The American Red Cross Disaster Services Team
Introduction Throughout the semester, I have been able to volunteer for the American Red Cross
Disaster Services Team. This has been one of the most beneficial volunteer opportunities that I
have ever accomplished. As an American Red Cross of Georgia Major Gift Officer, this volunteer
experience allowed me to gain knowledge in a department that serves as the backbone of the
American Red Cross. As a nonprofit fundraiser, it is difficult to truly see the mission that your
team raises money for every single day. Fundraisers at the American Red Cross are trained as
sales people, and before this volunteer experience I had never even been on a Red Cross disaster
response call. Throughout the duration of the semester, I was able to gain true insight into the core
of the organization and mission. This opportunity allowed me to not only enhance my career at the
American Red Cross, but gave me a 360 degree view of the entire organization and the
fundamentals of the Red Cross mission.
Red Cross Mission and History The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to
those in need primarily during times of disaster. The American Red Cross mission is to prevent
and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers
and the generosity of donors (American Red Cross). The organization focuses on five key service
areas:
1.People affected by disasters in America
2.Support for members of the military and their families

Red Tides Research Paper
Although many Karenia species have been described as of yet, K. brevis blooms move based on
winds and tides; pinpointing a red tide at specific moment is difficult. Algal blooms can occur at
any time of year, but usually increase between September and February. K. brevis is the main
producer of brevetoxin, which is a powerful toxin. It has killed millions of marine organisms, and
mostly occurred in gulfs and coast. It happened in the Gulf of Mexico primarily, especially on the
Western Gulf coastal area of Florida. Although uncommon, it occurred in other parts of the Gulf as
well, such as the Texas coast and Indian River Lagoon on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The reasons
for red tides are not completely clear, and bloom dynamics, include... Show more content on

Preventive measures attempt to stop blooms from occurring, minimize their incidence or limit their
extent. The most effective way to prevent adverse health effects to humans from the red tides is to
prevent exposure to the toxins and organisms. Lowering the amount of nutrients that are discharged
into local watersheds is a top priority for prevention advocates that engage in red tide debates.
Reduced nutrient loads will improve water quality throughout watersheds, in addition to lowering
the intensity of terrestrial fluxes when a red tide is in close proximity to the coastline. Reduced
loads may or may not lead to a discernible change in red tide patterns, but they will certainly
improve the health of local watersheds. An important issue that prevention advocates need to
consider, however, is the modalities of reducing nutrient loads and the most appropriate venues for
affecting change. The major sources of local water quality impairment includes domestic and
industrial wastewater, urban and suburban stormwater, agricultural runoff and hydrological
changes. Local water quality problems could be associated with domestic and industrial point
sources but stricter regulatory controls and new wastewater treatment technologies have
substantially reduced pollution from these sources. Non point sources now account for most of the
water quality problems in the state with urban stormwater and agricultural runoff being the
primary concerns. And unlike point source discharges, non point sources are difficult to measure,
monitor and control. In the case of NSP, this means monitoring shellfish beds for organisms and
toxins as well as closing shellfish beds to harvest when specified levels are detected. When
aerosolized red tide reach specific levels, water and air monitoring can detect high levels in the air,
and cause respiratory

Relationship Between The English And The Native Americans
Shayne Chen Mrs. Allen OCO AP US History 27 August 2015 The War of the Change The
relationship between the English and the Native Americans in 1600 to 1700 is one of the most
fluctuating and the most profound relationships in American history. On the one side of the picture,
the harmony between Wampanoag and Puritans even inspires them to celebrate first Thanksgiving ;
while, by contrast, the conflicts between the Pequots and the English urge them to antagonize each
other, and even wage a war. In addition, the mystery of why the European settlers, including
English, become the dominant power in American world, instead of the indigenous people, or
Indians, can be solved from the examination of the relationship. In a variety of ways, the
relationship drastically alters how people think about and relate to the aborigines. Politically, the
relationship changes to establish the supremacy of the English; the English intends to obtain the
land and rules over it. Socially, the relationship changes to present the majority of the English
settlers; the dominating population is mostly the English settlers. Economically, the relationship
changes to obtain the benefit of the English settlers; they gain profit from the massive resource in
America. Therefore, the relationship does, in fact, change to foreshadow the discordance of the two
groups of people. Firstly, the relationship changes in the politics in many ways. To begin with, the
European settlers, the English, crave so much land

Tyranny Of The Masses By Emmerson
In the quote above, Emmerson exhorts the American people to recognize that their vote is not so
insignificant that it holds no impact in an election, but that it is the involvement of each citizen
which ensures true democracy. He acknowledges that as an American citizen, one has both the
power to neglect their votingprivilege, never knowing its true value, and the power to exercise it,
making a small step toward a just future for your country by participating in the democratic
process. Voting allows the participation of all types of a country s individuals to contribute to the
development of their society. However, it is often times beneficial only to a population s majority.
Thomas Jefferson once called this a tyranny of the masses, which

Corporal Punishment Controversy
In 2013, Adrian Peterson, a Minnesota Vikings running back, faced felony charges and indicted by
a jury with reckless injury of a child (Goessling). This incident sparked controversy on the topic of
where the line is drawn between discipline and abuse. Oxford dictionary defines corporal
punishment as: physical punishment, such as caningor flogging. On one hand, many parents argue
that spankingor other corporal punishments are not abusive because it teaches respect and
consequences for bad behavior. However, on the other hand, others maintain that spanking and
other corporal punishments are harmful because it does not teach respect but instead inspires fear
in the child and does not effectively teach them what they did wrong or what they did to deserve
such punishment. Seeing both sides of the argument, I argue that the line between abuse and
discipline is crossed when the punishment causes damage to the child, whether physical or
psychological. I would go on to argue that spanking and other corporal punishments are not ideal
because it does not show the child what he or she did wrong, can escalate into harsher punishment
and borderline abuse, and has been shown to not be effective and can actually cause more
behavioral problems in children.
Parenting is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Children don t come home from the hospital with
an instruction manual and only so much information can be acquired from parenting books at the
local bookstore. Discipline can especially be a hard subject for new parents, considering that there
is no real right way to punish your children for bad behaviors. Spanking is a commonly used
strategy to combat childhood wrongdoing. Spanking has been used as a disciplinary tool in
reportedly 90% of American families (Wolraich et al.). Spanking and corporal punishmenthas a
high prevalence in American society. Although spanking is seen as acceptable by the majority, this
does not mean that spanking is good for the child. Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff, a developmental
psychologist, asserts, There is little research evidence that physical punishment improves in the
long term. In contrast, there is substantial research evidence that physical punishment puts children
at risk for negative

Stephen Crane s The Open Boat Essay
Stephen Crane s The Open Boat
Humanity often tends to see itself as being somehow important in the grand scheme of the
Universe. We speak of fate as if we were put here for some reason, or purpose. We have our
religions, which often serve as an engine to drive our lives and as a means to give meaning to
them. But why do we think of ourselves in such a superior fashion? Do we really matter at all?
Would the Universe stop if we were suddenly taken away? In his short story, The Open Boat,
Stephen Crane shows us a Universe totally unconcerned with the affairs of humankind; it is an
indifferent Universe in which Man has to struggle to survive. The characters in the story come face
to face with this indifference and are nearly overcome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The men, however, seem removed from the clockwork of their surroundings; seperate, but
somehow in the midst of everything happening around them. This indifference causes the men to
feel a certain isolation from nature. They even go as far as to think of the Universe as being
hostile: [The waves were] nervously anxious to do something effective in the way of swamping
boats. (1) This is, however, just normal activity of nature, not any act of agression against Man.
Although the men are pitted against an uncaring sea, they still at this point seem to think their
destinies are controlled by some outside force. Their collective thoughts are given: If I am
going to be drowned if I am going to be drowned if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name
of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and
trees?...If this old ninny woman, Fate, cannot do better than this, she should be deprived of the
management of men s fortunes. (6) It soon dawns on them, though, that there is no fate, no
purpose for their being where they are. It is the realization of this fact that brings the men to the
brink of despair: When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, he at first
wishes to throw bricks at the temple, and he hates deeply the fact that there are no bricks and no
temples. (6) It seems to them that their

Long Term Effects Of Imperialism In South Africa
In the second half of the 19th century, most African countries faced the aggression of the European
imperialism. All African countries were colonized except for Ethiopia and Liberia. South Africa
was one of the main countries that faced imperialism. The Boers, also known as the Dutch
descendents or Dutch farmers, were the first to colonize South Africain 1652. Later on, the British
came and took Cape Colony from the Dutch in 1795. The British at first mainly wanted to
colonize South Africa as it helps her to trade with India by its route. South Africa s temperate
climate, natural resources, and massive minerals attracted Europeans to take it over. Also, South

