The Search for America in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend...
The Search for America in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In the early to mid 1800 s, Washington Irving was an immensely popular writer heralded as one of
the great American writers. Irving s importance lies especially in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow, the sketches in which he creates the vision of the alternate America(n). His
critique of American society through his main characters Rip and Ichabod and the towns in which
they live gives shape to an America not usually acknowledged by his contemporaries, and thus
crucial to American literary studies today. J. Hector St. JohnDe Crevecoeur, who created the most
definitive statement of American circa Irving s time, certainly would not. ... Show more content on

In this light Crevecoeur, rather than belittling America, gives America a special importance.
Although Americans have European influences at their core, they will do more than simply act on
those European traits in a new setting. Rather, they will bring different traits from every aspect of
Europe to create [. . .] the most perfect society now existing in the world (642). While it could be
argued that Irving does just that in creating his stories, the stories themselves are a far cry from
calling America the most perfect society on earth..
By Crevecoeur s definition, the creation of Irving s work was very American. He wrote roughly
forty five short stories, and No less than a third are traceable [. . .] to German sources
(Pochmann, 1186 7). Among this third are Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,
which both draw heavily from German sources especially Musaeus Volksmarchen (Hoffman, 347
8). What Irving did, though, was to take the myths of Europe and create uniquely American
stories. But while the creation of the stories seems to fit Crevecoeur s mold of what American is,
the message in Irving s sketches far from endorses this notion of America as the perfect society
assimilating all of the good of Europe. For this to occur, America would have to assimilate
European ideas and ideas. Irving seems to take exception to this.

Music Festivals And The Environment
Music Festivals and the
Environment
Music festivals throughout the years have become one the fastest growing phenomenons known to
the young and old. All over the world millions of people gather in one place to enjoy various
artists, foods and good company. What most of the world does not realize is the environmental
shock these extremely popular festivals are putting on our planet. The most notable ideas
concerning waste, traffic and travel, and the status and outcomes of environmental ideas and
impacts on our planet in the music festival culture come from agreenerfestival.com, and Judith Mair
and Jennifer Laing. Countless hours spending your whole day in one place, forgetting water bottles
and obviously getting hungry, as humans these acts are just part of our nature. Many thousands of
people to feed and hydrate there is no doubt about it the waste construction would be a considerable
issue at music festivals. Trash is known to be the most catastrophic problem regarding the
environment at these festivals. The main problem is too much trash and not enough places to store
it or simply just the laziness of festival goers not respecting their surroundings, 81% of people
strongly agreed or agreed that they would most likely separate their trash is separate bins
(agreenerfestival.com). , furthermore the initial problem is that even though there is waste bins not
enough people are disposing of their trash. Many festivals now days are realizing that waste

How Were Stalin And Lenin Similar
Stalin s and Lenin s policies were very similar but Stalin changed Lenin s policy and Stalin s
policy was far more harsh. Lenin and Stalin s social policies were to get rid of religion. Lenin and
Stalin were also comparable in their economic policies, which were to have the government control
the economy. Stalin s economic policies broke with Lenin s to create, what were in effect, two new
Soviet revolutions in industry and in agriculture. Lenin and Stalin both wanted to achieve socialism
in Russia, however their plans to achieve this were different with Stalin s way being more harsh.
Lenin believed that socialism could not be achieved without revolutions in other advanced western
countries. Stalin trusted that socialism could be accomplished

The Effects Of US Sanctions On Iran
U.S Sanctions on Iran

Introduction
Currently, numerous sanctions target the Iranian economy. These sanctions are implemented and
enforced by the United States of America, The European Union, and several other United Nation
members to include; Japan, the Republic of Korea, Canada, Australia, Norway, Switzer. Fathollah
nejad, A. (2013). These measures are necessary to enforce international laws through means other
than war.
These sanctions range from financial institutions, oil refinery and production, third party investors,

The hostage situation received more coverage in the media and politics than any event since
World War II. They were finally released in 1981. In 1985, the U.S provided weapons to Iranto

the USS Vincennes shots down an Iranian passenger plane, killing 290 civilians en route to
Mecca. The plane was mistaken for a fighter jet. 1997 brought the election of Iranian President

Analysis Of The Book The Ugly American
The book The Ugly American clearly demonstrates several of the established Special Operations
Force (SOF) imperatives outlined in ADRP 6 22. As a Special Forces soldier I can relate these
imperatives to stories illustrated in the book and apply them to real life situations that I have
experienced in the field. The Ugly American is a goldmine of wisdom and a handbook for special
warfare. All Special Operations soldiers should read it. The first SOF imperative is to Understand
the Operational Environment. The character of Ambassador MacWhite clearly illustrates this
imperative during his preparation for his new assignment as Ambassador to Sarkhan. He learns the
language, researches their history and political life, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would have been my sixth trip to the Philippines. However, this trip was different. Our
detachment never had a trained Intelligence Sergeant, so our senior Communications Sergeant
took it upon himself to prepare a cultural study and information brief for the detachment. I was
so impressed; he broke down the demographics, the religious conflicts, and addressed political
and economic considerations. I learned more in that brief than I had from the five previous
exercises in the Philippines. At that time, I was no different from Ambassador Sears. I displayed
arrogance over our counterparts. I viewed them as less than us, uninterested in training, and lazy.
Looking back, why would they be interested in anything we had to offer? We neglected to
develop personal relationships with them, dictated their training according to our needs, and
bossed them around on the range like subordinates. Like Sears, I did not try to learn the language.
It was not my target language, so I did not consider it a priority, even though I had predictable
reoccurring engagements there. I went to western style parties and ate at western style restaurants.
Ultimately, I trained hard and had a tight shot group, but never realized I was aiming at the wrong
target. About a year latter, I reached my Date Of Return from Over Seas (DEROS) and left the

Theme Of Confusion In Atonement
Confusion is an archetypal storytelling motif, seen in such classics as Julius Caesar by William
Shakespeare as well as modern television. This motif, whether it s referenced as the fog of war,
confusion, or simply misconceptions, has progressed intriguing plots for centuries. Often, confusion
follows one seeking to find transparent, black and white truths where they don t exist. In modern
literature, a prime model of the effects of confusion can be seen in Ian McEwans Atonement.
Atonement, being a novel founded upon a principle of varied versions of reality created through
misunderstandings triggered by adolescence and a lust for control, shows how the act of seeking
clear black and white answers in a gray world often leads to a loss of control... Show more content

Briony, in her final note in the book, begins speaking of how she identifies the fact that she
creates her own realities through her writing and, reasonably, lives them out. She states, how
can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is
also God? (McEwan 350). Briony s experienced state shows how she has identified how her
youthful state and her role as a novelist have created her own versions of reality and that she
cannot achieve atonement because it is something only she can give to herself. In other words,
Briony has come to the conclusion that she cannot be forgiven for actions, that she had lost
control of her life when she tried to take control of it at a young age, and how her youthful
imagination had upset the worldly balance when it began tampering with the real world. Briony
has clearly come to grips with the idea that the world is not black and white; rather, it is a very
indiscernible creation that can easily be corrupted by those who attempt to control

Seinfeld s Impact on American Culture Essay
Seinfeld s Impact on American Culture
Jerry Seinfeld s television sitcom, Seinfeld, which went off the air in 1999, is still one of the most
culturally pertinent shows today. The show dealt with little nuances of American society. A puffy
shirt, for example, could be the main subject for an entire show. This show, which was derived
from Jerry Seinfeld s observational humor, was voted as the Greatest Show of All Time by TV
Guide in 2002. According to the show s official website, the ratings for the syndicated version of
Seinfeld are ahead of many of the current primetime comedies ( Seinfeld 2/5).

