How Is Offred Presented In The Handmaid s Tale
Offred Offred is the protagonist and narrator of the The Handmaid s Tale . As one of the rare
fertile women in this dystopian world, she is put at the bottom of the social hierarchy as a
Handmaid, where her sole purpose is to provide children for the Commander and his Wife.
Despite being the protagonist, Offred is a passive character who generally conforms to the
social stereotypes in Gilead due to her cowardice. Despite this, there are some moments where
the reader is able to acknowledge the degree of power she holds within this society. According to
critic Coral Ann Howells, those at the bottom don t have power , yet Carol L. Beran argues that
they have some kind of special power , and indeed, Offred is not completely powerless in
Gileadean society. All women in Gilead have a modicum of power, and Offred is no exception.
She gains her power through her biology and sexuality, because men in Gilead are not allowed a
woman until they become an Angel, a high position in the social hierarchy. Offred s power is
often hidden or oppressed by the system the Sons of Jacob have created. This is seen when
Offred says doubled, I walk down the street (Atwood) when recounting the experience of shopping
with her partner, Ofglen. Here, Offred is literally doubled due to Ofglen walking alongside her in
identical clothing, which could suggest the lack of power due to the loss of identity. This also
illustrates how the Sons of Jacob attempt women from using their power by using them as

Egypt And Inca Similarities
Amanda Heatwole Dr. Julie Smith HS 101.01 September 3, 2015 Egyptian and Incas
Comparison Egyptians and Incas may be two different cultures on opposite sides of the world,
but every civilization also has similarities amongst its characteristics. Both the Egyptians and
Incas had various types of tools they created and/or used as well as their own methods of
communication. Both Egyptians and Incas used a variety of tools for multiple purposes. The
Egyptians crafted hoes, sickles, scoops, and baskets for agricultural use. Plows lead by either
oxen or people were also used for their crops. Aqueducts were created to store water from the Nile
River for various uses. Bronze, iron and copper were utilized in handcrafting axe heads, knives,...

The Nile River acted as a highway for the Egyptians, while the Incas actually constructed their
own roads and highways to areas of importance. Egyptian beliefs were communicated by word of
mouth before writing became established. As writing developed, inscriptions of hieroglyphics
were used to communicate religious texts into walls of buildings such as tombs for the noblemen
and kings. Political texts were inscribed on stone or written on papyrus using hieroglyphics.
Hieratic was developed to communicate more quickly throughout daily life and was taught
throughout Egyptian schools. Like the Egyptians, Incas had their own language, though it was
only a spoken one known as Quechua. If a message needed sent, the Incas would send a runner to
relay the message. Incas created a khipus (a cord with strings hanging from it, some with knots in
them). The knots in the khipus were used to record and track census data such as financial debts or
labor obligations, as well as other statistical records. The Incas did not have a writing system like
the Egyptians, but they utilized their natural resources to create a system of tracking

Analysis Of The Precession Of Simulacra
Introduction
Lee Harvey Oswald. The name may conjure up specific memories of a living, breathing man for
those who knew him; but, for the general public, Lee Harvey Oswald was and will always be a
scarecrow of patched together media images and texts. This is due to the fact that our only access
to Oswald is through texts. To quote Lentricchia, Oswald is a person of, by, and for the image (2).
Image, here, can be understood as any textual representation of Oswald. In Libra, DeLillo goes
even further by portraying the living Oswald as a fragmented figure whose identity is already a
pastiche of texts and images that he has consumed. In his landmark essay, The Precession of
Simulacra, Baudrillard warns that [s]imulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential
being, or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a
hyperreal (par. 1). Through his consumption of texts, Oswald constructs an identity without
substance or reality: a hyperreal identity. Baudrillard cites a Borges tale about a ruler who
commissions a map the same size as his territory. After the empire falls, the remnants of the map
are still rotting away in the deserts. He believes that this story is helpful in describing what he
means by the precession of simulacra, and he alters the story, saying, The territory no longer
precedes the map, nor does it survive it. It is the real, and not the map, whose vestiges persist here
and there in the deserts (par. 1).

Evaluation Of The 10 Essential Public Health Services
This paper is about the evaluation of the 10 essential Public Health Services and how they can be
helpful in the prevention of HIV in communities across the nation. In addition, the paper depicts
how the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has been able to incorporate the 10
essential public health services in its fight against HIV disease. The paper will discuss the
assessment of the HIV disease situation in Chicago neighborhoods; policy development by the
Chicago Department of Public Healthand the assurance that solutions to priority problems are
based on scientific evidence. Furthermore, the interconnection of the various essential public health
service in the prevention and treatment of HIV and the support the department has for the families
of their resident that are afflicted with HIV virus will be discussed. Finally, an inferred conclusion
will be drawn from my research about the efficiency of the Chicago Department of Public Health
and their incorporation of the 10 essential public health functions in their services to those HIV
positive residents in the city of Chicago.
According to the CDC (2015), more than one million people are living with HIV in the United
States, and more than 50,000 become newly infected each year. Unfortunately, one in five
Americans living with HIV are unaware of their infection. I believe using the strategy which

The Rejection-Abuse Cycle
Psychology Domestic abuse often follows a certain pattern and that pattern is an infinite vicious
cycle. There are two types of abuse cycle. The name given for the first one this merciless cycle is
The Rejection Abuse Cycle (Brown, James, Taylor, 2010, p.280 307), which can be related to
social norms. The pattern is separated into four steps; (1) rejection, (2) threat to self, (3) defence
against threat, (4) abuse. Rejection happens when the man becomes aware of his partner is
rejecting him. Therefore, it triggers the man s previous experience of being rejected. After feeling
rejected, the man will sense a threat to his ego, evoking shame because social norms does not
allow men to be rejected by a woman (threat against self). To protect... Show more content on

PTSD is generally separated into four types; intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in
thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions. First, intrusive memories
happens when the woman relives the traumatic event. On a long term effect, women will be
scared to get into a relationship or are afraid because they do not want the abuse to happen again.
Second, avoidance is when the woman does not want to go back to places or do activities they
did with their abuser because it reminds them of the abuse. On a long term effect, women will
prefer to stay home, but that will only lead to depression and having suicidal thoughts. Third, is
when women get out of the abuse relationship, they will have a negative thought about the world
and people around them, they will lose faith in people, so they will choose to stay home and avoid
contact. Finally, they will suffer from lack of sleep or be easily frightened because their emotions
are very delicate. All these symptoms lead back to depression and suicidal thoughts until someone

Fistfight In Heaven
Throughout The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Sherman Alexie describes Indian
culture and life on the reservation. Alexie is the author of books, poems, and movie scripts, and he
grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington. In his writing, he remembers his Native
America history and their lifestyle after the European controlled their society. Throughout his
stories, the author tells the audience about the Indian culture and the problems and issues that
occurred inside the reservation. Of all the stories, I think Indian Educationis the most important in
the book because it describes a story about an Indian boy. The author shows the reader what it

I am interested to find out about Indian identity outside their society. After reading Alex s poem
Good Hair , I asked myself how important it is to be an Indian and what really means. I learned
from Alex book that he used to make up a character that tells the Indian history and culture that
follows from thousand years ago, but there are other Indian families who faced more struggle.
There are many stories from this the book that relate to the Indian education story. From other
chapters of the book, there are lots of Indians who are alcoholic and live with dreamless poverty
on the reservation. In the Indian culture, they believed skeletons are made of memories, dreams,
and voices. From those reasons, Indians never wears a watch because they think skeletons would
remind them. In another story from the book, the author uses unknown characters and describe
his troubles when he walks into the third Avenue 7 11, and he gets called to the police from the
store because of his dark skin and long hair. Another reason, he argued with his girlfriend because
of the criminal appearance that makes him trouble. Later that night, an unknown character is

