2. What Was The Expansion Of The Westward Expansion
The Westward Expansion Transcontinental Railroad
Didn t the traveling time from coast to coast use to take months? Aren t you glad you
don t have to take hazardous and slow wagons currently? During the Industrial
Revolution, many factors contributed to the rapid expansion of the West. Before the
transcontinental railroad was fully completed, the travel time from coast to coast was
costly and took months through very troublesome terrain. Even though there were
several constructive results from inventions, there were also dire consequences. The
improvements made were great but, they came with substantial economic and
political costs. One of these great improvements was the construction of the railroad.
This helped many Americans to travel west in a week instead months. Towns sprung
up all along the railways, increasing the population of the west dramatically.
Why build the transcontinental railroad? Growth of the west coast. The west coast
had an abundance of gold and silver. The trip to the west would become shorter.
Business would rise with the connection of the east and west. The solidification of the
Union would become possible. Last but not least the achievement of the Manifest
Destiny.
The transcontinental railroad is accepted as one of the greatest accomplishments
during the 19th century. In a petition submitted to the U.S. Congress on Jan. 29,
1845, New York merchant Asa Whitney proposed one of the most audacious ventures
in American history: the construction of a railroad from Lake Michigan to the Pacific
Ocean, spanning two thirds of the North American continent. In bold and stirring
words, describing how such a rail network would revolutionize the entire commerce
of the world, Whitney urged the federal government to underwrite the ambitious
project. (Visions of Empire). The Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 was authorized and
passed, the railroad companies began to build a transcontinental railroad. Connecting
over 2,000 miles of land, crossing deserts and mountains. It s an amazing achievement
since it lowered the traveling time to just a few days compared to the months.
After a long six years, the first United States transcontinental railroad was completed.
The ceremony date was on the golden
3. Comparison of Hinduism to Christianity
Hinduism is one of the earliest religons that is still practiced around the world. It
seeks to answer the same questions that Christianity does, but arrives at different
answers. It seeks truth, but fails to find it. Hinduism seeks to ask the question of
where do we come from? This question is not easily answerable. Because of the
nature of Hinduism, everything is in a cycle. There is no beginning and there is no
end. Hinduism also does not have a set of defined rules because of it s views on
multiple views and believes. Because of this, we see a few different origins for
human kind, but Hinduism fails to give a definite definition.
Hinduism would next ask the question of Identity. What does it mean to be human?
Ultimately Hinduism has a rather selfish view of this, even if it believes in peace
and harmony. It looks at people as all part of the same god essence . Humanities
purpose is to be brought back to nirvana. It is me centric. You try over and over to
live the perfect life. There is no grace for the things you do. Ultimately you are
responsible for living the perfect life and reaching Nirvana, a place where you are
one with the god essence .
So what is the meaning of all of this? Humanity must get to Moksha, which is
known as the release. It is a release from wanting and desiring. It is where you are
basically liberated from your humanity. It is the Hindu kind of salvation.
So what about Morality? How do we know what is right or wrong? Hinduism does
not really

Columbia. Lack of money for extracurricular activities amongst underprivileged
kids Affordable housing in college communities and beyond Gender inequality
amongst salary 2) In a couple of paragraphs, explain the issue on which you d like
to focus. Why is it particularly newsworthy for Columbia? I would like to focus on
the lack of money for extracurricular activities amongst underprivileged kids. I think
this is a very important issue that is never talked about in the news and one that
needs to be brought to life. When most people get to the extracurricular activities
section of a college application, they just list all the things that they were able to
do and don t put any thought in it. It looks great, because it shows that you can not
only do your school work, but balance other activities as well. But what we don t
understand is that many kids never get that chance to participate in these activities,
and therefore they don t get to fill out that section and they get left behind. Take
football for a small example. It looks great on a resume because it is time
consuming and takes a lot of willpower. It shows that you can work with a team
and if you are a distinguished athlete with some awards, you might even get some
money to go play it in college. But the sport is expensive, a cost that some families
can t afford to take on. It is estimated that the gear alone costs $650, not to

