Starbucks’ Strategy
What are some of the decision factors that Starbucks assess?
Starbucks strategy for expanding its retail business is to increase its market share in existing
markets and to open stores in new markets where the opportunity exists to become the leading
specialty coffee retailer. In support of this strategy, the Company opened 647 new stores during the
fiscal year end in September of 2001. At fiscal year end, Starbucks had 2,971 Company operated
stores in 38 states, the District of Columbia and five Canadian provinces (which comprise the
Company operated North American retail operations), as well as 252 stores in the United Kingdom,
25 stores in Thailand and 18 stores in Australia (which comprise the Company operated

Second, consultants said that no Chinese would ever lose face by drinking from a cup in the
street since the Chinese preferred not to eat or drink in public. Starbucks no smoking policy came
out of its desire for nothing cologne, perfume, nor tobacco smoke to interfere with the smell of
their dark roasted beans. Upon entering Asia, Starbucks stuck with its no smoking policy, which
according to interviews turns out to be a welcomed policy. Even the smokers claimed not to have a
problem with smoking outside.
Although the Chinese dislike drinking in public, the high awareness of the brand and the Chinese
market being so brand driven outweighs this habit. The Chinese consumers perceived the high
prices as conveying quality and sophistication. Retailers keep this in mind as they charge more for
public consumption, as customers go to Starbucks if not for the coffee, but to present themselves as
modern Chinese in a public setting. China s tightly regulated business environment still throws up
lots of hurdles for Starbucks. Its fragmented government and currency conversion limits make
banking difficult. If I want to move money out of China, it s a hellish process, says Charles
Jemley, Starbucks vice president of finance in China. Book bags and coffee mugs barely made it
out of customs in time for Starbucks to pass them out at a rural teacher training session

70 years ago, Edward Sapir introduced a new concept of linguistics. He said that language moved
on every time and then created their own forms and never static. Every word, every grammatical
element, proverbs, sounds and accents configured which was changed slowly and this was the
ways how a language could long lasting. This concept of language made the other linguists
interested. The change of meaning could happen because of some reasons, according to Millet a

The name of action or event can be transferred into something that predate and follow the change.
For example, in English, collation now defined into different meaning perbandingan and makanan
ringan where as both of them are relates. Previously, in Catholic ceremony the reading from
Collationes Patrum by Cassian usually read before the end of mass, it followed by snack which
called collation because the snack related with the reading. So, the name of book followed by the
snack that also consume in the close time in mass period. Third, the relation can create the change
of metonymy, there are some part that is important but sometime it divide into own category, or we
can call it pars pro toto. For example in Indonesia, pasukan baju kuning it refers to the group who
clean up the road. And the last metonymy is simple and famous because we don t need the worst
and crucial speech. We know that most of the founder named something which they found by their
name. For example, the terminology in electricity ampere, volt, ohm named by the founder Andre
Ampere, Count Allessandro Volta, and Georg Simon Ohm. 3. Popular Etymology Etymology is the
branch of linguistics that studies the origin and development of words and other linguistic forms.
The examples of the areas that are studied include the earliest origins of a word, how its meanings
and connotations have changed, the meanings and origins of its component parts, whether or how it

Zoos Literature Review
Are the enclosures in zoos safe and beneficial for the animals? Both authors have different opinions
when it comes to zoo enclosure, but Benbow focuses on how the enclosures have improved over
the years, where Fraser focuses on how the improved enclosures are still not quite safe enough for
the animals. This helped me to understand that although the enclosures have improved, they still
need some work.
In an article by S.M.P. Benbow called Zoos: Public Places to View Private Lives, she discusses how
zoo enclosures have improved over time. She goes into detail about how the enclosures started as
something that was supposed to be exactly like there habitat, and as time goes on it has gotten more
real. Benbow also discusses the different technological advances in the enclosures, and how they
are a space that represents a different place (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23). S.M.P. Benbow worked in the
Department Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba, and is now the Associate
Dean at the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. This particular
article was part of her Peer Reviewed works. The motivation behind this work and many others
is her love of the environment. This article is a peer reviewed article, so the structure and
language is professional and scholarly. This article puts a lot of emphasis on zoos being
developed to be like their natural habitats. The majority of the article gives detail on the
development of zoos over the years. The author takes time to explain everything, and backs up all
evidence with quotes and information from other sources. Benbow seems incredibly
knowledgeable on Zoos and the environment. She also leaves out her opinion most of the time and
give mostly facts, but she seems to think the advancements made have helped improve enclosures.
This author makes the idea of zoos seem less bad by explaining how the enclosures have improved
tremendously (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23).
In an article written by Stephen Fraser called Safe Havens, he discusses how enclosures are still
not safe enough. Fraser starts off with a story of a tiger who jumped over and attacked three men.
They found out that the reason the tiger attacked was because the men were taunting the

Self Reflection
Coming into a college writing course, I did not expect it to be easy. Throughout high school
essays were very easy to write due to teachers cutting way too much slack and handing out easy
grades. Writing has always been difficult for me, but I feel this is because I have not been
challenged yet to demonstrate my full writingability. I had yet to develop my own voice as a
writer. Throughout this course, I was met with many challenges to bring out the true writer inside
of me and because of this, I was ultimately able to grow as a writer. The essays that I have written
throughout the WRC 1013 course demonstrate that I have developed better annotation skills,
communication skills and personal responsibility skills; however, I still need to improve in
proofreading and learning how to receive more revisions from my peers.
After going through my essays, one self reflection throughout my papers I was able to gather
was my growth in developing good annotation throughout my chosen sources. For example, in
my first paper Behind the Screen VS. The Real World , my annotation and gathering information
from sources was very poor. This is shown in the essay where I completely stated the opposite of
what Rita Dove was trying to say in her piece Loose Ends . I state that, As you can see, this is
one of many reasons as to how so much screen time can have a negative influence on people
which is what Rita Dove is implying in her article ( Behind the Screen Vs. The Real World 2). This

Today s workforce is not what it was years ago. Times have changed. Management has shifted and
leaders are scrambling to find new and innovative ways to maintain their success. In a successful
organization, employees and management share the same goals, communicate effectively and adapt
to change. Creating a successful organization can be difficult. However, it can be done through the
use of effective leaders, goals, strong communication and a balance between departments. While
trying to maintain a successful organization requires a lot of work, it is almost inevitable that
establishments will fail and issues will arise. One far too often hears of issues that arise within
organizations. While these issues can be minimal, others can affect an... Show more content on

Examples Of Greed In The Crucible
Introduction:Greed does not rest until it is satisfied, and greed is never satisfied (Eastland). The
play The Crucible by Arthur Miller shows the audience that through the aspirations and actions of
Abigail Williams and Thomas Putnam, if greed is (lustier than pity) able to out power pity, there
will be suffering. Abigail and Thomas use the witch trials as a type of greed to seek revenge, gain
power and increase their wealth, which causes devastation and destruction in the town of Salem.
Point of Comparison #1: Seek Revenge An act of retaliation for an offence is known as seeking
revenge. Through the actions by Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams the readers determine that
they use the witch trials to seek revenge in hope to conquer their greedy vindictive feeling, however
this leads to suffering. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thomas Putnam s greed for power in the court conquers his morals. Due to this, the amount of
suffering and devastation in the town of Salem starts to escalate because of the amount of false
accusations Putnam is allowed to make and be successful in. Abigail uses her innocence as a
young kid to get the court to believe all she says; by doing this she gains power in the court.
When John Proctor forces Mary Warren to tell the truth about the voodoo doll and save
Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail betrays her friends and goes into a state of insanity as if Mary Warren
is sending the devil after her; all to keep herself safe and away from the accusations. Abigail s
selfishness and greediness during the witch trials is lustier than her pity and this now allows her to
use her innocence in the court as an advantage to gain power. The suffering Abigail has caused
now spread to multiple people and is devastating the town of Salem, while showing no signs of
slowing

