Examples Of American Crime Obsession
American Crime Obsession
With crime shows like Making a Murderer, the Killing, Luther, and The Fall within reach of every
person with a Netflix account, it makes it pretty easy to assume most people have, or will, watch a
crime show at some point in their life. Americans are so obsessed with crime and the killers that
drive it, which is why we are drawn towards the fictional crime tales. We have been apart of so
many involuntary crimes and horrible events which shape our country, yet we continue to take
these awful events and seek out more information and news about it. The real reason we ve
become so obsessed with true crime is because of the desire that people have to learn more about
the legal system, as well becoming intrigued by watching fictional crime shows. ... Show more

Molly Fosco, a writer and a lifestyle blogger, says Most of us have never even been in a
courtroom, let alone a murder trial, and our knowledge of the legal system doesn t encompass
much more than a few episodes of Law and Order or The Good Wife. Until we actually go into a
courtroom or experience a murder trial, our knowledge about the subject remains limited. By
hearing and learning about different crime scenarios through the news or other forms of
communication, it gives us a way to educate ourselves on the legal system without actually
becoming involved with it. Along with that, the public s appetite for stories about a flawed criminal
justice system is growing and this makes the people more hungry for any sort of news they can get
their hands on about the legal system

Edward Hopper, An American Realist Painter
Edward Hopper was an American realist painter born in 1882 in New York. After studying art and
many journeys, he had trouble getting famous and put on the art world map. But finally, in 1933, a
first installation is dedicated to him at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. His
works are mainly inspired by his journeys, trips to different places and the solitude of the American
in the twentieth century. Nighthawksis his most famous piece of art (Laura Herail, blog). After
researching and looking at many of his paintings, this artwork portrays sadness and yet it is not
a sad picture. It could be something enticing and yet charming about anonymous diners. The lack
of domesticity offering a relief what can be the full comfort of home. It may be easier to give
away to sadness here than in a cozy living room with wallpaper and framed pictures. Home often
appears to have betrayed Hopper s characters, something has happened there that forces them out
into the night and on to the road. The 24 hour diner is a sanctuary for those who for some reason
or another have failed to find there place in the normal world of relationships or community.
Hopper s ability to portray solitude comes from his own familiarity with it. He lead comfortable
middle class childhood as a son of a merchant, yet inside Hopper often felt a little bit awkward
like an outsider. Hoping for a while to be an artist and yet his parents insisted he trains in
commercial art to keep afloat financially. He hated

Edgar Allan Poe Biography
Edgar Allan Poe Life Work
Yaneris Cruz
ASA College Edgar Allan Poe is considered one of the most important writers of all time in
American Literature. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston Massachusetts.
Most of his work is characterized because of the darkness and grief readers can interpret through
his work. Poe s life was tough and complicated. Since his early childhood, his life was filled with
sad moments. Such as the dead of his parents and the dead of his wife Virginia. It can interpret
that the tragic success during his lifetime deeply influenced his writing. Readers can find an
example of how his life influenced his writing. The poem of Anabel Lee and Alone can be
associated with the grief, depression and loneliness encounter during his life and after the death of
his wife Virginia and during his infancy.
Edgar Allan Poe life was traumatic since his childhood. The death of his parents during his early
childhood was the beginning of a series of traumatic events that mark his life in a negative way.
Events that he reflects. in his writing. According to his poems Alone from childhood s hour, I

The Problem Of Cell 13, By Jacques Futrelle
Everybody has something they love and are committed to. Unquestionably, in the short story, The
Problem of Cell 13, by Jacques Futrelle, Professor Augustus S.F.X. Van Dusen is not an exception.
The Thinking Machine, as he is colloquially known as, is challenged by associates Dr. Charles
Ransome and Mr. Alfred Fielding to escape from a high security prison cell using only his mind.
Being as passionate as he is about logic, he accepts. In the story, Futrelle conveys the human
experience of commitment by using descriptive literary devices, and emphasizing the dynamic
character Dr. Charles Ransome. One indisputably evident theme infused into The Problem of Cell
13 is if you believe in something, you should go to great lengths for it.... Show more content on

Another example on page 249 reads, You might treat me precisely as you treated prisoners under
sentence of death, and I would leave the cell (Futrelle). This shows that The Thinking Machine is
claiming to be able to think his way out of a cell in order to document his claim. Because he is so
passionate about logic, he is willing to spend a week in this cell, and eventually succeeds at
escaping. Therefore,
Dr. Charles Ransome is a dynamic character. In the story, Dr. Ransome is a scientist who strongly
believes The Thinking Machine cannot escape a high security prison. An early attribute Dr.
Ransome carries is his doubtfulness giving rise to uncertainty ( Doubtful ). In fact, on page 249,
Dr. Ransome reasons, No man can think himself out of a cell (Futrelle). Although The Thinking
Machine says he can escape, Dr. Ransome still doubts the possibility of The Thinking Machine
living up to his name and thinking his way out of a cell. A conversation takes place on page 249
between The Thinking Machine and Dr. Ransome: You might treat me precisely as you treated
prisoners under the sentence of death, and I would leave the cell.
Not unless you entered it with tools prepared to get out, said Dr. Ransome. (Futrelle)
Again, Dr. Ransome questions The Thinking Machine by arguing he could only escape prison
using tools. He plainy does not believe The Thinking Machine s theory of anything being possible.
Because Dr. Ransome is a dynamic character, he

The Access Of Equity Finance Through Crowdfunding
From almost the beginning, the idea of community and local based Slow Money ideals being
served through crowdfunding was acknowledged here in Southern California. Our Slow Money
SoCal founding members were working against a conservative legal backdrop and a sprawling
suburbia that made local investing and the community building it entails all the more difficult. In
our early days, while we measured the idea of crowdfinancing still serving the Slow Money
Principles, we decided it was a legitimate sounding of our regional voice. Today, the access to
equity financethrough crowdfunding is just another opportunity to continue to serve ways to
catalyze capital while exploring the inherent tension between the virtual world and the visceral
character of a place based investing.
We were broached by Kiva, the grandfather to all technology based crowdfinancing in 2013. Slow
Money SoCal had worked without much success, for an approach to local investment during its
first year and was ready to consider another way. Still reticent about the rules and regulations that
served to inhibit a local investing story, we chose to sign on as an early Kiva Trustee hoping to get
our feet wet as we continued to develop our more down to earth, place based approach. We
endorsed our first Kiva loan in March 2014.
In those early days of Slow Money SoCal, though some of us were comforted by the Kiva
partnership and its legal sanctions, some thought the partnership was a distraction. If we were busy

Malnutrition As Defined By Groark Song
Malnutrition as defined by Groark Song (2012) is a state of nutritional imbalance most often related
to undernutrition. They go on to explain that malnutrition is both when a child is eating too little or
too much and not getting essential nutrients in early childhood, which can lead to obesity (Groark
Song, 2012). The short term effects of malnutritionare more noticeable in early childhood
education settings in the form of behavioral and mental health issues. A poorly nourished child
may become disruptive or extremely withdrawn in the school setting, which can negatively affect
their learning as well as the learning of their classmates (Groark Song, 2012). Micronutrient
deficiency is a major effect of malnutrition. Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is associated with poor
mental and motor development, poor cognition and school achievement (Prado, Dewey, 2014). The
long term effects of malnutrition become more evident later on in childhood. These effects
manifest themselves more in the child s physical and cognitive development. One of the major
effects of malnutrition is childhood obesity. Obesity, if untreated, is known to lead to serious
health problem later in life affecting the physical, cognitive and affect development of children and
adults. Another significant effect of malnutrition is growth failure, as defined by Groark Song
(2012) describes a growth pattern that is abnormal and is the result of taking in too few calories.

