we have
worked on in science class this year have been extremely fun. Science class has been by far one of
my favorite classes, I enjoy science and Mrs. Cotter s humor. I certainly hope that we will be able
to do more fun project and experiments in the school year with Mrs.

Speech On Diet And Nutrition
Anyone who is on a quest to live a long and healthy life should understands how important diet and
nutrition are to achieving the physically healthy body. Most of us delve deep into exercise and
healthy eating but we gloss over the topic of nutrition. There is a distinction that should be made
between diet and nutrition, these two concepts are mutually exclusive. Dieting involves making
sure we eat right, cut out the fats and the carbs, count daily calorie intake in our quest to either
lose weight or get back to a healthier size. Nutrition looks at the food we eat. It has to do with
what our body derives from what we feed it in terms of nutrients.
In order to understand the role of food in your life you need to be educated about the kinds of
food you should be eating and those that you need to steer clear of. The Cardinal Rule when it
comes to food and fitness is that you need food to function, food is the fuel that will get you
through your workout, help push you to do more and be more, however not all food is good for
you. Beyond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Descriptive Essay On A Masquerade Of Life
The Masquerade of Life It was late at night and the light were dim. It was darker under the table.
I always felt safe there when they went at it. The words going back and forth as I covered my
brother s ears. His tears were streaming down his face as we sat there trembling as the storm
raged on. Noises loud as lightning echoed through the house as things flew. Words hitting like
thunder on my ears. Tears were falling down my face like raindrops and we sat there huddled and
afraid without anyone to help us through this storm. I looked down at my brother and tried to
wear a fake mask of courage, despite the fact that I am a coward, I looked at him and told him I
wouldn t let anything hurt him, although at the first chance I got I planned on... Show more content

I knew what I should do, I knew that I needed to remove the toxic people from my life but it was
all I knew. It made me want to curl up into a ball, but I couldn t because I was strapped down. I
wasn t sure if I could stay anymore I was so saddened by my decisions in life and I just wanted to
leave, so I donned my mask of a jester, my mask of happiness. I could never let them, or anyone
see how I can be hurt, how someone could hurt me, how I can be vulnerable. Tears were reaching
my eyes. I wouldn t, no I couldn t let them fall sitting by her begging me to come back, and I just
couldn t. She tried kissing me but I just couldn t. I had tried so hard to wear the mask of a man,
to be the strong and gentle person she deserved but I couldn t go through this again, never again.
Her begging turned to yelling as she threw her sticks and stones at me, they say word can never
hurt me but I have never felt that bad. Her angry face and hurtful words shattered me into a
million shards. In the mid afternoon sun I put on my mask of a jester once more and I laughed.
I laughed and laughed through the pain as I sat upon my tailgate broken and alone, tears
streaming down my smiling face as I cackled till the moon was gently shining upon my face.
Wanting to die but too weak to do do anything I let my mask crack and slip as I stared as deep as I
could into myself, at

Impact Of Technology On The Music Industry
Over the years, music has become portable, starting with the transistor to a set of headphones.
Technology has allowed us to create a diverse musical culture. Music will always have an effect
on one s culture, and it has definitely mad a huge impact on the use of technology. Cultural
diversity is about bringing people closer together though the World Wide Web. Many music
publishers are the key to cultural diversity when it comes to publishing all genres. They will
increasingly continue to play a part in promoting diversity by bringing music of all kinds and
forms to the music market. The way we access and listen to music has changed a lot in the music
industry. For some, it may seem easier to download your favorite song from your favorite artist,
but there are rules to the file sharing and downloading of music. Before there was file sharing,
people would gather in concert halls for impressive music from some of the best known
composers of all time. Today, there has been an abundance of ways to access and listen to music,
in writing this paper, my goal is to discuss copyrightlaws, file sharing, and the progression of how
we access music.
Before we reached the electronic musical era, there was good old fashion concert halls. People
would gather together in the concert halls to see many different composers perform, all from
which were in different eras; the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic era. By the year 1877, Thomas
Edison had discovered how to record and reproduce sound

