Martin Scorsese s Film, Taxi Driver Essay
Synopsis
Vietnam veteran Travis Bicklea finds that his life has been turned upside down after returning
America from the battle field. He suffers from the insomnia and sense of isolation, which leads
him to take a job as taxi driver at night; many of his customers represent the people from the lowest
class of society: prostitutes, adulterous husbands and wenchers. Since Travis has promised the cab
company that he will drive anywhere, at anytime, his likelihood of seeing the best of human
nature is fairly slim. So, he tries to create an extra occupational life for himself. He befriends
Betsy, a beautiful girl working at a Senator s campaign office. Unluckily, with on possession of the
slightest amount of social skills, Travis takes her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Especially in a scene where Bickle saves a manВЎВЇs life from a robbery where he gets away with
murder as the clerk would beat up the dead manВЎВЇs body. Though it might have seem gruesome
at the time, Scorsese doesnВЎВЇt pull back where he doesnВЎВЇt give any clear answer of Bickle,
in the terms of becoming normal. This is by far some top notch directing from one of NYCВЎВЇs
greatest visionaries.
In Taxi Driver, Scorsese manages his camera angles and editing to emphasize Travis seeing the
world through glass or mirrors, especially the windshield and rear view mirror of the taxi,
through which all major characters enter Taxi Driver: Betsy through the panes of an all glass
office; Palantine through his rear view mirror; and Iris and Sport in a fleeting glance in his
mirror. As Travis meets with a black market gun dealer, and in this scene the weapon literally
becomes the organ of perception. Scorsese situates his camera on Travis arm as that arm takes
the weapon and slowly pans it across the window looking down on the street below. Finally, in
the scene which has made Travis Bickle a cinematic icon ( Are you talking to me? ), Travis looks
into his mirror, challenges imaginary adversaries, and draws his various weapons in assault. The
ambiguity of the image is poignant: Travis looks into a mirror and makes a self destructive gesture
foreshadowing his attempted suicide at the climax of the film, and Travis peers through the looking
glass and

The Mono Tale Of The Hero s Journey
A Story within a Story In our current society, literacy is defined as the ability to read and write.
Though this is a common trait among individuals in our society, it is one that I view unique to
every individual who had the opportunity to obtain it. I will retell my literacy journey in a way
that encompasses one of my favorite theories in writing, the mono tale of the Hero s Journey by
Joseph Campbell. This theory states that the Hero s journey is a pattern in a narrative that
forms the basic template of all great stories (Gunn 1). Call to adventure My childhood has
revolved in the same area. Born on the 7th of the 7th month of the year 1997 at 7:37pm at a
hospital seven minutes away from where my parents resided I never considered myself special
in any way. The first years of my life were a blur of memories reinforced with photographic
evidence whilst containing vivid recollections of key events. Like most, I cannot recall the first
words I said, nor how I came to understand the languages spoken back home all I know is that
words came. Threshold/ the beginning of transformations One, Achiel, Mmoja, Two, Ariyo, Mbili,

Social Class And Underachievement In Sociology
Pursuing this discussion further, it could be implied that there is a connection drawn between
education and social class. Usually when conferring about these two aspects, social class and
underachievement becomes the focus of attention. Working class children experience a much
greater cultural clash when they enter schoolthan those from more privellaged homes (Giddens
and Griffiths, 2006, p.710). Gillborn and Youdell (2000) took this further suggesting how
teachers believed that ability was fixed (Darmody, Tyrrell and Song, 2011) and saw working
class pupils as having less ability and as lower achievers. Dunne and Gazeley (2008) also believe
that underachievers came from working class backgrounds and were labelled as underachievers
which resulted in many internalizing it and living up to the self fulfilling prophecy. Both
sociologists defined working class underachievement in a manner which was beyond outside their
control by locating their reasoning on aspects such as a low quality of life at home for such
individuals (Lawson, Heaton and Brown, 2010). And reflected in the minutiae of teachers
perception and interactions with students (Youdell, 2006, p.15) this is when teachers expectations
of working class students as lazy trouble some and middle class pupils as bright (Hargreaves, 1967)
is translated into actual outcomes affecting the educational achievement of different social classes.

Playing with the Blue Band Marching Band s Penn State Trip Oley Pride rings fiercely as twelve

On the ****** of September, the Oley Valley High School band had the privilege to be included in

Al Qaeda Of The United States
September 11th 2001 is a day Americans will remember for the rest of their lives. This was the
day Al Qaeda, a radical Islamic group organized by Osama Bin Laden in the 1990 s, terrorized
America. Al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and executed suicide attacks on four sites in the United
States of America. The first two of the airplanes were flown into the Twin Towers in New York
City, another hit the Pentagon in Washington DC and the last plane crashed into a field in
Pennsylvania, but could have been headed towards the White House or United States capital
building. Thousands of people died and these terrorists attacks changed America s fabric forever.

On Febuary 26th 1993, 7 members of Al Qaeda planted a bomb in a truck in a parking garage

. Although the bomb did not do extensive
damage to the World Trade Center as compared to the 9/11 attacks ...six people were killed
almost instantly. (The 1993 Trade Center Bombing) and thousands were injured in some way.
Another major terrorist attack executed by Al Qaeda was the USS Cole Bombing. In October
of 2000, while in Aden, Yemen the USS Cole made a rest stop to refuel. Meanwhile two suicide
bombers carried explosives on a small motor boat next to the USS Cole, The blast ripped a 40
foot wide hole near the waterline of the Cole, killing 17 American sailors and injuring many more.
(The USS Cole Bombing)
It did not stop there, before 9/11, These are just a few of the planned attacks on America by Al
Qaeda prior to 9/11, but none of them were as radical as 9/11. Three main issues that changed
significantly before and after 9/11 was homeland security, war, and battling terrorism. Homeland
Security is a major byproduct that evolved after 9/11. America s Homeland Security s goal is to
guarantee that America is safe, guarded, and buoyant against terrorist attacks and other harmful
acts. Their core goals include: 1.Prevent terrorism and enhancing security; 2. Secure and manage
our borders; 3. Enforce and administer our immigration laws; 4. Safeguard and secure cyberspace;

Margaret Steffler s A Complicated Kindness
Margaret Steffler s article, Fragments and Absences, states, Language in A Complicated Kindness,
constructed, responded to, and commented on by Nomi as first person narrator, demonstrates a
linguistic fragmentation comparable to the material fragments surrounding the deserted daughter
and sister (5). To understand this comment further, we have to analyze A Complicated Kindness. In
Miriam Toews novel, we focus on the protagonists Naomi Nomi Nickel; she is a curious and
defiant sixteen year old who is developing in a kind of stunted world, or as she states a non
progressive community (11). Nomi is trying to find herself, and this brings her into conflict with the
community, and its authorities, especially her uncle Hans The Mouth Rosenfeldt... Show more

Her narration is filled with constant deviations, jumping around, and incomplete endings; her
inability to maintain focus, it seems, is stated at the very beginning of the novel, Nomi has a
problem with endings (1). So, instead of an ending, she simply states a memory, or begins
another story; we can see this in the spaces between some paragraphs, the lines that indicate a
beginning of a new fragment, or simply a new chapter. Another example of her inability to
conclude is the novels ending, it seems like she is writing to her teacher her final assignment. In
the assignment she ends it by saying she will do things like leave and start a new life, but in
actuality she hasn t done anything she is still sitting in the empty house, so the reader is left
wondering, did Nomi really get out of the Mennonite community? The ending in itself is not

Critical Essay on, The Fall of the House of Usher.
He approached the house wearily, noting with growing horror its advanced, albeit subtle, state of
decay; however the labyrinth of phantasm that composed its interior belied the crumbling edifice...
Poe s gothic tale has inspired generations of readers with his unique style of rich detail and sheer
horror. In, The Fall of the House of Usherone finds the house mysteriously connected with its
inhabitants. As they slowly fall into a state of decay, both mental and physical, so also does its
structure weaken, eventually collapsing into the tarn in which it was standing, as its tenants fall
prey to the strain of body and mind. Without them, the house cannot stand.