SIDS Physical Factors
A combination of physical and sleep environmental factors can make an infant more vulnerable
to SIDS. These factors may vary from child to child. Physical factors Physical factors associated
with SIDS include: Brain abnormalities. Some infants are born with problems that make them
more likely to die of SIDS. In many of these babies, the portion of the brain that controls
breathing and arousal from sleep doesn t work properly. Low birth weight. Premature birth or
being part of a multiple birth increases the likelihood that a baby s brain hasn t matured
completely, so he or she has less control over such automatic processes as breathing and heart rate.
Respiratory infection. Many infants who died of SIDS had recently had a cold, which may

The 1900 Hurricane Book Review
It is difficult to even imaging how serious hurricanes can be. Category 5 hurricanes are the
strongest storms. Winds howl at more than 155mph. (33) They can be more than 300 miles from
one side to another. (6) In this nonfiction book, Wood begins with a description of Hurricane
Katrina. He describes how it was one the worst storms in U.S. history. It devastated the Gulf
coast with 140 mph winds ripping apart buildings and tearing down power lines. The main
damage to New Orleans was due to big holes breaking through the levee and Lake Pontchartrain s
water flooding the city. Some areas were 20 feet deep, which left people stranded on their roofs
for days before help arrived. The book continues by describing hurricanes and what causes them.
Hurricanes are storms with strong, swirling winds up to 200 mph and can be more than 300
miles wide. These high winds are often destructive to cars, trucks, power lines, buildings and even
roads. Hurricanes need heat and moisture to form. Then, the Earth s rotation gives the winds a
twist. (14) If the hurricanes stay near warm water, it has plenty of energy to stay strong. However,
many hurricanes weaken as they reach land, since there is no warm water on land. The authors
explained that there are four stages of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To close the book, the author discussed the future of preparing for hurricanes. Early warning
systems are now in place to broadcast alerts to seek shelter. Better satellites take pictures and alert
weather forecasters who then watch all the steps of each storms path. Special computer programs
called models, help forecasters guess where the storm will make landfall. They also show how
strong a hurricane will be and the amount of damage people can expect.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Patton s Speech
This is a rhetorical analysis of Lieutenant General George S. Patton s Speech to the Third United
States Army. It was a very successful speech given to the troops of the United States Third Army
in 1944 before the invasion of France. After examining the genre, purpose of this speech, General
Patton s audience, and how General Patton used ethos, logos, and pathos we can see why this
iconic speech was so successful.
First we will take a look at the genre of this piece. The genre is very important in literature
because they are like guidelines that outline what your piece should have in it. For example if
someone wanted you to write a speech you would look at examples of other speeches and see how
they get a point across. You would not for instance look at a series of papers under the Lab Report
genre for ideas on how to write a speech. When General George S. Patton was tasked with speaking
in front of thousands of troops the speech genre was the appropriate way to address so many people.
Secondly this speech is very focused on a purpose, to motivate the listener, give confidence, and
hope. General George S. Patton motivates by taking in consideration for his audience and
exploiting it. The listeners are all inexperienced soldiers who are scared of going into combat for
the first time. Patton already has a reputation of being a hardcore successful, seasoned general.
Everyone looks up to him and he uses lines such as That s why Americans have never lost and
will never lose a war. to motivate people. When the soldiers of the Third Army hear Patton talk
about how All real Americans love to fight it motivates all these very patriotic people because
they link their love of country to loving the fight. Another great is example is when Patton states
And we have the best team we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit and the best
men in the world. Why, by God, I actually pity these poor bastards we re going up against. . Patton
is making everything sound great saying that they have the best of everything, that they can t lose,
and even that they have it so good he actually feels sorry for the people they are going up against.
These examples are textbook motivation and it really makes Patton

Essay on Judicial Activism Versus Judicial Restraint
Judicial Activism Vs. Judicial Restraint The debate between Judicial Activism and Judicial
Restraint really grabbed my attention. Judicial Activism and Judicial Restraint are two different
ways to interpret the constitution and its laws. Both interpretations have their own strengths and
weaknesses, which is why it is so hard to come to a final decision of which is acceptable and
which is not (in most cases). While at the debate I didn t realize how many cases have boiled
down to these two concepts. There have been many cases ended up being decided by both
interpretations. I believe Judicial Activism should be removed from the Supreme Court. The
Original definition of Judicial Activism is defined as a philosophy of judicial decision ... Show more

Stare Decisis plays a large role in Judicial Restraint. Stare Decisis is sticking to an established
ruling that was handed down by past judges or jurors. A form of judicial restraint is called the
political question doctrine, and it is significant in understanding this interpretation of the law. The
political question doctrine is when a court acknowledges that the constitution is violated but does
not decide to act. There are plenty of examples of Judicial Restraint throughout our history but the
one that stands out the most in my mind is Gore Vs. Bush. In this case the Florida supreme courts
methods of recounting the presidential ballots was considered and ruled as having violated the
Equal Protection Laws which is under the fourteenth amendment in a presidential election.
Everyone seems to know that something wrong was done, but no one really understands what
happened. Before this debate I didn t realize that this was an example of Judicial Restraint. And
this is why I caint agree with either interpretations of the law. Both of these interpretations are
ways to go around the laws already set in stone. I believe that there should be some type of law
created to protect the constitution. I do not agree with either interpretations and I believe that they
are both wrong. These are examples of flaws in the constitution that should be dealt with. As I
listened to this debate I realized and understood more and more

Bleep ! The Decline Of Civility By Kathleen Parker
Rudeness effects everyone at some point in their everyday lives. What is rudeness? How can
rudeness effect people? What are the causes of rudeness? Many people do not realize how much
rudeness can effect you mentally and emotionally. In an article titled Bleep! The decline of
civility Kathleen Parker questioned whether or not our civility can be saved in today s society.
Rudeness happens every day and sometimes you may be the one being rude to another without
even realizing it. There s no reason to be rude to anyone, and said rudeness can be prevented.
Rudeness is a lack of manners that has become more common in life today. In fact according to an

In the article Bleep! The decline of civility the author Kathleen Parker states, Let your
Conversation be without Malice or Envy, for tis a Sign of a Tractable and Commendable
Nature: And in all Causes of Passion admit Reason to Govern. In a previously cited article by
Sandra Walston, the author gives some insight as to how we can fix our blatant incivility.
Walston states that our society needs a redo on how we talk to each other. People have to figure
out how to speak to others without ...doing permanent damage to the relationship... (Walston)
Although The Price of Incivility is an article written about the workplace, the solutions to
rudeness in it can be applied to everyone s lives. Ms. Porath and Ms. Pearson, authors of the
article, write, reward good behavior. Most people wouldn t think about rewarding any random
person in their everyday lives, but a simple Thank you! coupled with a handshake or hug goes a

the connection to drugs. Biederman stated, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity (ADHD) boys treated

Indigenous Rights and Land Claims Around the World Essay
With globalization and colonization taking over almost the entire known world, native tribes who
are indigenous to their lands are losing control of the lands that their people have lived in for ages
to the hands of foreign colonizers who claim the land as their own. Now, indigenous people all
around the world are struggling to reclaim the lands and rights that were taken away from them
through non violent social relations with national governments and large corporations.
Anthropologists have recorded how indigenous people across the globe attempt to create relations
with national governments to reclaim rights and lands that they once had before the colonization of
their ancestral homeland. Compiled in this essay are three examples of... Show more content on

Their struggle is soon brought to court where they requested to be considered citizens of the Nisga
a nation, rather than being considered citizens of Canada. Eventually, a treaty is signed between
them and the federal government so the Nisga a people can claim sovereignty over their ancestral
homeland, while still being confined within the nation state. This article helps answer the question
of this essay by showing the effects of globalization through colonization on aboriginal people s
identities. Since their land had been under colonization, the Nisga a found it absolutely necessary to
fight for their national identity to claim autonomy from the colonizers. By having the right to call
themselves Nisga a citizens instead of Canadian citizens, their national identities have immensely

