Creating Change within Organizations HCS587
David Harrell
16 January, 2012 *
The Concord Bookshop is a small town bookstore with a 64 year history and a cultural appeal enjoyed
by the citizens of the town. In recent years the economic environment created fierce competition for
the bookstore, coupled with a need for innovative technology meant a need for restructuring. The
financial status of the bookshop was in grave distress. Fearing financial ruin the board members made
a unanimous decision to implement significant changes. However, the board did not take the necessary
steps of including the appropriate stakeholders in the change process and obtaining employee support.

Behaviour Change Change can be successful if a company or group within the organization changes
the way an individual presents oneself (Spector, 2010). Behavior change is based on how an
individual works within the environment. The employees of Concord Bookshop were not consulted
therefore did not have an opportunity to verbalize their concerns or provide input to assist the
company to move the bookstore in a new direction. The management team was aware of the financial
distress and was willing to participate in any financial changes required. The employees of the
bookstore had an abundance of knowledge and experience that may have contributed to ending
financial turmoil (Schein, 2011). Open dialogue between the employees and owners may have
facilitated the development and collaboration of new ideas in a competitive environment. The new
strategies could have provided a new direction for the bookstore. According to Burnes, in discussing
Kurt Lewin s Change Model, for change to be effective within a group there has to be a collective
approach by each member of the group (2004).
Conclusion
The Concord Bookshop was a well respected historical bookstore facing financial challenges. While
the bookstore employed knowledgeable and dedicated employees, the owners and board members did
not engage

Tough Guise 2
Rationale For my written task 1, I will write a satirical article describing a fraternity at a US
university. The subject matter will be mainly about masculinity, and how it would look if the ideal
traits of a masculine person were changed. I will be working with Part One of the English HL course,
specifically under the topic of language and gender. The text that I will be working with will be the
documentary that we watched, Tough Guise 2 . The task is meant to explore masculinity through the
lens of Learning Outcome 1.2, which is Analyze the impact of language changes .To do this, I am
going to change the language and ideas that are generally perpetuated from American University
Fraternity culture from chauvinistic and sexually aggressive to feminist and respectful. The reason that
I chose a satire is because I think that some ideas that Fraternities push on to their members and the
public about what it means to be a real man are ridiculous. The text type that is most conducive to
attacking ridiculous and unbelievable ideas is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason that this Fraternity sticks out so far from the rest is because they skip the traditional
fraternal activities such as charity and Community outreach and instead teach men what they re
recalling going to need to live a fulfilling life. Each chapter makes sure to only exemplify the highest
level of masculinity, with activities including mass sexual assault, alcohol poisoning, and even team
building activities like Cocaine trafficking to really prepare them for the workforce. While some may
argue that these activities are not as beneficial to man s future as the altruistic acts that many run of the
mill fraternities execute, SAE would have to disagree, saying that they do real manly things and that
those who do good for their communities are just whiny, pushover babies and not nearly as much of
men as those in the SAE

The Philadelphia Story Essay
There is no doubt that The Philadelphia Story is one of the best American romantic comedy file in
1904. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart are protagonist in this film, but Katherine
Hepburn s acting make me so impressive. After finishing watching this film, I fall in love with this
wonderful story not just because Katharine Hepburn is a beautiful as well as elegant lady, but lots of
plots of this film are thoughtful and interesting. The most important event in The Philadelphia Story is
the second wedding for a lady, Tracy, who is born in a rich family in Philadelphia. Since Dexter, who
is Tracy s first husband, cannot match her standards, she gets divorce with him in the end. Two years
after her divorce, she is going to get married again. What s more, her fiancé is a very famous person;
therefore, one of the most well known magazine wants to report Tracy s second wedding. In order to
help a photographer and a journalist join the wedding, Dexter asks them to pretend to be friends of
Tracy s brother. However, it cannot escape Tracy s eyes, and she finds out their trick quickly after she
sees them. Unfortunately, even though she knows they are not she brother s friend, she cannot say
anything about that and neither her family can because the magazine has evident to show that her
father has affair with a lady dancer. And if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, Costume can show their class in the society. For example, the costume of a rich person must be
very beautiful and expensive, and the costume of a poor person must be ragged and cheap. And in the
movie, Tracy s costumes are always beautiful and expensive which show her elegance and richness.
Therefore, the costume changes for female actor is very important because their costumes can always
tell the audience what they are doing

Culture
I think culture, simply is what remains after the various historical cycles. Through each of the
development cycle, people interact with others and developing a new culture. Culture is an objective
phenomenon, an integration of all aspects of life. Even the smallest aspects of life have a culture. It
was suggested that the ongoing world phenomenon of cultural invasion is the result of aggression by
firearm and economic. I disagree with that theory because to me, culture is peace, culture is not
aggression. The integration of cultural aspects is the process of people finding a common language for
a common life. The concept of cultural invasion is the notion of the community who have experienced
only formed in relations, development and the experience of war, especially the Cold War. In the
Western culture homes of Americans, British, French we will see souvenirs from the orient.
Sometimes in Western societies people tend to see the existence of a few souvenirs and ornaments
from the East as a sign of elite or civilized. That is intertwined of life, it is the peaceful coexistence of
the past, and there is also the cultural basis of peaceful coexistence in the future.
Typically, civilization is used to indicate the level of development of physical and human spirit to a

African Countries, Sierra Leon And Ghana
I have chosen to dissect two West African countries, Sierra Leon and Ghana, along with Peru located
in South America and lastly the United States located in North America. Sierra Leon is a British
established colony founded in 1787 for slaves returning to Africa from Great Britain and also the
United States, its primary language is Krio spoken by 97% of citizens. Sierra Leone became an
independent country within the Commonwealth of Nations on April 27 of 1961 and Freetown was
deemed the capital city. Sierra Leone holds a population of 6,453,184 and population density of 89.4
per square kilometer. In spite that this country is very poor it still suffers the consequences of the Civil
war. Yet its mineral, farming and angling assets still ensures potential for monetary future
developments. Earnest Bai Koroma is the current President of Sierra Leon. Earnest Bai Koroma is a
graduate from the oldest University in West Africa, Fourth Bay College class of 1976, born October 2
1953. Sierra Leon Presidential term limit consists of a maximum of 2 five year term limits. Earnest
BK is now serving his 2nd term as of 2007. During Earnest Bai Presidency Sierra Leonean faced
detrimental governmental issues, commanded by the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2014. As the
nation experienced the most exceedingly sicknesses ever. The President was condemned for the
Government slow reaction and for the outrageous measures it took, for example, shutting down the

Gregory And Papacy Essay
When one thinks about the Pope today, there is an image of an elderly man in robes who kisses babies,
makes broad statements about the policies or beliefs of the church, and travels around the world
meeting with the leaders of the world and the church. If one confers with Merriam Webster, the word
pope is defined as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, a definition that falls in line with the
thoughts of many, perhaps even most, people today. For those who are familiar with the history of
western civilization, the papacy is a newer development. The papacy and the Christian church are
tightly aligned with the Roman Empire, but the Empire underwent a variety of changes and no longer
exists, and yet, the Roman Catholic Church and its head are still intact. If the papacy and the church

