Stereotypes And Media Analysis
Your television and computer are controlling every choice you make. Scary thought? Everyday
Americans log into their computer or turn on their TV and are fed information from our trusted
media. In fact, a Marshall survey states, By 2015, it is estimated that Americans will consume
both traditional and digital media for over 1.7 trillion hours, an average of approximately 5 and
a half hours per person per day. Unknowingly at times, we are allowing our media to shape the
choices we make, the ways we see others, and the way we view ourselves. With most of
Americans unaware of the media s control on their choices and views, this can be an alarming
realization. Media has a major impact on multiple parts of our society.

As seen in Effects of Disney s Gender Stereotyping it said Disney has created many movies that
make people sacrifice for others. Ariel gave up her voice and many other things just so she
could be with Prince Eric. This shows that even companies that are so innocent like Disney are
creating these wrong stereotypes. In another video called Always #likeagirl it stated when people
say like a girl it s almost always a bad thing. Like you run or throw like a girl it s normally a bad
thing. So many people want to make it a good thing. This illustrates that people want to reverse
things. 2nd, 3rd, even 1st graders take part in these wrong stereotypes. According to a graph in
Middle Eastern and Muslim Stereotypes in Media it said According to Southern illinois
university out of 1000 films from 1896 to 2007 that contains Middle Eastern references 12 were
good and over 900 hundred were bad. This demonstrates that to many people are being way to
stereotypical. Out of 1000 films there was only 12 good references and over 900 bad references!
There are such things as good Middle Easterns. Media plays a role in the shaping of our society s
stereotypes and one s views of others, but also contributes to people s body

A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway defined a hero as, A man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor,
courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful.
It is blatantly apparent that Henry, the protagonist of A Farewell to Arms, did not exemplify any
of these traits at all in the beginning of the novel. However, as the book progressed, Henry
gradually learned how to be a Hemingway Hero , and he eventually progressed to the point
where he completely embodied all that is expected of such. It is crucial to realize, however, that
Henry did not become a textbook example of a Hemingway Hero overnight. It would have been
absolutely impossible for Henry to become the man he was at the end of the novel... Show more

What Henry experienced during this particular time significantly impacted him and helped him
break away from the blueprint of the average soldier . Becoming a member of the army was of
great benefit to Henry because it was the one thing that really pushed him over the edge and
shattered the world as he knew it. The whole experience of the retreat was a crucial part of the
book because it gave Henry the insight he needed to grow into a Hemingway Hero. Events like
Aymo s death and Bonello s cowardice definitely influenced Henry, but bigger events like the
killing of the sergeant was what really changed Henry the most. Henry s encounter with the
battle police was truly sobering as well. He found what they were doing to the officers
disgusting and dishonorable, but after all that is what happens amid the chaos of a retreat. I saw
how their minds worked; if they had minds and if they worked. They were all young men and
they were saving their country (Hemingway 224). When Henry saw the darker side of the army,
and just how wrong everything that was happening really was, he truly changed inside. After he
finally did escape, he completely abandons the army forever, Anger was washed away in the river
along with any obligation (Hemingway 232). It was at this moment Henry truly embodied a
Hemingway Hero. Equally important in Henry s development into a Hemingway Hero was his
love for Catherine. Before Henry met Catherine he was extremely selfish. This was

Motivation Theory X And Theory

Motivation Theory X
Foundation of today s organizations. These theories go back to the turn of the century and in
some cases are considered by the uninformed to be simply fads which come and go. As I have
discovered, these theories are rather the steps on a ladder which continually takes us higher and
higher. Douglas McGregor in his book, The Human Side of Enterprise published in 1960 has
examined theories on behavior of individuals at work, and he has formulated two models which he
calls Theory X and Theory Y. Theory X Assumptions The average human being has an inherent
dislike of work and will avoid it if he can. Because of their dislike for work, most people must be

Collaborative self directed work teams can get complex projects done at faster rates than the
traditional boss worker arrangement, because the decision making process is made faster and more
effective in a team. Empowering teams to make decisions about their work also enhances
satisfaction and reduces turnover (Berger, 1998). Self directed work teams involve employees
in a specific area, or those who are working on a specific product or process. Self directed work
teams can be any size, we usually use 5 team members but normally run no more than 12 to 15
employees. The work team makes the decisions that would normally be made by a supervisor or
manager, and might interact with the company s suppliers and customers, whether they are inside
or outside the company.
In some companies, self directed work teams will also take over many of the human resource
functions as well (Cotton, 1993). Self directed work teams have also become one of the more
changing approaches to employee involvement, and has been increasing in popularity within the
last several years. Companies such as Proctor Gamble, Digital Equipment, General Mills, Federal
Express and other well known companies, are reorganizing their employees into self directed work
teams. In a recent survey, 476 Fortune 500 companies found that although only 7% of the work

Meaning Of Music Meaning
In Music, Language, and Composition Adorno, Theodor W. argues that To interpret language
means to understand language; to interpret music means to make music. Musical interpretation is
the act of execution... (115). However, in The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B Du Bois seems to point
out that music carries intention, history, and experiences. Musiccould be a way to share one s
feelings and experiences that could not be expressed with the same emotional impact if they were
just told through speaking. In other words, Du Bois seems to argue that music does have meaning
and to understand music is to be able to express the intention behind or in the music. It is
important to note that Adorno s focus of music in Music, Language, and Composition is primarily
classical music and Du Bois focus appears to be on music with lyrics. Therefore, music for Adorno
had no explicit signifying words. However, rhythm and tone exist in both cases.
In Music, Language, and Composition Adorno acknowledges that music is like signifying
language in many ways, from its structure to how it is formed. However, music is different from
signifying language because it does not have to be created with a solid intention or meaning. In
signifying language, the structure and combination of phrases to speech is, to some extent,
strategic. The formation of signifying language is strategic because the goal of the formation of the
phrase is to express something solid and with certainty as to what it s meaning is. The words that
are selected and the sentences that are formed from those words, were chosen and created because
meaning needs to be told to others in an accurate manner, so that they ll be able to understand that
same meaning. As for music, Adorno seems to claim that, contrary to signifying language, the
intent of which is to communicate a solid meaning, music does not need to have any firm goals
related to meaning or solid intentions. Instead, the musician will make the music vague because in
making the music ambiguous, the music will have the potential to link to multiple meanings that
will vary based on the listener. In other words, the listener will be the one to decide the meaning.
To add to this, when Adorno says, tthe whole is

Pollution of the Marine Environment
As per Article 1(4) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea , 1982 (UNCLOS),
pollution of marine environment means the introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of
substances or energy into the marine environment, including estuaries, which results or is likely to
result in such a deleterious effect as to harm living resources and marine life, hazardous to human
health, hindrance to marine activities, including fishing and other legitimate uses of the sea,
impairment of quality for use of seawater and reduction of amenities.
Marine pollution is a serious ocean water resource challenge that can affect human and animal food
resources. Unfortunately human activities are the largest contributor and cause of problems
resulting from the oceans being polluted. Furthermore, as the human population continues to grow
and extend the range of its activities, as well as increase its demands for marine goods and
services, the world s oceans and coasts will be increasingly stressed. In fact, growing coastal
populations and overuse of marine resources are the main source of the problem. The pollution
linked with rising coastal populations, availability of inadequate treatment infrastructure of sewage
and other waste handling facilities is putting at risk human health and

The availability of seafood in Canadian and Argentinean waters is also dependent on the total
allowable catch allocated to Clearwater in a given area. Although the totals allowable catch in
these areas and Clearwater s enterprise allocations have been largely stable, fishery regulators
have the right to make changes in the total allowable catch based on their assessment of the
resource from time to time. Any reduction of total allowable catches in the areas from which
Clearwater sources seafood, or the reduction of stocks due to changes in the environment or the
health of certain species, may have a material adverse effect on Clearwater s financial condition
and results of operations. Resource risk is managed through adherence to the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans ( DFO ) policies and guidelines. The guidelines, developed by DFO, are very
often a cooperative effort between industry participants and DFO. Clearwater mitigates the risk
associated with resource supply and competition through the diversification across species.
Clearwater s operating costs may be negatively affected by increases in inputs, such as energy
costs, raw material and commodity prices. Clearwater uses fuel, electricity, air and ocean freight
and other materials in the production, packaging and distribution of its products. Fuel and freight are