Forest Succession Report
Introduction
Forest succession is the process of change in the species structure in a forested community over
time. Succession is fundamental to forest ecology because it allows ecologist to predict what
communities will do in disturbances such as wildfires, flooding, and clear cuts. Succession can
be site and time specific requiring the use of scales such as micro of mega. Based on the
knowledge from previous labs such as silvics and seed ecology students predictions could be that
because of seed banks and species silvics succession can drastically change over time based on a
stands management.

The 10 BAF prism was used to establish a variable radius plot. Percent cover in each plot had to be
examined and determined by each group. Data collected varied based on type of plot used. The
1/2000th acre plot because of its small size focused only on number of grasses and forbes
species and their percent cover. The 1/200th plot was larger so species of trees, shrubs, vines
forbes, and grasses were recorded and their percent cover. Finally the 10 BAF variable radius plot
recorded only number of species and their abundance that met the basal area requirements.
Results
Results among the site showed a trend for increased species richness and basal area after the
open field site. However, the open field had the highest percent cover of grasses compared to the
other sites at 55%. Grass percent cover was low in the 20 year old pine stand which was 2.4% and
began to increase slightly at the mixed hardwoods site at 4.6%. Basal area was highest at the
mixed hardwood site and was lowest at the open field where there were little to no trees.

The Likely Cause Of Earthquakes In The United States
Name: Olawale Oluwakoya
Media report: The likely cause of recent southeast US earthquakes.
The southeastern part of the United States should not encounter too many seismic activities because
it is located in the interior of the North American Plate, a good distance away from plate boundaries
where earthquakes mostly occur. However the southeast have seen some seismic, the latest was the
2011 magnitude 5.8 earthquake at Virginia.
Scientists recently reported in a new study a likely explanation for this unexpected incident, some
tiny pieces of the mantle under the region have been breaking off and moving deep down into the
Earth. Thereby weakening the remaining plates and making it more prone to slipping that causes
earthquakes. Most study authors have concluded that this process is ongoing and very likely ...

Earthquakes does not often occur in the middle of plates, however they do happen when old faults
or rifts far below the surface reactivate. These areas are weak compared to the surrounding plate,
and can slip easily and cause earthquake.
A CAT scan of the Earth
To find out what had been happening below the surface, researchers created 3D images of the
mantle portion of the North American Plate. Seismologists image the internal part of the Earth by
tracing the paths of seismic waves created by earthquakes as they move through the ground. The
waves move faster through colder rocks and less quickly through warmer rocks. Rocks cool and
harden as they become older, so the faster seismic waves, the older the rock.
The researchers used tremors created by earthquakes a little more than 2,000 miles away to create
a 3D map of the mantle. They discovered that plate thickness in the southeast U.S. is uneven, they
saw thick areas of dense, aged rock stretching down and thin areas of less dense, younger

Taming Of The Shrew Research Paper
In the play taming of the shrew and 10 things I hate about you, I believe relationships are shown
differently because in 10 things I hate about you relationships are shown through just dating out of
fun/ love instead of in taming of the shrew where it was about money and kind of an agreement
with the father and no choice for the women. This is seen in the relationships of Katherine and
Petruchio.
The difference between the relationship of Katherine and Petruchio in the play Taming Of the

fall in love with her, she also had to fall for him where in the play she didn t really have a choice
she just had to marry him because her father said. For I am he born to tame you, Kate, and bring
you from a wild Kate to a Kate conformable as other household kates. This shows their
relationship because of the time period on how he was responsible for making her his woman
and she wouldn t really tame herself and she didn t have a choice. I think Petruchio really did
love her he just didn t know how to show it because of the time period. In the movie he treated
his women way better and actually took care of her when she was drunk and cared for her way
more than in the play where he basically hated her and just wanted to marry her for her money. In
the play petruchio wouldn t even stay at their wedding and he wanted to leave but Kat wouldn t.

Sport And The American Dream Analysis
Tennis, A Step to a Women s Athleticism Awareness
Tennis is a sport that might not catch people s interest on TV, but it surely is a sport that people
admire and love to play. The one reason why it might be very admirable would probably be
because it is not inclusive to any race, ethnicity, or culture. If you look at the tennis players that are
involved in the game, their backgrounds are not very similar to other tennis players. Unlike
basketball, you would notice that it is dominated by African Americans. Despite that, one of the
negative attributes of tennis is the dominance of males. Tennis is a game that is open to everyone;
however, there are gender differences that affect the women players. Women don t get paid the
same as men, men s finals attracts more attention and is awaited for more than women s finals, also
the men tend to get more opportunities outside of tennis (commercials).

The Philippine-American War
This was America s first true colonial war as a world power. After defeating Spain in Cuba and in
the Philippines in 1898, the U.S. purchased the Philippines, Puerto Rico and several other islands
from the Spanish. However, the Filipinos had been fighting a bloody revolution against Spain since
1896 and had no intention of becoming a colony of another imperialist power. In February of 1899,
fighting broke out between the occupying American Army and the Filipino forces. The basic causes
of the Philippine American Warcan be found in the U.S. government s quest for an overseas empire
and the desire of the Filipino people for freedom.
Following the surrender of the Spanish colonial government in the Philippines to American military
forces in August 1898, tensions developed between U.S. and Filipino forces near Manila. The ...

The impact of the U.S. war in the Philippines continued for three and a half years before President

One issue I would like to change today is breast feeding. I think it should be normalized. Yes,

Generating Electricity
Criteria A Criteria B
Farzad Siganporia

Today in our modern society, us humans take a variety of things for granted. One particularly,
goes unnoticed. One, which we cannot live without, and one which changed our lives forever.
ELECTRICITY. Electricity exists in a metropolis city, to aircrafts in the air to every remote corner
on our earth. During the 1800s, British scientist Michael Faraday discovered the fundamentals of
generating electricity. His method, which is movement of a loop of wire between the poles of a
magnet, is still used today. Without electricity, the world would be a different place to live in.

