Tomkey Family By David Sedaris
In the first few paragraphs of David Sedaris memoir, the author is forced to realize that some
people live different realities than he does. Upon learning that his new neighbors, the Tomkey
family, have very different views on modern technology than most of first world society, he grows
curious of them. The way the neighborhood reacts to this situation has a lot to say about how
society tolerates other opinions and beliefs. Observation of their reactions shows how they feel
more distant and uncomfortable towards the Tomkey family. David s own curiosity could be
explained by his new lifestyle change, considering the narrator transitioned from a very secluded
neighborhood to a much more cramped city lifestyle. When Sedaris learns that his new neighbors
were definitely much more diverse than his family, he begins to question their beliefs. He then
starts to spend a lot of time around their house. During nighttime, he gets much closer. By watching
the family through their window, he learns how the family acts during different activities
throughout the day. Eventually, Sedaris is able to observe the Tomkey children during school.

Along with the purchase of their boat came their absence, especially around Halloween. Because
of their absence, the Tomkey family decides to trick or treat after Halloween concludes, which
proves problematic to Sedaris and his sisters even though they have an apologetic mindset. The
Tomkey family arrives on their doorstep in full costume with the famous three words almost
guaranteed to get you candy. Unfortunately, it was the beginning of November, so the Sedaris
home was totally rid of candy except for a few Halloween bags previously earned by the

Analysis Of English Tense And Aspect
Analyzing English tense and aspect is presented with the idea that it has temporal relations within a
sentence. The reference points are used by the terminal and initial points of real time events. There
is also two hypothetical times: (Dalrymple pg. 68): the perfect time (that is pertaining to the
perfect aspect) and the progressive (which is during time). When continuing analysis of tense and
aspect, it requires to identify if the relationships will or will not substantiate among time and
events. For instance if I say Ken ate a frozen dinner, it can be established that this sentence is past
tense, and it includes that the time of this main event which is eating a frozen dinner precedes the
time of statement within this sentence. In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examples: (note: S stands for speech time. R for reference time. E for event time.) These examples
will provide a visual as to what was explained above.
Present Tense: E, R, S I am in California.
Past Tense: E, R......S I was in California when I saw her.
Past Perfect: E....R....S I had been in California when I saw her.
Future Perfect: S....E....R I will have been to California when is see you next.
It can be seen from these classifications of tenses above that the relative tenses and the reference
time are split apart(this is what the use of the periods are for to demonstrate the time splits).
Another thing to analyze is that only in the future perfect tense does speech time occurs first in the
sentence.
In addressing the past perfect tense, the lecture states that the role of the past perfect is backshifting
in the sequence of tense which is why I represented the time split from event time, reference time
and speech time apart us such.
Other examples offered: He said that he preferred the darker cigars. (past tense=present tense) He
said that he had selected the darker cigar. ( past perfect= present tense)
These examples display the ideal of backshifting. Both instances of these sentences are in the past in
time, however they can be interpreted as an event currently happening now.
The lecture from the University of Colorado also offers this analogy to better understand aspect
versus tense:

Professional, Ethical Legal Issues in Nursing Practice
Singapore Nursing Board Standards for Nursing Practice defines that Nurses/midwives have the
professional responsibility and accountability to uphold
Standard of care and to contribute to their dissemination, interpretation and development despite
medical advances, social and demographic changes and an increasingly complex healthcare
delivery system that challenge the ability of nurses to provide safe quality of care. Should nurses
fail to uphold certain standards and by doing so cause harm or injury to the client, they would be
held liable in the tort of negligence. Description of a practical situation which raised ethical issues:

Harris (2005) defines autonomy is the ability of a person to control their own life and to some

not have a chance to refuse or decide regarding his treatment plan he received.

Non maleficence means to do no harm and negligence occur when the nurse owed a duty of care

and its staff owe a duty of care to patient (Tay, 2001). Non maleficence is the principle in health

The Fundamental Principle Of Concept Of Parsimony
The most fundamental principle of behaviourism is the concept of parsimony. The law of
parsimony, which can be known in other variations as the (Occam s Razor or Morgan s canon )
defines that explanations should In fact account for the greatest number of facts or observations,
with the fewest number of principles or assumptions. (Underwood, 1957) When studying
behaviourism, the Key concepts found are the stimulus and response also known as the (S R)
equation. This involves classical and operant conditioning. These stimuli s allow the greatest
possibility to manipulate independent variables in order to study the dependent variable. The
measurable change in environment means that any event or situation may have some subsequent
changes in behaviour to reinforce learning. Theorist John Broadus Watson (1913) was the first
behaviourist to coin the ideas around behaviourism. He used contiguity to explain ideas and said
that practice could strengthen ones learning. His approach to behaviourism was very
parsimonious, using only a strict few simples to explain a variety of phenomena, e.g. The Little
Albert experiment . The idea round the experiment was that by pairing a white rat (CS) with a
loud bang (UCS) one could induce fear (UCR) which is known as classical conditioning. With
these observable events Watson s was able to influence many theorists and their contributions to
behaviourism. Firstly I refer to Skinner s work on

Knight Errantry
The Canon, the Don, and Sancho Panza all have different views on the subject of chivalric
romances and knight errantry. While the Don and the Canon represent the extreme ends of
opinions, Sancho bridges the gap between the two. The Canon believes that books are completely
unrealistic. He poses the question, how can the reader find joy in such absurdities? The Canon
sees these novels in a strict black and white view. He acknowledges that fiction does have a place
in literature, however the Canons says that, These books provide subject matter with which a good
intelligence could express itself... (441). The Canon prides himself in being highly intelligent and
feels that only unintelligent would be able to find pleasure in such blatant lies.... Show more content

He is not able to dissociate fiction from reality. In the eyes of Don, the novels of knight errantry
serve as a guide for how to live. The Don believes that the knights are role models that all able
people should strive to live by. It is the utmost honor to live the life of a knight errant. He
defends all accounts of knight errantry, and if he happens upon someone who disagrees with his
opinions, he disregards them because he assumes they are not a knight errant and, therefore,
would not understand. When the Canon defamed his precious books the Don replied, I consider
that it is you who are out of your senses and under some spell, for you have taken it upon yourself
to utter such blasphemies again what has been so well received in the world and so widely
accepted as the truth that anyone who denies it, as you do, deserves the same punishment that you
say you inflict on books that annoy you when you read them (453). The Don then continues to
combine historic facts with those of his chivalric fantasy in his explanation to the Canon of
reliability of the novels. Don Quixote truly cannot separate fact from fiction. In the truest sense of
insanity, he believes that the novels of night errantry with their absurd claims are not only plausible,
but also

Activity Based Costing And How It Works
I chose to write about activity based costing. I chose to write this paper because I wanted to
know more about activity based costing and how it works. According to our text, activity based
costing (ABC) has received a lot of attention since the 90 s. ABC has a lot of more details and can
be more complicated than all the other costing methods, however it s more accurate. Costing
systems are information systems. They require a specific type of information such as direct labour
hours and units produced, to be of value. It is from the input data that product costsand other
information are determined according to the specific costing system defined methodology. The
results obtained would depend on the costing system used, since the same input data could be used
in different ways. In this case the traditional costing system or an activity based costing system
(Marx.) A costing system should provide information to help minimize waste, but should not be
wasteful in itself. In other words, the resources required to design, implement and maintain a
costing system should be less than the benefit derived from the use of the system (Marx.) Activity
based costing (ABC) assigns manufacturing overhead costs to products in a more logical manner
than the traditional approach of simply allocating costs on the basis of machine hours. Activity
based costing first assigns costs to the activities that are the real cause of the overhead. It then
assigns the costof those activities only to

