Questions On Global Development Of Papua New Guinea, By...
1. The Overarching questions about global development that Professor Jared Diamond wished to
answer were as follows: How did Europeans develop advantages in the first place?, Why did the
world ever become so unequal?, What separates the haves from the have nots?, and How have
guns, germs, and steel shaped the history of the world? He was prompted to begin exploring these
issues when he was visiting Papua New Guinea. He enjoys bird watching and began going to Papua
New Guineawhen he was twenty six. He began making regular trips there since then. On one of
these trips he met a man on the beach named Yali, and Yali asked him Why you white man have
so much cargo and we New Guineans have so little? This threw Diamond for a loop and from that
moment on he began researching and trying to find an answer to Yali s question.
2. Diamond makes a statement in the documentary in which he says The power of Europeans
rests on geography. When he comes to this conclusion he addresses many reasons as to why this
is true. The first being the specific geography of people in Papua New Guinea compared to
people of Eurasia in the Stone Age period. The people of Papua New Guinea are isolated on an
island that is dense with jungle and is wet. In Papua New Guinea there are limited resources for
hunting and very limited sources of nutritious food. The main source of food for New Guineans is
sago. Sago is stripped from the sago trees that grow in the jungles and even though it is edible it

Dracula Archibald Constable And Company 26
1)Stoker, Bram. Dracula Archibald Constable and Company 26 May 1897, EBook
2)Copyright Date 1897, Horror fiction/Gothic fiction. This story was written in the 15th Century,
during the Victorian time period. The three characteristics it portrays are good and evil, not to judge
someone before you know them and man vs. himself
3)Man Vs. Himself
There are clear clashes between characters; in any case, the focal clash is amongst man and his
feelings of trepidation. Dracula really speaks to malice; he is a forcing character who is startling in
both appearance and in his deeds. Alternate characters who interact with him understand how
malevolent and startling he is. Everybody who interacts with him is threatened and terrified by him.

Underneath a finish of blue blooded appeal, the number has a dull and wickedness soul. He can
expect the type of a creature, control the climate, and he is more grounded than twenty men. His
forces are constrained, notwithstanding for example, he can t enter a casualty s home unless
welcomed, can t cross water unless conveyed, and is rendered feeble by sunshine.
6)Act I Dracula touches base in England and begins feeding on Lucy Westenra which makes her
turn.
Act II Dr. Seward and Van Helsing give her blood transfusions, however she transforms into a
vampire at any rate. They execute her and begin laying arrangements to murder Dracula also.
Act III Dracula assaults Mina Harker. Things are looking urgent. The novel wraps up with Dr.
Seward, Van Helsing, and team seeking after Dracula to the doors of Castle Dracula, where they at
long last murder him.
7)The novel mostly is narrated in First Person but with particularly multiple characters, this effected
the tone by switching characters, it actually makes the readers essentially become the characters, or
so they particularly thought.
8)The climax in the story definitely is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph, which kind
of is fairly significant. Before he can completely rise, Harker and Morris for the most part cut him,
however Morris soon basically kicks the bucket of wounds he particularly has endured,
demonstrating how the climax in the story kind of is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph,

Statistics in India Today Past Perfect, Future Tense!
A P Gore

Today we are all used to the idea of young Indian techies traveling all across the world providing
IT solutions and services. But hardly anyone knows that a similar trend started 50 years ago. What?
You ask incredulously. But there were no computers then, let alone PCs. Very true. Those techies
were statisticians, helping many nations, some free and others still in colonial bondage, in their
attempts at development. How did this come about? To answer such a question, we have to trace a
little bit of history. Statistics is a young discipline, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only has the educational establishment been unresponsive to changes in the business world,
there is lack of response to changing technology scene as well. We need to develop new
statistical tools to analyze satellite imagery as well as medical images such as MRI. To my
knowledge only a couple of statisticians work on problems of interpreting such images. Use of
micro array chips in genetics and related fields is on the rise. Again very peculiar statistical
problems are involved in interpretation of these measurements. In the absence of good statistics,
conclusions drawn (e.g. genes selected for further work) may go wrong more often. Again no
thrust has been developed in this area. Lack of purpose and focus is apparent in the fact that even
in areas of traditional strength, our grip is loose. A good example is sample surveys. Two
founding fathers of statistics in India, namely P C Mahalanobis and P V Sukhatme, both recognized
and emphasized the role of statistical sample surveys. India became well known for achievements in
theory and practice of sample surveys. The situation has changed a lot since then. Most experts in
the field have retired and the number of new entrants is miniscule. There is hardly any serious
research being done in the country on survey methodology. Ministry of Statistics and Program
Implementation is running out of names to be included

Doxastic Trust And Preemption Theory Essay
Doxastic trust and Preemption theory support identifying apocalyptic roots through authoritative
topoi. The written expression of Doxastic trust is BcA, where B equals belief and A equals a
resulting compatible belief. Jaakko Hintikka introduced this formula, explaining, In all possible
worlds compatible with what c Believes, it is the case that A ; A (another belief
) follows due to B s
authority, rather than epistemological evidence for A. Scholars writing about Preemption theory
move a step further. A person listening to an authoritative speaker and so accepts p (the
authoritative speaker s view or belief on the subject) will supplant his or her own constructs of
reason with the speaker s in any related area. Christoph JaМ€ger and Paul Faulkner (among other
scholars) have challenged Doxastic trust and Preemption theory of late, but their questions concern
trust development, rather than whether hearer speaker trust exists. Certain necessary conditions,
however, predicate accepting p.
First, trust involves Epistemic Dependence: if H[earer] trusts S[peaker] on O[ccasion meaning the

They borrow it; scholars have long understood Pseudonymous writing a category encompassing
most Second Temple apocalyptic work as writing not just under a famous name, but also assuming
the attached authority and trust. Thus, they also borrow epistemic dependence and semantic
guidance from the ancient topos. The hearers (or readers) know beliefs may change from reading
the text, so the writer must borrow from sufficiently authoritative sources to overcome lingering
doubt, leaving available those topoi already accepted by the community whom the authors are
addressing. Otherwise, the borne message lacks authority to affect beliefs negating the author s
purpose. Finding authoritative topoi in apocalyptic literature therefore lays bare the influences by
which authors make their

Assimilation Literature Review
Section 1:
All of the rhetors agree that assimilation is a problem. However, the issue is figuring out whether
the assimilation of immigrants is either a cultural and/or language conflict, or, if it is an issue of
whiteness. The reason this is an issue is because there are some authors that focus on current
situations with assimilation, and then you have those who base assimilation on situations that are
bygone.

different from those in the past. Immigrants of today are open to an advancement in technology,

Macro Social Work
Social workers create change across various levels and approaches. The levels include micro,
working with individual issues; mezzo, working with families, groups, organizations, etc.; and
macro, intervening and advocating with communities or government. Many Social Workers will
interact at all three levels in their careers. This essay, however, will focus on the importance of
macro social work. Social Workers that work at the macro level are involved in a variety of tasks

Macro social work seeks to address and resolve social justice issues on a larger scale. Social
Workers involved in community organizing encourage and empower citizens to rally around a
mutual problem and bring about meaningful change to their community. The administrative and
management skills needed to manage and support community organizing are essential for any
Social Worker to learn no matter the level at the which they are working. An example of
community organizing during our week 13 class discussion about communities as arenas of
change was the recent gun violence march and protests related to the Parkland school shooting in
Florida is an example of making changes at a macro level. The students and their community

lawmakers to pass stricter gun control laws using slogans such as Vote Them Out and Change Gun

the change has to come from the government in order for change to take place at the local level.

