Book 15 Of The Iliad Essay
In the novel The Iliad, written by Homer, a variety of themes can be interpreted from the text. Book 15
of The Iliad contains a scene that involves Achilles risking his best friends life simply because he
incapable of letting go. Earlier, in book 6, Prince Paris experiences a moment of courage and
challenges King Menelaus over the hand of a woman named Helen. Again, Paris is caught in a violent
scene fighting to protect his self pride. In a period of cowardice Paris brother Hector discovers him
hiding from battle, and attacks his ego, forcing him to fight once again. Some may say The Iliad is
about honor, importance of war, or revenge, but one message that stands above the rest is the hunger
for superiority.
During book 16 of The Iliad the Achaeans are pushed dangerously close to the coast by the Trojan
army. It was at this time that Patroclus seeks the aid of his dear friend Achilles. Patroclus explains to
Achilles the carnage that surrounds him and begs his comrade to rejoin the fight. Achilles, still sore
over his disagreement with Agamemnon, refuses to fight. As a compromise Achilles offers his armor
to Patroclus ensuring his safety: Up now, Zeus born Patroclus, master of horsemen. Lo, I see by the
ships the rush of consuming fire. Let it not be that they take the ships and there be no more escaping!
Do on my armour with all haste, and I will gather the host (Book 16). This decision brings Patroclus to
his eminent doom on the battlefield. It s clear to see that

Examples Of Inhumanity In Tuesdays With Morrie
Where would the world be without humanity? Would it be laying in ruins because of needless wars
fought? Perhaps there would be a so called master race that exterminated any person that slightly
deviated from what was deemed perfect. Maybe there would be no more humans left at all. Humanity
binds the human race together. The caring for other people and not just thinking about yourself. The
word is humanity, and the root of that is human. This concept is central to all our beliefs. Just like a
coin though, there is a flip side. Inhumanity, when humans do not act like regular humans. To be
described as inhuman a person has to be extremely nefarious. These people that commit inhuman acts
upon others are treated as monsters, and by all rights are monsters. Both of the books we read this
semester dealt with humanity and inhumanity. Although one book clearly had a lot more inhumanity
in it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An old friend of the main character was dying. Morrie has ALS, it is a crippling disease that affects
the nervous system. Mitch is very upset about Morrie dieing. Morrie taught Mitch a lot about life and
humanity. Morrie taught Mitch how to feel, and hot to deal with emotions. Even though Morrie is
dying slowly and painfully, Morrie is staying positive. On one occasion Morrie tells Mitch that in the
mornings is when Morrie mourns. Morrie mourns the insidious disease and mourns what is lost. After
that Morrie cries if needed, and thinks about all the good things still left in life(Albom 57). This is
exactly how to balance inhumanity and humanity. People must always look at the good in every
situation. In Night the characters tried to stay positive just as Morrie is trying to. Morrie once said,
make peace with living (173). Morrie was content in dying and held no unrealistic beliefs. Mitch
believed it was wrong to take someone who had helped him so much away, but death is

Summary Of Pro-Women Labor Laws
Author states the subject matter of the article.
He then states the issue of the subject matter, mentioning that the women are the favored ones in labor
and social legislations. By stating that gender discrimination is in reverse and how women are
afforded too much protection, acts like a Checkhov s Gun since he then talks about it in the

The author then states his stand on the topic, his stand being there are too many pro women labor

The author opens up his completing layer by stating such Labor Code that benefits female employees.

Charles Dickens Stylistic Devices Essay
Course
Tutor
Date
Charles Dickens and the making of the modern age Charles Dickens has used various stylistic devices
in his literary works that he did between the year 1812 1870. He employed different styles just like
any other author to make his point out using changing styles in literature. Most of the imagery and
characters in his writings cannot be taken to be literal since they had some hidden meaning in them.
He employed the dramatic technique in his novels, which took a form of more of cinema than pure
theater like most of the literature works. There are a lot of dramatic picture scenes which ring into our
minds when we study his novels like the Fagin s den in the novel of Oliver Twist. These dramatic
pictures convey meanings in themselves in this literature. There is also a gradual change in the style
that Dickens employ in his works like changes in pronominal reference, elaboration, and
nominalisation. This paper analyses the different styles used by Dickens in his novels those before the
1850 and those after 1850.
Oliver Twist In the novel of Oliver Twist, Dickens employ a stylistic device that is considered to be
different to the stylistic device employed in other works by the same author. In this novel, he
employed a shifting narrative voice, which makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this time in which the novel is written, it was the time that England was undergoing an
economic instability in the country, which was accompanied by widespread unemployment. The
economic instability was brought about with the war that England had with France and the
government imposed heavy taxes on its citizens which were greatly felt among the poor. There was a
scarcity of food, which led to high prices of goods and many European markets for English goods
were closed that led to the condition that was being described in the