Essay On Muscle Injury
You often hear about athletes who are unable to play their sport due to a pulled hamstring. In fact,
a pulled hamstring is one of the most common muscle pulls or muscle injury. Your hamstrings are a
group of three muscles that help extend your legs at the hip and flex them at the knee. A pulled
hamstring is a strain or tear in the muscles or tendons.
To understand what causes a hamstring injury you have to know how muscles work. All muscles
work in pairs to perform a task. One set of muscles contracts to exert force while the other set of
muscles relaxes. The hamstring muscles located at the back of the thigh, work with the quadriceps
muscle group in the front of the thigh. When you want to bend your leg, the hamstring muscles
contract and the quadriceps muscles relax. Conversely, when you want to straighten your leg, the
quadriceps muscles contract and the hamstring muscles relax. ... Show more content on

This frequently happens with the hamstring muscles. The quadriceps muscles are usually much
more powerful, so the hamstring can become fatigued faster. A fatigued muscle cannot relax as
easily when its opposing muscle contracts, leading to strains.
Muscle strains are overuse injuries that result when the muscle is stretched without being properly
warmed up. An injury to the hamstring is usually readily apparent. Mild strains may involve
simple, uncomfortable tightening of the muscle. More severe injuries may result in a sharp pain
in the back of the thigh, usually in full stride. A rupture or tear may leave you unable to stand or
walk, muscles may be tender to the touch and painful to stretch your leg. Within a few days after a
tear the area may appear very bruised.
Remember RICE and you will know the immediate treatment protocol for many sports related
injuries, including hamstring pulls or

The National Survey on Drug use and Health found in 2014, 11. 4 percent of adolescents aged 12
to 17 (2. 8 million adolescents) had an MDE during the past year (SAMSHA). The pressures and
struggles of being an adolescent can only be exacerbated by major depressive episodes or even a
diagnosis of major depressive disorder. Adolescents require support for their experiences and
attention needs to be brought to their trials. . Major depression not only affects adolescents social
and academic lives, but influence, directly, their actions and decisions as well. Adolescents can
partake in numerous actions to cope with their feelings of depression such as taking drugs. The
National Survey on Drug use and Health found that, Youths with a past year MDE in 2014 also
were more likely than those without an MDE to be users of marijuana, nonmedical users of
psychotherapeutics, users of inhalants, and users of hallucinogens in the past year (SAMSHA).
The survey shows that MDE can put adolescents at a vulnerability to participate in risky
behaviors. The world of drugs can be an outlet to deal with depression. This outlet though may
even lead to a struggle with the very substances used to cope with their depression. The National
Survey on Drug use and Health found as well that, An estimated 340,000 adolescents aged 12 to

Equilibrium Reactions and Le Chatelier s Principle
Lab: 5
Experiment:13
Pre Lab The purpose of this experiment is to observe an equilibrium reaction counteracting
changes to it s system all in accordance to Le Chatelier s principle. An equilibrium reaction can be
pushed toward products or reactant based on changes in temperature or concentration. The
reversibility of reaction will also be looked at.
Pre Lab questions
1. The concentrations of products and concentrations of reactants remain constant but both
reactions are still going on, just at the same rate.
2. Le Chatelier s principle when an equilibrium has been established in a system and is altered, the
systems will counteract the change.

If the equilibrium lies to the right, the solution is basic and will be yellow. The first solution turns
pink because the HCl is a strong acid and methyl orange is pink in acidic solutions. The
equilibriums shift to the left side showing an increase in the amount of acid in the solution that is
why the color changes to pink. The concentration of the solution then turns yellow because NaOH
is a base and turns yellow in a basic solution. The equilibrium is shifted to the right when the NaOH
is added.

Phenolphthalein is a weak acid and does not fully dissociate ergo it creates an equilibrium.
When the HCl is added, the equilibrium is to the left, The concentration of the anions is too low
for the pink color to be observed. However, the NaOH is a strong base and makes the solution s
equilibrium shift to the right. The concentration of the anion becomes sufficient for the pink
color to be observed. 4. Both test tubes appear red with the acetic acid with the methyl orange.

The United Open Door Immigration Policy
As tension in Syria and the surrounding regions intensifies, more and more refugees are fleeing to
Europe seeking asylum; however, the countries they are entering are experiencing many adverse
side effects; such as, social unrest, sexual assaults, and terrorist attacks. It is unacceptable for the
children in these nations to have to grow up in a nation they once called home and felt safe in but
now no longer has that feeling. The same argument could be made for the refugees and that is why
the current open door immigrationpolicy that Angela Merkel has in effect must be remedied. The
goal of a refugeeis to escape war that they and their families can live safely without worry of
being killed. Not to change the ways of the nation they are entering and treat the locals with disdain
for their differences in ideology, dress, culture and even diet. The host nation of a large number of
refugees should not have to change their way of life to accommodate those seeking refuge. It
should be the other way around. Assimilation is the goal, not disintegration of native culture. A
policy which allows radical Muslims to immigrate into the country and then face punishment only
after the damage from their actions has been done is grossly illogical and insufficient for the
preservation of a nation s security. Preventative measures must be put in place.
The mass sexual assault that occurred in 2015 at New Year s Festivals in Germanysimply and
clearly demonstrate another symptom of the

originally the symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, a legendary asso (ace) of the Italian air force
during World War I, who painted it on the side of his planes. Baracca died very young on June
19, 1918, shot down after 34 victorious duels and many team victories; he soon became a
national hero. Baracca had wanted the prancing horse on his planes because his squad, the
Battaglione Aviatori , was enrolled in a Cavalry regiment (air forces were at their first years of
life and had no separate administration), and also because he himself was reputed to be the best

Evaluation Of A Good Asset Within An Organization
It is widely recognised in Business that the people are a valuable asset within an Organisation. If
employees are not performing at an effective level, then an Organisation s survival is at risk
(Huczynski Buchanan, 2013). It is a key responsibility for managers to ensure that performance
levels keep improving (Aguinis, Joo, Gottfredson, 2011). As a result, interventions such as
performance appraisal (PA) are used to align individual, team and organisational goals. Appraisal
has been a hot topic of discussion over the decades with research concluding that performance
appraisal does not always lead to improved performance (Smither, Reilly London, 2005; DeNisi
Kluger, 2000; Jawahar, 2010; Steelman Rutkowski, 2004). Feedback is postulated to be
moderator of performance (Kluger DeNisi, 1996, DeNisi Kluger, 2000). This phase of PA is
used to establish goals to increase performance, engagement and job satisfaction (Aguinis, 2009).
However, research suggests that feedback can have the opposite effect (Kluger DeNisi, 2000;
Steel Rutkowski, 2004). However, most of the research mentioned above focuses on weakness
based performance appraisal (WBPA). This theory focuses on where an employee is
underachieving and setting goals around these areas as a means of improving behaviour (Steelman
Rutkoski, 2004). More recently, a strengths based performance appraisal (SBPA) to appraisal has
been developed (Kluger Bouskila Yam, 2011). This approach focuses on intensifying

E-Commerce and the Global Market
Electronic commerce (e commerce) over the Internet is the fastest growing method for consumers
to conduct business. Less than ten years old and it already has radically altered the potential to
economic activities and the social environment. There are nearly 200 million Internet users
worldwide currently. Of these 200 million users, roughly 40 percent reside in the United States
(Styliano, A., Robbins, S. Jackson, P., 2003). E commerce currently affects large sectors such as
communications, banking and the retail industry. E commerce has also had an effect on the

There have been some negative effects on the economy due to the emergence of e commerce. It is
assumed that the availability of goods online should increase competition but this does not always
occur. Reputable companies who have majority control over their industry can sometimes maintain
high prices. Further, the Internet allows companies to obtain pricing information from their
competitors companies easily and allows them to react immediately to external changes. Company
monitoring can also work against consumers. Since other companies can quickly change their
price, the original company would not make any extra revenue from increased sales (LaRose,
R.,2000). There is also the issue of product differentiation. Increased competition due to ecommerce
allows companies to better create products especially for a certain target audience. This makes it
difficult for consumers to compare products and lessens the competition and keep prices high.
As electronic commerce expands it has a greater social impact. The social impact of e commerce is
characterized by the globalization of markets, the shift towards an economy based on knowledge
and information, and the growing prominence of technology in everyday life (Jones, B., n.d.). As e
commerce expands, there becomes a greater need to improve education about the business and
technical side of e commerce. Traditional educational institutions will have to