Evolution of Technology in the United States from 1860
A number of notable technological innovations have taken place between the years 1860 1870 in
the United States. In the sphere of communications, a major development was the completion of the
first transcontinental telegraph line across North America by Western Union in 1861 (Western
Union 2009). Moreover, in 1866, after several failed attempts, the Transatlantic Cable was laid that
connected Europe and North America. Before this landmark event, the fastest communication
between the two continents had taken at least a week; after the cable was laid, messages could be
transmitted instantaneously. The first message was, famously, that a treaty of peace has been
signed between Austria and Prussia (History Magazine n/d, Third Time Lucky ,... Show more

Response Essay Boston Teacher Residency
When we were younger we were often told that we can be whatever we want to be. As a little
girl around the age of three or four I use to always say that I want to be a lot of things. One day I
would want to be a doctor and within a couple of days I would say I wanted to be a princess. In
my mind everything was possible no matter what it was and my mom was always there to make
me believe that I could be anything I wanted to and that anything was possible. That lesson stuck
with me for a long time, even until this very day. In this article Boston Teacher Residency, it tells us
how one had begun to value their education. He admired his 8th grade Civics teacher, Mr. Fulton,
which was of color. He gave background of the teacher which informed us that he was a man...

He combines these appeals to write a great and interesting paper that motivates and entertains us

what. Everything he encountered he overcame and gained from it. This article taught me things
just by reading it. Never let anyone dictate what you are and what you are not capable of. You
should never give up on what your tasks is because you may never know how far you may get if
you give up because you never know how close you are to reaching your goal. Reading this
article made me think if the saying that my elementary teacher use to always say during the
morning announcements which was, Never settle for less than your best. Those words will
forever stick with me because she never failed to say it every day, by her constantly repeating it
made me get the full meaning to what she was trying to get us to understand. And because of that
he made an impact of my everyday life from elementary school all the way until

Lady Macbeth Play Analysis
In the play Macbeth , Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth s imaginary changed drastically over
the course of the play. Macbeth started out with a conscious, he definitely knew right from wrong
unlike his wife who had no conscious at all, having no shame in any of the actions she under took
during the first act of the play especially. Over time Macbethlost his mindand therefore his actions
and thoughts began to become foul, wicked and unholy. The opposite from Macbeth was Lady
Lady Macbeth who gained a conscious as well as a heart and she realised her wrong doings and felt
extraordinary guilt.
At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth was presented to us as evil and a woman who was
strong and ruthless. She was also the dominant person in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Scene 2 Line 11 12) The death of Duncan got to her heart and allowed her to realise her wrong
doings as she was possessed by culpability. It reminded her of the sorrow of when her father died.
Surprising the audience, Lady Macbeth s personality and persona during act two has beyond
changed.
Act three drastically changed the dynamic of the play. At the start of the play in the first act
Lady Macbeth was the most dominant one out of Macbeth and herself Are you a man? (Act 3,
Scene 4, Lines 58) Though through to act three she is now perceived as the weaker one.
Macbeth now has power over her. Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck, till thou applaud

what to do. She has became vulnerable in her own sorrow and has allowed Macbeth to be dominant
upon her. Her character has changed

Reverend Clementa Pinckney s Speech
Barack Obama, President of the United States, is said to have delivered one of the most
beautifully written and well thought out speeches of his presidency. This speech, (or eulogy), is
a result of the death of Reverend Clementa Pinckney, a man whose life was cut short under the
hands of a white supremacist. Obama s speech resonated so well with citizens because of the
writing and the delivery altogether. Specifically, the internal workings of the speech were current
with Reverend Pinckney s principles and beliefs. The fortitude laced in his voice also contributed
greatly to the effect the speech had on the people. President Obama was able to relate extremely
well to speech goers because he used Reverend Clementa Pinckney s faith as a

As you get older the function of your lungs started to deteriorate, it reduces the way that you inflate

obstruct it more.
When you reach the age of 30 about 1 square foot of respiratory membrane (where lots of cells
are and where gas exchange takes place) is lost each year. Although it will be depended on the
influences of smoking, alcohol etc.
The respiratory deals with stress by breathing harder, when you breath slower it can really help