Electricity is then produced. Usually, several wind towers are built together in windy places to be
called wind farms.
Clipart
Although this method tackles the problem as we can rely less on fossil fuels, it does have some
limitations in the economic factor. Wind turbines are extremely costly to develop and the cost
is recovered only decades later. The cost for a commercial scale wind turbine ranges from $1.2
million to $2.6 million, per MW of nameplate capacity installed. Most of the wind turbines today
are 2 MW so roughly after installation, a single wind tower could cost around $3.5 million. This
is a very large amount and a very high initial cost for a company to invest in. This is one factor
why countries usually select fossil fuels. (Carla, eHow)
Another factor is the social factor. Wind farms are extremely noisy and spoil the view of people
living near them. Wind farms affect communities a lot and force communities to relocate. This
also affects the life and welfare of human beings who live near them. It causes noise pollution as
well as it is an eye sore. So therefore it may be a problem for some countries to develop
communities in that area and a problem for local people who live nearby. (GCSE Bitesize)
However, to every dark cloud has a silver lining. There are also benefits of wind power. In the
ethical factor, it is a positive step. Using wind power instead of fossil fuels

Leadership Styles and Their Effect on CEOs
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to analyze, compare, and contrast the leadership styles of two influential
CEOs. I have collected information from many internet sources that elaborate on the life,
achievements, and misfortunes of Jack Welch and Steve Jobs, and how they overcame their
obstacles to become the best CEOs of all time.

Essay on Analysis of Marie Kashpaw in the Film Saint Marie
Marie Kashpaw/Lazarre transitions successfully from not knowing who she is to being proud of
who she has become. She is able to come out of bad experiences and use them to improve and
guide her. She learns from her mistakes is able to look at her own flaws which help her grow as
a person. She is not too ashamed to be able to say that she was naive, ignorant, or made the wrong
decision. She thinks before she acts with a plan in mind.
In Saint Marie (1934) Marie is only fourteen years old and is trying to find her identity and sense

A big part of the reason Leopolda saw Marie as different proved to be that Marie was part Native
American which meant that Satan had a stronger presence in her than the other white children. In
many ways Marie Lazzare proves herself to be heroic throughout both stories Saint Marie and
Flesh and Blood (1957). Even though she is only fourteen in Saint Marie she successfully escaped
a dangerous situation with a mixture of luck and intelligence. Marie uses intuition, strength, and
impulse to break free from Leopolda s grasp, while at the same time being lucky enough to be
successful at escaping by fooling the other nuns. At the same time she is an anti hero because
Marie put herself in that situation not because she primarily wanted to be part of that religion, but
because she was trying to fit in where she felt welcomed which is caused by her naivety.

Everyday our lifestyles affect what we think and how we react. This lesson describes the same

Kasushika Hokusai Analysis
Term Essay #1
Katsushika Hokusai is a Japanese artist that likes to stretch your imagination, in both artworks it s
almost as he s indulging into these wild fantasies. As if he s trying to tell a crazy adventure from
his point of view. I particularly enjoy these artworks because it displays the courage in obstacles to
face much greater than himself, or in this case nature. Katsushika Hokusai creates a sense as if we
were all children again, with an imagination where we can hear, play and see natural environments
from a new perspective.
My choices on non western art I selected were both pieces by Katsushika Hokusai. The first called
Kanagawa Oki Nami Ura from 36 Views of Fuji made in the 18th 19th century. My second piece
called Kiso, Amida From Waterfall Series made in the 18th 19th century. In comparison to
Katsushika Hokusai two artworks both are woodblock prints, we see many characteristics that relate
to each other in a natural environment because Katsushika Hokusai was one of the first artist to
introduce landscape in his prints. Both pieces have mountains within the pictures, which is a major
landmark in Japanese natural landscapes. They both have strong repeating patterns that create a
sense of rhythm that helps organize the viewer s eye. Both artworks have these elements in their
painting that gives you a sense of rhythm and harmony. Both artworks provide so much contrast, the
hard impact of blues set against the soft sky and the starling white waterfall.

Argumentative Essay On Mermaids
Mermaids, half human, half fish, have been the subject of sailors fishtails for hundreds of years.
Obviously the idea of mermaids is nothing but mythology, nevertheless, you still find people
trying to prove the existence of these mythical beings. Popular culture has depicted mermaids in
two drastically different ways. One, as beautiful creatures able to draw in anyone without saying
a word, who will do no harm to humans; some go as far as saying they will help humans. The
other, as evil, conniving creatures, eager to lead men to their deaths. Long before there were
mermaids ,some 4,000 years ago, there was Ea, the Babylonian God of the sea. He had the lower
body of a fish and the upper body of a man, much like we see depicted today in mermaids.... Show

Argument from Authority is when the person who is presenting evidence in an argument has no
real authority on the topic or facts relevant to the the claim being made. Christopher Columbus
wasn t a biologist, he was an explorer eager to find gold in a new world by any means necessary.
If given the opportunity he probably would have enslaved the mermaids had he actually

Manatees are animals with a large body and a battle shaped tale, with a round face. They move
slowly through warm water areas such as the Caribbean. Up until Columbus defended upon the area
he, nor his men, had encountered such animals, making it very easy for them to confuse the two.
When Columbus encountered his mermaids he said ...he saw three mermaids who came quite high

T. F. Thistleton Dyer s The Ghost World
The Banshee, originally known as the Irish fairy creature, originated in the Celtic Isles of Ireland,
Scotland, and Great Britain. This legend has been passed down through generations due to its
persistent haunting nature. The angry female spirit flies several feet above the ground at night
terrifying people with her ghostly screams. A Banshees high pitched shrieking foresees the death of
someone shortly to come.
The ghostly woman has no physical body, but she may appear wearing a long funeral robe and
unkempt hair. Though this is the most common, it is only one of the several different forms in
which the banshee may appear. The old hag is also said to be seen as a washerwoman washing the
blood off someone s clothes who is about to die. She may also appear as a unearthly, beautiful
young woman. No matter her age she almost always is characterized as wearing a long flowing
robe with long hair of the same color.
This fairy woman has been known in Gaelic myths and legends for centuries, but as early as 1898
she made her first appearance in literature. In T. F. Thistleton Dyer s The Ghost World he explains
how only ancient families are honored with the visit of the Banshee. Although through not much

there are solutions mankind can take to reduce its effects on our planet. Some may argue that
humans are not the main cause of global warming, but science proves otherwise. Although humans
do cause a cooling process on the earth, it is significantly smaller, and it is not enough to balance
out the warming effect. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as cited in the NOAA
states, Earth s average surface temperature has risen by about 1.5 degrees fahrenheit since 1880
[due to human activities] (2007, p. 3). This number may seem small in perspective, but in reality,
the earth should maintain the same temperature and that is not what is happening; consequently,
earth s temperature has been rapidly changing more than it ever has before. The main reason this
number is so large is because of the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a period of
time where machines and manufacturing flourished. Although it was good for the economy, it was
deadly for the earth. This spike in machinery was ultimately the leading start of a chain of events
that lead to why global warming is at the highest it has ever been. Such a dramatic rise in
temperature in over these short years is an obvious sign that the earth is warming.

