The L-shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks Essay
The L shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks
The narrator s views of social prejudice are conveyed through the experience of Jane the main
character.
My father and I hadn t said a word to each other when I went home for my things. He s told me to
go and I was going; he didn t care where and so why should I tell him?
The above opening quotation is from The L shaped Room written by
Lynne Reid Banks. It captures an insight into the attitudes of the time. The author mainly focuses
on reflecting the journey Jane faces through her unwanted pregnancy, coping with emotional
difficulties and the dilemmas that face her. I feel the novel made me sympathetic towards Jane, as
the novel kept me captivated; with many twists and turns and ... Show more content on

Yet these neighbours eventually draw her back to life.
At the start of the novel Jane realised it was morally wrong in her society to be pregnant but she
tries to be strong to admit the truth to her father:
I m pregnant I said. These two words shocked even me with their crudeness. I instantly wished I d
said the softer I m going to have a baby. The blunt statement of the biological fact had the same
after echoes as a slap across his face.
The writer has made me feel that Jane thought some weight would ease of her mind by being
strong and telling her father, as he may understand as she is the only child with no mother.
However the sharpness of the truth hits Jane at the same time as she admits the truth because she
realises she is in the situation and she is not generally stating something that will have no affect
on her. I think the dash reveals extra feelings, of how she now feels after admitting the truth but
in addition to this the sentence before and after the dash is a vivid contrast. Before the dash it
suggests what she said was simple and straightforward words but it compares the effect of the
words after the dash which shows the words are shocking. Echoes as a slap across the face shows
how forceful the words actually sounded.
This phrase is a simile which compares her words as being worse than a slap. In my opinion the
word choice of echoes expresses how the admittance of the truth must have been a

Surface Area To Volume Ratio
Single celled organisms are small meaning that their surface area is big compared to their
volume. These organisms have a large surface area to volume ratio which means that they can
obtain different substances by diffusion through their relatively large plasma membrane. The
substances have to diffuse only short distances so they can diffuse at a faster rate and meet the
organism s needs. Multi cellular organisms have a much smaller surface area to volume ratio.
Many of their cells are not in direct contact with their surroundings so they cannot solely rely on
diffusion to supply all of their organs with oxygen and nutrients, as the distance from their surface
to all cells is too far. Humans are multi cellular and have special surfaces for... Show more content

What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is a measure of the pressure exerted by the blood against artery walls. Blood varies
with heartbeat strength, age, blood volume, health and fitness. Blood pressure is measured as two
numbers, e.g. 120/80 these numbers represent systolic and diastolic the big number is systolic
which the blood pressure is during a heartbeat and the smaller number is diastolic which the blood
pressure in between heartbeats is. The numbers show pressure reading in mm of mercury.
How does blood pressure affect health?
High blood pressure can make blood vessels more likely to burst, and can cause strokes and
kidney damage. Low blood pressure can cause dizziness, fainting and poor circulation.

Manganese And The Role Of The Human Body
MANGANESE AND THE ROLE IT PLAYS IN THE HUMAN BODY
Introduction
Manganese is one of sixteen known minerals that are essential within the human diet (wardlaw).
Minerals, such as manganese, are considered essential to the diet of humans if their absence results
in physiological or structural abnormalities and their presence prevents disease/illness (wardlaw).
The body utilizes manganese primarily in energy metabolism and within the antioxidant systems
(wardlaw). Manganese is found primarily in parts of the body such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys
and bones (Ehrlich).
The Chemical Properties of Manganese
Manganese (Mn) is a member of the periodic family of transition metals. Transition metals have one
or more stable ions that do not have complete d orbitals. Manganese has the atomic number twenty
five, ie. the nucleus contains twenty five protons. Taking into consideration the abundance of
various Manganese isotopes, the atomic weight was found to be 54.9380amu.
Dietary Reference Intake
Manganese does not have a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) due to insufficient
information, however, the Food and Nutrition Board has set an Adequate Intake. The Adequate
Intake was formulated based on observed and experimentally determined approximations of
manganese by populations of good health status. In healthy adults, the AI for men is 2.3mg/day and
1.8mg/day for women (wardlow). The need for dietary manganese increases with pregnancy and
lactation (2.0 2.6 mg/day) (linus pauling).

Leonwood Bean. He obtained a list of nonresident hunters to establish his first client list for his

1967 when L.L Bean died, his mail order business had grown to $4.75 Million in annual sales,
the catalog was distributed to 600,000 customers, and employed 200 people. Since his grandson

Critical Issue 3 What information should Scott Sklar have available to help him arrive at a
demand forecast for a particular style of men s shirt that is a new catalog item? Alternative 1
Mr. Sklar will need all the rankings of the various shirts for the particular book this new shirt will
be included in. There will need to be a meeting held to discuss where they believe this new item
will fall within the other assigned shirt rankings while eliminating preconceived notions and
rules of thumb. If this new product is similar to another shirt style then careful consideration
needs to be taken to account for any steal in demand that this new shirt will have on any other
lines L.L. Bean currently offers. Alternative 2 If this new shirt is believed to be a unique item
and will have its own demand absent from the other products offered then a more separate
forecast of sales is needed. The next conceivable step would be to develop a unit sales projection
by forecasting unit sales per month. The use of the most recent past data available from a new
catalogue item will be the most beneficial in helping this statistical analysis in forecasting sales.
This will lead to a

5k Research Paper
When the horn blows, the adrenaline is already flowing and it feels good to finally get moving. All
the pent up energy finally gets released and channeled. The hours of training, the preparation, the
drive, all come down to this. Running a triathlon (swim, bike, run) or duathlon (run, bike, run) is
about what it takes to get to the starting line. Follow these steps and you ll be ready to stand at the
starting line for your first duathlon.
First, you have to identify a race. There are a variety of websites that provide a list (active.com, for
example). This is important because preparing for a 5K or 10K or 10 miler is not the same as a
multi sport event. You need the time to train not for one event (running) but two, so the ... Show

You still have a few things to consider. If you can, go pick up your race packet the day before
the race so you can get your racing bib, helmet number, and bike number. You can attach these so
you don t have to worry about it tomorrow. You can see the race route on line (usually), so if you
have time, drive the route so you can get a feel for the land (especially the bike course). You may
not realize how big some of those hills are by looking at a map, but if you drive the course, you
ll know what s coming the next day when you re actually riding the course during the race. The
night before the race make sure you go through pre race checklist to ensure you have everything.
Running shoes check, bike helmet check, bike cleats check, water bottles filled with water or
energy drink check, race numbers already mounted on helmet, bike, and racing belt check, bike
tires pumped to proper pressure check, bike ready for race check. Finally, you eat a good dinner
(nothing that will upset the stomach or make you feel bloated) and try to get to bed early.
Race day. The alarm goes off pretty early (between 4:00 to 5:00 a.m.), especially if you have to
drive to another city, but you re ready. Everything is loaded and ready. Maybe you eat a light
breakfast (I like bananas and toast) and drink something caffeinated. The roads are pretty quiet this

