Carl Sauer, one of the foremost geography scholars of the 20th century theorized that the defining
characteristics of a cultural landscape differed from those of his predecessors. His findings, while

Geographical Surroundings Shape Traits Throughout the novel, issues of setting and social status can
reflect onto the characters, therefore shaping their traits. Each character is connected to their differing
settings, which in return creates the character s differing attitudes and psychological or moral traits.
Heathcliff, Edgar Linton, and Catherine Earnshaw are the three characters in which their settings
reflect their personalities, and therefore create their physical and moral traits. Heathcliff is harsh and
fierce, for he seems dark and mysterious because he never shows his emotions. When first introduced
to Heathcliff in the novel, he lacked hospitality and comfort towards Lockwood when he had come to
visit him as a guest. Heathcliff, for the beginning parts of his life, stood in a lower social class than the
people he lived around, and therefore created a dark attitude towards others out of anger and jealousy.
His dark and evil traits are connected to landscape around his house, Wuthering Heights, for they have
the same characteristics as Heathcliff. The landscape that surrounds the house can be described as
rugged, and it is exposed to extreme weather elements that reflect Heathcliff s emotions and traits. The
harsh snow that falls at Wuthering Heights makes the outdoors uninviting, just as Heathcliff s

My favorite quote will always be by Sappho in which she says, Someone, I tell you, in another time
will remember us. She was right. She s remembered for being a gay poet and is immortalized despite a
lot of her works not being found completely. It s one of my favorite quotes because identifying as a
nonbinary queer person who also likes girls, I can relate to Sappho a lot when she writes about her
desire for love and personal heartbreaks. This quote also brings me ease as even in another time

The Little Albert Experiment In 1920, behaviorist John B. Watson and his graduate student Rosalie
Rayner wanted to study classical conditioning in people. Classical conditioning is when two stimuli
are paired and produce an effect off of the second stimulus, but eventually produce the same effect
with the first stimulus individually. Watson believed they were capable of furthering psychologist Ivan
Pavlov s research on conditioning dogs to conditioning humans. Watson was a professor at John
Hopkins University and of course, that was Rayner s alma mater. Watson wanted to justify that
emotions were something learned and not inherently placed in the human mind. According to
Alexander Burgemeester, Watson hypothesized that although it was uncommon for a baby to have a
phobia of animals, if one animal succeeds in arousing fear, any moving furry animal thereafter may
arouse it (Burgemeester). Both, Watson and Rayner fed off of scientist Ivan Pavlov s classical
conditioning experiment. Ivan Pavlov was a Russian scientist who is famously known for his classical