Analysis Of The Sum Of Our Days By Isabel Allende
Write what should not be forgotten Isabel Allende, she is one of the most important latin writers
in the world. With that being said, a well known writer has a great responsibility of advocating us
the people making a change in the world to write by using powerful literary devices such as the
creation of Magical Realism.
For example, Isabel Allende s memoir The Sum Of Our Days depicts the unbearable pain towards
the death of her daughter and at the same time emphasizing her development of a Mental illness
called depression.(Allende 19). While also demonstrating how nonexistent the fsupport for mental
illnesses are in this time period.(Allende 45)

(Allende 19 20)A contrasting theme that I found in the The House Of Spirits is Civilization Vs.
Barbarity and The struggle between classes.(Allende 10 12)Which means that even though both
novels promoted All Rights for Women they gave us a different outlook, because of the way these
events were placed. In my first novel Isabel joined a group with other women and made sure the
community needed to hear their voices, while on the other hand in my second novel instead of
women being the secondary character it was opposite and the men are secondary. Now these themes
are contrasting due to the time period in which both the novels were written in.
In Addition, these themes have taught me a valuable lesson that we women can t be tearing
eachother down to make ourselves better. We women have the same obstacles why are we going
to trip one another when we all should be succeeding in a dreadful society of Men will always be

Cinderella Man American Dream
Forget all the reasons it won t work and believe the one reason that it will. Unknown. This quote
from an unknown author perfectly addresses what I believe a critical step for attaining the
American Dream is. To focus on the reasons someone cannot achieve something will only lead to
disaster, but when someone takes the one reason why they can succeed, they do. There is no better
representation of this and the American Dream than the movie Cinderella Man. It shows that no
matter how bad things are, no matter how many reasons there are to lose faith in yourself, those
who believe can overcome any adversities and find the American Dream.

The underdog from the slums in New Jersey pushed his way to the top, taking down even the most
renowned foes and becoming a glimmer of hope and determination for the people of America. He
not only won the title of world champion, but lived the American Dream at a time where the
country was at its darkest.
This is in essence the purest form of the American Dream that I ve seen. It s an idea that no
matter how terrible life is, if you have the willpower and hope, anything can be achieved. This is
what the American Dream truly is to me. While it may be true that the way the American Dream
is embodied changes through generations, i.e. the fight to be acknowledged in October Sky, the
essence is still the same. The American Dream is to be able to live, work, thrive, and be
whatever you set your mind to. This essence of the American Dream is everything to me because
just a few short months ago the concept of the American Dream meant nothing to me. It was just
a thing my mother talked about at dinner, or a fable that seemed to irrelevant to notice, but that
all changed when I opened my eyes to the real meaning behind it all. It made me feel like there was
a purpose to the chaos, it made it all feel real.
This is especially attributed to Cinderella man, as it showed just how important the American
Dream is, but it showed just how powerful it could be as well. In Cinderella Man,

The Importance Of Ethnic Minorities
Society consists of complex processes which affect different groups in different ways and some
groups, for various reasons, can experience high rates of disadvantage and oppression. Multiple
aspects of a person s identity can create significant bias, resulting in disproportionate treatment.
Young black males for example, especially those from lower socio economic backgrounds, suffer
discrimination considerably more on the basis of their different attributes; being young, male and
belonging to an ethnic minority groupwhilst a status of being from poorer backgrounds further
disadvantages their opportunities and their position in society (Solanke, 2009). Intersectional
frameworks play a key role by enabling a deeper insight into social institutions and practices
concerning ethnic minorities and social problems which arise through inequality. The way
institutions, such as the criminal justice system and the police, deal with ethnic minority groups
contributes to ongoing stigma and discrimination, especially that of young males as their actions
influence external perceptions of the general public towards ethnic minorities, thus allowing for
continued racial abuse and discrimination. This essay will focus on the disparities of young black
and minority ethnic (BME) males in the criminal justice system and identify intersectional
influences overrepresentation within the system in order to recognise the inequalities these people
face and promote social justice.

Comparing Plato s Allegory Of The Cave And The Matrix
In Plato s Allegory of the Cave and the Wachowskis The Matrix, the ideas of truth are that it can
only be defined by how far one is willing to think outside of their own reality. Both the allegory
and the film depict truth as a key of sorts for individuals to break free from their imprisonment.
This can be seen by Neo s physical escape from the pod, which he had been unknowingly trapped
in his whole life and his ascension to light after being swept down the pod s tube. The tube
which swept Neo away is alike to the freed prisoner being dragged...into the sunlight by force in
Plato s allegory; the two characters are being forced to have their senses enlightened once they
ve been freed from the chains on their bodies (but their minds still need to get adjusted to seeing
the world in a new way). However, the allegory and the film differ in that Plato s prison is a
physical cave which houses it s prisoners, while the matrixis a program that confines people s
minds, thus is limitless while inside. With... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the end, it all comes down to perception, whether or not if that perception of ours is skewed.
This is why Plato stresses the importance of the upward journey which the freed prisoner takes,
how it is reached only with difficulty because of the external factors which can alter our minds.
It shows how the intelligible realm of our minds/ why we must constantly reflect upon and
question what we think, even if it s hard to do, because we as humans constantly strive to better
ourselves. Otherwise, on the most basic level of life, what else would be our purpose? The Matrix
film demonstrates this purpose in Neo s search for an answer to the question he had been

3M Singapore controls many market leading brands in their various markets, such as Post ItВ®,
ScotchВ® Tapes, Scotch BriteВ® and Commandв„ў.In this report, we will be focusing on the
brand Commandв„ў.We aim to address the problem of the erosion of Commandв„ў s competitive
advantage in its increasingly competitive industry by providing improved/new BTL strategies
which Command can undertake.
Based on our survey, there are 2 interesting findings which we aim to tackle through our
recommendations. The first of which is that consumers could not differentiate Commandв„ў from
3M. In other words, they viewed Commandв„ў s products as 3M hooks rather than Commandв„ў

Land Surveying During The Civil War
Land Surveying has been around for thousands of years and has an impact on everyday life. From
drawing maps to designing cities with the efficient layouts surveyors effect everybody in one way
or another. Surveying as any profession has had its stars as well. George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln were all surveyors before becoming men of power. Of course
technology from their time has advanced and is actually one of the fastest advancing fields in the
world. The men who founded America though, surveyed the country without aerial drones or gps.
These men used much more basic equipment to mapAmerica. One of the most famous surveying

Essay On Courtesan
The difference between a prostitute and a courtesan is clearly explained by the University of the
Chicago who edited the Selected Poems and Letters of Veronica Franco. It stated that the most
neutral word in mid sixteenth century Italy for a woman who made her living by selling her
sexual services was meretrice, for which an English equivalent would be prostitute. A word used to
insult such women, because it described the poorest class and most morally condemned category of
a sex worker, was puttana, in English, whore . Cortigiana courtesanhad a different meaning. It was
derived from cortigiano, meaning a man who served at court, so it had connotations of splendour

Being a successful courtesan meant independence, avoidance of financial and social subordination
within the traditional patriarchal family structure. It also meant substantial income for the
maintenance of a comfortable, well equipped household. And while as courtesans they may not
have had the social acceptability of proper women, they were respected and conferred status as
professionals in the business of pleasure. (Adler, 1988)
Florentino: Poetry over Family
Leona Florentino (1840 1884) left her son and her husband, who did not accept her writing, and
preferred spending the rest of her life in solitude in another area. Some have suspected that her
son censured his mother s erotic and rebellious production, and, consequently, we can never be
sure what indeed she wrote. Leona Florentino was born in Vigan in an ilustrado family and she
got a private education. She also wrote in Spanish, but mainly in her mother tongue Ilocano.
During the time of the 18th century, opportunities for women were not widely available or were
only limited because of the forces of a highly patriarchal society but despite this, one Filipino
poetess and considered as Mother of Philippine Women s Literature : Leona Florentino, managed to
educate herself. Her works contributed a lot to early movements of feminism which this

Humility In The Early Christian Community
One major issue that the early Christian community is the idea of humility. They had a major
problem with just putting trust in the Lord and listening what the Bible says. My brothers, do let us
have a little humility; let us forget our self assertion and braggadocio and stupid quarreling, and do
what he Bible tells us instead. (p 28). This passage from The First Epistle of Clement to the
Corinthians, shows that it is extremely important to just listen to the Bible and stop trying to figure
out and do everything ourselves. This is impossible and I believe that is what Clement was trying to
tell the Corinthians. Another issue that the early Christian community had was straying from the
Church Manual that was talked about in The Didache.