Transcontinental Railroad Thesis
Around the 1840 s, the western land was still fairy new to America with many Americans eager to
expand. Americans became extremely curious, wondering what lies in this forsaken land and
developed the proposal of manifest destiny. The term manifest destiny was a brief way to express
support for American expansion and the annexation of western lands (Mountjoy 12). Americans
were now longing for a path from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast and hoping to fulfill manifest
destiny. To achieve this Asa Whitney proposes the construction of a transcontinental railroad
(Streissguth 9). The transcontinental railroad was designed to link Omaha, Nebraska with
Sacramento, California (Stein 105). By creating the transcontinental railroad America would be
able to expand across the entire country and manifest destiny would be fulfilled. After a long
process On May 10, 1869 the transcontinental railroad was complete (Bain 9). Americans had access
across the entire United Statesand was able to complete manifest destiny. This accomplishment was
huge for America and provided happiness for an abundance of citizens. However, this happiness
was not achieved by everyone. Plains Indians were very agitated upon the completion of the
transcontinental railroad. The transcontinental railroad s tracks ran through a number of tribal
territories, bringing into conflict cultures that held very different views of the land and how it
might be used and lived on (Jawort). How were Plains Indians

come to Jerusalem on holiday with their nine children. While there the war broke out between the
Jews and Arabs and it became impossible to get back home. Their money was dwindling and the
banks were unable to transfer. They and many like them were faced with the problem of real
hunger. Mr. Mattar visited the bank daily, but nothing was coming through. A day came when they
finished the last of their food for breakfast. So Mr. Mattar gathered his nine children around him
and read to them God s promise of provision in the

The Sociological Debate Of Nature And Upbringing
The first sociological concept prepped for application to the silver screen is the debate of nature
versus nurture. The phrase nature versus nurture refers to the debate concerning the origin of
human behavior and whether it is determined by biology, the nature part of the equation, or
upbringing, the nurture part of the equation. Biology, in this case, comes down to a person s
genetic predisposition, with proponents claiming that a person is born with the behaviors they
will have for the rest of their lives and nothing will change that. Nature also connects to what
fetuses are exposed to in the womb, as Van Goozen et al. 1994 showed that, ...high levels of
testosterone contribute to stereotypically masculine traits such as aggressiveness and
competitiveness (Ferris and Stein 2016:97). Upbringing, in this case, relates to the environment
someone grew up in and what they were exposed to as they started learning about the world.
Evidence has been found to support either side of the debate, but no conclusive answer has been
reached yet. For the most part, it is believed that both nature and nurture play a role in how our
behaviors and identity develop. The second sociological concept that it up for discussion is the
social conflict theory. This term is used to describe the relationship Karl Marxsaw between between
the bourgeoisie, the owners of the means of productions or, anything that can create wealth (Ferris
and Stein 2016:25), and the proletariat, the workers who

1. How would you describe the conflict between Michael Eisner and the Weinstein brother, the two
board members (Disney and Gold), and Steve Jobs Was it functional or dysfunctional?
The functional conflict is defined as a confrontation between groups that enhances and benefits the
organization s performance while dysfunctional conflict is defined as any confrontation or
interaction between groups that harms the organization or hinders the achievement or
organizational goals.

3. To what degree do you think Iger s calmer and less confrontational approach to running Disney
has helped the company position itself to survive a major economic recession?
When Bob Iger succeeded Michael Eisner, he was considered a safe Mr. Inside who was a
competent operator and an unobjectionable personality.
Iger has steered Disney shrewdly since succeeding Michael Eisner. Where Eisner seemed forever
awash in controversies, Iger has chosen a shrewder, less confrontational path. It has helped Iger
build a stellar reputation on Wall Street, where the money barons don t like provocation.
His calmer approach helped repair key relationships that were strained during Eisners reign as
CEO. He believed in being productive instead of fighting wars and that gave a sign of relief to
the company. He was not too adherent to the company tradition rather he focused on being more
innovative. He encouraged risk taking as a means of innovation and development. He took risk to
expand Disney business adding broad mix of business to its portfolio like ABC family, ESPN and
Disney channels.
He bought Pixar for $7.4 billion in 2006, gaining unmatched creative resources as well as the close
counsel of Pixar founder Steve Jobs (whose estate is Disney s single largest shareholder). He

A National Counter Intelligence ( Ci ) Strategy
Three of the potential roadblocks associated with the implementation of a National Counter
Intelligence (CI) strategy that I believe are the most important rest within resources, information
and risk, outlined in Michelle Van Cleave s article Strategic Counterintelligence What Is It and
What Should We Do about It? The idea of a national level effort is not a new idea. The National
Security Act of 1947 provided basis of our intelligenceand CI functions. DoD naturally took the
mission of CI activity which fit within the DoD scope. Up and until the 1980s a series of failures
within the CI world, such as the failed hostage rescue in 1980 helped to place emphasis on the

The FBI along with other government agencies created a separate counterterrorism group called the
National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC). December 28, 2000 saw the creation of the National
Counterintelligence Executive (NCIX) appointment by the President Bill Clinton in response to
CIA mole Aldrich Ames. Initially the NCIX was to set policy for counterintelligence in areas of
counterespionage, information security and critical infrastructure protection. It was in this
position that Michelle Van Cleave as the National CI Executive outlined the need for a national
level system. A system that could coordinate and strategically apply a CI mission against a
foreign threat in a unified cohesive manner. The road blocks that Michelle Van Cleave outlined,
show a common issue within the U.S. government and also a picture of the CI effort in its
essence of trying to overcome an ever existing problem with expounded complexities. Michelle
Van Cleave wants to take CI to a clearer objective in the offensive realm of CI. To take the efforts
to the foreign state rather than waiting to react to the foreign state acting in the U.S. Within
Michelle Van Cleave s writing there is a strong sense given that we have a sharp tool to use, but
we have not taken full advantage of its capabilities. The use of CI provides a power to take

Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna And The Battle Of The Alamo
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born in Jalapa Veracruz Mexico, on February 21, 1794. He was
from a family of high social standing, as his parents were from Spain. He was a Mexican politician
and military leader who was President of Mexico eleven times from 1833 to 1855. He was a
disastrous president for Mexico, losing first Texas and then much of the current American west to
the United States. However, by far he was an important figure of his generation in the Mexican
history. He is remembered for two major conflicts, the Battle of the Alamo (1836) during the Texas
Revolution, and as a restored Mexican leader during the Mexican American War (1847).

