I had figured that it had not moved or deleted itself so I went back online to redownload the file.
Once online and on the website in which the correct file was located, I had begun to search for
the file again. After searching for nearly 30 seconds, the browser had suddenly closed and left
me staring blankly at the desktop. About 5 seconds had passed and it mysteriously opened back
up but this time on an unfamiliar webpage; 30 seconds passing again until I was back staring at
the desktop for another 5 seconds. This process went on for around a minute before I had decided
to restart the computer. Once the computer had restarted and everything was running as normal
again, it was time to relaunch the browser and download the proper file. The browser launched
with no problem at all and I was able to successfully navigate to the correct website once again
and was able to begin searching. Once again, after so long of skimming the page for the file, the
browser shut down without a notice and restarted, opening to the same unknown website as
before. The next day my parents needed to use the computer and discovered the problem.
Immediately they had known it was my fault and put me in charge of removing the virus.
Without any clue as to how to remove malware from a computer, my first thought was to go to
YouTube and search for a generic video of how to clean a computer of viruses. Cluelessly I
followed the instructions of the video and opened critical file systems

The Professor And The Madman Analysis
Simon Winchester unravels the complex mystery of the Oxford English Dictionary and its
contributors in his book, The Professor and the Madman. Already a unique piece of literary
accomplishments, the OED is even more set apart from the rest by its unusual history. Winchester
explores the life of one of its most prominent benefactor and his bizarre fingerprint he made on
the creation of the first complete dictionary. William Chester Minor grew up in the British colony
on the coast of India in Ceylon. At an early age Minor grew up like any healthy, normal boy
would; until he began his process into adulthood. Minor was an abnormally gentle young boy;
where most young teenagers fought and wrestled, Minor read books and painted. The pubescent
Minor developed strange fantasies for the native women who lived on the island. These were the

Frequently he complained of pygmies climbing into his room through the baseboards and
whispering into his ears. As a result, he coated the floor of his bedroom with a white powder to
see the footprints of the tiny intruders. Minor was disgusted by himself, as well as the dreams, and
ultimately mutilates his body and removes his manhood. During the forty four years he stayed at
the asylum in England, word reached him of the great creation of the OED. The director of the
lexicographic team, James Murray, sent letters to find candidates that ,which in return, would find
compelling words and definitions to include in the dictionary. Minor was ecstatic to apply for such
a demanding position. Corresponding with the team of lexicographers, Minor s mental condition
seemed to be relieved as he had a task at hand. Monthly, he would send in at least one thousand slips
with words and definitions to be checked. With sending in so many slips, Minor contributed to
more than ten thousand words and definitions and quotations in the

Telling It Like It Is Essay
Telling It Like It Is
My country, right or wrong, is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate
case. It is like saying, My mother, drunk or sober. G. K. Chesterton, The Defendant
These are indeed desperate times.
On September 11, 2001, America witnessed the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history. Grief
stricken, angry, and shocked, people from all over America came together in the face of tragedy
and solidly affirmed their pride in the U.S.A. The outpouring of patriotism that resulted from this
tragedy was astonishing. Our country came together: specific agendas were swept aside in favor of
partisanship and overwhelming support for our leaders, for our institutions, for our democracy. ...

For example: in the immediate wake of September 11th, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer
requested that the press limit its details on Presidential security and U.S. intelligence. He asked the
media to refrain from printing advance notice of the president s schedule...and... how U.S.
intelligence gets its info, like saying it came from phone intercepts or satellites. He also asked that
they not take any pictures of White House security. The media largely agreed, in part because the
request seemed reasonable, and in part because of the patriotic fever sweeping the nation. One news
journalist, justifying the sensibility in restricting information, commented Nobody wants to see the
president hurt. 1
Historically, First Amendment rights have been highly disputed in cases of national security. In
1971, the right to publish disputed information was affirmed in the landmark Pentagon Papers case.
A former Defense Department employee, Daniel Ellsberg, stole a copy of a document entitled
History of U.S. Decision Making Process on Vietnam Policy, better known as the Pentagon Papers.
The documents contained evidence on the military s bungled handling of the Vietnam War .
Ellsberg leaked the copy to the New York Times and the Washington Post, and the Times began
printing articles referring to the papers. The Nixon administration quickly ordered the Times to
cease printing, arguing that publishing

Analysis Of The Movie Bird
On August 29th, 1920, Charlie YardBird Parker landed in this world and 34 years later he flew
away. Within those 34 years, music was eternally influenced by Bird, and this influence
continues to be celebrated all around the world. In 1988, Clint Eastwood and Joel Oliansky
worked together to create a documentary titled Bird based on Charlie Parker s life. There are
many story telling techniques used within this film that aid in making it an extremely brilliant
motion picture. Bird is very accurate in portraying the reality of Charlie Parker s life, and this
accuracy is important because it will help to present and therefore preserve his legacy. A legacy that
will intrigue and inspire musicians forevermore.
There are many story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Movie critic for the Chicago Sun Times Roger Ebert explains this scene, It shows him touring
the West Coast and hearing some simple truths one night from Gillespie, who told him that the
difference between them was that Diz took care of business, and Charlie took care of screwing
up. Gillespie was not a heavy drinker or an avid drug user, unlike Charlie. In that way these two
musical legends were complete opposites. Because Bird focuses on this contrasting relationship,
we are given a clearer idea of who Parker was.
Included in the aspects of Bird that make it such a great film is the outstanding acting performance
by Forest Whitaker, who played Charlie Parker, and Diane Venora who played Chan Richardson.
Some critics believe that Bird was a bit too scattered, but was held together smoothly because of
Forest Whitaker s acting. Forest Whitaker s brilliance is the force that holds the scattered pieces of
Bird together. Only rarely in movies do characters achieve this sort of palpability, and then only
when presented to us by a remarkable performer. And this is a remarkable performer giving a
gentle, exuberant, charismatic performance, proclaims Washington Post Staff Writer Hal Hinson.
With such pressure to portray the center focus of the film, Whitaker truly delivers an excellent
representation of the mysterious musical genius many of us have gotten to know through
recordings. Diane Venora s performance

