Examples Of Conflict In Rules Of The Game By Amy Tan
Within the text Rules of the Game written by Amy Tan, the clash of Chinese beliefs and values with
those of American beliefs and values can be seen. This clash of values and beliefs between two culture
causes many mother daughter conflicts throughout the story. Waverly grew up in San Francisco in a
Chinese American neighborhood while her mother was a first generation immigrant. This difference in
their surroundings has caused their beliefs and values to differ from each other. Due to the clashing of
Chinese and American cultures, there are multiple incidents of conflict between MeiMei and her
mother. A key example of such an incident is when MeiMei is forced to accompany her mother to the
Saturday market. According to the text, MeiMei s mother would proudly walk with MeiMei and tell
everyone who looked towards them that MeiMei was her daughter. MeiMei then told her mom if she
could stop telling everyone who looked their way that MeiMei was her daughter. Her mother
misunderstood what MeiMei said, thinking that MeiMei was ashamed of walking with her. This then
caused MeiMei to tell her mother, If you want to show me off, then why don t you learn to play chess.
When MeiMei had realized that what she said was wrong, she ran away from her mother. To MeiMei,
her mother going around and telling everyone that MeiMei was her daughter was embarrassing
because she didn t want her mom to use her as a source to gain popularity. In MeiMei s beliefs, her
chess victories were her own accomplishments, one she should be the only one to use since she feels
as though she gained them on her own. Her mother on the other hand, sees MeiMei s achievements as
a victory for the whole family and is proud of her daughter. MeiMei misunderstands this, thinking her
mother was just crediting herself for MeiMei s work and so runs off. This clash in values caused this
incident. MeiMei s escape from her mother leads to a new conflict of MeiMei running away from her
mom. It is stated in the text that MeiMei ran through the alleyways until she realized that she was
running from nothing. After two hours, MeiMei returned home and her mother said, We not
concerning this girl. This girl not have concerning for us. From this it can be

Social Classes In The Leopard
A major part of society, ranging from the beginning of time until present day, has been the aspect of
social classes and the distinguishing features between the different levels. In Giuseppe Di Lampedusa
s novel The Leopard, through the use of different characters to symbolize the different social classes
and the relationships between them, the author successfully distinguished and defined the different
groups in nineteenth century Italian society. A special spotlight is shown on the aristocracy as that is
the class the main character, Prince Fabrizio, belongs to. It is seen through the novel quite clearly the
distinction between the different social classes ,the relationships between them, and why characters in
the different classes behave as they do. The characters in this book that are members of the aristocracy
are also a part of the royal, or now ex royal, Salinas family. Prince Fabrizio and his wife Princess
Stella were born into this life of luxury. They even brought in a few children, Concetta and Paolo.
Prince Fabrizio is an extremely dynamic character. He is used to being rich just because he was born
rich and is not interested in working hard for what he has. He was presented with a job to work for the
new Italian government but turned it down and recommended Don Calogero because of what seemed
to be a lack of motivation to actually have to work in order to earn money. Fabrizio is described to be
quick tempered and that is proven when he gets upset in the garden

Philadelphia Chromosome And Leukemia Essay
Essay 88: The Philadelphia Chromosome and Leukemia The so called Philadelphia chromosome is an
abnormal chromosomal structure present in most cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and
to a lesser extent in other types of leukemia, most notably acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The
origin of the term Philadelphia chromosome simply reflects the fact that a research team first
identified this abnormality in a blood sample from a leukemia patient in Philadelphia, PA.
CML vs. Acute Leukemias Unlike acute forms of leukemia, in which the cardinal manifestations
(fever, weight loss, and fatigue) appear abruptly, patients with CML may be asymptomatic for months
or even years prior to diagnosis. Even after diagnosis, many patients with chronic forms of leukemia
survive 5 10 years or longer. In approximately 90% of CML patients an abnormal structure known as
the Philadelphia chromosome results from an event known as a chromosomal translocation. ... Show

In CML, a chromosomal translocation occurs between chromosomes 9 and 22. Geneticists abbreviate
this event t9:22. The result of this t9:22 translocation is the juxtaposition of the c abl tyrosine kinase
gene on chromosome 9 with the bcr (breakpoint cluster region) on chromosome 22. The product is an
abnormal fusion gene that encodes a constitutively active tyrosine kinase called bcr abl. The bcr abl
protein is a perpetually active version of a cell proliferation signal. The normal versions of these
intracellular tyrosine kinases are generally inactivated unless the cell is responding to growth factors
or cytokines that promote cell proliferation. The bcr abl protein is a different story. It acts like a
broken record, continuously telling the cell to copy its DNA and undergo cell division. Consequently,
lymphocytes that undergo the t9:22 translocation begin to proliferate out of

The Massacre And Abu Ghraib Torture Prison
The My Lai massacre and the Abu Ghraib torture prison were both tragic events in history that
Americans were involved in. The My Lai massacre took place during the Vietnam war in 1968.
Lieutenant William Calley ordered the Charlie Company to proceed with the attack on the village of
My Lai. Their goal was to exterminate the Viet Cong combatants and any one who stood in their way,
but they ended up killing hundreds of innocent unarmed civilians instead. The Abu Ghraib torture and
prison was an american military run prison that was active during the Iraqi war in 2003 until 2006.
They captured Iraqi soldiers and tortured them in extremely inhumane and unimaginable ways. These
horrific occurrences made an impact on a countless amount of communities and people s lives around
the world whether they had connections to the incidents or not, which is why this issue is such an
important matter to discuss. The concepts that will be discussed in this essay are the similarities
between the events of the My Lai massacre and Abu Ghraib prison, the major difference between the
two, considering who was truly responsible for the events at the Abu Ghraib prison, discussing
whether or not the lessons of My Lai were learnt, and the steps to take to insure nothing alike these
events would ever take place in the world again. There are several similarities that are comparable
between the My Lai Massacre and the Abu Ghraib prison torture. Both incidents were extremely
devastating events that

Cardiovascular, Respiratory And Energy System
D1 outline the relationships between the cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems before, during
and after a sporting activity
Scenario: Mo Farah 5km Run Cardiovascular system changes Respiratory system changes Use of the
three energy systems
Before race Before the race the cardiovascular system stays the same as there is no physical activity
going on. The heart rate is the same. An averages person s heart rate can range from sixty to one
hundred beats per minute, Mo Farah s heart rate is thirty three beats per minute. His heart rate may
start to rise due to being nervous or due to anticipation. There is no change to the respiratory system
before the race. Breathing may become deeper as the nerves may come. Before the race the energy ...

He will start to sweat as he is running at his full potential. The heart will start to work harder and will
deliver oxygenated blood to the muscles via arteries, capillaries and the veins. The blood is received
from the body and it goes into the right atrium and here the blood is filtered and is passed on to the
right ventricle. The blood then goes to the lungs where the deoxygenated blood becomes oxygenated.
The blood then goes back to the heart by the left atrium and it then goes into the left ventricle, the left
ventricle will give a bigger contraction as it is going to the body. This system is repeated many times.
The arteries and veins become bigger so more blood can pass through. Stroke volume and cardiac
output will increase. Stroke volume will increase by 170ml. cardiac output will increase by 35L.
During the race the respiratory system is working hard to deliver oxygenated blood to the muscles.
Gaseous exchange takes place and becomes faster as it is more common during exercise. This will
allow more oxygen into the blood stream which will get to the muscles quicker. The inspiration
movement becomes harder and faster and this allows more oxygen to be breathed in. Expiration
becomes quick during physical activity. The nasal cavity will increase the temperature of the air that is
being inhaled and it will filter it to make sure that there is no dust. During the race Mo Farah uses the
aerobic system because he is a long distance runner. As the race goes on he will start to use the energy
that is stored in his muscles form the food that he has eaten. His heart rate and breathing rate start to
speed up to deliver more oxygen to the muscles and get rid of carbon dioxide. The body will rely on
this oxygen until the last part of the race where Mo will start to pick up the pace to either overtake
someone or get a faster time. During this sprint he will use the

Our Time Wideman Summary
Do you have any idea how draining it is to be black in America? Rich or poor, educated or
uneducated, famous or anonymous? Do you know what it feels like to be classified as ghetto and lazy
because you come from or live in the hood? Better yet have you ever been called white washed
because you seek a higher education, and are able to actually hold a conversation without saying the
word umm in every other sentence? Do you have any idea? I do. Not everyone is a direct result of
their environment and bad choices. In the essay Our Time Wideman questions the idea of black life in
America and uses both he and his brother s story to explain how the choices we make in life are not
always easy, and how sometimes others may not always understand the reasons behind them.
Throughout the essay he uses the voices of his brother Robby, His mother, and Himself to express and
convey the different perspectives through Robby s eyes. Widemen has to look past his own views ...

