Analysis Of A Night On The Town By Fats Makaye
The topic of the essay that I have selected is called A night on the town: INSPECTOR FATS Makaye,
IVORY PARK. Throughout this story, Fats Makaye has different attitudes towards his occupation of
being a police officer which include being bitter, negative, disillusioned and demotivated, however
Fats Makaye also shows a positive attitude throughout this story. Both of these attitudes are affected or
shaped by either structure or agency. The term social structure is the complex framework of societal
institutions (such as the economy, politics and religion) that makes up a society and that organises and
establishes limits on people s behaviour (school of social sciences; department of sociology; SOCL
1014 SOCL 1009; IDENTITY AND SOCIETY; PART 1: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
COURSE WORKBOOK; Louise Hagemeier and Christine Bischoff; 2015: page 19). However the
term agency is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices

Makaye s attitude. Fat s negative attitude relates to specific events in his past that hinder his future to
be promoted to a higher ranking officer. Mr. Makaye blames his being witheld from a promotion on
the Apartheid system, which was once a law in South Africa until the year of 1994. Mr. Makaye states
that he has not yet been promoted, because The old excuse was the exams (Altbeker, A. 2005. The
Dirty Work of Democracy. Jhb: Jonathan Ball Publishers; chapter 12: page 205). Mr. Makaye goes on
to elaborate that the exam was a trick to prevent the black police offers from been promoted to a
higher ranking. The structural force in this instance is the one of Apartheid that would in the past
prevent black police officers from receiving a promotion. Mr. Makaye uses the issue of the Apartheid
system as an excuse to cover up his failure to a promotion in the future and allows him to retain his

Mnr Influence On America
Since its birth in the late 18th century, the United States has arguably had one of the greatest global
presences in human history. It has left its impact on most, if not all, nations currently in existence. In
the past century, the United States has helped develop and manage many different countries around the
world. In recent years the goal of this nation building and managing came in response to the spreading
of communistic ideals. The United States, being a democratic and capitalistic nation, helped many
nations avoid being led by communistic regimes. United States intervention has helped to prevent
dictatorships, oppression, and genocide around the globe. Many of these interventions came during a
key period of time of communistic ideology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The spreading of communistic ideals was a, if not the, primary focus of U.S. foreign policy. Even
though both of these countries are thousands of miles and multiple continents away, the manner in
which the U.S. intervened in both of these countries is strikingly similar. While communism was the
root of both of these countries interventions, the MNR was not nearly as dangerous of a communist
threat as the North Korean government. The communistic goals of the oppressive North Korean
government were a much greater threat to democracy than the primarily economic goals that the MNR
had. This is why war was imminent in Korea but in Bolivia it remained relatively peaceful. While both
countries received financial and provisional aid from the United States, the reasoning behind this aid
was different. In Bolivia the United States gave this aid in an attempt to stabilize their government and
keep making economic profit from the tin industry in Bolivia. While aid in Korea was less for United
States gain and more for the retention of democracy. Economically speaking, the case of Bolivia and
South Korea turned out to have an extremely different impact. The aid that was given to Bolivia, in
turn ruined their economy and drove them into deeper and deeper reliance upon the United States. In
South Korea however, the South Korean people were able to capitalize on the aid they were given and
turn it into a highly functional and profiting society. This is possibly because the Bolivians were never
able to diversify their countries source of revenue as South Korea was able to, with it coming
primarily from tin and oil. To this day the Bolivian people still have a dependence on the American
government where the Korean and American government can almost be seen as equals. It would be a
safe assumption to say that both the Korean and

Codeswitching from English Essays
The use of codeswitching between English and other languages is examined from a sociolinguistic
perspective. It will be shown that codeswitching is instinctive and achieves overarching objectives
such as serving the outcome of speech, defining identity and indirectly delineating aspects of the
relationship between the participants, it lubricates the conversation by making it more fluid , and when
English is used, brings clarity and precision, particularly to formal arrangements. Finally
codeswitching from English as a component of metrolinguistics will be considered in relation to the
data provided.

grounds of the need for a spontaneous response in a telephone call, giving insufficient time for a
considered language choice.
The second extract, between Jaya and Prathiba is conducted almost entirely in Kannada, as they have
known each other for many years, and have a much closer working relationship. However the English
words paperwork and legal clarification are used in 2.5, which is otherwise spoken in Kannada. These
are loanwords and fill a vocabulary gap (Ibid. p. 264), for as Jaya says in her commentary I don t even
know what the Kannada equivalent is , she refers to them as work words that are automatically
embedded into Kannada. Another example of embedding can be found at 4.9 where sixth is used in a
sentence spoken in Kannada, as Jaya comments we often embed English numbers into Kannada .
At the beginning of excerpt 3 Jaya chooses to use Hindi rather than English, with her brother, who is
on holiday visiting their father in India. Hindi was the language of their childhood in north India and
this allows her to be more personal and rebuke him over her difficulty in reaching him on the
telephone, so using Hindi in 3.1 she says and then I spoke to the entire world . This use demonstrates
an aspect of stable bilingualism (Ibid. p. 294) in a multilingual family, in this context it can be called
language maintenance (Ibid.) and it is

Comparing and Contrasting Farm and Factory Jobs Essay
Working on a farm or in a factory has both similarities and differences, but moving from a rural to a
city job could be quite difficult. Farm and factory jobs are similar because they are dangerous and
require intense physical labor. Both the farm and factory jobs have daily hazards. In 2009, farming
continues to be the most dangerous job in the United States, due to the constant risk of animal
stampedes or agricultural machinery accidents. In factories, like Grede Foundries, ear and eye
protection against deafening crashes and flying sparks is required, as well as having all skin covered to
prevent from hot metal burns. However, the most noticeable similarity is the amount of physical labor
needed in both Wauwatosa and Elkhorn workplaces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At Krusen Grass Farms in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, almost all of the work is done outdoors, with the
exception of making hay, milking, and pasteurizing. On the contrary, in Wauwatosa at Grede
Foundries, all work is completed indoors. Beside work location differences, the typical work hours
between farms and factories vary. In 2009, almost all farm owners (like Altfrid Krusenbaum) work
seventy to eighty hours per week, year round. On the other end of the spectrum, factory laborers, at
Grede Foundries, work forty hours per week and have off two or three days weekly. The final notable
difference is the overall focus on nature or machinery; the simple, natural, wholesome farm life
contrasts with the technical and mechanical responsibilities of a factory worker. Whether through
work hours or work place, factory and farm laborers have a differing employment experience. The
journey of a farm worker moving to a factory in United States history would be problematic, due to
the change in environmental exposures. While the old homestead was relatively quiet, the
industrialized factory was filled with deafening clamor, which could result in hearing loss. Also,
mastering the new factory machinery could take time to learn, and lives may be sacrificed along the
way. In the 1900s, the factory death rates rose because naĆÆve

Health Disparities Of Prenatal Care
One important health disparity is the lack of prenatal care amongst women in socially disadvantaged
populations. These predominately include women of minorities, women who have a low income, and
the location these women live in. This health disparity is important to address because research has
shown that women who receive prenatal care are more likely to conceive babies of a healthy birth
weight and have low infant mortality rates than those women who do not receive this prenatal care (
Putting Women s Health Disparities on the Map, 2009). Therefore, health disparities amongst women
in need of prenatal care have lead to preventable infant mortalities amongst women in vulnerable
populations. Three reasons why this health disparity is important to address include the following:
health disparities in prenatal care lead to lack of access to prenatal care to women in vulnerable
populations, there are increased adverse health outcomes for both the infant and mother, and there are
excess medical expenses that could otherwise have been prevented. Because prematurity is the leading
cause of newborn death in the United States ( Healthy Mothers and Healthy babies, 2013), finding and
developing a solution will be extremely beneficial and needs to begin with addressing prenatal care.
The first problem that needs to be addressed is simply the lack of access for women in vulnerable
populations to prenatal care. This is a major problem because we see that the rate of women who

The Influence Of The Ancient Roman Gladiatorial Games
The Roman gladiator captivated the masses and contributed to the very definition of ancient Rome.
The consumption and coverage of football in America today is the modern equivalent to how
gladiatorial games fit into the entertainment and overall culture of the ancient Roman world, with the
gladiatorial games holding even deeper importance regarding spirituality. In a society built through the
balancing of bloodshed and civility, the ancient Roman gladiator made his impact through spectacle
by pure carnage. From 264 BC to AD 404, the Roman people were captivated by gladiators; their
appeal remained constant through shifts in power and changes in overall purpose. The purpose of
Roman gladiatorial combat went from being to honor the dead and ... Show more content on

