Many people get the terms service learning, volunteerism and community service mixed together.
All three were made to make a difference somewhere or in someone s life. The main difference
between these services are the primary intentions of the programs. Service learning primary purpose
is to learn from the experience and to improve their skills. By doing so, they are helping those in
need. Volunteering and communityservice have the most in common, except the fact that
community service can be done without a voluntary basis. Those services are done without the
purpose of learning something from it, even though they can have a learning experience. Even
though most are volunteers doing the job, many can be paid to volunteer, mainly by their job that
persuades their employees to do so.
Houston Food Bank is a private non profit organization. They were established in 1982 and are a
certified member of Feeding America. Their focus is to help end hunger by distributing the most
meals possible to those in need. They can provide 83,000,000 meals a year, which they are trying
to improve in. Most of the meals they pack up are sent to pantries and other organizations that need
food for individuals and families. Usually, food banks do not distribute their meals, but Houston
Food Bank does. With the help of volunteers, they can sort, pack and distribute food. Most of the
food given to them are provided from donors, local companies around the city, and USDA. The
food given to them would go to waste without their help and the volunteers who make the meals
happen. I attended the Houston Food Bank, and while I was there, I could tell they have strong
teamwork within the organization. All the employees knew what to do and how to handle that
many volunteers. They all communicated with the volunteers with a professional, friendly way.
They could get everyone who came in to sign in and get everything set up to start the day. I was
not able to tell one thing that went wrong. It was impressive how neatly and organized they had the
building. The atmosphere, at least for me, made me feel involved and wanting to come back.

communicating with others. I could reduce stress and the effects that it has on me by talking with

Yesterday we had a hunger banquet. The class was split up into three groups: the low class, the
middle class, and the high class. The low class had half of the class. They were the people that

They live in poverty. They usually do not have homes and spend all day trying to find food and

exact mixture of gases in the lighter. The results of this lab were the mass of the lighter, as 100 mL

Background:
The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the
exact mixture of gases in the lighter. While collecting the volume of Butane gas in a lighter, the
molar mass can also be determined. When attempting to find the molar mass, water displacement is
the best method to use. This can be determined because the equal volumes of all gases contain
equal number of particles, so long as they are measured at the same temperature and pressure. Ideal
gas law is the chemistry involved with this experiment. The equations M=mRT/PV and PV=nRT
can be seen throughout this experiment.
