The Old British Empire s Influence On Modern Museums Essay
The sun never sets on the British Empire is a phrase that is known all too well in regards to British
Imperialism and colonization spanning over Africa, Asia, North America, Australia, and Europe. Over
the years, England in particular, has had a major influence across the world as a global superpower by
sharing its own technology, culture, religion and more. But as much as they have shared, they have
also taken to enrich their own society with artifacts, designs, foods, and other aspects of the foreign
culture. This dynamic between Great Britain and each colonized country has immensely shaped
modern British museums by expanding the content in museums as it relates to imperialism,
diversifying the artifacts collected from other countries, and the influences it has had on British
society shown through museums collections. The old British Empire s influence on modern museums
also raised many issues for contemporary curators and audiences concerning museums glorifying
imperialism, the ethically of keeping these collected artifacts, and if the museums have a subtle
underlying imperialistic bias.
To understand why imperialism is such a prominent theme in British museums it is important to
understand the history of British Imperialism in the first place. In the 15th and 16th centuries Portugal
and Spain were leading imperialist powers, sailing the seas and discovering new land and becoming
wealthier from the treasures these places held. After learning of the success

Reel Injun Stereotypes
Reel Injun and Misrepresentation and Native Stereotyping on Screen
Misrepresentation of Natives on screen throughout the 20th century has had an adverse effect on them.
Whether it was positive or negative stereotypes, Natives felt the effect of Hollywood and began to lose
their self identity, their honour, and their pride. Reel Injun takes a look at how movies have defined an
entire race and also documents the rebirth of the Native identity after decades of destructive
Hollywood movies by interviewing notable Native actors, actresses, and activists. By doing so,
director Neil Diamond hopes to silence Hollywood stereotypes and get Hollywood to properly
represent the Native people.
Hollywood s early depictions of Natives consisted of tribesmen and noble savages who are in tune
with Nature. Films such as The Silent Enemy portray these stereotypes on screen with actors like
Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance being shown as tribesmen who are very noble Natives. Although
these stereotypes are positive, they are still stereotypes nonetheless. These stereotypes have caused ...

Stagecoach a movie that is widely accepted as the most damaging movie for the Native identity helped
to illustrate this image to viewers at the time. As a result, many Americans believed Natives were all
uncivilized and violent, leading to nationwide stereotyping and prejudice. The Indian was the enemy
of America as a result. Stagecoach also shows Natives being hunted like animals, which sends the
image of them being non human and thus they should be treated as such. Stagecoach and movies like
it mispresented Natives for decades and caused a loss of identity amongst the Native community
because Natives were dressed the same throughout various films. It was not until the 1970s and 1980s
where Natives were properly represented on

Avoid Dietary Patterns
Dietary pattern is essentially an important influence of healthy choices. Diets have various purposes
from altering negative eating habits, promoting weight loss, or sustaining a balanced lifestyle. It is the
basic foundation that impacts the choices we make, whether it is to enhance energy levels or help
improve certain health problems. Based on what the Sardinian and Mediterranean share when it comes
to their diet are small portions, plant based meals, especially legumes, about a few ounces of meat
consumption, and to drink alcohol moderately. They are both similar to the Paleo Diet, highlighting
fruit and vegetable consumption that helps many by providing vitamins, minerals and fiber. Unlike the
Sardinian and Mediterranean diet, legumes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unhealthy choices of processed meats have been linked with cancer, specifically colon cancer. If
everybody consumes more meat, the environmental impact of raising animals over growing plant
crops would need to be considered. The Paleo Diet excludes any form of grains and dairy. Grains are
an important source of carbohydrates, glucose for our brain and muscles. These carbohydrates provide
to energy the billions of gut and are crucial for a strong digestive tract. Dairy foods are an important
source of calcium, protein, Vitamin B12 and riboflavin. Most people actually do not get enough
calcium, which is important in osteoblastic activity with the addition of Vitamin D to build bones.
Dairy is also a replaceable with different assortment of options available like coconut, almond or
cashew milk. Avoiding dairy foods is a personal choice and may places limits on what can be cooked
at home and eaten when eating out. People share many healthy habits, strong community ties, exercise
moderately, and enjoy a relaxed, slower paced lifestyle. While it is most definitely an amalgamation of
factors that contributes positive outcomes, diet governs a good portion of our longevity. So besides
healthy lifestyle practices, it is most likely that the reason for longevity is the food we

Is Sustainable Competitive Advantage Possible, And How Can...
Is sustainable competitive advantage possible, and how can technology be used as its catalyst? This is
the question that has vexed managers and business leaders for decades. According to Michael Porter,
the answer lies in how technology is used. In this Case Study Report, Team 3 discusses how Mrs.
Fields, Inc. leveraged technology for strategic positioning. Mrs. Fields, Inc. did not create the sweet
snack industry, but it was the company s innovative use of technology that helped the company sustain
a competitive advantage over other companies vying for those same impulse snack dollars.
THE COOKIE MONSTER IS CREATED
A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF MRS. FIELDS, INC.
Mrs. Fields Cookies (MFC) is based in Broomfield, Colorado with a production and distribution
facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. Debbi Fields and Randy Fields opened their first store in Palo Alto,
California in 1977, and its first headquarters was in Palo Alto, California, moving soon thereafter to
Salt Lake City in 1982. Between 1985 and 1988, the company opened 225 new stores. By the late
1980s the chain had grown to include 425 cookie stores across the United States and abroad, with
annual retail sales of over $87 million. MFC grew in 1984 with the purchase of another retail cookie
chain, the Famous Chocolate Chip Company, and diversified in 1987 with the acquisition of 119 store
French bakery/sandwich chain, Le Petite Boulangerie.