He spends his days painting the most bizarre pictures, like that of a deep tunnel lit from within
by invisible sources of colored light; playing pieces he composes extemporaneously on his
guitar, then reciting to these melodies incoherent lyrics revealing a mind in torment. As his
sister s condition worsens and finally is ended by her death, he becomes almost maniacal in his
pursuit of the fantastic. Both the narrator and Roderick are horrified by her appearance of life,
even triumphing over her disease, and wonder as they lock her in an old keep for a fortnight.
Poe does not fail to inspire within the reader a sense of awe in her death, nor does he spare the
lurid details of the terror lurking within this burial scene of the lady Madeline. And so it is the
beginning of the end.
Soon Roderick takes to pacing all about the dark house, his mental condition deteriorating no less
rapidly than his physical; and even that has nearly reached its last stages of deterioration. The
pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue but the luminousness of his
eye had utterly gone out. Gazing upon vacancies for hours, speaking in tremulous quavering tones
it appears to the narrator as if he is concealing something which weighs so heavily on his mind that
he is slowly going mad. Then one stormy, sleepless night, the narrator relates how the seemingly

The stories of Anton Chekhov mark a focal moment in European fiction. This is the point where
19th realist caucus of the short stories started their transformation into modern form. As such, his
work straddles two traditions. The first is that of the anti romantic realism which has a sharp
observation of external social detail. It has human behavior conveyed within tight plot. The second
is the modern psychological realism in which the action in typically internal and expressed in
associative narrative that is built on epiphanic moments. In consideration of the two sides, Chekhov
developed powerful personal styles that presage modernism without losing traditional frills of the
form. This essay will discuss the Chekhov s portrayal of women.
Chekhov in The Name Day Party focuses on Olga and her relationship with her husband, Chekhov
appreciation for women is portrayed (Finke, 2005). Chekhov s work maintains a continuity of
appreciation for the endurance and humaneness of women in the face of afflicted and patriarchal
prejudice that fits in this feminist oriented era. Chekhov, though not liberal or conservative
politically have rejected all theories that generalize about life. Chekhov instead has put his faith in
the people. On another case, the central female characters in The Lady with the Dog have been
portrayed in comparable manner. Dmitri s wife and Anna are portrayed in same light. They are

Food Deserts- The link between income and access Essay
Food Insecurity and food accessibility are major problems not only in rural areas but also low
income urban areas throughout the United States. The term food desert or an area with limited
or no access to healthy, affordable and nutritious food was coined during a U.K. Study into food
accessibility for those in the lowest income neighborhoods which contained no major grocery
store and had the lowest rate of car ownership. This problem has come across the pond and we ve
seen many major grocery retailers flee from cities and move to the more profitable suburbs, what s
worse is as grocery stores consolidate they leave many neighborhoods under served by convenience
stores or fast food outlets. The prevalence of more processed, unhealthy... Show more content on

One significant effect of lack of supermarket access is its negative impact on diet. If a significant
portion of the people on public assistance cannot afford to eat healthfully and furthermore do not
have the ability or the nutritional education necessary to live a healthy lifestyle this has immediate
effects on the growing epidemics of obesity, heart disease and other lifestyle related illnesses and
on the health system that is already at capacity.
Three key elements are described in Sparks piece: proximity, variety and competition. Proximity
is important because research shows low income people are less likely to own an automobile.
Variety is important because research into retail choice suggests people value variety and do not
always shop at the supermarket that is closest to home (Handy,1996). Finally, competition is an
accepted price control mechanism, which is important when evaluating access for low income
populations. (Sparks). These are described as the most important factors because they will play
biggest role in where a person chooses to shop for food given the choice.
Not all the experts agree however that the prevalence of fast food and the limited access of fresh
food is the driving factor in the rise of obesity. A study conducted by the RAND corporation a non
profit federally funded research center recently released a study that found that among adults the
neighborhood food environment had little or no relation to the adult subjects

Interpersonal Communications During The Movie Steel Magnolias
Interpersonal Communication is a very important ingredient in making strong, healthy
relationships. Communicating is how we get a better understanding of one another s perception of
things, as well as how we help someone to better understand ours. We need to express our feelings
in relationships and know that they are reciprocated. Not communicating leads to problems and
misunderstandings. People need to learn to understand what the other person is trying to
communicate. Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information,
feelings, and meaning through verbal and non verbal messages: it is face to face communication. It

William Blake And The French Revolution
Since the beginning of modern times, the world has seen an arrival of conservative values in
political theorists. Thomas J. J. Altizer believes radical theology is more silent than ever before
and that, although William Blake was universally considered to be a madman in his time, his
work as a poet and painter is widely recognised as a revolutionary visionary (Altizer, Pg. 33). It is
clear that, had the French Revolution not happened, Blake probably would have been a mere poet
and water colourist, with a turn to eccentricity. The French Revolution influenced many people all
over the globe, including the radicals in London, to push and demand for immediate change.
William Blake, a radical himself, was unable to stand by when the violation of rights and abuse
of power was rampant and as a result he produced his revolutionary collection of poems Songs of
Innocence and Songs of experience . Blake realised that some of his radical beliefs, that were
evident in his work, were certainly going to be unpopular but he was determined to evoke
immediate change by using his poetry as a weapon to force people to look at the world from many
perspectives.
The world in which Blake lived in was, for example; a world that thought to be proud in one s
achievements was sinful, or to give freely to the poor was frowned upon, as to do so might lead
them to become discontent with their lot. It is apparent that Blake was risking everything, ready to
appear before the world, preaching his

). All characters who find the strength to break down with traditions and norms of the society

Similarly, Louis who has been tormented by the Jewish sense of guilt, by the end of the play

In his paper The Fate of the Other in Tony Kushner s Angels in America , Omer Sherman argues,
referring to the opening eulogy by the rabbi: Opposing the self effacement of Jews as they
transform themselves from strangers into bland citizens, the rabbi indicates prophetically that
the genuine home of Jews is always in an exiled place (18). In essence, this statement can be
applied to individuals entrapped within society at large, remorsefully witnessing their own true
identities smothered under the crushing weight of norms and stigmas (Reynolds, 2010). The
ones who suffer the most are those in the minority; therefore, it is incumbent on the self to do
whatever it takes to be perceived as a member of the majority (Reynolds 2010). One such example