Move Without Lots Of Boxes Research Paper
So, it s settled. You ve picked out one of the best apartments in Chino, California and you re
ready to move. You already envision yourself driving down the freeway, enjoying weekly farmer
s market, and making impromptu trips to LA. While the excitement of moving to Chino is
understandable, it s also important to avoid putting the cart before the horse. Proper planning is
wise to experience a smooth transition to Chino. Try some of these tips when you re preparing for
the big move! Gather Supplies What s a move without lots of boxes? Unless you have boxes stores
in random areas of your home, most people have to go purchase boxes. Before making a big
purchase of boxes you ll later throw away, visit some of the local grocery stores. Go to the
customer service desk and find out their policy regarding boxes. Grocery stores get shipments of
boxes in on a weekly basis. Normally, grocery stores workers will break down the boxes and throw
them away. Ask if it s possible to get some boxes for yourself. Most stores give them away for free.
This is a great way to secure one of the most vital supplies for a big move. Additionally, don t forget
to purchase lots of heavy duty scotch or masking tape. A heavy duty marker and labels are great for
each box as well.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Examples Of Gothic Elements In Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights is a romantic/gothic novel which was first published in 1847 under the
pseudonym ″Ellis Bell . It was originally written by Emily Bronte who died the same year at the
age of thirty. Emily Bronte was born on 30 July 1818 in the village of Thornton, West Riding of
Yorkshire, in Northern England, to Maria Branwell and an Irish father, Patrick Bronte. She was the
younger sister of Charlotte Bronte and the fifth of six children, though the two oldest girls, Maria
and Elizabeth, died in childhood of tuberculosis. In 1820, shortly after the birth of Emily s younger
sister Anne, the family moved eight miles away to Haworth, where Patrick was employed as
perpetual curate; here the children developed their literary talents. Wuthering... Show more content

The genre further continued to become popular throughout the romantic period and its
characteristics were adopted into various modes of literature, including, Wuthering Heights. It is a
tale of tragic love and all consuming passion, these romantic themes and a sense of horror and the
supernatural combine to make Wuthering Heights a Gothic novel. Quintessential elements of
Gothic fiction include the above mentioned themes as well as grotesque imagery, dark and
foreboding mansions and landscapes, chaos, pain and doomed love, all themes present in Bronte s
work. Gothic elements are used by Bronte in allowing the novel to transcend the binds of the
merely romantic. She uses the Gothic style to evoke terror and fear.
The Gothic atmosphere is frequently transmitted through the setting of an antiquated or seemingly
antiquated space, such as castles or mansions in faraway countries, and through raging storms, dark
nights, tyranny, incarceration, and torture (Morris 301). When considering the abovementioned
criteria for a narrative to be categorized as being a Gothic, there can be no doubt that Emily Bronte
s story of the self contained world of Wuthering Heights, indeed, is a Gothic