The fourth site was Pasadena in 1993 which was more challenging due to its
further location and was not an immediate success. Gordon Biersch attributed the
sluggish start of this site to the low visibility of the location. However, this did not
stop them from moving forward and in November 1994 Gordon Biersch opened in
Honolulu which quickly became the top grossing restaurant in Hawaii. The next
project was bottling Gordon Biersch signature beer and retailing it. This had three
biggest challenges: this project was entirely Gordon s baby and demanded time and
attention; secondly the freshness of the bottled beer versus the freshly brewed was
an issue for which they decided the beer would have a shelf life no longer than three
months. Thirdly and the most exciting challenge was the head to head competition
with other microbreweries and premium beers. Despite the tough competitive
environment, Gordon Biersch aimed to achieve 11% of the market in three years (by
1996). This retail venture required huge investment, thus they decided to start small
to prove to the investors that they could pull it off. Gordon Biersch had extensive
growth plans of opening over 100 restaurants across the nation with in 8 to 10 years.
However, the growth they envisioned demanded a lot of time, dedication and
expertise. They debated upon three different organizational approaches (1)
6. North American Fighter
At the end of the year 1939 a possible full scale war in Europe was a major concern.
The British Royal Air Force was trying to find ways to strengthen their fighters. In
1940 they came up with the Curtiss P 40. The British approached North American
set to have them build it. But Dutch Kendelberger (the president of North American)
offered to build an entirely new advanced fighter using the same Allison V 1710 39
engine used on the P 40. North American s only previous fighter experience was with
the NA 50A, but Dutch collaborated with J.L. Lee Atwood to formulate an outline for
the project. The British agreed on the new type, NA 73X, with only the precondition
that a prototype be accessible within 120 days. North American... Show more content

7. The Threat Of Nuclear Deterrence
Historically the strategy of Nuclear Deterrence appears to have been an effective
one. There have been no major conflicts involving the global super powers since
World War Two. As Ward Wilson states it has often been asserted as fact that nuclear
deterrence works, that it kept us safe for fifty years during the Cold War, and that
because of the peculiar characteristics of mutual assured destruction, it provides
unique stability in a crisis.
However whether this was down to effective nuclear deterrence or other factors
such as war weariness or economic concerns, is difficult to determine. In addition,
the sheer destructive power of nuclear weapons makes nuclear deterrence a risky
strategy. One that not only effects a single nation state, but the world as a whole
and global population at large. While on closer inspection the effectiveness of the
strategy of nuclear deterrence is not as clear cut or as easy to assess as it may first
appear.
As a military theory nuclear deterrence gained increasing prominence during the
Cold War. As economist and professor of nuclear strategy Thomas Shelling stated,
deterrence is a threat ... intended to keep and adversary from doing something.
While Kenneth Waltz described deterrence as achieved not through the ability to
defend but through the ability to punish , it is a coercive strategy. You avert an
attack on yourself through possession of the very weapons you fear an attack from.
Waltz also went on to say, the message of a

9. Why Does Free Will Exist
Traditionally defined as man s ability to voluntarily and consciously choose for
themselves, free will is often a central characteristic of man that separates him from
nature. Philosophers and theologians have touted this ability to choose as a
foundation on which society s conception of morals, guilt, and justice rest, and,
consequently, have debated whether it truly exists or whether it is simply an illusion
of a predetermined outcome. Recently, with the advent of science, the discussions of
free will now include the field of biology. Modern studies on the human brainhave
provided convincing evidence for biological determinism, the notion that the biology
of each person predetermines how he or she will act. For example, the 1999 tests of
Benjamin Libet and his subsequent papers on free will challenge its conventional
definition, suggesting that actions begin with an unconscious initiation, that they
have the ability to be consciously vetoed, and... Show more content on

tested the effects of stimulating different sites in the brain and whether actions and
could be separated from will. Consisting of subjects undergoing brain surgery while
awake, Movement Intention after Parietal Cortex Stimulation in Humans illustrates
how electrical signals regarding movements arise in one part of the brain; whereas,
those signals pertaining to intent or will, i.e. the conscious desire to act arise in
another. Desmurget et al. activated the parietal cortex, creating in the subject the
perception of movement. However, no action was performed in actuality (Desmurget
et al., 2009). Similarly, Desmurget et al. then stimulated the premotor cortex, causing
the subjects to act, yet the subjects were unaware of these actions, thinking they had
not moved (Desmurget et al., 2009). This ability to separate perception or intent of
movement and actual motion underlines a disconnect between will and

Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans have been faced with many social injustices
in the past; these include police brutality, racism, discrimination, poor housing
condition and many more. After a time they grew tired and decided to take action
against these injustices. This led many of them to became part of a social movements,
fighting for a change which were successful . A few of these movements included the
ChicanoMovement which involved Mexican Americans; they use boycotting, and
their manifesto, El Plan De Aztlan to fight against social injustice and also to fight
for nationalism and self determination. It was said to be one of the most successful

The first step the Young Lords took was cleaning the street of the Puerto Ricans
neighborhoods which had not been swept in weeks. After cleaning the streets the
sanitation workers refused to take up the bags that contained the trash from the street.
This prompted the Young lords to blocked the roads with the trash and also
branching out and blocking other areas. This prevented the buses from moving which
led to the city money for no one could take the bus.
These two scenes from the Chicano movement and the Young lord s movement were
similar in the sense that they use the strategy of prevent business owner and the city
from making money. The Chicanos went about this by boycotting, and also getting
other people in different states and around the world to not purchase Victoria
grapes. The Young Lords on the other hand blocked the streets, because of this bus
companies could not make money since the people could not take the bus. Both
groups knew that money is the paramount of America, so in order to get what they
wanted which was an end to the social unfairness. They had to come up with
political strategies that would prevent business owner and the city to lose
money, once they kept on losing money, they would see that something had to be
done. The difference revolved around what they were fighting against during the
specific scene. During the scene in Cesar Chavez s film, the Mexican Americans
were fighting against the low wages workers were earning and also the

Beautiful Boy Application Assignment For decades the War on Drugs have aimed
towards extricate people from the harmful effects of drugs. Throughout the course
we have seen how drug use effects not just the user, but everyone around them as
well as the arguments towards legalization of drugs. One of the best ways to
identify with how drugs affect the user is to read to Kurt Cobain s lyrics that are
presented in the Beautiful Boy book, they read as follows I m not like them; But I
can pretend; The sun is gone; But I have a light; The day is done; But I m having
fun; My heart is broke; But I have some glue; Help me inhale; And mend it with
you; We ll float around; And hang out on clouds; Then we ll come down; And I ll
have a hangover (Sheff, p.45 46). The point of this song and what Kurt Cobain is
saying is that he is broken but the glue that keeps him together are drugs because
they take away his pain, when he says We ll float around; And hang out on clouds
(Sheff, p.45) he is referring to the feeling of being high and not being able to feel

12. The Importance Of My Family Traditions
Throughout life many families develop habits that they continue each year. These
habits are known as traditions and many families have them. One thing I find when
asked what is unique of my family, is the fact that we have many traditions and are
constantly finding new habits we form into traditions. Traditions around the holidays
are common for many families, as well as for my familyalso. Many of the traditions
that my family have are around Easter and Christmas, but there are also many more
that bring us together throughout the year.
Each year my family has a big Easter celebration. Growing up we would wait
anxiously while the older kids and adults would hide the plastic Easter eggs stuffed
with candy and money. When the front door opened we raced out onto my
grandparents farm to find as many eggs as we could. As we got older the egg
hunting was just not as fun so my grandmother suggested that we do a decorating
contest. We could do anything we wanted to the eggs as long as we used the egg
base. We still continue on the egg hunt for the little ones, but often find ourselves
trying to add on to replace the missing piece of it. Even just this last Easter we
added on to our fun festivities. We divided into teams and did an egg scavenger
hunt. We all loved it and have decided to make it an annual tradition.
For Christmas the constant traditions are no different. My family loves Christmas
and enjoys getting to spend the time together. For us the celebration starts early, as
13. Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely Essay
Absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely. Absolute power corrupts absolutely in
many ways. Firstly, having too much power could change your actions in many
ways. Secondly, having a lot of power could also change your thoughts or ways of
thinking.Thirdly, it can also get out of hand or out of control if you have too much
power. Some people, with too much power, use it to do bad things. On the other hand,
others use it to do good.Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
One way that absolute power corrupts absolutely is if someone has a lot of power
and it can change their actions. For example, when Hitler rose to power he had so
much power he almost wiped out a whole population of Jewish people. He could
have used his power for something good but, he instead used his power to kill
people. If someone has too much power they might use it to hurt people.Another
example is in The Wave when the wave members started to hurt people who didn t
join.Like when David pushed Laurie to the ground because they were arguing about
the Wave. The people in the wave also hurt a kid and he was Jewish.Just like Hitler
killed Jews the members that were part