Since these early contests were held graveside at funerals, there were no large audiences and the main
purpose of the games was not to entertain masses of people. Also, the use of games as a funeral rite
was only somewhat popular at the higher levels of society with aristocrats, making demand for the
games somewhat of a niche market. A shift in the nature and purpose of Roman gladiatorial games
occurred in 264 BC at the funeral of Roman consul Julius Brutus Pera. This fight was different
because it was put on in the public eye. The fight was pitched at a public oxen market and featured
three contests at the same time . This escalation of public appeal and increase in overall size of event
marked an important shift from private display of honor and deference to public display of spectacle
and entertainment. The practice of Roman gladiatorial games being used as public displays of wealth,
power, and status was also born at the funeral of Brutus Pera, adding display of societal standing to the
purpose of gladiatorial games. The demand for gladiatorial games rose sharply from this point
forward, so naturally, Rome had to supply more of what the people were demanding. To meet the
demand for bigger, better, and more frequent gladiatorial games, gladiator trainers or lanistaes used
multiple points of supply to find bodies to train. Most gladiators were slaves taken from conquered
lands or prisoners of war. Convicted criminals also

Essay on Brothers of the Bible
Brothers of the Bible
The Old Testament sibling rivalries between Cain and Abel, Esau and Jacob, and Joseph and his
brothers were similar in some ways and different in others, but they all hold lessons for us today, for
brothers today still face many of the same problems in life that challenged brothers thousands of years
ago.
Cain and Abel were in a situation much more unique than Esau and Jacob, and Joseph and his brothers
faced, for the society they lived in was extremely small, and they each had a direct relationship with
God. As the book of Genesis tells us, Cain was the first born son of Adam and Eve. Their next son was
a boy whom they named Abel. As Cain and Abel grew up both took responsibilities for making a
living. Abel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cain takes the road of denial rather than hiding from God; even more, he turns the question back to
God implying impropriety in God?s question. ?Keeping? is not something human beings do to one
another in the Old testament; only God keeps human beings; hence God should know the answer to
the question. (Abingdon, 373)
Another unique element of the Cain and Abel rivalry and its tragic aftermath is that God personally
punished Cain for the murder of Abel, and sent him into exile. But God also showed some mercy to
Cain which protected him from harm at the hands of others by putting a mark upon him. The narrator
leaves him as one who has been placed under the very special care of God. Hence, the story ought not
to be interpreted in basically negative terms, but rather as the activity of one who lives under divine
protection and care. (Abingdon, 375)
The sibling rivalry between Jacob and Esau didn?t result from envy due to God?s reaction to their
sacrifices, but from envy over parental favoritism. In addition to this, the rivalry also involved a
number of other factors and began even before they were born. As God explained to Rebekah when
the twins were still in her womb, ?the two children inside you will become the fathers of two nations.
Just like the two are fighting with each other now, the two nations will struggle with each other. One
will be stronger than the other. and the older will serve the younger.? (Genesis 33) God explains to her

The United States Involvement During The Vietnam War
Though out history, American has had its hand in conflict with other countries. Some of those
conflicts have turned out into wars. Looking back at America s track record with war, America has a
worthy past of having its citizen s support. Obviously the two World Wars we not controversial. The
United States in the Korean War was criticized, fairly, for its strategy, but the need to defend South
Korea was never questioned. In only the Vietnam War was the United States very participation
criticized. This is such a gigantic change with prior wars that it bears study as to why it happened, and
better yet, should have it happened. This paper will discuss the United States involvement in the
Vietnam War, by asking the simple question, Should have the Untied States gotten involved into the
first place. This paper will prove that in fact, America should have not gotten involved with the
Vietnam War. The Vietnam War took place in between 1947 1975. It consisted of North Vietnam
trying to make South Vietnam a communism government. The United States later joined this conflict
because of the stress North Vietnam was putting to South Vietnam to become a government that
America did not want. The main reason why America joined was because of a theory called the
Domino Effect. America and Russia were going through what has been dubbed the Cold War. The
Domino Effect is the theory that communism will spread form one country to another. United states

Natural Sweetener Vs Natural Sugar
Artificial Sweetener vs. Natural Sugar
Is there anything SWEET about artificial sugar? Well, over the years there have been many different
kinds of sweeteners that have been tested in labs to see how they affect our bodies. The first big
artificial sweetener first got discovered in 1897, when a John Hopkins University researcher
accidentally forgot to wash his hands before lunch after doing tests in a lab. He tasted something
sweet on his finger, and that was the start of Saccharin. Today, many people use sweeteners like
Splenda, Sweet N Low, Equal, and Truvia to sweeten their food and drinks.
To begin with, natural sugar is a kind of sugar that is naturally in food and cannot be made or put into
them. For example, this kind of sugar can be found in fruit as fructose and dairy products such as milk
and cheese as lactose. Also, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Foods with
natural sugar have an important role in the diet of cancer patients and anyone trying to prevent cancer
because they provide essential nutrients that keep the body healthy and help prevent disease. Then,
eating natural organic sugar doesn t just keep you healthier, but it also helps the environment
protection and the reduce of pollution by not using more chemicals to grow plants. Therefore, Natural
Sugar is used for not just making our bodies healthy but for making the environment healthy too.
Secondly, we have Artificial sugar, or sweetener, that is formed in labs and is

honey bees. But, did you know, Honey bees are actually pretty smart? Honey bees are able to
recognize and remember different colors and keep track of up to 4 different landmarks. Honey bees
often get mistaken as bumblebees. A few things that make honey bees and bumblebees different are
that, bumblebees have short furry bodies and honey bees have long, wasp like bodies. Also, Honey
bees live in hives of up to 50,000 to 60,000 bees, while bumblebees live in nests of up to 40 to 500
bees. Bumblebees can sting more than once but, they will only sting if they are aggravated. Honey

Controversy Within Racism And Religion
Controversy within Racism and Religion in the 17th Century
Many would wonder why racism and religion rapture like a constant glare of ambiguity. Along from
the 1700 s to now the 20th century, we ask ourselves why does your race and religion matter still? I
would like to think that racism should not even matter based off what is now happening today. Within
the essay I will discuss to the reader about three stories that to me had many similarities in
comparisons; with controversy, racial segregation and biblical context. I will explain how the text
related subject of racial profiling which showed a symbolic idol of (God) in the form of faith during
these early times. I will then speak on the controversy that the narrator tried to convey the audience to
mimic harsh opinions on certain characters. The last I will speak upon how religion was quoted
throughout this paper in the stories.
My argument is why did race play such a prime factor in the 17th and 18th century and continues to
take place in the 20th century still? As I read the stories I will briefly speak about Mary Rowlandson,
Iroquois Creation, and Benito Cereno. All three stories are coming from the (Norton, Anthology
American Literature) Vol A B. The first overview will be on Rowlandson, next will be Iroquois
Creation, followed by Benito Cereno. The story seemed to me right off as there were some segregation
taking place in all three even with many religious beliefs. Within this essay the reader could get a

I believe that there are people who are aware of what their values when arguing about social issues
and others not. In Order to figure out their value when it comes to the social issue they must first
understand or recognize the context first. For instance A person s value assumption are greatly affected
by the context in which they are being applied ( Browne and Keeley 67). In Addition, The context and
factual issues associated with a controversy also greatly influence how far we re willing to go with a

In Joyce s Araby , we see a variety of symbolism. The boy who serves as the main character of the

assignment, I will identify four specific places in the text that is associated with religion, explain why
I have this chose to be in reference to religion and lastly I will explain what the religious imagery
reveals as far the boy s character. Early in the text, the boy discusses going to the market with his aunt.