Relationship Between Religion And Religion
The Relationship Between Religion and Science
Today, we are living in the time in which every aspect of life is influenced by some form of
science. From the scientific revolution of the 17th century through present day, scientists have
grown continuously. The impact of science is particularly powerful on traditional religious beliefs.
Religion is the belief in the supernatural, the invisible, the sacred, the visually receptive, and the
illogical. The belief is many fold, depending on the historical period, geography, culture, and
dependent on the content of each religion. It is operated by many rituals depending on the different
religious community. From the Latin religion meaning respect for the sacred, divine reverence or
duty, the link between man and the divine, people would live and survive these ways with the
beliefs of the supernatural powers in which would help people, sometimes synonymous with belief,
often defined as spirituality to believe in the supernatural, the sacred or the divine, as well as the
ethics, rituals, customs, and institutions associated with these beliefs. Basic notions of religion
divide the world into two parts: divine and mundane. Tranquility is normal in human life, and the
divine is supernatural. In the face of the divine, people use rituals to show respect and worship
and that is the basis of religion. In the most general sense, there is a view that defines religion as
the result of all the answers to explain the origin and

Volkswagen Emission Scandal
VW Emission Scandal
In today s society we often come to many debates on several issues that go on in our world today.
Recently there was an ethical debate on whether or not it is ethical to release vehicles with
software that defeats emission testing by the EPA. Volkswagen is being accused of using illegal
software designed to hide emissions during testing by installing cars with a software. The EPA
accused Volkswagenof using the device in nearly over a half a million cars (Davenport). The cars
are reportedly to have been installed with a software that had the ability to turn off the emissions
controls when driving normally and turns them on when the vehicle is undergoing an emissions
test. With all of these assumptions of Volkswagen cheating the emissions testing does that question
their ethical corporate responsibility?
It s shocking that the software engineers of Volkswagen overlooked and neglected their corporate

Losing a Language Explication Essay
W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for Losing a Language in the title, hinting at the lament like
characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a
hidden meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title
suggests: languageand words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic
and sad tone to emphasize the lossand quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple
diction. He carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and
does not stray from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist
throughout the piece but to become the dominant thought... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A second conflict introduced in the first couplet is the gap between the old and the young due to
the loss or change of language. The speaker states that the old still remember and contrasts this
with the young, who have fewer words. In the fifth couplet, we see a similar situation with
parents and children. The speaker gives us two ends of a spectrum to demonstrate the distance
that the change in language has created. We see a physical representation of this with the line,
farther and farther away. The gap is also represented in the sixth and ninth couplets, particularly
in the lines we are wrong and dark / in the eyes of the new owners. By referring to one side as we
and the other as them, new owners, or somebody, we can see two sides and that what was once
familiar to the speaker is now replaced by something foreign (line 21) and an us vs. them gap is
formed. Because the speaker is direct and clear, we are able to recognize the nostalgic tone
simply because of what the speaker is explicitly telling us. However, the structure of the poem
also contributes to the tone. There are no punctuations throughout the entire poem, yet we still
read it slow enough to create a dramatic and sad mood. The poem is divided into fourteen
couplets, each with a substantial gap between them. At the end of a couplet, we are forced to slow
down and fully pause before moving on to a new section. In addition, most of the lines are complete

Victims Of Criminal Activity
Every year, thousands of immigrants are victims of criminal activity. Significant factors that
contribute to this violence, never to be reported are language barrier, fear of deportation, cultural
differences, and fears of the unfamiliar. In 2000 the Congress passed a law known as the Victims
of Trafficking and Violence Prevention Act. (Victims of criminal activity, n.d.). The U.S. Congress
created this law as a form of immigration relief that is available aliens who are victims. The
Congress wanted to aid law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting human traffickingby

my experience this was very difficult to accomplish. (Green card for a victim of a crime (u

to establish presents in the United States, to ensure family unity. In reality, this specific

What Is The Theme Of Forrest Gump
Prejudice, violence, socioeconomic difficulties, sexual assault, stigmas against people with
disabilities, inequality, and politics. These topics resonate throughout the tale of one young
southern boy Forrest Gump. In Robert Zemeckis s film, Forrest Gump, the tale of a disadvantaged
and disabled young boy, who grew up in the South, showcases, through light hearted comedy, the
historical evolution of prejudice and discrimination in the United States of America. Forrest Gump

Throughout these classes and the time I spent with my grandparents I one creed became
ingrained in my mind be kind to others no matter their background. Consequently, this idea
instilled itself in me from an early age, the idea that no matter sex, age, religious disparities, race,
nationality, socioeconomic standings, or physical differences people were inherently all equals.
This idea manifested in my mind and changed the way I perceived all components of my life. In
the case of Forrest Gump, the movie further affirmed that all people should be treated as equals
and looked at as simply people. Forrest s simple mindset and perception reaffirmed this belief to

difficult to understand especially when someone as simple as Forrest Gump could understand this.

