Theme Of Irony In Cannery Row

The Irony of Cannery Row
The book Cannery Row by John Steinbeck provides several examples of irony, which shed light on
life during this time in history and demonstrates the humanity of people that are traditionally
looked down on and seen as less fortunate. The story of Cannery Row takes place shortly following
the Great Depression when despite many areas were seeing relief through increased job
opportunities, there were still many areas like Cannery Row where people were focused on just
surviving the day today. A common theme seen throughout the story is the acceptance of what they
have in the town. Many of the examples of irony also lend to the idea that people accepted what

Despite his lack of a medical license or ability to practice medicine, everyone goes to him when
they need help. They do not have the luxury of finding a real doctor or going to an actual hospital,
so they full heartedly accept what is available to them without question. Accepting what is available
without question is a common theme seen throughout the story.
The normality of public spaces being used as private spaces also demonstrates the theme of
acceptance. The character of Doc is ironic and fits well with the story because he is a doctor
without a license. By normal standards, this would be unacceptable, and he would be imprisoned
for offering medical help or advice without a license.Doc knows that he has somewhat of
reasonability to the people of cannery row. This responsibility being to help aide them with
whatever their ailments may be. Steinbeck depicts Doc in such a way that you see his vast amounts
of compassion and humanity throughout the book.
Dora was another essential character, who was considered a successful business owner. She ran the
brothel located across the street from the grocery store. She was well respected for many reasons.
Namely, she ran a good business, she didn t accept or allow vulgar talk, and she took care of her
girls (Steinbeck 10). No matter how old her girls got or how little they were able to work, she took
care of them and made sure they had a place to stay and three meals a day (Steinbeck

Scarlet Fever Research Paper
Disease: Scarlet fever
B. Scarlet fever is an acute and communicable disease. The symptoms associated with scarlet fever
are a red rash that feels like sandpaper, a sore throat, and a high fever. It is a disease that mainly
affects children who are 5 15 years old, but anyone can get scarlet fever. (CDC, 2017). Scarlet fever
is acquired through a bacterial infection caused by group A strep (CDC, 2017). This group A strep
is the same bacteria that causes strep throat (CDC, 2017). The fever is acquired when Group A
strep bacteria inhabits a person s nose and throat. Scarlet fever is caused by group A strep
bacteria that is able to be transmitted through contact with droplets from an infected person s
sneeze or cough (CDC, 2017). In addition, it could also spread when a person drinks from the
same glass or eats from the same plate as the person who is ill (CDC, 2017). This means that
scarlet fever can be transmitted in an airborne or vehicle borne way. Taken from a publication in the

Treatment: With scarlet fever, prevention is more important than intervention because there is no
vaccine for scarlet fever. If someone is infected with scarlet fever, a doctor can prescribe
antibiotics which help clear up symptoms faster and reduce spread to other people (CDC, 2010).
Antibiotics are useful because there help get rid of scarlet fever faster.

The Transformational Leadership Model Of A Business...
There are several different theories that can be applied to leadership. Hence, there are no right or
wrong theories, purely just diverse perceptions. The trait theory of leadership believes that leaders
are born and not made. This theory claims that leadership is inherited, and great leaders are born
with natural leadershiptraits. Zaccaro, S. J. (2007) defines this as a unique property of
extraordinary individuals whose decisions are capable of sometimes radically changing the
streams of history [Pg6]. On the other hand, Kendra Cherry (2015) describes the
transformational leadership model as a type of leadership style that can inspire positive changes
in those who follow. Elon Musk; founder, CEO and CTO of SpaceX, co founder, CEO and
product architect of Tesla Motors and co founder of PayPal is a prime example of the
transformational leadership model (Jeremy Unruh, 2016). This essay will describe and critique the
trait based approach to leadership, giving examples of how it can be used in a business environment
and then giving a compared and contrasted view against the transformational leadership model.
Kendra Cherry (2016) describes the trait based approach to leadership as different personality traits
and characteristics that are linked to successful leadership across a variety of situations . In addition
Zaccaro, S. J. (2007) has a view that the unique attributes of such individuals in their inherited or
genetic makeup and that personal qualities defining effective

The Inequality Of The American Dream
The American Dream is the idea that any American can raise their socioeconomic status through
hard work . However, for many Americans, that dream has become impossible. Due to economic
hardship, many Americans are struggling to simply provide food for their families. Upward
mobility seems elusive. Despite the fact that some believe the American Dream is still a reality, due
to poor education, unemployment, economic downturn, and economic inequality the American
Dream has become unattainable for most lower and middle class Americans. America has a
massive wealth gap. According to Chris Matthews at Fortune, in America, the wealthiest 160,000
families own as much wealth as the poorest 145 million families. Those rich families can afford to...