TV, and the social... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of his obsessive nature his mother said: He never wanted just a piece of chocolate cake, it was the
whole cake. And he always waited until he got what he wanted ( Jerry Seinfeld 1/7).
Soon Seinfeld s easy to relate to humor gave way to regular appearances on The Tonight Show and
Late Night with David Letterman. Other more gimmicky comedians failed the test of time, but
Seinfeld s steadfast style made his popularity bloom. Despite national exposure, Seinfeld still
stayed close to his roots, continuing to play at small venues as well as on television. With jokes
like: They say Tide cleans bloodstains. I say if you ve got a T shirt with bloodstains, then maybe
laundry isn t your biggest problem ( Jerry Seinfeld 3/7) it s not hard to see why Seinfeld caught on.
In 1990, Seinfeld, a sitcom based on Seinfeld s humor, debuted as a summer replacement show.
Seinfeld allowed characters on the show to embody some of the idiosyncrasies his stand up comedy
had observed. Seinfeld played himself on the show, and the other characters on the sitcom were
based on friends and acquaintances in Seinfeld s real life. The show was set in a recognizable
Manhattan with specific storefronts and locales in the cut scenes and dialogue. The plot of an
episode of Seinfeld usually centered on the daily menial tasks of the characters and the little quirks
that they observed along the way. Seinfeld, widely

How Trade Agreements And Sugar Exports Affect The U.s....
1.1 Problem Statement
The goal of this paper is to describe and analyze how trade agreements and sugar imports affect the
U.S. sugar market and program.
1.2 Background With the U.S. generating domestic sugar from both the sugarcane and sugar beet
industries, the U.S. is among the world s largest sugar producers and generated over $4 billion in
cash receipts in 2015 2016 (U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service
(ERS), 2017A). Sugar beets account for 55 percent of production, sugarcane produces 45 percent
of the total domestic sugar production (USDA ERS, 2017A). A rotational crop, sugar beets can
withstand a variety of climates. Poised to continue as the largest domestic sugar source, beet sugar
harvesting and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Section 3 describes the method and data used to determine impact of trade agreement on the U.S.
sugar program. Lastly, section 4 will discuss the conclusions and offers recommendations for future
study.
2. Conceptual Framework As aforementioned, the U.S. sugar production is large, and in spite this,
sugar imported under trade agreements affect the domestic market. Consequently, to understand the
U.S. sugar market, a dive into U.S. production supply and trade agreement obligations is required to
understand how these elements support the U.S. sugar program. Corresponding to domestic
demand, the U.S. sugar market constraints the amount of domestic cane sugar and beet sugar
produced to not exceed 85% of the estimated U.S. demand (McMinimy, 2016). In addition to four
smaller trade agreements with nine countries, a larger part of the unfilled U.S. consumption
demand comes from importation under WTO and NAFTA allocations (McMinimy, 2016; USDA
FAS, 2017). Based on patterns from the unrestricted free trade period of 1975 1981, the U.S. Trade
Representative allocates a WTO tariff rate quota (TRQ) allocation with 40 countries and the
USDA executes the sugar program each FY, beginning October 1 each year (USDA ERS, 2017B).
The TRQ system applies to imports of raw cane sugar, refined sugar, sugar syrups, specialty sugars

The American Company Called Amazon
1) Introduction In order to carry out this research, I have chosen the American company called
Amazon. It is a well known, web based international retailer which is based in Seattle,
Washington. 2) Product Description Amazon started out as a simple web auctions based service
in kind to eBay, but failed to cut into the market share. The company then became a marketplace
for fixed price goods much like an online retail website with a small collection of goods for sale.
Over time it started to develop its product line and range by supplying DVDs, CDs, software,
apparel, beauty products, groceries, health care products, kitchen supplies, jewelry, musical
instruments and other items (Mudambi and Schuff, 2010). The website was able to provide an
online platform to these products. As the company matured, it expanded its retail services and
then also developed delivery services of its products to people s doorsteps at the prescribed time.
Demand and Future Outlook The basic nature of the demand curve will always be negatively
sloped as people would be willing to demand less at higher prices and higher at lower prices. The
factors which can affect the demand curve and cause it to shift for Amazon will include number
of buyers. As buyers in the market increase, the curve will shift outwards as more people will be
willing to buy at the same price. As the income of the people also rises, they would be able to
afford more products from Amazon so they will buy them shifting the demand

Similarities Between Prairie Dogs And Jaguars
In this essay, I will go into detail about two examples of keystone species. First, I will talk about
prairie dogs and then I will talk about jaguars. Both species contribute and add to the life in their
environments both directly and indirectly. Next, I will discuss the consequences if the prairie
dogs and the jaguars left their habitats. Lastly, I will talk about similarities and differences
between the two species. Prairie Dogs live in the western Great Plains region of the United States.
Specifically, they live in grasslands. They live in tunnels with rooms that they use as shelter. Prairie
Dogs aerate and fertilize soil, which in turn gives life to plantspecies native to the Plains. They
also help provide life for animals native to the plains such as wolves, bison, bees, and birds.
Prairie Dogs are considered a keystone species because they provide life to plants and animals,
which would find great difficulty surviving without them. The prairie dogs have a relationship with
bison. The prairie dogs add to the forage quality of the food in the... Show more content on

Jaguars are the apex predator of their ecosystems and are strictly carnivores. They eat capybaras,
armadillos, monkeys, birds, and different types of fish as well. Jaguars are a K selected species
because the mothers of jaguars tend to have few cubs and care for those small amount of cubs
deeply. Jaguars are considered to be a keystone species because they control the populations of
animals who would decimate plant life in the Central and South American regions. Jaguar
populations are currently in decline. Deforestation and poaching tend to be the leading factors of
why jaguars are dying off at such a significant rate. Many conservation groups have come out and
said publicly that if the international community does not do something about the decline in the
jaguar population, the tropical rainforests of Central and South America will be under threat

Angell s Belief in Functionalism and John Watson s Belief...
It was also suggested by Angell(1913) that consciousness was best if forgotten and there should be
a objective method of describing animal and human behavior but also believed that if it were to
exist , it should definitely be of some use for an organism .
The statement also suggests that it was not only John Watson the founder of behaviorism who
proposed the idea rather it was thought about before him. His rise and influence was probably
because of introducing the idea at a time when it could be accepted by the time and tide of that
period.
Psychology had been the study of mind from a very long time and was represented by the method of
introspection defined as studying the mind by analyzing the thoughts.
Angell s functionalism aimed to apply psychology and its methods to real life problems however
the problem with both structuralism and functionalism was that the methods were not reliable and
introspection was considered to be a problem rather than a solution.
Psychology could not convince people of its usefulness and practical problem and the founder of
behaviorism John Watson believed that both structuralism and functionalism were subjective and
introduced behaviorism as objective. (Moore ,2011) which was considered to be a transformation
from one phase of science to another . (Gardner ,1985)
Behaviorism has been believed to influence everyday life from parenting and learning to employee
perks in organizations. It aims to study behavior and how it can be changed, it

National Curriculum Of Physical Education
Smith (1991) explains that the way in which the pupils understand the value and purpose of PE
may influence the way in which the lesson is delivered and what pupils achieve. Papaioannou and
Macdonald (1993) go on to say that pupil personal progress and success is achieved when the
pupils see the lesson objectives and learningoutcomes as purposeful.
Pupils who don t understand the benefits of PE and therefore don t value it are likely to not
participate in lessons and drop out of sport and become inactivate once they have left school, if not

activities on offer are irrelevant to them.
Woodhouse (1996): Green (1998); Penney (1999) imply that, the National Curriculum of Physical
Education, objectives and general requirements are not fully appreciated and understood by pupils
whom it is designed for.
Harris (1994); Macdonald et al (2005) studies have shown that young people value PE for the
cathartic function it can provide and because it was seen as enjoyable subject where the pupils can
have fun and be with friends (Harris, 1994:145) while playing team games (Macdonald et al., 2005).
Flintoff Scraton (2001:10) explain from their study that pupils see the key purpose of PE as a