John Steinbeck was a writer who used naturalism in his works to to bring awareness about
problems in society that he dealt with in his own life. He frequently dealt with the economic and

According to Priti Patel s speech in July 2016, as the Secretary of State for International

main goal to strengthen developing countries ability to trade more with external partners (including
the UK) while helping to create millions of jobs in countries across the world. In this case, African
countries would be considered as their trading partners of the future, she said. When the UK came
out from the European Union, existing relationships with African countries had to be renovated in
order to establish new trade and investment links, hence African regions would allow British
businesses to arise again. The African oil exports and metals are indispensable for the UK
agricultural and manufacturing areas nowadays, and as the UK has more access to African trading

African economic growth by strengthening their trade agreements, then the UK would increase the
living standard of its population. However, African manufactured goods are being exported to many
other powerful countries in the world and with the highest economic growth, and those countries
would include China and the U.S. At this point, as the demand for African manufactured goods and

Sexuality Is A Social Identity That Goes Beyond The...
Sexuality is a social identity that goes beyond the objectivity of the title and into the subjective
scope of the personal lives of individuals, which in turn fabricate the social constructivism of a
nation. Classism, heterosexism, and cisgenderism are further reinforced within the
institutionalization of heteronormativity, being the promotion of the genderbinary and
heterosexuality as the only valid form of gender expression and sexual orientation. The
normalization of this system is not enforced as inconspicuously as one would believe, with both

These American words which are typically used to further define and label individuals who do and

cultural explanation and validation for lesbian Thai women. The omittance of a translation for the
term lesbian in the Thai language further perpetuates the validation of heteronormativity as the only
acceptable form of relationships. The term men being used interchangeably with lesbian
demonstrates how in the Thai culture it is assumed and widely agreed that only men would be
sexually attracted to women (Sinnott, 2).
For Asian women, their sexuality has not only impacted their identity, that identity in itself has
created a power structure within each of these countries that has grown to include, but not

is made known that homosexual behavior does not necessarily lead to an identity, nor does it
necessarily constitute a distinct transgression of sexual or gender norms , yet the secularization of

The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall Themes
The only cruelty greater than death is the nature of the life that precedes it. One s reflection before
nothingness is lost with the person, and will never truly be known nor understood. Katherine Anne
Porter s The Jilting of Granny Weatherall speaks to humanity s difficulty with accepting the finality
of deaththrough the denial of a dying old woman. The story s themes of memory by emotion and
the fault of denial as a solution for grief are underlined by the use of prominent symbols within
broken flashbacks, and intrusions by the story s setting. As Granny Weatherall moves closer to
death, her memories turn from details and stories into her reactions and thoughts from the period.

What Are The Ideals Of The 1920s
America has been plagued with the American Dream since its citizens first started spreading out
westward in search of wealth and fame. Along with this American ideal came the concept of
being un American and not standing for what was considered true American. With the emergence
of Populists, Progressives and Radicals came a vast difference between what was thought as
American. All groups claimed to be trying to make the US a better place however each differed
vastly in their ideas of going about it. During the age of uncertainty between 1890 and the 1920 s a
new movement called the Progressives emerged in parts of the Unites States. They emerged as part
of a long tradition of reform aimed at correcting the issues of the country.
Progressives ranged across the social and political spectrum with different views on reform and
ideas on how to go about it. It crossed the lines of party, class, gender and even race (Nugent,
page 4). Many presidents and influential speakers had overlapping ideas regarding reform. By the
end of the era progressives managed to tackle everything from class conflict to making people
better citizens. Famous progressives include iconic members of US history such as Theodore
Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jane Adams and muckraker journalists such as Upton Sinclair
One of the first issues tackled by progressives included laborers and their disconnection from
government. During the start of the progressive era there were few laws and regulations set

Compare And Contrast Elizabeth I Of Russia And Machiavelli
In order to successfully hold power, Renaissance philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli believed that
a ruler during the time of enlightened absolutism in Europe had to possess qualities of both a
lion and a fox . By this, Machiavelli means that in order to succeed, rulers had to be aggressive and
firm like a lion, while also sly and sneaky like a fox. These traits can be seen in two different
European rulers during this time period, Elizabeth I of Englandand Catherine the Great of Russia,
who both follow Machiavelli s principles successfully.
Elizabeth I of England is the type of ruler that Machiavelli would respect because she behaves
both like a lion and like a fox over the course of her rule. She utilized vigorous tactics in order to
help England become a major European power in many different fields. Following the death of her
sister, Mary I of England, Elizabeth was left with many religious issues to deal with in in her
country. Mary had repealed Henry VIII s Act of Supremacy, which removed power from the English
monarch and granted more power to the Catholic Pope in Rome. Elizabeth reinstated the Act of
Supremacy when she ascended the throne, declaring herself Supreme Governor of the Church of
England. In addition to this act, she also established the Oath of Supremacy. In order for any
person to take public or church office, they had to swear on this oath, and to Queen Elizabeth as
head of church and state. There were three levels of punishment for refusal of taking

Voice, Imagery, Symbols and Theme in Snows of Killamanjaro
The Snows of Kilimanjaro, a short story by Ernest Hemingway, is a brilliant study of a man s
final hours precluding death. The story centers around Harry and his wife, waiting for a plane to
come and take him to a doctor or hospital. Thus begins a stream of passages that takes the reader
along with Harry while he drifts in and out of consciousness, moving from one life to the next. The
obvious theme is death and dying, but the home theme is Harry s return to his past, and his journey

When his wife goes off to kill a piece of meat for dinner, it causes him to think about their life

Drum Techniques
Are you marvelous at multitasking different beats and rhythms at the same time? Can each part
of your body perform perfect tasks at the perfect times, with crisp, natural, moves? Can you meet
the demand standards and constant stamina that this specific instrument gives you? Well this is
the life of a drummer, it doesn t matter what type of drummer because they all get incorporated
into one. The drum set can become a very confusing topic just when it comes to the actual setup.
It is known to be as complex as a Rubik s Cube. The way this works is that there is one snare
drum, 3 toms, a bass drum, hi hat cymbals, and at least one type of other cymbal. Now, this is
just a basic setup that is really simple to work with, but as you progress into the world of
drumming, your set grows to the point where you are almost surrounded in percussion
instruments. One of my favorite drummers, Mike Mangini, has his own personal set that is
HUGE. The set is up against the wall but drums cover in a full 180 degree circle so you have to
kind of climb to get in. Not only that, but there are also drums above his head that he has to pick
up his sticks above his head to hit.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

who is responsible for funding these expenses? CNN wrote an article on the average cost of
raising a child for 18 years, High income families who live in the urban Northeast, for example,
are projected to spend nearly $455,000 to raise their child to the age of 18, while low income
rural families will spend much less, an estimated $145,500, according to the report (Hicken).
Lets go with the lowest number, $145,000, and divide that by 18 years; roughly $8,000 is spent
to care for a child per year in a low income household. Now lets take a look at how many children
are in the foster care system in the United States. On average, 402,000 children are in the foster
care, and in 2013, over 23,000 aged out of the system ( Children s Rights 1). If we were to do the
math, over 3 billion dollars would be spent on fostering children, per year! By simply allowing
same sex couples to adopt, we could save the government money that could be put to use of other
important things, such as improving city parks or assisting other families who struggle financially.
Or better yet, we could be spending money towards getting help for the kids who have been in

