Explain The Economic Logic Underpinning Mahan’S Theory
Explain the Economic Logic Underpinning Mahan s Theory of Sea Power
Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan published The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660 1783 in
1890, in which he attempted to analyze the role of sea control throughout history. Mahan, a naval
officer, used his sea experience to create a theory about naval history that is unlike any other
history work. Upon examination of Theodore Momsen s History of the Roman Empire, which
included the history of the Second Punic War, Mahan emphasized the significant role that sea
communications played in Rome s victory. Additionally, he describes the relevance of different
maritime campaigns in various battles that took place during the French and American revolutions.

Mahan devotes most of his introduction to the history of sea power. He starts by discussing how
the manner in which a war is fought changes as navies have evolved from galleys to steam ships as
well as the advancement of weapons, but that the principles behind maritime war remain the same.
In effort to illustrate the importance of sea power throughout history, Mahan details the impact that
sea power had on the second Punic War. The control of the water by the Romans forced Hannibal
to depart on the devastating venture through the Gaul. Instead of explaining the actual conflict at
hand, Mahan explores the strategy that would have been necessary to defeat Rome. The
Carthaginians would have needed to invade the Roman Empire in Italy either by sea or by
transport through the Gaul. Rome had control over any strategic location available to the
Carthaginians during the war and this was all made possible by the sea. Analyzing this war
specifically through the actions of the Roman Navy proves that the history of sea power is crucial
in understanding the history of the world. Mahan asserts his belief in the importance of learning
from history by stating, The battles of the past succeeded or failed according as they were fought
in conformity with the principles of war; and the seaman who carefully studies the causes of
success or failure will not only detect and gradually assimilate these principles, but will also inquire

They are increasingly aware that Social responsibility can be of direct economic value. Companies
can contribute to social and environmental objectives, through integrating Social responsibility as a

Evolution Of Flight Research Paper
Flight is a very complex function, and in order to develop into what we know now as birds,
there are several major evolutionary changes that needed to develop to maturity. In order for fly,
the skeletal structure, musculature, respiratory system, circulatory systems, and feathers must all
be adapted to allow for an organism to take flight. Many scientists have proposed theories about
the origin of flight, but the Arboreal and Cursorial theories have emerged as the strongest cases.
Arboreal theories are based around the idea that the organisms climbing into trees jump out of
those trees and glide down, eventually adapted to flap to increase drag. This theory is based in
the skeletal similarities of gliding animals to those of birds.1 This tree hopping evolution
hypothesis is supported by Archaeopteryx, one of the prime examples of a transitional animal for
flight. Archaeopteryx presents with long unfused claws that are adaptations for climbing and
grasping.3 In addition, there are also presence of a furcula, and a bid like pes with a reversed
hallux. These adaptations also account for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any lift that would come out of the winged features would generate drag causing a loss in
acceleration. 1 However, just as the Arobreal theory was supported by Archaeopteryx, the Cursorial
theory is also strongly supported by this specimen. Archaeopteryx demonstrates a complete set of
conical teeth and claws that were sharp and resembling the specimens relative Ornitholestes, a
known predaceous animal.3 The Archaeopteryx also resembles therapods with a reversed hallux,
hindlimb, and pelvis.3 Even though this theory is supported using fossil evidence, it does have
some problems which have lead to the development of theories such as the WAIR

Research Report On Data Collection
3.1INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the focus is on the methodology used in the study. It include the data collection, data
source, variables, research design, theoretical research framework, sampling design, test
consideration for data analysis, hypotheses statement and conclusion.
3.2DATA COLLECTION
Data collection involves the process of gathering information and data either from primary or
secondary data. In this study only secondary data is used.
3.2.1 Secondary Data
Secondary data refers to the statistical material which is obtained from someone else records.
Secondary data helped researcher s understanding so as to define problem, formulate research

The values can differ at various times for the same objects or person. The variables consist of
dependent and independent.
3.3.1 Dependent Variable
The dependent variable is denoted as variable of primary interest to the researcher as it provides a
measurement of the effect of the independent variables. In this research, foreign direct investment
(FDI) is the designated dependent variable where it indicates the outcome of the change brought
about by changes in the independent variables.
3.3.2 Independent Variables
Independent variables (predictor variables) are the ones that influence the dependent variable and
they explain the variance in dependent variable. In this research, gross domestic product (GDP),
interest rate (IR), exchange rate (ER), inflation rate (IFR), unemployment rate (UR), company tax
(CT) and labour cost (LC) are the independent variables that were used to