My Goals For This Class Based On The Sensory And Diangelo...
My goals for this class based on the Sensory and DiAngelo reading were to focus less on grades
and more on understanding of the concepts, the second was to strive for intellectual humility by
accepting what I do not know and being open to the concepts I do not know, my last goal was to
learn from my reactions towards subject material the may have bothered me by journaling or
researching more about the topic. (Sensory DiAngelo, 2012) These goals I set for the class were
met at times, but at other times I feel that I did not meet these goals as well as I intended to. The
first goal to focus less on grades was mostly met. I found myself not caring about the grades, but
then when I had trouble with a concept or I found myself taking longer to understand what was
being asked of me in the homework assignment I began to feel like my mark would suffer or that
I would get a really bad mark, and although I never got a very terrible mark, I did find myself
focusing on it too much at times. I found it was easier to focus less on the grade at the beginning
and at the end of the semester, so I just need to work on managing my stress in the middle of the
semester to keep myself from nitpicking my grades. I did find that when I did have the time to
write out notes for the readings or even just having notes in the margins it helped me understand
and my grades then reflected that, so for the future I will have to remember to keep that in mind.
For the second goal, which was to strive

What did he say was the reasoning behind this belief? Do you agree with his views? Explain why
or why not.
Weston Smith says that he does not believe the concept of business ethics because Business Ethics
is no more than a label (Smith 2 21 18). I personally do not agree with his views, because business
ethics is much more than a label. Business ethics, while sometimes not followed in the case of
HealthSouth and other companies that commit fraud, is a way to keep companies in line. Without
business ethics, companies could basically create their own rules about how they do things, which
would mean it would be harder, or even impossible to catch fraud or other

process in order to always get a satisfactory result. These models organize the decision making
process into steps which identify a need, create a process to determine what will satisfy the need,
identify matches to the need, then help make a decision based on what best matches the need
(Robbins, 2005). In addition, these models try to shape moral and ethical decisions as well as
focus on the rights of individuals and social justice. Starbucks uses what they call the Ethical
Decision Making Framework to guide the models (Business Ethics Compliance, 2013). In order to
be transparent Starbucks posts the framework and all of the models on their website (Business
Ethics Compliance, 2013). If Starbucks managers simply follow this guidance, they will be
successful and Starbucks will continue to be a successful corporation.

Ulfric War Fair
Shackle, shackle, shackle! As hundreds of dark skinned slaves tied from feet to feet with metal
chains made these sounds. Their backs ache from digging, and planting as they cry from pain. As
the newest shipment of slaves moved along you can see through their teary eyes that they had fear.
Yet one slave enraged by the fact that he must be a slave decided that it wasn t fair.
Ulfric a young, skeletal looking boy at the age of 16 had just arrived in the slave town with tens
of other slaves as they were the newest shipment of workers. Taken from their homelands and their
families and forced to work on the plantations. Ulfric was assigned the role of plantation farmer,

And so on weeks by weeks the soldiers in the fortress started to die one by one. Than sooner than

While the soldiers suffered a cold death the slaves celebrated their victory with a toast of wine and
fine beer they had found in the cellars.
Hip Hip Hooray As multiple slaves yelled at once.
Many dankie to you Ulfric Someone says in Afrikaan language.
But the war was not over yet.
On the last day of December was the day that Ulfric gave the order. Burn the fortress walls down, lit
your arrows with fire and shoot at the main gate. He says in a very aggressive voice.
As the dry crumbled wood walls burned to the ground the slaves charged in with a bang as their
muskets fire all at once. They charged and battered every door, every room until they found the
mayor of the town.
I surrender, just don t shoot. As the plumped up mayor quickly says in a stuttering voice as he

Gendered Societal Expectations of Appearance and Their Effects Upon the Individual
It has long been generally accepted that we as humans are influenced greatly by the things that
surround our everyday lives. These things can include friends, family, co workers, the media and
even society as a whole. The society in which people live can play a huge role in how they view
themselves and how they view others. Over the years researchers have come up with many
theories as to how and why society has such a large influence on people. Now a days there are
appearance prescriptions for everything in our society. It is not good to be too fat, but it is not good
to be too skinny either. The way a person looks, dresses and acts is a large ... Show more content on

This study suggests that body dissatisfaction may mediate the relationship between overweight and
depression (Chaiton, 2009). It goes on to suggest that the relationship found between obesity and
depression is differentiated by gender because of the difference in societal expectations placed on
women and men (Chaiton, 2009). The study concluded that females experience body
dissatisfaction almost solely when they believe they are overweight, whereas both males who
believe that they are under or overweight experience body dissatisfaction which can in all cases
lead to some level of depression (Chaiton, 2009).
As the aforementioned study showed societal expectations concerning appearance can, and often
do, affect men just as much as they do women (Chaiton, 2009). Our society pushes men to be big,
muscular and manly. To certain degree the more muscular a man is the more attractive he
generally is within society. A study from an international journal regarding social behavior and
personality concluded that the attractiveness of a man is more important in determining social
desirability than the age of the man in question (Perlini, 2001). Comparatively the results of these
two studies add up to say that the attractiveness of a man is one of the main factors in determining
societal desirability and one of the biggest factors in being attractive is being muscular or strong.
This puts a lot of pressure on males to be concerned

A Research Study On Catalytic Promiscuity And The...
Catalytic promiscuity provides a starting point for the evolution of new enzymes. When a
secondary promiscuous activity becomes physiologically relevant, selection will favor genetic
changes that improve upon this promiscuous activity. When the ability to do both activities limits
growth, it is called an Inefficient bi functional enzyme. The Copley lab at the University of
Colorado at Boulder has found several genetic changes that increase fitness in a О”argC strain of
Escherichia coli BW25113 when growth is limited by an inefficient bi functional enzyme (ProA*).

In most cases, gene duplications are expected to be either selectively neutral or detrimental due to
the fitness costs of their maintenance, limiting the ability of a cell to maintain duplicated copies
long enough for beneficial mutations to occur (13). However, solutions to this problem have been
proposed based on the observation that most new enzyme activities closely resemble the original
activity of the enzyme.
Active sites of specialized enzymes often bind molecules that have some resemblance to their
natural or physiological substrates, although usually with much lower affinity (16). If an enzyme
can bind an unintended substrate and catalyze a secondary reaction that is physiologically
irrelevant, it is said to have catalytic promiscuity . If this secondary activity becomes
physiologically relevant by increasing fitness, selection will favor genetic changes that take
advantage of this new activity (11). The promiscuous activity of essential enzymes or those that are
constitutively expressed are usually the first to be recruited in the face of an environmental change
due to their active and selectable presence in the cell (11). Alternatively, mutations that cause
constitutive expression of non essential genes that can be subsequently recruited to produce
essential metabolites via their promiscuous activities have been documented (29, 5). In either case,

The Link Between The Term Pidgins Essay

PIDGINS IN SUDIA ARABIA Pidgin could be defined as a language that results from two
different people who are not able to speak a each other language so they can interact with and
understand each other.
This is situation can be a result of different circumstances like war, colonization, slavery and
international trade.
Some definitions of pidgins although are pidgins have no static definitions : Ferguson (1971)
refers to pidgins and creoles as simplified speech used to communicate with people who are
considered unable to understand normal speech, such as babies or foreigners. One of the essential
points that should be clarified in this context is the link between the term pidgins. This linguistic
variety is used in the contact between two speech communities from two different linguistic
backgrounds (Al Azraqi 2010; Al Moaily, 2008).Bresnan and Roberts (2008:272) state that pidgins
develop as auxiliary languages and thus lack native communities, at least initially .
Although the contact is between two languages, the vocabulary of a pidgin comes particularly from
one dominant language called the lexifier or superstrate , while the non dominant language is
called the substrate (Al Moaily, 2008; Bizri, 2009; Al Azraqi, 2010). Pidgins also do not have a
stable grammatical structure and they are usually used specifically among adults for a short
period of time (Al Azraqi, 2010). However creoles are classified as more