It was Pope Gregory I, who never sought the papacy, that brought reform and scholarship to the
position. , Gregory held the papacy from 590 until 604. Born into an aristocratic family, Gregory was
well educated. He gave up the life of relative prominence and pursued monasticism. During his time
as monk, Pope Pelagius II appointed him ambassador to the court at Constantinople. Pelagius later
required the help of Gregory and his monks, during a time of rampant flooding and disease, for
various projects throughout Rome, including sanitation, burial and feeding of the poor. , When
Pelagius died, the clergy and people unanimously elected Gregory to the empty see. While unwanted,
Gregory continued the city reformation projects that he began under Pelagius with an admirable zeal.
Pope Gregory the Great, only the second to receive the honorific the Great , not only helped rebuild
the city, but he was also able to negotiate peace with Lombards and was a prolific writer. He was

Crowd Control In Iraq
Additionally, journalists report tear gas related fatalities occurring from time to time. McCoy (2014)
wrote about pyrotechnics in a tear gas canister burning down a house in the United States with dozens
inside, 3 Palestinians in a protest getting killed as a result of concussions or direct inhalation, and 37
political prisoners in Egypt suffocating from the gas while trapped in a vehicle. Physicians for Human
Rights (2012) reported that in Bahrain, where the gas is used frequently to wound, harm, harass, and
intimidate protestors, an asthmatic died from lung failure after repeated exposure. The military or
police often deny that tear gas had any connection to the fatalities whenever they can. To admit the
opposite would inconvenience them with legislative restrictions on their favored method of crowd
control.
Is tear gas effective as a means of crowd control?
Tear gas is objectively effective in immediately dispersing crowds, and that about sums up its
usefulness in crowd control. As can be observed from the news coverage of Ferguson, Bahrain, ...

The indiscriminate nature of the weapon makes even the protestors who are peaceful feel antagonized
by the police, and the physical injuries that result from firing canisters into a crowd, as can be seen in
Figure 2, can provoke retaliation. In Kashmir, a stray canister hit and killed a 14 year old bystander
despite efforts by police to use minimal force, and the people of Kashmir responded by throwing rocks
at the Indian police and their vehicles. According to Stern (2014), every instance of violence in that
region sparked new and more intense protests in which injuries suffered by citizens, police, and
paramilitaries numbered in the hundreds . The worsening reputation of the local police as a result of
their own methods also negatively affects their ability to actually control crowds in their

Natural Resources of Texas Essay example
Natural Resources of Texas
When one thinks of natural resources, probably the first things that come to mind are fossil fuels. If
you bring the state of Texas into the equation, you think of the big oil wells. Texas tea, black gold,
swamp juice, whatever you want to call it, oil is a big part of people s perception of Texan natural
resources. But there are a lot more natural resources in Texas than you might think. The natural soils
make for good farming and ranching conditions, we ve got great rock deposits for a variety of
industrial uses, and we have a number of different mineral deposits scattered through the state. It s
time we took a look at some of the many natural resources Texas has to offer. First up, of course, has

The most important of these is the Permian Basin. In the latter half of the Paleozoic era, sediments
rich in organic matter accumulated here when a shallow sea got cut off from the main oceans and
evaporated off, leaving lots of dead critters and evaporites. These sediments eventually got buried and
compressed, causing the oil and gas to form pockets in permeable rock, surrounded by impermeable
rocks so that they couldn t escape. There the fluid sits until someone pokes a hole (well) into the area
and the contents rush out as the tremendous pressure is released. Other areas of Texas with notable
petroleum sources include East Texas s Woodbine Formation (formed in the Late Cretaceous), much
of the Gulf Coast and the Gulf itself, and various smaller pockets in South and South Central Texas.
Coal may be overshadowed by petroleum in Texas, but it s still here. Pennsylvanian age bituminous
coal was mined in North Central Texas in sizable quantities. Bituminous coal can also be found in
Cretaceous age rocks in near Eagle Pass and in the Trans Pecos region. But the major player in Texas
coal is Lignite, even though it is a lower grade coal. The Texas lignite comes from vegetative material
deposited around 50 million years ago in coastal lagoon type environments, near rivers and their
deltas. The material was buried before it could decay, so it sat there and was buried under more and
more sediments. The enormous

Osteocytes s Role In Bone Homeostasis
Osteocytes are the most abundant cell type in human bones and play a fundamental role in bone
homeostasis. Representing 95% of all mature bone cells and have the longest lifespan in all bone cells,
up to decades, osteocytes are the key to bone integrity1. They are initially derived from osteoblasts,
residing within bones and take part in bone metabolism through excessive communication with other
bone cell populations, including osteoblasts, osteoclasts and most importantly, osteocyte progenitors.
Osteocytes secrete soluble signalling factors that regulate both bone formation and bone dissociation.
Osteocytes have a stellate shape, with cell body of around 15 micrometers. In mature bones,
osteocytes form circular structures termed osteons, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The World Health Organization has defined three types of health systems to describe the degree to
which traditional medicine/complementary and alternative medicine is an officially recognized
element of health care. In an integrative system, TM/CAM [traditional medicine/complementary and

An inclusive system recognizes TM/CAM, but has not yet fully integrated it into all aspects of health

While Western medicine has a strong scientific basis, Traditional Chinese Medicine developed
gradually through China s long history, and is very strongly influenced by Taoist beliefs. For example,
in TCM there are twelve major organs, six yin and six yang . Each of these organs are then associated
with one of the Five Elements, water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. For a Chinese medicinal
practitioner, a disease would be caused by an imbalance of these twelve organs, and would say
something like, too much Fire in the Lungs as a problem of imbalance. Straightforward interactions
between doctor and patient would thus be more common in TCM in order to identify where the
imbalance arose through life choices and the environment. The doctor is not limited to treating only
physical illnesses, but also illnesses of the mind. The symptoms and differentiating the issue would
arise during this step of communication with the patient, which is bolstered by examining the patient s
qi. A fundamental of TCM is qi , which includes Yin and Yang, as qi is believed to be spiritual energy
and is a part of all movement, such like the flow of the cosmos (Kaptchuk). Qi itself can be divided
into many different categories, with Meridian qi being the most important for medicine. TCM views
the body as a collective whole where qi flows through body, with an imbalance of qi leading to the
disease in question. The more fixed or chronic the condition, the more

Taxation of Foreign Corporations Essay
The past 150 years has seen corporations rise and become the main social institution for doing
business in America and across the globe. During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries
America was marked by individually owned family oriented businesses. This framework began to
change with the economic growth in both America and Europe during the period between the Civil
War and World War I. A system once driven by granting charters seen as privileges has evolved into a
complex system beyond the understanding of any one person. This complexity often translates into