Silent Spring Review Paper
The concept of environment includes the junction of severe factors that directly or indirectly affects
the development and life of human beings, animals and all kind of natural resources. Milstein Stark
(2017) divides the field of environmental health into four categories that can be described as
biological, chemical, physical, and psychosocial factors. It means that how these factors interact
with an organism or with nature is directly correlated with the quality of life of a community or
population.
This summary is going to focus on chemical factors that are daily present in our lives and require
attention. The base of this assignment is a paper called Silent Spring Review (2002) that debates

The text explains about estrogen like compounds that can be found in products that we use daily,
as well as cosmetics, plastic, pesticides and detergents. Clearly, estrogens are essential for normal
human physiology but can have serious adverse effects if allowed to accumulate in the
environment and enter the human food chain (Adeel, Song, Wang Yand, 2017). A very important
information is that even a person that avoid contact with products potentially dangerous, can be
affected indirectly by another form of contamination. One of the examples of the Silent Spring
Review (2002) is when a house is built on a site of a former farm that used certain pesticides that
persist in soil for many years, even decades. There is an interesting worldwide distribution of
estrogens; the pattern of various types of estrogen may reflect sources of estrogens or specific
environmental characteristics of that part of the world (Adeel, Song, Wang Yand, 2017). Cosmetics
are also another category of products that deserve attention in this matter. The Silent Spring Review
(2002) talks about products that go from nail polish through hair care and that can carry hormones
that are endocrine disruptors and can also imbalance the hormone

Automatic Stroooding
The aim of this experiment was to test how the automatic processing of reading interferes with the
controlled processing of naming a colour. The findings support the original previous research
(Stroop, 1935) as a significant difference was found which indicates that when the controlled
process of naming a colour is not interfered with then it can be recognized faster whereas when the
automatic processes of reading words is involved then the time taken to name the colour is slower
due to the interference.
The results also support Teccee Happ, 1964, whose experiment used a different method of using
colour cards instead of non words but still helped to support their conclusions. They found that
participants responded faster with matching the colour with the colour cards as there was no
automatic process involved compared to the participants who had to match the colour ink of the
word to the colour card. This took the participants longer due to the interference of the automatic
process of reading which was what this experiment also found, further supporting the automatic
process interference theory.
The present research that was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

automaticity theory there would be interference in time taken to name the colours as the participant
would automatically read the word. However, it was found that the interference was heavily
reduced in the letter condition. They concluded that because the letter condition was an alternative
mindset they were able to ignore their typical mindset of reading the word. This leaves room for
discussion on what conditions would a person leave their typical mind set of reading a word to an
alternative mindset which could be explore

Consumerism And Consumerism
Consumerism is deeply embedded in our culture and heavily influences our day to day behavior
and interactions with others. Examples of consumerism include the fashion industry, our
obsession with getting the newest technology, and why we purchase a certain type of car. The
downside with our obsession of constant buying is that there are so many negative side effects
that impact the environment, worker s lives (working conditions, low wages, poor living
conditions) and our own relationships with our families, coworkers and friends. There is a lot
of evidence of these side effects, and yet we keep buying into this cycle. We should know better,
and yet it seems like it will be very hard to get us to change our habits. The works of Richard
Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, Phillip Bauman, Julia Pugh in, and Pierre Bourdieu in attempt to
explain why we continue to practice consumerist focused lifestyles. In The Spirit Level by
Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, their focus is on the relationship between consumerism
and climate change. Pickett and Wilkinson state that the inequality between classes in society
increases the cultural pressure to consume more and more, or to consume competitively. This is
because we are afraid of looking like we are second class or less than we are, and are afraid of
losing our place in society. In this way our obsessive buying habits have become a defense
mechanism against falling out of our hard earned place. As the inequality grows and the
distinctions between classes becomes ever clearer, we have to work harder in order to keep
buying and consuming to stay on top. Because we are spending more, we are saving less and
borrowing more, one statistic in the book states that, in 1998 even though the American
economy was booming...one family in sixty eight had filed for bankruptcy. (p. 227). In this way
consumerism becomes a vicious cycle that is incredibly hard to get out of because there are very
few other options. This is all because of how social we are, and how important it is to fit in with
those around us. In Liquid Life by Zygmunt Bauman, he explains our need for consumption
because of the way society progresses in what he calls a liquid modern society. He describes liquid

Differences Between The North And The South In The 1800s
During the early 19th century, especially before the American Revolution and after the War of
1812, American society has changed greatly. The North and the South followed different paths,
gradually developing into two distinct and very different regions. And in the 1800s, the
disparities between the two regions because of the difference in economic, social and political
structure, continued to widen leading up to the Civil War that raged across the nation from
1861 to 1865 which concluded the decades of diverse ideas and culture between the two regions.