The Concentration Of Reactants During The Fastest Rate Of...
It was hypothesised that the solution at 80 degrees C and the greatest concentration of reactants
would result in the fastest rates of reaction and reaction time. This was because of the scientific
reasoning that at larger temperatures and concentrations atomic particles collide with greater
energy and more frequently. The data collected from the experiment supports the hypothesis. It was
observed that the largest concentration of reactants, 0.2M and 0.5M, had the highest reaction rateof
0.00484 mol/L/s, and quickest induction phase, 1 second. Also, the slowest reaction time was
21.51 seconds and was the reaction between KIO3 at 0.05M and Na2S2O5 at 0.125M, which were
the smallest amounts of reactant. In addition, the highest temperature tested, which was 80 degrees,
produced the fastest reaction time with 4.58 seconds, while 70 degrees ranked close behind in
second. These results align with previous data and theories, which state that as temperature and
concentration rise, the time it takes to react generally decreases and the reaction rate increases
(Wilbraham, 2002), (UC Davis, n.d.).
From the testing and results several major trends and relationships were discovered. The first
observation, which supports the hypothesis, is the relationship between concentration of reactants
and reaction rate. As concentration increased, the reaction rate also increased in direct proportion.
This was shown by the results because when the concentrations doubled, from 0.1M and 0.125M to

areas for cast members to take the initiative to better themselves, as well as their community and

Starbucks And Its Impact On The United States Essay
Every day, we go to work planning to do two things: offer awesome espresso with our
companions and improve the world a bit. It was genuine when the primary Starbucks opened in
1971, and it s pretty much as genuine today. In those days, the organization was a solitary store in
Seattle s Pike Place Market. From only a slender customer facing facade, Starbucksoffered a portion
of the world s finest new broiled entire bean espressos. The name, roused by Moby Dick, evoked
the sentiment of the high oceans and the nautical custom of the early espresso dealers. In 1981,
Howard Schultz (Starbucks executive and CEO) had at first walked around a Starbucks store and

Crime Statistics Comparison
Comparison of Crime Statistics
Crime statistics endeavour to provide statistical measures of crime in societies. They provide a
point of analysis and comparison, allow countries to form long term patterns and trends and can
help to develop and reform criminal justice policies as well as being more meaningful than raw
numbers. Using the countries of Bahrain and the United States as a comparison point for the
following issues which surround crime statistics such as biases, agendas and general influences
like education and religion; this essay will be focused around analysing the statistical factors and
wider influences which can allow a country to have low or high crime rates.

Wider Influences:
Bahrain is a country which operates on all levels in relation to the teachings of the Qur an. This
makes up the fabric of life for the Bahraini people, the influence of the Islamic religion can be
seen in the economic, political and social pathways of life within the culture of the country. In
Bahrain, religion is the most important structure. The Islamic religion opposes wrongdoing in
all its forms and that any wrongdoing can lead to the downfall of society. The teachings of the
Prophet attempt to get rid of all forms of crime before it happens by influencing the individuals
who follow the religion. Acts against the law therefore is not only a crime against society in the
eyes of Bahraini people it is also a violation of the principles of God. In Bahrain there are even
moral police officers who regulate the dress and public behaviour of citizens (Helal, 1991). As
the Qur an provides the basis for society, it also provides the base for which laws are made. All
laws however have major influence from the Western cultures, apart from marriage, divorce and
succession which all fall under the Shari ah. (Souryal, 1988)Therefore religion is a major influence

Impact of Movies
IMPACT OF MOVIES
THE THREE BIG LIES
The three lies that often movies and movie makers say .....
1. It s only entertainment. It does not influence anybody.

3. We give the public what it wants. If people don t like it they can always turn it off.

Among all media, movies play a major role in impacting the thinking pattern of the society. The
question is whether the influence is positive or negative?
As we all know if a super duper movie is released today then, tomorrow there will be a great
demand of dress of the actor which he wore in the movie. Day after tomorrow people will start

Studies are finding that boys, like girls, may turn to smoking to lose weight. Even the
Bollywood/Hollywood fashion has a huge impact on the youth. When youngsters see their
favorite actors/actresses wearing fashionable clothes and accessories they imitate them. So, to
copy their style icons, they spend thousands to lakhs of rupees to have the same pair of shoes or
dress. They don t mind spending money, but they want to look just as perfect as their favorite
movie star. In this way the fashion statements set by celebrities lay a negative impact on
youngsters. ALCOHOL, DRUGS, SMOKING: Movies are spoiling the youth and children most
because there is the competition between youths to copy the style of the hero either it was good
or bad. Children who watch a lot of movies featuring alcohol are twice as likely to start drinking
compared to other kids who watch relatively few of such films, according to new research. The
more smoking and drinking that young teens see in movies, the more likely they are to start
smoking or binge drink, according to a pair of new studies. To find out more about movies
influence on alcohol use in young teens, researchers surveyed more than 16,000 adolescents ages
10 to 19. They randomly picked 50 box office hits from a list of 655 films. They then asked the
teens how often they had seen each movie, which was color coded for scenes of alcohol use.

Essay about Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society
Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society Throughout history, the roles of women and men have
always differed to some degree. In ancient Greece, the traditional roles were clear cut and defined.
Women stayed home to care for children and do housework while men left to work. This system
of society was not too far off the hunter gatherer concept where women cared for the house and the
men hunted. Intriguingly enough, despite the customary submissive role, women had a more
multifaceted role and image in society as juxtaposed with the rather simple role men played.
Morals for the two were also different. Men obviously had the upper hand with women being the
traditional passive. For an example, it was quite acceptable for a man to commit... Show more

As shown, women were considered naturally submissive as in most other old cultures. This is
somewhat understandable as women were the ones who bore children and men provided for the
family unit. As time progressed, this stereotype was over emphasized into what is portrayed in
these plays and poems. Despite this submissive image, Greek women were not considered naГЇve,
but a pleasurable if a bit foolish kind of a creature. In Aristophane?s play, Lysistrata, this concept
is amply portrayed. Most of the women are portrayed, as impulsive individuals while men are
carnal gluttons. Notwithstanding this facet of their image women could also be wily as Medea
and Lysistrata: ?What is more, you were born a woman, And women, though most helpless in
doing good deeds, Are of every evil the cleverest of contrives? The deceitful female is epitomized
by the character of Aphrodite in Euripidies?s Hippolytus. Due to having her altar neglected (as in
the case of Psyche) she plotted to bring ruin to Hippolytus and all those who loved him. At the end
of the play, Artemis plots revenge against Aphrodite (also called Cypris) saying: ?Hush, that is
enough! You shall not be unavenged, Cypris shall find the angry shafts she hurls Against you for
you?re your piety and innocence Shall cost her dear. I?ll wait until she loves a mortal next time,

