A Slave Girl
This profoundly moving, first hand account of Slavery during the 19th century, gives the reader
invaluable and in depth insight into the horrifying treatment of African Americans slaves and
completely unveils the true ugliness that will permanently mark the country s beginnings. Written
by Harriet Jacobs under the pseudonym Linda Brent, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl depicts
how it was to grow up somebody else s property as a female slave, as well as, her grueling fight to
liberate herself and her children.
The average life of a slave could depend significantly upon whose possession they were in. Certain
slave owners, though few, were considerably more compassionate and humane in their treatment of
their slaves such as her dead mother s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The North did not particularly care about the injustices or cruelties associated with the institution of
slavery in the states it was already established in. They did greatly care about it spreading to new
western states though, as it would in turn strengthen the South s overall power. If allowed to
expand, slavery would threaten the livelihood of the average white American. The South in turn
feared that Abraham Lincoln, a member of the National Union party, getting elected meant that no
new state would be allowed to become slave states. As a result, the South s power in congress
would slip, which would allow abolitionists to come in and abolish slavery completely. Even with
a whole war that had slavery at its core, the real issue of slavery was its effects on White
Americans not the

Greatest Achievements Of The Mayans
The Maya, a civilization lost in time, is still remembered through their advancements. The Maya
roamed MesoAmerica (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras) from 2600BC 900AD. The
Mayans lived a simple, polytheistic life and in their spare time, enjoyed playing pok a tok, a typical
Mayan ball game. Yet, the Mayans are remembered through their achievements, but what is their
greatest achievement? The achievements together are all significant, large in scale, genius, cutting
edge, brilliant, and have large amounts of physical or mental effort. In spite of that four stand out:
the trade network, the architecture, the calendars, and the number system. In between, all of the
outstanding achievements, the number system can capture the award for the

The Influence Of Public Policy In The United States
Public Policy is the way that our Executive branch of government help maintain the order of the
country as well as the needs of its citizens. Of course, no one system can be individually perfect
and solve all issues. But the public policies in the United States have been molded on off racial
prejudices in the past, and off legacy racism in the present. Discrimination that affects the racial
dynamic of most urban cities in the nation. In this course we have discussed the necessity for public
policyand the ways in which it affects this nation. Public Policy our governmentand the citizens that
have an impact through voting help shape the economic and social system for the United States. To
go more into depth, that means that education, employment, housing, health(care), our
communities, and the criminal justice system are all impacted by the decisions made by our
government.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Public policy has influenced philanthropists to do some of the beneficial deeds they have done
over the years. That will not only benefit themselves, but also select communities and groups of
people. On the other hand, public policy has also helped with the creation of laws that do not
necessarily benefit the people . Laws and bills passed such as the Bill of Rights or the Fair
Housing Act of 1968. Although there are actions being executed by the government, sometimes
they are not as beneficial as they were intended to be. Regular citizens as well as executives of
the law can sometimes find ways to misuse or bypass the intentions of the law for their own
personal purposes. One thing I have learned is that racism, inequality, and inequity play a role in
how the laws that were created, are

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Biological Model and...
Developmental theories embody perspectives about environmental forces and human essence that
build a path of human development. Developmental psychopathology theories embody these
perspectives as well, and the information from normal and pathological human life courses
enlighten current models of development (Davies Bhugra, 2004). Thus, for instance, the healthy
child and the biological model both agree that certain predetermined behavioural pattern may be
impervious to environmental forces. Similarly, knowledge about relapse to previous patterns of
behaviour necessitates the re evaluation of the idea that every process of development is a change
and; that every previous pattern of behaviour is transformed into entirely new one... Show more

The biological model distinguishes several of the studies in the genetics of psychological disorder
(Joseph, 2006). At this point, environmental factors, or the interface between them and the genes,
serve hardly any function in the possible result. For instance, Kallman s (1946 as cited in Joseph,
2006, 237) study on the genetic aspect of schizophrenia reinforces the application of the biological
model, just like the presence or absence of specific substances on depression (ibid, p. 237). In all
of these instances, the presence of specific attributes is presumed likely to influence a specific form
of pathology.
Even though the biological model is remarkable in its straightforwardness, it still has several
limitations; for instance, not every individual who has a genetic indicator at a specific point in time
is expected to display consequent psychopathology or a similar form of psychopathology (Miller
Mason, 2002). For example the case that every child of schizophrenic parents does not develop
schizophrenia, or that not every monozygotic twin exhibits similarity in relation to schizophrenia
indicates that other factors have to be taken into account. It is vital to emphasise that the failure to
come across a significant prevalence of schizophrenic children of schizophrenic parents suggest that
factors such as immunity, coping approaches, and invulnerability to stress, are protective factors

A Study On Common Cancer Treatments Essay
BACKGROUND Common cancer treatments such as anthracyclines and trastuzumab are
associated with an increased risk of cardiotoxicity, which is responsible for significant mortality and
morbidity in cancer survivors.[1, 2] Assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) has
been, and continues to be the most widely used method for cardiotoxicity risk assessment prior to,
surveillance during, and surveillance after administration of potentially cardiotoxic cancer
treatment.[3] Since the 1970s,[4] multiple gated acquisition scanning (MUGA) has been the
preferred imaging modality for baseline and serial assessment of LVEF for cardiotoxicity. There is
concern that contemporary gamma cameras may not allow optimal patient positioning for LVEF
assessments.[3] Thus, it is possible that contemporary MUGA in cancer patients may not provide
accurate estimates of LVEFs. Inaccurate LVEF assessment may carry significant implications for
the care of cancer patients receiving potentially cardiotoxic treatment since LVEFs play an
important role in decisions to start, continue, hold or stop such treatment. The objective of this
study was to compare the accuracy of LVEFs obtained by contemporary clinical MUGA in
consecutive patients with cancer with reference LVEFs from cardiovascular magnetic resonance
imaging (CMR), the gold standard technique for assessment of left ventricular volumes and systolic
function.[5] METHODS Patients and data collection The study sample consisted of

Christian Worldview And The Secular Worldview Of Account
To compare the Christian worldview to the secular worldview of account, one must understand
the definition of what a worldview is and what a Christian worldview looks like as well as what
a secular worldview looks. According to Valk (2012), Worldviews are those larger pictures that
inform and in turn form our perceptions of reality. They are visions of life as well as ways of
life, are individual and personal, yet bind adherents together communally (p. 1). It is not
uncommon for individuals to have different worldviews because the meaning of the word is a set
of beliefs one uses to understand the world. All people grow up viewing the world differently
because to the different things they experience in their lives. A worldview defines the... Show more

Here the only thing that matters is a man. Within secular philosophy individuals only trust the
scientific method to know anything. So basically, if something can t be observed, tested, or
experimented, then it does not exist. This is why there is no room for spirituality because it can
t be tested, so that means it does not exist. Secular ethics are based on what humans decide as far
as standards and values. Humans depend on science, reason, and a historical experience to figure
out what is right and what is wrong. It s tricky because standards will not be the same for
everyone because everyone has a different background and reason. There are different views within
secular science, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history which are all based on
man and mans perspective. Overall secular humanist view everything from the standpoint of what
is seen and what can be known the senses. Hitchcock (1994) stated the following: The ultimate
failure of Secular Humanism is in the fact that of its very nature is promises what it cannot fulfill.
By encouraging people to put their trust in earthly happiness, it programs them for disillusionment.
This is in no small measure the reason why the history of the modern world has been characterized,
intellectually, by philosophies of pessimism like Existentialism and by often rancorous bitterness
over various plans for worldly improvement. In the twentieth century, mass slaughter has been