The Simpsons as an icon can be analyzed with semiotics. They are symbolic,

american family with each character in the show representing another symbol
separately. They take from real life, put a twist on the details and then feed it back to

The drug court is specialized and designed for adults, who are not violent but who
have problems with substance abuse, where they are placed in a supervised intensive
treatment program as an alternative sentence of their offense. This can be achieved
thanks to the effort that the judicial power has achieved in coordination with the
legal defense, conditional freedom, social services, etc. The main goal of the drug
court is to reduce the use of drugs and so that criminal offenses are not repeated.

completed his program, he offered to give him a ride. That seemed a very nice gesture.
Personally, it was really a fabulous experience, where now I can say or comment
with others about how the drug court system really works for offenders with drug
abuse. Overall, attending the meeting before the court session began was very
helpful in order to better understand how the program works, and how it is
assigned to each individual. In this meeting we could hear the judge, prosecutor,
therapist, detectives and probation officers, etc, reviewing each case of the people
who are in the program. Each case of these people is reviewed, regarding the goals,
education, work, family, etc. where they establish concern or happiness for the
progress of each person.
In conclusion, I liked and enjoyed very much to see how these people who work in
the court have the same goal of helping these individuals to get out of drugs in
order to lead a healthier life. Each of the members of the court are really involved
not only because it is their job, but they mark a difference in the lives of these
individuals, showing them that they really care and expect them to succeed in the

Life...
Authors anthropomorphize animal characters to allow readers to fully understand an
animal s actions or thoughts. By doing so, the reader is able to comprehend why an
animal does a certain action or how an animal behaves towards a human or another
animal. One novel that employs anthropomorphism of animals is Yann Martels Life
of Pi. In the novel, Pi Patel, the main character, is stranded on a boat with a variety of
animals. Pi then relates his daily experiences with these animals throughout his
journey across the Pacific Ocean, especially with a tiger named Richard Parker.
Based on a through reading and analysis of the novel, the use of anthropomorphism
is integral to Pi surviving his experience on the open water because it allows Pi to
understand how animal behavior can help him survive at sea.
Pi anthropomorphizes a zebra to show how weakness cannot be exhibited on a
stranded lifeboat. Through his anthropomorphizing, Pi illustrates the dangers of
being weak and dependent on the sea, and how important it is to be independent
and strong. When Pi fell into the lifeboat, one of the first animals he saw was a
zebra. Pi noticed that the zebra had a broken leg and was unable to move. Pi
reasoned that if the zebra was unable to get up and move around, it would be
quickly eaten by the predator animals that were also on the lifeboat. Pi said, It lay
near the stern, where it had fallen, listless, but its stomach was still panting and its
eyes were still moving, expressing terror

Australia has an interesting form of government, but their economy is very strong.
Australia s government is a constitutional monarchy. This means the Australian
constitution decides how the country should be governed. The Australian economy is
very strong. It is one of the world s richest, most developed countries. Its wealth has
come from farming and mining, unlike other countries whose wealth comes from
manufactured goods. Australiasolely depends on its mines and farms to produce goods
that will later be exported. Australian transportation is the same as American
transportation. They use cars, buses, trains, ferries, planes and boats to get around.
The most common form of transportation is by car. In modern day Australia, people

The typical episode of the critically acclaimed, indie darling, sitcom 30 Rock
focuses on the lives of the writers, producers, executives and love interests of those
involved in the production of a fictional sketch comedy television show called TGS
with Tracy Jordan. 30 Rock is widely known as a show that deals with race, gender
and class issues from multiple, humorous perspectives. Yet watching Season Five,
Episode Twenty, a viewer could grow uncomfortable at the racial generalizations.
The episode is entitled Queen of Jordan and is intended to parody the Real