Similarities Between Navajo And Hopi
The perception of evil for the Navajo and Hopi widely differs from what our culture believes. To
us, you can either be good or evil but not both. We see a split and think that a person is just bad,
whereas the Navajo and Hopi cultures have views that are less severe to the individual in question.
The Navajo believe that what distinguishes good from evilis control, because acts can be both good
and evil. When something has little ability to be controlled by man, the situation has a higher
likelihood of being evil. Additionally, the Navajo don t see evil as being a kind of negative moral
corruption or an ethical problem. Instead, they see evil as being a realistic event, like death, illness,
droughts, or famines, because these events can t be controlled. When there is not control that is
when evil prevails. In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike our culture, which see s evil as a punishment or retaliation, the Hopi see s evil as
occurring if someone has ill thoughts toward themselves or others. Another way for there to be
a break in the universe is if an individual dislikes some aspect of the universe. To the Hopi, the
actions are what is bad not the person, and the universe just needs to find equilibrium again
when something bad happens. Breaking the universe can occur when someone take more food
than they need or if they are not being generous enough with what he does have. When the
universe needs to be restored because evil has occurred, the Hopi individual must first examine
himself to decide if he is in a happy state of mind. If he is, the blame for the evil can be pushed to
other. In this case, there is constant surveillance of neighbors and close relatives do determine who
is having ill thoughts, which is practice derived from the Pueblo, however the Hopi are not as
anxious about these practices. Additionally, the Hopi are strong users of ceremonies to fix the well

The Great Chicago Fire was one of the significant devastation that happened in the eighteenth
century. Through this tragic event, hundreds of people died and thousands of buildings were
completely destroyed in the fire. Before, the city was flourishing as more people traveled and
decided to call Chicago their home. After the fire destroyed most of the surrounding area, people
began blaming one another for the deaths of all the people. As time passed, Chicagoslowly began to

the city boomed with the abundance of money and people. Moreover, because there was

Ancient Calendars
Accepted systems for the division of time into days, months, and years, calendars reflect a human
effort to measure and order extended periods of the future. Scholars divide calendars into three
general categories lunar, solar, and lunisolar depending upon whether their temporal divisions are
principally based upon the movements of the moon or the sun or on a compromise between both.
Regarding Western forms of chronology, in which solar reckoning of time predominates, historians
have studied calendar reform, which encapsulates many scientific advancements and cosmological
debates of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. In their studies of other parts of the world, where ...

Building upon the work of the astronomer Christoph Clavius, whose calculations had produced a
closer approximation of the tropical year, the Gregorian Reform removed centurial leap years,
except for those divisible by 400. While the reform was rapidly accepted throughout Catholic
Europe, Protestant countries were resistant. Over time, new scientific discoveries concerning the
mechanics of the universe were brought to light, causing astronomers, regardless of religious
persuasion, to acknowledge the errors of the old system. Notably, as the work of Sir Isaac Newton
in the seventeenth century effectively annihilated the last remnants of the ancient and flawed
Ptolemaic cosmological model and presented a new vision of the universe, resistance began to
erode. Eventually the German states fell into line by 1699, in large part due to the lobbying efforts
of Newton s contemporary, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Still, the change was not accepted until
1752 in England, where, tradition has it, the loss of 11 days in the calendar sparked protest the so
called British time riots throughout the

I have always wanted to become a nurse. As a child, I always looked forward to my grandmother
coming home and telling me all the stories from the day. Whether it was a good or a bad
outcome, her stories at the hospital were always an inspiration to me. When I was 8 years old, I

realized the distinct hardships that underserved populations around the globe face. This is where
my love for nursing heightened, and my knowledge of public health emerged.
In addition to my Quito trip, I have traveled to Costa Rica and Nicaragua where I worked with
medical staff to improve the health in various schools and communities. In Costa Rica, we hosted
educational lectures, provided screenings to children, assisted the doctor in the examining room,

One simulation showed talking on a cell phone is much more dangerous than talking to a

news report reported that the State Highway Patrol logged fifty more fatalities than in the same
period for the prior year. The Highway Patrol noted that nineteen fatalities were the result of
distracted driving. The problems of distracted driving exist throughout the United States. For
example, this year Wisconsin enacted a law prohibiting texting while driving due to the danger of
distracted driving. In New York, students at the State University of New York Fredonia (SUNY)
sponsored a texting awareness week to make college students more aware of the risks of distracted
driving. The dangers of distracted driving have led the United States Department of Transportation
to make a major initiative to develop solutions to end distracted driving. The impact of distracted
driving has led President Obama to declare December, 2010 as National Impaired Driving
Prevention Month. Many states have addressed the problem by prohibiting texting while driving.

Persuasive Speech On North Korea
The sight beheld by those who live in this prestigious empire is that of despondency. Born into our
young or toiling away in their jobs is this horrid exoticness. These exotics who are spewed from
their native countries in prodigious numbers are the cause of the present deplorable state of this
nation.
While one party may be tip toeing around this grievance, we those who so desire only to see our
nation rise again to its former glory demand a solution one that is fair, cheap, and easy to assuage
the strife brought to our fair (white) nation.
Other projectors are grossly mistaken in their contemplation. For many years I ve let my mind

of many thousands. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

at what fine example North Korea has made of itself, I say we put China and Berlin to shame:

ticket was a complicated, drawn out process. To counter this, Southwest implemented its own
reservation system tailored to their own needs, which also included the industry s first paperless
ticketing system; but this wasn t the end of IT innovation from Southwest Airlines. In 1995,
Southwest.com was launched, and the online ticketing and reservation system was launched in
1996. Soon thereafter, Southwest Airlines ticket sales were primarily coming from their online
reservation system (70%). By the late 90 s, Southwest.com was the most visited airlinewebsite [4].
By the start of the millennium, Southwest airlines had already mastered another IT milestone

Community Policing Issues
Police administrators have to hold their officers to a high ethical standard and the officials
themselves must be held to a high moral level, if law enforcement agencies and community
relationships are going to be strengthened. According to Rukus, Warner, and Zhang, Community
policing strategies were designed to give residents greater empowerment by allowing them to
participate in deliberations on policing and work more closely with officers on the street
(Community Oriented Policing Services, 2014). In order for officers ethics to be shown, they must
communicate and bond with the citizens in the communities that they serve. Today, many people
just believe that policeofficers are bad because officers have been portrayed as individuals who just
arrest and shoot people. Police officers should communicate with people every day, not just when
they are arresting someone or serving warrants. Overall, the article by Rukus was very informative.
It highlighted the pros of law enforcementagencies, building community relationships and the

Four Strings Research Paper
Violins and cellos both have four strings.
The violin and the cello have several differences in the size, tuning, tone production and length of
each string. These distinctions make the difference between violin and cello response and tone. A
professional string player will choose the strings used on his instrument very carefully to match the
style of playing.
Tunings
The violin and the cello both have four strings. However, the strings are tuned to different
pitches. The lowest string on the violin is tuned to a G, while the lowest string on a cello is tuned
to a C an octave plus a fifth lower than the G. The remaining strings move by fifths on both
instruments. This gives the pitches C, G, D and A on the cello and G, D, A and E on the violin.
Thickness
The thickness of violin and cello strings is significantly different. You would not be able to take
a violin string and put it on a cello. In general, the lowest strings on a cello and violin will be the
thickest strings, and the strings become thinner as you ascend. A low C cello string is almost twice
as thick as the lowest G string on the violin. Additionally, some performers purposely select thicker
than average strings to get a richer tone.