Theories Explaining Relationship Between Headquarters and...
Headquarters
How useful are theories of convergence, divergence and crossvergence in explaining the
complexities of relationships between headquarters and subsidiaries?
The various theories are providing a way for firms to understand cultural differences and address
these issues. This is achieved through utilizing these strategies in conjunction with one another to
comprehend the root causes of the problems and introduce solutions to them. When this happens, a
neutral culture is established that is taking into account numerous traditions and theories. These
different ideas are providing an avenue for dealing with the complex relationship that exists
between headquarters and their subsidiaries. This is the point that everyone can communicate and
collaborate on a host of issues (using a culturally neutral perspective). (Janssen 2009) (King 2009)
How is this theoretical framework similar to or different from other cross cultural management
frameworks which you have studied in this module?
The theoretical framework is focusing on using similar tools and tactics in order to reach out to a
larger group of individuals. This designed to enhance everyone s understanding of cultural attributes
and what are most relevant inside the workplace. It is at this point when select traditions can be
combined with the home country s practices and company policies to create a neutral environment.

March 3, 1974 a catastrophe occurred outside of Paris. Turkish Airlines flight 981 out of Paris

The cause for this was the locking pins that were supposed to lock in the latch on the plane
locked, but the latch had not latched onto the bar so the plane s cargo door was not locked and
due to the g force on the plane during takeoff and ascent into the sky the door was compromised.
This event caused a chain reaction of events to occur. After this happened the pressure from the
outside acclimated with the cargo bay which caused there to be too much of a pressure
differential between the cargo bay and the cabin. This caused the floor of the cabin to collapse,
which then broke all three of the control cables. With all the cables torn and broken the pilot lost

The Pros And Cons Of Air Compressor
Introduction
There are few things more frustrating to a car owner than a flat tire, especially when that flat tire
is discovered just before a big getaway. Remedying a deflated tire can be a chore, but when you
introduce an air compressor to the situation it becomes a whole lot easier.
What Is An Air Compressor?
An air compressor is a device which is used to compress and store air. When the time comes to
release the air into another object, the gas is pushed into its new home with immense force, which
is what makes air compressors so useful when it comes to inflating a car tire in a timely manner.
However, the uses of an air compressor extend far beyond the realm of automobiles. Owing to their
ability to convert electric energy into kinetic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Cartman Car Air Compressor is a heavy duty yet relatively inexpensive air compressor
designed for those who must inflate a couple of tires at a time.
Pros
Powerful
When it comes to sheer power, you re going to struggle to find a better air compressor than this. It
comes fitted with an extra strength motor, which allows for complete inflation in half the time of
the average air compressor.
Quiet
Powerful motors often create quite a bit of noise pollution, but that is not the case with the Cartman
Car Air Compressor. Despite the incredible strength of its motor, it is almost entirely silent when in
use.
Cons
Possibly Too Demanding
The above average strength of this air compressor is great. That is, of course, if your car can
handle it. If your car isn t particularly powerful, you may run into a bit of trouble. Multiple users
of the Cartman Car Air Compressor have claimed that it resulted in blown fuses in their vehicles.

Lean And Six Sigma
Introduction
Efficiency and effectiveness are two key terms in business, no matter the industry a company
activates in, as measuring firm strategy and performance has become more and more critical
nowadays. All organizations seek to achieve both and this requires a whole range of tools and
resources. Efficiency relates to the degree to which an organization uses resources optimally in
order to provide its services (Ala, Carol, Joy, Aziz, 1993, p. 39), while effectiveness measures the
extent to which it provides appropriate services (Ibidem). Furthermore, being efficient means doing
things right . Being effective means to do the right things (Roberto, Carlo, Roland, 113, p. 429). It
is therefore quite likely that a company cannot do both simultaneously, and here the concepts of

Archaeology And The Dead Sea Scrolls
During the video Archaeology and the Dead Sea Scrolls, it considers ancient secrets that were
discovered in Judean caves found in Palestine1. The Dead Sea Scroll that was found contained
what archaeologists for over 50 years have been trying to prove. Archaeologist have been trying
to prove if the stories that were spread around were true. This information that was the grave and
vital information that Father Roland Devoe took with him when he passed away, which
consisted of what these Dead Sea Scrolls pertained to. At first, there were ten caves that only
contained bits and pieces of this information; however, overtime, there ended up being a total of
seven scrolls that all related to the same information meaning1. After listening to what was
found and the information regraded in the Dead Sea Scrolls, I feel that it is extremely important
to share this information, even more so today. First, if passed along, it would show that all of
Roland Devoe s hard work was not for nothing. Through is perseverance and his hard work, we
can now learn more through these findings and what occurred so many years ago. Secondly, these

The Road Not Taken And Robert Frost Comparison Analysis
Imagine being outside with the colorful leaves falling to the ground in warm, comfy clothes and hot
chocolate in a mug. Often times poets use nature and sensory detail to inspire their writing and
engage their audience with a mental connection. One can compare and contrast Robert Frost s The
Road Not Taken to Emily Mottley, Annijah Collins, and McKenna Faychak s Seasons Changing by
using specific details from each poem. When interpreting the The Road Not Taken and Seasons
Changing, one can justify that the differences are their poetic structures and making different
choices, while at the same time recognize that the similarities are that each use nature images,
references to Autumn, and an abundant amount of detail to paint a picture for the reader. To begin
differentiating, one can first analyze the use of poetic structure in The Road Not Taken in contrast
to Seasons Changing through rhyme scheme, stanzas, and rhymepattern. The authors use different
ending rhyme schemes in their poems. For example, Frost uses the structure ABAAB exemplified
by the words from stanza 2: fair, claim, wear, there, same (Frost 6 10), while Mottley, Collins, and
Faychak incorporate the rhyme scheme of a coupling pattern by two lines rhyming with eachother
using the words: brown, down, weather, together, cold, old, cuddle, and couple (Mottley, Collins
and Faychak 1 8). Correspondingly, Frost has five lines in each of his four stanzas, while Mottley,
Collins, and Faychak have

Essay on Eugenics
The roots of eugenics can be traced back to Britain in the early 1880 s when Sir Francis Galton
generated the term from the Greek word for well born . He defined eugenics as the science of
improving stock, whether human or animal. According to the American Eugenics Movement, today
s study of eugenics has many similarities to studies done in the early 20th century. Back then,
Eugenics was, quite literally, an effort to breedbetter human beings by encouraging the reproduction
of people with quot;good quot; genes and discouraging those with quot;bad quot; genes.
(www.eugenicsarchive.org) According to Merriam Webster, the modern day
definition of eugenics

