Sacrifice In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row
In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row, Steinbeck focuses on traditional society but a society with different
values. His society is the traditional society including class, the homeless, uneducated, but instead
Steinbeck captures the humanity in the homeless, the bums, and prostitutes along with the uneducated.
Steinbeck carries out the riches parts in the characters personalities and isn t defining them for riches
in their bank accounts. He uses friendship and sacrifice as their humanity scale in the novel. Steinbeck
uses adventures in the novel for a way of explaining life on a broader scale. In a general idea, the main
characters Mack and the boys are considered failures in society. It states, trussed up men scream at
them and call them no gods,

Analysis Of The Movie Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor Film Review A romantic classic, From Here to Eternity was released in 1953. The film
was directed by Fred Zinnemann and produced by Columbia Pictures. From Here to Eternity is based
on the days prior to Pearl Harbor and the day of in Hawaii. One of the main characters, Prewitt played
by Montgomery Clift, was a private who was abused by the army for not joining the units boxing
team, but choosing to play the bugle instead. Cold hearted Capt. Holmes was played by Philip Ober.
He orders Prewitt to a many unnecessary tasks while his wife, Deborah Kerr, cheats on him with
another Sargent, Burt Lancaster. From Here to Eternity is historically accurate since it coincides with
the material from Richard Overy s Why the Allies Won and John Jefferies Wartime America. First, the
film is historically accurate of the date in which the Japanese attacked U.S. Naval Base at Pearl
Harbor. The entire film took place in Hawaii, USA and it portrayed the attack that occurred on
December 7 Japanese aircraft attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor (Overy p.15) The
films date was the same as the date reported in the Overy novel, making a direct factual connection of
the event. Secondly Jefferies book and Fred Zinnemann s film both brought out the significance of
marriage in America in 1941. The essential theme in the film is romance and finding someone to
marry. Not only was the consistent idea of new marriages displayed in the movie, but Jefferies book

Analysis Of Without Tahna I Cannot Sleep
Essay 2 Final: Devotion to God
I. Introduction
The female saint, Mirabai, expressed her devotion to the deity Krishna through songs of love and
longing. Mirabai s song, Without Krishna I Cannot Sleep, conveys this desire to be united with the
Lord Krishna.
A fifteenth century princess of Rajasthan, Mirabai entered into an advantageous marriage at a young
age (Fisher 82). When her husband died, her in laws made their wishes clear that she was to sacrifice
herself and throw herself onto his funeral pyre (Fisher and Bailey 82). Ignoring their wishes, Mirabai
chose to forsake the luxuries of the palace life and become a wanderer, devoting her life to the deity
Krishna (Fisher and Bailey 82). Mirabai s life and devotional practices serve as a model of the
spiritual path of bhakti yoga. Initially considered mad, Mirabai brushed off any hostilities and danced
with a blissful ecstasy in the streets (Fisher 105). She paid little heed to social conventions and
described herself as, defiant of world censure or family shame (Fisher 105). Free from societal
constraints, Mirabai sung devotions like, Without Krishna I Cannot Sleep, during her time as a
wanderer around 1500 and 1550. As one of the more popular female saints within the bhakti tradition,
Mirabai s songs still influence Hindu devotional practices today as an insight to realization outside of
classic Sanskrit tradition (Fisher 105). Her songs in the vernacular attracted many common people,
who were able to understand her realizations and share her love for the Lord Krishna (Fisher and
Bailey 80). Her sainthood was also representative of an upheaval of the classic Sanskrit tradition,
where brahman men were in control (Fisher and Baily 81). The bhakti tradition allowed anyone, no
matter the class or gender, to become a saint (Fisher and Baily 81). Through the spiritual path of
bhakti yoga, Mirabai was able to become a saint and influence Krishna devotees.
II. Without Krishna I Cannot Sleep Mirabai threw herself into her devotion to Krishna wholeheartedly.
Her songs attributed to the deity are filled with feelings love and tortured longing, as the saint
expresses her need to be united with her one true love, the Lord Krishna (Mirabai 82). The use of

First Person Narration in Charlotte Perkins Gilman s The Yellow Wallpaper and Edgar Allen Poe s the
Black Cat
In The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Gilman and The Black
Cat By Edgar Allen Poe, two short and sinister stories, 1st person narration is used by both authors to
create atmospheric tension and unease. By using 1st person narration, a story told through the eyes of
one person present in that story, the authors can get far more intimate and detailed in the individual
characters feelings and emotions. This makes it an invaluable style of writing if the readers are
intended to empathise with the character. It is controlled voyeurism, peering into another s
consciences and seeing the world through their eyes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The style of diary type writing is kept the same throughout, and although the quality never varies, the
unease comes from the increasingly peculiar fascinations that are the topic of the journal (the
wallpaper, for example);
From;
The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow… An innocent, if somewhat
disapproving comment on the colour of the wallpaper, to such ravings as:
The front pattern DOES move and no wonder! The woman behind it shakes it!
The reasoning becomes increasingly irrational and far fetched, compared to the cold logic from the
narrator of The Black Cat .
The atmosphere and sense of unease is greatly affected by the ability to see into someone else s mind.
Using a 1st person narrative in this context only adds to the overall ominous and immoral feeling of
witnessing such events, to be witnessing them at the hands of the criminals and victims. Poe uses it to
create a more fearful yet explainable chain of events;
I detail with awe, nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects.

The Authority Of Religious Elites In The 1640s Witch Hunts
The Authority of Religious Elites in the 1640s Witch Hunts The large scale witch hunts that occurred
from 1638 to 1651 gathered momentum via major happenings in the political, societal, and religious
domains developing at the time. Individuals who had either political, religious or economic power in
society, also known as elites, together had absolute control over the pursuit and prosecution of
individuals who partook in witchcraft. The clergy played a crucial role in the witchcraft prosecutions
and were slower than the state and localities to desert their beliefs in the reality of witches as the
prosecution of witchcraft was, in their eyes, an effective tool to eradicate social deviance. Though
local authorities and the Parliament did contribute to the witch hunts significantly, without the kirk of
Scotland declaring and encouraging this sanction on witchcraft, both other parties would not have
taken the actions they ultimately did. This essay will provide a brief description of events that took
place from 1638 to 1651 and then utilize evidence from a multitude of sources to argue that the
religious elites were the most influential of these forces during the witchcraft prosecutions that
occurred in the 1640s. Due to the Scots dissatisfaction with the current monarch, King Charles I, the
National Covenant was formed by on February 28th in 1638 at Greyfrairs Kirk in Edinburgh. All his
subjects were welcome to sign this document as it was viewed as an irrevocable contract