Informative Speech On Conversion Therapy
Speech Title:
Topic: Conversion therapy
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: I want the audience to avoid organizations that support the use of conversion
therapy and to understand the pseudoscientific and harmful nature of such a practice.
Thesis: Conversion therapy receives little support from the American psychiatric community due to a
lack of evidence confirming its supposed effectivity and the measurable damage it causes to the
individuals subjected to its outdated practices.
Action Step: I want the audience to avoid organizations that promote the use of conversion therapy to
alter a person s sexual orientation.
I. Introduction
a. For those of you who are straight, I want you to know that your feelings are signs of repressed
childhood traumas. Now, I want you all to put aside your heterosexual tendencies and let your true
same sex attractions take hold.
b. That was a simplified example of exercises used in conversion therapy, also known as reparative
therapy. According to the Just the Facts Coalition, conversion (reparative) therapy is therapy
counseling and psychotherapy aimed at eliminating or suppressing homosexuality. (Just the Facts
Coalition, 2008)
i. People who claim to have successfully altered their sexual orientation often identify themselves as
ex gays. ii. Ex gays who retract their claims of success and reunite with the LGBTQ+ community are
popularly known as ex ex gays.
c. Thankfully, I have never been forced to receive conversion

NFPA 13 Database Analysis
We have a parking garage that is approximately 15 ft high with concrete deck and structural beams up
to 24 in. depth forming bays of approximately 14 ft by 10 ft. The parking a garage has a series of car
hoists to allow for double occupancy of vehicles being stacked one over another. We are trying to
position the sprinklers to avoid clearance issues. What is the occupancy classification for this
application?
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard as well as the
2016 edition. Our informal interpretation is that the occupancy classification is Extra Hazard (Group
2).
This was specifically addressed in the 2016 edition of the NFPA 13 standard. The 2013 edition does
not address car stackers. New ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The base requirement is Section 8.6.6.1 that indicates that the clearance between the deflector and the
top of storage shall be 18 in. or greater. There are times where that is impractical where additional
sprinklers have to be provided. This would require sprinklers to be placed on the four corners of the
vehicle. Annex material A.8.5.6.1 addresses this clearance issue that states, The 18 in. clearance does
not apply to vehicles in concrete parking structures. Since that is located in Section 8.5 General, this
applies to all sprinkler types. Parking garages with low height ceilings and piping runs with dry pipe
systems create clearance issues for the sprinklers even without car stackers. This usually involves
higher vehicles such as large SUVs and vans. Even if the vehicle locations are initially specified and
sprinklers are placed accordingly, the striped parking locations can be moved at a later date and
impacting the sprinkler clearances. This application has robust concrete construction and considered
fire resistive. Thus, damage to the structure is not likely with sprinkler protection. The beams in this
structure also create bays that will aid in activation of the sprinklers and contain the heat plume. The
sprinkler system should be able to cool upper layer gas temperatures, prevent flashover, and control
the fire. Sprinkler systems are designed to control the fire and allow time for the responding fire
service to finish the job. Since this application has cars stacked that are not specifically addressed by
the standard in effect, this is worth discussing with the AHJ. As indicated by Section 1.5 Equivalency,
alternative arrangements are acceptable provided that the level of safety is not reduced. There is no
better source for supporting equivalency than a newer edition of the same installation

Attila The Hun Ruler
You might wonder to yourself who Attila the Hun is when you hear his name. Attila was a ruler for the
Hun army in the year 434 AD. Besides being the ruler, he was just like any other person who was a
Hun. He was normal height for a Hun, which was short. Attila s eyes were small and he had a snub
nose. Attila the Hun was born in the year 400 and died in the year 453. He began to rule the Huns in
the year 434. He ruled with his brother, Bleda, until year 445. That was the year Attila killed Bleda.
So, Attila ruled from the year 445 to year 453, the year he died, by himself. Him and his brother came
to power and succeeded the previous ruler, Rua. Rua was also known as Attila and Bleda s uncle. The

Essay on Legacy of Luna
BOOK REVIEW Legacy of Luna Julia Butterfly Hill Harper San Francisco April 1, 2000 The author
Julia Butterfly Hill book is a personal reference of the adversity she overcame when faced with saving
a part of nature, a part of what defines her, a piece of something she would never let go of. In this
novel the author gives biographical evidence of not only her love of saving the redwood trees. The
story begins in December of 1996, in the town of Stafford, California. There was a mudslide which
was catastrophic and buried seven homes. The removal of the redwood trees was what she states to be
a cause and effect of this disaster because they absorb the moisture that causes erosion. She was up

I absolutely am very fond of this book. I chose to read this book because I was fascinated with
learning about trees in the previous project we were assigned. Not only did I grasp the fresh air of
nature, but I began to be with one with nature which was absent for quite a while. This book not only
brought back that feeling of becoming nature to me, but created a perspective that I may have been
closed minded about. If I could officially rate this book I would give it a five out of five, it brings a
natural, spiritual emotion to all readers. Preservation, and conservation of Mother Nature is not what
only keeps us alive as a society, but it s what keeps us to look back at where we have come from. I
love the way how this is also a true story; it brings that realistic sense into my eyes. I would love to
read more books like this. I would recommend this book to all those who are fond of nature. More
likely those who take passion in the environment and helping preserve and conserve; I think this
would be perfect for an environmental class. Since trees are a major part of our ecosystem it would
make sense for them to read this book, and creates a personal relationship with nature. This book
could be for all ages, but it s directly focused on teenagers and up, because they tend to take

Florida Vs Arizona Essay
Two seemingly similar places Arizona and Florida are two seemly similar places, but when you
compare the two they have very different pros and cons. Florida is a humid place, and Arizona is a dry
heat. Florida is normally sunny as well as Arizona but it gets much more rain then Arizona because it s
basically an island state. If you re looking for a bigger difference in seasons Arizona is great because
the winters are colder, and there is snow in the northern area of Arizona, while you won t ever get any
in Florida. If you re looking for a relatively warm place all year round Florida is great. Being that
Arizona is a desert state the humidity and rainfall is much lower. The average high in Arizona
summers is a strikingly high 104 degrees while Florida s average high is 92 degrees. The winter s high
median in Arizona is 48 degrees while Florida stands at 50 degrees. Usually in Arizona the wettest
month is March with around 1 and Florida s wettest month is usually June with around 7 . Arizona is
the smaller state of the two with a population of 6,553,255 while Florida is standing at 19,317,568, so
Arizona may be better if you like it to be a little less populated, and Florida is better if you like bog