Walt Disney s Perseverance And Imagination
The Magic of Disney can be attributed to Walt Disney s perseverance and imagination. Swearing
to never create another character he didn t have the license to, he created an animation studio in
Kansas, which went bankrupt shortly after. After moving to California, he set up shop and started
Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. One of the first real successes of the studio is a short in 1982
called Steamboat Willie, by Les Clark, which introduced the character later known as Mickey
Mouseand was the first time audiences experienced synchronized sound (TL). Walt s death in
1966 left the Empire in uncharted territory as the company had to learn how to fend for itself or
did with Walt and Nine Truly Old Men. They needed new talent and skilled animators, and Eric
Larson was the man for the job (W9OM).
In death Walt left $80 million behind, $38 million (47.5%) went to the founding and funding of an
animation program in Chouinard Art Institute, CalArts, room A113 (VF) (Quora). This class
reaped the benefits of Disney s monopoly on the animation industry and trained the next
generation of animators in the Disney way. This was originally Walt s goal and he was close to
starting class. However, he was inconveniently side tracked by dying and project was put on hold
till Larson adopted it. Students of this class include Tim Burton, Brad Bird, Glen Keane, Nancy
Beiman and many more, working on projects like The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, Cars, and The
Incredibles. The students talked about

Integral Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand what the client is feeling. This refers to the therapist s ability
to understand sensitively and accurately to the client s experience and feelings in the here and now,
but not sympathetically. An important part of the task of the person centered counselor is to follow
precisely what the client is feeling and to communicate to them that the therapist understands what
they are feeling. Integral empathycontributes to developing a therapeutic relationship,
understanding a client, and informing treatment strategies and interventions.

No-Kill Shelter Essay
No Kill Shelters During a crisis of pet overpopulation, it right to kill animals simply because they
are not wanted? Or is it ever right thing to do? The United States is faced with the problem of
what should be done with the excess of stray animals. This is a complex thing to solve, but that
doesn t mean killing the animals for space is right. Stray dogs and cats have just as much right
to a good home as pets that already have owners. No Kill shelters are beneficial, they provide a
safe, pet friendly environment that would help solve the problems of pet homelessness and

traditional shelters that euthanize to make space for more animals. On the other side are those
that call themselves no kill . They represent a rage of shelters from all over the country that won

States, According to one source, More than 600 shelters and that s just a fraction. The popularity
has put pressure on the other shelters to become no kill (Fasseas). Now there are two different
sides to the story, half of the people agrees upon euthanize animals for space and the other half
agrees that there should not be any kill shelters here in this area or anywhere in the country. Some
of the shelters in California are amazing, at Sonoma County s animal shelter has new policies for

Slavery Impact On Roman Economy
The impact of Slavery on the Roman Economy
I will split the economic impact of slave labor into the three major sectors often used by modern
economists (National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.).
1. Primary economies involve raw materials produced by farming, mining, logging, etc.
2. Secondary economy involves manufacturing of goods such as pottery, tools, and sundry goods.
3. Tertiary economy involves trade, and sales of goods.
Less indirect impacts such as the centralization of wealth, and the suppression of offshoot
economies, and the economic impacts on subgroups will also be discussed.
Primary Economy
With the introduction of cheap slave labor many raw materials, particularly in the area of farming
and mining could be produced at significantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When most of the workers are slaves with little disposable income, there is little net benefit to the
local economy. An additional factor is that newer and smaller companies usually employ more
people (National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.). Unfortunately, with the centralization of
wealth and power small farms and businesses were often suppressed or gobbled up by the wealthy.
Summary
The slave economy helped increase the inflow of wealth to Rome filling it s coffers and benefiting
the wealthy nobility which grew up to take advantage of it. It was the strength of this economy,
which helped Rome achieve Greatness. This however, came at a cost since that wealth was
unevenly distributed and used to suppress competition from the less wealthy. In addition, a
significant portion of the population was pushed into poverty resulting in a welfare state. Thus
resulting in a drain on the public coffers and the loss of productivity these people would normally
have provided.
I leave this discussion with a final thought. Rome was full of creative thinkers, architects, and
engineers. If Rome had managed to wean itself off of cheap slave labor, would solutions to rising
labor costs goaded them into the creation of an industrial revolution, 1500 years in advanced to our

The Influence Of Drug Use And Abuse
Over the course of the last twenty years, drug usage has changed rather dramatically. From the
kinds of drugs used to their potencies to how much is used, there are multiple factors to observe.
Some drugs that didn t even exist or were almost unheard of that long ago are some of the most
abused today and are growing in popularity. In this essay I will be analyzing how people use
drugs differently today than they did 20 years ago, in 1997, as opposed to how it is used today
in 2017. In addition to this, we will be looking at how this change is affecting society and whether
or not we re better off than we were in the late 1990s. To begin, Let s observe drug usage and abuse

Another newer drug and very dangerous drug to gain popularity is synthesized marijuana.
Despite all of this, many some drug usage and abuse hass decreased since 1997. Cocaine use is
one of the few that has gone down considerably, along with alcohol abuse some. Thanks to
several anti tobacco campaigns and similar agendas, tobacco use amongst Americans is declining
by quite a bit, and even more rapidly with teens. To conclude, in 2017 thanks to the efforts of
government sponsored campaigns tobacco and alcohol abuse has decreased dramatically since the
1990s, however newer and more powerful drugs like methamphetamine and synthesized marijuana
have gained in popularity over the course of 20 years, and other drugs including opioids and
heroin the like have grown to become the most dangerous and most used today. Now we will
observe the change in drug abuse from a direct source. When asked if drugs use has increased or
decreased since 1997, both of my subjects agreed it had increased. When I asked what drugs in
particular were more popular, the interviewed went along with the research and said meth, as well
as opioids like heroin. In addition to this, both participants agreed drugs are more dangerous now
more than ever. In particular, one participant said heroin was the most dangerous drug right now,
while the other said heroin and synthetic marijuana. To conclude, the

Essay about The Roman Military Reforms institued by Gaius...
The hypothesis of this report is that the military reforms instituted by Gaius Marius ultimately
paved the way for the fall of the Roman Republic. The reforms instituted by Marius were
designed as a way to strengthen the Republic by professionalizing the Roman military, but instead
resulted in long term political consequences that contributed to the decline of the Republic and
the creation of the Empire. In this report, the decline of the republic specifically refers to the loss
of the Senate s authority over Rome s generals. From 112 106 BC, a Numidian king called
Jurgurtha was engaged in a war with Rome due to an attempt to seize power from his half brother,
Adherbal. The Romans arrived due to the request of Adherbal, and the... Show more content on

As many of these new recruits did not fit in these categories, and were unable to provide their
own equipment, Marius arranged for the State to supply them with arms and armour. He then
offered the masses a permanent career as professional soldiers, and the opportunity to gain spoils
on the campaign. With little hope of gaining status in other ways, the masses flocked to join
Marius. The cause of this reform was largely due to recurring recruitment problems faced by the
Roman republic, as most soldiers were expected to return to their farms after long campaigns, but
since the campaigns were becoming increasingly longer due to the distance of the conflicts from
rome, the farms were left deserted and ruined do to prolonged absence of workers. As such, the
returning soldiers found themselves without property making them illegible for military service,
thus weakening the army. (William G. Sinnigen) As such, Marius believed these deficiencies in the
Roman army recruitment system needed urgent attention, and his solution was to offer those with
nothing the ability to have everything. Along with the new recruitment system, Marius also
improved and enhanced the military training by basing it upon those used and developed by
gladiators and also abolished the three different types of soldiers, each armed and positioned by
rank and experience, with cohorts of men universally armed and created the use of the eagle as the

Why Did The Great Chicago Fire Occurred In 1871
The Great Chicago Fire occurred in 1871. The first spark of the fire began in a nearby family
barn. Uncontrolled, the blaze lasted a few days, burning a large part of the city. After the fire was
put out, Chicago saw a period of rapid growth and development. The Great Fire was a devastating
event in Chicagos history, but in the end helped turn the cityinto a major US city.
The Great Chicago Fire was a tragic event to happen in the city s history. While the cause of this
major fire is unknown, Chicago s wood buildings and dry summer made the fire much worse.
There are a few theories to how this fire started, but what is known for sure is that it started in
the O Leary s barn. This particular fire lasted two days and spread quickly. Firefighters were
contacted, but were sent to the wrong place, causing chaos and delays as they tried to find the
fire. By the time firefighters got there, the fire was spreading from house to house, already
unmanageable. Before they knew it the fire had taken over the city. Within two days, the water
tank in the city had run out of water. Luckily before the fire moved further, on October 10 1871, it

Is Realism an Obsolete Theory, or Is It More Relevant Than...
Realism, as a way of interpreting international relations has often been conceived to be closely
tied to the Cold War. Realism, rooted in the experience of World War II and the Cold War, is said
to be undergoing a crisis of confidence largely because the lessons adduced do not convincingly
apply directly to the new realities of international relationsin the twenty first century (Clinton
2007:1) Worse still, if policymakers steadfastly adhere to realist precepts, they will have to navigate
the unchartered seas of the post Cold Wardisorder with a Cold War cartography, and blind devotion
to realismcould compromise their ability to prescribe paths to a more orderly and just system.