Embargo on Cuba
Embargo on Cuba The U.S. imposed an Embargo on Cuba on Oct. 19, 1960. Has the time come for
the United States to lift the 5 decade embargo? The Embargo on Cuba was a part of America s Cold
War strategy against the Soviet Union, imposed on the basis that Cuba was a threat to the U.S.
National Security because of their alliance with the Soviet Union. Although Cuba would like the U.S
to terminate the embargo against their country, the U.S. wants Cuba to make their situation a better
living environment and to promote human rights for its citizens. The Cuban Embargo, also known as
el bloqueo to Cuban citizens, was declared by the United States in 1960 to eliminate imports of Cuban
goods. When the embargo was first set, it was only to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Raul Castro has gradually implanted major economic reforms and lifted travel restrictions, which will
help the country strengthen its international position. Because of Raul making huge changes for Cuba,
the island has let in allowing Cubans to buy or sell property, expand consumer goods such as, DVD
players, microwaves, cell phones and internet service. These small but large changes for Cuba, that
Raul changed, is making a huge impact on the isolated island. Now, because of Raul s changes, the
U.S. talks with Cuban officials every 6 months to see how everything is playing out (Frank). Many
people in the U.S. do not agree with the Embargo on Cuba because they seem to agree with the fact
that the embargo hurts the Cuban citizens more than the government. Cuba s relationship with the
Soviet Union during the Cold War rose concerns about U.S. National Security, but the era is long over.
The USSR dissolved in 1991, and American policy has adapted to change in most aspects apart from
Embargo. If 50 years of sanctions have not toppled the Castro regime, there is no reason to think the
embargo will ever work. U.S. has economic relations with countries like China and Saudi Arabia that
have similarly been called out for repressing dissent. Iran, for example, stands as the greatest threat to
United States National Security interests in 2014 much like Cuba

Essay on Napoleon s Failure to Dominate Europe
Napoleon s Failure to Dominate Europe
A ruler s reputation comes from the change that he inflicts upon his subjects, territory, and
surrounding lands. Napoleon Bonaparte rose into power during the French Revolution, causing drastic
changes not only to France, but to the rest of Europe as well. His domestic and foreign policies were
not always successful, but his ability to rule was undeniable. From his rising in power and reform of
France, up until his military defeat in Russia, Napoleon succeeded in gaining a considerate amount of
power and control.
In France, Napoleon used his power to make many reforms in all aspects of life. He incorporated a

Also, the Civil Code limited some of the rights of women. Divorce was made more difficult for them,
and after marriage, the husband had control of their property. In lawsuits, they were treated as minors,
and their testimony was regarded as less reliable than that of men. (World History 641) Also, there
were limitations on personal freedom such as press censorship, the use of spies, and the imprisonment
of extremists. (Modern Times 58) In his domestic policies...Napoleon both destroyed and preserved
aspects of the revolution. Even so, it appears that for the time being, Napoleon kept the people fairly
well satisfied. (Modern Times 58)
Napoleon accomplished much during his era. The name Napoleon recalls to mind great battles won,
mighty countries humbled, and the near establishment of a union of all Europe under the supreme
leadership of Napoleonic France. (Modern Times 59) But as others had discovered before him...no
nation can rule Europe for long. (The World in 1800 p89) Later came his ultimate downfall the
Russian Campaign in 1812.
While the Continental System was enforced, Russia was an ally of France, so Napoleon expected
Russia to support the anti British blockade policy. (Modern Times 62) Later, when he found that
Alexander I of Russia opened Russian ports to British commerce, (Modern Times 65) Napoleon
wanted to punish him because other countries might follow Russia s act.

The Boy Scout Law And ACM Code Of Ethics
Many companies and professional societies adopt or create their own codes of ethics for their
employees and members to adhere to. These guiding principles construct the foundations of individual
codes of ethics that engineers, employees, and members of these groups then follow during their lives.
As engineers and citizens of a global society we do not solely rely upon adopted codes of ethics to
guide us when it comes to making decisions in scenarios that challenge our judgement of right and
wrong. A personal code of ethics is constructed by individuals and is unique to every person based
upon the living conditions they grew up in.
My ethical codes foundations lie in the Boy Scout Law which has played a significant role in the way
I have lived my life to this day, as well as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) code of
Ethics and Professional Conduct because of my title as a computer scientist . While the Boy Scout
Law and ACM code of Ethics and Professional Conduct are both well acknowledged universal
standards within their own perspective fields, my personal code of ethics has also been influenced by
my family, friends, as well as the way in which information has been presented to me. People are a
product of their own environment and the places which we have grown up provide us with our first
impressions of what is morally right or wrong. Learning in an environment like the one at UCSB has
also shifted my own ideas of what is right or wrong, and taking course like

Janie s Vision Under The Pear Tree Analysis
Hurston s description of Janie s vision under the pear tree conveys the ideals of love and intimacy. As
shown by the follow description: She saw a dust bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the
thousand sister calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to
tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. So this was a marriage! She had
been summoned to behold a revelation. Then Janie felt a pain remorseless sweet that left her limp and
languid. From this description, one can see that Janie sees the pear tree and bee is very intimate and
this starts representing love to her. This vision is an awakening for Janie and she starts wanting to be
intimate and loved. Her future ideals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nanny believes in marriage and material wealth as the ideal goal for a black woman. This is due to her
past as a slave and her and her daughter s unmarried status due to them being forced into illicit
relationships and raped. So all through her life, nanny has seen having property, being protected by
your husband, and having time for leisure as an ideal. However, this point of view has limitations as
shown by when Janie complains to her nanny about her lack of love and her nanny is unable to
comprehend it and instead says You come head wid yo mouf full uh foolishness on uh busy day. Yeah
you got uh prop to lean on all yo bawn days, and big protection, and everybody s got tuh tip the hat to
you and call you Mis Killicks, and you come worryin me bout love. This lack of understanding shows
that nanny s point of view is limited, because, unlike Janie, she doesn t realize there s more to life than
status and wealth. The book doesn t support this viewpoint either, because it is clear that Janie is the
happiest when she is living and working with tea cake in the Everglades. Her happiness proves that
she didn t need the wealth or leisure lifestyle, she just needed to be loved and cared for by her

The Role Of Class In The Gilded Age And Progressive Era
Class
To begin, class influenced the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in the changing working conditions as
a response to industrialization. Class was also apparent in Gilded Age politics and in the changing
political culture that foreshadowed the bureaucratic government of the Progressives. Middle Class
Progressives played a vital role in America by seeking reform and influence among the upper and
working class. Thus, class assumed a prominent role in influencing the Gilded Age and Progressive
Era. Changing Working Conditions
In the 19th century, there were several structural changes in the nature of work. These changes
included deskilling of jobs, which led to the decline of the heroic artisan and economic depressions.
All these factors contributed to tense strikes between workers and employers. During the Antebellum
period, most white American workers were self reliant, but the nature of work and production began to
shift after the Civil War, as the industrial workplace increased in size, immigration swelled, and the
number of wage workers surpassed that of self employed men. Thus, heroic artisans experienced
threats with the emergence of a class of permanent wage workers, which killed their republic dreams
for American economic self sufficiency, property ownership, and self employment. Nevertheless, the
real challenge for white wage Americans began in the 1870s and 1880s, as xenophobic anxieties of
Chinese workers emerged. [1]
Additionally, the late 19th century was