An Analysis Of Richard s Abbey
Glimpses of monk societies are vastly present in Richard s (the chronicler) accounts of the Crusade
and through his intimate knowledge of monastic life. Richard s monastery at Winchester and
possibly others had access to ancient writers such as Ovid (3) and Vergil (12) to supplement their
works. This shows a possible increase in fascination for the Roman Empire and its literary works.
References to ancient authors and poets can be found throughout the chronicle when opportunities
present themselves. Though mostly talking about monks that follow the Rule of St. Benedict, he
begins by dedicating the chronicle to a former prior of the monastery who went to the Carthusian
order of monks (1). This can show that some monks changed not only their... Show more content on

society to focus on their works, only to have a small city or village be created around them. This
can show that the interaction between monks and laity was not as infrequent as some would
believe. This can also show that some monks were not ones to shy away from the occasional
gossip. To this he adds that the Carthusian monks (if they know of happenings outside of their
walls) are not following their rule of silence (2). Richard again critiques the Carthusians saying that
they cut ... [their] charity to strangers in half, by giving them a blessing without a meal (2). This
shows another difference between the two groups of monks and their attitudes towards the needy.
An interesting point to be made is that Richard says strangers not anyone . This can be taken to
mean that the poor of their village were given meals and blessings while travellers would only
receive a blessing without the meal. Another interesting point is that the monasteries were often

Compare And Contrast Avengers Vs Dc.
Over the years in the world of comics there has been a major rivalry between Marvel Studios and
DC. Both studios have put out amazing content and are the top in Superhero creation. However,
there s always the question of which one is better. There are two teams, Marvel s Avengers and
DC s Justice League. Each team has multiple members, and it s always been a debate on which
team would come out victorious. In a battle between the Avengers and the Justice League who
would win based on the heroes individual skills? In order to find out how a battle between the
two groups would happen we split the two teams into six different pairs. Each hero was pit
against someone who would have a similar skill set or power level as them. After the sets were
created, we then began to find out each character s individual skills. Assessing the strengths and
weaknesses of each hero against the other created a modest guess on who would win the battle.
This is based solely on the skills of each character and does not factor in battle areas or if the teams

Miller And Arthur Miller s The Crucible And The Red Scare
Are you now or were you ever? , this was the question asked at a time in American history when
everyone had a hard time trusting anyone. The topic being addressed here is how Miller s
statement is true. The statement shows the connection between Miller s book The Crucible and
The Red Scare, a situation during Millers time. The reason this is being brought to your attention
is because Miller s quote can still be applied to this day. This should be discussed so people can
prevent a similar situation like Salem or The Red Scare from happening again. The idea that
Miller is trying to convey to his audience is that at this day and age, including in the past, people
still struggle to face their own problems and rather succumb to their own paranoia. This
statement is true due to the fact that some people will lie at all cost to save themselves, people
in authoritative positions aren t always challenged when they should be, and people not realizing
that their paranoia can spread like a wildfire. As previously said, there are people who will lie at
all cost to save themselves from any consequences. In both situations of The Crucible and The
Red Scare whenever someone was given an either or option almost all the time they chose the
option that kept them out of trouble, with the exception of some people who did not confess. For
example, Miller explained it like this, Should the accused confess, his honesty could only be proved
by naming former confederates. (pg.5). The

The colours of images in the ad are dark, which represents the poverty in this child s life. The

filthiness of poverty. These dark colours, with the combination of the boy s bright shirt, makes the
ad stand out due to its boldness.
The picture of the child makes a strong statement. He is sitting on the ground with no belongings,
no food, and little clothing. His quality of life is poor. The image is depressingly eye catching. It is
hard to look away. The reader feels sorry for the boy and wants to find out how they can help.

The Pros And Cons Of Medical Ethics
Epistemological assumptions of health professionals vary according to writing situation (formal
vs informal). For example, Medical Ethics written by Dr. Roger Henderson provides a precise
model of conduct for the health provider to follow throughly. This formal work compiles a vast
amount of strict theory based knowledge in disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and medicine
. On the other hand, crossover texts such as Doctors of the Death Chamber written by Atul
Gawande detail the failure to uphold this medical standard that has been set and passed
throughout generations of medical practitioners. This type of informal work is made up of
mostly personal observation and experience from a medical professional on the job. Thus, by
having these comparisons, it is almost inevitable to compare anecdotal views of medical practice
to modern day procedures. This arises questions on whether this system has succeeded on
covering its ethical goals, or whether it has contradicted them from time to time. In addition to
this, if it has contradicted its ethical guidelines, on what occasions may this have occurred in
today s modern practices. While many correct paths can be taken on what can be done about this
issue, it also inevitably delves into the decisions that can be made by a medical practitioner in
order to avoid breaking ethical principles. Medical Ethicsprovides the principles that are required
for medical practice. These include respect for autonomy, non maleficence,