Essay about Outsourcing at Office Supply Inc. Case
INTRODUCTION
Office Supply Incorporated (OSI) is a company in crisis, with challenges in its cost structure and
poor IT performance. Outsourcing to Technology Infrastructure Solutions (TIS) is an opportunity to
both reduce costs and complexity for the firm, but first must consider whether outsourcing is a good
strategic fit for OSI. Outsourcing is known as the practice of turning over responsibility of some or
all of organizations information systems to a foreign firm in order to stay competitive. Outsourcing
is not new to the business world, as it dominated the manufacturing sector the past couple of
decades. There are various advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include lower costs, better
quality, and downsizing to focus on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides, the facilities maintenance for TIS would be less expensive because it could more
effectively manage floor space, heating and air conditioning, and power consumption, and its
facility was located in a less expensive city. Lastly, TIS had less disaster recovery and corporate
overhead costs because it had more efficient management and economies of scale.
Outsourcing would allow the OSI to focus only on its core business and would be more cost
effective for it to reduce capital infrastructure costs. Also improving employee satisfaction with
higher value addition jobs and making the best use of competitive resources available worldwide.
Using an outsourced company (TIS) would give it the same standard hardware and software
platform. And should be high speed and have a lower cost of Telecommunications.
Additional, here are a series of themes that explain most of the pressures for OSI to outsource. First
of all, managers concerns about cost and quality drive outsourcing. The same issues such as getting
existing services for a reduced price at acceptable quality standard came up repeatedly. Second,
failure to meet service standards can force management to find other ways of achieving reliability.
Finding a company in which cumulative IT management neglect eventually culminated in an out of
control situation from which the current IT

Fat is often labeled as the reason for obesity however it seems like there is sufficient proof that fat
in itself does not cause weight gain. In 1977, the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human

According to statistics, the instances of obesity started to increase around the same time fat was

war on fat led people to substitute butter and lard with processed low fat food which are high in
artificial flavoring and sugar.

Pros And Cons Of New Media
Old media like cassette tapes are becoming second tier goods since the public would like to listen
to music through social media feed or visit their favorite music site with a cup of coffee in hand.
The new media technology makes people s lives more convenient in favor of the old ways of
consuming the musictypes such as social platforms and specific applications. I spend most of my
time listening to music on my smartphone applications whereas my dad spends his time with his
old cassette tapes. In this essay, I will identify the notion of overcoming limits in both physical and
social aspects that new media give us.
Generally, Cassette tapes are a magnetic tool for recording and playback. Over the last decade,
cassette tapes still offer do it yourself musicians, who record their original music in tapes and
mail to companies. My dad loves the cassette tapes because he is a rock lover who firmly
believes that the cassette tapes have magic behind it. A lot of the music applications lack a

The Life of Abraham Essay example
God selected Abraham to be the father of the His people. The bible does not directly state why
God selected him, but after reading scripture one can conclude that God selected Abraham due to
his great faith. Abraham s life lends itself as an example to all who desire to walk with God.
EARLY LIFE
Abraham was one of three sons born to Terah in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans. Research
conducted by Elmer Towns indicates that Abraham was younger than his two brothers, Nahor and
Haran, although the bible does not specifically indicate that (56). The exact date of his birth

The bible does not indicate how long Abraham lived in Haran, but it does say that he remained
there until his father s death. At this juncture in Abraham s life, Godagain called out to him.
RESPONSE TO GOD S CALL
In reaction to God s call, Abraham departed Haran enroute to Canaan. At 75 years of age, he
abandoned his way of life assembled his wife, his nephew Lot, his servants, livestock, and
material possessions and moved in accordance with God s leading. Abraham s obedience to God
serves as an example for all believers to emulate. He left his comfort zone of living to follow God
s spoken promises even though there was definite uncertainty as to how they were going to come to
pass.
Abraham sojourned in faith as God led him on his journey through the land of Canaan. He
demonstrated a pattern of reliance on and fellowship with God during his trek by building altars at
stops along the way. Genesis 12:7 points out that God spoke to Abraham in Shechem, promising
the land to his descendants and Abraham constructed an altar. Genesis 12:8 shows that Abraham
communed with God after moving from Shechem to Bethel by erecting an altar. Abraham s
movements through Canaan appear to be at God s leading and as a result of their communion, but
God does not yet give him possession of the land. The land through which he and his family are
traveling is occupied by other inhabitants. A key point here is that while Abraham and his family

shows how much thought Microsoft put into this game. You can even fly according to the weather
patterns. You can also set the weather to practice flying in storms and blizzards.
For people looking for an added level of realism, Microsoft Flight Simulator includes a pre flight
briefing that lets you discuss the weather predictions, flight conditions and the factors that will
have an impact on the flying experience. If you want to practice for worst case scenarios, you can
pre program your plane to malfunction while flying. You will watch as your co pilot reacts to an
undercarriage that has been jammed and dropped off over Denver.

1-Bromo-3-Phenylpropane Reaction
Reaction 1 involved a primary alcohol (OH), weak leaving group in the starting material and a
reaction with a strong nucleophile (sodium bromide) and a polar protic solvent (sulfuric acid).
The reaction was carried out through reflux and the product had a relatively high yield (75%)
(Scheme 1). Scheme 1. Substitution of 3 phenyl 1 propanol to form 1 bromo 3 phenylpropane
The reaction was determined to be SN2 after careful reading of the data obtained and the
procedure followed. Increasing the amount of NaBr used in the reaction did not have an effect on
the product yield. The conditions of the reactions were acidic due to the solvent used. The acidic
conditions prevent an E2 substitution reaction from occurring. In this reaction, the OH leaving
group is replaced with the nucleophile Br. The bromine attacks the first carbon and the OH group
leaves in the same step. This is a concerted process or bimolecular substitution mechanism (SN2).
The location of the leaving group (primary) also indicates the reaction is SN2. The data obtained
from 1H NMR was found to confirm the correct product was formed. The data showed the correct
location and coupling of hydrogens in the product. There should be a difference of polarities
between the starting material and the product. The product should travel further on the TLC plate
than the starting material because the starting material should be more polar than the product. The
TLC results confirm the product was less polar than the

The Research Of Second Language Acquisition ( Sla )
INTRODUCTION
The research of second language acquisition (SLA) and its theories surged in the twentieth
century. At a first glance, the definition of SLA may seem clear, however when analysed further
it becomes clear that the subject is a bit more complex. Nevertheless, a good definition of it
could be as follows: a study of ... the way in which people learn a language other than their mother
tongue, inside or outside a classroom. (Ellis, 1997:3) From the 1940s to the 1960s, a
psycholinguistic theory known as behaviourism (stimulus response), was developed, becoming
recognised as a legitimate theory behind SLA. This was a positivist approach towards language
learning which involved the interference and transfer between a speaker s first ... Show more

By providing a theoretical framework, then going on to discuss the arguments for and against the
CA hypothesis, a conclusion on its reliability will be drawn.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
In order to fully understand the reasons for which the CA hypothesis has fallen into decline, with
questions of its reliability in being sufficient in the explanation of errors made by L2 learners, it is
necessary to examine other theories behind SLA. Firstly, as aforementioned, behaviourism (and
therewith CA) was one school of thought, popularised by B.F Skinner and John Watson. CA is
explained in Robert Lado s Linguistics Across Cultures (1957, p. 2) in which he asserts that those
elements that are similar to the [learner s] native language will be simple for him, and those areas
that are different will be difficult. By this, Lado meant that errors made in the L2 (by learners) are
due to habits which differed from the structures in their L1 and these errors would thus reflect the
L1 s structure.
However, there is another notable hypothesis which aims to explain the errors made by learners of
a second language, that being Larry Selinker s interlanguage hypothesis. According to Rod Ellis
(1997:33), this was coined in recognition of the fact that, although L2 construct a linguistic system
that does adopt part of the L1 structure, but is also differs from it and also from the target language.
This means that the