The Diverse Roles of Women in Movies Essay
The Diverse Roles of Women in Movies
In society we have a lot of women actresses. Some tend to play the motherly type, some play the
manipulator type and some even play the victims of abusive relationships. No matter what women
seem to be coming up in the industry of movies in more ways than before. The three movies I have
chosen to analyze in my critique are Heartbreakers, Baby Boy and Stepmom. These three movies
all have women in them that either play a major role or the main role. All their roles are very
different in character and none of the women in these three movies play a similar role.
In the movie Heartbreakers the two main women are Jennifer Love Hewitt (the daughter) and
Sigourney Weaver (the mother). These two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second movie in which a woman plays a major role in is Baby Boy. This movie, I believe
did not do too much damage to the box offices when it first came out, but it sure portrayed
women in a very negative way. The main character is actually a man by the name of Tyrese
Gibson. He plays a boy who is struggling to grow up and become not only an independent adult,
but also a responsible father (to more than one child). The main female role in the movie is
Tyrese s baby s mother. She is in love with him and would do anything to keep him happy. She let
s him use her car and she let s him stay at her place at any time with her and their son. He cheats
on her a lot and at one point even hits her. This was a major part in the movie. He had promised
her he would never lay his hands on her and he did. She stopped talking to him for quite some
time, and that whole time you could sense they were both miserable without eachother. Some men
tend to hurt women for the simple facts that they just don t know how to control their anger or
because they were never taught good communication skills. They end up telling one another that
they can t live without each other and they get back together. She ends up getting pregnant by him
again and they get married and live happily ever after. Moral of the story: Teens trying to balance

Mozart, Also Known As Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart, also known as Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian composer
who was recognized as one of the greatest composers of the Western Hemisphere. Mozart was
considered equal to Haydn and beethoven for he improved upon the Viennese Musical School.
Some of the things that made Mozart different from other composers was that he wrote and
practiced all genres of music, and was quite skilled at it as well. He also had a great amount of
skill in his every one of the genres he has practiced. There are many factors that have influenced
his music. For example, his childlike personality and other factors such as his life experiences,
caused by his father, which are the primarily causes of the nature of his music. Mozart was... Show

In addition to uttered vulgar platitudes, 34 Mozart s frequent facial grimaces, inadvertent repetitive
movements of hands and feet, and jumping, 43,44 have been regarded by some as phonic and
motor tics and used to support the diagnosis of TS, for example: Mozart s sister‐in‐law,
wrote in one of her letters that he often used to touch his napkin to his lips, make grimaces, tap
his hands or feet on objects, or play with hats, pockets, tables and chairs seemingly playing
clavier, and so this shows how some of his actions were very much impulsive much like a child.
Mozart also used to write letters to his family members, especially his sister and wife.
The content of the letters that he used to send was different from other things that he used to
send to family members and other loved ones, for example: Milan, Oct. 5, 1771: I AM in good
health, but always sleepy. Papa has snatched from my pen all that I had to write about, which is,
that he has already written everything. Signora Gabrielli is here, and we are soon going to see her,
as we wish to become acquainted with all distinguished singers.
His use of words such as Papa shows the childish aspect of his personality. Children tend to change
action quickly and act in different ways, they live in their heads most of the time and enjoy life to
the fullest, Mozart also acted

go through. The first stage is known as the sensorimotor stage; it is from birth to about two years
of age. The sensorimotor stage is a period that the cognitive development rapidly grows and
during this time frame the infant develops an understanding of the world through trial and error
using their senses and actions (McLeod, 2015). An example of an experience that Bilal went

Similarities Between Hinduism And Buddhism
Learning about both Hinduism and Buddhism, particularly about the art and architecture of both
cultures made me realize they are not that different as I thought first. Both cultures are beautiful
and rich, and if someone takes a deeper look can see that they are depending on each other.
Many people forget that Buddha was born into a Hindu society, and his views and beliefs which
led to a brand new culture are based on Hinduism. Of course I am not saying the two are the same
because that wouldn t make any sense. However, the similarities are visible, just the way
differences are visible too, and these things make both cultures so amazing. First I would like to
point out some of the similarities and differences between Hindu and Buddhist faiths which I think
are important to understand their art. Both religions put karma and reincarnation into the center of
believes. Both religions believe in several spiritual practices in attempts to get beyond the thinking
mind and into a state of relaxation and awareness. However, they do not share their gods, in
Hinduism they share their religion with many gods and goddesses, and in Buddhismthere is no god,
Buddha himself was a leader. Knowing the two cultures basic views and believes it is easier to
compare their art and architecture, since mostly they are based on the religions.
The first similarity which I think is very oblivious is the stupa. Stupas are present in both cultures
and the base for the temples in Hinduism and Buddhism

Rocket Boys Character Analysis
During the 1950s, the American family structure was strongly patriarchal in which the man of
the house went to work to provide for his family, his wife stayed at home to take care of the
house and kids, and the kids were expected to go to school and be very well disciplined and
respectable. Even in the coal towns of Central Appalachia this familyorientation was prevalent, as
such the children of the miners were set too standards that would carry this structure on for many
decades. When a child finds that they do not meet the expectations that are levied upon him/her
by their parents and the rest of the community their life is made difficult as they struggle to find
who they truly are and still try to live up to what others expect. This is exactly the case that
Homer Sonny Hickam Jr. finds himself in. Through his memoir, Rocket Boys, Homer Hickam
retells the story of his youth as a boy struggling through life trying to become who he wants to be
while his father tries to push him to be who he is expected to be.
In the small coal towns of West Virginia, the youth was expected to primarily do one of two
things. Which one you were expected of depended upon your gender, if you were male you were
expected to graduate high school, maybe, and then go into the mines to dig coal like your father
and his father before him. If you were female you were expected to graduate high school and then
marry a miner and raise his kids and care for his house just like your mother and her mother before
her. For Sonny though we know from the very first page that his parents had opposing ideas of
what was expected of him as he writes, I didn t know that my hometown was at war with itself
over its children and that my parents were locked in a kind of bloodless combat over how my
brother and I would live our lives (Hickam 1). Just a few pages later it is discovered that his mother
wanted Sonny to pursue something other than mining and exactly what boys of Coalwood were
expected to do; Almost all of the grown up boys I knew had either joined the military services or
gone to work in the mine. I had no idea what the future held in store for me. The only thing I knew
for sure was my mother did not see me going into the mine (Hickam

The Effect Of The Slat System Essay
In order to gauge any effects the slat system, with various weights, may have on the shock wave,
several baseline tests were run. These tests did not have the device installed in order to record
and understand the basic performance of a shock wave coming straight from the shock tube. To
record the pressure profile of the wave within the expansion section, GageScope was used. A
trigger was set to detect a rapid rise in voltage from the pressure transducer, and the program
would record 1ms before and 10ms after the trigger. The initial baseline test can be seen in Figure X
below. For a greater focus on the effects of the device on the shock wave, all charts for comparison
has been narrowed to 2ms after the trigger. The two significant runs showing the pressure profile of
the shock wave are shown in Figures X Y.
Figure x: Baseline Test 1 Full Recording
Figure x: Baseline Test 1 2ms Recording
Figure x: Baseline Test 2
These figures show that the pressure rises from atmospheric (0mV) to peak pressure in a rise
time of around 0.000039 seconds, or 39 Вµs. This is representative of a shock wave due to a
nearly instantaneous rise time. Baseline test 1 burst at 51 psi while baseline test 2 burst at 53 psi.
The initial design did not perform effectively at achieving its intended functions when installed and
tested with the shock tube. Upon firing the shock tube, the slats would not rotate. Several firings
were attempted, all resulting in no rotation of the rods. The

