Atonement Theme Love Essay
In Atonement, the theme of love is explored in a variety of different ways. McEwan explores many
different kinds of love including romantic love, platonic love, self love and family love. One way that
McEwan explores love in the novel is through letters. The epistolary form of the novel gives the
readers an insight at what the characters are thinking and feeling, as they more profoundly express
their feelings through their letters. For example, Robbie and Cecilia have expressed their feelings to
eachother through letters since the earlier chapters of the novel, where Robbie sends an explicit letter
to Cecilia (Chapter 8). Their letters continued even when Robbie went to prison and Dunkirk. Cecilia
uses her words to tell Robbie that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These different kinds of love help to make the novel more complex and offer more viewpoints to the
story. Family love is a great theme in the novel, and we see it in many forms. For example, we see it in
the early chapters between Cecilia and Briony Cecilia and Briony have an extremely strong
relationship that falls apart as the novel progresses. The memory of Cecilia comforting Briony in a
nightmare It s only a dream. Come back in Chapter 3, Page 44 helps tell us about the relationship they
have with eachother, and also helps to show how Briony has unconditional support and loyalty to her
family. Briony s fault is that she cannot comprehend the idea that her siblings can be in any way
sexual she fails to see that Cecilia could be in a consenting relationship with Robbie in the library, and
she tries to get her brother Leon to provoke his admiration, and guide him away from a careless
succession of girlfriends, and towards the right form of wife . This strong family love is shown
through Briony being undeniably loyal to Cecilia as she calls herself Cecilia s protector and thinks a
tragedy will bring them closer together. Everything she does is a step towards protecting her family.
Family love is explored through all the characters, and the different relationships offer different
viewpoints to the story Lola and Briony, Robbie and Grace, Emily and Briony...these relationships
show pure and strong family love.

The Impact Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906
The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and Recovery.
What did the people of San Francisco suffer after the earthquake of 1906? In order to answer this
question, we need to know what the San Francisco earthquake was. The San Francisco earthquake
happened in 1906 with a magnitude of 7.8 and caused a fire that burned for 7 days. This was the
biggest recorded earthquake in San Francisco. The foreshock started at 5:12am and 25 seconds later
the earthquake started that lasted 40 to 60 seconds, with most San Franciscans asleep in rooms, they
became trapped with only their hope to save them. The earthquake and fire of San Francisco in 1906
will go down as one of the worst earthquakes in the United States history. It s after affects can still be
felt in the California area.
The San Francisco earthquake caused quite a lot of damage in the area, but what is an earthquake? An
earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates along a transform boundary and what plate is California
sitting on? The Pacific Plate which is not connected to the North American plate and the plate
boundary is a transform boundary. Earthquakes occur so often there that people say it is like a
rainstorm that is ignored. The place where the Pacific Plate is grinding along with the North American
Plate is called the San Andreas Fault. As stated before the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 which
caused so much destruction a fire broke out. Nobody really knows where the fire started but it burned
for 7 days and scorched over 500 city blocks leaving the once proud and powerful city into dust. The
combination of the earthquake and fire is said to have killed Over 700 deaths by the earthquake and
fire is now believed to be an understatement the total loss of life by a factor of 3 or 4. (The Great 1906
San Francisco Earthquake.)
Even before the earthquake people saw suspicious things with animals. For example, Lisa A.
Chippendale in her book The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, quoted Sergeant Cook who stated
The horses seemed skittish, frequently neighing and nervously pulling at their reins. Many people
were asleep in the time of the shock. By the first shock some shot up and tried to get their clothes on,
but their struggle was in vain, they could

Tonight I Can Write... Tonight I can write... is one of the best poems written by the great Pablo
Neruda. He was known as a poet when he was 10 years old. He wrote in many different styles,
including passionate love poems such this chosen poem. This is one of the greatest poem I ve ever
came across. Pablo really expressed his love and feelings towards his no longer loved one. Reading
this poem showed me how loyal and strong he is as well as remembering all the memories whether
they were a happy memories or sad ones. This poem also shows the reader from the beginning, how
their relationship was kind of great and then how things got escalated quickly and the conflict that he
was fighting between himself when he couldn t forget her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem begins with a statement which is repeated 3 times throughout the poem in line 1, 5 and 11
which created rhythm. This helps the reader to come back to that phrase and be able to fully
understand the depth of what the writer is feeling.
Next, when the writer said The night is shattered and the blue stars shiver in the distance , he used
imagery which is when words are used to create visual images. In this line, the writer creates an image
of the night s sky in readers mind and describes them as far away. These

Tire Repair In Cassadaga, NY
You need gas to make your vehicle move, but the tires are also play an important role in getting your
vehicle from Point A to Point B and anywhere else you go in between. Because your tires have a huge
responsibility, it is never good when something is wrong with them. In some instances, you may know
exactly what is wrong, but in others, it may take the help of a mechanic to properly diagnose the
problem and repair your tire.
Here are few situations where you would need tire repair in Cassadaga, NY.
Punctures: When you look at a tire and touch it, they feel as though they are durable and nothing can
damage them. Tires are strong, but they may not always be able to resist damage, like punctures.

When one or more of them is low, you need to get air in them as soon as possible. This is actually
what a lot of people do, but when there is an issue with the valve, the air you put in the tire can come
right back out in a matter of days. Getting the valve repaired or replaced keep the air in your tires and
you safe from accidents.
Flat tire: You can get a flat tired for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes, there s a nail stuck in their,
the valve is faulty or over pumped tired can lead to a flat. Again, when a tire is flat, this can prevent
you from having a pleasant, safe driving experience. It would be ideal for you to get this issues
addressed right away and ensure yourself and other drivers on the road are safe.
Improper repair: If you have had issues with your tires in the past, you most likely took it in to be
checked out and got it repaired. It is possible that the previous repair done on your tire wasn t the
greatest. Not only could this have caused the same problem, it could have resulted in whole new one.

