Shakespeare s King Lear is a play of redemption in which the king moves from moral blindness to a
clearer vision of what really matters.

This is evident in William Shakespeare s King Lear where Lear goes mad which enables him to
broaden his insight and wisdom and as a result he develops truer and more honest values. This
allows him to see the wrongdoings he had made in the past and atone for them consequently
redeeming himself.
Human suffering can catalyse an individual s anagnorisis which gives them a clearer vision to

Initially, Lear is blinded by his own pride as he sees love as simply flattering words. Shakespeare
s use of an aside for Cordelia when she states I am sure my love s more ponderous than my
tongue depicts her truthfulness and honesty which serves to amplify Lear s blindness as he
misunderstands her causing him to disown her and disclaim all [his] paternal care, Propinquity,
and property of blood. His moral blindness ruins his relationship with Cordelia as banishes her
and gives his kingdom to his other daughters, Reagan and Goneril. However, as the play
progresses his vision becomes clearer as he realises Reagan and Goneril s deceitful nature,
likening Regan to a vulture due to her sharp toothed unkindness. After going mad, Lear is able to
see how he has faulted Cordelia and it is his reconciliation with Cordelia which signifies his partial
redemption. His character development from a self absorbed king to a caring father reflects his
clearer vision for what truly matters. When he slowly regains his sanity, he remembers not these
garments but recognises his daughter as he tells I think this lady to be my child Cordelia. This
indicates his change in values as the first thing he attempts to identify is his daughter. This is
reinforced in the high modality language when Lear claims it will take a brand from heaven
separate him from Cordelia. The apologetic tone when Lear tells Cordelia I ll kneel down and
ask of thee forgiveness symbolises Lear s enlightenment as it exemplifies his desire to repent for
his actions. The death of Cordelia redeems Lear as his actions highlight his love for her.
Shakespeare employs religious imagery in the stage direction re enter King Lear, with Cordelia
dead in his arms which alludes to Virgin Mary holding her dead son Christ in her arms. This

They want the person looking at the ad to sympathize with the man in the image, the man

On the man s right (the direction in which he is looking) is a woman wearing a short black dress
with black heeled shoes. The woman is holding onto the right arm of the man, clutching a purse
with her right hand. Her head is turned toward him and she appears to be smiling. Much of our
reaction to this ad comes solely from looking at these two individuals. More specifically, from the
image of the man.
The brightness of the man s shirt and the bags he is carrying stands in contrast to the black of the
woman s dress and thus attracts our eye toward him. The fact that he is carrying so many bags,
whereas the other individuals in the ad have at most one bag, also makes him the center of our
attention. By using metonymy, we substitute the bags that the man is carrying to mean that there
has been a day of shopping, a shopping spree perhaps. The paradigmatic relation between the man
and woman, aided by our own codes of what the duties of both the male and female are in a
relationship, leads us to assume that the bags do not belong to the man but rather, he is carrying
them for the woman next to him. It would be one thing if the man were walking along carrying the
bags by himself but once we see the woman next to him, holding onto his arm, our mind begins to
draw its own conclusions. Another paradigmatic relation begins to form after we have made the

protests before the Arab Spring, but none created this domino effect that Tunisia had to the rest of
the Arab countries. The Arab Spring protests were in the right time of both technological
advancement, and economic concern, that Arab society felt unanimously encouraged and desperate
enough to share their grievances on the government. Scott Anderson exclaims his enthusiasm with
the Protests when they began, like most western observers looking at the Middle East with

In Phillip Pullman s The Golden Compass the theme of identity is explored through the journey
of a young girl named Lyra. Taken from her ordinary world at Oxford University, Lyra explores
the world through the eyes of different groups: the gyptians, ice bears and witches. Lyra does not
journey alone, accompanying her is her conscience and soul otherwise known as her daemon,
Pantalaimon. Daemons represent your spirit animal but have the brain of your conscience as they

People are always questioning whether Hell and Heaven are real or not. The thought of an
afterlife is something every human thinks about. In Core 3 we read many books, one being Virgil
s The Aeneid, and another being Homer s The Odyssey. Both books have to do with men
attempting to complete a journey. Both books involve the Trojan War and journeys across roaring
seas. During each book, the men enter the afterlife with a guide to help them through Hell, and each
author gives their own thoughts depicting how it might appear. This year in Core 4 we read Dante
s Inferno, a book about Dante going to the afterlife guided by Virgil, a Roman poet. The authors all

All the stories describe what Hell might be like, just from three different perspectives. There are
also differences when comparing the three. In Dante s first Canto, we learn that large beasts guard
the gates of Hell and, to get up to heaven, you must pass through Hell and Purgatory. The large
beasts at the front gates are similar in both Homer s and Virgil s idea of what the front gate
could be like. Dante has Virgil to guide him, Odysseus did not really have a guide but Aeneas
had the Sibyl. Dante, like Aeneas and Odysseus, performed rituals before he entered Hell. When
Dante enters hell he is very scared knowing that very few people who are alive that ever enter
Hell and also come back. In all three stories the living are not welcomed into Hell. Aeneas had

cries of the tortured souls and understand this is a place for torment. In the Aeneid, to enter Hell,
