Primary Study Summary
Primary Study Summary
Introduction Hypothesis Previous to Cao, Brennan, Booth (2015), various studies have examined
the relationship between acquisition of reading skills and neuronal activation. Despite the extensive
evidence that there are dynamic changes in systems where adaptation takes place, it is still
unknown to what extent the acquisition of fundamentally different languages results in differing
brain networks. The current study proposes the hypothesis that learning to read leads to a growing
divergence between different orthographies with increased experience. The legitimacy of the
hypothesis is supported by the fact that alphabetic orthographies (i.e. English) use highly frequent
mapping between letters (graphemes) and sounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(2015), the focus of the research expands on previous findings that there is a modulatory role of
primary language in learning to read a secondary language. The phonological aspect is of particular
concern as the researchers distinguish between addressed and assembled phonologies. Known as
the dual route model of word learning, assembled phonology (i.e. grapheme to phoneme mapping)
is typically utilized to read unfamiliar words whereas addressed phonology makes use of the
relationship between the visual appearance of words and their sounds, and is consequently
employed for familiar word reading. Due to the differences in orthography between English and
Chinese, it is unsurprising that alphabetic languages emphasize assembled phonology while
logographic languages, without letter phoneme mappings, rely on addressed phonology. As found
in Cao, Brennan, Booth (2015), existing research indicates that cognitive and neural mechanisms
can be shaped by native language. In Mei et al. (2015), the assimilation accomodation hypothesis
essentially posits that these influentially developed neural mechanisms will inevitably affect the
processing of a second language. The present study adopted a Korean artificial language training
paradigm in order to examine the potential differences hypothesized to exist between native
English speakers and native Chinese speakers. The recruits consisted of 42 native Chinese
speakers and 43 native English speakers, neither of which had prior experience with the Korean
language. Within both samples, participants were divided in terms of the type of training (i.e.
addressed phonology vs assembled phonology). A total of 120 artificial language words were
used. They were divided into two groups of stimuli in which some were trained words and others
were not trained words (in order to detect the transfer of learning). Participants were asked to read
each presented word with haste and precision in mind. Data was collected through an

Bootlegging and Al Capone Essay
BOOTLEGGING In 1919, the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, this amendment made the
consumption and sell of alcohol illegal. A group of people referred to as moral reformers felt that
banning the sell and consumption of alcohol would better protect the lives of people as well as
make them better (Rose). Businesses, such as industrial businesses, believed that it would better
productivity if the workers could remain sober. The Volsted Act was passed shortly after the
Eighteenth Amendment to make sure it was enforced since local authorities did not do such; there
were only fifteen hundred agents to enforce the law and the act was also underfunded. Therefore,
the Prohibition was not enforced well enough and the organized crime rates... Show more content on

guilty as (he) (was). Alphonse Capone (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Capone saw nothing
wrong with bootlegging and he often expressed it and showed his opposition towards the
Prohibition Act. He stated that, Prohibition (had) made nothing but trouble . He is basically
saying that he is not the problem with the crime in Chicago but the government is, for enforcing
the law. He also expressed how, When (he) sell(s) liquor, it is bootlegging; when (his) patrons
serve it on Lake Shore Drive, it is called hospitality. Now he is saying how he feels the government
is discriminating against how alcohol is distributed. Capone is a criminal who s trying to put reason
behind his illegal actions (BrainyQuote).
MURDER
Al Capone was notorious for his bootlegging and annihilating his competition; in order to do
that, he had to kill them. Before Capone became the big time bootlegger/ murderer/ assassination
coordinator, he had already taken a couple of lives. Capone had begun working for Torrio as an
enforcer, bouncer, and bartender; he was in a bar fight that got him his scar and his nickname
Scarface . Shortly after this incident, in 1919, in New York he was arrested because there were
suspicions that he

If You Ain T First, It s The Only Thing Analysis
It was in 1955, in a Sports Illustrated article just before the 1956 Rose Bowl, that Vince
Lombardi was quoted saying, Sure, winning isn t everything; it s the only thing. Or maybe one
can recall the 2006 film in which Will Ferrell s character Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR superstar, can
be heard saying, If you ain t first, you re last. These two quotes are just a couple of prime examples
when it comes to understanding the value of competition in our American culture. There is an
assumption that only those who win can and will be successful. Understanding that the United
States is a place that is supposedly ONE nation under God, yet is so driven by the assumption that
you must always win at everything, begs the question; what is the significance... Show more content

It can be noted in an article from 2016 in Psychology Today, that for decades, psychologists
noticed something ironic among top athletic competitors. Setting aside those who were clearly
happy having won first place, and looking at those who society would call losers (second and
third), it was more often than not, those who came away with bronze medals appeared more
accomplished and happier than those who won silver. The significance in this can be seen through a
greater appreciation from those who barely won than from those who completely out performed
their competition or fell somewhere in the middle. An article from the Huffington Post furthers this
idea of happiness and winning. The article references research done for the Journal of Experimental
Social Psychology, in which they were researching this exact topic. The researchers wrote, Happy
people savor little things that occur frequently, and unhappy people strive for intense experiences
that rarely occur. Their study provides evidence that a difference in attitude greatly shapes how our
culture views and understands

The Last Man, and Mathilde. Mrs. Shelley died of brain cancer on February 1st, 1851, in

Interactive Writing Process Analysis
It has come to my understanding that you have mixed feelings about allowing interactive writing in
the classroom. I m going to pose a few questions for you to think about. What single teaching
technique can be used to aid in the development of phonological skills and help children attribute
meaning to print? How can teachers create a lesson that permits whole group instruction and
individual attention at the same time? How can the teacher practice skills without losing the
engagement of the class? How can learning to read and write be enjoyable for students? The answer
to these questions is interactive writing. Let s first start off with some background information on
just what interactive writing is, its purpose and some uses of... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
The first step in the interactive writing process is to provide active learning experiences. Because
students share countless mutual experiences at school, there s a lot to choose from to write about
during interactive writing. Reading and responding to a story the teacher has read is another way to
share a learning experience. Lastly, allowing students to share personal experiences from their home
life and community initiates a writing experience. Whatever way a teacher decides to start a writing
experience, it s imperative that students are engaged in the process and that the teacher is pulling
from students prior knowledge of an experience they shared together. Establishing the topic comes
next in the interactive writing process. The topic for the interactive writing activity comes by way
of the students joint common experience. Teachers facilitate a discussion with students around their
shared experience as they form sentences they will later put on paper. During this time, the teacher
emboldens students to express themselves in ways that implicitly capture their experience.
Composing the text, or negotiating, follows establishing the topic in the interactive writing
experience. During this step, the teachers and students decide how they will say what they want to
write. The wording and phrasing is a coconstructuve effort between the teacher and students. As
always, the teacher facilitates a discussion to develop a story or a sentence. Once a collective
decision is made, the teacher has the students repeat what they will write numerous times before
beginning to write. This is done so the students remember the sentences and can predict the
following word when it comes time to write. Writing the text, or constructing, is the fourth step of
the interactive writing process. While writing, the teacher and

The Last Supper Research Paper
Research Essay
The Last Supper painted by Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the most famous and complex works of
art in the world. A better understanding of this painting will enable people to understand Da Vinci s
mind, and give people an insight into the Renaissance period.
This painting was commissioned by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. Ludovico Sforza wanted
this particular scene painted in the dining hall of the Convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in
Milan, Italy. In 1495, Leonardo Da Vinci began work on The Last Supper and completed the
painting in 1498. When painting this mural, Da Vinci did not take the traditional approach. Instead
of making this a Fresco, an art technique of painting on a moist, plaster surface with colors ground

The first reason comes from the fact that Da Vinci created his own technique, and was able to
make use of bright vibrant colors in his work. Another reason this painting is impressive is
because of the level of emotion Da Vinci was able to convey on the faces of the Apostles. Other
depictions of The Last Supper fall short of Da Vinci s painting because they can not express the
intense emotion the way Da Vinci did. The Last Supper was not the first famous biblical scene ,
but it changed the biblical art scene because of the apostles specific expressions and the intimate
feeling that they create. (Mussio 3). This includes the facial expressions that the apostles wear and
body movements that they make. The final reason this painting is considered a masterpiece is
because of the one point perspective Da Vinci achieves. In this painting, every element of the
painting is centered around Jesus Christ. This incredible one point perspective was achieved by Da
Vinci when he hammered a nail into the wall, then tied a string to it to make marks that helped
guide his hands (Puchko 2). The revolutionary one point perspective, new technique Da Vinci uses,
and incredible portrayal of emotions makes this painting a marvel of the Renaissance

A Study On New Guinea
New Guinea is located in Indonesia, which is situated between Asia and Australia. Papua is a
country which occupies the eastern half of New Guinea and is not a very well explored country,
geographically, or culturally. A small tribe of about 3000 people occupies a remote and rural part
of the southeastern side of the island and they are known as the Korowaitribe. The Korowai people
were discovered in Papua New Guineain 1974. This tribe along with many other tribes in Papua
New Guineaexperience little to no contact with other tribes or outsiders. The Korowai tribe is

anthropologists. Emily Payne, a publisher in the Daily Mail, says anthropologists suspect that
cannibalism is no longer practiced by the Korowai clans, despite reports of it as recently as 2006
(Payne, 2015). A reporter for the Smithsonian magazine named, Paul Raffaele, visited the
Korowai tribe in New Guinea to find the truth about their cannibalism. He reported that, today
the Korowai are among the very few tribes believed to eat human flesh. They live about 100
miles inland from the Arafura Sea, which is where Michael Rockefeller, a son of then New York
governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared in 1961 while collecting artifacts from another Papuan
tribe; his body was never found. Most Korowai still live with little knowledge of the world beyond
their homelands and frequently feud with one another. Some are said to kill and eat male witches
they call khakhua.

