Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Lab Report
AGAROSE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS
I. INTRODUCTION
Agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) is the most common and effective way of separating and
analyzing DNA fragments of different sizes (Lee Costumbrado, 2012). The agarose gel, at the time
that it is completely polymerized, acts as a molecular sieve that, in the existence of electric current,
pull apart DNA by their molecular weight and size. AGE is not mostly used to visualize DNA but
also used for quantification or to single out a particular band. The DNA is visualized in the gel by
staining with of ethidium bromide (EtBr). EtBr ties strongly to DNA by interpolate between the
bases and its fluorescent meaning that it absorbs invisible UV light and transfers the energy as
visible orange light (Scientific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each restriction enzyme cuts DNA at a identified base sequence. This produces thousands of
restriction fragments of all different sizes because the base sequences being cut could be far from
each other (long fragment) or close together (short fragment). Gel electrophoresis process is used to
detach these fragments on the basis of their sizes. DNA fragments are injected into wells and an
electric current is applied along the gel. DNA is negatively charged so it is attracted to the
positive end of the gel. The shorter DNA fragments move faster than the longer fragments. DNA is
separated on basis of size. A radioactive material is joined which combines with the DNA
fragments to yield a fluorescent image. A photographic copy of the DNA bands is acquired. The
pattern of fragment distribution is then examined and

Essay about Rxn of Iodoethane with Sodium Saccharin
Title: Reaction of Iodoethane with Sodium Saccharin Ambient Nucleophile
Dates Performed: February 21 + 28, 2013
Date Submitted: March 14, 2013
Abstract:
The product ratio of N ethylsaccharin to O ethylsaccharin that occurred due to alkylation with
iodoethane at 80 oC was determined to be 81.5% to 18.5%, respectively, based on an analysis of
the 1H NMR spectrum that was collected. The melting point range of 87.8 94.7 oC also indicated
that the mixture was largely composed of N ethylsaccharin. The more prevalent product structure is:

N saccharin is more stable than O saccharin, so it should be the major product of the reaction, if not
the only product, if the reaction reaches thermal equilibrium. A reaction involving the oxygen as the
nucleophile should occur faster than one involving nitrogen because the oxygen is more
electronegative. This electronegativity would attract the attack of the nucleophile more so than the
Nitrogen atom would. Based on the 1H NMR spectrum that was collected, a few things can be
determined. Based on deshielding and electronegativity, the peak that occurs around 4.7ppm is
associated with the O ethylsaccharin product and the peak at 3.8 ppm is associated with the N
ethylsaccharin product. Based on the height ration, the N ethylsaccharin product is the more
prevalent result. The solvent that was chosen for the experiment is a polar aprotic solvent that can
be used to stabilize charge. This stabilization can also be used to stabilize an ionic transition state.
This stabilization of the transition state along with the nature of the products based on the chemical
properties would encourage the reaction to proceed toward the N ethylsaccharin product. This
product is more stable

Reproductive Behavior Analysis
Discussion: Our results show that there was not a significant difference between the different tank
densities and the number of antennal groomings within them. (P=0.31). There was also no
indication of a statistically significant difference between the tanks when pheromones were not
present and when pheromones were present (see fig.1). One aspect of our results was close to
having a significant difference. There was no difference among the frequency of male antennal
grooming between the three different B. dubia densities with pheromones, but the data was close to
being statistically significant (p= 0.051), and we think that with more refined methods, and a better
understanding of B. dubia social interactions that future data may be statistically significant. We
thought that antennal activity would be the most important aspect of cockroach behavior when it
came to the spread of disease and social interactions, but our data did not support our hypothesis. We
made many observations, that we did not quantify, that demonstrated much more active behavior in
the presence of pheromones. These behaviors, including males approaching the cotton ball with the
female pheromones and the males sparring with each other, were much more common in the...

Tea Drinking During The Late Ming Period
Water tasting has become a special skill among the tea drinkers during the Ming era, and this ability
was utilized by many scholar officials to demonstrate their sensual sensitivity and the sophistication
of their taste. In the late Ming period, the importance of water choice was still emphasized by tea
experts in their tea books and essays. On one hand, good water can help diffusing the scent of
tea; on the other hand, unsuitable and low quality water would destroy the taste and smell of tea,
or would be even harmful to drinkers health. Xu Cishu (1549 1604?), a well known tea expert
who was raised in a scholar official family in Hangzhou during the late Ming Dynasty, had
concluded, Fine tea contains nice fragrance. Its fragrance can only diffuse depend on water.... Show

When mediocre tea leaves meet the best water, tea became the best; however, mediocre water with
the best tea leaves only results in mediocre tea. Above quotations are some representative examples
of describing the relationship between water and tea. They have shown that, the evaluation of tea
as a drink always goes along with the quality of water during the late Ming period. Tracing back to
the Tang Dynasty, drinking water has already played an important role in tea drinking; however,
the understandings of water, including the taste of water and the relationship between water and
tea were much simpler, because the flavor of water had not been stressed by tea experts yet.
When Lu Yu (733 804?), known as the Sage of Tea, was writing The Classic of Tea in 760s, he
had already noticed the importance of the quality of water in tea drinking. In the fifth chapter of this
classic, he had categorized drinking water into three types and ranked them by their connections
with tea.

An important question is whether gender differences affected the processing and evaluation of
marketing communications. Comparative advertising to encourage a higher level of brand
evaluation among participants, but not in women. Conversely, for women, attention gaining
compare appealed encourage relevant ads manipulation intention inference. In the process leading to
these gender differences to evaluate the results. For men, the appeal results in a more favorable
comparative advertising and brand evaluation and higher purchase intention. For women, by
contrast manipulation intention to bring the appeal has had a negative view of increased
advertising and brand evaluation, and to reduce the purchase intention. Thus gender plays in
response to certain types of attraction while in another reaction is not very significant role.

Essay about Tourette Syndrome
Tourette Syndrome
Works Cited Not Included
Tourette Syndrome was named for George Gilles de la Tourette, who first discovered the syndrome
in 1885. Today there is still a mystery surrounding the disorder, it?s causes and it?s cures. But one of
the biggest mysteries is an associated behavior called coprolalia. This symptom is the uncontrolled
swearing or socially unacceptable utterances that some with Tourettes experience. Although despite
the media?s fascination, Tourette syndrome is not the cursing disease many believe it to be.
This baffling neurological disorder is characterized by repetitive motor and/or vocal tics. The
identifying symptom of TS seems to be tic disorders. ?A tic is a brief, repetitive, purposeless, ...

There are also utterances of insults and racial comments (Bruun 41). This seems the most
commonly recognized tic disorder of Tourettes. When most think of Tourette they automatically
assume the random cussing. Actually this seems to be a rare symptom. ?Coprolalia, the symptom
that the general public associates most often with TS, and it is not common?(Bruun 41).
It only occurs it a small minority of TS individuals. The numbers are an estimated 5 30% as
reported by the Tourette Syndrome Association in 1993. Some relate the coming on of an
inappropriate word as hard to control as a sneeze. They can feel it coming on but are unable to
control it even with medication (Michigan 1). One of the characteristics of coprolalia that sets it
apart from just simply swearing is that words come out compulsively. Most often when a person is
angry but even if they are just under stress (Kozlowski 1).
Causes of TS are still being debated and most leads are pointing to genetic factors. The
understanding of it seems to be incomplete and unfinished. But in 1999 researchers announced
that they had found evidence suggesting a link between chromosomes 4 and 8 and TS. Though
there still is no clearly identified gene to date. So all they can conclude is if one parent has TS there
is a 50/50 chance for the child to carry it unless it is liked by gender (Packer 5). A study done by
Dr. Ruth Bruun indicated a tendency toward a decrease in severity as patients grow in

Garden efforts and how it has led to a tangible, positive change in the community s health and food

This program could be partnered with the Denver Public Schools, Denver Urban Gardens,

educational based gardens provide spaces for experimental hands on education. This also allows
for incorporating the full cycle of learning associated with healthy food; from growing, to nutrition,
and then to cooking. The school gardening program would be designed to involve teachers and
certain primary curriculums in subjects such as economics, social studies, and science. This in turn
would create respect for diversity and also promote self growth. The primary purpose would always
be education. Having the school and the garden be a cohesive program that would be included in
the day to day culture of school would promote sustainability with the administration, neighborhood
volunteers, and parents who are all essential to the function of this plan.
Stewardship opportunities for the students could be provided through the outdoor classroom by
utilizing the grounds of the school site. Outdoor classrooms are engaging spaces for children; it

