Upon first reading the novel, one may find it difficult to understand Alex s slang heavy language.
This language, known as Nadsat, represents a Russian influence in Alex s society. Burgess was
able to hear the language spoken first hand upon traveling to the Soviet Union. There, he was able
to refine a simple yet plausible Slavic vocabulary... to revise and complete A Clockwork Orange
(Biswell 238). Nadsat is mainly spoken by teen troublemakers, such as Alex, because it cannot
be understood by mainstream society. The language, in a way, also encourages violence with
unique derogatory terms regarding women and rape (Goh 1). Upon understanding the language
spoken by Alex, one can further understand his actions and the way in which he is influenced by
his surroundings and the rest of society. Goh continues to explain how the use of language in this
novel makes a statement about the individual s (Alex s) struggle... for authenticity under
dystopian conditions of social control (1). This so called social control is consistent with what
Burgess may have seen in the Soviet Union and presents a motive for the way he portrayed the
government in the novel. As Alex speaks, the reader can infer that he has been given no choice
but to become the vicious criminal that he is. This, in turn, makes the reader feel a certain
sympathy towards him despite the despicable nature of his crimes. Also creating a unique theme
of sympathy is the use of Alex as a first person narrator. As a first person narrator, one can see Alex
s innermost thoughts and experience life as he lives it. Alex often describes his crimes in a

W.E.B. Du Bois lived from February 23rd, 1868 to August 27th, 1963 which is when he passed
away in Accra, Ghana. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a European
American town. Due to this type of environment, Du Bois identified himself as a mulatto and
surprisingly enough, attended schools with whites and was supported by his white teachers. In
1885, he and his family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Du Bois attended Fisk University
and earned his bachelor s degree, along with attending Harvard and receiving a master s degree.
Ten years after the move to Nashville, Du Bois was the first African American to earn a Ph.D.
from Harvard. During his attendance at Harvard, Du Bois studied abroad at the University of
Berlin. The year of 1897 was the same year that Du Bois became a professor at Atlanta University.
In 1899, which was only two years later, Du Bois published the first case study of an African
American community, The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study. Coincidentally, DuBois publicly

Du Bois lived from February 23rd, 1868 to August 27th, 1963 which is when he passed away in Accra, Ghana. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a European American town. Due to this type of environment, Du Bois identified himself as a mulatto and surprisingly enough, attended schools with whites and was supported by his white teachers. In 1885, he and his family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Du Bois attended Fisk University and earned his bachelor s degree, along with attending Harvard and receiving a master s degree. Ten years after the move to Nashville, Du Bois was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. During his attendance at Harvard, Du Bois studied abroad at the University of Berlin. The year of 1897 was the same year that Du Bois became a professor at Atlanta University.