1. What is your overall strategy (Selling on Price or Value?) A. If selling on low price, what is the
implication for decisions you will make on spending (Advertising, PR, Branding, Channel Support,

I figured putting money towards efficiency would not only allow me to create more units, but it would
also bring down the amount of wastage as to where increasing SCU would create more wastage and
also make the efficiency upgrades that I would purchase less effective per dollar. This is likely because
with more SCU, comes more equipment and more employees that need to be trained or upgraded with
efficiency updates in order to improve production and productivity. Therefore, less units equals less
distribution of upgrades.
I essentially wanted to be an efficient company that could maintain a steadily increasing Share Holder
Value with as few expenditures as possible, and it seemed to be working for a while. I also wanted to
have a higher number of sales as it seemed the more sales I had, the less customers the competition
had to sell to keeping their sales down a little bit.
B. If selling on value, what value are you planning to sell (Quality, Product Specs, Delivery, a trusted
brand)? Use the Market Information Report (Product Dimension Preferences and Product Dimension
Sensitivities tables) to explain your decision.

The Question Of Being Is The Darkest Of All Philosophy
The question of being is the darkest in all philosophy. So concluded William James in thinking about
that most basic of riddles: how did something come from nothing? The question infuriates, James
realized, because it demands an explanation while denying the very possibility of explanation. From
nothing to being there is no logical bridge, he wrote. In science, explanations are built of cause and
effect. But if nothing is truly nothing, it lacks the power to cause. It s not simply that we can t find the
right explanation it s that explanation itselffails in the face of nothing. This failure hits us where it
hurts. We are a narrative species. Our most basic understanding comes through stories, and how
something came from nothing is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ancient Greeks suggested that empty space is filled with substance a plenum, an ether. Aristotle
conceived of the ether as an unchanging fifth element, more perfect and heavenly in its invariance
than earth, air, fire, or water. True nothingness was at odds with Aristotle s physics, which said that
bodies rise up or fall down as dictated by their rightful place in the natural order of things.
Nothingness, however, would be perfectly symmetric it would look the same from every angle
rendering absolute spatial directions like up and down utterly meaningless. An ether, Aristotle figured,
could serve as a kind of cosmic compass, an ultimate reference frame against which all motion could
be measured. For those who abhorred a vacuum, the ether banished every last trace of it. The ancient
ether stuck around for millennia until it was re imagined in the late 19th century by physicists like
James Clerk Maxwell, who discovered that light behaves as a wave that always travels at a particular
speed. What was waving, and speed relative to what? The ether was a handy answer, providing both a
medium for light waves to travel through, and, as Aristotle originally imagined, a reference frame
against which all

Taking a Look at Gang Violence
Many American families share similar stories of their loved ones being murdered by violent street
gang members. These victims often had nothing to do with the gangs or gang members that killed
them. A street gang is a group of people who commonly involve themselves in heinous crimes such as
murder, assault, drug dealing, robbery, and car theft. These gangs are present all over the nation and
are starting to spread to other countries. It is imperative for the United States government to put a stop
to gangs and gang violence. Ed Gottesman and Richard Brown agree that for a group to be considered
a gang it needs six key elements: a collection of individuals, the use of symbols, special forms of
communication, permanence, a sense of turf, and involvement in crime. Gottesman and Brown go on
to say, What distinguishes a gang from other groups is its involvement in crime, which is often heavy
and recognized as a key feature of membership. This means that all gangs are involved in crimes, the
number one reason why the United States needs to put a stop to gang violence. Gangs form for four
main reasons: a need for family and companionship, basic needs such as food, a higher social status or
appeal, and protection. When there is a large migration or immigration of people, gangs tend to
increase in size because there are more people looking for these four basic needs. During the 1950s to
the 1970s, gangs grew greatly in the four regions of the United States, the East, Midwest,

A boiling, muggy, day where even bacon fries on the sidewalk. You look out your window, and see a
bird, a sneaker, and, a puppy? But, this is not your average spotless, chubby puppy. This puppy is

abandoned. Next you see a car, a beautiful shimmering white, the sun s rays bouncing off the car,
blind your eyes just as a girl jumps out. She walks over to the dog slowly, then gently she leads him
into the back of their van and they are gone. Who was that girl you wonder. Why was that dog just
roaming on the streets? Why would anyone just abandon their poor pup? What can I do to stop this?

Essay On What Led Up To The Civil War Dbq
During the period of 1820 1840, the Industrial Revolution created a transparent divide between the
Northern and Southern regions. Evidently, the Industrial Revolution proposed change in the Northern
way of life to a more opportunistic environment, but the Southern regions remained the same
encompassed by the use of slavery for their own benefit. Moral tensions arose from the complications
between the two regions, creating abolitionist groups and extremists to dictate an impending battle
between the North and South. The Civil War was an inevitable feat due to northern extremism and the
differing perspectives of proper leadership of both sides.