ABCDE Model Analysis
Learned optimism is the idea that a positive emotional state of mind can be cultivated, by constantly
challenging negative thoughts. A theorem based on cognitive behavioral thinking CBT , the
ABCDE model provides the basis for this discussion. The ABCDE model is essential as it provides
immediate benefits in regards to building optimismby recognising and disputing negative thoughts.
This process allows people to recognize how you can think about situations, allowing them to create

tool. The students selected to undertake the program demonstrated greater optimism and less
depressive symptoms contrasted to the students who were not exposed to the ABC method. This
clearly supports the effectiveness for the ABC and the ABCDE model. Furthermore, Cunningham
(2002) completed a similar program examining the effectiveness of a universal school based

Americanization of the Canadian Economy
Since the country s conception in 1867, Canada has lived in the shadow of it s southerly neighbour,
the United States of America. Through the years, what started out as a country with very distinct
culture has morphed and become Americanized. Historically speaking, American influence has had
a great economical impact on Canada. Speaking about the Americanization of Canada, Pierre

Finance is the way in which money is used and handled; especially, the way in which large amounts
of money are used and handled by governments and companies (Merriam Webster, 2014). Financial
Management is the planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling of the monetary
resources of an organization (Businessdictionary, 2014). The major sub areas of financeare:

An advantage are corporate shareholders cannot lose more money than they originally paid for
their share of stock. A disadvantage to being a corporationis that corporations are double taxed.
Federal and state government tax corporate income once at the corporate level, and then the
shareholders pay taxes again at the personal level. Hybrid Organizations promotes the growth of
small businesses. An advantage is that they offer single taxation and limited liability to all
owners. A disadvantage is that the owners bear personal liability for the firm s debt (Cornett,
Adair, amp; Nofsinger, 2014). 3. Define the terms agency relationship and agency problem, and
list the three approaches to minimize the conflict of interest resulting from the agency problem.
Whenever one party hires someone else to work for him or her that is an agency relationship. An
agency problem is when the manager that is hired by the firm to operate the firm spend company
money to improve their own lifestyle instead of earning more profits for shareholders (Cornett,
Adair, amp; Nofsinger, 2014). The first approach is to ignore it, of the amount of money involved
is small enough relative to the firm s cash flow. The second approach is to monitor the manager s
actions. The final approach is to make the manager an owner. Making the manager an equity stake
in the firm. 4. Why is ethical behavior so important in the field of finance (Cornett, Adair, amp;

The Terrace At Vernon
The three different types of color presented in various works in chapter 6 were local, perceptual,
and arbitrary. Local color is the easiest to understand as it is the typical color of items that we see
when pictured in our head. According to Sayre, it is the color we know an object to be, the way
we know a banana is yellow. (Sayre, 126) A good artist s example is Jane Hammond s Fallen, which
exhibits a stereotypical fall scene with a twist. Perceptual coloris the way it is see from the eye,
which depends on lighting factors. Monet is a good example of an impressionist painter who
tried to paint exactly what his eyes were seeing rather than what the color was supposed to be.
The last concept is arbitrary color, which is a more expressive take on color, and usually replaces
local colors with other ones that are out of the ordinary but yet fit within the painting, Pierre
Bonnard s The Terrace at Vernon is a good example of this expressive

Color in this piece is used in a warming way. It is considered local because when we think of fall
we think of leaves on the ground and in all of these color variations. What this work is really
showing is somewhat of a healing aspiration since each leaf is sewn on with a fallen soldiers
name from Iraq. As noted in the book, there is no actual brown leaves, but the vast warm color
spectrum makes it appear that there are in fact brow leaves. Without color this would not be as
effective. The color for me makes it seem as if each solider matters. Asides from the color
individuality this work presents, it does all bring everyone together in one place, as the leaves
are grouped together so these soldiers can be together as collective fallen group. Color is also
helping inforce the representational theme of this work since without the typical fall colors this

Kinship is the cornerstone for how people within a society relate to others and race lineages. Many
societies trace their lineage through the father, which is called patrilineal, or through the mother
which is called matrilineal. The Iroquois nation traced their kinship through the matrilineal decent
lines. Kinship directly relates to how family groups think, act and live along side each other. The
culture of the Iroquois can also be compared to how many American families relate to one another
as well.

Often times there are couples that get married but have chosen not to stay with one another because
of a difference in opinion, this is called divorce.
Iroquois and divorce Often time s couples marry only to find out that they have a difference of
opinion or one spouse has caused serious marital strain on the other. Since the Iroquois couples
lived matrilineally, this makes it easier for the woman to dissolve the marriage, keep her children
and continue to live at home with her family. If a woman no longer desired to be married to her
husband, all she had to do was pack up her husband s belongings and leave them on the steps of
the longhouse. When he came home, the husband would find them, realize his wife had terminated
the marriage, and return to his home village and his own patrilineage. (Nowak, B. amp; Laird, P.

Americans and divorce Americans divorce for the same reasons the Iroquois divorced for
however, in the American culture it is harder to divorce. Many times couples divorce because of
infidelity of one or both of the spouses, or from irreconcilable differences. In order to obtain a
divorce in America many states require the couple to attend counseling to see if they can fix their
marriage. Sometimes this is successful and the couple will stay together and often times it is not
possible for the couple to stay together so they will then obtain a divorce

African American Criminalization Analysis
In this class we have learned about mass incarceration and the criminalization of black and brown
bodies throughout U.S. history. An early example of the criminalization of brown bodies can be
seen in Los Angeles when the Spanish Crown came and deemed Native Americans as lawless and
ungovernable. Then, later in time, we see the criminalization of black bodies in the South during
the Reconstruction Era. Laws and ideology that are motivated by colonialism and settler
colonialism, have helped put more black and brown bodies in prison and exploit them for labor
through convict lease systems. The criminalization of Native Americans, Hobos, and African
Americans served a political, social and economic purpose which helped colonialism and settler...

Hobo did not want to conform to settler colonialism, in attempting to permanently reside in Native
land, which led to them being outcasts in society. African Americans were ignored and attacked for
trying to integrate in society. It is evident that colonialism has played in the social construction of
race as well as a racialized global hierarchy and a system of punishment that criminalizes difference
(Bosworth/Flavin 13). It is evident that these populations were criminalized because they were
different and did not follow or assimilate to European culture. Incarcerating these two populations,
gave Anglo Saxons free and cheap labor in the construction of Los Angeles and many construction
projects in the South. This was useful to colonialism because Anglo Saxons and Spaniards could

Japanese Economic Development Post World War Ii
World War II left many powerful nations in smoke and rubble. The deconstruction of many
countries gave them the chance to rebuild their cities and economies. No country took more
advantage of this opportunity than Japan. Japan was a huge militaristic power in World War II .
Their aggressive behavior caused them to be stripped of their military and their power for self rule.
The demilitarization of Japan changed the country s focus from world militaristic domination to
world economic domination. The country established free trade, manufactured goods, and
improved and invented technology, making themselves one of the largest economic superpowers
in the world. World War II exploded across Europe and the rest of the world in 1939.