There were many important positive effects. First of all, there was a huge advance in agriculture.
Early, when the Dutch settled in South Africa, they taught South Africans new farming techniques
that would increase their production. The Dutch, being specialized in farming, introduced new
farming tools to South Africans. The discovery of gold helped the British use gold efficiently as
they made different kinds of jewelry which increased the economy enormously. The British bought
many African slaves to work in the mining industry but this helped them learn new techniques that
would increase their production and resources. The British has actually improved the education in
South Africa. Nowadays, we see British systems in South Africa that are still helping South
Africans to become successful in their lives. The employment rate is increasing and increasing. On
the other hand, there were also negative impacts. The main negative impact is racial discrimination.
The starting of feuds between blacks and whites in the colonization of South Africa are still
happening today in South Africa. Economic exploitation is also a negative impact. The British are

The Oversexualization Of Women In Japanese Anime And Manga
WMST/PHIL 346
The Oversexualizing of
Women in Japanese Anime and Manga The Japanese are a very creative culture which have
produced several fantastic science fiction movies such as Gojira, which was an allegory for the use
of atomic bombs in war to the animated cartoons, known as anime in America, like Space Battleship
Yamato which portrayed the story of all the nations of the planet Earth joining forces to defeat an
alien invasion. Yamato and other animelike Mach A Go Go had female characters in the shows that
were both allies and sometimes love interest to the main characters, but still were depicted as
strong female role models and were drawn with normal features and body types. However, as
time has passed, women in anime have been more and more sexualized and this has had an
effect on how young people look at Japanese culture and women in particular. In this paper, the
effects of this practice will be observed. With the anime boom of the last few years, the way
women have been portrayed in these animated cartoons has been more and more sexualized.
Shows such as Fairy Tale depict the female leads as scantily clad fighters with rather large breast.
Even the youngest girl on the show that is around the age of 11 to 12 is depicted with larger than
normal breast. One of the main reasons for this is the rather strong patriarchal view of women in
Japan that is still there to this day. The article titled A Look at Japanese Feminism and Japanese
Misogyny from the website

The Link Between English Reading And Mathematics
I noted that historically, any link between English reading (Arts) and Mathematics skills (Science)
seems to have been at best a tenuous one. The issue brought into the public domain by C P Snow
(Rede Lecture 1959) where he claimed: The two cultures (Arts and Science) stare at each other with
mutual hostility and dislike... If this state of affairs was reflected in educational establishments of
that time the likelihood of any meaning full cooperation between those engaging in the teaching of
readingcomprehension and mathematics would seem to be very remote indeed.
Thankfully, changes in opinion did occur over time and by the 1990 s interest in children s maths
skills also led to an increase in research into the association between ... Show more content on

He subsequently explains that it is the format for instruction that presents the difficulty. He
demonstrates if a given task is to calculate a mathematical problem and information is presented as
numbers with operational signs sequenced appropriately, children who understand algorithms can
proceed with ease. However, when the mathematical task to answer includes information that is
presented at the outset in words and sentences, pupils must first comprehend the text before they
can use the appropriate algorithmic skill. Obviously then even the best maths students cannot solve
problems they don t fully understand. Fuentes (1998) maintains the narrative of mathematical
problems tends to be compacted where mathematical concepts and relationships are often hidden,
implied or assumed and the pupil is left to expand and extract the true meaning. This is in marked
contrast to the narrative of storybooks which tends to be expansive and elaborate. In addition he
notes that the ambiguity found in the interpretation of for example, a poem may well be applauded
however any ambiguity in maths text interpretation simply means failure.
From research I have encountered thus far I must agree that good reading comprehension is
essential for interpreting mathematical texts. Baker (1995) and Christen and Murphy

Though the Republican Party was founded on pro minority ideals and continued to have the support

1800s and the early 1900s, Republican support weakened among the working class. In addition,
many Americans, including a sizable number of Republicans, believed that American society had
lost its moral fiber. As a result of these factors, many Republicans became affiliated with the

Rueter (1995) provides a detailed look into the world of politics during the civil rights era. Rueter
asserts that prior to the civil rights era, the Republican Party was not as effective in gaining rights
for minorities compared to proposals made by the Democratic Party in the 1960s. He states that it
was clear to minorities that the Democratic Party was more supportive of civil rights versus
Republicans due to their lack of voting support of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting
Rights Act of 1965. Because of this, Republicans were seen as being against minorities due to their
lack of cooperation with the Democratic Party to end segregation and with President Johnson to
allow equal voting rights (240 1). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 barred unequal application of voter
registration requirements, outlawed discrimination in public accommodations engaged in interstate
commerce, encouraged the desegregation of public schools and authorized the U. S. Attorney
General to file suits to force desegregation, authorized the withdrawal of federal funds from
programs which practiced discrimination, and outlawed discrimination in employment in any
business (Loevy 1997, 211 3). According to Klarman (2004) the civil rights movement caused
southerners to cling to the Republican Party and gave the Democratic Party more momentum to
further support minority interests. The Republican Party s inability to quickly

A Brief Note On The South Territory Of Australia
In the Northern Territory of Australia, almost one third of the population is Aboriginal. They also
own almost half the land in the territory, mostly as communities. Most of these communities are
very remote, which doesn t leave very many options for economic growth and development because
of limited infrastructure, environments not conducive to normal agriculture, and the education
levels in regards to reading and math are low (Gorman). Because of this, many of the communities
there are struggling financially, many of the people depending on welfare. Additionally, many of
the public funds that are going to help the indigenous people in Australia are going to the larger
communities, instead of the smaller, more remote ones (Koenig). Because of this, the people in
these remote communities are having to find new ways to provide for themselves as the world
changes around them. In the past, the Aboriginals were primarily foragers. They hunted and
gathered the resources around them. As the country has changed, cutting down on the amount of
land they have available, and the resources on it, they have had to find new ways to supplement
this with other ways to survive and thrive, often selling different forms of art, or allowing outside
companies access to their land to mine minerals for a fee. Several communities have also started
small scale companies that are using local plants in different ways, such as food, food additives,
and botanical medicines (Gorman).

The Between Camp Four And The Summit
Many factors contributed to the bottlenecks between Camp Four and the summit, including: The
fact that no Sherpas left ahead of the climbers to fix ropes to aid in climbing above the Balcony,
which left the climbers waiting while Beidleman, a guide, fixed the ropes; the Taiwanese team,
who were climbing very slowly and all together, making it impossible to pass them, therefore
creating delays for the climbers behind them; and the fact that once the ascent had begun, Hall s
Sherpas were not eager to assist in fixing the ropes, presumably because they were angry that
Fischer s Sherpas were not sharing the workload as had been originally planned.
Krakauer was critical of Boukreev in this section of the climb because Boukreev was not using
supplemental oxygen or a backpack, both of which Krakauer felt he should have had in the case of
an emergency, as Boukreev was a guide, and charged with helping and protecting the clients, an
ability which Krakauer thought was inhibited by this lack of oxygen and supplies, especially
considering how much the high altitude and thin air affects the ability to think clearly.
Just before reaching the summit, despite the fact that he was having difficulty breathing, Krakauer
was actually quite calm but disoriented, and relatively excited about the prospect of reaching the
summit. However, at the moment of his summit, he did not feel the elation that he expected, but
rather apprehension and dread about what he knew to be a difficult descent.