Essay about Aristotle’s Three Categories of Friendships
Friendships are special relationships that begin the development of social skills in each human
person. Every time we open the door to form new friendships it begins with an experimental and
holistic practice of philosophy and science. Whether we recognize the use of philosophy and
science or not it s being applied to shape friendships. The formation and bond of friendships has
been studied for many years through science, philosophy, and theology. The point of this paper is
to give the point of view and purpose of friendshipaccording to science, philosophy, and theology
and how it is applied to our everyday life. For years the formation of friendship has been evaluated

In order for the bond to last for a lifetime, self disclosure and supportiveness also needs to continue.
In life there are many changes that can cause a true friendship to go wary such as marriage, divorce,
birth of children, new careers, and sickness. However, through each of those events the two must
remember to keep the intimacy, the letting down of emotional barriers and the expression of
innermost thoughts and feelings, that which makes friendships thrive must be an enjoyable one
and to always interact (Karbo 3). Although psychologists continue to research the formation of
friendships the great philosopher Aristotle knew exactly how friendships formed and how the
lasted. In the book Aristotle and the Philosophy of Friendship, (based off the Nicomachean Ethics)
the author, Pangle, informed the audience that Aristotle believe in three different types of
friendships based off three different types of motives: Friendships of Utility, Friendships of
Pleasure, and Perfect Friendship. He identifies these types of friendships as different types of

Ali And The Decline Of The Ottoman Empire
Following the death of Suleyman I in 1566, the Ottoman empire began a period of decline led by a
succession of poor sultans. The palace government broke up into numerous, corrupt factions, and
problems with theft led to financial losses. While coinage was losing value and causing inflation,
the once advanced empire fell behind technologically. Selim III came to power in 1789 with hopes
of reviving the Ottoman army, but fell short when the older janissary troops resisted and overthrew
him. At the same time, nationalist feelings, inspired by the now free Greece and self ruled Serbia,
were stirring among the Ottoman people. As Europeans were expanding their territory through 20th
and 21st century imperialism, these weaknesses of the Ottomans became... Show more content on

Russia hoped to gain access to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and twice Persia was
forced to give up territories to Russia. Britain hoped to gain control of Afghanistan in order to
use it as a buffer between India and Russia. In 1857, despite resistance, Persia was forced to give
up all claims to Afghanistan. Persia as a nation lacked the funds to develop its abundant
resources. In order to raise capital and increase their economic standing, the Persian rulers began
granting concessions, which allowed businesses to purchase the right to operate in a certain
place or to develop a certain product, to Western businesses. The willingness of the leaders to
sell concessions and the refusal of the people to allow Western influence in their countries created
tensions. In one such instance, Jamal al Din al Afghani staged a tobacco boycott to protest Nasir
al Din s selling of a concession to a British company to export Persian tobacco. The boycott was
effective, and leaders were forced to cancel the concession. However, growing unrest as a result
created proved uncontrollable. In 1907, Russian and Britain had taken over the country and divided
it into their own spheres of influence. The economic control exercised over Persia thereafter is
similar to the economic imperialism that many European imperialists utilized in Muslim

Jeremy Bentham Research Paper
English philosopher, economist, and theoretical judge are only a few words that describe Jeremy
Bentham, but one word that really sums up what he was, utilitarianism. Born in February 1748 in
London, England. His mother was the daughter of a shop clerk and his father and grandfather
was well established lawyer with a small practice, but most of the family s income came from his
father s purchase and selling of land. During his early childhood years, Bentham displayed a
remarkable gift for learning. By the time he was four years of age his father began to teach

Russian Gulag Essay
The Gulags of the Soviet Union have been compared to the concentration camps of Nazi
Germany, but in reality they were worse. The Gulags were isolated prison camps peppered across
Siberia. Death, torture, and disease raged within their walls, while endless work went on outside.
Gulag personnel were cruel and unfeeling, using terrible punishment methods and playing senseless
games that cost prisoners their lives. Political enemies of the Bolshevik party made up a significant
portion of the prisoner population, with most sent to the infamous camp system Kolyma. Liberation
was painfully slow, but by 1960, all of the Gulags were gone.

In addition to this, in the mindset of the day, if someone was suspected of anti Bolshevik
activities, they were automatically guilty. The investigator would look for anything he could find
that could possibly make the person guilty at all. Sometimes the investigator would take up a
random piece of literature, say it was bad, and have the suspect shipped off, even if the
incriminating evidence was something as benign as the children s story Goodnight Moon. The
investigator would not be the one to tell the suspect what he was even accused of; he would just
take the evidence and people would soon kidnap the suspect and toss him in a cattle car to Siberia,
which was cramped with a mass of other convicts. When the prisoners reached the Gulag, an official
there would take everyone s valuables and toss the convicts into cramped cells. The interrogation
could start at any time. For some the interrogations were that day, and for others it never came and
their lives were lived out in the dirty cells. When and if the interrogator got a confession out of
someone, a prison sentence was read out and the convict was sent off to the actual Gulag.
Interrogation was possibly the most terrifying part of the early Gulag prison term. The interrogator
could be anyone with any type of personality, but he or she always had a myriad of torture methods

The Search For Happiness In Hermann Hesse s Siddhartha
Love is the most important thing in the world (Hesse, 147). This is was Siddhartha, in Hermann
Hesse s novel Siddhartha, discovers after a life long search for happiness. Over the course of this
life long expedition, he learns to find compassion and an understanding of himself and the world
around him, which leads him to a great transformation, going from hating himself, to finding
compassion, love, for himself, and finally finds a purposein his life. This is the process to finding
happiness, reforming their perspective of not only their selves, but also the world and people
around them, and using that to develop their own purpose. Compassion, exalted by Buddhism, is a
foundation of happiness, specifically compassion for others. In Hermann Hesses novel Siddhartha,
the main character, Siddhartha, longs for happiness him self and attempts to change who he is in
order to find it, however it is not until he learned to appreciate himself and the rest of the world
that he found the happiness he seeked. Early in his journey, Siddhartha insisted that others were
not worth a passing glance... [and] were illusions of sense, happiness, and beauty. (Hesse, 14) With
this distaste, it is clear that Siddhartha is not happy, stating the world tasted bitter. Life was pain
(14). It was not until he learned to love and appreciate others, that he discovered happiness. He
compares himself to those he once despised, accepting that they were much alike: If they are

An Report On Ethical Consumerism
This report analyses what ethical consumerism (EC) is and how it relates to customers
performance. First it provides four types of Ethical buying: positive buying, negative purchasing,
and company based purchasing and fully screened approach. It then takes a look at the position of
Marks and Spencer as a company on how they act ethically, and their social responsibilityinitiatives
based on its core values.
Overall this report will be based on the impact of organic, fair trade, environmental impact and
stewardship council when buying things.
Ethical Consumerism
Ethical consumerism is the moral buying and association where a company imposes to sell
products ethically where it is not just the profit they focus on but the idea of giving ... Show more

However Shaw et al (2005) argued that customers consider to be ethical, affordable and to do
what companies claim they do which is making decisions on the basis of ethical values. For
example people will not buy a product if inot ethically right, they will still consider price and
quality far important to consider for ethical consumers. As shaw reveled that ethical consumers
tend to become aware of other issue and include them in their decision making and effectively
become a habit (e.g. vegetarainism, recycling) An example of a product which falls into an ethical
category is Ethos Home Ware, which develops a range of home ware products that helps children
realise their potential to do anything they dream of recyclying.
Ethical consumerism could either be an individual based activity or an organizational based
activity where a campaign encourages people to act more ethically regarding behaviour. Ethical
consumerism has three major variables: which are listed below
Personal interest
Society interest
Environmental interest
In today s society, ethical consumerism can be seen as a significant way of thinking about the
responsibilities individuals take in respect to fair trade and eco friendly products. The study of
(Chris Arnot, Et al) also shows that fair trade products represent a large and rowing market sector
world wide. Marks and Spencer has also taken interest in ethical in the environment when reporting