When the guys girl gets out of the car they attempt to rape her, that shows how weak they
actually are. Many times, in society young people think they have it all under control, they have
it figured out even though they don t. During these teen phases, they try to experience many
things. such as drugs, drinking, and sexual exploration and become involved in various
mischievous activities. It is about the coming of adulthood. It is no longer trying to be like
them, but copying one. The three friends are not as bad as they pretend to be. Boyle gives them
an opportunity to rape, but got interrupted because they wouldn t have done it anyways they
were to scared. The author symbolizes the water as transition and spirituality, the lake is
symbolized as the elusive badness the boys want so badly. The narrator notices that none of
them are as bad as they try to act. After that night the narrator realizes he cannot make it in that
life, rather the narrator wants to go to the safety and security of his home and parents.
Throughout the story many bad decisions were being made because they couldn t handle
themselves whether they were drunk or sober and it caused a lot of trouble and problems for
these young men. We sometimes forget to make the right decision and sometimes is hard to make
the right decision when you are hanging out with the wrong people and wrong set of minds of
wanting to be bad or revel because other people are doing so. Greasy

My Experience At The United States Of America
When I was little, around six years old, some of my acquaintances fantasised of being princesses
while others dreamed of being police officers or knights. My notion was not as preposterous as
theirs, but almost as out of reach; I wanted to study in the United States of America, better said I
wanted to move there. Growing up in a relatively small town, where everyone seemed to share the
same principles once they got past their childhood virtuous, I felt stuck.
Once again, I was a dreamer, forever stuck in the what ifs scenarios of my own imagination.
Hence, I was not contented, I wanted to experience the world outside of those city walls, the cities
I saw and heard about on TV, I wanted to experience a different world, because I simply reckoned
that everything would get better once I left. As I got older, those dreams, of moving aboard and
starting all over, only got more insane. On some days, where I felt like my world was breaking
apart again, I came home, crying and begging my mom to take a job aboard. To be honest, I had
yet to learn about visa restrictions and all the social security benefits that Germany, as compared
to international standards, had. In other words, my mom quickly made me realise that I had to
wait for College to finally leave the city behind. This, nevertheless, did not stop me from
divulging it to everyone around me. While my classmates always reaffirmed me as dewy eyed,
adults simply labeled it as the guileless state of reverie.

Richard II Tragic Hero Essay
Shakespeare really wrote tragedies of great heights and earned standard category. His one of the
best creation Richard II is a historical play rather being a tragedy. The history play is usually
distinguished especially by its political purposes from other kinds of plays.shakespeare emphasized
the political issue mainly in this play. He tried to show the conflict between Richard and
Bolingbroke and finally the rebellion. The play is consequently written not about the down fall of
its hero but around the chronological stages by which Bolingbroke threatens, captures, and retains
the crown. Throughout a tragedyplay readers suffer with the hero and feel sympathy for the hero
but it does not happen with Richard II. So the play cannot be claim as a tragedy.
From the point of view of Harold Bloom, it can be mentioned that Richard II is ... Show more

According to my point of view, Richard II is not a complete tragic hero. He did not have the
qualities of a real tragic hero though he was from a high ststus and died at last. He was not a
good person, a foolish king, a weak and unwise politician, irresponsible self centered person. He
misused his power, increased taxes to accomplish his luxury expenses, took wrong decision,
murderer of his uncle, in a word, he was an unworthy leader.
From the earlier scene Richard II is devoid of for anyone. Through the quarrel between
Bolingbroke and Mowbray, Richard takes advantage to get rid of the crime of murder his uncle
Gloucester.Rather trying to solve the conflict he tried to hide his crime by banishing them.
Richard s inability to make peace between Bolingbroke and Mowbray is sometimes seen as an
indication of his weakness proposed by Tillyard, Campbell, and Ribner. (Elliott. History and

The Tragedy Of Ralph Schneider
Time; it can be a terrifying force. Many might become fixated with time, however they end up
wasting it in an unexpected way. This is a story of one of those time addictions. The story begins
in the year 1929, a young boy named Ralph Schneider is born in the town Augsburg on Bobinger
street. He was the perfect German, he had bright blonde hair and sea blue eyes. Ralph grew up
in a small house with his loving parents, Helga and Gerhard along with his sister Ilse, who was
born 8 years after him. Ralph had a simple life with no obstacles standing in his way, his father
was making a respectable amount of money from his job as a tailor. Ralph s life contained only a

He explained to Ralph he had no choice but to go, because the party would come after their family.
Ralph understood, however he couldn t believe he had so little time left with his father. On that
final night they had together Ralph s father told Ralph a story. The story was of a boy much like
himself, whose father had also left for war. This boy was given a watch from his father to keep until
he got back from war. He explained how the boy looked at the watch every day to see the passing
time go by and think that he was one minute closer to reuniting with his father once again. The story
went on about how the boy never lost hope, and his father eventually came home. Then they lived
happily ever after. Unfortunately, I am reluctant to inform you that Ralph s story does not end in a
happy ending.
The next day Ralph woke up to a damaged watch on his wrist; immediately he sprinted into the
living room only to find his little sister and mother crying. His father was gone, and instead he
had a watch. The next couple days were tough, his mother closed the tailor shop and they were
living on the army salary. After two weeks since his father s departure, the old watch that Ralph
had received stopped working. Ralph freaked out, he needed to see the time moving on. His family
did not own any other watches and could not afford to buy one, forcing him into a tough situation,
he had to do something. Without thinking he went to fetch his two friends Lisa

The Flood Of 1955 And Hurricane Katrina
Natural disasters affect thousands of lives each year, and have the potential to drastically alter a
country/state and its people. Because of the destructive force Mother Nature can bring about, it is
imperative to have mitigation plans set up in populated areas to protect people and reduce the
structural damage to buildings, houses, etc. There are some mitigation plans, however, that have
been unsuccessful, resulting in catastrophic disasters. Best examples of these are the Connecticut
Flood of 1955 and Hurricane Katrina. Even though these are two different types of natural disasters;
the level of destruction, preparedness, mitigation strategies, and the overall aftermaths had profound
and lasting changes on the areas inflicted, mainly Connecticut and Louisiana. In August of 1955,
Connecticut suffered one of its worst flooding disasters in the history of the state. The flood was
caused by two hurricanes passing through the region around the same time, bringing several
inches of rain. According to the state s website, on August 11 12, Hurricane Connie produced four
to six inches of rain throughout Connecticut. One week later, on August 18 20, Hurricane Diane
produced another 10 to 20 inches of rain (ct.gov). As a result, heavy rains permeated the ground
and rivers, causing them to overflow. Most of the damage came from small rivers and streams that
did not have proper flood control as compared to major rivers such as the Connecticut River. The
hardest hit areas were the

The Hippocratic Oath, By Atul Gawande
Medicine is a science of healing, but also an art. It takes intelligence in the sciences as well as
precise skill in the art of medicine to heal successfully. In the Hippocratic Oath, Hippocrates
highlights the importance of passing on the tradition of practicing medicine, maintaining respect for
patients, and preserving humility within themselves. Modern day practice of this oath involve
patient s stories. Rita Charon in her article What to do with Stories? The sciences of Narrative

After ensuring the preservation of medicinal practices and knowledge, the consequences of it are

personal effects of ego, sexual interest and human tendency to gossip. Doctors must be able to
admit to inability in order to make sound judgements. This would mean diagnosis to the best of
their ability, and nothing beyond their ability: I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the

their societal power or fall prey to their desires: I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining
free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations (Hippocrates).
The oath further protects the patient s emotional wellbeing by restricting the doctor from