Communication is inarguably the most effective way of understanding and interacting with one

are presumably dating each other in Hills Like White Elephants , as well as Parvez a Pakistani
immigrant to England and his teenage son Ali in My Son the Fanatic , communicate throughout the

In Hills Like White Elephants , it is couple relationship that causes by an unborn child. After

symbolizes unwanted things, or the unborn baby. Later after her discussion with the American
about the abortion she says I know. But if I do it, then it will be nice again if I say things are like
white elephants and you ll like it? (page 3), which shows that she retracted her previous thought
about not keeping the child. However, the American does not want to keep the child, but still
hoping to save their broken relationship I ll love it. I love it now but I just can t think about it.
You know how I get when I worry. (page 3). I don t want you to do anything that you don t want
to do (page 4), says the American. Towards the end of the story the girl says would you please
please please please please please please stop talking? (page 5), which tells us that the girl knows
that their broken relationship can not be saved anymore. Furthermore, the relationship in My
Son the Fanatic deals with a father son relationship. One night after Parvez notices that his son
is changing, he says to his taxi driver colleagues I can t understand it! he burst out. Everything is
gone from his room. And I can t talk to him anymore. We were not father and son we were
brothers! Where has he gone? Why is he torturing me? (page 2). One of the reasons of their
broken relationship is that both of them have contradicting views, Parvez asks Ali What has
made you like this? , living in this country replies Ali, but I love England, they let you do almost
anything here. says Parvez, that is the problem Ali says (page 5). Parvez who appears to be
conservative prefers to have modern life styles, but Ali who is a teenager chooses to live his life

The Old Testament Prophets
Introduction: Haggai is the prophet that tethers the Old Testament Prophets to second temple
Judiasm and New Testament Christianity. The man himself is covered in mystery and intrigue.
Who is this prophet that comes on the scene and vanishes as fast as he appears? The context is
in a time when the Israelites are back in the land YWHW promised, yet things feel much
different. The temple is not yet in construction and the Judeans are having trouble with the
indigenous Samaritans. Haggai has a challenge, but he is just the man for the job, and YWH has
called him for just the time as this. Haggai The person: Little is known of the prophet Haggai.
The name Haggai means feast of Yahweh or by contraction, Hagariah means Yahweh hath
girded. This leads scholars to believe that he was born on a feast day. Another theory is that the
writer of the book recorded Haggai s prophecies later, and like Malachi, gave him a nickname
because he prophesied on feast days. He prophesied for a very short time. Haggai 1:15 record the
dates of Haggai s prophetic ministry. He prophesied in the Second year of King Darius (521
486), in the year 520 from August 29th to December 18th. These 15 short weeks make up one of
the smallest prophetic ministries in the prophetic books. We also know Haggai existed through
other biblical and extra biblical sources. The book of Ezra contains passages mentioning Haggai

Theme Of Human Nature In The Crucible
The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is a play which examines the terrible events of the Salem Witch
Trials in Massachusetts as an allegory to the Red Scare in the early 1900 s. In his book, Arthur
Miller draws parallels between both events in an attempt to show the pitfalls of human nature. In
All the Pretty Horses, renowned author, Cormac McCarthy, writes, What is constant is history
is greed and foolishness and a love of blood and this is a thing that even God who knows all that
can be known seems powerless to change (239). McCarthy accurately depicts the dark side of
human nature, specifically related to the events in the Salem Witch Trials. The Crucible
exemplifies the themes of greed, foolishness, and a lust for blood. Arthur Miller s The Crucible
demonstrates greed and selfishness through characters actions and words. Abigail, worried of
self preservation, threatens let either of you breathe a word...,and I will come to you in the
black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you (575) to
Betty, Mary Warren, and Mercy Lewis in order to shut them up. Abigail is so focused on
protecting herself that she is willing to kill her family and friends rather than face danger.
Similarly, Parris also demonstrates greed as he is preoccupied with protecting himself from his
enemies. When questioning Abigail on Betty s mysterious illness, Parris begs Abigail, If you
trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my

CEO of BP Essay
When Robert Horton left his position as Chairman and CEO of BP, the company was in financial
trouble and the employee morale was notably low. The company was experiencing losses, the debt
to equity ratio was out of control, and the company had positioned itself in so many diverse
markets that most of the employees had no idea what the company mission and goals were. When
David Simon took over as CEO, he was faced with the daunting task of turning the wayward
company around. Simon accomplished this task for three reasons: he diagnosed and modified the
organizational culture; he possessed important leadership skills; and he knew how to motivate
employees.
One of the biggest deficiencies of Horton s management was his attempt to Americanize ... Show

The drive Simon possessed was magnified through his years of school and his progression through
the company. The case illustrates Simon s drive with the story of him being told by a teacher that
he should go into industry. She was implying he was not an intellectual but this criticism only
fueled his drive. These are just a few of the characteristics Simon possessed in addition to being a
good communicator and being able to inspire trust.
In addition to possessing these leadership skills, Simon also possessed the skills necessary to
motivate his employees to perform at their highest capacity. A recurring employee complaint was
the ambiguous nature of company goals. The case tells us that in order to alleviate this, Simon
set simple goals which were achievable in the short term so that employees could see their
progress. Not only was this a way to enhance employees commitment to goals but it also helped
reward the employees in timely manner. Simon also had the ability to empower his employees to
achieve as he was described as having a sophisticated and unique talent for guiding people without
them really knowing he is doing it (Davidson).
All of the examples mentioned above worked well for Simon because he was able to excite
employees and get them all working toward the same goal. By doing this he changed the culture of
BP and in time improved overall company performance. Although Simon did great things for BP,
his approach was not without flaw. One

father is growing older and he is the only other male in the family. For example, when Barry s
mother says Mr. Cleaver was supposed to come up and shave him Barry replies by saying I ll

instead of his father asking Mr. Cleaver to come shave him. Another example of Barry growing

he is not too young that shows that he thinks of himself as a person who can

of these trailers have so many things that are the same and different they are both very effective in

insurance company, Medibank Private, would be sold on initial public offering. This announcement
made Commonwealth treasurer, Joe Hockey, confident toward selling billions of dollars of public
assets. In return, the Abbott Government will help unlock funding for new public infrastructure
projects through reinvestment of the sale proceeding from existing Government owned assets. The
Commonwealth will provide states and territories incentive payments of 15 per cent of the sale
price of privatised assets, with the returns to be reinvested into new priority infrastructure projects.

In consonance with opposition, the Government would lose Medibank s annual dividend
payment of about $500,000 and sale will increase the budget scarcity. Stephen Jones, ALP
opposition assistant spokesperson on health and convener of the save Medibank alliance,
criticize the Government decision of privatization, receiving unexpected support from Former
Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, through a written letter in which Fraser clearly opposes
the proposed sale of Medibank Private in 2006. With this arguments, the article encourages the
opposition of the sale of Medibank, and that instead Medibank should be kept in public hands
until future people s Government can implement any new system of reforms and extensions for
Medicare, Or else, the entire Australian healthcare system, Medicare, will be infected with
Privatization, Outsourcing, charges and fees. On February 15, the rally was conducted at Sydney

Rhetorical Analysis Of Success Is Counted Sweetest
Rhetorical Analysis Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address and Emily Dickinson s
Success is Counted Sweet, are two inspirational pieces of art that fall under two different types of
discourses. The Second Inaugural Address, is a great example and definition of what Rhetoric is.
It encompasses all four resources of languages argument, appeal, arrangement, and artistic devices.
Success is Counted Sweet, doesn t cover the four resources of language that apply to rhetoric;
therefore, it is categorized as a poem. According to the chapter, rhetoric addresses unresolved issues
that do not dictate a particular outcome and in the process it engages our value commitments. (15).