Bioengineer s Role In Oryx And Crake
Bioengineer and its role in Oryx and Crake Oryx and Crake is one of my favorite readings in the
semester. I like the flow and arrangement of the plots. The novel is an enthralling post apocalyptic
story with a detailed description of the science and technology it based on. The most important science
and technology involved in the novel is genetic or Bioengineering. The novel was written in late 20th
century and early 21st century, a time when many breakthroughs and controversial Bioengineering
incidents took place. Atwood is known as an avid environmentalist of the time. She was concerned
about the ethical controversial and the downplay of the humanities at the time and choose to use her
work to examine the trend in development and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novel, the two main characters grew up in a cosmetic focused Bioengineering company s
compound. The creation of a compound integrating different functions and providing different
services for a company is not such a novel idea today. Many internet tycoons like Google and
Microsoft have their own campuses which provide similar services and amenities to their employees
as the compounds described in the book. However, to emphasize the effect Bioengineering would
have on a society, Atwood took a step forward by making the compounds more secluded and
exaggerated the power and functionalities of them. The seclusion created by the Bioengineering
companies directly led to the divided social classes. People who were associated with companies
resided in the privileged compound and people who were not related to the company lived in the
dangerous Pleebland. It was a privileged but also an underprivileged to be in the compound in a way.
Unlike the charitable attributes of technology companies campuses today, the compounds in the book
were created to withhold the scientists and protect the Bioengineering secrets of the companies.
Jimmy s mother viewed it as a prison and Jimmy in the later chapters would try to use the word
freedom to persuade his mistress to elope with him to Pleebland. The corporate power enabled by
exclusive Bioengineering technology can be seen throughout the book. Bioengineering companies had
control over every aspect of the daily life for people live both inside and outside of the compounds.
Atwood warned the risks of having monopoly Bioengineering companies by making all the companies
in the book monopolies. This kind of monopoly enabled technological power to develop into political
power and eliminated the existence of any modern government structures. The overpowering of the
Bioengineering companies also leads to the complete lack of

The Case Of Ninth Circuit Court
Ninth Circuit Court holds that an employee has a reasonable expectation of privacy in their private
office, because it is locked and not shared with others. This reasonable expectation of privacy extends
to the contents of their office, including the employee s company computer, located therein. As a
result, the court held that the fourth amendment protects both the office and computer from
warrantless searches by the government unless it obtains valid consent from either the defendant or
one with common authority over the items searched, or proceeds on the authorization of one with
apparent authority to give such valid consent. In this case, the Ninth Circuit holds that the government
obtained valid consent from one with common authority over the items searched, when it received
such consent from the employee s employer. The employer had common authority over the employee
s office computer because it had a policy of, and regularly did, monitor employees computer usage of
company machines, a policy of which its employees were made aware. The court accordingly denied
defendant s motion to suppress evidence found by the government during its warrantless search of
defendant s office computer. As a result, pursuant to a plea agreement, defendant was convicted of the
receipt of obscene material based, in part, on evidence obtained during this search. The evidence
obtained during this search, and by the company earlier, showed that defendant had viewed and had
possession of

Loneliness Is Not Good For The Man
Of all the fantasies that human beings entertain, the idea that we can go it alone is the most absurd and
perhaps the most dangerous. We stand together or we fall apart. George Monbiot Did you know the
physical effects of loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day? Loneliness raises your
chance of death by 26%. While we known intuitively that loneliness is harmful, science is beginning
to show just how harmful. At the very beginning of the Bible, God declares, It is not good for the man
to be alone. And yet, in our western society we constantly seek after individualism. We think that
somehow we ll be able to achieve what we want on our own. The drive to go it alone is deeply rooted
in our culture and we re seeing the effects of what we ve sown. Mental illness is on the rise. One in
four women between 16 and 24 have harmed themselves, another 26% of these women are also
affected by anxiety, depression, phobias or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. While depression and
loneliness are at an all time high, we need leaders to rise up and blah blah blah In The Prince, the
world Machiavelli lays out for a leader is a lonely one. The better to be feared than loved principle is
an idea that stifles community and isolates a leader. The story of Esther, however, proposes a different
view of leadership, one in which community is of high value. While Esther s courage was certainly
heroic, it would not have been possible without the support of her community,

Christian Music Vs. Secular Music
While gazing at a statue of Isaac Watt in Westminster Abbey, the great English poet Victor Longfellow
once quipped, He only did better what no man has ever done well! Professor Edward B. Reed voiced a
similar opinion, In this great mass of poetry (hymnody) there is little that shows artistic excellence.
Both men were correct. In terms of artistic merit, Christian hymnody pales greatly in quality in
comparison to secular music. The reason for such a disparity is simple: the world s best composers,
musicians, and songwriters do not work for the church; they work in the secular music industry. How
then, do the local churches, especially smaller parishes, achieve excellence regarding music in liturgy?
In a word, they do not because they cannot. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, in order for the masses to accept it, contemporary forms of music must sound
contemporary to the modern ear. To achieve a high degree of authenticity, modern church music must
be played on modern instrumentation by musicians who possess specific experience and particular
knowledge and the appropriate training. The modern mission constituency is too sophisticated to
tolerate and accept watered down renditions of rock, country, folk, or blues music played on pipe
organs by classically trained pipe organists who noticeably misunderstand and disrespect the subtleties
inherent in 21st Century music. At best, they merely retool modern genres to suit and satisfy classical
palates.
J. S. Bach s B Minor Mass with its great chorale fugues, elaborately ornamented arias, and orchestral
accompaniment, may very well be the greatest chorale work ever composed; however, liturgical music
is ill conceived as a great art form. Accessibility is paramount and, at its finest, liturgical music
remains natural, unpretentious, and

Examples Of Josephus Problem
The next base the essay will explore is base 3 also known as ternary, this is the base that was used in
the original Josephus problem. By exploring this base and a few more bases, I will find a pattern and
derive an equation to solve Josephus problem with any number of people in any number base.
Josephus problem in base 3 is when each person kills the person who sits two seats away from him
and the following diagram will demonstrate how it happens, the numbers on the inside show the order
of the people that are gone which will make it easier to follow.

there are only 2 people and starts meaning he has to skip and therefore dies first and wins. Now we
know that , we can see from the table above the answer is correct however we have to do it once more
to find .
We can always consider position and we have to repeat the equation until getting to the required
number. This solution can be very frustrating as you must do the same thing over and over, however it
can be programmed very easily and save a lot of time.
This method is the third and the last method to solve the Josephus problem, it is the most useful
method as it works for all bases however it is the most complicated one. In order to compare between
this method and the other two methods, we first have to write the equation in base

1. United States government reflected the rise of nationalism on a nationalism based legal and rational
concepts of citizenship, and based on a common language and cultural traditions, rather than ethnic

2. It allowed Missouri to enter the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. It restored the
balance of a slave and free states in the Union to 15 a piece. It also created more tension between the
north and the south.