Throughout the text, he seems to be confused and gets caught between his thoughts for the girl versus
his spiritual thoughts. Specifically for the chalice imagery, I found this to be associated with the boy s
obsession to the girl. The way the chalice is held is the way the boy wishes to hold the girl. I think the
religious imagery of the apple tree is associated with the boy s temptation and loss of innocence for
the girl. The boy has already given in spiritually to the girl by having lust for her, therefore he feels
though he has bitten the forbidden fruit and lost his knowledge; his initial knowledge of knowing
Christ. The boy is willing to risk his spiritual life all for the sake of the girl. For the salver mentioned,
I think the boy associated the salver to religion by the stark image of mixing money in with this.
Money and religion are never good together. The last religious imagery is the description of his setting
which associates his religious experience with his personal life. He has an essential relationship with
Christ and therefore spends a lot of his time in

Some products would not be sold in Jessops but would be sold online resulting in losses of potential

to social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook people don t need to share their photos in a
physical format and are capable of simply sending the picture via these social websites. In this case of
selling products it was a massive drawback for Jessops but turned out to be an advantage for
competitors such as Amazon. The increased number of internet users leads to benefits for Amazon
who thrive off increased internet usage due to consumers finding it a cheaper alternative to Jessops.
The internet can also be a good source of primary market research which enables firms such as
Amazon to analyze prices of different websites. This would give the opportunity for Amazon to

During the 19th century, men were the ones who typically proposed to women. However, men did not
solely ask for their hand in marriage, they also had to formulate something to say. In the books Pride
and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, there are two men who
decide to propose to someone they take liking in. Those men are William Collins who proposes to
Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) and Bradley Headstone who proposes to Lizzie Hexam.
Although both of the men s proposal resulted in rejection, one of the proposals had better diction than
the other. The ideas such as bringing up [their significant other s] reputation or having true love for
[their significant lover] may indicate to the women they are truly sincere. Due to the time period s
typical romances, there were a limited amount of things a woman and man can do with each other in

Super Bowl. But the other kind of football, the football the rest of the world knows, has no padding or
helmets. This other football is known in America as soccer. In more than 175 countries across the
globe, football, or soccer, rates as the number 1 national sport.
Football dates back as far as thousands of years ago. There are records that show that ancient
civilizations of Greece, Egypt, and China (among others) played an age old form of football with a
stuffed leather ball. Early games in Old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the present there are more than 2 million players registered with official football organizations, and
about 275,000 clubs play in official leagues and tournaments. The World Cup, held every four years, is
the highlight of football tournaments. Held by FIFA (of course), it lasts 1 month, and on this month,
the world s eyes are on the World Cup. In 1994, over 1 billion people watched the World Cup, and the
events leading up to it. The fans are everything to football. The pride of their city or country equals the
pride of their football team.
A football game is not about sitting and quietly watching the game while eating hotdogs and peanuts...
it is a wild fiasco! The fans dress up in costumes and their team colors, they paint their faces and
bodies and sing songs in unison about their team. The stadiums are gigantic and chaotic. The
Maracana Stadium in Brazil is usually filled up to it s capacity with 220,000 screaming fans. Once,
many Brazilian fans fainted in the stands when they lost to Uruguay. The popularity of this sport also
has it s downsides. It has even been deadly. For instance, in 1969 the qualifying games between El
Salvador and Honduras caused a war between the 2 countries. There had been conflict between the
countries, but things boiled over when they clashed on the playing field, sparking a full scale war that
lasted 2 weeks.

Essay On Lead
Despite the documented reduction in the general population s exposure to lead , research continues to
demonstrate significant increases in risk of adverse outcomes in both children {Wigle, 2005

exposures, that may induce present and future health effects {Nash, 2003 #99;Nash, 2004 #100}.

In this study, we aim to study the association between environmental exposures to lead in children,
living in the vicinity of the lead and zinc smelters in TorreĆ³n, Mexico, and heart rate variability.
Methods
Study participants
The data used in this analysis was collected as part of the Cuida tu Corazon ( Take care of your heart ;
C2C) study, which was carried out primarily to evaluate the association between heavy metals and
measures of cardiovascular and renal function in older children who are living in Torreon, Mexico, in
the vicinity of the Met Mex PeƱoles lead and zinc smelters. We used a census developed by the Health
Department of the State of Coahuila to identify children aged 12 15 who had with at least one
measurement of blood lead level prior to the who aged 12 to 15 years at the time of the study (2009
2010), which was 6,254. We stratified this group bby quintiles of earlier blood lead levels and
randomly selected children individuals from each 5 blood lead levels strata to achieve a representative
sample of lead exposures with a final study size of target sample of 512 participants.
Sample size and power calculation
The sample size was calculated so that study hadwill have a greater than 90% power to detect an
increase in outcome (log heart rate variability measures) of 15% of their standard deviation or greater
for each doubling of blood lead exposure levels. This was based on blood lead levels in the 2001

Persuasive Essay On Hiv Aids
Addressing the HIV/AIDS Menace It is quite disturbing to witness someone undergo much suffering
due to a fatal disease, and it is even more painful to lose a loved one because of some kind illness that
cannot be cured. Over the years, many individuals have been unfortunate to face the devastating
effects of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, among others. However, the emergence of yet another
deadly disease known as AIDS has again complicated matters. AIDS has proved to be one of the most
fatal health condition across the world, and its impact in the society has grown to be a major global
challenge today. The disease is essentially caused by the HIV virus, which can be spread from one
person to another through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, and sharing of cutting and piecing
instruments with an infected person (Shukla, 2014). AIDS has not only claimed the lives of millions of
people, but also has its economic implications to the nations of the world. Although various treatment
procedures have been designed to help address this health threat, such as the use of antiretroviral
therapies, the disease, and its associated effects, can only be dealt with effectively through the
development of HIV/AIDS vaccine. Vaccination has gained great recognition as the most effective
way of controlling and managing several fatal health conditions. Thanks to Edward Jenner s
successful attempt on small pox, vaccines have been designed to help protect the human body against
many diseases that would have otherwise caused massive deaths across the world (Macaulay, 2016).
Think of what would have happened if all of these diseases were not prevented, and had to attack
someone so that they are dealt with such as the case of the AIDS disease. It is very evident that once a
disease has found its way into the human body, it acts as a trigger to several other issues that affect the
various aspects of human life. Metzl and Hansen (2014) mention that diseases are normally in a
complex relationship with every aspect of human life, and preventing them is very necessary. This is
where vaccination comes handy. The development of HIV/AIDS vaccine, therefore, would be a great
step in establishing significant resolutions to the current

The Model-Minority Stereotypes
My friend is a Chinese Indonesian, and the first word or image that came to her mind when the word
minority was introduced, is culture. Being a Chinese that lives in Indonesia, she has the privileges of
learning both cultures. Both Indonesian and Chinese cultures, unfortunately, are very conservative,
which is why she said she had hard times accepting the freedom in the White culture. She did not see
her race as a minority, because she said, Asian kids are the smartest, it is just our accent that makes us
look dumb. She also did not receive any racial discrimination before. She supported immigration, and
her first image regarding immigration is of her grandparents as an immigrant because they move from
China to Indonesia permanently in search ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lee s reading on Behind the Model Minority Stereotypes: Voices of High and Low Achieving Asian
American Students, I learned that that people s identity has a lot to do with how they perceive
minority and immigration. There are many things that Lee described that I find very accurate to the
answers of my interviewees. Lee mentioned that Asian American students are viewed as a model
minority, and there is this model minority stereotype that causes many teachers to expect greater
things from their Asian students. However, I discovered something interesting, that two of my Asian
interviewees actually believed in the stereotype, and thought of themselves as academically superior.
This is very true for my Asian American friend who said that she felt extremely proud to have the
American English accent and White culture, and at the same time having the intelligence of the Asian
brain. This can be related to the reading when one of the Korean students responded, We are smarter. I
mean, I don t think it s a stereotype look at our report cards. We are better, and we have to show it
(417). However, this is different with my peer s interview on his Asian friend who hates Math and
denies the stereotypes. The Chinese Indonesian Asian whom I interviewed also felt intelligent
compared to other races, but she admitted that her accent prevents her from speaking her thoughts.
This is similar to Thai s case where he wanted to be a lawyer, but chose engineering because of her
accent. In addition, my Chinese Indonesian interview can support Ogbu s argument, that is also
present in Lee s reading, that voluntary minorities who usually migrate because of better education
and opportunities, tends to do better academically (414). However, this should not be applied to all
Asian voluntary minorities, as generalization should not be made. In addition, Lee also mentioned
about Ogbu s

Ancient Civilization And Modern Day Iraq And Kuwait Essay
Ancient Sumerian Civilization The ancient civilization of Sumer was located in modern day Iraq and
Kuwait, and is believed to have begun around 6000 B.C. It is considered The cradle of civilization by
most historians, because it s where the first elaborate urban societies appeared. Sumerians were
polytheistic, and had a pantheon consisting of many gods and goddesses, who were anthropomorphic
superhumans. The Sumerians held a unique view of creation, the afterlife, and worship. They
contributed one of the most well known literary works The Epic of Gilgamesh , which tells of a hero s
quest to attain immortality. Within the Sumerian pantheon there were hundreds of gods, but four were
deemed the most important. This included An, god of the heavens, Enlil, the air god, Enki, the water
god, and Ninhursag, the mother goddess. It seems at one time An was seen as the greatest of all the
other gods, but later on Enlil took his place as the supreme deity. Enlil was seen as the father of the
gods, who brought good weather and abundant crops (Kramer,1963). Enki was credited for creating
the earth, and also saves man during the great flood by telling him to build an ark just like the biblical
flood account. Enki was also known for bringing wisdom and craftsmanship. Ninhursag was a fertility
goddess who brought nature and life to earth (Mark, 2011). The Enuma Elish, tells the story of
creation and the struggle for order between the gods. It begins with two separate waters swirling

communicate; either for a general conversation or to ask a question. All children are different, either it
is by the way they re brought up, their culture, have different beliefs, and in the way they
communicate for example; English is an additional language. If you had a child in the nursery who
had English as a second language, and knew few words, verbally communicating with this child
wouldn t be the first thing you would do. There are loads of different ways to do this for example;
using picture cars with words, not only will this technique help communicate but also help build the
childs English vocabulary. Another being demonstrating, for example; in an activity, lets say gluing
and sticking, show the child what to do by demonstrating the activity for them to then copy your
actions. Communication is very important, not only with the child/ young person but also their
parents/ careers. Parents and careers need to be kept updated with everything that happens with their
child/children and information that they need to know about the nursery itself. The stronger the
relationship between the practioners and the parent/ career the stronger the trust the parents/ careers
have with their child/ children in your care. Information should be shared on a day to day basis
between the practioner and the parent/ career abpout everything that happens in the nursery.