Throughout Our Time there are several examples in which the voices of the different characters
change. Widemen frequently interrupts this narrative to talk about the problems he is having as a
writer. The hardest habit to break, since it was the habit of a lifetime, would be listening to myself
listen to him. That habit would destroy any chance of seeing my brother on his terms; and seeing him
in his terms, learning his terms, seemed the whole point of learning his story. (p. 437) He also praises
his mother s remarkable capacity for she says is trying on the other person s point of view. He talks
about Robby and how different memories of him confirm some of his actions, won t take me no time

Mmr Vaccine And The Vaccine
Vaccines; a more than spectacular development of science which has prevented countless numbers of
diseases by giving one s body an immunity to a microorganism by stimulating the body s immune
system and giving it the ability to recognize the pathogen as it enters the body to be more easily and
readily destroyed. Autism, on the other hand, has not yet been fully linked back to a specific cause or
reason. Because of this uncertainty, disgruntled parents have chosen to believe ideas with no scientific
backing behind them besides what discredited scientist Wakefield said in a paper linking the MMR
vaccine to autism along with some celebrities following Jenny McCarthy s Anti Vaccination
Movement. This issue holds controversial value because of all of the parents whom refuse to vaccinate
their children putting them at risk for the diseases that the vaccine is supposed to prevent. All of this is
due to the one doctor who was bribed by a lawyer company four hundred thousand euros to bad mouth
vaccinations to give them a case against it in a lawsuit. This lost him his medical license and even still
is believed to this very day by a large group of people. This topic is talked about on the internet quite
often and it s typically a debate between parents and doctors with little to no reasoning behind the
parents perspective. This issue is so compelling because it is almost rage inducing to think about
parents putting their children s lives at risk for a controversy that was made

How Did William Harvey Discovered The Circulatory System
Medical page William Harvey discovered the circulatory system. Bleeding frequently was actually
considered good for people s health. Doctors used drugs to make people throw up, pee in order to get
rid of being sick. Chemicals and minerals were used as medicine. Any form of medicine was rarely
effective. In China, powdered pearl was swallowed in order to get rid of toxins in the system, clean the
liver, reduce stress and to treat sore throat. It also helped cure burns, cuts, and sores. There was no
anesthesia and no one understood how infections happened, only the most desperate patients were
brave and only the strongest and bravest surgeons would do it. The surgical tools doctors used were

Doctor priests had a higher status than some surgeons who were working more than skilled mechanics
of the body, working with their hands rather than their brains. Infections were very common to occur.
Surgery was the last option. They tried to not have to perform surgery. It was something to be replaced
because death was the only alternative besides surgery. Most procedures were simple and easy but that
doesn t necessarily mean they can t prevent infections. The doctors who took orders from God ranked
higher than the men who performed the surgeries with hope and skill but they lacked knowledge to
help the patient. One common treatment was taking blood from the patient. The four humors was
mucus, yellow bile, blood, and black bile. Some treatments can kill the patients before the disease
would. One of his findings was that blood was used many times did not make him stop from making
people from bleeding. He told his patients to eat smaller meals and to not drink alcohol. A small
opening connects each ventricle with the atrium. In each opening there is a value. The value makes
sure the blood flows in one direction. Blood moves from the atria to the vesicles. The large blood

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Dengue
The Problem:
Dengue is a mosquito borne disease typically found in tropical and sub tropical areas but it is
commonly found in other countries all around Asia, with global warming thought to be helping with
the spread of the disease. Singapore provides a perfect environment for breeding and has an ongoing
battle with dengue.
The problem we face now with the population growth of the Aedes mosquitos is that the greater the
population of the mosquito, the higher the risk of dengue fever. The reason dengue is so serious, is the
fact that it can be potentially fatal. Aedes mosquitos breed in clean stagnant water, with a life cycle of
seven days. They are the only mosquitos that carry the viral dengue disease. Expansion of human
population and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some other benefits are that it is a healthy application, which creates a relatively safe environment
free from mosquitos. Although there are benefits, the disadvantages are that it is only applied to
specific areas and cannot completely eradicate the mosquito. According to a study made in 2005 by
the Singapore Medical Association, the usual chemical fogging in natural environment was ineffective
in breaking the reproductive lifecycle by elimination gravid female aedes mosquitos (Chua, K. B).
Although this is only one experiment, breaking the female reproductive cycle is considered vital in
controlling and ultimately eradicating the aedes mosquito. Other disadvantages to fogging include, the
fact that when uncontrolled it can contain diesel and insecticides that can sometimes be toxic for
humans, domestic animals and wildlife. An additional reason as to why some thermal fogging is bad,
is that pesticides exposed in an animals habitat can lead to Biomagnification. Biomagnification is the
increase of a toxic substance, in this case insecticides in an organisms tissue as it goes up the food
chain or water course etc. This affects the health of the living organism and eventually will corrupt the
food chain as all the organisms in the specific food chain die out. Recent advances include the
introduction of genetically modified mosquito s to eradicate

Cultural Revoluation in China
One of the most significant changes occurred in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. During the
revolution itself, China was virtually cut off from the rest of the world in a form of extreme cultural
protectionism (Hong, 1998, p.2). There was a severe lack of cultural imports during the Cultural
Revolution, regardless of whether they were industrial or cultural imports. However, under Deng
Xiaoping s leadership, an era of reform began in China. The nation began to open itself up politically
and economically, leading to widespread importation of foreign products during the 1980s. Some of
the complexities of Chinese media start to emerge during this period, particularly in the interaction
between global and local forces. The importation of Western goods is a combination of both internal
and external factors. From a global or external standpoint, factors include the popularity of Western
products, the rise of global trade, and worldwide technological development. On the other hand,
internal factors deal more with changes in government intervention, new media policies, and shifts in
the makeup of society itself (Hong, 1998, p.3). With the opening up of China in the 1980s, the country
soon became one of the biggest buyers in the global television programming market. Massive
importation soon led to imitation, as can be seen in the importation and imitation of telenovelas. In
this case, it was specifically the impact of the global product being consumed in a local market that

Weapons and tools are two things that separate us from other species. The use of weapons against each
other or and foe has forcefully dictated the outcome of history as we know it. Weapons have brought
armies together, and toppled empires that were thought to be unbreakable. After precise review and
consideration, the most influential weapons to ever exist and be known is the bow and arrow, the
sword, the longbow, the flintlock, the cannon, the Gatling gun, pistol, airplane, AK 47 and last of all
the Nuclear Bomb. On the fact that this list is in chronological order, I am starting this list with the

Bronze is a more suitable substance for casting as well, so metal workers could mold swords of
similar quality in generous amounts. Since the bronze age, the sword has seen its use in almost every
army up into the early 20th century. The bronze sword s use is recognized in Ancient Egypt from the
first dynastic period(protodynastic, Naqada III) until the era of the New Kingdom. The bronze sword
was used all around the ancient world in places like China until 200 B.C E.when iron swords were
adopted widely. One widely known Iron Age sword is the Hispanic Sword, more commonly known as
the Gladius. The Gladius was constructed of steel and was made for thrusting and slashing. Its success
in battle made it the most iconic and influential short sword in Roman History and brought the empire
its wealth, land mass, and reputation.Even though the Roman Gladius was an influential weapon,
Medieval swords defined a time period. Men were made knights with the touch of a sword and then
carry shining swords, representative of their heroism and strength, into battle. Surrendering would also
be symbolized by the giving up of a sword. Many knights and people of classes would train their
whole life to perfect their swordsmanship. After the middle ages, mostly around the renaissance
period, the sword became a way of justice and a means of honor. Sword skill was an essential for all

Tariffs During The Gilded Age Essay
1.Tariffs It is one of the political issues during the Gilded Age that brought changes in the way politics
were conducted. The conventional tariffs were taxes charged on imported products to raise money for
agencies that looked after goods and individuals entering America ( Politics in the Gilded Age ). On
the other hand, the protective tariff was introduced to so as to govern industries and businesses in
America. As a result, high tariffs ensured that producers competed on fair grounds with foreign
products, as they raised the price of imported goods, and, therefore, made American products more
attractive. Therefore, workers were encouraged to support political parties that supported high tariffs
to avoid losing their jobs. 2.Rise and Fall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Americans as well as a symbol and state of mind. The closure of the frontier in 1890 did not weaken
the symbol but rather strengthened it. People started gaining an interest in preserving the land. Though
Yellowstone National Park and California s Yosemite were built in 1872 and 1890 respectively to
protect the area, the Congress created the Forest Reserve Act requesting the government to prevent
people from clearing and settling in the forest areas ( The Closing of the Frontier ). Nevertheless, John

these actions ensured that the symbol of the land was conserved than there before. 7. Developments i)

the most glaring examples of hypocrisy come from three female characters: Mrs. Dubose, Mrs.