He states how both, the North and South, read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and
neither the North nor South expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it attained.
Lincoln also maintains an optimistic tone throughout the speech and invokes unity with his
parallel structured sentences. Emily Dickinson s Success is Counted Sweetest, doesn t cover all
four resources of language. It is a poem that does not call for action but does create an emotional
appeal for the people. Throughout her poem, she created an emotional appeal for success and its
value and the desire and want for success. We see how she creates such emotion when she states,
The distant strains of triumph break, agonizing and clear. What Dickinson means by this is that
gaining success can be the most beautiful accomplishment but at the same time, agonizing to
reach. This creates an emotional appeal for those who are living through the Civil War, making
the people have a desire for peace, but they have to go through bloodshed in the process of gaining
success. Emily Dickinson carries out artistic devices throughout her poem, which also creates an
emotional appeal for the audience. She uses metaphors to describe success by stating, Success is
counted sweetest. Dickinson also uses her poem to recreate what was occurring at the time of the
war. She speaks of the purple Host which is the representation of the Army and capturing the

Medieval Castles the Start of the Modern Age Essay examples
Medieval castles were the start of the modern age. They had forms of government, and everyone
had a specific job. It was, however, still primitive to modern standards, because they still had a
King and Queen and no indoor plumbing. This blend of primitive and modern makes medieval
castle life an interesting and intriguing time to live. A medieval castleusually had five main
buildings: The hall, the kitchen, barracks/living quarters/supply buildings, water rooms, and a
chapel. The chapel was the most influential and sacred place of the entire castle. Usually the chapel
would be two stories tall to separate the royal familyfrom servants. The royal family would be on

The royal family would sit astride him on wooden benches. Most halls were arranged much as a
church was with wooden benches facing the king. The tables that everyone would sit around
had white linen cloth on them and the tables could also be easily removed. If the king was
especially prestigious he would have a stationary table that would never move. The hall often
had stone or wooden pillars the supported its wooden roof and if the hall was on the second floor
it was supported by stone or wooden pillars as well. The floor that these pillars supported was
almost always wooden or if they could afford it stone vaulting. The floor was often wooden and
covered in rushes and herbs that would be changed periodically. Carpet was only used on walls
and tables until the fourteenth century. The windows of the hall were often just wooden shutters
although some did have tinted glass in later time periods. The hall was often the most beautiful
and decorated place of the castle with the church being a close second. The kitchen was the main
area for food preparation and storage. There were often chicken coops, pens, and other locations
where animals were kept for food nearby the kitchen. There were many fruit trees and orchards
placed closely as well. The kitchen usually consisted of several fireplaces with a central hearth

Literary Review of Sexuality and Gender in Science Fiction...
Literary Review
My argument is that SF literature offers a utopian hope for the future where individual differences
are no longer criticized. To conduct this literature review I used multiple information sources to
examine issues of gender and sexuality within science fiction literature. None of these sources
claim to have produced a conclusive work on the interpretation of gender and sexuality in SF. Some
of what I have read seems to be a general overview while some is more focused, but everything
clearly references other theorists, studies and texts to back up the arguments made.

In other words feminist SF is an effective and powerful means for feminist visionary
developments that are crucial for the initial attempts to embark on the cultural and social changes
that are the goals for the feminist political enterprise. Hollinger discusses Le Guin s view that
feminist SF doesn t prophecy the future but it refers to the world as it is. This is interesting
because it emphasises this idea that the SF can explore such issues of gender and sexuality in reality.
Hollinger references works such as The Female Man, Bloodchild , The Left Hand of Darkness and
Women on the Edge of Time together with people like Donna Harraway, Teresa de Lauretis and
Judith Butler. In addition to the well known feminist utopian works of the 70 s Hollinger also
mentions Helen O Loy, which is an early masculine focused novel. We see the importance of
feminist SF when we read about works such as this, because the contrast shows that some SF
writers obviously didn t identify the historical possibility and cultural traditionalism of our notions
regarding gender and sexual identity and the roles of men and women. Hollinger brings together
plenty of evidence to back up her points about feminist theory and SF making for a comprehensive
essay.

Reflection On Hiroshima
In John Hersey s Hiroshima, he writes about the lives of six people before, during, and after the
horrific atomic bombing. Heresy explains the horrors and the aftermath of the atomic bombs
that were dropped in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. John writes the story of six survivors to
show their experience during the catastrophe and how they had moved on with their lives.
Throughout the story, John expresses his disapproval to the idea of dropping the atomic bombs
onto the two Japanese cities through the imagery of bombs aftermath, the characters he chose to
write about, and the terrifying descriptions of the noiseless flash. After reading this story, and
understanding the horrific things the bomb caused, I still agree with the fact that we dropped it
because I believe the atomic bombs were effective in ending World War II and preventing the
Japanese from attacking more American forces but the cost and distraction caused by the bomb
was too high to be considered fair. Perhaps we would have been able to end the war slowly
without the use of mass fire power of the atomic bombs and not endanger the lives of the people
John Hersey wrote about. In the first chapter of the book, Heresey writes about what the six
survivors were doing before the bomb hit. He would go back and forth between characters, till the
moment the bomb hit on their side of the story. The most crucial detail he wrote about at the end of
their stories was the bright, noiseless flash. For example, one of the

Great Anthropocene Essay
A Great Anthropocene or a Utopia
An Eco modernist manifesto states that we need a good Anthropocene, which demands that humans
use their growing social, economic, and technological powers to make life better for people,
stabilize the climate, and protect the natural world (Page 7). In order to protect the natural world,
we should stay away from nature and give more land back to the nature world, instead of letting
human society goes along with nature in harmony. The new technologies would allow us to achieve
much more from a limited amount of land. Thus, humans have the opportunity to re wild and re
green the Earth (Page 14) and will achieve a great Anthropocene.
I also deeply love and emotionally connected to the natural world, and I really hope what the
manifesto proposed could come true. I agree that by using new technologies, we can make what
impossible become possible, we can be more efficient, and we can allowing more room for non
human species (Page 18). However, I doubt that would happen, though I believe it could. First, it s
not easy to access these new technologies. Currently, they are not as cheap as the author described.
Second, when the new technologies fail, they might bring more significant disaster to the nature
world. Third, whether we can achieve a great anthropocene is more a humanity issue that a
technology issue in my view.

Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir...
Characterization of duck viperin
Introduction:
Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus
(IAV) (Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing
sporadic infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections
impose a large burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In
humans, in 2008, 90 million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000
deaths worldwide (Nair et al. 2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused
by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total 16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about
€ 507 million, with € 112 million in direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses
(Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They
stimulate a robust innate immune response when infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate
immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore, characterization of innate immune genes of
ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during IAV infection, might give insight into the
relationship between IAV and the innate immune response of ducks, which will help us to control
the virus.
When exposing the mallard ducks to the highly pathogenic IAV (H5N1), there was an upregulation
in some innate immunity genes; one of the highest upregulated gene was viperin (Virus inhibitory

Four Basic Elements Of Hirschi s Social Bond Theory
Hirschi s social bond theory is made up of four basic elements; attachment, commitment,
involvement and belief. The element of attachment has to do with one s involvement in society, and
the bonds they form with others. Social bond theory is based on the idea that deviancy occurs in an
individual when social connections are weak or non existent, the element of attachment has to do
with the bonds one forms with individuals or institutions. Attachment acts as an indirect control
factor, as attachment determines one s status in society, which in turn determines how much social
capital one possesses. Attachment is largely influenced by one s parents, interpreted as children
inheriting social capital from their parents based on the level of... Show more content on

Hirschi s social bond theory differs from his self control theory, as his social bond theory has to do
with external factors rather than internal. Social bond theory sees the social control factor as fluid,
whereas self control theory sees it as stagnant. Self control theory has to do with the individual, and
their internal beliefs which are cemented in their upbringing. Social bond theory sees beliefs as
fluid, based on the interactions that occur over an individuals lifespan. The two theories basically
see crime as an internal vs external factor, stemming from the individual s experiences. 2. I believe
early intervention programs in schools would be effective, as they help children form social bonds
with their peers, thus integrating them into the elementary school institution. Students spend most
of their lives in school, developing a strong attachment to the institution and their peers would help
strengthen their conventional beliefs, as school is a conventional institution. As one s conventional
beliefs are strengthened, the possibility of deviance is greatly reduced due to the influence of
taught morals and strong social bonds. Integrating one into a conventional institution such as a
school would prove to be very effective, based on social bond theory. Supporting two parent
families would also be effective, as a two parent environment would lead to a higher level of
attachment. As one would have a higher level of attachment with their