Automobiles and Pollution Essay
Automobiles and Pollution
In years past, levels of air, noise, and sight pollution were much lower than they are today. There
are more cars on the road today, and because of this we experience higher levels of pollution than
before. The automobile is probably the leading contributor pollution in our cities. They release toxic
emissions into our atmosphere. Automobiles are linked particularly to carbon monoxide pollution.
They are noisy (especially if you are living near the highway), and they take up valuable space in
the form of vast parking lots that are unpleasing to the eye. Why are there more automobiles on the
road today than there was in the past? Understanding the answer to this question is important when
trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Americans are known for our passion for the automobile. The automobile symbolizes freedom
and independence. Freedom is the backbone of our country. Many of our historical documents
were written with freedom as the major theme. For example, the declaration of independence
proposes freedom from an oppressive government. Freedom is a concept that most Americans
take pride in. For this reason, the automobile is attractive to us. If you own your own
automobile, you are free to go any place you like whenever you want. You suddenly become
independent and you no longer have to rely on other people for rides. This is a common feeling
among 16 year olds. With the acquisition of the drivers license comes a whole new world of
opportunity and responsibility.
Another factor to be considered is the American concept of time. Time is money. Because of this
we are usually in a hurry, so we hop in our cars and off we go, late for some sort of an
appointment. We could use alternate forms of transportation like busses or railways which decrease
pollution by decreasing the total number of cars on our roads, but these forms of transportation are
not as convenient as driving ourselves. After all, time is money and I m late for a class. I don t
have time to wait for the bus. Is this

Conceptual Analysis Of Public Disclosure Working
5.Conceptual analysis of public disclosure working in Pakistan
5.1Information Quality
The problem that exists in Pakistan under the current system is the lack of environmental
information that could create a drive towards improvement. There exists the classic principal agent
problem with regulators needing good data about firm s pollution levels, but the firms do not have a
medium or drive of providing such information. This information asymmetry is addressed through
introducing instruments such as the TRI or PROPER, which provides a platform for information
collection and usage. It will indeed incentivise firms an incentive to improve their public image in
the cheapest way available to them (Grafton et al, 2004).

As Hibbard et al (2003) mentions that for a reputational damage model to work, data must be
widely disseminated and easily understandable with rankings provided for evaluation of
performance. Although US did not face the same challenge, Indonesia, being a low income country
had challenges to cater the data interpretation problem. PROPER has wisely combined multiple set
of environmental indicators into a color coded scheme through technical support from international
agencies such as the World Bank, to increase public understanding (Kanungo and Torres, n.d.;
Ardiansyah, 2014). This transformation of public environmental communication in Indonesia has
proven to be a breakthrough in its environmental policy and holds a promising example for Pakistan
to apply. Raising awareness through campaigns and disseminating the information to the public
using the broad print and electronic media network will grant easy access and develop public
interest to use such information.
Generally, it becomes difficult to identify the source of pollution among various firms gathered in
an industrial area. To quantitatively record such data is challenging, especially for developing
economies. The emission data for TRI is self reported and little is done to check its accuracy. The
US easily compiled, processed and transmitted the information under the given institutional
structure and

Anderson s writing style is clearly shown in this excerpt from early in the novel. Anderson s use
of the closet symbolizes many things. The closet is a secret place, reflecting the secret of the
rape. It symbolizes Melinda s need to hide from the world so she doesn t have to speak to
anyone. It also represents isolation. Anderson uses hyperbole ( a beast in my gut ) to signify how
terrible Melinda always feels on the inside. She also uses personification (memory.. stains me ) to
indicate that the memory will forever be etched in her. Finally, the tone of this excerpt is the tone
of the major portion of this novel. Melinda is constantly depressed, never speaks, and has a

Marco Polo s Paradise In Heaven, Suzhou On Earth
When the Venetian merchant Marco Polo traveled to the orient, he saw many wondrous things.
Two cities that inspired him a lot were Suzhou and Beijing. In Suzhou he saw people who could
conquer the world and in Beijing he saw a city that had a standing truly unparalleled among the
cities of the World. These descriptions showed the immense greatness that both cities bestowed on
guests from abroad and it is something that hasn t changed over the years.
Over the years the Chinese gave Suzhou s grandeur this description: Paradise in Heaven, Suzhou
and Hangzhou on Earth. For Suzhou the splendor started in the year 514 BC when King Helu of
the Wu state decided to build a capital city near Lake Taihu. He tasked the project to his minister,
Wu Zixu, who designed the city to ensure environmental harmony. The effects of this can still be
seen today as modern day Suzhou is equal parts water and land.
Over the years this city has grown to become one of the most storied cities in all of China. Firstly,
Suzhou and its inhabitants have had a great impact of war. As the capital of the Wu state numerous
assaults were taken to cement the power of the state. Originally the name of the city was Wu to
honor the ruling power. This strong power was shown when King Helu managed to defeat the

Golden Gate Bridge Monuments
Have you ever been to Mt. Rushmore? Or the Gateway Arch? What about the Golden Gate
Bridge? There s one thing these all have in common: they re all monuments that had a lot of
planning go into them. Monuments are built in order for people to remember and honor the past.
Whether it be people or events, there are many factors a group must consider when creating a
monument. Monuments are a physical form of a history book; they help re create and remember
past events and people. When memorializing an event of person, a group of people should consider
cost, design, and text factors when creating a monument.
The cost to build a monument is a huge factor in creating a memorial. The group would have to
create a monument that fits their budget, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Words can be tricky when they are being placed on a monument. One has to make sure the
quotes are correct. One has to make sure the quotes are perceived how they should be. One has
to make sure names and other words are correctly spelled. Is the monument even going to have
any words on it? All of these contribute to what one must consider when adding words to a
monument. Any sort of word would bring back memories of the event. As stated by Lin, words
can be used to capture a specific moment in time or a single event or a generalized image to
resurrect memories of those lost in a tragic event. This is the goal of any monument at it s purest;
to remember an event as it happened. Words can also depict important saying of the past, as it does
the Gettysburg Address on the Lincoln Memorial (Savage). This is cause for importance because it
prevents those words from being lost or twisted in the pages of history books. Words are of vast
importance when building a monument, as they protect the quotes and people of the past from
being nothing.
Cost, design, and words are only a few factors that should be considered when building a
monument. As proved by prior facts, these by far are the most important as they dictate what people
see and read. Without monuments, the public would have difficulties remembering and honoring
past events and people. Not only that, but it ensures people remember and

The Three Creation Myths
Question One
The signs of miracles and or Magic discussed in the creation myths
Each of the creation myths reveals some form of supernatural power beyond human understanding.
One common magic that is common is creation from nothing . It is believed that a supreme deity
who existed from the beginning of time solely participated in creation. With the emptiness that
existed, the Supreme Being creates through uttering words or body secretions
(Pinsent, 18). He then organizes the world into the form that it exists presently. It is also a common
belief that the supreme deity has power to give life to human through his breath. As much as he
could engage in physical creation, he also shared the life in them to humans. Certain creatures are

Sumerian myth describes how the gods created black headed people and provided conducive

the condemnation of evil and pursuit for peace. It also reveals the value for humans by ensuring
that they get what they need for survival. Good conduct is also emphasized to ensure that peace and
order is maintained. Negritos myth brings out the ideas that creation took place through thoughts or
dreaming. It is believed that a divine couple, Pedn and Manoid existed in the sun that later created
the Earth. First, nature is valued as the source of the universe and all life forms. Relations are valued
as it is the source of human life (Powell, 34).
Question Three
Nature of cultures
The Sumerian culture portrays the importance of animals as compared to human beings.
This was evident when the gods failed to inform people of the impending floods (Pinsent, 21).