rid of everything that symbolized World War II Japan. He did this through demobilizing the

Examples Of Allegory In The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz: A Timeless Allegory The Wizard of Oz has stood the test of time as a
canonized work of American fiction. Originally released as a children s novel in 1900 titled The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it has since been adapted into countless film incarnations, the most
famous of these being the 1939 film starring Judy Garland, and has spawned several musicals and
plays. One question that many scholars ask when discussing The Wizard of Ozis how it remains
such a prominent piece of American literature over a century after the story first debuted. The
answer to this question seems simple after exploring the themes that are displayed throughout the
novel and the film: The Wizard of Oz continues to endure the test of time by offering a timeless
allegory for nearly everything. Although this essay will focus on the allegory that the 1939 film
offered Americans for the impending World War and the leaders and events current to that time,
there are countless applications of the story that others may draw on. As Steven Hamelman states in

of the sea, both travel and traffic by water have always been easier and cheaper than by land.
This advantage of carriage by water was marked two hundred years ago when roads were few and

Love is one of the most powerful forces in the world, and one of the most difficult to describe. It
is one of those emotions that words do not seem to justify a person may feel it, but may not be
able to explain it. However, that does not mean that people do not know that love is out there.
Many people believe that everyone has one true love somewhere in the world, and spend their lives
searching for that person. Love is not difficult to find though. It exists in many forms, including
love between family members, friends, different races, and even the love for oneself, both in the
novel Fried GreenTomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Frannie Flagg and in one s own life. The
first and most basic form of love is found in the family.

Impact Of Globalization On The Global Economy
Over the last number of years, it could be said that the growth in the global economy has increased
a vast amount and is rapidly continuing in this direction. The world as we know it is now
becoming progressively more connected through a process called Globalisation. Grossman and
Helpman (1993) say that there are two main trends too which are key contributors that help make
up this process of globalisation. The first of these being the advancement in technology innovations
and secondly following this the idea that nations in the world are becoming more open, however
also more independent. To continue from this, a third trend suggested by Bates (2010) is now a
recognition that educationat all levels is now a global service industry. In addition to this, Jeffery S
(2002) implies that Globalisation s extensive definition could be a disguised title to a great deal of
underlying issues and therefore could be a buzzword that is being frequently used to describe
current world situations to do with trade lines between countries, a freer movement of capital goods
and services and a general more all round greater dependence on the global economy including
education. Burbules and Torres (2000) suggest that the change in dynamics through globalisation
would therefore have a further cause for concern on people involved in the educational endeavour.

In a few cases, a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely before reaching
another body of water. Small rivers may also be termed by several other names, including
stream, creek and brook. In the United States a river is generally classified as a watercourse
more than 60 feet (18 metres) wide. The water in a river is usually in a channel, made up of
astream bed between banks. In larger rivers there is also a wider floodplain shaped by flood
waters over topping the channel. Flood plains may be very wide in relation to the size of the river
channel. Rivers are a part of the hydrological cycle. Water within a river is generally collected from
precipitation through surface runoff, groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of water stored
inglaciers and snowpacks.
Streams
A stream is a flowing body of water with a current, confined within a bed and stream banks.
Streams play an important corridor role in connecting fragmented habitats and thus in conserving

Essay about Oscar Wilde s An Ideal Husband
Oscar Wilde s An Ideal Husband
Oscar Wilde (1845 1903) lived an outrageous and controversial life which was well publicized and
condemned, as his life defied the strict social mores of the time. He was put into this public
position due to the success of his plays which challenged Victorian earnestness while being
hilariously funny. His plays, in particular An Ideal Husband, 1895 portray Victorian society as
viciously hypocritical at it s worst and laughably pretentious at it s best. Wilde expressed this point
of view in An Ideal Husband through the rich use of plot development, construction of characters,
dramatic irony, hyperbole, witty and epigrammatic repartee and satire.

The audience assumes that people in the real world as lucky and benevolent as this are so
becuase they worked hard and are earnest. By creating a character like this who took the easy
money and built a marriage and friendships around lies, wilde has challenged the earnestness of
the many victorian people because there were many poeple in a social position like robert s who
may have done a similar thing to get there.
In An Ideal Husband Wilde presents a view (the least flattering view presented in the play)that
victorian society is viciously hypocritical. This is acheived through the characterisation of Lady

Crime Scene Investigation Essay
What is CSI and what is involved? Crime scene investigation. Now if a person watches TV shows
about this topic, they should know that some things are not in fact how investigators solve crimes
in real life situations. There are several different ways to find out the truth about what happens
during crimes. Here are just a few of them. First are fingerprints. Everyone has a set of fingerprints
that are unique only to them. There are no two sets the same. Even identical twins have completely
different prints. Fingerprints have 3 classes: Loops, Whorls, and Arches. Fingerprints could exist on
various surfaces ranging from easy to pull to almost impossible. The ridges on fingertips hold

There are three kinds of sciences to look at: Pure, Applied, and Junk. Pure science defined as;
systematic observation of natural phenomena solely for the discovery of unknown laws relating to
facts; the study of science alone, not including its relations to other subjects (dicionary.com,
2018). This science looks at facts that one derives from mathematics and logic; the natural
science. The second is Applied science. Applied science is: the discipline dealing with the art or
science of applying scientific knowledge to practical problems; he had trouble deciding which
branch of engineering to study (Farlex, 2018). This science deals with facts from machines,
inventions, and technology. The third is junk science. Junk science is: faulty scientific information
or research, especially when used to advance special interests (dictionary.com, 2018). Once a
person decides to use the sciences to figure out fact or fiction one uses the scientific method to find
the facts. The steps one follows for this process include: Observation, hypothesis, experiment,
conclusion. If one does not find the truth the first time, they go back and repeat these steps. They
keep repeating them until they reach the truth, or all leads are exhausted. Here is a chart to follow
when using the scientific method. (Science Buddies,

Ineffective Supervisors
Effective and Ineffective Supervisors I have worked with several supervisors who are effective and
ineffective, throughout my journey of employment. There are three categories where ineffective
supervisors fall short, which are organizational/administrational, technological/cognitive, and
relational/affective (Wilcoxon, Norem, Magnuson, 2005). Three major character flaws an
ineffective counselor consumes are uncaring, arrogance, and chastising employees in public. I have
experienced all of these awful characteristics in supervisors throughout the years. Ineffective
supervisors make employees feel worthless, unfitting, and unqualified. Effective supervisors on the
other hand, carry several noble characteristics, such as supportive, communicative,

Similarities Between Dreamland And The Giver
Did you know that characters from different books can have many things in common? Caitlin O
Koren s best friend, Rina Swain, is a go getting, playful, beautiful girl. Asher, Jonas s closest pal,
is a goofy, trouble making boy. Rina Swain from Dreamland and Asher from The Giver have
similarities and differences. Rina Swain and Asher are outgoing, fun loving friends that have
much in common. For example, Cheerleading is a sport, Rina said firmly. And besides, you get
to go to all the good parties (Dessen, 28). Rina always has a spring in her step, and looks for fun
and excitement. Like Rina, Asher s always funny and joyous. In addition, Jonas had casually
picked up an apple... and thrown it to his friend. Asher had thrown it back, and they had begun a
simple game of catch (Lowry, 22 and 23). Asher wants to play games, have fun, and hang out with

