The Goal of the United States Criminal Justice System
Within the United States Criminal Justice System, it is not only goal to simply punish those who break
the law, but to also reduce the level of criminal activity. In order to fulfill this important aspect of the
Criminal Justice System, offenders must be rehabilitated and motivated to refrain from engaging in
further criminal activity so that they do not return to prison. Since the early 1990 s, our country s
crime rate has been declining. Studies such as the Pew Safety Performance Project point out that this
is an important goal for correctional systems to keep in mind, but it is not the only one. Pew Safety
believes that ensuring the taxpayer dollars are spent effectively is also an important aspect of the
correctional system. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A study such as Samuel Himelstein s Meditation Research: The State of the Art in Correctional
Settings, explores and reviews empirical research regarding the effects of meditation based programs
in correctional populations. In other words, Himelstein takes into account different forms of treatment
aimed at rehabilitating prisoners so that they refrain from recidivism and are not placed back into jail.
Himelstein looks at treatments such as Transcendental Meditation, Mindfulness Based Stress
Reduction, and Vipassana Meditation, and looks at insights and results from researchers such as APA
member and professor of Psychology Craig Hanley, professor of Psychology Ruth A. Baer, and more
insightful results from numerous researchers. Himelstein s article analyzes how inmates who
participate in meditation based programs displayed decreased anxiety, aggressiveness, hostility,
substance use, and recidivism of incarceration, and examines an increased social, interpersonal, and
overall psychological well being in inmate participants (Himelstein, 647). Methods In the Pew Safety
Performance Project, researchers analyzed the returns to prison for 33 for inmates who were released
in 1999, and analyzed a separate group of inmates from 41 states that were released in 2004 (two
cohorts). The fact that Pew analyzed returns in this way, it was

Establishing a high speed and reliable lighthouse area network will significantly boost the bed and
breakfast s appeal for guests, and help bring the lighthouse into the digital era. Using a wireless mesh
network will be more flexible and cheaper than an old fashioned wired local area network (LAN).
That is beside the fact that wireless networks are easy to install, expand, and have the additional
advantage of presenting a portable wireless link to the bed and breakfast residents.
This internet networking project will be made up of two distinctive phases. In Phase I, a small scale
network will be developed. The lessons learnt in Phase I will appraise the plan for Phase II, in which
the network will be expanded to include the whole area that the lighthouse lays claim to. The final
network will back wireless connectivity between guests and the bed and breakfast intranet services at
data speeds approximating 54 Mbps. The services that will be delivered to include Web sites, email,
and contact with the internet.

The World s Columbian Exposition
In 1893, The World s Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago to celebrate the 400th anniversary of
Christopher Columbus s arrival in the New World and to show how America has grown and
progressed since then. In conjunction with the world fair, was the Parliament of the World Religions,

The Great Awakening occured in the spring and summer of 1735 associated with a revivalist preacher
and Congregationalist Protestant of the name Jonathan Edwards. Though their is great debate around
the exact effect and correlation the so named Great Awakening had on the cause of the American
Revolution, many did and still believe today that it was The Great Awakening that got people ready
for the revolution and without it, the American Revolution would have never occured. By giving The
Great Awakening and John Edwards preaching so much power it causes one religion, Protestanism, to
become compatable as a part of the American identity. By associated Protestantism with an American
identity it reveals the founders hypocrisy when they stated in the Bill of Rights that Congress shall
make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof when it
seems indeed a single religion is being promoted as the American religion. However, this could also
simply be because of the confusion in definitions and what peoples views on church and state s
relationship is and or should be on its promotion of a religion. This issue was brought up on page 89
of the reader, when in 1818 in Connecticut, Baptists argued that the state should support all churches
equally while Thomas Jefferson argued that

Don Simon Bolivar Research Paper
Born in Caracas, Nueva Granada, in July 24, 1783, Don Simón José Antonio De La Santísima
Trinidad Bolívar was born to his mother María de La Concepción Palacios y Blanco and his father
Juan Vicente Bolívar y Ponte. At the time, their family was of the wealthiest in the area, owning a
majority of Venezuelan land. Don Simon Bolivar was one of 4 in which he had two older sisters,
Maria Antonia, Juana and his brother, Juan Vicente. Bolivar s father had passed by the age of two, in
which he played a minimal role in the life of young Don Simon Bolivar. By the age of nine, his
mother had passed. During an early age of his child hood, Don Simon Bolivar was placed under the

The period between 1813 and July of 1814, known as the Second Republic, is in reality the Terrible
Year of Venezuelan History. The War to Death decree creates a furor, and the combats and indecisive
battles, won or lost, follow one upon the other with increasing rapidity. Despite important victories,
Bolívar as well as General Santiago Mariño (who had previously liberated the eastern areas of the
nation) find themselves obliged to give way in the face of a more numerous adversary led by the
royalist José Tomás Boves.
Boves emerges victorious from the La Puerta battle (June of 1814), and the patriots are forced to
evacuate Caracas. A massive emigration towards the east takes place. There, Bolívar and Mariño see
their authority challenged by their own companions at arms. The Liberator finds again fraternal
asylum in Nueva Granada, where he intervenes with some measures of success in internal political
struggles which enable the city of Bogotá to find a place in the newly established United Provinces. In
May of 1815, in Cartagena, Bolívar resigns his command to avoid the outbreak of civil war. In 1816,
with Alexandre s help, he returned to Venezuela and their forces seized Angostura after beating the

Mecom And Fado Women
The role that women play in society has changed and evolved numerous times throughout our nation s
history. Women have been viewed as both pious and ungodly, chaste and immoral, and both precious
and worthless. However, what has continued to remain constant in the lives of women is the
unchanging feeling of inequality and insufficiency compared to their male counterparts. Those
feelings endured by women are decidedly timeless, no matter what other circumstances exist within
their lives. There are indeed similarities between the lives of the women in Lepore s biography Book
of Ages and Wilson s autobiographical novel Our Nig. Both Frado and Jane Franklin Mecom were
born at a disadvantage because of the sole fact that they were female. They each ... Show more content