Questions on the Rescue of the Chilean Miners
Over 30 Workers Trapped Introduction On August 5, 2010 the 121 year old San Jose copper and
gold mine collapsed in Southern Chile (trapping 33 miners beneath the surface). During the ordeal,
there was a tremendous public relations effort behind the scenes that was occurring. To fully
understand what took place requires looking at: the considerations for the different kinds of
stakeholders, the actions that must be taken before / after the message is delivered and creating
two sample communications for constituents. Together, these elements will provide the greatest
insights as to how information is released by taking the various viewpoints into account. (Lusted,
2012) What are some considerations to remember given the different roles and people in the
audience? During the process of communicating with everyone is when there will be different
roles for stakeholders. The way that this will occur is to take into account a number of factors to
include: the sensitivity of the message, what kinds of information are being conveyed and the tone.
The combination of these elements will help to inform the audience and provide a way of offering
a form of hope. (Lusted, 2012) (Coombs, 2012, pp. 243 281) What would be the potential needs of
the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident? The needs of the families are
to receive pertinent information about their loved ones. This means that the company must take
into account: the sensitivity of the message,

Who Is John s Identity In Brave New World
In a futuristic utopian society in which people are grown as nearly identical embryos in bottles,
finding someone who is a complete outcast from the rest of society is rare. In Brave New World,
the author, Aldous Huxley, makes John an exception. Isolated, disengaged, and rejected, John is
truthfully not apart of the civilized World State culture or the savage Indian culture. Being the only
person in the book not born in a laboratory, John additionally stands to represent a unique human
being whose identity and family relationships violate all the other s societal ideals. His experience

Two of the World State beliefs that John feels the strongest opposed to include soma distribution
and sex. John believes that soma is a sedating drug which the government gives to the civilized

withholds. John picks this up in Chapter 15 of the novel when he throws the Delta s soma out

also disagrees with the World State s view on sex, which can be partially attributed to his reading
of Shakespeare work. In the various books John has read, Shakespeare talks about sex as if it is
a special activity for two people who love each other and intend to marry. On the other hand, the
World State strongly encourages erotic play for people of all ages as strictly a form of
entertainment. If it was anything more, such as emotional bonding, it would destabilize the world

The Effects Of Consumerism
Consumerism comes from the verb consume, which is rooted in the Latin word consumere,
meaning to use up or to waste. The noun consumerism also refers to a movement that promotes the
interests of consumers that is, people who purchase goods, use them, and then buy more especially
the protection of these consumers from things like fraud or price gouging ( Consumerism).
Consumerism has changed over the thousands of years that people have been living. Some
people believe that consumerism is great where it helps stimulate the economy, but other people
see it as an evil force because it hurts people and makes them care less about their self and the

I have had the pleasure of teaching Maiyuki Druen for three years; as an 8th grader in Advanced
Geometry, as a sophomore in Math 174 Dual Credit Pre Calculus through Morehead State
University, and currently as a junior in AP Calculus. In 8th grade, Maiyuki chose to arrive at
school an hour earlier in order to take Advanced Geometry at the high school. She was by far the
best student in the class, even though she was in a class of extremely bright freshmen and
sophomore high school students. Constantly pursuing opportunities for herself, as a sophomore,
she chose to take a dual credit class designed for juniors and seniors. She requested special
permission in order to take this college level class as a sophomore, and it was granted based on
her stellar academic record. She continues to push herself academically in my AP Calculusclass. She
accepts the challenging problems I assign to the class as an opportunity to further develop her
understanding of the mathematics we are studying. She often spends time analyzing the different
approaches to a problem in order to determine the best course of action, and will diligently work the
solution discussing her results with her peers. Often I will observe her having a discussion about
the problem solving process with a fellow student rather than just conferring about her solution.
While actively engaging in class discussions, she will articulate beautiful solutions in such detail

Objectives Of Six Sigma
SIX SIGMA:
Six Sigma means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Six Sigma is a disciplined
and data driven approach or methodology for eliminating defects (driving towards six standard
deviations between the mean and the nearest specification limit) in any process , from
manufacturing to transactional and from product to service. The statistical representation of Six
Sigma describes quantitatively how a process is performing. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must
not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. A defect is defined as any process
output that does not meet customer specifications. The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma
methodology is the implementation of a measurement based strategy that focuses on process
improvement and variation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Six Sigma as a measurement standard in product variation can be traced back to the 1920 s when
Walter Shewhart showed that three sigma from the mean is the point where a process requires
correction. Many measurement standards (Cpk, Zero Defects, etc.) later came on the scene but
credit for coining the term Six Sigma goes to a Motorola engineer named Bill Smith. (Incidentally,
Six Sigma is a federally registered trademark of Motorola).
In the early and mid 1980s with Chairman Bob Galvin at the helm, Motorola engineers decided that
the traditional quality levels measuring defects in thousands of opportunities didn t provide enough
granularity. Instead, they wanted to measure the defects per million opportunities. Motorola
developed this new standard and created the methodology and needed cultural change associated
with it. Six Sigma helped Motorola realize powerful bottom line results in their organization in fact,
they documented more than $16 Billion in savings as a result of our Six Sigma

Personal Statement For Marine Biology
Personal Statement
Education has always been an important foundation upon which my family encouraged the most.
Not just the education pertaining to structured schooling, but the fundamentals in life that require
you to interact in society and be a part of something bigger than yourself. They demonstrated how
to commit to values such as responsibility, motivation, and consistency; and, how to be open
minded and passionate about the things you believe in. These things all required a sacrifice in
various ways. They always stress how sometimes you need to give up something to get ahead, or
how sometimes sacrificing the familiar and what you expect from yourself to get the results that
you are seeking in the long run.
The dream of having majored in marine biology is one thing, but to get to have a marine biology
degree is a fifth grader s dream come true. The environment is heading in a rough direction. For
example, ocean acidification is already a problem. The decrease in pH of our ocean acidity is
causing coral reefs to die out which houses thousands of organisms homes and food sources. Due
to the contaminants, we release into the natural environment, we are slowly losing ecosystems
every day. Therefore, I want to be the researcher to help save the oceanic life from these horrible
conditions. Also, the career of marine biology can take a person anywhere, from the coasts of the

Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis
It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit
in the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s
short story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature,
authors use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis
, Doodle is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to
get Doodle to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want
to deal with the embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst
uses figurative language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that
really matter.
The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within
himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed
he feels great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to
walk further develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns
something new about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful,
terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself
causes him to push Doodle to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is
doing this for Doodle, that he wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother
wants to feel good about himself by developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start
to walk, the reader sees how the brother disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds,
which are the start of any vegetable, plant or flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can
lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a more self confident life, and another that causes
pain and suffering in others. Through the use of metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own
insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions for the wrong reasons.
Furthermore, Hurst s use of personification also adds to the theme, by revealing

Human Interrupt Water Transduction Essay Essay
Human interrupt water pathways in two ways
1. Withdrawals:
We take water out of the system to irrigate crops, to provide us with drinking water and to carry out
many of our industrial processes.
2. Discharges:
We add substances to the water intentionally or not. As precipitation falls on the ground and moves
into rivers and creeks, it picks up a whole range of pollutants. In rural areas these pollutants may
include farm pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers as well as wastes from faulty septic systems and
improperly handled manure. In urban areas, the pollutants may include gas, oil, pet waste,
fertilizers, pesticides, salt and treated human waste from sewage treatment plants.
What we do to this system affects everything within it. For example, what happens if rain that falls
from the sky or the water that flows through our streams is contaminated? These contaminants may
infect plant or animal life including human beings, or reduce their ability to grow and reproduce.
What happens if large quantities of water are diverted or taken out of the system? The reduced
flow will likely affect the local water supply but it may eventually change the local environment
and alter the plant and animal species that are found here. As we place different stresses on this
system, we run the risk of altering or overloading it and causing serious harm.
The Credit River is an important part of the watershed and the water cycle in this area. What we do
here affects us locally and

throughout the colonies of America, the slaves were obviously not treated with the upmost respect.
They were not treated as people, but more as domesticated animals whose sole purpose was to
serve their master. The exact definition of dehumanization is to deprive someone of human traits or
qualities. The television series Roots focused on Kunta Kinte, a native African who was captured
and sold into slavery. Examples of dehumanization are shown throughout the series and how it
effects Kunta, the other enslaved Africans, and what role it played in the slave trade itself. The
harsh dehumanization represented in the show proved to be a very controversial and... Show more