And with this, comes the realist concept of national interest. Realist ideology, statism, specifically,
suggests that survival and sovereignty of the state is its primary goals, and the very condition of
its existence. With this said, states do have the ability to take care of other actors interests and
needs in the international community out of something that could be called a moral responsibility
, but only if it somehow serves its own national interests in the process. Morgenthau (1949)
explains that state actors who pursue certain national interests and act aggressively resort to liberal
sentiment, as a convenient means of justifying their behaviour in the eyes of both the international
community, and their own people. This is not to say however, that some states are sincere in
certain good hearted pursuits. But it is indeed true that moral principles prove to be serviceable to
national interest (Morgenthau 1949:207). Machiavelli goes so far as to claim that morality is the
product of power (Carr 2001:63). Take for example the nineteenth century, in which the British
Empire was the global hegemon at the time. As a reason to explain imperialism and its colonial
aspirations, they advertised the theory of the White Man s Burden as a moral and social norm, in

An Investigation of Customization in ERP System...
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT, VOL. 56, NO. 4, NOVEMBER
2009 663 An Investigation of Customization in ERP System Implementations Marcus A.
Rothenberger and Mark Srite Abstract This research investigates why certain enterprise resource
planning (ERP) system adopters have pursued high levels of software customization during
implementation despite the generally accepted best practice heuristic of limiting customization.
Qualitative data from ERP adoption projects and consultants working with ERP implementations
have been collected. This study empirically identifies customization drivers and explains their
relationship to customization. The results suggest that high customization may occur because of:

Such decisions address the dilemma that all ERP adopters continuously face during the
implementation: whether to change the business process to п¬Ѓt the ERP system or whether to
change the ERP system to п¬Ѓt the business process. To minimize customization, the decision to
change the ERP system should only be made in rare circumstances, e.g., when a business process
cannot be changed without losing a competitive advantage. Furthermore, such decisions require
cooperation between the information technology (IT) and the operational departments, following
formal defined activities, which are part of a change management process. Thus, change
management is instrumental to ERP implementation. In fact, it was listed as one of the top п¬Ѓve
factors in a study of chief information officer (CIO) perceptions of critical success factors for
ERP projects [17]. The analysis of two implementation cases [7] confirms this notion as it
identifies change management as one of the major success factors. The issue of management and
employee readiness to implementing business process change is a common characteristic of
successful implementations. In a case study of a failed SAP R/3 implementation [13], the absence
of change management inhibited the broad involvement of employees in the implementation of
business changes required for the successful adoption of the ERP system standard processes. The
importance of business process reengineering and minimal customization was further confirmed

Utilitarianism In Chile
In the beginning the nomadic Araucanos had control over south Chile, and Incans had control

Chile became independent from Spain in 1818 when Bernado O Higgins and Jose DeSan Martin

of the modern state with a two party system and centralized government. To extend the Chilean
territory the dictator Diego Portales fought in a war with Peru from 1836 to 1839, three years long.

came. Usually when guards come to switch duty there s only a couple hundred. The guards are
there to protect us from attacks. Other countries always attack because we are so advanced in
technology and everything. They wantto try and steal what we have, but this was nothing usual.
There were thousands of guards flooding in from left and right. Everybody immediately thought
we were under attack, but the weird thing was there were no alarms or the voice of our President
telling us what was happening. As quick as we were alarmed we all of a sudden felt at ease. Just

Male Breast Cancer
Male Breast Cancer, Causes, Risk Factors and Prevention
By Istvan S Diego
Introduction
Notwithstanding that male breast cancer is a rare phenomenon, it is still possible. Such cases
account for only 1% of all breast cancer. The American Cancer Society forecasts that over 1,000
new cases of breast cancer in men will be diagnosed in 2010 ( Male Breast Cancer ). The survival
rate in men is lower than in women, mostly because men often report the symptoms of breast
cancer too late ( Male Breast Cancer ). The disease is more likely to spread, leaving many men
with less hope that treatment will lead to recovery. The main reasons of that are first of all the lack
of the research in this field that leads to the second reason that is men s ... Show more content on

Men with this condition have longer legs, a higher voice, and a thinner beard than average men
do. Their testicles are smaller than usual and do not produce functioning sperm cells, so the men
are infertile. Compared with other men, they have lower levels of androgens (male hormones)
and more estrogens (female hormones). For this reason, they often develop gynecomastia
(benign male breast growth) and have an increased risk of male breast cancer. * Radiation
exposure: A man whose chest area has been exposed to radiation (usually for treatment of a
cancer inside the chest such as Hodgkin s or non Hodgkin s lymphoma) has an increased risk of
developing breast cancer. * Liver disease: The liver plays an important role in sex hormone
metabolism by producing binding proteins, which carry the hormones in the blood. These binding
proteins affect the hormones activity. Men with severe liver disease such as cirrhosis have
relatively low levels of androgen activity and higher estrogen levels. For this reason, they may
have an increased risk of developing gynecomastia and breast cancer. * Estrogen treatment:
Estrogen related drugs are sometimes used in hormonal therapy of men with prostate cancer. This
treatment may cause a slight increase in breast cancer risk. However, this risk is small compared
with the benefits of this treatment in slowing the growth of prostate cancer. Men taking high doses

The Origins Of The Origin Of Mathematics
The Origins of Mathematics
The Origins When and where is the origins of mathematics?
The origins of mathematics accompanied the evolution of social systems in many ways. The social
development of any society requires some sort of calculation and number system. In the same way,
the arithmetic operations are essential for the development and interaction between people. Words
that describe numbers and operations that enable calculations are the basis for survival. The need to
count how many animals where available for hunting, and the number of people that needed to be
feed are just examples of the needs faced by a pre historic man. All this require the need to
develop words, sounds, or gestures that could be used to describe the numbers of objects and
animals, also they had to develop a type of a counting system that could have allowed them to make
the most basic mathematical operations, for example equal sharing of food. That can explain why
the need of mathematics was so important just from the beginning of times, and how it has been the
binding element that kept the early humans together and help them to coexist and develop into
what we are today. Since the invention of a numbers and counting systems occurred when people
started to live together and formed the first human society, mathematical scenes was the link that
helped them to for societies and to develop a type of communication system and in a way help them
to establish the first trading system which in turn,

Personal Narrative-Mandated Public Education System
Eric, I need you to be my monkey, I said, offering him a position in what was, in my twelve year
old mind, the con of a lifetime. Eric, as the ideal product of a state mandated public education
system, was a superb candidate for my morally debatable endeavor. He was just smart enough to
follow orders and even improvise (within set limits, of course) accordingly, yet not quite clever
enough as to devise a subterfuge of his own. His toothy smile flashed in the dark, damp
environment of the sleeping tent; this clearly was not his first con. I m in. I grinned back, wrapped
my arm around his shoulder, and walked off, concocting the ultimate scheme. One that, if we chose,