The Subplots In Holes, By Louis Sachar
In the book Holes, written by Louis Sachar, there are multiple subplots that are all intertwined. In
particular, the Elya and Madame Zeroni subplot is tied very closely with the main plot of the
book. Madame Zeroni gives Elya a family lullaby that is actually about his future descendent,
Stanley and Madame Zeroni s future descendent, Zero. The if only song in Holesforeshadows
Stanley and Zero s character development. The reader is first introduced to the lullaby in the
subplot of Elya and Madame Zeroni. Madame Zeroni gave this song to Elya, telling him that if
he sang the lullaby to his pig while it was drinking, then it would grow bigger. She also told him
that he had to come back and carry her up the mountain and sing the lullaby to her or Elya and
his descendants would be cursed forever. However, Elya doesn t follow Madame Zeroni s
directions, and he instead leaves for America, where he meets his future wife Sarah. The lullaby
that Elya receives from Madame Zeroni is actually a family song that Madame Zeroni gave to her
son who lives in America. However, when Elya translates the song for Sarah, the song is changed
because Elya is cursed. Sachar writes, Elya tried his best to translate it from Latvian into English,
but it wasn t the same, (39). This means that there are two versions of the lullaby: one is the cursed,
Yelnat s version and the other one is the unchanged, Zeroni version. Both versions are about Stanley

Effects Of Alcohol On Social Behavior
The presence of alcoholic beverages seems ubiquitous today, and it has been that way for
thousands of years. Nowadays, it can be found at sporting events, social gatherings, with meals, and
in many other environments. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug (it alters mood and potentially
consciousness) and is specifically classified as a depressant. Depressant drugs slow down the
nervous systemand physiological functioning while promoting a relaxing, drowsy feeling. In the
case of alcohol, these aforementioned effects typically arise when heavy doses of the drug are
consumed. In low to moderate doses, however, the opposite happens. The alcohol has a mood
elevating effect, along with many other physical and social symptoms that are associated with it.
This essay will discuss some of the effects that alcohol has on social behavior. First, the mechanism
of action alcohol has on the brainwill be explained, followed by paragraphs that discuss how
moderate amounts of alcohol influence social behavior, sexual behavior, and driving ability. The
fundamental basis for how alcohol effects the body starts at the neuronal level. A neuronis another
name for nerve cell. The human brain contains trillions of these nerve cells, which transmit
information to and from each other, and subsequently to the rest of the body. Neurons have
dendrites, which contain receptors that receive chemical messages from other nerve cells. These
receptors are influenced by chemicals called neurotransmitters, which

A Brief Note On The Rock Island Arsenal
In an organization as large as the United States Army, it is critical that managers at every level are
able to effectively perform their duties and maintain the chain of command. Throughout the
semester we have learned about how a manager needs to be able to adapt and how the
responsibilities of a manager might change depending on the culture and structure of a company.
What interested me the most about Mr. Dearborn s position within the civilian sector of the Army
was how he was able to manage both small and large groups of employees simultaneously, both
encompassing vast ranges of personality types and work styles, maintaining responsibility of both
immediate employee actions and contributing to the larger more global direction of the civilian
sector of the Army. The Rock IslandArsenal is located in Illinoison the Mississippi river in between
the cities of Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois. As the largest weapons manufacturing
arsenal in the United States it serves a variety of purposes aside from manufacturing weapons.
These purposes include aiding in militarylogistics, and providing base support. The scope of the
Rock Island Arsenal s involvement in military affairs extends beyond the US Army, it receives
contracts from all branches of the United States armed forces and it s allies ( Rock Island Arsenal,

Effects Of Deforestation On Amazon Forest Resilience Research
There is a chain reaction due to deforestation. Deforestation leads to decrease in biotic pump
disrupting the water cycle leading to a decrease in transpiration and increase in temperature. Such
rise in temperature leads to lack of rainfall, increase droughts and forest fires to which the fires will
disrupt the water cycleeven more. The effects of deforestationon Amazon forest resilience research
by Zemp et al. (2017), build upon previous research done in the field of forestry studies and used
similar methods to collect data. Although they have come to some shortcomings such as the risk of

Zemp et al. (2017) s result on forest resilience in their simulation supports that the Amazon s
forest survival also decrease as there is an overlap between reductions of forest resilience with
deforested areas. Despite the evidence showing the detrimental effects of deforestation, Zemp et
al. (2017) s research focuses primarily on the quantity of the forest and deforestation, as such, the
research has a gap such that other geographical influences like fertilization, greenhouse gases, and
water use, are not accounted for. However, Zemp et al. (2017) had gained more understanding as
they had used other research papers, like [Spracklen and Garcia Carreras, 2015; Lejeune et al.,
2015], to close the unanswered gaps in the deforestation issue. Although the paper has explained the
effect of deforestation on water fluxes, the problem remains that in the short and long term,
regardless of any deforestation, many of the Amazon rainforest regions will continue to lose
precipitation and become more vulnerable to disturbances from fire and droughts, even more so in
the dry season (Zemp et al. 2017).