It s All in the Head:
A study of modern characterization through the works of Salinger and Woolf
During the twentieth century, many writers emerged including, J.D. Salinger and Virginia Woolf.
Virginia Woolf helped show that the novel didn t have to just be about the big and the grand, but also
the everyday. Salinger and Woolf s books often included intimate details from their lives. They
broadened the field of what was considered acceptable for writing. For example, in The New Dress , a
short story by Virginia Woolf, Mabel struggles with depression and bipolar disorder. Woolf also
struggled with depression and bipolar disorder throughout her life. In addition, Salinger used ... Show

In the works of Salinger and Woolf, the reader first notices that stream of consciousness does not
allow for the characters to keep secrets and reveals their hypocrisy as they behave differently than
their thoughts. Holden s hidden sides are revealed in when he talks about those who he cares about
such as when he talks about his dead brother: My brother Allie has this left handed fielder s mitt
(Salinger 38). Holden says I m the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life but shows that he
actually cares about people in his life such as Jane Gallagher and his siblings Allie and Phoebe
(Salinger 16). In Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, Peter Walsh, a former lover of Mrs Dalloway,
visits her and tries to seem detached but we see from inside his mind his true thoughts: But it was
Clarissa one remembered...Not that she was striking; not beautiful at all; there was nothing
picturesque about her; she never said anything especially clever; there she was, however; there she
was. No, no, no! He was not in love with her any more! (Dalloway 76). Peter has been unable to move
on from Clarissa and he tries to convince himself and others that he loves another woman, but he
cannot lie to himself and therefore we, the readers, see the truth. Stream of consciousness is also used
for characterization of individuals because the characters are transparent. An example

Construct Validity Research
The above examples provide evidence that a personality measurement can be examined through its
reliability. A good personality test should have the same findings in different occasions (i.e. test retest
reliability) and also all of the items in the test should be measuring the same thing (i.e. internal
consistency). Nevertheless, personality measurement can be evaluated by its validity as well.
Construct validity is one of the main subtypes of validity. Construct validity refers to the ability that a
personality test measures what it is intended to measure. Discriminant validity is a subtype of
construct validity, which refers to the extent that the concept that is not related to the test doesn t
emerge in the test. Soto, C. J., John, O. P. (2009) tested the discriminant validity by comparing the BFI
with the NEO PI R. They showed that the correlation between the BFI and NEO PI R facet scales has
high discriminant validity. Each BFI facet scales correlated most with the corresponding NEO PI R
facet scales than with the other NEO PI R facet. This research demonstrated that BFI is discriminant
valid because it only correlates most with the corresponding items on the NEO PI R. Furthermore,

Summary Of Jhumpa Lahiri s The Namesake
The first sentence of a novel, even a chapter, needs to leave a first impression. Jhumpa Lahiri in her
novel The Namesake wields the first sentence in each of her chapters, so they build through her book
in a far more significant way than just a first impression. Lahiri uses the first sentence of every chapter
to further the plot development by clearly setting new scenes to transition to the new setting and sub
purpose of the next chapter. To successfully set her scenes, she uses varying Syntax and rhetorical
tools including imagery, short syntax with a focus, and grammatical mistakes. Of the different ways
Lahiri sets her scenes, the first sentences that provide the most context are the ones that employ
imagery and have a long syntax structure. Lahiri takes advantage of these sentences when the book is
currently in a place with minimal conflict and the mood of the book is new and very different from
what it was previously. The main goal is to develop what is currently a clean slate. The cleanest slate
being the first chapter, which starts on a sticky August evening two weeks before her due date, Ashima
Ganguli stands in the kitchen of a Central Square apartment, combining Rice Krispies and Planters
peanuts and chopped red onion in a bowl (Lahiri 1). This sentence provides a who, what, when,
where, and how, which covers almost all the basic context. The reader can now understand the scene,
so the author could start describing actions going on in the scene. Another clean slate in The
Namesake is the chapter after Gogol and Monshumi s wedding, and they attend a dinner party. Lahiri
ends that section and it shifts to their anniversary; On the morning of their first anniversary,
Monshumi s parents call, waking them, wishing them a happy anniversary before they ve had the
chance to say it to each other (246). This sentence provides a who, what, when, where, and why,
which sets a completely new scene. The long syntax allows for Lahiri to provide all this information,
so the reader can start picturing the scene. In turn, this strategy creates a very solid transition to a
completely different place and point of view to focus on. On the other hand, Lahiri uses short syntax
with a very particular focus to start

Kids Essay
Today teenagers wear different styles of clothing to express their personality. All high school students
subject themselves to this wild time in their life. Many kids want to fit in with a click or gang, or just
want to change friends. A teens unique character and individual style of dress sets them apart from all
other kids.
The Prep clique contains the students that everybody s parents love. They show off expensive clothes,
the type of clothes that a polo player wears. This consists of the striped Ralph Lauren shirt with the
classic beige khaki pants. For decoration, they put on the big gold rings and the intelligent looking
glasses. To top it all off they model patterned socks with brown shoes and they ... Show more content