Confucianism And The Conflicts Of The Han Dynasty Of...
The Han Dynasty of Ancient China was one of the most prominent and long lasting societies of the
time. However, they were not untouched by the ravages of the world, and despite their Confucius
roots, there was a war to be fought. The Salt and Iron debate is an example of how the
Confucianism of the time affected the strategy of the war. Should the government stick to their
principles, or protect their empire? When is the time to say enough is enough ?
In order to understand the debate, we must understand those who are arguing. The Scholars spent
years studying the word and policy of Confucius, then toured China spreading his ideas to every
household. The Confucius Scholars opposed the Salt and Iron policies of the Chinese government.

They asked why their people should have to suffer if it wasn t necessary. The bureaucrats were
also beginning to consider the possibility of fighting back, and to do so they would need soldier
and costly weaponry. Fighting back was becoming more attractive because of the severe cost of
bribing the Xiongnu, who were taking goods like gold, silk, and Princesses. There was a major
loss happening, and the only way to keep the country floating was through the monopolies. The
bureaucrats try explaining this to the Scholars, but are vehemently argued against because the trade
is steeped in greed.
In my opinion, the bureaucrats make a stronger case for the continuation of the Salt and Iron
monopolies. There must be an army, and walls to protect the country. If they aren t going to
fight, like the Scholars want, then there also needs to be money for bribes. If there is no money,
there is no way to protect the people of China. It is a situation where you have decided if your
morals come before the safety of those you care about. How far are you willing to go to protect
your people? The Scholars aren t willing to go all the way, and people will die because of it. Not
everyone has the same beliefs, so displaying them will not save you. The Scholars did not consider
the real harm that comes to the citizens when they cannot express themselves fully, not to mention

The Characteristics Of A Twisted Hero
A hero is a person who rises above the ranks of the average individual and is known as one who
achieves great strides as well as lead people to prosperity and greatness. On the contrary, a person
who is twisted is one whom has an abnormal and, in a myriad number of occasions, warped
perspective on reality and morality. When combining these two concepts, what comes out is a
Twisted Hero, a person who brings about times of prosperity and greatness, but does so in a
manner akin to that of if one were to jump into a black hole in space, one will be torn in two with
one half being incinerated immediately and the other half being completely fine falling into the
black hole. This is what a twisted hero is defined as to me, a twisted hero leaves only the
outstanding results, but takes out any chance of it being done righteously. These twisted heroes can
be found in the cases of Om a Sokdae and the fifth grade class, William Tecumseh Shermanwith his
total wartactics, and my teacher in fourth grade with her cruel punishments. When examining why
Om Sokdae, the class monitor, is the twisted hero of the fifth grade class, it is important to realize
the achievements the class, as a whole, is able to reach when they listen to him. From their class
being seen as the most ideal by the school, having the best grades and test scores, and the students
being seen as the most exemplary it is clear that Om has made great strides with his leadership
position as class monitor.

Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Line Pablo Neruda, one of the most popular and prolific poets
during the twentieth century was born in July 12, 1904, Parral, Chile and died in September 23,
1973. Tonight I can write is a poem that he wrote at the age of twenty expressing his feeling about
a lost love and writing his saddest lines for it. The main theme, is the opening created by lost love
in a horrible universe. The two thoughts of love and life are tangled together in Neruda s poem.
The verse falls into his spirit due to the immense night, more immense without her. The night wind
spins and sings and the stars shudder, so that on this night he can compose the saddest lines.
Because he is feeling that he lost her so tonight he will write his saddest lines.

The line Tonight I can write the saddest lines is repeated in line 1, in the first line of the fourth

Neruda creates rhythm that returns the reader back to that phrase. Also, the reader is able to fully

The recipe might look difficult at first glacnce, but it is faily easy to make. It is just a matter of
assembeling all the components once they are baked and made.
You start off by making the choux pastry; mixing milk, water, salt, and butter. Then you add flour
and stir until it all comes together. Transfer to bowl and stir in eggs until completely they are
completely absorbed by the dough. Pipe the mixture onto a pan making small mounds that will bake
and become the cream puffs that will go on top of the base. Next make the cake base and cut into
a 24 cm circle, making sure to poke holes into the dough. Next outline the circle with choux
pastry and then make a smaller circle in the center. Once it has baked you make the pastry cream
that will go in the center. Prepare the crГЁme Chiboust then in a bowl whisk egg yolks, sugar,
and corn starch. When milk in the crГЁme is boiling pour it into the egg mixture in three
increments and boil. Allow the pastry cream to boil and then store in fridge. For the meringue start
the sugar syrup by placing sugar and water in saucepan on medium heat. At this time start
whipping eggs. When egg whites have soft peaks add the syrup slowly, continue whipping for a
minute or so and then add into pastry cream. Then all that is left is to assemble the different parts.
Fill the crГЁme puffs with the pastry cream. Then dip them in the caramel glaze and let them rest.
Then place them

Mental Illness In Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway
Throughout her life, novelist Virginia Woolf suffered with mental illness, and she ultimately
ended her life at age 59. As art often imitates life, it is not surprising that characters in Woolf s
works also struggle with mental illness. One of her novels, Mrs. Dalloway, recounts a day in the
life of Clarissa Dalloway, a high society woman living in London, and those who run in her circle.
As the novel progresses the reader sees one of the characters, Septimus, struggle with post traumatic
stress disorder brought on by serving in war. At the end of the story, he commits suicide. While
there is no explicit articulation of any other character suffering from mental illness in the novel,
Septimus is not alone. Through her thoughts and actions, we can deduce that Clarissa also
endures mental and emotional suffering. Though Clarissa does not actually attempt to end her
life in the novel, her mental and emotional suffering lead her to exhibit suicidal tendencies. To
prove this, I will examine Clarissa s thoughts and actions from a psychological perspective.
According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the following are
considered warning signs of suicide talking about feeling trapped, and talking about a feeling of
hopelessness or having no reason to live ( Suicidal Behavior ). In Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa rarely
talks openly about how she is feeling, so the other characters in the novel seldom see Clarissa as
anything but the version of herself she

Independent Vs Blockbuster Research Paper
Ever since the Supreme Court handed down the Paramount decision the film industry has been open
to everyone, not just large studios. The advent of such freedom in the business caused many smaller
entities to produce small budget films which packed a big punch. To counter this new wave large
studios had to find a moneymaking venture that the smaller producers couldn t go up against;
namely blockbuster films. This created the venue that s still in the forefront today, the blockbuster
versus the independent. Independent film, created outside of the normal studio format, is one of the
best ways that smaller budgeted producers can bring their ideas to market. Born not of the major
but of the minor independent film is a more intimate way of portraying concepts on the screen.
Usually made with a higher refined standard and better acting independent film can provide an...