Analysis Of The Circumplex Model In On Golden Pond
The Circumplex Model: Adaptability and Flexibility Throughout On Golden Pond, it is apparent
that Chelsea, Norman, and Ethel are rigidly enmeshed. According to Olson s circumplex model,
rigidly enmeshed families have authoritarian leadership, strict discipline, roles rarely change,
there is too little change. Additionally, enmeshment in families is illustrated by very high
closeness, very high loyalty, high dependency, and a lack of individuality (Sanders Bell, 2011).
Although Chelsea is distant with her family in the number of visits it is an artificial distance of
time and space. They are strongly emotionally entangled as demonstrated through the ability of
the family to emotionally affect one and other. Slightly like the characters in On Golden Pond,
the family in Stepmom appear to be chaotically enmeshed. The circumplex model claims families
who are chaotic present with a lack of leadership, erratic discipline, dramatic role shifts, and too
much change (Sanders Bell, 2011). Chaos is present in the structure of the two living environments
of the children: one environment is structured and the other one is disorderly. This leads to
confusion for the children because the system lacks consistency. Enmeshment is personified
through the children s emotional fusion with their mother. When Jackie is upset with Isabel, the
children are upset with Isabel. The children and the mother s emotions are intertwined. On the
other hand, Rita slightly contrasts the two families above as she appears to be rigidly
disengaged instead of enmeshed. Rita and Denny are not intimately close. This is illustrated as
Rita responds to a question by saying, loyalty? I [have] you know, I [have] tried to explain it to
my husband ... I think he [is] thick (Gilbert, 1983). Rita s family lacks the flexibility to change.
People get married and have kids. There is no self exploration, enlightenment, and adaptability is
absent. The Concrete Content and Abstract Process Norman characterized several content and
process issues throughout On Golden Pond. The first part of the movie exposes Norman s fixation
on his age and pending death. From his confrontation with the kids, while refueling his boat to his
efforts about getting a job,

Thomas Hobbes And The Social Contract
Thomas Hobbes (1588 1679), an English philosopher published the work, Leviathan, which
proposed the concept of the social contract, in which societal assimilation mandates submission to
authoritarian rule, with a relinquishment of certain rights, in return for protection and aid. Hobbes
offered a foundational premise for benefits that otherwise might be absent, if not for societal
constructs. John Locke, another English philosopher published the Essay Concerning Human
Understanding, which expounded on the work of Hobbes by proposing a more integrated and
ordered society. The societal implications meant a surrender of some individual freedoms in return

Cesare believed that punishment was an effective deterrent to crime, as the offender is rational and
in control of their actions and behaviors. Cesare expressed that the punishment should fit the crime
and that adjudication and punishment should be both swift and certain . He advocated for due
process on the implication of innocence until proven guilty and condemned torture on the same
pretense as torturous punishment towards self incrimination implies guilt prior to a guilty verdict
by a judicial body. His principles influenced classic criminology in the principles of punishment, due
process, rationality, and human rights. The Bill of Rights in the US constitution has several concepts
influenced, some believe, by his writings. (Cesare Beccaria, 2017)Jeremy Bentham, author of
Introduction to the Principles of Moral and Legislation , built on Cesare statement that punish
should fit the crime , by asserting that the hedonistic nature of man requires that the pain or
punishment of committing the crime outweigh the pleasure or reward obtained from committing
the crime (Schmalleger, 2010). Bentham asserted the position that human rationality and hedonistic
pursuits factored into the mentality of an individual s decision to commit a crime based on proper
or extreme punishments to serve as a deterrent. Hobbes

Marc Chagall is considered as one of the most popular artists of the 20th Century, famous for his
poetic, surreal imagery that represent a topsy turvy world, combining fantasy and spiritually
with a modernist style. Although the famous modern artist Marc Chagall is not only known as a
Jewish artist, his background is the vehicle through which he sees the world and becomes the
language of his universally valid art. Chagall once remarked in the Yiddish literary journal

Wikipedia, The New York Yankees signed Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox after the 1919

participants thereafter (Wikipedia World Series). Between 1947 and 1964 the New York

not only be to stimulate competition in both the National and American leagues, but to give the
spotlight to other teams for a change. In the end, if a salary cap is not issued, these results will
continue and baseball will eventually fail. A lot of controversy regarding those opposed to the idea

hydraulic regulation method was proposed to achieve on site hydraulic balance for the district
heating systems with distributed variable speed pumps configuration. The proposed method was
comprised of a new hydraulic model, which was developed to adapt the distributed variable speed
pumps configuration, and a calibration model with genetic algorithm. By carrying out the
proposed method step by step, the flow rates of all distributed pumps can be progressively adjusted
to their designated values. A hypothetic district heating system with 2 heat sources and 10
substations was taken as a case study to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method. Two
scenarios were investigated respectively. In Scenario I, the flow rate of one substation varied
according to its heat demand and the flow rates of other substations maintained their original
values. And in Scenario II, the flow rates of all substations varied synchronously with the same
relative rate. The results of the both scenarios indicated that all pumps could be properly adjusted to
their designated flow rates by the proposed method with a high frequency adjustment resolution as

Guns Are Needed in America
The Constitution of the United States gives the reason why Americans can own guns; A well
regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and
bear Arms, shall not be infringed (Amendment II). The Second Amendment of the Constitution was
ratified on December 15, 1791 because the Founding Fathers of the United States of America
understood that guns were necessary for hunting, protection, and military involvement. The
Founding Fathers understood that life apart from guns would be virtually impossible. Today, guns
are necessary for the same reasons that they were necessary 225 years ago, but some things must
be done to make guns more safe; in fact, many of the problems that guns are related to, can be
solved.
Many Americans believe that guns are no longer necessary and that they create more harm than
good. These people believe that guns should be banned. The banning of guns in America would
not stop crime or even reduce it; instead, that proposal would have a negative effect on crime rates,
as well as a negative effect on many other things in America.
Guns have always existed in America; guns actually existed before the United States of America
was established. According to 2014 statistics, around three hundred million guns are in America,
and 31% of American households own one or more guns (Alpers et al). Banning guns would not

Causes And Consequences Of Global Warming
The Global Issue
Over the years, the increasing concern over how and where our planet is going to be in the next
couple of decades, has been a significant debate to many. With the steady increase of fossil fuels
being released into our atmosphere, and the high cost that our planet is having to pay in order to
support and to sustain such an exponentially growing population, are we still surprised over the
consequences? Connecting everyone from one side of the world to the other, Global Warmingis a
global problem that includes everybody regardless of where you live in the world or how much
money you possess. It has also become a demanding task that requires the participation of every
human being, since everyone can ultimately still decrease their carbon footprint on the world.
Global warming is the observed overall statistical increase in the average temperature of the Earth s
atmosphere and oceans over the years, (Miller, 2006). Being one of the most important issues
facing the world today, this subject has become life or death for our planet. With the average
temperature increasing dramatically every year, consequences such as the greenhouse effect,
which is the outcome of large amounts of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by human
civilizations, has largely impacted ecosystems ranging all the way from the ocean and marine
life to even the most complex organisms, human beings. Acting as a positive feedback loop, a
lot of the things that we do, whether it s opening up a refrigerator that contain CFC s or even
just getting a plastic bag from a grocery store, are contributing to the weakening of our ozone
layer, and to the steady increase of greenhouse gases being released into the air. Plastic is
probably one of the most detrimental materials that has ever been manufactured. With the world
now using approximately six hundred billion pounds of plastic, plastic has become the familiar
cheap material that we all know and come across multiple times a day. Materials like the plastic
bag, zip lock bag, and plastic water bottles, have all been manufactured to be single use items that
are used and thrown away over and over again. Yet unlike paper litter, when plastic bags get into the
environment, they

Performance Enhancements In Sports Research Paper
Forms of performance enhancement have been filling the world of athletics since the beginning of
time. Humans, driven by their natural competitive instinct, have always craved the thrill of
winning. Morals become questioned, abilities become enhanced, records begin to be set and all
athletes want is more. Many believe that the severity of performance enhancing drugs in the world
of athletics is a fairly new concept. What they don t realize is that even as far back as 100 AD the
Roman Gladiators were finding different stimulants and hallucinogens to prevent fatigue and injury.
In fact, performance enhancements are not limited to just the humanathletes in competition either.
During the times of the incredible gladiators, they would feed trusted steeds a substance called
hydromel; an alcoholic beverage made from honey that would make them run even faster than
before. There s never been a time that gaining that extra edge hasn t been on the mind of our
beloved competitors.
It s no secret, people love a good show. For thousands of years people from near and far would
gather to watch incredible athletes exhibit their super human abilities. But why, as spectators, do we
find such entertainment in watching muscle ridden hulks of men throw around extreme amounts of
weight? Or why do we enjoy watching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

comes to mind, also being the item that makes the world go around is: Money. Money leads too

Many believe that the easiest way to fulfil the life long dream that so many of us possess to

Fourth Of July Research Paper
The Fourth of July
Every Summer, people in the United States celebrate the signing of the Declaration of
Independence, which legally separated the thirteen original colonies separate from the British
Empire. We celebrate on the Fourth of July, but the actual voting for the separation occurred on July

and the Committee of Five two more days to draft the document. The Declaration of Independence
was signed on the Fourth of July by 56 men who represented the 13 colonies. 2 future presidents,
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson signed it in addition to Benjamin Franklin. John Dickson, a

Example Of Overt Delinquency
The definitions of Juvenile delinquency may vary from societies to societies or even amidst
different countries laws but nevertheless they all refer to the same concept. The meaning of
juvenile delinquency according to criminologists refers to youngster of age boundaries between
12 to 20 years who have engaged themselves in any offence (World Youth Report, 2003). As per
World Youth Report (2003); sociologists consider any breach in any licit or civic norms, ranging
from insignificant felony to consequential public wrongs engaged by young people, as Juvenile
delinquency. Overt and covert are the two categories which delinquent behavior can be classified.