So we go to the Resource tab and look at the ribbon for the Resources. We have a button here called
Assign Resources. If I open up the Assign Resources I get another window that s going to pop up. And
the reason Steve particularly likes this window is, it s a stay on top. I m on Resource 1. I ve already
assigned, sorry. I m on Task 1 I ve already assigned Resource 1 as per our select from the list box. I
can simply go to Task 2. and the stay on top box remains and I could say Task 2 is going to be
assigned to Resource 2 for example, and I click Assign. 00:05:20 So now we see Resource 2 has been
assigned. The Work, the Units is 50%. Why? Because this resource is only available to us by the
Resource sheet for 50% of the time. So let s have a look at what assigning a 50% Resource does to a
task. If I move my window just a little bit we see the 00:05:43 Task has a three day Duration.
Resource 2 is only available to work on the Task 50% of the time. So if we take 3 days x 8 hours
would be 24 hours. At a rate of $10 an hour, one would think the cost would be 240 but because
Resource 2 is only available to work on the task 50% of the time, we only work on the task for 12
hours, instead of 3x8 which is 24, and therefore the cost is only $120. And we can go on assigning
resources because this again is a stay on top. We go to Task 3 and we say we re going to assign
Resource 1 to that Task, and we re going to assign Resource 3 to a Task.

Persuasive Essay On The Declaration Of Independence
A treasure that we should continually use for our decisions on the new challenges we face. (Esposito)
Frank J. Esposito echos the purpose of The Declaration of Independence(DOI)in this new era and how
it should be implemented in a modern government. The DOI is the most influential piece of writing
that has ever come to be. It served it s purpose in 1777 by uniting the colonists against Great Britain in
a bold declaration of independence. This persuasive essay was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited
by important figures, which are now known as the founding fathers. Not only, is the DOI an important
part of history, but it has also become the model for many other persuasive writings. Thomas Jefferson
used techniques like siding with the acrimonious reader, considering the historical precedent and the
conceding of a point, to create a compelling argument to persuade the reader s of The Declaration of
Independence. Thomas Jefferson used persuasion with the acrimonious reader by siding and
understanding the opposing view of The Declaration of Independence. To comprehend why this
technique was so effective, there should be an understanding of what is meant by an acrimonious
reader. An acrimonious reader is one who will not agree with the author s writing. Jefferson reaches
the acrimonious reader by siding, with the purpose to, declare the causes which impel them to the
separation. Jefferson wants the disagreeing side to question their opposing beliefs, all this by
presenting evidence, which is unarguable and cannot be set aside. Essentially, it become a
demonstration that the author is considering the opposing view and understands that the opposite is a
valid argument. If I am charged with microscopic views, I shall treat the charge as captious, unless its
author is able to show, that a different lens would lead to different conclusions. (Droit and Richard)
Both Droit and Seldon, when criticising the DOI, understood that there must be an understanding of
the arguments of both sides in order for persuasion to take place. If a writer s argument is one sided,
then it becomes impossible to hook the acrimonious reader, who serves as the target for persuasion.
Persuasion only works if the reader keeps reading,

The Influence Of The Pick Mix Concept
When consumers buy products from a retail shop, they tend to opt to shop the products from a brand
that they have trust in and that is a familiar brand. This means consumers prefer to select a recognised
brand rather than choosing cheaper products or less familiar ones, even if the branded product has the
same quality as the generic products (Goworek McGoldrick, 2015). Thus, brand awareness is a very
important factor that can bring a brand power in connection with people s mind set. However, it might
prove hard to create a high brand awareness for the Pick Mix concept that in general have a low
recognition factor, since this is applied a little different from other retail products in the retail shop.
Also, the Pick Mix concept is that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently, Cloetta has its own brand name for the Pick Mix concept; Godisfavoriter for candies which
means candy favorites and Natursnack for nuts which means natural snack (Cloetta, 2015). It should
be examined how much of an effect these names have on consumers brand awareness. If consumers
look at these names in the retail shop for example, in Coop, it will hardly remind them that Cloetta is
connected with these names. Kapferer (2012) points out that [a] brand is not the name of a product. It
is the vision that drives the creation of products and services under that name. That vision, the key
belief of the brand and its core value is called identity (p149). In this point of view, there is a key issue
of how the brand names of Cloetta s Pick Mix concepts can provide the image to consumers so they
can perceive Cloetta s brand as having a unique value by selecting their brand. By comparison with

This was then measured and 85 mm was found to be the appropriate length. The core was cut for the
sliding screw without complication using a pre set reamor set at 85 mm. The tap was then used to tap
the way for the proximal screw and an 85 mm sliding screw was inserted across the fracture sight into
the head and neck without complication. A four hole 135 degree side plate was then attached. We slid
it over the depwheeze sliding screw and attached it to the proximal femur using a lommen turkey claw
clamp. With the fixation in place AP and lateral fluoroscopic images throughout the fracture sight and
hardware position confirmed good reduction and good placement of the hardware. At this point the
side plate was then secured to the proximal femur using the 3 2 drill bit to drill a hole measuring the
approximate length with the depth gauge and placing 4 5 cortical screws of the appropriate length
without complication. At this point the compression screw was inserted. All traction was left off and
the compression screw was tightened impacting the fracture nicely. All screws were then tightened
with the screwdriver. The lommen was removed, as was all hardware. Multiple views in the AP and

To Autumn – A Proclamation of Life and Hope Essay
To Autumn A Proclamation of Life and Hope
The poem To Autumn is an amazing piece of work written by one of the greatest poets of all time,
John Keats. From a simple reading, the poem paints a beautiful picture of the coming season.
However, one may wonder if there is more to the poem than what the words simply say. After it is
studied and topics such as sound, diction and imagery are analyzed, one can clearly say that Keats
used those techniques to illustrate the progression of death, and to show that there is still life at the end
of life. From the very beginning of To Autumn, sound appears to be an important aspect of Keats s
technique. When the words are studied, there is an even mixture of loud and soft ... Show more