The Road To Democracy Was More Difficult For France
The road to democracy was more difficult for France than for England because they still had
many people who wanted to keep a Monarchy and keep France ruled by a king and queen or by
military rule. This made the road to Democracy more difficult for France because it stirred up
conflicts between the people in France who wanted democracy and the people in France who
wanted to keep the monarchy. The first main conflict that happened was with the creating of the
Third Republic. This was a government the French created after the Franco Prussian war. The
reason this stirred up conflict was because during the 1880 s and 1890 s, the Third Republic was
threatened by the monarchists, clergy and aristocrats who wanted to keep the monarchy, and army

Overtime, during the 1600 s and 1700 s many missionaries and fur trappers and other French
colonists came to Canada and lived with the Native Americans. Some of the French who came
even intermarried with some of the Native Americans. Eventually, Britain came to power and
took control of Canada in 1763 after defeating France in the French and Indian war. After Britain
took power, many English speaking people settled into Canada. Most of these English speaking
people who settled were from Great Britain and some were loyalist Americans. During Britain s
control of power in Canada, Britain s parliament eventually split Canada into two new
providences. The two providences were Upper Canada and Lower Canada. Today Upper Canada
is now Ontario and Lower Canada is now Quebec. The reason for Britain s parliament splitting
Canada into Upper Canada and Lower Canada was because of conflict between two religions.
The two religions were Roman Catholic and Protestant. Both religious groups wanted to have a
bigger voice in controlling their own affairs which led to conflict between the two religions. After
both religions kept pressuring Britain to give them these powers, Britain finally gave in and split
Canada into two providences in 1791. This now became Upper Canada and Lower Canada.
The people who lived in the colony of Upper Canada were people made up of an English speaking
majority.

Examples Of Moral Decay In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, depicts the corrupt lifestyle in the 1920 s. The theme of
moral decay is addressed numerous times through out the novel by characters actions and
expressions. Narrated by Nick Carraway, The Great Gatsby leans you into the unseen area of the
jazz age. Published in 1925, Fitzgerald explains how criminal doings, lying, and adultery cause
the consistent moral decay through out the novel. Moral decay was first explained by criminal
actions as a result of several events that took place. One event is the illegal usage of drug stores to
sell alcohol during the prohibition. This is performed by Jay Gatsby; a rich man that everyone is
obscured to how he obtains his great deal of wealth. Fitzgerald clarifies the wonder people had
about Gatsby when he states, Somebody told me that he killed a man once. It s more that he was
a German spy during the war. You look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody s looking at him.
I bet he killed a man. (43). The fictitious rumors about Gatsby are all made up, but because of

Sherlock Holmes By Conan Doyle
Sherlock Holmes has assumed a reality few fictional characters have. Holmes is known for his

to solve different cases. Sherlock Holmes is the main character of four novels and more than sixty
short stories by Sir Conan Doyle (1859 1930).(please find the exact amount needs to be hard fact)
Doyle used inspirations from his reality to help strengthen his description of the fictional detective
series of Sherlock Holmes. The author used actual descriptions, mostly of late Victorian London.
Experiences from the accurate time period made Holmes s stories come to reality.
Author Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Conan Doyle
s father is Charles Doyle, an alcoholic who would spend much of his later life in a metal
institution. Charles married Mary Foley Doyle, daughter of an Irish doctor, described as
attractive, lively teacher. She loved literature and according to biographer Andrew Lycett,
beguiled her children with story telling. Conan moved to London as a medical school graduate, in
1891. Conan Doyle had been heavily influenced by Dr. Joseph Bell, whom he met at the
Edinburgh Infirmary and whose diagnostic powers amazed his students and colleagues. Doyle said

Bell was noted for drawing broad conclusions from minute observations. . Another person that

Physical Evidence Collected At A Crime Scene
Physical evidence collected at a crime scene provides much needed information for a criminal
investigator to build his or her case. Since the inception of the Innocence Project in 1992, more
than 300 wrongfully convicted people have been exonerated after DNA testing established that
the crime for which he or she had been convicted was committed by another
(Innocenceproject.org, n.d.). Advances in forensic science makes possible the means to
individualize other items of evidence that point to the person or persons responsible for a crime.
Dr. Edmond Locard formulated the principle that is the foundation of forensic science: Every
interaction leaves a trace. A drop of sweat or a flaked off skin cell could be all that is needed to
corroborate a defendant s presence during the commission of a crime. Origins and History The
earliest documented example of doctors making the connection between cause of death and
crime can be found in a book titled HsiDuan Yu ( The Washing Away of Wrongs ) that dates back
to 1248. In this book, doctors describe establishing a case of drowning by the presence of water
in a subject s lungs and identifying a death by strangulation through observing the characteristic
ligature marks on the throat and crushed cartilage in the neck (Nickell Fischer, 2014, p. 6). This
same book recounts a case in which insect activity was used to solve a murder: in 1235, a victim
was murdered by hacking, and Tzu ordered the men in the village to put their

Upon achieving power in 1933, Hitler and the Nazi state began to implement increasingly severe
measures aimed at segregating and ultimately removing the Jewish people from Germany and
eventually all of Europe. Hitler s further achievement was to create the new man. However,
meanwhile the creation of Hitler s new man was giving Germany a sense of destiny, the Jewish life
was being constricted and erased. But what exactly was this idea of a new man? The ultimate
attitude behind this new achievement was to further purify the Aryan race. One of the first steps
towards purity were the Aryan passports, but these were just the beginning of a much broader effort

of the Reich, which were only individuals classified as being of German or related blood ,

The pineal gland is a pea sized organ placed at the center of the brain that played an important
role in Descartes philosophy (Lokhorst, 2005). He regarded it as the main seat of the soul and
the place in which all of our thoughts are formed (Lokhorst, 2005). Additionally, Descartes
affirmed that the pineal gland played a critical role, because it was involved in sensation,
imagination, memory, and the causation of bodily movement (Lokhorst, 2005). Descartes
believed that the pineal gland was suspended in the middle of the ventricles, which are fluid
filled cavities in the center of the brain (Lokhorst, 2005). However, this was proven to be false by
another philosopher, Aelius Galenus (Lokhorst, 2005). Secondly, Descartes believed that the pineal
gland was full of animal spirits, surrounded by several small arteries (Lokhorst, 2005). Again,
Galenus proved this to be false, because the pineal gland is surrounded by veins, not arteries
(Lokhorst, 2005). Perhaps Descartes assumptions regarding the pineal gland were mistaken, due to
what was known at that time. Either way, Galenus had already explored the truths and function of
the pineal gland before

The Pen Of Thomas Paine
These are the times that try men s souls. Rarely have there been as powerful and as meaningful
words as these from the pen of Thomas Paine. Paine was one of the many men who experienced
the harsh effects of the war. The war was deadly, more deadly than ever could be expressed
through words. The extremes of the war were felt by all, although some felt the cruelty the war
more than others. Men from many different walks of life and men from different sides of the war
all had their souls tried by this war. Some of the men, who joined the Colonial Army, could not take
these trials once the going got tough. When the war started in the summer of 1776, the Army was
doing well with the victory of Boston behind them, and with the excitement of defending Manhattan
in the future, many men joined the Colonial Army. When the Americans lost New York, started to
retreat through New Jersey, and the weather turned rainy, the number of men in the Colonial Army
started to drop significantly. Men were deserting or waiting until their enlistments were up and then
would not re enlist (McCullough 249). These numbers dropped even farther once the weather
turned poor when the rain and snow came (McCullough 81). This shows precisely what Paine
meant by his second statement in The American Crisis, The summer soldier and the sunshine
patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country... All the men of the war were
suffering, but the men who stuck it out even in the hardest of