Rabies Virus
History of the Virus
The rabies virus is a major public health hazard all around the world, despite the strategies that have
been put in place to fight this infection. It is estimated that the disease kills an average of 35,000
people every year, mostly in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. It is a viral disease which directly leads
to the death of the infected individual or animal. Human beings contract the infection from a bite from
a rabid animal, but human to human transmission normally occurs as a result of organ
transplantations. The rabies virus is all over the globe except a handful of nations in which there are
effective quarantine systems, natural barriers such as rivers and mountains or rigorous eradication of

Corporate Strategy Of Walt Disney

Walt Disney s massive company, which embodies theme parks, resorts, movies, and television, slowly
sprouted from less than birth of Mickey Mouse. The Walt Disney began its franchise reign of the
entertainment industry in 1928 with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse made its debut in select short
films, the most notable being Steamboat Willie (Gamble 2014). Since then, even decades after Walt
Disney s actual death in 1966, Mickey Mouse has been the central icon around the world for this

several programs to increase access to health care, such as Medicare and Medicaid. The most
important of these reforms is the Affordable Care Act, signed into law in 2010. Many people question

Some people claim that mandates under nationalized health care requiring everyone to be insured are
unconstitutional and violate individual liberty, as the government has no right to determine consumer
consumption. However, everyone must pay into the system to offset costs of paying for the neediest
populations. The only way that disadvantaged people can gain insurance is if everyone purchases
insurance. As this affects interstate commerce, mandating participation legally falls under the
jurisdiction of the government by the Commerce Clause. Most of the international community except
for the United States has already decided that access to health care is a fundamental human right. As a
result, the government is able to do what it must to protect and secure this right. Some people
complain that they are being forced to pay for a service they do not need in order to benefit other
people. However, the mandate is good because it increases effectiveness of national health care while
allowing everyone to be prepared for a worst case scenario. States still have freedom to set their own
local policies under nationalized health care, allaying any fears about unchecked federal power. For
example, under the ACA states can set up required exchanges however they feel would be most

The Problem Of Reckless Driving
In the United States, Reckless driving is the number one cause of teenage death in the nation. Reckless
driving can be classified as anything from speeding and swerving, to purposely trying to run someone
over, or hurt them while driving. In America, there are countless organizations calling to help end the
high death rate in teenagers that reckless driving takes. People such as Parents, Drivers Education
Instructors and even state legislators have realized the problem and are seeking reform. In 2011 alone
2,650 teens between the ages of 16 19 were killed due to reckless driving. (CDC) Reckless driving is a
death that is very preventable, with proper education and warning. As well as problem that is not taken
seriously by the juvenile s committing the act. Most juveniles don t worry what so ever about dying in
a car crash because they think that it won t happen to them. Under Reckless Driving, in Green Bay,
speeding, not paying attention and lack of caring are three of the biggest issues with teen drivers and
juveniles. In Wisconsin, Reckless driving is classified under state statute 346.62 as causing bodily

Theme Of Technology In The Veldt
Technology is viewed as revolutionary, inventions that make our lives simply better by the touch of a
screen to the click of a button. However, in the short story The Veldt , Ray Bradbury portrays that
technology, despite its benefits, has many significant flaws. The improper and overuse of technology
in The Veldt causes the characters to forget how to live for themselves. The technology takes over
their independence as well as their personal lives and relationships. In The Veldt , Ray Bradbury
asserts that becoming reliant on technology causes a strain on family relations, and can be dangerous
to the way one functions as a human, taking away one s purpose in life. To begin with, the Hadley
family abuses the luxurious technology in their home, which leads to the replacement of love and real
relationships to that of technology. The dynamic of the Hadley family is influenced by technology, and
its overuse causes the hindrance of affection in the children s relationship with their parents. When
psychologist David McClean comes to discuss the problematic African Veldt in the nursery, he
realizes the root of the problem and says: You ve let this room and this house replace you and your
wife in your children s affections (Bradbury 8). This quote conveys that as much as the children have
fallen in love with their nursery, it is taking away the love they should have for their parents.
Additionally, the Hadley children, Peter and Wendy, are replacing their parents with their beloved
nursery, completely shutting out their parents as a whole. As David McClean further analyzes the
children and the problems in their nursery, he exclaims that This room is their mother and father, far
more important in their lives than their real parents (8). Wendy and Peter have made the relationship
with their parents obsolete, as they now consider the nursery a substitute for their mom and dad.
Overall, the Hadley children have completely replaced their parents with technology, displaying the
cautions of technology straining familial relationships. Next, the Hadley s reliance on technology
revolves around and takes over their daily lives, restricting the way they should be functioning as
humans. The HappyLife home that the

Third Party Logistic Services
2.1.2 Description of third party logistic services providers
According to various studies, Berglund et al. (1999) explain that third party logistics has several
definitions that are an activities consisting of transportation and management, and warehousing on
behalf of the shipper are carried out. Wilding and Juriado (2004) define that a company who solely
operates for the provision of logistics related single or multiple services on a contractual basis, is
called Third Party Logistics Company. Especially, the true third party logistics companies provide a
solution to the problem in the supply chain by incorporating multiple logistics services that are
managed solely or together (Schary and Larsen, 1995). Coltman, Gattorna and Whiting (2010) suggest
that third party logistics companies must create a large range of services to meet their distinct needs. A
definition by Lieb et al. (1993) explain that 3PL providers can assist the whole processes of supply
chain or just only selected activities depending on a company s preference. It is also conclude the
definition of outsourced logistics services that the employ of external firms to provide logistics
services for the whole or selected logistics activities within the process that have traditionally been
performed within an organization is the outsourced logistics. The roles performed by the 3PL
providers can be making especially to customers requirements (The Client Company) derived from
market demands and conditions.

Working Towards Your Dream Job
Working Towards Your Dream Job At some point in our lives, the majority of us will find ourselves
searching for a job. From deciding what position you want, to following up after an interview, you
must be intentional about your decisions throughout the job search process. Figuring out the job you
actually want might be the toughest and most important part of this. If you are working on a degree or
certification for a specific career, my advice is to search for an entry level position with a company
that you will be able to use your degree/certification in one day. Even if filing documents or sweeping
a warehouse isn t your dream job, doing these tasks at your dream company is one of the best ways to
realize your long term goal. This will not only be beneficial to you, as you will be getting firsthand
experience with the company to see if it is a place you really want to work for, but the hiring manager
for the entry level position could see you as a long term investment, which will give you a leg up on
the competition. Also, most companies prefer to promote within the organization, so once you
complete your degree and a position is open, you will have that extra boost in your favor. Once you
decide what job you re after, you need to prepare your resume. The resume should be clean, simple,
and no more than two pages. Keep it updated with any major accomplishments, but other than that,
leave it alone. Send your resume only when you know that the company is hiring for

Unnatural Causes Essay
Contrary to what many people believe, America s health status is not quite up to par, to say the least.
Over forty seven million people in the United States lack health insurance; that is more than 15% of
our nation s population! At first this disturbing truth seems impossible to believe, being as America is
one of the most technologically advanced and economically developed countries in the world. We
spend trillions of dollars per year on medical care. That s nearly half of all the health dollars spent in
the world. But we ve seen our statistics. We live shorter, often sicker lives than almost every other
industrialized nation. We rank 30th in [global] life expectancy (Adelman 2008). Knowing this brings
rise to the question: why are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, there is Jim Taylor, Hospital CEO, District 16; second, Tondra Young, Clinical Lab Supervisor,
District 24; lastly, Corey Anderson, Floor Technician, District 21. The population of each district
decreases in average income, education level and life expectancy than its preceding district, beginning
with district 16, Jim Taylor s district. District 16 has an average combined household income of
approximately $120,000/ annually. In this district, 65% of the population has a college degree and the
life expectancy in this district is 82 years. Whereas, Tondra Young s district, district 24, has an average
combined household income of $70,000/annually and 15% of the population has a college degree. The
life expectancy of district 24 is 75 years, that s 7 years less than district 16. In district 21, Corey
Anderson s district, the average combined household income is less than $50,000/ annually and only
5% of the districts population have college degrees. Consequently, the life expectancy of district 21 is
70 years, 5 years less than district 24 and 12 years less than district 16 (Adelman 2008). The results of
this study are indisputable: there is an obvious correlation between social/economic status and health
status. As each districts average income and education level decrease, average life expectancy
coincides. This leads to the next question: why does social and economic status so greatly influence
health status? One could supply many obvious reasons