Simply put, college graduates are having a hard time finding jobs, and without a well paying job it
is impossible to raise one s economic status in America. When an American graduates from college,
there is a good chance that they will not be able to find employment. This is no surprise, since the
Great Recession and its aftermath is the longest, most severe period of economic weakness in more
than seven decades (Davis, Gould, and Kimball). Economic downturn means fewer available jobs,
especially for those who are just entering the market, as most graduates are. According to the
Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for college graduates is 7.2 percent and the
underemployment rate (the unemployment rate combined with the rate of people currently
employed part time but seeking full time work) is 14.9 percent. Due to the poor economic situation
in America, many graduates are unable to take the two main paths receiving further education or
getting more work experience that enable future career success (Davis, Gould, and Kimball). How

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Essay examples
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Emily Jane Bronte was born on July 30, 1818 in Thorton,
Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of Patrick, an Anglican clergyman, and Maria Bronte.
Emily lived with her parents, sisters Charlotte and Anne, and brother Patrick Branwell. Two other
sisters, Elizabeth and Maria, died while Emily was very young. Mrs. Bronte also died while
Emily was young, in 1821. Mr. Bronte and an aunt, Elizabeth Branwell, raised the surviving
children. They were educated at home and spent much of their time reading and writing. Charlotte
and Emily spent a year at the Clergy Daughters School in Lancashire. Charlotte received a job

It was considered hostile, savage, animal like, and poorly developed. Now Wuthering Heights is
considered one of the greatest novels in the English language. Soon after the publication of the
novel Emily became ill, and her health failed rapidly. She complained of difficulty of breathing.
Emily Bronte died of tuberculosis in Haworth on December 19, 1848. Wuthering Heights is a
powerful tale of passion, hatred, and revenge. It deals with two families, the Earnshaws and
Lintons, living in the moorlands of England. Mr. and Mrs. Earnshaw have a son, Hindley, and a
daughter, Catherine. One day while in Liverpool Mr. Earnshaw picks up a homeless boy and
brings him home with him, to Wuthering Heights. The abandoned boy is named Heathcliff.
Heathcliff becomes a close friend of Catherine s but as he becomes Mr. Earnshaw s favorite
Hindley becomes jealous and begins to abuse him. Hindley eventually goes to college, leaving
Catherine and Heathcliff at Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff falls deeply in love with Catherine,
and she develops feelings towards him as well. However, one day while the two were visiting the
nearby Thrushcross Grange Catherine was bitten by a dog. Her ankle is injured so badly that she
is forced to spend the next five weeks at the Grange with the Lintons. She spends most of her time
with the Linton s children, Edgar and Isabella, and becomes more dignified

Legalizing Marijuana Debate
Legalizing marijuana has become a controversial and highly debated topic. More specifically, the
question under investigation is will the taxation of marijuana provide relief for our Connecticut s
budget crisis and shortfalls. Legalizing marijuana has been a topic of conversation more and more
as the year s pass. First, it started off with decriminalizing marijuana to provide relief to the justice
system. Recently there have several states, including Colorado, Washington, and Oregon who have
legalized the use and sale of marijuana to provide revenue for the state. It is anticipated that
Colorado marijuana taxwill yield more than $140 million in 2016 (Ekins and Henchman, 2016).

Marijuana tax would be implemented similarly to the way taxes are imposed on alcohol and

The Birchbark House Summary
The Birchbark House is a story that portrays the life of a young Ojibwa Native American girl,
Omakayas. During the cycle of the four seasons, Omakayas comes to a greater understanding of
life, herself, and the relationship between the two. Throughout the year s events, the spiritual
connection between humans and nature, the necessity of confronting ones fears and the values:
courage, and loyalty are all explored. The story starts out with a short prologue that describes
how a baby girl is abandoned by a group of fur traders because they are afraid of being infected
with smallpox, a disease that killed everyone else in the Ojibwa community. One of the fur traders

Omakayas anger at her brother Pinch, the narrative shifts to Pinch s point of view: It was hard

Theme Of No Man Is An Island
No Man is an Island We are all a part of the main
No person is truly isolated from the rest of the world. Nonetheless, people feel lonely or
purposeless in life. In No Man Is an Island by John Donne, he claims that no person is an island of
their own. Donne talks about humanity, unity, and mortality, which originate from his illness, and
the recent death of his wife for whom the bell tolls. (12) Through the use of an extended earth
metaphor, symbols, and shift in tone, Donne conveys the importance of humankind and life.
(Mention something about his deceased wife, and him being terminally ill)
Donne starts off this poem with an extended earth metaphor. No man is an island, entire of itself;
(1). This line is used to open the poem with a strong statement. This line helps begin the extended
by stating that no individual is completely isolated. Donne continues this into next lines, every man