As Camp discusses in her book Closer to Freedom, freedom of movement and the restriction of space
are greatly important to the idea and demonstration of power. When women of any race were
restricted in their movement, many of their freedoms became limited. Regional cultures and territorial
societal norms helped determine exactly what responsibilities and duties women were expected to bear
throughout their lives. A woman s geographic location was also imperative to the amount of power
they held within their own households. While men were in fact the heads of household in all regions

Reduce Alcohol-Impaired Driving
Introduction Every year thousands of innocent bystanders are killed in alcohol related motor vehicle
accidents. In fact, according to the CDC, nearly 1 in every 3 traffic related fatalities in the United
States involves a drunk driver (Centers for Disease Control, 2016). Data from the National Institutes
of Health showed that in 2009 approximately 30 people died in alcohol related collisions per day
(approximately 11,000 deaths per year) (Ying 2013). The problem is not consistent across the country,
however, with data showing that U.S. alcohol related fatalit[ies] are regional and more prevalent in the
south and west (Ying 2013). The issue is especially startling in the state of Texas, which is
consistently at the forefront of drunk driving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In deterrence, rather than attempting to lobby for new legislation, our goal will be to publicize the
existing laws that prohibit drinking and driving; specifically, we aim to inform people about the large
penalties associated with breaking these laws. That being said, we will not be relying on fear appeals
to propel our message. Fear appeals, such as detailing the tragic deaths of innocent bystanders due to
intoxicated drivers, can potentially increase undesirable behavior (Centers for Disease Control, 2016).
In comparison, messages based on establishing or shaping social norms can have an extremely
positive effect. As such, communications and outreach is truly the foundation of our proposed
program. Our series of workshops aims to educate and inform drivers about the specific consequences
and costs of drinking and driving. With wide enough implementation and reach, these workshops have
the potential to help form societal norms that deter drunk driving through peer pressure. In a study, a
paid media campaign was developed with the normative message, MOST Montana Young Adults (4
out of 5) Don t Drink and Drive. By the end of the campaign, there was a 13.7% decrease in young
adults who reported driving after drinking relative to a comparison community (Centers for Disease
Control, 2016). This example demonstrates the

Ohio State Prison Tragedy
Tragedy The Ohio State Penitentiary fire claimed the lives of many in 1930. The fire was set with the
intent of causing a distraction to allow a few to escape the prison walls. This did not go to plan and
instead, the prison was set ablaze when everyone was locked securely in their cells for the evening. It
quickly got out of control and the fire, combined with poor prison conditions, lead to the death of 322
victims becoming the worst prison fire in the world at the time. From this tragedy, new fire codes were
developed as well as new measures taken in the prison system to assure such a situation never happen

At the time, prison cells were still operated by a turnkey system, which required each cell be opened
individually by a guard with a key (The Ohio Penitentiary). There wasn t any kind of central
unlocking device. Thus, as flames, carbon monoxide, and toxic fumes spread through the cell block,
inmates had nowhere to run, and many died of oxygen deprivation and smoke inhalation (The Ohio
Penitentiary). There is much confusion surrounding what actually went on during the fire. While there
are stories of guards purposely leaving inmates locked in their cells, there are also stories of heroism
displayed by both the inmates and guards alike. Stories of both sides working together to free as many
from the blaze as possible and stories of inmates going back in time and time again to rescue victims
only to succumb to the blaze themselves as well. It is believed however, that Warden Preston E.
Thomas refused to release prisoners until the Ohio National Guard responded in fear of a riot. By the

Cop Job Stress

Lights flashing, sirens blaring through the streets of Albany, New York. A cop is involved in a high
speed car chase. In order to escape the crook breaks through the fence of a local airport. The cops
blocked him in the middle of the runway and sent him to jail. This is one of the high stress situations
that cops are involved in every day. They have ways of dealing with these stressors. Cops know that
there are stressful and scary things to come from working as a police officer. Even when police
officers deal with high stress dangerous situations on the job they can still live a healthy personal life.
Stress levels were not as bad as they are today but there were still some stress (Reedy). 20 years ago
and beyond there not as many dash cams in cop cars. The lack of dash cams lead to cops having more
freedom. More freedom lead to less stress. One cop said that when he first started being a cop they
would go out to bars and drink in the parking lot while on the job (Reedy). Sense the 20 years ago and

Examples Of Peer Review The Devil s Advocate
Peer Review: The Devil s Advocate
The legal thriller directed by Taylor Hackford , The Devil s Advocate , cleverly has an entertaining
morality play. This movie is not about being someone s Devil s Advocate but actually reflect the devil
himself. The movie reviewed by my peer, Aastha Saluja, turns out to be charged heavily on moral and
ethical questions and the review successfully brings out the relation of law and morality. The movie
avoids clumsy moralization and old hat notions of good and evil. The review written by Aastha very
well portrays the question whether winning is everything in the legal profession . By aptly identifying
the core theme of the movie, my peer begins her review with an efficiently written introduction. ...

Going after success and its trappings when it gets out of hand has been successfully identified by my
peer when she talks about how Kevin fought his own conscience for his greed. However she did not
elaborate it by telling how ambition is not very rewarding in the long run. She also failed to talk about
how he knew his bible. He could quote the verses his mother referred to which can be seen in the very
beginning of the movie when he finishes a verse referred by his mother. Throughout the movie he
wrestles with his calling and his passion. This was not mentioned in her review. In this review she fails
to connect the title The Devil s Advocate of the movie to what it actually means. According to me, the
title has two aspects. First being the actual meaning of the word. Devil s advocate is a person
appointed by the Roman Catholic Church to challenge a proposed beatification or canonization, or the
verification of a miracle. Secondly, how the title indirectly talks about the Devil himself. This movie is
about Satan and sin. This movie however does not laud sin but exposes it as the tools of a devious,

The Effects Of Endocrine Changes In Premenopausal Women
In ageing individuals, endocrine changes result in a decline in endocrine function involving the
responsiveness of tissues as well as reduced hormone secretion from peripheral glands.
With salubrious ageing there are changes in endocrine systems, including oestrogen, testosterone,
magnification hormone/insulin like magnification factor I axis, hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis,
hypothalamic pituitary cortisol axis and dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulphate.
In evaluating the changes that occur in endocrine function, it is paramount to distinguish between the