The Newell Company was looking for a new corporate strategy that would allow them to have the
opportunity to grow through an expansion of their markets. CEO at the time was John
McDonough at Newell and there were a few acquisitions that contributed to strategic steps in
expanding the company also known as their The Newellization Process . Newell s focus was to
acquire more than thirty major businesses within the next twenty years. A merger with
Rubbermaid, would allow Newell to gain market share value to surpass $10 billion and that would
be critical for Newell s reach of capitalization in the market. Rubbermaid at the time was known for
their success in product innovation, their brand equity and significant amount of shelf space in

fill rates, and their product costs too much. They show you a new product line and then tell you
they can ship only a third of what you want (Montgomery). With Rubbermaid s reputation

Symbolism And The Wizard Of Oz
According to the Library of Congress The Wizard of Oz is the most popular movie of all time.
The film was based on a best selling book written by L. Frank Baum. When film studios began
reconsidering the fantasy genre, they began to see the potential in The Wizard of Oz (Stillman
Scarfone, pg. 21). The film exceeded all potential by becoming one of the most loved movies in
America. The Wizard of Ozis the most influential American film because of its innovative
technology and creativity, the use of symbolism to show the morals and character of America, and

Objectives Of Micro Teaching
A teacher training technique which is known as micro teaching is practiced all over the world.
This technique helps the teachers to improve their teaching skills. The history of microteaching
goes back to the early and mid 1960 s, when Dwight Allen and his colleagues (Bush, McDonald,
Acheson and many more) from the Stanford University developed a training program aimed to
improve verbal and nonverbal aspects of teacher s speech and general performance. According to
D.W.Allan (1966), Micro teachingis a scaled down teaching encounter in class size and class time .
Micro teaching enhances the presentation and reinforcement skills which further aid in real time
teaching experience. During teaching in real classroom, it is not only a simple matter of
transferring the knowledge from one to another. Actually it is a complex process that directly
influences the process of learning. Quality of a teacher is estimated on how much the students
understand from his/her teaching. Before entering in class, a teacher should know about teaching
skills. Actual classroom cannot be used to acquire primary teaching skills. Students learning
process will be affected if new teachers make the classroom an experimental place. The main
objectives of micro teaching as stated by Otsupius (2014) are that it helps teacher trainees to learn
and practice new teaching... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Mayflower Rebellion
The first Pilgrims in America set sail from England on the Mayflower in September 1620. More
than 100 people were aboard the ship, many of them seeking religious freedom in the New
World. In November the ship landed on the shores of Cape Cod which in present day would be
called Massachusetts. The intended destination was near the Hudson River in Virginia, an already
established colony. They sent out a search party toward the end of December to look for the group
of passengers but the pilgrims had landed at Plymouth Harbor by mistake.
Originally there was another ship that set sail along with the Mayflower called the Speedwell. The
smaller vessel was not able to make the journey so it returned to port by September. A few
important people travelled on the Mayflower including Myles Standish, a soldier who became the
military leader of the new colony. Also, William Bradford whom founded the Plymouth Colonyand
was the leader of the Separatist congregation. The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 men
while they were still on the Mayflower. The document would become the foundation of the new
colony s government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How do Mrs. Ryan and the priest influence Jackie s attitude to religion?
First Confession is the story of how Jackie, a seven year old boy, makes his first confession
before his first communion. The story takes place in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century
and is based on O Connor s own childhood. It is interesting to see how two opposite characters,
Mrs. Ryan and the priest, can influence so much the kid s thoughts: Mrs. Ryan instills him fear
while the priest helps him to overcome this fear.

What Is The Meaning Of I Taste A Liquor Never Brewed
Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 in Massachusetts. To this day, she is considered to be one of
the most influential American poets of all time. I taste a liquor never brewed has been said to
be Emily Dickinson s best poem she ever wrote. It is said to be her best poem because of the
complexity of the poem. She wrote with an obvious rhyme scheme and expresses superb imagery
throughout her poem. This poem also shows how early editors diminished the strength of
Dickinson s verse (Forman, Robert J.). The third and sixteenth lines of her poem, I taste a liquor
never brewed has been changed multiple time by editors throughout the years to what they
believed fit better than what she had written originally lines. The first change was the third line
with The first would substitute Vats upon the Rhine for Frankfort Berries and the next change was
with the sixteenth lines with Leaning against the sun for Manzanilla come! (Dorinson, Zahava
Karl). Overall, this is definitely her greatest poem she has ever written because of the vivid
imagery and apparent rhyme scheme. Dickinson s poems often do not have a title. The only

The Effects Of Binge Drinking On Teens
For my research project I decided to look at binge drinking in teens. Binge drinking interested me
because so many teenagers drink alcohol when they go out and don t know what consequences it
has on the body. Binge drinking is the consumption of an unreasonable amount of alcohol in a short
period of time. I have chosen to research What are the psychological and physiological effects of
binge drinkingin teens? . I chose this question because I wanted to inform myself and other teens on
the effects of binge drinking. The research methods used throughout my research were internet
articles and a survey.
After researching what is binge drinking I found that it is the consumption of a large amount of
alcohol on a single occasion or drinking at a constant rate over a number of days or even weeks.
Binge drinking is risky business. The powerful liquid known as alcohol has major effects on a
person. Alcohol has the ability to wreck a person s life and change it permanently. Alcohol impairs
judgement making it easy for someone to do or say something that he or she will regret. For a
male to binge drink he has to drink 5 or more standard drinks in a 2 hour period. For a female it is
only 4 or more standard drinks in a 2 hour period. This could vary of the weight and age of the
person. When conducting my survey I asked the participants how many drinks they believe
classified as binge drinking.

Why I Am A Bad Writer
From the time I was in about fourth or fifth grade I began to dislike certain subjects in school. I
loathed everything about writing assignments. I didn t write at home before that the thought of
writing for myself never really occurred to me. I hated the deadlines the length requirements and I
just tried to get them done and had no intention of writingwell because I told myself I was a bad
writer. I have never really known whether or not I truly am a bad writer. I continued these habits of
just writing something down to get a decent gradeall throughout school. I usually got an okay
grade because I followed the prompt closely and did the minimum amount of work for the paper.
I didn t start the assignments until either the night before it was due. As I got older I would type
the paper on my phone in school that day then print it off in the library moments before class. I
continued writing in that awful ritual of complacency until the end of 11th grade. We had to
write a paper on The Great Gatsby a book that I never read. I read couple of notes on the internet
and then wrote the paper and never reread it or edited it all. I did my usual routine and followed the
prompt and turned my paper in. When I got my paper back I was shocked to find out I didn t get
even a half decent grade I was given a zero. I went to my teacher after class to speak with him
about the grade and he told me I got the grade that I deserved. He said I was lazy and never tried to

Comparison Of Betty Neuman s Systems Model
Comparison Assignment
Betty Neuman s systems model is a systems theory that emphasizes the importance of the complex
and ongoing interactions among all subsystems of an individual (Hood, 2014, p.128). Neuman s
systems model focuses on decreasing external, internal, and environmental factors that could
adversely affect an individual. Furthermore, Neuman s system model explains that these stressors
can cause a specific response and a unique reaction that consequently wears off the defense lines
that protect the person s inner core and preserve their health and well being (Hood, 2014, p.131).
In contrast, Callista Roy s adaption model is a stress/adaption theory based on the premise that
human response can adapt and change in terms of accommodation (Hood, 2014, p. 133). Roy s
adaption model explains that human response to stimuli is dictated by the individual s adaptive
modes, type of stimuli they were confronted by, level of adaption, and ability to cope (Hood,
2014). Moreover, as Hood (2014) states, a person s adaption level is determined by its response to
a combination of focal, contextual, and residual stimuli.

tertiary prevention (Hood, 2014, p. 168) with the aim to fortify the person s lines of defense.

to reduce stressors, they are specific to the improving adaption modes and optimizing adaption