Barbara Ehrenreich Pros And Cons
Does the United States really support its citizens and allow them to prosper? In Barbara
Ehrenreich s book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America, Ehrenreich investigates
this question by living as a low wage worker for three months in cities around the United States.
Her experiences teach her that as her jobs change, so does her place in society. Nickel and
Dimed effectively proves American society does not support the poor; instead, it decreases low
wage workers mobilities and forces them to live lives that are focused only on their jobs.
Through her journey, Ehrenreich learns that because she works unskilled labor, her place in
society changes. The freedoms she has taken for granted while living in the upper middle class
have disappeared; her new $7 an hour paycheck severely limits where she can go and with whom
she interacts. Ehrenreich s entire world becomes about securing employment and earning enough
to survive. Where she lives determines where she works; while there may be cheaper housing in
the city, it is on the outskirts of town and far from any available work. As a whole, Ehrenreich s

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is emerging as a major challenge for the global health care
systems with increasing life expectancy and rising rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension
(1). Not surprisingly, the incidence rates of End stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) have been rising
world wide with rates ranging from 12 to 455 per million population (pmp) (1). ESKD affects 107
individuals per million population in the United Kingdom (2). Although the incidence rates have
been stable from 2006 2010, it has risen from 95pmp in 2001 (2). Prior to the 1960 s when dialysis
was available, ESKD was universally fatal. Since the advent of dialysis, ESKD was no longer a
terminal condition. With evolving technologies and modifications of the techniques, dialysis
developed into a long term treatment for ESKD. However, survival, morbidity, and quality of life
remain poor, while cost stays high.
Despite only relatively small proportion of patients with CKD progressing to ESKD, the high costs
of dialysis and transplantation makes 0.1 0.2% of the population consume 1 2% of health resources
in the developed world (3). This puts huge strains on global health systems.
Mortality from End stage Kidney Disease
Over the last few decades, renal replacement therapy with hemodialysis (HD) has become standard
therapy for patients with ESKD. Despite developments in new pharmacological agents,
hemodialysis technology, biocompatibility of membranes, bicarbonate buffer, optimal

Film Comparison
Comparison of Great Expectations (1946) and Pride Prejudice (2005)
Introduction
Films are not only made to entertain, but also discuss social issues surrounding the society. It
serves as the mirror of the society in depicting its culture, traditions, and social conditions. It is
interesting how films are used to show the viewers the different problems revolving around the
country whether it is about love, life, friendship, relationship, marriage, or aging. British films are
using films to illustrate the problems and conditions of their society as they deal with male and
female conflicts, social class, and marriage. Through the years, these issues are still discussed and
explored in the films. The purpose of this paper is to compare two films ... Show more content on

Like Lean s film, Wright s movie also use nonconventional characters, especially Elizabeth who
does not easily comply with the opportunities provided to her. Darcy is also a different kind of
man who does not boast his wealth as he shows discomfort in front of other people. In the film
adaptation, Darcy is shown uncomfortable in society due to his dislike of social interactions.
He prefers the comfort of his solitude to the nuisance of interacting with people and is shown to
find most conversations tiresome, even if the partner is a familiar character like Miss Bingley
(BorbГ©ly, 2011, p.2). This shows that Darcy is a different kind of man because he is not happy
being in front of many people showing his wealth and fineness. This kind of depiction shows that
men evolve not merely based on their generation, but through the way they see life. The depiction
of Darcy is a significant illustration of how men today are not actually looking at their wealth, but
merely on the reality of life and finding someone who can have the same perspectives as

The Importance Of Crime Scene Investigation And Evidence
Crime Scene Investigation and evidence In a crime investigation, police officers play a key role
as first responders. The action police officers take at the beginning of the crime scene play a
vital role in solving the case. Through and carefulness are the two main thing in an investigation
to ensure that potential physical evidence is not tainted or destroyed, or potential witnesses are
not overlooked (Reno, 2000). Thorough an investigation a crucial factor influencing the
ultimate legal significance of evidence is that investigators follow with an objective, thorough
and thoughtful approach (Lewis, 2015). Physical evidence plays a significant role in the
criminal justice system. It is considered as the key element in determining the guilt or innocence
of an individual who is being accused of committing a crime. The uses of evidence in the court
of law is very important, therefore, crime scene investigators must follow a specific protocol
when they are collecting evidences. The goal of this process is the recognize and preserve
physical evidence that will yield reliable information to aid in the investigation (Lewis, 2015).
Crime scene investigation CSI is the abbreviation of crime scene investigation. CSI can be
defined as the examination of a scene of a crime for clues or any physical evidence that may lead
investigators towards identifying a criminal suspect. At every crime scene, there is a story to tell.
A crime scene is like a piece of history. Evidence found a