This tells of the great bounty of the current time, but adds a quiet feeling to it, such as what Keats was
trying to communicate that death or a time of quiet is approaching.
The second stanza has mainly quiet sounds. With words such as oft, store, swath, seeks, careless, soft
lifted, and drowsed, the whole stanza is filled with soft s and w sounds. This makes the stanza very
sleepy and slow but with a warm comfortable feeling. What is most brilliant is that he writes about
sleep and then uses words that sound like sleep to describe it. That makes the reader really experience
how he is explaining death with sounds, not just words. This change from stanza one also goes along
with the progression of life. It started out loud and young, and now has begun to soften, such as life
does when one grows older or nears death.
The third stanza somewhat follows the course set down by the previous two stanzas, but it also does
something surprising. One may predict that the third stanza becomes softer still, following the
progression, yet it does not quite do so. It does start according to prediction, very quiet and feathery,
with words such as stubble plains, rosy, wailful, sallows, and lives or dies. This is generally very soft,
which continues the progression, but there is a hitch. Keats writes, And full grown lambs loud bleat
from hilly bourn. The whole line stands out very radically because it is almost

Hamlet Metaatheatre Essay
Metatheatre is best defined as a play within a play, having the ability to either show the unlikeliness of
life in art, or prove the overall theatricality of life in art. This concept expresses the fine line between
illusions and realities within a play. It presents absurd and improbable actions that allow the audience
to realize the overall frame of the work. Stoppard s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead makes use
of this literary technique as he takes two minor characters in Shakespeare s Hamlet and creates a
comedic play fusing together the plot of Hamlet with Stoppard s take on the experiences of
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Thus, he creates a the play of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
within the framework of Shakespeare s Hamlet. Stoppard is limited in what he can and cannot do with
his artistic choices and freedoms as a writer because he must ensure his plot and ideas fit within the
overall plot of Hamlet, clearly illustrating the idea of metatheatricality. Along with Stoppard s
inclusion of Hamlet, he further develops the characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, creating
more comedic and interesting characters who are constantly confused with their role in the play.

Conserving Water For The Future
Conserving Water for the Future Agriculture must mediate between nature and human community,
with ties and obligations in both directions. To farm well requires an elaborate courtesy toward all
creatures, animate and inanimate (Wendell Berry). Farming is a delicate balance between producing
the most possible from the land without destroying the land. In order for farming to be sustainable
more has to be grown with less. Water conservation can be addressed in developing countries by
simply embracing modern farming methods. In developed countries more money will have to be
invested into water saving irrigation methods. There was a time when you didn t shut the water off
when you brushed your teeth and now it is habit to shut the water off to save that little bit of water.
The same spirit will have to implemented in farming simple methods can be used to save water. In
order for farming to be sustainable in an ever changing world, more time and effort needs to be
dedicated to water conservation because the population is growing, water is a finite resource, and
using less water allows farmers to irrigate more land with the same amount of water.
Farmers across the world will have to embrace modern irrigation techniques. Africa is a prime
example of a continent heavily invested in water conservation. In a continent where 23.2% of its
inhabitants are starving they still have farms without irrigation (World Hunger). Well it would require
significant changes switching

Vietnam Speech On America s Political Interest In Vietnam
The Vietnam War was one of the most comprehensive and horrible wars after the Second World War.
Hundreds of thousands US soldiers were sent to help fight the communists in Vietnam. The US was
driven by Cold War concerns about the spread of communism, particularly by the domino theory the
idea that if one Asian nation fell to the leftist ideology, others would quickly follow. On 1st of June,
1956 John F. Kennedy, at that time a young senator, gave a speech on America s political interest in
Vietnam. In that speech John F. Kennedy tried to persuade the American people to accept and support
America s intervention in Vietnam.
John F. Kennedy was the president of the United States from 1961 to 1963. In his speech America s
stake in Vietnam he used several rhetorical features in order to persuade the American people. He used
two forms of appealing to persuade: pathos and logos. He used pathos when he spoke of Vietnam as
Americas child , which makes the audience feel responsible and caring. Furthermore, he used logos
when he explained what would happen if the US ignores Vietnams need. And if it falls victim to any

Kennedy s speech he said: Vietnam represent a test of American responsibility and determination in
Asia (s. 19, ll. 35 36). It is obviously that he means that America has a responsibility to make sure the

million of human lives. Moreover, the war left a heavy burden on The US economy. But blood and
money were not the only prices the US had to pay. The My Lai massacre questioned the U.S. claim of
moral superiority and its status of the world defender of freedom and right. In this manner the war
weakened American peoples faith and confidence in their government. In fact, there was a widespread
public distrust of the government, especially in military decisions right after the

The Pros And Cons Of Haiti
Since 1994, Haiti has experienced seven major military and humanitarian interventions undertaken by
the United States of America (USA) and the United Nations (UN). These interventions are thought to
have helped Haiti develop economically and politically, but has this been the case? Despite the many
interventions, or perhaps because of them, Haiti is still the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere
and one of the poorest countries in the world. The country is overwhelmed with corruption, high
unemployment, high crime levels, and miserable economic prospects for its citizens. Looking at the
advantages and disadvantages of the interventions gives us a clearer picture of why Haiti is in such a
dismal state today.
Interventions brought thousands of foreign troops to Haiti, but also brought several benefits. For
example:

But that is not all many of the products that the USA has donated to Haiti such as wheat, rice, bananas,

which plunged to a mere 15% by 2008 entire industries have been destroyed and the country is now
almost exclusively dependent on imports, primarily from the USA. Unemployment skyrocketed and it
damaged the Haitian economy and markets to the point where the government of Haiti even had to
call for an end to large scale food aid in 2010. But food aid continues to this day despite its harm. It is
critical to realise that the situation in Haiti does not look much better today than it did in 1994 despite
all the aid. Therefore, whether these donations and investments have brought any meaningful benefits
to Haitian citizens is highly