Many of the smaller surrounding states saw the successes of the customs union and so decided to
join themselves. From then on many large states joined. The customs union became known as the

The Zollverein was a great success and was a large step to the unification of Germany. The
systems of weights and measures was homogenised within the states of the Zollverein. The major
differences between the states were now becoming not so apparent. Due to the abolition of
customs barriers and the currency no longer varying from each state trade increased between the
countries. This did not occur however without the help of the railways. Lines were extended
throughout the states of the Zollverein. Because of this, delegates were able to travel quickly and
efficiently to other states to agree trade treaties. Communication between the states increased
greatly and now not only were economic barriers broken down but also physical ones.
Communication to enable unity increased greatly through the railways. One economist described
the railway network as the firm girdle around the loins of Germany binding her limbs together into
a forceful and powerful body .
The Zollverein also aided in the unification of Germany as it increased feelings of one country in
other words, nationalism. The railways helped with the spread of German press. Now

Pericles Speech During The Peloponnesian War
During the first phase of the Peloponnesian War, Pericles was selected to make a speech to honor
those who had lost their lives in battle. His famous funeral oration covered many topics, such as
democracy, freedom, courage, and most of all the glory of Athens. This is best summed up in the
thesis of the speech, where Periclesencourages Athenians to realize how great Athens is and fall in
love with her. Pericles insists, When you realize her greatness, then reflect that what made her
great was men with a spirit of adventure, men who knew their duty, and men who were ashamed to
fall below a certain standard. However, much of what Pericles states is not the full truth of what
happened during the war. In his speech, Pericles exaggerates Athens military power, society, and

At first, all he wanted to do was isolate Jekyll and Hyde, but he had gotten addicted to the high

makes it interesting and meaningful.
The novel further proves that the inner devil is desperately trying to escape. The terminology
for Jekyll and Hyde could also be found in a dictionary. Such definitions can be found: (1) one
who has a quasi schizophrenic, alternating phases of pleasantness and unpleasantness (2) a
person having a split personality, one side of which is good and the other evil and (3) this phase
refers to a person who alternates between charming demeanor and extremely unpleasant behavior
. Sigmund Freud, a controversial psychiatrist with many questionable theories, described the
symptoms of schizophrenia as the Jekyll and Hyde syndrome . Jekyll and Hyde were two
opposite personalities that made up one person. Stevenson wrote his novel on the assumption
that man is made up of only two parts the good and the evil. In the novel, Mr. Hyde was depicted
as being ugly, disgusting, and much smaller than Dr. Jekyll himself. This was because his evil

Antonia, the main character wore jeans, black Converse, a spaghetti strap shirt that showed her
belly area, a high pony tail, hoop earrings, and spandex underneath her jeans. On the other hand, her
brothers, wore Nike sneakers, a hoodie, sweatpants, hats, and a bandana. This choice of costumes
really helped refocus the idea that Antonia is the Chicana adaptation of Antigone
Acting:
Antonia is a woman who will do anything for her loved ones even if that means puttieng her life is
on the line. Throughout the play, Si Mon Emmett demonstrates Antonia s strong character. The best
example of this is seen after intermission, when Antonia must faces her Nino after breaking the
rules for Terra, her deceased brother. In this scene, Si Mon Emmet keeps herself grounded and
defiant despite the proximity she has with the audience. With the use of her voice, energy, and
timing, Emmet acts with strength and presents her character well.
Conclusion:
Overall this new work, is fun and captivating. The ability to bring the audience into the Chicano
world and understand the struggle of its characters should be recognized. The choice of theatre
space, costumes, and actors are three of the many elements that help it stand out.

The Paradox Of Avatar
Movies create realities. As life tells the stories of each, each moulds the reality which he/she

three statements above this sentence. Avatar is a critical acclaimed hit when it released, spanning
dollars after dollars of sales and revenue. The question remains, what is the story of this movie?
As for these statements about Avatar, this blog would try to answer some key aspects of the film
through the set questions given by lecturer though not all questions will be answered. The first
question that will be answered is, where in the film do you see critiques evident of the current
state of the world in the characters, dialogue and content of the film? As clear water reflects the

They appear more highly evolved than the humans in their respect of the life and the energy

importance of each species as the balance nature. Relatively to humans, as exemplified in the film
and, at such case, the real world, people tend to abuse nature as it is nothing but a toy to play with.
As showed and explained, the humans plan to excavate unobtanium for their sake of survival.
Whereas excavation profits some, many suffer. When the environment is destroyed or defiled by

Do Public Subsidies For Professional Athletic...
Do public subsidies for professional athletic organizations benefit their local community?
Sports teams, or professional athletic organization, are extremely important institutions within a
city or region. They can help connect people with places, and through this loyalty, a sense of civic
pride can be seen. Furthermore, the multi billion dollar industry sports produces effects that can
impact individuals and communities. In recent years dozens of new sports stadiums have been built
throughout the country, with major funding coming from public subsidies. The aim of this paper is
to analyze the positive and negative impacts that come with these subsidies.
The issue at hand, however, is that power has shifted from the cities to the teams themselves.
Professional athletic organizations have started taking advantage of cities by threatening to relocate
unless they get public subsidies for expensive stadium renovations and construction. With this in
mind it is imperative to ask today s question: Do public subsidies for professional athletic
organizations benefit their local community? The way I plan on conducting research is through a
literary analysis, as I am a high school student with very few resources to gather large amounts of
primary data. The types of literature that will be in this paper will include studies, meta analysis,
news articles, and magazine articles. By gathering this information, I will be more equipped to
conduct more intensive research in the

In the bustling tedious suburban lives we face daily it s easy to forget the serene spell nature can
cast upon you. In the majestic creatures of the world such as tigers, wolves, wolverines, etc. we
reflect in the faces of our most loving and loyal companions. Bringing us closer to nature from the
comfort of our living rooms our pets can be our happiness, sadness, our strength and the warm love
we can come home to. Owning a pet is a rewarding feeling, it comes with its difficulties as well
as its treats. There is a certain joy that comes from growing and living with a furry companion,
one only found in the arms and embrace of a meow, a bark, a squeak, or a squawk etc. When I
was younger I had always loved and been fascinated by animals. In my spare time I would read
books and ask all kinds of questions on many different species to become more knowledgeable. I
watched many different kinds of documentaries on many different subjects, all in the name of
enlightening and feeding my thought for things unalike me. The mighty prowess of a big cat or the

George Gascoigne
In 1573, George Gascoigne published For That He Looked Not upon Her, a poem in which his
careful and methodical approach to the sonnet form is evident. Two years later, he published
Certayne Notes of Instruction on Making of Verse, which only further served to cement his
reputation as meticulous and deliberate with his choice of language and form every choice
Gascoigne makes is made with a purpose in mind. This is especially evident in For That He
Looked Not upon Her, wherein Gascoigne utilizes both the intentionally chosen sonnet form and
vivid imagery to develop his criticism of the classic sonnet in which the beloved s refusal of the
author only serves to make him more determined to pursue her. The sonnet form is typically one

In Gascoigne s metaphor, a mouse that had escaped a trap is unlikely to return, even if given
motivation to return to the trap and try for the food again (5 8). The idea of an tiny, innocent
animal representative of sonneteers caught in a trap which represents their beloved s chronic
rejection, is designed to engender feelings of sadness and pity in readers. Likewise, in
Gascoigne s second metaphor, it is improbable that a fly that has been burned by a flame would
approach any flame thereafter (9 12), once again inspiring compassion in the reader for the
sonneteers emotional pain. In more modern times, flies are seen as less unclean and disgusting
creatures than they were in the past, but in Gascoigne s day, that would not have been the case.
The same holds true for mice in Gascoigne s day, mice were seen as pests to be rid of at all costs.
No one would have sympathized with a mouse. So Gascoigne s argument changes contextually;
instead of creatures to be sympathized with, the mouse and fly and by extension the sonneteers are
simply nuisances to be rid