Risk Of Collateral Circulation
Cerebrovascular circulation is the movement of blood through the central veins and arteries
supplying the brain. Blood supply to the brain is very important and with the help of four main
arteries that is achieved. Those four main arteries consist of the left and right internal carotid
arteries and the left and right vertebral arteries. When there is an area of blockage or plaque
formation in these vessels then a problem may occur. Carotid arterydisease is common and
increases the risk of having a stroke. The collateral circulation is an important aspect affecting the

Analysis Of Alan Ginsberg s Howl
Poetry has a special ability to drive in a main theme or point in the same way that a powerful
image can. It does this through careful selection and use of the language, ensuring the words
create an image in the minds of the reader that is even stronger than the words themselves. Like a
powerful image, poetry can transfer a sense of meaning directly to the subconscious brain
without the conscious mind realizing it. By paying special attention to how this is done within
the poem, analyzing the words used and how they are put together, the meaning of the poem
moves back into the conscious mind and can relate profound meaning regarding the human
condition or the state of society. In his poem HOWL , Alan Ginsberg attempts to comment on
the state of modern society and its effects on the best minds and angel headed hipsters as the
hipsters become crushed under a force collectively termed Moloch from which the only escape
is madness. Ginsberg introduces the protagonists of his story in Part I of the poem. They are the
best minds and angel headed hipsters of his generation, but their lives are a wreck, their
brilliance is wasted, their angel heads are severely tarnished. Written from the point of view of an
insider, the section offers a sympathetic tone to the realistic portrayal. Ginsberg uses a form he
invented called long line verse to offer these descriptions which are really more like mini vignettes
of their lives and organizes them on a fixed base. In this part of

Red Cat Research Paper
The coat of the domestic cat is very diverse, considering all the patterns and colors that a cat can
have. From the hairless sphinx to the rough and tumble calico, genetics play a large part in
determining a cat s coat length, color, and feel. Melanin seems to play an influential role in the
makings of the color of a catcoat because it is what causes the color of hair and eyes.
The coat of a female cat is more likely to be diverse because they have two X chromosomes. The
male only has one X chromosome, which makes some of the combinations for coats, like calico
or tortoiseshell, almost impossible to occur. The Red gene (O) is carried on the X chromosome;
for this reason it is sex linked. Males normally only have one X chromosome and so if a male
carries the Red gene at all, he will be Red. Females have two X chromosomes; if both X
chromosomes carry the Red gene, then the cat will be Red. (Cat Colors FAQ: Cat Color Genetics.
Cat Fanciers Chat, www.fanciers.com/other faqs/color genetics.html) Most cats are not one solid
color because of the genetic diversity.
There are at least eight different loci that are involved in making up a cat s coat color. A
combination of different genotypes and phenotypes often lead to many different cat coat colors.

Musicians are one of many aspects of entertainment that are impacted by the media. Possibly the
biggest shift in music has come through social media through an increased level of interaction
between musicians and fans (Evans). Now that we have social media it benefits the artist and the
fans. The artist is able to broadcast, promote and share things that were not possible before. An
example of this would be the artist can share their latest news, achievements or plans with their

He also says a poem should be silent, wordless, and motionless. This means that the poem shouldn
t have to be so much that it explains every detail, leaving no room for imagination, but yet, the
poem should leave the reader able to imagine for themselves what they think the poem means.
MacLeish says in his last lines that the poem should be so well written that the reader knows
exactly what the poem is, but not what it means. Marianne Moore clarifies poetry as something
that should be original and something that is genuine so that it becomes interesting to the reader.
She states this through out her poem when in the beginning she states that poems become
unintelligible when they are derivative. Then she ends her poem writing that it must be original,
not repetitive to interest the reader. The views and expectations that MacLeish and Moore have
of poetry are somewhat similar because of how their opinions cross. MacLeish thinks poetry
should not tell the reader what it means, but a poem should be so well written that the reader is
able to know what the poem is about. Moore thinks that poetry should be original so that it does
not confuse a reader or leave the reader uninterested half way through a poem. These two views
cross because they both mean originality.