The Laramie Project, By Moses Kaufman Essay
Introduction
Moses Kaufman is the producer of the successful play The Laramie Project after a horrific
incident that occurred in Laramie. Members of the artistic group of Kaufman s, traveled to
Laramie to find out more about the horrific incidence. The main aim of the whole project was to
find the emotions, reactions, and reflections that the people of Laramie manifested concerning the
beating and subsequent death of a twenty three year old college student (Gale, 2016). A lot of
questions were raised concerning the death as people had different point of views. Some thought it
was a hate crime, others thought it was just a brutal assault or a form of robbery. Four hundred
interviews were conducted so as to come up with the reasons behind the brutal murder straight from
the town folks. The main issue was how homosexuality was defined in the crime. The Laramie
Project, questioned the rights of the LGBT+ group. For example, why were Lesbians, Gays,
Bisexuals, and Transgenders discriminated by the community and the society as a whole even
though their rights were constitutional?
Context
From the play, Matthew Shepard a college student at the University of Wyoming was tied up in a
cattle fence. The student was majoring in political science and was believed to be gay, and he
did not like hiding the fact that he is one. Matthew was free and open. In one cold night, in
October, Matthew was brutally beaten up in the head, robbed and later tied up on a fence and was

The Importance Of Being Earnest Analysis
The play, The Importance of Being Earnest written by Oscar Wilde, describes two main
protagonists living in 1890 s England, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff (Algy), who, for
the sake of love, both use the same name (Ernest) to conceal their true identity. Algy has a cousin
named Gwendolen Fairfax, whom Jack is in deep love with. On the other hand, Algy falls in
love with Jack s ward, who is Cecily Cardew. At first, everything goes well, until both Jack and
Algy end up together in the country, leading to a comedy of mistaken identities. The play uses
satire to ridicule the issues such as money, marriage, and social status during the Victorian Age.
The upper class society of the Victorian period can be exemplified by the characters to give us
knowledge and understanding of the play. One scene where Lady Bracknell disapproves of
Algernon s proposal to Cecily because she thinks that Cecily does not possess a lot of money nor
social status. As such, Wilde believes that the Upper class Victorian society should not take trivial
matters such as money, marriage, social status, and appearance seriously.
According to Wilde, Lady Bracknell disapproves Algernon s proposal to Cecily because she
thinks that Cecily is not nearly good enough for Algernon. This is evident by the line: Ah! A life
crowded with incident, I see; though perhaps somewhat too exciting for a young girl. I am not
myself in favour of premature experiences (Wilde). As Lady Bracknell is the quintessence of
society in the Victorian era, she believes that social status and wealth is of the utmost importance
and that marrying someone without money is intolerable. Jack, knowing that Lady Bracknell is a
materialistic person, persuades her sarcastically, Oh! About a hundred and thirty thousand pounds
in the Funds. That is all. Goodbye, Lady Bracknell. So pleased to have seen you . (Wilde) Lady
Bracknell changes her mind immediately after knowing that Cecily is wealthy and has large funds:
A moment, Mr. Worthing. A hundred and thirty thousand pounds! And in the Funds! Miss Cardew
seems to me a most attractive young lady, now that I look at her (Wilde). Lady Bracknell consents
the marriage of Algernon and Cecily because of Cecily s Wealth. This is

How Did Abraham Lincoln s Impact On Society
Abraham Lincoln
Traditional and new media effected the way citizens voted since the age of the telegraph. Invented
by Samuel Morse in the early 1800s, telegraphs transmitted electrical signals over a wire attached
with a code using the English alphabet across lines. One of the first presidents to use the telegraph
excessively was Abraham Lincoln. During that time, the telegraph was around for over 17 years
before Congress would finance Samuel Morse s telegraph. With the new technology and a telegraph
office in the War Department within distance of the White House, Lincoln would begin sending
over nine messages weekly. After Lincoln use of the telegraph, Andrew Johnson became the first

Satipose And Political Purpose In Animal Farm By George...
Orwell was beyond successful in writing Animal Farm and fusing political purpose and artistic
purpose into one whole. George Orwell is a well known English author known for his literary
criticism against politics while shaping his critics into art. He is well known for his books
Animal Farm and 1984 that are still talked about to this day. Orwell has stated, I write it because
there is some lie I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, and my initial
concern is to get a hearing. This has been stated in his piece Why I write. He is still relevant today
because his literature still has significance and can be applied to historical events that have
happened and that are still continuing to this day. Ultimately, Orwell has done a marvelous job at
stating his beliefs on political controversies while providing a fascinating story on the surface to
disguise his opinions.
George Orwell s essay Why I write is about him explaining why he started to write and what his
motivations were. Below the surface, he discusses how his life took him through ups and downs
and caused him to have certain beliefs he wanted to share. Orwell wrote this piece for others to
understand the deeper meaning and his dedication to writing. The authors audience is for aspiring
writers and people that read his books and are trying to achieve a deeper understanding of him.

International Economics And The Field Of International...
I would like to mention some courses that I have taken at Knox College that not only have
encouraged me to take up the particular field of study as a major, but have also fortified me to
volunteer and intern in the field of international development. These courses are: International
Economics (Manisha Pradhananga, Professor), Business Society (John Spittell, Professor)
Environmental Natural Resource Economics(Steve Cohn, Professor) and Environmental Ethics (Bill
Young, Professor). These particular courses had a great impact on my decision to pursue a major in
Economics and a double minor in International Relations Business.
In International Economics, I had written a research paper on low income nations and their
dependence on primary commodities for exports and its vulnerability to price shocks. I had carried
out my research only keeping applied economics in perspective, therefore, I could not really
understand as to why these low income countries, although having a wide variety of natural
resources readily available for production and consumption, still struggling to alleviate themselves
from poverty and poor health. The reality and the real life scenario of such situations was explained

I was assigned to write another research paper on greenhouse gas abatement options for third world
nations. The ideal solution that came up while working on the project was developed

Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception is a chapter in Theodor Adorno and Max
Horkheimer s book Dialectic of Enlightenment it goes onto discus the conflicts presented by the
culture industry. Adorno states that the culture industry is a main phenomenon of late capitalism,
encompassing all products from Hollywood films, to advertisements, and even extending to musical
compositions. Adorno is very deliberate in noting the term culture industry over mass culture this
was done to specifically distinguish, that it is not to be understood as something which
spontaneously stems from the masses themselves. Products of the culture economy take on the

The author goes on to explain that the public refrains from criticizing the media because they are
dependent upon it. They need the culture industry in order to achieve pleasure and satisfaction and
cannot imaging their lives without it. The industry preserves its power by presenting an ideal of the
good life as reality and through false conflicts that trade him for his real ones. The industry spreads
false values and establishes the individual s willingness to be a part of society and to coordinate his
interests with it. Adorno also states that the culture industry takes advantage of the weaker classes
by making its content shallow and widely appealing and thus demoting the value of culture
Everyone knows that they are helpless within the system, and ideology must take account for this
The main argument behind the article is that the commodification of culture is the commodification
of human awareness. The culture industry provides easy entertainment which is able to distract the
masses from the wrongs of a capitalist ruling order. It goes onto argue that the culture industry has
over taken reality and the way that it is experienced, where it completely shapes and conditions the
experiences we have creating an alternate reality of consumerism. Popular culture gives the allusion
of a distraction from our everyday lives, but in fact it causes those consuming to further dwell into

Egoism Vs Egoism
What motivates individuals to do the things they do well, it is based fundamentally on their
morality. Our moralities are the actions and beliefs we consider to be right or wrong. Our
everydaydecisionsare determined by these morals. Moralityrefers to a code of conduct that applies
to all who can understand it and can govern their behavior by it(Gert). An individuals morality is
shaped by the way they view his or her own interests and weigh it in comparison to the interests of
others. Those that value their own interests over others are known as egoist. Egoismis an ethical
theory that treats self interest as the foundation of morality. However, egoism is divided into
two,one known as ethical egoismand the other is psychological egoism. The two revolve around the
idea of self interest. These types of egoist value their own interests over others. However, many of
people have egotistic interior motives as helping others in the interest of our own.Humankind has
the natural tendencies to grow, develop, and be the best they can be is in respect to their interests.
After an individual discovers his or her own interests they learn what it takes to succeed and satisfy
their interests. Maslow defines human tendencyisto strive for growth, autonomy, identity and the
excellence of self actualization(Abraham Maslow). Individuals instinctively strive to become better
based on their interests. Therefore, as individuals, we naturally wish to excel or be exceptional, to

Futility Wilfred Owen
In the poem, Futility by Wilfred Owen, many language features were used to stir the readers
emotions.
Wilfred Owen uses the language feature of a metaphor to help stir the readers emotions in the
poem. The line, At home whispering of fields half sown is a metaphor for how often soldiers
lives are cut in half, it shows how these men s lives had potential that will never be fulfilled. The
seeds deserved a chance to grow, yet war took that chance away from them. A likely reason
Wilfred had chosen to use this technique is because it makes the readers think about the futility of
war. This metaphor also creates a sense of sadness within the reader as it makes a point of how
many young soldiers were killed in battle throughout the war.