The Simpsons Television Show as a Pop Culture Icon Essay
The definition of the typical American family has changed considerably over time. Ever since
the age of television dawned on American culture, situation comedies have tried to portray the
typical American family in an attempt to reach as many viewers as possible. In the 1950 s, there
was Leave It to Beaver which represented a generic view of the American family during its time.
There was a father whose responsibility was to financially support the family and be a role model
for his children. There was a mother whose job was that of a typical housewife, taking care of the
home and caring for the children. And there were the children who had no responsibilities, except to
respect their parents and listen to their advice when... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The show was all but ignored by the older viewing public, who discounted it as a trashy cartoon.
The consumption (Delingpole) of the program and its messages by the American public when the
show first aired regularly was drastically different than what it is now and what the writers of the
show intended. On face value alone, The Simpsons is not much more than a cartoon about a
middle class family and their ridiculous escapades. But when examined more closely and with a
more objective eye ? consumed as the show?s writers would intend ? one can see that The
Simpsons is truly a comment on American society.
The Simpsons basis, a father, a mother, and three kids, is far from unusual. The typical
American is a blue collar worker not unlike the father, Homer, who works a mindless job at the
local nuclear power plant in the Simpsons hometown of Springfield which is basically Anytown,
USA. Marge, the mother, is a fairly typical housewife besides her large blue beehive hairdo. Bart,
is the rebellious older son; Lisa, the under appreciated middle child; and Maggie, the adorable baby.
The Simpsons don t live in luxury, but they are a generally happy family that encounters the
problems of everyday, and not so everyday, life, something that millions can relate to. But there is
something that sets The Simpsons apart from the

The War Room Analysis
D. A. Pennebaker s The War Room is a film about the figures behind the scenes of a political
campaign. Given a subject that historically lends itself to drama and narrative tension, Pennebaker
makes active choices in filming and editing to find the story within the story. The film becomes a

Pennebaker approaches the film as an appreciation of fellow craftsmen, giving credit to James

invisible lines of contact present in politics. In one instance, Pennebaker films both sides of a
telephone conversation between Carville and Stephanopoulos. While the clips may not even come
from the same conversation, the evidentiary editing immediately opens up the world of the movie.
The audience no longer cares solely about the room in front of them, but is also curious about the
important action in other conference rooms, happening just a phone call away. Pennebaker also
highlights the contrast between the public and private spheres of communication. In particular,
there s a political need to project a certain cohesiveness, regardless of internal discord. The War
Room depicts many meetings where the strategists are bogged down in minutiae, debating word
choice and the colors of rally signs. Pennebaker artfully contrasts these scenes with the final media
output. When the film cuts to the end of the rally, the audience sees the balloons fall in conjunction
with Fleetwood Mac, Bill s face on a giant monitor, and a crowd full of coordinated signs.
Presented by itself, the rally feels seamless and natural; the crowd has an organic and infectious
enthusiasm. The inclusion of the tedious conference room discussions shows the intentionality
behind the rally. The crowd shots, normally the public focus, begin to feel impersonal and fade into
the background. The audience cares more about how the rally will affect

Domestic Violence In Sports Essay
The issue I choose deals with professional athletes and the criminal justice system. Over the years
around the sport world there has been many cases of top professional athletes that have
committed or accused of crimes. Over half of results of those crimes sadly ended their career. My
favorite football player, former Dallas Cowboy star running back Ezekiel Elliott was accused of
domestic violencewhich almost stopped him from playing his rookie season. All over the league it
seems that professional athletes are more and more accused of domestic violence, but almost half

The Parable Of The Cave
The stories we read can teach us many things. We can learn lessons from such stories can make
us better people by teaching how others have learned from their successes and failures. Many
examples of such successes and failures which are discovered in Plato s story, The Parable of
the Cave, and Genesis chapter of the The Old Testament. Those involved in these stories learn
valuable lessons in these stories, both in a similar way, yet with different outcomes. Even with
these different outcome, everyone involved are taught in similar fashion, by learning one
concept after another, until they were able to comprehend fully. In Plato s, The Parable of the
Cave, Socrates is talking with a young follower named, Glaucon. Socrates wants to talk about
those who are enlightened or unenlightened, about looking past your own scope or view on your
life, to expand your mind. In order for Socrates to get his point across he needs to set examples
for Glaucon. Firstly, he starts his story of prisoners in chains, where they are unable to move
since childhood, followed by the effects that would occur if set free. Socrates uses questions in
order to engage Glaucon to teach him his principles of his theory. For example, And if they were
able to converse with one another, would they not suppose that they were naming what was actually
before them? (Literature of the Western World Pg. 1197) Also, when Socrates is talking about the

Friendship plays a vital part in growing up and becoming an adult. Friendships guide people and
also shape them into the people they are. In this late 90s comedy, a group of six friends try to
navigate their lives while living in New York City. The show Friends shows the highs and the

The Collective Bargaining Process Of The Uaw
This report represents the analysis of the collective bargaining process of the UAW (known as the
CAW today) and GM (General Motors), presented in the film The Final Offer , 1985. Canada and
the United States were part of the negotiations with General motors to reconcile a bargaining
settlement in 1984. There was a compromise among labor and management that resulted to strike
throughout months of the negotiation process. Craig as well as Hebdon and Brown have framed 3
hypotheses that will concentrate on the economic situation, the consequences of strike, in addition
to, the community interests during bargaining and negotiations. The factors mentioned have been
founded by categorizing the actors, diverse environments, outputs and the conversion mechanisms.
Prior to analyzing the 3 hypotheses we should define the main actors that were a part of the
negotiations. Management part included Rod Andrew (Canadian GM negotiator) and Roger B
Smith (United States GM negotiator). Labor part included Owen Bieber (UAW agent), Buzz
Hargrove and Bob Nickerson (UAWC deputies), as well as, Robert White (UAWC director). Also,
the votes that powerfully counted were the Canadian plant legislators, therefore, based on that we
count them as actors. During 4 nerve wrecking months, there were comprehensive negotiations and
discussions among the management and labor to achieve a sensible understanding agreement
between the parties. The strike made an impact on the agreement, which made a great

Humor In Joseph Heller s Catch-22
Similarly, Heller s use of humor to alter a reader s emotions drastically, distracts readers from his
original point. While reading Catch 22 one goes through a wide spectrum of emotions, and those
emotions can change in a matter of seconds. One example of this is when Nately s whore finds
out about Nately s death. Her angry reaction is understandable, but Heller stretches this out for
quite a while. The grieving woman is transformed through the dark humor that Heller uses so
liberally, her character is revised into a maniac, set on killing Yossarian. It is this type of nonsense
that is not needed in order for Heller to make his point. The reader understands Heller s point
about grieving after he spends seven consecutive pages describing Nately s... Show more content on

This is perhaps his most successful use of dark humor. The maid in the lime colored panties and
her relationship with Yossarian is an example of the point Heller is trying to make. As John
Muste noted, Love is reduced to lustful sexual encounters in which women are barely human
(Muste). Heller s statement about love is truly well, and his use of dark humor is quite good.
Talking about how Yossarian would sleep with anyone, and the light hearted attitude he used
when Aarfy raped the girl. His use of humor does an exceptional job of poking fun at the state of
love. Although he does a better job in this category, winning a battle is not the same as winning a
war. Heller is successful in making his point about love but fails elsewhere within the same topic
by over using dark humor. Heller s statement about love, is lost in the web of dark jokes that
Heller is constantly weaving. Instead of coming across as a powerful statement, Heller s erotic
chapters are accepted as just that. Although his purpose is understood, Catch 22 is not a
commentary on love, it is a commentary on war. In order to be more successful, Heller should
have focused on making his main point clear. This failure is to focus on the main idea and instead
look at love so deeply is perhaps why some people consider his use of erotic material to prop up his

Hydraulic Fracking In The Oil And Gas Industry
Introduction and Background In the oil and gas industry, fracking is a major current issue that
engineers are dealing with for the current state of the United states. Hydraulic fracking, or
fracking is the process of drilling a well to the depth in the earth where shale rock is located.
Once the drill bit reaches this specific depth, the drilling alters its path to a horizontal track into
the shale rock in order to span the entire reservoir. Next, fracking fluid, consisting of sand, liquid
chemicals, and water, is injected into the shale rock at a high pressure, which cause small cracks,
known as fissures, in the rock. This action allows oil and natural gasto freely escape into the
pipeline. The oil and gas mixture then flows to the surface... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Also the disposal of the fracking fluid should be regulated in a non harmful way to the
environment. Along with many other engineering activities, there are ignorant people that rally
against fracking due to the little information they know and their refusal to research the topic
before making accusations. Conclusion In conclusion, Fracking is an innovative way to extract
oil and gas from shale rock. It differs from conventional drilling from the fact that deeper wells
and horizontal drilling are utilized in order to produce more. There are many benefits that
accompany fracking, such as increased employment and decreased cost of importation for the
US because of their large reserves of shale rock. Fracking does come with some drawbacks, such
as environmental issues and fresh water reserves. With future regulations of fracking, the
negative environmental effects can be mitigated. Also, additional water purification systems
should be implemented at fracking sites in order for excess water to be reused and not disposed.
Currently, OPEC has lowered the price to $54 per barrel, which limits fracking because the
breakeven price per barrel is $64 ( A key investor s guide to the crude oil market ). When the price
per barrel exceeds $64, US will become an exporter rather than importing form outside countries.
This will ultimately increase the US

How Did The Goths Lead To The Fall Of The Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was one of the biggest and most influential empires in history. At its height it

was formed and remembered by its incredible military prowess, but that military strength failed the
empire and lead to the fall of the Empire. Military defeats led to the fall of the Western Roman