Shortly thereafter, cards began to circulate, and tactics that previously would only have been
employed during drastic psychological warfare quickly became commonplace. As time went on

indistinguishable from the truth, and elements that may very well have violated provisions of the
Hague and Geneva Conventions were instituted in increments. The little cousins started to squirm,
forced to deny themselves bathroom privileges upon penalty of forfeiture. The smoke began to

Fraternal Polyandry in Tibet Essay example
Although the various phenomena that involve multiple males involved with one female, have
always been fascinating to anthropologists, there does not seem to be one common explanation
for polyandry. This failure has raised questions about the similarities between the different
societies in which this type of behavior is observed in. From the point of view of Berrman (1975),
polyandry does not have a same manner in all societies and the basis, function, costs and
consequences of polyandry must be studied individually in each society (Goldstein, 1981).
Polyandry is the rarest form of marriageand has been observed in only four societies: the Toda, the
Marquesans, the Nayar and the Tibetans (Lee,1982). Even in polyandrous populations, most... Show

Polyandry may be a practical option in agriculturally based societies where resources are limited
and there are few productive tasks for women and children. In these societies, large families are
disadvantageous as they would only increase consumption without having any changes in
production levels. This situation may arise in societies like Tibet where the economy was based on
agricultural and farmland was a rare commodity (Lee,1982). Due to custom and the legal structure,
Tibet s land was controlled by the landed aristocracy, the government, or the church. Peasants paid
at least two thirds of the annual farm produce in rent. There was no gain in expanding the land and
increasing production since almost all the surplus was paid as rent or taxes. With land being a rare
commodity, the population did however benefit in continuity of tenancy from one generation to the
next, securing their right to occupy the land (Lee,1982).
Tibetan societies practiced fraternal polyandry, the most frequently encountered form by
anthropologists. The wife was therefore in union with men who were all brothers. When the sons of
one generation matured, they would then share one wife.

Dalida Research Paper
In a career that spanned four decades, 30 years, 1,000 songs, and earned her more than 90 gold
and platinum records, Egyptian born and French residing pop singer Dalida lived a fascinating
and tragic life of celebrity. After her breakout in 1956, Dalida s breathtaking beauty and distinctive
voice made her an instant star, which gave her all the riches and spoils one could hope for, but
amplified her vulnerabilites and weaknesses which fame and success exploited.
Directed by Liza Azuelos (LOL), the film tells the singer s story in a non linear way, beginning
with her lying to her brother in a French airport in 1967, then secretly heading to a Parisian hotel.
She is reeling from the recent suicide of her lover, burgeoning Italian pop singer Luigi Tenco, and
has decided to attempt to take her own life. Not successful, she then is moved to a facility and
doctors bring in those closest to her to learn more about her struggles.
We traverse through her life at a relatively rapid speed, making Dalida a film that quickly becomes
a highlight reel of a subject s life. Born Iolanda Gigliotti, she was bullied and rejected by her peers
in grade school and saw her family persecuted during World War II. Her vocal talents soon emerged
and in her early 20 s she was discovered by radio station magnate Lucien Morisse (NAME). So
taken with one another, Morisse left his wife for Iolanda and began managing her career.
Once stardom begin to swirl around Dalida, her rise is rather meteoric and

What Do Theories of Face Perception Tell Us About Object...
What do theories of face perception tell us about object perception in general?
Introduction
Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the human
face. The cognitive and neural processes in face recognition differ greatly from those observed for
object recognition. Both objects and faces are generally considered to be viewpoint dependent
meaning that performance in recognition is better when viewed from a familiar viewpoint.
However when considering Biederman s (1987) recognition by components theory he found that
objects can be recognised equally as easily from all viewpoints. This is due to his belief that
objects are recognised from the individual basic shapes that make the whole object; ... Show more

(Similar to effects noted in patients with Agnosia, to be further discussed.) However Tarr and
BГјlthoff (1995) found that when giving participants novel objects to recognise and extensive
practice at viewing the objects from a specified viewpoint that performance in object recognition
was better from familiar viewpoints than unfamiliar ones, which does not support Biedermans
viewpoint invariant theory. This result demonstrates viewpoint dependent where by object
recognition is slower and less accurate when viewed from different perspectives, this can be
compared to the importance of the inversion effect in face recognition where by faces are less
accurately recognised when viewed upside down.
This also requires us to identify the importance of expertise for both object recognition and face
recognition. Yin (1969) stated that individuals have a greater expertise at individuating faces.
The expertise hypothesis proposes that special visual processing for faces is due to humans
having expertise at individuating faces. Evidently humans are surrounded by faces from an early
age and there is some evidence suggesting that from birth, babies have a mechanism which
facilitates holistic processing of faces faster and more accurately (Nelson, 2001). So, just as
recognition of snakes and dangerous animals is innately hard wired to generate a fear response,
the same hard wired responses to faces may also be innate in order to

The Origins Of English Colonization Of The New World

failed due to unexpected conflicts with Native Americans. Jamestown, the first English colony

Breastfeeding Issues Essay
Breastfeeding issues
It is quite essential for the mother to nurse her own child by herself, there would be many factors
causing a problem while breastfeeding her child. It s common to face challenges at this age; I
would be jotting down some common breastfeeding issues and solutions to them as well. If these
won t help, it is advisable that you visit a medical expert nearby.
Baby doesn t latch
It can turn out to be frustrating things to deal having a baby that won t latch. It is one of the most
common problems.
The correct way to get your baby to latch is by getting naked from the waist up. Get your baby to
a semi reclining position only in its diaper. Keep his mouth on your chest, as soon as the baby is
ready, he might scoot down to the breast and should latch on. Skin to skin is a magical cure for a
non latching baby to get it latched. If you still have latch problems breastfeeding, consult help.
Sometimes, it is common that the baby sleeps within a few minutes after he gets latched, you
might be concerned whether he/she is even eating or not, the best way to figure that out is
waking him/her up and giving an eat signal, the way to do that is doing breast compressions
allowing milk to flow, do that gently so that you do not bruise yourself. The baby might respond to
this by swallowing or sucking, let go as soon as the sucking stops. Sometimes stroking the baby
under his/her chin can also encourage the baby to suck.

School shootings happen all too often. There were 16 school shootings in the first almost 6

One solution is to let teachers wear guns. In 32 out of 50 states it is allowed to as long as the
school administration allows it. Theoretically teachers would have to run through a training before
being allowed to wear guns in the classroom. Another solution can be to build standardized
classrooms with two doors. This makes an escape in an emergency situation much easier. The
probably most effective way of preventing school shootings and shootings in general is to repeal
and overwrite the Second Amendment. The second Amendment says that everyone in the United
States has the right to keep and bear arms. To repeal the second amendment the Congress has to
propose a new, overwritten Amendment and if two thirds of the house and states agree with it,
three fourths of the states have to agree with the change in a final vote. The main idea would be
that guns won t be completely banned but it would be made harder to buy an possess guns.
Another way to tackle the problem is to have more security at schools like airport like security
scanners and more school recourse officers to protect the students and the

The main focus of this study was to determine how social media use impacts social happiness.
The social happiness question is phrased as, How happy are you with your social life at Colby?
[with the following options] Very happy, Mostly happy, Indifferent, Not happy, Miserable I
transformed social happiness into a binary variable. If a participant selected Very Happy or Mostly
Happy they are considered socially happy at Colby. One challenge I ran into with this study was the
uneven categorical data responses from the survey. The uneven increment increases made
analysis more difficult in that you could no longer describe how a one unit increase in Bk
affects social happiness. For example the survey asked, How many hours each day do you
typically spend on social media (Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, etc.) The listed responses were
None, I don t use social media, 1 to 2, 2 to 4, 4 to 6, 6 or more. I corrected this particular issue by
recoding social media to grow by two hour increments. Based upon how I observe my own peers
relationship with social media, I predicted a negative relationship with social happiness. The added
dictionary definition of FOMO also gives validity to this claim.
Other variables also suffered from irregular increments of