Improvement Of Technology And Its Use Has Been The...
Improvement of technology and its use has been the foundation for American economics. Although
such innovation does create jobs, customs, and cultures that contribute to the American lifestyle, it
can also create pollution that harms the environment and brings about environmental injustice.
People focus on outcome effects of a certain project. Whether its main goal is for economic
gains, to help improve the way American people live, or even if it is harming the ecosystem in
any way, they will intervene. However, what people don t pay attention to is the tool that is being
used to accomplish such goals that can produce complications as it relates to the environment and
injustice that comes with the utilization of technology. This creates a selective exposure mentality
in the sense that if the tool being used has been here before the person was born or even if the
tool is used to support daily activities within the American household and lifestyle, then in no way
should it be harmful to humans or the environment. There must be a different way in which
American citizens can identify such potential dangers so that disaster can be avoided. One
approach is to have professionals in the related field expose such technologies that people believe
are helping them but instead are causing damage to the environment. As a previous low voltage

Analysis Of The Last Rung On The Ladder
In the short story, The Last Rung on the Ladder by Stephen King, the main characters are Katrina,
better known as Kitty, and Larry. Kitty is the younger sister, whose trust is mainly in her brother s
hands. While Larry is the older brother who loves his sister dearly but is more job/future focused.
The author describes both of these characters very well throughout the story. The author also does a
very thorough job at showing how the setting affects the plot of the story and how the climax
affects the story. One of the main things that Stephen King does to make this story so strong, is
using a great description of the setting, characters, and conflict.
In the story, The Last Rung on the Ladder , Stephen King does a great job of showing how the
setting impacts the characters, and how the setting affects the climax.
The barn. It was warm, filled with a pleasant mixed aroma of hay and fun and dung, and with the
mysterious chuckling, cooing sounds of the barn swallows high up in the third loft. (King14)
This quote is showing how Larry describes the barn being so warm and filled with smells, and
how it is so deeply mysterious. Later on in the story, this mysterious warm place turns into a
place of fear. The main characters, Kitty and Larry, are climbing up and old rickety ladder, and
shuffling a crossed a 12ft. long beam. Once over the safety of the hay, they jump down and land in
the soft, safeness of the hay. But after going up the ladder a certain amount of times, it

Sometimes to achieve total peace, one must engage in violence to bring tranquility to the world.

Some may think that this War on Terrorism has been a waste of time, however as the war drove on
the American military, along with a coalition of other countries, helped drive out the Talibanand
rebuild Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran (Tindall America A Narrative). Without America s aid,
the Taliban would still be plaguing the Middle East. Also the U.S. intervention helped keep the
peace throughout the rebellious countries. The quote stated in the opening paragraph by President
Obama means that U.S. intervention is the best option because it helps stop the threat of other
revolutions in the neighboring countries (Scott). With the presence of a bigger more powering
military looming in the distance then the rebellions and revolutions would be minimized because of
the fear of facing the superior force with inferior power.
Even though majority of America s interventions in other countries have been for the greater good,
America has gotten involved in places that they should not have gotten involved in. In the late
1800 s America had gone to war against Spain with no justification except for the fear of political
backfire. With the sinking of the Maine, America sought out retribution even after Spain denounced
that they had any part in the sinking of the naval ship. As a result of the war, America had

What Is The Theme Of Summer Love In Birnam Woods
The short story, Birnam Woods, by T.C. Boyle, revolves around a dysfunctional couple s journey
to survive in a harsh winter. While Keith struggles to earn a living as a substitute teacher, Nora
has a degree but does not care to find a job. Together they live in a shack without electricity, so
they try to find a new home. They become house sitters for a rich old couple. Later Nora proceeds
to find a job as a hostess at a restaurant. After Keith meets Steve at Nora s workplace, they discuss
Keith and Nora s relationship, which Keith reveals lacks passion. This discussion opens the door
for Steve to make a move on Nora. As Steve approaches Nora with a poem and Tequila, Nora
doesn t resist his charm. Dejected, Keith then leaves the house and finds a couple in their
bedroom, passionless like the winter. The scene makes Keith realize that when passion dies, so
does the relationship. In the end, Keith discovers that he and Nora have been living the winter
life, and Nora has moved on in search of another summer life. Boyle s story shows the bell curve
of a relationship with summer as the climax and winter as the low point. Therefore, Boyle tells the
reader to enjoy the young, summer love while it lasts, before winter comes.

devote more energy into research, monitoring and enforcement of laws in order to increase
scientific knowledge, monitor exploitation, protect and prevent degradation and damage to
species and their habitats. There are many reasons why the oceans should be conserved and
protected. For instance, at any given moment in time, more than 97% of the world s water
resides in oceans which means that they make up 99% of liveable space on earth6. The World s
oceans provide a sixth of the animal protein that people eat5. More than 8 million tonnes of
plastic are dumped into the oceans every year, more than 80 percent of marine plastic litter,
comes from land based sources, such as drink bottles and plastic packaging. The remainder comes
from sea based plastics, such as fishing gear that has been dropped or discarded9. This is not

The Origins Of Computer Science
The origins of computers date back to the mid 1900s. During the creation, the binary code of zeros
and ones was formulated as a basic foundation of what computers can run off of. This code was
used to communicate to a computer and manipulate it to assess whatever tasks need to be dealt
with. As more of these problems arose, the communication between computers and humans became
more complicated. Computers began growing more in fame and need. Computerengineers were
faced with a problem as to how to make the connection between man and machine less
complicated, thus computer languages were formed. They created a higher level language
system, one that was much easier for programmers to work with compared to the binary code .
Through the years, these languages developed with the complexity of computers themselves. The
world was beginning to see just how important computers were for everyday life, and the need
for the people who work with them were equally as needed. To justify the argument of the
computer science field increasing, we must first talk about the origin of computer science itself.
Before the 1840 s, no one was thinking about programming or rather the concept of, a program as
a series of instructions controlling the operation of a general purpose computer (Haigh). However,
according to Where Code Comes From: Architectures of Automatic Control from Babbage to Algol
by Thomas Haigh and Mark Priestley, Charles Babbage was the first to really tackle this

Character Analysis Of Emma s House, By George Knightley
The protagonist is called, Emma Woodhouse.
The first sentence of the novel describes her as a handsome, clever, and rich girl, with a
comfortable home and happy disposition , a sentence that I immediately associated with the
snobbish societies that were common in that period. That s why I wasn t looking forward to
reading the rest of the story. And my presumption was met in the first chapter where she only
seemed to care about herself. She seemed to be a classic example of a menefreghista as we say in
Italian, that means that she is a person with an uncaring or couldn t care less attitude.
I was really surprised when things took a turn real quick and it wasn t just a story about a spoilt,
rich girl, with rich girls problems anymore. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is important in the story because he serves as a model of good sense and is the only one who
openly critices Emma and points out all her flaws and foibles. Not because he is bitter or enjoys
making people feel down, but out of genuine concern and care for her. He therefor is my favorite
character. His unfailing honesty is tempered with tact and kindheartedness.
He has had some lapses of judgment and self control, but they were only caused by his
uncontrollable love for Emma. He immediately makes clear that he doesn t like Frank and
everyone knows Knightley just feels jealous and does not welcome the new rival. This jealousy
causes Knightley to behave very uncharacteristicly impulsive; he escapes to London to declare his
love to Emma. This loss of control just makes clear that he is just a normal human being with
feelings.
Frank is the typical smooth bad boy, girls like so much. He epitomizes attractiveness in speech,
manner, and appearance. A lot of people don t trust him, but everyone except Knightley is charmed
enough to indulge him. He really seems to be the manly version of Emma, that s probably why
they get along so

Kraft Heinz Wellness Program
The Kraft Heinz Company offers many benefits for its employees. The company uses these benefits
to help promote the health and wellness of the employees in the company. Eligible workers have
access to benefits such as retirement packages, insurance programs, flextime, healthcare benefits,
training programs, and coaching. Globally, facilities also offer specific benefits for different
geographic locations (Employee Healthand Wellness, 2015). Other benefits include maternity and
paternity leave, paid vacation and holidays, and the Employee Assistance Program (Kraft Heinz
Company Benefits, 2015).
The company provides a variety of wellness programs to appeal to many of their employees in all