The Postal Acceptance Rule
Postal Acceptance Rule (Mailbox Rule): The Postal Acceptance Rule or Mailbox Rule is a
common law term for contracts that determines the formation of a contract in which the
involved parties are communicating through the mail. The primary thrust or core of the mailbox
rule is that the acceptance of an offer is sent before the revocation of the specific offer is
received. In a scenario where the communication is sent rejecting the offer while a later
communication is also sent in acceptance of the contract, then the first communication to be
received by the offeror will succeed ( Mailbox Rule , n.d.). Since this rule originated several
years or decades ago, many people say that it should no longer be applied today because the
reliability of the postal system is declining and the increased use of electronic means to send
letters. Understanding the Postal Acceptance Rule: As a doctrine in contract law, the postal
acceptance rule states that if mail is a rational means of delivery for an acceptance, the acceptance
becomes applicable on the date its postmarked and dropped in the mailbox ( What is the Mailbox
Rule? n.d.). Therefore, the rule is applicable for payments in insurance premiums where it s
considered as a way of accepting the contract with its postmarked date being the acceptance date.
Since its inception and establishment in the early 1800s, the postal acceptance rule is a common
characteristic of legal standards in various nations like Australia. Notably, the

The Pathology Of A Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Essay
Seth Kahn s (2011), article entitled, Putting Ethnographic Writing in Context, identifies
ethnography as the study of relationships, rituals, values, and habits that make people understand
themselves as members of a group. Ethnographers adopt a stance of observation, as well as
participation to better understand the discourse among members within a particular group, or
discourse community (Khan, 2011). This ethnographic research will connect what community
members know and do, with what they say and how they say it (Devitt, Bawarshi, Reiff, 2003).
The purpose of this study is to explore how nurses, working in a cardiac catheterization
laboratory, learn the local knowledge necessary to communicate with a multidisciplinary
discourse community successfully. To protect the identity of participants in this study, the name
of the laboratory included in the study will be identified as the XYZ Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory. Cardiovascular diseases have long been the leading cause of death in the United
States (Narang et al., 2016). Research predicts the progression of cardiovascular disease will
affect forty percent of our population by the year, 2030 (Narang et al., 2016). Furthermore,
research shows that the cardiovascular workforce is inadequate to meet the rising demands of this
patient population (Narang et al., 2016). In particular, a subset of cardiac nurses, a cardiac

The Importance Of Small Business
Business in a Changing World provides an excellent overall introduction into the world of business.
While studying this textbook, five areas stood out to me as being particularly important and
essential in creating and maintaining a small business. These areas include the following: small
business advantages, using digital media for marketingand advertising, identifying products, abusive
and intimidating behavior and the importance of good communication and organizational skills.
The section on advantages of small businessownerships lists several reasons why an individual
might pursue a small businessinstead of working for a corporation. For example, some individuals
prefer being their own boss and enjoy crafting their own schedule taking into consideration their
own unique family and lifestyle. Furthermore, the availability of affordable technology and
internet access makes it possible to do certain types of work at home or on a small scale that in
the past would have required the financial support and resources of a much larger business.
Additionally, the list of 10 Successful Traits of Young Entrepreneurs helped me better evaluate my
potential to start and maintain a small business. Digital media is an extremely important aspect of
today s current business climate. Throughout the textbook digital media is referenced as a tool for
small and large businesses due to the flexible nature of the internet and the way in which
recreational forms of media can also be used

Theme Of Redemption In The Hunger Games
In many works of literature and film there are many biblical illusions and parallels that have been
explored. The Hunger Games explores many themes from the Bible, the overall theme being
redemption. In the Bible there are stories that foreshadow the redemption of christ. While Katniss
story isn t the final redemption of Panem, she hopes that one day Panem will be restored. Other
themes in The Hunger Games also align with themes such as suffering, war, and love.
Redemption as the overall theme throughout both texts is shown through the act of self sacrifice,
which alludes to they way that Jesus brings redemption to humanity. This is supported in the Bible
as Ephesians 1:7 states 7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of
our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, this quote refers to the sacrifice that Christ
made for man kind. It reenforces that it is only through laying down your life for others that life
has any purpose at all. Like Jesus, Katniss comes from a very marginalised place in the world.
Katniss also has many other attributes that coincide with Christ. She is always serving her loved
ones, at the risk of sacrificing herself.
Another theme explored in both the Bible and The Hunger Games is suffering. ... Show more

The Hunger Games revolves around the idea that each district must fight (war) until all other
districts have been eliminated and then peaceful and safe living will be restored. Isaiah 25:8 8
He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces.
He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for Yahweh has spoken it.

Thomas Kuhn Research Paper
Thomas Kuhn s View of Science Peter Roberts Thomas Kuhn was one of the most influential
philosophers of science of the 20st century. Beginning his academic career in physics, he developed
an interest in the history of science, which eventually saw him turn to the philosophy of science.
His ideas were influenced strongly by the time he spent studying the works of historical scientists,
such as Aristotle and Copernicus, in their original contexts. Kuhn were published his seminal work,
The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1962. Kuhn describes the work of scientists in a
scientific field as being conducted under the banner of a paradigm , which he defined as
universally recognized scientific achievements that for a time provide model... Show more

Paradigms, said Kuhn, were accepted examples of actual scientific practice examples which
include law, theory, application, and instrumentation together ... models from which spring
particular coherent traditions of scientific research 5 . The construction of a paradigm involves
an unprecedented scientific achievement (often solving a notoriously difficult problem in a
п¬Ѓeld), opening the way for many problems that promise to be solved using the methods and
thought demonstrated by that accomplishment. To support this view, Kuhn gave several examples
of historically significant paradigms, including Newton s understanding of Mechanics as
published in his Principia and Lavoisier s work in 2 Chemistry. A paradigm allows scientific
research to proceed by defining suitable scientific problems (for example the strength of the
gravitational constant suggested by Newtons work), and giving the scientist the confidence that
the solutions to such puzzles exist within the framework of the paradigm. A paradigm further
promotes fruitful work by allowing the scientist to continue the work of others, rather than each
new scientist needing to rebuild his п¬Ѓeld from fundamentals 6 . It was this promise of continued
success in scientific problem solving that led Kuhn to identify the existence of a governing
paradigm to divide the scientific field from

My Resilience
I did not have a normal childhood. I experienced a death of a parent, the other being an alcoholic,
lived through abuse, and lived in foster care. It is no wonder I battle with a mental illness,
however, I do not let the disorder run my life. It has been over 6 years since my last hospitalization.
I strongly feel the factors that have contributed to my resilienceconsist of self determination, a
strong support system, proper coping mechanisms and therapy. Resilience according to the Center
on the Developing Child at Harvard University, is the ability to adapt to a situation that may alter
an individual s lifestyle in a positive way, without being consumed by the negative outcomes
(National Scientific Council on Developing Child, 2015).

The Enlightenment And Ideas Of The Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was a time of mathematical, scientific, and philosophical advancement. The
thoughts of philosophers like Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Locke inspired many, such as the
Americans. Their ideas about freedom of religion, civil liberties, free trade, and social reforms
became the basis that the Americans built their new country upon and impacted politics and
culture. Due to the advanced ideas that were emerging from Europe, religious views of the colonists
started to alter. Before enlightenment beliefs spread, the universally accepted theory was that
human suffering was inevitable. However, the new conjecture stated God set the universe in motion
and gave humans the power of reason to enable them to comprehend the orderly and complex

Women Hollering Creek Woman
The Mexican woman is a highly stereotyped individual. She is either timid and meek, rarely
speaking out of turn, and when she does it is in a small, soft accented voice that begs to be left
alone. Or, she is fiery, exotic dark caramel skin, long wind blown hair and lips red as blood. She
is a vixen, independent and loud, with a laugh that can be heard all around the room. But both of
these women come from the same place, as do the women who do not belong in either category. In
Women Hollering Creek and Other stories, Sandra Cisneros gives a voice to these women. By
showing Mexican and Mexican American culture through an intimate and diverse scope, Cisneros
highlights the oppression and degradation of women that is commonplace in this culture... Show