Human Nature And The Mind
Human Nature and The Mind Human nature and the mind have been studied for ages. As humans,
we tend to think, feel, and act in certain ways that are often elucidated by nature and evolution. In
fields such as Psychology, Philosophy, and Science, human nature and the mind have been
extensively studied to develop theories about why humans act, think, and feel that way that we do.
It is believed by some that humans are born a certain way by nature. There are three ways that
people tend to believe humans are born: naturally good, naturally evil, or neutral. A Chinese
philosopher named Mencius is an example of someone who believed that humans are born naturally
good. Mencius is believed to be the most important figure in the development of Confucianism,
right after Confucius himself. Mencius wrote Man s Nature Is Good in the year Circa 300 BCE.
This rhetorical piece argues Mencius s views on the nature of man. Mencius not only believed that
humans were born naturally good, but also that they, ...with proper training, could become perfect
(Austin 78). A Chinese scholar named Hsun Tzu believed almost the exact opposite of Mencius.
Although Hsun Tzu was a Confucian similarly to Mencius, he did not share the belief that humans
are born naturally good. Tzu actually wrote a piece titled Man s Nature Is Evil in which he explains
his argument. Tzu believed that humans need structure, and that ...strict discipline could make
human beings good despite their natural inclinations

Painting, Violet Persian Set With Red Lip Wraps By Dale...
The exhibition that focuses on contemporary artworks since 1960 will be small, containing only
two pieces. The pieces are both sculptures, Violet Persian Set with Red Lip Wraps by Dale Chihuly
and Nefertiti by Wendall Castle. The theme of the exhibition will be about the reimagining of the
exotic female form through abstract sculpturespecifically, in the round, free standing sculptures.
Both Chihuly s piece as well as Castle s fit this theme as they depict abstract forms that can be
interpreted as feminine. However, the pieces look radically different from one another and are
fairly abstract. One sculpture shows a strong and regal womanly form while the other could be
interpreted as the exact opposite. Both sculpture s in the exhibition can also be seen as being
inspired by the exotic and romanticized past. At a glance, Violet Persian set with red lip wraps is a
very abstract form with many different parts and pieces. There are coneshapes wrapped in thin
waved sheets of blown glass. It appears as though Chihuly uses cane working in his piece as
there are stripes of color throughout each layer. It measures approximately 2.5 feet by 2 feet by 2
feet and is made of twenty different sections of sculpted glass that must be disassembled and
reassembled every time it is moved. The outer wraps, like shells, gently wrap the glass shapes in
their folds. The interior sculptures take on the shapes of cones, trumpets and petals and are nestled
closely together. The sculpture can be

Psalm 49
With regard to its content Psalm 49 is, by and large, didactic in nature. It does not sound entirely
pessimistic, rather, it gives some practical and constructive instructions pertaining to a key
reality of life that one has to face, i.e., death. Importantly, Psalm 49 dissipates two types of fear,
i) the fear of enemies at the time of death (v 6) and ii) the fear of the wealthy and powerful who
think that they may have some merit at the time of death (v 17). The Wisdom teacher destroys the
fear factor but does not give an alternative that would explain why we should not fear. Perhaps the
whole wisdom tradition and all the wisdom literature teach us that wisdom is found in the
contemplation of the reverential fear of the Lord (Prov 1, 7; 9,

The Satirical Nature Of Tartuffe By Moliere
Wendy Ifenso Okpala
Dr Ress
WR 150
The Satirical Nature of Tartuffe The French play, Tartuffe, was written by Moliere in 1664. The
major theme in this play is exposing what is wrong in the religious society and Moliere uses
comedy to point out this out. This idea agrees with Highet, and Robert Corrigan s definition of a
satire. The first definition made by Highet is that a satire aims to expose what is wrong in our
society as Moliere tries to do with religious hypocrites. The second definition by Corrigan Robert
states that a satirists do not usually attack institutions, rather, they attack perversion of institutions
which ties back to Moliere s main point of this play. Although certain aspects of farce and comedy
are present in this play such as the nature of the characters used and the happy ending, we have to
remember Highet s idea in The Anatomy of Satire, where he explains that farce, which causes
unreasoning merriment is related to a satire. Moliere, whose original name was Jean Baptiste
Poquelin, always wrote about basic flaws seen around him, the catholic church being one of them.
He showed the troubles he had with the religious community through his characters. For example,
Tartuffethe religious hypocrite is constantly overlooked by Orgon, who is the head of the
household and his mother Madame Pernelle. However, Dorine the wise maid, and Cleante the
brother in law, are able to see what other community members usually ignore. Moliere incorporates
these ideas

The Operational Safety Management System
INTRODUCTION Any well designed safety program or system is only as effective as the day to
day ability of everyone in the organisation to rigorously follow procedures correctly and safely
every time. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009: p.147) This statement is based on organisational discipline
or each worker as having the self restraint to perform every task required.
Angiullo supports the statement by discussing the operational safety management system in three
core areas: leadership characteristics; well defined and followed management processes; and
maintenance of high standards. Organisations only fully conform to organisational discipline when
these three areas are effectively implemented within the organisation. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009).
This essay will discuss why it is believed to be an utopian statement by comparing the core areas
against the AS/NZ 4801:2001 Occupational health and safety management systems specification
with guidance for use and supporting literature.
LEADERSHIP CHARACTERISTICS
An organisation s managerial leadership and commitment is defined from the top levels and filters
through to the front line worker. Leadership inspires and motivates only when it is consistent. What
management do or do not do including providing resources, their personal actions or the method of
communication can motivate or demotivate workers (Cutchfield, Roughton 2014). It has been
identified that leadership language, behaviour and trustworthiness shapes the beliefs and

Comparing To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and To his Mistress Going to Bed by John
Donne
In recent times I have compared and contrasted two pieces of love poetry, both of which are
exceptionally lyrical and full of intellectual language that bring the poems alive with elaborated
metaphors that compare dissimilar things, as they Inare equally, yet somehow individually both
metaphysical poems. The first of these poems that I comprehended was To his Coy Mistress;
(written by Andrew Marvell during the 17th century), it reflects the epic of a man who is striving
to entice a unadulterated woman into going to bed with him; he does this by using a lot of
romantic flattery and surreal imagery, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps the most famous of Marvell s lyrics is To His Coy Mistress : Like many of Marvell s
best poems, it masks extraordinary subtlety and complexity beneath a surface of smooth and
deceptively simple octosyllabic couplets. It is, in fact, as perfect an example of the metaphysical
mode as anything by Donne and, for all its cool and witty tone, and passionate lyrics.
John Donne, (1572 1631) is considered the greatest of all metaphysical poets. Donne was educated
at Oxford, Cambridge and Lincoln s Inn. His works of this period, included some of his songs,
sonnets (written as late as 1617), problems and paradoxes, which consisted of cynical, realistic
and often sexual lyrics, essays and verse satires. Donne s court career was ruined by the discovery
of his marriage in 1601 to Anne More and we also imprisoned for a short time; later in 1601, his
poems became a lot more serious. After a long period of financial uncertainty and desperation,
during which he was twice a member of Parliament, Donne yielded to the wishes of King James I
and took orders in 1625. Two years later his wife died. He was made reader in divinity at Lincoln s
inn, a royal chaplain, and in 1621 Dean of St. Paul , a position he held until his death.
Society in these time periods where very rigorous towards the issue of wedlock and divorce; the
community would disapprove and condemn it very reprehensibly, and factors

Injury In Baseball
Healing the Injuries that Happen in Baseball For baseball players, it is essential to stay healthy.
One of the reasons a player tends to focus on healing his body is that if a player sits out injured
for too long, he may lose his starting position. Though this is always in the forefront of a player s
mind, the first thing he should think about is healing his body so that he can continue his career.
The most common injury to baseball players is tennis elbow . Other injuries baseball players deal
with are dislocated joints and broken bones. Though baseball may seem like a less injury prone
sport than soccer or football, it can have just as many injuries with life changing implications as the
hard hitting sports. Lateral epicondylitis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

All this constitutes a player having the mind set of continuing his career. The most common
injury to baseball players is tennis elbow, and tennis elbow is only treated in a nonsurgical
manner by physical therapy with steroid shots and surgically by the replacing of diseased
muscles. Baseball players have to deal with the problem of injured and dislocated shoulders,
which are treated by rotator cuff surgeries in the most extreme of cases. Dislocated hips are also
a part of the game, requiring months of rest for recovery. Players also suffer from broken bones.