It is considered to be one of the most flexible and advanced corporate statues in America (Black). The
second is Delaware s corporation court, the Chancery Court. The specialized Chancery Court of
Delaware handles only business cases and are heard only by judges; no juries (Black). Furthermore,
the court has accumulated precedent since 1792 making its decisions predictable which appeals to
business officials (Vinzant). There are other less tangible qualities about Delaware that can help lure in
businesses, but the laws and the court are the main attractors. The significance of the Delaware
General Corporation Law lies in what are known as holding companies, or shell companies. Delaware

Foreclosure Crisis Essay
The foreclosure crisis that devastated our economy several years ago not only impacted the middle
class wealth but also the upper class wealth. The upper class families who were not prepared for this
crisishad to downsize their primary homes or utilize their investments and savings to keep their
properties. The middle class families were hit the hardest during this crisis with losing there homes,
depleting their life savings and investments. The middle class families who were forced to foreclose
on their homes due to their loss of income and financial security moved into rental apartments or
moved to a family members home to regroup from this crisis. Areas that may have added to
foreclosures or short sales were the lost of many jobs due to a corporation downsizing of their
employees, or the over appraising of a property if the property was appraised higher than the true
value or what a buyer was willing to pay for the property. Homeowners were forced to sale their
property at a lower price if the homeowner was in the process of a divorce, relocating for a job or
foreclosing because they had fallen behind on their mortgage payments.I have seen circumstances
where certain peoplelived above their means by spending more for a home or nonessential items like
luxury vehicles they couldnot actually afford to pay.

Issues in Philippine Education: In Retrospect

corruption, hate, and ignorance. If it really is like many people believe it is, then the study of the key
educational, ergo curricular, issues in the Philippines is a significant endeavor that needs serious pair

According to the IBON Facts and Figures, the literacy rate in the Philippines has regressed a lot over

Attitudes can depend on many cultures, these cultures can differentiate depending on things such as
gender, attitude to the outdoors, individuality, conquest, religion, being urban or rural and drought.
These are only a few of the hundreds of different cultures that can affect attitudes and assumptions

Real world people are more like Batman in the sense that the right thing to do is obvious but
sometimes not. One often judges situations for the best result and sometimes the answer collides with

Mulvey s Argument
Mulvey s argument is grounded in psychoanalytic theory, using the theory as a political weapon to
[demonstrate] the way the unconscious of patriarchal society has structured film form (Mulvey 6). Art,
particularly commercial art such as film, is grounded and shaped by society s conscious and
subconscious views. In addition to the patriarchal views Mulvey discusses in her paper, society also
has ingrained ableist views that shape how people view the world and art. The idea of the castrated
woman is central to Mulvey s argument. She argues that this castrated woman symbolises the
castration threat by her real absence of a penis and stands in patriarchal culture as signifier for the
male other . If the penis represents manhood, then it also must represent the male societal role as
provider and protector. Thus, those that cannot fulfill these roles are also symbolically castrated
regardless of their gender. Although there are many reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The First Reason Is Not Written By An Apostle
In the beginning of the Preface to James from Luther Works, he provides his personal opinion about
the epistle, James. He believes that James is a good book, although not written by an apostle. Luther
makes these claims because of two main reasons. The first reason is It is flatly against St.Paul and all
the rest of Scripture in ascribing justification to works . (Luther, Preface )He explains how James and
St.Paul have a complex differentiation between Abraham and his works. James teaches that Abraham
was justified by his works when he offered his son Isaac (2:20). However, in Romans 4:22 22 St.Paul
states that Abraham was justified apart from works, by his faith alone, before he offers his son. Further
behind the two scriptures, St. Paul provides proof by Moses in Genesis 15:6. This proof can not be
denied by the epistle and sets him in his place without the title as an apostle. Luther s second reason is
It s purpose is to teach Christians, but in all this long teaching it does not once mention the Passion,

Medellin, Colombia Essay
Martin McDonald
English 101
Amy Riddle
April 27, 2005
Medellin was founded in 1616 in the scenic Aburrá valley, but remained small until the coffee boom.
Medellin now has a population of almost 3 million people, with an area of 362 kilometers squared,
and an average temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Medellin is widely regarded in Colombia as a
clean, well organized and economically vibrant community. Its people are hard working and
industrious. Major industries include coffee and flower export, information technology and hotel
services. It is also the fashion capital of Colombia. Each year the Feria de Las Flores (Flower Festival)
attracts visitors from all over South America for parades and conventions. The city s fast and ... Show

However, there is plenty to do and see in the city itself and the scenic surroundings.
There is a lot to Medellin that the international community does not see. Medellin is also home of
Fernando Botero, as well as the annual Flower Festival, a huge event that takes place in the city in late
July and early August. Fernando Botero, the most famous man in the artistic world from Latin
America is from Medellin. Botero s work can be seen scattered throughout the city. A mural decorates
a metro station, and museums have many of his paintings.
The Flower Festival, is also a major attraction in Medellin. It takes place at the end of July and it lasts
until early August. This huge annual event is opened with about 7,000 campesinos parading through
the city on horseback. Groups or individuals may have a theme or motto, such as peace, but other
prefer to linger along the route provoking cheers from the large audience. Others gallop, or dance their
horses decorated in all types of colors and of different sizes for the duration of the parade which goes
on for about eight hours.
I admit I was nervous walking though a city with such an infamous past when I returned there 10
years ago. Although I was born and raised in Medellin, I was still cautious about exploring the city.
Things may be slightly better since Pablo Escobar s death, but it is still not the safest place to be
wondering about. With all the dangerous things going on over

Advantages Of Spanish Colonization In The Philippines
The Philippine were discovered in 1521 by the Spanish. It s the third largest nation that speaks English
in the world. The country is divided into three main areas: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It has 17
regions, 122 cities, and 42,025 barangays. The Philippines were colonized by three countries Spain,
America, and Japan. America colonized the Philippines, because they wanted to become an empire,
and to expand more. They wanted to expand to have more lands, power, resources, more production,
and especially more money. Also the USA didn t want lose the Philippines island to Japan or

cultivation was extended. And the American gradually established the Philippine as an independent
country.
Some bad effects are: lack of equal rights of the Filipinos. lack of freedom of choosing a religion
under the Spanish rule. Some Filipinos acts like they are Americans, rather than love their culture. The
spread of the imported products, and foreign companies in Philippines.
In conclusion, the Spanish colonization was bad for the Philippines, because it took their right, and
changed many thing in the country such as the government. It change the system of it. Spanish made
the Philippines like Saudi Arabia, a family rules the country. It was the Spanish monarchy.
After the Spanish colonization for about 360 years, America came and made the Philippines an

Caribbean Brewers Study Essay
Caribbean Brewers: Transfer Pricing, Ethics and Governance
Case Summary Gera International is a well established international brand of beer that is ranked
amongst the top three brands of beer in the world. With transportation prices rising, Gera International
decided to purchase a plant in Antigua in 2005 and they renamed the subsidiary, Caribbean Brewers,
Inc. (CBI). In 2008, the production facilities of CBI were expanded and their productive capacity
doubled. Furthermore, we are then introduced to Jason Joseph a production manager who is unhappy
and distressed because along with the production doubling, he lost ownership in the company,
bonuses, and annual dividends. JJ comes to us (the financial advisor to the CFO) and informs us ...