Authors have even noted trends toward increasing modularity (particularly in the United States) in
educational curricula, architecture, literature, and music (Blair, 1988). Modularity exponentially
increases the number of possible configurations achievable from a given set of inputs, greatly
increasing the flexibility of a system. However, research also indicates that not all systems migrate
toward increasing modularity; some appear to follow a path toward increasing integration. In product
systems, for example, sets of components that once were easily mixed and matched may sometimes be
bundled into a single integrated package that does not allow (or that discourages) substitution of other
components. Many commonly used software applications are now bundled into software suites that
promote seam 2000 Schilling 313 less integration. Although they do not prohibit using other vendor

combination of the particular set of applications. Even bicycle componentryonce typically sold as

researchers have noted that whereas in many industries firms other industries appear to be

Socioeconomic Effects of Coffee Trade on the Ethiopian Farmer
Socioeconomic effects on farmers in a volatile Ethiopian coffee market and the promise of the Fair
Trade movement
Coffee and Ethiopia have shared a lengthy and highly tumultuous relationship. According to some,
their history dates back to the fifteenth century, but it is widely acknowledged that extensive trade
didn t begin until the late eighteenth century (Aregay 1988, 19). As world coffee consumption
skyrocketed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Ethiopia s economy grew increasingly
dependent on the industry. By the mid 1970 s, it s estimated that coffee accounted for a staggering
55% of all Ethiopian exports. This figure has since declined, and today it s estimated to be somewhere
around 35% (Daviron, Ponte 2005, 61 62). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This year he expects aound $60 for the coffee (Gresser, Tickell 2002, 42). Yet again, we are faced with
the unavoidable question: if the farmer is not making any money, the millers aren t making any money
and the exporters are not making any money, who is? To answer this, we must look to the roasters and
retailers: a group of five corporate giants who purchase over fifty percent of the market s green coffee
beans (Gresser, Tickell 2002, 27 28). Certain analysts have estimated that Nestle earns up to 26%
profit on all instant coffee sales (Luttinger, Dicum 2011, 131). The great disparity is made possible by
the massive amounts of power these companies possess. Though public perception of the companies
has begun a move toward skepticism, it is still largely positive. Corporations work to enormous
lengths to ensure brand loyalty. For example, instant coffee companies in the UK spent over $68
million on advertising in 1999. Because they re aware that the public might not agree with their
business practices, they work relentlessly to ensure that we don t learn too much. Nestle is known for
releasing intentionally complex business records that often pool all of their beverage profits, which
includes many non coffee products, into one (Luttinger, Dicum 2011, 118). The end result is a farmer
who can t provide for his family after working day and night to produce a substantial crop. Not only

Book Report On Isaac s Storm

Professor Lambert
Isaac s Storm Book Review
Isaac s Storm, is a tale of self confidence. This Hurricane in 1900 in Galveston was the worst and
deadliest hurricane this country has ever seen. About 6,000 people lost their lives and among those
who died was Isaac Cline s wife. I can tell how guilty he must have felt and how horrific this time was
for Cline, especially because he thought a massive storm could never devastate his amazing city. The
horrific events of what happened in Galveston is only partially told in this book. Erik Larson s use of
Cline s own letters and reports show Cline s own self confidence or pride and falsifies facts that Cline
was the hero he believed himself to be after the Storm surfaced. Isaac s Storm clearly shows what can
happen when human arrogance takes priority over anything else. ... Show more content on

people who worked with him, convinced themselves that the storms out of the Caribbean would move

not get the storm surges. To ignore the signs of the storm s size and intensity was the ultimate sign of
arrogance. The National Weather Service didn t want to create fear, but they should have been scared
or a little more concerned, since other parts of the United States experienced major disasters before.

Themes In The Incomplete Quad By David Sedaris
Quince Harding
A lot of non disabled people go through life carelessly, thinking, What does it matter if I just sit back
and do nothing? Or think that they can do anything they want and everything will still be fine, just
taking life for granted. There are people out in the world like Peg a girl from the narrative The
Incomplete Quad , who can t even go through everyday life by themselves. The narrative The
Incomplete Quad goes into the lives of people like Peg and Dale and shows us how much they
actually go through or rather how much they can t. The story s main focus is on the lives of Peg and a
guy named David, C average slacker who thinks he can get through life Doing nothing. He goes to
college at Kent state and is roomed with a guy named Dale but when Dale moves back home David s
roomed with Peg. The story follows their lives and the journey of David coming to realize that he
needs to change his ways because there are people out in the world like Dale and Peg who would kill
to be in his position and be able to live life with half the freedoms he has. In The Incomplete Quad ,
David Sedaris shows that non disabled people take life for granted by using characterization,
humorous diction and the climax and resolution of the story
David Sedaris uses characterization a lot in the story, especially about Dale and Peg. Characterization
shows the theme in this story very well because it brings us deeper into the lives of disabled people

Ben Shahn s The Passion Of Sacco And Vanzetti
Ben Shahn s painting The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti highlights the discrimination immigrant
groups, as outsiders, face in many aspects of the American experience, particularly that before the
justice system. Shahn effectively argues that the American systems, as a result of prejudice and
hostility towards immigrants, can be incredibly unjust and abusive. He does so through his specific
use of colors, the symbolism of the figures he chose to use, and the framing of his painting. The
Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti is made with tempera and gouache on canvas mounted on composition
board. It was painted by social realist Ben Shahn in the years of 1931 and 1932 as a criticism of the
infamous American Sacco and Vanzetti case ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Apparently, it took the judge, who stands at the window of the courthouse, hypocritically holding up
his right hand in a sign of honesty, three hours to deem guilty the accused. Honorable they may have
been, but when facing what they view as a crisis, those in power will generally do what they deem
necessary to protect an established order in which they occupy positions of privilege (33). It can be
seen in the faces of the men that though they are in honorable positions of power, their ideas about
justice and fairness were quickly distorted. Shahn painted the men with bored looking and cold faces.
Even the smaller details of the painting hold great importance. Frame of the painting and the scale of
the figures implies something: the person viewing the scene depicted in the painting is doing so
intimately, from a close range, as if invited to the funeral: the viewer is a bystander like the three men
who convicted Sacco and Vanzetti. For example, even now the response of many majority Americans
has been to support measures that place large portions of the immigrant populations under suspicion
and state surveillance (35). Shahn is trying to say that everyone, America as a whole and Americans,
watched on as Sacco and Vanzetti were killed and did nothing. Like no one helped