This weighed on his mind and was the cause of inspiration for this poem. Donne believed that
everyone matters; whether you were rich or poor. No matter what class you were sectioned into,
you had an effect on the rest of the people around you. In this poem, Donne is able to convey his
belief that everyone matters, no matter how insignificant they seem, with the help of an extended
earth metaphor, symbols, and shift in tone. He uses an extended metaphor where he compares the
different groups of people to earthy symbols, and as he continues through the sections, he writes
more individually. This shift in tone helps the audience feel more connected to the words because
Donne is speaking in first person, making it more personal. This personal message is absorbed by
the reader through the help of symbols, which make it easier for the reader to connect and relate to
the mean of the poem. Everyone has a purpose and makes an

Why I Should Not Get Better Grades
I have a grown up surrounded by the bookkeeping, accounting, and tax preparation professions, as
my father has held his CPA for nearly 40 years and my parents operate two successful income tax
preparation offices. While in college, I eventually chose to complete a degree in finance, wanting to
branch away from accounting while still being able to take advantage of the knowledge gained
from my upbringing. However, after having experienced multiple professions, my current
employment as a contractor in Chesapeake Energy s accounting department has inspired me to
pursue furthering my education.
As you ll see in from my transcripts, my undergraduate grades were not consistently stellar with
my average GPA being under a 3.0. While I did support myself through college with full time
employment, I do believe that I should have been able to earn better grades more consistently
while completing my undergraduate degree. My impression of that time in my life was that I
lacked the ability to manage my time and I wasn t able to focus on multiple goals. After starting
a career in real estate, I began to regret the lack of focus that I had while completing my degree. I
wanted to prove to myself that I could manage my time wisely and do well in my career while
furthering my education so, nearly two years after completing my bachelor s degree; I enrolled into
an online master s in finance degree with Kaplan University. While working 45 50 hours a week as

Advantages Of Pair Programming
PAIR PROGRAMMING IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY
Abstract:
Software industry is examining the agile software development methodologies by adopting them
to few of its software projects. Industry, particularly those following the eXtreme Programming
(XP) methodology, has popularized the use of pair programming. Developers often require
several days to become familiar and comfortable with the dynamics and practices of pair
programming when transitioning from solo programming. Extended pair programming sessions
can be difficult for developers because pairing can be mentally exhausting due to the rapid pace a
pair can work at and the constant focus on the task at hand. Often software engineers feel pair

3. The perception that pair programming produces higher quality code at the expense of more time
compared with solo programming
Challenges:
Software organization can be concerned that pair programming will double software development
cost as two programmers are working on one task. The management should be enlightened with the
research and experiential results of the use of pair programming. Again, the practice can be started
on a small scale which would cause only a minimal economic risk. The management can gain first
hand understanding that the practice does not cause product lifecycle cost of increase, particularly
when the benefits of improved quality are considered.
The navigator in real time checks the code being written, on standards, optimal solution, duplicate
or re use of code, naming etc. These are tasks that a single programmer will also do, on top of
merely writing code. It is why pair programming has no higher cost than single programming.
Because no more activities than a single programmer would do are being performed. But instead
of those activities being done in a serial way, they are now being performed in a parallel

Desmond Doss Is A Hero
What makes a human being a hero? What defines men and women from being a hero or just
another person? Nobody really knows the answer to these questions. But I have concluded that the
modern day hero that I have chosen is a brave man that put others lives before his own and to me
that defines a hero. Desmond Doss was a United StatesArmy corporal who served as a combat
medic with infantry company in World War Two. After our allies pulled off hacksaw ridge he
stayed and continued to retrieve bodies and bring the injured to safety. He saved 75 men in total in
just this one battle. For actions like this he was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal, and awarded
the Medal of Honor. Desmond Doss enlisted into the United States Army in April 1942, but
refused to kill or even carry a weapon because of his religious beliefs as a Seventh Day
Adventist. This choice to go into combat without a weapon proved to be a difficult belief for his
fellow soldiers to comprehend. He was treated badly and even threatened by a man in his
barracks that warned him, Doss, as soon as we get into combat, I ll make sure you won t come
back alive. His commanding officer also wanted to get rid of Doss as he say him as a liability.
Nobody thought a solder with no weapon would be worth anything in battle. He soon proved his
disbelievers wrong. Things started to turn around for Doss as the men that gave him a hard time
realized that he would help them no matter the conditions. The men realized Doss had a