Belonging is more than a state, it is a dynamic process which is affected by the individual s
personal circumstances and the relationship he/she has with others around him/her and the larger
social circumstances which determine the course of action taken by the individual . Due to the
complex and philosophical nature of the concept of belonging, a universal sense of belonging
can be found in unique circumstances for different people. As every individual has their own
specific desires, values and needs, they can find their place in this world and gain a true sense of

Use Of Flashbacks Analysis
Throughout this journal, I will be evaluating this section of the book. To begin, the first concept
I will be evaluating will be why the author uses quite a bit of flashbacks and what the flashbacks
are about. First, the author uses flashbacks for us to get a sense what happened before the crash
and what her personal feelings are. The author uses flashbacks for us because the readers do not
know what happened before the accident and for us to get a sense on why she wants to or maybe
does not want to live. With the help of these we understand why she is feeling and the reason she
has these feelings. Flashbacks also help us feel apart of the story and intrigue us to want to read
more. Secondly, another reason on why the author uses flashbacks... Show more content on

She shows us on how she wants to fight and how she does not want to fight to wake up from her

alive. An example from the book would be .... adjusts my IV and my monitors with the other.
Then she smooths a lock of hair from my forehead. You hang in there, she tells me (Foreman 22).
As one can see from this quote this shows that Mia can hear what everyone is saying and that she
has a chance to live if she believes in herself to live. Mia still has a chance to fight and she if she
will survive to wake up. Lastly, the final reason that the author uses flashbacks is because she is
an extremely talented musician. Forman uses this a aspect to strive for her to wake up and live.
Mia lived in a household where rock and punk music were normal to listen to. (Forman) Mia was
quite unique and different out of her family because she took a liking to classical music and was
extremely skilled at playing the cello. Mia has succeeded the standards for her age in the cello and
she has auditioned for Juilliard in hoping that she will be one of the best. The author use the

Re Expansion Of Ebay Into China
The re expansion of eBay into China seems to be a viable probability and a part of the companies

procedures, but would I miss a step? I knew my terminology, but would I mix them up? Would I
just be in everyone s way? I studied nonstop, aced my test, and ran through every skills lab I
could. Yet, I did not feel prepared. I was going to play a part in what happens to the patient. But I
was ecstatic to test my ability.
My nerves were quickly forgotten as I walked to the emergency entrance with large red letters
spelling EMERGENCY. I expected a large entrance considering that they are working to create a
level one trauma center. As I walked through the single sliding glass door, I recognized two of the
four workers at the front desk running the prehospital stroke test. One lady, ... Show more content

Robert Louis Stevenson once said, Don t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds
you plant. Although education is one of the most challenging professions in the world, it is also
one of the most rewarding because of the great responsibility entrusted to us. We have the
opportunity mould the lives of our future leaders, plant seeds of hope in the hopeless, and inspire a
generation of innovators.
When I think of planting seeds, I am often reminded of the story of the boy on a beach. An old
man watched the boy from a distance, as he bent down and picked up starfish stranded on the
beach. One by one, he tossed each starfish back into the open arms of the sea. The old man, jaded
by the world, approached the boy and asked why he would even bother. It didn t matter! It was

The Modern View Of Islam
The modern view of Islam in the United States is often influenced by the stereotype created by
westerners based on the history of military conflict between the United States and Islamic countries.
In turn, the view of Americans has shifted in Islamic countries due to the religious generalization
that has been developed. It is widely known that the United Statesand Islamic countries have had
military conflict in the past, with examples such as the September 11th attacks or the location and
assassination of Osama Bin Laden, however the negative social interaction between these two
communities is seldom addressed within western society. It is the misconception of the Muslim
religion and Islamic culture that is to blame for these social biases which have placed Muslims in
America into a social subjugation predominantly by people of non Muslim religious affiliation in
western society. In parallel and due to this subjugation, a negative opinion of Americans in Islamic
countries has been adhered. To address this issue in a two hour briefing with the President of the
United States, the topic of religious generalization and the physical and social harm it has caused to
the Muslim community will be addressed. Likewise, it is to the concern of the President of the
United States that the American reputation has been harmed as it is his job to uphold the American
reputation within the international realm.

Research Paper On Florence In The Renaissance
Florence: Heart of the Renaissance By Yusra Farooq
During the 15th century, Florence was the home of the Renaissance and the birthplace of our
modern western world. You can enjoy much of the greatest art created, during that exciting age,
today like Michelangelo s David or Botticelli s Birth of Venus. There s also Ghiberti s glorious 3D
bronze gates, Fra Angelico s serene beauty of paintings and the Duomo that kicked off the
Renaissance. After the fall of ancient Rome, Europe wallowed in centuries of relative darkness.
There was little learning, commence, or travel. Then, in about 1400, in Florence, there was a
Renaissance. This exciting rebirth of the culture of ancient Greece and Rome swept from
Florence to all across Europe. Artists rediscovered the wonder of nature and the human body.
Their art expressed the optimism and confidence of the new age. The Western civilization made
up for lost centuries with huge gains in science, economics, and art. Florence was the center of it
all and for a good reason; it was where capitalism was replacing feudalism and being the
middleman of trade between west and east, the city had money and it knew what to do with it.
Wealthy merchants and banking families, like the Medici who ruled Florence for generations,
commissioned splendid art to show their civic pride. And Florence unleashed an explosion of
innovation by recognizing and paying creative genius like no one else.
The Renaissance was an age of humanism. A time of confidence,

Neuromuscular Junction Synapse
A synapse is the space located between the motor neuron and the skeletal muscle which is also
referred to as a neuromuscular junction. The motor neurons that originate from the spinal cord, help

synapses are present along with these processes and are also known as motor endplate. The
neuromuscular junction synapse has three characteristics. It consists of two membranes called the
pre and post synaptic membranes and the space between the two membranes is known as the
synaptic cleft. A high density of small spherical vesicles are present and they contain
neurotransmitter substances. A thickened post synaptic membranes is present and it contains a high

Jurassic Park is a story of how this man decides that it is a great idea to resurrect the dinosaurs.
The best scientists came together and took the tiniest form of remains possible to be able to be

under control and they were eliminating every single possibility for these creatures to cause
destruction anywhere. They said they were going to make a theme park, enjoyable for everyone;

The Hunger, By Kafka And Gabriel
In the short stories written by Kafka and Gabriel readers witness to characters strongly familiar to
suffering and accustomed to being misunderstood and being isolated, furthermore both authors
displays the cruelty of mankind, pleasure seekers who get a rush out of seeing characters suffer for
their own enjoyment. In Kafka s short storyhis character the hunger artist represents a man who s
misunderstood by society for his strong desire to fast, the artist believes he s trying to find
spiritual fullness through his fast but is actually seeking public recognition for his form of art
work. Moreover in Gabriel s story his character faces misunderstanding from the society he has
been forbidden to and unacceptance from their people. Both characters are isolated from society,
suffering in their own intimate ways and made mockeries of by their pleasure seekers, more over
both stories portray a narrow mindedness of others religion.
In the short story by Kafka the hunger artist demonstrates a character who is trying to find
spiritual nourishment by fasting, but he s unable to find it. This is primarily because he s looking
for a different type of nourishment, recognition from the public for his fasting and earning for his
wavering audience to understand the sanctity of it. However the hunger artist receives the opposite
from his people, they instead make a mockery of his art leaving the hunger artist outraged and
empty. And so he lived [...] in apparent glory, honored by the world,