Essay The Improper Use of Patient Restraints
The Improper Use of Patient Restraints Running head: PATIENT RESTRAINT PROTOCOLS Patient
restraints have been a hot issue within the past ten to fifteen years in nursing. There have been
numerous studies done on the adverse affects restraints have on patients, physiologically and
psychologically. Anger, fear, impaired mobility, bladder and bowel incontinence, eating difficulty, skin
breakdown, and nosocomial infections have all been associated with the use of restraints (Weeks,
1997; Janelli, 1995). Therefore, there has been a move to limit the use of restraints and develop safer
protocols for the times that they are used. All hospitals, today, have restraint protocols that nursing
staff should follow when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the patients are at risk for falls due to neurological problems. There are at least two to three
patients restrained on the unit on a daily basis. Some of the reasons nurses restrain patients are to
prevent them from harming themselves or others, to help maintain treatment plans, and to control
confused or agitated patients (Stratmann, Vinson, Magee and Hardin, 1997). The most frequently used
restraints are vests, wrist, belts/ties, mitten and ankle, in that order (Stratmann et al., 1997). Many
research studies currently taking place are focused towards discovering alternatives to restraints.
Identifying successful alternatives to restraints and educating nurses about alternatives has helped in
reducing the use of restraints (Winston, Morelli, Bramble, Friday and Sanders, 1999; Weeks, 1997).
There are times, however, when restraints are needed to protect patients (Richman, 1998; Dibartolo,
1998). Restraints would be indicated for an intubated patient who keeps pulling out his endotracheal
tube. In such cases, failing to use restraints could result in a claim or lawsuit being brought on for
negligence (Richman, 1998). In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on
restraints because of the nearly 300 deaths and injuries related to restraint use occurring each year
(Janelli, 1995). Problems identified by the FDA included inappropriate restraint selection, errors in
applying devices, and inadequate monitoring of the

Carol Ann Duffy Shooting Stars
Carol Ann Duffy s poem Shooting Stars is a poem in which human suffering is effectively portrayed.
Duffy uses the situation of Nazi persecution of the Jewish people to underline this. Duffy s use of an
ambiguous title, together with her imagery effectively explores this theme of human suffering.
The poem s title Shooting Stars creates a sense of ambiguity. The general connotations applied to this
phrase are that of a falling star or perhaps the beauty and brightness of fireworks. However it is not
until we reach the actual content of the poem that we realise that the stars in question are those Stars
of David, sewn on to the garments of Jews on the order of the Nazi regime. Duffy establishes the
darkness and horror of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the closing stanzas of the poem Duffy once again highlights the immensity of the horror of those
events by contrasting them with the civilised activities of the human being i.e. the tea on the lawn and
the boy washing his uniform . And these activities apply to the reader, as they read of such events and
yet return to their everyday lives, they run to our toys to the oblivion that forgetfulness brings. She
uses ellipsis once more, only this time the soil of time is shovelled over Sara Ezra ...We forget all too
quickly.
The final lines end on a note of tragedy for the poet returns us to the inside of the concentration camp
where inside the wire ...strong men wept . The poet again emphasises the extent, the immensity of this
event, when strong men are unable to tolerate this. This return back to the concentration camps also
shows the cyclic nature of suffering in Duffy s message to the reader, humans inflict suffering unto
other humans and then when the events have been forgotten they are repeated. The closing lines of the
poem Turn thee/unto me with mercy for I am desolate and lost is a reworking of verse six teen Psalm
twenty five which is a prayer from King David to God in which David places his absolute trust in
God. Extending this idea in that the Jews themselves ask the

2. Provide an example of a government created monopoly. Is it a bad public policy? Why?
In many cases, the emergence of monopolies linked to the provision by the government to an
individual or company exclusive rights to sell the goods (tobacco, salt, etc.).
A classic example of a monopoly that arises due to the possession of a resource, such as a diamond
company.
The power of a government created monopoly over the market depends on the existence of close

Thus, the classical problem of maximizing profit is transformed into the problem of maximizing
profit, taking into account the expected actions of competitors.
The subject s behavior in a situation where a decision on further action presupposes possible
retaliatory actions by other market entities is called strategic behavior. Such behavior is studying the
theory of games (game theory). This branch of mathematics is designed for analysis of equilibrium
and possible strategies for the participants in the game situations, that means when the decision of one
party affect the position of others. Game theory helps us understand oligopoly and other situations
where players interact and behave strategically.
The simplest case the game is a game between two players with two possible outcomes and
simultaneous moves, called prisoner s dilemma .
The essence of the game is as follows: Police caught two criminals accused of committing a crime,
and conducts the questioning of each of them in different rooms. Criminals do not have the ability to
communicate. The police want to be recognized for each of the perpetrators of a crime. Each of the
criminals has two options indications: to confess to a crime or not to confess.

If both do not admit of the criminal, the fully blocked fault is difficult to prove and each receives

Comparing The Pardoner s Tale And The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales is a collection of short poems written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the fourteenth
century. Chaucer presented the tales as a series of stories various characters told in a story telling
contest during a pilgrimage to the Cathedral at Canterbury. The pilgrimage takes place in the month of
April; there are twenty nine travelers who seek the Shrine of St. Thomas Becket to offer homage and
penance. Chaucer wrote the poems in the native language and vernacular of the medieval period,
which lead to the tales being so widely known. Chaucer, the father of English literature, is so popular
because his writing style influences many great English poets. In The Canterbury Tales, The Pardoner
s Tale and The Reeve s Tale share many similarities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Pardoner s Tale and The Reeves Tale show examples of ways that jealousy can lead people to take
extreme actions to get ahead in life. The three bandits in The Pardoner s Tale are jealous of one
another; therefore, they plot to kill one another in order to become rich. They are so amused by being
richer than one another that, rather than splitting the gold three ways, they want to eliminate one
another from the division of treasure. They each receive the treatment they deserve because of their
evil thoughts and actions: death. Similarly, the Reeve, shows the repercussions of jealousy. The miller
steals grain in order to increase his social status because he is jealous of wealthy people around him.
Eventually his actions aggravate two students to the point that they beat him up, have sex with his
wife and daughter, and take their grain back. The two tales are in tandem by showing the negative

Explaining the Decline of Business in 2007
At the onset of this project we came up with the claim that I could use the logarithmic and/or natural
log to explain the decline in business. The way in which this is to be accomplished is by taking all the
sales figures from a 31 day period in 2007. We would then take another month with the same 31 day
period and take those figures. After graphing and comparing the two we postulate that the graphs
would show the direct decline graphically of what we will explain in this paper. After graphing the
figures we saw that the mathematical model that we had previously used would not be adequate with
the explanation. So we then did another 31 day comparative between a 31 day period in 2007. Then
again in 2013. These figures were then compared to the national average for hotels for the same
period. The interesting fact that came about was the direct correlation between the falls in sales figures
both nationally and here in south Florida and the corresponding securitization and real estate bubble
burst. What we will do in the following pages is explain what led up to the bubble burst as well as
some of the mathematical approaches in explaining the bursts. Every economic bubble in history
started with reckless expansion of money supply and credit, reckless manipulation of interest rates, or
government promotions of low risk something for nothing schemes. We saw this happen during the
Reagan administration with the low interest rates given. Hence the new popular movie Wolf on Wall

potential negative effects that it could have on someone striving towards academic success, they

First ADHD must be defined before coping methods can be explained. ADHD or Attention Deficit