They put on triple extra large shirts made by Fubu or of their favorite rap artist. Wiggers wear the
twenty sizes, too big pants that sag down to their knees. Wiggers walk around with a fake limp to
symbolize a bullet wound to the leg. They wear big thick gold chains like Mr. T with huge dollar sign
emblem to represent the money. This gang of kids also uses foul, vulgar language that they pick up
from rappers dirty mouths.
Consider the jocks every teacher likes them because they play for the school team. They get away with
practically murder; the teachers seem to just look the other way. The jocks cocky and arrogant attitude
make them not well like around the school. They all wear the same type of haircuts, the crew cut or
the ever so popular shaved head. Jocks wear the tight white, Hanes tee shirts and Levi blue jeans to
make them look huge. Jocks tend to pick on little kids, because it makes them feel all big and
powerful. They shove freshmen into lockers and just act like immature jackass. They only hang out
with their jock friends because other groups of people dislike them.
Gothic kids tend to clear the halls, when they walk down them; everyone tends to stay out of their
way. They dress in black clothes head to toe and black Doc Martins; the girls usually put on black, fish
net stockings. Girls and guys alike paint their faces white, their nails black, and put on black eyeliner.

The Performance And Reward Management System
Performance ratings is part of the performance and reward management system that used to support
organisations personnel decisions in performance appraisal, promotion, compensation, and employee
development (Yun, Donahus, Dudley, McFarland, 2005). Accurate performance ratings are
fundamental to the success or failure of the performance management process, therefore, raters have
been suggested to be fully trained to minimise potential errors in performance ratings (Biron,
Farndale, Paauwe, 2011). Several rater training programs have been developed to enhance the quality
of performance ratings, such as rater error training and frame of reference training (MacDonald
Sulsky, 2009). Nevertheless, not all rater training programs have been equally successful, many
researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of frame of reference training in increasing rating
accuracy (Woehr, 1994; Keown Gerrard Sulsky, 2001; Roch, Woehr, Mishra, Kieszczynska, 2012).
The following will assess the effectiveness of frame of reference training in increasing rating quality
through comprehensive examination of its validity, accuracy and reliability.
Explanation for Frame of Reference Training
Early approaches to rater training were focused mainly on reducing raters common errors,
(MacDonald Sulsky, 2009). However, rater error training has been proven ineffective in actual
application. Researchers have found that rater error training may teach raters to use inappropriate

Nonetheless, there are some major concerns with this. The main problem is that most of the modern
phones are manufactured so that it is virtually impossible for the user to service the phone on their
own. Most smartphone screens are attached to the phone as a single unit and therefore, you cannot just
repair or replace one without affecting the other. But if you are technically gifted and have experience
handling similar phones yourself, you may want to repair the device yourself. You can buy dedicated
smartphone screen repair kits for various applications instead of putting your device away. However,
Do It Yourself repairs are a major cause of many dead smartphones, so it pays off to entrust the job to

The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs....
The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson reveals that the ghastly
depiction of the Indian religion (or what Rowlandson perceives as a lack of religion) in the narrative is
directly related to the ideologies of her Puritan upbringing. Furthermore, Rowlandson s experiences in
captivity and encounter with the new, or Other religion of the Indians cause her rethink, and question
her past; her experiences do not however cause her to redirect her life or change her ideals in any way.
The function of religion plays a significant role in the narrative, especially the dissimilarities between
the narrator s religious beliefs and the Other religion of her captors. More specifically the Puritan
ideology of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is clear that Mary Rowlandson s encounter with the Other causes her to doubt her past, specifically
her devotion to God. At the end of the narrative Rowlandson confirms this claim with the remark:
When I lived in prosperity; having the comforts of this World about me, my Relations by me, and my
heart cheerful: and taking little care for any thing; and yet seeing many (whom I preferred before
myself) under many trials and afflictions, in sickness, weakness, poverty, losses, crosses, and cares of
the Worlds, I should be sometimes jealous least I should have my portion in this life but now I see
the Lord had his time to scourge and chasten me (50). The evidence from the narrative in many ways
could characterize this work as a text in which the narrator (Mary Rowlandson) realizes her mistakes
in the past and redirects her life accordingly. This is not true in the case of Rowlandson, to be more
specific her experiences and interaction with the Indians do not challenge her Puritan ideologies, but
rather confirms and strengthens them. When the narrator returns to her former lifestyle she in no way
demonstrates any new knowledge from her experience, but rather returns home with the same degree
of ignorance that she had before her captivity. Rowlandson also contradicts herself in

Junzheng My Grandmother
To many people, mentioning WWII brings up the war in Europe and the Holocaust. However, there
was another side to the story. The Japanese invaded China as early as 1931, and over the next decade
quickly spread throughout China under their imperialist and militarist conquest. Li Junzheng, my
grandmother, lived through Japanese invasion.
Li Junzheng was born in June, 1938. She lived in a rural village in China called Yuyao, a few hours
outside of Shanghai, which was a bustling city already. At the time, China was going through the
Second Sino Japanese War. By large, the fighting hadn t reached Junzheng s rural village, but the
country was in turmoil. China was a very young country after the end of dynastic rule in 1912, and
different political factions and warlords fought for power. The common people lived in poverty for the
most part. When Junzheng was just three years old, in 1941, the Japanese invaded the area near her
village. To escape being beaten, tortured, or killed, Junzheng s family fled into the mountains that
surrounded her rural town. She recalled that, Everyone fled into the mountains. Some people led their
cows up with them, and even the cows were terrified. The mountains were steep and people were
afraid of falling. Junzheng s mother and two older sisters were the ones who carried her into the
mountains, because she was only three. The panic and hysteria of the fleeing villagers meant that they
were running for their lives, and were trying to leave as fast

