Tribal relations to the United States are similar to that of a ward and his guardian. This sentiment
was proclaimed in 1831 in Cherokee Nation V. Georgia. The United States has been attempting to
integrate Native populations into the American systems since the first settlements arrived from
across the sea. Original tribal status was that of dependent domestic nations 1. Recent history has
changed the status of Native America to one of self determination and sovereignty. This status was
not determined by the US Constitution as Native Tribes were sovereign people before
Colonialization. The Unites States solidified the direct relationship between the Native Nations and
the Federal Government with the Indian Commerce Clause of 1879. The Commerce Clause
allowed Congress alone the power to regulate commerce between the United States and the Indian

4th, 2014. It started off normal. A regular trail through the woods. The path started to get thinner
and thinner as we walked on it. We then got to a part where we had to go over a log that was
partly hanging over a chasm. I peered over the edge to see thousands of sharp rocks and a large
pool of rushing water. After 3 girls had gone over the log safely, it was my turn. I slowly put my
right leg over the enormous log. I had made sure to steady myself before putting my left leg over.

It is almost impossible to have a successful relationship when beginning with hardship. She [has]
refused him as himself. And this [has] been her life, and his life. With the short amount of time
humans have to live, there is no time to live in pity and regret. Elizabeth has the idea that her
husband is staying out at bars while she is home taking care of the kids miserable and worried.
This is not how a healthy marriage works. Elizabeth realizes she never even loved her husband
and was only attracted to the lust when D.H. Lawrence says, There had been nothing between
them, and yet they had come together, exchanging their nakedness repeatedly. She comes to the
realization that the only reason she has stuck around is for her family and social acceptance.
Elizabeth has guilt towards her assumption when she is proven wrong. After coming the
conclusion that her husband is out drinking again and she does not love him, men come to her
door with the information that her husband has passed away during work on the coalmines. She
begins to worry about if he suffered, how injured he was, and about the children. Some people
may assume that she feels relief that her husband has passed away because of her lack of love for
him but this is not true. Elizabeth has no emotion and is silenced because she feels sad for her