Of those stimulant medications, the most common are Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, Adderall XR,
Concerta, Vyvanse, and Focalin XR (Jaksa, 1998). For those who do not like stimulant medications or
the idea of seeing a psychiatrist on a regular basis, there are alternate forms of treatment for dealing
with the effects of ADHD. Yoga, Vitamins, Herbal Supplements, and even special diets have been
proven to be successfully in helping an individual deal with the effects of ADHD (Mayo Clinic Staff,
2013). One could gain a lot from using these alternate forms of treatment if they want to take natural
approach to treatment. They would not have to worry about the potential negative side effects of
stimulant medications. They can also become addictive. However, this can also be risky. These
alternate forms of treatment cannot replace the expertise and knowledge of a licensed psychiatrist.
Working with someone who is certified to diagnose and treat this condition can provide access to
some of the best treatment possible. ADHD is associated with poor grades, poor reading and
mathematics standardized test scores, and an increased likelihood of repeating a school year (Daley

over into adulthood and create similar challenges as an adult learner. Individuals with ADHD face
academic disadvantages. This is not saying that an individual with ADHD cannot be the top student in

Pensive Bodhisattva And Korean Buddhist Art
Pensive Bodhisattva and Korean Buddhist Art Our lives are closely connected with an art. People
easily regard an artwork as something that is far from our lives, but it is always around us. Now, I
would like to introduce one of Buddhist artworks of Korea. The title is Pensive Bodhisattva. The artist
is unknown. However, it was made in mid 7th century during the Three Kingdom Period. The
dimension of this artwork is 8 7/8 inch and the medium is gilt bronze. It is located in Gallery 233
among other Korean artworks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art now. Pensive Bodhisattva has
typical features of the Buddhist artworks. Also, the interesting aspect is we can see the unique features
of the Three Kingdom Period s artwork through this sculpture. When we see this sculpture at first, the
most noticeable point is the bodhisattva s posture. He sits on the dais and he puts his right leg over his
left leg. The right leg also props his right elbow and his fingers especially the forefinger and the
middle finger touch his right chin and he rests his left hand neatly on his right ankle. The description
of his fingers and toes are very realistic. When we see the fingers and toes, we can feel how the artist
put his or her blood into sculpting each fingers and toes. However, his posture seems agonizing. When
we take a closer look his face, his eyes are closed and he puts gentle smile on his lips. For that reason,
his posture reminds us his anguish, but at the same time, his facial expression

Prime Minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. His legacy, attitude, and work transformed Canada and still
continues to do so. Trudeau was the Prime Minister of Canada, from 1968 to 1979 and from 1980 to
1984. Pierre Trudeau changed Canada s social political ideology. Canada is now known to be a
diverse, multicultural, bilingual and inclusive nation largely as result of his work. Pierre Elliott
Trudeau also believed in an equal Canada for all, he is primarily the one to introduce rights and
freedoms to the citizens of Canada. While some view Pierre Trudeau as impulsive, for enforcing the

Trudeau s approach to the situation provided Canadians security and safety. During Trudeau s time in
office, Quebec separatism was becoming an alarming issue. A terrorist organization, Front de
Liberation du Quebec (FLQ), was formed in an effort to separate Quebec from the rest of Canada. The
extremist brought havoc to Quebec and demanded separation from the Anglo (English speaking). On
October 5, 1970, the FLQ kidnapped British trade commissioner James Cross. They demanded the
release of FLQ members, the payment of $500,000, the publication of the FLQ manifesto and an
airplane ticket to either Cuba or Algeria. After, the FLQ went on to kidnap Quebec Cabinet Minister of
Labour and Immigration, Pierre Laporte, on October 10, 1970. In retaliation and for the security of the
people, Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act. The War Measures Act, called in military personnel in
Quebec to restore order, provide security and to help bring an end to the FLQ. With these
circumstance the War Measures Act was appropriate action taken, as it brings security to the people of
Quebec. Furthermore, it is key to remember the FLQ was a terrorist organization and it was important
that Trudeau eliminate the threat they posed to Canadians. Ricci writes in his novel Pierre Elliott

Preliminary Ruling Procedures
Enforcing the European Union legal system is diverse and done on multiple platforms; through not
only actions taken against member states for breach of their obligations, but also, for example, through
the use of direct effect1. Article 267 TFEU; an organism devised to practice private enforcement of
EU law before national courts, has been critical to ensure uniform interpretation and application of EU
law in member states. References for preliminary rulings occur when the national courts are presented
with a question of EU law due to uncertainty of the provision. The national court will therefore make a
reference to the Court of Justice (COJ) to obtain a preliminary ruling on any point of EU law relevant
to the proceedings 2. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under Art. 267, only court or tribunal of a member state may initiate preliminary reference to the ECJ,
however through succeeding case law this has been expanded by allowing entities whose members
may not be judges, provided that those entities have the power to adjudicate disputes 12. This concept
of a court or tribunal has been interpreted widely as it is a matter of union law13. The Advocate
General in De Coster14 criticised the court s approach and criteria to the interpretation as he deemed it
confusing. The court in this instance accepted the reference, as it was a permanent body established in
law, that it gives legal rulings and that the jurisdiction is compulsory 15. The court in further cases has
treated tribunals as not only tax appeal like in the case above but also; customs, social security and
immigration.
Despite the president of the ECJ optimism concerning caseload, there are still many issues present.
For example, the commission celebrates reducing the average duration of proceedings, however fails
to note the employment of 10 judges. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of cases since the
first referral in 1961, increasing from 1 to 38516. This is the highest level in the history of the ECJ.

Object Relations Theory. Object Relations Theory is the relation between the internalized sense of self

Object relations theorist says past memories, relationships, and images of events can effect an
individuals present functioning (Butman, Jones, 2011, 140). Internal objects are the most important
because they influence the individuals self, relationships they engage in, and the attachment these
individuals form within those relationships (Murdock, 2013, 83). These internal objects determine
how we relate to people (Butman, Jones, 2011, 141). Internalized objects also represent how
individuals view themselves (Butman, Jones, 2011, 141). When an individual is nurtured and
protected, they are more likely to develop a whole view of themselves (Butman, Jones, 2011, 141). On
the contrary, individuals who do not feel protected and loved tending to get stuck in the relationship
where their needs were not met (Butman, Jones, 2011, 144). This leads the individual to view other
relationships immaturely and consistently seek to meet primitive needs (Butman, Jones, 2011, 144).
Melanie did not form the appropriate attachments with either parent due to her mothers chronic drug

To His Coy Mistress Rhyme Scheme
In Andrew Marvell s poem, To His Coy Mistress , the speaker argues that if he and the woman he is
addressing had an infinite amount of time together, there would be no rush to be together. However,
since they are not immortal and only human, they cannot be together forever and only have what is
offered to them: the present moment. The speaker tries to convince the woman to seize the day and to
indulge in the physical aspect of their relationship before marriage. Marvell s argument is that instead
of categorizing our lives based on and fretting about what should be done in the present versus what
should be done in the future, people should cherish every moment as it comes. In order to convey this
theme, Marvell utilizes a nonuniform scheme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using this irregularity and not using a rigid pattern throughout the poem, Marvell cleverly throws
the reader off to the uneven distribution of syllables in order and their attention is given to the
substance of those lines. For instance, there are pauses within the first two lines that separates, and
thereby throws off, the tetrameter. The third line (twelve syllables) contains no pauses and continues
into the fourth line (eight syllables), reason being that this rhythm contrasts the rhythm of the couplet,
where the two lines possess ten syllables