The company uses a merit based pay structure to recognize employee performance. Yearly
evaluations of performance are conducted to rate employee s results of the year compared to
previously set goals. Kraft Heinz recognizes employees at every level for outstanding
performance. In 2014, over a thousand employees were promoted because of their high
performance and the value they added to the organization (Kraft Heinz, Careers , 2015). Merit
based pay is based on individual performance. This method of pay and raises creates a link
between rewards and the employee s performance throughout the year. A danger of merit based pay,
in organizations like Kraft Heinz Co., is that management might give merit based raises
/promotions on how they perceive the employee will perform, so they may over or under estimate
pay decisions (Judge Robbins, 2016, pp. 137). However, the end of the year assessments the
company conducts to review performance and set goals for the next year would help to reduce this

Big Brother s Language In The Book 1984 By George Orwell
The passage on pages 80 and 81 is significant because it shows how if Big Brother is able to make
everyone believe the most simple fact is different than what they know to be true, then he can
change any piece of information without opposition. By using the fear of what happens when
people go against Big Brother and the government, they can make people believe two plus two
equals five (80). Everyone knows two plus two equals four, it s one of the most basic facts and
can be proven on our fingers. If Big Brother announces that two plus two equals five, everyone
will be forced, through fear, to believe it to be true. Even though they can prove two plus two
equals equals four with their fingers, the fear Big Brother instills in them makes sure... Show more

To be able to control what the populous does, Big Brother has set up telescreens and cameras
everywhere in the non Prole parts of Oceania, specifically in people s homes, that allow him and
his government to watch all party members movements and words. This surveillance allowed
Big Brother to control the populous because everyone lived from habit that became instinct in
assumption that every sound you made was heard, and, except in darkness, every movement
scrutinized (3). By forcing everyone to live knowing that everything they did was being
watched, Big Brother was able to restrict the actions and conversations of the people. People tend
to act differently if they knew they were alone compared to if they knew they were being
watched. This is because when you are being watched, you feel the need to act more appropriate
and not do anything that could be considered weird. The reason the people of Oceania were to be
controlled to the point of seeming like sheep, was because of the fear that was instilled through the
Thought Police. Just being watched can partially control someone s actions due to them not wanting
to seem weird, but by placing an inescapable death penalty on anyone that acts up, Big Brother can
control them with their fear of death. This fear that

False Memory Syndrome And Cognitive Psychology
Since the early 90 s a large debate has divided many medical professionals in the psychology
realm over the relationship between recovered memory therapy and false memory syndrome.
Memory has been studied in several different areas to recognize how it compares not only to
others but also in certain situations and even as far as being replicated to fit to a person s
beliefs, feelings, and memory they ve have pieced together instead of reproduced (Lynn, Evans,
Laurence and Lilianfeld, 2015). False memory was coined in 1992 by a group of professionals
who noticed numerous adults were claiming to have been sexually abused as a child from their
parents after receiving therapy. The adults who claimed to have been sexually abused as

Teaching Methods Essay
1.Discuss the reasons for selecting the teaching methods used.
In the micro teach session delivered to my peers at college as part of an Assessment, I chose to use
the following teaching methods: * Initial assessment * Brainstorming * Group work *
Differentiation * Constructivist teaching.
Science is a practical subject that requires an academic approach. The methods used are to promote
active learning strategies that engage the student.
As I already teach at KS4, I assumed that this particular group would already be at the level of
teaching and learning in my class, although I did consider initial assessment methods in my
planning. I set out the learning objectives and learning outcomes so that each ... Show more content

One of the methods I used was to allow the students to share their knowledge with each other
through mind mapping and then through working together on a true /false questionnaire.
2.Critically discuss two of the teaching methods used and examine each one in terms of their
strengths and weaknesses.
The first method I would like to discuss is the constructivist approach an active way of building on
students knowledge, ensuring students use and apply the knowledge given. In my view this
method covers all the positive points for exploring a specific subject, by using the method of the
students building their own interpretations of the information given, as Petty explains: What does it
mean exactly to have a full grasp of a new topic, and to be able to use your learning successfully
even in new situations? (Petty 2004, p. 7), going on to explain the theory behind Bloom s
taxonomy, a hierarchy of learning and putting the attributes to learning in order. In simple terms,
the knowledge a student requires at the beginning is rather basic; then comprehending the
knowledge means that a student has been able to move on by understanding and explaining.
Once a student has comprehension they (with the help of a teacher) can apply that comprehension.
For example, during the micro teach session once I had given an overview of the heart, students
were able to complete a questionnaire. I could see from the answers that they had gained

Persuasive Essay On Technology And Technology
We live in the world of smart TVs, smart phones, smart cars, but are those technologies making
us smarter? Many people today are worried that technologies do more harm than good, and that
they change our brain for the worse. However, people have been coping with technologies for
decades. In fact, James Robert Flynn, a New Zealand intelligence researcher says that, Over the
past 100 years, Americans mean IQ has been on a slow but steady climb. The average person of
2012 had a higher IQ than 95 percent of the population had in 1900 (30). This statement leads us
to a thought that, perhaps, our modern technologies play a positive role in our intelligence.
Technology became very complex over the past couple of decades and all of us are using... Show

Parents might blame their children s memory and attention problems on video games. And they
can be right, but only if a child spends too much time over playing. The same can be said about
watching television. Too much of anything is bad for us, and therefore video games should not
be blamed for attention problems. In fact, one study from a Current Biology journal shows that
dyslexic children trained on action video games show significant improvements on basic
measures of both attention and reading ability, which shows that action games can increase our
attention to details and even be used as a treatment for dyslexic children (R282). Others say that
video games lead to violence. Susan Scutti, CNN reporter mentions a warning from American
Academy of Pediatrics in her article Do video games lead to violence? which states that Video
games should not use human or other living targets or award points for killing, because this
teaches children to associate pleasure and success with their ability to cause pain and suffering to
others (Scutti). However, there is not enough evidence to prove that violent games make children
more violent. As a matter of fact, Scutti also mentions Whitney DeCamp, an associate professor of
sociology at Western Michigan University who examined over six thousand eight graders in his
study and discovered that video games, no matter how bloody, did not predict violent

Juan De La Cierva s VTOL Aircraft (Gyroplane)
All good comes from above, as it was said in 1:17 of the Book of James. In this era in the history
of Man, recent innovations in avionic technology has allowed men to fly to distant lands, at
rates far greater than what was once feasible centuries ago. Granted, it is true that attempts were
made during the early 20th century on the creation of VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing)
aircraft by Juan de La Cierva of Spain, with a successful recorded flight in 1923. De La Cierva s
VTOL aircraft was known as Gyroplane. (Scientists and Friends) However, it was not until the
Second World War, did VTOL aircraft finally appear into its modern day incarnation. The Third

There was nothing left but to try the exorcist. (Catholic News Agency) The preceding article in
question goes off on a digression, subsequently discussing about a similar effort, but across the
entire country of Mexico, with the center of mass being the Cathedral within the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese of Guadalajara, presided over by His Eminence, Cardinal Juan Sandoval ГЌГ±iguez.
But still, the overall point of the article is this: Every bishop is the chief exorcist of his own
diocese. Anytime anyone with the authority uses his power against Satan, (sic) that is powerful.
Every priest and bishop has that power. To be fair, an exorcism from the skies above is a much
more important endeavor than a similar event that happened a few weeks ago in Ireland.
Nevertheless, it ties in to the overall point of this blogpost. A few weeks ago, The Irish Catholic
reported a certain Catholic priest by the name of Father John Cummins, an administrator at the
Cathedral of the Assumption in the Irish Catholic Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, who was joined
by three others parishioners, they devised an fundraiser that involved sky driving out of a plane
stationed at Clonbullogue Airfield. After garnering the necessary sponsorships from the rest of the
congregation and others, the four were able to collect at least an estimated €5,000. (The Irish

How Does Macleish Present My View Of Poetry
Out of all these poems Ars Poetica by Archibald Macleish is the poem that accurately expresses
what my view of poetry is, what it does, and how we should read it. The reason that this poem
represents what my view of poetry is, the way that Archibald is able to describe poetry in a way I
had never thought about before but a way that I am still fully able to understand. He explains how
poems should be able to stand on their own, that they shouldn t need words. What this choice says
about me is that when it comes to reading poetryI read it in a way that the poem should be what it is
trying to say. Ars Poetica expresses my view of poetry because it says, A poem should be palpable
and mute, meaning that a poem should be silent but it should

Comparing Atkins and Weight Watchers Diets Essay
Comparing Atkins and Weight Watchers Diets
Of the many diets on the market today, Atkins and Weight Watchers have a huge following. The
followers of these two diets must adopt very different eating plans. You must decide before going
on one of these, which advantages are you looking for and which disadvantages can you live with.
The Atkins diet works on the notion that weight gain is caused not by fat intake or food portions, but
the way our bodies break down carbohydrates (betterhealthusa.com). Carbohydrates will turn to fat
if not burned by the body. If your body does not get enough carbohydrates, it will use stored fat.
Atkins dieters are told not to eat carbohydrates in order to burn their stored fat, ... Show more