Nefertiti Bust Analysis
The cultural artifact that I propose to study is a bust of Queen Nefertiti, who was the Royal Wife of the
Pharaoh Akhenaten. The bust is said to be painted with stucco coated limestone, created in 1345 B.C
by Thutmose who was a talented sculptor. The bust was discovered in 1912 in Thutmose s workshop
by Ludwig Borchardt and his archaeological team. The bust had many owners in Germany throughout
the years, however, it is currently on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin. The Nefertiti bust is a
cultural phenomenon, especially for ancient Egypt as well as Berlin. Germany had the bust for over a
century now and it has been their pride and joy. The argument between Egypt and Germany over the
bust has been going on for decades. Egypt believes that the bust belongs to them and that it was taken

In addition, the artifact was created by limestone which was then protected with modelled gypsum.
The bust was created with only eye that was ornamented with crystal and the pupil has black wax. The
second eye was never finished with the crystal and wax. The paint that was used in the bust as well
shows us clues on its age, which seems to reinforce the idea that it is authentic. However, others say
that it is not an authentic example of Egyptian sculptures because of the constant debate concerning
the bust having only one eye, decorated and how the ancient Egyptians would have considered this to
be the ultimate form of disrespect towards their queen. Another theory that circulated regarding the
bust being a fake was Henri Stielin a Swiss art historian proposed that Nefertiti s shoulders were
designed vertically and that normally the ancient Egyptians cut shoulders horizontally for their busts
which means that it does not seem to follow the usual expectations or ideas that some people might
have of Egyptian

Effects Of Animal Poaching
What if animal poaching came to an end? The world would be a better place and the ecosystem and
animal species would not be in danger. Animal poaching holds the number one spot for wild animal
deaths, resulting in more than 50 percent of all deaths. Some people argue that animal poaching is a
life style and should not be stopped. Majority of the population argues that it is wrong and steps need
to be taking to end it. Big game animals such as tigers, elephants, and rhinos are facing serious danger.
They are being pushed to extinction in many countries. Animal poaching is bad for the environment
and food chains, its gruesome, operates on the black market and is making animals go extinct. Animal
poaching has nothing good about it. It ruins many of things and changes people s way of life. It makes
it harder for animal populations to stay healthy and not extinct. Animal poaching needs to be put to an
end. Poaching is defined as the illegal practice of trespassing on another s property to hunt or steal
game without the landowner s permission (Dicitonary.com). Many animals including elephants, tigers,
rhinos, and snub nosed monkeys are on the verge of extinction due to humans poaching them for felt,
ivory, etc. According to, Legal, Moral and Biological Implications of Poaching and Illegal Animal