Depicted In Billy Collins The Afterlife
Billy Collins is considered one of the most popular poets in America. He is an accomplished
writer; he has twenty two poetry books published and was the Poet Laureate of the United States
from 2001 to 2003. In Collins s 1991 poetry collection Questions about Angels, the poem The
Afterlife describes the fantasies people have towards the afterlife that many have when alive. It
addresses a variety of beliefs people have towards the afterlife: belief in reincarnation, those who
find themselves in a big air conditioned room full of food and chorus girls, and more (line 17).
Collins uses imagery in the poem to reach and speak to the readers of the poem. The afterlife is
considered a touchy subject in most societies conversely, Collins deflates the unease with his
satirical yet harmless nevertheless ending the poem in a serious, melancholic tone. The Afterlife

Thomas Hobbes And The Political Philosophy
Thomas Hobbes was, as we know, a 17th century British philosopher. We learn in this module
that Hobbes was the creator of the political philosophy known as social contract theory and that
he was also an egoist. By the revelation of the latter one could easily infer, before diving deeper,
that this philosophical theory is based on the inherent selfishness of man. This assumption would,
of course, be correct. Hobbes believed that all of mankind is inherently selfish and that to obtain
a peaceful and civilized society we had to give up those base desires in the name of security. The
idea being that I give up my right to murder my neighbor so that my neighbor is not allowed to
murder me. You give up your right to do things that could possible harm other people so that other
people do not harm you doing those same things.
Hobbes argued that, without an authority to enforce this social contract, man would revert to a State
of Nature in which there would be no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and
consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be
imported by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things
as require much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no
Letters; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man,
solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short . People will murder, lie, and steal