  • 2. Nursing Quality Indicators Abstract The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators were published in an effort to build on previously collected quality data and further develop nursing knowledge to provide best practice nursing care. This paper explores eight scholarly articles that report on the relationship between hand hygiene compliance and the nursing sensitive indicator of nosocomial infections. These items will be reviewed; a needs assessment, high reliability standards, just culture principals, quality improvement implications, a plan for future action using the Plan Do Study Act model, and summarization of ethical implications. Health care organizations must engage in robust process improvement for hand hygiene (HH) compliance for the resultant reduction... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This aligns with the model of Plan Do Study Act. It is crucial to understand what we are trying to accomplish, how we will know that a change is an improvement, and what changes can be made that will actually result in improvement. Prevention strategies of nosocomial infections related to poor hand hygiene include revision of: orientation, training processes, competency assessments, equipment cleaning, handwashing procedures, switching to the use of single use IV flush vials, adding strategically located waterless hand rubs, defining supervisory expectations, conducting in services, team trainings, and tracking systems (Infection control related sentinel events, 2003). Potential solutions to noncompliance include: consistent skin protectant application, reduced time required for handwashing, and antiseptic stations at the bedside and room entry points (Boyce, 1999). Hospital administrators must create an organizational atmosphere in which adherence to recommended HH practices are considered an integral part of providing high quality care (Boyce, 1999). • 3. Theme Of Corruption In Huck Finn There is a quote, at the base of the Statue of Liberty that reads; Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free... This quote reflects the feeling of great opportunity many immigrants felt they would receive upon coming to America. This was also the mentality many American believed all received through our constitution s promise of; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In Mark Twains novel, Huckleberry Finn, the structure of the main character s relationship with society is made to show the reader the toxicity of the Reconstruction Era showing that despite what people believed about the time period after the civil war was a lot like the period before. Par consequence of Huck Finn s structure, the era twenty five years later known as the Progressive Era could also be used as a location for a similar novel. The important aspects of Huck Finn that would go towards any paralleling novel, would be, the elements of a young child torn between their society and themselves, the themes of racial intolerance, and the themes of societal corruption. Like Huck Finn, this novel would be read differently by different people of different descents of the year 1900, and the people of today. After stating the above, it is important for a discourse on the structure of Huck Finn s character to take place. Huck Finn is a young boy of about twelve or fourteen, who in addition to feeling a great sense of isolation, which is because he is caught between the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many may disagree on surrogate mothers because the paternal mother does not have the same connection as a mother whose baby is growing and developing inside her. Some may argue that Monica could not have kids, but that point can be fought with the choice of adoption. Surrogacy was supported by a few states and traditional surrogacy in the 1990s was not commonly nor legally supported. One case in 1990 explains how a surrogate mother wanted to have custody of the child after admitting she had developed an emotional bondage with the baby. The judge denied her custody and decided to have the child raised by his genetic parents. The judge thought about the child s sake; he did not want the boy to grow up with the confusion of having relationships with two mothers and a father. Judge Parslow stated to the California Legislature that if any surrogate agreements withstand, the surrogate must understand the psychological evaluation she will undergo. • 5. Slavery In The 1800s Mason Fleischauer Rahner Collegio Mr. Arthur Slavery Essay In the 1700 s and 1800 s, the planter elite class of the American South conspired with both federal and state governments and other whites to institutionalize slavery in order to protect their economic and social power and way of life. Their efforts were generally wide spread, simple, blatant and generally very effective. At the federal level, southerners in the House of Representatives, who were often controlled and funded by the planter elites, won approval of James Madison s resolution which declared that Congress ha[s] no authority to interfere in the emancipation of slaves, or in the treatment of them within any of the States. Laws like the Alabama Slave Code of 1852 not only required all whites to patrol plantations so slaves did not escape, they also prohibited slaves from travelling without their masters, from carrying any kind of weapon, from owning property and from gathering in groups larger than five (Primary Source Packet). Most any violation of the Code resulted in branding, whipping or death. These regulations prevented slaves from ever gaining power, defending themselves or trying to organize or rebel against slavery. They also helped the elites control poor yeomen whites by giving them jobs, minor government positions and rewards for patrolling and capturing escaped slaves. The Plantation Slave Roles also incentivized slaves to follow authority even if it meant hiding their beliefs and emotions or even beating or whipping other slaves (Primary Source Packet). The Roles effectively helped the planter elites institutionalize