Religion In The Starry Night
The Starry Night, one of the many paintings by Vincent van Gogh, is by far one of his most well
known artworks. When looking at this painting, the viewer is submerged in color and motion as
the eye travels around the iconic landscape. Not only is it visually pleasing, it has emotion and
spiritual ties to the artist himself. Van Gogh s lack of evangelical ministry as well as his dwindling
mental state was a force of reconciliation within his artwork, and the outcome was magnificent. The
Starry Nightwas painted as a manifestation of religious and spiritual expression to through
symbolism and color theory.
Before van Gogh was an artist, he spent time as a teacher, an assistant preacher, a bookseller, and
then went to school for theology. He finally abandons all these pursuits by becoming an evangelist
to coal miners in southern Belgium. He empathized with them and acquired humanitarian like
traits; it was there that occurred the transformation of his love of God...into his love of art. Van
Gogh found himself in the midst of the Realism movement, which started in the1860s and ended
in the1890s. Since Realism was a social response to Romanticism, realist artists felt the need to
portray the world as it really was, or at least as they perceived it to be. The representation of
religion seemed to have taken a back seat in most realism art, however van Gogh seemed to have
intermingled his spirituality within his artworks. He was enthusiastic by the visual conviction that

a scene where a character in the scene is crying because they lost their friend, it would definitely
be strange if the music in the background was Can t Touch This by M.C. Hammer. Soundtracks
tell the audience what to feel whether it would be fear or excitement. With a soundtrack playing a
critical position in a movie, the songs that have been chosen have transcended more than just the
scenes they are played in, and turned into the embodiment of some of the major themes in the

The Problem Of Conflict Resolution
Abstract
Everyday people in the educational setting are required to work in groups and make decisions that
affect everyone. There are very few situations where everyone in a group or team will agree totally,
as a result, conflict is inevitable. It is important that we, as Human Resource administrators
understand that our schools are comprised of employees representing different cultures,
backgrounds, races and religious beliefs. We must ensure that we adopt and practice modes of
communication that are conducive to the promotion of great teamwork.
Conflict can arise from any one or more general sources in the workplace (McShane Von Glinow,
2003). Conflict as it arises should be addressed immediately, as if left unattended can create ... Show

Where is the combination of what is the daily work together to situations that arise from the
interaction between people, there are several times clashes of ideas, outlooks and values.
What is teamwork?
There are many variables that attribute to having a great team. There are many people that have to
define and recognize good team work but none more important than the Human Resource
Department. Team work is simply defined by many HR departments as the dynamics that occur
between employers and employees that promote and encourage effort on behalf of the employee
which ultimately translate into an increase in productivity of the employees. In most cases, this
process produces profits or the desired result for the company which in return ensures a certain
level of comfort for the employee.
What Is Conflict?
Conflict is defined as a fight, battle, or struggle, especially a prolonged struggle; strife. Simply put
conflict is the disagreement and disharmony among active participants that if not addressed in a
timely manner can result in lasting damage to relationships and the business.
The Most Common Sources of Conflict
Poor Communication
Poor communication is probably the biggest cause of conflict between employees in the workplace.
This can result in a difference in communication styles or a failure to communicate. Failing to
communicate in the workplace may cause employees

aerobic and muscle strengthening activity (CDC 2017). However, other related behaviors can
correspondingly contribute to risk factors of physical inactivity. For example, tobacco smoking
combined with a poor diet and stress can be the impeccable formula to a slow death.

Satyam Scandal Essay
The Satyam scandal is a corporate scandal that worked in India in 2009 where Chairman
Ramalinga Raju confessed that the company s accounts had been falsified not in small numbers but
largely. The Global corporate community was shocked and scandalized when the chairman of
Satyam, Ramalinga Raju resigned on 7 January 2009and confessed that he had manipulated the
accounts by US$1.47 Billion. In February 2009, CBI took over the investigation and filed three
charge sheets (on 7 April 2009, 24 November 2009 and 7 January 2010), which were later
clubbed into one. On 10 April 2015, Ramalinga Raju was convicted with 10 other members. This
was a case in which all its stake holders (government, employees, shareholders, and management)
were cheated. All their interests were sacrificed for the personal benefits of the company s
chairman who invested a major share of the wealth hence earned in real estate. His confessions
about the fraud in the company resulted in the drastic fall of companies share value from 500 to 11
in one single day. This lead to the investors losing their hope and trust in the company.... Show more

The Green Berets and Casualties of War
The Green Berets and Casualties of War The films I chose to do my comparative paper on are
The Green Berets and Casualties of War. Both of these films deal with issues concerning the
Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was viewed as unpopular and pointless by society; The Green
Berets objective was to gain support for the Vietnam War. The film puts great emphasis on liberal
war journalist George Beckwith (David Janssen). Beckwith originally doubts America s
involvement in the war, but after spending time with the GreenBerets, his attitude changes
significantly. Casualties of War has a different perspective on the Vietnam War. The film is based
on a real life incident and it focuses on the emotional and psychological aspects of war. The film...

Lighting is also used to tell the dramatic state of mind of a character, as is the case with Private
Eriksson in Casualties of War. Eriksson suffers an injury from combat and taken to a hospitable.
Shadows from the fan blowing on him go around his face in a rapid motion. As this is shown,
Eriksson dreams of hearing the screams of the Vietnamese woman who was killed by Sergeant
Meserve. As the screams increase in volume, the shadows from the fan go around Eriksson s face
at a faster pace. Right when the screams and shadows reach their height in intensity, Eriksson
wakes up from his dream. With this expressionistic use of lighting, it allows the audience to see
how much of an impact the murder of the Vietnamese woman had on Eriksson. Now that we have
covered lighting, let s take a look at color in these two films. The use of color in The Green Berets
creates a mood for the audience. The Green Berets were labeled the liberators from oppression,
and the film creates an environment that is colored in green to express that slogan. By using the
color green, it creates a tranquil and comfortable mood for the audience. The colors blue and green
help create what a character is feeling. This is proven when George Beckwith is telling John Wayne
about his change of heart toward the war. The shot shows Beckwith with a blue sky and

Corporal Punishment Is Not Uncommon
Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. Since
the beginning of recorded history, parents have used corporal punishment as a form of discipline.
Bible verses such as this instructs us that spanking as a form of corrective behavior coincides with
Christian ideology. In the early stages of a child s life, before the ability to understand reasoning
and explanations, corporal punishmentis necessary to correct undesirable behavior and promote
discipline. In recent years, this particular form of punishment has been banned in educational
institutions and usage shunned in homes in favor of new age discipline. As a result, school violence
has increased and school shootings have become an epidemic.
In today society, the above mentioned stance on corporal punishment is not uncommon. Many
believe that because it was used as a child rearing tool in their childhood that it is not only effective
but necessary in the rearing of obedient children. However, modern studies have consistently
contradicted this philosophy. It is now known that although corporal punishment demonstrates short
term results it ultimately leads to long term behavioral problems such as childhood aggression, poor
parent/child relationship, poor child mental health, and adult antisocial behavior.
Many proponents site the biblical passage spare the rod and spoil the child when defending the use
of corporal punishment. However, this passage is not derived from the

Self In Zootopia
Anyone can be Anything: How Self is Shaped by Individuals and Society.
In the movie Zootopia, racial profiling and social stereotypes are allegorized into distinctive,
discriminatory clade of predator prey and species archetypes such as slow sloths, sly foxes and
dumb bunnies. Most reviews praised the movie s thematic portrayals of stereotypes (e.g.
Telegraph, New York Times) and universal values of freedom and perseverance (e.g. Washington
Post). But few reviews address the films exploration of variations of identity as noted by Screen
Crush, and there was no in depth analysis of self. Hence, this essay seeks to explore self in
Zootopia. Within the city of Zootopia, the recurring slogan In Zootopia, anyone can be anything ,