At the same time, cloning could operate as a form of positive eugenics, increasing the number of
births of babies with excellent health and high intelligence.
One thing that many people disagree upon is whether or not eugenics and genetic cloning is
ethically right or wrong. On one hand, it could eliminate children being born with life threatening
diseases by forewarning parents of potential medical problems. It is known that hemophilia,
albinism, and certain structural abnormalities are inheritable. Family gene maps, called pedigrees,
can help families with serious diseases avoid having children with the same diseases through
genetic counseling, and, increasingly, prospective parents can be tested directly for the presence of
undesired genes. (Prothero)
Another possible use of genetics could be the production of healthy organs. For example, heart
disease is one of the top causes of death in the United States. Scientists predict that they will
someday be able to clone healthy heart cells and inject them into damaged areas of the heart to
cure defects. There is also a possibility that doctors will be able to take healthy cells and tissue
from a patient s body and use them to create organs. This would eliminate the need for organ donor
waiting lists. People would no longer be facing early death because there is not a healthy heart or
other organ available to them.
At the same time, some people question if it is morally right to, in terms, play god . Some go

The German National Soccer Team Essay
Upon first thought, traditions can provide a sense of comfort and can therefore be hard to break.
They are something individuals can fall back on in times of distress and often offer a sense of
community. When individuals go against these traditions, however, there are frequently
consequences due to cultural norms. For a fictional character like Victor Frankenstein, his
oppositions come from his own conscience and originates after attempting to play god by creating a
murderous monster, something society would deem inexcusable. On the contrary, Luther the
Reformer went against numerous traditions of the catholic church, the biggest organized religious
group of his time. He was excommunicated from the church who opposed his beliefs, but as a
result, he formed a new religion with millions of followers today. Erik Erikson, and similarly, the
German national soccer team, were highly criticized by their respected communities after
embracing a new path. Throughout all these examples, each case has produced opposition due to
cultural norms. Although the consequences of breaking tradition can be either good or bad, one
thing is for certain, the act of breaking tradition is always going to be met with opposition, whether
it be internal or societal.
Through the act of breaking tradition, the fictional character Frankenstein faced rather extreme
consequences from his actions. Victor Frankenstein was driven by his desire to go above and
beyond the limits of the scientific discovery of

Future Counseling Assessment
To ensure that all possible clients of all walks of life are successfully benefiting from the counseling
profession, advancement in the assessment field should be of a primary concern for present and
future counselors. It is understood and respected that a multitude of counselors vary in the
foundations of their theoretical framework and collectively not all counselors participate in
assessment with their clients, but as the counselingprofession continues to grow the demand of
expansion is critical. According to Balkin Juhnke (2014), counselors may need to note that
although psychological assessment is legally in a professional turf war, we need to remember that

A Brief Note On Death And Dying Project

Death and Dying Project
Every culture has their own way to deal with the dying and dead. Some like to bury their dead,
some will cremate, and others will just leave the body in the open. Every culture has their own
special and specific way to do things. Some might mourn and others will celebrate.
In Vietnam when a person is about to die family comes and visits, this is the moment of silence.
The olds son or daughter would then bend over to hear the persons last dying words. At this time
the oldest member of the family would then suggest a new name for the person, because it is bad
luck to keep the same name that you had when you where alive. Vietnamese men usually... Show

The funeral would normally be held three days after the person had died. On the day of the
funeral, friends and family would have a memorial dinner. Then, on the ninth day, when the soul
is believed to leave the body, a special church service and dinner are held. Fourteen days after the
person has died, the soul is said to depart for the other world, and a service and dinner party are
again held. At every one of these parties, a glass of vodka covered by a piece of black bread is
left for the deceased. This would be the opposite of the traditional Russian custom of breaking
black bread when meeting someone for the first time. Traditionally the person s body would lay
untouched and uncovered for the three days until the burial; however, cremations are becoming
more popular because of how inexpensive they are.
People would wear weeds, or drab clothing in black, to prevent the dead from returning. Covering
the head in a black kerchief and wearing black continues for 40 days after the death. People also
cover mirrors, stop watches, and take the TV from the room where the body lies in wait. When
the body is carried to be buried its carried with its legs extended forward and done so that no part
of the body touches the house on its way out, because of the fear that the dead will return to their
home and take someone with them.

Summary Of To My Dear And Loving Husband By Anne Bradstreet
The life of a Puritan woman, from a modern perspective, was a very simple one. They cleaned,
cooked, sewed, mothered, and tended to the husband. There weren t many other options for a
woman in those times and that society. It was either be a wife/mother, nun, or a fallen woman.
Anne Bradstreet chose to be a wife/mother, and unintentionally, the earliest US poet.
The themes of her poems are romantic; however because of her status as a Puritan woman, even in
her own personal writings, she was restrained to her time. As a wife, she was considered an
official lady, the moral compass that Puritan society looked up to: because of this she was limited
to what erotic activities she could perform with her husband. Knowing this, her writings were
probably expected to reflect her status and reflect the time in which she lived, and they do, to an
extent. Although Bradstreet never thought that her poems would be published or seen by the
public she still wrote them in such a way that they couldn t be considered/taken as blatantly sexual
or immoral, in a type of code for instance. One such poem that demonstrates this type of code is, To
My Dear and Loving Husband. Romance during those times and in Puritan society wasn t exactly
how we view romance nowadays. To the Puritans marriage was secondary love; their First love was
to God which for them was true love. The main reason behind the act of sex was to procreate,
rather than being for pleasure. Now a fallen woman

The Pros And Cons Of The Monarch Butterfly
They classify many species of animals and living organisms. The monarch butterflies are not
essential to the ecosystem, so many do not care that they are near threatened. This is a serious
problem because monarchs represent so much more than most humans see. Lafontaine and Jeffery
P. Crolla write various status reports about living creatures. The Monarch butterfly is a symbol of
natural history conservation. Recent disasters and human pressures at the overwintering sites have
made the Monarch susceptible to a catastrophic decline in numbers that could potentially push the
North American population of the Monarch to the brink of extinction (Lafontaine and Crolla). The
quote mentions that the monarchs are a part of history. It also mentions... Show more content on

They do not have the resources they need in order to reproduce. The bare minimum resources
they need is milkweed and the proper daylight and warm temperature. They are barely making it
by in society today and there are statistics to prove that they are hurting. A University of
Minnesota professor, Karen Oberhauser, says the population is less than half of the population
from the previous year (Gregory). She has been studying monarchs for over 30 years. The
Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network stand behind Oberhauser s observation. This means that
their whole species has been cut in half in just one year. It is frightening to think that the species
could get cut in half again this year if nothing were to change. Animals are classified by how
common they are around the world. The monarch is now the seventh most common species this
year when it was usually second or third most common in previous years. This makes perfect
sense because the population is cut in half so their commonality has been more than doubled.
The places that monarchs have been observed is also decreasing. Places include specific sites
where monarchs gather and preserves throughout North America. Monarchs have been spotted at
only forty eight of the sixty eight sites that are observed in the past year. Twenty of the sites have
no sight of monarchs. The monarchs are categorized into different types of species, and the
number of species has dropped from eighty five to sixty eight this year (Gregory), so this means
that some species have already died off. When people say that the monarch population is not close
to being endangered, it is a false statement because some of the species are already extinct. The
entire monarch population is not near becoming extinct because there are so many types, but the
ones that are already extinct get overlooked because many monarchs look