Socrates and Thrasymachus discuss examples of such proficient individuals such as a doctor or
a pilot and their roles such as the doctor who is sought by those who require medical care or the
pilot who is commander of the sailors, Thrasymachus citing these examples as proof of his
claims. Socrates uses Thrasymachus examples to counter his argument by claiming it is the
exact opposite by stating how the doctor is the one who is dependent on the sick for his art, and
if there were no sick people, he would be useless and thus powerless. The pilot depends upon his
men to accept his authority and follow his commands, for if they so desired, they could easily
mutiny and overthrow him. This can be applied to the rulers of a nation, as they may also not
know if the laws they are implementing can be good or not, which also carries the risk of losing
the support of the masses. Socrates makes the case that without all these people to rule, the doctor,
pilot, and ruler would all find themselves without power for it comes from the ruled, after which
the discussion turns to these positions being self centered such as the doctor being a wage earner
and not concerned over their distribution of

Characteristics Of Post Impressionism
Post Impressionism encompasses a wide range of distinct artistic styles that all share the common
motivation of responding to the opticality of the Impressionist movement. The stylistic variations
assembled under the general banner of Post Impressionism range from the scientifically oriented
Neo Impressionism to the lush Symbolism, but all concentrated on the subjective vision of the
artist. Symbolic and highly personal meanings were particularly important to Post Impressionists
such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. Rejecting interest in depicting the observed world,
they instead looked to their memories and emotions in order to connect with the viewer on a deeper
level. Structure, order, and the optical effects of color dominated the aesthetic vision of Post
Impressionists like Paul CГ©zanne, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac. Rather than merely represent
their surroundings, they relied upon the interrelations of color and shape to describe the world
around them. Despite the various individualized styles, most Post Impressionists focused on
abstract form and pattern in the application of paint to the surface of the canvas. The label Post
Impressionismwas never used by the Post Impressionists themselves. It was coined in 1910 by
Roger Fry when he staged an exhibition in London called Manet and the Post Impressionists
(Munry, 2017). Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh were the central artists of this show since,
according to Fry, they were the three great painters who had turned

Champion Of The World By Maya Angelou Analysis
Both Maya Angelou of Champion of the World , and Amy Tan of Fish Cheeks write anecdotal short
stories which express their isolation from the dominant Anglo culture while delving into deeper
detail as to why they feel such a great sense of alienation. Although both stories take place within
different settings and time periods, a primary commonality they share comes from within the
detachment they feel as minorities within a larger, more dominant community. Each author expertly
employs literary devices such as description and narrativestylewithin their writing to express the
primary underlying message of their anecdotal stories; however, placing emphasis on the
descriptive aspects of a story and setting more often seems to give the audience greater clarity and
insight into the situation and setting. In Tan s story, objects of familiarity and a myriad of
overwhelming are described in intense detail. Therefore, Tan s heavy emphasis of description
throughout her story resonates more strongly with the reader. By thoroughly analyzing the text, we
can observe how and why the literary element which the authors place more focus on is an
important aspect toward expressing the theme of cultural isolation, as well as to how Tan s usage
of description give the audience more insight as a result.

Song Analysis Of Hotel California
Everyone makes mistakes at some point in their lives. As an adolescent many are told to learn
from you mistakes, but an abundant amount of adults do not tend to live by that. Many times,
people are blinded by wealth, reputation, and success. Rather than making the right decisions, they
disregard their previous choices of action instead of learning from them. Hotel California s
message is trying to revert its listeners back to their childhood ways. The iconic track hit the music
industry with its soulful lyrics and its innovative sound in 1976. The album as well as the song is
titled Hotel California . In Hotel California, The Eagles relay to the listener that if one takes the
risk, they must suffer the consequences by using metaphor, assonance, and imagery.
The Eagles use rhythmic patterns in their lyrics that further portrays the main characters feelings
before and after he has to compensate. When The Eagles sing, She got the mercedes bends/She got
a lot of pretty, pretty, boys that she calls friends, this connects the two sentences to help the listener
further understand how the main character noticed the odd quirks about the situations and actions of
his peers (line 30).The use of assonance provides a more indepth outlook about the leading woman
in the song. Her situation was strange in the sense that her surroundings were very unlikely to
achieve. She seems to be substantially wealthy considering she is stranded in the middle of the
desert without occupation.

The Epidemic Of Mass Incarceration Essay
Introduction The epidemic of mass incarceration affects many families within the United States.
The problems of mass incarceration have been echoed far and wide, but it was not until recent
years that the issue has been acknowledged, let alone fully addressed. Authors such as MK Asante
and Bryan Stevenson, and filmmakers such as Ava Duvernay, have all discussed mass incarceration
and its common threads such as the collapse of family structures, damage to mental, physical, and
communal health, amongst other lasting impacts. Despite the commonalities, each artist takes on a
different perspective on the issue and presents it in a different light. Essay A MK Asante, in his
book Buck: The Memoir, highlights the devastation of mass incarceration on the family structure
and on individuals, particularly young individuals, who are incarcerated. Asante utilizes an
informal tone and jargon the way in which the penal and justice systems dehumanizes those it is
meant to reform. Asante s informal approach and use of jargon turns the issue of mass
incarceration into a conversation that engages readers. His feelings about the penal system and
justice system are spelled out in the form of a narrative, thus making it easier for the reader to
remain engaged. Brian Stevenson focuses on a variety of factors and their contribution to mass
incarceration such as a lack of knowledge about mental health and the deterioration of one s well
being as a result of imprisonment. He utilizes anecdotes

Chinese Rejection Movement
From the 1850s, political agitation and financial weights at home provoked many Chinese settlers
to move toward the western areas of the United States looking for transitory work. Many took low

administration ventures. The 1890 decennial census reports a Chinese conceived inhabitant
populace surpassing 100,000; records demonstrate that almost 300,000 Chinese workers entered the
United Statesin the vicinity of 1850 and 1889, however antiquarians evaluate that the same number

hostility to Chinese Migrants causing ethnic segregation, in the U.S. Congress passed the Chinese

Karl Polanyi s (1944/1957) Societies and Economic Systems, The Great Transformation, provides
a historical background to the structure of markets before the modern era. It is important to first
differentiate between markets and the market economy in order to understand the factors that
make up economies. The market economy is a self regulating system of markets that is directed
by market prices and nothing but market prices (p. 43). Polanyi argues that having an economy of
some form is essential to the survival of a society, however, he notices that pervious societies
successfully existed with no evidence of market control (p. 43). Markets have existed since the

44). Max Weber was one of the first contemporary historians to reject the idea that primeval
economies provide no significance to modern economy, he emphasizes the changelessness of
man as a social being (Polanyi, 1944, p. 46). Polanyi (1944) explains that man s economy, as a
rule, is submerged in his social relationships meaning that individuals place their social
standings, social claims, and social assets at higher value, rather than economic motives/material
goods (p. 46). In primitive economies, production and distribution is enforced through the
principles of reciprocity and redistribution. Reciprocity is observed in families and kinship; this
is explained through an example of Trobriand Islanders of Western Melanesia culture (Polanyi,
1944, p. 47). This civilization uses a matrilineal system; the male in the family is recognized for
his good behaviour if he offers the best crops to his sister and her family; however, if he fails, his
reputation (which is extremely valuable) is at risk and he will not earn material benefits in