The shows are aware of the excess of their characters. In following the consumerist
lifestyles, it does not validate or idolize them, but instead provokes populist scorn
on these women and their failures (Lee and Moscowitz, p. 80). The shows
critiques and demonizes women specifically, which, in this setting, is deeply
intertwined with class through their use of the Bravo wink. Bravo winks when it
showcases the irony in a scene for the viewer. Bravo executive, Andy Cohen,
explained the practice as, Trying to let the audience in on the fun of the story. We
wink at the audience when someone says, I m the healthiest person in the world
and then you see them ashing their cigarette ( For Housewives, p. AR24). The fun
Cohen describes is setting up cultural expectations of gender and class behavior
only to have them violated so the audience can laugh at the housewives
shortcomings as both socialites and mothers. The Real Housewives franchise is
already self aware enough to be a show about, rich women to crass to be classy, too
superficial to be nurturing and too self obsessed to be caring (Lee and Moscowitz, p.
64). Because of this reflexive critique, 30 Rock s criticism is of race and the medium
of reality television is more poignant the violation of the expectation of class from
the elite is already ridiculed.

23. Reap What You Sow in Silas Marner by George Eliot Essay
The definition of fate is the development of events beyond a person s control. It is
regarded as something determined by a supernatural power, but I believe otherwise.
In fact, I believe the exact opposite. I believe that people do in fact have the power
to manipulate their fate; Based on the good or bad choices they ve made in the past.
The novelSilas Marnerby George Eliot, helps to explain this. Through the actions of
three major characters Dunstan Cass, Godfrey Cass, and Silas Marner. These
characters were chosen because they all made good or bad choices throughout the
novel with a clear punishment or reward; Or in other words these characters show
how they control their fate based on previous actions or choices. To begin with,...

If he never made the choice of robbing Silas, he never would ve fell into the pit.
This is only what he deserves for being selfish and full of spite. Dunstan clearly
shows that you can control your fate based on the good or bad choices you make.
Obviously, Godfrey s choices determined his fate. Godfrey had the choice to tell
the truth. He was given this opportunity during breakfast with his father. Instead of
telling his father the real reason why he gave the rent money to Dunstan, he says, I
wouldn t have spent the money myself, but Dunsey bothered me, and I was a fool
and let him have it (69). He could ve told the truth and relieve himself of Dunstan.
Next, Godfrey had the choice to admit that Eppie is his child. This chance arrived
at Silas s cottage when he took a look at Molly Farrens body. The right thing to do
there was to take Eppie from Silas like a good father would ve. Instead, he says to
Silas, Let me give you something towards finding it clothes (120). Godfrey was
thinking only of getting Eppie out of the way, so that he could continue courting
Nancy Lammeter. He put himself over his own daughter just to get what he wants.
All of the sudden, 16 years later, Godfrey goes to ask Eppie to live with him. Eppie
declined his request with all due respect. As she says, Thank you, ma am thank you,

Evaluation of The Silence Of The Lambs
The film which I am evaluating is called The Silence of the Lambs and is based on
Thomas Harris novel and is directed by Jonathan Demme. The film was shot in
Pittsburgh and is set in West Virginia. In the making of this film careful research
was carried out in bringing each character to life especially Jame Buffalo Bill
Gumb. This included the actors being at crime scenes and viewing files about
previous serial killers in order to fit into their characters properly. Jonathan Demme
cleverly blended together different characteristics from other mass murderers in order
to make Buffalo Bill realistic and fearsome. In the film Psycho Norman Bates uses ...

provides various selections to choose from, including: the human evolution summary,
timeline, hall of skulls, and their perspectives. Likewise, the humanevolutionpage
describes the fossil hominids and their origins. The author recapitulates the hominid
family, which consists of Homo, Australopithecus, and Ardipithecus.
Correspondingly, the human evolutiontimeline page includes six distinct topics that
follow a chronological story on how each option started from beginning to end.
The first alternative focuses on the newest hominids, which are facts from the
artist on what the hominids may have looked like. The next topic was based on the
Ardipethecines, a specie that lived in a time period from about four and a half
million years ago. Although there are four more choices available, the most
interesting option was the Gracile Australopithecines. The Gracile
Australopithecine appears to be a half human and half animal specie that lacks
muscle and has a large jaw. In addition, the next page available on the archaeology
source is the hall of skulls, which includes a precise description on ten distinct
skulls. To sum up, the final selection accessible for viewers is the perspectives
option. This choice allows the observer to see each of the author s point of view on

