screen. Themes of change, environmental crisis, love, and death are all only a few of the most
common themes that circulate through the Hollywood film industry. According to Annalee Newitz
in her essay When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like Avatar
? , a recurring theme she s
noticed is the theme of white guilt. In her essay, Newitz depicts the movie Avatar as nothing more
than a colorful rehash of this (apparently) common white guilt scenario. This is where the main
white protagonist leaves the oppressive (white) side to join the oppressed native side upon seeing
the error of his ways. Some Americans, including Newitz, believe that movies like Avatar possess
an underlying motive, which includes keeping the white guilt fantasy alive and trying to promote
the idea of leading people of color from the inside rather than from the outside (Newitz). The true
question is whether or not there really is that underlying motive, or if it is just a fabrication based

In the critical essay On the Scarlet Letter , by D.H Lawrence, Lawrence analyzes the character
Hester Prynne from the novel The Scarlet Letter , and how her life is portrayed. According to
Lawrence, Hester is not worthy of the praise she is given by Nathaniel Hawthorne. D.H. Lawrence
uses the techniques of repetition, compact syntax and biblical allusions to effectively convey his
negative attitudes towards Hester Prynne. Lawrence uses the repetition of certain words to drill
them into the reader s mind. The continuous use of the phrase A. Adulteress! throughout the essay
reinforces Hester s sin, and reminds the reader that she is a sinner, rather than someone worthy of
praise (Lawrence). This repetition resembles the physical scarlet letter, in the sense that D.H.
Lawrence is shaming Hester over and over again, similar to how the Puritans shamed Hester
throughout her life. Moreover, the name of the object that was pinned to Hester s breast, The
Scarlet Letter is also repeated throughout Lawrence s essay (Lawrence). By using this phrase,
Hester is reduced to her sin, stripping away all of her good deeds, because the emphasis is
placed on her sinful actions rather than her personal qualities and life after the sin, which does
not give the reader a chance to focus on any positive qualities Hester possesses. In addition, the
scarlet letter holds the negative connotations of sin, punishment and adultery. By repeating Scarlet
Letter , the reader s mind is filled with these negative connotations, thus reiterating Lawrence s
opinion that Hester is the source of evil and her actions should not have been glorified. Lawrence
s repetition of these phrases reinforces Hester s sin and shameful actions, which effectively
conveys his dismissive feelings towards Hester. The use of compact syntax highlights Lawrence s
disapproval of Hester Prynne by abruptly and continuously shooting her down. The concise
sentence Adulteress. Alpha. Abel, Adam. A. America shoots at Hester with negative words
(Lawrence). This rapid fire structure effectively degrades Hester as each word delivers an
individual blow to her character and degrades her, by restating her sin, the letter A which

his purpose. King Hamlet says that he was murdered by Claudius, who had a scandalous

This is important because it shows how Babo chooses to threaten someone for freedom because he
feels that it is justifiable since he was a slave and as such, his life was always forced to obey by his

The poem Perhaps is written by Vera Britain, who was an English writer, feminist and pacifist but

experiences during World War 1 and the beginning of her journey towards pacifism. The poem

In spite of this the poet realises in stanza four that it will be a whole year since her lover has died,
just before Christmas and she then wonders if there will ever be a time that she wont shrink in

dealing well with the loss but its emotional and upsetting losing a close one and the poet shows her
loneliness in the poem.
The final stanza is a reference to the healing power of time which is referred to kind Time .
Although it mentions in the poem the one greatest joy is that time will never heal her grief for
him because my heart for loss of You, was broken, long go. As well as in the last stanza it was a
fact that it was only two months since the poet had lost her fiancГ©, but it makes a round ending to
a poem.
The ending of the poem is poignant and optimistic at the same time and the poem shows that
time is a healer and life does go on. Although nature aids the process of grief as it is a constant
occurrence and continues to live on and provide familiar structure for those coping with the loss