Social Security Tax
Taxes are a necessary evil in any civilization. In order to keep the government running and pay for
goods and services, like police and a defense force, everyone must pay their fair share so that
money can be collected to foot the bill, so to speak. Social Security is one such service. The Social
Security program helps seniors to be able to live in retirement and also helps the less fortunate who
need government assistance for various reasons. While most citizens pay their fair share of the tax,
there is a bias in the system towards the very rich. This bias makes the Social Security tax not only
a recessive tax, but also one that unfairly burdens the less fortunate with the bulk of the costs. The

The higher a person s income above the taxation cap, the less of a percentage of their income
they pay into the system. It is thus possible for a person who makes $40,000 a year to pay a
higher tax rate than a person who makes $1,000,000 a year. Thus, Social Security must be
considered a recessive tax.
Furthermore, one must take into account who in fact will be receiving the benefits of the Social
Security Program. It is logical to assume those who have better access to health care and the
ability to pay for health care costs will live longer than those who do not. Moreover, the nature
of one s work would also affect health through injuries and bodily strain through manual labor.
The wealthier a person is, the more likely they are to live a long life. It is fairly clear that the
Social Security Tax affects the poor far more than it does the rich. Even among those under the
tax cap, the more money one has, the more one can do to prolong their existence. The sad fact is
that the lower an individual s income, the more the tax becomes detrimental to their daily life and
less likely they are to ever receive the benefits of the program they have paid into.
The way the tax affects the poor does not seem fair. The way the tax affects a large chuck on the
middle class does not seem fair. In reality, the way the tax treats anyone making equal to or less

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Death Penalty In The...
Death Penalty should be implemented again here in the Philippines
People have different opinions and ideas regarding the issue on death penalty. In fact, this death
penalty is still a debatable issue and requires the opinions of people, researchers, and experts.
Mostly people may say that they are not in favor of this penalty for it is cruel. People may say
that death penalty may not be a possible solution for the crimes and injustices happening around us.
But, people got wrong with this idea, with this statement because this death penalty is in fact, a
good and a possible solution for what is happening right now. Death penalty could provide
advantages to us and surely we could really benefit from these advantages.
Death penalty should be implemented again here in the Philippines so that justice will prevail,
there could be an effective way to ban criminals, there could be a suitable punishment, the people

Right now, we may observe that when criminals are just being put into prison, crimes are still
going on and it became more and more. It is like criminals are still being given the freedom to do
things again and again. So with death penalty, it may help lessen the crimes and it may create an
effective way to ban criminals. With this penalty, it may lead people in giving up for committing a
crime. First, people may or would think twice or more than twice with their decisions and second,
people may change their minds and would decide to not commit a crime. Also with death penalty, it

Donatello And Chaucer
The Renaissance was a time where education and an understanding of the world was promoted. Art
and architecture were valued and new styles of art were introduced. Two people who had an impact
on the world, both now and during the Renaissance are Donatello and Geoffrey Chaucer.
Donatello was born in 1386 and was the son of Niccolo Di Betto Bardi. He was a sculptor and
was known for his lifelike and detailed sculptures. He was an apprentice of Lorenzo Ghiberti, who
taught him about the science of metals and how to create them. In 1443 he made the bronze
equestrian statue Gattamelata, after the deceased warrior Erasmo De Narni. It had been the first
bronze statue since roman times and created conflict. It would become the baseline for many future
equestrian monuments in Italy and Europe. In 1445 he completed the Magdalene Penitentiary, a
twisted figure commissioned by the Santa Maria Del Cestello convent to motivate the prostitutes
there to repent. His most important work, the bronze version of David was five feet tall and was
commissioned by Cosimo De Medici. (Donatello biography, 2016.) As Donatello s work became
popular, Cosimo De Medici would become a very close friend to him and commissioned most of his
work.
Another man who played a big part of the Renaissance was Geoffrey Chaucer. Geoffrey Chaucer
was born circa 1340 in London, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The style before Chaucer s style was plain, simple, and effortless. Geoffrey Chaucer changed
that. He used more lengthy words with more meaning. He combined words from different
languages in his poems such as Greek, Latin, Arabic, German, and French. Chaucer also broke
out of the medieval alliterative tradition and write in accentual syllabic metre. Shakespeare was
inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer. Shakespeare s Troilus and Cressida is inspired from Chaucer s
Troilus and Criseyde (Geoffrey Chaucer, 2008). Geoffrey used other styles to make his own and

Family Systems is that every contributing factor is taken into account because we cannot

Random Family follows an extended family living in the Bronx, bonded by blood, love, and their
commitments to each other. Throughout their lives, these individuals interact with various public
health and social services, yet their experiences demonstrate the numerous gaps in services
provided and moreover how critical access is. Despite some successful points of entry, Coco s
story highlights the significant adversity she and her children face on a regular basis. This paper

experience various health problems; they receive adequate support for some but not all. Pearl, born
three months premature, could have fit into the palm of one hand (p. 210). Released after six
months, Pearl required significant medical interventions for her to stay alive and healthy. She
required multiple asthma treatments a day, and took a many medications for her health issues.
Additionally, she required constant attention and support from her familymembers; this included
visits to the doctor, medicine and treatments, and observation for oncoming seizures. Coco s oldest

Examples Of Flattery In Julius Caesar
One of the themes from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is that power and flattery can
affect people and what they believe. It is discovered in Act I of Julius Caesar that Caesar himself is
in a strong position of power. A follower by the name Mark Antony claimed that when Caesar says
do this , it is perform d. (sic) Julius Caesars power was able to control lives of those around him in
such a way that it put fear into certain people. As the plot of Julius Caesar thickens, his power
inevitably led to his downfall. In Act II and Act III , Brutus had his own sense of power such that
others respected him and accepted the way he did things, such as plot against Caesar. Brutus used

Wal Mart Company Overview Essay
Basic History Overview
Wal Mart s history is one of innovation, leadership and success. It started with a single store in
Rogers, Arkansas in 1962 and has grown to what is now the world s largest and arguably, the most
emulated retailer. Some researchers refer to Wal Mart as the industry trendsetter. Today, this retailing
pioneer has annual revenues of over $100 billion, 3,000 stores and more than 750,000 employees
worldwide. Wal Mart operates each store, from the products it stocks, to the front end equipment
that helps speed checkout, with the same philosophy: provide everyday low prices and superior
customer service. Lower prices also eliminate the expense of frequent sales promotions and sales
are more predictable. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What tactics has it used to become a major global retailer?
Wal Mart s success is mainly based on its concentration of a single business strategy. This strategy
has achieved enviable success over the last three decades without relying upon diversification to
sustain its growth and competitive advantages. In a sense, Wal Mart s low prices, service, and
smile are their leading marketing strategies. However, there is risk in this strategy, because
concentration on a single business strategy is similar to putting all of a firm s eggs in one
industry basket . On the business side, Wal Mart is the country s most sophisticated retailer in
terms of using information systems. Their cross docking inventory and transportation services
able them to have the goods needed by the consumer at all times. In order for Wal Mart to
become a major global retailer, they have closely examined and utilized tactics to profit from their
many stores. One great tactic is starting free trade zone distribution centers, in turn, saving almost
$500,000 annually. Another tactic includes their service from when you walk in the store to when
you leave. Also, their bread and butter is again the technology they utilize. They can track how
much of one item has been sold on any giving day, and if not a hot commodity at one store, they
will ship it out to another where it is being sold much faster.
2. Can Wal Mart sustain its competitive advantage in global retailing?