Arguments For The New National Hockey League Rules
Arguments for the New National Hockey League Rules
On July 22, 2005, the National Hockey League Board of Governors approved a number of changes to
the rules of the National Hockey League (NHL). These rule changes were imposed to place a
purposeful need on the League to emphasize competition, players skills, and an entertainment value to
the game of ice hockey. These changes were reported, formulated, and brought to the Board of
Governors by a Competition Committee. The Competition Committee was comprised of four general
managers, four hockey players, and one owner. The general managers chosen were: Don Waddell of
Atlanta, Kevin Lowe of Edmonton, Bob Gainey of Montreal, and David Poile of Nashville. The NHL
players on the committee ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is true for most hockey fans. They like to see a lot of action in an NHL game shootout to
determine the winner of a game. This new rule will keep many people from turning off their
televisions at home and keep the average fan interested. The Fewer Stoppages, Increased Flow rule
states, Passes from behind the defensive blue line to the attacking blue line will be considered legal.
The center red line will be ignored for the purpose of the two line pass, as stated on the NHL FAQ s
webpage. (http://www.nhl.com/nhlhq/cba/rules_changes072205.html) Before the change of this rule, a
player was not allowed to make a pass from behind the defensive blue line to the attacking blue line
without a stoppage of play. The ability to make a two line pass gives teams an easier opportunity for
transitions in the neutral zone. Whereas before, a player had to make short cookie cutter passes
through the neutral zone and not many scoring opportunities were available. The opportunity for odd
man rushes is more evident also. Under this new rule, players and fans are more likely to see 2 1
without the red line. This puts a well needed pressure on defensemen, and a defensive player will
show more of his skating and passing talents. It will increase the value of the mobile defenseman,
stated the respectable General Manager of the Buffalo Sabers, Darcy Regier.
It has taken some time to adapt to the new NHL rules, both watching the game and playing the

State Of Consciousness
In Chapter 4 the topic that is discussed is the state of conscious and the different forms. Conscious is
defined as being the immediate awareness you have of mental activity, internal sensations and external
stimuli. Circadian rhythms become regulated by the master clock or suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN).
The SCN also reduces the amount of melatonin produced when light is detected. Having an increased
amount of melatonin causes sleepiness. The scientific understanding of sleep has changed due to the
invention of the electroencephalograph, which then produces an electroencephalogram. The
understanding of rapid eye movements also contributed the scientific understanding of sleep. With
sleep there are two types, which are REM and NREM sleep. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

the central nervous system to work correctly. Opiates are drugs that are also addictive, however they

Metabolic Syndrome Essay
Liver is known as the metabolic port of entry for any endobiotic and xenobiotic substance. The
anabolism and catabolism of most of the nutrients are in major performed by the liver. Carbohydrate,
protein and fat metabolism by the liver is of significance as the anomalies in metabolism of these
nutrients may introduce several types of metabolic syndromes. The protective effects of aqueous green
tea extract have been shown on hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia and liver dysfunction in diabetic and
obese rat models [74]. Different nutrients combinations were tested in a long term feeding in
experimental mouse model. Regional and continental food habit and practices are very much different.

Compared to diabetic control rats, total antioxidant levels were significantly increased in GTE
supplemented rats. Inversely, malondialdehyde levels and AT(1) receptor were significantly lower in
the GTE supplemented diabetic group [77]. Catechin and its derivatives in green tea are shown to be
therapeutically very effective.
Catechin has been shown to modulate the hepatic microsomal phospholipase A2 activities. It can
change the hepatic phospholipid species in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats [78]. On the other hand
epigallocatechin gallate, a constituent of green tea, represses the hepatic glucose production. EGCG
also mimics insulin by increasing phosphoinositide 3 kinase, mitogen activated protein kinase.
Furthermore, EGCG has been shown to regulate genes that encode gluconeogenic enzymes and
protein tyrosine phosphorylation by modulating the redox state of the cell. These finding suggest that
EGCG, or derivatives can perform as antidiabetic agent [79]. Green tea has also been shown in vivo to
down regulate the hepatic gluconeogenic gene expressions of enzymes. The results of this study
support the idea that green tea intake may be favorable in the prevention of diabetes mellitus [80].
Diabetes is multi causal disease. Even the onset of the disease is caused by a single factor but its
progression and pathogenesis may be attributed by a number of confounding factors. So, in some

The Death Penalty Is A Capital Punishment
What is the death penalty? The death penalty is a capital punishment that is punishable by death or
execution. This is usually given to people that have committed serious offences or capital crimes.
There are 31 states in the United States that are for the death penalty. Crimes that are punishable by
the death penalty, vary from state to state. Examples of such crimes are; first degree murder or
premeditated murder, murder with special circumstances, such as: intended, multiple, and murder
which involves another crime, rape with additional bodily harm, and the federal crime of treason. The
first known civilization to use some type of death penalty, were the Babylonian s. The Babylonians
developed a law called The Code of Hammurabi around the 1700 s BC, which consisted of twenty
five crimes, that were punishable by death. These crimes included adultery and helping slaves escape.
This code was to become the stepping stones of laws of many civilizations to come. In the Tenth
Century A.D., hanging became the usual method of execution in Britain. In the following next century,
William the Conqueror, king of England would not allow people to be executed for any crime, except
in times of war. This did not last, for in the Sixteenth Century, under the reign of Henry VIII, as many
as 72,000 people are estimated to have been executed, by boiling, burning at the stake, hanging, and
beheading. Capital punishment has had a long history in the United States. Before

Descriptive Essay About The Winter Concert
The sound of a dying cow, croaking its last breath . That was what my dad called the sound of me
playing my clarinet. Don t get me wrong, I love playing the clarinet and always tried my best, but 3rd
grade me was not that talented. To specify, I sounded truly horrible. All the beginner band students
(including me) had thought they were the best of the best. The greatest musicians in the world. Of
course, as you may know, 1st year players were nowhere near perfect no less professionals. And this
leads me to my school first concert of the year; The Winter Concert. We could not call it the Christmas
concert as I went to a public school. This was even though 95% of the kids were Christian/White and
most of the songs we sang and played were Christmas jingles. So, to continue, one of the songs we
played other than the obvious jingle bells, was hot cross buns. Clearly no concert is perfect and by far,
we screwed it up. By the end, none of the parents watching could tell the difference between the song
and the squeaks that were over powering the song . To conclude the concert, everyone s parents came
up to each of their sweet little kids and gave them flowers, hugs, and kisses. Mine came over and said,
You guys sounded like a herd being led to the slaughter house . Nah, just kidding said they loved it.
Their inner thoughts may have been a little different though. My 7th birthday was the first birthday I
actually celebrated with invited friends. Of course my parents were cheap and we had it at the park
instead of places like funtopia or chuckee cheeses, but it was fine. Really it was JUST FINE! I AM
NOT MAD! Just joking, I actually really enjoyed it. Most of the kids just came for the free pizza and
goodie bags at the end, but didn t we all at one point. I remember one time a group of me and my
friends went to this B day party of a girl we all hated... and avoided her the entire time! Ahhh, the
good old days where every kid was a bull, even to their fake friends, and no one got in trouble. Back
to what I was saying, so my party was all yay yay glitter, pink, sparkles, etc. until my brothers came.
Okay, so I have two brothers, one who is a year younger and one that s two years younger. You might
think aww