As there is a certain proportion of middle aged and older men with serum total testosterone levels
below the reference range for puerile adult males, there is a suggestion that supplementing
testosterone in older men with low testosterone levels into a range that is mid mundane for salubrious,
adolescent men may avert or reverse the effects of ageing.
A double blind placebo controlled study showed that GH with or without sex steroids in salubrious
women and men aged 65 88 years incremented lean body mass and decremented fat mass.
These findings were kindred to an antecedent randomized, controlled, double blind tribulation in
1996, in which 52 salubrious men aged 69 years with well preserved functional facility but low

Direct age cognate changes need to be distinguished from indirect alterations caused by simultaneous
thyroid or non thyroidal illness, or other physiological or pathophysiological states whose incidence
increases with age.
Several vicissitudes formerly believed to be a direct result of the senescent process have subsequently
been shown to be due to the incremented prevalence of subclinical thyroid disease and/or the result of
non thyroidal illness.
Thyroid hormone clearance decreases with age, but thyroid hormone secretion is withal reduced,
leading to unchanged total and free serum thyroxine concentrations 54.

always true that while indeed separate, these facilities are far from equal. Throughout the segregated

problem. Gathering information from the data is what Art Costa s calls his first level of Questioning,
which is gathering information (Daws Schiro, 2008). Students must have a good understanding of
mean, median, and mode before solving this type of statistical problem. Median and mode are often
easily found Van De Walle, Karp, and Bay Williams have defined mean in two different conceptual
understandings.
According to Van De Walle, Karp Bay Williams there are two distinct interpretations for the
understanding of mean (2013). The definition of mean is to find the middle number in the set of data.
A real explanation is to spread the data evenly across all the data points where each data point is the
same as the sum, which is thirty six, refer to illustration 2. Understanding the term mean is crucial
when working with statistical problems. The first explanation of the term mean can be better
understood in the classroom when students are working on an activity

Incorporating Conflict Management and Negotiation into the...
Executive Summary
This report was written for the University of the Sunshine Coast with a purpose to make
recommendations for incorporating conflict management and negotiation into the field of information
communication technology. The report clearly outlined two conflict management skills and one
negotiation skill and briefly described and outlined the benefits and challenges. Conflict management
is the process of limiting and controlling the negative conflict while increasing and controlling the
positive conflict. Negotiation is described to be a discussion aimed at reaching an agreement.
Positions versus interests are a mutually beneficial outcome where both parties underlying interests
are satisfied with the integrative technique. The technique is beneficial as a resolution is quick to
achieve. If both sides interest are the same object then it creates several challenges when incorporating
this technique into the business. One of the most basic strategies of human interaction is that of tit for
tat or equivalent retaliation. If you do that to me, then I will do that to you. A good deed can be
returned if you perform a good deed to other company. However, a limitation is that this technique
works best in a long term. Compromising is a widely used and an effective form of conflict
management. Compromising works best when there is an item that can be evenly divided between the
parties involved. Compromising involves splitting the desired item evenly between both sides. It

Karl Marx Commodity Fetishism
What s the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the word fetish ? When some people
hear the term fetish , it may triggers their dirty mind to immediately envisage an image of someone
wanting to be fed with a baby bottle while wearing a diaper. The term fetish ; however, simply mean
an idolization of things. It s when an object is believed to have supernatural powers, or in particular, a
man made object that has power over others. Essentially, fetishes can be applied in many contexts,
such as sexual, religion, and economic. Once such economic fetish, commodity fetishism, a term
coined by Karl Marx, a philosopher and a revolutionary socialist, in his 1867 economic work, Capital:
A Critique of Production of Capital (Mulhern 479). Marx argues that real social relations of
production are masked by the presence of commodities and that people treat commodities as if the
object themselves contained intrinsic value, rather than regarding value as the amount of real labor
expended to produce the object. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, let s look at commodity fetishism from the start. Today, we all live in a social system called
capitalism. Under capitalism once the object emerges as a commodity that has been assigned a
monetary value for equivalent universal exchanged, that inherent exchange value of a commodity was
only equal to the labor that produced it, yet we often treat and experience commodities as if they were
worth much, much more. This habit of imagining commodities as having human or

First time winner of the Product of the Year category, Ice Fili, is the top ice cream producer in Russia.
Recently, the company is experiencing tough competition by Nestlé and regional ice cream producers.
Ice Fili s current problem is its loss in market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, Ice Fili has three main weaknesses. First, their marketing is poor and competitors are
taking this opportunity to use their strong marketing experience. Second, 80% of Ice Fili s distribution
is through kiosks and mini markets. The issue is that the market is saturated with street kiosks and
mini markets carry limited range of food products. Third, customers have twice the likelihood of
finding a Nestlé product rather than an Ice Fili one which illustrates their low product availability.
Focusing on their core competency is the solution to gain market share.
Financial Analysis
With the use of financial ratios the following conclusions were deducted (see exhibit A for
calculations). Ice Fili is in good financial position since they are profitable given their positive
working capital and no long term debt. Their current ratio has increased over the past 4 years which is
a good indicator of liquidity but also illustrates an inefficient use in cash.
Their cash flow position is weak in 2001 since the cash conversion cycle is at its highest point
compared to previous years. Customers pay within 31 days whereas Ice Fili pays their suppliers in 21
days. Ice Fili is not using their customer s funds to pay suppliers, but rather their own funds. Also,
inventory is turning at a lesser rate than prior years which indicate that their inventory level may be
too high which ties up cash flow that could be used for investments or to pay suppliers.