slavery with the help of slaves. The planter elite class relied on slavery in order to protect their economic way of life. They used their wealth and power to ensure that the northern states and federal government did not interfere with slavery in the south. The elites similarly used their wealth and power to establish local and state laws to prevent slaves from gaining power or rebelling, and they also incentivized poor whites to support slavery by rewarding with money, jobs and minor government positions. All of these actions effectively institutionalized slavery and preserved the wealth and power of the planter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Study On The Mammalian Diving Reflex Introduction: The mammalian diving reflex represents a primary physiological mechanism to maximize underwater excursions in air breathing animals. Traditionally, the oxygen conserving reflex consists of three metabolic and cardiovascular adjustments: (1) notable bradycardia; (2) selective peripheral vasoconstriction; and (3) increased blood flow to the viscera (Kawakami et al., 1967). Previous studies have observed such a response in birds and mammals, generalizing the considerable reduction of heart rate, or diving bradycardia, as indicative of the response (Butler, 1982). The evolutionary success of these diving animals relies partly on the functional significance of reducing metabolic demands to prologue underwater survival. Although... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, Gooden (1994) describes apnea as an essential element to the diving reflex; it ensures not only the prevention of water inhalation, but also acts as an energy saving device through decreasing nerve stimulation to the diaphragm and intercostals. Therefore, heart rate will be monitored under both experimental conditions and compared to the resting rate and apneic resting rate. As a profound autonomic phenomenon, further establishment of the diving reflex in humans will shed light on the preservation of the reflex and its role in the survival during near drowning experiences. Only by examining the physiological response in humans can we appreciate the evolutionary significance of this innate neural circuitry. Methods: An untrained 22 year old male human subject was chosen. A PT 104 pulse plethysmograph was wrapped around his dominant (right) index finger. Connected through a IXTA data acquisition unit, heart rate was monitored on LabScribe. The recordings were measured with ten seconds of leeway at the beginning and end to allow baseline pulse recovery. Digital marks labeled the time interval of the described action. First the subject s heart rate was measured during a resting phase for twenty seconds. He was encouraged to relax and remain inactive in order to confirm an accurate baseline reading. • 9. World Trade Organization ( Wto ) World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international institution that supervises and ensures the executions of trade agreements and treaties among economic entities. Its headquarter is located in Geneva (Switzerland). It was called Economic UN for its status of international trade. The volumes of trade of the members have become the majority international trade. It is the maker, supervisor and executor of multilateral trade treaties and agreements. It is an important place to settle trade disputes. It is an influential participant in the international economic cooperation with other global institutions and one of the most important international organizations. WTO was born out of the negotiations called the Uruguay Round and earlier negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade(GATT) on 15th April 1994, aiming at cover the shortages of GATT. GATT, the product of international free trade, is the predecessor of WTO, which was an intergovernmental agreement about the rules of tariffs and trade signed on 30th October 1947. However, it had been an interim agreement but not a formal international institution since it came into force, which had hugely limited its processes of executions. Firstly, it lacked of legal binding and powerful measures. Secondly, the interim agreement had some grey area, which cause the agreement could not be implemented accurately. Finally, GATT discriminated different social systems. With eight multilateral tariff and trade negotiations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Examples Of Diasporic Culture In Home To Harlem 2. A ship is a significant term regarding the context of diasporic culture because it is a vehicle which can move between various places. Ideally, it could be used as a tool to explore one s identity. The image of the ship is utilized in almost all the texts which we have read thus far this semester, from texts such as Claude McKay s Home to Harlem to the opening scenes of Zora Neale Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God to Marcus Garvey s essays and speeches in Philosophy and Opinion. Where ships remain a metaphorical component of the two fictional texts mentioned, it represents a vehicle which would further a Pan African agenda in the second. In Home to Harlem, McKay s protagonist, Jake, spends his time on various forms of transportation, such as trains. However, he begins his tale on a freighter on his way back to Harlem. The first image we see of him is one on a ship, making a choice to come back to the United States. As an American protagonist, Jake s diasporic identity has been created by ships through the slave trade while simultaneously being steered by ships through his own autonomy regarding decisions on where to live at any moment. As mentioned before, Marcus Garvey s essays and speeches hinge on the return to Africa. This return would be accomplished through the Black Star, which never began its journey in relocating black individuals to Africa. Overall, both texts represent ships as a vehicle which can give individuals with diasporic backgrounds some form of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most scarifies and prayers are