  • 2. Analysis Of A Night On The Town By Fats Makaye The topic of the essay that I have selected is called A night on the town: INSPECTOR FATS Makaye, IVORY PARK. Throughout this story, Fats Makaye has different attitudes towards his occupation of being a police officer which include being bitter, negative, disillusioned and demotivated, however Fats Makaye also shows a positive attitude throughout this story. Both of these attitudes are affected or shaped by either structure or agency. The term social structure is the complex framework of societal institutions (such as the economy, politics and religion) that makes up a society and that organises and establishes limits on people s behaviour (school of social sciences; department of sociology; SOCL 1014 SOCL 1009; IDENTITY AND SOCIETY; PART 1: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY COURSE WORKBOOK; Louise Hagemeier and Christine Bischoff; 2015: page 19). However the term agency is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices (Barker, Chris. 2005. Cultural Studies: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Makaye s attitude. Fat s negative attitude relates to specific events in his past that hinder his future to be promoted to a higher ranking officer. Mr. Makaye blames his being witheld from a promotion on the Apartheid system, which was once a law in South Africa until the year of 1994. Mr. Makaye states that he has not yet been promoted, because The old excuse was the exams (Altbeker, A. 2005. The Dirty Work of Democracy. Jhb: Jonathan Ball Publishers; chapter 12: page 205). Mr. Makaye goes on to elaborate that the exam was a trick to prevent the black police offers from been promoted to a higher ranking. The structural force in this instance is the one of Apartheid that would in the past prevent black police officers from receiving a promotion. Mr. Makaye uses the issue of the Apartheid system as an excuse to cover up his failure to a promotion in the future and allows him to retain his negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mnr Influence On America Since its birth in the late 18th century, the United States has arguably had one of the greatest global presences in human history. It has left its impact on most, if not all, nations currently in existence. In the past century, the United States has helped develop and manage many different countries around the world. In recent years the goal of this nation building and managing came in response to the spreading of communistic ideals. The United States, being a democratic and capitalistic nation, helped many nations avoid being led by communistic regimes. United States intervention has helped to prevent dictatorships, oppression, and genocide around the globe. Many of these interventions came during a key period of time of communistic ideology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The spreading of communistic ideals was a, if not the, primary focus of U.S. foreign policy. Even though both of these countries are thousands of miles and multiple continents away, the manner in which the U.S. intervened in both of these countries is strikingly similar. While communism was the root of both of these countries interventions, the MNR was not nearly as dangerous of a communist threat as the North Korean government. The communistic goals of the oppressive North Korean government were a much greater threat to democracy than the primarily economic goals that the MNR had. This is why war was imminent in Korea but in Bolivia it remained relatively peaceful. While both countries received financial and provisional aid from the United States, the reasoning behind this aid was different. In Bolivia the United States gave this aid in an attempt to stabilize their government and keep making economic profit from the tin industry in Bolivia. While aid in Korea was less for United States gain and more for the retention of democracy. Economically speaking, the case of Bolivia and South Korea turned out to have an extremely different impact. The aid that was given to Bolivia, in turn ruined their economy and drove them into deeper and deeper reliance upon the United States. In South Korea however, the South Korean people were able to capitalize on the aid they were given and turn it into a highly functional and profiting society. This is possibly because the Bolivians were never able to diversify their countries source of revenue as South Korea was able to, with it coming primarily from tin and oil. To this day the Bolivian people still have a dependence on the American government where the Korean and American government can almost be seen as equals. It would be a safe assumption to say that both the Korean and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It will be shown that codeswitching is instinctive and achieves overarching objectives such as serving the outcome of speech, defining identity and indirectly delineating aspects of the relationship between the participants, it lubricates the conversation by making it more fluid , and when English is used, brings clarity and precision, particularly to formal arrangements. Finally codeswitching from English as a component of metrolinguistics will be considered in relation to the data provided. The extracts are between G. D. This assertion might be challenged on the grounds of the need for a spontaneous response in a telephone call, giving insufficient time for a considered language choice. The second extract, between Jaya and Prathiba is conducted almost entirely in Kannada, as they have known each other for many years, and have a much closer working relationship. However the English words paperwork and legal clarification are used in 2.5, which is otherwise spoken in Kannada. These are loanwords and fill a vocabulary gap (Ibid. p. 264), for as Jaya says in her commentary I don t even know what the Kannada equivalent is , she refers to them as work words that are automatically embedded into Kannada. Another example of embedding can be found at 4.9 where sixth is used in a sentence spoken in Kannada, as Jaya comments we often embed English numbers into Kannada . At the beginning of excerpt 3 Jaya chooses to use Hindi rather than English, with her brother, who is on holiday visiting their father in India. Hindi was the language of their childhood in north India and this allows her to be more personal and rebuke him over her difficulty in reaching him on the telephone, so using Hindi in 3.1 she says and then I spoke to the entire world . This use demonstrates an aspect of stable bilingualism (Ibid. p. 294) in a multilingual family, in this context it can be called language maintenance (Ibid.) and it is ... • 5. Comparing and Contrasting Farm and Factory Jobs Essay Working on a farm or in a factory has both similarities and differences, but moving from a rural to a city job could be quite difficult. Farm and factory jobs are similar because they are dangerous and require intense physical labor. Both the farm and factory jobs have daily hazards. In 2009, farming continues to be the most dangerous job in the United States, due to the constant risk of animal stampedes or agricultural machinery accidents. In factories, like Grede Foundries, ear and eye protection against deafening crashes and flying sparks is required, as well as having all skin covered to prevent from hot metal burns. However, the most noticeable similarity is the amount of physical labor needed in both Wauwatosa and Elkhorn workplaces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At Krusen Grass Farms in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, almost all of the work is done outdoors, with the exception of making hay, milking, and pasteurizing. On the contrary, in Wauwatosa at Grede Foundries, all work is completed indoors. Beside work location differences, the typical work hours between farms and factories vary. In 2009, almost all farm owners (like Altfrid Krusenbaum) work seventy to eighty hours per week, year round. On the other end of the spectrum, factory laborers, at Grede Foundries, work forty hours per week and have off two or three days weekly. The final notable difference is the overall focus on nature or machinery; the simple, natural, wholesome farm life contrasts with the technical and mechanical responsibilities of a factory worker. Whether through work hours or work place, factory and farm laborers have a differing employment experience. The journey of a farm worker moving to a factory in United States history would be problematic, due to the change in environmental exposures. While the old homestead was relatively quiet, the industrialized factory was filled with deafening clamor, which could result in hearing loss. Also, mastering the new factory machinery could take time to learn, and lives may be sacrificed along the way. In the 1900s, the factory death rates rose because naĆÆve ... • 6. Health Disparities Of Prenatal Care One important health disparity is the lack of prenatal care amongst women in socially disadvantaged populations. These predominately include women of minorities, women who have a low income, and the location these women live in. This health disparity is important to address because research has shown that women who receive prenatal care are more likely to conceive babies of a healthy birth weight and have low infant mortality rates than those women who do not receive this prenatal care ( Putting Women s Health Disparities on the Map, 2009). Therefore, health disparities amongst women in need of prenatal care have lead to preventable infant mortalities amongst women in vulnerable populations. Three reasons why this health disparity is important to address include the following: health disparities in prenatal care lead to lack of access to prenatal care to women in vulnerable populations, there are increased adverse health outcomes for both the infant and mother, and there are excess medical expenses that could otherwise have been prevented. Because prematurity is the leading cause of newborn death in the United States ( Healthy Mothers and Healthy babies, 2013), finding and developing a solution will be extremely beneficial and needs to begin with addressing prenatal care. The first problem that needs to be addressed is simply the lack of access for women in vulnerable populations to prenatal care. This is a major problem because we see that the rate of women who ... • 7. The Influence Of The Ancient Roman Gladiatorial Games The Roman gladiator captivated the masses and contributed to the very definition of ancient Rome. The consumption and coverage of football in America today is the modern equivalent to how gladiatorial games fit into the entertainment and overall culture of the ancient Roman world, with the gladiatorial games holding even deeper importance regarding spirituality. In a society built through the balancing of bloodshed and civility, the ancient Roman gladiator made his impact through spectacle by pure carnage. From 264 BC to AD 404, the Roman people were captivated by gladiators; their appeal remained constant through shifts in power and changes in overall purpose. The purpose of Roman gladiatorial combat went from being to honor the dead and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since these early contests were held graveside at funerals, there were no large audiences and the main purpose of the games was not to entertain masses of people. Also, the use of games as a funeral rite was only somewhat popular at the higher levels of society with aristocrats, making demand for the games somewhat of a niche market. A shift in the nature and purpose of Roman gladiatorial games occurred in 264 BC at the funeral of Roman consul Julius Brutus Pera. This fight was different because it was put on in the public eye. The fight was pitched at a public oxen market and featured three contests at the same time . This escalation of public appeal and increase in overall size of event marked an important shift from private display of honor and deference to public display of spectacle and entertainment. The practice of Roman