Making An Initial Visit After Receiving A Referral Within...
Summary The aim of this session was to introduce us to the process of making an initial visit
after receiving a referral within the role of a social worker. This was done with a small group
exercise involving role play. We were placed into groups of four and once in our groups we had
to divide ourselves into roles. There were three roles consisting of Service user, Social worker
and observer. We were then taken to one side with people from other groups whom had be given
the same role as ourselves and briefed on what it was we had to do. I was given the role of social
worker, therefore i was told that I had to plan and undertake an initial visit and given the receipt
of a referral. The referral consisted of concerns regarding a young boy, Max aged 2. The referral
was made by the child s nursery. They had concerns about his behavior and presentation, for
example, Max is often very tired, wears the same clothes for a number of consecutive days, is
greedy when given food and aggressive towards his peers. Alongside this, questions regarding
his mother, sally, were also raised. When staff at the nursery had spoken to her she seemed to
show littler concern regarding her son s behavior, she often smells strongly of alcohol and bruises
have been seen on her face. It was therefore my responsibility to take this information from this
receipt of referral on board before then undertaking my role within the role play of a social worker
making an initial visit. Initial Response As is

Baldassare Castiglione, And Giovanni Pico Delia Mirandola
The Renaissance and Literature During the Italian Renaissance, many people began a new way of
thinking and with this new way of thinking, came literature. With these passages or books
characteristics of humanism, individualism, feudalism, and the interest in antiquity became clear.
The writings of Francesco Petrarch, Baldassare Castiglione , and Giovanni Pico delia Mirandola
all give insight to the beginnings of these ideas. Francesco Petrarch is a perfect example of a new
found fascination of antiquity through humanist teachings. In a passage from one of his literary
pieces, Petrarch scorns educators stating, There has arisen of late a set of dialecticians, who are not
only ignorant but demented...They condemn Platoand Aristotle, and laugh at Socrates... Show more

Castiglione shows an interest in humanist teachings in his book describing what the Courtier
must be, for example, ...I would have him well built and shapely of limb, and would have him
show strength and lightness and suppleness... I think the first should be to handle every sort of
weapon well on foot and on horse...and especially to be familiar with those weapons that are
ordinarily used among gentlemen... In this quote Castiglione is explaining how strong a man
should be if he were the ideal Courtier, completely focusing on the importance of a human. As
the book progresses, Castiglione mentions that a Courtier, ...be also a musician and unless,
besides understanding and being able to read notes, he can play upon diverse instruments, as
well as knowing how to play tennis extraordinarily well and, ...that he does not seek or expect
praise for it, nor let him seem to devote much care or time to it, although he may do it admirably...

what he should achieve, and what he should know if he were seeking to become a

First Pair Of Jordan s I was in California and it was during Christmas vacation. I was really
confused on what I wanted for Christmas, so every day I would go online looking for things to
buy. When the days progressed, I started seeing people with lavish shoes and clothes. I really wasn

and there what I would like for Christmas, but I would answer with a shrug of my shoulders. My
brother would give me suggestions on gifts but I would eventually turn them down. But as time
went by, I would go walking around shops until I stood in front of a store named Flight Club. The
doors were opened and the music was blasting from their speaker that you could probably hear

Brains before Beauty in Charlotte Bronte s Jane Eyre Essay
Brains before Beauty in Jane Erye
Beauty is generally classified into two main categories: physical and mental. In the Charlotte
Bronte s Jane Erye, the protagonist rejects by choice and submission, her own physical beauty in
favor of her mental intelligence and humility, and her choice becomes her greatest benefit by
allowing her to win the hand of the man of her desires, a man who has the values Jane herself
believes in. She values her knowledge and thinking before any of her physical appearances
because of her desire as a child to read, the lessons she is taught and the reinforcements of the idea
appearing in her adulthood. During the course of the novel she lives at five homes. In each of
these places, the idea of inner ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jane Erye s next home emerges as the Lowood Institution where she spends six years of her life
learning to become intelligent and morally stringent, while remaining visibly plain. Her lesson of
physical and mental humility comes at the hands of Mr. Brocklehurst, the institution s main
benefactor. Upon seeing a girl with natural curls in her hair, he proclaims: My mission is to
mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh, to teach them to clothe themselves with
shamefacedness and sobriety (pg. 96). Such a strong influence on Jane, at such an early age,
greatly persuades her opinion of her own physical image. She feels her status in life always
remains as a humble and inconspicuous servant with a sharp mind and strict morals. In spending
six years of her most impressionable years of her life at such a repressive institution, she learns a
great deal of humility.
Lowood also teaches Jane a great deal by giving her one of the greatest benefits to her life: a
good education. Jane spends eight years of her life at Lowood where she, had the means of an
excellent education placed within my reach; a fondness for some of my studies, and a desire to
excel in all (pg. 115). Her education means more to her than her simple appearance. She had the
option of just sliding by in her studies and leaving Lowood as soon as possible. Instead, she

Pros And Cons Of E-Portfolio Writing
Dear E Portfolio Reader,
Essay 2 was a paper I had wrote on the causes and effects of lying and by listing the pros and cons
I was able to provide a clear thought. This paper taught me how to introduce a point, you could see
this example in my third paragraph. In my third paragraph I talked about the then presidential
candidates and how they were prime examples of the negative affects lying can create. My writing
will improve more and more because of the newfound ability to catch the reader s attention thus
persuading them into believing me. There are many genres to writing and the one that troubled me
the most was a persuasive essay. I used to hate writing persuasive papers due to the single fact that
I was not able to persuade anyone.

Deception In Pudd Nhead Wilson
Following the conclusion of Pudd nhead Wilson, a novel written by Mark Twain in 1894, but
taking place in the 1850s, it is obvious that the book was inundated with a myriad of differing
themes. However, there is a theme that stands out in terms of being the most influential message
conveyed by Twain. This theme is that deception does not succeed, nor have favorable outcomes.
I was able to choose one specific scene from the novel that truly represents this theme. The scene
that most symbolizes the backfiring and disadvantages of deception is in the scene where Tom is
sold down the river. This scene is important because it accurately depicts the results of deception
and epitomizes the role that trickery plays in one s life. First off, the message... Show more content

In my visual, I have included a backdrop consisting of the town in which he resides. Within the
scene, the houses and buildings are colored darker to represent the citizens negative feelings
towards Tom. Once sold, it can be properly inferred that no one was going to miss... Tom (Twain
78). This disadvantage of the deceit in Pudd nhead Wilson was that Tom s personality developed
for the worse. This is evident in him being sold down the river as his actions and personality,
being driven by greed and a false lifestyle given by Roxy, tainted his reputation. His mistreatment
of Chambers, his gambling, or gaming debts, and drinking addiction, all stemmed from being an
imposter; Roxy s deception moved Tom in the wrong direction, making him an immoral person
(Twain 38). In my visual, I have included two rocks on either side of the boat that Tom is in. This
represents his wrongdoings and the guilt that he carries as a result of his actions when he should
have been a slave. If those rocks were removed then the boat would tip over, sink, and drown him.
Despite his misconduct, Tom must live with the consequences of deceit, one of which is becoming a

Compare And Contrast Dylan Thomas And Because I Could Not...
Two literary pieces, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night by, Dylan Thomas and Because I
Could Not Stop for Death by, Emily Dickinson are both poems that discuss the topic of death. While
there are some similarities and comparisons between the two poems, when it comes to the themes,
both poets writing styles are quite different from one another which makes each poem unique.
Thomas and Dickinson both use identical figurative language devices and other literature
symbolisms as they explain their main themes which contrasts the differences to the concept of
death. These distinct variations between poems are apparent in both the form, and how the
choice of words is used in the poems. Both of the authors have presented two very different ideas
on death. The poems are well distinguished literature devices, they share minor similarities and
differences between each other and how they present the meaning of death to a toll. In each
poem, the poets share distinct views on the perception of death. While Dickinson s poem,
Because I Could Not Stop for Death, structures her poem to present her central theme of
accepting death peacefully and agreeable. On the other hand, the poem Do Not Go Gentle into
That Good Night by, Dylan Thomas uses rejection and denial in the process to present his poem s
theme. Both narrators distinguish death with detailed words or phrases. For example, in Dickinson
s poem she states, Because I could not stop for Death, he kindly stopped for me (1 2).