Corruption In Famous Last Word Essay
War is a horrific experience made worse by those who try to control it for their own advantage. In
Famous Last Words, Timothy Findley creates a world of intrigue as he describes the tales of
conspiracy and corruption for world domination. That made World War II far worse than it otherwise

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor are prominent people in society, who want more power. The

Diet And Exercise Of Living A Healthy Life
Jessica Gourneau
Professor Vanderlinde
English 101
8 November 2015
Diet and Exercise Many people struggle with living a healthy life or struggle to know what exactly a
healthy life means. Having good diet and exercise habits are an important part of living a healthy life.
Just because someone may look fit and healthy, does not mean they are healthy. In fact, they could be
just as unhealthy as an obsess person. This is also the same for someone who may not look like they
are healthy. Even if they are overweight, they can still have a clean diet and a healthy heart. The only
true way to determine if someone is living a healthy life and eating properly along with getting the
right amount of exercise is by taking a closer look at their activity level and diet. The foundation to
staying healthy is having a good meal plan. There are many different factors to consider when
customizing a meal plan for someone. Their age, existing health issues, and the amount of activity are
some of the main factors. For example, a younger person who is physical active will not have to limit
their diet as much as someone who is older and is not physical active. The average person should aim
for 6 11 servings of grains, 3 5 of fruits and vegetables, 2 3 of dairy and meat, and also limit the
amount of sugar and fats. This is a good base for someone to start off with until a meal plan can be
written specifically for them. Even though diet is the most important part of living a healthy

Comparing Rowlandson And Incidents In The Life Of A Slave...
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary
Rowlandson are both nonfiction narratives that describe the struggles of women in some form of
captivity. The similarities between these two texts are in some ways incredibly obvious, for instance
they are both written in the first person from the perspective of marginalized women struggling to
merely survive. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl specifically deals with the extreme level of sexual
abuse that female slaves were subjected to and it is frequently cited as first hand proof that women
were treated even worse than men on plantations. While this may be true it is not a similarity that it
has to A Narrative of the Captivity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl offers many insights into the suffering that life can
sometimes offer. Her account does not have the same subtle optimism found in A Narrative of the
Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson , however, it similarly shows how many can take
their luxurious lifestyles for granted, by outlining the suffering or even discussing a woman who was
happy her child was dying and would be removed from a life of pain (23). Both of these texts clearly
outline how resilient human nature can be they both tell the stories of women who are put into
incredibly challenging situations and yet they both continue to survive. This survival mechanism of
humans is an intriguing recurring theme in both texts and is a similarity that links them both together.
While there are a myriad of similarities between these two texts, there are also significant differences
in context, theme, and scope. For instance, A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary
Rowlandson is the story of only eleven weeks of captivity. This is naturally a far less comprehensive
experience than in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl which tells the narrative of a girl who suffered
her entire life. Naturally, reading both of these texts shows a shocking difference in narrative view. A
Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson is quite optimistic, as one reads
through her account it is clear

Pericles, Philip II Of Macedonia, And Alexander The Great
Between 461 BC and 323 BC, Pericles, Philip II of Macedonia, and Alexander the Great shaped Greek
history by progressing military, strength, and power. Flourishing the Golden Age, motivating the
Athenian soldiers in the Peloponnesian War, and using outstanding strategies and tactics made Pericles
one of the men who significantly shaped Greek history. Secondly, Philip II remodeled the military
phalanx, creating a stronger military, transformed all of the small impoverished towns into well run
states, and subjugated the Greek city states, joining them together. After Philip II, Alexander the Great
destroyed Thebes to save his empire, united Macedonia into one powerful state, and unintentionally
started the Hellenistic Period, shaping Greece into a strong and united civilization and continuing the
Greek influence. Pericles, Cleisthenes, and Alexander the Great substantially shaped Greek history by
creating a strong military, gathering power and building controlled strength. Between 449 BC and 431
BC, the Golden Age of Athens flourished mainly under the rule of Pericles. Pericles funded the
cultural projects in Athens, including building new city landmarks like Parthenon and the Acropolis.
He also influenced writers, promoting literature, arts, and writing. A center of numerous fine arts
including education and democracy grew because of the willpower of Pericles. He came from a
wealthy and prestigious family that improved his education. This pushed him to advance philosophy

Dog Psychological Disorders
We all love our fuzzy babies but, who would have thought dogs do have psychological issues just like
humans do. Have you ever thought about it? When you hear about a dog attacking a kid or adult have
you asked yourself what makes them snap or was there something psychologically wrong with the
dog? In this compare and contrast essay I am going to compare and contrast the differences and
similarities between common human and dog psychological disorders. Dogs struggle with
psychological disorders too, humans are not alone.
Canine Compulsive Disorder or CCD is like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (ODC) in humans.
Obviously dogs can not obsessively shower or wash them selves like humans do but they can
continuously lick themselves. Dogs repeat a certain behavior or action such as, obsessive licking or
tail ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A cause of this could be that the dog had a bad experience with something in the past. Seeing an object
that reminds them of this can cause them to be stressed out or make them upset. One way to cure this
is to tackle this fear or phobia head on. For example, have the dog look at it and be in the same area as
the object for a certain time period. This will help the dog overcome the fear (Asher. C, 2017). You
could compare this to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD in humans. Veterans get this when they
come home from war, they experience similar feelings as the dogs do but in humans this is treated
with a lot of therapy and medication (H, 2017).
As you can see dogs and humans have similar psychological disorders and they are all treated in a
different way. Often dogs are used to help humans overcome certain disorders or as a comfort to help
with the disorder. Humans are not alone and dogs often struggle with the same disorders that humans
do. Who would have thought that dogs go through similar psychological disorders that humans do. So,
I guess the saying a mans best friend really is true a dog is a mans best

Patho-Physiology Of Asthma Essay
There are several patho physiologies of asthma. The mechanism by which asthma occurs is caused by
inflammatory cell infiltration, inflammatory mediators, bronchoconstriction, airway edema, airway
hyper responsiveness, airway remodeling, airway inflammation, the occurrence of persistent changes
in airway structure, gene by environment interactions, atopy or the genetic predisposition for the
development of immunoglobin E (IgE) mediated response to common aeroallergens, sex, and
environmental factors. Bronchoconstriction is airway narrowing and a subsequent interference with
airflow. During bronchoconstriction, bronchial smooth muscle contraction occurs quickly to narrow
the airways after being exposed to a variety of stimuli including allergens ... Show more content on