Both regions believed their ideals were proper therefore causing this type of leadership as
inconceivable at the time. Northern candidate, Abraham Lincoln was a strong proponent towards the
unification of America whether it appeased the northern abolitionists or the southern plantation owner
(Doc 4). Similarly Stephen Douglas proposed the idea of popular sovereignty as a means to unify the
nation (Doc 5) . His ideals were more similar to the great compromisers Clay, Webster, and Calhoun
who were deceased. All five of these men had one goal, to unify America, but the conflicting
perspectives between Lincoln and Douglas lead to a stalemate, in which no decision was made to save
the country. Thus the American Civil War became not an if but when?
In a time of crisis, Congress did not prove to be a beneficiary towards the rehabilitation of the
American Union. Indicated by the census of the two houses between 1849 1861, many decisions
would become biased towards the Democratic Party due to their representation in government (Doc
3). Rather than coming to a consensus about the issue at hand, congress establishes an invisible line
that indicates the divided North and South as free or slave states, fixating the battle between the North

Essay On Plasma Collisionality
The relationship between plasma collisionality and intermittency has been investigated for density and
potential fluctuations in the stellarator TJ K, as well as with Hasegawa Wakatani simulations. The
intermittency level was determined in experiments using two methods. First, the scale separated
kurtosis analysis consisted of applying a wavelet transform to density and potential time series and
calculating the kurtosis of the wavelet coefficients at a chosen frequency scale, ( removed HTML ) (

For density fluctuations, a general trend of increasing intermittency with increasing collisionality is
observed, for both experimental data and simulated data. This trend agrees with the HW simulation
result for the Lagrangian intermittency at high collisionality. ( removed HTML ) ( removed HTML )
12 ( removed HTML ) ( removed HTML ) For potential fluctuations, on the other hand, no trend in the

describes the spatio temporal evolution of the density, potential, and vorticity, with a parallel coupling

Celebrity and Image Selling
Musicians, actors, athletes, and models all depend on publicity from the media. Promotions through
magazines, newspapers, concerts, movies, CD s, sports networks and social media determine their
success. Not only do the musicians, actors, athletes, and models depend on social media, but also on
the fans. The media allows the public to be involved and interested in what s happening in different
aspects of celebrity entertainment. The influence the media has on celebrity and image selling is very
effective in producing successful careers.
Musicians are one of many aspects of entertainment that are impacted by the media. Possibly the
biggest shift in music has come through social media through an increased level of interaction
between musicians and fans (Evans). Now that we have social media it benefits the artist and the fans.
The artist is able to broadcast, promote and share things that were not possible before. An example of
this would be the artist can share their latest news, achievements or plans with their fans. The fans are
able to keep up with the artist, be more interactive with them and communicate with them better. An
example of this would be they can message , leave comments, or watch videos of the celebrity. These
are just some of the ways that the media has impacted the music industry.

Veno Anonymous Snakes Research Paper
Venomous snakes are known as rich sources of toxins among venomous animal species. Snakes
venoms are complex chemical mixtures of pharmacologically active compounds such as enzymes,
peptides and proteins with specific chemical and biological activities (Ménez et al., 2006, Jiminez
Porras, 1968), in addition to non protein components such as carbohydrates, lipids and metal ions.
Snakes venoms are mostly reputed for their neurotoxic substances, which induce paralysis and death,
and hemotoxic substances that have hemorrhagic effects (Greene, 1997, Jiminez Porras, 1968). In that

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Welfare
Did you know that 56 billion animals are slaughtered each year? People believe that farmers are
abusing and causing stress on the animals. Farmers use confined feeding operations to maximize the
production. By having the confined feeding operations, it gives the animals no room to graze. When
they can t graze, it restricts the animal to move or to exercise ( On The Farm ). The animals are not
given any pain relief during certain practices like castration or dehorning. Animal welfare is not
needed in the farming aspect, because the animals are meant for food. In the 1970 s, animal welfarist
got together and tried to sue farmers for being cruel and harming animals. The government created the
right to farm laws. That law protected farmers rights when farming. Twelve states banned certain farm
practices because they were believed to be inhumane. Those bans include, gestation crates for sows,
veal crates for calves, and battery cages for chickens. All those states that banned the practices were
small in the ag field. The farmers are saying that they are not hurting animals, they are protecting
them. People that live in cities or that don t experience the farm work will say it is inhumane. Farmers
are trying to make changes to stop these regulations. State Farm Bureaus are trying backing up the
farmers. The regulations could ruin the agricultural business (Fifield). Farmers use the most efficient
methods which lower the prices for the consumer. The other people would say that the most efficient
way goes against the animal s welfare. When using the high welfare methods it raises the price of eggs
by 18% which is about 49 cents per dozen. Walmart and McDonalds will be using only cage free eggs
by 2025. That will increase the price of the eggs. They cages and crates are said to be safe and sanitary
ways for egg production. Makes the price of food increase because the farmer can t have as many
animals because it requires too much space to be humane (Fifield). Gestation crates are the safest way
for a sow to give birth. Gestation crates are inhumane for the sows. They can only stand or lie down.
And they are in the crate for up to 4 months without walking. Going 4 months without walking will

Greek Columns And The Doric Order Of Greek Architecture
Greek architecture has survived throughout history and plays a major role in many structures today.
Some of the modern structures that resemble Greek styling and architecture are government buildings.
By building some of our most important structures with Greek designs, it shows our current emphasis
on Greek architecture. There are three distinct orders, or types, of architecture. These are the Doric,
Ionic, and Corinthian orders. Possibly one of the most distinguished aspects supplied by Greek
architecture is the column. Columns were prevalent in Greek society and were found in many of their
temples and important structures such as the Parthenon. The first and most simplistic order of Greek
architecture is the Doric order. According to the article, Doric Columns and the Doric Order of
Classical Architecture, Doric architecture is characterized by columns that Doric columns are, stouter
than those of the Ionic or Corinthian orders. Their smooth, round capitals are simple and plain
compared to the other two Greek orders. The capital is the very top piece of the column that connects
the column to the rest of the structure, or the entablature. Unlike other orders, Greek Doric columns
did not have bases; instead the column was fixed directly on the foundation of the structure. This
simplistic design was implemented on one of the most well known works of architecture from Ancient
Greece, the Parthenon. An article titled, The Parthenon, describes how the Parthenon is a, Doric