Risk Arbitrage Case
Risk Arbitrage: Abbott Labs and Alza
Harvard Business Review Case Study
1. BACKGROUND
Risk Arbitrage is essentially just arbitrage with some element of risk. Three main types of risk
arbitrage are merger and acquisition arbitrage (also known as just merger arbitrage), liquidation
arbitrage, and pairs trading. We will focus on merger arbitrage, as it pertains to this case study.
Merger arbitrage is an investment strategy that chooses to capitalize upon arbitrage that presents
when a merger or acquisition deal is announced. Essentially, an arbitrageur is seeking to profit from
the movements of the acquirer s and or target s stock price from the merger. There are two main
types of mergers, a cash merger and a stock merger, which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(260,000*1.2=312,000) at $43.50. If the deal did go through, Chris would expect positive returns
because the stock price of Alza would increase as a result of the merger (longposition would

Another option Chris could take would be to buy Alza put options maturing December 18th at

The Sin Of The Original Sin
When I think of the Original Sin, I think of the world s first sin the patriarchy and matriarchy sin.
Today, the world consists of sinners begging the Lord for forgiveness thanks to Adam and Eve.
How different would the world be if Adam and Eve did not bit the forbidden fruit? Would such
sin still exist today? If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9 King James Version). It is important to keep in
mind that no human being is perfect, only God is perfect. In this essay, readers will get the
opportunity to learn about the Original Sinand Yetzer Harah and how these two theories cannot be
reconciled.
What is the Original Sin?
According to Harent (1911), the original sin may be taken to mean: (1) the sin that Adam
committed; (2) a consequence of this first sin, the hereditary stain with which we are born on
account of our origin or descent from Adam (p.1). In life, temptation can cause one to make
irrational choices. For instance, in the Book of Genesis, we learn that one day Satan decides to
visit Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan tempted Eve by telling her that she would
become a wiser woman if she eats the fruit from the tree of good and evil. Eve is unable to resist
the temptation and decides to eat the fruit. Nonetheless, Eve then tempts Adam by telling him that
she ate the fruit from the tree of good and evil. Adam then goes on to eat the fruit as well. At this
point, it is

A Tale Of Bram Stoker s Dracula
Vampires weren t always the socially in tune creatures that they are now. The whole legend
started from Bram stoker s Dracula . Stoker had created a fictional character based on Vlad the
Impaler or Vlad III. Who for several reasons was a perfect person to pick he was feared by many,
was ruthless, killed his own, and got rid of all the sick and poor... burning them alive. ELI
NIXON stated that Historians put the deaths at the hands of Dracula at somewhere between
40,000 and 100,000 . And finally Vlad may not have sucked blood out of his victims necks, but
he would invite his victims for a feast and immediately after. They would be impaled at the
dinner table. Vlad calmly finishing his meal while dipping his bread in buckets of blood drained
from the people he killed. For these and many other reasons Vlad inspired Stoker to create
Dracula. A soulless monster who possesses an evil soul and feeds on blood. Most recently the
popular Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, has changed how vampires are viewed drastically.
Instead of being horrific monsters there were turned into a teenage girl s twisted fantasy. In Meyer
s book the vampires sparkle under direct sunlight. They ****ing sparkle. For what reasons did
these changes occur? The story of the vampirewas started from Dracula, how did it end up with
Edward the sparkling vampire? Lets start from the first vampire movie Nosferatu directed by F. W.

Essay On Ethical Issues In Iron Man
In 2008, the film Iron Man was released. The film follows Tony Stark, a wealthy businessman
and engineer who transforms himself from a military arms supplier into a super hero, Iron Man,
by building himself a mechanical suit. Throughout the film, Tony Stark makes several ethical
decisions that impact the lives of many. The film opens with Tony Stark visiting Afghanistan to
demonstrate his weapons capabilities. After a successful demonstration, he is ambushed and
injured, and captured by local terrorists who demand that he build the weapons system that he
had just previously just demonstrated. He refuses however, after being tortured and seeing the
life of the doctor who saved his life being threatened, he lies to his captors and says that he will
consent to building the weapons system. He instead takes up the project of building a
mechanical suit to help him and the doctor escape. Here we arrive at his first major ethical
decision. Lying to terrorists may seem like an easy decision, however in this case it puts the life
of another individual at risk. If caught he and the man who saved his life will be killed. He
completes the suit and manages to escape. As he returns to the United States, he immediately calls
a press conference where he informs the press that his company will no longer produce weapons.
This is another major ethical decision made by Tony Stark. This decision was made to prevent loss
of innocent life and to keep the weapons out of the hands of terrorists.