28. The Importance of Delegation
The importance of Delegation Delegation is a way to appropriately and consistently
provide direction to a staff. By delegating properly, managers can teach employees
new skills and expertise to help them to be more productive and instill a sense of self
reliance, improving morale and motivation (Wikipedia, 2006). As a manager, you
must assess your staff s current abilities and their potential to accept and complete
assignments through established guidelines. A manager must know how to plan and
coordinate a variety of activities and how to monitor progress. Delegation brings into
play many managementfunctions planning, organizing, coordinating, motivating,
communicating, and leading. Setting goals while delegating can be beneficial to...

It s important to understand why a manager is reluctant to delegate so that the
individual can face those weak areas. There are times a manager may feel the
transfer of a task involves a certain degree of risk. As a manager your staff may also
be thinking about the risk; they are afraid they may be criticized if they should
fail. As a manager you could be reluctant to delegate because you are afraid the
employee may make mistakes or that they think it takes to much time to delegate.
The manager may feel that completing the task themselves would be more efficient
or feel they would lose control if they delegate. When overcoming this weakness a
manager should try to start off by choosing projects or tasks carefully to make sure
they are balancing the risk with the potential rewards. This will prepare the manager
for greater responsibility and higher levels of experience.
The manager could give the project or assignment to an employee who they feel can
get it done with little or no direction at all. They may have to educate their staff on
the task to be completed, but in the long run the manager will be able to pass work to
others with little guidance at all.
The manger could also sit down and work out a plan of action as to how they plan
on delegating the tasks and assignments. Planning out tasks or projects to be
completed and how the manger will organize those things will help the manger
visualize the processes to get the job done. The plan could include who
29. The Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt
The Muslim Brotherhood has been part politics in Egypt for more than 80 years. It
was originally formed by Hassan al Banna in 1928. The Muslim Brotherhood is a
combination religious and political group based on the belief that Islam is not just a
religion, but a way of life. It dictates a separation from secularism, returning to the
rules of the Quran based on healthy families, communities, and states. The
brotherhood focused on two key principles. They are (1), the introduction of the
Islamic Sharia or way of life or principles, by controlling the affairs of state and
society, and (2), working to achieve unification of the Islamic countries and states,
mainly among the Arab states, and liberating them from foreign imperialism. The
group concentrated on religion, education and social services. As its membership
grew, it moved into the political sphere, organizing protests against the Egyptian
government. The Brotherhood is the oldest and largest opposition group in Egypt. It
has had widespread support among Egypt s middle classes, and its members control
many of the country s professional organizations. Up until 2011, under Egyptian law,
it banned all parties based solely on religion. Sayyid Qutb, a member of the Muslim
Brotherhoodin the 1950s and 1960s, developed the doctrine of jihad, and the radical
group Hamas. It is believed to be an offshoot of the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood.
Egypt s Islamists and the Muslim Brotherhood have a history of perseverance.

Society s Influence
Fashion and the film industry are two huge influences on societal expectations that
women display their bodies sexually.
The sexual revolution liberated women from the

Doing Gender
Many feminist theorists believe that an individual is labeled at birth as a member of
a sex category, either male of female, and from that point on, is held to acting
accordingly.
Gender is not something that one has or something that one is; rather, it is something
that one does.
Gender as Social Structure