Descriptive Lake House Essay
It was chilly. It always was. The slight breeze and the overcast clouds provided a gray morning, which
to some foreshadowed a sad and droopy day but I saw the hopeful rays of sunshine attempting to leak
through the dull, gray bars that separated the warm sun from the cool ground. The lake house: a place
where I enjoyed the fruits of having a friendship with the daughter of the family who owned the
house. From wakeboarding to tubing to boat rides the lake offered all the amenities one could hope for
in a fairly large body of water. Yet these forms of entertainment only amount to the smallest fraction
of why the lake house is so integral to my contentment.
The dock has a fine hardwood finish that prevents painful splinters, plenty of comfortable lawn chairs
to sit in, an emerald green table where I have played countless hours of Settlers of Catan, and an
American flag that flutters majestically in the wind. The view, needless to say, is breathtaking. In the
chilly, gray mornings that accompany my lake house visits, I wake up early, amble to the dock, plop
down on a comfortable lawn chair, and gaze out into the body of water that is Weiss Lake. The smooth
waves undulate across the calm surface of the lake as if a herder is flocking his sheep slowly back into

History of Film
Plays and dances had elements common to films scripts, sets, lighting, costumes, production,
direction, actors, audiences, storyboards, and scores. They preceded film by thousands of years. Much
terminology later used in film theory and criticism applied, such as mise en scène. Moving visual
images and sounds were not recorded for replaying as in film.
The camera obscura was pioneered by Alhazen in his Book of Optics (1021),[2][3][4] and was later
perfected near the year 1600 by Giambattista della Porta. Light is inverted through a small hole or lens

After this date, the Edison company developed its own form of projector, as did various other
inventors. Some of these used different film widths and projection speeds, but after a few years the 35
mm wide Edison film, and the 16 frames per second projection speed of the Lumière Cinématographe
became standard. The other important American competitor was the American Mutoscope Biograph
Company, which used a new camera designed by Dickson after he left the Edison company. [8]
At the Chicago 1893 World s Columbian Exposition, Muybridge gave a series of lectures on the
Science of Animal Locomotion in the Zoopraxographical Hall, built specially for that purpose in the
Midway Plaisance arm of the exposition. He used his zoopraxiscope to show his moving pictures to a
paying public, making the Hall the very first commercial movie theater.[5]
William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, chief engineer with the Edison Laboratories, is credited with the
invention of a practicable form of a celluloid strip containing a sequence of images, the basis of a
method of photographing and projecting moving images.[citation needed] Celluloid blocks were
thinly sliced, then removed with heated pressure plates. After this, they were coated with a
photosensitive gelatin emulsion.[citation needed] In 1893 at the Chicago World s Fair, Thomas Edison
introduced to the public two pioneering inventions based on this innovation; the Kinetograph

Diabetes Mellitus Research Paper
Ms. Annabelle Anglo
3/16/2015
EXPLANATION OF PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
The pathophysiology of the two types of Diabetes Mellitus are described by Schilling (2010). Type 1
Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus starts with a viral infection or other triggering condition that
forms antibodies that destroy the beta cells within the pancreas. This causes the pancreas production of
insulin to drop over time. Initially, the body uses the insulin that was already produced, but as the
insulin decreases, the cells within the body are not able to receive and use the glucose. The sugar
remains in the bloodstream after digestion and the negative effects of hyperglycemia become more
damaging. With Type 1, about 90% or the beta cells are killed by the antibodies.
Type 2 Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease caused by one or more of the
following three factors.
Impaired insulin production within the pancreas, so the body does not have enough to move the
glucose into the tissues and cells.
Incorrect glucose production in the liver.
The cells resist the insulin, so it cannot attach to the correct receptors.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES MELLITUS, according to the American Diabetes
Association (2015) the most basic symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 DM are:
The three P s

Essay On How Did The Roman Empire Divide
An Empire Divided When the massive civil conflict finally ended in 284. It was decided the empire
was too strained and large to be governed by one man in one city. It limited military power. And
created pockets where ambitious generals could become usurpers. No one wanted another Crisis. The
empire was split in two. The Western and Eastern Roman Empires, The West contained Rome, and the
provinces west of the Greek peninsula. The East, often called the Byzantine Empire due to the name
of its capital, with everything to the east. While this helped the governing process of Rome it did lead
to the downfall of the Western Empire. When the East split away, Western Rome lost a significant part
of its territory that generated money for the empire. Most of Western Rome was agricultural with the
exception of North Africa and western Hispania. Both of which would later be taken over by the
Vandals. Western Rome could not sustain itself without the support of the Eastern Empire. Religious

Only attacking to regain lost territory. This was a good thing for the Roman military. But, it did cripple
the workhorse of the Roman economy. Slaves. Once the expansion ended, Rome stopped receiving
fresh slaves from the outside. When a slave died, you couldn t really replace them. Less and less work
was getting done in Rome. Its reliance on slavery to do almost all physical labor made the Roman
people themselves weak. They couldn t perform the same tasks to keep money flowing. When The
Vandals took Carthage and North Africa, they also took Rome s last reliable source of income. The
Vandals became pirates, raiding and sabotaging Roman trade throughout the Mediterranean. By the
time the Vandals sacked Rome in 455, in many senses the West did not have its own economy.