In the vignette entitled Women Hollering Creek , CleГіfilas is simply given away to her soon to be
husband by her father, a choice she takes basically no part in herself, despite it being a life altering
and intimate decision. This type of family dynamic is commonplace in Mexican culture, with the
power of the household being ultimately placed upon the head male figure. This is not just a
Mexican convention, however, as many women and girls especially experience gender oppression
within their own families in their relationships with men, often experiencing gender domination
(Shaw Lee, 445). This type of gender oppression can be seen in many different ways within a
family with masculine privilege presenting itself by dominating women in subtle or not subtle
ways, one such way being making and/or vetoing important family decisions , which giving away
your daughter to another man certainly is (Shaw Lee 446). After leaving behind her childhood
home and her father, CleГіfilas finds herself not only under new ownership , but also in a
completely different country. She does not speak English, and she has no friends here, or means
of leaving. Her power and familiarity has been completely stripped from her, forcing her to rely
on this new man entirely for safety. A fact which her husband almost immediately abuses, taking
to hurting her physically and secluding her from the world. He has become the new dominant
male in her life, able to make all the choices for her, regardless of her feelings or well being. In this
way, the marriage was a transaction of power which bound CleГіfilas into subservience (Shaw Lee

AMI Implementation Plan
William Azzoli from the AMI team provided a brief overview of the AMI initiative the company
is taking. The new AMI meters will be replacing all existing meters throughout Con Edison and
Orange Rockland. The benefit of AMI meters will provide better outage and network
management and will allow customers to better manage their energy usage. In order to
communicate with the meters, a wireless mesh network is to be established using access points
and relays from Silver Spring Network. Approximately 11,500 APs and relays will be installed
starting January 2017 with the rollout beginning in Staten Island. The APs will be installed 21ft
high and will be located in the primary and secondary zone of overhead poles. In order to meet
the adequate clearances to install the APs and relays B 187 and drawing 365506 needs to be
updated. AMI and EH S preformed calculations which demonstrated no employee distance or time
restrictions when working in proximity to the AP or relay. To further validate the mathematical
tests, AMI and EH S commissioned Daytona T. Brown an independent laboratory to validated the
RF strength calculations. Test results yielded that the RF emissions were well below the public
limits established by AICGH and the IEEE.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Respect For Authority In The Jungle Book
Respect for authority is a central theme in the Jungle Book and the guiding principle in this law
reinforces that elders are to be respected and obeyed. Akela was the ultimate authority in the
jungle and respect for him was of the utmost importance. In humans this has similar meaning,
though not as highly looked upon as in the jungle kingdom. Some humans honor those who are
wiser and older, but it is not law to do so and many do not respect elders. Jungle law is about
obedience and respect, it is clearly written in the law. Human law is complicated and complex
and within it are many more smaller laws that are less about the greater good and more about the
individual person. Baloo teaches Mowgli the laws and the language of the jungle and respect is
a large part of that. A child could apply this law by simply listening and obeying his/her parents.
Just as Mowgli was taught, children must be taught how to behave. Saying please or thank you
is an example of respect that can be learned early. Adults can apply this by taking care of an
elderly parent who is having medical issues and needs assistance. An adult child who ensured
their elderly parent has their needs met and are advocated for is an example of how this might be
applies. I agree with this principle and I think it is one that used to be practiced more. In some
countries, it is law that adult children take care of their parents, but that is not the case in the
United States. I have heard stories of elderly people

Public Art Performance Essay
On November 7th, I put on the public performance of Our Stage, Your Voice, with the help of
multiple students on campus. It was performed in the Rose Bell Garden and was from 2:30 PM
to 5:30 PM. In that time span, the performers and I collected over five hundred notecards that
were performed in front of the student population. The inspiration for this performance came
from the class I took with Dr. Hatton in the Fall semester of 2014. Her generosity allowed me to
put this performance last year for extra credit, and it went well but not without problems. This
year I was able to put this performance on again for COMM 198. This paper is to explain how this
performance came to pass to begin with, to evaluate how the performance went, and what I learned
by doing this performance.
This performance was inspired by another public art performance by Shana Lutker called Hear it
Here . In this performance, there were two performers that had headsets which connected to two
microphones. Then audience members would periodically go behind a curtain and say something
into the microphone. These statements would then be performed in front of the rest of the audience

Texas Municipal Government
The four principal forms of municipal government used in the United States and Texas strong
mayor council, weak mayor council, council manager, and commission have numerous variations.
The council manager form prevails in more than 80 percent of Texas home rule cities, and
variations of the mayor council system work in numerous general law cities.
Citizens often ask, How would you clarify the structure of municipal government in my town?
None of the four models precisely depicts our government. The answer lies in home rule
adaptability. For instance, Brownsville and Harlingen in the Rio Grande Valley have a mayor and
city commission structure. Various combinations of the forms discussed in the accompanying

is supposed to stay out of politics. Thus, council manager cities have a tendency to respond more
to tip top and white collar class concerns than to those of the regular workers and ethnic
minorities. The business first class and the white collar class have more organizations and leaders
who have entry to city government and know how to function the system Just a minority of
council manager cities have mayors who routinely give strong political and strategy leadership.
One of these exceptions is San Antonio, where mayors for the most part are strong leaders The
council manager form seems to function admirably in cities where most individuals are of the same
ethnic gathering and social class and share regular goals. Obviously, couple of focal cities fit this

Using Utilitarian Ethicals to Determine Right From Wrong...
Introduction
In 1975 the board of directors for a company that makes transistors were presented with an ethical
dilemma. They were the last transistor company that was selling to a pacemaker company as a
result of other companies backing out of the business due to the failure of some pacemakers
leading to deaths of some of those who used them. At the time, pacemaker technology was
extremely new and had yet to develop into the ground breaking product that it is today. The ethical
dilemma presented to the board was whether or not to continue to sell their transistor to the
company and risk the negative connotation and ultimately the loss of shareholders in the company,
associated with the deaths that occurred (Shanks, 1996). This ... Show more content on

The second issue to be analyzed counters that possible result. If the transistor company were to
continue in business then there lies the opportunity to save countless lives that could benefit
greatly due to the technology. Yes, the company is putting itself at risk, but for the result of saving
people who really need pacemakers. It is known that pacemakers have failed before, but it can be
assumed that the aforementioned pacemakers did not have this company s transistor in it or else
they most likely would ve already left the contract. That being said, there is the possibility that the
other transistors that were being used were just poorly made (Shanks, 1996). As a result of this, the
main Utilitarian issue being presented is does the company end the contract and not take the
unnecessary risk associated, or do they continue the contract and potentially save countless lives?
Bentham s Advice to the Company Jeremy Bentham defined Utilitarian ethics as we are to promote
pleasure and act to reduce pain. (Driver, 2009). Bentham defined these ethics by taking into account
an array of parameters that included intensity, certainty, proximity, fecundity, purity and the amount
of people affected by a given decision (Driver, 2009).
Analyzing these parameters, it is clear to say Bentham would give the advice of staying with the
contract. By staying with the contract, the

Current Schools Of Thought On Change Management
TASK 1 1.1 The analysis must include consideration of two current schools of thought on
change management and how they have contributed to organizational change Kurt Zadek Lewin
(September 9, 1890 February 12, 1947) was a German American analyst, known as one of the
advanced pioneers of social , authoritative, and connected brain research An early model of
progress created by Lewin portrayed change as a three stage process. The primary stage he
called unfreezing . It included overcoming dormancy and disassembling the current personality
set . It must be some piece of surviving. Barrier systems must be circumventing. In the second
stage the change happens. This is ordinarily a time of perplexity and move. We are mindful that
the old ways are constantly tested yet we don t have a reasonable picture with reference to what
we are supplanting them with yet. The third and last stage he called solidifying . The new attitude
is solidifying and one s solace level is coming back to past levels ology The idea of progress
administration is recognizable in many associations today however how they oversee change (and
how effective they are busy) changes tremendously relying upon the nature of the business, the
change and the individuals included. Associations that handle change well seem to flourish, whilst
those that don t may battle to survive. A key piece of this relies on upon how far individuals inside
the association comprehend and manage the change

Obscenity In Fun Home. Should It Be Acceptable To

Obscenity in Fun Home
Should it be acceptable to implement obscene literature in the education curriculum, even at the
cost of one s moral beliefs? Fun Home, written by Alison Bechdel, is a graphic memoir that
illustrates the relationship of the character Alison with her father, Bruce. Although they did not
share an intimate father daughter bond in Alison s childhood, Alison grows up to bear many of her
father s traits, such as being queer. Unfortunately, her memories with her father are short lived, as
her father commits suicide when she turned twenty. As a result, she attempts to unlock her closeted
father s life and understand his struggles. A recurring theme throughout Fun Home is sexuality and