The Role Played by the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) in the East Timorese
Efforts to Achieve Independence
Introduction
East Timor (also called Timor Leste in Portuguese) is a country in Southeast Asia. It was a
Portuguese colony from the 16th century up until Portugal s decolonisation in 1975. In 1976
Timor Leste was invaded by Indonesia who sought to expand its territory. This lead to the
development of long guerrilla warfare between the East Timorese who wanted their independence
and the Indonesian troops who suppressed the East Timorese efforts to independence. This struggle
for independence lasted from 1976 until 1999. This led to the deaths of a third of the East Timorese
population due to conflict related ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
INTERFRET withdrew from Timor Leste in February 2000. UNTAET oversaw the democratic
elections held in 2001 and East Timorese independence was official in May 2002.
This topic is of significance because the humanitarian intervention in Timor Leste is regarded as a
prime example of how the use of force by the international community can lead to peace in a
country. In the Timor Leste case the theory of humanitarian intervention is put into practice. As the
peacekeeping forces helped the self determination efforts by the East Timorese by rapidly helping to
quell the violence, and control the civil unrest after the referendum. The humanitarian intervention
in Timor Leste under the aegis of Australia is a worthy case study of a multinational intervention. It
is of great relevance for students of international relations to assess the reasons for the intervention
and also it is important to explore its short and long term effects.
The main research question of this paper is to what extent the International Force for East Timor
(INTERFET) play a role in the East Timorese efforts to achieve independence. This will be
explained in the following chapters. The first chapter examines the circumstances that led to the
Humanitarian Intervention in Timor Leste. Before examining the circumstances that led to
intervention in Timor Leste, in this chapter the concept of

The first rank is the private rank which is what new recruits start at and is the lowest rank. The
rank is gained after the individual has completed their initial basic training. A private s main

The Foundation of Orthodoxy and the Canon
God is the Divine Author of a set of books, songs, narratives and letters that were written as a way
for man to draw nearer to Him through His loving Son Jesus the Christ. God s Word is an
expression of who God is and who His Son is. J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays wrote a book
called Grasping God s Word. Within this book, the authors inspire their readers by giving a
detailed reason why we study the Bible. They say, The reason we study the Bible is that we want

Those declared inspired were of two basic categories of both eyewitness accounts of the Messiah
(the Gospels), and letters from key witnesses written to various groups of believers (the Epistles).
Concentrated effort was made to establish the authoritative collection of inspired books of the
Bible into the Canon during the fourth century; however, there had been earlier attempts to list the
acceptable books. The Muratorian Canon had listed all the books of the Bible except for 1 John, 1
and 2 Peter, Hebrews and James around A.D. 180, and the Syriac Version of the Canon lists all of
the books except Revelation in the third century. The apocryphal writings were seen as less than
inspired by the fourth century, and many of the books previously held in high regard were
beginning to disappear, as the formal establishment of Canon began. Both the East and the West
Churches established their Canons in the fourth century on the criterion of maintaining a
connection to the apostles or their immediate disciples in the collection of writings. Athanasius of
Alexandria listed the complete 27 books of the New Testament for the Eastern Church, while
Jerome listed just 39 Old Testament books with our present day 27 New Testament ones for the
West Church. The resulting VulgateBible, translated by Jerome to Latin, was used throughout the
Christian world. The Synods of Carthage confirmed the 27 books of the New Testament of

The Age Of The Robot Warrior Machine
The age of the robot warrior machine is looming, and it will represent monumental changes in the
future conduct of war. Increased precision and decreased risk make the automation of warriors
politically and militarily attractive. Government and military leaders will have to address the
numerous moral and ethical questions about when, where and how to utilize these lifeless soldiers.
To answer similar questions in the past, many leaders relied on the military theory from the
Prussian theorist Carl Von Clausewitzbook On War. Even though his theories have proven helpful
in the past, can the ideas written in the 1800 s, truly be useful when applied to such drastic changes
in the future conduct of war?
Clausewitz military genius is immutable. Even though his writings are almost two hundred years
old, the application of Carl Von Clausewitz theories on war are relevant for today and in the future.
Technological advancements will present unique challenges, but as long as the true nature of war
remains unaffected, his paradoxical trinity will continue to provide visionary insight and value to
future leaders attempting to address wars most difficult questions. The distinction between absolute
vs. real war and his theories on the relationship between war and politics, and the concept of
friction remain timeless. What we are really dealing with is another change in the character of war
which Clausewitz has helped leaders deal with in the past and will again in the future.