The First Three Noble Truths
Throughout this paper, I will be discussing the first three Noble Truths. I will first explain each of the
three Noble Truths. Then I will explain how each of the three Noble Truths would be extremely
beneficial to my life. The first of the three Noble Truths concerns the diagnosis of humanity. That is to
say, all humans have a fundamental problem and that problem is suffering. This fundamental problem
is not something that one can hide from or ignore. It is something that calls for reflection coming to
terms with the brute fact that human existence is attached to suffering. Suffering is ubiquitous. That is
to say, suffering pervades all of human life. Therefore, all persons must accept suffering as a mere fact
of existence. Suffering consists of, physical, mental and emotional suffering. For example, physical
suffering would consist of having a disease, or getting into an injury such as a car accident. Mental
suffering would consist of one who experiences depression, sadness and the like from the death of a
loved one. Moreover, when one experiences frustration and anger from not getting what they want
such as a baby who is hungry and cries or a child at a store and their parents won t buy them a toy.
Emotional suffering is They have to take medicine to help their own body sustain itself. Buddha states,
This, monks is the Noble Truth of Suffering; birth is suffering; decay is suffering; illness is suffering;
death is suffering; presence of objects we hate is suffering;

Examples Of Corruption In A Doll House And The Great Gatsby
Corruption is an intriguing idea and one generally unexplored rationally. Corruption is a state of
people and gatherings that are portrayed by immoral acts. In Henrik Ibsen s A Doll House and F. Scott
Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby the whole method for how connections shape and keep up is done as
such through shameless acts. The world these authors portray in one where achievement is predicated
upon riches and the belonging of wealth. In this world material wealth is simply a similar esteem. This
has turned into the concentration in the social world in these books regardless of what the results are.
This is seen by Daisy Buchanan and Torvald Helmer as they both depicted as ethically degenerate in
light of the fact that the way they treat their life partners and their individual materialistic qualities. In
The Great Gatsby most characters reveal themselves to be exceptionally materialistic. Daisy weds and
remains with Tom Buchanan as a result of the way of life he can accommodate her. Regardless of the
lack of affection Daisy has for Tom, she remains with him due to the fact that he originates from a
well off family and is rich. Rather than wedding somebody that she adores. Daisy s choices depend on
her money related security. Daisy is the sort of riches and way of life that all Americans dream to live
like. Gatsby notices, she s got an indiscreet voice... her voice is full of money. (Fitzgerald 103). This
quote symbolizes Daisy as a definitive image of the American Dream, the guarantee of riches and old
money. The imagery present in this quote depicts Daisy and all that she speaks to a reality of
defilement since all there is in a marriage for her is an approach to keep up her riches. Whatever is left
of this expressly depicts Daisy as, high in a white palace, the king s daughter, the golden girl...
(Fitzgerald 106). This has an influence on Daisy to seem like the princess that gets hitched to a hero
since they are both valuable prizes. Gatsby sees that he could not have given Daisy what she wanted in
a marriage like Tom could give her. Daisy got hitched to a person, not for affection but rather utilized
him for the things he could improve the situation with her wealth. She let Tom into her life

Mulvey s Argument
Mulvey s argument is grounded in psychoanalytic theory, using the theory as a political weapon to
[demonstrate] the way the unconscious of patriarchal society has structured film form (Mulvey 6). Art,
particularly commercial art such as film, is grounded and shaped by society s conscious and
subconscious views. In addition to the patriarchal views Mulvey discusses in her paper, society also
has ingrained ableist views that shape how people view the world and art. The idea of the castrated
woman is central to Mulvey s argument. She argues that this castrated woman symbolises the
castration threat by her real absence of a penis and stands in patriarchal culture as signifier for the
male other . If the penis represents manhood, then it also must represent the male societal role as
provider and protector. Thus, those that cannot fulfill these roles are also symbolically castrated
regardless of their gender. Although there are many reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When Hawking receives his diagnoses, he is on display, spread out naked on the examination table.
Here it is only his body we are viewing and not he full depth of his character. In order to establish the
progression of his disease, the film uses a sequence of close ups putting only those parts of Hawking
that are symptomatic on display. At one moment in particular, Marsh uses rack focus so that although
his face appears on screen, only Hawking s trembling hands are in focus. This is an explicit indicator
to the viewer exactly where our eyes are supposed be, it is not on Stephen Hawking the person, rather
Stephen Hawking the disability or lack on which our eyes are supposed to fall. This separates
Hawking the theoretical physicist from the disabled body on display. Through these dehumanizing,
close up shots, Hawking is transformed from a character of depth, the driving force behind the
narrative, to a flat object for our voyeuristic viewing

and through imagery. Therefore, there are more than one way for experiential therapist to help their
client to be able to identify key issues in their life. Furthermore, experiential allows there to be space

History Of Rice Harvesting In Canada
Traditionally, rice is harvest in a big group of your family in later months of summer each year. In
August people would move to rice camps for harvesting of rice. Once rice would ripen most of their
energy was then focused on harvesting. According to Harvesting and Processing in Canada, harvesting
wild rice is also called knocking the rice where they would use canoes that are said to be the best
watercraft to use because of their shape and smoothness, which causes the least amount harm to the
rice plants. The only tools the Dakotas and Ojibwa need were to move the canoe through the plants
and ricing sticks. They would use the canoe paddles to get to the wild rice beds, also the long poles
were used to move through the rice beds. Every harvester ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fresh harvested rice would then be dried almost as soon as it came off the lake because If wasn t,
it would mold very quickly. The rice would then be carried to campsites in bark trays where it was
spread out to dry. The freshly harvested rice would then continue to ripen. To get rid of any moisture
before roasting it, it must have air, sun, and sometimes heat. According to Harvesting and Processing
in Canada rice would be dried on many different things such as, woven mats, animal skins, layers of
grass or a sheet of birch bark sewn together called apakwaan. While the rice is spread out, it was then
picked over to remove any pieces of stalks, leaves, and insects that might be in the batch. If for some
reason they couldn t get all the rice to dry immediately, they would then preserve it by digging holes
in the soil by lakes and keeping it in water for up to a week. One of the many important steps in
preserving rice for later use was dehydrating or roasting the kernel. This process served many
important reasons such as: it would then reduce the amount of moisture in the grain; it also destroyed
the germs so it would not re sprout, and it would loosen the hull from the

