The science of today is the technology of tomorrow. So says Edward Teller, echoing
his thoughts as a noted physicist that science isn t just the future, but indeed what
creates the future. But what about Mary Shelley? A noted romanticist, Mary Shelley
s views may have been a bit different from those of Teller. In fact, Mary Shelley s
first novel, Frankenstein, might just be the best example of her thoughts on the
matter. Throughout the novel, Shelley emphasizes the importance of scientific
responsibility, and is clearly against science playing the role of God. However, this
is not for any real religious purpose. Instead, Shelley uses science to express gradual
degradation of what she had viewed as the natural world that that she had treasured
during her time period, and the gradual destruction of natural beauty in the world,
using the novel and its characters to support her demonization of science in favor of a
more natural world. The terror of the scientific creation of Frakenstein contrasted with

One common theme between good and bad priests is that the vocation they were
called to never seems to completely leave them. This is a common theme in Silence,
by Shusaku Endo. In the beginning of the novel, the reader discovers that Ferreiera
apostatized, giving up not only his roles as a priest but his faith in Godas well.
Although Ferreira abandoned the priesthood and gave up shepherding the few
Catholics of Japan, he still continues to be useful to others, [which] was the one

a surprise. In the movie, All Quiet on the Western Front, the character, Paul Baumer,
enters the war as an innocent person; with no idea on the effects, it may have on
him. In the beginning of the movie Paul is shown as an innocent eighteen year old

The Battle of Okinawa was pretty brutal in itself. Soldiers were dying back and
forth; it was the most ghastly corner of hell... Japanese soldiers tactics were very
hostile and had no mercy. The battle took place at one of Japan s islands, Okinawa.
On the ground, it lasted 81 days beginning on April 1, 1945. The 77th Infantry
division was the first division of Americans to land on the Kerama Islands(tiny
islands on the west of Okinawa island). The Naval battle was a gruesome one, also.
Kamikazes sunk many US aircraft carriers and killed many soldiers. We watched

he is a wonderful study tool for me during exam week. My faithful study partner was
born in a small town, Bonn, Germany on December 16, 1770 to a family of
professional musicians. Beethoven learned violin and some other instruments from

It was a road block for the musical genius and it became nearly impossible for him
to perform again. Beethoven stopped creating new composition; he obviously was
very disappointed and became constantly more frustrated. It had been said that he
even wrote letters to his brothers telling them how he felt like it was an end of his

Wendy seems to bare the brunt of Peter s memory loss in the novel. It is almost a
surprise that Peter has not forgotten her sooner, and in the beginning of the
adventure it appears that he almost did. He constantly abandons them for adventure
during their flights to Neverland and he often forgets who they are when he returns.
Wendy comments, And if he forgets them so quickly...how can we expect that he
will go on remembering us . Peter has a hard time remember people and events, but

that Peter kills and then forgets about it. A Freudian psychologist might suggest that