The Author Of The Declaration Of Independence By Thomas...
Thomas Jefferson was one of the best authors and Presidents in United States history. Jefferson
becoming an author impacted his life greatly. Jefferson was the main author in the Declaration of
Independence and that alone changed his life. Jefferson was also one of the best Presidents the
world had ever seen. Jefferson s work mentioned above impacted his life more than you will ever
know. Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia. Jefferson had eight kids; Martha Jefferson
Randolph, Eston Hemings, Madison Hemings, Mary Jefferson Eppes, Luig Elizabeth Jefferson,
Peter Jefferson, and Jane Jefferson. Thomas Jeffersonwas born to Martha Jefferson. He was the

Jefferson went to school and took his education very seriously. Nothing came easy for Jefferson,
he had to work for anything he wanted. Most authors were born in a very wealthy family and
had an educational background. That was not Jefferson. Jefferson was a very hard working man
no matter the situation. He was very determined man to get what he wanted, whether he dealt
with being a great president or being a great author. This kind of work ethic helped Jefferson in
every situation he was in. He was not a lazy man at all. This helped him write some of the best
books the United States has ever seen. What would you do if we didn t have The Declaration of
Independence that Jefferson was a huge part of? If we didn t have that document the United
States of America would be in a huge mess and maybe still be under British rule. That would not
be a good thing because we would not have as much freedom as we have today. Through Thomas
Jefferson s hard work and Stallings, 3
Determination America got what it wanted. Jefferson became very popular in the United States
since he was the main author of The Declaration of Independence this changed Jefferson and his
family day to day life for many years. Jefferson was one of the best Presidents the United States
has ever seen. Jefferson was already known as a great author. This helped him campaign because
he was already well known and the people

Perspectives on China
In February of 2012, as I was reviewing the information about the Darden s GEMBA program,
specifically the locations of the global residencies, it was hard for me to be excited about going
to China. It would be my sixth time visiting the country. At the time, I was hoping for a more
unique location, somewhere where I had not been, yet somewhere where, from a business
perspective it would be a valid place to go. How about Japan or South Korea, I pondered.
But no, it was China, a place that I explored on multiple occasions, and a place I learned to like. To
make things worse, the destinations cities where the most obvious: Shanghai and Beijing. What
else is out there, that I have not seen and what else I can learn from visiting it again? My ... Show

Shanghai welcomed me with a taxi driver who refused to show me his meter readout, hijacked my
cell phone until I promised to pay him the outrageous taxi fee (long story culminating in me not
paying him the outrageous fee), throwing my suitcase of his trunk and driving off with his trunk up
so I could not capture his license plate. Not a bad start, I thought maybe I learn something after all.
Tia Zi Feng was everything I expected, crowded, cobble stone streets with many tiny shops,
cafes, and art galleries. My host Jamie, who had a New Zealand souvenir store at the bottom of
the studio was very welcoming. My first night he invited me to join him and a few fellow
Westerners to a Shanghai style restaurant situated in an old local style mansion. The experience
was wonderful; and I had a chance to meet some interesting yet very different people; from a yoga
/photographer woman from Minnesota, who was just finishing her three year Asian adventure to
an English teacher from Ohio, to an software entrepreneur from Oregon. Impressively they were
all more or less fluent in Mandarin, which I greeted with envy as my one and a half years of
learning the language had been not the most fruitful to say the least.
But then it was time to go and meet the GEMBA 13. It was so exciting to see the guys again. The
schedule looked intense and I started to think, contrary to my previous assertion, that I may learn
something.

Differences Between The Help Book And Movie
The Help, Kathryn Stockett s novel and film discuss the story of African American maids working
in white Southern homes for the upper class white people during the early 1960 s in Jackson,
Mississippi. There are multiple dissimilarities between the novel, The Help and the film, The Help .
Even though the administrator managed to keep the same storyline, there still are not as many
similarities as differences in the filmand novel. To begin with, the director had kept many of the
characters appearances and personalities the same in the film as in the novel. Some disparities were
that in the novel Skeeter is hefty and tall, but the movie has her lean and average height. Hilly is
portrayed in the book as an dark haired woman, whose weight enlarged throughout the ending of
book, but in the film, she is very thin and stays that way throughout the whole film. Also in the film,
Skeeter s maid Constantine, is smaller than Skeeter although in the book it says that Constantine is
the only person who made Skeeter feel tiny and short. Lastly, Constantine s daughter in the movie
Rachel, is an African American, but in the novel, it says she may have a white daughter or even no
daughter. In the book, the Skeeter s family finds out Constantine is dead when sending a personal
check to her and her daughter sends it back saying she has passed away. In the film, Skeeter s
mother says that her brother went to go bring Constantine back, but he finds out she has passed
away. In the movie,

Hitler s Anti Semitic Ideology
To What Extent Did Hitler Grow His Anti Semitic Ideology During His Time in Vienna Adolf
Hitler known as the cruellest Anti Semitic leader in human history and the leader of Nazi German
Party, his cruelness had been proven many times through tragic and unhuman events such Jewish
Holocaust. However the time when Hitler did grow and develop his anti Semitic ideology hasn t
been made certain due to the opposing accounts and evidence in this question. On one side Hitler
himself wrote in autobiography Mein Kampf in which clearly outlined his anti Semitic
development during his time in Vienna, but considering the propaganda nature of this book the
reliability of this book needs to be questioned. On the other side, his respect of his family doctor...

(Hamann, 2015) However by examining the evidence and considering the anti Semitic social
environment in Vienna during 1910s, the accounts in Mein Kampf are reliable. Hence, to a great
extent it was very likely that Hitler became an anti Semite during his time in Vienna. Although,
there are strong indications suggest that Hitler became an anti Semite during his time in Vienna,
there is still evidence that denies Hitler s turn into an anti Semite during his time in

Narrowcasting Media Bias
In the past twenty years, the United States media has transformed from a broadcasting to a
narrowcasting media. Each method has its unique differences, with one being the amount of bias
from each source. Narrowcasting specifically, can greatly affect the media s ability to influence
public opinion. Broadcastingis media programming that focuses on many genres of television. For
instance, on a broadcasting channel, you can watch a drama, comedy, and news all in the same
day. The three broadcasting networks, known as The Big 3 , are ABC, NBC, and CBS. When
these broadcasting channels present news, they want to stay as close to the middle of the
political spectrum as possible. The goal of a broadcasting channel is to appeal to everyone and
the more neutral, fact based information released, the more views The Big 3 will get, resulting in
more money. However, narrowcasting is media programming that is focused on a particular
audience. Examples of narrowcasting networks include C SPAN, ESPN, Fox News, and CNN.
ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network so they specialize in sports
news and cater to the sports audience. Unlike broadcasting, narrowcasting will not try to appeal to
the majority of Americans, so it can lean left or right on political issues and interject slightly more
opinions.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated above, narrowcasting networks appeal to one type of audience, allowing the networks
to add opinions into their reports to keep that one audience interested. For instance, CNN, also
known as Cable News Network, is known for being more liberal whereas Fox News leans more
conservative. This creates bias because if you watch CNN news today, for example, Donald
Trump will be portrayed as an evil being. However, Fox News is known for saying Trump is an
outstanding, fantastic president. Depending on the news network you watch and/or read will affect
the opinion of President