True Grit , which is an artistic remake by the Coen brothers of the 1969 film of the same title by

somewhat dodging from anything ostentatious, that could get in the way in highlighting the star
appeal of actors in the film and distorting its emphasis on the eye for eye western sense of justice.
With better technology and techniques, the Coen version used different photographic effects and
colour schemes that created a more dead beat gothic appearance that contributes to its lacklustre,
indifferent and hard bitten theme and ending. The visual approach is further complemented by
varying musical backgrounds. Whereas the 1969 version exhibited the more buoyant optimistic
style of most 60 s films, highlighted by folksy pop ballad of Glenn Campbell, the musical score
for the modern version is way more dismal and sober in tone in order to emphasize thrilling
adventure of the story instead of merely suggesting a western film genre. While the older version
merely focused on creating a western ambiance in terms of music and look, the visual and music in
the modern version contributed to improve the realism of the story which focused on the ambiance
and feeling of specific scenes to the film which is more palatable to modern

My Defining Moment Analysis
I think as doctors and nurses, most of us have had that defining moment in our lives when we
knew we were supposed to be in medicine. For me, that moment was about twenty years ago. I
was outside helping my mom in the front yard. She was pushing a lawnmower and tripped over
a root. She fell hard to the ground splitting her knee open to the bone. I ran inside the house; not
to get my dad, but to go get a towel and bandages to stop the bleeding. I begged and pleaded with
my mother to let me come with her to the ER. Reluctantly she gave in and agreed to let me come.
From the moment I walked in the door, I was fascinated with everything I saw. The doctors and
nursing scurrying around, the lights, the sounds; I couldn t soak it up fast enough. I must have
asked that poor ER... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

wash it out). I remember watching him, and not wanting to leave the ER that night. It was at that
point I knew that I wanted to work in medicine.
Fast forward twenty years and my love for medicine has not changed; in fact I think it has only
deepened. I started working in a high intensity medical ICU over three years ago, and have never
looked back. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to say that I truly love my job. My face

People shouldn t want to move to the suburbs just to have that modernity because it can result to

Proverbs in Things Fall Apart
Proverbs are wise sayings that address the heart of the discourse in any given context, truthfully and
objectively. In Africa and in Nigerian cultures especially, they are considered the reliable horses,
which convey meanings to their destinations or hearts of the listeners. This study investigates
aspects of the meaning of proverbs in the work of a Nigerian author, Achebe s Things Fall Apart. It
is contended that meanings of Nigerian proverbs can be worked out within the semantic, referential,
ideational, stimulus response, realist and contextual theories. Types of meaning and proverbs are

The Giver, And The Real World
When considering the similarities between Lois Lowry s novel, The Giver, and the real world;
one must consider all aspects of our domain, and history. A few similarities stand out as being
predominantly controlling. The Giver, possesses several resemblances to Nazi Germany. The
novel also portrays an appalling method for dealing with newborns that are less desirable. The
novel also reflects on the way those who are too old are sent on a vacation to elsewhere. The
novel leads one to assume that the handicapped would be met with equal cruelty. The story
primarily sets forth ideas that are relevant of the era; when politically correctness would have
been obstructing to an individual s uniqueness. There reaches a point where conformity and
perfection is controlling of an individual s free will, and Lowry tries hard to portray the issues
found in a world where everyone is the same; in which she indisputably succeeded. First of all, the
story of, The Giver, has many similarities to the founding principles of Nazi Germany. Such as the
extermination of all who oppose their rule. As well as the destruction of any that are unfit to
work and pull their own weight. The retirement program in The Giver is a release. In Nazi
Germany we see the same idea, being those who can and will work get to live, and those who are of
no use to the Reich were executed.

The sonnet goes on about talking how real love is more sincere than the representation of woman s
physical appearance as perfection. Beauty fades away in time, and Shakespeare is curious about
his mistress s personality and character that caused him to truly love her. Shakespeare claims
that his lover doesn t represent a perfect beauty: My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun /If
hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head (1,3). His comparisons are undesirable and
unemotional, but afterward, he proves that his mistress outstands any goddess with a perfect
appearance. I grant I never saw a goddess go;/ My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
(11 12). In these two lines, Shakespeare is stating the facts and is being straightforward. He
proves to us that her lover is nothing like a goddess, she doesn t have any extraordinary skills,
she just walks like a normal human being. Shakespeare s relationship with his mistress is deeper
than a physical appearance. He portrays the woman in a realistic way. He doesn t use positive
terms to praise her, but he uses simple expressions to show the reality of his love. If snow be