Durga Puja Essay
Dusshera/Durga Puja Vijyadashmi or popularly known as Dusshera also called as Durga puja in other
eastern parts of the country is celebrated as one of the most popular festival, all across the country
with some minor traditional and cultural changes, as per the local myths and fables except for the one
real story, which most of us know but just to refresh what we read and were taught by our parents and
grandparents regarding the festival I should narrate it once again. The term implies Vijaya meaning
victory and Dashmi meaning tenth day of the Hindu calendar in the month of lunar calendar of
Ashwin corresponding to the month of September or October according to the English/Georgian

The City Of Wortropolis Faced An Economic Recession
The city of Wortropolis faced an economic recession between 1980 2000. Wortropolis was a city that
thrived from 1950 1980 with an economy based on large scale manufacturing. The unemployment rate
was 3% and the majority of residents owned their homes. In 1980 the city was hit with corporate
frauds and illegal investment practices which lead to the collapse of the banking sector. The banking
sector collapse lead to the economic recession. The recession caused problems of increased poverty,
social inequality, and crime. Between 1980 2000 the crime rates significantly rose. The violent crime
rate went from 5 per 100,000 to 50 per 100,000. The property crime rate went from 100 per 100,000 to
400 per 100,000. Despite the large increase in crime during the recession many of the white collar
offenders were never apprehended. The recession initially occurred due to the corporate fraud and
illegal investment practices but they were not apprehended like the people who committed blue collar
crimes. This failure to apprehend the people can be displayed through the labeling theory. The labeling
theory can explain the failure to apprehend the people who committed the white collar crimes that
caused the recession, and why the rate of white collar offences remained low through the sixty year
period through differential enforcement and labeling. The labeling theory can explain the failure to
apprehend the people who sparked the recession. The theory states that differential enforcement and

Perception Of The Human Condition In The Stranger By...
In his novel, The Stranger by Albert Camus, translated by Matthew Ward, irony within the protagonist
s ( Meursault ) contrasting perception of the human condition is used to illustrate and invoke the
reader to question the contradictory nature of societal expectations. His indifferent and unprecedented
reactions to experiences relative to the characters that Camus laid before him aid in displaying the
absurdity of a world constrained by the chains of conventional wisdom. The contrasting nature of
Meursault s demeanor in defying conventional wisdom in experiences such as love and death not only
reveals the underlying hypocrisy of the human condition but further illustrates the arbitrary essence of
defining a human life.
Irony in part one establishes Meursault s confliction with society as he is seemingly unaffected and
ultimately indifferent over an occurrence that universal sentiments would perceive as utterly
devastating. When Meursault is faced with the death of his mother in the genesis of the novel, he
remarks, Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know (Camus 1). The immense indifference
of Meursault s morality when it comes to the death of a human being, let alone his own mother, allows
readers to draw a contrasting line from the very first sentence of Meursault s moral behavior relative
to what society would deem as acceptable . Camus uses this expectation defying event to invoke the
reader s stance on the human condition s tendency to mourn

The name of the sample is orange burst , but I changed the name to superstitious shine , as Manderley

about it, due to the death of Max s first wife, Rebecca, hinted throughout the novel that she haunts the

The new Mrs. de Winter, consistently does not feel that she has complete ownership of Manderley,
almost as if she is a guest in her own home. After Maxim tells the unnamed narrator the truth behind
Rebecca s death, he describes how her [Rebecca s] shadow is between us all the time, and how she
will win in the end because she knew this would happen (265). It is suddenly clear the extent to which
Maxim has been tortured with guilt over murdering Rebecca. The narrator had incorrectly assumed
that Maxim s anguish was due to the loss of his wife, but Maxim is actually tormented by the
realization that Rebecca has manipulated him into killing her. Although Maxim has strived to move on
from the past, he has concluded that Rebecca will never let him escape. She will achieve a final
victory her body is discovered and Maxim is sent to prison as a murderer. The deep purple mimics
Rebecca s shadow as it is not easily seen in all environments (especially dark rooms); however, it is
always there and can never be erased because of its dark color. This color correlates with the
environment at Manderley as Manderley is the classic gothic castle with dark rooms and the narrator
senses Rebecca s presence throughout the home, especially in the west wing, where the room is very

Animal Welfare Act Research Paper
The first Animal Welfare Act was signed on August 24, 1966 by Lyndon B. Johnson. This is the only
law in the United States of America that oversees the treatment of animals in research. Although it is a
passed law, it does not stop all cruel treatment of animals. People all around the United States are still
disrespecting animals in ways they should not be. Recently, a video went viral of a man kicking a cat
in public. The 22 year old man, Andre Robinson, went to trial and pleaded not guilty. People like this

They deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. This is an important distinction
when talking about animal rights. People often ask if animals should have rights, and quite simply, the
answer is Yes! Animals surely deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. (Animal
Rights). Every year, ten billion animals are killed for their materialistic items, such as meat. Although
at least 16 million people in the United States are vegetarian or vegan, there is still a growing
population of people who kill animals for human consumption. Also, when most Americans look at a
pig or cow, they think of meat or leather. However, when we look at a dog or cat, we don t see the
animal of its parts. We think of it as a cute pet, not of its materialistic items. However, cows, pigs, and
chickens are all thought of and treated like inanimate production units (A Dog). I realized that in the
same way that racist and sexist views allowed us to discriminate against minorities and women,
speciesism allowed us to inscribe an inferior status on animals and to regard them not as individuals,
but as objects and means to fulfill our desires (Animal Liberation). At last, we need to think more of
how we would want to be treated if we were in their shoes. The basic principle of equality does not
require equal or identical treatment; it requires equal consideration (Animal Rights). The meaning of
this is that if we cannot provide

Based off of the selection of word choice you can understand that this story was taking place in the
south. The first way you can see that the story takes place in the south is by this quote You all ought to
take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad (O
Connor). The grandmother s use of the word ought should give you an idea that she is southern
because if this story took place up north she would have said something like you should . This quote
also shows you that this family is a part of southern culture because the grandmother says be broad .
This is implying that the family does not live in a large city and that they may live in a secluded area
where it is hard for them to be broad . Word choice is also exemplified in the quote Little niggers in
the country don t have things like we do . The family s choice of words when they are talking about
the African American race shows they are from the south based off of the stereotypes of the south
considering slavery was more present in the south than it was in the north. The way the word nigger is
used by the family also implies that the family in the short story is white. The analyzation of word
choice in this short story helps identify the cultural background of the family. The short story A Good