gladiatorial games being used as public displays of wealth, power, and status was also born at the funeral of Brutus Pera, adding display of societal standing to the purpose of gladiatorial games. The demand for gladiatorial games rose sharply from this point forward, so naturally, Rome had to supply more of what the people were demanding. To meet the demand for bigger, better, and more frequent gladiatorial games, gladiator trainers or lanistaes used multiple points of supply to find bodies to train. Most gladiators were slaves taken from conquered lands or prisoners of war. Convicted criminals also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Essay on Brothers of the Bible Brothers of the Bible The Old Testament sibling rivalries between Cain and Abel, Esau and Jacob, and Joseph and his brothers were similar in some ways and different in others, but they all hold lessons for us today, for brothers today still face many of the same problems in life that challenged brothers thousands of years ago. Cain and Abel were in a situation much more unique than Esau and Jacob, and Joseph and his brothers faced, for the society they lived in was extremely small, and they each had a direct relationship with God. As the book of Genesis tells us, Cain was the first born son of Adam and Eve. Their next son was a boy whom they named Abel. As Cain and Abel grew up both took responsibilities for making a living. Abel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cain takes the road of denial rather than hiding from God; even more, he turns the question back to God implying impropriety in God?s question. ?Keeping? is not something human beings do to one another in the Old testament; only God keeps human beings; hence God should know the answer to the question. (Abingdon, 373) Another unique element of the Cain and Abel rivalry and its tragic aftermath is that God personally punished Cain for the murder of Abel, and sent him into exile. But God also showed some mercy to Cain which protected him from harm at the hands of others by putting a mark upon him. The narrator leaves him as one who has been placed under the very special care of God. Hence, the story ought not to be interpreted in basically negative terms, but rather as the activity of one who lives under divine protection and care. (Abingdon, 375) The sibling rivalry between Jacob and Esau didn?t result from envy due to God?s reaction to their sacrifices, but from envy over parental favoritism. In addition to this, the rivalry also involved a number of other factors and began even before they were born. As God explained to Rebekah when the twins were still in her womb, ?the two children inside you will become the fathers of two nations. Just like the two are fighting with each other now, the two nations will struggle with each other. One will be stronger than the other. and the older will serve the younger.? The United States in the Korean War was criticized, fairly, for its strategy, but the need to defend South Korea was never questioned. In only the Vietnam War was the United States very participation criticized. This is such a gigantic change with prior wars that it bears study as to why it happened, and better yet, should have it happened. This paper will discuss the United States involvement in the Vietnam War, by asking the simple question, Should have the Untied States gotten involved into the first place. This paper will prove that in fact, America should have not gotten involved with the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War took place in between 1947 1975. It consisted of North Vietnam trying to make South Vietnam a communism government. The United States later joined this conflict because of the stress North Vietnam was putting to South Vietnam to become a government that America did not want. The main reason why America joined was because of a theory called the Domino Effect. America and Russia were going through what has been dubbed the Cold War. • 10. Natural Sweetener Vs Natural Sugar Artificial Sweetener vs. Natural Sugar Is there anything SWEET about artificial sugar? Well, over the years there have been many different kinds of sweeteners that have been tested in labs to see how they affect our bodies. The first big artificial sweetener first got discovered in 1897, when a John Hopkins University researcher accidentally forgot to wash his hands before lunch after doing tests in a lab. He tasted something sweet on his finger, and that was the start of Saccharin. Today, many people use sweeteners like Splenda, Sweet N Low, Equal, and Truvia to sweeten their food and drinks. To begin with, natural sugar is a kind of sugar that is naturally in food and cannot be made or put into them. For example, this kind of sugar can be found in fruit as fructose and dairy products such as milk and cheese as lactose. Also, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Foods with natural sugar have an important role in the diet of cancer patients and anyone trying to prevent cancer because they provide essential nutrients that keep the body healthy and help prevent disease. Then, eating natural organic sugar doesn t just keep you healthier, but it also helps the environment protection and the reduce of pollution by not using more chemicals to grow plants. Along from the 1700 s to now the 20th century, we ask ourselves why does your race and religion matter still? I would like to think that racism should not even matter based off what is now happening today. Within the essay I will discuss to the reader about three stories that to me had many similarities in comparisons; with controversy, racial segregation and biblical context. I will explain how the text related subject of racial profiling which showed a symbolic idol of (God) in the form of faith during these early times. I will then speak on the controversy that the narrator tried to convey the audience to mimic harsh opinions on certain characters. The last I will speak upon how religion was quoted throughout this paper in the stories. My argument is why did race play such a prime factor in the 17th and 18th century and continues to take place in the 20th century still? As I read the stories I will briefly speak about Mary Rowlandson, Iroquois Creation, and Benito Cereno. All three stories are coming from the (Norton, Anthology American Literature) Vol A B. The first overview will be on Rowlandson, next will be Iroquois Creation, followed by Benito Cereno. The boy who serves as the main character of the story introduces religious symbolism and imagery all throughout the story. The narrator who I assume to boy, references many abstract and tangible things from a religious perspective. For this writing assignment, I will identify four specific places in the text that is associated with religion, explain why I have this chose to be in reference to religion and lastly I will explain what the religious imagery reveals as far the boy s character. Early in the text, the boy discusses going to the market with his aunt. While going to the market, he observes his surroundings and makes several religious connections. He imagines himself carrying a chalice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the text, he seems to be confused and gets caught between his thoughts for the girl versus his spiritual thoughts. Specifically for the chalice imagery, I found this to be associated with the boy s obsession to the girl. The way the chalice is held is the way the boy wishes to hold the girl. I think the religious imagery of the apple tree is associated with the boy s temptation and loss of innocence for the girl. The boy has already given in spiritually to the girl by having lust for her, therefore he feels though he has bitten the forbidden fruit and lost his knowledge; his initial knowledge of knowing Christ. In this case of selling products it was a massive drawback for Jessops but turned out to be an advantage for competitors such as Amazon. The increased number of internet users leads to benefits for Amazon who thrive off increased internet usage due to consumers finding it a cheaper alternative to Jessops. The internet can also be a good source of primary market research which enables firms such as Amazon to analyze prices of different websites. This would give the opportunity for Amazon to perhaps reduce prices or introduce offers which would help them sell more products. I believe it is entirely up to the company, this kind of competition would perhaps not effect Amazon due to their size in the market and their reliability where customers instantly visit Amazon knowing they will be given a fair price and receive their purchased item quickly. However, men did not solely ask for their hand in marriage, they also had to formulate something to say. In the books Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, there are two men who decide to propose to someone they take liking in. Those men are William Collins who proposes to Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) and Bradley Headstone who proposes to Lizzie Hexam. Although both of the men s proposal resulted in rejection, one of the proposals had better diction than the other. Over the years, many individuals have been unfortunate to face the devastating effects of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, among others. However, the emergence of yet another deadly disease known as AIDS has again complicated matters. AIDS has proved to be one of the most fatal health condition across the world, and its impact in the society has grown to be a major global challenge today. The disease is essentially caused by the HIV virus, which can be spread from one person to another through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, and sharing of cutting and piecing instruments with an infected person (Shukla, 2014). AIDS has not only claimed the lives of millions of people, but also has its economic implications to the nations of the world. Although various treatment procedures have been designed to help address this health threat, such as the use of antiretroviral therapies, the disease, and its associated effects, can only be dealt with effectively through the development of HIV/AIDS vaccine. Vaccination has gained great recognition as the most effective way of controlling and managing several fatal health conditions. Thanks to Edward Jenner s successful attempt on small pox, vaccines have been designed to help protect the human body against many diseases that would have otherwise caused massive deaths across the world (Macaulay, 2016). Think of what would have happened if all of these diseases were not prevented, and had to attack someone so that they are dealt with such as the case of the AIDS disease. It is very evident that once a disease has found its way into the human body, it acts as a trigger to several other issues that affect the various aspects of human life. Metzl and Hansen (2014) mention that diseases are normally in a complex relationship with every aspect of human life, and preventing them is very necessary. This is where vaccination comes handy. Lee mentioned that Asian American students are viewed as a model minority, and there is this model minority stereotype that causes many teachers to expect greater things from their Asian students. However, I discovered something interesting, that two of my Asian interviewees actually believed in the stereotype, and thought of themselves as academically superior. This is very true for my Asian American friend who said that she felt extremely proud to have the American English accent and White culture, and at the same time having the intelligence of the Asian brain. This can be related to the reading when one of the Korean students responded, We are smarter. I mean, I don t think it s a stereotype look at our report cards. • 36. Theme Of Technology In The Veldt Technology is viewed as revolutionary, inventions that make our lives simply better by the touch of a screen to the click of a button. However, in the short story The Veldt , Ray Bradbury portrays that technology, despite its