Functionalism And Social Disorganization
What is functionalist? Functionalist is a type of phenomenon that creates a social order. This
also gives people some type of perpus in life and makes them want to contribute to society. Over
time this type of behavior become a pattern. Emile Durkheim was the one who came with this
theory. What is social disorganization? Social disorganization is when someone does not care
about the rules and acts a certain way. This could also be a group of people. Social disorganization
could be seen as a type of perspective on deviance and crime. Social disorganization is very
common in lower class men because they are less likely to do good in school. Functionalist is the

The resilience methodology seeks to build on strengths and strengthen the supports and
opportunities of the child. Resilience plays a vital role in assisting a child in settling into a new
placement, without experiencing major emotional difficulties. Three factors that promote resilience
are secure base, Self esteem and Self efficacy(Grotberg, 2000). These can be influenced by positive
experiences on a daily basis, some which will be highlighted throughout the assignment.
Resilience in an individual refers to successful adaptation, despite the risk and adversity. The
manner in which Matson 2004 defines resilience is very clear to me, as I can relate and reflect
this to one particular girl that resided in the care centre I worked. Throughout the young girl s
childhood, she developed an insecure and ambivalent attachment to both her parents, as a result of
their hectic lifestyle of substance misuse. At a young age her father died from the HIV viruses,
which lead her mother in becoming depressed and profoundly dependant on drugs. Due to the
mother s dependency, she was unable to respond accordingly to the girls needs, given very mixed
and inconsistent responses. At the age of 10, due to extreme neglect, the young girl was removed
from her mothers care and entered the care setting. Over the years the young girl had experienced
several placement breakdowns, and at 13 was admitted to a residential centre. During this time she

Glass Cockpit Case Study
A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH A WARNING SYSTEM After graduating from the University
of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering with a degree in computer engineering, I was
offered a job at Company X, a recreational aircraft manufacture. Several years later, I was made
the head of a team tasked with designing the code for the glass cockpit of a new airplane that
Company X plans to produce. The glass cockpit is a screen that displays data such as airspeed,
altitude, and vertical airspeed. This technology replaces the analog gauges that have been used
in almost every airplane for the past century. The advantage of the glass cockpit is that it takes
all the raw data that would have otherwise been displayed by the gauges, processes it, and then
displays in an easy understand picture of aircrafts current situation and position. This allows the
pilot to spend less time referring to the numerous gauges around the cockpit, and more time
focusing on situational awareness [1]. With the deadline for completion only one week away,
the code for the glass cockpit is going through its final tests. During the test of the carburetor ice
warning system, it was found that under certain conditions, the warning light may not be
displayed when ice is forming inside of the carburetor. If no warning light is displayed, the pilot
may not know to take corrective action if he has also missed the other indications of ice
forming, such as a drop in the engines rotations per minute (RPM). If no corrective action is
taken, then the carburetor could become completely blocked off with ice thus causing the
engine to fail [2]. As a licensed private pilot, I know that a midflight engine failure can be lethal
to the pilot, the passengers, and anyone on the ground who happens to be in the way. I report the
problem to my supervisor and tell him that the team will need at least two more weeks to go
through all the code, find the problem, and fix it. His response is very troubling. He tells me that
because the test results show that the warning system only has the potential to fail under a very
specific set of conditions, it is alright for me to just leave that out of my report. I argue that we
need to fix this problem because it could

Some strange reawakening prompted the Janta Party government under Bharat Ratna Morarji

A Comparison Of The Pantheon And The Parthenon
Introduction
With just a quick glance at pictures taken from a distance of the front of the Pantheon and the
Parthenon, one might conclude that they are the same building or the same design. Both have eight
Greek inspired columns topped with metopes and a triangular pediment at the entry portico (front).
However, any other view and a closer look would reveal substantial differences. Even the condition
of the present buildings would indicate that the buildings are from very different times and, of
course, very different locations.
The Parthenon
The Parthenon is a Greek temple constructed in 447 BC. It was designed by the architect/artist
Phidias and commissioned by Perikles after the Peliponnesian War to worship the Greek goddess,
Athena. Reed (2005) The building is a classical Greek structure in the Doric order known as a

room. The building was and is famous for its ornate sculpture on the surface of the temple along the

Effectiveness of In School Programs and After School programs

Abstract
In recent years, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) noticed the
increase in the number of teens between the ages of nine to seventeen being involved with gangs in
the United States. While most people would agree that gang membership is an individual choice,
scholars believe that it is more important to shift the focus of these programs from an individual
level to a community level. This literature review examines a few of the prevention programs the
OJJDP have implemented in the school s curriculum and after school ... Show more content on

The program is only effective so long as the teenager allows it to be. In other words, growing up
in an undeveloped community and a poor family could be contributing factors towards pushing
adolescent teens towards violence, drugs, and gangs. However, it is likely that if the teen is able
to shift their focus towards the positive aspects in their life, they can overcome the difficulties. I
say this because my cousin was raised in a good household, yet he chose to be involved with the
wrong crowd even after his parents raised him in a good neighborhood, with a good education,
and participated in many extracurricular activities. After sending him off to boot camp to try
and straighten him up, he still returned to his gang in which he calls his second family.
Therefore, I feel biased towards the effectiveness of these programs. However, I will remain
objective in researching this topic. I will look into all contributing factors and all of the
preventive techniques in assessing the problem. I will also compare both programs and analyze
the two programs in depth. I will look into all the factors and theories contributing to why teens
would join gangs. Also I will evaluate the effectiveness of the program based on my research and
not my personal experience.

An organisation s culture refers to the way we do things around here and is determined by the
values, attitudes and beliefs of the people who work within it. As such, culture will undoubtedly
influence the success of a business. In particular, it can be argued that an innovative culture can

BMW use a similar culture where everyone is expected to help find solutions. They have a network
of committed associates with few hierarchical barriers, allowing every employee to voice their
opinion. This culture has allowed BMW to promote new products and get the product just right
through thousands of brainstorming sessions. These examples show how innovation can lead to
success in technological industries.
Innovative culture can be relied on to guarantee the future success of a business, as the external
environment is constantly changing. This can be linked to Charles Handy s theory of discontinuous
change which means that in the future change is constant, and therefore an innovative culture
would most likely guarantee a business success. Being highly innovative would mean that managers
would have to be flexible and react to the constantly changing external environment, therefore
adopting an innovative culture would mean businesses would have to come up with ideas and
strategies for the future in order for the business to remain competitive and successful. Innovative
culture should equip firms with the ability to cope better with change. For example Intel s strategy
of diversification where they use tactics such as job swapping and controlled employee role

A crystal is made up of the same materials that a regular glass is made of, such as silica, soda, and

Generally, heterogeneous nucleation takes place more quickly since the foreign particles act as a
place or structure for the crystal to grow on. Heterogeneous nucleation is slower and can take place
by several methods. Some of the most typical are small inclusions, or cuts, in the container the
crystal is being grown on. (Dr. Helmenstine, A. M. 2011) After nucleation has taken place, then the
second stage is growth. The growth stage is when the crystals actually start to form. The solute
molecule in the solution will be attracted to the protocrystal until more and more molecules bond
together and then the crystal starts to grow until it is a fully formed crystal. Concluding, a crystal
has two stages after supersaturation takes place, nucleation and growth. During these two stages is
when the growth and size of a crystal is determined.
A seed crystal is a common method people use to grow crystals; seed crystal is categorized under
assisted nucleation, so the process of growing a crystal becomes faster. A seed crystal is created
by supersaturation (Banfield, J., amp; Wallace, H. c. 2002). When the supersaturated solution has
cooled down, seed crystals form at the bottom of the solution (Thackwray, M. 2003). After a
crystal seed is formed, it is used to grow a crystal. The crystal seed is tied to a string. Then the

what the American individual is expected to be. In this song, the American individual is
described as one who follows all labels and is considered perfect in the eyes of society, and
BeyoncГ© further explains how this idea is incorrect. In one of the opening lines, BeyoncГ©
says, What s in your head it doesn t matter / Brush your hair, fix your teeth / What you wear is all
that matters (BeyoncГ© Lines 2 4). Given this, it is understood that an American individual should
not show how they are really feeling. No matter what is going on inside, one must present... Show