The Horror genre is a very good example of a section which straddles the line between both
blockbuster and independent. The Blair Witch Project was a small budget film made on hand held
cameras for a little over half a million dollars. Event Horizon was a blockbuster made for the
towering price of 60 million. Both movies were unbelievably brutal in their ability to scare people
through use of camera techniques and excellent acting. Suspense and the methods of violence were
very similar with an unseen antagonist pursuing the main characters ultimately most to their death.
The Blair Witch Project was able to provide a wide audience a sense of impending doom through
suspenseful acting and editing. The movie provided the viewer with point of view access to on
screen happenings, putting the viewer in the middle of the action. The sense of unknowing was
very strong, giving the viewer enough ammunition to let their imagination run

The Nature of Warfare
Throughout history the nature of warfare has remained the same, it is a violent clash of
interests between or among organized groups characterized by the use of military force,
however, the character of war is constantly changing. The means by which wars are fought are no
longer limited to easily identifiable conventional forces, nor do non traditional actors abide by
the same set of international standards and rules of law. The United States can no longer expect
to face a purely conventional threat. As a result, the U.S. military must be prepared to conduct
both regular and irregular warfare successfully, although irregular warfare is more challenging
and poses a greater threat to U.S. strategic objectives. All conflicts contain elements of both
regular and irregular warfare and the nature of the conflict can easily shift between them. As a
result, the U.S. military must maintain the ability to be prepared to do both successfully and one
must not come at the expense of the other. The 2012 Defense Strategic Guidance asserts the
Wholesale divestment of the capability to conduct any mission would be unwise, based on
historical and projected uses of U.S. military forces and our inability to predict the future.
Traditional and non traditional warfare are not mutually exclusive and one form of warfare should
not take priority over the other, so it is critical that the U.S. military balance the capabilities
necessary to succeed across a wide spectrum of operations.

Company has to make the marketing strategies for making the product success in the market. And
those general strategies would be effecting in different context throughout the company. To enter

easily understandable to that country because if the product is not easily memorable to customers
then they will easily move to the substitute product and then the product will have a chance for

In Learning to Skate, Her mom forced her to go. In Brown Onions, her dad made a bet with her
to try the onions. In the first text, Learning to Skate, the way she tried skating was her mom
forced her to do it. I know this because the text states, This is the last weekend the rink is open,
her mother said. I m going out of town for work. And you re going skating with your father, (par.
20). This shows that the events in the story are influenced by the characters and in this story
Linda s mom forces her to skate. In Brown Onions, the text states, I ll make you a deal. You try a
cheeseburger with these onions on it, and if they are as bad as you say they are, I ll eat anything
you want, (par. 18). Furthermore, Deal. Call me when they re done, (par. 23). This proves that in,
Brown Onions, her dad makes a bet with her instead of forcing her to try new things. In the end, in
these texts, Learning to Skate and Brown Onions, share a common theme. The plot in each story is

Thesis Of Chief Joseph s Speech
The thoughts and circumstances of Chief Joseph addressed in his speech involved many
examples that helped support his one main topic. This subject that Chief Joseph was attempting
to entail was that white settlers should not have done what they did to Joseph s people for their
wrongdoings affected them. The words that he proclaimed and spoke was about all the actions
done against his people, as well as, how the modest of treaties do not mean anything at all
anymore and unwanted apologizes for the people and land that he and his people lost tragically.
As I was listening to every word being spoken, I strongly agreed with his reasoning as it was true
and upstanding. What the white man did to his people and their possessions, such as land, game, or
rights, was not right and acceptable to publicity. So yes, but, nevertheless, the white man... Show

All of us individually, should support Chief Joseph s speech so people can hear their side of the
story and Chief Joseph s people could receive back from all the loss that they did not deserve.
Today, nearly all confrontations between white and Indianpeople today are not usually ended
softly, due to the troubled past of both cultures. The side that is most agreeable is the Indian side
because they have yet to get justice or rights for losing what they had back then. This will change
all the fighting that is going on to equality and peace for both races to enjoy. Rising up and giving
back what was once their cultural treasures will show the Indians that not all people are alike and,
moreover, that personally do want peace. All the corruption between both cultures could correct
itself if all of us individually could just recognize the importance of the Indians as together instead
of treated oppositely based on what their culture consists of and how they

Working As An Intern Caring For Patients With Cancer On...
Reflection Assignment Working as an intern caring for patients with cancer on the Adjunctive
Cancer Care (ACC) shift at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic (RSNC) for this past year has
been a great learning experience. Although it had its own unique set of challenges, it has been a
real privilege to be a trusted part of the patients care experience. With the privilege of being a
part of patient s health care teams, there were many challenging aspects working with terminally
ill patients. I initially found it hard to fully commit to the therapeutic relationship; I wanted to
maintain some form of internal boundary to protect myself emotionally. I found as time when
on, I was more willing to open up and exposure my emotional vulnerability in order to fully meet
their needs and be there for the patient. It is a delicate balance trying to be there fully for your
patient, care for them to the fullest extent, as well as attempting to protect my own emotions and
feelings. There is a give and take to this balance, and it evolved as the relationship with the
patient evolved and my ease in the role of an intern matured. I have patients who are as close as
a friend now, after a year of working together. I am sad to be ending our therapeutic relationship
due to the end of my internship, I am also sad that I won t be having contact these patients
anymore, or being kept up to date with their health. It is a strange finality to our working
relationship; I am not yet sure how it will

The Charity Bowery By Lydia Maria Child
Although slaves were able to obtain religious agency, they were still oppressed due to the
different kinds of abuse they experienced such as emotional abuse. In Charity Bowery by Lydia
Maria Child, Child is retelling a story of an aged colored woman, Charity Bowery, from New
York. In Bowery s story she says, Sixteen children I ve had, first and last; and twelve I ve nursed
for my mistress. From the time my first baby was born, I always set my heart upon buying
freedom for some of my children. I thought it was of more consequence to them than to me; for I
was old, and used to being a slave. But mistress McKinley wouldn t let me have my children. One
after another one after another she sold em away from me. Oh, how many times that womans broke
my heart! (Child, p 12). Bowery is explaining to Child the various times her owner would not
allow her to purchase her own children. Bowery had to endure that pain of seeing her children
be sold away, one after another. This can be seen as mental abuse because Bowery had some
hope that she would be able to purchase at least one of her children s freedom, but was not able
to do so. Instead, she had to watch her children be taken away from her. Because of this mental
abuse, Bowery was oppressed due to the fact that she was not allowed to buy any of her children,
and was given false hope. Mental abuse is also seen in Josiah Hensons autobiography when he says,
The day for the execution of the penalty was appointed. The Negroes

Explication Of The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe
Holly Hecox Perdue English Composition II 28 February 2016 Explication: The Raven by
Edgar Allan Poe Through the use of an un named narrator in his poem entitled The Raven , Poe
darkly conveys feeling understood by many: hopelessness, lost love, and death. The poem
follows the un named narrator, as he reflects on, as well as struggles with, the realization of his
lost love, Lenore. Like many, he tries to detract his overwhelming feelings for Lenore by
investing his time in studying books. Despite his greatest efforts, he is unsuccessful. Much to
his surprise, his solitude is interrupted by an unanticipated visitor. Throughout the poem, Poe
uses imagery, tone, symbolism, and rhyme as a means of conveying his overall themes of
undying devotion and lingering grief. Around midnight on a bleak December night, a weak and
weary man is reading while nearly napping . He reads as a means of nullifying the sorrow he
feels for the lost Lenore . Suddenly, he is jolted alert by some visitor tapping at his chamber door.
The lonely man tells himself Tis some visitor and nothing more , but as he widely opens his
chamber door, he finds darkness there and nothing more . Staring into the darkness, the narrator
dreams about the impossibilities of his lost love, and even whispers her name; Lenore . Upon
returning to his chamber, a stronger tapping, at the window, is catching his attention. Courageously
exploring the noise, he is amused and relieved when a raven flies in from