towards gods to get their help or something from them. In both Homer s Iliad and chapter thirteen in the Metamorphosis, this theme is seen. In the Iliad, sacrifices are done by Chrysies and by Agamemnon, one wanted his daughter back the other wanted to win a war. In the chapter thirteen of The Metamorphosis, Achillesforces the Greeks to scarified someone for him as an act of forgiveness and regret. Also, a man call Aeneas, did a sacrificed to the gods to help him through his journey to a new hometown. The constant source of wealth in the empire was due to many factors such as the trade concessions on the Atlantic coast and the need for salt and gold that strengthened the economy. The trade concessions on the Atlantic coast was a form of taxing system in order to trade with the West African empire (WHFUA Mali Songhai, 1). • 13. The Process Of Matching Hospitals And Residents Problem Initial Solution The process of matching hospitals and residents was chaotic and confusing before the NRMP began to be used in 1952. The main way hospitals chose medical students was to extend an offer to the student as early as they could. The demand of the hospitals was greater than the number of students looking for residencies, prompting considerable competition among hospitals for interns. 1 This competition lead to hospitals presenting students offers earlier than others could. With offers so early, hospitals could not know the final class standings or grades of the students by the time they finished school.1 In the most extreme cases, hospitals would send offers to students two years preceding the internship.1 In 1926, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The small adjustments began in 1945; the first of which would help students by resolving that hospitals should allow students 10 days after an offer had been made to consider whether to accept or reject it. 1 In the year 1946, another change was made and students were given up to eight days to respond.1 In 1949, the AAMC proposed that appointments should be made by telegram at 12:01 A.M., November 15, with applicants not required to accept or reject them until 12:00 noon the same day. Even this 12 hour waiting period was rejected by the American Hospital Association (AHA) as too long 1. They agreed on the Appointment of Interns which contained that no specified waiting period after 12:01 A.M. is obligatory 3. Even after these changes were made, it was clear that there were still problems in the matching process. In order to avoid these problems and the costs they imposed, it was proposed, and ultimately agreed, that a more centralized matching procedure should be tried 1. Second Iteration of the Solution Ultimately, the students were unhappy with modified original system. Their decisions had to be made quickly and without the ability to consider other offers. The hospitals had to select students before the students had developed any notable skills or even knew their specialty. Named as a form of congestion and market failure by Roth in 2008, it was evident that changes in the residency matching program needed to be made. Thus, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Stakeholders along with elected officials, organizations, and special interest groups are valued based on their contributions and connections. In comparison amongst all organizations, healthcare stakeholders play a key integral part because of regulations. Health care is highly regulated and policy driven and the right personnel in your corner can go a long way. Many healthcare stakeholders are involved in the development of policy and have key capital connections to promote and deny potential health care business altering regulations. They provide the funds which give organizations power to promote and push their policies through legislatures. The funds that they provide can also be utilized to defund conflicting policies. The main goal for stakeholders is profitability, more profit is equivalent to more power. Aligned with profitability stakeholders invest in productivity that yields the most profitability. Unfortunately, the influence that stakeholders have on policy making can be directly related to money, they continue to hold great power in the process because all promoted policies need a beneficiary. • 24. Taking a Look at Migraines Migraines Migraines, the head pounding agony that is experienced by millions worldwide. They are severe, reoccurring headaches which can last as long as 72 hours. Many who suffer from migraines also experience nausea and sensitivity to noise, light and smell. THE HISTORY Migraines aren t recent, in fact that have been around since as early as 7,000 BC, but unfortunately valid treatment was not around back then. Trepenation is the earliest form of treatment available for migraines, in which one purposefully drilled multiple holes into the head of the sufferer in order to remove the evil spirits from one s head and was believed to be effective whether that point of view was developed from being consistently closed minded or the surviving patients had experienced the absolute pinnacle of the Placebo effect . The first effective form of treatment for migraines was only developed multiple thousand years later in 1868, in which a substance created from a fungus known as ergot was used. It continued to be used and developed until eventually during the late 20th century when more effective methods were created and confirmed. SYMPTOMS Unfortunately migraines are not as simple as the occasional headache, but generally occur in phases which are as follows. The Prodrome phase: The phase that generally occurs first, it is majority mood related but includes a few physical characteristics. • 28. Mate Analysis Essay Strategic male mate choice minimizes ejaculate consumption (in bottle tail squid) Sexual reproduction is costly. As a result, both sexes often use a variety of mating tactics to reduce their reproductive costs (Arnqvist and Rowe 2005). Research, to date, has traditionally centered on how females attempt to mitigate the cost