Becoming A Litigation Lawyer
To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.
People often get dreams mixed up with goals. Maybe it s because they don t know the difference
or because it s easier to imagine than it is to do. Something that you can close your eyes and
picture it happening simply because we don t wantto put in the time and effort it takes to
accomplish these so called goals . Sure, you can start off with a dream, but you can t stop there.
Eventually those dreams you have needto become plans, and just like that those plans convert to
goals and if you want it bad enough you can have it. My ultimate goal, the one above all the rest, is
to become a litigation lawyer.
My immediate family consists of my six siblings and I plus both of my parents. We are African
American and our family is strongly based on religion. One thing I believe is super important in
general is helping others whether it be something as little as opening the door or even waving to
the guy across the street. Giving back to others because they did something for you or because you
just felt like it, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well it s exactly the same when you want to achieve a goal, you need to have a structured plan
that you re going to act upon. For instance I want a 3.5 4.0 GPA so , my action plan to achieve
this is to study hard, come in for tutoring when I need it, and asking questions when i m
confused. The University of Pennsylvania is a beautiful school, but unfortunately I would have
to go to college before law school so I will need to complete college and then transfer there. Back to
my ultimate goal which is to become a litigation lawyer. In order to become a licensed litigation
lawyer, I will need to earn a bachelor s degree in law, meet or pass the state bar exam. The last thing
I need to become a lawyer is to work on my written and oral communication

The Core Elements Of The Registered Pension Plan
Individual Pension Plan Background As a baseline to understanding an IPP, it is critical to
establish some of the core elements of the registered pension plan (RPP) regime. AN IPP is
essentially a defined benefit pension plan (DB) setup by an employer with a limited number of
designated beneficiaries (e.g. directors and officers) or possibly, a single beneficiary (owner
manager). It requires registration with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with ongoing maintenance
and compliance in accordance with the Act. Failure to comply with rules set forth in the ITA
could result in revocation or deregistration, which consequently could lead to unfavorable tax
consequences. The plan must be sponsored and funded by a corporation with funding possibly
also coming from employees. In general, DB plans offer employees specific future pension
benefits upon retirement, typically calculated on the basis of a percentage of their employment
income over their service period. IPP subscribers have additional confidence in knowing that their
post employment benefits will be fixed in value each year which eliminates the uncertainty and
concerns raised with retirement investments premised on the performance of capital markets.
Pension plans are in the purview of either provincial or federal legislation; however, the scope of
this discussion is confined to the Act. Perhaps the most attractive feature of an IPP is that for the
right individual(s), it is a more effective tax planning vehicle by

Annotated Bibliography On Color Barcode
II.LTERATURE REVIEW
1)Homayoun Bagherinia, Roberto Manduchi, had proposed the for University of California, Santa
Cruz A novel approach for color barcode decoding using smartphones
The use of colors increases the information storage capacities in barcodes. Increasing the number
of color stolen code information makes the decoding a challenging task due to the dependency of
the surface color on the illuminant spectrum, viewing parameters, printing device and material.
The decoding becomes more challenging if a mobile phone as a decoding device is used due to
the capture of image from different distances as well as angles. We present an iterative decoding
algorithm that decodes the colors of all barcode patches across the barcode by ... Show more content

for Barcode Modulation Method for Data Transmission in Mobile Devices In this study, a new
approach for data modulation in 2 D barcodes is introduced, and its performance is evaluated in
comparison to other standard method of barcode modulation. In this new approach, orthogonal
frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation is used together with differential phase shift
keying (DPSK) over adjacent frequency domain elements. A specific aim of this study is to
establish a system that is proven tolerant to camera movements, picture blur, and light leakage
within neighboring pixels of an LCD.
III. THE PROPOSED PICODE SYSTEM In this section, the proposed PiCode system is described
with an emphasis on the novel aspects of the image modulation and demodulation process. For the
modulation part the details of the modulation scheme will be presented to illustrate how PiCode
preserves the perceptual quality of the embedded image while minimizing the interference of the
latter incurred on the modulation waveform. For the modulation part, the algorithms for performing
discrete cosine transform, block division will be described.

Determining the Prices of Products
With the coming of the global marketplace on the Internet, would Uniform Global price become a

Introduction:
What is the Price of a product? How is the price of a product determined? Why is the price of an

Pricing is one of the key functions of the finance as well a marketing department of any company
whether it is a manufacturing concern or a service provider. On one hand, the finance department

During the initial years of e commerce, many predicted that the internet would lead to a
frictionless economy with lower search costs and availability of better information over the
internet. Generally people feel that if a product is purchased online, they would be in a position
to take advantage of the fixed price displayed online which would in most cases be lower than the
retail prices in the customer s country. However, the headline price displayed is not always depict
the full cost of purchasing that product as the hidden costs are not mentioned. Hidden costs may be
shipping charges (postage and packing), tax liable on purchase.
Several efforts have been made to standardize the way prices are display and online shopping
websites have been very helpful in providing comprehensive details about the cost of products sold
online. Inspite of such efforts made, there are still some unresolved issues concerning the local
taxes which differ from country to country.
Ethnocentric pricing policy
According to this pricing policy the prices are set uniform across the world and the importer
absorbs fright and import duties. This is the simplest of all as no knowledge of the competitors
prices and market is required but the disadvantage of such pricing policy is pricing does not
respond to the market conditions of each national market thus it does not help to maximize the

Indentured Servants In America
Indentured servants were people who came over to the southern colonies in America from Britain
were bound to a contract to work off their debt overseas. The women who came over as indentured
servants were often convicted of crimes back in England or came from poor families, either way
these women hoped to create a new life for themselves after working off their debts. A large portion,
about three fourths of the women who came over from Britain to the Southern Colonies during the
seventeenth century, were indentured servants (Dubois, ch.2 p.51).
Most women who decided to travel to the new world as an indentured servant knew there would
probably never be a return trip home, but at the time it might have seemed like a small price to pay

Typically marriages were cut short due to the death of a spouse usually an older husband
(Dubois, ch.2 p.48). After a woman was widowed [and if she survived her childbearing years],
she would receive a dowry of at least a third of her husband s property (Dubois, ch.2 p.50). There
were two options for widowed women at this point, the most population option was to get
remarried, the other option was to become a feme sole, having this status gave the women some
individual rights before law (Dubois). The women who obtained the status of feme sole and
exercised their rights could manage their small landholdings, make contracts, and appear in court to
reclaim debts as seen through the works of Margret Brent (Dubois, ch.2

Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws Essay
Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws
The film Jaws has been directed and produced in 1975 by Steven Spielberg. It is about a police
chief that has been assigned to a hot resort on one of New England Coast s beaches. His job is to
make sure that the killer shark, which has already eaten a person in this area, does not have a
chance to attack again.
The film is set on the 4th of July because it is a national holiday in America The Independence
Day. Lots of people organise picnics, go for holidays etc. The New England Coast is an attraction
to tourists and many people visit it during their holidays. In the film the protagonist is chief Brody

After the attack and the disturbing music the dead silence came. This is to highlight the fact that
the girl has been killed in a very brutal and painful way and that nobody could help her, even if they
wanted to. It also tells the audience that the shark is creepy, awful and unstoppable. This shark
characterisation helped the director to build tension more effectively before the future attacks.
Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness
of the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is
about to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not
survive as previous victims had not survived.
In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the
audience. The scene began with a straight, long shot of a 10 year old boy, Alex, going to his
mother to ask for more time in the water. The straight shot was used to show equality, to make the
audience feel as they are in the same place with all tourists on the beach. This did not build any
tension because nothing was going to happen at that point. The audience might wonder why so
much time is spent with Alex, why we are continously focused on him, not on any of the other boys
this starts to build