Examples Of Hyperbole By Sarah Vowell
Sarah Vowell s use of hyperbole in her essay helped develop her humorous tone; the
exaggerations presented aided the audience in capturing an image of the relationship Vowell and
her father had. One example was in the introductory paragraph: You could have looked at the
Democratic campaign poster in the upstairs window and the Republican one in the downstairs
window and seen our home for the Civil War battleground it was. This is an example of
hyperbole because Vowell s home is not literally a war battleground; instead it feels as if it were
because of the tensions her and her father s believes have created. Another example was presented
in paragraph seven, a statement vaguely similar to the first: Our home was partitioned off into
territories. Again, Vowell s home is not literally separated; her home has a figurative barrier that her
and her father s believes have created. These exaggerations help create an image for the reader to
understand the tensions between father and daughter.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vowell s father reveals that the cannon was used as weapon to kill Indians. Also, he mentions that
her great great grandfather John Vowell had some involvement with the gun and cannon
distribution on the Bozeman Trail. Vowell most likely avoided mentioning this because it
antagonizes guns, therefore affecting her theme; her presented them was that her and her father
were much alike due to their interest in arts and crafts. Vowell was interested in arts and crafting,
and so was her father except he crafted fire arms. By having mentioned that the cannon was used
as a weapon to kill Indians antagonizes the supposed beauty these fire arms possess in the eyes of
her Vowell s

History And Philosophy Midterm Paper
Philosophy Midterm Paper For centuries scientists have been studying everything from
evolution to space. During that time, there have also been projects upon projects that were
taken on by new, emerging scientists who will continue the work of the teams who came before
them. Each new team brings a new discovery. Something that was previously just a question,
such as what makes us water different than dirt? , has now been answered due to dozens of
different teams all working towards the same goal. Thanks to those scientists, we now know
what makes water special. It s not a physical property, such as colorless, but it s the fact that it s
made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (F. Jabr 4). Taking this concept of discovery, we can
apply it to something more complex such as the definition of life. Life is complicated, and many
teams of researchers and scientists alike have worked towards the goal of defining it. Before
reading this article, it was assumed that the scientific community could basically agree on one
conclusion: A living thing has order, grows and develops, maintains homeostasis, has a metabolic
structure, reacts to stimuli, reproduces, and evolves. This definition of life can be compacted into
this simple statement made by NASA, [Life is] a self sustaining system capable of Darwinian
evolution. However, this statement has been proven untrue by Ferris Jabr s theory that life doesn t
actually exist because it s a concept rooted in the human mind. The reason he

Jean Lockhart Theme Of Power
In her novel, E. Lockhart uses the abundance of situational suspense to reveal the theme of
power. In chapter 72, Candence, Mirren, Johnny, and Gat are planning to start the fire. The plan
was simple. We would find the spare jugs of gas, the ones kept in the shed for the motorboats.
There were newspapers and cardboards in the mudroom: We d build piles of recycling and soak
those in gasoline. We d soak the wood floors as well. Stand back, light a paper towel roll and
throw it. Easy. We would light every floor, every room, if possible, to make sure Clairmont burned
completely. Gat in the basement, me on the ground floor, Johnny on the second, and Mirren on top.
The fire departments arrived really late, says Mirren. Two fire departments,