Simeon and Levi grew through both their experiences of violence and faith. Eventually they
repented their sins they brought upon Joseph, their brother. The most significant aspect of their
personalities is their zeal for cruelty and violence. In the Testament of the Patriarchs, it is
understood that God came to both the Simeonites and Levites discussing their enthusiasm for
violence. Eventually, even though warned by Simeon, the Simeonites could not overcome their
obsession of cruelty and violence. Therefore, the Simeonites numbers eventually decreased and they
were finally absorbed into the Judahites. The Levites, on the other hand, overcame their zeal for
cruelty and violence by focusing their fixation towards God thereby becoming a holy priesthood.
Through passages in the bible and the Testament of the Patriarchs, Simeon and Levi were
characterized as cruel, rash and violent leaders who were considered righteous in their vengeance of
Shechem. But they made many dishonest and immoral decisions such as enslaving Joseph. Even
though they made these dishonest decisions, the Levites were able to sustain and thrive as a holy

very clear picture of subversive forces at work compelling the consumer to make purchasing

facts, however, indicate that much of the positions of Keys and Vicary are, at best, hyperbole. The
president of the Psychological Corporation, Dr. Henry Link challenged Vicary to reproduce his

No Truth in Story telling
Margaret Atwood gives voice to Penelope, one of antiquity s most infamous heroines, so that she
can tell her story at last and set the record straight once and for all (Canongate). The quotation
printed at the back of The Penelopiad gives a concise motivation why Margaret Atwood writes the
book: Atwood uses Penelope s voice to tell the readers how she is wronged in Homer s Odyssey.
Although the narrator Penelope dominates the book, the twelve hanged maids also interpose their
own opinion in prose and rhymes. However, it is not hard for the readers to find out that the two
perspectives contradict one another, the maids voice is often used as a counterpoint to Penelope s,

Studies have determined that students use of alcohol is shaped, to some extent; by how much they

particular age group that statistically has the highest rate of binge drinking. According to the

students in Wisconsin and California. Having attended higher education in each state, I will try to
gain a better understanding as to why there is a higher level of binge drinking among college
students in Wisconsin than California. I will look at significant themes such as underage drinking,
adult binge drinking, and certain alcohol related policies in both states to show that there is a
correlation between the aforementioned variables and college binge drinking.

Sociologists in Wisconsin have for years tried to determine why alcohol is so engrained in that
state s culture. Sociologists concede that Climate, ethnicity, the historical significance of the
brewing business, a relative lack of newcomers who would want to reform lenient laws, as well
as the social nature of drinking in general are all possible explanations (Milwaukee Journal

How Do Recreational Drugs Affect People
Psychology Drugs Project 2017 Script
Today I am going to present a poster that I made on recreational drugs which includes examples of

recreational drugs .
Recreational drugs refer to chemical substances that can cause changes to your mind. This is a
psychoactive drug that affect people psychologically by changing their sensory perception, moods,
thinking and behaviour. Recreational drugs can cause changes in mind because they are literally
impacting the functions of neurotransmitters. These chemical substances are not used for medical
reasons, instead they are used for leisurely purposes. Recreational drugs are divided into three
groups which are stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens.
Firstly, stimulants are also known as the uppers , this drug temporally increase the alertness and
energy of the body so it can work faster. The second type of the recreational drug is depressants.

searching for the presence of nature when returning to the Wye. He remembered when he used
to wander and roam as free as a roe but as he matured he felt content with tapping into his
memories of his youth because as Wordsworth stated, That time is past? other gifts have

I know that some people might say the states can provide an identification card at free of charge,

not true. This solution would be a no win situation for both sides in terms of money. Many
citizens would find it hard to get an ID or even if it is free because in order to obtain a free
identification, those people still would have to submit some sorts of required papers, like birth

Family Tree Flake Research Paper
The ability to make and use tools dates back millions of years in our family tree. Chimpanzees,
our closest living relatives, can on their own devise spear like weapons for hunting and create

Essay on Kierkegaards View on Faith
Kierkegaards View on Faith
Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher in the mid 1800s. He is known to be the father of
existentialism and was at least 70 years ahead of his time. Kierkegaard set out to attack Kant s
rational ethics and make attacks on the Christianity of our day. He poses the question, how do we
understand faith? He states that faith equals the absurd. In Fear and Trembling , he uses the story
of Abraham and his son Isaac to show an example of faith as the absurd. The story of God asking
Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac signifies a break in the theory that ethics and religion go hand in

whether he can come to an amicable agreement in this respect is a matter between himself and the
eternal being, who is the object of faith (Fear and Trembling, 21). Only the individual can decide.
To him, faith was absurd because you have to step out of your universal, surd self and make the
leap into the absurdity of faith. In conclusion, Kierkegaard decides that faith is paradoxical and
completely absurd. He also concludes that it has nothing to do with the ethical realm of reason
and is actually much higher. In order to perceive the prodigious paradox of faith, a paradox that
makes a murder into a holy and God pleasing act, a paradox that gives Isaac back to Abraham
again, which no thought can grasp, because faith begins precisely where thought stops... (Fear and
Trembling, 22).