How My Group Members And I Worked Together
This final paper will explain how my group members and I worked together. This ties into the final
project for this class. My paper will show how I related to all the myths within a culture and tie them
to the real world. Below I will explain how everything turned out and how we came up with out topic
for the final project. I think as of now the level of engagement my partners have participated in is very
low. We decided we wanted to focus on the Greek culture on April twenty fourth. I contacted them and
asked how we wanted to split the work up or even start and I had no responses. Finally at nine on
Saturday night one of my group members messaged a link to Google Documents, with only one slide
started. I started working on the Google PowerPoint at eleven at night and woke up this morning to
see nothing had been added. I went back on around eleven this morning and added new work. A little
update to this situation it is now six, nothing has been added, but my work and I have had zero contact
with my group. So I will say my group had little engagement in this project, one member did make the
Google document, but nothing has been started. I think I learned a lot about my teamwork skills. I am
such a perfectionist and like to get things done early. Working with a group makes it challenging,
because people had different time schedules. I think I learned that I am someone who engages with a
project more often than my group, because I want to get my work done. My goal for this

Symptoms And Treatment Of Ptsd Veterans
It is evident that reforms are necessary within the VA system and society in regards to PTSD and
veterans. How can the American veterans be better taken care of? I will focus on the following four
specific issues that are in need of reform,
1. How can wait times be decreased for veterans seeking mental health treatment?
2. How can the stigma attached to PTSD in veterans be eliminated?
3. How can veterans receive immediate assistance in times of crisis?
4. How can we ensure that diagnosed PTSD veterans will continue treatment after receiving full
monetary compensation?
Focusing on these research questions, I propose to conduct research on decreasing wait times for
PTSD related appointments, reducing, or eliminating, the stigma attached to PTSD in veterans,
providing a way for veterans to receive immediate PTSD crisis help, and a way to ensure that veterans
diagnosed with PTSD continue treatment.
Veterans often experience long wait times to schedule an appointment for PTSD. Through additional
research I have found that according to a study in 2003 by the American Legion, of approximately
300,000 veterans waiting for health care, over half of them had been waiting over eight months for an
appointment (American Legion, 2013). I further researched how many VA facilities in the United
States offer specialized treatment for PTSD. In all 50 states, and Washington, DC, there are a total of
139 facilities (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2015). I propose to conduct a telephone

Robinson And Owens, African American Allstars Essay
Robinson and Owens, African American Allstars There are many people in the world who have made
an impact on America. Many people are known for their strength ,courage, and willingness to fight for
their beliefs. That is what Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens have in common; they fought for what
they believed in. They broke color barriers, set records, and changed American history. Although they
bear some minor similarities, the differences between Jackie and Jesse are clear. Jackie Robinson s
background and childhood environment had a major impact on the ways he went about changing
African American lives. He is famous for saying that a life is not important except in the impact it has
on other lives (Jackie 1). Jack (Jackie) Roosevelt Robinson is famously well known for becoming the
first black player in the major leagues and playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He was born
on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. He also was the youngest of five children and he was raised
by a single mother. His older brother, Matthew, actually inspired him to pursue his dream in sports.
Surprisingly, Matthew won a silver medal in the 200 meter dash, just behind Jesse Owens in the 1936
Olympic games in Berlin. Jackie went to John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior College, which
are the places where he played a various amount of sports growing up. His reputation as a household
name began to gain traction during this time. He was awarded the Region s Most Valuable

Throughout the time of the Great depression many people were homeless and unemployed. It was
caused by enormous growth of goods and prices of shares in the United States during 1920s.
Companies were producing more products than they could sell, while most Americans could not
afford it because they were too poor. Also investors borrowed money from banks to buy shares so they
could sell them for quick profits when prices rose. In 1920s this caused share prices reached
unrealistic amounts and when investors lost confidence they rushed to sell shares, prices collapsed.
Results in this huge fall meant demands for goods vanished and people were left unemployed and
banks closed while poverty spread. Australia also was affected because Australia owed a large and
increasing amount of interest to overseas lenders. Many works were left unemployed and in 1932
employment rates were 29.0. A picture of an Australia family can be seen on page 16 source 4 of