This implies that one s self is susceptible to racial profiling and stereotyping, as Zootopia
allegorizes. In Zootopia, although Nick had childhood aspirations of becoming a scout, his
victimization at the hands of other animals leaves him with a pessimistic view of being able to
define self outside of his species stereotype, stating that if society see[s] a fox as shifty and
untrustworthy, there s no point in being anything else. Nick therefore accepts society s profiling as
a sly fox and becomes a con artist. In stark contrast to the hopeful belief spurred from the slogan
that Zootopian characters have the sovereignty to freely pursue their dreams, species stereotyping
within Zootopia limits the autonomy to construct self, and instead self making is dominated by
these discriminative perceptions. Consequently, Zootopian characters such as Nick resigned self to
a discriminatory role. No longer is self constructed by just the individual; Species stereotyping
becomes the social forces which drives the individual s notion of self. Although Zootopia s motto of
anyone can be anything allows citizens to participate in self creation, societal perceptions of the
individual dictates their notion of

Steven Spielberg s Reputation Of Jaws
Sharks have a bad reputation for being some of the most vicious animals on the face of this
earth. Steven Spielberg s 1975 block buster thriller movie jaws demonized sharks and portrayed
them as these vicious human eating animals and gave people a different perception of these
animals. Jaws served as that catalyst that propelled other movie makers to create films based on
the vengeance of sharks. All of these movies feed off of the fear that Jawsstarted. Jaws capitalized
on the public fear of sharks following the rise in human/sharkinteractions. With the increase in
shark attacks, people lauded the film that gave them both a monster shark and an experienced
hunter that killed it. The blockbuster depicted sharks as predators with the ability... Show more

attacked by predators or stepped on.

Lesbian Identity Politics and Associated Organizations Essay
Identity politics were a major part of social reform in the Sixties and Seventies. Yet, the advent of
identity politic reform originates in the Fifties, a decade that saw the African American Civil Rights
Movement start to gain momentum. On the heels of the Civil Rights movement, we also see the
Women s Liberation Movement begin to gain steam, shortly thereafter followed by the Gay
LiberationMovement. And as an offshoot of these reform movements, we observe the dawn of
lesbian identity politicsa movement very much its own amongst its predecessors. One sect would

After delivering the food, and being understandably annoyed with the task, she was belittled by a

in the Combahee River Collective, experienced very similar discrimination in Civil Rights
campaigns, especially groups like the Black Panthers. Just like Jay, many African American women
were used as sexual remuneration to men who did good work within their organizations. This
patriarchy, antithetic to the goals of feminism, was the undoubted enemy of both these lesbian
organizations usurping it became one clear goal. The Combahee River Collective, though, did not
feel separate from African American men concerning race, yet, felt doubly oppressed by white
patriarchy. Understanding that they connected with black men racially, yet struggled with them
sexually, almost supplements the idea that white men who controlled government and economy
were the ultimate oppressor. They did not feel they were separate, but rather, just opposed to black
men along patriarchal lines. Inversely, the Collective connected with white lesbians against
patriarchy, but were subjected to hierarchy within feminism as well as lesbianism. Secondly, we
see that if well known reformists were not male, they were heterosexual, the epitome being Betty
Friedan. This was the reason for the more specific goal of the two groups: battling hierarchy in

Democracy And Its Lack Of Democracy
Throughout Plato s Republic in Book VIII, readers are caught up in the conversation about four
unjust structures that each structure will succeed the other as society decays. The four unjust
structures are explained throughout dialogue and described as timocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and
tyranny. Most shocking critique throughout the discussion is about democracyand its ineffectiveness
to rule. Platos disagreement of democracy does not involve of what we are acquainted with today,
but rather the idea of democracy. Plato explores the central strain of the governmentthat is
acknowledged with liberty and fairness. Also, this form of government known for its embracement
of freedom and equality. Plato s description and disagreement about democracy is correct because
the consequences of such government is that it leads the population to pursue unnecessary desires.
Democracy is the type of government where the rule comes from people. Democracy, as we
know it today, gives power to the many and in turn give most importance to the idea of obtaining
freedom. Freedom empowers people to pursue their desires and obtain every opportunity they can
acquire. People in this government have unlimited mobility and have free speech to their ideas and
beliefs. However, Plato s argument is that this freedom will the downfall for this type of

Eddie , a big wave competition, took place at Waimea Beach for the first time in six years this
past weekend. The waves that are critical to Big Wave surfing reached a record height as many
of them reached 60 feet this year. In order for a competition to be considered an Eddie , the

Naturally, there is a high demand for oil in America, after all it is a key mineral in many of the
products used to keeping industrial operations running. In 2015, the United States consumed a
total of 7.08 billion barrels of petroleum products, an average of about 19.4 million barrels per
day. 1 Like the US, many countries would go through great lengths to acquire or keep a reliable
contact to a steady oil transit. In countries like Nigeria, Colombia and Africa are a few places
where, oil has been a factor in conflict over a region, starting wars over the land that harbors oil.