No slave was respected or treated the same way as their masters were. For instance, Fiddler was
a slave of a particular high status but Mr. Reynolds still made him perform the same chores as
the others. He may have had better arrangements such as food from the actual kitchen and a bed
to sleep on, but he would never be and could never be thought of as someone on the same level
of his master. For enslaved women, the treatment was even worse. They were passed around and
chosen by men as if they were simply items in a store. Usually, if a man noticed an enslaved
woman and took particular interest in her, she would be delivered to him so he could do
whatever he pleased with her (just as someone would do if they found a certain product they
liked). This act was extremely violating and the fact that the woman had no choice in the matter
and had to comply or face punishment made it worse. These violations are emotionally damaging
to the woman as shown by the grief and shame expressed by a woman from Kunta s tribe when
she tells him she is no longer a maiden of the Mandinka . The enslaved people of the time were
treated no better than a piece of meat. They were stripped of their basic human rights and handled
as if they were nothing more than

War Takes Over Everything in Walt Whitmanв
Ђ™s Poem, Drum
Taps
The overall theme in Walt Whitman s Drum Taps is about the way war consumes everything and
monopolizes every facet of life; particularly the land the war is fought on. When analyzing the
poem, the first stanza talks about the movement of war from the farms, the second stanza talks
about the progression of warfrom the farm to the city. In stanza three this journey continues through
the battlefield, through the halls of power and finally into the homes, moving from the public to
private spheres of life. Throughout the entire poem there is an emphasized pulse of drums that
beats within the lines. This pulse of drums resonates throughout the entire poem and prompts me to
wonder how Whitman intended to utilize this mechanism. Furthermore, I want to uncover if the
sounds of these drums is symbolic in some way, and if they are, then I wonder if this symbolism
represents a positive view or negative view on war.
My first interpretation is that these drums represent Whitman s negative perspective on war. I feel
that the use of the pulse of drums throughout the poem acts as a mechanism that Whitman uses in
order to discourage war. I feel that these sounds are symbolic of the dire news at the time that
consisted of the battles. It seems that Whitman is addressing this pulse of drums in attempt to
highlight the effect this war will have on the country. In this poem, I see the clear cry for battle as a
cry by someone who is naГЇve and does not yet know what the ultimate cost of war

Reading Response
Reading Reflection Response As the American education system works to facilitate changes to
improve the success of students, much attention has been given to the importance of reading
instruction. The decline of reading scores across the country has called for researchers to
investigate the reading process and decipher which methods best promote successful reading. Alan
Kamhi (2009) stirred a variety of reactions after authoring The Case for the Narrow View of
Reading, in which he argues that poor reading skills stem from the American educationsystem
combining word recognition and comprehension into a single unit, and from a lack of acquiring
content knowledge in other academic areas. Kamhi argues that teaching instruction in reading
should focus solely on word recognition while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Catts argues that fixating solely upon decoding is not be the best option because while
comprehension is dependent upon knowledge, it also a complex cognitive process that takes more
than just knowledge to comprehend a text (2009). Looking at educational implications, Catts states
that the education system should provide limited direct reading instruction while focusing on
content area instruction with engaging activities that require active listening and participation
(2009). Catts recommends that early reading materials and curriculum should be content rich
expository and narrative passages, with the introduction of reading comprehension strategies after
students have learned to successfully decode texts. Looking at implications for speech language
pathology practice, Catts asserts that SLPs need to play a key role in working to early identify
students at risk for developing reading disabilities; and then utilize dynamic assessment and
response to intervention to monitor potential risk students. According to Catts, SLPs need to be
aware of the need to for domain specific knowledge and complex processes included in reading and
comprehension when

What Are The Struggles In The Diary Of Anne Frank
Finding joy in life can be a struggle when going through troublesome circumstances, but many are
able to persevere through the support from our family and friends. The Diary of Anne Frank by
Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett describes the life of a Jewish teenager, Anne Frank, while she
is in hiding from an environment that is prejudiced to Jews. Throughout the story, it depicts the
confined conditions Anne must endure in order to stay alive and away from the anti Semitic
government. During the time in which she stays in the Secret Annex, she grows tremendously,
maturing in a multitude of ways. Anne Frankmanages to stay optimistic in spite of the hardships she
often faces through the attachments she creates with the objects and people... Show more content on

The Franks and Van Daans have enshrouded themselves in their annex for several months, but
the Nazis tolerance for Jews has only gotten worse. The deafening, thunderous sounds of war
finally takes a toll on Anne, and one day she wakes up screaming from a nightmare, immediately
seeking the comfort of her father. I m trying. Really I am. Every night I think back over all of the
things I did that day...I have a nicer side, Father... a sweeter, nicer side (247). Anne realizes that
her actions to others have been unkind and inconsiderate. She understands that at times she may
be insensitive, but she tries to make amends, clearly illustrating how much she has matured.
Disclosing those thoughts to her father Whenever the stress and pressure of hiding gets to be too
much, she knows she can always turn to her father. The connection between them is inextricable;
Anne has spent the majority of her life spending time with her father, from the small study
sessions they have to discussing their favorite books. Anne reveals all her concerns and sorrows
to her father, and she relies solely on him to give her advice and listen to her problems. Spending
time conversing with Mr. Frank soothes her worries, and she finds comfort in simply hearing his
wise words. Anne sees her father as a pillar of strength, someone she can lean on when she is
experiencing burdensome tasks. Anne perceives Mr. Frank as calm, logical, and supportive. For
this reason, he becomes Anne s closest confidante, and she completely believes that he will not
harshly criticize her actions, but rather give her carefully thought out guidance. As a result, the
support from her father helps encourage her to stay hopeful for the

Paper 1 Introduction The process by which Scripture has been preserved and compiled is one
whose history is worth noting. The early church had many opportunities to share the Good News of
Christ via word of mouth, but from the time of Christ s resurrection until the mid second century,
there had not been a single culmination of writings considered to be essential for the purposes of...

Marcion believed that the Jewish Scriptures only concerned the covenant between God and the
Jews of Israel, and therefore was no longer valid for the Christian church. In his mind, these were
two very separate Gods. When noticing that several of Paul s writings made mention of the God
of Israel, Marcion claimed that those writings were not Paul s original texts, and should be
considered counterfeit. Marcion s views of Paul s forged portions of his letters can be attributed
to what many theologians today might call the Slippery Slope Argument. In this case, Marcion
chose not to trust in the inerrancy of what God had spoken to Paul. Paul s writing s were flawed,
or someone must have tampered with them. This lack of trust in inerrancy would ultimately allow
Marcion to fall down a slippery slope , giving way to forsake other important Christian foundational
truths. As his ideologies became more widespread, it became obvious that Marcion s views on
creation were radically reinterpreted (or misinterpreted, better yet), as well as his opinions on the
doctrines of incarnation and the resurrection. Ultimately, the church at large came to the conclusion
that his doctrines contradicted several fundamental points in Christian doctrine. It forced the church
to make a case for the value and status of the Jewish scriptures it had adopted as its own, and it