  • 2. The Search for America in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend... The Search for America in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow In the early to mid 1800 s, Washington Irving was an immensely popular writer heralded as one of the great American writers. Irving s importance lies especially in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the sketches in which he creates the vision of the alternate America(n). His critique of American society through his main characters Rip and Ichabod and the towns in which they live gives shape to an America not usually acknowledged by his contemporaries, and thus crucial to American literary studies today. J. Hector St. JohnDe Crevecoeur, who created the most definitive statement of American circa Irving s time, certainly would not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this light Crevecoeur, rather than belittling America, gives America a special importance. Although Americans have European influences at their core, they will do more than simply act on those European traits in a new setting. Rather, they will bring different traits from every aspect of Europe to create [. . .] the most perfect society now existing in the world (642). While it could be argued that Irving does just that in creating his stories, the stories themselves are a far cry from calling America the most perfect society on earth.. By Crevecoeur s definition, the creation of Irving s work was very American. He wrote roughly forty five short stories, and No less than a third are traceable [. . .] to German sources (Pochmann, 1186 7). Among this third are Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which both draw heavily from German sources especially Musaeus Volksmarchen (Hoffman, 347 8). What Irving did, though, was to take the myths of Europe and create uniquely American stories. But while the creation of the stories seems to fit Crevecoeur s mold of what American is, the message in Irving s sketches far from endorses this notion of America as the perfect society assimilating all of the good of Europe. For this to occur, America would have to assimilate European ideas and ideas. Irving seems to take exception to this. II. The Melting Pot For Crevecoeur, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All over the world millions of people gather in one place to enjoy various artists, foods and good company. What most of the world does not realize is the environmental shock these extremely popular festivals are putting on our planet. The most notable ideas concerning waste, traffic and travel, and the status and outcomes of environmental ideas and impacts on our planet in the music festival culture come from agreenerfestival.com, and Judith Mair and Jennifer Laing. Countless hours spending your whole day in one place, forgetting water bottles and obviously getting hungry, as humans these acts are just part of our nature. Many thousands of people to feed and hydrate there is no doubt about it the waste construction would be a considerable issue at music festivals. Trash is known to be the most catastrophic problem regarding the environment at these festivals. The main problem is too much trash and not enough places to store it or simply just the laziness of festival goers not respecting their surroundings, 81% of people strongly agreed or agreed that they would most likely separate their trash is separate bins (agreenerfestival.com). , furthermore the initial problem is that even though there is waste bins not enough people are disposing of their trash. Lenin and Stalin s social policies were to get rid of religion. Lenin and Stalin were also comparable in their economic policies, which were to have the government control the economy. Stalin s economic policies broke with Lenin s to create, what were in effect, two new Soviet revolutions in industry and in agriculture. • 7. Analysis Of The Book The Ugly American The book The Ugly American clearly demonstrates several of the established Special Operations Force (SOF) imperatives outlined in ADRP 6 22. As a Special Forces soldier I can relate these imperatives to stories illustrated in the book and apply them to real life situations that I have experienced in the field. The Ugly American is a goldmine of wisdom and a handbook for special warfare. All Special Operations soldiers should read it. The first SOF imperative is to Understand the Operational Environment. The character of Ambassador MacWhite clearly illustrates this imperative during his preparation for his new assignment as Ambassador to Sarkhan. He learns the language, researches their history and political life, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would have been my sixth trip to the Philippines. However, this trip was different. Our detachment never had a trained Intelligence Sergeant, so our senior Communications Sergeant took it upon himself to prepare a cultural study and information brief for the detachment. I was so impressed; he broke down the demographics, the religious conflicts, and addressed political and economic considerations. I learned more in that brief than I had from the five previous exercises in the Philippines. At that time, I was no different from Ambassador Sears. I displayed arrogance over our counterparts. I viewed them as less than us, uninterested in training, and lazy. Looking back, why would they be interested in anything we had to offer? We neglected to develop personal relationships with them, dictated their training according to our needs, and bossed them around on the range like subordinates. Like Sears, I did not try to learn the language. It was not my target language, so I did not consider it a priority, even though I had predictable reoccurring engagements there. I went to western style parties and ate at western style restaurants. Ultimately, I trained hard and had a tight shot group, but never realized I was aiming at the wrong target. About a year latter, I reached my Date Of Return from Over Seas (DEROS) and left the CIF. I spent the next three years as an instructor. When I returned to a detachment, it was as the Team ... • 8. Theme Of Confusion In Atonement Confusion is an archetypal storytelling motif, seen in such classics as Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare as well as modern television. This motif, whether it s referenced as the fog of war, confusion, or simply misconceptions, has progressed intriguing plots for centuries. Often, confusion follows one seeking to find transparent, black and white truths where they don t exist. In modern literature, a prime model of the effects of confusion can be seen in Ian McEwans Atonement. Atonement, being a novel founded upon a principle of varied versions of reality created through misunderstandings triggered by adolescence and a lust for control, shows how the act of seeking clear black and white answers in a gray world often leads to a loss of control... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Briony, in her final note in the book, begins speaking of how she identifies the fact that she creates her own realities through her writing and, reasonably, lives them out. She states, how can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God? (McEwan 350). Briony s experienced state shows how she has identified how her youthful state and her role as a novelist have created her own versions of reality and that she cannot achieve atonement because it is something only she can give to herself. In other words, Briony has come to the conclusion that she cannot be forgiven for actions, that she had lost control of her life when she tried to take control of it at a young age, and how her youthful imagination had upset the worldly balance when it began tampering with the real world. Briony has clearly come to grips with the idea that the world is not black and white; rather, it is a very indiscernible creation that can easily be corrupted by those who attempt to control ... • 9. Seinfeld s Impact on American Culture Essay Seinfeld s Impact on American Culture Jerry Seinfeld s television sitcom, Seinfeld, which went off the air in 1999, is still one of the most culturally pertinent shows today. The show dealt with little nuances of American society. A puffy shirt, for example, could be the main subject for an entire show. This show, which was derived from Jerry Seinfeld s observational humor, was voted as the Greatest Show of All Time by TV Guide in 2002. According to the show s official website, the ratings for the syndicated version of Seinfeld are ahead of many of the current primetime comedies ( Seinfeld 2/5). Of his obsessive nature his mother said: He never wanted just a piece of chocolate cake, it was the whole cake. And he always waited until he got what he wanted ( Jerry Seinfeld 1/7). Soon Seinfeld s easy to relate to humor gave way to regular appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman. Other more gimmicky comedians failed the test of time, but Seinfeld s steadfast style made his popularity bloom. Despite national exposure, Seinfeld still stayed close to his roots, continuing to play at small venues as well as on television. With jokes like: They say Tide cleans bloodstains. I say if you ve got a T shirt with bloodstains, then maybe laundry isn t your biggest problem ( Jerry Seinfeld 3/7) it s not hard to see why Seinfeld caught on. In 1990, Seinfeld, a sitcom based on Seinfeld s humor, debuted as a summer replacement show. Seinfeld allowed characters on the show to embody some of the idiosyncrasies his stand up comedy had observed. Seinfeld played himself on the show, and the other characters on the sitcom were based on friends and acquaintances in Seinfeld s real life. The show was set in a recognizable Manhattan with specific storefronts and locales in the cut scenes and dialogue. • 10. How Trade Agreements And Sugar Exports Affect The U.s.... 1.1 Problem Statement The goal of this paper is to describe and analyze how trade agreements and sugar imports affect the U.S. sugar market and program. 1.2 Background With the U.S. generating domestic sugar from both the sugarcane and sugar beet industries, the U.S. is among the world s largest sugar producers and generated over $4 billion in cash receipts in 2015 2016 (U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS), 2017A). Sugar beets account for 55 percent of production, sugarcane produces 45 percent of the total domestic sugar production (USDA ERS, 2017A). Section 3 describes the method and data used to determine impact of trade agreement on the U.S. sugar program. Lastly, section 4 will discuss the conclusions and offers recommendations for future study. 2. Conceptual Framework As aforementioned, the U.S. sugar production is large, and in spite this, sugar imported under trade agreements affect the domestic market. Consequently, to understand the U.S. sugar market, a dive into U.S. production supply and trade agreement obligations is required to understand how these elements support the U.S. sugar program. Corresponding to domestic demand, the U.S. sugar market constraints the amount of domestic cane sugar and beet sugar produced to not exceed 85% of the estimated U.S. demand (McMinimy, 2016). In addition to four smaller trade agreements with nine countries, a larger part of the unfilled U.S. consumption demand comes from importation under WTO and NAFTA allocations (McMinimy, 2016; USDA FAS, 2017). Based on patterns from the unrestricted free trade period of 1975 1981, the U.S. Trade Representative allocates a WTO tariff rate quota (TRQ) allocation with 40 countries and the USDA executes the sugar program each FY, beginning October 1 each year (USDA ERS, 2017B). The TRQ system applies to imports of raw cane sugar, refined sugar, sugar syrups, specialty sugars and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The American Company Called Amazon 1) Introduction In order to carry out this research, I have chosen the American company called Amazon. It is a well known, web based international retailer which is based in Seattle, Washington. 