Representing costs as a percentage of sales is not the best way to judge efficiency since it can ignore
variables such as bottle deposits and discounted rates, which would show problems in production
when in fact there are not any. Therefore, JJ s statement on production remains truthful when he said
that CBI has been operating as efficiently, if not more, in the past. Here s an example:

Control
JJ has complained on behalf of the performance measurement system because currently his bonus is
based off of production cost being less than 43 percent of sales. JJ believes that the production facility
is operating as efficiently as, if not better, than it has before the expansion. Due to this performance
measurement JJ s ownership when from 25 percent to 8 percent and he is losing bonuses and annual
dividends. As we analyze Figure 2, we have determined from a costs perspective that basing
production manager s bonuses off of a percentage of sales is unethical because he is not being based
off of his performance. For starters, in 2008, CBI expanded and began producing Gera beer, which
unlike other exported beer, does not collect an eight dollar deposit fee. Next, from 2008 to 2009, CBI
was hit with a $6,128,000 bottling

Adaptive Protein Evolution And Antibiotic Resistance
The research presented in Adaptive protein evolution grants organismal fitness by improving catalysis
and flexibility provides an integrated example of how understanding concepts of evolution is essential
in all areas of science. This paper combines biochemical and evolutionary studies to investigate
protein evolution and antibiotic resistance. Evolutionary concepts incorporated in this biochemical
study include, but are not limited to: microevolution, adaption, selection, mutation, epistasis, fitness,
phenotypic plasticity, trade offs, etc. The two major evolutionary themes, mechanisms of evolution
and adaption, are integral parts of the research conducted in this study and must be understood to fully
appreciate the importance of this paper. This research conducted in this study pertains to protein
evolution and antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics are chemicals that kill bacteria by disrupting
biochemical processes. Consequently, they rapidly sort resistant bacteria from susceptible ones. In the
paper, Adaptive protein evolution grants organismal fitness by improving catalysis and flexibility , two
mutations were discovered in metallo ß lactames (MßLs) that result in higher resistance to antibiotics.
It was shown that, mutations acting on the mechanism and the protein flexibility are able to shape the
evolution of MßL mediated antibiotic resistance (1). The evolution of a protein (which is crucial for
organismal adaption and fitness ) relies on the interactions of

Daisy s Idea Of Social Breakdown In The Great Gatsby
He had discovered...made him physically sick. (Fitzgerald CH7). The feeling that George Wilson had
when he saw Daisy with another guy made him realize how much Daisy meant to him and seemed to
be a common feeling within the characters in the story. In this story, many people fell in love with
someone and had all the feelings in the world for them, but the other person either didn t know or may
not feel the same way. This also happens in the real world with many people and many people end up
upset over it because they like the person so much which helps support Fitzgerald s idea of social
breakdown and how the feeling happens in the story and in the real world now and back then. The
modernistic characteristic teaches us that Fitzgerald could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And what s more, I love Daisy...and in my heart I love her all the time. This quote shows that Tom felt
no shame in what he did and takes advantage of Daisy s love for Tom. Tom relates to people in the

cheat on someone and don t think about the decision they ve made. As the story went on and Daisy
found out more and more about the cheating, she got tired of dealing with it and ended up killing
Myrtle which is very ironic because her husband was cheating on her with Myrtle. This is an example
of social breakdown because in society it s wrong to kill somebody. Daisy killed her out of anger and
jealousy which still would never make it right to kill somebody. She should ve left Tom and let him go
on with life with Myrtle. At the beginning of the story, Nick realizes quickly how wrong Tom and
Daisy s marriage is. When Tom has his mistress call him during dinner Jordan is caught by surprise
when Nick did not know about his affair. From this example, it is easy to assume that Tom at this point
in the story became infamous among his colleagues because of his

American Revolution Essay
American Revolution One of the most important facets of any revolution is violence. This is often a
response to the heightened repression or other intolerable demands from the government against its
people. The American Revolution is no exception. Following the Seven Years War, England need to
recover some of their finances which were lost due to the war.
Parliament achieved this by the taxation of the American colonies; the Stamp Act of 1765 is an
example of this. This act resulted in outrage from the Colonies and led to rioting, rhetoric, and the
formation of the Stamp Act Congress. These actions quickly led to the repel of the Stamp Act;
however, there were numerous new taxes levied to take their place. The Americans continued to ...

Like Britain s two loyal colonies; Florida and Quebec. At the time of the Revolutionary War, there
were in actuality fifteen British colonies in America; Florida and Quebec being the two constantly left
out. In 1774 England passed the Quebec Act. This Act made Quebec the fourteenth American colony.
Quebec s loyalty was put to the test within a year of the passing of the Act. The rebelling original
thirteen colonies sent two armies north to capture and utilized the Quebecian territory. Quebec s
militia had just enough warning to organize its garrison against the forces of Benedict Arnold. In
midwinter of 1775 Arnold s attempt to take seige of the garrison was put asunder when he was
wounded by Quebec s militia. By the following Spring the attacking forces retreated and the battles at
Quebec s garrison would be the first and last American Revolution battles fought on Canadian soil.
Unlike Canada, Britain gained control of Florida in 1763 in exchange for Cuba, which was captured
from Spain during the Seven Years War. With British rule looming in the future, most of the Spanish
residence which inhabited Florida left, leaving Florida virtually bare. The British did not take into
account the large populations of Indians and blacks which shared the colony with them. The only two
cities with more than a handful of white residence were Pensacola and St. Augustine. These two cities
would become the heart of the new Floridas .

Conformity In Psychology
Conformity, as defined by Simply Psychology, is a type of social influence involving a change in
belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group . The term conformity is a term that s common place
in the psychology community because of how applicable the idea is to the common person and their
actions. Conformity can be caused by a myriad of different things, some of which being because the
individual desires to either fit in with the majority of the group or because they genuinely feel the
popular within the group is the correct one. Both of these phenomena are known as social normative
and social informative influence respectively. If we go further into detail, social normative influence is
caused by real and imagined group pressure. For example, if one were to stop reading a certain book
series because their classmate viewed it as immature and tacky that would be conformity in response
to real group pressure. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Examples Of Delusion In Don Quixote
Miguel Cervantes Don Quixote is a masterpiece in many senses of the word: at the time of its
conception, it was hailed as a revolutionary work of literature that defined a genre, in later centuries
regarded as an acerbic social commentary, a slightly misshapen romantic tragedy, and even as a
synthesis of existentialist and post modernist features. At the centre of this Spanish satirical chronicle
is the perplexing character Don Quixote. Don Quixote s personality and perspective is rapidly
established fromsince the beginning of the novel, revealing unabashedly to readers that he is mad. The
source of his madness lies in the extent to which Don Quixote acts on his delusions and projections
unto reality as he saunters through Cervantes Andalusia. Don Quixote s delusions have two primary
functions in the novel: demonstrating the reality and tragedy of Cervantes manifestation of idyllic
themes of love and chivalry, and revealing certain characteristics about narration. A role of Don
Quixote s delusions is to provide a glimpse into a situation where the chivalric code is implemented.