Walt Whitman s Poem, To a Locomotive in Winter and Emily...
From Grandeur to Arrogance Walt Whitman s poem, To a Locomotive in Winter and Emily Dickinson
s I Like to See It Lap The Miles are two different poems about the same subject, the steam engine.
Where Whitman uses solely free verse, Dickinson s poem more closely follows standard writing
practices, with very structured line breaks. Another key difference in these works is the speech they
use; Whitman uses old English laden with thee and thy, whereas Dickinson uses fairly modern
terminology. Whitman describes the elegant and powerful grandeur of the locomotive from the shining
brass and steel to the twinkling of the wheels. Dickinson describes the arrogance and nuisance of it as

The Sociology Of A Commercial Airline Pilot Essay
This assignment focuses on analyzing the sociology of a commercial airline pilot s job and the
working environment in this increasingly influential sector. An airline pilot carries great responsibility
and their job comes with a magnitude of risks. It is both a physically and mentally demanding career
choice that requires one to remain calm under pressure whilst operating in a different time zone and
unpredictable weather conditions, as well as having to meet the health requirements such as perfect
vision and coordination (to name a few). Commercial aviation is one of the world s biggest sectors
and so the magnitude of research is immense, however the aim of this research assignment is to focus
on tensions and trends surrounding the occupation of commercial airline pilots; such as gender
inequality and stereotypes, as women continue to face gender barriers due to the industry being

burnouts in some cases, which impacts on the well being of employees. Finally the analysis concludes

Israel And Peace Now
For hundreds of years the Jews and Muslims have fought tirelessly over territory in Israel. Since the
Zionists invaded palestine in the late 1800s, the conflict has been unceasing and ever growing. There
have been talks of peace and it has been almost achieved, however an agreement has never been
reached due to many circumstances. Peace Now is an organization devoted to bringing peace and
understanding to the region of Israel and Palestine. We believe that the military and civilian control of
the west bank and of over three million Palestinians is a true danger to the security and democratic
nature of Israel as the state of the Jewish people (Peacenow.org.il). There are many ways that this can
be resolved, we believe, but it would take much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These Palestinians have been working for decades to return to their homeland, but the Israeli
government does not recognize this as a legitimate legal right. We believe that it is possible and
essential to resolve this issue in a manner that would recognize the protests of the refugees, while still
keeping the character of the state of Israel intact. Israel has acknowledged these claims during peace
talkts, and has offered to allow a set number of Palestinians to return to Israel and would be given
some form of compensation for the loss of the refugees property. This solution is not acceptable to
palestine really, and more negotiation is crucial to finding a complete and lasting peace agreement
between Israel and Palestine. Peace Now believes in the Geneva Initiative s solution for the refugee
problem. This would entail providing financial compensation to the Palestinian refugees and to the
states that have been harboring them while they were exiled. There are several options for the
Palestinian refugees and where they can take their permanent place of residence. Some of these are to
create a future Palestinian state, they can remain in their current state, or several third party countries,
including Israel, can allow them to migrate there at their choosing. The most fair and likely of these
solutions for both sides would actually be a combination of all of these options.

Chronic Sinusitis Research Paper
Chronic sinusitis is one of the commonest chronic illnesses worldwide. Its prevalence has been
increasing with each year. In the United States, its prevalence has been found to be 146 per 1000
population, and is seen to be increasing every year, due to myriad of factors including increasing
incidence of allergies, air pollution and HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that there are at least 18 million
visits to physicians each year for this reason, this has, in turn, led to increasingly escalating cost
attributed to treatment, amounting to tens of billions, per year. A study done, showed that chronic
sinusitis was causing increased morbidity for patients. At least 40% patients said that they thought the
disease caused moderate to a lot of disturbance to their normal lives (1). Other studies have shown an
even higher prevalence of chronic sinusitis in the United States, at 16% of the population,
corresponding to more than 26 million outpatient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are classified as incidental findings or incidentalomas. Some findings can be benign while some
may require follow up imaging and/or referral and review by a consultant specialist. Sinus disease is
often reported as an incidental or chance finding in patients undergoing CT for non sinus related
pathologies. This can sometimes lead to empirical treatment with antibiotics or referrals to
otolaryngologists or ENT surgeons. In our setting, many CT scans of the head which are found to have
mucosal thickening of the sinuses, are reported as having an incidental finding of sinusitis. These
findings are not commonly graded according to severity. However, is it justified to give a diagnosis of
sinusitis following a chance finding of sinonasal pathology? The importance of such findings is
difficult to interpret without baseline knowledge of the incidence of sinus disease in the general

Social Democrats And Neo Liberals
Both social democrats and neo liberals claim to support a free society. This essay will discuss how and
why their visions of freedom diverge. This essay will focus on the social vision of social democracy
and neo liberalism, as freedom is subject to this vision. The social vision involves the society and its
values. What kind of society does the ideology want and how do they want to achieve this kind of
society? This essay will discuss the social democratic vision of freedom, the neo liberal vision of
freedom and will then argue how and why their visions diverge.
As a hybrid ideology, social democracy took shape around the mid twentieth century, resulting from
the tendency among western socialist parties not only to adopt parliamentary strategies, but also to
revise their socialist goals. In particular, they abandoned the goal of abolishing capitalism and sought
instead to reform or humanize it. Being based on a compromise between the market and the state,
social democracy lacks a systematic underlying theory and is, arguably, inherently vague. This
revisionist socialism has been primarily concerned with social justice, a just or fair distribution of
wealth in society (Heywood 2012, pp. 125 129). In contrast with many liberals, social democrats
believe that freedom has financial and social preconditions. It is not only about securing negative
freedoms, but ensuring what is called positive freedom . Freedom must be legally ensured and
effectively guaranteed. Similarly

Conductive Hearing Loss Research Paper
Conductive hearing loss is when there is a problem with the ear canal, ear drum, or middle ear. When
there are problems in the middle ear it s from an issue with the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes).
There are several types of causes that can produce conductive hearing loss; deformation of outer ear,
ear canal, or middle ear, fluid in the middle ear, ear infection, allergies, bad Eustachian tube function,
perforated eardrum, benign tumors, impacted earwax, and Otosclerosis (Hearing Loss Association of
America). In any of these cases, conductive hearing loss affects the brain by not allowing the inner ear
transduce the sound waves into neural signals. The brain cannot receive the signals because the
stimulation of sound is being blocked or severely reduced by any of the reasons given above. The
brain is either receiving little to no neurological signals and the brain does not like to be bored (Wolfe,
Kluender, Levi, 2015).
The most common reason conductive hearing loss occurs is otitis media. Otitis media is a buildup of
fluid in the middle ear, depending on the situation the fluid can be ... Show more content on

Infections are treated with antibiotics or other antifungal medication. Chronic ear infections, fluid in
the middle ear, and the benign tumors are corrected with surgery. When conductive hearing loss is
caused by head trauma surgery is also used to correct the damage in the middle ear structures (Hearing
Loss Association of America). The most common reason older people have conductive hearing loss is
from impacted earwax. As we age, ear wax becomes drier and sticker. This makes it more likely for
the ear wax to build up and become impacted. When this occurs, your hearing will become muffled
because the ear canal is blocked and cannot receive the sound waves as well. This can be treated by
simply having your doctor remove the impacted earwax (HealthinAging,