The Discovery of Antibiotics
The discovery of antibiotics in the 20th century was a major advancement in medicine. At the
time of the discovery, war was taking place, which resulted in a plethora of infected wounds.
Antibiotics can be described as a use, laboratory effect, or an action of a chemical compound
(Clardy et al). Selman Waksman first used the term in 1941 when describing the small molecules
made by microorganisms that prevent the growth of other microorganisms (Clardy et al).
Antibiotics helped control the infection which allowed many who were injured a second chance to
live. The antibiotic that was first discovered and used to cure war infections was penicillin. Since
the discovery of antibiotics, controlling infections and diseases became easier,... Show more content

The peptidoglycan coat in bacterial cells is formed by a crystal lattice structure that forms linear
chains from a pair of alternating amino acids. The cross linking of peptidoglycan strands by the
transpeptidase enzyme forms an uneven cell wall. Antibiotics, notably penicillin, interfere with this
cross linking, which destroys the bacteria cell wall. More specifically, antibiotics work by
attaching to specific sites on the ribosome, which affects with the bacteria s function during
protein synthesis. The small or 30S ribosomal subunit has binding sites for tRNA molecules.
These sites are known as the aminoacyl (A), peptidyl (P), and exit (E) sites. The process known as
decoding oversees base pairing between the codon of mRNA and the anticodon of tRNA at the A
site, allowing the 30S subunit to distinguish between the similarities of the tRNAs (Brodersen et
al). Because most antibiotics bind to ribosomes, its main target is the rRNA, which results in most
of the binding sites being near the mRNA and the tRNA binding sites, or at sites that undergo
structural rearrangements during the processes of decoding or translocation (Dallas et al). In all,
the antibiotic prevents the bacterium from creating its cell wall, which essentially kills the
bacterium (Brodersen et al).
The appearance and spreading of antibiotic resistant pathogens have given rise to many studies
involving the genetic

Fta 215 Word Journal
In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on this week s assigned course reading. This week
we were instructed to read Chapter Four of the FTA 215 course text. This chapter covered Tools,
Maintenance, and Repair of the AR 15 platform rifle.
In the beginning of this chapter it was explained to us that Whether you are just interested in
performing maintenance on your AR 15 style rifle, or want to build one from components, you ll
need some basic tools. At this point in the game I probably wouldn t panic if I needed to work on
my AR 10... but I definitely still need platform specific tools. I can t wait to get AR specific tools
for our future build. The author then went on to explain to us that the basic list of tools that we
should have on hand to work on an AR 15 platform rifle are as follows Ball peen hammer, Nylon
/brass hammer, Bit driver screwdriver, Torx bit set, Hex bit set, Flat head bits, Phillips head bits,
Needle nose pliers, Lower receiver vise block, Upper receiver vise block set, and a Rifle bench
block... as well as a few other tools. I already have most of those things, but as stated before there
are a few things I still need to acquire.
It was nice to touch on cleaning and maintenance once again, because my safe got flooding ... Show

I m sure all the platform specific courses hit on it, but I really wish it was touched on more in the
other classes as well. In this part of the chapter the author made it clear that as a mechanical device
the Ar 15 is subject to malfunction or failure. Of course, you never want to discover a malfunction
when you are depending on your firearm. One way to prevent this is to perform a functions check
prior to taking your AR 15 with you for use. As a former military man... I can attest to the
importance of frequent functions checks. I still do them religiously because I need to know my
weapon will go bang if I need