  • 2. Examples Of American Crime Obsession American Crime Obsession With crime shows like Making a Murderer, the Killing, Luther, and The Fall within reach of every person with a Netflix account, it makes it pretty easy to assume most people have, or will, watch a crime show at some point in their life. Americans are so obsessed with crime and the killers that drive it, which is why we are drawn towards the fictional crime tales. We have been apart of so many involuntary crimes and horrible events which shape our country, yet we continue to take these awful events and seek out more information and news about it. The real reason we ve become so obsessed with true crime is because of the desire that people have to learn more about the legal system, as well becoming intrigued by watching fictional crime shows. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Molly Fosco, a writer and a lifestyle blogger, says Most of us have never even been in a courtroom, let alone a murder trial, and our knowledge of the legal system doesn t encompass much more than a few episodes of Law and Order or The Good Wife. Until we actually go into a courtroom or experience a murder trial, our knowledge about the subject remains limited. By hearing and learning about different crime scenarios through the news or other forms of communication, it gives us a way to educate ourselves on the legal system without actually becoming involved with it. Along with that, the public s appetite for stories about a flawed criminal justice system is growing and this makes the people more hungry for any sort of news they can get their hands on about the legal system ... • 3. Edward Hopper, An American Realist Painter Edward Hopper was an American realist painter born in 1882 in New York. After studying art and many journeys, he had trouble getting famous and put on the art world map. But finally, in 1933, a first installation is dedicated to him at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. His works are mainly inspired by his journeys, trips to different places and the solitude of the American in the twentieth century. Nighthawksis his most famous piece of art (Laura Herail, blog). After researching and looking at many of his paintings, this artwork portrays sadness and yet it is not a sad picture. It could be something enticing and yet charming about anonymous diners. The lack of domesticity offering a relief what can be the full comfort of home. It may be easier to give away to sadness here than in a cozy living room with wallpaper and framed pictures. Home often appears to have betrayed Hopper s characters, something has happened there that forces them out into the night and on to the road. The 24 hour diner is a sanctuary for those who for some reason or another have failed to find there place in the normal world of relationships or community. Hopper s ability to portray solitude comes from his own familiarity with it. He lead comfortable middle class childhood as a son of a merchant, yet inside Hopper often felt a little bit awkward like an outsider. Hoping for a while to be an artist and yet his parents insisted he trains in commercial art to keep afloat financially. He hated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Problem Of Cell 13, By Jacques Futrelle Everybody has something they love and are committed to. Unquestionably, in the short story, The Problem of Cell 13, by Jacques Futrelle, Professor Augustus S.F.X. Van Dusen is not an exception. The Thinking Machine, as he is colloquially known as, is challenged by associates Dr. Charles Ransome and Mr. Alfred Fielding to escape from a high security prison cell using only his mind. Being as passionate as he is about logic, he accepts. In the story, Futrelle conveys the human experience of commitment by using descriptive literary devices, and emphasizing the dynamic character Dr. Charles Ransome. One indisputably evident theme infused into The Problem of Cell 13 is if you believe in something, you should go to great lengths for it.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example on page 249 reads, You might treat me precisely as you treated prisoners under sentence of death, and I would leave the cell (Futrelle). This shows that The Thinking Machine is claiming to be able to think his way out of a cell in order to document his claim. Because he is so passionate about logic, he is willing to spend a week in this cell, and eventually succeeds at escaping. Therefore, Dr. Charles Ransome is a dynamic character. In the story, Dr. Ransome is a scientist who strongly believes The Thinking Machine cannot escape a high security prison. An early attribute Dr. Ransome carries is his doubtfulness giving rise to uncertainty ( Doubtful ). In fact, on page 249, Dr. Ransome reasons, No man can think himself out of a cell (Futrelle). Although The Thinking Machine says he can escape, Dr. Ransome still doubts the possibility of The Thinking Machine living up to his name and thinking his way out of a cell. A conversation takes place on page 249 between The Thinking Machine and Dr. Ransome: You might treat me precisely as you treated prisoners under the sentence of death, and I would leave the cell. Not unless you entered it with tools prepared to get out, said Dr. Ransome. (Futrelle) Again, Dr. Ransome questions The Thinking Machine by arguing he could only escape prison using tools. He plainy does not believe The Thinking Machine s theory of anything being possible. Because Dr. Ransome is a dynamic character, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Access Of Equity Finance Through Crowdfunding From almost the beginning, the idea of community and local based Slow Money ideals being served through crowdfunding was acknowledged here in Southern California. Our Slow Money SoCal founding members were working against a conservative legal backdrop and a sprawling suburbia that made local investing and the community building it entails all the more difficult. In our early days, while we measured the idea of crowdfinancing still serving the Slow Money Principles, we decided it was a legitimate sounding of our regional voice. Today, the access to equity financethrough crowdfunding is just another opportunity to continue to serve ways to catalyze capital while exploring the inherent tension between the virtual world and the visceral character of a place based investing. We were broached by Kiva, the grandfather to all technology based crowdfinancing in 2013. Slow Money SoCal had worked without much success, for an approach to local investment during its first year and was ready to consider another way. Still reticent about the rules and regulations that served to inhibit a local investing story, we chose to sign on as an early Kiva Trustee hoping to get our feet wet as we continued to develop our more down to earth, place based approach. We endorsed our first Kiva loan in March 2014. In those early days of Slow Money SoCal, though some of us were comforted by the Kiva partnership and its legal sanctions, some thought the partnership was a distraction. If we were busy doing ... • 7. Malnutrition As Defined By Groark Song Malnutrition as defined by Groark Song (2012) is a state of nutritional imbalance most often related to undernutrition. They go on to explain that malnutrition is both when a child is eating too little or too much and not getting essential nutrients in early childhood, which can lead to obesity (Groark Song, 2012). The short term effects of malnutritionare more noticeable in early childhood education settings in the form of behavioral and mental health issues. A poorly nourished child may become disruptive or extremely withdrawn in the school setting, which can negatively affect their learning as well as the learning of their classmates (Groark Song, 2012). Micronutrient deficiency is a major effect of malnutrition. Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is associated with poor mental and motor development, poor cognition and school achievement (Prado, Dewey, 2014). The long term effects of malnutrition become more evident later on in childhood. These effects manifest themselves more in the child s physical and cognitive development. One of the major effects of malnutrition is childhood obesity. Obesity, if untreated, is known to lead to serious health problem later in life affecting the physical, cognitive and affect development of children and adults. Another significant effect of malnutrition is growth failure, as defined by Groark Song (2012) describes a growth pattern that is abnormal and is the result of taking in too few calories. Physical factors Physical factors associated with SIDS include: Brain abnormalities. Some infants are born with problems that make them more likely to die of SIDS. In many of these babies, the portion of the brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep doesn t work properly. Low birth weight. • 10. The 1900 Hurricane Book Review It is difficult to even imaging how serious hurricanes can be. Category 5 hurricanes are the strongest storms. Winds howl at more than 155mph. (33) They can be more than 300 miles from one side to another. (6) In this nonfiction book, Wood begins with a description of Hurricane Katrina. He describes how it was one the worst storms in U.S. history. It devastated the Gulf coast with 140 mph winds ripping apart buildings and tearing down power lines. The main damage to New Orleans was due to big holes breaking through the levee and Lake Pontchartrain s water flooding the city. Some areas were 20 feet deep, which left people stranded on their roofs for days before help arrived. The book continues by describing hurricanes and what causes them. Hurricanes are storms with strong, swirling winds up to 200 mph and can be more than 300 miles wide. These high winds are often destructive to cars, trucks, power lines, buildings and even roads. Hurricanes need heat and moisture to form. Then, the Earth s rotation gives the winds a twist. (14) If the hurricanes stay near warm water, it has plenty of energy to stay strong. However, many hurricanes weaken as they reach land, since there is no warm water on land. The authors explained that there are four stages of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. Rhetorical Analysis Of Patton s Speech This is a rhetorical analysis of Lieutenant General George S. Patton s Speech to the Third United States Army. It was a very successful speech given to the troops of the United States Third Army in 1944 before the invasion of France. After examining the genre, purpose of this speech, General Patton s audience, and how General Patton used ethos, logos, and pathos we can see why this iconic speech was so successful. First we will take a look at the genre of this piece. The genre is very important in literature because they are like guidelines that outline what your piece should have in it. For example if someone wanted you to write a speech you would look at examples of other speeches and see how they get a point across. You would not for instance look at a series of papers under the Lab Report genre for ideas on how to write a speech. When General George S. Patton was tasked with speaking in front of thousands of troops the speech genre was the appropriate way to address so many people. Secondly this speech is very focused on a purpose, to motivate the listener, give confidence, and hope. General George S. Patton motivates by taking in consideration for his audience and exploiting it. The listeners are all inexperienced soldiers who are scared of going into combat for the first time. Patton already has a reputation of being a hardcore successful, seasoned general. Everyone looks up to him and he uses lines such as That s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. to motivate people. When the soldiers of the Third Army hear Patton talk about how All real Americans love to fight it motivates all these very patriotic people because they link their love of country to loving the fight. Another great is example is when Patton states And we have the best team we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit and the best men in the world. Why, by God, I actually pity these poor bastards we re going up against. . Patton is making everything sound great saying that they have the best of everything, that they can t lose, and even that they have it so good he actually feels sorry for the people they are going up against. These examples are textbook motivation and it really makes Patton ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Essay on Judicial Activism Versus