However, it is restrictive considering you are not allowed any breads or fruit. This, by default, cuts
out many nutrients you need, while increasing saturated fat intake. This lack of nutrients can lead
to osteoporosis and liver damage. Many Atkins dieters have noticed that their breath does not
smell good. This diet can also get boring because of the food restrictions. It can also be hard to
completely cut out carbs and this diet would be almost impossible for vegetarians. The Weight
Watchers diet works on the notion that if you eat fewer calories than your body burns, you will
lose weight. If you eat more calories than your body can burn, the extra calories will be stored as
fat, causing weight gain. This diet has some advantages and disadvantages. Unlike the Atkins diet,
Weight Watcher dieters find that their weight loss is much slower and steadier. This plan works in
a very different way. There is a points system that goes along with this diet.
Every food has a certain amount of points, and you must stay within the allocated range of points
per day. The range depends on your size, but an average person must stay between 18 25 points
per day. One apple has one point. You may eat anything you desire, as long as you don t go over
your points. You are told to keep a food tracker handy to count all your points. This can be time
consuming. There are also many pre prepared

  • 2. Primary Study Summary Primary Study Summary Introduction Hypothesis Previous to Cao, Brennan, Booth (2015), various studies have examined the relationship between acquisition of reading skills and neuronal activation. Despite the extensive evidence that there are dynamic changes in systems where adaptation takes place, it is still unknown to what extent the acquisition of fundamentally different languages results in differing brain networks. The current study proposes the hypothesis that learning to read leads to a growing divergence between different orthographies with increased experience. The legitimacy of the hypothesis is supported by the fact that alphabetic orthographies (i.e. English) use highly frequent mapping between letters (graphemes) and sounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (2015), the focus of the research expands on previous findings that there is a modulatory role of primary language in learning to read a secondary language. The phonological aspect is of particular concern as the researchers distinguish between addressed and assembled phonologies. Known as the dual route model of word learning, assembled phonology (i.e. grapheme to phoneme mapping) is typically utilized to read unfamiliar words whereas addressed phonology makes use of the relationship between the visual appearance of words and their sounds, and is consequently employed for familiar word reading. Due to the differences in orthography between English and Chinese, it is unsurprising that alphabetic languages emphasize assembled phonology while logographic languages, without letter phoneme mappings, rely on addressed phonology. As found in Cao, Brennan, Booth (2015), existing research indicates that cognitive and neural mechanisms can be shaped by native language. In Mei et al. (2015), the assimilation accomodation hypothesis essentially posits that these influentially developed neural mechanisms will inevitably affect the processing of a second language. The present study adopted a Korean artificial language training paradigm in order to examine the potential differences hypothesized to exist between native English speakers and native Chinese speakers. The recruits consisted of 42 native Chinese speakers and 43 native English speakers, neither of which had prior experience with the Korean language. Within both samples, participants were divided in terms of the type of training (i.e. addressed phonology vs assembled phonology). A total of 120 artificial language words were used. They were divided into two groups of stimuli in which some were trained words and others were not trained words (in order to detect the transfer of learning). Participants were asked to read each presented word with haste and precision in mind. Data was collected through an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Bootlegging and Al Capone Essay BOOTLEGGING In 1919, the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, this amendment made the consumption and sell of alcohol illegal. A group of people referred to as moral reformers felt that banning the sell and consumption of alcohol would better protect the lives of people as well as make them better (Rose). Businesses, such as industrial businesses, believed that it would better productivity if the workers could remain sober. The Volsted Act was passed shortly after the Eighteenth Amendment to make sure it was enforced since local authorities did not do such; there were only fifteen hundred agents to enforce the law and the act was also underfunded. Therefore, the Prohibition was not enforced well enough and the organized crime rates... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If (he) (broke) the law, (his) customers...some of the best people in Chicago, (were) as guilty as (he) (was). Alphonse Capone (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Capone saw nothing wrong with bootlegging and he often expressed it and showed his opposition towards the Prohibition Act. He stated that, Prohibition (had) made nothing but trouble . He is basically saying that he is not the problem with the crime in Chicago but the government is, for enforcing the law. He also expressed how, When (he) sell(s) liquor, it is bootlegging; when (his) patrons serve it on Lake Shore Drive, it is called hospitality. Now he is saying how he feels the government is discriminating against how alcohol is distributed. Capone is a criminal who s trying to put reason behind his illegal actions (BrainyQuote). MURDER Al Capone was notorious for his bootlegging and annihilating his competition; in order to do that, he had to kill them. Before Capone became the big time bootlegger/ murderer/ assassination coordinator, he had already taken a couple of lives. Capone had begun working for Torrio as an enforcer, bouncer, and bartender; he was in a bar fight that got him his scar and his nickname Scarface . Shortly after this incident, in 1919, in New York he was arrested because there were suspicions that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. If You Ain T First, It s The Only Thing Analysis It was in 1955, in a Sports Illustrated article just before the 1956 Rose Bowl, that Vince Lombardi was quoted saying, Sure, winning isn t everything; it s the only thing. Or maybe one can recall the 2006 film in which Will Ferrell s character Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR superstar, can be heard saying, If you ain t first, you re last. These two quotes are just a couple of prime examples when it comes to understanding the value of competition in our American culture. There is an assumption that only those who win can and will be successful. Understanding that the United States is a place that is supposedly ONE nation under God, yet is so driven by the assumption that you must always win at everything, begs the question; what is the significance... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can be noted in an article from 2016 in Psychology Today, that for decades, psychologists noticed something ironic among top athletic competitors. Setting aside those who were clearly happy having won first place, and looking at those who society would call losers (second and third), it was more often than not, those who came away with bronze medals appeared more accomplished and happier than those who won silver. The significance in this can be seen through a greater appreciation from those who barely won than from those who completely out performed their competition or fell somewhere in the middle. An article from the Huffington Post furthers this idea of happiness and winning. The article references research done for the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, in which they were researching this exact topic. The researchers wrote, Happy people savor little things that occur frequently, and unhappy people strive for intense experiences that rarely occur. Their study provides evidence that a difference in attitude greatly shapes how our culture views and understands ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Interactive Writing Process Analysis It has come to my understanding that you have mixed feelings about allowing interactive writing in the classroom. I m going to pose a few questions for you to think about. What single teaching technique can be used to aid in the development of phonological skills and help children attribute meaning to print? How can teachers create a lesson that permits whole group instruction and individual attention at the same time? How can the teacher practice skills without losing the engagement of the class? How can learning to read and write be enjoyable for students? The answer to these questions is interactive writing. Let s first start off with some background information on just what interactive writing is, its purpose and some uses of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first step in the interactive writing process is to provide active learning experiences. Because students share countless mutual experiences at school, there s a lot to choose from to write about during interactive writing. Reading and responding to a story the teacher has read is another way to share a learning experience. Lastly, allowing students to share personal experiences from their home life and community initiates a writing experience. Whatever way a teacher decides to start a writing experience, it s imperative that students are engaged in the process and that the teacher is pulling from students prior knowledge of an experience they shared together. Establishing the topic comes next in the interactive writing process. The topic for the interactive writing activity comes by way of the students joint common experience. Teachers facilitate a discussion with students around their shared experience as they form sentences they will later put on paper. During this time, the teacher emboldens students to express themselves in ways that implicitly capture their experience. Composing the text, or negotiating, follows establishing the topic in the interactive writing experience. During this step, the teachers and students decide how they will say what they want to write. The wording and phrasing is a coconstructuve effort between the teacher and students. As always, the teacher facilitates a discussion to develop a story or a sentence. Once a collective decision is made, the teacher has the students repeat what they will write numerous times before beginning to write. This is done so the students remember the sentences and can predict the following word when it comes time to write. Writing the text, or constructing, is the fourth step of the interactive writing process. While writing, the teacher and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Last Supper Research Paper Research Essay The Last Supper painted by Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the most famous and complex works of art in the world. A better understanding of this painting will enable people to understand Da Vinci s mind, and give people an insight into the Renaissance period. This painting was commissioned by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. Ludovico Sforza wanted this particular scene painted in the dining hall of the Convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. In 1495, Leonardo Da Vinci began work on The Last Supper and completed the painting in 1498. When painting this mural, Da Vinci did not take the traditional approach. Instead of making this a Fresco, an art technique of painting on a moist, plaster surface with colors ground ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first reason comes from the fact that Da Vinci created his own technique, and was able to make use of bright vibrant colors in his work. Another reason this painting is impressive is because of the level of emotion Da Vinci was able to convey on the faces of the Apostles. Other depictions of The Last Supper fall short of Da Vinci s painting because they can not express the intense emotion the way Da Vinci did. The Last Supper was not the first famous biblical scene , but it changed the biblical art scene because of the apostles specific expressions and the intimate feeling that they create. (Mussio 3). This includes the facial expressions that the apostles