The Pit And The Pendulum By Edgar Allen Poe
...All sensations appeared swallowed up in a mad rushing of the soul into Hades. Then silence, and
stillness, night were the universe. This quote from The Pit and the Pendulum is an excellent
example of how Edgar Allen Poe is a master at using point of view, setting, and conflict to display
the thematic message of fearin his short stories. This example uses all three literary strategies.
The setting contributes to the theme of fear by stating that the soul was descending to Hades,
the Greek god of the underworld, or hell, a place that will almost definitely draw a fear response
in the reader. He uses conflict by having the reader infer that the story is about a dying person,
and so on. He finds unique ways to do this with all types of literary strategies, but most
prominently with point of view, setting and conflict. He especially uses point of view in a unique
way, making the narrator either mentally unstable or having some other unusual ailment.
Therefore, after thorough analysis of both The Black Cat and The Pit and the Pendulum, it is
clear that Edgar Allen Poe is a master at using setting, conflict, and point of view to help display
the unique thematic message of fear throughout almost all of his literary works. Firstly, Poe uses
setting to convey the theme of fear in The Black Cat and The Pit and the Pendulum . In The Black
Cat , the climax of the story takes place in a cellar. At length, for the third or fourth time, they
descended into the cellar, The

The Importance Of Colors In The Chinese Culture
The author attempts to understand the connotations of colours in the Chinese culture and how it
shapes its day to day socio political and economic transactions. The author elucidates and develops
the theory of Keane about the transfer of messages in context to the established relationships among
the people belonging to specific cultures. The author employs ethnographic research tactics in order

the meanings of the materials to convey the nature of the relationships.
Toulson attempts to explore the meanings of materials especially the colours that carry more than

Argument Of Galileo Dialogue Summary
Galileo s Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems uses powerful logic and simply described
concepts to overcome the Aristotelian bias of the populous and argue in favor of Copernicus
heliocentric view of the universe. Copernicus theorized that the earth, along with the other planets
in the sky, is in motion around the sun. The Aristotelian s geocentric worldview, that the earth is the
motionless center of the universe, was deeply ingrained into the minds of the people and the
teachings of the church. Galileo s argument had to be not only incisive and logical to have any
sway, but it also had to avoid offending or denying the ancient principles of thought proposed by
Aristotle. He walked this delicate line between educating the public and... Show more content on

In parroting the principles of Aristotle, they do not notice how much damage they do to his
reputation, how much discredit they bring him, and how much they diminish his authority instead
of increasing it (199). These men take Aristotle s good name and drag it through the mud by
claiming that every one of his sayings is absolute truth, rather than the best possible hypothesis he
could have made with his level of technology. By undermining the arguments of his opponents in
this way, Galileo frees himself up to defer to Aristotle s logical principles without invoking
quotations of his conclusions.
While Galileo holds little respect for those who take Aristotle s theories at face value, he shows no
lack of respect for the great philosopher himself. Galileo applauds the fact that Aristotle s works are
examined and closely studied, and only blame(s) submitting to him in such a way that one blindly
subscribes to all his assertions and accepts them as unquestionable dictates (200). Galileo s
arguments for heliocentrism would convince any layman of their truth, but his opponents are so set
in their ways that they would be unwilling to even listen to his concepts. When an opponent relies
on ancient words and does not use ration to come to their beliefs, it is impossible to use ration to
convince them otherwise. Galileo, in his effort to contest what his opponents consider incontestable,

Genomic Structural Variants
Genomic structural variants (SVs), including deletions, duplications, inversions, and translocations
of genetic sequences, account for at least five times more variable base pairs than single nucleotide
variants among human genomes. However, traditional genome wide scans for adaptive evolution
and disease association tend to ignore thousands of complex structural variants because these scans
rely heavily on intact linkage disequilibrium blocks. This is because a majority of deletion
polymorphisms in the human genome is not in linkage with single nucleotide variants around it due
to frequent geneconversion events in this locus. Recent locus specific studies have investigated a

Aim 1. Resolving the haplotype architecture of GHRd3 to determine its functional and evolutionary
impact: In our preliminary studies, we have now resolved the haplotype architecture using focused
analysis of thousands of genomes. This will allow us to thoroughly interrogate associations of
different GHR haplotypes with metabolic and developmental diseases, expression and methylation
and levels of neighboring genes in different tissues. In addition, using population genetics and
model based analysis of the newly resolved haplotypes will enable us to trace back the adaptive
pressures acting on the locus, shedding light on the evolutionary forces maintaining this deletion in
the population.
Aim 2. Determining the mechanisms through which GHRd3 affect cell function: Based on
previous studies, we hypothesize that GHRd3 leads to multiple downstream consequences in the
growth hormone pathway, including sensitization to growth hormone stimuli. We have now
established CRISPR Cas9 induced isogenic human cell lines with all three possible GHRd3

Compare And Contrast Biological And Behavioural...
This essay will outline and compare both biological and behavioural perspectives on human
behaviour. The history, major discoveries and theories will be discussed along with some of the
most influential theorists in each of these two areas of psychology. This essay will also compare
the two areas strengths and weaknesses in the field of psychology.
Biological psychology is the study of how biology affects a number of psychological processes i.e.
how the mind affects the body (Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner Hood 2015). The study of the mind
has had many influential figures throughout history that often use each other s ideas as a
stepping stone to further advance psychology, some of the first being Plato and Aristotle. Plato
believed in nativism and theorised some skills and characteristics are innate and a person is
born with them (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle, however, was in favour of philosophical
empiricism i.e. that all knowledge is acquired through experience, yet current scientists do not
consider that nativism and empiricism are entirely accurate (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle also
believed that the brain existed to cool the blood, as during that time people were sceptical that
an organ could be responsible for behaviour (Kolb, Whishaw Teskey 2016). The next major
advancement in biological psychology was the introduction of phrenology by Francis Gall, Gall
s theory suggested that all psychological capabilities had a specific place in the brain (Schacter et
al, 2015). This theory later turned out to be correct, although was overshadowed by Gall s
insistence that he could state a person s character dependant on the size of lumps and indentations
on a person s skull, which he thought would represent the size of that brain region beneath
(Schacter et al, 2015). Due to this, in spite of a large following, phrenology was quickly
discredited. Biologist Pierre Flourens, unhappy with Gall s research, began removing localized
areas of the brain in various animals to observe their behaviour (Schacter et al, 2015). Flourens then
found that animal s movements differed to those with intact brains. This mirrored a situation for
surgeon Paul Broca with whom one of his patients had damage to the left side of

The Controversial Ending of King Lear by William...
The Controversial Ending of King Lear by William Shakespeare Few Shakespearean plays have
caused the controversy that is found with King Lear s ending scenes. Othello kills himself,
Macbeth is executed, and of course in hamlet, everyone dies. Lear, however, is different from
other Shakespearean classics. Is Lear mad or lucid? Is Cordelia really dead? Is Edmund s delay
explainable? What is the nature of the Lear world that occasioned all of this? How does Knight s
thesis relate to the ending? Critical commentary varies and appears exhaustive. Bradley speaks of
evil, but thinks Lear dies in a moment of supreme joy; Knight argues that however vicious and
cruel the Lear world is, the death of Cordelia represents the future... Show more content on

Foakes thinks that Hamlet now is less suited for the twentieth century than Lear, insofar as Lear
s existential content is what matters, so now the question becomes why would Cordelia want to
live in Lear s world? The play is about protesting a world gone mad. The situation is further
intensified by the Tate emendation that playgoers witnessed for over a century. Arguing from
the perspective of post restoration and neo classical taste that literature must teach virtue, Tate
dropped the Fool, gave Cordelia and Edgar a love interest, thus sparing her life along with her
father: Edgar: My dear Cordelia! Lucky was the Minute Of our approach, the Gods have