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc.
In March of 2009, the SEC filed a cease and desist order to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., for their
actions in prior years. The corporation had purposely inflated their earnings throughout 2003 and
2004 in an attempt to meet Wall Street expectations and retain their investors. With the over
inflation of their actual earnings, Krispy Kremewas able to present a higher earnings per share (EPS)
to the public and therefore become more favorable among investors. In this case there are three
primary transactions known as round trip transactions that occur. This meaning that the company
was paying set amounts to franchisee s and then expecting them to return the payments in a
prearranged manner. In doing so, this would allow Krispy Kreme to record extra pretax incomeand
therefore inflate their profits. There were also reports of channel stuffing that surfaced from
former employees once the SEC began investigating Krispy Kreme. According to the reports
Krispy Kreme would send double orders at the end of the year in order to boost their sales and
meet expectations. Those orders would then be returned and credited at the beginning of the next
fiscal year. Price Waterhouse Coopers were the auditors at the time and would then face serious
questioning as to why they never noticed the increased shipments at the end of each year followed
by the credits when the orders were returned the next year. Looking at the three incidents that
occurred each had their own unique distinctions while

When navigating to the official website of Self, one of today s leading women s magazines, I
was not surprised to immediately stumble upon a photograph of two slender women, in skimpy
shorts and sports bras, exercising on the beach. Flat belly Secrets was the headline under the
image, along with the subtopics Magic Moves that Work Your Whole Core, Superfoods for a Sexy
Stomach, and 4 Ab Mistakes Everyone Makes. It is no secret that modern American culture gives
great importance to body image, namely to having a perfect physique, although a vast majority of
the population is far from attaining said physique. I struggled for years to make peace with my

The internalization of the thin ideal denotes a key cause of such dissatisfaction (Dittmar). Thin
ideal internalization is the degree to which a person will consciously accept a social definition of
beauty, and in turn take action to parallel these values (Thompson and Stice). The mass media is
viewed by countless body image experts as a particularly potent and pervasive root of thin ideal
internalization because of the notoriously unattainable idea of perfection it portrays (Boone et
al.). Young girls and women are plagued every day by images of pin thin, underweight women,
not so subtle implications of the standard of attractiveness that they feel expected to meet, and
are made to feel inadequate when they inevitably fail. From Sterk s article of how she went about
doing her fieldwork on prostitution, I realized that the interview process is lengthier than I
originally thought. Though my research does not require me to establish a close relationship with
my interviewees as much as Sterk s did (my topic isn t nearly as sensitive and I am not doing
fieldwork as part of my profession), I learned that in order to obtain the most honest answers, I must
take time to engage in conversation, not jump straight to questions relevant to my report. Obviously

State agencies submit their requests to the governor in October. Public hearings are held in
February and March. The governor shows his or her proposed budget to the state legislature in
February. The legislature adopts a new budget in May. A majority vote 2/3 of the Senate is
required to pass a budget. The governor has line item veto authority. Line item veto is when an
executive authority decides to nullify specific parts of a bill, usually a budget bill. The governor
is legally required to submit a balanced budget proposal, but the legislature is not required to pass a
balanced budget. The governor ultimately controls the budget. The legislative branch can oversee
the executive by overturning votes on the budget, and also has the ability to overturn the governor s
line item veto or veto. The governor also has limited appointment power he has to have consent
from the senate before he can appoint anyone. This gives the legislative branch an advantage; many
governors have to consult with key legislators before making formal nominations. The confirmation
process allows executive branch appointments to be used by legislatures to gain influence on
governors and their policies. The governor also has to have majority vote to pass a budget
nomination before the entire Senate body.
If the nomination is made the Senate must make its decision within 25 legislative days after the
nomination is

The Historical Figure Of Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony was born February 15, 1820 and raised in very religious household. She first
started off as teacher before she became and extravagant women that not just worked for herself
but for many other women s rights. Susan B. Anthony should be a historical figure due to the
fact that she went through so much suffering. In which she fought for the women s right to vote
and as well as gender equality. Not only did she just fight for women s right but as well to get rid
of alcohol and did not support slavery by campaigning against them. People look down on her
and despise her due to the reasoning that she voted illegally and took matter in to her own hands
and was put into prison for it. Which cause women to get more hate and not receive their equal
rights faster. Another reasoning people might not think she should be historical is because she
said a racist comment. Despite all these things she dint just think of herself but for everyone. She
never gave up and always kept writing and lecturing about equality which has helped every women
have equal right and as well inspired many women that anything can be possible no matter their
gender. Early life Susan B Anthony was the second oldest of eight. Most importantly she was born
into a family who was against slavery and they were always very involved in helping others.
According to Nps.gov it states Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts ... Antislavery Quakers
met at their farm almost every Sunday, where they