Importance Of A Setting In The Father, By Thomas King
Importance of a Setting In literature, a story s setting not only creates conflict, but it may also
determine the choices that characters ultimately make, affecting the complications the story may have.
The setting contributes to the plot of three short stories that have been read in class. In The Father,
written by Hugh Garner, one setting is a graveyard that symbolizes a relationship in the plot.
Throughout Borders, by Thomas King, the setting of a border dividing Canada and the US is obvious
with it s symbolism of detachment that is a reoccurring theme in the plot. Alden Nowlan s, the fall of a
city, uses the setting of an attic in contribution to the plot to represent repressed emotional issues the
characters have. A setting introduces details that may not have otherwise been there, creating depth.
The graveyard setting in The Father contributes to the plot by symbolizing the collapse the antagonist
caused to his relationship with his son. The father was at his son s boy scout banquet when he caved
into his vice, alcohol, which caused him to create a scene at the banquet. This scene essentially killed
his relationship with his son. As he hurried after him he wondered if he would ever be able to draw
close to his son again (Garner 35). During the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Students are hardpressed to learn in 10 years a curriculum that is actually designed for 12 years in

There are several reasons why cooperative learning works well. The idea that students learn more by
doing something active than by simply watching and listening has long been known to both cognitive
psychologists and effective teachers (Bransford, et. al., 2000) and cooperative learning is by its nature
an active method. Beyond that, cooperation enhances learning in several ways. Weak students working
individually are likely to give up when they get stuck; working cooperatively, they keep going. Strong
students faced with the task of explaining and clarifying material to weaker students often find gaps in
their own understanding and fill them in. Students working alone may tend to delay completing
assignments or skip them altogether, but when they know that others are counting on them, they are
motivated to do the work in a timely manner. This study is an opportunity to enhance the researcher s
knowledge of cooperative learning and examine the effect of cooperative learning groups in
promoting a deeper understanding of the Grade 7 mathematics curriculum. The students will be
gradually switched from a direct instruction approach to a cooperative learning environment. Groups
will be formed based on past grades of students from different ability levels working together. Many
teachers, including those who teach mathematics, are sure to benefit from this research.

The First Chapter Of Anselm s Argument
The first chapter of Anselm s Monologian focuses on Anselm s argument that there is something that
is the best, the greatest, the highest, of all existing things. It is through this unknown something that all
things possess their goodness. According to the argument he puts forth, the goodness of things in this
world must be caused and must therefore stem from one thing that is good, or from many. If goods can
be comparable as goods, it follows that there must be some general and unified way of regarding their
goodness, or the source of their goodness. However, if many causes have their goodness in common, it
is through this goodness that they cause good things. Ergo, there must be a common source. In either
case, whether the cause is one or many, a single, unitary source of goodness is indicated. Anselm
argues that this source of all goodness is not good because of something else, but is itself goodness.
The proofs for Anselm s argument are as follows: Whenever various things are said to be good in
greater, lesser, or equal degree, either a) different good s are good through different things, or b) there
is some one thing through which they are all good. Anselm s argument supports option b. He purports
that there are infinite goods, which can be experienced by the senses and identified through reason.
Hence, there is some one thing through which all goods are good, and that through which all goods are
good is a great good. Furthermore, that through which all

During the holocaust, because of the inability to pay with money, Vladek requested to instead receive

the book, Mala had left Vladek, and also left a half eaten box of cereal which Vladek intended to get a

alive, and he was to do anything he could to make sure he never ran out, so if one day Hitler did come

The Death Of Sir Richard Steele
The best remembered periodical essayist, dramatist, and a politician was a man named Sir Richard

The Fives System

the phrase a place for everything and everything in its place. (Byrne) Meaning that the workplace

Napoleon s Letters From An Italian Nobleman s Family
Acquiring insight into the personalities and feelings of any historical figure is a tricky thing. Often we
are left with secondary, and sometimes very biased, accounts of how individuals conducted
themselves in various situations in their lives. But luckily, we are sometimes left with vivid sources
penned by figures themselves, and that is what we have with Napoleon s letters. Through them we can
hope to gain a better and more well rounded look into the life one of the most loved, and reviled, men
in recent history.
To begin, let us take a look at Napoleon s letters to his immediate family. Letter 71 is addressed to his
sister Pauline, who in 1803 had married into an Italian nobleman s family. In this letter, Napoleon
expresses his love for his sister, and wishes her nothing but happiness, showing a tender and brotherly
side not often associated with the conquering emperor. But this letter is also no simple social call, but
a request that his sister make herself known and appreciated as a socialite in the city of Rome, seat of
the Papal States. This is a shrewd and clever move on his part, displaying an understanding of the
delicacies of statesmanship and foreign opinion.
In letter 109, a brief note penned in 1806 to his sister Elisa, Napoleon urges her to only allow dresses
of silk and batiste to be worn at the court of her husband in Italy. He insists that preference may be
given to the products of French industry , and is fully confident that such fashion will become

The Overfishing Of Our Oceans
Overfishing
The ocean makes up nearly three quarters of the planet s surface and contains about eighty percent of
the life on earth. Millions of people all over the world depend on seafood heavily as a primary source
of food. Americans alone consumed as much as 15.8 pounds of seafood per person in 2009 (NOAA).
This is a lot of fish. In fact, it is so much that many populations of fish are going extinct. At this
particular rate according to National Geographic, scientist predict that the earth is expected to lose all
of its current fisheries by the year 2048 (Roach). The overfishing of our oceans leads to unmanageable
practices that will eventually cause many species of fish to become extinct.
According to National Geographic, overfishing dates back to the 1800s when humans killed off
massive amounts of whale population to retrieve blubber for lamp oil (Roach). Similarly, Atlantic cod,
herring, and California s sardines, were also fished to the brink of extinction by the mid 1900s. Theses
cases were extremely harmful to the ecosystems food chain. To counter these losses, the United States
passed the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (NOAA). This law made it
illegal for foreign countries to fish within 200 nautical miles of the United States shoreline. This
would make it easier to manage illegal fishing. Congress also established eight regional councils with
representation from the coastal states and fishery stakeholders. Their jobs were to come up

A Short Note On The Uses And Functions Of A Server On...
BIND in Linux BIND (Berkeley Internet name domain) is the most commonly used DNS (domain
name system) server on the Internet, and it is the defacto standard on Linux and other Unix like
operating systems. DNS is the name resolution (i.e., translation) system that permits users to locate
computers on a network by using their domain name rather than their IP addresses. IP addresses,
which form the basis of addressing on the Internet and most other networks, each can contain as many
as 12 digits under the currently mainstream IPv4 addressing scheme (or as many as 32 hexadecimal
digits under the next generation IPv6 addressing scheme). It can be difficult for humans to remember
such addresses, but it is relatively easy for them to remember domain names, which typically use
alphabetic characters and consist of words, abbreviations or acronyms. BIND provides an openly
redistributable reference implementation of the major components of the DNS, including a DNS
server (called named), a DNS resolver library and tools for verifying the proper operation of the DNS
server. The resolver library is a collection of functions written in the C programming language that
provides hostname to IP address and IP address to hostname lookup services.BIND was originally
written at University of California at Berkeley (UCB) as a graduate student project under a grant from
the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration (DARPA). The acronym BIND

looked like it was placed on a piece of land in the middle of nowhere and all the actors were told to
stand in the back ground and look as they were puppets on a string. Oliver wanted more focus on
Himself as henry rather than how the battle took place in realization. A person would have to have a
really good imagination to believe this was a battle. There was one scene where Henry was fighting
with the French it almost seemed as it was a sword fight between two adolescent children. A medieval
historical war is supposed to be bloody and gruesome Olivier failed to please. Oliver s film was

Describe the Difference in Managerial Accounting vs. Cost...
Describe how managerial accounting is different from cost accounting. Cost accounting is the process
of tracking, recording and analyzing costs associated with a company s product or project. Internal
managers are the ones who normally use cost accounting information. Direct Costs, Indirect Costs and
Overhead/Absorbed Costs are usually what are measured in Cost Accounting. This information is then
used by managers when decisions are made dealing with company costs and how to improve the
profit. (Wild Shaw) Management accounting provides the other managers information on the business
decisions that allow them to keep their management and control functions equipped. Management
accounting is used within an organization and is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The financial bonuses should be tied to how much the team saves this year. Often companies tend to
cut individuals who do not have top priority tasks. Keeping the ones who are important understand
and will help you save a lot of money. Dr. White has to prepare to implement cost reductions in her
organization; she must be open, honest and be sincere with all the staff about reducing the cost and
how this will affect the organization. She should reduce the headcount in proportion in the difference
within the work load. If the community center generally treats more cases that the outpatient sections
then the cuts could be made from outpatient. Service contracts are easy to work with as long as the
current provider or new provider is reasonable. Normally travel, consultation and professional budgets
are cut. What is the hardest has to cut people that work closely with a manager, it is important for the
manager to budget responsibly. The employee should be notified immediately of such actions so they
are prepared and can have time to look for something new. Sometimes this is not the case, as for a
friend of mine who showed up to work one day and they informed her they had to let her go. Usually
an outgoing employee should be provided with a departure package, lump sum payment or package
with benefits to help them with the sudden change.
With the first budget below, it has been reduced $94,000. There has been an