Gender as Social Structure
By assigning people to one or two categoriesmale or female society has created
difference between them.
Risman feels that genders strongest influence is found at the interactional level, and
therein lies the deepest liability for the continuation of inequality in American family
life
Relevancy
Feminism can be defined as a social movement and an ideology in support of the
idea that a larger share of scarce resources should be allocated to women. Feminist
believe that women should enjoy the same rights in society as men and that should
share equity in society s opportunities.
32. Summary Of Howard Nemerov s The Vacuum
Some say losing someone you have a deep love for is equivalent to having the
human heart physically removed from the body without anesthesia. It is extremely
difficult to put the exact feeling into words because there are too many words that do
not even begin to grasp it; agonizing, calamitous, distressing, poignant cannot even
come close to explain it. However, Howard Nemerovattempted the trying task and
created the poem The Vacuum in 1955. This poem explained deathin a way that all of
us endeavor to. The mood, figurative speech, and setting of the poem argues that
death is not only hard for the person dying, but that it is harder for those who are
left behind. Dictionary.com has the word isolation defined as, the complete
separation from others of a person suffering (insert citation here). Nemerov could
not explain it better as he set the mood of the poem by writing the speaker s
perspective in lines 1 2: The house is so quiet now the vacuum cleaner sulks in the
corner closet . The speaker obviously cut themselves off from outside contact for a
long period of time. Nemerov references back and forth in this quote because just as
the vacuum sits alone in the closet, the speaker is alone in the house. Dust is
collecting and there is old filth everywhere causing an environment of darkness and
grief. A modern reader can relate to this section because this sadness is an
unavoidable experience in life and that life itself is dirty and impure. Personification is

If your garage door is bent or otherwise needs to be replaced, you may think that

The liver is an important organ which operates the bodys energy metabolism. It acts

it is split in to acetyl CoA and oxaloacetate by ATP citrate lyase. Oxaloacetate
would be reduced to malate which is then converted in to pyruvate by the malic
enzyme which relases NADPH. The pyruvate is then recycled back in to the

pieces she smacked into his outstretched hand. It took me a moment to respond,
both taken with the notion that I was staring down at the striking, scowling girl
from the liquor store parking lot and entirely unsure of what I wanted to begin
with. My eyes slid over her as I cupped a menu in my hand and struggled with the
options, aware that her eyes bored into my forehead as I let my gaze fall
downward. I felt so pressured by her presence that I didn t bother to read any of the
item descriptions and I answered her lamely, fidgeted in my summer suit, and slowly
lost my mind right there in front of her.
42. Letter To Daughter Case Analysis
It is with great grief that I write you this letter in regards to the passing of your
daughter. I wish that my sincere condolences would suffice during your painful
trials, however, considering the circumstance, neglecting to explain to you the
reasoning for the actions that took place on the ship would be unjust on my part.
My dear friends, you are at least owed an explanation for the tragic sacrifice of your
daughter, of which I intend to give you. The motives behind the mission in question
were as follows; 6 colonist nursing terminal illnesses awaited the serum carried in the
EDS dispatched ship with great urgency. The problem arose from the fact that the
Stardust, alike all EDS vessels, contains no more fuel than needed to arrive safely at
its destination. For this reason any surplus of weight that has not been... Show more

The fact of the matter is Marilyn put her needs ahead of a law she did not
understand and must assume moral culpability. However, this is not a matter of
retribution. When faced with such difficult circumstances, we must seek to bring
about the least amount of pain to the greatest amount of people, and when
reviewing the reasonable consequences to be expected; the death of these 7 men,
against the additional hours of life we could have given Marilyn by allowing her
to stay we made the practical choice. Please do not resent Mr. Barton, I must urge
that he did everything in his power to save your daughter within reason and
exhausted all possibilities. He even increased the speed of ship to decrease fuel
consumption and bide her more time. Inevitably, there was no other choice but to
jettison Marilyn. I assure you this was not easy for him. While we did what we must,
we still extend apologies and sincerest regret that the situation occurred. Measures
will be taken to prevent such things from happening again. We hope you can come to
terms with our
43. Persuasive Essay On Nuclear Power Plants
Despite the fact the countries continue to increase the production of nuclear energy,
my position is that new nuclear power plants should not continue to be built. The
current use of nuclear power should be carefully evaluated with a plan to slowly
decrease production throughout the world. The negative implications to the
environment and economy support my position. The production of nuclear energy is
not as safe and clean as some say that it is. The Oxford Research Group released a
report providing evidence that supports this point. It is clear that nuclear powerplants
do not produce a lot of carbon dioxide when they operate, but it is the mining of
uranium and the storing of waste that produces the carbon dioxide pollution.... Show