  • 2. Questions On Global Development Of Papua New Guinea, By... 1. The Overarching questions about global development that Professor Jared Diamond wished to answer were as follows: How did Europeans develop advantages in the first place?, Why did the world ever become so unequal?, What separates the haves from the have nots?, and How have guns, germs, and steel shaped the history of the world? He was prompted to begin exploring these issues when he was visiting Papua New Guinea. He enjoys bird watching and began going to Papua New Guineawhen he was twenty six. He began making regular trips there since then. On one of these trips he met a man on the beach named Yali, and Yali asked him Why you white man have so much cargo and we New Guineans have so little? This threw Diamond for a loop and from that moment on he began researching and trying to find an answer to Yali s question. 2. Diamond makes a statement in the documentary in which he says The power of Europeans rests on geography. When he comes to this conclusion he addresses many reasons as to why this is true. The first being the specific geography of people in Papua New Guinea compared to people of Eurasia in the Stone Age period. The people of Papua New Guinea are isolated on an island that is dense with jungle and is wet. In Papua New Guinea there are limited resources for hunting and very limited sources of nutritious food. The main source of food for New Guineans is sago. Sago is stripped from the sago trees that grow in the jungles and even though it is edible it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This story was written in the 15th Century, during the Victorian time period. The three characteristics it portrays are good and evil, not to judge someone before you know them and man vs. himself 3)Man Vs. Himself There are clear clashes between characters; in any case, the focal clash is amongst man and his feelings of trepidation. His forces are constrained, notwithstanding for example, he can t enter a casualty s home unless welcomed, can t cross water unless conveyed, and is rendered feeble by sunshine. 6)Act I Dracula touches base in England and begins feeding on Lucy Westenra which makes her turn. Act II Dr. Seward and Van Helsing give her blood transfusions, however she transforms into a vampire at any rate. They execute her and begin laying arrangements to murder Dracula also. Act III Dracula assaults Mina Harker. Things are looking urgent. The novel wraps up with Dr. Seward, Van Helsing, and team seeking after Dracula to the doors of Castle Dracula, where they at long last murder him. 7)The novel mostly is narrated in First Person but with particularly multiple characters, this effected the tone by switching characters, it actually makes the readers essentially become the characters, or so they particularly thought. 8)The climax in the story definitely is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph, which kind of is fairly significant. Before he can completely rise, Harker and Morris for the most part cut him, however Morris soon basically kicks the bucket of wounds he particularly has endured, demonstrating how the climax in the story kind of is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph, ... A P Gore Professor, Department of Statistics, University of Pune President, Indian Society for Probability and Statistics Today we are all used to the idea of young Indian techies traveling all across the world providing IT solutions and services. But hardly anyone knows that a similar trend started 50 years ago. What? You ask incredulously. But there were no computers then, let alone PCs. Very true. Those techies were statisticians, helping many nations, some free and others still in colonial bondage, in their attempts at development. How did this come about? To answer such a question, we have to trace a little bit of history. Statistics is a young discipline, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only has the educational establishment been unresponsive to changes in the business world, there is lack of response to changing technology scene as well. We need to develop new statistical tools to analyze satellite imagery as well as medical images such as MRI. To my knowledge only a couple of statisticians work on problems of interpreting such images. Use of micro array chips in genetics and related fields is on the rise. Again very peculiar statistical problems are involved in interpretation of these measurements. In the absence of good statistics, conclusions drawn (e.g. genes selected for further work) may go wrong more often. Again no thrust has been developed in this area. Lack of purpose and focus is apparent in the fact that even in areas of traditional strength, our grip is loose. A good example is sample surveys. Two founding fathers of statistics in India, namely P C Mahalanobis and P V Sukhatme, both recognized and emphasized the role of statistical sample surveys. India became well known for achievements in theory and practice of sample surveys. The situation has changed a lot since then. Most experts in the field have retired and the number of new entrants is miniscule. There is hardly any serious research being done in the country on survey methodology. • 6. Doxastic Trust And Preemption Theory Essay Doxastic trust and Preemption theory support identifying apocalyptic roots through authoritative topoi. The written expression of Doxastic trust is BcA, where B equals belief and A equals a resulting compatible belief. Jaakko Hintikka introduced this formula, explaining, In all possible worlds compatible with what c Believes, it is the case that A ; A (another belief ) follows due to B s authority, rather than epistemological evidence for A. Scholars writing about Preemption theory move a step further. A person listening to an authoritative speaker and so accepts p (the authoritative speaker s view or belief on the subject) will supplant his or her own constructs of reason with the speaker s in any related area. Christoph JaМ€ger and Paul Faulkner (among other scholars) have challenged Doxastic trust and Preemption theory of late, but their questions concern trust development, rather than whether hearer speaker trust exists. The hearers (or readers) know beliefs may change from reading the text, so the writer must borrow from sufficiently authoritative sources to overcome lingering doubt, leaving available those topoi already accepted by the community whom the authors are addressing. There is no better representation of this and the American Dream than the movie Cinderella Man. It s an idea that no matter how terrible life is, if you have the willpower and hope, anything can be achieved. This is what the American Dream truly is to me. While it may be true that the way the American Dream is embodied changes through generations, i.e. the fight to be acknowledged in October Sky, the essence is still the same. The American Dream is to be able to live, work, thrive, and be whatever you set your mind to. This essence of the American Dream is everything to me because just a few short months ago the concept of the American Dream meant nothing to me. It was just a thing my mother talked about at dinner, or a fable that seemed to irrelevant to notice, but that all changed when I opened my eyes to the real meaning behind it all. • 12. The Importance Of Ethnic Minorities Society consists of complex processes which affect different groups in different ways and some groups, for various reasons, can experience high rates of disadvantage and oppression. Multiple aspects of a person s identity can create significant bias, resulting in disproportionate treatment. Young black males for example, especially those from lower socio economic backgrounds, suffer discrimination considerably more on the basis of their different attributes; being young, male and belonging to an ethnic minority groupwhilst a status of being from poorer backgrounds further disadvantages their opportunities and their position in society (Solanke, 2009). Intersectional frameworks play a key role by enabling a deeper insight into social institutions and practices concerning ethnic minorities and social problems which arise through inequality. The way institutions, such as the criminal justice system and the police, deal with ethnic minority groups contributes to ongoing stigma and discrimination, especially that of young males as their actions influence external perceptions of the general public towards ethnic minorities, thus allowing for continued racial abuse and discrimination. Comparing Plato s Allegory Of The Cave And The Matrix In Plato s Allegory of the Cave and the Wachowskis The Matrix, the ideas of truth are that it can only be defined by how far one is willing to think outside of their own reality. This can be seen by Neo s physical escape from the pod, which he had been unknowingly trapped in his whole life and his ascension to light after being swept down the pod s tube. The tube which swept Neo away is alike to the freed prisoner being dragged...into the sunlight by force in Plato s allegory; the two characters are being forced to have their senses enlightened once they ve been freed from the chains on their bodies (but their minds still need to get adjusted to seeing the world in a new way). A word used to insult such women, because it described the poorest class and most morally condemned category of a sex worker, was puttana, in English, whore . • 19. The Concentration Of Reactants During The Fastest Rate Of... It was hypothesised that the solution at 80 degrees C and the greatest concentration of reactants would result in the fastest rates of reaction and reaction time. This was because of the scientific reasoning that at larger temperatures and concentrations atomic particles collide with greater energy and more frequently. The data collected from the experiment supports the hypothesis. It was observed that the largest concentration of reactants, 0.2M and 0.5M, had the highest reaction rateof 0.00484 mol/L/s, and quickest induction phase, 1 second. Also, the slowest reaction time was 21.51 seconds and was the reaction between KIO3 at 0.05M and Na2S2O5 at 0.125M, which were the smallest amounts of reactant. In addition, the highest temperature tested, which was 80 degrees, produced the fastest reaction time with 4.58 seconds, while 70 degrees ranked close behind in second. These results align with previous data and theories, which state that as temperature and concentration rise, the time it takes to react generally decreases and the reaction rate increases (Wilbraham, 2002), (UC Davis, n.d.). From the testing and results several major trends and relationships were discovered. The first observation, which supports the hypothesis, is the relationship between concentration of reactants and reaction rate. As concentration increased, the reaction rate also increased in direct proportion. This was shown by the results because when the concentrations doubled, from 0.1M and 0.125M to ... • 24. Essay about Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society Throughout history, the roles of women and men have always differed to some degree. In ancient Greece, the traditional roles were clear cut and defined. Women stayed home to care for children and do housework while men left to work. This system of society was not too far off the hunter gatherer concept where women cared for the house and the men hunted. Intriguingly enough, despite the customary submissive role, women had a more multifaceted role and image in society as juxtaposed with the rather simple role men played. • 36. Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s short story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature, authors use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis , Doodle is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to get Doodle to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want to deal with the embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst uses figurative language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that really matter. The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed he feels great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to walk further develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns something new about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself causes him to push Doodle to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is doing this for Doodle, that he wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother wants to feel good about himself by developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start to walk, the reader sees how the brother disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds, which are the start of any vegetable, plant or flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a more self confident life, and another that causes pain and suffering in others. Through the use of metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions for the wrong reasons. Withdrawals: We take water out of the system to irrigate crops, to provide us with drinking water and to carry out many of our industrial processes. 