Research Paper On Latin Dance Fiesta
Latin Dance Fiesta
On Saturday, April 22, 2017, I attended a Latin Dance Fiesta event at the Queens Theatre, the event
featured Sisa Pakari Danza Ecuador, Ballet Folclórico del Salvador, Ballet Folklórico Paraguayo and
Bombazo Dance Company. The show started with Sisa Pakari Danza Ecuador with an Andean song
dedicated to Pacha Mama/Mother Earth, this song is to thank the earth for a good harvest. The dancers
were wearing traditional garments, the women artists had embroidered white blouses (camisas),
shawls (rebozos), black wrap skirts (anakus), gold colored bead necklaces (walkas) and red bead
bracelets (maki watana), with their hair wrapped up in strips of woven cloth (cintas). Male artists were
wearing sport dapper blue ponchos (ruwanas) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This song is well known in el Salvador since it is usually presented at cultural activities. The dancers
wore typical costumes, with the women dressed in white with colorful embroidered shirts and skirts,
and men wore traditional pants and embroidered shirts.
The third dance company to follow onto the stage was Ballet Folklórico Paraguayo. The group,
performed by four female dancers, moved at the rhythms of the Paraguayan polka which combines
ternary and binary rhythms, whereas the European form only uses binary. The announcer informed
that, the most famous style of music in Paraguay is Guarania, created by the Paraguayan musician
José Asunción Flores in 1926. The Guarania accomplishes this by using a combination of slow
rhythms and melodies of melancholia character. The dancers were wearing traditional full pleated
skirts decorated with lace, their blouses were worn off the shoulder and the sleeves were made of lace.
The body of their blouses were embroidered in red, white and blue which are the colors of the
Paraguayan flag, I also noticed that their hair was worn up and their jewelry was of silver and coral
color. In my opinion, this was one of the most impressive group of dancers of the event, because the
performers presented the dance of

Vertebrate Compare And Contrast
What is a chordate? How are vertebrates different from chordates: Chordates are the beginning of the
vertebrate phylum, they have a long flexible rod called a notochord, pharyngeal clefts, and muscular
tails. The notochord runs between the digestive tract and dorsal nerve, the chord is made from stiff
tissue and fluid filled cells. Vertebrates are still chordates, but they do not have a notochord, the
notochord forms into vertebrae and the spine later in the development of the embryos. Compare and
contrast the ways that fungi eat with the ways that animals digest, and absorb their food: Fungi have
specialized roots called hyphae that don t grow in width, but in length as to maximize surface area
ratios, a mass of hyphae is called a mycelia

Rape As A Weapon Of War
Being a part of a global community comes with many responsibilities and duties. People of the global
community have to be aware of the dangers that are present in the lives of many people all over the
globe. Human Rights issues are quite serious and violations of these rights should not be taken lightly.
In exploration of a global human rights issue, the discovery of rape as a tool in war was a gross
violation of human rights as well as overwhelmingly a gender issue. Rape used as a tool of war has
devastated and destroyed people, communities, families, and traditions. When discussing rape as
weapon of war, there are two main modern day conflicts that can not be overlooked. Rape as a weapon
of war is brought into light by the wars of Congo and Bosnia. These two conflicts brought the eyes of
the world onto the global issue of rape in war and more specifically how it is used as a tool of
ethnocide and genocide. The recent conflict in the Congo has been rooted in the 1994 Rwandan
Genocide and related violence in Burundi which saw hundreds of thousands of Hutus flee both
countries into eastern Zaïre. (First and Second) In the Rwandan genocide, Hutu power groups (called
the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi) led mass killings of Tutsis and pro peace Hutus, murdering
800,000 people in approximately 100 days. (Congo) In response, the Tutsi led Rwandan Patriotic
Front, or RPF, overthrew the Rwandan Hutu government.
During and after the genocide, an estimated 2 million refugees,

The Power Of Invisibility
Have you ever wondered what the actual meaning of life is and why we are here? Evidently, there is a
reason for the existence of things and we are no exception. Every day we observe people struggle to
survive in the world, but no one seems to be interested in creating an exceptional and safer world. But,
what if we could procreate a difference? What if we were offered the opportunity to have the abilities
that we only observe in movies, the ability only super heroes are forenamed to have? What would you
do with a superpower? The privilege of having any kind of super power contains its responsibilities
and can easily be used for either exceptional or unpleasant deeds. Having a super power, such as
invisibility would not just be astonishing, but it would increase your ability to perform activities and
help people. The power of invisibility consists of being impossible to be seen or perceived by any
sight sense. You might be thinking that invisibility isn t considered a colossal power, but if you behold
at the bigger picture, you might just realize the potential of a power like this. Can you imagine the tons
of things you could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This action will be even more useful than time traveling. Many might ask why it contains a higher
quality. For one reason, we crave to turn back time to fix our mistakes, but if there are no mistakes to
fix? Life would be more suitable considering that we would have nothing to regret about. In the
meanwhile, someone with the super power or invisibility will be able to help society and shape the

Adapting Neil s Development From Counselor To Children
I chose to follow the development of Neil; he grew up in Liverpool suburb in a middle class
household. At 7 years he was a funny and playful child who had aspirations of becoming an astronaut
or perhaps a bus driver. In a very interesting turn of events, we discover that by the time he is 35 he
was the complete opposite of that fun loving child, most likely due to a mental illness. He had gone
tough, very tough times in his life where he was homeless and lived off of the government. By the
time he was 56 he had once again turned his life around and become involved with the liberal
democratic party and served as a counselor to children.
Neil is a prime example of the extents to which nature and nurture can shape development. The
progression ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can see the miltidirectionality in Neil s development when we think about how he couldn t be a
functioning member of society for a very long period in his life. His physical and cognitive
developments were normal throughout his life since he had normal physical qualities such as height
and weight as well as had substantial intelligence. However, from the point after his childhood all the
way up to middle adulthood he was noticeably behind in socioemotional development. For instance, in
early adulthood he had to stay in abandoned properties because he was homeless. During this time, he
moved from the hectic city of London to the country in Scotland where he found himself and
eventually found a vocation he loved. He said that his formal education never prepared him for real
life and that s why he was a failure for all those years until he was able to actually experience life and
grow as a social being. The multidimentionality of Neil s development is also evident as different
aspects of his development were at an all time high at some point and at others they were in decline.
When he was 7 he was at a high point in his social development as he was highly interactive with his
environment, knew how to behave according to society s laws and knew what he wanted out of his life
even if at this point in life that was mare fantasy. He had achieved this level of social development
again by the time he was 56 as he felt fulfilled as an individual and was full of purpose. In contrast his
cognitive development was at its highest right before he was rejected by Oxford university as this was
the time when he was taking his education the most serious and was earning good

The Real Housewives Of Atlanta
Television has been one the most influential pieces of technology as a source for entertainment.
During the earliest days of Televisions introduction into society, there were always shows highlighting
the portrayals of mothers cooking and cleaning their homes for their husbands and children. Although,
as time moved on, television and the shows that were channeled on it took a dramatic turn, leaving the
days of drama free entertainment as a vast memory. Today, however, when a person turns on a
television and flips through the vastness of channels on their cable network to eventually a channel
like Bravo, the screen goes on to glisten and proceeds to portraying ritzy socialite women dealing with
their everyday lives as housewives . The Real Housewives of Atlanta deals with the everyday lives of
modern day housewives living in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon thought of these women and their family
life, the reality series displays to its viewers, that practically a significant majority of family life
involved in a modern day generation is dramatic, full of misconceptions and misrepresentations of
how people are perceived, and that fame is can be a problem for family life. Reality shows have the
allure of garnering the interest of millions of people around the world with the promise of authenticity
and representations of actuality. Producers often use the strategy of claiming that that these reality
shows are almost always completely unscripted and that they simply document the lives of