The Boston University Archaeology Department Essay
On May 9th, 2016, the Boston University Archaeology Department held a public outreach event
called, Eating Archaeology , where guests were served foods from four different time periods and
places: Bronze age Mycenae, Bronze age China, Pre Columbian Mesoamerica, specifically the Aztecs,
and mid 19th century Boston. The creation of these dishes was made possible through analyzing
archaeological sites through the lens of the newly popularized sub field, archaeology of the senses,
which studies how the materiality of the world contributes to and is influenced by how humans use
their senses (Hamilakis 4). Through analyzing the bodily senses, archaeologists can create a more
detailed interpretation of the experiences of ancient humans (Hamilakis i). This new interest in the
sensory aspect of human culture brings a fascination with the types of foods that people consumed in
the past. With this in mind, a group of graduate students in the fields of archaeology, food history, and
gastronomy, at Boston University, collaborated to test if material remains can be used to recreate
ancient recipes. Through eating these foods, one can glimpse a part of the culture that ate the dish,
illustrating the power of taste, and demonstrating that archaeology can be used to create something
tangible for the public. This paper will focus on the research process for the mid 19th century brothel
site, located in Boston, and how the materials gathered during excavation were used to reconstruct the

  • 2. Atonement Theme Love Essay In Atonement, the theme of love is explored in a variety of different ways. McEwan explores many different kinds of love including romantic love, platonic love, self love and family love. One way that McEwan explores love in the novel is through letters. The epistolary form of the novel gives the readers an insight at what the characters are thinking and feeling, as they more profoundly express their feelings through their letters. For example, Robbie and Cecilia have expressed their feelings to eachother through letters since the earlier chapters of the novel, where Robbie sends an explicit letter to Cecilia (Chapter 8). Their letters continued even when Robbie went to prison and Dunkirk. Cecilia uses her words to tell Robbie that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These different kinds of love help to make the novel more complex and offer more viewpoints to the story. Family love is a great theme in the novel, and we see it in many forms. For example, we see it in the early chapters between Cecilia and Briony Cecilia and Briony have an extremely strong relationship that falls apart as the novel progresses. The memory of Cecilia comforting Briony in a nightmare It s only a dream. Come back in Chapter 3, Page 44 helps tell us about the relationship they have with eachother, and also helps to show how Briony has unconditional support and loyalty to her family. Briony s fault is that she cannot comprehend the idea that her siblings can be in any way sexual she fails to see that Cecilia could be in a consenting relationship with Robbie in the library, and she tries to get her brother Leon to provoke his admiration, and guide him away from a careless succession of girlfriends, and towards the right form of wife . This strong family love is shown through Briony being undeniably loyal to Cecilia as she calls herself Cecilia s protector and thinks a tragedy will bring them closer together. Everything she does is a step towards protecting her family. Family love is explored through all the characters, and the different relationships offer different viewpoints to the story Lola and Briony, Robbie and Grace, Emily and Briony...these relationships show pure and strong family love. ... • 3. The Impact Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906 The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and Recovery. What did the people of San Francisco suffer after the earthquake of 1906? In order to answer this question, we need to know what the San Francisco earthquake was. The San Francisco earthquake happened in 1906 with a magnitude of 7.8 and caused a fire that burned for 7 days. This was the biggest recorded earthquake in San Francisco. The foreshock started at 5:12am and 25 seconds later the earthquake started that lasted 40 to 60 seconds, with most San Franciscans asleep in rooms, they became trapped with only their hope to save them. The earthquake and fire of San Francisco in 1906 will go down as one of the worst earthquakes in the United States history. It s after affects can still be felt in the California area. The San Francisco earthquake caused quite a lot of damage in the area, but what is an earthquake? An earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates along a transform boundary and what plate is California sitting on? The Pacific Plate which is not connected to the North American plate and the plate boundary is a transform boundary. Earthquakes occur so often there that people say it is like a rainstorm that is ignored. The place where the Pacific Plate is grinding along with the North American Plate is called the San Andreas Fault. As stated before the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 which caused so much destruction a fire broke out. Nobody really knows where the fire started but it burned for 7 days and scorched over 500 city blocks leaving the once proud and powerful city into dust. The combination of the earthquake and fire is said to have killed Over 700 deaths by the earthquake and fire is now believed to be an understatement the total loss of life by a factor of 3 or 4. (The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.) Even before the earthquake people saw suspicious things with animals. For example, Lisa A. Chippendale in her book The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, quoted Sergeant Cook who stated The horses seemed skittish, frequently neighing and nervously pulling at their reins. Many people were asleep in the time of the shock. By the first shock some shot up and tried to get their clothes on, but their struggle was in vain, they could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I figured putting money towards efficiency would not only allow me to create more units, but it would also bring down the amount of wastage as to where increasing SCU would create more wastage and also make the efficiency upgrades that I would purchase less effective per dollar. This is likely because with more SCU, comes more equipment and more employees that need to be trained or upgraded with efficiency updates in order to improve production and productivity. Therefore, less units equals less distribution of upgrades. I essentially wanted to be an efficient company that could maintain a steadily increasing Share Holder Value with as few expenditures as possible, and it seemed to be working for a while. I also wanted to have a higher number of sales as it seemed the more sales I had, the less customers the competition had to sell to keeping their sales down a little bit. B. • 9. The Question Of Being Is The Darkest Of All Philosophy The question of being is the darkest in all philosophy. So concluded William James in thinking about that most basic of riddles: how did something come from nothing? The question infuriates, James realized, because it demands an explanation