wear and body movements that they make. The final reason this painting is considered a masterpiece is because of the one point perspective Da Vinci achieves. In this painting, every element of the painting is centered around Jesus Christ. This incredible one point perspective was achieved by Da Vinci when he hammered a nail into the wall, then tied a string to it to make marks that helped guide his hands (Puchko 2). The revolutionary one point perspective, new technique Da Vinci uses, and incredible portrayal of emotions makes this painting a marvel of the Renaissance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Papua is a country which occupies the eastern half of New Guinea and is not a very well explored country, geographically, or culturally. A small tribe of about 3000 people occupies a remote and rural part of the southeastern side of the island and they are known as the Korowaitribe. The Korowai people were discovered in Papua New Guineain 1974. This tribe along with many other tribes in Papua New Guineaexperience little to no contact with other tribes or outsiders. Wooden barriers around the treehouses protect children. Yes, the Korowai people have practiced cannibalism, according to anthropologists. Emily Payne, a publisher in the Daily Mail, says anthropologists suspect that cannibalism is no longer practiced by the Korowai clans, despite reports of it as recently as 2006 (Payne, 2015). A reporter for the Smithsonian magazine named, Paul Raffaele, visited the Korowai tribe in New Guinea to find the truth about their cannibalism. He reported that, today the Korowai are among the very few tribes believed to eat human flesh. They live about 100 miles inland from the Arafura Sea, which is where Michael Rockefeller, a son of then New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared in 1961 while collecting artifacts from another Papuan tribe; his body was never found. • 9. Analysis Of The Circumplex Model In On Golden Pond The Circumplex Model: Adaptability and Flexibility Throughout On Golden Pond, it is apparent that Chelsea, Norman, and Ethel are rigidly enmeshed. According to Olson s circumplex model, rigidly enmeshed families have authoritarian leadership, strict discipline, roles rarely change, there is too little change. Additionally, enmeshment in families is illustrated by very high closeness, very high loyalty, high dependency, and a lack of individuality (Sanders Bell, 2011). Although Chelsea is distant with her family in the number of visits it is an artificial distance of time and space. They are strongly emotionally entangled as demonstrated through the ability of the family to emotionally affect one and other. Slightly like the characters in On Golden Pond, the family in Stepmom appear to be chaotically enmeshed. The circumplex model claims families who are chaotic present with a lack of leadership, erratic discipline, dramatic role shifts, and too much change (Sanders Bell, 2011). Chaos is present in the structure of the two living environments of the children: one environment is structured and the other one is disorderly. This leads to confusion for the children because the system lacks consistency. Enmeshment is personified through the children s emotional fusion with their mother. When Jackie is upset with Isabel, the children are upset with Isabel. The children and the mother s emotions are intertwined. On the other hand, Rita slightly contrasts the two families above as she appears to be rigidly disengaged instead of enmeshed. Rita and Denny are not intimately close. This is illustrated as Rita responds to a question by saying, loyalty? I [have] you know, I [have] tried to explain it to my husband ... I think he [is] thick (Gilbert, 1983). Rita s family lacks the flexibility to change. People get married and have kids. There is no self exploration, enlightenment, and adaptability is absent. The Concrete Content and Abstract Process Norman characterized several content and process issues throughout On Golden Pond. The first part of the movie exposes Norman s fixation on his age and pending death. From his confrontation with the kids, while refueling his boat to his efforts about getting a job, ... Thomas Hobbes And The Social Contract Thomas Hobbes (1588 1679), an English philosopher published the work, Leviathan, which proposed the concept of the social contract, in which societal assimilation mandates submission to authoritarian rule, with a relinquishment of certain rights, in return for protection and aid. Hobbes offered a foundational premise for benefits that otherwise might be absent, if not for societal constructs. His principles influenced classic criminology in the principles of punishment, due process, rationality, and human rights. The Bill of Rights in the US constitution has several concepts influenced, some believe, by his writings. (Cesare Beccaria, 2017)Jeremy Bentham, author of Introduction to the Principles of Moral and Legislation , built on Cesare statement that punish should fit the crime , by asserting that the hedonistic nature of man requires that the pain or punishment of committing the crime outweigh the pleasure or reward obtained from committing the crime (Schmalleger, 2010). Although the famous modern artist Marc Chagall is not only known as a Jewish artist, his background is the vehicle through which he sees the world and becomes the language of his universally valid art. Chagall once remarked in the Yiddish literary journal Shtrom in 1922 as Leaves from My Notebook : If I were not a Jew... I would not have been an artist, or I would be a different artist altogether. Essay on Pro Salary Cap Pro Salary CapAccording to Dan Oleary, Since baseball is the only major sport without a salary cap, and with the way baseball s big spending teams throw around money, having a different winner each year seems to defy logic (OLeary). A salary cap is issued in every professional sport s franchise, excluding Major League Baseball. With no salary cap, one club can dominate it s competition on money alone. The New York Yankees spend the most money on it s players each year (Goldman). It is no coincidence that they have won the most World Series of any other club in baseball history (Wikipedia World Series). Not only have they won the most world championships, but they are a consistent contender for the American League title year after... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Yankees have always been a powerful team regardless of the money . According to Wikipedia, The New York Yankees signed Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox after the 1919 season, appeared in their first World Series two years later in 1921, and became frequent participants thereafter (Wikipedia World Series). Between 1947 and 1964 the New York Yankees won the world series fifteen times in just eighteen years (Wikipedia World Series). The dynasty was in it s prime during that time. The Yankees have won the series a total of twenty seven times, most recently just last year in 2009 (Wikipedia World Series). They have also have forty world series appearances, the closest in comparison to baseball s favorite team is the St. Louis Cardinals with seventeen appearances. When a team has dominated the rest by over twice the appearances in the World Series, something is wrong. The purpose of the salary cap would not only be to stimulate competition in both the National and American leagues, but to give the spotlight to other teams for a change. In the end, if a salary cap is not issued, these results will continue and baseball will eventually fail. A lot of controversy regarding those opposed to the idea of a salary cap in professional baseball is the luxury ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These computing distributed systems are often characterized by a variety of resources that may or may not be coupled with specific platforms or environments. All these topics challenge today researchers, due to the strong dynamic behaviour of the user communities and of resource collections they use. D. In this paper, with the help of the advanced automation and information technologies, a new hydraulic regulation method was proposed to achieve on site hydraulic balance for the district heating systems with distributed variable speed pumps configuration. The proposed method was comprised of a new hydraulic model, which was developed to adapt the distributed variable speed pumps configuration, and a calibration model with genetic algorithm. By carrying out the proposed method step by step, the flow rates of all distributed pumps can be progressively adjusted to their designated values. A hypothetic district heating system with 2 heat sources and 10 substations was taken as a case study to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method. Two scenarios were investigated respectively. In Scenario I, the flow rate of one substation varied according to its heat demand and the flow rates of other substations maintained their original values. And in Scenario II, the flow rates of all substations varied synchronously with the same relative rate. The results of the both scenarios indicated that all pumps could be properly adjusted to their designated flow rates by the proposed method with a high frequency adjustment resolution as 0.001 Hz. H. Thomas Parsons Mrs. Anderson Composition English 101 12/5/16 Guns Are Needed in America The Constitution of the United States gives the reason why Americans can own guns; A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (Amendment II). The Second Amendment of the Constitution was ratified on December 15, 1791 because the Founding Fathers of the United States of America understood that guns were necessary for hunting, protection, and military involvement. The Founding Fathers understood that life apart from guns would be virtually impossible. Today, guns are necessary for the same reasons that they were necessary 225 years ago, but some things must be done to make guns more safe; in fact, many of the problems that guns are related to, can be solved. Many Americans believe that guns are no longer necessary and that they create more harm than good. These people believe that guns should be banned. The banning of guns in America would not stop crime or even reduce it; instead, that proposal would have a negative effect on crime rates, as well as a negative effect on many other things in America. Guns have always existed in America; guns actually existed before the United States of America was established. According to 2014 statistics, around three hundred million guns are in America, and 31% of American households own one or more guns (Alpers et al). Banning guns would not only have ... • 16. Causes And Consequences Of Global Warming The Global Issue Over the years, the increasing concern over how and where our planet is going to be in the next couple of decades, has been a significant debate to many. With the steady increase of fossil fuels being released into our atmosphere, and the high cost that our planet is having to pay in order to support and to sustain such an exponentially growing population, are we still surprised over the consequences? Connecting everyone from one side of the world to the other, Global Warmingis a global problem that includes everybody regardless of where you live in the world or how much money you possess. It has also become a demanding task that requires the participation of every human being, since everyone can ultimately still decrease their carbon footprint on the world. Global warming is the observed overall statistical increase in the average temperature of the Earth s atmosphere and oceans over the years, (Miller, 2006). Being one of the most important issues facing the world today, this subject has become life or death for our planet. With the average temperature increasing dramatically every year, consequences such as the greenhouse effect, which is the outcome of large amounts of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by human civilizations, has largely impacted ecosystems ranging all the way from the ocean and marine life to even the most complex organisms, human beings. Acting as a positive feedback loop, a lot of the things that we do, whether it s opening up a refrigerator that contain CFC s or even just getting a plastic bag from a grocery store, are contributing to the weakening of our ozone layer, and to the steady increase of greenhouse gases being released into the air. Plastic is probably one of the most detrimental materials that has ever been manufactured. With the world now using approximately six hundred billion pounds of plastic, plastic has become the