The Effects Of Air Pollution In The San Joaquin Valley
Further, the valley s bad air quality is deteriorated by the geographical location and the weather. The
physical location of the valley makes the area prone to elevated temperatures during the summer, often
causing wild fires, hazards and long droughts. The San Joaquin Valley is a basin that is formed by the
three surrounding mountains, which trapes air inside the basin, making it hard for air currents to
circulate and thus causes the accumulation of air pollutants. The air particulates that are trapped lead
to a thermal inversion forming a warm air layer which further intensifies the trapping effect (Berg,
2011). The geographical location of the valley is one of the factors that cannot be simply changed, but
alternate methods of regulating emissions should be put in place to reduce the effects. Although the
valley is no longer considered to be in a drought, the effects of it from three years ago still affect the
area. During the drought, the accumulation of particulate matters increased substantially which
combined with the lack of rain, put a halt to the natural elimination of PM (Caiola, 2015). Although
the geographical disadvantages cannot be changed, it should be considered when planning to reduce
the effects of air pollution in the valley.
Agriculture is a major contributor to air pollution in San Joaquin Valley, but because of the thermal
inversion (Berg, 2011) and trapping of bad air in the atmosphere the crop yield in cities like Fresno are
dropping drastically

Autocracies, Oligarchy, And Democracy
Government is an essential part of civilization in modern and historic times. This crucial element of
society has been observed in different forms. There are three main systems of governments: autocracy,
oligarchy, and democracy. Which system a government belongs to is determined by who hold the
sovereignty, meaning who has the supreme power and authority ( Sovereignty ). This leads to there
being major differences between autocracies, oligarchies, and democracies. In an autocracy, one
person has all the power. The person can gain their power by being related to the previous ruler, and
then it would be also known as a monarchy. Andorra is an example of a current monarchy. Sometimes
force is used to attain and hold authority, this is known as a dictatorship. North Korea is a dictatorship,
with Kim Jong Un being the dictator. Theocracies can also be autocracies when there is a single
religious leader who controls the government, such as Iran. ( Governments: How Do They Run? ).
This government system is very fast at making decisions and this can be helpful ... Show more content

An example of such found in the past would be Sparta. In Sparta, the largest segment of the
population was not permitted to vote and only a few had any political power ( Oligarchy ). The Soviet
Union could have also been deemed an oligarchy because communist countries are characteristically
considered such. Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia can still be thought of as an oligarchy
due to the events following the collapse of the communist regimen, a select few accumulated wealth,
and along with wealth, political power ( Oligarchy ). Wealth, social standing, and military force are
the driving factors that determine which people are in a power welding group. Usually it is a blend of
these three factors. The citizens are controlled in oligarchies similarly to autocracies. This is done in
order to keep as much power with as few as people as