Repercussions Of Revenge In Hamlet
The Repercussions of Revenge Revenge is shown throughout Shakespeare s play Hamlet, leaving
the destruction of human relationships in its wake. The act of vengeance is usually a violent act
against someone as a result of something they directly or indirectly did. This can be seen in The
Tragedy of Hamlet; Prince of Denmark with Hamlet s plan to murder Claudius for the death of
his father, King Hamlet, and Laertes similar plan to murder Hamlet for the death of his father,
Polonius. When someone is attempting to seek retribution against someone else, it results in
that person deceiving the people they love to further progress their intentions. Because of
revenge, ones suffering increases due to the continuous loss of relationships with your love
ones. Revenge could even put you in a situation that could risk your own life. Throughout
Shakespeare s play, William Shakespeare demonstrated how revenge leads to a path of deceit
and despair. In the play, Hamlet shows how revenge can turn someone towards the dark side of
life. This could be anywhere from lying and deceiving your loved ones to murdering helpless
bystanders; all in order to further their own goal. Prior to Hamlet finding proof about what the
ghost said, how Claudius murdered his father, he decided that if what he was told was true he
would go down the path of vengeance to honor his father s memories. Hamlet started to lie to
everyone he loved about his true intentions, so no one would suspect him attempting to kill the
new king. He did this by tricking Polonius, Ophelia s father and King Claudius s advisor, into
believing that the reason he was acting very strange was because he was terribly in love with
Ophelia. In act two scene one, Ophelia exclaimed to her father that Hamlet acted as if he had
been tossed out of hell... to speak of horrors he comes before me. Polonius responded by asking
Mad for thy love? (93 95). Hamlet has succeeded in lying to everyone in the kingdom about why
he is so depressed and confused by Polonius stating mad for thy love. Now all the characters
believe he is just a normal teenage boy attempting to court a well known beauty. He can now
continue his plan of murdering Claudius to seek vengeance for his father s death,

What is Procedural Programming Paradigm?
In Information Technology(IT) jargon Programming is termed as an innovative process where the
computer receives instructions how to perform a task as per the requirement or solving a specific
problem.
The various ways of attending to the process of programming is known as programming paradigms.
Majority of programming language comes under one paradigm; contrary to this one could observe
some languages having elements of multiple paradigms. Paradigm is a way where a specific code
is arranged. A code comprises various commands or instructions there in relation to functions and or
procedures.
Most vital programming paradigms can be listed as Procedural paradigms and the object oriented
paradigms.

The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Introduction
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind is an Oscar winning alternative U.S. film released
March 19th 2004(IMDb 2015). It was produced by Focus Features and follows the dysfunctional
love story of Joel and Clementine. The film itself despite being strongly influenced by
Hollywood pays homage to other film movements such as surrealism and Soviet montage. The
film in itself was a struggle to be categorised, thought it has been described as a romance, black
comedy and many others that will later be explored. The director aimed to make this film timeless
and still stands to be as effective today as it was when it was released.
Production
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the brainchild of director Michel Gondry and scriptwriter
Charlie Kaufman. Steve Golin on of the crew on the film was quoted saying the two complement
each other. Michel is truly gifted at visualisation. But he also has a lot of soul. Charlie is
probably the most imaginative writer that I ve had the opportunity to work with. He creates
characters and situations that are relatable but very unusual and he also has very visual ideas.
(Dugdale H 2006). The film itself has utilises rawer filming aspects than a classic Hollywood
film. Instead of C.G.I the film uses camera techniques to make the characters smaller or larger in
scale (Dugdale H 2006). The film itself was categorised under many genres including romance,
drama, science fiction, black comedy, surrealism and realism. The

Chiropractic Care Essay
Chiropractic care has become much more sought after in recent years as a method of recovering
the body. By definition Chiropractic is a form of therapeutic manipulation that focuses on the
relationship between the spinal column and the nervous system. It is based on the philosophy that
to experience optimal health, nerve impulses must be able to flow through the body without
obstruction. These impulses become obstructed when the vertebrae in the spine are not aligned
due to a number of reasons ranging from bad posture to an injury, and it the purpose of a
chiropractor to re align the spine to allow the nerve impulses to flow freely ( ChiropracticMedicine
). Simply put all the cracking of bones and joints your hear about is the Chiropractor moving
certain bones back where they originally came from to fix your structure, alignment and overall
function of your body. The goal of Chiropractic care is to restore mobility and range of motion to
your body allowing you to function without pain.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bikers Stereotypes
Leather wearing gun slinging hoodlums are misjudged and called Harley bikers. Nowadays
people are quick to judge a book by its cover. There are so many groups in our society and more
yet to come. The only problem with having many different groups is that most of them have
common characteristics and can be easily misjudged. With the growing population comes more
chances of groups getting mixed up and misjudged. All groups carry around stereotypes and
misconceptions. Stereotypes are a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a
particular type of person or thing and a misconception is a mistaken thought, idea, or notion. Bikers
have been given a bad reputation due to their pasts and certain ways media has portrayed them, but

A parallel force includes at least two forces where all lines of action are parallel.
(c) Explain the difference between point loads and uniformly distributed loads. Include annotated
pictorial diagrams
Point Load In the field of engineering, a point load is a load applied to a single, specific point on
a structural member. It is also known as a concentrated load, and an example of it would be a
hammer hitting a single nail into a beam.
Uniformly Distributed Load A UDL, or a uniformly distributed load, has a constant value, for
example, 1kN/m; hence the uniform distribution of the load. Each uniformly distributed load can
be changed to a simple point force that can be used to determine the stresses in an object. A
uniformly distributed load can be drawn by using arrows and lines. First, the vectors must be drawn
along where the load acts and must be connected with tails. A single line must connect the vectors
together and represent the force point. The line should be horizontal.
What is the difference between a Point Load and a Uniformly Distributed Load?
A point load is a load which acts over a small distance. Because of concentration over small distance
this load may be considered as acting on a point. Point load is denoted by P and symbol of point
load is arrow heading downward whereas a distributed load is one that acts over a considerable
length or you can say over a length which is

Buying vs Leasing
Executive Summary
What would be the best option for a company to lease or purchase equipment? Each business
owner s situation is different. The decision to buy or lease business equipment is unique. It must
be made on a case by case basis. Leasing equipment preserves capital giving the business more
flexibility. While leasing can be good in the short run it can cost you more in the long run. We
will look at the advantages and disadvantages of leasing. My research will look at the different
options a company faces if they lease or buy and why it has become more attractive to lease.
First let s start by describing the basic concept of a lease. Some leases are merely rentals, whereas
others are effectively purchases. FASB classifieds... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like house, then, buying is cheaper than renting in the long term.
While leasing has both advantages and disadvantages. Let s take a look at the disadvantages.
The lack of ownership would be a main disadvantage. You are obligated to make payments and
when a lessee encounters financial distress, the lessor typically becomes its largest creditor. If a
lessor decides to reduce exposure and recall its leased aircraft, an airline can no longer operate.
Lessors require payments for all aspects of airplane utilization and rent, meaning maintenance
reserves and so on. The cash flow becomes much tighter while if they own their own jets they have
much more flexibility. According to Boeings Zolotusky, it comes down to two basic considerations,
the quality of the aircraft involved and the customer involved.
Businesses can change operations and it may be expensive and difficult to terminate a lease before
the end of the term. If the business owns the property it might be easier to sell and make money
rather than losing all of its assets and getting nothing in return. In some cases of leasing when it s
time to renew the owners might demand higher rental payments putting the lessee at a disadvantage.
Lessors offer a very sensible business proposition. For airlines that want to be primarily airlines, it
s a very attractive and efficient service. If the operators want to focus on the service of getting
people on planes,

Essay on The Inevitabilty of the American Revolution
In the early 1620 s, the New England region was first settled by a group of adventurers. These
settlers left England, their native country, by the permission of King Charles the First. At their own
expense they transported themselves to America, and, with great risk and difficulty, settled among
other peoples native to the land. In a very surprising manner, the settlers formed new colonies in the
wilderness and these establishments grew and prospered. Before they had departed England, the
colonists terms of freedom and their relation to the mother country were fully settled; they were to
remain subject to the King and dependent on the kingdom of Great Britain. In return, they were to
receive protection. They would also enjoy the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, the differences between the colonies and Britain became quite distinguishable and
apparent. The ancestors of the early adventurers experienced a different sort of liberty and
patriotism in America than in its parent state. Suddenly though, this sense of self rule came to an
abrupt end. Britain began challenging the autonomous rule that they had indirectly granted the
colonies. John Locke argued that all individuals possessed certain natural rights such as life, liberty,
and property (Greene, 96). It was the responsibility of the government to protect those inalienable
rights. When Britain began imposing sanctions that limited the colonists natural rights, it violated
its responsibility to its dependents. Therefore, Locke s theory provided an intellectual justification
for resistance to British authority. Furthermore, Locke believed that if the government failed in
preserving the natural rights of the individual then rebellion is justified (Greene, 96). Due to the
development of powerful colonial cities, the end of salutary neglect of the colonies by Britain, and
the increasing tension between Britain and the colonies, the American Revolution was inevitable.
What was once considered a territory of rural communities and towns grew to states consisting of
large urban cities. As the society of the states became more complex and integrated, dependence
upon the parent country began to dwindle. As the states matured, their inhabitants were no