  • 2. A Slave Girl This profoundly moving, first hand account of Slavery during the 19th century, gives the reader invaluable and in depth insight into the horrifying treatment of African Americans slaves and completely unveils the true ugliness that will permanently mark the country s beginnings. Written by Harriet Jacobs under the pseudonym Linda Brent, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl depicts how it was to grow up somebody else s property as a female slave, as well as, her grueling fight to liberate herself and her children. The average life of a slave could depend significantly upon whose possession they were in. Certain slave owners, though few, were considerably more compassionate and humane in their treatment of their slaves such as her dead mother s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The North did not particularly care about the injustices or cruelties associated with the institution of slavery in the states it was already established in. They did greatly care about it spreading to new western states though, as it would in turn strengthen the South s overall power. If allowed to expand, slavery would threaten the livelihood of the average white American. The South in turn feared that Abraham Lincoln, a member of the National Union party, getting elected meant that no new state would be allowed to become slave states. As a result, the South s power in congress would slip, which would allow abolitionists to come in and abolish slavery completely. Even with a whole war that had slavery at its core, the real issue of slavery was its effects on White Americans not the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Greatest Achievements Of The Mayans The Maya, a civilization lost in time, is still remembered through their advancements. The Maya roamed MesoAmerica (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras) from 2600BC 900AD. The Mayans lived a simple, polytheistic life and in their spare time, enjoyed playing pok a tok, a typical Mayan ball game. Yet, the Mayans are remembered through their achievements, but what is their greatest achievement? The achievements together are all significant, large in scale, genius, cutting edge, brilliant, and have large amounts of physical or mental effort. In spite of that four stand out: the trade network, the architecture, the calendars, and the number system. In between, all of the outstanding achievements, the number system can capture the award for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Influence Of Public Policy In The United States Public Policy is the way that our Executive branch of government help maintain the order of the country as well as the needs of its citizens. Of course, no one system can be individually perfect and solve all issues. But the public policies in the United States have been molded on off racial prejudices in the past, and off legacy racism in the present. Discrimination that affects the racial dynamic of most urban cities in the nation. In this course we have discussed the necessity for public policyand the ways in which it affects this nation. Public Policy our governmentand the citizens that have an impact through voting help shape the economic and social system for the United States. To go more into depth, that means that education, employment, housing, health(care), our communities, and the criminal justice system are all impacted by the decisions made by our government.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Public policy has influenced philanthropists to do some of the beneficial deeds they have done over the years. That will not only benefit themselves, but also select communities and groups of people. On the other hand, public policy has also helped with the creation of laws that do not necessarily benefit the people . Laws and bills passed such as the Bill of Rights or the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Although there are actions being executed by the government, sometimes they are not as beneficial as they were intended to be. Regular citizens as well as executives of the law can sometimes find ways to misuse or bypass the intentions of the law for their own personal purposes. One thing I have learned is that racism, inequality, and inequity play a role in how the laws that were created, are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Strengths and Weaknesses of the Biological Model and... Developmental theories embody perspectives about environmental forces and human essence that build a path of human development. Developmental psychopathology theories embody these perspectives as well, and the information from normal and pathological human life courses enlighten current models of development (Davies Bhugra, 2004). Thus, for instance, the healthy child and the biological model both agree that certain predetermined behavioural pattern may be impervious to environmental forces. Similarly, knowledge about relapse to previous patterns of behaviour necessitates the re evaluation of the idea that every process of development is a change and; that every previous pattern of behaviour is transformed into entirely new one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The biological model distinguishes several of the studies in the genetics of psychological disorder (Joseph, 2006). At this point, environmental factors, or the interface between them and the genes, serve hardly any function in the possible result. For instance, Kallman s (1946 as cited in Joseph, 2006, 237) study on the genetic aspect of schizophrenia reinforces the application of the biological model, just like the presence or absence of specific substances on depression (ibid, p. 237). In all of these instances, the presence of specific attributes is presumed likely to influence a specific form of pathology. Even though the biological model is remarkable in its straightforwardness, it still has several limitations; for instance, not every individual who has a genetic indicator at a specific point in time is expected to display consequent psychopathology or a similar form of psychopathology (Miller Mason, 2002). For example the case that every child of schizophrenic parents does not develop schizophrenia, or that not every monozygotic twin exhibits similarity in relation to schizophrenia indicates that other factors have to be taken into account. It is vital to emphasise that the failure to come across a significant prevalence of schizophrenic children of schizophrenic parents suggest that factors such as immunity, coping approaches, and invulnerability to stress, are protective factors ... • 6. A Study On Common Cancer Treatments Essay BACKGROUND Common cancer treatments such as anthracyclines and trastuzumab are associated with an increased risk of cardiotoxicity, which is responsible for significant mortality and morbidity in cancer survivors.[1, 2] Assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) has been, and continues to be the most widely used method for cardiotoxicity risk assessment prior to, surveillance during, and surveillance after administration of potentially cardiotoxic cancer treatment.[3] Since the 1970s,[4] multiple gated acquisition scanning (MUGA) has been the preferred imaging modality for baseline and serial assessment of LVEF for cardiotoxicity. There is concern that contemporary gamma cameras may not allow optimal patient positioning for LVEF assessments.[3] Thus, it is possible that contemporary MUGA in cancer patients may not provide accurate estimates of LVEFs. Inaccurate LVEF assessment may carry significant implications for the care of cancer patients receiving potentially cardiotoxic treatment since LVEFs play an important role in decisions to start, continue, hold or stop such treatment. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of LVEFs obtained by contemporary clinical MUGA in consecutive patients with cancer with reference LVEFs from cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), the gold standard technique for assessment of left ventricular volumes and systolic function.[5] METHODS Patients and data collection The study sample consisted of ... • 7. Christian Worldview And The Secular Worldview Of Account To compare the Christian worldview to the secular worldview of account, one must understand the definition of what a worldview is and what a Christian worldview looks like as well as what a secular worldview looks. According to Valk (2012), Worldviews are those larger pictures that inform and in turn form our perceptions of reality. They are visions of life as well as ways of life, are individual and personal, yet bind adherents together communally (p. 1). It is not uncommon for individuals to have different worldviews because the meaning of the word is a set of beliefs one uses to understand the world. All people grow up viewing the world differently because to the different things they experience in their lives. A worldview defines the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here the only thing that matters is a man. Within secular philosophy individuals only trust the scientific method to know anything. So basically, if something can t be observed, tested, or experimented, then it does not exist. This is why there is no room for spirituality because it can t be tested, so that means it does not exist. Secular ethics are based on what humans decide as far as standards and values. Humans depend on science, reason, and a historical experience to figure out what is right and what is wrong. It s tricky because standards will not be the same for everyone because everyone has a different background and reason. There are different views within secular science, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history which are all based on man and mans perspective. Overall secular humanist view everything from the standpoint of what is seen and what can be known the senses. Hitchcock (1994) stated the following: The ultimate failure of Secular Humanism is in the fact that of its very nature is promises what it cannot fulfill. By encouraging people to put their trust in earthly happiness, it programs them for disillusionment. This is in no small measure the reason why the history of the modern world has been characterized, intellectually, by philosophies of pessimism like Existentialism and by often rancorous bitterness over various plans for worldly improvement. • 8. The Diverse Roles of Women in Movies Essay The Diverse Roles of Women in Movies In society we have a lot of women actresses. Some tend to play the motherly type, some play the manipulator type and some even play the victims of abusive relationships. No matter what women seem to be coming up in the industry of movies in more ways than before. The three movies I have chosen to analyze in my critique are Heartbreakers, Baby Boy and Stepmom. These three movies all have women in them that either play a major role or the main role. All their roles are very different in character and none of the women in these three movies play a similar role. In the movie Heartbreakers the two main women are Jennifer Love Hewitt (the daughter) and Sigourney Weaver (the mother). These two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second movie in which a woman plays a major role in is Baby Boy. This movie, I believe did not do too much damage to the box offices when it first came out, but it sure portrayed women in a very negative way. The main character is actually a man by the name of Tyrese Gibson. He plays a boy who is struggling to grow up and become not only an independent adult, but also a responsible father (to more than one child). The main female role in the movie is Tyrese s baby s mother. She is in love with him and would do anything to keep him happy. She let s him use her car and she let s him stay at her