Judicial Restraint Judicial Activism Vs. Judicial Restraint The debate between Judicial Activism and Judicial Restraint really grabbed my attention. Judicial Activism and Judicial Restraint are two different ways to interpret the constitution and its laws. Both interpretations have their own strengths and weaknesses, which is why it is so hard to come to a final decision of which is acceptable and which is not (in most cases). While at the debate I didn t realize how many cases have boiled down to these two concepts. There have been many cases ended up being decided by both interpretations. I believe Judicial Activism should be removed from the Supreme Court. The Original definition of Judicial Activism is defined as a philosophy of judicial decision ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stare Decisis plays a large role in Judicial Restraint. Stare Decisis is sticking to an established ruling that was handed down by past judges or jurors. A form of judicial restraint is called the political question doctrine, and it is significant in understanding this interpretation of the law. The political question doctrine is when a court acknowledges that the constitution is violated but does not decide to act. There are plenty of examples of Judicial Restraint throughout our history but the one that stands out the most in my mind is Gore Vs. Bush. In this case the Florida supreme courts methods of recounting the presidential ballots was considered and ruled as having violated the Equal Protection Laws which is under the fourteenth amendment in a presidential election. Everyone seems to know that something wrong was done, but no one really understands what happened. Before this debate I didn t realize that this was an example of Judicial Restraint. And this is why I caint agree with either interpretations of the law. Both of these interpretations are ways to go around the laws already set in stone. I believe that there should be some type of law created to protect the constitution. I do not agree with either interpretations and I believe that they are both wrong. These are examples of flaws in the constitution that should be dealt with. As I listened to this debate I realized and understood more and more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What are the causes of rudeness? Many people do not realize how much rudeness can effect you mentally and emotionally. In an article titled Bleep! The decline of civility Kathleen Parker questioned whether or not our civility can be saved in today s society. Rudeness happens every day and sometimes you may be the one being rude to another without even realizing it. There s no reason to be rude to anyone, and said rudeness can be prevented. Indigenous Rights and Land Claims Around the World Essay With globalization and colonization taking over almost the entire known world, native tribes who are indigenous to their lands are losing control of the lands that their people have lived in for ages to the hands of foreign colonizers who claim the land as their own. Now, indigenous people all around the world are struggling to reclaim the lands and rights that were taken away from them through non violent social relations with national governments and large corporations. This article helps answer the question of this essay by showing the effects of globalization through colonization on aboriginal people s identities. Since their land had been under colonization, the Nisga a found it absolutely necessary to fight for their national identity to claim autonomy from the colonizers. By having the right to call themselves Nisga a citizens instead of Canadian citizens, their national identities have immensely strengthened due to oppression (Blackburn 2009). Soren C. • 17. My Experience At The United States Of America When I was little, around six years old, some of my acquaintances fantasised of being princesses while others dreamed of being police officers or knights. My notion was not as preposterous as theirs, but almost as out of reach; I wanted to study in the United States of America, better said I wanted to move there. Growing up in a relatively small town, where everyone seemed to share the same principles once they got past their childhood virtuous, I felt stuck. Once again, I was a dreamer, forever stuck in the what ifs scenarios of my own imagination. Hence, I was not contented, I wanted to experience the world outside of those city walls, the cities I saw and heard about on TV, I wanted to experience a different world, because I simply reckoned that everything would get better once I left. As I got older, those dreams, of moving aboard and starting all over, only got more insane. On some days, where I felt like my world was breaking apart again, I came home, crying and begging my mom to take a job aboard. To be honest, I had yet to learn about visa restrictions and all the social security benefits that Germany, as compared to international standards, had. In other words, my mom quickly made me realise that I had to wait for College to finally leave the city behind. This, nevertheless, did not stop me from divulging it to everyone around me. While my classmates always reaffirmed me as dewy eyed, adults simply labeled it as the guileless state of reverie. At the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Flood Of 1955 And Hurricane Katrina Natural disasters affect thousands of lives each year, and have the potential to drastically alter a country/state and its people. Because of the destructive force Mother Nature can bring about, it is imperative to have mitigation plans set up in populated areas to protect people and reduce the structural damage to buildings, houses, etc. There are some mitigation plans, however, that have been unsuccessful, resulting in catastrophic disasters. Best examples of these are the Connecticut Flood of 1955 and Hurricane Katrina. Even though these are two different types of natural disasters; the level of destruction, preparedness, mitigation strategies, and the overall aftermaths had profound and lasting changes on the areas inflicted, mainly Connecticut and Louisiana. In August of 1955, Connecticut suffered one of its worst flooding disasters in the history of the state. The flood was caused by two hurricanes passing through the region around the same time, bringing several inches of rain. Since the inception of the Innocence Project in 1992, more than 300 wrongfully convicted people have been exonerated after DNA testing established that the crime for which he or she had been convicted was committed by another (Innocenceproject.org, n.d.). Advances in forensic science makes possible the means to individualize other items of evidence that point to the person or persons responsible for a crime. Dr. Edmond Locard formulated the principle that is the foundation of forensic science: Every interaction leaves a trace. A drop of sweat or a flaked off skin cell could be all that is needed to corroborate a defendant s presence during the commission of a crime. Origins and History The earliest documented example of doctors making the connection between cause of death and crime can be found in a book titled HsiDuan Yu ( The Washing Away of Wrongs ) that dates back to 1248. In this book, doctors describe establishing a case of drowning by the presence of water in a subject s lungs and identifying a death by strangulation through observing the characteristic ligature marks on the throat and crushed cartilage in the neck (Nickell Fischer, 2014, p. 6). Additionally, Descartes affirmed that the pineal gland played a critical role, because it was involved in sensation, imagination, memory, and the causation of bodily movement (Lokhorst, 2005). Descartes believed that the pineal gland was suspended in the middle of the ventricles, which are fluid filled cavities in the center of the brain (Lokhorst, 2005). Paine was one of the many men who experienced the harsh effects of the war. The war was deadly, more deadly than ever could be expressed through words. The extremes of the war were felt by all, although some felt the cruelty the war more than others. Men from many different walks of life and men from different sides of the war all had their souls tried by this war. Some of the men, who joined the Colonial Army, could not take these trials once the going got tough. When the war started in the summer of 1776, the Army was doing well with the victory of Boston behind them, and with the excitement of defending Manhattan in the future, many men joined the Colonial Army. When the Americans lost New York, started to retreat through New Jersey, and the weather turned rainy, the number of men in the Colonial Army started to drop significantly. Men were deserting or waiting until their enlistments were up and then would not re enlist (McCullough 249). These numbers dropped even farther once the weather turned poor when the rain and snow came (McCullough 81). When looking at this painting, the viewer is submerged in color and motion as the eye travels around the iconic landscape. Not only is it visually pleasing, it has emotion and spiritual ties to the artist himself. Van Gogh s lack of evangelical ministry as well as his dwindling mental state was a force of reconciliation within his artwork, and the outcome was magnificent. The Starry Nightwas painted as a manifestation of religious and spiritual expression to through symbolism and color theory. Before van Gogh was an artist, he spent time as a teacher, an assistant preacher, a bookseller, and then went to school for theology. He finally abandons all these pursuits by becoming an evangelist to coal miners in southern Belgium. However even with this constant change the book follows the same pattern, proving all thoughtis irrational. Now most people would say right away that No, I would not do that , but after reading this book and thinking about this issue, people would say that they would probably cheat on a test for 5 cents, especially if they couldn t be caught. Dan also connects with his readers to interest them in further pursuing these topics. He assumes that people reading this book are college level or higher and frequently references college life. These references serve to make the reader think that not only are these facts he presents valid but also that the reader is involved in this text. As an example Dan talks about the emergency pizza button in MIT s East Campus. Anyone at MIT will instantly relate to this piece of humor he added in. Because Dan knew his audience, he is able to custom create his message for these college students. He does this both by his humor and the choice of studies he uses. Since the beginning of recorded history, parents have used corporal punishment as a form of discipline. Bible verses such as this instructs us that spanking as a form of corrective behavior coincides with Christian ideology. In the early stages of a child s life, before the ability to understand reasoning and explanations, corporal punishmentis necessary to correct undesirable behavior and promote discipline. In recent years, this particular form of punishment has been banned in educational institutions and usage shunned in homes in favor of new age discipline. Many believe that because it was used as a child rearing tool in their childhood that it is not only effective but necessary in the rearing of obedient children. However, modern studies have consistently contradicted this philosophy. It is now known that although corporal punishment demonstrates short term results it ultimately leads to long term behavioral problems such as childhood aggression, poor parent/child relationship, poor child mental health, and adult antisocial behavior. This implies that one s self is susceptible to racial profiling and stereotyping, as Zootopia allegorizes. In Zootopia, although Nick had childhood aspirations of becoming a scout, his victimization at the hands of other animals leaves him with a pessimistic view of being able to define self outside of his species stereotype, stating that if society see[s] a fox as shifty and untrustworthy, there s no point in being anything else. Nick therefore accepts society s profiling as a sly fox and becomes a con artist. In stark contrast to the hopeful belief spurred from the slogan that Zootopian characters have the sovereignty to freely pursue their dreams, species stereotyping within Zootopia limits the autonomy to construct self, and instead self making is dominated by these discriminative perceptions. Consequently, Zootopian characters such as Nick resigned self to a discriminatory role.