  • 2. Starbucks’ Strategy What are some of the decision factors that Starbucks assess? Starbucks strategy for expanding its retail business is to increase its market share in existing markets and to open stores in new markets where the opportunity exists to become the leading specialty coffee retailer. In support of this strategy, the Company opened 647 new stores during the fiscal year end in September of 2001. At fiscal year end, Starbucks had 2,971 Company operated stores in 38 states, the District of Columbia and five Canadian provinces (which comprise the Company operated North American retail operations), as well as 252 stores in the United Kingdom, 25 stores in Thailand and 18 stores in Australia (which comprise the Company operated international retail ... Starbucks no smoking policy came out of its desire for nothing cologne, perfume, nor tobacco smoke to interfere with the smell of their dark roasted beans. Upon entering Asia, Starbucks stuck with its no smoking policy, which according to interviews turns out to be a welcomed policy. Even the smokers claimed not to have a problem with smoking outside. Although the Chinese dislike drinking in public, the high awareness of the brand and the Chinese market being so brand driven outweighs this habit. The Chinese consumers perceived the high prices as conveying quality and sophistication. Retailers keep this in mind as they charge more for public consumption, as customers go to Starbucks if not for the coffee, but to present themselves as modern Chinese in a public setting. China s tightly regulated business environment still throws up lots of hurdles for Starbucks. Its fragmented government and currency conversion limits make banking difficult. If I want to move money out of China, it s a hellish process, says Charles Jemley, Starbucks vice president of finance in China. Book bags and coffee mugs barely made it out of customs in time for Starbucks to pass them out at a rural teacher training session ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He said that language moved on every time and then created their own forms and never static. Every word, every grammatical element, proverbs, sounds and accents configured which was changed slowly and this was the ways how a language could long lasting. • 4. Zoos Literature Review Are the enclosures in zoos safe and beneficial for the animals? Both authors have different opinions when it comes to zoo enclosure, but Benbow focuses on how the enclosures have improved over the years, where Fraser focuses on how the improved enclosures are still not quite safe enough for the animals. This helped me to understand that although the enclosures have improved, they still need some work. In an article by S.M.P. Benbow called Zoos: Public Places to View Private Lives, she discusses how zoo enclosures have improved over time. She goes into detail about how the enclosures started as something that was supposed to be exactly like there habitat, and as time goes on it has gotten more real. Benbow also discusses the different technological advances in the enclosures, and how they are a space that represents a different place (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23). S.M.P. Benbow worked in the Department Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba, and is now the Associate Dean at the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. This particular article was part of her Peer Reviewed works. The motivation behind this work and many others is her love of the environment. This article is a peer reviewed article, so the structure and language is professional and scholarly. This article puts a lot of emphasis on zoos being developed to be like their natural habitats. The majority of the article gives detail on the development of zoos over the years. The author takes time to explain everything, and backs up all evidence with quotes and information from other sources. Benbow seems incredibly knowledgeable on Zoos and the environment. She also leaves out her opinion most of the time and give mostly facts, but she seems to think the advancements made have helped improve enclosures. This author makes the idea of zoos seem less bad by explaining how the enclosures have improved tremendously (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23). In an article written by Stephen Fraser called Safe Havens, he discusses how enclosures are still not safe enough. Fraser starts off with a story of a tiger who jumped over and attacked three men. They found out that the reason the tiger attacked was because the men were taunting the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Self Reflection Coming into a college writing course, I did not expect it to be easy. Throughout high school essays were very easy to write due to teachers cutting way too much slack and handing out easy grades. Writing has always been difficult for me, but I feel this is because I have not been challenged yet to demonstrate my full writingability. I had yet to develop my own voice as a writer. Throughout this course, I was met with many challenges to bring out the true writer inside of me and because of this, I was ultimately able to grow as a writer. The essays that I have written throughout the WRC 1013 course demonstrate that I have developed better annotation skills, communication skills and personal responsibility skills; however, I still need to improve in proofreading and learning how to receive more revisions from my peers. After going through my essays, one self reflection throughout my papers I was able to gather was my growth in developing good annotation throughout my chosen sources. For example, in my first paper Behind the Screen VS. The Real World , my annotation and gathering information from sources was very poor. This is shown in the essay where I completely stated the opposite of what Rita Dove was trying to say in her piece Loose Ends . I state that, As you can see, this is one of many reasons as to how so much screen time can have a negative influence on people which is what Rita Dove is implying in her article ( Behind the Screen Vs. • 7. Examples Of Greed In The Crucible Introduction:Greed does not rest until it is satisfied, and greed is never satisfied (Eastland). The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller shows the audience that through the aspirations and actions of Abigail Williams and Thomas Putnam, if greed is (lustier than pity) able to out power pity, there will be suffering. Abigail and Thomas use the witch trials as a type of greed to seek revenge, gain power and increase their wealth, which causes devastation and destruction in the town of Salem. Point of Comparison #1: Seek Revenge An act of retaliation for an offence is known as seeking revenge. Through the actions by Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams the readers determine that they use the witch trials to seek revenge in hope to conquer their greedy vindictive feeling, however this leads to suffering. ... When John Proctor forces Mary Warren to tell the truth about the voodoo doll and save Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail betrays her friends and goes into a state of insanity as if Mary Warren is sending the devil after her; all to keep herself safe and away from the accusations. Abigail s selfishness and greediness during the witch trials is lustier than her pity and this now allows her to use her innocence in the court as an advantage to gain power. However the southeast have seen some seismic, the latest was the 2011 magnitude 5.8 earthquake at Virginia. Scientists recently reported in a new study a likely explanation for this unexpected incident, some tiny pieces of the mantle under the region have been breaking off and moving deep down into the Earth. Seismologists image the internal part of the Earth by tracing the paths of seismic waves created by earthquakes as they move through the ground. The waves move faster through colder rocks and less quickly through warmer rocks. Rocks cool and harden as they become older, so the faster seismic waves, the older the rock. The researchers used tremors created by earthquakes a little more than 2,000 miles away to create a 3D map of the mantle. Sport And The American Dream Analysis Tennis, A Step to a Women s Athleticism Awareness Tennis is a sport that might not catch people s interest on TV, but it surely is a sport that people admire and love to play. The one reason why it might be very admirable would probably be because it is not inclusive to any race, ethnicity, or culture. If you look at the tennis players that are involved in the game, their backgrounds are not very similar to other tennis players. Unlike basketball, you would notice that it is dominated by African Americans. Despite that, one of the negative attributes of tennis is the dominance of males. Tennis is a game that is open to everyone; however, there are gender differences that affect the women players. Women don t get paid the same as men, men s finals attracts more attention and is awaited for more than women s finals, also the men tend to get more opportunities outside of tennis (commercials). After defeating Spain in Cuba and in the Philippines in 1898, the U.S. purchased the Philippines, Puerto Rico and several other islands from the Spanish. However, the Filipinos had been fighting a bloody revolution against Spain since 1896 and had no intention of becoming a colony of another imperialist power. In February of 1899, fighting broke out between the occupying American Army and the Filipino forces. The basic causes of the Philippine American Warcan be found in the U.S. government s quest for an overseas empire and the desire of the Filipino people for freedom. During the 1800s, British scientist Michael Faraday discovered the fundamentals of generating electricity. Usually, several wind towers are built together in windy places to be called wind farms. Clipart Although this method tackles the problem as we can rely less on fossil fuels, it does have some limitations in the economic factor. Wind turbines are extremely costly to develop and the cost is recovered only decades later. The cost for a commercial scale wind turbine ranges from $1.2 million to $2.6 million, per MW of nameplate capacity installed. Most of the wind turbines today are 2 MW so roughly after installation, a single wind tower could cost around $3.5 million. This is a very large amount and a very high initial cost for a company to invest in. This is one factor why countries usually select fossil fuels. (Carla, eHow) Another factor is the social factor. Wind farms are extremely noisy and spoil the view of people living near them. Wind farms affect communities a lot and force communities to relocate. This also affects the life and welfare of human beings who live near them. It causes noise pollution as well as it is an eye sore. So therefore it may be a problem for some countries to develop communities in that area and a problem for local people who live nearby. Even though she is only fourteen in Saint Marie she successfully escaped a dangerous situation with a mixture of luck and intelligence. Marie uses intuition, strength, and impulse to break free from Leopolda s grasp, while at the same time being lucky enough to be successful at escaping by fooling the other nuns. At the same time she is an anti hero because Marie put herself in that situation not because she primarily wanted to be part of that religion, but because she was trying to fit in where she felt welcomed which is caused by her naivety. When she goes back to see her years later, Leopolda is very unwell, sickly, and skinny. Leopolda lives a very stagnant life. She lives in the same room at the convent that she always has and she is in bed most of the day. In a lot of ways Marie is lucky that she didn t go down the same path as Leopolda like she wanted to initially. In comparison to