benefits, has many significant flaws. The improper and overuse of technology in The Veldt causes the characters to forget how to live for themselves. The technology takes over their independence as well as their personal lives and relationships. In The Veldt , Ray Bradbury asserts that becoming reliant on technology causes a strain on family relations, and can be dangerous to the way one functions as a human, taking away one s purpose in life. To begin with, the Hadley family abuses the luxurious technology in their home, which leads to the replacement of love and real relationships to that of technology. The dynamic of the Hadley family is influenced by technology, and its overuse causes the hindrance of affection in the children s relationship with their parents. When psychologist David McClean comes to discuss the problematic African Veldt in the nursery, he realizes the root of the problem and says: You ve let this room and this house replace you and your wife in your children s affections (Bradbury 8). This quote conveys that as much as the children have fallen in love with their nursery, it is taking away the love they should have for their parents. Additionally, the Hadley children, Peter and Wendy, are replacing their parents with their beloved nursery, completely shutting out their parents as a whole. As David McClean further analyzes the children and the problems in their nursery, he exclaims that This room is their mother and father, far more important in their lives than their real parents (8). Wendy and Peter have made the relationship with their parents obsolete, as they now consider the nursery a substitute for their mom and dad. Overall, the Hadley children have completely replaced their parents with technology, displaying the cautions of technology straining familial relationships. Next, the Hadley s reliance on technology revolves around and takes over their daily lives, restricting the way they should be functioning as humans. The HappyLife home that the ... Wilding and Juriado (2004) define that a company who solely operates for the provision of logistics related single or multiple services on a contractual basis, is called Third Party Logistics Company. Especially, the true third party logistics companies provide a solution to the problem in the supply chain by incorporating multiple logistics services that are managed solely or together (Schary and Larsen, 1995). Coltman, Gattorna and Whiting (2010) suggest that third party logistics companies must create a large range of services to meet their distinct needs. A definition by Lieb et al. • 38. Working Towards Your Dream Job Working Towards Your Dream Job At some point in our lives, the majority of us will find ourselves searching for a job. From deciding what position you want, to following up after an interview, you must be intentional about your decisions throughout the job search process. Figuring out the job you actually want might be the toughest and most important part of this. If you are working on a degree or certification for a specific career, my advice is to search for an entry level position with a company that you will be able to use your degree/certification in one day. Even if filing documents or sweeping a warehouse isn t your dream job, doing these tasks at your dream company is one of the best ways to realize your long term goal. This will not only be beneficial to you, as you will be getting firsthand experience with the company to see if it is a place you really want to work for, but the hiring manager for the entry level position could see you as a long term investment, which will give you a leg up on the competition. Also, most companies prefer to promote within the organization, so once you complete your degree and a position is open, you will have that extra boost in your favor. Once you decide what job you re after, you need to prepare your resume. The resume should be clean, simple, and no more than two pages. Keep it updated with any major accomplishments, but other than that, leave it alone. Send your resume only when you know that the company is hiring for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Unnatural Causes Essay Contrary to what many people believe, America s health status is not quite up to par, to say the least. Over forty seven million people in the United States lack health insurance; that is more than 15% of our nation s population! At first this disturbing truth seems impossible to believe, being as America is one of the most technologically advanced and economically developed countries in the world. We spend trillions of dollars per year on medical care. That s nearly half of all the health dollars spent in the world. But we ve seen our statistics. We live shorter, often sicker lives than almost every other industrialized nation. We rank 30th in [global] life expectancy (Adelman 2008). Knowing this brings rise to the question: why are ... First, there is Jim Taylor, Hospital CEO, District 16; second, Tondra Young, Clinical Lab Supervisor, District 24; lastly, Corey Anderson, Floor Technician, District 21. The population of each district decreases in average income, education level and life expectancy than its preceding district, beginning with district 16, Jim Taylor s district. District 16 has an average combined household income of approximately $120,000/ annually. In this district, 65% of the population has a college degree and the life expectancy in this district is 82 years. Whereas, Tondra Young s district, district 24, has an average combined household income of $70,000/annually and 15% of the population has a college degree. The life expectancy of district 24 is 75 years, that s 7 years less than district 16. In district 21, Corey Anderson s district, the average combined household income is less than $50,000/ annually and only 5% of the districts population have college degrees. Consequently, the life expectancy of district 21 is 70 years, 5 years less than district 24 and 12 years less than district 16 (Adelman 2008). The results of this study are indisputable: there is an obvious correlation between social/economic status and health status. As each districts average income and education level decrease, average life expectancy coincides. This leads to the next question: why does social and economic status so greatly influence health status? One could supply many obvious reasons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Arguments For The New National Hockey League Rules Arguments for the New National Hockey League Rules On July 22, 2005, the National Hockey League Board of Governors approved a number of changes to the rules of the National Hockey League (NHL). These rule changes were imposed to place a purposeful need on the League to emphasize competition, players skills, and an entertainment value to the game of ice hockey. These changes were reported, formulated, and brought to the Board of Governors by a Competition Committee. The Competition Committee was comprised of four general managers, four hockey players, and one owner. The center red line will be ignored for the purpose of the two line pass, as stated on the NHL FAQ s webpage. (http://www.nhl.com/nhlhq/cba/rules_changes072205.html) Before the change of this rule, a player was not allowed to make a pass from behind the defensive blue line to the attacking blue line without a stoppage of play. The ability to make a two line pass gives teams an easier opportunity for transitions in the neutral zone. Whereas before, a player had to make short cookie cutter passes through the neutral zone and not many scoring opportunities were available. The opportunity for odd man rushes is more evident also. Under this new rule, players and fans are more likely to see 2 1 without the red line. This puts a well needed pressure on defensemen, and a defensive player will show more of his skating and passing talents. It will increase the value of the mobile defenseman, stated the respectable General Manager of the Buffalo Sabers, Darcy Regier. Conscious is defined as being the immediate awareness you have of mental activity, internal sensations and external stimuli. Circadian rhythms become regulated by the master clock or suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN also reduces the amount of melatonin produced when light is detected. Having an increased amount of melatonin causes sleepiness. Compared to diabetic control rats, total antioxidant levels were significantly increased in GTE supplemented rats. Inversely, malondialdehyde levels and AT(1) receptor were significantly lower in the GTE supplemented diabetic group [77]. Catechin and its derivatives in green tea are shown to be therapeutically very effective. Catechin has been shown to modulate the hepatic microsomal phospholipase A2 activities. It can change the hepatic phospholipid species in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats [78]. On the other hand epigallocatechin gallate, a constituent of green tea, represses the hepatic glucose production. EGCG also mimics insulin by increasing phosphoinositide 3 kinase, mitogen activated protein kinase. Furthermore, EGCG has been shown to regulate genes that encode gluconeogenic enzymes and protein tyrosine phosphorylation by modulating the redox state of the cell. These finding suggest that EGCG, or derivatives can perform as antidiabetic agent [79]. Green tea has also been shown in vivo to down regulate the hepatic gluconeogenic gene expressions of enzymes. The results of this study support the idea that green tea intake may be favorable in the prevention of diabetes mellitus [80]. Diabetes is multi causal disease. Even the onset of the disease is caused by a single factor but its progression and pathogenesis may be attributed by a number of confounding factors. So, in some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Descriptive Essay About The Winter Concert The sound of a dying cow, croaking its last breath . That was what my dad called the sound of me playing my clarinet. Don t get me wrong, I love playing the clarinet and always tried my best, but 3rd grade me was not that talented. To specify, I sounded truly horrible. All the beginner band students (including me) had thought they were the best of the best. The greatest musicians in the world. Of course, as you may know, 1st year players were nowhere near perfect no less professionals. And this leads me to my school first concert of the year; The Winter Concert. We could not call it the Christmas concert as I went to a public school. This was even though 95% of the kids were Christian/White and most of the songs we sang and played were Christmas jingles. So, to continue, one of the songs we played other than the obvious jingle bells, was hot cross buns. Clearly no concert is perfect and by far, we screwed it up. By the end, none of the parents watching could tell the difference between the song and the squeaks that were over powering the song . To conclude the concert, everyone s parents came up to each of their sweet little kids and gave them flowers, hugs, and kisses. Mine came over and said, You guys sounded like a herd being led to the slaughter house . Nah, just kidding said they loved it. Their inner thoughts may have been a little different though. My 7th birthday was the first birthday I actually celebrated with invited friends. Of course my parents were cheap and we had it at the park instead of places like funtopia or chuckee cheeses, but it was fine. Really it was JUST FINE! I AM NOT MAD! Just joking, I actually really enjoyed it. Most of the kids just came for the free pizza and goodie bags at the end, but didn t we all at one point. I remember one time a group of me and my friends went to this B day party of a girl we all hated... and avoided her the entire time! Ahhh, the good old days where every kid was a bull, even to their fake friends, and no one got in trouble. Back to what I was saying, so my party was all yay yay glitter, pink, sparkles, etc. until my brothers came. Okay, so I have two brothers, one who is a year younger and one that s two years younger.
