How Did Mrs. Dunlap Influenced My Writing
Writing is often considered mundane and banal to some students. In fact, people have even
written things down since the beginning of time. I dreaded writing until I had Mrs. Dunlap for 4th
block English during my 8th grade year at Mount Juliet Middle. This is the story about how she
made me the writer I am today with what I like to call Write speration.
When I first went back for my last middle school year, I secretly hoped that I would get a great
English teacher, and I liked her from the first day. She had us do what is called Daily Grammar
Practice (DGP), which greatly strengthened my grammar skills. Mrs. Dunlap also did a unit on
World War II, which I loved, for it combined my two favorite subjects together: English and

It wasn t until Mrs. Dunlap had us read a classic book that got me hooked. The book was called
The Outsiders, and it was unlike anything I had ever read. We dove into the book, exploring its
deeper meaning. She taught me to go to the heart of the story/poem/play and understand the author
s purpose for writing it, from Catching Fire to The Diary Of Anne Frank. It was then that I got
inspired to write my first play, Kingdom Rock.
Since Kingdom Rock was the first play that I had ever written, I felt that Mrs. Dunlap herself
should be the first to read it. After she had finished reading, she brought it back to me and
whispered Good job Kiana, I liked it. She liked it! It made me feel all bubbly inside to think that
Mrs. Dunlap, the one who had inspired me to write it, LIKED it. She encouraged me to write
more, which inspired me to raise the bar.
I write almost every day with her in mind. I am a Sophomore in high school now, and I ve had
many teachers in my lifetime, but none of them had left an imprint on my heart like Mrs. Dunlap
did. If I could see her again, I would tell her that she was my Write speration for my love of