Tesco s Success At Tesco Essay
Tesco is one of the most famous stores in the UK with it being our biggest sales retailer earning
billions in profits. The statistics of the supermarket are extremely impressive with over 330,000 staff
employed, being the third largest supermarket, over 16 million Clubcard users in the UK and it being
said that one pound in every seven has been spent at Tesco. All of this used to just be a small stall in
East London when it was created by Jack Cohen in 1919 simply selling groceries making a profit of
just £1 on the first day. Five years later, Cohen purchased a shipment of tea and Tesco became a brand
with its first store opening another five years later, in 1929, in North London. Tesco is now not only
just a grocery store, it also sells petrol (becoming the largest independent petrol retailer in the UK),
insurance, has its own bank, credit cards, loans along with products such as its own clothing line F F,
games consoles, televisions and sports equipment. However, in 2014 Tesco had a shocking downfall
when it had been revealed that they had exaggerated their half year profit forecast by a massive £250
million.
The downfall of Tesco has resulted in their chief executive, Philip Clarke stepping down and their UK
chief executive Chris Bush, UK finance director Carl Rogberg, UK food commercial director John
Scouler and food sourcing director Matt Simister all being suspended after an investigation into how it
had happened. Tesco overstating their profits has affected them

What Is The Difference Between Carnevale And Ham
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical implications of David G. Carnevale and Kay Ham
s publication Going Beyond Human Resource Management Technique found in Chapter 11 of the
Handbook of Human Resource Management in Government. The core theme of Carnevale and Ham s
article is that human resource management (HRM) should be more than just an enforcing or technical
entity. While there remains a need for policies to be written, FMLA paperwork to be processed,
classification studies to be conducted, and a bureaucratic approach that upholds consistent execution
of HR principles, HRM should play a strategic role in an organization s development as well. HRM
that operates strategically focuses on qualitative data, and leaves room for interpretation, whereas
control oriented HR methods follow a scientific, rigid formula. HRM can be conducted in both
manners, and the two paradigms can work symbiotically (Carnevale Ham, 262 263). The human
resource department in Davidson County interacts with DavidsonWorks, a county department and the
local workforce development board, within two HRM paradigms identified by Carnevale and Ham
(265) as the bureaucratic side and the interpretive zone. The bureaucratic side of the HR house
assumes a more traditional HR function. In this role, the HR staff assists with workers compensation
claims, employee grievances, and other standard employee/employer relation issues. When
DavidsonWorks is actively hiring, the human

Rachel Carson s Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United States
When Rachel Carson s Silent Spring was published in 1962, it generated a storm of controversy over
the use of chemical pesticides. Miss Carson s intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public of
the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies
documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with
these facts, she explains how in many instances the pesticides have done more harm than good in
eradicating the pests they were designed to destroy. In addition to her reports on pesticide use, Miss
Carson points out that many of the long term effects that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Impact of Silent Spring
When excerpts of Silent Spring first began appearing in The New Yorker magazine in June 1962, they
caused an uproar and brought a howl of indignation from the chemical industry. Supporters of the
pesticide industry argued that her book gave an incomplete picture because it did not say anything
about the benefits of using pesticides. An executive of the American Cyanamid Company complained,
if man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the Dark Ages, and
the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth. Chemical manufacturers began
undertaking a more aggressive public relations campaign to educate the public on the benefits of
pesticide use. Monsanto, for example, published and distributed 5,000 copies of a brochure parodying
Silent Spring entitled The Desolate Year, which explained how chemical pesticides were largely
responsible for the virtual eradication of diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, sleeping sickness, and
typhus in the United States and throughout the world, and that without the assistance of pesticides in
agricultural production millions around the world would suffer from malnutrition or starve to death
(NRDC 1997).
One of the main counterarguments to Miss Carson s book expressed by the farmers, scientists, and
other supporters of the pesticide industry was that farm yields would be drastically reduced without

Essay On David Attenborough
~ Intro
I am sure all of you have heard of David Attenborough, or at least recognize his very familiar voice.
Although David did not get famous for biological discoveries, but by the many documentaries he has
made. He has made a lot of documentaries with several facts about many different things including
dinosaur fossil discoveries, sea animals and plants, and a lot of the many species of plants and animals
that live on this beautiful earth.
~ Early life
On May 8, 1926, in Isleworth, United Kingdom, David Frederick Attenborough was born into a family
of 7. His mother s name was Mary and his father s name was Frederick. They got married in 1922.
Frederick Attenborough was the principal of the University of Leicester and was also the author of
The Laws of the Earliest English Kings and Laws of the Earliest English Kings Scholar s Choice
Edition . David has 4 siblings, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters. His siblings names were Richard
Attenborough, John Attenborough, Irene Bejach, and Helga Bejach. His older brother, Richard

so many facts about wildlife through his documentaries and shows. He changed the way Animal
Planet works entirely by bringing the cameras out to the animal s habitat and showing how they really
act out in the wild instead of one that grew up in captivity. He has educated so many people across the
world about wildlife, which I really think that it is important to at least know a little bit about it. I

The Conflict Of Syrian Refugees, Hosting Countries And...
What do you want to be when you grow up? is the question that many children answer with
aspirations of hope and achievement. For 11 year old Hamsa the answer was a doctor but instead
living out his dream, his reality is hearing that his school was bombed just before his arrival to a
refugee camp in Jordan (UNHCR). Hamsa and other children make up 3 quarters out of the 7.5
million Syrians that have been internally displaced or become refugees due to the country s current
conflict (Jones and Shaheen). Although we can never fully fathom the obstacles and position of loss
faced by so many Syrians, we can try to better understand one of the worst humanitarian disasters of
our time. By recognizing the damaging results of Syria s civil war creating we can try to understand
numerous challenges for Syrian refugees, hosting countries and international organizations trying to
aid the effort. Migration According to Stalker there are two theories of migration: individual, where
one weighs the options in a strategic way such as provide economic advance and structural, where one
is forced to move due political, economic or social situations beyond their control (23). Syrians fall
under the structural approach where factors of conflict, violence and human right abuses push them
away from their country. Through increased violence and lack of human security, forced migration has
left many to be refugees and or internally displaced persons (IDPs) (Castles and Miller 56). The