The Use Of Symbolism In Macbeth
Clothes makes the man... or so they say. William Shakespeare uses many literary devices to
emphasize important recurring ideas in his plays. One of the techniques Shakespeare uses to
illustrate internal conflict is the use of imagery, which allows the audience grasp his intentions
through unique representations. The usage of such figurative language inspires an understanding
of the plot at a deeper level, as well as to serve specific purposes. One of the most important types
of imagery employed in Shakespeare s play Macbethis the motif of clothing, which is used to
symbolize power and conceal evil deeds.
The use of clothing in the play is crucial in emphasizing the positions of power in Scotland, as
well as how that power suits the person who wields it. At the beginning of Act One, when Ross
delivers Macbeth the news that Macbeth is now the Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth questions him by
asking Why do you dress me / In borrowed robes? (1.3.114 115). The robes Macbeth mentions
refer to the new title and power he has been granted, which he doesn t think belongs to him. Banquo
notes of Macbeth s uncertainty in his new titles, and assures Macbeth that like our strange
garments, cleave not to their mold / But with the aid of use (1.4.160 162). Banquo reasons that the
longer Macbeth has the title, the more familiar and better fitting the role would suit him. However,
Banquo s claims does not seem to come true, as the clothing Macbeth wears continues to be ill
fitting. Another

Analysis Of How Children Succeed
Most people subscribe to the belief that Paul Tough refers to the cognitive hypothesis that suggests
that success depends primarily on cognitive skills. They argue that intelligence is measured based
on IQ tests which include the ability to recognize letters, words, detect patterns, and calculate. They
say that the simplest way to acquire and develop skills is through practicing them continuously.
Children should also begin practicing as early as possible to nurture skills. However, in the book
titled How Children Succeed, Tough introduces the character hypothesis which explains that non
cognitive skills such as self control, curiosity, self confidence, conscientiousness, and grit are crucial
to achieving success than sheer brainpower or cognitive skills (Tough 49). To justify his argument,
he uses research findings from psychologists and neuroscientists. They say that character is
developed by encountering with failure and overcoming it. The hidden power of character explains
why some children perform well while others fail. However, I say that linking grit and character is
pervasive and unfair to kids from poor backgrounds; particularly when the author states that
academic proficiency is not a determinant of future success. The big point on Tough s main
arguments is that children succeed with character and not test scores. In his previous writings,
Tough mentioned that grit is the component that was missing in education. He recounts two
educators; Dominic Randolph and

The Effects of Malpractice in the Healthcare Field in...
The Effects of Malpractice in the Healthcare Field in Today s Society. The real costs of medical
malpractice have little to do with litigation but the lost lives, extra medical expenses, time out of
work, and pain and suffering of tens of thousands of people every year (Baker 1). The effects of
malpractice in the health care field are a major issue in today s society. Working on a more
profitable and safe way to ensure the prevention of malpractice is what should be worked on to
promote a safe and comfortable environment for the people. There are many errors that malpractice

United States medical physicians perform the wrong procedure on a patient at least twenty
times a week. They performed on the wrong body part at least twenty times a week (Walker 1).
Inform consent from the patient is by far a concern that healthcare workers are liable for if they
are to operate or continue any medical examination without the patient permission. If the patient
does not give informed consent to a medical procedure, the doctor or health care provider may be
liable if the procedure result in harm or injury, even if it was carried out flawlessly. Cases on
malpractice go up every year, some are rewarding and some are failures. Several years ago a
patient woke up from surgery and asked her surgeon, Why is he bandage on my left ankle
instead of my right (Levy 1)? The doctor realized e operated on the wrong ankle and
immediately reported the error to the higher authority in the hospital (Levy 1). During the cases
the doctor wasn t punished for his mistake because the people thought he had suffered enough
disgrace on knowing he made a mistake as a healthcare provider (Levy 1). People in the medical
field are well intentioned and feel distress when they harm patients. Let s reserve punishment for
clear cares of negligence. Other error should be used to reinforce a learning environment in which
we are hard on problems rather than hard on the people (Levy 1). Two former patients of John

The Diversity Of The Natural Ecosystem
1.0INTRODUCTION
Nigeria is placed between latitudes 4 0 16IN and 130 52IN and between Longitudes 20 49IE and
14037IE. The land covers a add soil area of 923, 768 km2 with a population of 140,431,790 in
2006 (NPC, 2009). Due to its gigantic geographical extent, the country covers diverse climatic and
ecological zones. The diversity of the natural ecosystem ranges from semi arid port in the northern,
to rain forest and vast freshwater swamp forest with another different coastal vegetation in the
southwesterly. The land s heavy capableness of biodiversity let around 20,000 species of insects,
near 1000 species of birds, 247 species of mammals, 123 species of reptiles and most 1000 species
of fish. The land is also fortunate with near 7,895 species of plants (Federal Government of
Nigeria, 2001).
Nigeria s economy is characterized by vast rural based conventional sector with almost 70% of the
assemblage lives on agriculture guiding to legal felling, infringements by farmers and cattle
herders, firewood collectors and illicit procurement of shielded wildlife. Fast growth and high
measure of poorness (Omonoma, 2009), has led to burden on water, land and other natural resources

The Differences Of Shinto And Nordic Religions
Since the beginning of mankind, every society has looked to religion to give meaning to life. From
a good harvest, to understanding the purpose of our existence; the belief in the divine provides a
platform on which many people can develop answers to universal questions. Through the Shinto
and Nordic religions, communities have been able to connect to the divine through their traditions,
experiencing their spirituality through worshipping a deity, engaging in festivals and even
undertaking pilgrimages. Although their distinctive cultures result in differing religious practices
for the Japanese and Norse societies, both strive to make sense of our world, and seek the meaning
to human existence.
Shintoism is the native religion of Japan, however, unlike most other religions; it claims no sacred
text or founder. Because of this, Shintoism is more commonly referred to as a reflection of
Japanese culture and history, often blending with other religions, such as Buddhism (O Neal et al.,
2007). Being an immanent religion, Shinto values the importance of experiencing harmony with the
spirits of the world, known as the kami. These kami inhabit all things, from animals and mountains,
to the spirits of the deceased (Toropov and Buckles, 2011). Although not considered all powerful,
the chief kami of this animistic spirituality is the sun goddess, Amaterasu. As the daughter of
Izanagi and Izanami, the creators of Japan, her role is to rule over the heavens, and provide the