Issues Of Modern Society s Racial Discrimination
Andy Xiao ASTU 100A February 8th, 2016
Issues of Modern Society s Racial Discrimination Is the society s draconian attendance towards
the people of distinguishable race a fair measure of precaution or an act of discrimination? In the
society we live in today, the enactment of racial bias has made a monumental impact, shaping
many individuals lives by default. However, is it fair for the innocent individuals to be shrouded
with the burden of being a particular race ? After witnessing, the incident of Ferguson, I became
dreadfully discontented to discovered that people today have self established the immense belief
that people of color are the primary cause of danger, and therefore, they must be regarded as
hazardous creatures. Moreover, the reason triggering the detrimental policing was due to the color
of the victims, illustrating the ugly truth of racial profiling still remains intact to our society.
Although racial profiling and prejudice are disavowed publicly by Americans, many statistics and
research on implicit racial bias debated the citizens of the United States still perceive a person s
physical in determining their likeliness to committee crime (Bornstein, Avram). Unfortunately, it is
ingrained in today s society that institutional structures demonstrate persistent inequality and
unequal distribution of societal resources (White, Rob).

Strong Music Education
Three fifths of the United States have made cuts to their music programs. Studies have shown that
schools with good music education programs help students perform better on standardized tests.
Many famous businessmen and woman also attribute their success to their musical background.
Therefore schools should have strong musiceducationprograms so their students develop necessary
skills for their careers, communicate better with others, and score higher on tests.
First things first, the study of music develops necessary skills in the future of children s careers.
Many celebrities and accomplished entrepreneurs have stated that their music education has
helped them develop useful skills for their career. Joanne Lipman quotes Chuck Todd in her
article Is Music the Key to Success? , he says, I ve always believed the reason I ve gotten ahead is
by outworking other people . Todd has realized that practicing his french horn ... Show more content

In the opinion of many it takes away from valuable time in other subjects. This is incorrect. When
children gain music education they are able to become proficient in their classes. So the time out of
class isn t making students less smart, it makes them more smart. Developing skills like endurance,
creative thinking, and collaboration also come with music. There are many benefits to instructing
children in music, so cutting the program would damage learning.
All things considered, it doesn t make sense why states would cut the music programs of their
schools. When students receive education they continue to grow and progress academically; in a
like manner it is the same with music education. They are also being prepared to live in the real
world by learning how to work at something until it s perfect and think of new solutions to
problems. Therefore, schools should have strong music programs to help their students be

Psychological Analysis of Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad Watching the Breaking Bad series helped me understand how one s superego can
deteriorate into their id following Freud s psychoanalytic theory. Walter White, the anti hero,
takes us on a journey which vividly illustrates Freud s thesis. From watching the series and
reading critiques on the Freudian aspect, I will develop my own report on: How ones selfishness
takes over causing them to be driven by their id ~ Focusing on Walter White from Breaking Bad
The balance between the angel (superego) on the right and the devil (id) on the left is the
primary principle surrounding Sigmund Freud s theory that ones id and superego is the
framework for our psychology. Breaking Bad (2008 2013), a TV series created by Vince
Gilligan is a leading example of Freud s theory as we are taken on a passage of the life of Walter
White. We gain insights into his psychology, observing him how Sigmund Freud may have. As
Walter s train of thought changes throughout the series, we can directly relate it to Freud s
Psychoanalytic Theory. A high school chemistry teacher who did everything by the book, not
putting a finger out of line is who we are greeted by on the first episodes of Breaking Bad. Walter
White is portrayed initially as a passive man who is careful to do everything morally, his
superego strongly evident within him. This is clearly shown in the first episode Pilot (season 1,
episode 1) when Walter is working at the car wash and his boss makes him