In the essay Unforgettable Miss Bessie, the author Carl. T. Rowan doesn t share the details about Miss
Bessie s background until the ninth paragraph of his writing. I believe he did this so that while he
described what she was like as an individual, you could paint your own picture of her before you
found out what made her that way. When taking into consideration her role in society as a teacher, it
was fascinating to hear that she attended a school that was originally for black people. During the time
period in which Miss Bessie was getting her education, many places didn t even have schools that
people with dark skin could attend. Another reason Rowan may have waited to explain Miss Bessie s
background early on, is because it helped the reader understand why she was so tough on Carl and his
education. Bessie knew many of the struggles African Americans could face if they didn t focus on
school and the right things, so she did everything in her power to put him on the right track. The first

The evolution of the strike causes an evolution in the self perceptions of the Africans themselves, one
that is most noticeable in the women of Bamako, Thies, and Dakar. These women go from seemingly
standing behind the men in their lives, to walking alongside them and eventually marching ahead of
them. When the men are able to work the jobs that the train factory provides them, the women are
responsible for running the markets, preparing the food, and rearing the children. But the onset of the
strike gives the role of bread winner or perhaps more precisely bread scavenger to the women. Women

The men who once acted as providers for their family, now rely on their wives to scrape together
enough food in order to feed the families. The new, more obvious reliance on women as providers
begins to embolden the women. Since the women now suffer along with their striking husbands, the
wives soon see themselves as active strikers as well. The strategy of the French managers, or toubabs
as the African workers call them, of using lack of food and water to pressure the strikers back to work,
instead crystallizes for workers and their families the gross inequities that exist between them and
their French employers. The growing hardships faced by the families only strengthens their resolve,
especially that of the women. In fact, some of the husbands that consider faltering are forced into
resoluteness by their wives. It is the women, not the men, who defend themselves with violence and

Essay about Euthanasia is Our Right to Die
Euthanasia is Our Right to Die
By ruling euthanasia illegal, America s justice system is violating one of our most natural rights, our
freedom of choice. In all respects, the right to die is as natural as the right to live. Webster s dictionary
defines euthanasia as an easy and painless death or an act or method of causing death painlessly.
Euthanasia, when administered correctly and under the right conditions can be a humane and moral
procedure. There are so many misconceptions and cliches surrounding euthanasia today that it has
become very difficult to make an informed decision about the subject. By examining concepts, cases,

There are four key arguments, which also translate into philosophical concerns, associated with
euthanasia. The first is a person s right to decide about his or her own life. People take for granted the
life affecting choices they make on a daily basis, what career path to follow, when to marry, and when
to have children just to name a few. The decision of when to die, without legal intervention, should
also be considered as one of these natural rights. The second philosophical concern is that denying
terminally ill patients the natural right to die is unfair and cruel. This point goes hand in hand with the
subject of ordinary versus extraordinary treatment. A terminally ill patient has and will continue to
have the right to prolong their life by means of ordinary treatment such as medicines and surgeries that
do not involve excessive pain, expense, etc. When it becomes impossible for a person to continue
living by means of ordinary treatment they are next given the choice to sustain their life by means of
extraordinary treatment or they are given the option of refusing treatment. Many people choose the
latter option on the basis of extraordinary treatment being associated with methods deemed unusual,
difficult, dangerous, and expensive. The reality of refusal of treatment is a grim one. What can be

The Pros And Cons Of Immigration And Naturalization
Immigration and naturalization seem to be a relentless ever present concern of the American
government. The immigration of different European, Jewish, Asian, and Hispanic groups during
different eras of American history have continuously raised interest in how the government should
balance America s reputation for being a welcoming place where anyone can succeed, without
sacrificing the economy. One group which was especially targeted and discriminated against by the
legal system throughout American history was Asian immigrants. This is evident in naturalization
laws, and the results of Supreme Court cases petitioned by predominantly Chinese as well as other
Asian groups such as Japanese and Hindus. Much of the discrimination against Asian immigrants
dreaming of becoming American citizens was founded in naturalization acts which dictated who was
and who was not allowed to become a citizen. The Naturalization Act of 1790, as well as the act that
replaced it in 1795, dictated that only a free white person may be granted citizenship (Naturalization
Act 1790/1795). Furthermore, the Naturalization Act of 1906, explicitly dictated that The
naturalization of Chinamen is prohibited (citation). Finally, the McCarran Walter Act, also known as
Nationality Act of 1952, which followed World War II sought directly to exclude the Japanese from
becoming American citizens, stating preference for Chinese and Korean immigrants (citation).
Given the ambiguity of these naturalization acts, there were several cases brought to court to clarify
citizenship laws. Specifically, there were many cases brought by people of Chinese descent. While the
outcomes of those cases were primarily against the foreign plaintiffs, there were still instances where
the plaintiffs won. This is best demonstrated by analyzing the two cases: United States v. Wong Kim
Ark and Chang Chan v. Nagle. Wong. Kim Ark was a child born in the United States of parents of
Chinese descent. Under the Naturalization Act of 1790 previously discussed, Wong s parents were not
eligible for U.S. citizenship. As a result, they moved back to China. After returning from a visit to his
parents in 1890, Wong: applied to the collector of customs to be permitted to land, and

2 Personal Goals
Introduction I will be exploring and distinguishing two personal goals and two professional goals in
relation to developing a strong and resilient mind. We will find methods that would help achieve these
goals. We will be creating scenarios that for each personal goal established and what method used to
achieve that goal.
First personal goal is to pay more attention and ask questions if I do not hear correctly. I may seem bit
off in my own world to say the least but it is nothing of the sort. I do listen; however, I do not always
hear them due to my bad hearing from military service. I do not like annoying people by asking them
to repeat themselves, so I try to simply wing it when possible.
Methods would be to practice mindfulness and accept ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I must be on my game in relation to the details of the project. There is one additional artist who fails to
meet the standards in place in relation to file formats and I get anxious for we are on a timeline.
Instead of being easily overwhelmed and anxious, I step back and reassess the situation. I breath,
smile, and simply correct the issue before the passing deadline comes. By doing this, I come across
grounded, professional, and dealt the situation in a positive manner.
Second professional goal would be more mindful and understanding to the client when trying the
understand there needs. Being a retired graphic shop team leader, I had to deal directly with clients
and try to understand their needs. At times this was no easy task, for a client may not always know
what he/she may want. This can be truly confusing and even annoying.
Methods would be to practice mindfulness, be positive, and gradually offer ideas to him/her to help
the process be easier for both parties (Mercola, 2013). It seems to be easier for the client to deal with a
more laid back, positive, and more mindful representative, for he/she may not know much of anything
with my trade. This would be more welcoming for the client room for ideas which both parties can
reach the intended