  • 2. How Is Offred Presented In The Handmaid s Tale Offred Offred is the protagonist and narrator of the The Handmaid s Tale . As one of the rare fertile women in this dystopian world, she is put at the bottom of the social hierarchy as a Handmaid, where her sole purpose is to provide children for the Commander and his Wife. Despite being the protagonist, Offred is a passive character who generally conforms to the social stereotypes in Gilead due to her cowardice. Despite this, there are some moments where the reader is able to acknowledge the degree of power she holds within this society. According to critic Coral Ann Howells, those at the bottom don t have power , yet Carol L. Beran argues that they have some kind of special power , and indeed, Offred is not completely powerless in Gileadean society. All women in Gilead have a modicum of power, and Offred is no exception. She gains her power through her biology and sexuality, because men in Gilead are not allowed a woman until they become an Angel, a high position in the social hierarchy. Offred s power is often hidden or oppressed by the system the Sons of Jacob have created. This is seen when Offred says doubled, I walk down the street (Atwood) when recounting the experience of shopping with her partner, Ofglen. Here, Offred is literally doubled due to Ofglen walking alongside her in identical clothing, which could suggest the lack of power due to the loss of identity. This also illustrates how the Sons of Jacob attempt women from using their power by using them as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Egypt And Inca Similarities Amanda Heatwole Dr. Julie Smith HS 101.01 September 3, 2015 Egyptian and Incas Comparison Egyptians and Incas may be two different cultures on opposite sides of the world, but every civilization also has similarities amongst its characteristics. Both the Egyptians and Incas had various types of tools they created and/or used as well as their own methods of communication. Both Egyptians and Incas used a variety of tools for multiple purposes. The Egyptians crafted hoes, sickles, scoops, and baskets for agricultural use. Plows lead by either oxen or people were also used for their crops. Aqueducts were created to store water from the Nile River for various uses. Bronze, iron and copper were utilized in handcrafting axe heads, knives,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Nile River acted as a highway for the Egyptians, while the Incas actually constructed their own roads and highways to areas of importance. Egyptian beliefs were communicated by word of mouth before writing became established. As writing developed, inscriptions of hieroglyphics were used to communicate religious texts into walls of buildings such as tombs for the noblemen and kings. Political texts were inscribed on stone or written on papyrus using hieroglyphics. Hieratic was developed to communicate more quickly throughout daily life and was taught throughout Egyptian schools. Like the Egyptians, Incas had their own language, though it was only a spoken one known as Quechua. If a message needed sent, the Incas would send a runner to relay the message. Incas created a khipus (a cord with strings hanging from it, some with knots in them). The knots in the khipus were used to record and track census data such as financial debts or labor obligations, as well as other statistical records. The Incas did not have a writing system like the Egyptians, but they utilized their natural resources to create a system of tracking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of The Precession Of Simulacra Introduction Lee Harvey Oswald. The name may conjure up specific memories of a living, breathing man for those who knew him; but, for the general public, Lee Harvey Oswald was and will always be a scarecrow of patched together media images and texts. This is due to the fact that our only access to Oswald is through texts. To quote Lentricchia, Oswald is a person of, by, and for the image (2). Image, here, can be understood as any textual representation of Oswald. In Libra, DeLillo goes even further by portraying the living Oswald as a fragmented figure whose identity is already a pastiche of texts and images that he has consumed. In his landmark essay, The Precession of Simulacra, Baudrillard warns that [s]imulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being, or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal (par. 1). Through his consumption of texts, Oswald constructs an identity without substance or reality: a hyperreal identity. Baudrillard cites a Borges tale about a ruler who commissions a map the same size as his territory. After the empire falls, the remnants of the map are still rotting away in the deserts. He believes that this story is helpful in describing what he means by the precession of simulacra, and he alters the story, saying, The territory no longer precedes the map, nor does it survive it. It is the real, and not the map, whose vestiges persist here and there in the deserts (par. 1). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Rejection-Abuse Cycle Psychology Domestic abuse often follows a certain pattern and that pattern is an infinite vicious cycle. There are two types of abuse cycle. The name given for the first one this merciless cycle is The Rejection Abuse Cycle (Brown, James, Taylor, 2010, p.280 307), which can be related to social norms. The pattern is separated into four steps; (1) rejection, (2) threat to self, (3) defence against threat, (4) abuse. Rejection happens when the man becomes aware of his partner is rejecting him. Therefore, it triggers the man s previous experience of being rejected. After feeling rejected, the man will sense a threat to his ego, evoking shame because social norms does not allow men to be rejected by a woman (threat against self). To protect... • 9. Walt Disney s Perseverance And Imagination The Magic of Disney can be attributed to Walt Disney s perseverance and imagination. Swearing to never create another character he didn t have the license to, he created an animation studio in Kansas, which went bankrupt shortly after. After moving to California, he set up shop and started Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. One of the first real successes of the studio is a short in 1982 called Steamboat Willie, by Les Clark, which introduced the character later known as Mickey Mouseand was the first time audiences experienced synchronized sound (TL). Walt s death in 1966 left the Empire in uncharted territory as the company had to learn how to fend for itself or did with Walt and Nine Truly Old Men. They needed new talent and skilled animators, and Eric Larson was the man for the job (W9OM). In death Walt left $80 million behind, $38 million (47.5%) went to the founding and funding of an animation program in Chouinard Art Institute, CalArts, room A113 (VF) (Quora). This class reaped the benefits of Disney s monopoly on the animation industry and trained the next generation of animators in the Disney way. This was originally Walt s goal and he was close to starting class. However, he was inconveniently side tracked by dying and project was put on hold till Larson adopted it. Students of this class include Tim Burton, Brad Bird, Glen Keane, Nancy Beiman and many more, working on projects like The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, Cars, and The Incredibles. The United States is faced with the problem of what should be done with the excess of stray animals. This is a complex thing to solve, but that doesn t mean killing the animals for space is right. Stray dogs and cats have just as much right to a good home as pets that already have owners. They represent a rage of shelters from all over the country that won t euthanize any animal on their property. No Kill shelters are gaining popularity in the United States, According to one source, More than 600 shelters and that s just a fraction. The popularity has put pressure on the other shelters to become no kill (Fasseas). • 12. Slavery Impact On Roman Economy The impact of Slavery on the Roman Economy I will split the economic impact of slave labor into the three major sectors often used by modern economists (National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.). 1. Primary economies involve raw materials produced by farming, mining, logging, etc. 2. Secondary economy involves manufacturing of goods such as pottery, tools, and sundry goods. 3. Tertiary economy involves trade, and sales of goods. Less indirect impacts such as the centralization of wealth, and the suppression of offshoot economies, and the economic impacts on subgroups will also be discussed. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When most of the workers are slaves with little disposable income, there is little net benefit to the local economy. An additional factor is that newer and smaller companies usually employ more people (National Bureau of Economic Research, n.d.). Unfortunately, with the centralization of wealth and power small farms and businesses were often suppressed or gobbled up by the wealthy. Summary The slave economy helped increase the inflow of wealth to Rome filling it s coffers and benefiting the wealthy nobility which grew up to take advantage of it. It was the strength of this economy, which helped Rome achieve Greatness. This however, came at a cost since that wealth was unevenly distributed and used to suppress competition from the less wealthy. In addition, a significant portion of the population was pushed into poverty resulting in a welfare state. Thus resulting in a drain on the public coffers and the loss of productivity these people would normally have provided. I leave this discussion with a final thought. Rome was full of creative thinkers, architects, and engineers. If Rome had managed to wean itself off of cheap slave labor, would solutions to rising labor costs goaded them into the creation of an industrial revolution, 1500 years in advanced to our ... From the kinds of drugs used to their potencies to how much is used, there are multiple factors to observe. Some drugs that didn t even exist or were almost unheard of that long ago are some of the most abused today and are growing in popularity. In this essay I will be analyzing how people use drugs differently today than they did 20 years ago, in 1997, as opposed to how it is used today in 2017. In addition to this, we will be looking at how this change is affecting society and whether or not we re better off than we were in the late 1990s. Thanks to several anti tobacco campaigns and similar agendas, tobacco use amongst Americans is declining by quite a bit, and even more rapidly with teens. To conclude, in 2017 thanks to the efforts of government sponsored campaigns tobacco and alcohol abuse has decreased dramatically since the 1990s, however newer and more powerful drugs like methamphetamine and synthesized marijuana have gained in popularity over the course of 20 years, and other drugs including opioids and heroin the like have grown to become the most dangerous and most used today. Now we will observe the change in drug abuse from a direct source. When asked if drugs use has increased or decreased since 1997, both of my subjects agreed it had increased. When I asked what drugs in particular were more popular, the interviewed went along with the research and said meth, as well as opioids like heroin. • 14. Essay about The Roman Military Reforms institued by Gaius... The hypothesis of this report is that the military reforms instituted by Gaius Marius ultimately paved the way for the fall of the Roman Republic. The reforms instituted by Marius were designed as a way to strengthen the Republic by professionalizing the Roman military, but instead resulted in long term political consequences that contributed to the decline of the Republic and the creation of the Empire. In this report, the decline of the republic specifically refers