  • 2. Tomkey Family By David Sedaris In the first few paragraphs of David Sedaris memoir, the author is forced to realize that some people live different realities than he does. Upon learning that his new neighbors, the Tomkey family, have very different views on modern technology than most of first world society, he grows curious of them. The way the neighborhood reacts to this situation has a lot to say about how society tolerates other opinions and beliefs. Observation of their reactions shows how they feel more distant and uncomfortable towards the Tomkey family. David s own curiosity could be explained by his new lifestyle change, considering the narrator transitioned from a very secluded neighborhood to a much more cramped city lifestyle. When Sedaris learns that his new neighbors were definitely much more diverse than his family, he begins to question their beliefs. He then starts to spend a lot of time around their house. During nighttime, he gets much closer. By watching the family through their window, he learns how the family acts during different activities throughout the day. Eventually, Sedaris is able to observe the Tomkey children during school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with the purchase of their boat came their absence, especially around Halloween. Because of their absence, the Tomkey family decides to trick or treat after Halloween concludes, which proves problematic to Sedaris and his sisters even though they have an apologetic mindset. The Tomkey family arrives on their doorstep in full costume with the famous three words almost guaranteed to get you candy. Unfortunately, it was the beginning of November, so the Sedaris home was totally rid of candy except for a few Halloween bags previously earned by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of English Tense And Aspect Analyzing English tense and aspect is presented with the idea that it has temporal relations within a sentence. The reference points are used by the terminal and initial points of real time events. There is also two hypothetical times: (Dalrymple pg. 68): the perfect time (that is pertaining to the perfect aspect) and the progressive (which is during time). When continuing analysis of tense and aspect, it requires to identify if the relationships will or will not substantiate among time and events. For instance if I say Ken ate a frozen dinner, it can be established that this sentence is past tense, and it includes that the time of this main event which is eating a frozen dinner precedes the time of statement within this sentence. In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Examples: (note: S stands for speech time. R for reference time. E for event time.) These examples will provide a visual as to what was explained above. Present Tense: E, R, S I am in California. Past Tense: E, R......S I was in California when I saw her. Past Perfect: E....R....S I had been in California when I saw her. Future Perfect: S....E....R I will have been to California when is see you next. It can be seen from these classifications of tenses above that the relative tenses and the reference time are split apart(this is what the use of the periods are for to demonstrate the time splits). Another thing to analyze is that only in the future perfect tense does speech time occurs first in the sentence. In addressing the past perfect tense, the lecture states that the role of the past perfect is backshifting in the sequence of tense which is why I represented the time split from event time, reference time and speech time apart us such. Other examples offered: He said that he preferred the darker cigars. (past tense=present tense) He said that he had selected the darker cigar. ( past perfect= present tense) These examples display the ideal of backshifting. Both instances of these sentences are in the past in time, however they can be interpreted as an event currently happening now. The lecture from the University of Colorado also offers this analogy to better understand aspect versus tense: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Professional, Ethical Legal Issues in Nursing Practice Singapore Nursing Board Standards for Nursing Practice defines that Nurses/midwives have the professional responsibility and accountability to uphold Standard of care and to contribute to their dissemination, interpretation and development despite medical advances, social and demographic changes and an increasingly complex healthcare delivery system that challenge the ability of nurses to provide safe quality of care. Should nurses fail to uphold certain standards and by doing so cause harm or injury to the client, they would be held liable in the tort of negligence. Description of a practical situation which raised ethical issues: Mr Lim 70 years old has been hospitalised for medical treatment with the diagnosis of chronic heart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Harris (2005) defines autonomy is the ability of a person to control their own life and to some extent their own destiny. He moreover mentioned that patients have the right to refuse and non compliance is not unusual. However, Mr Lim was not received the treatment information and do not have a chance to refuse or decide regarding his treatment plan he received. Beneficence Beneficence means that acting in the patient s best interest and to do good always (Hendrick, 2000). Beauchamp Childress (2001) define the beneficence as a moral obligation to act for the benefit of others. According to Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (2002) stated that the nurse is called to uphold and protect the patient s interests and well being, maintain and improve his/her knowledge and competent to serve the interests of society . Nevertheless both nurses are instead of to uphold and protect the patient well being, because of their negligence and malpractice Mr Lim has cardiac arrest and develop brain damage. Non maleficence Beneficence Non maleficence means to do no harm and negligence occur when the nurse owed a duty of care to patient (Hendrick, 2000). When a patient was admitted to hospital for treatment, the hospital and its staff owe a duty of care to patient (Tay, 2001). Non maleficence is the principle in health care and forms the basis of the nurses duty to take care in the way do no harm in which they look after their patient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Fundamental Principle Of Concept Of Parsimony The most fundamental principle of behaviourism is the concept of parsimony. The law of parsimony, which can be known in other variations as the (Occam s Razor or Morgan s canon ) defines that explanations should In fact account for the greatest number of facts or observations, with the fewest number of principles or assumptions. (Underwood, 1957) When studying behaviourism, the Key concepts found are the stimulus and response also known as the (S R) equation. This involves classical and operant conditioning. These stimuli s allow the greatest possibility to manipulate independent variables in order to study the dependent variable. The measurable change in environment means that any event or situation may have some subsequent changes in behaviour to reinforce learning. Theorist John Broadus Watson (1913) was the first behaviourist to coin the ideas around behaviourism. He used contiguity to explain ideas and said that practice could strengthen ones learning. His approach to behaviourism was very parsimonious, using only a strict few simples to explain a variety of phenomena, e.g. The Little Albert experiment . The idea round the experiment was that by pairing a white rat (CS) with a loud bang (UCS) one could induce fear (UCR) which is known as classical conditioning. With these observable events Watson s was able to influence many theorists and their contributions to behaviourism. Firstly I refer to Skinner s work on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Knight Errantry The Canon, the Don, and Sancho Panza all have different views on the subject of chivalric romances and knight errantry. While the Don and the Canon represent the extreme ends of opinions, Sancho bridges the gap between the two. The Canon believes that books are completely unrealistic. He poses the question, how can the reader find joy in such absurdities? The Canon sees these novels in a strict black and white view. He acknowledges that fiction does have a place in literature, however the Canons says that, These books provide subject matter with which a good intelligence could express itself... (441). The Canon prides himself in being highly intelligent and feels that only unintelligent would be able to find pleasure in such blatant lies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is not able to dissociate fiction from reality. In the eyes of Don, the novels of knight errantry serve as a guide for how to live. The Don believes that the knights are role models that all able people should strive to live by. It is the utmost honor to live the life of a knight errant. He defends all accounts of knight errantry, and if he happens upon someone who disagrees with his opinions, he disregards them because he assumes they are not a knight errant and, therefore, would not understand. When the Canon defamed his precious books the Don replied, I consider that it is you who are out of your senses and under some spell, for you have taken it upon yourself to utter such blasphemies again what has been so well received in the world and so widely accepted as the truth that anyone who denies it, as you do, deserves the same punishment that you say you inflict on books that annoy you when you read them (453). The Don then continues to combine historic facts with those of his chivalric fantasy in his explanation to the Canon of reliability of the novels. Don Quixote truly cannot separate fact from fiction. In the truest sense of insanity, he believes that the novels of night errantry with their absurd claims are not only plausible, but also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Activity Based Costing And How It Works I chose to write about activity based costing. I chose to write this paper because I wanted to know more about activity based costing and how it works. According to our text, activity based costing (ABC) has received a lot of attention since the 90 s. ABC has a lot of more details and can be more complicated than all the other costing methods, however it s more accurate. Costing systems are information systems. They require a specific type of information such as direct labour hours and units produced, to be of value. It is from the input data that product costsand other information are determined according to the specific costing system defined methodology. The results obtained would depend on the costing system used, since the same input data could be used in different ways. In this case the traditional costing system or an activity based costing system (Marx.) A costing system should provide information to help minimize waste, but should not be wasteful in itself. In other words, the resources required to design, implement and maintain a costing system should be less than the benefit derived from the use of the system (Marx.) Activity based costing (ABC) assigns manufacturing overhead costs to products in a more logical manner than the traditional approach of simply allocating costs on the basis of machine hours. Activity based costing first assigns costs to the activities that are the real cause of the overhead. It then assigns the costof those activities only to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Essay On Muscle Injury You often hear about athletes who are unable to play their sport due to a pulled hamstring. In fact, a pulled hamstring is one of the most common muscle pulls or muscle injury. Your hamstrings are a group of three muscles that help extend your legs at the hip and flex them at the knee. A pulled hamstring is a strain or tear in the muscles or tendons. To understand what causes a hamstring injury you have to know how muscles work. All muscles work in pairs to perform a task. One set of muscles contracts to exert force while the other set of muscles relaxes. The hamstring muscles located at the back of the thigh, work with the quadriceps muscle group in the front of the thigh. When you want to bend your leg, the hamstring muscles contract and the quadriceps muscles relax. Conversely, when you want to straighten your leg, the quadriceps muscles contract and the hamstring muscles relax. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This frequently happens with the hamstring muscles. The quadriceps muscles are usually much more powerful, so the hamstring can become fatigued faster. A fatigued muscle cannot relax as easily when its opposing muscle contracts, leading to strains. Muscle strains are overuse injuries that result when the muscle is stretched without being properly warmed up. An injury to the hamstring is usually readily apparent. Mild strains may involve simple, uncomfortable tightening of the muscle. More severe injuries may result in a sharp pain in the back of the thigh, usually in full stride. A rupture or tear may leave you unable to stand or walk, muscles may be tender to the touch and painful to stretch your leg. Within a few days after a tear the area may appear very bruised. The National Survey on Drug use and Health found in 2014, 11. 4 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 (2. 