Health Problems Of High Fructose Corn Syrup
It todays society, health problems are becoming the norm. Adult obesity rates now exceed 35
percent in four states, 30 percent in 25 states and are above 20 percent in all states (Trust for
America s Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation). Some of these major health problems can
be prevented such as some diabetes, obesity that is not genetically inherited, as well as a reduced
insulinproduction. To do this we need to start by looking at the foods that we eat, as well as the
FDA s foodstandards. High Fructose Corn Syrupis in almost every processed food out there. This
additive has replaced cane sugar because it is cheaper and easier to produce, even though is
poses commonly know health risks like liver failure, obesity, and a reduced insulin production,
and lesser known concerns such as mercury that are not spoken of that often. The federal
government needs to get rid of High Fructose Corn Syrup in our processed foods because of the
known health risks in both the production and consumption. We all know that High Fructose
Corn Syrup is in our food but we don t know what it truly is and its hidden health risks it carries.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is mad of two main things: fructose and glucose. Fructose is a sugar
that is found in many fruits and vegetables, and glucose is a sugar that helps our bodies retain
energy. Fructose is a tough energy source for the body to use due to it has to be processed through
the liver. It is also more lipogenic, or fat producing,

How To Train Your Dragon Analysis
How To Train Your Dragon , a 2010 film directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, uses the
film codes to enhance the audience s understanding of the film. How To Train Your Dragon tells the
tale of a hapless young Viking named Hiccup, who befriends a dragon named Toothless. Together,
they teach the island of Berk about acceptance and overcoming differences. While producing the
directors used the film codes to add interest and understandingto the film, enhancing the overall
enjoyment of the film. The character codeallows to better understand the personality of and have a
deeper connection with the characters. Representational code benefits the audienceby letting them
decipher what the character represents. Meanwhile, the technical code uses film making equipment
to give more information about the characters, scenes and the film in its entirety. The character
code enables the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the characters.
The character code enables the audience to better understand the characters by offering insight into
the personalities of the characters. The character code requires the audience to analyse the character
s speech to better understand the character s personality, actions and behaviour. This is done
through the examination of the accent, tone, pitch, pace and volume of the character/s speaking.
This is evident in the Hiccup Initiation Ceremony Confession Scene in which Hiccup spits out, I m
not one of them. . He states this loudly, in a low pitch, slowly spitting out the words in a chilling
manner with a cold and harsh tone. Therefore, the audience interprets this as Hiccup displaying
himself as being different to the other Vikings in the manner of behaving in an amiable fashion
towards dragons. The audience subsequently comes to the conclusion that Hiccup has a
compassionate, understanding and altruistic personality, denoting his willingness to overcome bias
and promote difference. The character code is also apparent in the Opening Scene where Stoick
harshly declares, What are you doing out? Get inside! . Stoick speedily demanded this thunderingly,
in a low pitch with an accusing and demanding tone. As a result of this, the audience understands
Stoick to be tough, powerful