As asthma becomes more persistent and inflammation progresses, other factors further limit airflow.
These include mucus hypersecretion, inflammation, edema, and the formation of mucus plugs. Airway
hyper responsiveness, which is an exaggerated bronchoconstrictor response to a wide variety of
stimuli is a major but not unique feature of asthma. The mechanisms influencing airway hyper
responsiveness are multiple and include inflammation, structural changes, and dysfunctional
neuroregulation. Inflammation appears to be a major factor in determining the degree of airway hyper
responsiveness. This bronchial hyper responsiveness occurs after bronchoprovocation by
methacholine, histamine, cold air, exercise, viral upper respiratory infection, cigarette smoke and
respiratory allergens. Bronchial provocation with allergen induces a prompt early phase
immunoglobin E (IgE) mediated decrease in bronchial airflow followed in many patients by a late
phase IgE mediated reaction with a decrease in bronchial airflow for 4 8 hours. The gross pathology of
asthmatic airways displays smooth muscle hypertrophy, lung hyperinflation, mucosal edema, lamina
reticularis thickening, epithelial cell sloughing, mucus gland hypersecretion,

The Classical Expected Utility Theory And The Dual Theory...
INTRODUCTION:
Identifying, defining risks (market risks as well as non market risks), presenting and justifying a
unified framework for the analysis, construction and implementation of risk measures are important
components of insurance pricing.
According to the Oxford s advanced learners dictionary, risk can be defined as the possibility that
something uncertain (not predictable) and unpleasant will happen. Both financial and insurance
organisations are therefore faced with this concept of risk in their everyday activities. Financial risk
can be said to be the possibility that the return achieved on an investment will be different from that
expected, and also takes into account the size of the difference. Whereas insurers will define risk as a
chance of harm, damage or loss against something which is insured.
Several literatures reveal a good number of different approaches and theories to the price of risk. The
two main competing economic theories we shall consider are the classical expected utility theory, and
the dual theory of risk which was developed by Yaari(1987).
They defined the price of an insurance risk excluding other expenses as the risk adjusted premium.
The rest of this paper is structured as follows: section 2 presents the class of distortion operators used
in insurance pricing, their properties and an application of pricing by distortion. Section 3 incorporates
a new pricing principle by Wang (2002) and its relevance to natural hedging.
Section 4

know about gender portrayal in the media. To begin, it was not until this film that I noticed the
imposing gender ideologies happening in the media. For instance, the film discusses how hands are

male hands are in control in their pictures, often having

and foremost, a timeless classic should be influential and be able to change lives. An everlasting book
requires to change one s perspective on how they think and live everyday. Another essential criteria is
to have a thesis that is relatable to others. It is a necessity to understand and learn from the theme of

killing a Mockingbird would not be a sin if it never occurred. Moreover, the quote reveals that there is

Literary Explication Of Acquainted With The Night
Literary Explication of Acquainted with The Night In the poem Acquainted with The Night by Robert
Frost, the speaker of the poem has walked around at night a lot in his life. He has walked away and
back to somewhere in the rain. He has walked in the city and beyond, perhaps out of the city. He has
been down the lonely dark streets. He walks by a watchman, but did not look because he did not want
to have to give an explanation of what he was doing there. He has stopped to listen to a voice calling
out from another street, hoping that is was someone that was looking for him. The speaker looks up at
a luminary clock , which is the moon, but was not very satisfied with the time that it has shown. He
ends up referring to the first line of the poem, he has been acquainted with the night. Robert Frost uses
symbolism, setting, and the speaker himself to tell the story of the man who has been acquainted with
the night. The first literary element used in Acquainted with The Night is symbolism. Darkness and
light are used in the poem, more being the lack of light. The poem could be seen as a metaphor of
depression and loneliness. Even though it is night time, the moon still reaches the streets, a symbol of

NHS Risk Management Case Study
1. Risk Management and why this is required for the National Health Service (NHS)
Risk management is essential in any industry as it is not always possible to predict the future.
However, by carrying out certain procedures and taking precautions, a more favourable outcome can
result over a less attractive one (Garlick, 2007, p.3). This is greatly beneficial for the publicly funded
National Health Service (NHS) as it assists the organisation comply with the the Standard for Better
Health for England and the Healthcare Standards for Wales. The National Patient Safety Agency
(2006) states that understanding all potential risks will aid the organisation in coping with unexpected
events and ultimately ensure public, staff and patient confidence ... Show more content on

In Hospital acquired infection: the challenges of the law of negligence , Rachel Hanly states, a utopian
aspiration for the health system is that all dangers to patients can be eradicated, but realism entails that
the maximum should be done, by the providers and users, to curtail any threats to the safety of
vulnerable patients . The hospital must maintain a controlled safety environment as it must be aware
of any risks which are present at any other place, aside from a home (Wilkinson, 2003, p.87). The
National Audit Office (2000) states that infections acquired in hospitals in the United Kingdom
ultimately cost around £1bn a year, affecting almost 10% of patients and causing over 5000 deaths a
year and so the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) was started in 2001 to focus solely on patient
safety issues. The Handwashing Liaison Group recommended washing hands with soap and water
when there is soiling and that staff should use an alcohol glycerol hand rub between interactions with
patients. This shows that the NHS has identified the steps which were highlighted in their risk
assessment (NHS: National Patient Safety Agency, 2006) and later the NPSA was created to assist the
NHS to meet its core values in terms of patient

Salbutamol
Bronchodilator Response of Nebulized Salbutamol versus Salbutamol and Ipratropium Bromide in
Adult Patients with Acute Severe Asthma
Introduction:
Acute severe asthma previously called status asthmaticus is a life threatening medical condition
characterized by bouts of repeated and worsening cough, wheezing, chest recession and inability to
speak or drink that may result in acute respiratory failure and even death.1 These patients are also at
risk for developing serious complications like aspiration pneumonia, pneumo mediastinum,
pneumothorax and hypoxic brain injury etc. 1Inhaled high dose short acting β2 agonists like
salbutamol along with systemic steroids and supplemental oxygen are considered as first line
treatment in all patients who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rationale:
Although there are local studies on various aspects of asthma, there is no local study in Pakistan
published so far which compares the response of nebulised salbutamol alone with combination of
ipratropium bromide in adult population with acute severe asthma. This study has been planned to
compare these two approaches. My study will help for better management of patients who report to
emergency department with this potentially life threatening

Evolution And Catastrophes
Patterns of Vertebrate Evolution and Catastrophes
Catastrophic events, such as mass extinctions, floods, earthquakes, disease, and more recently war, are
all events that have shaped vertebrate evolution through time. In prehistoric times, mass extinctions
have been caused by asteroid and meteor impacts, which can cause serious environmental damage by
ejecting dust and debris (Carpenter and Bishop, 2009). The stress from the impact could trigger
additional earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and would further eradicate living species from the globe
following the direct impact of an asteroid or meteor (Carpenter and Bishop, 2009). With recent
research in the Deccan plateau of India following the KPg extinction, the role of volcanism in mass ...