The College of Charleston had assigned Fun Home to the incoming students. The House lawmakers
were not pleased with Fun Home s theme of homosexuality and the text s depiction of sexual
imagery. Some students, in retaliation had organized protests convincing the governor to stop the
House from cutting down the funds (McCammon, 2014). On the other hand, some students down in
North Carolina, one being Brain Grasso, agreed to the fact that the story contains obscenity. They
refused to read the book as its content goes against their religious and moral beliefs (Grasso, 2015).
Professors might contend on the issue of academic freedom. However, obscenity is prevalent in the
book Fun Home and is gratuitously portrayed through the graphic. This could violate the moral
principles of some students. By incorporating this book in the curriculum, the professors would not
be redeeming social importance (Rault 100). The dictionary definition of obscenity is the depiction
of sexual matters in a way that infringes on standards of decency and morality. However, the extent
to which it contravenes the standards of morality is entirely subjective. My interpretation derives
from a Supreme Court ruling that concluded in a 1966 case that in order to establish obscenity, the
content must be utterly without redeeming social importance (Rault 100). I agree with those
professors who argue academic freedom:

Differences Between The Faulin s Tale And The Canterbury...
If you and 29 of your friends went on a trip and all told stories, whose story would win? In the
case of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, this was the question at hand. The Canterbury
Tales explains the religious pilgrimage of many individuals to Canterbury, and the stories they
told along the way. With them traveled a Host, who served as the judge of the contest. He
determined who the winner would be based off of how clean the story was and if the story was
morally sound or not. The prize for winning the storytelling contest was a free dinner. Based on the
rules set by the Host, The Franklin would have won the contest. The first criteria that each story

Mardi Gras falls on a Tuesday (Fat Tuesday). For an entire month before the Catholic holiday of

this special time of the year begins in New Orleans. During carnival, the faint but rhythmic sound
of marching bands in the distance seems to be almost constant. Parades both big and small fill the
streets almost every day. Walk by any local bakery and you re almost guaranteed to catch a

Each parade during Mardi Gras is put on by a type of social club known as a krewe. The krewes

the beads they throw at the parade they will also throw stuffed animals, Frisbees, cups and all
sorts of random things that are personalized with the name or symbol of that specific krewe.
People will literally jump over you and trample you with no shame to get those.
We ve all heard of the festival being a scene with women flashing for beads and I totally expected
the streets (especially Bourbon Street) to be filled with half naked drunk people. What I found
instead, were elaborately dressed festival goers of all ages celebrating, laughing and expressing
themselves through music, art, and dance. While many costumes and signs were humorous and
outrageous, I never once felt anything other than love and positivity around