  • 2. Examples Of Conflict In Rules Of The Game By Amy Tan Within the text Rules of the Game written by Amy Tan, the clash of Chinese beliefs and values with those of American beliefs and values can be seen. This clash of values and beliefs between two culture causes many mother daughter conflicts throughout the story. Waverly grew up in San Francisco in a Chinese American neighborhood while her mother was a first generation immigrant. This difference in their surroundings has caused their beliefs and values to differ from each other. Due to the clashing of Chinese and American cultures, there are multiple incidents of conflict between MeiMei and her mother. A key example of such an incident is when MeiMei is forced to accompany her mother to the Saturday market. According to the text, MeiMei s mother would proudly walk with MeiMei and tell everyone who looked towards them that MeiMei was her daughter. MeiMei then told her mom if she could stop telling everyone who looked their way that MeiMei was her daughter. Her mother misunderstood what MeiMei said, thinking that MeiMei was ashamed of walking with her. This then caused MeiMei to tell her mother, If you want to show me off, then why don t you learn to play chess. When MeiMei had realized that what she said was wrong, she ran away from her mother. To MeiMei, her mother going around and telling everyone that MeiMei was her daughter was embarrassing because she didn t want her mom to use her as a source to gain popularity. In MeiMei s beliefs, her chess victories were her own accomplishments, one she should be the only one to use since she feels as though she gained them on her own. Her mother on the other hand, sees MeiMei s achievements as a victory for the whole family and is proud of her daughter. MeiMei misunderstands this, thinking her mother was just crediting herself for MeiMei s work and so runs off. This clash in values caused this incident. MeiMei s escape from her mother leads to a new conflict of MeiMei running away from her mom. It is stated in the text that MeiMei ran through the alleyways until she realized that she was running from nothing. After two hours, MeiMei returned home and her mother said, We not concerning this girl. This girl not have concerning for us. From this it can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Social Classes In The Leopard A major part of society, ranging from the beginning of time until present day, has been the aspect of social classes and the distinguishing features between the different levels. In Giuseppe Di Lampedusa s novel The Leopard, through the use of different characters to symbolize the different social classes and the relationships between them, the author successfully distinguished and defined the different groups in nineteenth century Italian society. A special spotlight is shown on the aristocracy as that is the class the main character, Prince Fabrizio, belongs to. It is seen through the novel quite clearly the distinction between the different social classes ,the relationships between them, and why characters in the different classes behave as they do. The characters in this book that are members of the aristocracy are also a part of the royal, or now ex royal, Salinas family. Prince Fabrizio and his wife Princess Stella were born into this life of luxury. They even brought in a few children, Concetta and Paolo. Prince Fabrizio is an extremely dynamic character. He is used to being rich just because he was born rich and is not interested in working hard for what he has. He was presented with a job to work for the new Italian government but turned it down and recommended Don Calogero because of what seemed to be a lack of motivation to actually have to work in order to earn money. Fabrizio is described to be quick tempered and that is proven when he gets upset in the garden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Philadelphia Chromosome And Leukemia Essay Essay 88: The Philadelphia Chromosome and Leukemia The so called Philadelphia chromosome is an abnormal chromosomal structure present in most cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and to a lesser extent in other types of leukemia, most notably acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The origin of the term Philadelphia chromosome simply reflects the fact that a research team first identified this abnormality in a blood sample from a leukemia patient in Philadelphia, PA. CML vs. Acute Leukemias Unlike acute forms of leukemia, in which the cardinal manifestations (fever, weight loss, and fatigue) appear abruptly, patients with CML may be asymptomatic for months or even years prior to diagnosis. Even after diagnosis, many patients with chronic forms of leukemia survive 5 10 years or longer. In approximately 90% of CML patients an abnormal structure known as the Philadelphia chromosome results from an event known as a chromosomal translocation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In CML, a chromosomal translocation occurs between chromosomes 9 and 22. Geneticists abbreviate this event t9:22. The result of this t9:22 translocation is the juxtaposition of the c abl tyrosine kinase gene on chromosome 9 with the bcr (breakpoint cluster region) on chromosome 22. The product is an abnormal fusion gene that encodes a constitutively active tyrosine kinase called bcr abl. The bcr abl protein is a perpetually active version of a cell proliferation signal. The normal versions of these intracellular tyrosine kinases are generally inactivated unless the cell is responding to growth factors or cytokines that promote cell proliferation. The bcr abl protein is a different story. It acts like a broken record, continuously telling the cell to copy its DNA and undergo cell division. Consequently, lymphocytes that undergo the t9:22 translocation begin to proliferate out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Massacre And Abu Ghraib Torture Prison The My Lai massacre and the Abu Ghraib torture prison were both tragic events in history that Americans were involved in. The My Lai massacre took place during the Vietnam war in 1968. Lieutenant William Calley ordered the Charlie Company to proceed with the attack on the village of My Lai. Their goal was to exterminate the Viet Cong combatants and any one who stood in their way, but they ended up killing hundreds of innocent unarmed civilians instead. The Abu Ghraib torture and prison was an american military run prison that was active during the Iraqi war in 2003 until 2006. They captured Iraqi soldiers and tortured them in extremely inhumane and unimaginable ways. These horrific occurrences made an impact on a countless amount of communities and people s lives around the world whether they had connections to the incidents or not, which is why this issue is such an important matter to discuss. The concepts that will be discussed in this essay are the similarities between the events of the My Lai massacre and Abu Ghraib prison, the major difference between the two, considering who was truly responsible for the events at the Abu Ghraib prison, discussing whether or not the lessons of My Lai were learnt, and the steps to take to insure nothing alike these events would ever take place in the world again. Cardiovascular, Respiratory And Energy System D1 outline the relationships between the cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems before, during and after a sporting activity Scenario: Mo Farah 5km Run Cardiovascular system changes Respiratory system changes Use of the three energy systems Before race Before the race the cardiovascular system stays the same as there is no physical activity going on. The heart rate is the same. An averages person s heart rate can range from sixty to one hundred beats per minute, Mo Farah s heart rate is thirty three beats per minute. The heart will start to work harder and will deliver oxygenated blood to the muscles via arteries, capillaries and the veins. The blood is received from the body and it goes into the right atrium and here the blood is filtered and is passed on to the right ventricle. The blood then goes to the lungs where the deoxygenated blood becomes oxygenated. The blood then goes back to the heart by the left atrium and it then goes into the left ventricle, the left ventricle will give a bigger contraction as it is going to the body. This system is repeated many times. The arteries and veins become bigger so more blood can pass through. Stroke volume and cardiac output will increase. Stroke volume will increase by 170ml. cardiac output will increase by 35L. During the race the respiratory system is working hard to deliver oxygenated blood to the muscles. Gaseous exchange takes place and becomes faster as it is more common during exercise. This will allow more oxygen into the blood stream which will get to the muscles quicker. The inspiration movement becomes harder and faster and this allows more oxygen to be breathed in. Expiration becomes quick during physical activity. The nasal cavity will increase the temperature of the air that is being inhaled and it will filter it to make sure that there is no dust. During the race Mo Farah uses the aerobic system because he is a long distance runner. As the race goes on he will start to use the energy that is stored in his muscles form the food that he has eaten. His heart rate and breathing rate start to speed up to deliver more oxygen to the muscles and get rid of carbon dioxide. The body will rely on this oxygen until the last part of the race where Mo will start to pick up the pace to either overtake someone or get a faster time. During this sprint he will use the ... • 7. Our Time Wideman Summary Do you have any idea how draining it is to be black in America? Rich or poor, educated or uneducated, famous or anonymous? Do you know what it feels like to be classified as ghetto and lazy because you come from or live in the hood? Better yet have you ever been called white washed because you seek a higher education, and are able to actually hold a conversation without saying the word umm in every other sentence? Do you have any idea? I do. Not everyone is a direct result of their environment and bad choices. In the essay Our Time Wideman questions the idea of black life in America and uses both he and his brother s story to explain how the choices we make in life are not always easy, and how sometimes others may not always understand the reasons behind them. Throughout the essay he uses the voices of his brother Robby, His mother, and Himself to express and convey the different perspectives through Robby s eyes. Widemen has to look past his own views ... That habit would destroy any chance of seeing my brother on his terms; and seeing him in his terms, learning his terms, seemed the whole point of learning his story. Mmr Vaccine And The Vaccine Vaccines; a more than spectacular development of science which has prevented countless numbers of diseases by giving one s body an immunity to a microorganism by stimulating the body s immune system and giving it the ability to recognize the pathogen as it enters the body to be more easily and readily destroyed. Autism, on the other hand, has not yet been fully linked back to a specific cause or reason. Because of this uncertainty, disgruntled parents have chosen to believe ideas with no scientific backing behind them besides what discredited scientist Wakefield said in a paper linking the MMR vaccine to autism along with some celebrities following Jenny McCarthy s Anti Vaccination Movement. This issue holds controversial value because of all of the parents whom refuse to vaccinate their children putting them at risk for the diseases that the vaccine is supposed to prevent. All of this is due to the one doctor who was bribed by a lawyer company four hundred thousand euros to bad mouth vaccinations to give them a case against it in a lawsuit. This lost him his medical license and even still is believed to this very day by a large group of people. This topic is talked about on the internet quite often and it s typically a debate between parents and doctors with little to no reasoning behind the parents perspective. Most procedures were simple and easy but that doesn t necessarily mean they can t prevent infections. The doctors who took orders from God ranked higher than the men who performed the surgeries with hope and skill but they lacked knowledge to help the patient. Singapore provides a perfect environment for breeding and has an ongoing battle with dengue. The problem we face now with the population growth of the Aedes mosquitos is that the greater the population of the mosquito, the higher the risk of dengue fever. Some other benefits are that it is a healthy application, which creates a relatively safe environment free from mosquitos. Although there are benefits, the disadvantages are that it is only applied to specific areas and cannot completely eradicate the mosquito. According to a study made in 2005 by the Singapore Medical Association, the usual chemical fogging in natural environment was ineffective in breaking the reproductive lifecycle by elimination gravid female aedes mosquitos (Chua, K. B). Although this is only one experiment, breaking the female reproductive cycle is considered vital in controlling and ultimately eradicating the aedes mosquito. Other disadvantages to fogging include, the fact that when uncontrolled it can contain diesel and insecticides that can sometimes be toxic for humans, domestic animals and wildlife. An additional reason as to why some thermal fogging is bad, is that pesticides exposed in an animals habitat can lead to Biomagnification. Biomagnification is the increase of a toxic substance, in this case insecticides in an organisms tissue as it goes up the food chain or water course etc. This affects the health of the living organism and eventually will corrupt the food chain as all the organisms in the specific food chain die out. • 12. Cultural Revoluation in China One of the most significant changes occurred in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. During the revolution itself, China was virtually cut off from the rest of the world in a form of extreme cultural protectionism (Hong, 1998, p.2). There was a severe lack of cultural imports during the Cultural Revolution, regardless of whether they were industrial or cultural imports. However, under Deng Xiaoping s leadership, an era of reform began in China. The nation began to open itself up politically and economically, leading to widespread importation of foreign products during the 1980s. Some of the complexities of Chinese media start to emerge during this period, particularly in the interaction between global and local forces. The importation of Western goods is a combination of both internal and external factors. From a global or external standpoint, factors include