The phenology of vertebrates was greatly altered by the mass extinctions and catastrophes that have
occurred in history and still have an effect on vertebrates today. The main hypothesis for the global
climate change following mass extinctions, particularly the Cretaceous Paleogene (KPg), is black
carbon spread throughout the globe and altered solar radiation to create a system of global cooling
(Kaiho et al., 2016). The cooling of the Earth s temperature created a sudden drop in precipitation and
a 50 60% decrease in sunlight following the impact of the asteroid (Kaiho et al., 2016). Research
shows that following the impact of the KPg extinction precipitation has substantially decreased and
depends on the latitude (Kaiho 2016). The Late Ordovician mass extinction was the first of the Big
Five and can be clearly connected with climate change (Finnegan et al., 2012). The Late Ordovician
mass extinction can be explained by the climactic common cause hypothesis, which states that climate
cooling has a direct influence on extinction rates by forcing tropical taxa to live in climates that did
not match their niche (Finnegan et al., 2012). In a research study done on the effects of climate change
in the Late Ordovician, patterns of thermal tolerance range indicators show cooling and habitat loss as
an important driver

  • 2. Sacrifice In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row, Steinbeck focuses on traditional society but a society with different values. His society is the traditional society including class, the homeless, uneducated, but instead Steinbeck captures the humanity in the homeless, the bums, and prostitutes along with the uneducated. He uses friendship and sacrifice as their humanity scale in the novel. Steinbeck uses adventures in the novel for a way of explaining life on a broader scale. In a general idea, the main characters Mack and the boys are considered failures in society. It states, trussed up men scream at them and call them no gods, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of The Movie Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor Film Review A romantic classic, From Here to Eternity was released in 1953. The film was directed by Fred Zinnemann and produced by Columbia Pictures. From Here to Eternity is based on the days prior to Pearl Harbor and the day of in Hawaii. One of the main characters, Prewitt played by Montgomery Clift, was a private who was abused by the army for not joining the units boxing team, but choosing to play the bugle instead. Cold hearted Capt. Holmes was played by Philip Ober. He orders Prewitt to a many unnecessary tasks while his wife, Deborah Kerr, cheats on him with another Sargent, Burt Lancaster. From Here to Eternity is historically accurate since it coincides with the material from Richard Overy s Why the Allies Won and John Jefferies Wartime America. First, the film is historically accurate of the date in which the Japanese attacked U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. The entire film took place in Hawaii, USA and it portrayed the attack that occurred on December 7 Japanese aircraft attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor (Overy p.15) The films date was the same as the date reported in the Overy novel, making a direct factual connection of the event. Secondly Jefferies book and Fred Zinnemann s film both brought out the significance of marriage in America in 1941. The essential theme in the film is romance and finding someone to marry. • 4. Analysis Of Without Tahna I Cannot Sleep Essay 2 Final: Devotion to God I. Introduction The female saint, Mirabai, expressed her devotion to the deity Krishna through songs of love and longing. Mirabai s song, Without Krishna I Cannot Sleep, conveys this desire to be united with the Lord Krishna. A fifteenth century princess of Rajasthan, Mirabai entered into an advantageous marriage at a young age (Fisher 82). When her husband died, her in laws made their wishes clear that she was to sacrifice herself and throw herself onto his funeral pyre (Fisher and Bailey 82). Ignoring their wishes, Mirabai chose to forsake the luxuries of the palace life and become a wanderer, devoting her life to the deity Krishna (Fisher and Bailey 82). Mirabai s life and devotional practices serve as a model of the spiritual path of bhakti yoga. Initially considered mad, Mirabai brushed off any hostilities and danced with a blissful ecstasy in the streets (Fisher 105). She paid little heed to social conventions and described herself as, defiant of world censure or family shame (Fisher 105). Free from societal constraints, Mirabai sung devotions like, Without Krishna I Cannot Sleep, during her time as a wanderer around 1500 and 1550. As one of the more popular female saints within the bhakti tradition, Mirabai s songs still influence Hindu devotional practices today as an insight to realization outside of classic Sanskrit tradition (Fisher 105). Her songs in the vernacular attracted many common people, who were able to understand her realizations and share her love for the Lord Krishna (Fisher and Bailey 80). Her sainthood was also representative of an upheaval of the classic Sanskrit tradition, where brahman men were in control (Fisher and Baily 81). The bhakti tradition allowed anyone, no matter the class or gender, to become a saint (Fisher and Baily 81). Through the spiritual path of bhakti yoga, Mirabai was able to become a saint and influence Krishna devotees. II. Without Krishna I Cannot Sleep Mirabai threw herself into her devotion to Krishna wholeheartedly. Her songs attributed to the deity are filled with feelings love and tortured longing, as the saint expresses her need to be united with her one true love, the Lord Krishna (Mirabai 82). The Authority Of Religious Elites In The 1640s Witch Hunts The Authority of Religious Elites in the 1640s Witch Hunts The large scale witch hunts that occurred from 1638 to 1651 gathered momentum via major happenings in the political, societal, and religious domains developing at the time. Individuals who had either political, religious or economic power in society, also known as elites, together had absolute control over the pursuit and prosecution of individuals who partook in witchcraft. The clergy played a crucial role in the witchcraft prosecutions and were slower than the state and localities to desert their beliefs in the reality of witches as the prosecution of witchcraft was, in their eyes, an effective tool to eradicate social deviance. Though local authorities and the Parliament did contribute to the witch hunts significantly, without the kirk of Scotland declaring and encouraging this sanction on witchcraft, both other parties would not have taken the actions they ultimately did. This essay will provide a brief description of events that took place from 1638 to 1651 and then utilize evidence from a multitude of sources to argue that the religious elites were the most influential of these forces during the witchcraft prosecutions that occurred in the 1640s. The Role Of Class In The Gilded Age And Progressive Era Class To begin, class influenced the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in the changing working conditions as a response to industrialization. Class was also apparent in Gilded Age politics and in the changing political culture that foreshadowed the bureaucratic government of the Progressives. Middle Class Progressives played a vital role in America by seeking reform and influence among the upper and working class. Thus, class assumed a prominent role in influencing the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Changing Working Conditions In the 19th century, there were several structural changes in the nature of work. These changes included deskilling of jobs, which led to the decline of the heroic artisan and economic depressions. All these factors contributed to tense strikes between workers and employers. During the Antebellum period, most white American workers were self reliant, but the nature of work and production began to shift after the Civil War, as the industrial workplace increased in size, immigration swelled, and the number of wage workers surpassed that of self employed men. Thus, heroic artisans experienced threats with the emergence of a class of permanent wage workers, which killed their republic dreams for American economic self sufficiency, property ownership, and self employment. Nevertheless, the real challenge for white wage Americans began in the 1870s and 1880s, as xenophobic anxieties of Chinese workers emerged. [1] Additionally, the late 19th century was ... Many of the patients are at risk for falls due to neurological problems. There are at least two to three patients restrained on the unit on a daily basis. Some of the reasons nurses restrain patients are to prevent them from harming themselves or others, to help maintain treatment plans, and to control confused or agitated patients (Stratmann, Vinson, Magee and Hardin, 1997). The most frequently used restraints are vests, wrist, belts/ties, mitten and ankle, in that order (Stratmann et al., 1997). Many research studies currently taking place are focused towards discovering alternatives to restraints. Identifying successful alternatives to restraints and educating nurses about alternatives has helped in reducing the use of restraints (Winston, Morelli, Bramble, Friday and Sanders, 1999; Weeks, 1997). There are times, however, when restraints are needed to protect patients (Richman, 1998; Dibartolo, 1998). Restraints would be indicated for an intubated patient who keeps pulling out his endotracheal tube. In such cases, failing to use restraints could