place at any time with her and their son. He cheats on her a lot and at one point even hits her. This was a major part in the movie. He had promised her he would never lay his hands on her and he did. She stopped talking to him for quite some time, and that whole time you could sense they were both miserable without eachother. Some men tend to hurt women for the simple facts that they just don t know how to control their anger or because they were never taught good communication skills. They end up telling one another that they can t live without each other and they get back together. She ends up getting pregnant by him again and they get married and live happily ever after. • 9. Mozart, Also Known As Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, also known as Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian composer who was recognized as one of the greatest composers of the Western Hemisphere. Mozart was considered equal to Haydn and beethoven for he improved upon the Viennese Musical School. Some of the things that made Mozart different from other composers was that he wrote and practiced all genres of music, and was quite skilled at it as well. He also had a great amount of skill in his every one of the genres he has practiced. There are many factors that have influenced his music. For example, his childlike personality and other factors such as his life experiences, caused by his father, which are the primarily causes of the nature of his music. Mozart was... In addition to uttered vulgar platitudes, 34 Mozart s frequent facial grimaces, inadvertent repetitive movements of hands and feet, and jumping, 43,44 have been regarded by some as phonic and motor tics and used to support the diagnosis of TS, for example: Mozart s sister‐in‐law, wrote in one of her letters that he often used to touch his napkin to his lips, make grimaces, tap his hands or feet on objects, or play with hats, pockets, tables and chairs seemingly playing clavier, and so this shows how some of his actions were very much impulsive much like a child. Mozart also used to write letters to his family members, especially his sister and wife. The content of the letters that he used to send was different from other things that he used to send to family members and other loved ones, for example: Milan, Oct. 5, 1771: I AM in good health, but always sleepy. Papa has snatched from my pen all that I had to write about, which is, that he has already written everything. Signora Gabrielli is here, and we are soon going to see her, as we wish to become acquainted with all distinguished singers. But I am glad to say that I was wrong, the first night of raising my virtual child took me by surprise, on how detailed everything was. Going in I had expectations and hopes for Bilal to fulfill, I made sure that my expectations and hopes for him were more realistic and was not pushing him out of his confront zone in any kind of way. My expectations and hopes were that Bilal always stayed true to himself, never act like someone that he really is not, and that he builds secure connections with people that he holds ... And by three years of age, the toddler is expected to gain anywhere from three to five pounds, grow about three inches in height, and also have all twenty of his/her primary teeth grown in (2016). According to Jean Piaget, there are four stages of cognitive development that a child will go through. The first stage is known as the sensorimotor stage; it is from birth to about two years of age. The sensorimotor stage is a period that the cognitive development rapidly grows and during this time frame the infant develops an understanding of the world through trial and error using their senses and actions (McLeod, 2015). • 12. Similarities Between Hinduism And Buddhism Learning about both Hinduism and Buddhism, particularly about the art and architecture of both cultures made me realize they are not that different as I thought first. Both cultures are beautiful and rich, and if someone takes a deeper look can see that they are depending on each other. Many people forget that Buddha was born into a Hindu society, and his views and beliefs which led to a brand new culture are based on Hinduism. Of course I am not saying the two are the same because that wouldn t make any sense. However, the similarities are visible, just the way differences are visible too, and these things make both cultures so amazing. First I would like to point out some of the similarities and differences between Hindu and Buddhist faiths which I think are important to understand their art. Both religions put karma and reincarnation into the center of believes. Both religions believe in several spiritual practices in attempts to get beyond the thinking mind and into a state of relaxation and awareness. However, they do not share their gods, in Hinduism they share their religion with many gods and goddesses, and in Buddhismthere is no god, Buddha himself was a leader. Knowing the two cultures basic views and believes it is easier to compare their art and architecture, since mostly they are based on the religions. The first similarity which I think is very oblivious is the stupa. Stupas are present in both cultures and the base for the temples in Hinduism and Buddhism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Rocket Boys Character Analysis During the 1950s, the American family structure was strongly patriarchal in which the man of the house went to work to provide for his family, his wife stayed at home to take care of the house and kids, and the kids were expected to go to school and be very well disciplined and respectable. Even in the coal towns of Central Appalachia this familyorientation was prevalent, as such the children of the miners were set too standards that would carry this structure on for many decades. When a child finds that they do not meet the expectations that are levied upon him/her by their parents and the rest of the community their life is made difficult as they struggle to find who they truly are and still try to live up to what others expect. This is exactly the case that Homer Sonny Hickam Jr. finds himself in. Through his memoir, Rocket Boys, Homer Hickam retells the story of his youth as a boy struggling through life trying to become who he wants to be while his father tries to push him to be who he is expected to be. In the small coal towns of West Virginia, the youth was expected to primarily do one of two things. Which one you were expected of depended upon your gender, if you were male you were expected to graduate high school, maybe, and then go into the mines to dig coal like your father and his father before him. If you were female you were expected to graduate high school and then marry a miner and raise his kids and care for his house just like your mother and her mother before her. For Sonny though we know from the very first page that his parents had opposing ideas of what was expected of him as he writes, I didn t know that my hometown was at war with itself over its children and that my parents were locked in a kind of bloodless combat over how my brother and I would live our lives (Hickam 1). Just a few pages later it is discovered that his mother wanted Sonny to pursue something other than mining and exactly what boys of Coalwood were expected to do; Almost all of the grown up boys I knew had either joined the military services or gone to work in the mine. I had no idea what the future held in store for me. The only thing I knew for sure was my mother did not see me going into the mine (Hickam ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The Effect Of The Slat System Essay In order to gauge any effects the slat system, with various weights, may have on the shock wave, several baseline tests were run. These tests did not have the device installed in order to record and understand the basic performance of a shock wave coming straight from the shock tube. To record the pressure profile of the wave within the expansion section, GageScope was used. A trigger was set to detect a rapid rise in voltage from the pressure transducer, and the program would record 1ms before and 10ms after the trigger. The initial baseline test can be seen in Figure X below. For a greater focus on the effects of the device on the shock wave, all charts for comparison has been narrowed to 2ms after the trigger. The two significant runs showing the pressure profile of the shock wave are shown in Figures X Y. Figure x: Baseline Test 1 Full Recording Figure x: Baseline Test 1 2ms Recording Figure x: Baseline Test 2 These figures show that the pressure rises from atmospheric (0mV) to peak pressure in a rise time of around 0.000039 seconds, or 39 Вµs. This is representative of a shock wave due to a nearly instantaneous rise time. Baseline test 1 burst at 51 psi while baseline test 2 burst at 53 psi. The initial design did not perform effectively at achieving its intended functions when installed and tested with the shock tube. Upon firing the shock tube, the slats would not rotate. Several firings were attempted, all resulting in no rotation of the rods. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Perceptual coloris the way it is see from the eye, which depends on lighting factors. Monet is a good example of an impressionist painter who tried to paint exactly what his eyes were seeing rather than what the color was supposed to be. The color for me makes it seem as if each solider matters. Impact Of Globalization On The Global Economy Over the last number of years, it could be said that the growth in the global economy has increased a vast amount and is rapidly continuing in this direction. The world as we know it is now becoming progressively more connected through a process called Globalisation. Grossman and Helpman (1993) say that there are two main trends too which are key contributors that help make up this process of globalisation. The first of these being the advancement in technology innovations and secondly following this the idea that nations in the world are becoming more open, however also more independent. To continue from this, a third trend suggested by Bates (2010) is now a recognition that educationat all levels is now a global service industry. In addition to this, Jeffery S (2002) implies that Globalisation s extensive definition could be a disguised title to a great deal of underlying issues and therefore could be a buzzword that is being frequently used to describe current world situations to do with trade lines between countries, a freer movement of capital goods and services and a general more all round greater dependence on the global economy including education. Burbules and Torres (2000) suggest that the change in dynamics through globalisation would therefore have a further cause for concern on people involved in the educational endeavour. Essay about Oscar Wilde s An Ideal Husband Oscar Wilde s An Ideal Husband Oscar Wilde (1845 1903) lived an outrageous and controversial life which was well publicized and condemned, as his life defied the strict social mores of the time. His plays, in particular An Ideal Husband, 1895 portray Victorian society as viciously hypocritical at it s worst and laughably pretentious at it s best. This is acheived through the characterisation of Lady Gertrude chiltern, as her ridiculously high morals (an important factor of earnestness) almost cost her her marriage. she demanded to be told if robert had done some shameful thing, in which case they would separate. • 53. The Sin Of The Original Sin When I think of the Original Sin, I think of the world s first sin the patriarchy and matriarchy sin. Today, the world consists of sinners begging the Lord for forgiveness thanks to Adam and Eve. How different would the world be if Adam and Eve did not bit the forbidden fruit?