Poetic Analysis of Fern Hill Essay
Poetic Analysis Fern Hill
Dylan Thomas s poem Fern Hill represents the passage of one mans life from boyhood to adulthood
and the realization of his mortality. The speaker in this poem uses expressive language and imagery to
depict a tale of growing up. The use of colour adds life and character to people and abstract ideas. He
looks up to
Time (313) as an authority figure who has strict control of his life, and with descriptions of biblical
figures we can presume that he is a religious person who believes that God is in control of his destiny.
Each of these images contributes to a picture of one man s outlook on life and death.
Colour imagery is used in the beginning of the poem as the speaker describes his ... Show more

Wanderer meaning delirious or roaming, and white meaning innocent, paired together give the
impression that he was confused about growing up and maturing. Now, no longer a child, the speaker
looks back at his lamb white days (314). Used in biblical terms, the white lamb was an animal of
purity used for sacrifices to God. The speaker was merely an innocent white lamb (314) graciously
following his shepherd (God) to his own sacrifice (death).
The colour golden is spoken to in terms of time. He is comparing the value of time to the value of gold
when he says Golden...Time let me play (313), and Time...Golden in the mercy of his means (313). He
realizes the value of time now that he is older and no longer youthful. We can hear through his words
that he wishes he could have cherished time as a child as he now cherishes and values it. He last uses
the word golden in the past tense. The children are spoken of before...golden (313). As an adult he is
no linger as powerful as he was as a child. Golden (313) time has forever taken him far away from his
childless land (314).
Time is only seen as golden and valuable but is also looked upon as a concrete figure. The speaker
characterizes time as a father figure that allows (314) him to play and be young. He associates time
with an adult who is supervising him

The Fall of Rome and Nazi Germany
Societies flourish and fall, all of them do. They fight and suffer and even kill to keep their society
alive. As a result, societies like ancient Rome and Nazi Germany, eventually fall and crumble. Over
time some of these societies recover, but are never the same again. Societies fail due to political
corruption, loss of resources and war. These obstacles are hard to overcome, but not impossible. These
obstacles weaken and tear at societies, until they finally break, turning them into a piece of history.
Political Corruption and the fall of government are one of the main reasons why societies fail.
Lina and Doon have found many things in the City of Ember. One of them leading through the
pipeworks, to the Mayors Secret Hiding Place . They had discovered that the Mayor had been stealing
food from the citizens in Ember, when everyone else actually needed the supplies more than him.
Jeanne DuPrau writes, I m worried because the mayor of our city is taking for himself the things that
people need (DuPrau 176).
In the 1900 s during the time of the Great War Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany. He ruled
everything his citizens did including public communication, jobs, and especially the military. At this
time there was a large feud between races and the minorities were not treated equally. All of these
problems eventually led to the downfall of Nazi Germany. The leader gained support for his ideas
through informational text, which filled the popular media with

The 2008 Recession Affected The Global Economy
With the after effects of the stock marketing falling in 2008, and less investments involving risk and
the GDP falling. This is when the economy began turning internationally. With imports, exports and
foreign investment falling along with the combination of employment and production being cut back
this recession affected the global economy. The unemployment rate in the United States began to
skyrocket as well. Below is a graph depicting the unemployment rate in the United States during the
2008 recession. This graph data is from Oregon Economic Crisis Analysis.

household savings increased and spending decreased. Going into 2008, many households could afford
to keep debt and manage it because of the good financial indicators. Below is a graph from
Creditworthiness showing the U.S. average household debt vs saving leading into the 2008 financial
crisis. Most of the debt seen by households was in the form of mortgages, and loans against people s
mortgages. Again with the government regulations and push for more people to own houses, builders
to expand their developments and banks to offer subprime loans which lead to competition among
banks to lower interest rates, give out adjustable rate mortgages, and even give no income no asset
loans, it was easy to get the credit backing from banks and financial institutions for individuals. This
increased spending and debt can be contributed to why the economy was looking up for many years,
and the economy was booming. However when this uncertainty began to fall, more people pulled out
of their personal investments that they considered risk and starting hanging on to their money. Below
is a chart from the U.S. Bureau of Economics depicting the household savings before and after 2008.
It is important to look at personal savings to see how the money supply could have also affected the
economic crisis of 2008, which turned the economy into a recession. With lower money supply in the
economy and more in savings because of