  • 2. The L-shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks Essay The L shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks The narrator s views of social prejudice are conveyed through the experience of Jane the main character. My father and I hadn t said a word to each other when I went home for my things. He s told me to go and I was going; he didn t care where and so why should I tell him? The above opening quotation is from The L shaped Room written by Lynne Reid Banks. It captures an insight into the attitudes of the time. The author mainly focuses on reflecting the journey Jane faces through her unwanted pregnancy, coping with emotional difficulties and the dilemmas that face her. I feel the novel made me sympathetic towards Jane, as the novel kept me captivated; with many twists and turns and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet these neighbours eventually draw her back to life. At the start of the novel Jane realised it was morally wrong in her society to be pregnant but she tries to be strong to admit the truth to her father: I m pregnant I said. These two words shocked even me with their crudeness. I instantly wished I d said the softer I m going to have a baby. The blunt statement of the biological fact had the same after echoes as a slap across his face. The writer has made me feel that Jane thought some weight would ease of her mind by being strong and telling her father, as he may understand as she is the only child with no mother. However the sharpness of the truth hits Jane at the same time as she admits the truth because she realises she is in the situation and she is not generally stating something that will have no affect on her. I think the dash reveals extra feelings, of how she now feels after admitting the truth but in addition to this the sentence before and after the dash is a vivid contrast. Before the dash it suggests what she said was simple and straightforward words but it compares the effect of the words after the dash which shows the words are shocking. Echoes as a slap across the face shows how forceful the words actually sounded. This phrase is a simile which compares her words as being worse than a slap. In my opinion the word choice of echoes expresses how the admittance of the truth must have been a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These organisms have a large surface area to volume ratio which means that they can obtain different substances by diffusion through their relatively large plasma membrane. The substances have to diffuse only short distances so they can diffuse at a faster rate and meet the organism s needs. Multi cellular organisms have a much smaller surface area to volume ratio. Many of their cells are not in direct contact with their surroundings so they cannot solely rely on diffusion to supply all of their organs with oxygen and nutrients, as the distance from their surface to all cells is too far. Blood pressure is measured as two numbers, e.g. 120/80 these numbers represent systolic and diastolic the big number is systolic which the blood pressure is during a heartbeat and the smaller number is diastolic which the blood pressure in between heartbeats is. The numbers show pressure reading in mm of mercury. How does blood pressure affect health? High blood pressure can make blood vessels more likely to burst, and can cause strokes and kidney damage. Low blood pressure can cause dizziness, fainting and poor circulation. • 4. Manganese And The Role Of The Human Body MANGANESE AND THE ROLE IT PLAYS IN THE HUMAN BODY Introduction Manganese is one of sixteen known minerals that are essential within the human diet (wardlaw). Minerals, such as manganese, are considered essential to the diet of humans if their absence results in physiological or structural abnormalities and their presence prevents disease/illness (wardlaw). The body utilizes manganese primarily in energy metabolism and within the antioxidant systems (wardlaw). Manganese is found primarily in parts of the body such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys and bones (Ehrlich). The Chemical Properties of Manganese Manganese (Mn) is a member of the periodic family of transition metals. Transition metals have one or more stable ions that do not have complete d orbitals. Manganese has the atomic number twenty five, ie. the nucleus contains twenty five protons. Taking into consideration the abundance of various Manganese isotopes, the atomic weight was found to be 54.9380amu. Dietary Reference Intake Manganese does not have a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) due to insufficient information, however, the Food and Nutrition Board has set an Adequate Intake. The Adequate Intake was formulated based on observed and experimentally determined approximations of manganese by populations of good health status. In healthy adults, the AI for men is 2.3mg/day and 1.8mg/day for women (wardlow). The need for dietary manganese increases with pregnancy and lactation (2.0 2.6 mg/day) (linus pauling). ... Critical Issue 3 What information should Scott Sklar have available to help him arrive at a demand forecast for a particular style of men s shirt that is a new catalog item? Alternative 1 Mr. Sklar will need all the rankings of the various shirts for the particular book this new shirt will be included in. There will need to be a meeting held to discuss where they believe this new item will fall within the other assigned shirt rankings while eliminating preconceived notions and rules of thumb. If this new product is similar to another shirt style then careful consideration needs to be taken to account for any steal in demand that this new shirt will have on any other lines L.L. Bean currently offers. Alternative 2 If this new shirt is believed to be a unique item and will have its own demand absent from the other products offered then a more separate forecast of sales is needed. The next conceivable step would be to develop a unit sales projection by forecasting unit sales per month. The use of the most recent past data available from a new catalogue item will be the most beneficial in helping this statistical analysis in forecasting sales. This will lead to a ... • 7. Transcontinental Railroad Thesis Around the 1840 s, the western land was still fairy new to America with many Americans eager to expand. Americans became extremely curious, wondering what lies in this forsaken land and developed the proposal of manifest destiny. The term manifest destiny was a brief way to express support for American expansion and the annexation of western lands (Mountjoy 12). Americans were now longing for a path from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast and hoping to fulfill manifest destiny. To achieve this Asa Whitney proposes the construction of a transcontinental railroad (Streissguth 9). The transcontinental railroad was designed to link Omaha, Nebraska with Sacramento, California (Stein 105). By creating the transcontinental railroad America would be able to expand across the entire country and manifest destiny would be fulfilled. After a long process On May 10, 1869 the transcontinental railroad was complete (Bain 9). Americans had access across the entire United Statesand was able to complete manifest destiny. This accomplishment was huge for America and provided happiness for an abundance of citizens. However, this happiness was not achieved by everyone. Plains Indians were very agitated upon the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The transcontinental railroad s tracks ran through a number of tribal territories, bringing into conflict cultures that held very different views of the land and how it might be used and lived on (Jawort). • 10. The Sociological Debate Of Nature And Upbringing The first sociological concept prepped for application to the silver screen is the debate of nature versus nurture. The phrase nature versus nurture refers to the debate concerning the origin of human behavior and whether it is determined by biology, the nature part of the equation, or upbringing, the nurture part of the equation. Biology, in this case, comes down to a person s genetic predisposition, with proponents claiming that a person is born with the behaviors they will have for the rest of their lives and nothing will change that. Nature also connects to what fetuses are exposed to in the womb, as Van Goozen et al. 1994 showed that, ...high levels of testosterone contribute to stereotypically masculine traits such as aggressiveness and competitiveness (Ferris and Stein 2016:97). Upbringing, in this case, relates to the environment someone grew up in and what they were exposed to as they started learning about the world. Evidence has been found to support either side of the debate, but no conclusive answer has been reached yet. For the most part, it is believed that both nature and nurture play a role in how our behaviors and identity develop. The second sociological concept that it up for discussion is the social conflict theory. This term is used to describe the relationship Karl Marxsaw between between the bourgeoisie, the owners of the means of productions or, anything that can create wealth (Ferris and Stein 2016:25), and the proletariat, the workers who ... Compromise is a good backup strategy that conflicting parties can fall back on if their attempts at problem solving are unsuccessful. 3. To what degree do you think Iger s calmer and less confrontational approach to running Disney has helped the company position itself to survive a major economic recession? When Bob Iger succeeded Michael Eisner, he was considered a safe Mr. Inside who was a competent operator and an unobjectionable personality. Iger has steered Disney shrewdly since succeeding Michael Eisner. Where Eisner seemed forever awash in controversies, Iger has chosen a shrewder, less confrontational path. It has helped Iger build a stellar reputation on Wall Street, where the money barons don t like provocation. His calmer approach helped repair key relationships that were strained during Eisners reign as CEO. He believed in being productive instead of fighting wars and that gave a sign of relief to the company. He was not too adherent to the company tradition rather he focused on being more innovative. He encouraged risk taking as a means of innovation and development. He took risk to expand Disney business adding broad mix of business to its portfolio like ABC family, ESPN and Disney channels. The idea of a national level effort is not a new idea. The National Security Act of 1947 provided basis of our intelligenceand CI functions. DoD naturally took the mission of CI activity which fit within the DoD scope. Initially the NCIX was to set policy for counterintelligence in areas of counterespionage, information security and critical infrastructure protection. It was in this position that Michelle Van Cleave as the National CI Executive outlined the need for a national level system. A system that could coordinate and strategically apply a CI mission against a foreign threat in a unified cohesive manner. The road blocks that Michelle Van Cleave outlined, show a common issue within the U.S. government and also a picture of the CI effort in its essence of trying to overcome an ever existing problem with expounded complexities. Michelle Van Cleave wants to take CI to a clearer objective in the offensive realm of CI. • 14. My Goals For This Class Based On The Sensory And Diangelo... My goals for this class based on the Sensory and DiAngelo reading were to focus less on grades and more on understanding of the concepts, the second was to strive for intellectual humility by accepting what I do not know and being open to the concepts I do not know, my last goal was to learn from my reactions towards subject material the may have bothered me by journaling or researching more about the topic. (Sensory DiAngelo, 2012) These goals I set for the class were met at times, but at other times I feel that I did not meet these goals as well as I intended to. The first goal to focus less on grades was mostly met. I found myself not caring about the grades, but then when I had trouble with a concept or I found myself taking longer to understand