Katsushika Hokusai two artworks both are woodblock prints, we see many characteristics that relate to each other in a natural environment because Katsushika Hokusai was one of the first artist to introduce landscape in his prints. Both pieces have mountains within the pictures, which is a major landmark in Japanese natural landscapes. They both have strong repeating patterns that create a sense of rhythm that helps organize the viewer s eye. Pros And Cons Of New Media Old media like cassette tapes are becoming second tier goods since the public would like to listen to music through social media feed or visit their favorite music site with a cup of coffee in hand. The new media technology makes people s lives more convenient in favor of the old ways of consuming the musictypes such as social platforms and specific applications. I spend most of my time listening to music on my smartphone applications whereas my dad spends his time with his old cassette tapes. In this essay, I will identify the notion of overcoming limits in both physical and social aspects that new media give us. Generally, Cassette tapes are a magnetic tool for recording and playback. Over the last decade, cassette tapes still offer do it yourself musicians, who record their original music in tapes and mail to companies. My dad loves the cassette tapes because he is a rock lover who firmly believes that the cassette tapes have magic behind it. A lot of the music applications lack a physical, tactile sensation and collection. However, he sees my music application, which includes all the songs in the 1980s with lyrics and easy to find such as Spotify and Apple Music. For example, one of my dad s bookshelf is full of the cassette tapes. It is hard to find a specific song or album in short time and to get tangled up with tape afterward. I just type the name of the song in the search engine, usually is a blank box at the very top. Then all the relative songs will form a list ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. The Life of Abraham Essay example God selected Abraham to be the father of the His people. The bible does not directly state why God selected him, but after reading scripture one can conclude that God selected Abraham due to his great faith. Abraham s life lends itself as an example to all who desire to walk with God. EARLY LIFE Abraham was one of three sons born to Terah in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans. Research conducted by Elmer Towns indicates that Abraham was younger than his two brothers, Nahor and Haran, although the bible does not specifically indicate that (56). The exact date of his birth cannot be determined, but it is estimated to have been between 2100 and 1800 B.C. (Davis, 159). He was born after the flood and through the family line of Shem, ten ... At this juncture in Abraham s life, Godagain called out to him. RESPONSE TO GOD S CALL In reaction to God s call, Abraham departed Haran enroute to Canaan. At 75 years of age, he abandoned his way of life assembled his wife, his nephew Lot, his servants, livestock, and material possessions and moved in accordance with God s leading. Abraham s obedience to God serves as an example for all believers to emulate. He left his comfort zone of living to follow God s spoken promises even though there was definite uncertainty as to how they were going to come to pass. Abraham sojourned in faith as God led him on his journey through the land of Canaan. He demonstrated a pattern of reliance on and fellowship with God during his trek by building altars at stops along the way. Genesis 12:7 points out that God spoke to Abraham in Shechem, promising the land to his descendants and Abraham constructed an altar. Genesis 12:8 shows that Abraham communed with God after moving from Shechem to Bethel by erecting an altar. Abraham s movements through Canaan appear to be at God s leading and as a result of their communion, but God does not yet give him possession of the land. The land through which he and his family are traveling is occupied by other inhabitants. A key point here is that while Abraham and his family are traveling as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. 1-Bromo-3-Phenylpropane Reaction Reaction 1 involved a primary alcohol (OH), weak leaving group in the starting material and a reaction with a strong nucleophile (sodium bromide) and a polar protic solvent (sulfuric acid). The reaction was carried out through reflux and the product had a relatively high yield (75%) (Scheme 1). Scheme 1. Substitution of 3 phenyl 1 propanol to form 1 bromo 3 phenylpropane The reaction was determined to be SN2 after careful reading of the data obtained and the procedure followed. Increasing the amount of NaBr used in the reaction did not have an effect on the product yield. The conditions of the reactions were acidic due to the solvent used. The acidic conditions prevent an E2 substitution reaction from occurring. In this reaction, the OH leaving group is replaced with the nucleophile Br. The bromine attacks the first carbon and the OH group leaves in the same step. This is a concerted process or bimolecular substitution mechanism (SN2). The location of the leaving group (primary) also indicates the reaction is SN2. The data obtained from 1H NMR was found to confirm the correct product was formed. The data showed the correct location and coupling of hydrogens in the product. There should be a difference of polarities between the starting material and the product. The product should travel further on the TLC plate than the starting material because the starting material should be more polar than the product. The TLC results confirm the product was less polar than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At a first glance, the definition of SLA may seem clear, however when analysed further it becomes clear that the subject is a bit more complex. Nevertheless, a good definition of it could be as follows: a study of ... the way in which people learn a language other than their mother tongue, inside or outside a classroom. (Ellis, 1997:3) From the 1940s to the 1960s, a psycholinguistic theory known as behaviourism (stimulus response), was developed, becoming recognised as a legitimate theory behind SLA. This was a positivist approach towards language learning which involved the interference and transfer between a speaker s first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By providing a theoretical framework, then going on to discuss the arguments for and against the CA hypothesis, a conclusion on its reliability will be drawn. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK In order to fully understand the reasons for which the CA hypothesis has fallen into decline, with questions of its reliability in being sufficient in the explanation of errors made by L2 learners, it is necessary to examine other theories behind SLA. Firstly, as aforementioned, behaviourism (and therewith CA) was one school of thought, popularised by B.F Skinner and John Watson. CA is explained in Robert Lado s Linguistics Across Cultures (1957, p. 2) in which he asserts that those elements that are similar to the [learner s] native language will be simple for him, and those areas that are different will be difficult. By this, Lado meant that errors made in the L2 (by learners) are due to habits which differed from the structures in their L1 and these errors would thus reflect the L1 s structure. However, there is another notable hypothesis which aims to explain the errors made by learners of a second language, that being Larry Selinker s interlanguage hypothesis. According to Rod Ellis (1997:33), this was coined in recognition of the fact that, although L2 construct a linguistic system that does adopt part of the L1 structure, but is also differs from it and also from the target language. This means that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are multiple dissimilarities between the novel, The Help and the film, The Help . Even though the administrator managed to keep the same storyline, there still are not as many similarities as differences in the filmand novel. To begin with, the director had kept many of the characters appearances and personalities the same in the film as in the novel. Some disparities were that in the novel Skeeter is hefty and tall, but the movie has her lean and average height. Hilly is portrayed in the book as an dark haired woman, whose weight enlarged throughout the ending of book, but in the film, she is very thin and stays that way throughout the whole film. • 46. Narrowcasting Media Bias In the past twenty years, the United States media has transformed from a broadcasting to a narrowcasting media. Each method has its unique differences, with one being the amount of bias from each source. Narrowcasting specifically, can greatly affect the media s ability to influence public opinion. Broadcastingis media programming that focuses on many genres of television. For instance, on a broadcasting channel, you can watch a drama, comedy, and news all in the same day. The three broadcasting networks, known as The Big 3 , are ABC, NBC, and CBS. When these broadcasting channels present news, they want to stay as close to the middle of the political spectrum as possible. The goal of a broadcasting channel is to appeal to everyone and the more neutral, fact based information released, the more views The Big 3 will get, resulting in more money. However, narrowcasting is media programming that is focused on a particular audience. Examples of narrowcasting networks include C SPAN, ESPN, Fox News, and CNN. ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network so they specialize in sports news and cater to the sports audience. Unlike broadcasting, narrowcasting will not try to appeal to the majority of Americans, so it can lean left or right on political issues and interject slightly more opinions.... At the time of the discovery, war was taking place, which resulted in a plethora of infected wounds. Antibiotics can be described as a use, laboratory effect, or an action of a chemical compound (Clardy et al). Selman Waksman first used the term in 1941 when describing the small molecules made by microorganisms that prevent the growth of other microorganisms (Clardy et al). Antibiotics helped control the infection which allowed many who were injured a second chance to live. The antibiotic that was first discovered and used to cure war infections was penicillin. The peptidoglycan coat in bacterial cells is formed by a crystal lattice structure that forms linear chains from a pair of alternating amino acids. The cross linking of peptidoglycan strands by the transpeptidase enzyme forms an uneven cell wall. Antibiotics, notably penicillin, interfere with this cross linking, which destroys the bacteria cell wall. More specifically, antibiotics work by attaching to specific sites on the ribosome, which affects with the bacteria s function during protein synthesis. The small or 30S ribosomal subunit has binding sites for tRNA molecules. These sites are known as the aminoacyl (A), peptidyl (P), and exit (E) sites. The process known as decoding oversees base pairing between the codon of mRNA and the anticodon of tRNA at the A site, allowing the 30S subunit to distinguish between the similarities of the tRNAs (Brodersen et al). Because most antibiotics bind to ribosomes, its main target is the rRNA, which results in most of the binding sites being near the mRNA and the tRNA binding sites, or at sites that undergo structural rearrangements during the processes of decoding or translocation (Dallas et al). In all, the antibiotic prevents the bacterium from creating its cell wall, which essentially kills the bacterium (Brodersen et al). The appearance and spreading of antibiotic resistant pathogens have given rise to many studies involving the genetic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