Comparing The Law Of Attraction And The Lottery
The Law of Attraction and the Lottery
The Law of Attraction states that whatever energy you have and exert it will attract another energy
that is at the same vibrational frequency it is. Everything physical and nonphysical has energy, so this
means that you can attract almost anything into your life. If you intently focus on certain things,
eventually you ll get it and everything that comes with it. It s sort like magnetism. If you focus on bad
things you will get more bad things. However, if were you focus on good things you would get good
things. But once you put the thought of I want this. and I ll do anything to get this. in your mind, there
is nothing that can stop you except the limitations you put on yourself. Once you implant the thoughts
of receiving something, you will get it. Your entire being will start acting in ways and doing stuff that
will support what you want. The most important thing about the Law of Attraction is that you have to

some people. You can t make jokes about the Law of Attraction, you have to take this concept very
seriously in order for it to work. Joking around or being skeptical about it will dismiss everything.
People are very believable when it comes to spiritual concepts such as angels and demons. So why is
manifesting the lottery so far fetched? Just because it hasn t worked for you doesn t mean it won t
happen. You have to believe in your heart and soul that you re going to win, and you will. When that

Student Lo 7 Students Loan
7 student loan myths debunked
When it comes to student loans, there is a lot of information to take in especially for a new college
student who is exploring their financing options for the first time, or a new graduate who has just
started paying off their student loan debt. With all of the different information out there, it can be easy
to get confused, and perhaps even misunderstand certain things about student loans. The following are
some common student loan myths, debunked:
Myth #1: I m not worried about my student loan debt, because I can just have some or all of my debt
forgiven
Fact: It s not easy to qualify for student loan forgiveness. The criteria can be rather strict, and you
usually have to be working in a specific industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You can usually get your payments adjusted and lowered based on your income, so if you haven t
exactly reached the salary you were hoping for post graduation, don t fret. You may also be able to
temporarily defer payments as well. However, you ll want to consider the disadvantage of not opting
for a standard repayment schedule. You are essentially lengthening your loan by delaying the
inevitable, which means you ll pay more interest in the end.
Myth #3: I can discharge my student loan debt through bankruptcy if I ever really need to
Fact: Not all debts can be discharged through bankruptcy, and typically, student loan debt falls into
that category. That doesn t mean it s impossible, but isn t as easy as discharging other types of debt,
and you may not be eligible. As such, it s important to not just assume that bankruptcy can be an
automatic solution for any student loan debt troubles.
Myth #4: I probably don t qualify for financial aid, so I should just take out student loans
Fact: Not necessarily. Many students qualify for some level of funding, and unlike student loans,
financial aid usually doesn t need to be paid back (there are some exceptions to this for example, if
you fail a class). It doesn t cost anything to just apply and see what you re eligible for. Even if you don
t receive enough financial aid to avoid student loans completely, every little bit helps, and that s less
you ll need to borrow.
Myth #5: I ll be required to borrow far more