Given this, it is explained that the expectations listed above are the problems with society.
Society s expectations of perfection and hiding of emotions give unrealistic ideas to women
about the individuals they should be. Instead of trying to fit the expectations of society,
everyone should reveal their flaws and be proud of themselves. When everyone tries to be
perfect, they are only disappointed because of how unrealistic and impossible it is to achieve
their goal of perfection. These expectations and disappointments are the problems with society,
because perfection is an unachievable objective. These lines explain that the American individual
should not be one to follow societal expectations, even though it is falsely believed that
perfection makes the ideal individual. An additional line that describes the American individual
is, South beach, sugar free / Vogue says / Thinner is better (BeyoncГ© 19 21). Considering this,
BeyoncГ© is explaining that society believes everyone should be thin which can be achieved by
being sugar free. Only those who are sugar free will be skinny and therefore will be satisfying
society. Society expects all women to be thin and slender, and not following these expectations not
acceptable. These lines, once again, explain that the American individual is expected to be thin, or
in other words, an unrealistic

The Middle East And The European Powers Changes During The...
How did the relationship between the Middle East and the European powers change during the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries?
Many things happened in the Middle East during the eighteenth and nineteen century. For example,
the book Sources in the History of The Modern Middle east gives us some of the events that
happened in the Middle East during nineteen century such as;
Central Political Reforms and Local Responses

This mixture of ethnicities, there are major conflicts of religious, territorial order (including the
struggle for water) and economic (because of oil). During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
two main events changed the relationship between Middle east and Europe; Napoleonic Invasion
and The decline of the Ottoman Empire and the British.
Egypt was a place of the oldest civilizations (4000 BC) that even Alexander s command, the Great
(322 BC), is ruled by dynasties. In the following centuries, the Nile people are dominated by Roman
(first century BC), Byzantine (fourth century), Arabs (seventh century) which impose Islam and
Turkish Ottoman (XVI century).
It Faces Napoleonic invasion in the late eighteenth century, but the framework of European
penetration is the construction of the Suez Canal (1869) and the British occupation in 1882 until
1936, when they spend to maintain troops only in the channel. In 1922 Egypt proclaims
independence and install a monarchy. During World War II was the scene of conflict between
British against German and Italian. The post war crisis and defeat for the Israelis against the
creation of this state (1948) cause antimonarquistas and anticolonial protests. In this context,
Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser ascends to power to depose the monarch regime and proclaim a
republic in 1953 and promote agrarian reform and industrialization in 1954 and nationalized the

The Judicial Arms Of The Eu
The Court of Justice of the European Union and the General Court are the judicial arms of the EU .
Critically analyse with reference to the function, personnel and procedures of these two EU courts.
Since the UK joined the EU in 1973 under Edward Heath the UK legal system has been inferior to
the EU legal system. The EU s main judicial arms are the Court of the Justice of the European Union
(CJEU) which was established under the European Coal and Steel Community Treaty (1951) and
the General Court (GC) which was established in 1986. The General Court was originally
referred to as the Court of First Instance however has since been renamed under the Lisbon
Treaty (2009) as the GC in which cases can be appealed to the CJEU but only on points of law.
The EU is only able to legislate on areas where it is empowered to by treaties for example on areas
such as trade, competition, single market legislation, agriculture and justice.
The CJEU is the highest court in the EU. It is comprised of one judge from each member state
and is supported by eight Advocate Generals whose role it is to provide an impartial and public
opinion on the case brought before the CJEU. The primary function of the CJEU is to ensure that
the interpretation and application of the EU law established by treaties is observed (Treaty of
Rome: 1958). This is a necessity as the homogenous responsibility of the EU needs to be maintained
as to insure community relationships between member states. The GC is a branch

The Emotional Scene In Act IV Scene IV, By William...
Many seem to see Act IV Scene IV as lighthearted and simple or even boring, but this scene is a
truly actually very complex scene due to some and carries some dark undertones. The spring setting
directly contrasts thewith tense discussions and dark themes of death and decay. This comes to a
head when Polixenes reveals himself, sentencing the Old Shepard to death, and Perditato be horribly
disfigured. Throughout the scene, Polixenes actually seems like a mirror for Leontes s actions in
the first three acts. Overall, this scene is definitely more than meets the eye.
Act IV Scene IV, also known as the pastoral scene, opens with Florizel and Perdita, two young
lovers, talking. Florizel is excited for the sheep shearing festival they will be ... Show more content

This entire speech goes against the tone of the scene, and of the last two acts in general. The
king, it seems, has taken a page right out of Leontes book; in a fit of rage, he sentences several
people to cruel fates. Autolycus takes this theme of death to the extreme when he tries to scam the
Old Shepherd and the Clown. He mentions how the Clown will allegedly be flayed and tortured in
other horrible ways. This scares the Shepherd and Clown so much that they gladly pay the thief to
take them to

The Global Financial System Is A Web Of Connections
Srdan Vujnovic
Short Paper Assignment II: LIBOR
The global financial system is a web of connections. It does not matter what country, ethnicity or
religion a person is. It does not matter if you are a democrat, republican, communist, socialist or
anarchist. We all share this common bond money. The following analysis will explain what LIBOR
is, how manipulating LIBOR can have negative effects on the global economy, and what steps the
global financial industry can take to ensure that a similar scandal never occurs again.
I.
Analysis of LIBOR and its manipulation
What the major global banks decide to do can ultimately affect a farmer living in the
Democratic Republic of Congo, thousands of miles away from the people that directly or
indirectly affected his life. One of those ways that people across the globe are connected are
through different financial rates, one of those rates being LIBOR. LIBOR stands for London
Inter Bank Offered Rate. It is one of many benchmarks that banking institutions use to set interest
rates for lending between banks (Romano Peluso). LIBOR is an interest rate that banks charge each
other for overnight, one month, three month, six month and one year loans. It is published in five
currencies which include the Swiss franc, the euro, the pound sterling, the
Japanese yen and of course the dollar (Kimberly Amadeo). While most LIBOR based contracts are
linked to the 3 month rate, the majority of the lending happens overnight. Most banks have a

Ethnic Identity And Cultural Beliefs
Introduction: Around Twelve thousand years ago, human beings learn basic agriculture and animal
domestication. This allowed a human being to create societies which allowed ethnic groups to
emerge. An ethnic group is a group of people that share similar ancestry, physical traits, customs and
cultures with each other. A person s ethnicityis important to their identity since they grew up
learning about their ancestry s past and culture in order to understand social interaction and
behavior. Culture s is subunit to a Person s ethnicity since it is the knowledge, beliefs, and customs
of the ethnic groups history and experience. It influences a individual to speak a certain language,
eat a specific diet, and practice a religion that is important to their region. It can also help explain
why a person wears a specific design of clothing or interacts differently with people of the
opposite sex since culture shapes an individual s social behavior. It is a key block to a person s
identity since it allows individuals to connect to a community that has been practicing and
spreading it since its conception. Many countries today, such the United States, are home to dozens
of ethnic groups and their culture. I have been exposing too many ethnic groups and their cultures
while growing up in Orange County but I never realize their importance in our daily lives until I
started to take ethnic studies courses in the community college. That is where I begin to appreciate