familiar cheap material that we all know and come across multiple times a day. Materials like the plastic bag, zip lock bag, and plastic water bottles, have all been manufactured to be single use items that are used and thrown away over and over again. Yet unlike paper litter, when plastic bags get into the environment, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Humans, driven by their natural competitive instinct, have always craved the thrill of winning. Morals become questioned, abilities become enhanced, records begin to be set and all athletes want is more. Many believe that the severity of performance enhancing drugs in the world of athletics is a fairly new concept. What they don t realize is that even as far back as 100 AD the Roman Gladiators were finding different stimulants and hallucinogens to prevent fatigue and injury. In fact, performance enhancements are not limited to just the humanathletes in competition either. During the times of the incredible gladiators, they would feed trusted steeds a substance called hydromel; an alcoholic beverage made from honey that would make them run even faster than before. There s never been a time that gaining that extra edge hasn t been on the mind of our beloved competitors. It s no secret, people love a good show. Members of the artistic group of Kaufman s, traveled to Laramie to find out more about the horrific incidence. The main aim of the whole project was to find the emotions, reactions, and reflections that the people of Laramie manifested concerning the beating and subsequent death of a twenty three year old college student (Gale, 2016). A lot of questions were raised concerning the death as people had different point of views. Some thought it was a hate crime, others thought it was just a brutal assault or a form of robbery. Four hundred interviews were conducted so as to come up with the reasons behind the brutal murder straight from the town folks. The main issue was how homosexuality was defined in the crime. The Laramie Project, questioned the rights of the LGBT+ group. For example, why were Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgenders discriminated by the community and the society as a whole even though their rights were constitutional? Context From the play, Matthew Shepard a college student at the University of Wyoming was tied up in a cattle fence. The student was majoring in political science and was believed to be gay, and he did not like hiding the fact that he is one. Matthew was free and open. • 23. The Importance Of Being Earnest Analysis The play, The Importance of Being Earnest written by Oscar Wilde, describes two main protagonists living in 1890 s England, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff (Algy), who, for the sake of love, both use the same name (Ernest) to conceal their true identity. Algy has a cousin named Gwendolen Fairfax, whom Jack is in deep love with. On the other hand, Algy falls in love with Jack s ward, who is Cecily Cardew. At first, everything goes well, until both Jack and Algy end up together in the country, leading to a comedy of mistaken identities. The play uses satire to ridicule the issues such as money, marriage, and social status during the Victorian Age. The upper class society of the Victorian period can be exemplified by the characters to give us knowledge and understanding of the play. One scene where Lady Bracknell disapproves of Algernon s proposal to Cecily because she thinks that Cecily does not possess a lot of money nor social status. As such, Wilde believes that the Upper class Victorian society should not take trivial matters such as money, marriage, social status, and appearance seriously. According to Wilde, Lady Bracknell disapproves Algernon s proposal to Cecily because she thinks that Cecily is not nearly good enough for Algernon. This is evident by the line: Ah! A life crowded with incident, I see; though perhaps somewhat too exciting for a young girl. I am not myself in favour of premature experiences (Wilde). As Lady Bracknell is the quintessence of society in the Victorian era, she believes that social status and wealth is of the utmost importance and that marrying someone without money is intolerable. Jack, knowing that Lady Bracknell is a materialistic person, persuades her sarcastically, Oh! About a hundred and thirty thousand pounds in the Funds. That is all. Goodbye, Lady Bracknell. So pleased to have seen you . (Wilde) Lady Bracknell changes her mind immediately after knowing that Cecily is wealthy and has large funds: A moment, Mr. Worthing. Wilfred Owen uses the language feature of a metaphor to help stir the readers emotions in the poem. The line, At home whispering of fields half sown is a metaphor for how often soldiers lives are cut in half, it shows how these men s lives had potential that will never be fulfilled. The seeds deserved a chance to grow, yet war took that chance away from them. A likely reason Wilfred had chosen to use this technique is because it makes the readers think about the futility of war. This metaphor also creates a sense of sadness within the reader as it makes a point of how many young soldiers were killed in battle throughout the war. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although such innovation does create jobs, customs, and cultures that contribute to the American lifestyle, it can also create pollution that harms the environment and brings about environmental injustice. People focus on outcome effects of a certain project. Whether its main goal is for economic gains, to help improve the way American people live, or even if it is harming the ecosystem in any way, they will intervene. However, what people don t pay attention to is the tool that is being used to accomplish such goals that can produce complications as it relates to the environment and injustice that comes with the utilization of technology. This creates a selective exposure mentality in the sense that if the tool being used has been here before the person was born or even if the tool is used to support daily activities within the American household and lifestyle, then in no way should it be harmful to humans or the environment. There must be a different way in which American citizens can identify such potential dangers so that disaster can be avoided. One approach is to have professionals in the related field expose such technologies that people believe are helping them but instead are causing damage to the environment. • 36. Analysis Of The Last Rung On The Ladder In the short story, The Last Rung on the Ladder by Stephen King, the main characters are Katrina, better known as Kitty, and Larry. Kitty is the younger sister, whose trust is mainly in her brother s hands. While Larry is the older brother who loves his sister dearly but is more job/future focused. The author describes both of these characters very well throughout the story. The author also does a very thorough job at showing how the setting affects the plot of the story and how the climax affects the story. One of the main things that Stephen King does to make this story so strong, is using a great description of the setting, characters, and conflict. In the story, The Last Rung on the Ladder , Stephen King does a great job of showing how the setting impacts the characters, and how the setting affects the climax. The barn. It was warm, filled with a pleasant mixed aroma of hay and fun and dung, and with the mysterious chuckling, cooing sounds of the barn swallows high up in the third loft. (King14) This quote is showing how Larry describes the barn being so warm and filled with smells, and how it is so deeply mysterious. Later on in the story, this mysterious warm place turns into a place of fear. The main characters, Kitty and Larry, are climbing up and old rickety ladder, and shuffling a crossed a 12ft. long beam. President Barack Obama once said the more and more, we all confront difficult questions about how to prevent the slaughter of civilians by their own government, or to stop a civil war whose violence and suffering can engulf an entire region (Scott U.S. Intervention). Sometimes to achieve total peace, one must engage in violence to bring tranquility to the world. The quote stated in the opening paragraph by President Obama means that U.S. intervention is the best option because it helps stop the threat of other revolutions in the neighboring countries (Scott). With the presence of a bigger more powering military looming in the distance then the rebellions and revolutions would be minimized because of the fear of facing the superior force with inferior power. They become house sitters for a rich old couple. Later Nora proceeds to find a job as a hostess at a restaurant. The Importance Of Marine Conservation Sophie Huggins The role of Marine Protected Areas (MPA s) and why marine conservation is important for saving the ocean for current and future generations. From the air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, the need for constant medical advances, and to the products that keep us warm, safe, and entertained all these can come from or be transported by the oceans for human society5. As the oceans cover a large expanse of the earth s surface and are huge ecosystems, our security, economy and survival all require healthy oceans. Whether we live near the coast or far from it, whether we consume seafood or not, life depends on the marine ecosystem. We need to devote more energy into research, monitoring and enforcement of laws in order to increase scientific knowledge, monitor exploitation, protect and prevent degradation and damage to species and their habitats. There are many reasons why the oceans should be conserved and protected. For instance, at any given moment in time, more than 97% of the world s water resides in oceans which means that they make up 99% of liveable space on earth6. The World s oceans provide a sixth of the animal protein that people eat5. More than 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the oceans every year, more than 80 percent of marine plastic litter, comes from land based sources, such as drink bottles and plastic packaging. • 41. The Origins Of Computer Science The origins of computers date back to the mid 1900s. During the creation, the binary code of zeros and ones was formulated as a basic foundation of what computers can run off of. This code was used to communicate to a computer and manipulate it to assess whatever tasks need to be dealt with. As more of these problems arose, the communication between computers and humans became more complicated. Computers began growing more in fame and need. Computerengineers were faced with a problem as to how to make the connection between man and machine less complicated, thus computer languages were formed. They created a higher level language system, one that was much easier for programmers to work with compared to the binary code . Through the years, these languages developed with the complexity of computers themselves. The world was beginning to see just how important computers were for everyday life, and the need for the people who work with them were equally as needed. To justify the argument of the computer science field increasing, we must first talk about the origin of computer science itself. Before the 1840 s, no one was thinking about programming or rather the concept of, a program as a series of instructions controlling the operation of a general purpose computer (Haigh). However, according to Where Code Comes From: Architectures of Automatic Control from Babbage to Algol by Thomas Haigh and Mark Priestley, Charles Babbage was the first to really tackle this programming ... By using the fear of what happens when people go against Big Brother and the government, they can make people believe two plus two equals five (80). The first method I would like to discuss is the constructivist approach an active way of building on students knowledge, ensuring students use and apply the knowledge given. In my view this method covers all the positive points for exploring a specific subject, by using the method of the students building their own interpretations of the information given, as Petty explains: What does it mean exactly to have a full grasp of a new topic, and to be able to use your learning successfully even in new situations? In fact, one study from a Current Biology journal shows that dyslexic children trained on action video games show significant improvements on basic measures of both attention and reading ability, which shows that action games can increase our attention to details and even be used as a treatment for dyslexic children (R282).