Society has become used to a negative image of adolescents; many just ignore how teenagers

Bible And Leadership In The New Oxford Annotated Bible
Throughout the class Bible and Leadership we the class have learned of leaders that caused great
change. The greatest leader of the The New Oxford Annotated Bible the man who gave birth to the

over societal rules Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash

In Jesus s time Judaismand Jewish society was based around the concept of hierarchy, some

The Nature of Warfare
Throughout history the nature of warfare has remained the same, it is a violent clash of
interests between or among organized groups characterized by the use of military force,
however, the character of war is constantly changing. The means by which wars are fought are no
longer limited to easily identifiable conventional forces, nor do non traditional actors abide by
the same set of international standards and rules of law. The United States can no longer expect

and poses a greater threat to U.S. strategic objectives. All conflicts contain elements of both
regular and irregular warfare and the nature of the conflict can easily shift between them. As a
result, the U.S. military must maintain the ability to be prepared to do both successfully and one
must not come at the expense of the other. The 2012 Defense Strategic Guidance asserts the
Wholesale divestment of the capability to conduct any mission would be unwise, based on
historical and projected uses of U.S. military forces and our inability to predict the future.
Traditional and non traditional warfare are not mutually exclusive and one form of warfare should
not take priority over the other, so it is critical that the U.S. military balance the capabilities

Occult Beliefs
The assigned readings present multiple occult beliefs, and describe potential causes and
reinforcers. Alcock (1995) held the view that the brain and nervous system worked together to
create beliefs targeting survival, while Singer and Benassi (1981) believed social,
environmental, and cognitive factors acted in separate ways to reinforce occult beliefs. Parallels
exist between contributing factors desccrive by Singer and Benassi (1981) and the seven units
listed by Alcock (1995); however, Alcock (1995) described them as causes of the belief engine,
while Singer and Benassi (1981) described them as factors contributing to the support and growth
of occult beliefs. The concept of heuristics was present in Singer and Benassi (1981) cognitive
biases, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

try to be rational, and logical, and think critically, but in uncertain situations, we look to our
environment, the physical and social environment, to provide us with information. Therefore,
superstitions and supernatural phenomenon seem possible if no logical explanation can be given,
and if the feedback from the environment reinforces what could be occult beliefs. French, Haque,
Bunton Stasyshyn, Davis (2009) conducted an experiment attempting to investigate whether they

Participants were informed they may feel some abnormal sensations prior to entering the room.
Majority of participants reported having three or more abnormal sensations in the 50 minute period
they were in the room. These sensations can be a result of susceptibility, but the uncertainty of that
environment, and the lack of information may create these sensations and can validate occult