How Morals Were Shaped Through The Creation Stories
How morals were shaped through the creation stories in the book of Genesis The first principle
of value that we need to rediscover is this: that all reality hinges on moral foundations. In other
words, that this is a moral universe, and that there are moral laws of the universe just abiding as
the physical laws (Martin Luther King Jr.). Everyone around the world, regardless of gender, race,
religion, and political views are defined by their own moral compass. The decisions that people
make are heavily influenced by their own unique moral compass that was shaped through the
culture and societal norms exposed around them. In particular, the book Genesis describes the
creation of man and through their creation, brings forth the ideal... Show more content on

However, this creation story raises multiple questions regarding
Huynh 2 morality in today s contemporary beliefs. Before, people may blindly take it that God is
always right and that we should obey Him because we will be severely punished if we disobey.
Now, people in general have become more open minded and analytical with what they read. For
instance, the story depicts that the reason why Adam and Eve were punished because they ate
the fruit that gave them knowledge of right and wrong. However, Adam and Eve did not know
the difference between right and wrong before eating the fruit. For example, after eating the
fruit, Adam and Eve knew it was wrong for them to be naked and tried to cover themselves. So
was it right for God to punish Adam and Eve when they did not know that it was right or wrong
to disobey Him? Is it moral to punish those who do not understand what is right and wrong,
much less differentiate the two? In fact, the first story in Genesis shows how destructive God
can be to those who do not obey His commands which raises questions about morality to the
reader. Depending on the reader s interpretation, the story influences their moral compass.
Several interpretations could be: It is morally wrong to disobey God and to disobey God means we
will face dire consequences or It is morally wrong to disobey God, but was it unjust for God to
punish those who are ignorant of what is

Saks Fifth Avenue vs. Neiman Marcus
I am writing to analyse the company s current balance sheet and income statement. Particularly, I
will critique on the company s results, compare it to past years, compare it to competitors, and make
recommendations on how to improve its financial position.
Neiman Marcus department stores offer luxurious and high quality men s and women s apparel and
accessories. The Neiman Marcus Group operates 35 stores in nearly 20 states. The 2004 net
income was an impressive $204 million and revenue was $3.5 billion. More importantly, their
gross profit was $1.2 billion. Their net income is approximately 5.8% (compared to total revenue)
and 1.7% (compared to their gross profit). This may seem little, but when a company revenues such

Unfortunately, the accounts payable outweighs the cash account, but nevertheless, the net
receivables account is at $560 million. After receiving that amount and including the cash, they
will be able to pay off their entire accounts payable, as well as short term and long term debt.
Lastly, the long term debt is at a mere $324 million. This is only 13% of their total assets, meaning
that the company owns most of their assets.
Again, in comparison to Saks, Neiman Marcus is far better managed. Saks s total assets are an
impressive $4.7 billion, but current assets make up only 44% of it. Most of their money is valued
in power plant and equipment $2 billion. Also, Saks has high current liabilities of $966 million
and an even higher $1.1 billion in long term debt. They are not able to pay off these liabilities with
their cash.
Recommendations based on the balance sheet are little, since the company is performing so well.
Firstly, we can increase cash meaning, make more sales and have more discounts to attract
buyers. Furthermore, increase service sales. Introduce a dry cleaning line or a tailor service.
Secondly, increase property more stores. We see that we are performing well and with more
stores, we will increase assets. By doing so, we increase our collateral and gain more financial
status. Overall, the company is performing very well

Language Assessment And Language Proficiency
Language Assessment and Language Proficiency Standard There are three main goals in teaching
English as a second language. These goals are: To use English to communicate in social settings,
to use English to achieve academically in all content areas and to use English in socially and
culturally appropriate ways (Short, 2000). With these goals in mind, language proficiency
standards (LPS) have been developed to help insructors achieve the highest level of ESL
instruction. The Educate America Act of the early 1990 s fostered a movement among professional
educationassociations to develop standards for specific academic content areas (Short, 2000). These
national standards were for federal and state insitutions to have guidelines in designing curriculum
and assessments. Also these standards would help promote the professional develop of teachers.
How do assessments based on language proficiency standards promote language learning?
According to the Center for Adult English Language Acquisition(CAELA) assessments are defined
as , The use of instruments and procedures to gather data on a regular basis for such purposes as
identifying learners needs, documenting learners progress, or determining how program services
are meeting learners needs (CAELA, 2015). Assessments are used to help instructors evaluate how
effective their teaching methods are, to help students know how much information they have
obtained and to inform admiration see the

Examples Of Theatricalism In Angels In America
Three ways in which Angels in America fits the qualifications of theatricalism: In order to
understand the examples that I give, firstly, I will provide a brief definition of theatricalism.
Theatricalism, for the purpose of answering the question, is the following of a 20th century theatre
movement, that rather than being focused on the natural world, and staying true to that realism,
focused on the story and lesson to be said and taught without regard to whether or not the work
was realistic. Example 1, The Angel: The angel is probably the most obvious example of
theatricalism, because, though angels, may or may not exist, it is unheard of to be visited by one.
Yet, by not focusing on what is, rather what can or could be, the angel

Aggregate Demand In America
Weak aggregate demand and rising costs due to still high energy and food prices put the US
economy in a tricky situation, one in which the Federal Reserve is forced to make the tough
decision between tackling the unemployment problem (jobless rates have risen to 5.7%) or the
inflation problem (price levels have also risen 5.7% this year, the highest inflationin 17 years).
Rising prices and rising joblessness are both harmful to the economy, but when energy and food
prices drive up the price level, while week investment and consumer spending lead to falling overall
demand in the economy, the conditions exist where joblessness and prices can rise simultaneously.
This is America s situation at present. In the short run, however, the decline

