A Critical Analysis of What I Have Learned from Debate
Why is is that athlete constantly put themselves through excruciating pain just or game that will
not matter in a year? Why do they continuously push themselves harder and harder just to be on
the starting line up? Both of these questions can be answered by one simple phrase: winning is
everything. Athletes struggle and fight to be the best just so they can prove that they are stronger,
faster, and ultimately better than their opponents. Winning gives one a rush that he or she cannot
feel in any other way. For me, this feeling does not come from scoring a goal or making a
touchdown or serving an ace. This feeling of pride and confidence comes from winning a debate
meet. Debate has become a part of my life that has taught me an abundance of valuable lessons. For
example, debate has taught me the importance of time management, how crucial it is to be reliable,
and what hard work can get you.
Being on the Worland Speech and Debate team, I have had to learn to balance my time between
multiple activities. Debate is the longest season compared to any sport at Worland High School
because it starts in November and end in the middle of March. Throughout the season, it is vital
that I balance my school work, my daily chores, the objectives I have at work, while also making
time for practice. Practice generally starts at four o clock in the afternoon, and gets over no later
than seven o clock that night. Our practice run very long and it can get quite difficult to fit in
homework, chores, and other tasks I have to accomplish for each day. Over the past three years,
however, I have become quite the expert in great time managing skills. I use every spare minute
before school, at the end of classes, during lunch, on bus trips, etc. to get ahead on any work I
can. I do not hang out with my friends as much or go to any sporting events just so I can make
sure I am not behind on my work for the day. Because of my passion for debate, I am now able to
use the time I have to the best advantage.

For the past few weeks I have been sorting through the collection of postcards. I selected the ones
that had to with people on the street of India. I find it interesting that this collection has large
potion of people represented from lower classes. My curiosity also orientates around the way in
which India was being portrayed to the West. I am currently taking notes on what literally
shown in each postcard as well as a list of questions that I associate with them. The questions will
be the base for what I research for the postcards and the questions I can most readily answer or

I am going to evaluate the scholarly paper that Northern Kentucky s own professor Jonathan S.
Cullick has written about the book called The Turner Diaries written by William Luther Pierce.
To summaries Cullick s written work. He has a complaint about this book being called a work of
fiction, not because it is a super racist and anti government book, but he is saying that the book
cannot be called fiction, because the main character or the narrator voice in the book is not truly a
character. Cullick talks about how this fictional novel went to court because it was more like a
blueprint for terroristic acts such as the Oklahoma City Bombing. In this piece I think Cullick is

I feel sympathetic for the creature on many occasions in the fiction novel Frankenstein by Mary
Shelley. Frankenstein has brought something to life that he cannot even look at without being
horrified. I believe it was wrong that Frankenstein played God and created something he didn t

On the Genealogy of Morals by Friedrich Nietzsche is typically listed as one of the most
important philosophical works of the modern era. It is only modern, of course, to philosophical
standards, being a mere 129 years old. It is also one of the most controversial works of its time,
having the dubious distinction of being connected to Nazi ideology; it also has a not very subtle
racist, sexist, and Darwinist bent that is a reflection of Nietzsche himself. That being said, I think
that it is also serially misunderstood. Nietzsche directly mentions the role of interpretation in ethical
discourse in the Genealogy, and the interpretive element factors heavily into one s understanding of
the polemic and by extension, ethics philosophy as a whole. Throughout the book, Nietzsche uses
interpretation as a tool in itself to make a constructivist and existentialist argument about the history
of ethics as whole. His idea that man has used interpretation throughout history, and the interpretive
elements in Genealogy outside of the historical analysis, seem to say that almost all ethics are
derived from interpretation and therefore constructivist in nature, which is a heavily existentialist

In the Republic, Plato proposes the complete censorship of imitative poetry from his ideal city,
arguing that it corrupts individuals souls and therefore has a negative effect on society, resulting in
injustice within the city. Although seemingly trivial at first, when considered within its proper
context, the censorship of imitative poetry from the city would result in severe consequences.
Throughout this essay I will discuss the political and psychological implications of its censorship,
and will also refute Plato s argument, showing how it lacks soundness: notably, through a
criticism of his epistemology. Regarding the political implications of the censorship of poetry, I
will draw from the ideas of Karl Popper, who argued Plato to be one of the most influential
philosophers on the emergence of totalitarian regimes in the 20th century, laying the foundations for
their very existence (K. Popper, 1945). I will also show how poets themselves have an important
political role within cities, in that they enable the general population to hold the state accountable
for their actions. To discuss the psychological implications of poetry s censorship, I will compare
the contrasting views of Plato and Aristotleregarding its effect on the soul, whereby Aristotle claims
that poetry actually has beneficial, cathartic effects. Following these criticisms, it will become
apparent that Plato s proposed ban of imitative poetry is indefensible.