Pro Choice Vs. Pro-Abortion
All I m going to say is there is a difference between pro choice and pro abortion. Pro choice is
understanding that you have no control over what another woman does with her body. Pro

necessarily approving of abortion, it s allowing people to make decisions, which is why it s called
pro CHOICE. If you are pro life, you are saying an unborn fetus is equivalent in value as a born

The Contract Will Stand Between Ben And Colin Essay
Defined by MacQueen and Thomson, a contract is: ... an agreement between two or more parties
having the capacity to make it, in the form demanded by law, to perform, on one side or both, acts
which are not trifling, indeterminate, impossible or illegal. . While drunk on a stag night out in
Glasburgh, Ben bought a 1970s London style Routemaster for ВЈ57,000. Which on the following
morning he said that did not mean to order the vehicle, but Colin (the seller) insisted on the deal. To
determine whether the contract will stand between Ben and Colin, as defined by MacQueen and
Thomson, the essential features of contract formation, together with the intention to create legal
relations and his contractual capacity will need to be examined.
The first important issue that would have to be tackled is that of contract formation. Was there an
offer and a relevant acceptance of that offer? To begin with, it needs to be determined whether there
was an offer. Ben bought the bus through the garthdon jumbles.eu website and despite a price being
displayed the initial advert was an invitation to treat. An invitation to treat is when the person who
made the invitation to treat is not obligated to accept the offer in the absence of a promise to do
so . The invitation to treat was only then made into an offer when Colin sent an email of
acceptance saying: Hello Ben! Thank you buying the Routemaster! I confirm that I accept your

Hard Bop Essay
Though I was introduced to numerous styles of Jazz this semester, each with their own merits, I
will cover the phenomenon of Hard bop in this paper. I believe that hard bop is a style unlike
any other, and it deserves more recognition. Though it only reached its height of commercial
success through the 1950 s and 1960 s, I hope that it will be revived one day, as I believe it to be
one of the greatest styles in Jazzhistory.
Understanding hard bop involves understanding the cultural roots that spurred its development. In
the 1930 s, big Swing bands such as the Count Basie Orchestra dominated the Jazz scene. It was a
style that had a feeling of joy and freedom, in a time when the economy was in poor shape. The

Miles Davis is one highly significant musician of the hard bop period. Known as the great
innovator of Jazz, he was not known solely for hard bop, but rather numerous styles. Nonetheless,
his recording of the album Walkin in 1954 is made an excellent contribution to the genre. Old
bebop stars were featured in this album, with Kenny Clarke on the drums and Horace Silver on the

Throughout, Davis sounds grand: comfortable, authoritative and well within his gamely element.

`` This Is Water `` By David Foster Wallace
We are all selfish no matter how hard we try to deny it. I learned this by listening to the speech
This is Water , by David Foster Wallace. In the speech, Wallace discusses that if we actually
think about what we think about, then we can make our lives better. He also talks about how the
exact same experience means two different things to two different people based on their beliefs.
Another thing he talks about is that we are all self centered and tend to interpret life just
thinking about ourselves. I completely agree with Wallace s ideas of people being self centered
and also that people give different meanings to the exact same thing, because they make sense
and also because that is how we all think, but no one wants to accept it. In Wallace s speech, he
says that, It s a matter of choosing to do the work of somehow altering or getting free of my
natural, hard wired default setting which is to be deeply and literally self centered and to see and
interpret life through this lens of self (Wallace 3). What Wallace means in this quote is that our
default setting is to think about ourselves without even thinking twice about it, and that we are the
absolute center of the universe. Wallace first makes this statement in section two of the speech, but
he keeps talking about this ideathroughout the entire speech. He believes that it is hard for people
to stop thinking only about themselves, but rather think of other people, and be more aware of the
choices we make. I agree

A Note On Subprime Loans
Recent mayhem in the American economy attributed to a weakening of business regulation. In the
absence of oversight, lending became a wildcat enterprise. Mortgage brokers easily deceived
home buyers by promoting subprime loans, and then they passed on bundled documents to unwary
investors. These subprime loans were offered at a rate above prime to individuals who did not
qualify for prime rate loans. The loans were made to people who had no other way to access funds,
and little understanding of the mechanics of the loan. A scholarly document on subprime lendingby

would happen if the borrower could not repay the loan. Subprime loans commonly have
adjustable rates that have monthly payments that will dramatically increase two years after
receiving the loan. Subprime loans were usually classified as those where the borrower had a

Persuasive Essay On Forest Fires
Forest fires are not uncommon in the west coast but rising temperatures and global climate
change have been leading to drier and drier seasons in many areas, making wildfires a growing
concern. The west coast has both the largest number of wildfires as well as the most severe,
starting from 100 acres and above (Donegan, 2016). Southern California is a frequent location for
wildfires each year due to its dry weather and hot temperatures during the summer, and the Santa
Clarita region alone has had a 20% reduction in soil moisture. The effects of the reduction of soil
moisture has led to concerning forest fire events such as the Sand Fire in 2016 and also the
invasion of PineBark Beetles. Events like these can be incredibly dangerous to both nature and to
the human population. Although difficult to prevent because forest fires can happen naturally
when temperatures rise, especially during summers, there are still many strategies people can
follow in order to prevent fires in local forests (Wildland Fire, n.d.). We will also explore some
benefits wildfires can bring to the ecosystem.
General Info
Wildfires can originate from a match, a cigarette bud, or a campfire and can have devastating
effects on the surrounding wildlife and human population as well. About 90% of wildfires are the
cause of human error (Wildland Fire, n.d.). Wind, temperature, and humidity can have a large effect

Filling Station There are a lot of talented poets, especially Elizabeth Bishop. Elizabeth was born

Abraham Lincoln s The Argument Against The War

Abraham Lincoln Condemns the War with Mexico, 1848
1)What is Abraham Lincoln s main argument against the war?
When Lincoln was a Congressman in the House of Representatives, during his short term, he
loudly opposed the Mexican war held in 1846. His main argument was that the war was
unconstitutional and unnecessary and was based on a lie. He faced severe criticism from fellow
Whigs including other congressmen for raising voice against the USA intervention in the Mexican
territory and promotion of slavery there. This was against the popular President James Polk s moves
to acquire lands under USA control. Lincoln thought it was unjust and tyrannous.
2) What evidence does Lincoln use to support his anti war argument?
Lincoln believed that Polk had invaded Mexico based on a lie. So he questioned the President Polk
s intent of going to war which was based on Mexico crossing national borders in order to draw
first blood in the US soil. He challenged Polk in the House floor to prove the claim of waging the
Mexican war by providing evidence and facts in a fair and just manner. Lincoln emphasized that
Polk should not resort to rhetoric, evasions, and arguments and should be precise and transparent in
presenting the facts that led to the war.