  • 2. Stereotypes And Media Analysis Your television and computer are controlling every choice you make. Scary thought? Everyday Americans log into their computer or turn on their TV and are fed information from our trusted media. In fact, a Marshall survey states, By 2015, it is estimated that Americans will consume both traditional and digital media for over 1.7 trillion hours, an average of approximately 5 and a half hours per person per day. Unknowingly at times, we are allowing our media to shape the choices we make, the ways we see others, and the way we view ourselves. With most of Americans unaware of the media s control on their choices and views, this can be an alarming realization. Media has a major impact on multiple parts of our society. The media effects politics. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As seen in Effects of Disney s Gender Stereotyping it said Disney has created many movies that make people sacrifice for others. Ariel gave up her voice and many other things just so she could be with Prince Eric. This shows that even companies that are so innocent like Disney are creating these wrong stereotypes. In another video called Always #likeagirl it stated when people say like a girl it s almost always a bad thing. Like you run or throw like a girl it s normally a bad thing. So many people want to make it a good thing. This illustrates that people want to reverse things. 2nd, 3rd, even 1st graders take part in these wrong stereotypes. According to a graph in Middle Eastern and Muslim Stereotypes in Media it said According to Southern illinois university out of 1000 films from 1896 to 2007 that contains Middle Eastern references 12 were good and over 900 hundred were bad. This demonstrates that to many people are being way to stereotypical. Out of 1000 films there was only 12 good references and over 900 bad references! There are such things as good Middle Easterns. • 3. A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway defined a hero as, A man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful. It is blatantly apparent that Henry, the protagonist of A Farewell to Arms, did not exemplify any of these traits at all in the beginning of the novel. However, as the book progressed, Henry gradually learned how to be a Hemingway Hero , and he eventually progressed to the point where he completely embodied all that is expected of such. It is crucial to realize, however, that Henry did not become a textbook example of a Hemingway Hero overnight. It would have been absolutely impossible for Henry to become the man he was at the end of the novel... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Henry experienced during this particular time significantly impacted him and helped him break away from the blueprint of the average soldier . Becoming a member of the army was of great benefit to Henry because it was the one thing that really pushed him over the edge and shattered the world as he knew it. The whole experience of the retreat was a crucial part of the book because it gave Henry the insight he needed to grow into a Hemingway Hero. Events like Aymo s death and Bonello s cowardice definitely influenced Henry, but bigger events like the killing of the sergeant was what really changed Henry the most. Henry s encounter with the battle police was truly sobering as well. He found what they were doing to the officers disgusting and dishonorable, but after all that is what happens amid the chaos of a retreat. I saw how their minds worked; if they had minds and if they worked. They were all young men and they were saving their country (Hemingway 224). When Henry saw the darker side of the army, and just how wrong everything that was happening really was, he truly changed inside. After he finally did escape, he completely abandons the army forever, Anger was washed away in the river along with any obligation (Hemingway 232). It was at this moment Henry truly embodied a Hemingway Hero. Equally important in Henry s development into a Hemingway Hero was his love for Catherine. Before Henry met Catherine he was extremely selfish. This was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These theories go back to the turn of the century and in some cases are considered by the uninformed to be simply fads which come and go. As I have discovered, these theories are rather the steps on a ladder which continually takes us higher and higher. Douglas McGregor in his book, The Human Side of Enterprise published in 1960 has examined theories on behavior of individuals at work, and he has formulated two models which he calls Theory X and Theory Y. Collaborative self directed work teams can get complex projects done at faster rates than the traditional boss worker arrangement, because the decision making process is made faster and more effective in a team. Empowering teams to make decisions about their work also enhances satisfaction and reduces turnover (Berger, 1998). Self directed work teams involve employees in a specific area, or those who are working on a specific product or process. Self directed work teams can be any size, we usually use 5 team members but normally run no more than 12 to 15 employees. The work team makes the decisions that would normally be made by a supervisor or manager, and might interact with the company s suppliers and customers, whether they are inside or outside the company. In some companies, self directed work teams will also take over many of the human resource functions as well (Cotton, 1993). Self directed work teams have also become one of the more changing approaches to employee involvement, and has been increasing in popularity within the last several years. Companies such as Proctor Gamble, Digital Equipment, General Mills, Federal Express and other well known companies, are reorganizing their employees into self directed work teams. In a recent survey, 476 Fortune 500 companies found that although only 7% of the work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Meaning Of Music Meaning In Music, Language, and Composition Adorno, Theodor W. argues that To interpret language means to understand language; to interpret music means to make music. Musical interpretation is the act of execution... (115). However, in The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B Du Bois seems to point out that music carries intention, history, and experiences. Musiccould be a way to share one s feelings and experiences that could not be expressed with the same emotional impact if they were just told through speaking. In other words, Du Bois seems to argue that music does have meaning and to understand music is to be able to express the intention behind or in the music. It is important to note that Adorno s focus of music in Music, Language, and Composition is primarily classical music and Du Bois focus appears to be on music with lyrics. Therefore, music for Adorno had no explicit signifying words. However, rhythm and tone exist in both cases. In Music, Language, and Composition Adorno acknowledges that music is like signifying language in many ways, from its structure to how it is formed. However, music is different from signifying language because it does not have to be created with a solid intention or meaning. In signifying language, the structure and combination of phrases to speech is, to some extent, strategic. The formation of signifying language is strategic because the goal of the formation of the phrase is to express something solid and with certainty as to what it s meaning is. The words that are selected and the sentences that are formed from those words, were chosen and created because meaning needs to be told to others in an accurate manner, so that they ll be able to understand that same meaning. As for music, Adorno seems to claim that, contrary to signifying language, the intent of which is to communicate a solid meaning, music does not need to have any firm goals related to meaning or solid intentions. Instead, the musician will make the music vague because in making the music ambiguous, the music will have the potential to link to multiple meanings that will vary based on the listener. In other words, the listener will be the one to decide the meaning. To add to this, when Adorno says, tthe whole is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We see a split and think that a person is just bad, whereas the Navajo and Hopi cultures have views that are less severe to the individual in question. The Navajo believe that what distinguishes good from evilis control, because acts can be both good and evil. When something has little ability to be controlled by man, the situation has a higher likelihood of being evil. Additionally, the Navajo don t see evil as being a kind of negative moral corruption or an ethical problem. Ancient Calendar Research Paper Muatasim Shaout Bakomihalis English 3 30 September 2016 Ancient Calendars Accepted systems for the division of time into days, months, and years, calendars reflect a human effort to measure and order extended periods of the future. Scholars divide calendars into three general categories lunar, solar, and lunisolar depending upon whether their temporal divisions are principally based upon the movements of the moon or the sun or on a compromise between both. Notably, as the work of Sir Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century effectively annihilated the last remnants of the ancient and flawed Ptolemaic cosmological model and presented a new vision of the universe, resistance began to erode. Eventually the German states fell into line by 1699, in large part due to the lobbying efforts of Newton s contemporary, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. • 15. A Report On Southwest Airlines operated. During this time, travel agent fees were going through the roof and reserving an airline ticket was a complicated, drawn out process. To counter this, Southwest implemented its own reservation system tailored to their own needs, which also included the industry s first paperless ticketing system; but this wasn t the end of IT innovation from Southwest Airlines. In 1995, Southwest.com was launched, and the online ticketing and reservation system was launched in 1996. Soon thereafter, Southwest Airlines ticket sales were primarily coming from their online reservation system (70%). By the late 90 s, Southwest.com was the most visited airlinewebsite [4]. By the start of the millennium, Southwest airlines had already mastered another IT milestone which is still in use to this very day: allowing the passenger to print their own boarding vouchers and allowing passengers to self check in on their own computer even before arriving at the airport [4]! By implementing these two features on the Southwest website, the airline was able to reduce the number of customer service agents at check in counters and allowed customers to spend minimal time waiting at an airport [2]. This increases both passenger and staff efficiency, making the mundane task of waiting around at an airport virtually a thing of the past. • 16. Community Policing Issues Police administrators have to hold their officers to a high ethical standard and the officials themselves must be held to a high moral level, if law enforcement agencies and community relationships are going to be strengthened. According to Rukus, Warner, and Zhang, Community policing strategies were designed to give residents greater empowerment by allowing them to participate in deliberations on policing and work more closely with officers on the street (Community Oriented Policing Services, 2014). In order for officers ethics to be shown, they must communicate and bond with the citizens in the communities that they serve. Today, many people just believe that policeofficers are bad because officers have been portrayed as individuals who just arrest and shoot people. Police officers should communicate with people every day, not just when they are arresting someone or serving warrants. Overall, the article by Rukus was very informative. These distinctions make the difference between violin and cello response and tone. A professional string player will choose the strings used on his instrument