result in a claim or lawsuit being brought on for negligence (Richman, 1998). • 17. Explaining the Decline of Business in 2007 At the onset of this project we came up with the claim that I could use the logarithmic and/or natural log to explain the decline in business. The way in which this is to be accomplished is by taking all the sales figures from a 31 day period in 2007. We would then take another month with the same 31 day period and take those figures. After graphing and comparing the two we postulate that the graphs would show the direct decline graphically of what we will explain in this paper. After graphing the figures we saw that the mathematical model that we had previously used would not be adequate with the explanation. So we then did another 31 day comparative between a 31 day period in 2007. Then again in 2013. These figures were then compared to the national average for hotels for the same period. The interesting fact that came about was the direct correlation between the falls in sales figures both nationally and here in south Florida and the corresponding securitization and real estate bubble burst. This concept of a court or tribunal has been interpreted widely as it is a matter of union law13. The Advocate General in De Coster14 criticised the court s approach and criteria to the interpretation as he deemed it confusing. The court in this instance accepted the reference, as it was a permanent body established in law, that it gives legal rulings and that the jurisdiction is compulsory 15. The court in further cases has treated tribunals as not only tax appeal like in the case above but also; customs, social security and immigration. Despite the president of the ECJ optimism concerning caseload, there are still many issues present. For example, the commission celebrates reducing the average duration of proceedings, however fails to note the employment of 10 judges. Internal objects are the most important because they influence the individuals self, relationships they engage in, and the attachment these individuals form within those relationships (Murdock, 2013, 83). These internal objects determine how we relate to people (Butman, Jones, 2011, 141). Internalized objects also represent how individuals view themselves (Butman, Jones, 2011, 141). When an individual is nurtured and protected, they are more likely to develop a whole view of themselves (Butman, Jones, 2011, 141). The speaker tries to convince the woman to seize the day and to indulge in the physical aspect of their relationship before marriage. • 26. Diet And Exercise Of Living A Healthy Life Jessica Gourneau Professor Vanderlinde English 101 8 November 2015 Diet and Exercise Many people struggle with living a healthy life or struggle to know what exactly a healthy life means. Having good diet and exercise habits are an important part of living a healthy life. Just because someone may look fit and healthy, does not mean they are healthy. In fact, they could be just as unhealthy as an obsess person. This is also the same for someone who may not look like they are healthy. Even if they are overweight, they can still have a clean diet and a healthy heart. The only true way to determine if someone is living a healthy life and eating properly along with getting the right amount of exercise is by taking a closer look at their activity level and diet. The foundation to staying healthy is having a good meal plan. There are many different factors to consider when customizing a meal plan for someone. Their age, existing health issues, and the amount of activity are some of the main factors. For example, a younger person who is physical active will not have to limit their diet as much as someone who is older and is not physical active. The average person should aim for 6 11 servings of grains, 3 5 of fruits and vegetables, 2 3 of dairy and meat, and also limit the amount of sugar and fats. This is a good base for someone to start off with until a meal plan can be written specifically for them. Even though diet is the most important part of living a healthy ... Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson are both nonfiction narratives that describe the struggles of women in some form of captivity. The similarities between these two texts are in some ways incredibly obvious, for instance they are both written in the first person from the perspective of marginalized women struggling to merely survive. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl specifically deals with the extreme level of sexual abuse that female slaves were subjected to and it is frequently cited as first hand proof that women were treated even worse than men on plantations. Similarly, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl offers many insights into the suffering that life can sometimes offer. Her account does not have the same subtle optimism found in A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson , however, it similarly shows how many can take their luxurious lifestyles for granted, by outlining the suffering or even discussing a woman who was happy her child was dying and would be removed from a life of pain (23). Both of these texts clearly outline how resilient human nature can be they both tell the stories of women who are put into incredibly challenging situations and yet they both continue to survive. This survival mechanism of humans is an intriguing recurring theme in both texts and is a similarity that links them both together. While there are a myriad of similarities between these two texts, there are also significant differences in context, theme, and scope. For instance, A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson is the story of only eleven weeks of captivity. This is naturally a far less comprehensive experience than in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl which tells the narrative of a girl who suffered her entire life. For example, have the dog look at it and be in the same area as the object for a certain time period. This will help the dog overcome the fear (Asher. C, 2017). You could compare this to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD in humans. Veterans get this when they come home from war, they experience similar feelings as the dogs do but in humans this is treated with a lot of therapy and medication (H, 2017). The mechanisms influencing airway hyper responsiveness are multiple and include inflammation, structural changes, and dysfunctional neuroregulation. This bronchial hyper responsiveness occurs after bronchoprovocation by methacholine, histamine, cold air, exercise, viral upper respiratory infection, cigarette smoke and respiratory allergens. • 32. The Classical Expected Utility Theory And The Dual Theory... INTRODUCTION: Identifying, defining risks (market risks as well as non market risks), presenting and justifying a unified framework for the analysis, construction and implementation of risk measures are important components of insurance pricing. According to the Oxford s advanced learners dictionary, risk can be defined as the possibility that something uncertain (not predictable) and unpleasant will happen. Both financial and insurance organisations are therefore faced with this concept of risk in their everyday activities. Financial risk can be said to be the possibility that the return achieved on an investment will be different from that expected, and also takes into account the size of the difference. Whereas insurers will define risk as a chance of harm, damage or loss against something which is insured. Several literatures reveal a good number of different approaches and theories to the price of risk. The two main competing economic theories we shall consider are the classical expected utility theory, and the dual theory of risk which was developed by Yaari(1987). They defined the price of an insurance risk excluding other expenses as the risk adjusted premium. The stress from the impact could trigger additional earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and would further eradicate living species from the globe following the direct impact of an asteroid or meteor (Carpenter and Bishop, 2009). With recent research in the Deccan plateau of India following the KPg extinction, the role of volcanism in mass ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The phenology of vertebrates was greatly altered by the mass extinctions and catastrophes that have occurred in history and still have an effect on vertebrates today. The main hypothesis for the global climate change following mass extinctions, particularly the Cretaceous Paleogene (KPg), is black carbon spread throughout the globe and altered solar radiation to create a system of global cooling (Kaiho et al., 2016). The cooling of the Earth s temperature created a sudden drop in precipitation and a 50 60% decrease in sunlight following the impact of the asteroid (Kaiho et al., 2016). Research shows that following the impact of the KPg extinction precipitation has substantially decreased and depends on the latitude (Kaiho 2016). The Late Ordovician mass extinction was the first of the Big Five and can be clearly connected with climate change (Finnegan et al., 2012). The Late Ordovician mass extinction can be explained by the climactic common cause hypothesis, which states that climate cooling has a direct influence on extinction rates by forcing tropical taxa to live in climates that did not match their niche (Finnegan et al., 2012). In a research study done on the effects of climate change in the Late Ordovician, patterns of thermal tolerance range indicators show cooling and habitat loss as an important driver ...