The Body Theory And Its Strength And Weaknesses
Am I the same person today as I was yesterday? Will I be the same person a few years from now
as I am now? Kagan explains a few theories that can help with figuring out what makes me, me.
There is the soul theory, the body theory, and the personality theory. The body theory consists of
the brain and body theory and the torso and body theory. After looking into each theory carefully
through Kagan s lectures, I found that there were flaws in all three theories. The theory that I
favor, however, is the body theory and more specifically the brainaspect of that theory. In my essay
I will discuss why I favor the body theory and its strength and weaknesses. I will also discuss Kagan
s take on survival.
To start with, the body theory is not mysterious like the soul theory. If I believed in souls, and
favored the soul theory, how could I prove that I did not get a new soul every five hours or three
days? I would not be able to. The body theory means having the same body. This also means
having most of your same body. For example, in Star Wars when Luke Skywalker got his hand cut
off, he still had most of his body; therefore, he is the same person.
Now there are some problems with this theory as Kagan points out. The problem is resurrection.
There is no current proof of a body being resurrected from the ground, but there is a possibility of
bodily resurrection that cannot be denied. The issue with bodily resurrection is that it draws the
question, is the resurrected body really

When markets decline, purchasing orientations come behind directly and consequently pressure
on the company s bottom line is being put. Another important factor is the Socio cultural .
According to ( Chidrawar and Kramer ,2009 ) the company has been achieving successful
progress in its overseas operations by following the efficient trade practices. These commercial
conducts have greatly aided the company to evolve and improve its ties and fame with the
consumers , staff and with the authorities. The income standard of families of both developing
and developed countries which host the company is different. This difference in the income
level of the families of host countries influence the business process of the firm to a great
extent.Costco s strong profits are due to well established economies of scale, which are achieved
by showing about 4000 items in its stores. It is concluded that Costca is a company that has a
stable economic position . Cultural diversity is an important factor in the business culture of
Costco and its work force which comes from different countries and this represents the key to its
successful work relations. The women clerks are given more chances in the company. It was
reported that not only above fifty percent of its employees and its operation staff are women but
also the company assists several organizations in favour of women (Pagell Halperin, 2000).Also,
income levels in various cultures greatly influence how Costco ranks is in the market . The

Reality Vs. Illusion
For those in love with an illusion often refuse to accept the reality by Sanal Edamaruku. Illusions
make the reality almost impossible to see, the theme of illusion vs. reality occurs many times in
Fitzgerald s novel. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the reader observes many
of the characters living in an illusionary world, however, through one character, the reader can
discern authenticity.
Throughout the novel, the reader perceive Jay Gatsby, as a main and one of the many characters,
who are living in an imaginary world, far away from the the reality. Gatsby, who could not even
stay true to himself, changed his identity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick s dreams are simple and real, instead of creating an illusionary world around himself, he
stays true to himself throughout the novel. He states, I decided to go to East and learn the bond
business, ( Fitzgerald 3). Nick, simply wants to be in bond business so he can identify himself
and stay honest and true to himself. He is surrounded by all the riches and still he does not
relinquish his veracity, in attempt to become affluent. Nick says, I am one of few honest people
I have ever known, (Fitzgerald 59), the reader observes Nick as one of the most honest person
throughout the novel. At the end of the novel, the reader visually perceives how Nick leaves the
East after Gatsby s death, Nick states After Gatsby s death, East was hunted for me, ( Fitzgerald
185). Nick thought of East as a place for prosperity but he lefts when he sees the reality of East, a
dark place, full of evil and corruption, where happiness does not exist unless one is living in an
illusionary world. All people want is success without caring how to get that money and success.
Nick represents veracity in Fitzgerald s novel, he is the only one living in the real