  • 2. Book 15 Of The Iliad Essay In the novel The Iliad, written by Homer, a variety of themes can be interpreted from the text. Book 15 of The Iliad contains a scene that involves Achilles risking his best friends life simply because he incapable of letting go. Earlier, in book 6, Prince Paris experiences a moment of courage and challenges King Menelaus over the hand of a woman named Helen. Again, Paris is caught in a violent scene fighting to protect his self pride. In a period of cowardice Paris brother Hector discovers him hiding from battle, and attacks his ego, forcing him to fight once again. Some may say The Iliad is about honor, importance of war, or revenge, but one message that stands above the rest is the hunger for superiority. During book 16 of The Iliad the Achaeans are pushed dangerously close to the coast by the Trojan army. It was at this time that Patroclus seeks the aid of his dear friend Achilles. Patroclus explains to Achilles the carnage that surrounds him and begs his comrade to rejoin the fight. Achilles, still sore over his disagreement with Agamemnon, refuses to fight. As a compromise Achilles offers his armor to Patroclus ensuring his safety: Up now, Zeus born Patroclus, master of horsemen. Lo, I see by the ships the rush of consuming fire. Let it not be that they take the ships and there be no more escaping! Do on my armour with all haste, and I will gather the host (Book 16). This decision brings Patroclus to his eminent doom on the battlefield. It s clear to see that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Examples Of Inhumanity In Tuesdays With Morrie Where would the world be without humanity? Would it be laying in ruins because of needless wars fought? Perhaps there would be a so called master race that exterminated any person that slightly deviated from what was deemed perfect. Maybe there would be no more humans left at all. Humanity binds the human race together. The caring for other people and not just thinking about yourself. The word is humanity, and the root of that is human. This concept is central to all our beliefs. Just like a coin though, there is a flip side. Inhumanity, when humans do not act like regular humans. To be described as inhuman a person has to be extremely nefarious. These people that commit inhuman acts upon others are treated as monsters, and by all rights are monsters. Both of the books we read this semester dealt with humanity and inhumanity. Although one book clearly had a lot more inhumanity in it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An old friend of the main character was dying. Morrie has ALS, it is a crippling disease that affects the nervous system. Mitch is very upset about Morrie dieing. Morrie taught Mitch a lot about life and humanity. Morrie taught Mitch how to feel, and hot to deal with emotions. Even though Morrie is dying slowly and painfully, Morrie is staying positive. On one occasion Morrie tells Mitch that in the mornings is when Morrie mourns. Morrie mourns the insidious disease and mourns what is lost. After that Morrie cries if needed, and thinks about all the good things still left in life(Albom 57). This is exactly how to balance inhumanity and humanity. People must always look at the good in every situation. In Night the characters tried to stay positive just as Morrie is trying to. Morrie once said, make peace with living (173). Morrie was content in dying and held no unrealistic beliefs. Mitch believed it was wrong to take someone who had helped him so much away, but death is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Charles Dickens Stylistic Devices Essay Course Tutor Date Charles Dickens and the making of the modern age Charles Dickens has used various stylistic devices in his literary works that he did between the year 1812 1870. He employed different styles just like any other author to make his point out using changing styles in literature. Most of the imagery and characters in his writings cannot be taken to be literal since they had some hidden meaning in them. He employed the dramatic technique in his novels, which took a form of more of cinema than pure theater like most of the literature works. There are a lot of dramatic picture scenes which ring into our minds when we study his novels like the Fagin s den in the novel of Oliver Twist. These dramatic pictures convey meanings in themselves in this literature. There is also a gradual change in the style that Dickens employ in his works like changes in pronominal reference, elaboration, and nominalisation. This paper analyses the different styles used by Dickens in his novels those before the 1850 and those after 1850. Oliver Twist In the novel of Oliver Twist, Dickens employ a stylistic device that is considered to be different to the stylistic device employed in other works by the same author. In this novel, he employed a shifting narrative voice, which makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. Bioengineer s Role In Oryx And Crake Bioengineer and its role in Oryx and Crake Oryx and Crake is one of my favorite readings in the semester. I like the flow and arrangement of the plots. The novel is an enthralling post apocalyptic story with a detailed description of the science and technology it based on. The most important science and technology involved in the novel is genetic or Bioengineering. The novel was written in late 20th century and early 21st century, a time when many breakthroughs and controversial Bioengineering incidents took place. Atwood is known as an avid environmentalist of the time. She was concerned about the ethical controversial and the downplay of the humanities at the time and choose to use her work to examine the trend in development and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the novel, the two main characters grew up in a cosmetic focused Bioengineering company s compound. The creation of a compound integrating different functions and providing different services for a company is not such a novel idea today. Many internet tycoons like Google and Microsoft have their own campuses which provide similar services and amenities to their employees as the compounds described in the book. However, to emphasize the effect Bioengineering would have on a society, Atwood took a step forward by making the compounds more secluded and exaggerated the power and functionalities of them. The seclusion created by the Bioengineering companies directly led to the divided social classes. People who were associated with companies resided in the privileged compound and people who were not related to the company lived in the dangerous Pleebland. It was a privileged but also an underprivileged to be in the compound in a way. Unlike the charitable attributes of technology companies campuses today, the compounds in the book were created to withhold the scientists and protect the Bioengineering secrets of the companies. Jimmy s mother viewed it as a prison and Jimmy in the later chapters would try to use the word freedom to persuade his mistress to elope with him to Pleebland. The corporate power enabled by exclusive Bioengineering technology can be seen throughout the book. Bioengineering companies had control over every aspect of the daily life for people live both inside and outside of the compounds. Atwood warned the risks of having monopoly Bioengineering companies by making all the companies in the book monopolies. This kind of monopoly enabled technological power to develop into political power and eliminated the existence of any modern government structures. The overpowering of the Bioengineering companies also leads to the complete lack of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Case Of Ninth Circuit Court Ninth