  • 2. Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Lab Report AGAROSE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS I. INTRODUCTION Agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) is the most common and effective way of separating and analyzing DNA fragments of different sizes (Lee Costumbrado, 2012). The agarose gel, at the time that it is completely polymerized, acts as a molecular sieve that, in the existence of electric current, pull apart DNA by their molecular weight and size. AGE is not mostly used to visualize DNA but also used for quantification or to single out a particular band. The DNA is visualized in the gel by staining with of ethidium bromide (EtBr). EtBr ties strongly to DNA by interpolate between the bases and its fluorescent meaning that it absorbs invisible UV light and transfers the energy as visible orange light (Scientific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each restriction enzyme cuts DNA at a identified base sequence. This produces thousands of restriction fragments of all different sizes because the base sequences being cut could be far from each other (long fragment) or close together (short fragment). Gel electrophoresis process is used to detach these fragments on the basis of their sizes. DNA fragments are injected into wells and an electric current is applied along the gel. DNA is negatively charged so it is attracted to the positive end of the gel. The shorter DNA fragments move faster than the longer fragments. DNA is separated on basis of size. A radioactive material is joined which combines with the DNA fragments to yield a fluorescent image. A photographic copy of the DNA bands is acquired. The pattern of fragment distribution is then examined and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about Rxn of Iodoethane with Sodium Saccharin Title: Reaction of Iodoethane with Sodium Saccharin Ambient Nucleophile Dates Performed: February 21 + 28, 2013 Date Submitted: March 14, 2013 Abstract: The product ratio of N ethylsaccharin to O ethylsaccharin that occurred due to alkylation with iodoethane at 80 oC was determined to be 81.5% to 18.5%, respectively, based on an analysis of the 1H NMR spectrum that was collected. The melting point range of 87.8 94.7 oC also indicated that the mixture was largely composed of N ethylsaccharin. The more prevalent product structure is: C2H5I C2H5I And/Or And/Or N ethylsaccharin product O ethylsaccharin product Experimental Procedure: Sodium saccharin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... N saccharin is more stable than O saccharin, so it should be the major product of the reaction, if not the only product, if the reaction reaches thermal equilibrium. A reaction involving the oxygen as the nucleophile should occur faster than one involving nitrogen because the oxygen is more electronegative. This electronegativity would attract the attack of the nucleophile more so than the Nitrogen atom would. Based on the 1H NMR spectrum that was collected, a few things can be determined. Based on deshielding and electronegativity, the peak that occurs around 4.7ppm is associated with the O ethylsaccharin product and the peak at 3.8 ppm is associated with the N ethylsaccharin product. Based on the height ration, the N ethylsaccharin product is the more prevalent result. The solvent that was chosen for the experiment is a polar aprotic solvent that can be used to stabilize charge. This stabilization can also be used to stabilize an ionic transition state. This stabilization of the transition state along with the nature of the products based on the chemical properties would encourage the reaction to proceed toward the N ethylsaccharin product. This product is more stable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Reproductive Behavior Analysis Discussion: Our results show that there was not a significant difference between the different tank densities and the number of antennal groomings within them. (P=0.31). There was also no indication of a statistically significant difference between the tanks when pheromones were not present and when pheromones were present (see fig.1). One aspect of our results was close to having a significant difference. There was no difference among the frequency of male antennal grooming between the three different B. dubia densities with pheromones, but the data was close to being statistically significant (p= 0.051), and we think that with more refined methods, and a better understanding of B. dubia social interactions that future data may be statistically significant. We thought that antennal activity would be the most important aspect of cockroach behavior when it came to the spread of disease and social interactions, but our data did not support our hypothesis. We made many observations, that we did not quantify, that demonstrated much more active behavior in the presence of pheromones. These behaviors, including males approaching the cotton ball with the female pheromones and the males sparring with each other, were much more common in the... • 8. Tea Drinking During The Late Ming Period Water tasting has become a special skill among the tea drinkers during the Ming era, and this ability was utilized by many scholar officials to demonstrate their sensual sensitivity and the sophistication of their taste. In the late Ming period, the importance of water choice was still emphasized by tea experts in their tea books and essays. On one hand, good water can help diffusing the scent of tea; on the other hand, unsuitable and low quality water would destroy the taste and smell of tea, or would be even harmful to drinkers health. Xu Cishu (1549 1604?), a well known tea expert who was raised in a scholar official family in Hangzhou during the late Ming Dynasty, had concluded, Fine tea contains nice fragrance. When mediocre tea leaves meet the best water, tea became the best; however, mediocre water with the best tea leaves only results in mediocre tea. Above quotations are some representative examples of describing the relationship between water and tea. They have shown that, the evaluation of tea as a drink always goes along with the quality of water during the late Ming period. Tracing back to the Tang Dynasty, drinking water has already played an important role in tea drinking; however, the understandings of water, including the taste of water and the relationship between water and tea were much simpler, because the flavor of water had not been stressed by tea experts yet. When Lu Yu (733 804?), known as the Sage of Tea, was writing The Classic of Tea in 760s, he had already noticed the importance of the quality of water in tea drinking. In the fifth chapter of this classic, he had categorized drinking water into three types and ranked them by their connections with tea. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today there is still a mystery surrounding the disorder, it?s causes and it?s cures. But one of the biggest mysteries is an associated behavior called coprolalia. Some relate the coming on of an inappropriate word as hard to control as a sneeze. They can feel it coming on but are unable to control it even with medication (Michigan 1). One of the characteristics of coprolalia that sets it apart from just simply swearing is that words come out compulsively. Most often when a person is angry but even if they are just under stress (Kozlowski 1). Causes of TS are still being debated and most leads are pointing to genetic factors. The understanding of it seems to be incomplete and unfinished. But in 1999 researchers announced that they had found evidence suggesting a link between chromosomes 4 and 8 and TS. Though there still is no clearly identified gene to date. So all they can conclude is if one parent has TS there is a 50/50 chance for the child to carry it unless it is liked by gender (Packer 5). The man himself is covered in mystery and intrigue. Who is this prophet that comes on the scene and vanishes as fast as he appears? The context is in a time when the Israelites are back in the land YWHW promised, yet things feel much different. The temple is not yet in construction and the Judeans are having trouble with the indigenous Samaritans. Haggai has a challenge, but he is just the man for the job, and YWH has called him for just the time as this. Haggai The person: Little is known of the prophet Haggai. The name Haggai means feast of Yahweh or by contraction, Hagariah means Yahweh hath girded. This leads scholars to believe that he was born on a feast day. Another theory is that the writer of the book recorded Haggai s prophecies later, and like Malachi, gave him a nickname because he prophesied on feast days. He prophesied for a very short time. Haggai 1:15 record the dates of Haggai s prophetic ministry. He prophesied in the Second year of King Darius (521 486), in the year 520 from August 29th to December 18th. In his book, Arthur Miller draws parallels between both events in an attempt to show the pitfalls of human nature. In All the Pretty Horses, renowned author, Cormac McCarthy, writes, What is constant is history is greed and foolishness and a love of blood and this is a thing that even God who knows all that can be known seems powerless to change (239). McCarthy accurately depicts the dark side of human nature, specifically related to the events in the Salem Witch Trials. The Crucible exemplifies the themes of greed, foolishness, and a lust for blood. Arthur Miller s The Crucible demonstrates greed and selfishness through characters actions and words. This is interesting because it emphasises this idea that the SF can explore such issues of gender and sexuality in reality. Hollinger references works such as The Female Man, Bloodchild , The Left Hand of Darkness and Women on the Edge of Time together with people like Donna Harraway, Teresa de Lauretis and Judith Butler. Throughout the story, John expresses his disapproval to the idea of dropping the atomic bombs onto the two Japanese cities through the imagery of bombs aftermath, the characters he chose to write about, and the terrifying descriptions of the noiseless flash. After reading this story, and understanding the horrific things the bomb caused, I still agree with the fact that we dropped it because I believe the atomic bombs were effective in ending World War II and preventing the Japanese from attacking more American forces but the cost and distraction caused by the bomb was too high to be considered fair. Perhaps we would have been able to end the war slowly without the use of mass fire power of the atomic bombs and not endanger the lives of the people John Hersey wrote about. In the first chapter of the book, Heresey writes about what the six survivors were doing before the bomb hit. • 27. Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir... Characterization of duck viperin Introduction: Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV) (Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90 million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al. 2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total 16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore, characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response of ducks, which will help us to control the virus. Social bond theory sees beliefs as fluid, based on the interactions that occur over an individuals lifespan. Students spend most of their lives in school, developing a strong attachment to the institution and their peers would help strengthen their conventional beliefs, as school is a conventional institution. As one s conventional beliefs are strengthened, the possibility of deviance is greatly reduced due to the influence of taught morals and strong social bonds. • 29. The Pit And The Pendulum By Edgar Allen Poe ...All sensations appeared swallowed up in a mad rushing of the soul into Hades. Then silence, and stillness, night were the universe. This quote from The Pit and the Pendulum is an excellent example of how Edgar Allen Poe is a master at using point of view, setting, and conflict to display the thematic message of fearin his short stories. This example uses all three literary strategies. The setting contributes to the theme of fear by stating that the soul was descending to Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, or hell, a place that will almost definitely draw a fear response in the reader. He uses conflict by having the reader infer that the story is about a dying person, and so on. He finds unique ways to do this with all types of literary strategies, but most prominently with point of view, setting and conflict. He especially uses point of view in a unique way, making the narrator either mentally unstable or having some other unusual ailment. Therefore, after thorough analysis of both The Black Cat and The Pit and the Pendulum, it is clear that Edgar Allen Poe is a master at using setting, conflict, and point of view to help display the unique thematic message of fear throughout almost all of his literary works. Firstly, Poe uses setting to convey the theme of fear in The Black Cat and The Pit and the Pendulum . In The Black Cat , the climax of the story takes place in a cellar. The Influence Of Past American Women Writers The Influence of Past American Women Writers Amy Tan, Julia Ward Howe, and Judith Sargent Murray are some of the noble women whom have helped shape the lives of their fellow gender with the talents of their writing. Much of their writing became increasingly influential years after it was written. Their literature allows today s modern readers to reflect on the humanity and the treatment of women, understand history s past, and use it as an example to continue spreading the vision of the equality of women today. Tan was known for her willingness to stand up for herself against her mother, in pursuits to find her own dreams versus those of what her mother had laid out for her (Showalter, Ch. Amy Tan ). Howe was a poet, and founder of the nation s Battle Hymn of the Republic , she was known for her activism of women s rights, abolition, and world peace (Showalter, Ch. Julia Ward Howe ). Lastly, Murray was known as the first womanof American letters, speaking for women s rights after the American Revolutionary War (Showalter, Ch. Judith Sargent Murray ). The Importance Of Colors In The Chinese Culture The author attempts to understand the connotations of colours in the Chinese culture and how it shapes its day to day socio political and economic transactions. The author elucidates and develops the theory of Keane about the transfer of messages in context to the established relationships among the people belonging to specific cultures. The author employs ethnographic research tactics in order to experience and understand the basic connections of the colours with that of the Chinese culture. The main argument of the paper establishes that there could be more complex relationships between the perceptions of colour among diverse cultures across the world. The study precisely focuses on the meanings of the materials to convey the nature of the relationships. Toulson attempts to explore the meanings of materials especially the colours that carry more than just a message or compliment. It enables my own understanding regarding the functioning of meaning making and its relevance to the basic cultural etiquettes of a culture. The author makes the study very interesting by inferring the importance of red colour of envelopes (hГіngbДЃo) that appear at Singaporean Chinese funerals. It will look at the customer service aspect and compare the expectations of what the customer had come to expect and what the company actually delivered. It will look into the customer service, that lead to JetBlue s early success and competitive edge against other airlines. It will examine if the Low Cost Airline can continue to maintain its High Frills Status. It will look at the impact the breakdown had on the customers, stakeholders, the role ambiguity on how the employees and managers used to handle situations with their wait and see mentality, and the lack of perceived situational control from its employees. We will attempt to predict what JetBlue should try and prepare for and I will give my personal opinion on JetBlue s response to the breakdown in service in regards to the customer service communication gap and my recommendations with moving forward. • 37. Argument Of Galileo Dialogue Summary Galileo s Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems uses powerful logic and simply described concepts to overcome the Aristotelian bias of the populous and argue in favor of Copernicus heliocentric view of the universe. Copernicus theorized that the earth, along with the other planets in the sky, is in motion around the sun. The Aristotelian s geocentric worldview, that the earth is the motionless center of the universe, was deeply ingrained into the minds of the people and the teachings of the church. Galileo s argument had to be not only incisive and logical to have any sway, but it also had to avoid offending or denying the ancient principles of thought proposed by Aristotle. In parroting the principles of Aristotle, they do not notice how much damage they do to his reputation, how much discredit they bring him, and how much they diminish his authority instead of increasing it (199). These men take Aristotle s good name and drag it through the mud by claiming that every one of his sayings is absolute truth, rather than the best possible hypothesis he could have made with his level of technology. By undermining the arguments of his opponents in this way, Galileo frees himself up to defer to Aristotle s logical principles without invoking quotations of his conclusions. While Galileo holds little respect for those who take Aristotle s theories at face value, he shows no lack of respect for the great philosopher himself. Galileo applauds the fact that Aristotle s works are examined and closely studied, and only blame(s) submitting to him in such a way that one blindly subscribes to all his assertions and accepts them as unquestionable dictates (200). Galileo s arguments for heliocentrism would convince any layman of their truth, but his opponents are so set in their ways that they would be unwilling to even listen to his concepts. Genomic Structural Variants Genomic structural variants (SVs), including deletions, duplications, inversions, and translocations of genetic sequences, account for at least five times more variable base pairs than single nucleotide variants among human genomes. However, traditional genome wide scans for adaptive evolution and disease association tend to ignore thousands of complex structural variants because these scans rely heavily on intact linkage disequilibrium blocks. This is because a majority of deletion polymorphisms in the human genome is not in linkage with single nucleotide variants around it due to frequent geneconversion events in this locus. Recent locus specific studies have investigated a handful of such complex structural variants and have made... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aim 1. Resolving the haplotype architecture of GHRd3 to determine its functional and evolutionary impact: In our preliminary studies, we have now resolved the haplotype architecture using focused analysis of thousands of genomes. This will allow us to thoroughly interrogate associations of different GHR haplotypes with metabolic and developmental diseases, expression and methylation and levels of neighboring genes in different tissues. In addition, using population genetics and model based analysis of the newly resolved haplotypes will enable us to trace back the adaptive pressures acting on the locus, shedding light on the evolutionary forces maintaining this deletion in the population. Aim 2. Determining the mechanisms through which GHRd3 affect cell function: Based on previous studies, we hypothesize that GHRd3 leads to multiple downstream consequences in the growth hormone pathway, including sensitization to growth hormone stimuli. We have now established CRISPR Cas9 induced isogenic human cell lines with all three possible GHRd3 genotypes. • 40. Compare And Contrast Biological And Behavioural... This essay will outline and compare both biological and behavioural perspectives on human behaviour. The history, major discoveries and theories will be discussed along with some of the most influential theorists in each of these two areas of psychology. This essay will also compare the two areas strengths and weaknesses in the field of psychology. Biological psychology is the study of how biology affects a number of psychological processes i.e. how the mind affects the body (Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner Hood 2015). The study of the mind has had many influential figures throughout history that often use each other s ideas as a stepping stone to further advance psychology, some of the first being Plato and Aristotle. Plato believed in nativism and theorised some skills and characteristics are innate and a person is born with them (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle, however, was in favour of philosophical empiricism i.e. that all knowledge is acquired through experience, yet current scientists do not consider that nativism and empiricism are entirely accurate (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle also believed that the brain existed to cool the blood, as during that time people were sceptical that an organ could be responsible for behaviour (Kolb, Whishaw Teskey 2016). The next major advancement in biological psychology was the introduction of phrenology by Francis Gall, Gall s theory suggested that all psychological capabilities had a specific place in the brain (Schacter et al, 2015). This theory later turned out to be