Is an imitation of an already existing artwork a separate artwork in itself? Some philosophers
consider would consider saying yes to this question such as Davies from the theory of multiple
artworks while others may say no such as Collingwood in his differentiation of a true artwork as

credit for its appreciation are given to different people. For example, would a cover for Hey Jude

along with Coldplay but only if they intended to imitate the song in its original form. Even
without all the instruments present, if the intent is there to imitate the song Yellow with the best

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I had figured that it had not moved or deleted itself so I went back online to redownload the file. Once online and on the website in which the correct file was located, I had begun to search for the file again. After searching for nearly 30 seconds, the browser had suddenly closed and left me staring blankly at the desktop. About 5 seconds had passed and it mysteriously opened back up but this time on an unfamiliar webpage; 30 seconds passing again until I was back staring at the desktop for another 5 seconds. This process went on for around a minute before I had decided to restart the computer. Once the computer had restarted and everything was running as normal again, it was time to relaunch the browser and download the proper file. The browser launched with no problem at all and I was able to successfully navigate to the correct website once again and was able to begin searching. Once again, after so long of skimming the page for the file, the browser shut down without a notice and restarted, opening to the same unknown website as before. The next day my parents needed to use the computer and discovered the problem. Immediately they had known it was my fault and put me in charge of removing the virus. Without any clue as to how to remove malware from a computer, my first thought was to go to YouTube and search for a generic video of how to clean a computer of viruses. Cluelessly I followed the instructions of the video and opened critical file systems ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Professor And The Madman Analysis Simon Winchester unravels the complex mystery of the Oxford English Dictionary and its contributors in his book, The Professor and the Madman. Already a unique piece of literary accomplishments, the OED is even more set apart from the rest by its unusual history. Winchester explores the life of one of its most prominent benefactor and his bizarre fingerprint he made on the creation of the first complete dictionary. William Chester Minor grew up in the British colony on the coast of India in Ceylon. At an early age Minor grew up like any healthy, normal boy would; until he began his process into adulthood. Minor was an abnormally gentle young boy; where most young teenagers fought and wrestled, Minor read books and painted. The pubescent Minor developed strange fantasies for the native women who lived on the island. These were the first... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frequently he complained of pygmies climbing into his room through the baseboards and whispering into his ears. As a result, he coated the floor of his bedroom with a white powder to see the footprints of the tiny intruders. Minor was disgusted by himself, as well as the dreams, and ultimately mutilates his body and removes his manhood. During the forty four years he stayed at the asylum in England, word reached him of the great creation of the OED. The director of the lexicographic team, James Murray, sent letters to find candidates that ,which in return, would find compelling words and definitions to include in the dictionary. Minor was ecstatic to apply for such a demanding position. Corresponding with the team of lexicographers, Minor s mental condition seemed to be relieved as he had a task at hand. Monthly, he would send in at least one thousand slips with words and definitions to be checked. With sending in so many slips, Minor contributed to more than ten thousand words and definitions and quotations in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Telling It Like It Is Essay Telling It Like It Is My country, right or wrong, is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, My mother, drunk or sober. G. K. Chesterton, The Defendant These are indeed desperate times. On September 11, 2001, America witnessed the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history. Grief stricken, angry, and shocked, people from all over America came together in the face of tragedy and solidly affirmed their pride in the U.S.A. The outpouring of patriotism that resulted from this tragedy was astonishing. Our country came together: specific agendas were swept aside in favor of partisanship and overwhelming support for our leaders, for our institutions, for our democracy. ... For example: in the immediate wake of September 11th, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer requested that the press limit its details on Presidential security and U.S. intelligence. He asked the media to refrain from printing advance notice of the president s schedule...and... how U.S. intelligence gets its info, like saying it came from phone intercepts or satellites. He also asked that they not take any pictures of White House security. The media largely agreed, in part because the request seemed reasonable, and in part because of the patriotic fever sweeping the nation. One news journalist, justifying the sensibility in restricting information, commented Nobody wants to see the president hurt. 1 Historically, First Amendment rights have been highly disputed in cases of national security. In 1971, the right to publish disputed information was affirmed in the landmark Pentagon Papers case. A former Defense Department employee, Daniel Ellsberg, stole a copy of a document entitled History of U.S. Decision Making Process on Vietnam Policy, better known as the Pentagon Papers. The documents contained evidence on the military s bungled handling of the Vietnam War . Ellsberg leaked the copy to the New York Times and the Washington Post, and the Times began printing articles referring to the papers. The Nixon administration quickly ordered the Times to cease printing, arguing that publishing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of The Movie Bird On August 29th, 1920, Charlie YardBird Parker landed in this world and 34 years later he flew away. Within those 34 years, music was eternally influenced by Bird, and this influence continues to be celebrated all around the world. In 1988, Clint Eastwood and Joel Oliansky worked together to create a documentary titled Bird based on Charlie Parker s life. There are many story telling techniques used within this film that aid in making it an extremely brilliant motion picture. Bird is very accurate in portraying the reality of Charlie Parker s life, and this accuracy is important because it will help to present and therefore preserve his legacy. A legacy that will intrigue and inspire musicians forevermore. There are many story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Movie critic for the Chicago Sun Times Roger Ebert explains this scene, It shows him touring the West Coast and hearing some simple truths one night from Gillespie, who told him that the difference between them was that Diz took care of business, and Charlie took care of screwing up. Gillespie was not a heavy drinker or an avid drug user, unlike Charlie. In that way these two musical legends were complete opposites. Because Bird focuses on this