the popularity of Western products, the rise of global trade, and worldwide technological development. On the other hand, internal factors deal more with changes in government intervention, new media policies, and shifts in the makeup of society itself (Hong, 1998, p.3). With the opening up of China in the 1980s, the country soon became one of the biggest buyers in the global television programming market. Massive importation soon led to imitation, as can be seen in the importation and imitation of telenovelas. In this case, it was specifically the impact of the global product being consumed in a local market that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One widely known Iron Age sword is the Hispanic Sword, more commonly known as the Gladius. The Gladius was constructed of steel and was made for thrusting and slashing. The conventional tariffs were taxes charged on imported products to raise money for agencies that looked after goods and individuals entering America ( Politics in the Gilded Age ). On the other hand, the protective tariff was introduced to so as to govern industries and businesses in America. As a result, high tariffs ensured that producers competed on fair grounds with foreign products, as they raised the price of imported goods, and, therefore, made American products more attractive. From Grandeur to Arrogance Walt Whitman s poem, To a Locomotive in Winter and Emily Dickinson s I Like to See It Lap The Miles are two different poems about the same subject, the steam engine. Where Whitman uses solely free verse, Dickinson s poem more closely follows standard writing practices, with very structured line breaks. Another key difference in these works is the speech they use; Whitman uses old English laden with thee and thy, whereas Dickinson uses fairly modern terminology. • 20. The Sociology Of A Commercial Airline Pilot Essay This assignment focuses on analyzing the sociology of a commercial airline pilot s job and the working environment in this increasingly influential sector. An airline pilot carries great responsibility and their job comes with a magnitude of risks. It is both a physically and mentally demanding career choice that requires one to remain calm under pressure whilst operating in a different time zone and unpredictable weather conditions, as well as having to meet the health requirements such as perfect vision and coordination (to name a few). Commercial aviation is one of the world s biggest sectors and so the magnitude of research is immense, however the aim of this research assignment is to focus on tensions and trends surrounding the occupation of commercial airline pilots; such as gender inequality and stereotypes, as women continue to face gender barriers due to the industry being dominated by males since the heyday of the aviation sector (Germain, M., Herzog, M., Hamilton, P., 2012). Additionally the stresses surrounding the unconventional work environment, as airline employees tend to work on eight to fifteen hour shifts, however on occasion flight delays may require them to exceed the length of the shift (Tourigny, Vishwanath Wang, 2010). This unpredictability in scheduling policies may contribute to an increased level of job as well as family related stress, even burnouts in some cases, which impacts on the well being of employees. Israel has acknowledged these claims during peace talkts, and has offered to allow a set number of Palestinians to return to Israel and would be given some form of compensation for the loss of the refugees property. This solution is not acceptable to palestine really, and more negotiation is crucial to finding a complete and lasting peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. There are several options for the Palestinian refugees and where they can take their permanent place of residence. • 23. Social Democrats And Neo Liberals Both social democrats and neo liberals claim to support a free society. This essay will discuss how and why their visions of freedom diverge. This essay will focus on the social vision of social democracy and neo liberalism, as freedom is subject to this vision. The social vision involves the society and its values. What kind of society does the ideology want and how do they want to achieve this kind of society? This essay will discuss the social democratic vision of freedom, the neo liberal vision of freedom and will then argue how and why their visions diverge. As a hybrid ideology, social democracy took shape around the mid twentieth century, resulting from the tendency among western socialist parties not only to adopt parliamentary strategies, but also to revise their socialist goals. In particular, they abandoned the goal of abolishing capitalism and sought instead to reform or humanize it. Being based on a compromise between the market and the state, social democracy lacks a systematic underlying theory and is, arguably, inherently vague. This revisionist socialism has been primarily concerned with social justice, a just or fair distribution of wealth in society (Heywood 2012, pp. 125 129). In contrast with many liberals, social democrats believe that freedom has financial and social preconditions. It is not only about securing negative freedoms, but ensuring what is called positive freedom . Freedom must be legally ensured and effectively guaranteed. Similarly ... Importance Of A Setting In The Father, By Thomas King Importance of a Setting In literature, a story s setting not only creates conflict, but it may also determine the choices that characters ultimately make, affecting the complications the story may have. The setting contributes to the plot of three short stories that have been read in class. In The Father, written by Hugh Garner, one setting is a graveyard that symbolizes a relationship in the plot. Throughout Borders, by Thomas King, the setting of a border dividing Canada and the US is obvious with it s symbolism of detachment that is a reoccurring theme in the plot. Alden Nowlan s, the fall of a city, uses the setting of an attic in contribution to the plot to represent repressed emotional issues the characters have. A setting introduces details that may not have otherwise been there, creating depth. The graveyard setting in The Father contributes to the plot by symbolizing the collapse the antagonist caused to his relationship with his son. The father was at his son s boy scout banquet when he caved into his vice, alcohol, which caused him to create a scene at the banquet. This scene essentially killed his relationship with his son. The idea that students learn more by doing something active than by simply watching and listening has long been known to both cognitive psychologists and effective teachers (Bransford, et. al., 2000) and cooperative learning is by its nature an active method. Beyond that, cooperation enhances learning in several ways. Weak students working individually are likely to give up when they get stuck; working cooperatively, they keep going. Strong students faced with the task of explaining and clarifying material to weaker students often find gaps in their own understanding and fill them in. Students working alone may tend to delay completing assignments or skip them altogether, but when they know that others are counting on them, they are motivated to do the work in a timely manner. This study is an opportunity to enhance the researcher s knowledge of cooperative learning and examine the effect of cooperative learning groups in promoting a deeper understanding of the Grade 7 mathematics curriculum. • 28. The First Chapter Of Anselm s Argument The first chapter of Anselm s Monologian focuses on Anselm s argument that there is something that is the best, the greatest, the highest, of all existing things. It is through this unknown something that all things possess their goodness. According to the argument he puts forth, the goodness of things in this world must be caused and must therefore stem from one thing that is good, or from many. If goods can be comparable as goods, it follows that there must be some general and unified way of regarding their goodness, or the source of their goodness. However, if many causes have their goodness in common, it is through this goodness that they cause good things. Ergo, there must be a common source. In either case, whether the cause is one or many, a single, unitary source of goodness is indicated. Anselm argues that this source of all goodness is not good because of something else, but is itself goodness. The proofs for Anselm s argument are as follows: Whenever various things are said to be good in greater, lesser, or equal degree, either a) different good s are good through different things, or b) there is some one thing through which they are all good. Anselm s argument supports option b. He purports that there are infinite goods, which can be experienced by the senses and identified through reason. Hence, there is some one thing through which all goods are good, and that through which all goods are good is a great good. Furthermore, that through which all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through them we can hope to gain a better and more well rounded look into the life one of the most loved, and reviled, men in recent history. To begin, let us take a look at Napoleon s letters to his immediate family. Letter 71 is addressed to his sister Pauline, who in 1803 had married into an Italian nobleman s family. In this letter, Napoleon expresses his love for his sister, and wishes her nothing but happiness, showing a tender and brotherly side not often associated with the conquering emperor. Millions of people all over the world depend on seafood heavily as a primary source of food. Americans alone consumed as much as 15.8 pounds of seafood per person in 2009 (NOAA). This is a lot of fish. In fact, it is so much that many populations of fish are going extinct. At this particular rate according to National Geographic, scientist predict that the earth is expected to lose all of its current fisheries by the year 2048 (Roach). The overfishing of our oceans leads to unmanageable practices that will eventually cause many species of fish to become extinct. According to National Geographic, overfishing dates back to the 1800s when humans killed off massive amounts of whale population to retrieve blubber for lamp oil (Roach). Similarly, Atlantic cod, herring, and California s sardines, were also fished to the brink of extinction by the mid 1900s. Theses cases were extremely harmful to the ecosystems food chain. To counter these losses, the United States passed the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (NOAA). This law made it illegal for foreign countries to fish within 200 nautical miles of the United States shoreline. This would make it easier to manage illegal fishing. Congress also established eight regional councils with representation from the coastal states and fishery stakeholders. Their jobs were to come up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. A Short Note On The Uses And Functions Of A Server On... BIND in Linux BIND (Berkeley Internet name domain) is the most commonly used DNS (domain name system) server on the Internet, and it is the defacto standard on Linux and other Unix like operating systems. DNS is the name resolution (i.e., translation) system that permits users to locate computers on a network by using their domain name rather than their IP addresses. IP addresses, which form the basis of addressing on the Internet and most other networks, each can contain as many as 12 digits under the currently mainstream IPv4 addressing scheme (or as many as 32 hexadecimal digits under the next generation IPv6 addressing scheme). It can be difficult for humans to remember such addresses, but it is relatively easy for them to remember domain names, which typically use alphabetic characters and consist of words, abbreviations or acronyms. BIND provides an openly redistributable reference implementation of the major components of the DNS, including a DNS server (called named), a DNS resolver library and tools for verifying the proper operation of the DNS server. The resolver library is a collection of functions written in the C programming language that provides hostname to IP address and IP address to hostname lookup services.BIND was originally written at University of California at Berkeley (UCB) as a graduate student project under a grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration (DARPA). Throughout Barn Burning I read about how the snopes family is viewed by the people around them. With my thought of how you can be very loyal to your Blood but instantaneously change your mind and possibly backstab each other, which in Barn Burning this is a questioned to be asked as if Sarty is considered BackStabbing or doing the right thing. The phrase Blood is thicker than water is a very questionable phrase which I have applied to help me furthermore explain about loyalty. However, from the point after his childhood all the way up to middle adulthood he was noticeably behind in socioemotional development. For instance, in early adulthood he had to stay in abandoned properties because he was homeless. During this time, he moved from the hectic city of London to the country in Scotland where he found himself and eventually found a vocation he loved. He said that his formal education never prepared him for real life and that s why he was a failure for all those years until he was able to actually experience life and grow as a social being. • 50. The Effects Of Air Pollution In The San Joaquin Valley Further, the valley s bad air quality is deteriorated by the geographical location and the weather. The physical location of the valley makes the area prone to elevated temperatures during the summer, often causing wild fires, hazards and long droughts. The San Joaquin Valley is a basin that is formed by the three surrounding mountains, which trapes air inside the basin, making it hard for air currents to circulate and thus causes the accumulation of air pollutants. The air particulates that are trapped lead to a thermal inversion forming a warm air layer which further intensifies the trapping effect (Berg, 2011). The geographical location of the valley is one of the factors that cannot be simply changed, but alternate methods of regulating emissions should be put in place to reduce the effects. Although the valley is no longer considered to be in a drought, the effects of it from three years ago still affect the area. During the drought, the accumulation of particulate matters increased substantially which combined with the lack of rain, put a halt to the natural elimination of PM (Caiola, 2015). Although the geographical disadvantages cannot be changed, it should be considered when planning to reduce the effects of air pollution in the valley.