  • 2. Essay on Concord Bookstore Concord Bookstore University of Phoenix Creating Change within Organizations HCS587 David Harrell 16 January, 2012 * The Concord Bookshop is a small town bookstore with a 64 year history and a cultural appeal enjoyed by the citizens of the town. In recent years the economic environment created fierce competition for the bookstore, coupled with a need for innovative technology meant a need for restructuring. The financial status of the bookshop was in grave distress. Fearing financial ruin the board members made a unanimous decision to implement significant changes. However, the board did not take the necessary steps of including the appropriate stakeholders in the change process and obtaining employee support. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Behaviour Change Change can be successful if a company or group within the organization changes the way an individual presents oneself (Spector, 2010). Behavior change is based on how an individual works within the environment. The employees of Concord Bookshop were not consulted therefore did not have an opportunity to verbalize their concerns or provide input to assist the company to move the bookstore in a new direction. The management team was aware of the financial distress and was willing to participate in any financial changes required. The employees of the bookstore had an abundance of knowledge and experience that may have contributed to ending financial turmoil (Schein, 2011). Open dialogue between the employees and owners may have facilitated the development and collaboration of new ideas in a competitive environment. The new strategies could have provided a new direction for the bookstore. According to Burnes, in discussing Kurt Lewin s Change Model, for change to be effective within a group there has to be a collective approach by each member of the group (2004). Conclusion The Concord Bookshop was a well respected historical bookstore facing financial challenges. While the bookstore employed knowledgeable and dedicated employees, the owners and board members did not engage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tough Guise 2 Rationale For my written task 1, I will write a satirical article describing a fraternity at a US university. The subject matter will be mainly about masculinity, and how it would look if the ideal traits of a masculine person were changed. I will be working with Part One of the English HL course, specifically under the topic of language and gender. The text that I will be working with will be the documentary that we watched, Tough Guise 2 . The task is meant to explore masculinity through the lens of Learning Outcome 1.2, which is Analyze the impact of language changes .To do this, I am going to change the language and ideas that are generally perpetuated from American University Fraternity culture from chauvinistic and sexually aggressive to feminist and respectful. The reason that I chose a satire is because I think that some ideas that Fraternities push on to their members and the public about what it means to be a real man are ridiculous. The text type that is most conducive to attacking ridiculous and unbelievable ideas is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason that this Fraternity sticks out so far from the rest is because they skip the traditional fraternal activities such as charity and Community outreach and instead teach men what they re recalling going to need to live a fulfilling life. Each chapter makes sure to only exemplify the highest level of masculinity, with activities including mass sexual assault, alcohol poisoning, and even team building activities like Cocaine trafficking to really prepare them for the workforce. While some may argue that these activities are not as beneficial to man s future as the altruistic acts that many run of the mill fraternities execute, SAE would have to disagree, saying that they do real manly things and that those who do good for their communities are just whiny, pushover babies and not nearly as much of men as those in the SAE ... • 4. The Philadelphia Story Essay There is no doubt that The Philadelphia Story is one of the best American romantic comedy file in 1904. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart are protagonist in this film, but Katherine Hepburn s acting make me so impressive. After finishing watching this film, I fall in love with this wonderful story not just because Katharine Hepburn is a beautiful as well as elegant lady, but lots of plots of this film are thoughtful and interesting. The most important event in The Philadelphia Story is the second wedding for a lady, Tracy, who is born in a rich family in Philadelphia. Since Dexter, who is Tracy s first husband, cannot match her standards, she gets divorce with him in the end. Two years after her divorce, she is going to get married again. What s more, her fiancé is a very famous person; therefore, one of the most well known magazine wants to report Tracy s second wedding. In order to help a photographer and a journalist join the wedding, Dexter asks them to pretend to be friends of Tracy s brother. However, it cannot escape Tracy s eyes, and she finds out their trick quickly after she sees them. Unfortunately, even though she knows they are not she brother s friend, she cannot say anything about that and neither her family can because the magazine has evident to show that her father has affair with a lady dancer. • 5. Communication And Conflict Resolution For Criminal Justice Brandman University Communication and Conflict Resolution for Criminal Justice CJCU 432 RESEARCH EXERCISE 2 CULTURE Professor Peter Jaske November 29, 2015 Phuong Le Culture I think culture, simply is what remains after the various historical cycles. Through each of the development cycle, people interact with others and developing a new culture. Culture is an objective phenomenon, an integration of all aspects of life. Even the smallest aspects of life have a culture. It was suggested that the ongoing world phenomenon of cultural invasion is the result of aggression by firearm and economic. I disagree with that theory because to me, culture is peace, culture is not aggression. The integration of cultural aspects is the process of people finding a common language for a common life. The concept of cultural invasion is the notion of the community who have experienced only formed in relations, development and the experience of war, especially the Cold War. In the Western culture homes of Americans, British, French we will see souvenirs from the orient. Sometimes in Western societies people tend to see the existence of a few souvenirs and ornaments from the East as a sign of elite or civilized. That is intertwined of life, it is the peaceful coexistence of the past, and there is also the cultural basis of peaceful coexistence in the future. Typically, civilization is used to indicate the level of development of physical and human spirit to a certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Gregory And Papacy Essay When one thinks about the Pope today, there is an image of an elderly man in robes who kisses babies, makes broad statements about the policies or beliefs of the church, and travels around the world meeting with the leaders of the world and the church. If one confers with Merriam Webster, the word pope is defined as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, a definition that falls in line with the thoughts of many, perhaps even most, people today. For those who are familiar with the history of western civilization, the papacy is a newer development. The papacy and the Christian church are tightly aligned with the Roman Empire, but the Empire underwent a variety of changes and no longer exists, and yet, the Roman Catholic Church and its head are still intact. If the papacy and the church are newer developments in the grand scheme of western ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was Pope Gregory I, who never sought the papacy, that brought reform and scholarship to the position. , Gregory held the papacy from 590 until 604. Born into an aristocratic family, Gregory was well educated. He gave up the life of relative prominence and pursued monasticism. During his time as monk, Pope Pelagius II appointed him ambassador to the court at Constantinople. Pelagius later required the help of Gregory and his monks, during a time of rampant flooding and disease, for various projects throughout Rome, including sanitation, burial and feeding of the poor. , When Pelagius died, the clergy and people unanimously elected Gregory to the empty see. While unwanted, Gregory continued the city reformation projects that he began under Pelagius with an admirable zeal. Pope Gregory the Great, only the second to receive the honorific the Great , not only helped rebuild the city, but he was also able to negotiate peace with Lombards and was a prolific writer. • 8. Crowd Control In Iraq Additionally, journalists report tear gas related fatalities occurring from time to time. McCoy (2014) wrote about pyrotechnics in a tear gas canister burning down a house in the United States with dozens inside, 3 Palestinians in a protest getting killed as a result of concussions or direct inhalation, and 37 political prisoners in Egypt suffocating from the gas while trapped in a vehicle. Physicians for Human Rights (2012) reported that in Bahrain, where the gas is used frequently to wound, harm, harass, and intimidate protestors, an asthmatic died from lung failure after repeated exposure. The military or police often deny that tear gas had any connection to the fatalities whenever they can. To admit the opposite would inconvenience them with legislative restrictions on their favored method of crowd control. Is tear gas effective as a means of crowd control? Tear gas is objectively effective in immediately dispersing crowds, and that about sums up its usefulness in crowd control. As can be observed from the news coverage of Ferguson, Bahrain, ... According to Stern (2014), every instance of violence in that region sparked new and more intense protests in which injuries suffered by citizens, police, and paramilitaries numbered in the hundreds . If you bring the state of Texas into the equation, you think of the big oil wells. Texas tea, black gold, swamp juice, whatever you want to call it, oil is a big part of people s perception of Texan natural resources. But there are a lot more natural resources in Texas than you might think. The natural soils make for good farming and ranching conditions, we ve got great rock deposits for a variety of industrial uses, and we have a number of different mineral deposits scattered through the state. It s time we took a look at some of the many natural resources Texas has to offer. First up, of course, has to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most important of these is the Permian Basin. In the latter half of the Paleozoic era, sediments rich in organic matter accumulated here when a shallow sea got cut off from the main oceans and evaporated off, leaving lots of dead critters and evaporites. These sediments eventually got buried and compressed, causing the oil and gas to form pockets in permeable rock, surrounded by impermeable rocks so that they couldn t escape. There the fluid sits until someone pokes a hole (well) into the area and the contents rush out as the tremendous pressure is released. Other areas of Texas with notable petroleum sources include East Texas s Woodbine Formation (formed in the Late Cretaceous), much of the Gulf Coast and the Gulf itself, and various smaller pockets in South and South Central Texas. Coal may be overshadowed by petroleum in Texas, but it s still here. Pennsylvanian age bituminous coal was mined in North Central Texas in sizable quantities. Bituminous coal can also be found in Cretaceous age rocks in near Eagle