  • 2. Martin Scorsese s Film, Taxi Driver Essay Synopsis Vietnam veteran Travis Bicklea finds that his life has been turned upside down after returning America from the battle field. He suffers from the insomnia and sense of isolation, which leads him to take a job as taxi driver at night; many of his customers represent the people from the lowest class of society: prostitutes, adulterous husbands and wenchers. Since Travis has promised the cab company that he will drive anywhere, at anytime, his likelihood of seeing the best of human nature is fairly slim. So, he tries to create an extra occupational life for himself. He befriends Betsy, a beautiful girl working at a Senator s campaign office. Unluckily, with on possession of the slightest amount of social skills, Travis takes her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Especially in a scene where Bickle saves a manВЎВЇs life from a robbery where he gets away with murder as the clerk would beat up the dead manВЎВЇs body. Though it might have seem gruesome at the time, Scorsese doesnВЎВЇt pull back where he doesnВЎВЇt give any clear answer of Bickle, in the terms of becoming normal. This is by far some top notch directing from one of NYCВЎВЇs greatest visionaries. In Taxi Driver, Scorsese manages his camera angles and editing to emphasize Travis seeing the world through glass or mirrors, especially the windshield and rear view mirror of the taxi, through which all major characters enter Taxi Driver: Betsy through the panes of an all glass office; Palantine through his rear view mirror; and Iris and Sport in a fleeting glance in his mirror. As Travis meets with a black market gun dealer, and in this scene the weapon literally becomes the organ of perception. Scorsese situates his camera on Travis arm as that arm takes the weapon and slowly pans it across the window looking down on the street below. Finally, in the scene which has made Travis Bickle a cinematic icon ( Are you talking to me? ), Travis looks into his mirror, challenges imaginary adversaries, and draws his various weapons in assault. The ambiguity of the image is poignant: Travis looks into a mirror and makes a self destructive gesture foreshadowing his attempted suicide at the climax of the film, and Travis peers through the looking glass and ... • 3. The Mono Tale Of The Hero s Journey A Story within a Story In our current society, literacy is defined as the ability to read and write. Though this is a common trait among individuals in our society, it is one that I view unique to every individual who had the opportunity to obtain it. I will retell my literacy journey in a way that encompasses one of my favorite theories in writing, the mono tale of the Hero s Journey by Joseph Campbell. This theory states that the Hero s journey is a pattern in a narrative that forms the basic template of all great stories (Gunn 1). Call to adventure My childhood has revolved in the same area. Born on the 7th of the 7th month of the year 1997 at 7:37pm at a hospital seven minutes away from where my parents resided I never considered myself special in any way. The first years of my life were a blur of memories reinforced with photographic evidence whilst containing vivid recollections of key events. • 4. Social Class And Underachievement In Sociology Pursuing this discussion further, it could be implied that there is a connection drawn between education and social class. Usually when conferring about these two aspects, social class and underachievement becomes the focus of attention. Working class children experience a much greater cultural clash when they enter schoolthan those from more privellaged homes (Giddens and Griffiths, 2006, p.710). Gillborn and Youdell (2000) took this further suggesting how teachers believed that ability was fixed (Darmody, Tyrrell and Song, 2011) and saw working class pupils as having less ability and as lower achievers. Dunne and Gazeley (2008) also believe that underachievers came from working class backgrounds and were labelled as underachievers which resulted in many internalizing it and living up to the self fulfilling prophecy. Both sociologists defined working class underachievement in a manner which was beyond outside their control by locating their reasoning on aspects such as a low quality of life at home for such individuals (Lawson, Heaton and Brown, 2010). And reflected in the minutiae of teachers perception and interactions with students (Youdell, 2006, p.15) this is when teachers expectations of working class students as lazy trouble some and middle class pupils as bright (Hargreaves, 1967) is translated into actual outcomes affecting the educational achievement of different social classes. ... On the ****** of September, the Oley Valley High School band had the privilege to be included in the Penn State Band Jam something only twelve bands out of the state have the ability to do. • 6. Al Qaeda Of The United States September 11th 2001 is a day Americans will remember for the rest of their lives. This was the day Al Qaeda, a radical Islamic group organized by Osama Bin Laden in the 1990 s, terrorized America. Al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and executed suicide attacks on four sites in the United States of America. The first two of the airplanes were flown into the Twin Towers in New York City, another hit the Pentagon in Washington DC and the last plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, but could have been headed towards the White House or United States capital building. (The 1993 Trade Center Bombing) and thousands were injured in some way. Another major terrorist attack executed by Al Qaeda was the USS Cole Bombing. In October of 2000, while in Aden, Yemen the USS Cole made a rest stop to refuel. Meanwhile two suicide bombers carried explosives on a small motor boat next to the USS Cole, The blast ripped a 40 foot wide hole near the waterline of the Cole, killing 17 American sailors and injuring many more. (The USS Cole Bombing) It did not stop there, before 9/11, These are just a few of the planned attacks on America by Al Qaeda prior to 9/11, but none of them were as radical as 9/11. Three main issues that changed significantly before and after 9/11 was homeland security, war, and battling terrorism. Homeland Security is a major byproduct that evolved after 9/11. America s Homeland Security s goal is to guarantee that America is safe, guarded, and buoyant against terrorist attacks and other harmful acts. Margaret Steffler s A Complicated Kindness Margaret Steffler s article, Fragments and Absences, states, Language in A Complicated Kindness, constructed, responded to, and commented on by Nomi as first person narrator, demonstrates a linguistic fragmentation comparable to the material fragments surrounding the deserted daughter and sister (5). To understand this comment further, we have to analyze A Complicated Kindness. In Miriam Toews novel, we focus on the protagonists Naomi Nomi Nickel; she is a curious and defiant sixteen year old who is developing in a kind of stunted world, or as she states a non progressive community (11). Nomi is trying to find herself, and this brings her into conflict with the community, and its authorities, especially her uncle Hans The Mouth Rosenfeldt... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her narration is filled with constant deviations, jumping around, and incomplete endings; her inability to maintain focus, it seems, is stated at the very beginning of the novel, Nomi has a problem with endings (1). So, instead of an ending, she simply states a memory, or begins another story; we can see this in the spaces between some paragraphs, the lines that indicate a beginning of a new fragment, or simply a new chapter. Another example of her inability to conclude is the novels ending, it seems like she is writing to her teacher her final assignment. In the assignment she ends it by saying she will do things like leave and start a new life, but in actuality she hasn t done anything she is still sitting in the empty house, so the reader is left wondering, did Nomi really get out of the Mennonite community? He approached the house wearily, noting with growing horror its advanced, albeit subtle, state of decay; however the labyrinth of phantasm that composed its interior belied the crumbling edifice... Poe s gothic tale has inspired generations of readers with his unique style of rich detail and sheer horror. In, The Fall of the House of Usherone finds the house mysteriously connected with its inhabitants. As they slowly fall into a state of decay, both mental and physical, so also does its structure weaken, eventually collapsing into the tarn in which it was standing, as its tenants fall prey to the strain of body and mind. He spends his days painting the most bizarre pictures, like that of a deep tunnel lit from within by invisible sources of colored light; playing pieces he composes extemporaneously on his guitar, then reciting to these melodies incoherent lyrics revealing a mind in torment. As his sister s condition worsens and finally is ended by her death, he becomes almost maniacal in his pursuit of the fantastic. Both the narrator and Roderick are horrified by her appearance of life, even triumphing over her disease, and wonder as they lock her in an old keep for a fortnight. Poe does not fail to inspire within the reader a sense of awe in her death, nor does he spare the lurid details of the terror lurking within this burial scene of the lady Madeline. And so it is the beginning of the end. Soon Roderick takes to pacing all about the dark house, his mental condition deteriorating no less rapidly than his physical; and even that has nearly reached its last stages of deterioration. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. • 9. Chekhov s Portrayal of Women Chekhov s portrayal of women Name Course Instructor Institution Date The stories of Anton Chekhov mark a focal moment in European fiction. This is the point where 19th realist caucus of the short stories started their transformation into modern form. As such, his work straddles two traditions. The first is that of the anti romantic realism which has a sharp observation of external social detail. It has human behavior conveyed within tight plot. The second is the modern psychological realism in which the action in typically internal and expressed in associative narrative that is built on epiphanic moments. In consideration of the two sides, Chekhov developed powerful personal styles that presage modernism without losing traditional frills of the form. This essay will discuss the Chekhov s portrayal of women. Chekhov in The Name Day Party focuses on Olga and her relationship with her husband, Chekhov appreciation for women is portrayed (Finke, 2005). Chekhov s work maintains a continuity of appreciation for the endurance and humaneness of women in the face of afflicted and patriarchal prejudice that fits in this feminist oriented era. Chekhov, though not liberal or conservative politically have rejected all theories that generalize about life. Chekhov instead has put his faith in the people. The term food desert or an area with limited or no access to healthy, affordable and nutritious food was coined during a U.K. Study into food accessibility for those in the lowest income neighborhoods which contained no major grocery store and had the lowest rate of car ownership. If a significant portion of the people on public assistance cannot afford to eat healthfully and furthermore do not have the ability or the nutritional