  • 2. Explain The Economic Logic Underpinning Mahan’S Theory Explain the Economic Logic Underpinning Mahan s Theory of Sea Power Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan published The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660 1783 in 1890, in which he attempted to analyze the role of sea control throughout history. Mahan, a naval officer, used his sea experience to create a theory about naval history that is unlike any other history work. Upon examination of Theodore Momsen s History of the Roman Empire, which included the history of the Second Punic War, Mahan emphasized the significant role that sea communications played in Rome s victory. Additionally, he describes the relevance of different maritime campaigns in various battles that took place during the French and American revolutions. Mahan evaluates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mahan devotes most of his introduction to the history of sea power. He starts by discussing how the manner in which a war is fought changes as navies have evolved from galleys to steam ships as well as the advancement of weapons, but that the principles behind maritime war remain the same. In effort to illustrate the importance of sea power throughout history, Mahan details the impact that sea power had on the second Punic War. The control of the water by the Romans forced Hannibal to depart on the devastating venture through the Gaul. Instead of explaining the actual conflict at hand, Mahan explores the strategy that would have been necessary to defeat Rome. The Carthaginians would have needed to invade the Roman Empire in Italy either by sea or by transport through the Gaul. Rome had control over any strategic location available to the Carthaginians during the war and this was all made possible by the sea. Analyzing this war specifically through the actions of the Roman Navy proves that the history of sea power is crucial in understanding the history of the world. Mahan asserts his belief in the importance of learning from history by stating, The battles of the past succeeded or failed according as they were fought in conformity with the principles of war; and the seaman who carefully studies the causes of success or failure will not only detect and gradually assimilate these principles, but will also inquire increased ... • 4. Evolution Of Flight Research Paper Flight is a very complex function, and in order to develop into what we know now as birds, there are several major evolutionary changes that needed to develop to maturity. In order for fly, the skeletal structure, musculature, respiratory system, circulatory systems, and feathers must all be adapted to allow for an organism to take flight. Many scientists have proposed theories about the origin of flight, but the Arboreal and Cursorial theories have emerged as the strongest cases. Arboreal theories are based around the idea that the organisms climbing into trees jump out of those trees and glide down, eventually adapted to flap to increase drag. This theory is based in the skeletal similarities of gliding animals to those of birds.1 This tree hopping evolution hypothesis is supported by Archaeopteryx, one of the prime examples of a transitional animal for flight. Archaeopteryx presents with long unfused claws that are adaptations for climbing and grasping.3 In addition, there are also presence of a furcula, and a bid like pes with a reversed hallux. Clearly, estrogens are essential for normal human physiology but can have serious adverse effects if allowed to accumulate in the environment and enter the human food chain (Adeel, Song, Wang Yand, 2017). A very important information is that even a person that avoid contact with products potentially dangerous, can be affected indirectly by another form of contamination. One of the examples of the Silent Spring Review (2002) is when a house is built on a site of a former farm that used certain pesticides that persist in soil for many years, even decades. There is an interesting worldwide distribution of estrogens; the pattern of various types of estrogen may reflect sources of estrogens or specific environmental characteristics of that part of the world (Adeel, Song, Wang Yand, 2017). The findings support the original previous research (Stroop, 1935) as a significant difference was found which indicates that when the controlled process of naming a colour is not interfered with then it can be recognized faster whereas when the automatic processes of reading words is involved then the time taken to name the colour is slower due to the interference. The results also support Teccee Happ, 1964, whose experiment used a different method of using colour cards instead of non words but still helped to support their conclusions. They found that participants responded faster with matching the colour with the colour cards as there was no automatic process involved compared to the participants who had to match the colour ink of the word to the colour card. This took the participants longer due to the interference of the automatic process of reading which was what this experiment also found, further supporting the automatic process interference theory. • 9. Consumerism And Consumerism Consumerism is deeply embedded in our culture and heavily influences our day to day behavior and interactions with others. Examples of consumerism include the fashion industry, our obsession with getting the newest technology, and why we purchase a certain type of car. The downside with our obsession of constant buying is that there are so many negative side effects that impact the environment, worker s lives (working conditions, low wages, poor living conditions) and our own relationships with our families, coworkers and friends. There is a lot of evidence of these side effects, and yet we keep buying into this cycle. We should know better, and yet it seems like it will be very hard to get us to change our habits. The works of Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, Phillip Bauman, Julia Pugh in, and Pierre Bourdieu in attempt to explain why we continue to practice consumerist focused lifestyles. In The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, their focus is on the relationship between consumerism and climate change. Pickett and Wilkinson state that the inequality between classes in society increases the cultural pressure to consume more and more, or to consume competitively. This is because we are afraid of looking like we are second class or less than we are, and are afraid of losing our place in society. In this way our obsessive buying habits have become a defense mechanism against falling out of our hard earned place. As the inequality grows and the distinctions between classes becomes ever clearer, we have to work harder in order to keep buying and consuming to stay on top. Because we are spending more, we are saving less and borrowing more, one statistic in the book states that, in 1998 even though the American economy was booming...one family in sixty eight had filed for bankruptcy. (p. 227). In this way consumerism becomes a vicious cycle that is incredibly hard to get out of because there are very few other options. This is all because of how social we are, and how important it is to fit in with those around us. In Liquid Life by Zygmunt Bauman, he explains our need for consumption because of the way society progresses in what he calls a liquid modern society. He describes liquid ... Miller And Arthur Miller s The Crucible And The Red Scare Are you now or were you ever? , this was the question asked at a time in American history when everyone had a hard time trusting anyone. The topic being addressed here is how Miller s statement is true. The statement shows the connection