2. Discharges: We add substances to the water intentionally or not. As precipitation falls on the ground and moves into rivers and creeks, it picks up a whole range of pollutants. In rural areas these pollutants may include farm pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers as well as wastes from faulty septic systems and improperly handled manure. In urban areas, the pollutants may include gas, oil, pet waste, fertilizers, pesticides, salt and treated human waste from sewage treatment plants. What we do to this system affects everything within it. For example, what happens if rain that falls from the sky or the water that flows through our streams is contaminated? These contaminants may infect plant or animal life including human beings, or reduce their ability to grow and reproduce. What happens if large quantities of water are diverted or taken out of the system? • 41. Example Of Dehumanization In Colonial History Dehumanization in History and Historical Fiction In the past, when slavery was common throughout the colonies of America, the slaves were obviously not treated with the upmost respect. They were not treated as people, but more as domesticated animals whose sole purpose was to serve their master. The exact definition of dehumanization is to deprive someone of human traits or qualities. The television series Roots focused on Kunta Kinte, a native African who was captured and sold into slavery. Examples of dehumanization are shown throughout the series and how it effects Kunta, the other enslaved Africans, and what role it played in the slave trade itself. The harsh dehumanization represented in the show proved to be a very controversial and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No slave was respected or treated the same way as their masters were. For instance, Fiddler was a slave of a particular high status but Mr. Reynolds still made him perform the same chores as the others. He may have had better arrangements such as food from the actual kitchen and a bed to sleep on, but he would never be and could never be thought of as someone on the same level of his master. For enslaved women, the treatment was even worse. They were passed around and chosen by men as if they were simply items in a store. Usually, if a man noticed an enslaved woman and took particular interest in her, she would be delivered to him so he could do whatever he pleased with her (just as someone would do if they found a certain product they liked). This act was extremely violating and the fact that the woman had no choice in the matter and had to comply or face punishment made it worse. These violations are emotionally damaging to the woman as shown by the grief and shame expressed by a woman from Kunta s tribe when she tells him she is no longer a maiden of the Mandinka . The enslaved people of the time were treated no better than a piece of meat. They were stripped of their basic human rights and handled as if they were nothing more than ... • 42. War Takes Over Everything in Walt Whitmanв Ђ™s Poem, Drum Taps The overall theme in Walt Whitman s Drum Taps is about the way war consumes everything and monopolizes every facet of life; particularly the land the war is fought on. When analyzing the poem, the first stanza talks about the movement of war from the farms, the second stanza talks about the progression of warfrom the farm to the city. In stanza three this journey continues through the battlefield, through the halls of power and finally into the homes, moving from the public to private spheres of life. Throughout the entire poem there is an emphasized pulse of drums that beats within the lines. This pulse of drums resonates throughout the entire poem and prompts me to wonder how Whitman intended to utilize this mechanism. Furthermore, I want to uncover if the sounds of these drums is symbolic in some way, and if they are, then I wonder if this symbolism represents a positive view or negative view on war. My first interpretation is that these drums represent Whitman s negative perspective on war. I feel that the use of the pulse of drums throughout the poem acts as a mechanism that Whitman uses in order to discourage war. I feel that these sounds are symbolic of the dire news at the time that consisted of the battles. It seems that Whitman is addressing this pulse of drums in attempt to highlight the effect this war will have on the country. In this poem, I see the clear cry for battle as a cry by someone who is naГЇve and does not yet know what the ultimate cost of war ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Reading Response Reading Reflection Response As the American education system works to facilitate changes to improve the success of students, much attention has been given to the importance of reading instruction. The decline of reading scores across the country has called for researchers to investigate the reading process and decipher which methods best promote successful reading. Alan Kamhi (2009) stirred a variety of reactions after authoring The Case for the Narrow View of Reading, in which he argues that poor reading skills stem from the American educationsystem combining word recognition and comprehension into a single unit, and from a lack of acquiring content knowledge in other academic areas. Kamhi argues that teaching instruction in reading should focus solely on word recognition while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Catts argues that fixating solely upon decoding is not be the best option because while comprehension is dependent upon knowledge, it also a complex cognitive process that takes more than just knowledge to comprehend a text (2009). Looking at educational implications, Catts states that the education system should provide limited direct reading instruction while focusing on content area instruction with engaging activities that require active listening and participation (2009). Catts recommends that early reading materials and curriculum should be content rich expository and narrative passages, with the introduction of reading comprehension strategies after students have learned to successfully decode texts. Looking at implications for speech language pathology practice, Catts asserts that SLPs need to play a key role in working to early identify students at risk for developing reading disabilities; and then utilize dynamic assessment and response to intervention to monitor potential risk students. According to Catts, SLPs need to be aware of the need to for domain specific knowledge and complex processes included in reading and comprehension when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Are The Struggles In The Diary Of Anne Frank Finding joy in life can be a struggle when going through troublesome circumstances, but many are able to persevere through the support from our family and friends. The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett describes the life of a Jewish teenager, Anne Frank, while she is in hiding from an environment that is prejudiced to Jews. Throughout the story, it depicts the confined conditions Anne must endure in order to stay alive and away from the anti Semitic government. The Franks and Van Daans have enshrouded themselves in their annex for several months, but the Nazis tolerance for Jews has only gotten worse. The deafening, thunderous sounds of war finally takes a toll on Anne, and one day she wakes up screaming from a nightmare, immediately seeking the comfort of her father. I m trying. Really I am. Every night I think back over all of the things I did that day...I have a nicer side, Father... a sweeter, nicer side (247). Anne realizes that her actions to others have been unkind and inconsiderate. She understands that at times she may be insensitive, but she tries to make amends, clearly illustrating how much she has matured. Disclosing those thoughts to her father Whenever the stress and pressure of hiding gets to be too much, she knows she can always turn to her father. The connection between them is inextricable; Anne has spent the majority of her life spending time with her father, from the small study sessions they have to discussing their favorite books. Anne reveals all her concerns and sorrows to her father, and she relies solely on him to give her advice and listen to her problems. Spending time conversing with Mr. Frank soothes her worries, and she finds comfort in simply hearing his wise words. Anne sees her father as a pillar of strength, someone she can lean on when she is experiencing burdensome tasks. Anne perceives Mr. Frank as calm, logical, and supportive. For this reason, he becomes Anne s closest confidante, and she completely believes that he will not harshly criticize her actions, but rather give her carefully thought out guidance. As a result, the support from her father helps encourage her to stay hopeful for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marcion believed that the Jewish Scriptures only concerned the covenant between God and the Jews of Israel, and therefore was no longer valid for the Christian church. In his mind, these were two very separate Gods. When noticing that several of Paul s writings made mention of the God of Israel, Marcion claimed that those writings were not Paul s original texts, and should be considered counterfeit. Marcion s views of Paul s forged portions of his letters can be attributed to what many theologians today might call the Slippery Slope Argument. In this case, Marcion chose not to trust in the inerrancy of what God had spoken to Paul. Paul s writing s were flawed, or someone must have tampered with them. This lack of trust in inerrancy would ultimately allow Marcion to fall down a slippery slope , giving way to forsake other important Christian foundational truths. As his ideologies became more widespread, it became obvious that Marcion s views on creation were radically reinterpreted (or misinterpreted, better yet), as well as his opinions on the doctrines of incarnation and the resurrection. Ultimately, the church at large came to the conclusion that his doctrines contradicted several fundamental points in Christian doctrine. It forced the church to make a case for the value and status of the Jewish scriptures it had adopted as its own, and it prompted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. In March of 2009, the SEC filed a cease and desist order to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., for their actions in prior years. The corporation had purposely inflated their earnings throughout 2003 and 2004 in an attempt to meet Wall Street expectations and retain their investors. With the over inflation of their actual earnings, Krispy Kremewas able to present a higher earnings per share (EPS) to the public and therefore become more favorable among investors. In this case there are three primary transactions known as round trip transactions that occur. This meaning that the company was paying set amounts to franchisee s and then expecting them to return the payments in a prearranged manner. In doing so, this would allow Krispy Kreme to record extra pretax incomeand therefore inflate their profits. There were also reports of channel stuffing that surfaced from former employees once the SEC began investigating Krispy Kreme. According to the reports Krispy Kreme would send double orders at the end of the year in order to boost their sales and meet expectations. Those orders would then be returned and credited at the beginning of the next fiscal year. Price Waterhouse Coopers were the auditors at the time and would then face serious questioning as to why they never noticed the increased shipments at the end of each year followed by the credits when the orders were returned the next year. The internalization of the thin ideal denotes a key cause of such dissatisfaction (Dittmar). Thin ideal internalization is the degree to which a person will consciously accept a social definition of beauty, and in turn take action to parallel these values (Thompson and Stice). The mass media is viewed by countless body image experts as a particularly potent and pervasive root of thin ideal internalization because of the notoriously unattainable idea of perfection it portrays (Boone et al.). Young girls and women are plagued every day by images of pin thin, underweight women, not so subtle implications of the standard of attractiveness that they feel expected to meet, and are made to feel inadequate when they inevitably fail. People look down on her and despise her due to the reasoning that she voted illegally and took matter in to her own hands and was put into prison for it.