while denying the very possibility of explanation. From nothing to being there is no logical bridge, he wrote. In science, explanations are built of cause and effect. But if nothing is truly nothing, it lacks the power to cause. It s not simply that we can t find the right explanation it s that explanation itselffails in the face of nothing. This failure hits us where it hurts. We are a narrative species. The ancient Greeks suggested that empty space is filled with substance a plenum, an ether. Aristotle conceived of the ether as an unchanging fifth element, more perfect and heavenly in its invariance than earth, air, fire, or water. True nothingness was at odds with Aristotle s physics, which said that bodies rise up or fall down as dictated by their rightful place in the natural order of things. Nothingness, however, would be perfectly symmetric it would look the same from every angle rendering absolute spatial directions like up and down utterly meaningless. An ether, Aristotle figured, could serve as a kind of cosmic compass, an ultimate reference frame against which all motion could be measured. For those who abhorred a vacuum, the ether banished every last trace of it. The ancient ether stuck around for millennia until it was re imagined in the late 19th century by physicists like James Clerk Maxwell, who discovered that light behaves as a wave that always travels at a particular speed. What was waving, and speed relative to what? The ether was a handy answer, providing both a medium for light waves to travel through, and, as Aristotle originally imagined, a reference frame against which all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Taking a Look at Gang Violence Many American families share similar stories of their loved ones being murdered by violent street gang members. These victims often had nothing to do with the gangs or gang members that killed them. A street gang is a group of people who commonly involve themselves in heinous crimes such as murder, assault, drug dealing, robbery, and car theft. These gangs are present all over the nation and are starting to spread to other countries. It is imperative for the United States government to put a stop to gangs and gang violence. Ed Gottesman and Richard Brown agree that for a group to be considered a gang it needs six key elements: a collection of individuals, the use of symbols, special forms of communication, permanence, a sense of turf, and involvement in crime. Gottesman and Brown go on to say, What distinguishes a gang from other groups is its involvement in crime, which is often heavy and recognized as a key feature of membership. This means that all gangs are involved in crimes, the number one reason why the United States needs to put a stop to gang violence. Gangs form for four main reasons: a need for family and companionship, basic needs such as food, a higher social status or appeal, and protection. When there is a large migration or immigration of people, gangs tend to increase in size because there are more people looking for these four basic needs. During the 1950s to the 1970s, gangs grew greatly in the four regions of the United States, the East, Midwest, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evidently, the Industrial Revolution proposed change in the Northern way of life to a more opportunistic environment, but the Southern regions remained the same encompassed by the use of slavery for their own benefit. Moral tensions arose from the complications between the two regions, creating abolitionist groups and extremists to dictate an impending battle between the North and South. The Civil War was an inevitable feat due to northern extremism and the differing perspectives of proper leadership of both sides. Both regions believed their ideals were proper therefore causing this type of leadership as inconceivable at the time. Northern candidate, Abraham Lincoln was a strong proponent towards the unification of America whether it appeased the northern abolitionists or the southern plantation owner (Doc 4). Similarly Stephen Douglas proposed the idea of popular sovereignty as a means to unify the nation (Doc 5) . His ideals were more similar to the great compromisers Clay, Webster, and Calhoun who were deceased. All five of these men had one goal, to unify America, but the conflicting perspectives between Lincoln and Douglas lead to a stalemate, in which no decision was made to save the country. Thus the American Civil War became not an if but when? In a time of crisis, Congress did not prove to be a beneficiary towards the rehabilitation of the American Union. Indicated by the census of the two houses between 1849 1861, many decisions would become biased towards the Democratic Party due to their representation in government (Doc 3). Rather than coming to a consensus about the issue at hand, congress establishes an invisible line that indicates the divided North and South as free or slave states, fixating the battle between the North and ... The media allows the public to be involved and interested in what s happening in different aspects of celebrity entertainment. The influence the media has on celebrity and image selling is very effective in producing successful careers. Musicians are one of many aspects of entertainment that are impacted by the media. Possibly the biggest shift in music has come through social media through an increased level of interaction between musicians and fans (Evans). Now that we have social media it benefits the artist and the fans. The artist is able to broadcast, promote and share things that were not possible before. An example of this would be the artist can share their latest news, achievements or plans with their fans. The fans are able to keep up with the artist, be more interactive with them and communicate with them better. Snakes venoms are complex chemical mixtures of pharmacologically active compounds such as enzymes, peptides and proteins with specific chemical and biological activities (Ménez et al., 2006, Jiminez Porras, 1968), in addition to non protein components such as carbohydrates, lipids and metal ions. Snakes venoms are mostly reputed for their neurotoxic substances, which induce paralysis and death, and hemotoxic substances that have hemorrhagic effects (Greene, 1997, Jiminez Porras, 1968). • 18. The Pros And Cons Of Animal Welfare Did you know that 56 billion animals are slaughtered each year? People believe that farmers are abusing and causing stress on the animals. Farmers use confined feeding operations to maximize the production. By having the confined feeding operations, it gives the animals no room to graze. When they can t graze, it restricts the animal to move or to exercise ( On The Farm ). The animals are not given any pain relief during certain practices like castration or dehorning. Animal welfare is not needed in the farming aspect, because the animals are meant for food. In the 1970 s, animal welfarist got together and tried to sue farmers for being cruel and harming animals. The government created the right to farm laws. That law protected farmers rights when farming. Twelve states banned certain farm practices because they were believed to be inhumane. Those bans include, gestation crates for sows, veal crates for calves, and battery cages for chickens. All those states that banned the practices were small in the ag field. The farmers are saying