of mating, due to their often comparatively higher gametic and parental investments (e.g., McNamara et al. 2008; Nilsen et al. 2010). However, male strategies that reduce mating costs have received far less attention. To minimize such costs, male reproductive effort should be directed toward females that will provide the greatest fitness payoffs (Wedell et al. 2002). However, accurate mate evaluation is often difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To test whether males differed in reproductive investment toward gravid (carrying eggs or young; pregnant) and nongravid females, Researchers used a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with stepwise selection and, depending on the variable, either a binomial or Poisson error distribution (PROC GLIMMIX, SAS v9.2). RESULTS Effects of size and female reproductive condition on male investment The only factor determining male mating attempts was size ratio (F1,40 = 9.42, P = 0.004, n = 42, Figure 1a) with males more likely to attempt mating with females that were proportionally larger. Female spermatophore consumption. Females did not appear to conserve a minimum number of spermatophores for future fertilizations when eating spermatophores (number of spermatophores after consumption: minimum = 8, maximum = 35, range = 27), with no increase in consumption when males invested heavily (controlled for female size: F1,15 = 3.53, P = 0.079). Likewise Zimbardo s (1971) experiment, studying the way prisoners and guards interacted, demonstrated similar ethical failings, such as consent gained without individuals being made fully aware of the involvements; physical, emotional and psychological harm subjected; violation of rights, including privacy, respect, confidentiality and the ability to withdraw (). Fascinated by the volume of ordinary individuals who executed terrible things to others during WWII, Zimbardo predicted that all people, even the good, had the potential to conduct malevolence when sited in the correct environment (Haney et al, 1973). In a mock prison participants were recruited to play a role, half as prisoners and the rest as guards. Both were dressed accordingly, with the guards wearing a uniform with mirrored sunglasses which promotes anonymity as their emotions are obscured, but yet denotes their position of power and authority. According to Zimbardo (2000) these conditions of deindividuation allow for the facilitation of evil. Subsequently it becomes acceptable to enforce measures which degrade prisoners of their self respect, including being stripped, deloused and ordered to carry a chain around their ankle, whilst the mandatory wearing of a smock and a cap made from a stocking demoralized them as it impacted upon their masculinity. • 31. 3d Printing And Its Effects On The World Of Tissue... 3D Printing On the forefront of tissue scaffold fabrication is 3D printing. 3D printers have a multitude of advantages over traditional scaffold fabrication methods. High print precision allows fibers to be deposited into 3D structures with finely tunable dimensions, 3D printers also have the ability to incorporate multiple materials into the same structure through multiple extrusion heads. Jakus et al. used a 3D extrusion based printer to create a graphene and polylactide co glycolide scaffold and showed it could create a 3D graphene structure (3DG) with features as small as 100 um and as large as 10cm offering a large range of applications. They also showed that 3DG supports human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) adhesion, viability, proliferation, and neurogenic differentiation with significant upregulation of glial and neuronal genes [9]. The ease in fabrication and the ability to precisely modify structure with 3D printers allows for opportunities in a wide range of tissue engineering applications. Incorporating growth factors and other bioactive molecules into a CP It is often desirable to modify the material properties of a polymer to better optimize it for different applications. • 32. Implicit Bias Analysis Implicit Biases in Reader Response Reading Jane Austen has never appealed to me. The combination of dated prose, a general aversion to plots I deemed to be too romantic , and my viewing of the film adaptations were enough to keep me away from her novels. When I was asked to read Persuasion for a class, I was hesitant and unwilling to fully engage with the material. This prevented me from enjoying the book fully. I didn t quite know what was holding me back from enjoying the book, but I knew that it was something more than my explicit biases against Austen. After a little reflection, I realized that my implicit biases were shaping my reading of Austen. My implicit bias against a novel and author that I perceived as overly feminine was coloring how I was interacting with and what messages I was taking from Persuasion (Austen). Implicit biases are the unconscious attitudes that shape our thoughts, actions, and beliefs (Banaji and Greenwald 46; Staats et al. 10; Schneider 169).Their impact is important to study because implicit biases shape our responses to situations. Reader response theory examines how a reader responds to a given text. Theorists such as Jauss and Eco include concepts that implicit bias can and should be built into. Jauss horizons examine how our experiences, expectations, culture, and place in time shape how we react and create meaning. Hoffmannesque Scene is a lithograph printed in black and colored inks on a wove paper that was created in 1921 in Germany. There is no particular color that dominates the entire image or completely catches a viewer s attention. However, Klee emphasized on harmonization of colors by considering not only the combination of the colors but also the composition and the scale of the blocks. Each block blends harmoniously into one another so that it creates a sense of rhythmical or rhythmic changes, even though those colors used are analogous. Therefore, the print reminds me of lyrical melody, especially moody and gentle jazz music.