  • 2. The Goal of the United States Criminal Justice System Within the United States Criminal Justice System, it is not only goal to simply punish those who break the law, but to also reduce the level of criminal activity. In order to fulfill this important aspect of the Criminal Justice System, offenders must be rehabilitated and motivated to refrain from engaging in further criminal activity so that they do not return to prison. Since the early 1990 s, our country s crime rate has been declining. Studies such as the Pew Safety Performance Project point out that this is an important goal for correctional systems to keep in mind, but it is not the only one. Establishing a high speed and reliable lighthouse area network will significantly boost the bed and breakfast s appeal for guests, and help bring the lighthouse into the digital era. Using a wireless mesh network will be more flexible and cheaper than an old fashioned wired local area network (LAN). That is beside the fact that wireless networks are easy to install, expand, and have the additional advantage of presenting a portable wireless link to the bed and breakfast residents. This internet networking project will be made up of two distinctive phases. In Phase I, a small scale network will be developed. The lessons learnt in Phase I will appraise the plan for Phase II, in which the network will be expanded to include the whole area that the lighthouse lays claim to. The final network will back wireless connectivity between guests and the bed and breakfast intranet services at data speeds approximating 54 Mbps. The services that will be delivered to include Web sites, email, and contact with the internet. The Great Awakening occured in the spring and summer of 1735 associated with a revivalist preacher and Congregationalist Protestant of the name Jonathan Edwards. Though their is great debate around the exact effect and correlation the so named Great Awakening had on the cause of the American Revolution, many did and still believe today that it was The Great Awakening that got people ready for the revolution and without it, the American Revolution would have never occured. By giving The Great Awakening and John Edwards preaching so much power it causes one religion, Protestanism, to become compatable as a part of the American identity. By associated Protestantism with an American identity it reveals the founders hypocrisy when they stated in the Bill of Rights that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof when it seems indeed a single religion is being promoted as the American religion. However, this could also simply be because of the confusion in definitions and what peoples views on church and state s relationship is and or should be on its promotion of a religion. This issue was brought up on page 89 of the reader, when in 1818 in Connecticut, Baptists argued that the state should support all churches equally while Thomas Jefferson argued that ... The War to Death decree creates a furor, and the combats and indecisive battles, won or lost, follow one upon the other with increasing rapidity. Despite important victories, Bolívar as well as General Santiago Mariño (who had previously liberated the eastern areas of the nation) find themselves obliged to give way in the face of a more numerous adversary led by the royalist José Tomás Boves. Boves emerges victorious from the La Puerta battle (June of 1814), and the patriots are forced to evacuate Caracas. A massive emigration towards the east takes place. There, Bolívar and Mariño see their authority challenged by their own companions at arms. The Liberator finds again fraternal asylum in Nueva Granada, where he intervenes with some measures of success in internal political struggles which enable the city of Bogotá to find a place in the newly established United Provinces. In deterrence, rather than attempting to lobby for new legislation, our goal will be to publicize the existing laws that prohibit drinking and driving; specifically, we aim to inform people about the large penalties associated with breaking these laws. That being said, we will not be relying on fear appeals to propel our message. Fear appeals, such as detailing the tragic deaths of innocent bystanders due to intoxicated drivers, can potentially increase undesirable behavior (Centers for Disease Control, 2016). In comparison, messages based on establishing or shaping social norms can have an extremely positive effect. As such, communications and outreach is truly the foundation of our proposed program. Our series of workshops aims to educate and inform drivers about the specific consequences and costs of drinking and driving. With wide enough implementation and reach, these workshops have the potential to help form societal norms that deter drunk driving through peer pressure. In a study, a paid media campaign was developed with the normative message, MOST Montana Young Adults (4 out of 5) Don t Drink and Drive. • 21. Incorporating Conflict Management and Negotiation into the... Executive Summary This report was written for the University of the Sunshine Coast with a purpose to make recommendations for incorporating conflict management and negotiation into the field of information communication technology. The report clearly outlined two conflict management skills and one negotiation skill and briefly described and outlined the benefits and challenges. Conflict management is the process of limiting and controlling the negative conflict while increasing and controlling the positive conflict. Negotiation is described to be a discussion aimed at reaching an agreement. Positions versus interests are a mutually beneficial outcome where both parties underlying interests are satisfied with the integrative technique. The technique is beneficial as a resolution is quick to achieve. If both sides interest are the same object then it creates several challenges when incorporating this technique into the business. One of the most basic strategies of human interaction is that of tit for tat or equivalent retaliation. If you do that to me, then I will do that to you. A good deed can be returned if you perform a good deed to other company. However, a limitation is that this technique works best in a long term. Compromising is a widely used and an effective form of conflict management. Compromising works best when there is an item that can be evenly divided between the parties involved. Compromising involves splitting the desired item evenly between both sides. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When some people hear the term fetish , it may triggers their dirty mind to immediately envisage an image of someone wanting to be fed with a baby bottle while wearing a diaper. The term fetish ; however, simply mean an idolization of things. It s when an object is believed to have supernatural powers, or in particular, a man made object that has power over others. Nevertheless, Ice Fili has three main weaknesses. First, their marketing is poor and competitors are taking this opportunity to use their strong marketing experience. Second, 80% of Ice Fili s distribution is through kiosks and mini markets. The issue is that the market is saturated with street kiosks and mini markets carry limited range of food products. Third, customers have twice the likelihood of finding a Nestlé product rather than an Ice Fili one which illustrates their low product availability. Focusing on their core competency is the solution to gain market share. Financial Analysis With the use of financial ratios the following conclusions were deducted (see exhibit A for calculations). Ice Fili is in good financial position since they are profitable given their positive working capital and no long term debt. Their current ratio has increased over the past 4 years which is a good indicator of liquidity but also illustrates an inefficient use in cash. Their cash flow position is weak in 2001 since the cash conversion cycle is at its highest point compared to previous years. Customers pay within 31 days whereas Ice Fili pays their suppliers in 21 days. Ice Fili is not using their customer s funds to pay suppliers, but rather their own funds. Also, inventory is turning at a lesser rate than prior years which indicate that their inventory level may be too high which ties up cash flow that could be used for investments or to pay suppliers. Wortropolis was a city that thrived from 1950 1980 with an economy based on large scale manufacturing. The unemployment rate was 3% and the majority of residents owned their homes. In 1980 the city was hit with corporate frauds and illegal investment practices which lead to the collapse of the banking sector. The banking sector collapse lead to the economic recession. The recession caused problems of increased poverty, social inequality, and crime. Between 1980 2000 the crime rates significantly rose. The violent crime rate went from 5 per 100,000 to 50 per 100,000. The property crime rate went from 100 per 100,000 to 400 per 100,000. Despite the large increase in crime during the recession many of the white collar offenders were never apprehended. The