education necessary to live a healthy lifestyle this has immediate effects on the growing epidemics of obesity, heart disease and other lifestyle related illnesses and on the health system that is already at capacity. Three key elements are described in Sparks piece: proximity, variety and competition. Proximity is important because research shows low income people are less likely to own an automobile. Variety is important because research into retail choice suggests people value variety and do not always shop at the supermarket that is closest to home (Handy,1996). Finally, competition is an accepted price control mechanism, which is important when evaluating access for low income populations. (Sparks). These are described as the most important factors because they will play biggest role in where a person chooses to shop for food given the choice. Not all the experts agree however that the prevalence of fast food and the limited access of fresh food is the driving factor in the rise of obesity. A study conducted by the RAND corporation a non profit federally funded research center recently released a study that found that among adults the neighborhood food environment had little or no relation to the adult subjects ... Communicating is how we get a better understanding of one another s perception of things, as well as how we help someone to better understand ours. • 12. William Blake And The French Revolution Since the beginning of modern times, the world has seen an arrival of conservative values in political theorists. Thomas J. J. Altizer believes radical theology is more silent than ever before and that, although William Blake was universally considered to be a madman in his time, his work as a poet and painter is widely recognised as a revolutionary visionary (Altizer, Pg. 33). It is clear that, had the French Revolution not happened, Blake probably would have been a mere poet and water colourist, with a turn to eccentricity. The French Revolution influenced many people all over the globe, including the radicals in London, to push and demand for immediate change. William Blake, a radical himself, was unable to stand by when the violation of rights and abuse of power was rampant and as a result he produced his revolutionary collection of poems Songs of Innocence and Songs of experience . Blake realised that some of his radical beliefs, that were evident in his work, were certainly going to be unpopular but he was determined to evoke immediate change by using his poetry as a weapon to force people to look at the world from many perspectives. The world in which Blake lived in was, for example; a world that thought to be proud in one s achievements was sinful, or to give freely to the poor was frowned upon, as to do so might lead them to become discontent with their lot. It is apparent that Blake was risking everything, ready to appear before the world, preaching his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All characters who find the strength to break down with traditions and norms of the society and start living the way they feel like are the ones who find happiness or, at least desire to keep living and have a purpose. One of those characters is definitely Harper who finds power to free herself from the loveless marriage and strict religious codes under which she was raised. Similarly, Louis who has been tormented by the Jewish sense of guilt, by the end of the play manages to overcome this and accept himself fully with all the flaws that he has and tries to live with it. In essence, this statement can be applied to individuals entrapped within society at large, remorsefully witnessing their own true identities smothered under the crushing weight of norms and stigmas (Reynolds, 2010). The ones who suffer the most are those in the minority; therefore, it is incumbent on the self to do whatever it takes to be perceived as a member of the majority (Reynolds 2010). First, the author uses flashbacks for us to get a sense what happened before the crash and what her personal feelings are. The author uses flashbacks for us because the readers do not know what happened before the accident and for us to get a sense on why she wants to or maybe does not want to live. With the help of these we understand why she is feeling and the reason she has these feelings. Flashbacks also help us feel apart of the story and intrigue us to want to read more. Secondly, another reason on why the author uses flashbacks... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She shows us on how she wants to fight and how she does not want to fight to wake up from her coma. The nurses has been trying to give her encouragement and that it is her choice to stay alive. An example from the book would be .... adjusts my IV and my monitors with the other. Then she smooths a lock of hair from my forehead. You hang in there, she tells me (Foreman 22). As one can see from this quote this shows that Mia can hear what everyone is saying and that she has a chance to live if she believes in herself to live. Mia still has a chance to fight and she if she will survive to wake up. Lastly, the final reason that the author uses flashbacks is because she is an extremely talented musician. Forman uses this a aspect to strive for her to wake up and live. Mia lived in a household where rock and punk music were normal to listen to. (Forman) Mia was quite unique and different out of her family because she took a liking to classical music and was extremely skilled at playing the cello. Mia has succeeded the standards for her age in the cello and she has auditioned for Juilliard in hoping that she will be one of the best. It is widely known that the United Statesand Islamic countries have had military conflict in the past, with examples such as the September 11th attacks or the location and assassination of Osama Bin Laden, however the negative social interaction between these two communities is seldom addressed within western society. After the fall of ancient Rome, Europe wallowed in centuries of relative darkness. There was little learning, commence, or travel. Then, in about 1400, in Florence, there was a Renaissance. This exciting rebirth of the culture of ancient Greece and Rome swept from Florence to all across Europe. Artists rediscovered the wonder of nature and the human body. Their art expressed the optimism and confidence of the new age. The Western civilization made up for lost centuries with huge gains in science, economics, and art. • 32. Characteristics Of Post Impressionism Post Impressionism encompasses a wide range of distinct artistic styles that all share the common motivation of responding to the opticality of the Impressionist movement. The stylistic variations assembled under the general banner of Post Impressionism range from the scientifically oriented Neo Impressionism to the lush Symbolism, but all concentrated on the subjective vision of the artist. Symbolic and highly personal meanings were particularly important to Post Impressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. Rejecting interest in depicting the observed world, they instead looked to their memories and emotions in order to connect with the viewer on a deeper level. Structure, order, and the optical effects of color dominated the aesthetic vision of Post Impressionists like Paul CГ©zanne, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac. Rather than merely represent their surroundings, they relied upon the interrelations of color and shape to describe the world around them. Despite the various individualized styles, most Post Impressionists focused on abstract form and pattern in the application of paint to the surface of the canvas. The label Post Impressionismwas never used by the Post Impressionists themselves. It was coined in 1910 by Roger Fry when he staged an exhibition in London called Manet and the Post Impressionists (Munry, 2017). The market economy is a self regulating system of markets that is directed by market prices and nothing but market prices (p. 43). Polanyi argues that having an economy of some form is essential to the survival of a society, however, he notices that pervious societies successfully existed with no evidence of market control (p. 43). Max Weber was one of the first contemporary historians to reject the idea that primeval economies provide no significance to modern economy, he emphasizes the changelessness of man as a social being (Polanyi, 1944, p. 46). Polanyi (1944) explains that man s economy, as a rule, is submerged in his social relationships meaning that individuals place their social standings, social claims, and social assets at higher value, rather than economic motives/material goods (p. 46). In primitive economies, production and distribution is enforced through the principles of reciprocity and redistribution. Reciprocity is observed in families and kinship; this is explained through an example of Trobriand Islanders of Western Melanesia culture (Polanyi, 1944, p. 47). This civilization uses a matrilineal system; the male in the family is recognized for his good behaviour if he offers the best crops to his sister and her family; however, if he fails, his reputation (which is extremely valuable) is at risk and he will not earn material benefits in exchange (Polanyi, 1944, p. ... • 40. Informal Research Paper Social Security Tax Taxes are a necessary evil in any civilization. In order to keep the government running and pay for goods and services, like police and a defense force, everyone must pay their fair share so that money can be collected to foot the bill, so to speak. Social Security is one such service. The Social Security program helps seniors to be able to live in retirement and also helps the less fortunate who need government assistance for various reasons. While most citizens pay their fair share of the tax, there is a bias in the system towards the very rich. This bias makes the Social Security tax not only a recessive tax, but also one that unfairly burdens the less fortunate with the bulk of the costs. The tax ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The higher a person s income above the taxation cap, the less of a percentage of their income they pay into the system. It is thus possible for a person who makes $40,000 a year to pay a higher tax rate than a person who makes $1,000,000 a year. Thus, Social Security must be considered a recessive tax. Furthermore, one must take into account who in fact will be receiving the benefits of the Social Security Program. It is logical to assume those who have better access to health care and the ability to pay for health care costs will live longer than those who do not. Moreover, the nature of one s work would also affect health through injuries and bodily strain through manual labor. The wealthier a person is, the more likely they are to live a long life. It is fairly clear that the Social Security Tax affects the poor far more than it does the rich. Even among those under the tax cap, the more money one has, the more one can do to prolong their existence. The sad fact is that the lower an individual s income, the more the tax becomes detrimental to their daily life and less likely they are to ever receive the benefits of the program they have paid into. The way the tax affects the poor does not seem fair. The way the tax affects a large chuck on the middle class does not seem fair. In reality, the way the tax treats anyone making equal to or less than $110,100 does not seem fair. Taxes affect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