8 million adolescents) had an MDE during the past year (SAMSHA). The pressures and struggles of being an adolescent can only be exacerbated by major depressive episodes or even a diagnosis of major depressive disorder. Adolescents require support for their experiences and attention needs to be brought to their trials. . Major depression not only affects adolescents social and academic lives, but influence, directly, their actions and decisions as well. Adolescents can partake in numerous actions to cope with their feelings of depression such as taking drugs. The National Survey on Drug use and Health found that, Youths with a past year MDE in 2014 also were more likely than those without an MDE to be users of marijuana, nonmedical users of psychotherapeutics, users of inhalants, and users of hallucinogens in the past year (SAMSHA). The survey shows that MDE can put adolescents at a vulnerability to participate in risky behaviors. The world of drugs can be an outlet to deal with depression. This outlet though may even lead to a struggle with the very substances used to cope with their depression. The National Survey on Drug use and Health found as well that, An estimated 340,000 adolescents aged 12 to 17 in 2014 had a co occurring MDE and an SUD [substance use disorder] in the past year in 2014 (SAMSHA). • 12. The United Open Door Immigration Policy As tension in Syria and the surrounding regions intensifies, more and more refugees are fleeing to Europe seeking asylum; however, the countries they are entering are experiencing many adverse side effects; such as, social unrest, sexual assaults, and terrorist attacks. It is unacceptable for the children in these nations to have to grow up in a nation they once called home and felt safe in but now no longer has that feeling. The same argument could be made for the refugees and that is why the current open door immigrationpolicy that Angela Merkel has in effect must be remedied. The goal of a refugeeis to escape war that they and their families can live safely without worry of being killed. Not to change the ways of the nation they are entering and treat the locals with disdain for their differences in ideology, dress, culture and even diet. The host nation of a large number of refugees should not have to change their way of life to accommodate those seeking refuge. It should be the other way around. Assimilation is the goal, not disintegration of native culture. A policy which allows radical Muslims to immigrate into the country and then face punishment only after the damage from their actions has been done is grossly illogical and insufficient for the preservation of a nation s security. Preventative measures must be put in place. The mass sexual assault that occurred in 2015 at New Year s Festivals in Germanysimply and clearly demonstrate another symptom of the ... The horse was originally the symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, a legendary asso (ace) of the Italian air force during World War I, who painted it on the side of his planes. Baracca died very young on June 19, 1918, shot down after 34 victorious duels and many team victories; he soon became a national hero. Baracca had wanted the prancing horse on his planes because his squad, the Battaglione Aviatori , was enrolled in a Cavalry regiment (air forces were at their first years of life and had no separate administration), and also because he himself was reputed to be the best cavaliere of his team. The Scuderia Ferrari logo Coat of Arms of the City of StuttgartIt has been supposed that the choice of a horse was perhaps partly due to the fact that his noble family was known for having plenty of horses in their estates at Lugo di Romagna. • 16. Evaluation Of A Good Asset Within An Organization It is widely recognised in Business that the people are a valuable asset within an Organisation. If employees are not performing at an effective level, then an Organisation s survival is at risk (Huczynski Buchanan, 2013). It is a key responsibility for managers to ensure that performance levels keep improving (Aguinis, Joo, Gottfredson, 2011). As a result, interventions such as performance appraisal (PA) are used to align individual, team and organisational goals. Appraisal has been a hot topic of discussion over the decades with research concluding that performance appraisal does not always lead to improved performance (Smither, Reilly London, 2005; DeNisi Kluger, 2000; Jawahar, 2010; Steelman Rutkowski, 2004). Feedback is postulated to be moderator of performance (Kluger DeNisi, 1996, DeNisi Kluger, 2000). This phase of PA is used to establish goals to increase performance, engagement and job satisfaction (Aguinis, 2009). However, research suggests that feedback can have the opposite effect (Kluger DeNisi, 2000; Steel Rutkowski, 2004). However, most of the research mentioned above focuses on weakness based performance appraisal (WBPA). This theory focuses on where an employee is underachieving and setting goals around these areas as a means of improving behaviour (Steelman Rutkoski, 2004). More recently, a strengths based performance appraisal (SBPA) to appraisal has been developed (Kluger Bouskila Yam, 2011). This approach focuses on intensifying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Less than ten years old and it already has radically altered the potential to economic activities and the social environment. There are nearly 200 million Internet users worldwide currently. Of these 200 million users, roughly 40 percent reside in the United States (Styliano, A., Robbins, S. Jackson, P., 2003). E commerce currently affects large sectors such as communications, banking and the retail industry. There have been some negative effects on the economy due to the emergence of e commerce. It is assumed that the availability of goods online should increase competition but this does not always occur. Reputable companies who have majority control over their industry can sometimes maintain high prices. Further, the Internet allows companies to obtain pricing information from their competitors companies easily and allows them to react immediately to external changes. Company monitoring can also work against consumers. Since other companies can quickly change their price, the original company would not make any extra revenue from increased sales (LaRose, R.,2000). There is also the issue of product differentiation. Increased competition due to ecommerce allows companies to better create products especially for a certain target audience. This makes it difficult for consumers to compare products and lessens the competition and keep prices high. As electronic commerce expands it has a greater social impact. The social impact of e commerce is characterized by the globalization of markets, the shift towards an economy based on knowledge and information, and the growing prominence of technology in everyday life (Jones, B., n.d.). As e commerce expands, there becomes a greater need to improve education about the business and technical side of e commerce. Traditional educational institutions will have to ... To this day, she is considered to be one of the most influential American poets of all time. I taste a liquor never brewed has been said to be Emily Dickinson s best poem she ever wrote. It is said to be her best poem because of the complexity of the poem. She wrote with an obvious rhyme scheme and expresses superb imagery throughout her poem. Comparison Of Betty Neuman s Systems Model Comparison Assignment Betty Neuman s systems model is a systems theory that emphasizes the importance of the complex and ongoing interactions among all subsystems of an individual (Hood, 2014, p.128). Neuman s systems model focuses on decreasing external, internal, and environmental factors that could adversely affect an individual. Furthermore, Neuman s system model explains that these stressors can cause a specific response and a unique reaction that consequently wears off the defense lines that protect the person s inner core and preserve their health and well being (Hood, 2014, p.131). In contrast, Callista Roy s adaption model is a stress/adaption theory based on the premise that human response can adapt and change in terms of accommodation (Hood, 2014, p. 133). Roy s adaption model explains that human response to stimuli is dictated by the individual s adaptive modes, type of stimuli they were confronted by, level of adaption, and ability to cope (Hood, 2014). Moreover, as Hood (2014) states, a person s adaption level is determined by its response to a combination of focal, contextual, and residual stimuli. While Roy s adaption ... Due to the abolition of customs barriers and the currency no longer varying from each state trade increased between the countries. This did not occur however without the help of the railways. This is best summed up in the thesis of the speech, where Periclesencourages Athenians to realize how great Athens is and fall in love with her. Pericles insists, When you realize her greatness, then reflect that what made her great was men with a spirit of adventure, men who knew their duty, and men who were ashamed to fall below a certain standard. Furthermore, the multi billion dollar industry sports produces effects that can impact individuals and communities. In recent years dozens of new sports stadiums have been built throughout the country, with major funding coming from public subsidies. The aim of this paper is to analyze the positive and negative impacts that come with these subsidies. The issue at hand, however, is that power has shifted from the cities to the teams themselves. • 43. Human Nature And The Mind Human Nature and The Mind Human nature and the mind have been studied for ages. As humans, we tend to think, feel, and act in certain ways that are often elucidated by nature and evolution. In fields such as Psychology, Philosophy, and Science, human nature and the mind have been extensively studied to develop theories about why humans act, think, and feel that way that we do. It is believed by some that humans are born a certain way by nature. There are three ways that people tend to believe humans are born: naturally good, naturally evil, or neutral. A Chinese philosopher named Mencius is an example of someone who believed that humans are born naturally good. Mencius is believed to be the most important figure in the development of Confucianism, right after Confucius himself. Mencius wrote Man s Nature Is Good in the year Circa 300 BCE. This rhetorical piece argues Mencius s views on the nature of man. Mencius not only believed that humans were born naturally good, but also that they, ...with proper training, could become perfect (Austin 78). A Chinese scholar named Hsun Tzu believed almost the exact opposite of Mencius. Although Hsun Tzu was a Confucian similarly to Mencius, he did not share the belief that humans are born naturally good. Tzu actually wrote a piece titled Man s Nature Is Evil in which he explains his argument. Tzu believed that humans need structure, and that ...strict discipline could make human beings good despite their natural inclinations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The theme of the exhibition will be about the reimagining of the exotic female form through abstract sculpturespecifically, in the round, free standing sculptures. Both Chihuly s piece as well as Castle s fit this theme as they depict abstract forms that can be interpreted as feminine. Both sculpture s in the exhibition can also be seen as being inspired by the exotic and romanticized past. It does not sound entirely pessimistic, rather, it gives some practical and constructive instructions pertaining to a key reality of life that one has to face, i.e., death. Importantly, Psalm 49 dissipates two types of fear, i) the fear of enemies at the time of death (v 6) and ii) the fear of the wealthy and powerful who think that they may have some merit at the time of death (v 17). The Wisdom teacher destroys the fear factor but does not give an alternative that would explain why we should not fear. • 46. The Satirical Nature Of Tartuffe By Moliere Wendy Ifenso Okpala Dr Ress WR 150 The Satirical Nature of Tartuffe The French play, Tartuffe, was written by Moliere in 1664. The major theme in this play is exposing what is wrong in the religious society and Moliere uses comedy to point out this out. This idea agrees with Highet, and Robert Corrigan s definition of a satire. The first definition made by Highet is that a satire aims to expose what is wrong in our society as Moliere tries to do with religious hypocrites. The second definition by Corrigan Robert states that a satirists do not usually attack institutions, rather, they attack perversion of institutions which ties back to Moliere s main point of this play. Although certain aspects of farce and comedy are present in this play such as the nature of the characters used and the happy ending, we have to remember Highet s idea in The Anatomy of Satire, where he explains that farce, which causes unreasoning merriment is related to a satire. Moliere, whose original name was Jean Baptiste Poquelin, always wrote about basic flaws seen around him, the catholic church being one of them. He showed the troubles he had with the religious community through his characters. For example, Tartuffethe religious hypocrite is constantly overlooked by Orgon, who is the head of the household and his mother Madame Pernelle. However, Dorine the wise maid, and Cleante the brother in law, are able to see what other community members usually ignore. Moliere incorporates these ideas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The Operational Safety Management System INTRODUCTION Any well designed safety program or system is only as effective as the day to day ability of everyone in the organisation to rigorously follow procedures correctly and safely every time. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009: p.147) This statement is based on organisational discipline or each worker as having the self restraint to perform every task required. Angiullo supports the statement by discussing the operational safety management system in three core areas: leadership characteristics; well defined and followed management processes; and maintenance of high standards. Organisations only fully conform to organisational discipline when these three areas are effectively implemented within the organisation. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009). This essay will discuss why it is believed to be an utopian statement by comparing the core areas against the AS/NZ 4801:2001 Occupational health and safety management systems specification with guidance for use and supporting literature. LEADERSHIP CHARACTERISTICS An organisation s managerial leadership and commitment is defined from the top levels and filters through to the front line worker. Leadership inspires and motivates only when it is consistent. • 51. Thomas Hobbes And The Political Philosophy Thomas Hobbes was, as we know, a 17th century British philosopher. We learn in this module that Hobbes was the creator of the political philosophy known as social contract theory and that he was also an egoist. By the revelation of the latter one could easily infer, before diving deeper, that this philosophical theory is based on the inherent selfishness of man. This assumption would, of course, be correct. Hobbes believed that all of mankind is inherently selfish and that to obtain a peaceful and civilized society we had to give up those base desires in the name of security. The idea being that I give up my right to murder my neighbor so that my neighbor is not allowed to murder me. You give up your right to do things that could possible harm other people so that other people do not harm you doing those same things. Hobbes argued that, without an authority to enforce this social contract, man would revert to a State of Nature in which there would be no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no Letters; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short .