contrasting relationship, we are given a clearer idea of who Parker was. Included in the aspects of Bird that make it such a great film is the outstanding acting performance by Forest Whitaker, who played Charlie Parker, and Diane Venora who played Chan Richardson. Some critics believe that Bird was a bit too scattered, but was held together smoothly because of Forest Whitaker s acting. Forest Whitaker s brilliance is the force that holds the scattered pieces of Bird together. • 6. Relationship Between Religion And Religion The Relationship Between Religion and Science Today, we are living in the time in which every aspect of life is influenced by some form of science. From the scientific revolution of the 17th century through present day, scientists have grown continuously. The impact of science is particularly powerful on traditional religious beliefs. Religion is the belief in the supernatural, the invisible, the sacred, the visually receptive, and the illogical. The belief is many fold, depending on the historical period, geography, culture, and dependent on the content of each religion. It is operated by many rituals depending on the different religious community. From the Latin religion meaning respect for the sacred, divine reverence or duty, the link between man and the divine, people would live and survive these ways with the beliefs of the supernatural powers in which would help people, sometimes synonymous with belief, often defined as spirituality to believe in the supernatural, the sacred or the divine, as well as the ethics, rituals, customs, and institutions associated with these beliefs. Basic notions of religion divide the world into two parts: divine and mundane. Tranquility is normal in human life, and the divine is supernatural. In the face of the divine, people use rituals to show respect and worship and that is the basis of religion. • 8. Losing a Language Explication Essay W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for Losing a Language in the title, hinting at the lament like characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a hidden meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title suggests: languageand words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic and sad tone to emphasize the lossand quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple diction. He carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and does not stray from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist throughout the piece but to become the dominant thought... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A second conflict introduced in the first couplet is the gap between the old and the young due to the loss or change of language. The speaker states that the old still remember and contrasts this with the young, who have fewer words. In the fifth couplet, we see a similar situation with parents and children. The speaker gives us two ends of a spectrum to demonstrate the distance that the change in language has created. We see a physical representation of this with the line, farther and farther away. The gap is also represented in the sixth and ninth couplets, particularly in the lines we are wrong and dark / in the eyes of the new owners. By referring to one side as we and the other as them, new owners, or somebody, we can see two sides and that what was once familiar to the speaker is now replaced by something foreign (line 21) and an us vs. them gap is formed. Because the speaker is direct and clear, we are able to recognize the nostalgic tone simply because of what the speaker is explicitly telling us. However, the structure of the poem also contributes to the tone. There are no punctuations throughout the entire poem, yet we still read it slow enough to create a dramatic and sad mood. The poem is divided into fourteen couplets, each with a substantial gap between them. At the end of a couplet, we are forced to slow down and fully pause before moving on to a new section. In addition, most of the lines are complete clauses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Effects Of Alcohol On Social Behavior The presence of alcoholic beverages seems ubiquitous today, and it has been that way for thousands of years. Nowadays, it can be found at sporting events, social gatherings, with meals, and in many other environments. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug (it alters mood and potentially consciousness) and is specifically classified as a depressant. Depressant drugs slow down the nervous systemand physiological functioning while promoting a relaxing, drowsy feeling. In the case of alcohol, these aforementioned effects typically arise when heavy doses of the drug are consumed. In low to moderate doses, however, the opposite happens. The alcohol has a mood elevating effect, along with many other physical and social symptoms that are associated with it. This essay will discuss some of the effects that alcohol has on social behavior. First, the mechanism of action alcohol has on the brainwill be explained, followed by paragraphs that discuss how moderate amounts of alcohol influence social behavior, sexual behavior, and driving ability. A Brief Note On The Rock Island Arsenal In an organization as large as the United States Army, it is critical that managers at every level are able to effectively perform their duties and maintain the chain of command. Throughout the semester we have learned about how a manager needs to be able to adapt and how the responsibilities of a manager might change depending on the culture and structure of a company. What interested me the most about Mr. Dearborn s position within the civilian sector of the Army was how he was able to manage both small and large groups of employees simultaneously, both encompassing vast ranges of personality types and work styles, maintaining responsibility of both immediate employee actions and contributing to the larger more global direction of the civilian sector of the Army. The Rock IslandArsenal is located in Illinoison the Mississippi river in between the cities of Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois. As the largest weapons manufacturing arsenal in the United States it serves a variety of purposes aside from manufacturing weapons. These purposes include aiding in militarylogistics, and providing base support. The scope of the Rock Island Arsenal s involvement in military affairs extends beyond the US Army, it receives contracts from all branches of the United States armed forces and it s allies ( Rock Island Arsenal, IL. ). Since it s establishment in 1862 it has provided vital intelligence to all branches of the military and has largely impacted our nations defense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Effects Of Deforestation On Amazon Forest Resilience Research There is a chain reaction due to deforestation. Deforestation leads to decrease in biotic pump disrupting the water cycle leading to a decrease in transpiration and increase in temperature. Such rise in temperature leads to lack of rainfall, increase droughts and forest fires to which the fires will disrupt the water cycleeven more. The effects of deforestationon Amazon forest resilience research by Zemp et al. (2017), build upon previous research done in the field of forestry studies and used similar methods to collect data. Although they have come to some shortcomings such as the risk of underestimating the differences which are introduced in evapotranspiration following deforestation, compared to study using fine scale observations... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zemp et al. (2017) s result on forest resilience in their simulation supports that the Amazon s forest survival also decrease as there is an overlap between reductions of forest resilience with deforested areas. Despite the evidence showing the detrimental effects of deforestation, Zemp et al. (2017) s research focuses primarily on the quantity of the forest and deforestation, as such, the research has a gap such that other geographical influences like fertilization, greenhouse gases, and water use, are not accounted for. However, Zemp et al. (2017) had gained more understanding as they had used other research papers, like [Spracklen and Garcia Carreras, 2015; Lejeune et al., 2015], to close the unanswered gaps in the deforestation issue. Although the paper has explained the effect of deforestation on water fluxes, the problem remains that in the short and long term, regardless of any deforestation, many of the Amazon rainforest regions will continue to lose precipitation and become more vulnerable to disturbances from fire and droughts, even more so in the dry season (Zemp et al. 2017). The Drought and Deforestation: Has Land Cover Change Influenced Recent Precipitation Extremes in the Amazon? By Bagley et al. Pro choice is understanding that you have no control over what another woman does with her body. Pro choice is understanding that people make their own decisions based on their life. Pro choice is not necessarily approving of abortion, it s allowing people to make decisions, which is why it s called pro CHOICE. The Contract Will Stand Between Ben And Colin Essay Defined by MacQueen and Thomson, a contract is: ... an agreement between two or more parties having the capacity to make it, in the form demanded by law, to perform, on one side or both, acts which are not trifling, indeterminate, impossible or illegal. . While drunk on a stag night out in Glasburgh, Ben bought a 1970s London style Routemaster for ВЈ57,000. Which on the following morning he said that did not mean to order the vehicle, but Colin (the seller) insisted on the deal. To determine whether the contract will stand between Ben and Colin, as defined by MacQueen and Thomson, the essential features of contract formation, together with the intention to create legal relations and his contractual capacity will need to be examined. The first important issue that would have to be tackled is that of contract formation. Was there an offer and a relevant acceptance of that offer? To begin with, it needs to be determined whether there was an offer. Ben bought the bus through the garthdon jumbles.eu website and despite a price being displayed the initial advert was an invitation to treat. An invitation to treat is when the person who made the invitation to treat is not obligated to accept the offer in the absence of a promise to do so . • 32. Hard Bop Essay Though I was introduced to numerous styles of Jazz this semester, each with their own merits, I will cover the phenomenon of Hard bop in this paper. I believe that hard bop is a style unlike any other, and it deserves more recognition. Though it only reached its height of commercial success through the 1950 s and 1960 s, I hope that it will be revived one day, as I believe it to be one of the greatest styles in Jazzhistory. Understanding hard bop involves understanding the cultural roots that spurred its development. In the 1930 s, big Swing bands such as the Count Basie Orchestra dominated the Jazz scene. • 33. `` This Is Water `` By David Foster Wallace We are all selfish no matter how hard we try to deny it. I learned this by listening to the speech This is Water , by David Foster Wallace. In the speech, Wallace discusses that if we actually think about what we think about, then we can make our lives better. He also talks about how the exact same experience means two different things to two different people based on their beliefs. Another thing he talks about is that we are all self centered and tend to interpret life just thinking about ourselves. I completely agree with Wallace s ideas of people being self centered and also that people give different meanings to the exact same thing, because they make sense and also because that is how we all think, but no one wants to accept it. In Wallace s speech, he says that, It s a matter of choosing to do the work of somehow altering or getting free of my natural, hard wired default setting which is to be deeply and literally self centered and to see and interpret life through this lens of self (Wallace 3). What Wallace means in this quote is that our default setting is to think about ourselves without even thinking twice about it, and that we are the absolute center of the universe. Wallace first makes this statement in section two of the speech, but he keeps talking about this ideathroughout the entire speech. He believes that it is hard for people to stop thinking only about themselves, but rather think of other people, and be more aware of the choices we make. I agree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Persuasive Essay On Forest Fires Forest fires are not uncommon in the west coast but rising temperatures and global climate change have been leading to drier and drier seasons in many areas, making wildfires a growing concern. The west coast has both the largest number of wildfires as well as the most severe, starting from 100 acres and above (Donegan, 2016). Southern California is a frequent location for wildfires each year due to its dry weather and hot temperatures during the summer, and the Santa Clarita region alone has had a 20% reduction in soil moisture. The effects of the reduction of soil moisture has led to concerning forest fire events such as the Sand Fire in 2016 and also the invasion of PineBark Beetles. Events like these can be incredibly dangerous to both nature and to the human population. Although difficult to prevent because forest fires can happen naturally when temperatures rise, especially during summers, there are still many strategies people can follow in order to prevent fires in local forests (Wildland Fire, n.d.). We will also explore some benefits wildfires can bring to the ecosystem. General Info Wildfires can originate from a match, a cigarette bud, or a campfire and can have devastating effects on the surrounding wildlife and human population as well. When Lincoln was a Congressman in the House of Representatives, during his short term, he loudly opposed the Mexican war held in 1846. His main argument was that the war was unconstitutional and unnecessary and was based on a lie. He faced severe criticism from fellow Whigs including other congressmen for raising voice against the USA intervention in the Mexican territory and promotion of slavery there. This was against the popular President James Polk s moves to acquire lands under USA control. Lincoln thought it was unjust and tyrannous. 2) What evidence does Lincoln use to support his anti war argument? Lincoln believed that Polk had invaded Mexico based on a lie. So he questioned the President Polk s intent of going to war which was based on Mexico crossing national borders in order to draw first blood in the US soil. He challenged Polk in the House floor to prove the claim of waging the Mexican war by providing evidence and facts in a fair and just manner. Lincoln emphasized that Polk should not resort to rhetoric, evasions, and arguments and should be precise and transparent in presenting the facts that led to the war. 1)Mexico was declared independent in 1821 following a series of revolts and political turmoil due to Spanish colonial rule.