  • 2. The Old British Empire s Influence On Modern Museums Essay The sun never sets on the British Empire is a phrase that is known all too well in regards to British Imperialism and colonization spanning over Africa, Asia, North America, Australia, and Europe. Over the years, England in particular, has had a major influence across the world as a global superpower by sharing its own technology, culture, religion and more. But as much as they have shared, they have also taken to enrich their own society with artifacts, designs, foods, and other aspects of the foreign culture. This dynamic between Great Britain and each colonized country has immensely shaped modern British museums by expanding the content in museums as it relates to imperialism, diversifying the artifacts collected from other countries, and the influences it has had on British society shown through museums collections. The old British Empire s influence on modern museums also raised many issues for contemporary curators and audiences concerning museums glorifying imperialism, the ethically of keeping these collected artifacts, and if the museums have a subtle underlying imperialistic bias. To understand why imperialism is such a prominent theme in British museums it is important to understand the history of British Imperialism in the first place. In the 15th and 16th centuries Portugal and Spain were leading imperialist powers, sailing the seas and discovering new land and becoming wealthier from the treasures these places held. • 3. Reel Injun Stereotypes Reel Injun and Misrepresentation and Native Stereotyping on Screen Misrepresentation of Natives on screen throughout the 20th century has had an adverse effect on them. Whether it was positive or negative stereotypes, Natives felt the effect of Hollywood and began to lose their self identity, their honour, and their pride. Reel Injun takes a look at how movies have defined an entire race and also documents the rebirth of the Native identity after decades of destructive Hollywood movies by interviewing notable Native actors, actresses, and activists. By doing so, director Neil Diamond hopes to silence Hollywood stereotypes and get Hollywood to properly represent the Native people. Hollywood s early depictions of Natives consisted of tribesmen and noble savages who are in tune with Nature. Films such as The Silent Enemy portray these stereotypes on screen with actors like Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance being shown as tribesmen who are very noble Natives. Although these stereotypes are positive, they are still stereotypes nonetheless. These stereotypes have caused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stagecoach also shows Natives being hunted like animals, which sends the image of them being non human and thus they should be treated as such. The parking a garage has a series of car hoists to allow for double occupancy of vehicles being stacked one over another. We are trying to position the sprinklers to avoid clearance issues. What is the occupancy classification for this application? We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard as well as the 2016 edition. Our informal interpretation is that the occupancy classification is Extra Hazard (Group 2). This was specifically addressed in the 2016 edition of the NFPA 13 standard. The 2013 edition does not address car stackers. New ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The base requirement is Section 8.6.6.1 that indicates that the clearance between the deflector and the top of storage shall be 18 in. or greater. There are times where that is impractical where additional sprinklers have to be provided. This would require sprinklers to be placed on the four corners of the vehicle. Annex material A.8.5.6.1 addresses this clearance issue that states, The 18 in. clearance does not apply to vehicles in concrete parking structures. Since that is located in Section 8.5 General, this applies to all sprinkler types. Parking garages with low height ceilings and piping runs with dry pipe systems create clearance issues for the sprinklers even without car stackers. This usually involves higher vehicles such as large SUVs and vans. Even if the vehicle locations are initially specified and sprinklers are placed accordingly, the striped parking locations can be moved at a later date and impacting the sprinkler clearances. This application has robust concrete construction and considered fire resistive. Thus, damage to the structure is not likely with sprinkler protection. The beams in this structure also create bays that will aid in activation of the sprinklers and contain the heat plume. The sprinkler system should be able to cool upper layer gas temperatures, prevent flashover, and control the fire. Sprinkler systems are designed to control the fire and allow time for the responding fire service to finish the job. Since this application has cars stacked that are not specifically addressed by the standard in effect, this is worth discussing with the AHJ. As indicated by Section 1.5 Equivalency, alternative arrangements are acceptable provided that the level of safety is not reduced. In this novel the author gives biographical evidence of not only her love of saving the redwood trees. The story begins in December of 1996, in the town of Stafford, California. There was a mudslide which was catastrophic and buried seven homes. The removal of the redwood trees was what she states to be a cause and effect of this disaster because they absorb the moisture that causes erosion. She was up against the Maxxam ... This book not only brought back that feeling of becoming nature to me, but created a perspective that I may have been closed minded about. If I could officially rate this book I would give it a five out of five, it brings a natural, spiritual emotion to all readers. Preservation, and conservation of Mother Nature is not what only keeps us alive as a society, but it s what keeps us to look back at where we have come from. I love the way how this is also a true story; it brings that realistic sense into my eyes. I would love to read more books like this. I would recommend this book to all those who are fond of nature. More likely those who take passion in the environment and helping preserve and conserve; I think this would be perfect for an environmental class. Since trees are a major part of our ecosystem it would make sense for them to read this book, and creates a personal relationship with nature. • 14. Florida Vs Arizona Essay Two seemingly similar places Arizona and Florida are two seemly similar places, but when you compare the two they have very different pros and cons. Florida is a humid place, and Arizona is a dry heat. Florida is normally sunny as well as Arizona but it gets much more rain then Arizona because it s basically an island state. If you re looking for a bigger difference in seasons Arizona is great because the winters are colder, and there is snow in the northern area of Arizona, while you won t ever get any in Florida. If you re looking for a relatively warm place all year round Florida is great. Being that Arizona is a desert state the humidity and rainfall is much lower. The average high in Arizona summers is a strikingly high 104 degrees while Florida s average high is 92 degrees. The winter s high median in Arizona is 48 degrees while Florida stands at 50 degrees. Usually in Arizona the wettest month is March with around 1 and Florida s wettest month is usually June with around 7 . Arizona is the smaller state of the two with a population of 6,553,255 while Florida is standing at 19,317,568, so Arizona may be better if you like it to be a little less populated, and Florida is better if you like bog crowds and can deal with heavy traffic than Arizona. Esposito echos the purpose of The Declaration of Independence(DOI)in this new era and how it should be implemented in a modern government. The DOI is the most influential piece of writing that has ever come to be. It served it s purpose in 1777 by uniting the colonists against Great Britain in a bold declaration of independence. This persuasive essay was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by important figures, which are now known as the founding fathers. Not only, is the DOI an important part of history, but it has also become the model for many other persuasive writings. Thomas Jefferson used techniques like siding with the acrimonious reader, considering the historical precedent and the conceding of a point, to create a compelling argument to persuade the reader s of The Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson used persuasion with the acrimonious reader by siding and understanding the opposing view of The Declaration of Independence. To comprehend why this technique was so effective, there should be an understanding of what is meant by an acrimonious reader. An acrimonious reader is one who will not agree with the author s writing. Jefferson reaches the acrimonious reader by siding, with the purpose to, declare the causes which impel them to the separation. Jefferson wants the disagreeing side to question their opposing beliefs, all this by presenting evidence, which is unarguable and cannot be set aside. Essentially, it become a demonstration that the author is considering the opposing view and understands that the opposite is a valid argument. If I am charged with microscopic views, I shall treat the charge as captious, unless its author is able to show, that a different lens would lead to different conclusions. (Droit and Richard) Both Droit and Seldon, when criticising the DOI, understood that there must be an understanding of the arguments of both sides in order for persuasion to take place. If a writer s argument is one sided, then it becomes impossible to hook the acrimonious reader, who serves as the target for persuasion. Persuasion only works if the reader keeps reading, ... • 20. The Influence Of The Pick Mix Concept When consumers buy