Circuit Court holds that an employee has a reasonable expectation of privacy in their private office, because it is locked and not shared with others. This reasonable expectation of privacy extends to the contents of their office, including the employee s company computer, located therein. As a result, the court held that the fourth amendment protects both the office and computer from warrantless searches by the government unless it obtains valid consent from either the defendant or one with common authority over the items searched, or proceeds on the authorization of one with apparent authority to give such valid consent. In this case, the Ninth Circuit holds that the government obtained valid consent from one with common authority over the items searched, when it received such consent from the employee s employer. The employer had common authority over the employee s office computer because it had a policy of, and regularly did, monitor employees computer usage of company machines, a policy of which its employees were made aware. The court accordingly denied defendant s motion to suppress evidence found by the government during its warrantless search of defendant s office computer. As a result, pursuant to a plea agreement, defendant was convicted of the receipt of obscene material based, in part, on evidence obtained during this search. The evidence obtained during this search, and by the company earlier, showed that defendant had viewed and had possession of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Loneliness Is Not Good For The Man Of all the fantasies that human beings entertain, the idea that we can go it alone is the most absurd and perhaps the most dangerous. We stand together or we fall apart. George Monbiot Did you know the physical effects of loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day? Loneliness raises your chance of death by 26%. While we known intuitively that loneliness is harmful, science is beginning to show just how harmful. At the very beginning of the Bible, God declares, It is not good for the man to be alone. And yet, in our western society we constantly seek after individualism. We think that somehow we ll be able to achieve what we want on our own. The drive to go it alone is deeply rooted in our culture and we re seeing the effects of what we ve sown. Mental illness is on the rise. One in four women between 16 and 24 have harmed themselves, another 26% of these women are also affected by anxiety, depression, phobias or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. While depression and loneliness are at an all time high, we need leaders to rise up and blah blah blah In The Prince, the world Machiavelli lays out for a leader is a lonely one. The better to be feared than loved principle is an idea that stifles community and isolates a leader. The story of Esther, however, proposes a different view of leadership, one in which community is of high value. • 10. Christian Music Vs. Secular Music While gazing at a statue of Isaac Watt in Westminster Abbey, the great English poet Victor Longfellow once quipped, He only did better what no man has ever done well! Professor Edward B. Reed voiced a similar opinion, In this great mass of poetry (hymnody) there is little that shows artistic excellence. Both men were correct. In terms of artistic merit, Christian hymnody pales greatly in quality in comparison to secular music. The reason for such a disparity is simple: the world s best composers, musicians, and songwriters do not work for the church; they work in the secular music industry. How then, do the local churches, especially smaller parishes, achieve excellence regarding music in liturgy? In a word, they do not because they cannot. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, in order for the masses to accept it, contemporary forms of music must sound contemporary to the modern ear. To achieve a high degree of authenticity, modern church music must be played on modern instrumentation by musicians who possess specific experience and particular knowledge and the appropriate training. The modern mission constituency is too sophisticated to tolerate and accept watered down renditions of rock, country, folk, or blues music played on pipe organs by classically trained pipe organists who noticeably misunderstand and disrespect the subtleties inherent in 21st Century music. At best, they merely retool modern genres to suit and satisfy classical palates. J. S. Bach s B Minor Mass with its great chorale fugues, elaborately ornamented arias, and orchestral accompaniment, may very well be the greatest chorale work ever composed; however, liturgical music is ill conceived as a great art form. Michaela Leung Ms. Jiroch English 9, Period 6 March 9, 2015 It s All in the Head: A study of modern characterization through the works of Salinger and Woolf During the twentieth century, many writers emerged including, J.D. Salinger and Virginia Woolf. Virginia Woolf helped show that the novel didn t have to just be about the big and the grand, but also the everyday. Salinger and Woolf s books often included intimate details from their lives. They broadened the field of what was considered acceptable for writing. For example, in The New Dress , a short story by Virginia Woolf, Mabel struggles with depression and bipolar disorder. Woolf also struggled with depression and bipolar disorder throughout her life. In the works of Salinger and Woolf, the reader first notices that stream of consciousness does not allow for the characters to keep secrets and reveals their hypocrisy as they behave differently than their thoughts. Holden s hidden sides are revealed in when he talks about those who he cares about such as when he talks about his dead brother: My brother Allie has this left handed fielder s mitt (Salinger 38). Holden says I m the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life but shows that he actually cares about people in his life such as Jane Gallagher and his siblings Allie and Phoebe (Salinger 16). In Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, Peter Walsh, a former lover of Mrs Dalloway, visits her and tries to seem detached but we see from inside his mind his true thoughts: But it was Clarissa one remembered...Not that she was striking; not beautiful at all; there was nothing picturesque about her; she never said anything especially clever; there she was, however; there she was. No, no, no! He was not in love with her any more! (Dalloway 76). Peter has been unable to move on from Clarissa and he tries to convince himself and others that he loves another woman, but he cannot lie to himself and therefore we, the readers, see the truth. • 21. Construct Validity Research The above examples provide evidence that a personality measurement can be examined through its reliability. A good personality test should have the same findings in different occasions (i.e. test retest reliability) and also all of the items in the test should be measuring the same thing (i.e. internal consistency). Nevertheless, personality measurement can be evaluated by its validity as well. Construct validity is one of the main subtypes of validity. Construct validity refers to the ability that a personality test measures what it is intended to measure. Discriminant validity is a subtype of construct validity, which refers to the extent that the concept that is not related to the test doesn t emerge in the test. Soto, C. J., John, O. P. (2009) tested the discriminant validity by comparing the BFI with the NEO PI R. They showed that the correlation between the BFI and NEO PI R facet scales has high discriminant validity. Each BFI facet scales correlated most with the corresponding NEO PI R facet scales than