recession initially occurred due to the corporate fraud and illegal investment practices but they were not apprehended like the people who committed blue collar crimes. This failure to apprehend the people can be displayed through the labeling theory. The labeling theory can explain the failure to apprehend the people who committed the white collar crimes that caused the recession, and why the rate of white collar offences remained low through the sixty year period through differential enforcement and labeling. • 29. Perception Of The Human Condition In The Stranger By... In his novel, The Stranger by Albert Camus, translated by Matthew Ward, irony within the protagonist s ( Meursault ) contrasting perception of the human condition is used to illustrate and invoke the reader to question the contradictory nature of societal expectations. His indifferent and unprecedented reactions to experiences relative to the characters that Camus laid before him aid in displaying the absurdity of a world constrained by the chains of conventional wisdom. The contrasting nature of Meursault s demeanor in defying conventional wisdom in experiences such as love and death not only reveals the underlying hypocrisy of the human condition but further illustrates the arbitrary essence of defining a human life. Irony in part one establishes Meursault s confliction with society as he is seemingly unaffected and ultimately indifferent over an occurrence that universal sentiments would perceive as utterly devastating. When Meursault is faced with the death of his mother in the genesis of the novel, he remarks, Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know (Camus 1). The immense indifference of Meursault s morality when it comes to the death of a human being, let alone his own mother, allows readers to draw a contrasting line from the very first sentence of Meursault s moral behavior relative to what society would deem as acceptable . Camus uses this expectation defying event to invoke the reader s stance on the human condition s tendency to mourn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. This is an important distinction when talking about animal rights. People often ask if animals should have rights, and quite simply, the answer is Yes! Animals surely deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. (Animal Rights). Every year, ten billion animals are killed for their materialistic items, such as meat. Although at least 16 million people in the United States are vegetarian or vegan, there is still a growing population of people who kill animals for human consumption. Also, when most Americans look at a pig or cow, they think of meat or leather. However, when we look at a dog or cat, we don t see the animal of its parts. We think of it as a cute pet, not of its materialistic items. However, cows, pigs, and chickens are all thought of and treated like inanimate production units (A Dog). I realized that in the same way that racist and sexist views allowed us to discriminate against minorities and women, speciesism allowed us to inscribe an inferior status on animals and to regard them not as individuals, but as objects and means to fulfill our desires (Animal Liberation). At last, we need to think more of how we would want to be treated if we were in their shoes. The basic principle of equality does not require equal or identical treatment; it requires equal consideration (Animal Rights). The meaning of this is that if we cannot provide ... The grandmother s use of the word ought should give you an idea that she is southern because if this story took place up north she would have said something like you should . When the men are able to work the jobs that the train factory provides them, the women are responsible for running the markets, preparing the food, and rearing the children. The strategy of the French managers, or toubabs as the African workers call them, of using lack of food and water to pressure the strikers back to work, instead crystallizes for workers and their families the gross inequities that exist between them and their French employers. There are four key arguments, which also translate into philosophical concerns, associated with euthanasia. The first is a person s right to decide about his or her own life. People take for granted the life affecting choices they make on a daily basis, what career path to follow, when to marry, and when to have children just to name a few. The decision of when to die, without legal intervention, should also be considered as one of these natural rights. The second philosophical concern is that denying terminally ill patients the natural right to die is unfair and cruel. This point goes hand in hand with the subject of ordinary versus extraordinary treatment. A terminally ill patient has and will continue to have the right to prolong their life by means of ordinary treatment such as medicines and surgeries that do not involve excessive pain, expense, etc. When it becomes impossible for a person to continue living by means of ordinary treatment they are next given the choice to sustain their life by means of extraordinary treatment or they are given the option of refusing treatment. • 40. The Pros And Cons Of Immigration And Naturalization Immigration and naturalization seem to be a relentless ever present concern of the American government. The immigration of different European, Jewish, Asian, and Hispanic groups during different eras of American history have continuously raised interest in how the government should balance America s reputation for being a welcoming place where anyone can succeed, without sacrificing the economy. One group which was especially targeted and discriminated against by the legal system throughout American history was Asian immigrants. This is evident in naturalization laws, and the results of Supreme Court cases petitioned by predominantly Chinese as well as other Asian groups such as Japanese and Hindus. Much of the discrimination against Asian immigrants dreaming of becoming American citizens was founded in naturalization acts which dictated who was and who was not allowed to become a citizen. The Naturalization Act of 1790, as well as the act that replaced it in 1795, dictated that only a free white person may be granted citizenship (Naturalization Act 1790/1795). Furthermore, the Naturalization Act of 1906, explicitly dictated that The naturalization of Chinamen is prohibited (citation). Finally, the McCarran Walter Act, also known as Nationality Act of 1952, which followed World War II sought directly to exclude the Japanese from becoming American citizens, stating preference for Chinese and Korean immigrants (citation). Given the ambiguity of these naturalization acts, there were several cases brought to court to clarify citizenship laws. Specifically, there were many cases brought by people of Chinese descent. While the outcomes of those cases were primarily against the foreign plaintiffs, there were still instances where the plaintiffs won. This is best demonstrated by analyzing the two cases: United States v. Wong Kim Ark and Chang Chan v. Nagle. Wong. Kim Ark was a child born in the United States of parents of Chinese descent. Under the Naturalization Act of 1790 previously discussed, Wong s parents were not eligible for U.S. citizenship. As a result, they moved back to China. Poetic Analysis of Fern Hill Essay Poetic Analysis Fern Hill Dylan Thomas s poem Fern Hill represents the passage of one mans life from boyhood to adulthood and the realization of his mortality. The speaker in this poem uses expressive language and imagery to depict a tale of growing up. The use of colour adds life and character to people and abstract ideas. He looks up to Time (313) as an authority figure who has strict control of his life, and with descriptions of biblical figures we can presume that he is a religious person who believes that God is in control of his destiny. Each of these images contributes to a picture of one man s outlook on life and death. Colour imagery is used in the beginning of the poem as the speaker describes his ... Now, no longer a child, the speaker looks back at his lamb white days (314). Used in biblical terms, the white lamb was an animal of purity used for sacrifices to God. As a result, societies like ancient Rome and Nazi Germany, eventually fall and crumble. Over time some of these societies recover, but are never the same again. Societies fail due to political corruption, loss of resources and war. These obstacles are hard to overcome, but not impossible. One of them leading through the pipeworks, to the Mayors Secret Hiding Place . They had discovered that the Mayor had been stealing food from the citizens in Ember, when everyone else actually needed the supplies more than him. Going into 2008, many households could afford to keep debt and manage it because of the good financial indicators. Below is a graph from Creditworthiness showing the U.S. average household debt vs saving leading into the 2008 financial crisis. Most of the debt seen by households was in the form of mortgages, and loans against people s mortgages.