There is yet to be a full proof way to store this toxic material (examiner.com).
Disposal of the high level nuclear waste that comes from nuclear power plants
continues to be a big problem. It has been challenging and costly to find safe ways
to store this waste. According to a report from the U.S National Academy of
Sciences, it will take 3 million years for radioactive waste stored in the U.S. as of
1983 to decay to background levels (thinkquest.org). Who wants this amount of
waste stored in the environment where they live? Currently in the U.S. nuclear
power plants produce 3,000 tons of this high level waste each year
(thinkquest.org). If nuclear power continues to be produced, this amount of waste
will only continue to increase, causing a bigger dilemma as to what to do with the
waste. As the waste is removed from the plant it still contains a high level of
radiation. Exposure to radiation whether it occurs in the moving process or leakage
from storage not only has a negative impact on the environment but also can pose a
major health threat to humans. Based on the level of exposure, symptoms to humans
can range from nausea and headaches to damage of nerve cells, loss of white blood
cells and even death (think .org). The potential risk of exposure is not worth human
life.
The use of nuclear power can have several negative impacts on the economy. The
use of nuclear power can be costly. The building of the plants can cost between $12
$18
44. The Influence Of Culture In Hamlet
The cultures in which the author and that of the Tiv affects the meaning of Hamlet to
the respective audiences. Hamlet is a famous play by shakespeare and we all
understand it well in our culture, but in the culture of the Tiv they misunderstood
many things. They would tell Laura Bohannan to talk to her elders when she went
back home because they believe that elders know more and they would explain it to
her better. Cultureis the main factor that decides your opinion on things. If a word
means something else in your culture that s how you interpret it in someone s work.
Before telling the story, Laura Bohannan believes that Hamlet has only one
interpretation. As she tells the Tivelders the story, she notices that they misinterpret
many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly, Tiv elders believe that it s alright for chiefs to have many wives. Whereas, in
the Western culture chiefs only have one wife. In the end Bohannan changes her
mind that Hamlet only has one interpretation because of her experience with the Tiv
elders. Overall, they gain knowledge on how another culture thinks of something.
Equally important, art is subject to those viewing it. Art impacts people and
makes them have their own interpretation of each piece of art. In the Shakespeare
in the Bush article, the elders did not view the piece of art/literature as good as
Western culture views it. The reason that they didn t see it as good as we see it is
because their interpretation of it is different than ours. They don t agree with parts
of what it says. Art is changed by those viewing it, which means that art has many
interpretations and culture has a huge impact on how we view things. In the article
Principles for Interpreting Art, it says that The artist s interpretation of his or her
own work of art, if the artist has one and expresses it, is one interpretation among
many, and it is not necessarily more accurate or more acceptable just because it is
the artist s interpretation. This shows that art has many interpretations and not just
one. Overall, if one person sees something in one way, another person can view it in
a completely different way. This reminds me of the two versions that we read about
in class on Dennis Rodman. One version
45. Formation Mechanism And Death Of The Chimneys
The geosystem to be explored is specifically the formation mechanism and death of
the chimneys. Hydrothermal vents usually occurs along tectonically active regions
and are characterized by geothermally heated water exiting from the sea bed. Cold
water percolates through the sea bed and travels through the bedrock. This cold water
becomes heated geothermally and dissolves metals and sulfides from surrounding
rocks. The enriched hot water, superheated to on average 350вЃ°C, is buoyant and
escapes through an opening in the sea floor. The vent fluid exits the sea floor with a
flow rate up to several meters per second. As the hot enriched water comes into
contact with the cold sea water, a precipitationreaction occurs and the dissolved
metals and sulfides precipitate out along the vent opening. As more fluid is ejected
from the vent, the taller the chimney grows. Although many vents are depicted to
have a single vent pipe through the chimney, they are actually branched, as shown
in figure 1 (Tivey and Delaney 1986). Black smokers specifically are characterized
by the black soot filled plume, primarily consisting of pyrrhotite, sphalerite, pyrite,
and traces of cubanite, rapidly flowing upwards from the seabed. Hydrothermal
vents are ephemeral by nature, and flow will stop randomly and permanently, leading
to the death of the chimney. Figure 1: On the left is the often used simplification of a
single piped vent chimney from BBCNews, while the right is a more accurate