what was being asked of me in the homework assignment I began to feel like my mark would suffer or that I would get a really bad mark, and although I never got a very terrible mark, I did find myself focusing on it too much at times. I found it was easier to focus less on the grade at the beginning and at the end of the semester, so I just need to work on managing my stress in the middle of the semester to keep myself from nitpicking my grades. I did find that when I did have the time to write out notes for the readings or even just having notes in the margins it helped me understand and my grades then reflected that, so for the future I will have to remember to keep that in mind. For the second goal, which was to strive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I personally do not agree with his views, because business ethics is much more than a label. Business ethics, while sometimes not followed in the case of HealthSouth and other companies that commit fraud, is a way to keep companies in line. Without business ethics, companies could basically create their own rules about how they do things, which would mean it would be harder, or even impossible to catch fraud or other ... Starbucks understands that if people have inaccurate perceptions, they can make poor decisions. (Goldstein, 2006). So, they have created guidelines that both direct employee behavior, as well as shape corporate perception. Because Starbucks understands perceptions can affect decisions, the models help standardize the decision making process in order to always get a satisfactory result. These models organize the decision making process into steps which identify a need, create a process to determine what will satisfy the need, identify matches to the need, then help make a decision based on what best matches the need (Robbins, 2005). In addition, these models try to shape moral and ethical decisions as well as focus on the rights of individuals and social justice. Starbucks uses what they call the Ethical Decision Making Framework to guide the models (Business Ethics Compliance, 2013). Gendered Societal Expectations of Appearance and Their Effects Upon the Individual It has long been generally accepted that we as humans are influenced greatly by the things that surround our everyday lives. These things can include friends, family, co workers, the media and even society as a whole. The society in which people live can play a huge role in how they view themselves and how they view others. Over the years researchers have come up with many theories as to how and why society has such a large influence on people. Now a days there are appearance prescriptions for everything in our society. This study suggests that body dissatisfaction may mediate the relationship between overweight and depression (Chaiton, 2009). It goes on to suggest that the relationship found between obesity and depression is differentiated by gender because of the difference in societal expectations placed on women and men (Chaiton, 2009). The study concluded that females experience body dissatisfaction almost solely when they believe they are overweight, whereas both males who believe that they are under or overweight experience body dissatisfaction which can in all cases lead to some level of depression (Chaiton, 2009). As the aforementioned study showed societal expectations concerning appearance can, and often do, affect men just as much as they do women (Chaiton, 2009). Our society pushes men to be big, muscular and manly. To certain degree the more muscular a man is the more attractive he generally is within society. A study from an international journal regarding social behavior and personality concluded that the attractiveness of a man is more important in determining social desirability than the age of the man in question (Perlini, 2001). Comparatively the results of these two studies add up to say that the attractiveness of a man is one of the main factors in determining societal desirability and one of the biggest factors in being attractive is being muscular or strong. When a secondary promiscuous activity becomes physiologically relevant, selection will favor genetic changes that improve upon this promiscuous activity. When the ability to do both activities limits growth, it is called an Inefficient bi functional enzyme. The Copley lab at the University of Colorado at Boulder has found several genetic changes that increase fitness in a О”argC strain of Escherichia coli BW25113 when growth is limited by an inefficient bi functional enzyme (ProA*). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In most cases, gene duplications are expected to be either selectively neutral or detrimental due to the fitness costs of their maintenance, limiting the ability of a cell to maintain duplicated copies long enough for beneficial mutations to occur (13). However, solutions to this problem have been proposed based on the observation that most new enzyme activities closely resemble the original activity of the enzyme. Active sites of specialized enzymes often bind molecules that have some resemblance to their natural or physiological substrates, although usually with much lower affinity (16). If an enzyme can bind an unintended substrate and catalyze a secondary reaction that is physiologically irrelevant, it is said to have catalytic promiscuity . If this secondary activity becomes physiologically relevant by increasing fitness, selection will favor genetic changes that take advantage of this new activity (11). The promiscuous activity of essential enzymes or those that are constitutively expressed are usually the first to be recruited in the face of an environmental change due to their active and selectable presence in the cell (11). Alternatively, mutations that cause constitutive expression of non essential genes that can be subsequently recruited to produce essential metabolites via their promiscuous activities have been documented (29, 5). This is situation can be a result of different circumstances like war, colonization, slavery and international trade. Some definitions of pidgins although are pidgins have no static definitions : Ferguson (1971) refers to pidgins and creoles as simplified speech used to communicate with people who are considered unable to understand normal speech, such as babies or foreigners. One of the essential points that should be clarified in this context is the link between the term pidgins. This linguistic variety is used in the contact between two speech communities from two different linguistic backgrounds (Al Azraqi 2010; Al Moaily, 2008).Bresnan and Roberts (2008:272) state that pidgins develop as auxiliary languages and thus lack native communities, at least initially . Although the contact is between two languages, the vocabulary of a pidgin comes particularly from one dominant language called the lexifier or superstrate , while the non dominant language is called the substrate (Al Moaily, 2008; Bizri, 2009; Al Azraqi, 2010). Pidgins also do not have a stable grammatical structure and they are usually used specifically among adults for a short period of time (Al Azraqi, 2010). However creoles are classified as more ... Lean And Six Sigma Introduction Efficiency and effectiveness are two key terms in business, no matter the industry a company activates in, as measuring firm strategy and performance has become more and more critical nowadays. All organizations seek to achieve both and this requires a whole range of tools and resources. Efficiency relates to the degree to which an organization uses resources optimally in order to provide its services (Ala, Carol, Joy, Aziz, 1993, p. 39), while effectiveness measures the extent to which it provides appropriate services (Ibidem). Furthermore, being efficient means doing things right . Being effective means to do the right things (Roberto, Carlo, Roland, 113, p. 429). When interpreting the The Road Not Taken and Seasons Changing, one can justify that the differences are their poetic structures and making different choices, while at the same time recognize that the similarities are that each use nature images, references to Autumn, and an abundant amount of detail to paint a picture for the reader. To begin differentiating, one can first analyze the use of poetic structure in The Road Not Taken in contrast to Seasons Changing through rhyme scheme, stanzas, and rhymepattern. The authors use different ending rhyme schemes in their poems. For example, Frost uses the structure ABAAB exemplified by the words from stanza 2: fair, claim, wear, there, same (Frost 6 10), while Mottley, Collins, and Faychak incorporate the rhyme scheme of a coupling pattern by two lines rhyming with eachother using the words: brown, down, weather, together, cold, old, cuddle, and couple (Mottley, Collins and Faychak 1 8). It is known that hemophilia, albinism, and certain structural abnormalities are inheritable. Family gene maps, called pedigrees, can help families with serious diseases avoid having children with the same diseases through genetic counseling, and, increasingly, prospective parents can be tested directly for the presence of undesired genes. Scientists predict that they will someday be able to clone healthy heart cells and inject them into damaged areas of the heart to cure defects. There is also a possibility that doctors will be able to take healthy cells and tissue from a patient s body and use them to create organs. They are something individuals can fall back on in times of distress and often offer a sense of community. When individuals go against these traditions, however, there are frequently consequences due to cultural norms. For a fictional character like Victor Frankenstein, his oppositions come from his own conscience and originates after attempting to play god by creating a murderous monster, something society would deem inexcusable. On the contrary, Luther the Reformer went against numerous traditions of the catholic church, the biggest organized religious group of his time. He was excommunicated from the church who opposed his beliefs, but as a result, he formed a new religion with millions of followers today. Erik Erikson, and similarly, the German national soccer team, were highly criticized by their respected communities after embracing a new path. Throughout all these examples, each case has produced opposition due to cultural norms. They cleaned, cooked, sewed, mothered, and tended to the husband. There weren t many other options for a woman in those times and that society. It was either be a wife/mother, nun, or a fallen woman. Anne Bradstreet chose to be a wife/mother, and unintentionally, the earliest US poet. The themes of her poems are romantic; however because of her status as a Puritan woman, even in her own personal writings, she was restrained to her time. As a wife, she was considered an official lady, the moral compass that Puritan society looked up to: because of this she was limited to what erotic activities she could perform with her husband. Knowing this, her writings were probably expected to reflect her status and reflect the time in which she lived, and they do, to an extent. Although Bradstreet never thought that her poems would be published or seen by the public she still wrote them in such a way that they couldn t be considered/taken as blatantly sexual or immoral, in a type of code for instance. One such poem that demonstrates this type of code is, To My Dear and Loving Husband. Romance during those times and in Puritan society wasn t exactly how we view romance nowadays. The Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network stand behind Oberhauser s observation. This means that their whole species has been cut in half in just one year. It is frightening to think that the species could get cut in half again this year if nothing were to change. Animals are classified by how common they are around the world. The monarch is now the seventh most common species this year when it was usually second or third most common in previous years. This makes perfect sense because the population is cut in half so their commonality has been more than doubled. The places that monarchs have been observed is also decreasing.