to the loss of the Senate s authority over Rome s generals. From 112 106 BC, a Numidian king called Jurgurtha was engaged in a war with Rome due to an attempt to seize power from his half brother, Adherbal. The Romans arrived due to the request of Adherbal, and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As many of these new recruits did not fit in these categories, and were unable to provide their own equipment, Marius arranged for the State to supply them with arms and armour. He then offered the masses a permanent career as professional soldiers, and the opportunity to gain spoils on the campaign. With little hope of gaining status in other ways, the masses flocked to join Marius. The cause of this reform was largely due to recurring recruitment problems faced by the Roman republic, as most soldiers were expected to return to their farms after long campaigns, but since the campaigns were becoming increasingly longer due to the distance of the conflicts from rome, the farms were left deserted and ruined do to prolonged absence of workers. As such, the returning soldiers found themselves without property making them illegible for military service, thus weakening the army. (William G. Sinnigen) As such, Marius believed these deficiencies in the Roman army recruitment system needed urgent attention, and his solution was to offer those with nothing the ability to have everything. Along with the new recruitment system, Marius also improved and enhanced the military training by basing it upon those used and developed by gladiators and also abolished the three different types of soldiers, each armed and positioned by rank and experience, with cohorts of men universally armed and created the use of the eagle as the standard for ... Realism, rooted in the experience of World War II and the Cold War, is said to be undergoing a crisis of confidence largely because the lessons adduced do not convincingly apply directly to the new realities of international relationsin the twenty first century (Clinton 2007:1) Worse still, if policymakers steadfastly adhere to realist precepts, they will have to navigate the unchartered seas of the post Cold Wardisorder with a Cold War cartography, and blind devotion to realismcould compromise their ability to prescribe paths to a more orderly and just system. Realist ideology, statism, specifically, suggests that survival and sovereignty of the state is its primary goals, and the very condition of its existence. With this said, states do have the ability to take care of other actors interests and needs in the international community out of something that could be called a moral responsibility , but only if it somehow serves its own national interests in the process. Morgenthau (1949) explains that state actors who pursue certain national interests and act aggressively resort to liberal sentiment, as a convenient means of justifying their behaviour in the eyes of both the international community, and their own people. This is not to say however, that some states are sincere in certain good hearted pursuits. But it is indeed true that moral principles prove to be serviceable to national interest (Morgenthau 1949:207). Machiavelli goes so far as to claim that morality is the product of power (Carr 2001:63). Take for example the nineteenth century, in which the British Empire was the global hegemon at the time. Qualitative data from ERP adoption projects and consultants working with ERP implementations have been collected. Such decisions address the dilemma that all ERP adopters continuously face during the implementation: whether to change the business process to п¬Ѓt the ERP system or whether to change the ERP system to п¬Ѓt the business process. To minimize customization, the decision to change the ERP system should only be made in rare circumstances, e.g., when a business process cannot be changed without losing a competitive advantage. Furthermore, such decisions require cooperation between the information technology (IT) and the operational departments, following formal deп¬Ѓned activities, which are part of a change management process. Thus, change management is instrumental to ERP implementation. In fact, it was listed as one of the top п¬Ѓve factors in a study of chief information ofп¬Ѓcer (CIO) perceptions of critical success factors for ERP projects [17]. The analysis of two implementation cases [7] conп¬Ѓrms this notion as it identiп¬Ѓes change management as one of the major success factors. • 26. The Origins Of The Origin Of Mathematics The Origins of Mathematics The Origins When and where is the origins of mathematics? The origins of mathematics accompanied the evolution of social systems in many ways. The social development of any society requires some sort of calculation and number system. In the same way, the arithmetic operations are essential for the development and interaction between people. Words that describe numbers and operations that enable calculations are the basis for survival. The need to count how many animals where available for hunting, and the number of people that needed to be feed are just examples of the needs faced by a pre historic man. All this require the need to develop words, sounds, or gestures that could be used to describe the numbers of objects and animals, also they had to develop a type of a counting system that could have allowed them to make the most basic mathematical operations, for example equal sharing of food. That can explain why the need of mathematics was so important just from the beginning of times, and how it has been the binding element that kept the early humans together and help them to coexist and develop into what we are today. Since the invention of a numbers and counting systems occurred when people started to live together and formed the first human society, mathematical scenes was the link that helped them to for societies and to develop a type of communication system and in a way help them to establish the first trading system which in turn, ... From the point of view of Berrman (1975), polyandry does not have a same manner in all societies and the basis, function, costs and consequences of polyandry must be studied individually in each society (Goldstein, 1981). In these societies, large families are disadvantageous as they would only increase consumption without having any changes in production levels. Due to custom and the legal structure, Tibet s land was controlled by the landed aristocracy, the government, or the church. Peasants paid at least two thirds of the annual farm produce in rent. There was no gain in expanding the land and increasing production since almost all the surplus was paid as rent or taxes. With land being a rare commodity, the population did however benefit in continuity of tenancy from one generation to the next, securing their right to occupy the land (Lee,1982). After her breakout in 1956, Dalida s breathtaking beauty and distinctive voice made her an instant star, which gave her all the riches and spoils one could hope for, but amplified her vulnerabilites and weaknesses which fame and success exploited. Directed by Liza Azuelos (LOL), the film tells the singer s story in a non linear way, beginning with her lying to her brother in a French airport in 1967, then secretly heading to a Parisian hotel. Introduction Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the human face. The cognitive and neural processes in face recognition differ greatly from those observed for object recognition. Both objects and faces are generally considered to be viewpoint dependent meaning that performance in recognition is better when viewed from a familiar viewpoint. However when considering Biederman s (1987) recognition by components theory he found that objects can be recognised equally as easily from all viewpoints. However Tarr and BГјlthoff (1995) found that when giving participants novel objects to recognise and extensive practice at viewing the objects from a specified viewpoint that performance in object recognition was better from familiar viewpoints than unfamiliar ones, which does not support Biedermans viewpoint invariant theory. This result demonstrates viewpoint dependent where by object recognition is slower and less accurate when viewed from different perspectives, this can be compared to the importance of the inversion effect in face recognition where by faces are less accurately recognised when viewed upside down. This also requires us to identify the importance of expertise for both object recognition and face recognition. Yin (1969) stated that individuals have a greater expertise at individuating faces. The expertise hypothesis proposes that special visual processing for faces is due to humans having expertise at individuating faces. Evidently humans are surrounded by faces from an early age and there is some evidence suggesting that from birth, babies have a mechanism which facilitates holistic processing of faces faster and more accurately (Nelson, 2001). So, just as recognition of snakes and dangerous animals is innately hard wired to generate a fear response, the same hard wired responses to faces may also be innate in order to ... • 41. The Core Elements Of The Registered Pension Plan Individual Pension Plan Background As a baseline to understanding an IPP, it is critical to establish some of the core elements of the registered pension plan (RPP) regime. AN IPP is essentially a defined benefit pension plan (DB) setup by an employer with a limited number of designated beneficiaries (e.g. directors and officers) or possibly, a single beneficiary (owner manager). It requires registration with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with ongoing maintenance and compliance in accordance with the Act. Failure to comply with rules set forth in the ITA could result in revocation or deregistration, which consequently could lead to unfavorable tax consequences. The plan must be sponsored and funded by a corporation with funding possibly also coming from employees. In general, DB plans offer employees specific future pension benefits upon retirement, typically calculated on the basis of a percentage of their employment income over their service period. IPP subscribers have additional confidence in knowing that their post employment benefits will be fixed in value each year which eliminates the uncertainty and concerns raised with retirement investments premised on the performance of capital markets. Pension plans are in the purview of either provincial or federal legislation; however, the scope of this discussion is confined to the Act. Perhaps the most attractive feature of an IPP is that for the right individual(s), it is a more effective tax planning vehicle by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They argue that intelligence is measured based on IQ tests which include the ability to recognize letters, words, detect patterns, and calculate. They say that the simplest way to acquire and develop skills is through practicing them continuously. Children should also begin practicing as early as possible to nurture skills. However, in the book titled How Children Succeed, Tough introduces the character hypothesis which explains that non cognitive skills such as self control, curiosity, self confidence, conscientiousness, and grit are crucial to achieving success than sheer brainpower or cognitive skills (Tough 49). To justify his argument, he uses research findings from psychologists and neuroscientists. They say that character is developed by encountering with failure and overcoming it. The hidden power of character explains why some children perform well while others fail. However, I say that linking grit and character is pervasive and unfair to kids from poor backgrounds; particularly when the author states that academic proficiency is not a determinant of future success. The big point on Tough s main arguments is that children succeed with character and not test scores.
