Before taking this course, my perception of Roman spectacles was unfortunately heavily based
upon what I was told by my elders or what I saw in movies like Gladiator, Hercules and Pompeii.
Taking this course has been the biggest eye opener regarding the truth about what really

should not just aimlessly believe what I am told or what I see in movies, because people clearly
lie about a lot of things and are inaccurate, yet because they are older or have a mass platform what

How could Hollywood lie to me like that?! Films like Gladiator, Hercules and Pompeii all lead
me to believe that arenas contained things like animals, pits that warriors could fall into at
anytime, and even were able to house full armies fighting each other to the death, but instead the
reality was far different. Although there were venatores who hunted animals, in gladiatorial
combat animals were never used. They also generally fought in flat arenas, with no fancy things
like pits to fall into. Gladiatorial combat also typically only occurred man to man. Everything
shown in the movies is hyper exaggerated in comparison to what actually occurred because
Hollywood cares more about keeping the viewers interested, and dazzling them with wondrous
images of Ancient Rome, then being accurate. Even things like the armour many of the
gladiators wore was not accurately depicted. In the movies some of them were shirtless and did
not wear helmets, which was definitely not the reality because they generally always wore
helmets, armour and tunics. They would wear these things for protection because, contrary to the
movies, gladiators did not fight to the death. They were actually highly valuable for
entertainment, and cost a lot of money to train, so their lives mattered to the sponsors, therefore
it was rare that they were killed in combat. Finding out this information really has changed my
perspective on all movies regarding Ancient Rome, but specifically the ones that include
gladiatorial combat, because next time I see a new film I will be aware of what is real or fake and

In the early 1980s, the international civil aviation community started to express concern about the
limitations on existing facilities and procedures, and their inability to cope with increasing air
traffic in the future years. Consequently Special Committee on FANS was established to study,
identify and assess new concepts and technology in the field of air navigation, including satellite
technology, and also to make recommendations thereon for the development of air navigation for

Communications, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) concept
which identified the use of data communications and of satellite based systems as being the two

I have been in a situation where a man approached me at a Cabelas (sporting goods store) and we