with the other NEO PI R facet. This research demonstrated that BFI is discriminant valid because it only correlates most with the corresponding items on the NEO PI R. Furthermore, McCrae and Costa, P. T. • 22. Summary Of Jhumpa Lahiri s The Namesake The first sentence of a novel, even a chapter, needs to leave a first impression. Jhumpa Lahiri in her novel The Namesake wields the first sentence in each of her chapters, so they build through her book in a far more significant way than just a first impression. Lahiri uses the first sentence of every chapter to further the plot development by clearly setting new scenes to transition to the new setting and sub purpose of the next chapter. To successfully set her scenes, she uses varying Syntax and rhetorical tools including imagery, short syntax with a focus, and grammatical mistakes. Of the different ways Lahiri sets her scenes, the first sentences that provide the most context are the ones that employ imagery and have a long syntax structure. Lahiri takes advantage of these sentences when the book is currently in a place with minimal conflict and the mood of the book is new and very different from what it was previously. The main goal is to develop what is currently a clean slate. The cleanest slate being the first chapter, which starts on a sticky August evening two weeks before her due date, Ashima Ganguli stands in the kitchen of a Central Square apartment, combining Rice Krispies and Planters peanuts and chopped red onion in a bowl (Lahiri 1). This sentence provides a who, what, when, where, and how, which covers almost all the basic context. The reader can now understand the scene, so the author could start describing actions going on in the scene. Another clean slate in The Namesake is the chapter after Gogol and Monshumi s wedding, and they attend a dinner party. Lahiri ends that section and it shifts to their anniversary; On the morning of their first anniversary, Monshumi s parents call, waking them, wishing them a happy anniversary before they ve had the chance to say it to each other (246). This sentence provides a who, what, when, where, and why, which sets a completely new scene. The long syntax allows for Lahiri to provide all this information, so the reader can start picturing the scene. In turn, this strategy creates a very solid transition to a completely different place and point of view to focus on. On the other hand, Lahiri uses short syntax with a very particular focus to start ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Performance And Reward Management System Performance ratings is part of the performance and reward management system that used to support organisations personnel decisions in performance appraisal, promotion, compensation, and employee development (Yun, Donahus, Dudley, McFarland, 2005). Accurate performance ratings are fundamental to the success or failure of the performance management process, therefore, raters have been suggested to be fully trained to minimise potential errors in performance ratings (Biron, Farndale, Paauwe, 2011). Several rater training programs have been developed to enhance the quality of performance ratings, such as rater error training and frame of reference training (MacDonald Sulsky, 2009). Nevertheless, not all rater training programs have been equally successful, many researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of frame of reference training in increasing rating accuracy (Woehr, 1994; Keown Gerrard Sulsky, 2001; Roch, Woehr, Mishra, Kieszczynska, 2012). The following will assess the effectiveness of frame of reference training in increasing rating quality through comprehensive examination of its validity, accuracy and reliability. Explanation for Frame of Reference Training Early approaches to rater training were focused mainly on reducing raters common errors, (MacDonald Sulsky, 2009). Furthermore, Rowlandson s experiences in captivity and encounter with the new, or Other religion of the Indians cause her rethink, and question her past; her experiences do not however cause her to redirect her life or change her ideals in any way. At the end of the narrative Rowlandson confirms this claim with the remark: When I lived in prosperity; having the comforts of this World about me, my Relations by me, and my heart cheerful: and taking little care for any thing; and yet seeing many (whom I preferred before myself) under many trials and afflictions, in sickness, weakness, poverty, losses, crosses, and cares of the Worlds, I should be sometimes jealous least I should have my portion in this life but now I see the Lord had his time to scourge and chasten me (50). The evidence from the narrative in many ways could characterize this work as a text in which the narrator (Mary Rowlandson) realizes her mistakes in the past and redirects her life accordingly. This is not true in the case of Rowlandson, to be more specific her experiences and interaction with the Indians do not challenge her Puritan ideologies, but rather confirms and strengthens them. The Japanese invaded China as early as 1931, and over the next decade quickly spread throughout China under their imperialist and militarist conquest. Li Junzheng, my grandmother, lived through Japanese invasion. Li Junzheng was born in June, 1938. She lived in a rural village in China called Yuyao, a few hours outside of Shanghai, which was a bustling city already. At the time, China was going through the Second Sino Japanese War. By large, the fighting hadn t reached Junzheng s rural village, but the country was in turmoil. China was a very young country after the end of dynastic rule in 1912, and different political factions and warlords fought for power. The common people lived in poverty for the most part. When Junzheng was just three years old, in 1941, the Japanese invaded the area near her village. To escape being beaten, tortured, or killed, Junzheng s family fled into the mountains that surrounded her rural town. She recalled that, Everyone fled into the mountains. Some people led their cows up with them, and even the cows were terrified. The mountains were steep and people were afraid of falling. A little update to this situation it is now six, nothing has been added, but my work and I have had zero contact with my group. So I will say my group had little engagement in this project, one member did make the Google document, but nothing has been started. I think I learned a lot about my teamwork skills. I am such a perfectionist and like to get things done early. Working with a group makes it challenging, because people had different time schedules. How can the American veterans be better taken care of? I will focus on the following four specific issues that are in need of reform, 1. How can wait times be decreased for veterans seeking mental health treatment? 2. How can the stigma attached to PTSD in veterans be eliminated? 3. How can veterans receive immediate assistance in times of crisis? 4. How can we ensure that diagnosed PTSD veterans will continue treatment after receiving full monetary compensation? Focusing on these research questions, I propose to conduct research on decreasing wait times for PTSD related appointments, reducing, or eliminating, the stigma attached to PTSD in veterans, providing a way for veterans to receive immediate PTSD crisis help, and a way to ensure that veterans diagnosed with PTSD continue treatment. Veterans often experience long wait times to schedule an appointment for PTSD. Through additional research I have found that according to a study in 2003 by the American Legion, of approximately 300,000 veterans waiting for health care, over half of them had been waiting over eight months for an appointment (American Legion, 2013).