correct, although was overshadowed by Gall s insistence that he could state a person s character dependant on the size of lumps and indentations on a person s skull, which he thought would represent the size of that brain region beneath (Schacter et al, 2015). Due to this, in spite of a large following, phrenology was quickly discredited. Biologist Pierre Flourens, unhappy with Gall s research, began removing localized areas of the brain in various animals to observe their behaviour (Schacter et al, 2015). Flourens then found that animal s movements differed to those with intact brains. This mirrored a situation for surgeon Paul Broca with whom one of his patients had damage to the left side of ... The Controversial Ending of King Lear by William Shakespeare Few Shakespearean plays have caused the controversy that is found with King Lear s ending scenes. Othello kills himself, Macbeth is executed, and of course in hamlet, everyone dies. Lear, however, is different from other Shakespearean classics. Is Lear mad or lucid? Is Cordelia really dead? Is Edmund s delay explainable? What is the nature of the Lear world that occasioned all of this? How does Knight s thesis relate to the ending? Critical commentary varies and appears exhaustive. Arguing from the perspective of post restoration and neo classical taste that literature must teach virtue, Tate dropped the Fool, gave Cordelia and Edgar a love interest, thus sparing her life along with her father: Edgar: My dear Cordelia! • 45. Repercussions Of Revenge In Hamlet The Repercussions of Revenge Revenge is shown throughout Shakespeare s play Hamlet, leaving the destruction of human relationships in its wake. The act of vengeance is usually a violent act against someone as a result of something they directly or indirectly did. This can be seen in The Tragedy of Hamlet; Prince of Denmark with Hamlet s plan to murder Claudius for the death of his father, King Hamlet, and Laertes similar plan to murder Hamlet for the death of his father, Polonius. When someone is attempting to seek retribution against someone else, it results in that person deceiving the people they love to further progress their intentions. Because of revenge, ones suffering increases due to the continuous loss of relationships with your love ones. Revenge could even put you in a situation that could risk your own life. Throughout Shakespeare s play, William Shakespeare demonstrated how revenge leads to a path of deceit and despair. In the play, Hamlet shows how revenge can turn someone towards the dark side of life. This could be anywhere from lying and deceiving your loved ones to murdering helpless bystanders; all in order to further their own goal. Prior to Hamlet finding proof about what the ghost said, how Claudius murdered his father, he decided that if what he was told was true he would go down the path of vengeance to honor his father s memories. Hamlet started to lie to everyone he loved about his true intentions, so no one would suspect him attempting to kill the new king. He did this by tricking Polonius, Ophelia s father and King Claudius s advisor, into believing that the reason he was acting very strange was because he was terribly in love with Ophelia. In act two scene one, Ophelia exclaimed to her father that Hamlet acted as if he had been tossed out of hell... to speak of horrors he comes before me. Polonius responded by asking Mad for thy love? (93 95). Hamlet has succeeded in lying to everyone in the kingdom about why he is so depressed and confused by Polonius stating mad for thy love. He was kind enough to let me borrow a motorcycle for the day and we rode to monterey and back with 46 other bikers. No fights, drinking, or drugs we involved the whole way there and the whole way back. That just proves that just because a group has common characteristics with a notorious biker gang doesn t mean that they partake in the same illegal activities as similar groups. Biker gangs ride around supporting groups and bring hope to people, they may look mean but no biker wants to look like a wimp when riding, they want to look like a total Bad Ass. ... • 51. Alter The Shape Of A Loaded Member And Explain The Possible alter the shape of a loaded member and explain the possible effect of excessive stress on a structural member. Annotated sketches are essential. Scenario: A large derelict building is to be converted into industrial storage. The building contains an external hoist that was used to raise loads to the top floor of the structure. The building appears structurally secure but the local planning office requires evidence of some structural calculations before awarding planning permission. To the right is an image of a building with an external hoist that has a safety mesh guard around where the cable lifts. The hoist may be used to carry materials or objects from a lower floor of a building to a higher up floor within the building which may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A parallel force includes at least two forces where all lines of action are parallel. (c) Explain the difference between point loads and uniformly distributed loads. Include annotated pictorial diagrams Point Load In the field of engineering, a point load is a load applied to a single, specific point on a structural member. It is also known as a concentrated load, and an example of it would be a hammer hitting a single nail into a beam. Uniformly Distributed Load A UDL, or a uniformly distributed load, has a constant value, for example, 1kN/m; hence the uniform distribution of the load. Each uniformly distributed load can be changed to a simple point force that can be used to determine the stresses in an object. A uniformly distributed load can be drawn by using arrows and lines. First, the vectors must be drawn along where the load acts and must be connected with tails. A single line must connect the vectors together and represent the force point. The line should be horizontal. What is the difference between a Point Load and a Uniformly Distributed Load? A point load is a load which acts over a small distance. Because of concentration over small distance this load may be considered as acting on a point. Point load is denoted by P and symbol of point load is arrow heading downward whereas a distributed load is one that acts over a considerable length or you can say over a length which is ... • 52. Buying vs Leasing Executive Summary What would be the best option for a company to lease or purchase equipment? Each business owner s situation is different. The decision to buy or lease business equipment is unique. It must be made on a case by case basis. Leasing equipment preserves capital giving the business more flexibility. While leasing can be good in the short run it can cost you more in the long run. We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of leasing. My research will look at the different options a company faces if they lease or buy and why it has become more attractive to lease. First let s start by describing the basic concept of a lease. Some leases are merely rentals, whereas others are effectively purchases. FASB classifieds... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like house, then, buying is cheaper than renting in the long term. While leasing has both advantages and disadvantages. Let s take a look at the disadvantages. The lack of ownership would be a main disadvantage. You are obligated to make payments and when a lessee encounters financial distress, the lessor typically becomes its largest creditor. If a lessor decides to reduce exposure and recall its leased aircraft, an airline can no longer operate. Lessors require payments for all aspects of airplane utilization and rent, meaning maintenance reserves and so on. The cash flow becomes much tighter while if they own their own jets they have much more flexibility. According to Boeings Zolotusky, it comes down to two basic considerations, the quality of the aircraft involved and the customer involved. Businesses can change operations and it may be expensive and difficult to terminate a lease before the end of the term. If the business owns the property it might be easier to sell and make money rather than losing all of its assets and getting nothing in return. In some cases of leasing when it s time to renew the owners might demand higher rental payments putting the lessee at a disadvantage. Lessors offer a very sensible business proposition. For airlines that want to be primarily airlines, it s a very attractive and efficient service. If the operators want to focus on the service of getting people on planes, ... • 53. Essay on The Inevitabilty of the American Revolution In the early 1620 s, the New England region was first settled by a group of adventurers. These settlers left England, their native country, by the permission of King Charles the First. At their own expense they transported themselves to America, and, with great risk and difficulty, settled among other peoples native to the land. In a very surprising manner, the settlers formed new colonies in the wilderness and these establishments grew and prospered. Before they had departed England, the colonists terms of freedom and their relation to the mother country were fully settled; they were to remain subject to the King and dependent on the kingdom of Great Britain. In return, they were to receive protection. They would also enjoy the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, the differences between the colonies and Britain became quite distinguishable and apparent. The ancestors of the early adventurers experienced a different sort of liberty and patriotism in America than in its parent state. Suddenly though, this sense of self rule came to an abrupt end. Britain began challenging the autonomous rule that they had indirectly granted the colonies. John Locke argued that all individuals possessed certain natural rights such as life, liberty, and property (Greene, 96). It was the responsibility of the government to protect those inalienable rights. When Britain began imposing sanctions that limited the colonists natural rights, it violated its responsibility to its dependents. Therefore, Locke s theory provided an intellectual justification for resistance to British authority. Furthermore, Locke believed that if the government failed in preserving the natural rights of the individual then rebellion is justified (Greene, 96). Due to the development of powerful colonial cities, the end of salutary neglect of the colonies by Britain, and the increasing tension between Britain and the colonies, the American Revolution was inevitable. What was once considered a territory of rural communities and towns grew to states consisting of large urban cities. As the society of the states became more complex and integrated, dependence upon the parent country began to dwindle. As the states matured, their inhabitants were no ...