products from a retail shop, they tend to opt to shop the products from a brand that they have trust in and that is a familiar brand. This means consumers prefer to select a recognised brand rather than choosing cheaper products or less familiar ones, even if the branded product has the same quality as the generic products (Goworek McGoldrick, 2015). Thus, brand awareness is a very important factor that can bring a brand power in connection with people s mind set. If consumers look at these names in the retail shop for example, in Coop, it will hardly remind them that Cloetta is connected with these names. Kapferer (2012) points out that [a] brand is not the name of a product. It is the vision that drives the creation of products and services under that name. That vision, the key belief of the brand and its core value is called identity (p149). In this point of view, there is a key issue of how the brand names of Cloetta s Pick Mix concepts can provide the image to consumers so they can perceive Cloetta s brand as having a unique value by selecting their brand. To Autumn – A Proclamation of Life and Hope Essay To Autumn A Proclamation of Life and Hope The poem To Autumn is an amazing piece of work written by one of the greatest poets of all time, John Keats. From a simple reading, the poem paints a beautiful picture of the coming season. However, one may wonder if there is more to the poem than what the words simply say. After it is studied and topics such as sound, diction and imagery are analyzed, one can clearly say that Keats used those techniques to illustrate the progression of death, and to show that there is still life at the end of life. From the very beginning of To Autumn, sound appears to be an important aspect of Keats s technique. When the words are studied, there is an even mixture of loud and soft ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This tells of the great bounty of the current time, but adds a quiet feeling to it, such as what Keats was trying to communicate that death or a time of quiet is approaching. The second stanza has mainly quiet sounds. With words such as oft, store, swath, seeks, careless, soft lifted, and drowsed, the whole stanza is filled with soft s and w sounds. This makes the stanza very sleepy and slow but with a warm comfortable feeling. What is most brilliant is that he writes about sleep and then uses words that sound like sleep to describe it. That makes the reader really experience how he is explaining death with sounds, not just words. This change from stanza one also goes along with the progression of life. It started out loud and young, and now has begun to soften, such as life does when one grows older or nears death. The third stanza somewhat follows the course set down by the previous two stanzas, but it also does something surprising. One may predict that the third stanza becomes softer still, following the progression, yet it does not quite do so. It does start according to prediction, very quiet and feathery, with words such as stubble plains, rosy, wailful, sallows, and lives or dies. This is generally very soft, which continues the progression, but there is a hitch. Keats writes, And full grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn. Hamlet Metaatheatre Essay Metatheatre is best defined as a play within a play, having the ability to either show the unlikeliness of life in art, or prove the overall theatricality of life in art. This concept expresses the fine line between illusions and realities within a play. It presents absurd and improbable actions that allow the audience to realize the overall frame of the work. Stoppard s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead makes use of this literary technique as he takes two minor characters in Shakespeare s Hamlet and creates a comedic play fusing together the plot of Hamlet with Stoppard s take on the experiences of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Thus, he creates a the play of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead within the framework of Shakespeare s Hamlet. To farm well requires an elaborate courtesy toward all creatures, animate and inanimate (Wendell Berry). Farming is a delicate balance between producing the most possible from the land without destroying the land. In order for farming to be sustainable more has to be grown with less. Water conservation can be addressed in developing countries by simply embracing modern farming methods. In developed countries more money will have to be invested into water saving irrigation methods. There was a time when you didn t shut the water off when you brushed your teeth and now it is habit to shut the water off to save that little bit of water. The same spirit will have to implemented in farming simple methods can be used to save water. In order for farming to be sustainable in an ever changing world, more time and effort needs to be dedicated to water conservation because the population is growing, water is a finite resource, and using less water allows farmers to irrigate more land with the same amount of water. Socioeconomic Effects of Coffee Trade on the Ethiopian Farmer Socioeconomic effects on farmers in a volatile Ethiopian coffee market and the promise of the Fair Trade movement Coffee and Ethiopia have shared a lengthy and highly tumultuous relationship. According to some, their history dates back to the fifteenth century, but it is widely acknowledged that extensive trade didn t begin until the late eighteenth century (Aregay 1988, 19). As world coffee consumption skyrocketed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Ethiopia s economy grew increasingly dependent on the industry. By the mid 1970 s, it s estimated that coffee accounted for a staggering 55% of all Ethiopian exports. To answer this, we must look to the roasters and retailers: a group of five corporate giants who purchase over fifty percent of the market s green coffee beans (Gresser, Tickell 2002, 27 28). Certain analysts have estimated that Nestle earns up to 26% profit on all instant coffee sales (Luttinger, Dicum 2011, 131). The great disparity is made possible by the massive amounts of power these companies possess. Frame of the painting and the scale of the figures implies something: the person viewing the scene depicted in the painting is doing so intimately, from a close range, as if invited to the funeral: the viewer is a bystander like the three men who convicted Sacco and Vanzetti. For example, even now the response of many majority Americans has been to support measures that place large portions of the immigrant populations under suspicion and state surveillance (35). • 33. Nefertiti Bust Analysis The cultural artifact that I propose to study is a bust of Queen Nefertiti, who was the Royal Wife of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. The bust is said to be painted with stucco coated limestone, created in 1345 B.C by Thutmose who was a talented sculptor. The bust was discovered in 1912 in Thutmose s workshop by Ludwig Borchardt and his archaeological team. The bust had many owners in Germany throughout the years, however, it is currently on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin. The Nefertiti bust is a cultural phenomenon, especially for ancient Egypt as well as Berlin. Germany had the bust for over a century now and it has been their pride and joy. The argument between Egypt and Germany over the bust has been going on for decades. Egypt believes that the bust belongs to them and that it was taken ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, the artifact was created by limestone which was then protected with modelled gypsum. The bust was created with only eye that was ornamented with crystal and the pupil has black wax. The second eye was never finished with the crystal and wax. The paint that was used in the bust as well shows us clues on its age, which seems to reinforce the idea that it is authentic. However, others say that it is not an authentic example of Egyptian sculptures because of the constant debate concerning the bust having only one eye, decorated and how the ancient Egyptians would have considered this to be the ultimate form of disrespect towards their queen. Another theory that circulated regarding the bust being a fake was Henri Stielin a Swiss art historian proposed that Nefertiti s shoulders were designed vertically and that normally the ancient Egyptians cut shoulders horizontally for their busts which means that it does not seem to follow the usual expectations or ideas that some people might have of Egyptian ... Animal poaching holds the number one spot for wild animal deaths, resulting in more than 50 percent of all deaths. Some people argue that animal poaching is a life style and should not be stopped. Majority of the population argues that it is wrong and steps need to be taking to end it. Big game animals such as tigers, elephants, and rhinos are facing serious danger. They are being pushed to extinction in many countries. Animal poaching is bad for the environment and food chains, its gruesome, operates on the black market and is making animals go extinct. Animal poaching has nothing good about it. It ruins many of things and changes people s way of life. It makes it harder for animal populations to stay healthy and not extinct. Animal poaching needs to be put to an end. Poaching is defined as the illegal practice of trespassing on another s property to hunt or steal game without the landowner s permission (Dicitonary.com). Many animals including elephants, tigers, rhinos, and snub nosed monkeys are on the verge of extinction due to humans poaching them for felt, ivory, etc. According to, Legal, Moral and Biological Implications of Poaching and Illegal Animal Tracking on an International Scale, the loss of animals will endanger the ecosystem and therefore hurt the entire world. We need flora and fauna in our ecosystems to maintain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