that they are not hurting animals, they are protecting them. People that live in cities or that don t experience the farm work will say it is inhumane. Farmers are trying to make changes to stop these regulations. State Farm Bureaus are trying backing up the farmers. The regulations could ruin the agricultural business (Fifield). Farmers use the most efficient methods which lower the prices for the consumer. The other people would say that the most efficient way goes against the animal s welfare. When using the high welfare methods it raises the price of eggs by 18% which is about 49 cents per dozen. Walmart and McDonalds will be using only cage free eggs by 2025. That will increase the price of the eggs. They cages and crates are said to be safe and sanitary ways for egg production. Makes the price of food increase because the farmer can t have as many animals because it requires too much space to be humane (Fifield). Gestation crates are the safest way for a sow to give birth. • 19. Greek Columns And The Doric Order Of Greek Architecture Greek architecture has survived throughout history and plays a major role in many structures today. Some of the modern structures that resemble Greek styling and architecture are government buildings. By building some of our most important structures with Greek designs, it shows our current emphasis on Greek architecture. There are three distinct orders, or types, of architecture. These are the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. Possibly one of the most distinguished aspects supplied by Greek architecture is the column. Columns were prevalent in Greek society and were found in many of their temples and important structures such as the Parthenon. The first and most simplistic order of Greek architecture is the Doric order. According to the article, Doric Columns and the Doric Order of Classical Architecture, Doric architecture is characterized by columns that Doric columns are, stouter than those of the Ionic or Corinthian orders. Their smooth, round capitals are simple and plain compared to the other two Greek orders. The capital is the very top piece of the column that connects the column to the rest of the structure, or the entablature. Unlike other orders, Greek Doric columns did not have bases; instead the column was fixed directly on the foundation of the structure. This simplistic design was implemented on one of the most well known works of architecture from Ancient Greece, the Parthenon. The slight breeze and the overcast clouds provided a gray morning, which to some foreshadowed a sad and droopy day but I saw the hopeful rays of sunshine attempting to leak through the dull, gray bars that separated the warm sun from the cool ground. The lake house: a place where I enjoyed the fruits of having a friendship with the daughter of the family who owned the house. From wakeboarding to tubing to boat rides the lake offered all the amenities one could hope for in a fairly large body of water. Yet these forms of entertainment only amount to the smallest fraction of why the lake house is so integral to my contentment. The dock has a fine hardwood finish that prevents painful splinters, plenty of comfortable lawn chairs to sit in, an emerald green table where I have played countless hours of Settlers of Catan, and an American flag that flutters majestically in the wind. The view, needless to say, is breathtaking. In the chilly, gray mornings that accompany my lake house visits, I wake up early, amble to the dock, plop down on a comfortable lawn chair, and gaze out into the body of water that is Weiss Lake. • 22. Pathophysiology Of Diabetes Mellitus And Mellitus Diabetes Mellitus Nathalie Dao Med 2056 VN FT030 Diabetes Mellitus Research Paper Ms. Annabelle Anglo 3/16/2015 EXPLANATION OF PATHOPHYSIOLOGY The pathophysiology of the two types of Diabetes Mellitus are described by Schilling (2010). Type 1 Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus starts with a viral infection or other triggering condition that forms antibodies that destroy the beta cells within the pancreas. This causes the pancreas production of insulin to drop over time. Initially, the body uses the insulin that was already produced, but as the insulin decreases, the cells within the body are not able to receive and use the glucose. The sugar remains in the bloodstream after digestion and the negative effects of hyperglycemia become more damaging. With Type 1, about 90% or the beta cells are killed by the antibodies. Type 2 Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease caused by one or more of the following three factors. Impaired insulin production within the pancreas, so the body does not have enough to move the glucose into the tissues and cells. Incorrect glucose production in the liver. The cells resist the insulin, so it cannot attach to the correct receptors. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES MELLITUS, according to the American Diabetes Association (2015) the most basic symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 DM are: The three P s  Polyuria Urinating often and having to urinate frequently at night  Polydipsia Always feeling very ... It is something that calls for reflection coming to terms with the brute fact that human existence is attached to suffering. Suffering is ubiquitous. That is to say, suffering pervades all of human life. Therefore, all persons must accept suffering as a mere fact of existence. Suffering consists of, physical, mental and emotional suffering. For example, physical suffering would consist of having a disease, or getting into an injury such as a car accident. Mental suffering would consist of one who experiences depression, sadness and the like from the death of a loved one. Art, particularly commercial art such as film, is grounded and shaped by society s conscious and subconscious views. In addition to the patriarchal views Mulvey discusses in her paper, society also has ingrained ableist views that shape how people view the world and art. The idea of the castrated woman is central to Mulvey s argument. She argues that this castrated woman symbolises the castration threat by her real absence of a penis and stands in patriarchal culture as signifier for the male other . The Boston University Archaeology Department Essay On May 9th, 2016, the Boston University Archaeology Department held a public outreach event called, Eating Archaeology , where guests were served foods from four different time periods and places: Bronze age Mycenae, Bronze age China, Pre Columbian Mesoamerica, specifically the Aztecs, and mid 19th century Boston. The creation of these dishes was made possible through analyzing archaeological sites through the lens of the newly popularized sub field, archaeology of the senses, which studies how the materiality of the world contributes to and is influenced by how humans use their senses (Hamilakis 4). Through analyzing the bodily senses, archaeologists can create a more detailed interpretation of the experiences of ancient humans (Hamilakis i). This new interest in the sensory aspect of human culture brings a fascination with the types of foods that people consumed in the past. With this in mind, a group of graduate students in the fields of archaeology, food history, and gastronomy, at Boston University, collaborated to test if material remains can be used to recreate ancient recipes.