between Miller s book The Crucible and The Red Scare, a situation during Millers time. The reason this is being brought to your attention is because Miller s quote can still be applied to this day. This should be discussed so people can prevent a similar situation like Salem or The Red Scare from happening again. The idea that Miller is trying to convey to his audience is that at this day and age, including in the past, people still struggle to face their own problems and rather succumb to their own paranoia. This statement is true due to the fact that some people will lie at all cost to save themselves, people in authoritative positions aren t always challenged when they should be, and people not realizing that their paranoia can spread like a wildfire. As previously said, there are people who will lie at all cost to save themselves from any consequences. In both situations of The Crucible and The Red Scare whenever someone was given an either or option almost all the time they chose the option that kept them out of trouble, with the exception of some people who did not confess. For example, Medical Ethics written by Dr. Roger Henderson provides a precise model of conduct for the health provider to follow throughly. This formal work compiles a vast amount of strict theory based knowledge in disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and medicine . On the other hand, crossover texts such as Doctors of the Death Chamber written by Atul Gawande detail the failure to uphold this medical standard that has been set and passed throughout generations of medical practitioners. A Short Note On Chronic Kidney Disease ( Ckd ) CHAPTER 1 Introduction Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is emerging as a major challenge for the global health care systems with increasing life expectancy and rising rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension (1). Not surprisingly, the incidence rates of End stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) have been rising world wide with rates ranging from 12 to 455 per million population (pmp) (1). ESKD affects 107 individuals per million population in the United Kingdom (2). Although the incidence rates have been stable from 2006 2010, it has risen from 95pmp in 2001 (2). Prior to the 1960 s when dialysis was available, ESKD was universally fatal. Since the advent of dialysis, ESKD was no longer a terminal condition. With evolving technologies and modifications of the techniques, dialysis developed into a long term treatment for ESKD. However, survival, morbidity, and quality of life remain poor, while cost stays high. Despite only relatively small proportion of patients with CKD progressing to ESKD, the high costs of dialysis and transplantation makes 0.1 0.2% of the population consume 1 2% of health resources in the developed world (3). This puts huge strains on global health systems. The action police officers take at the beginning of the crime scene play a vital role in solving the case. Through and carefulness are the two main thing in an investigation to ensure that potential physical evidence is not tainted or destroyed, or potential witnesses are not overlooked (Reno, 2000). Thorough an investigation a crucial factor influencing the ultimate legal significance of evidence is that investigators follow with an objective, thorough and thoughtful approach (Lewis, 2015). Physical evidence plays a significant role in the criminal justice system. It is considered as the key element in determining the guilt or innocence of an individual who is being accused of committing a crime. The uses of evidence in the court of law is very important, therefore, crime scene investigators must follow a specific protocol when they are collecting evidences. The goal of this process is the recognize and preserve physical evidence that will yield reliable information to aid in the investigation (Lewis, 2015). • 29. Analysis Of Alan Ginsberg s Howl Poetry has a special ability to drive in a main theme or point in the same way that a powerful image can. It does this through careful selection and use of the language, ensuring the words create an image in the minds of the reader that is even stronger than the words themselves. Like a powerful image, poetry can transfer a sense of meaning directly to the subconscious brain without the conscious mind realizing it. By paying special attention to how this is done within the poem, analyzing the words used and how they are put together, the meaning of the poem moves back into the conscious mind and can relate profound meaning regarding the human condition or the state of society. In his poem HOWL , Alan Ginsberg attempts to comment on the state of modern society and its effects on the best minds and angel headed hipsters as the hipsters become crushed under a force collectively termed Moloch from which the only escape is madness. Ginsberg introduces the protagonists of his story in Part I of the poem. They are the best minds and angel headed hipsters of his generation, but their lives are a wreck, their brilliance is wasted, their angel heads are severely tarnished. Written from the point of view of an insider, the section offers a sympathetic tone to the realistic portrayal. Ginsberg uses a form he invented called long line verse to offer these descriptions which are really more like mini vignettes of their lives and organizes them on a fixed base. In this part of ... • 31. Red Cat Research Paper The coat of the domestic cat is very diverse, considering all the patterns and colors that a cat can have. From the hairless sphinx to the rough and tumble calico, genetics play a large part in determining a cat s coat length, color, and feel. Melanin seems to play an influential role in the makings of the color of a catcoat because it is what causes the color of hair and eyes. The coat of a female cat is more likely to be diverse because they have two X chromosomes. The male only has one X chromosome, which makes some of the combinations for coats, like calico or tortoiseshell, almost impossible to occur. The Red gene (O) is carried on the X chromosome; for this reason it is sex linked. Males normally only have one X chromosome and so if a male carries the Red gene at all, he will be Red. Females have two X chromosomes; if both X chromosomes carry the Red gene, then the cat will be Red. (Cat Colors FAQ: Cat Color Genetics. Cat Fanciers Chat, www.fanciers.com/other faqs/color genetics.html) Most cats are not one solid color because of the genetic diversity. The Nature of Warfare Throughout history the nature of warfare has remained the same, it is a violent clash of interests between or among organized groups characterized by the use of military force, however, the character of war is constantly changing. The means by which wars are fought are no longer limited to easily identifiable conventional forces, nor do non traditional actors abide by the same set of international standards and rules of law. The United States can no longer expect to face a purely conventional threat. As a result, the U.S. military must be prepared to conduct both regular and irregular warfare successfully, although irregular warfare is more challenging and poses a greater threat to U.S. strategic objectives. All conflicts contain elements of both regular and irregular warfare and the nature of the conflict can easily shift between them. As a result, the U.S. military must maintain the ability to be prepared to do both successfully and one must not come at the expense of the other. The 2012 Defense Strategic Guidance asserts the Wholesale divestment of the capability to conduct any mission would be unwise, based on historical and projected uses of U.S. military forces and our inability to predict the future.