  • 2. Theme Of Irony In Cannery Row Lauren Skalet ENG 101 Ms.Hoelle December 12, 2017 The Irony of Cannery Row The book Cannery Row by John Steinbeck provides several examples of irony, which shed light on life during this time in history and demonstrates the humanity of people that are traditionally looked down on and seen as less fortunate. The story of Cannery Row takes place shortly following the Great Depression when despite many areas were seeing relief through increased job opportunities, there were still many areas like Cannery Row where people were focused on just surviving the day today. A common theme seen throughout the story is the acceptance of what they have in the town. Many of the examples of irony also lend to the idea that people accepted what was in ... They do not have the luxury of finding a real doctor or going to an actual hospital, so they full heartedly accept what is available to them without question. Accepting what is available without question is a common theme seen throughout the story. The normality of public spaces being used as private spaces also demonstrates the theme of acceptance. The character of Doc is ironic and fits well with the story because he is a doctor without a license. By normal standards, this would be unacceptable, and he would be imprisoned for offering medical help or advice without a license.Doc knows that he has somewhat of reasonability to the people of cannery row. This responsibility being to help aide them with whatever their ailments may be. Steinbeck depicts Doc in such a way that you see his vast amounts of compassion and humanity throughout the book. Dora was another essential character, who was considered a successful business owner. She ran the brothel located across the street from the grocery store. She was well respected for many reasons. Namely, she ran a good business, she didn t accept or allow vulgar talk, and she took care of her girls (Steinbeck 10). • 4. The Transformational Leadership Model Of A Business... There are several different theories that can be applied to leadership. Hence, there are no right or wrong theories, purely just diverse perceptions. The trait theory of leadership believes that leaders are born and not made. This theory claims that leadership is inherited, and great leaders are born with natural leadershiptraits. Zaccaro, S. J. (2007) defines this as a unique property of extraordinary individuals whose decisions are capable of sometimes radically changing the streams of history [Pg6]. On the other hand, Kendra Cherry (2015) describes the transformational leadership model as a type of leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. Elon Musk; founder, CEO and CTO of SpaceX, co founder, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors and co founder of PayPal is a prime example of the transformational leadership model (Jeremy Unruh, 2016). This essay will describe and critique the trait based approach to leadership, giving examples of how it can be used in a business environment and then giving a compared and contrasted view against the transformational leadership model. Kendra Cherry (2016) describes the trait based approach to leadership as different personality traits and characteristics that are linked to successful leadership across a variety of situations . But I have concluded that the modern day hero that I have chosen is a brave man that put others lives before his own and to me that defines a hero. Desmond Doss was a United StatesArmy corporal who served as a combat medic with infantry company in World War Two. After our allies pulled off hacksaw ridge he stayed and continued to retrieve bodies and bring the injured to safety. He saved 75 men in total in just this one battle. A few similarities stand out as being predominantly controlling. The Giver, possesses several resemblances to Nazi Germany. The novel also portrays an appalling method for dealing with newborns that are less desirable. The novel also reflects on the way those who are too old are sent on a vacation to elsewhere. The novel leads one to assume that the handicapped would be met with equal cruelty. The story primarily sets forth ideas that are relevant of the era; when politically correctness would have been obstructing to an individual s uniqueness. There reaches a point where conformity and perfection is controlling of an individual s free will, and Lowry tries hard to portray the issues found in a world where everyone is the same; in which she indisputably succeeded. Beauty fades away in time, and Shakespeare is curious about his mistress s personality and character that caused him to truly love her. He is known to be the father of existentialism and was at least 70 years ahead of his time. Kierkegaard set out to attack Kant s rational ethics and make attacks on the Christianity of our day. He poses the question, how do we understand faith? He states that faith equals the absurd. In Fear and Trembling , he uses the story of Abraham and his son Isaac to show an example of faith as the absurd. The last stage to pass from his view is the stage of infinite resignation. He actually goes further and comes to faith (Fear and Trembling, 14). Kierkegaard also revealed that to have faith, you must have passion which is not something we can learn, we must experience it for ourselves. No general or universal rules apply to our choice of what to believe. Whether a person has the right to say this must be his own decision; whether he can come to an amicable agreement in this respect is a matter between himself and the eternal being, who is the object of faith (Fear and Trembling, 21). Only the individual can decide. To him, faith was absurd because you have to step out of your universal, surd self and make the leap into the absurdity of faith. In conclusion, Kierkegaard decides that faith is paradoxical and completely absurd. He also concludes that it has nothing to do with the ethical realm of reason and is actually much higher. The body theory consists of the brain and body theory and the torso and body theory. After looking into each theory carefully through Kagan s lectures, I found that there were flaws in all three theories. The theory that I favor, however, is the body theory and more specifically the brainaspect of that theory. In my essay I will discuss why I favor the body theory and its strength and weaknesses.