2) Product Description Amazon started out as a simple web auctions based service in kind to eBay, but failed to cut into the market share. The company then became a marketplace for fixed price goods much like an online retail website with a small collection of goods for sale. Over time it started to develop its product line and range by supplying DVDs, CDs, software, apparel, beauty products, groceries, health care products, kitchen supplies, jewelry, musical instruments and other items (Mudambi and Schuff, 2010). The website was able to provide an online platform to these products. As the company matured, it expanded its retail services and then also developed delivery services of its products to people s doorsteps at the prescribed time. Demand and Future Outlook The basic nature of the demand curve will always be negatively sloped as people would be willing to demand less at higher prices and higher at lower prices. The factors which can affect the demand curve and cause it to shift for Amazon will include number of buyers. As buyers in the market increase, the curve will shift outwards as more people will be willing to buy at the same price. As the income of the people also rises, they would be able to afford more products from Amazon so they will buy them shifting the demand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Similarities Between Prairie Dogs And Jaguars In this essay, I will go into detail about two examples of keystone species. First, I will talk about prairie dogs and then I will talk about jaguars. Both species contribute and add to the life in their environments both directly and indirectly. Next, I will discuss the consequences if the prairie dogs and the jaguars left their habitats. Lastly, I will talk about similarities and differences between the two species. Prairie Dogs live in the western Great Plains region of the United States. Specifically, they live in grasslands. They live in tunnels with rooms that they use as shelter. Prairie Dogs aerate and fertilize soil, which in turn gives life to plantspecies native to the Plains. They also help provide life for animals native to the plains such as wolves, bison, bees, and birds. Prairie Dogs are considered a keystone species because they provide life to plants and animals, which would find great difficulty surviving without them. Jaguars are considered to be a keystone species because they control the populations of animals who would decimate plant life in the Central and South American regions. Jaguar populations are currently in decline. Deforestation and poaching tend to be the leading factors of why jaguars are dying off at such a significant rate. • 14. Angell s Belief in Functionalism and John Watson s Belief... It was also suggested by Angell(1913) that consciousness was best if forgotten and there should be a objective method of describing animal and human behavior but also believed that if it were to exist , it should definitely be of some use for an organism . The statement also suggests that it was not only John Watson the founder of behaviorism who proposed the idea rather it was thought about before him. His rise and influence was probably because of introducing the idea at a time when it could be accepted by the time and tide of that period. Psychology had been the study of mind from a very long time and was represented by the method of introspection defined as studying the mind by analyzing the thoughts. Angell s functionalism aimed to apply psychology and its methods to real life problems however the problem with both structuralism and functionalism was that the methods were not reliable and introspection was considered to be a problem rather than a solution. Psychology could not convince people of its usefulness and practical problem and the founder of behaviorism John Watson believed that both structuralism and functionalism were subjective and introduced behaviorism as objective. (Moore ,2011) which was considered to be a transformation from one phase of science to another . (Gardner ,1985) Behaviorism has been believed to influence everyday life from parenting and learning to employee perks in organizations. It aims to study behavior and how it can be changed, it ... There are more cars on the road today, and because of this we experience higher levels of pollution than before. The automobile is probably the leading contributor pollution in our cities. They release toxic emissions into our atmosphere. Automobiles are linked particularly to carbon monoxide pollution. They are noisy (especially if you are living near the highway), and they take up valuable space in the form of vast parking lots that are unpleasing to the eye. Americans are known for our passion for the automobile. The automobile symbolizes freedom and independence. Freedom is the backbone of our country. Many of our historical documents were written with freedom as the major theme. For example, the declaration of independence proposes freedom from an oppressive government. Freedom is a concept that most Americans take pride in. For this reason, the automobile is attractive to us. If you own your own automobile, you are free to go any place you like whenever you want. You suddenly become independent and you no longer have to rely on other people for rides. This is a common feeling among 16 year olds. With the acquisition of the drivers license comes a whole new world of opportunity and responsibility. Another factor to be considered is the American concept of time. Time is money. Because of this we are usually in a hurry, so we hop in our cars and off we go, late for some sort of an appointment. We could use alternate forms of transportation like busses or railways which decrease pollution by decreasing the total number of cars on our roads, but these forms of transportation are not as convenient as driving ourselves. There exists the classic principal agent problem with regulators needing good data about firm s pollution levels, but the firms do not have a medium or drive of providing such information. PROPER has wisely combined multiple set of environmental indicators into a color coded scheme through technical support from international agencies such as the World Bank, to increase public understanding (Kanungo and Torres, n.d.; Ardiansyah, 2014). This transformation of public environmental communication in Indonesia has proven to be a breakthrough in its environmental policy and holds a promising example for Pakistan to apply. I watched them with a look of shock on my face. The way they portray women, in such an over sexualized way, was shocking to me. Compared to where I come from, America is relatively closed when talking about topics surrounding sex. This use of women and sex in the media is a recurring theme that I have seen in my years of living in the United States. The female in the picture hurt her mouth by opening too wide when eating a Burger King burger. This supports their idea of having bigger burgers compared to their competition. This brought up the argument of the sexualisation women in the media today. The creator of the ad uses Burger Kings reputation and brand name to establish credibility. He speaks to an emotional appeal with the choice of picture, and subject in the picture used. His connection made with Band Aids and bigger leads to an logical approach of why their burgers are the biggest and best. This ad immediately got my attention, in a negative way. When further analyzing the picture, my feelings only got stronger. Others might have a very different reaction, but the hidden emotional message is something that doesn t feel right to me. The picture uses a close up image of a women s mouth. They purposely focus on a sexy part of the female body, while keeping distance from direct sexual body parts. It is an over sexualized message hidden underneath the picture, so that people wouldn t immediately draw that conclusion of sexualization. She is white, and young. As art often imitates life, it is not surprising that characters in Woolf s works also struggle with mental illness. One of her novels, Mrs. Dalloway, recounts a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a high society woman living in London, and those who run in her circle. As the novel progresses the reader sees one of the characters, Septimus, struggle with post traumatic stress disorder brought on by serving in war. At the end of the story, he commits suicide. While there is no explicit articulation of any other character suffering from mental illness in the novel, Septimus is not alone. Through her thoughts and actions, we can deduce that Clarissa also endures mental and emotional suffering. Though Clarissa does not actually attempt to end her life in the novel, her mental and emotional suffering lead her to exhibit suicidal tendencies. To prove this, I will examine Clarissa s thoughts and actions from a psychological perspective. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the following are considered warning signs of suicide talking about feeling trapped, and talking about a feeling of hopelessness or having no reason to live ( Suicidal Behavior ). In Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa rarely talks openly about how she is feeling, so the other characters in the novel seldom see Clarissa as anything but the version of herself she ... The Nature of Warfare Throughout history the nature of warfare has remained the same, it is a violent clash of interests between or among organized groups characterized by the use of military force, however, the character of war is constantly changing. The means by which wars are fought are no longer limited to easily identifiable conventional forces, nor do non traditional actors abide by the same set of international standards and rules of law. The United States can no longer expect to face a purely conventional threat. As a result, the U.S. military must be prepared to conduct both regular and irregular warfare successfully, although irregular warfare is more challenging and poses a greater threat to U.S. strategic objectives. All conflicts contain elements of both regular and irregular warfare and the nature of the conflict can easily shift between them. As a result, the U.S. military must maintain the ability to be prepared to do both successfully and one must not come at the expense of the other. The 2012 Defense Strategic Guidance asserts the Wholesale divestment of the capability to conduct any mission would be unwise, based on historical and projected uses of U.S. military forces and our inability to predict the future. Traditional and non traditional warfare are not mutually exclusive and one form of warfare should not take priority over the other, so it is critical that the U.S. military balance the capabilities necessary to succeed across a wide spectrum of operations. ... The Charity Bowery By Lydia Maria Child Although slaves were able to obtain religious agency, they were still oppressed due to the different kinds of abuse they experienced such as emotional abuse. In Charity Bowery by Lydia Maria Child, Child is retelling a story of an aged colored woman, Charity Bowery, from New York. In Bowery s story she says, Sixteen children I ve had, first and last; and twelve I ve nursed for my mistress. From the time my first baby was born, I always set my heart upon buying freedom for some of my children. I thought it was of more consequence to them than to me; for I was old, and used to being a slave. But mistress McKinley wouldn t let me have my children. One after another one after another she sold em away from me. Oh, how many times that womans broke my heart! (Child, p 12). Bowery is explaining to Child the various times her owner would not allow her to purchase her own children. Bowery had to endure that pain of seeing her children be sold away, one after another. This can be seen as mental abuse because Bowery had some hope that she would be able to purchase at least one of her children s freedom, but was not able to do so. Instead, she had to watch her children be taken away from her. Because of this mental abuse, Bowery was oppressed due to the fact that she was not allowed to buy any of her children, and was given false hope. Explication Of The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe Holly Hecox Perdue English Composition II 28 February 2016 Explication: The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe Through the use of an un named narrator in his poem entitled The Raven , Poe darkly conveys feeling understood by many: hopelessness, lost love, and death. The poem follows the un named narrator, as he reflects on, as well as struggles with, the realization of his lost love, Lenore. Like many, he tries to detract his overwhelming feelings for Lenore by investing his time in studying books. Despite his greatest efforts, he is unsuccessful. Much to his surprise, his solitude is interrupted by an unanticipated visitor. Throughout the poem, Poe uses imagery, tone, symbolism, and rhyme as a means of conveying his overall themes of undying devotion and lingering grief. Around midnight on a bleak December night, a weak and weary man is reading while nearly napping . He reads as a means of nullifying the sorrow he feels for the lost Lenore . Suddenly, he is jolted alert by some visitor tapping at his chamber door. The lonely man tells himself Tis some visitor and nothing more , but as he widely opens his chamber door, he finds darkness there and nothing more . Staring into the darkness, the narrator dreams about the impossibilities of his lost love, and even whispers her name; Lenore . Upon returning to his chamber, a stronger tapping, at the window, is catching his attention. Courageously exploring the noise, he is amused and relieved when a raven flies in from ... This is an example of hyperbole because Vowell s home is not literally a war battleground; instead it feels as if it were because of the tensions her and her father s believes have created. Another example was presented in paragraph seven, a statement vaguely similar to the first: Our home was partitioned off into territories. During that time, there have also been projects upon projects that were taken on by new, emerging scientists who will continue the work of the teams who came before them. Something that was previously just a question, such as what makes us water different than dirt? , has now been answered due to dozens of different teams all working towards the same goal. Thanks to those scientists, we now know what makes water special. It s not a physical property, such as colorless, but it s the fact that it s made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (F. Jabr 4). Taking this concept of discovery, we can apply it to something more complex such as the definition of life. Life is complicated, and many teams of researchers and scientists alike have worked towards the goal of defining it. Before reading this article, it was assumed that the scientific community could basically agree on one conclusion: A living thing has order, grows and develops, maintains homeostasis, has a metabolic structure, reacts to stimuli, reproduces, and evolves. This definition of life can be compacted into this simple statement made by NASA, [Life is] a self sustaining system capable of Darwinian evolution.