very carefully to match the style of playing. Tunings The violin and the cello both have four strings. However, the strings are tuned to different pitches. The lowest string on the violin is tuned to a G, while the lowest string on a cello is tuned to a C an octave plus a fifth lower than the G. The remaining strings move by fifths on both instruments. This gives the pitches C, G, D and A on the cello and G, D, A and E on the violin. Thickness The thickness of violin and cello strings is significantly different. You would not be able to take a violin string and put it on a cello. In general, the lowest strings on a cello and violin will be the thickest strings, and the strings become thinner as you ascend. • 29. Glass Cockpit Case Study A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH A WARNING SYSTEM After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering with a degree in computer engineering, I was offered a job at Company X, a recreational aircraft manufacture. Several years later, I was made the head of a team tasked with designing the code for the glass cockpit of a new airplane that Company X plans to produce. The glass cockpit is a screen that displays data such as airspeed, altitude, and vertical airspeed. This technology replaces the analog gauges that have been used in almost every airplane for the past century. The advantage of the glass cockpit is that it takes all the raw data that would have otherwise been displayed by the gauges, processes it, and then displays in an easy understand picture of aircrafts current situation and position. This allows the pilot to spend less time referring to the numerous gauges around the cockpit, and more time focusing on situational awareness [1]. With the deadline for completion only one week away, the code for the glass cockpit is going through its final tests. During the test of the carburetor ice warning system, it was found that under certain conditions, the warning light may not be displayed when ice is forming inside of the carburetor. If no warning light is displayed, the pilot may not know to take corrective action if he has also missed the other indications of ice forming, such as a drop in the engines rotations per minute (RPM). If no corrective action is taken, then the carburetor could become completely blocked off with ice thus causing the engine to fail [2]. As a licensed private pilot, I know that a midflight engine failure can be lethal to the pilot, the passengers, and anyone on the ground who happens to be in the way. I report the problem to my supervisor and tell him that the team will need at least two more weeks to go through all the code, find the problem, and fix it. His response is very troubling. He tells me that because the test results show that the warning system only has the potential to fail under a very specific set of conditions, it is alright for me to just leave that out of my report. I say this because my cousin was raised in a good household, yet he chose to be involved with the wrong crowd even after his parents raised him in a good neighborhood, with a good education, and participated in many extracurricular activities. All those hours of drills, scrimmages, and runs I had completed seemed useless in that moment. As the bus pulled into the school s parking lot, I quickly got my possessions ready and dashed off. The next day, I did not go to practice. Instead, I wallowed in my despair, pitying myself and shutting everyone out. The weekend came, and I finally decided to go out for a run to let off some steam. As my shoes pounded against the concrete, I found peace as the pent up anger and sadness slipped away. I pass by a tennis court, and catch a glimpse my friends practicing inside. Stopping to catch my breath, I watch as they worked nonstop on their form and positioning. All positive results need effort first. I walked in and joined them. From that day on, I ... Biobottle Lab Report Biobottle Write up In the biobottle experiment, the purpose was to create a closed ecosystem, containing biotic and abiotic factors, which aimed to sustain life without contact with the outside world throughout a period of six weeks. For the procedure, the ecosystem was to be observed over this time. The experiment began when a one quart mason jar with its contents was sealed on October 7, 2015. In the beginning of the experiment, the known contents of the jar and initial rationales behind them (italicized) included: в—ЏWater from the middle pond filled to the 600 mL mark of the jar (about 550 mL): the environment for the aquatic ecosystem with enough room for gases at the surface в—ЏPond mud filled approximately halfway between the bottom and 100 mL mark of the jar: source of nitrogen and miscellaneous organisms в—Џ2 small sandstones: phosphorus used for phosphorus cycle в—Џ1 stick: for animals to use for movement в—Џ1 leaf: nitrogen; it... At the times of the high density of droplets, most of the time the condensation was much like a mist, having just evaporated and not yet condensed. However, as it condensed, there were fewer droplets. As the droplets got bigger, they would rain down in the jar as precipitation due to gravity. Then, the cycle repeated, as shown by the graph. Another cycle that must have been in the jar for life to survive was the carbon and oxygen cycle. In order for the organisms to access new oxygen after the initial air was trapped in the jar, producers supplied the animals with oxygen, seen as bubbles in the algae throughout the observation period. In addition, since the algae survived and appeared to have grown, the organisms must have been supplying the producers with their necessary carbon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These examples show how innovation can lead to success in technological industries. Innovative culture can be relied on to guarantee the future success of a business, as the external environment is constantly changing. This can be linked to Charles Handy s theory of discontinuous change which means that in the future change is constant, and therefore an innovative culture would most likely guarantee a business success. Being highly innovative would mean that managers would have to be flexible and react to the constantly changing external environment, therefore adopting an innovative culture would mean businesses would have to come up with ideas and strategies for the future in order for the business to remain competitive and successful. Ancient Egypt, Rome, and other groups have all used crystals for various purposes. Heterogeneous nucleation is slower and can take place by several methods. Some of the most typical are small inclusions, or cuts, in the container the crystal is being grown on. (Dr. Helmenstine, A. M. 2011) After nucleation has taken place, then the second stage is growth. The growth stage is when the crystals actually start to form. The solute molecule in the solution will be attracted to the protocrystal until more and more molecules bond together and then the crystal starts to grow until it is a fully formed crystal. Concluding, a crystal has two stages after supersaturation takes place, nucleation and growth. During these two stages is when the growth and size of a crystal is determined. A seed crystal is a common method people use to grow crystals; seed crystal is categorized under assisted nucleation, so the process of growing a crystal becomes faster. A seed crystal is created by supersaturation (Banfield, J., amp; Wallace, H. c. 2002). When the supersaturated solution has cooled down, seed crystals form at the bottom of the solution (Thackwray, M. 2003). After a crystal seed is formed, it is used to grow a crystal. Given this, it is explained that the expectations listed above are the problems with society. Society s expectations of perfection and hiding of emotions give unrealistic ideas to women about the individuals they should be. Instead of trying to fit the expectations of society, everyone should reveal their flaws and be proud of themselves. When everyone tries to be perfect, they are only disappointed because of how unrealistic and impossible it is to achieve their goal of perfection. These expectations and disappointments are the problems with society, because perfection is an unachievable objective. These lines explain that the American individual should not be one to follow societal expectations, even though it is falsely believed that perfection makes the ideal individual. An additional line that describes the American individual is, South beach, sugar free / Vogue says / Thinner is better (BeyoncГ© 19 21). Considering this, BeyoncГ© is explaining that society believes everyone should be thin which can be achieved by being sugar free. Only those who are sugar free will be skinny and therefore will be satisfying society. Society expects all women to be thin and slender, and not following these expectations not acceptable. Critically analyse with reference to the function, personnel and procedures of these two EU courts. Since the UK joined the EU in 1973 under Edward Heath the UK legal system has been inferior to the EU legal system. The EU s main judicial arms are the Court of the Justice of the European Union (CJEU) which was established under the European Coal and Steel Community Treaty (1951) and the General Court (GC) which was established in 1986. The General Court was originally referred to as the Court of First Instance however has since been renamed under the Lisbon Treaty (2009) as the GC in which cases can be appealed to the CJEU but only on points of law. The EU is only able to legislate on areas where it is empowered to by treaties for example on areas such as trade, competition, single market legislation, agriculture and justice. The CJEU is the highest court in the EU. This allowed a human being to create societies which allowed ethnic groups to emerge. An ethnic group is a group of people that share similar ancestry, physical traits, customs and cultures with each other. A person s ethnicityis important to their identity since they grew up learning about their ancestry s past and culture in order to understand social interaction and behavior. Culture s is subunit to a Person s ethnicity since it is the knowledge, beliefs, and customs of the ethnic groups history and experience. How Morals Were Shaped Through The Creation Stories How morals were shaped through the creation stories in the book of Genesis The first principle of value that we need to rediscover is this: that all reality hinges on moral foundations. In other words, that this is a moral universe, and that there are moral laws of the universe just abiding as the physical laws (Martin Luther King Jr.). Everyone around the world, regardless of gender, race, religion, and political views are defined by their own moral compass. However, this creation story raises multiple questions regarding Huynh 2 morality in today s contemporary beliefs. Before, people may blindly take it that God is always right and that we should obey Him because we will be severely punished if we disobey. Now, people in general have become more open minded and analytical with what they read. For instance, the story depicts that the reason why Adam and Eve were punished because they ate the fruit that gave them knowledge of right and wrong. However, Adam and Eve did not know the difference between right and wrong before eating the fruit. For example, after eating the fruit, Adam and Eve knew it was wrong for them to be naked and tried to cover themselves. So was it right for God to punish Adam and Eve when they did not know that it was right or wrong to disobey Him? Is it moral to punish those who do not understand what is right and wrong, much less differentiate the two? In fact, the first story in Genesis shows how destructive God can be to those who do not obey His commands which raises questions about morality to the reader. Depending on the reader s interpretation, the story influences their moral compass. Several interpretations could be: It is morally wrong to disobey God and to disobey God means we will face dire consequences or It is morally wrong to disobey God, but was it unjust for God to punish those who are ignorant of what is ...