  • 2. The American Red Cross Disaster Services Team Introduction Throughout the semester, I have been able to volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Services Team. This has been one of the most beneficial volunteer opportunities that I have ever accomplished. As an American Red Cross of Georgia Major Gift Officer, this volunteer experience allowed me to gain knowledge in a department that serves as the backbone of the American Red Cross. As a nonprofit fundraiser, it is difficult to truly see the mission that your team raises money for every single day. Fundraisers at the American Red Cross are trained as sales people, and before this volunteer experience I had never even been on a Red Cross disaster response call. Throughout the duration of the semester, I was able to gain true insight into the core of the organization and mission. This opportunity allowed me to not only enhance my career at the American Red Cross, but gave me a 360 degree view of the entire organization and the fundamentals of the Red Cross mission. Red Cross Mission and History The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need primarily during times of disaster. The American Red Cross mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors (American Red Cross). The organization focuses on five key service areas: 1.People affected by disasters in America 2.Support for members of the military and their families 3.Blood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Red Tides Research Paper Although many Karenia species have been described as of yet, K. brevis blooms move based on winds and tides; pinpointing a red tide at specific moment is difficult. Algal blooms can occur at any time of year, but usually increase between September and February. K. brevis is the main producer of brevetoxin, which is a powerful toxin. It has killed millions of marine organisms, and mostly occurred in gulfs and coast. It happened in the Gulf of Mexico primarily, especially on the Western Gulf coastal area of Florida. Although uncommon, it occurred in other parts of the Gulf as well, such as the Texas coast and Indian River Lagoon on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The reasons for red tides are not completely clear, and bloom dynamics, include... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Preventive measures attempt to stop blooms from occurring, minimize their incidence or limit their extent. The most effective way to prevent adverse health effects to humans from the red tides is to prevent exposure to the toxins and organisms. Lowering the amount of nutrients that are discharged into local watersheds is a top priority for prevention advocates that engage in red tide debates. Reduced nutrient loads will improve water quality throughout watersheds, in addition to lowering the intensity of terrestrial fluxes when a red tide is in close proximity to the coastline. Reduced loads may or may not lead to a discernible change in red tide patterns, but they will certainly improve the health of local watersheds. An important issue that prevention advocates need to consider, however, is the modalities of reducing nutrient loads and the most appropriate venues for affecting change. The major sources of local water quality impairment includes domestic and industrial wastewater, urban and suburban stormwater, agricultural runoff and hydrological changes. Local water quality problems could be associated with domestic and industrial point sources but stricter regulatory controls and new wastewater treatment technologies have substantially reduced pollution from these sources. Non point sources now account for most of the water quality problems in the state with urban stormwater and agricultural runoff being the primary concerns. And unlike point source discharges, non point sources are difficult to measure, monitor and control. In the case of NSP, this means monitoring shellfish beds for organisms and toxins as well as closing shellfish beds to harvest when specified levels are detected. When aerosolized red tide reach specific levels, water and air monitoring can detect high levels in the air, and cause respiratory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Relationship Between The English And The Native Americans Shayne Chen Mrs. Allen OCO AP US History 27 August 2015 The War of the Change The relationship between the English and the Native Americans in 1600 to 1700 is one of the most fluctuating and the most profound relationships in American history. On the one side of the picture, the harmony between Wampanoag and Puritans even inspires them to celebrate first Thanksgiving ; while, by contrast, the conflicts between the Pequots and the English urge them to antagonize each other, and even wage a war. In addition, the mystery of why the European settlers, including English, become the dominant power in American world, instead of the indigenous people, or Indians, can be solved from the examination of the relationship. In a variety of ways, the relationship drastically alters how people think about and relate to the aborigines. Politically, the relationship changes to establish the supremacy of the English; the English intends to obtain the land and rules over it. Socially, the relationship changes to present the majority of the English settlers; the dominating population is mostly the English settlers. Economically, the relationship changes to obtain the benefit of the English settlers; they gain profit from the massive resource in America. Therefore, the relationship does, in fact, change to foreshadow the discordance of the two groups of people. Firstly, the relationship changes in the politics in many ways. To begin with, the European settlers, the English, crave so much land ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Tyranny Of The Masses By Emmerson In the quote above, Emmerson exhorts the American people to recognize that their vote is not so insignificant that it holds no impact in an election, but that it is the involvement of each citizen which ensures true democracy. He acknowledges that as an American citizen, one has both the power to neglect their votingprivilege, never knowing its true value, and the power to exercise it, making a small step toward a just future for your country by participating in the democratic process. Voting allows the participation of all types of a country s individuals to contribute to the development of their society. However, it is often times beneficial only to a population s majority. Thomas Jefferson once called this a tyranny of the masses, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Corporal Punishment Controversy In 2013, Adrian Peterson, a Minnesota Vikings running back, faced felony charges and indicted by a jury with reckless injury of a child (Goessling). This incident sparked controversy on the topic of where the line is drawn between discipline and abuse. Oxford dictionary defines corporal punishment as: physical punishment, such as caningor flogging. On one hand, many parents argue that spankingor other corporal punishments are not abusive because it teaches respect and consequences for bad behavior. However, on the other hand, others maintain that spanking and other corporal punishments are harmful because it does not teach respect but instead inspires fear in the child and does not effectively teach them what they did wrong or what they did to deserve such punishment. Seeing both sides of the argument, I argue that the line between abuse and discipline is crossed when the punishment causes damage to the child, whether physical or psychological. I would go on to argue that spanking and other corporal punishments are not ideal because it does not show the child what he or she did wrong, can escalate into harsher punishment and borderline abuse, and has been shown to not be effective and can actually cause more behavioral problems in children. Parenting is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Children don t come home from the hospital with an instruction manual and only so much information can be acquired from parenting books at the local bookstore. Discipline can especially be a hard subject for new parents, considering that there is no real right way to punish your children for bad behaviors. Spanking is a commonly used strategy to combat childhood wrongdoing. Spanking has been used as a disciplinary tool in reportedly 90% of American families (Wolraich et al.). Spanking and corporal punishmenthas a high prevalence in American society. Although spanking is seen as acceptable by the majority, this does not mean that spanking is good for the child. Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff, a developmental psychologist, asserts, There is little research evidence that physical punishment improves in the long term. In contrast, there is substantial research evidence that physical punishment puts children at risk for negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Stephen Crane s The Open Boat Essay Stephen Crane s The Open Boat Humanity often tends to see itself as being somehow important in the grand scheme of the Universe. We speak of fate as if we were put here for some reason, or purpose. We have our religions, which often serve as an engine to drive our lives and as a means to give meaning to them. But why do we think of ourselves in such a superior fashion? Do we really matter at all? Would the Universe stop if we were suddenly taken away? In his short story, The Open Boat, Stephen Crane shows us a Universe totally unconcerned with the affairs of humankind; it is an indifferent Universe in which Man has to struggle to survive. The characters in the story come face to face with this indifference and are nearly overcome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The men, however, seem removed from the clockwork of their surroundings; seperate, but somehow in the midst of everything happening around them. This indifference causes the men to feel a certain isolation from nature. They even go as far as to think of the Universe as being hostile: [The waves were] nervously anxious to do something effective in the way of swamping boats. (1) This is, however, just normal activity of nature, not any act of agression against Man. Although the men are pitted against an uncaring sea, they still at this point seem to think their destinies are controlled by some outside force. Their collective thoughts are given: If I am going to be drowned if I am going to be drowned if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees?...If this old ninny woman, Fate, cannot do better than this, she should be deprived of the management of men s fortunes. (6) It soon dawns on them, though, that there is no fate, no purpose for their being where they are. It is the realization of this fact that brings the men to the brink of despair: When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, he at first wishes to throw bricks at the temple, and he hates deeply the fact that there are no bricks and no temples. • 8. Long Term Effects Of Imperialism In South Africa In the second half of the 19th century, most African countries faced the aggression of the European imperialism. All African countries were colonized except for Ethiopia and Liberia. South Africa was one of the main countries that faced imperialism. The Boers, also known as the Dutch descendents or Dutch farmers, were the first to colonize South Africain 1652. Later on, the British came and took Cape Colony from the Dutch in 1795. The British at first mainly wanted to colonize South Africa as it helps her to trade with India by its route. South Africa s temperate climate, natural resources, and massive minerals attracted Europeans to take it over. First of all, there was a huge advance in agriculture. Early, when the Dutch settled in South Africa, they taught South Africans new farming techniques that would increase their production. The Dutch, being specialized in farming, introduced new farming tools to South Africans. The discovery of gold helped the British use gold efficiently as they made different kinds of jewelry which increased the economy enormously. The British bought many African slaves to work in the mining industry but this helped them learn new techniques that would increase their production and resources. The British has actually improved the education in South Africa. Nowadays, we see British systems in South Africa that are still helping South Africans to become successful in their lives. The employment rate is increasing and increasing. On the other hand, there were also negative impacts. The main negative impact is racial discrimination. The starting of feuds between blacks and whites in the colonization of South Africa are still happening today in South Africa. Economic exploitation is also a negative impact. • 10. The Oversexualization Of Women In Japanese Anime And Manga WMST/PHIL 346 The Oversexualizing of Women in Japanese Anime and Manga The Japanese are a very creative culture which have produced several fantastic science fiction movies such as Gojira, which was an allegory for the use of atomic bombs in war to the animated cartoons, known as anime in America, like Space Battleship Yamato which portrayed the story of all the nations of the planet Earth joining forces to defeat an alien invasion. Yamato and other animelike Mach A Go Go had female characters in the shows that were both allies and sometimes love interest to the main characters, but still were depicted as strong female role models and were drawn with normal features and body types. However, as time has passed, women in anime have been more and more sexualized and this has had an effect on how young people look at Japanese culture and women in particular. In this paper, the effects of this practice will be observed. With the anime boom of the last few years, the way women have been portrayed in these animated cartoons has been more and more sexualized. Shows such as Fairy Tale depict the female leads as scantily clad fighters with rather large breast. Even the youngest girl on the show that is around the age of 11 to 12 is depicted with larger than normal breast. One of the main reasons for this is the rather strong patriarchal view of women in Japan that is still there to this day. He demonstrates if a given task is to calculate a mathematical problem and information is presented as numbers with operational signs sequenced appropriately, children who understand algorithms can proceed with ease. However, when the mathematical task to answer includes information that is presented at the outset in words and sentences, pupils must first comprehend the text before they can use the appropriate algorithmic skill. Obviously then even the best maths students cannot solve problems they don t fully understand. Fuentes (1998) maintains the narrative of mathematical problems tends to be compacted where mathematical concepts and relationships are often hidden, implied or assumed and the pupil is left to expand and extract the true meaning. This is in marked contrast to the narrative of storybooks which tends to be expansive and elaborate. In addition he notes that the ambiguity found in the interpretation of for example, a poem may well be applauded however any ambiguity in maths text interpretation simply means failure. Rueter (1995) provides a detailed look into the world of politics during the civil rights era. Rueter asserts that prior to the civil rights era, the Republican Party was not as effective in gaining rights for minorities compared to proposals made by the Democratic Party in the 1960s. He states that it was clear to minorities that the Democratic Party was more supportive of civil rights versus Republicans due to their lack of voting support of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Because of this, Republicans were seen as being against minorities due to their lack of cooperation with the Democratic Party to end segregation and with President Johnson to allow equal voting rights (240 1). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 barred unequal application of voter registration requirements, outlawed discrimination in public accommodations engaged in interstate commerce, encouraged the desegregation of public schools and authorized the U. S. Attorney General to file suits to force desegregation, authorized the withdrawal of federal funds from programs which practiced discrimination, and outlawed discrimination in employment in any business (Loevy 1997, 211 3). • 17. A Brief Note On The South Territory Of Australia In the Northern Territory of Australia, almost one third of the population is Aboriginal. They also own almost half the land in the territory, mostly as communities. Most of these communities are very remote, which doesn t leave very many options for economic growth and development because of limited infrastructure, environments not conducive to normal agriculture, and the education levels in regards to reading and math are low (Gorman). Because of this, many of the communities there are struggling financially, many of the people depending on welfare. Additionally, many of the public funds that are going to help the indigenous people in Australia are going to the larger communities, instead of the smaller, more remote ones (Koenig). Because of this, the people in these remote communities are having to find new ways to provide for themselves as the world changes around them. In the past, the Aboriginals were primarily foragers. They hunted and gathered the resources around them. As the country has changed, cutting down on the amount of land they have available, and the resources on it, they have had to find new ways to supplement this with other ways to survive and thrive, often selling different forms of art, or allowing outside companies access to their land to mine minerals for a fee. Several communities have also started small scale companies that are using local plants in different ways, such as food, food additives, and botanical medicines (Gorman). ... • 18. The Between Camp Four And The Summit Many factors contributed to the bottlenecks between Camp Four and the summit, including: The fact that no Sherpas left ahead of the climbers to fix ropes to aid in climbing above the Balcony, which left the climbers waiting while Beidleman, a guide, fixed the ropes; the Taiwanese team, who were climbing very slowly and all together, making it impossible to pass them, therefore creating delays for the climbers behind them; and the fact that once the ascent had begun, Hall s Sherpas were not eager to assist in fixing the ropes, presumably because they were angry that Fischer s Sherpas were not sharing the workload as had been originally planned. Krakauer was critical of Boukreev in this section of the climb because Boukreev was not using supplemental oxygen or a backpack, both of which Krakauer felt he should have had in the case of an emergency, as Boukreev was a guide, and charged with helping and protecting the clients, an ability which Krakauer thought was inhibited by this lack of oxygen and supplies, especially considering how much the high altitude and thin air affects the ability to think clearly. Just before reaching the summit, despite the fact that he was having difficulty breathing, Krakauer was actually quite calm but disoriented, and relatively excited about the prospect of reaching the summit. However, at the moment of his summit, he did not feel the elation that he expected, but rather apprehension and dread about what he knew to be a difficult descent. Chapter ... • 19. The Simpsons Television Show as a Pop Culture Icon Essay The definition of the typical American family has changed considerably over time. Ever since the age of television dawned on American culture, situation comedies have tried to portray the typical American family in an attempt to reach as many viewers as possible. In the 1950 s, there was Leave It to Beaver which represented a generic view of the American family during its time. There was a father whose responsibility was to financially support the family and be a role model for his children. There was a mother whose job was that of a typical housewife, taking care of the home and caring for the children. And there were the children who had no responsibilities, except to respect their parents and listen to their advice when... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The show was all but ignored by the older viewing public, who discounted it as a trashy cartoon. The consumption (Delingpole) of the program and its messages by the American public when the show first aired regularly was drastically different than what it is now and what the writers of the show intended. On face value alone, The Simpsons is not much more than a cartoon about a middle class family and their ridiculous escapades. But when examined more closely and with a more objective eye ? consumed as the show?s writers would intend ? one can see that The Simpsons is truly a comment on American society. The Simpsons basis, a father, a mother, and three kids, is far from unusual. The typical American is a blue collar worker not unlike the father, Homer, who works a mindless job at the local nuclear power plant in the Simpsons hometown of Springfield which is basically Anytown, USA. Marge, the mother, is a fairly typical housewife besides her large blue beehive hairdo. Bart, is the rebellious older son; Lisa, the under appreciated middle child; and Maggie, the adorable baby. • 22. The War Room Analysis D. A. Pennebaker s The War Room is a film about the figures behind the scenes of a political campaign. Given a subject that historically lends itself to drama and narrative tension, Pennebaker makes active choices in filming and editing to find the story within the story. The film becomes a sort of meta art: a media narrative about the people responsible for controlling media narratives. Pennebaker approaches the film as an appreciation of fellow craftsmen, giving credit to James Carvilleand George Stephanopoulostactical brilliance. Through the use of carefully thought out editing, intentional camerawork, and intimate access, The War Roomlays bare the hidden layers of communication present within the campaign. The War Room is about communication, and the editing choices help to weave together the often invisible lines of contact present in politics. In one instance, Pennebaker films both sides of a telephone conversation between Carville and Stephanopoulos. While the clips may not even come from the same conversation, the evidentiary editing immediately opens up the world of the movie. The audience no longer cares solely about the room in front of them, but is also curious about the important action in other conference rooms, happening just a phone call away. Pennebaker also highlights the contrast between the public and private spheres of communication. In particular, there s a political need to project a certain cohesiveness, regardless of internal discord. The War Room depicts many meetings where the strategists are bogged down in minutiae, debating word choice and the colors of rally signs. Pennebaker artfully contrasts these scenes with the final media output. When the film cuts to the end of the rally, the audience sees the balloons fall in conjunction with Fleetwood Mac, Bill s face on a giant monitor, and a crowd full of coordinated signs. Presented by itself, the rally feels seamless and natural; the crowd has an organic and infectious enthusiasm. The inclusion of the tedious conference room discussions shows the intentionality behind the rally. The crowd shots, normally the public focus, begin to feel impersonal and fade into the background. The audience cares more about how the rally will affect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Collective Bargaining Process Of The Uaw This report represents the analysis of the collective bargaining process of the UAW (known as the CAW today) and GM (General Motors), presented in the film The Final Offer , 1985. Canada and the United States were part of the negotiations with General motors to reconcile a bargaining settlement in 1984. There was a compromise among labor and management that resulted to strike throughout months of the negotiation process. Craig as well as Hebdon and Brown have framed 3 hypotheses that will concentrate on the economic situation, the consequences of strike, in addition to, the community interests during bargaining and negotiations. The factors mentioned have been founded by categorizing the actors, diverse environments, outputs and the conversion mechanisms. Hydraulic Fracking In The Oil And Gas Industry Introduction and Background In the oil and gas industry, fracking is a major current issue that engineers are dealing with for the current state of the United states. Hydraulic fracking, or fracking is the process of drilling a well to the depth in the earth where shale rock is located. Once the drill bit reaches this specific depth, the drilling alters its path to a horizontal track into the shale rock in order to span the entire reservoir. Next, fracking fluid, consisting of sand, liquid chemicals, and water, is injected into the shale rock at a high pressure, which cause small cracks, known as fissures, in the rock. This action allows oil and natural gasto freely escape into the pipeline. The oil and gas mixture then flows to the surface... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also the disposal of the fracking fluid should be regulated in a non harmful way to the environment. Along with many other engineering activities, there are ignorant people that rally against fracking due to the little information they know and their refusal to research the topic before making accusations. Conclusion In conclusion, Fracking is an innovative way to extract oil and gas from shale rock. It differs from conventional drilling from the fact that deeper wells and horizontal drilling are utilized in order to produce more. There are many benefits that accompany fracking, such as increased employment and decreased cost of importation for the US because of their large reserves of shale rock. Fracking does come with some drawbacks, such as environmental issues and fresh water reserves. With future regulations of fracking, the negative environmental effects can be mitigated. Also, additional water purification systems should be implemented at fracking sites in order for excess water to be reused and not disposed. Currently, OPEC has lowered the price to $54 per barrel, which limits fracking because the breakeven price per barrel is $64 ( A key investor s guide to the crude oil market ). • 39. The Postal Acceptance Rule Postal Acceptance Rule (Mailbox Rule): The Postal Acceptance Rule or Mailbox Rule is a common law term for contracts that determines the formation of a contract in which the involved parties are communicating through the mail. The primary thrust or core of the mailbox rule is that the acceptance of an offer is sent before the revocation of the specific offer is received. In a scenario where the communication is sent rejecting the offer while a later communication is also sent in acceptance of the contract, then the first communication to be received by the offeror will succeed ( Mailbox Rule , n.d.). Since this rule originated several years or decades ago, many people say that it should no longer be applied today because the reliability of the postal system is declining and the increased use of electronic means to send letters. Understanding the Postal Acceptance Rule: As a doctrine in contract law, the postal acceptance rule states that if mail is a rational means of delivery for an acceptance, the acceptance becomes applicable on the date its postmarked and dropped in the mailbox ( What is the Mailbox Rule? n.d.). Therefore, the rule is applicable for payments in insurance premiums where it s considered as a way of accepting the contract with its postmarked date being the acceptance date. Since its inception and establishment in the early 1800s, the postal acceptance rule is a common characteristic of legal standards in various nations like Australia. Notably, the ... • 40. The Pathology Of A Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Essay Seth Kahn s (2011), article entitled, Putting Ethnographic Writing in Context, identifies ethnography as the study of relationships, rituals, values, and habits that make people understand themselves as members of a group. Ethnographers adopt a stance of observation, as well as participation to better understand the discourse among members within a particular group, or discourse community (Khan, 2011). This ethnographic research will connect what community members know and do, with what they say and how they say it (Devitt, Bawarshi, Reiff, 2003). The purpose of this study is to explore how nurses, working in a cardiac catheterization laboratory, learn the local knowledge necessary to communicate with a multidisciplinary discourse community successfully. To protect the identity of participants in this study, the name of the laboratory included in the study will be identified as the XYZ Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. The Hunger Games explores many themes from the Bible, the overall theme being redemption. In the Bible there are stories that foreshadow the redemption of christ. While Katniss story isn t the final redemption of Panem, she hopes that one day Panem will be restored. Other themes in The Hunger Games also align with themes such as suffering, war, and love. Redemption as the overall theme throughout both texts is shown through the act of self sacrifice, which alludes to they way that Jesus brings redemption to humanity. This is supported in the Bible as Ephesians 1:7 states 7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, this quote refers to the sacrifice that Christ made for man kind. It reenforces that it is only through laying down your life for others that life has any purpose at all. Like Jesus, Katniss comes from a very marginalised place in the world. To support this view, Kuhn gave several examples of historically signiп¬Ѓcant paradigms, including Newton s understanding of Mechanics as published in his Principia and Lavoisier s work in 2 Chemistry. A paradigm allows scientiп¬Ѓc research to proceed by deп¬Ѓning suitable scientiп¬Ѓc problems (for example the strength of the gravitational constant suggested by Newtons work), and giving the scientist the conп¬Ѓdence that the solutions to such puzzles exist within the framework of the paradigm. This type of family dynamic is commonplace in Mexican culture, with the power of the household being ultimately placed upon the head male figure. This is not just a Mexican convention, however, as many women and girls especially experience gender oppression within their own families in their relationships with men, often experiencing gender domination (Shaw Lee, 445). This type of gender oppression can be seen in many different ways within a family with masculine privilege presenting itself by dominating women in subtle or not subtle ways, one such way being making and/or vetoing important family decisions , which giving away your daughter to another man certainly is (Shaw Lee 446). Respect For Authority In The Jungle Book Respect for authority is a central theme in the Jungle Book and the guiding principle in this law reinforces that elders are to be respected and obeyed. Akela was the ultimate authority in the jungle and respect for him was of the utmost importance. In humans this has similar meaning, though not as highly looked upon as in the jungle kingdom. Some humans honor those who are wiser and older, but it is not law to do so and many do not respect elders. Jungle law is about obedience and respect, it is clearly written in the law. The primary stage he called unfreezing . It included overcoming dormancy and disassembling the current personality set . It must be some piece of surviving. Barrier systems must be circumventing. In the second stage the change happens. This is ordinarily a time of perplexity and move.