Pass and in the Trans Pecos region. But the major player in Texas coal is Lignite, even though it is a lower grade coal. The Texas lignite comes from vegetative material deposited around 50 million years ago in coastal lagoon type environments, near rivers and their deltas. Representing 95% of all mature bone cells and have the longest lifespan in all bone cells, up to decades, osteocytes are the key to bone integrity1. They are initially derived from osteoblasts, residing within bones and take part in bone metabolism through excessive communication with other bone cell populations, including osteoblasts, osteoclasts and most importantly, osteocyte progenitors. Osteocytes secrete soluble signalling factors that regulate both bone formation and bone dissociation. Osteocytes have a stellate shape, with cell body of around 15 micrometers. While Western medicine has a strong scientific basis, Traditional Chinese Medicine developed gradually through China s long history, and is very strongly influenced by Taoist beliefs. For example, in TCM there are twelve major organs, six yin and six yang . Each of these organs are then associated with one of the Five Elements, water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. For a Chinese medicinal practitioner, a disease would be caused by an imbalance of these twelve organs, and would say something like, too much Fire in the Lungs as a problem of imbalance. Straightforward interactions between doctor and patient would thus be more common in TCM in order to identify where the imbalance arose through life choices and the environment. The doctor is not limited to treating only physical illnesses, but also illnesses of the mind. The symptoms and differentiating the issue would arise during this step of communication with the patient, which is bolstered by examining the patient s qi. A fundamental of TCM is qi , which includes Yin and Yang, as qi is believed to be spiritual energy and is a part of all movement, such like the flow of the cosmos (Kaptchuk). Qi itself can be divided into many different categories, with Meridian qi being the most important for medicine. He believes that James is a good book, although not written by an apostle. Luther makes these claims because of two main reasons. The first reason is It is flatly against St.Paul and all the rest of Scripture in ascribing justification to works . (Luther, Preface )He explains how James and St.Paul have a complex differentiation between Abraham and his works. James teaches that Abraham was justified by his works when he offered his son Isaac (2:20). However, in Romans 4:22 22 St.Paul states that Abraham was justified apart from works, by his faith alone, before he offers his son. Further behind the two scriptures, St. Paul provides proof by Moses in Genesis 15:6. This proof can not be denied by the epistle and sets him in his place without the title as an apostle. Luther s second reason is It s purpose is to teach Christians, but in all this long teaching it does not once mention the Passion, the Resurrection, or the Spirit of Christ. (Luther, Preface )James was known for spreading the word of God, although this good work was not approved of Luther. Carnevale and Kay Ham s publication Going Beyond Human Resource Management Technique found in Chapter 11 of the Handbook of Human Resource Management in Government. The core theme of Carnevale and Ham s article is that human resource management (HRM) should be more than just an enforcing or technical entity. While there remains a need for policies to be written, FMLA paperwork to be processed, classification studies to be conducted, and a bureaucratic approach that upholds consistent execution of HR principles, HRM should play a strategic role in an organization s development as well. HRM that operates strategically focuses on qualitative data, and leaves room for interpretation, whereas control oriented HR methods follow a scientific, rigid formula. HRM can be conducted in both manners, and the two paradigms can work symbiotically (Carnevale Ham, 262 263). The human resource department in Davidson County interacts with DavidsonWorks, a county department and the local workforce development board, within two HRM paradigms identified by Carnevale and Ham (265) as the bureaucratic side and the interpretive zone. The bureaucratic side of the HR house assumes a more traditional HR function. In this role, the HR staff assists with workers compensation claims, employee grievances, and other standard employee/employer relation issues. When DavidsonWorks is actively hiring, the human ... • 33. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the Beginning of the... Rachel Carson s Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United States When Rachel Carson s Silent Spring was published in 1962, it generated a storm of controversy over the use of chemical pesticides. Miss Carson s intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public of the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with these facts, she explains how in many instances the pesticides have done more harm than good in eradicating the pests they were designed to destroy. In addition to her reports on pesticide use, Miss Carson points out that many of the long term effects that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Impact of Silent Spring When excerpts of Silent Spring first began appearing in The New Yorker magazine in June 1962, they caused an uproar and brought a howl of indignation from the chemical industry. Supporters of the pesticide industry argued that her book gave an incomplete picture because it did not say anything about the benefits of using pesticides. An executive of the American Cyanamid Company complained, if man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the Dark Ages, and the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth. Chemical manufacturers began undertaking a more aggressive public relations campaign to educate the public on the benefits of pesticide use. Monsanto, for example, published and distributed 5,000 copies of a brochure parodying Silent Spring entitled The Desolate Year, which explained how chemical pesticides were largely responsible for the virtual eradication of diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, sleeping sickness, and typhus in the United States and throughout the world, and that without the assistance of pesticides in agricultural production millions around the world would suffer from malnutrition or starve to death (NRDC 1997). One of the main counterarguments to Miss Carson s book expressed by the farmers, scientists, and other supporters of the pesticide industry was that farm yields would be drastically reduced without the assistance ... • 35. The Conflict Of Syrian Refugees, Hosting Countries And... What do you want to be when you grow up? is the question that many children answer with aspirations of hope and achievement. For 11 year old Hamsa the answer was a doctor but instead living out his dream, his reality is hearing that his school was bombed just before his arrival to a refugee camp in Jordan (UNHCR). Hamsa and other children make up 3 quarters out of the 7.5 million Syrians that have been internally displaced or become refugees due to the country s current conflict (Jones and Shaheen). Although we can never fully fathom the obstacles and position of loss faced by so many Syrians, we can try to better understand one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time. By recognizing the damaging results of Syria s civil war creating we can try to understand numerous challenges for Syrian refugees, hosting countries and international organizations trying to aid the effort. Migration According to Stalker there are two theories of migration: individual, where one weighs the options in a strategic way such as provide economic advance and structural, where one is forced to move due political, economic or social situations beyond their control (23). Syrians fall under the structural approach where factors of conflict, violence and human right abuses push them away from their country. • 36. Comparing The Law Of Attraction And The Lottery The Law of Attraction and the Lottery The Law of Attraction states that whatever energy you have and exert it will attract another energy that is at the same vibrational frequency it is. Everything physical and nonphysical has energy, so this means that you can attract almost anything into your life. If you intently focus on certain things, eventually you ll get it and everything that comes with it. It s sort like magnetism. If you focus on bad things you will get more bad things. However, if were you focus on good things you would get good things. But once you put the thought of I want this. and I ll do anything to get this. in your mind, there is nothing that can stop you except the limitations you put on yourself. Once you implant the thoughts of receiving something, you will get it. Your entire being will start acting in ways and doing stuff that will support what you want. The most important thing about the Law of Attraction is that you have to intently and constantly focus on positivity in order to manifest your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to win the lottery, you have to be serious about it. I remember seeing Cynthia Stafford on a news channel explaining her visualization exercises that help her to win, and the news anchor was making jokes about it. I was thinking to myself this is why the Law of Attraction doesn t work for some people. You can t make jokes about the Law of Attraction, you have to take this concept very seriously in order for it to work. Joking around or being skeptical about it will dismiss everything. People are very believable when it comes to spiritual concepts such as angels and demons. So why is manifesting the lottery so far fetched? Just because it hasn t worked for you doesn t mean it won t happen. You have to believe in your heart and soul that you re going to win, and you will. When that happens, nothing can stop ... With all of the different information out there, it can be easy to get confused, and perhaps even misunderstand certain things about student loans. The following are some common student loan myths, debunked: Myth #1: I m not worried about my student loan debt, because I can just have some or all of my debt forgiven Fact: It s not easy to qualify for student loan forgiveness. You can usually get your payments adjusted and lowered based on your income, so if you haven t exactly reached the salary you were hoping for post graduation, don t fret. You may also be able to temporarily defer payments as well. However, you ll want to consider the disadvantage of not opting for a standard repayment schedule. You are essentially lengthening your loan by delaying the inevitable, which means you ll pay more interest in the end. Myth #3: I can discharge my student loan debt through bankruptcy if I ever really need to Fact: Not all debts can be discharged through bankruptcy, and typically, student loan debt falls into that category. That doesn t mean it s impossible, but isn t as easy as discharging other types of debt, and you may not be eligible. As such, it s important to not just assume that bankruptcy can be an automatic solution for any student loan debt troubles. Myth #4: I probably don t qualify for financial aid, so I should just take out student loans Fact: Not necessarily. Many students qualify for some level of funding, and unlike student loans, financial aid usually doesn t need to be paid back (there are some exceptions to this for example, if you fail a class). It doesn t cost anything to just apply and see what you re eligible for. Even if you don t receive enough financial aid to avoid student loans completely, every little bit helps, and that s less you ll need to borrow. Myth #5: I ll be required to borrow far more ...
