As stated by Wang et al. (2006, p. 160) ... environmental accidents, complaints, and concerns have
pressured industries to shift from the traditions end of pipe approaches to sound pollution prevention
strategies . Interface are reducing their smoke stacks. End of pipe solutions are no longer accepted as a
means of reducing pollution and remaining sustainable in the 21st Century (Waage 2003, p. 23). This
has resulted in Interface reducing their 292 smoke stacks to 183. This is a 39% reduction in smoke
stacks from their operations. A reduction in smoke stacks equals a reduction in pollutants and waste
entering the earths atmosphere. As stated by Wang et al. (2006, p. 160) Pollution represents a loss in
profits during manufacturing . By Interface reducing their pollution through smoke stack
minimisation, they will see a return in increased profits. Further looking into the aspect of reducing
emissions, Interface has acknowledged that to prevent toxic emissions altogether we must go upstream
and prevent those toxic substances from entering our factories in the first place. What comes in will go
out as a product, waste or emission (Waage 2003, p. 23.). To sum this statement, prevention is better
than cure. By following a process of assessing what products come into a manufacturing process and

New Technology Commercial Aviation General Electric GE 90XE Engines In March 2015, GE
Aviation was granted the first FAA certification for a 3 D printed part to be installed in a jet engine.
According to GE Aviation, the part is a T25 housing for a compressor inlet temperature sensor and
will be retrofitted on over 400 of its GE90 94B engines. The part was designed using a CAD program
and a rapid prototype was made of metal alloy using an SLS process. The final design was approved,
the prototype was printed and tested, and the part was certified by the FAA in a 6 month period.
Normally, this process would take several years with traditional manufacturing methods. What is
unique about this part is that it is printed as one integral piece that contains internal cooling structures,
making it less likely to coke (build up carbon during use) and overheat. According to GE Aviation, it
is also 25% lighter and 5 times more durable than the previous compressor inlet temperature sensor
that it is replacing. It is printed as one solid piece while the old part is made of 18 pieces fitted
together (Radis, 2015). What really makes AM technology appealing to manufacturers like GE
Aviation is the ability to design parts without being limited by traditional manufacturing methods. The
CAD computer allows the engineers to design with intent and embed cooling structures or lubrication
