Families On The Home Front During Wwii
Families on the Home Front during WWII by Ewa Bieciuk
HIST 2200 U.S. History Since 1877
Summer 2015
Prof. Hardin September 1st, 1939 is a day that changed the course of history. Lives were lost,
families ripped apart, towns destroyed, and jobs were created. World War II had just begun with
the majority of the main countries in our world participating in the war that would ultimately kill
millions of soldiers and civilians. Two years later, on December 8th, 1941 after the Japanese
surprisingly attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war fully. During this time, the
U.S. enlisted the help of the entire nation; soldiers, factory workers, nurses, and doctors were
required both overseas and on the home front. While many men were sent to fight over seas or
prepare at combat training on bases in the U.S., factories and other business were left with a
shortage of workers. World War II encouraged, or more accurately, forced, women and wives to
leave their homes to begin working. A familiar image that many Americans are familiar with is of
the women flexing announcing We Can Do It! , which is greatly recognized as a symbol of the
female presence in the workforce. Young adults dropped out of school to help out in numerous
ways. The amount of children working also increased greatly. Desperate measures to save money
and help in the wartime effort lead to many drastic changes in roles and lifestyles of American
families on the home front.

How Does Heller Use Dialogue In Catch 22
Use of Language and Dialogue Catch 22
Catch 22 is probably best discussed in terms of its language. The prose style Heller employs is
original and distinctive, appropriate and well implemented (Pearson 277). One application of that
prose style is dialogue; Heller uses dialogue to manifest the themes of the novel. Some of the
themes best shown in the dialogue of the characters are Heller s hatred of war, and his perceived
idiocy in military and in bureaucracy. Scattered throughout the book are several dialogues which
share numerous characteristics. Some particular conversations are especially demonstrative of these
elements. Heller uses these dialogues to communicate his ideas to the reader. In chapter XXXVI,
several military ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What crime?
We don t know yet, said the colonel. But we re going to find out. And we sure know it s very
serious (373).
Heller s governmental agents are illogical to either a subhuman or to asuperhuman extent. In
another instance, an undercover C.I.D. man fails toconsider the possibility that the culprit who
incorrectly edits letters would sign a nameother than his own. Time after time these agent display
profound disregard for the highercranial facilities.
In the same way that the bureaucratic thought process is convoluted, governmental action (or
inaction) is also often senseless. Often the very nature of an actionprecludes itself: this sort of
situation crops up during the interrogation, for instance, when one of the military officers asks the
chaplain for a handwriting sample in order tocompare the sample to a letter. When the handwriting
sample fails to match that of the letter, the officer concludes that of course of course! the chaplain is
fakinghis handwriting:
I can t tell you how disappointed I am in you.
For what? persisted the chaplain more frantically. What have I done?
For this, replied the major, and, with an air of disillusioned disgust, tossed down on the table the
pad on which the chaplain had signed his name. This isn t your handwriting.
The chaplain blinked

Oil Spill Response Essay
An introduction of the characteristics of the ecosytem community
Understanding various ecosystems allow us to better understand the impact in which the deep
horizon spill had within each type of ecosystem. The oil spill occurred around three specific
types of ecosystems including the coastal areas, the freshwater areas, and the upland areas. The
coastal areas often contain salty marshes which can be harsh on many plants. These coastal areas
also include tropical coral reefs, sand dunes, and maritime forests. The freshwater areas include
rivers and springs, lakes, swamps and freshwater marshes while the upland areas have pine and
Flatwoods, temperate forests, and scrub (Par. 5). Each of these ecosystems can provide a different
mixtures of challenges ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example is provided by the USGS Oil Spill Response, which utilized surveys to gather data
on coastal impacts, wildlife issues, and many other related issues from the oil spill. The USGS
continues to mobilize equipment and personnel to gather scientific data and information on the
environmental impacts of the oil spill to affected coastal habitats (Par. 2). Based on this research,
researchers have discovered that even after four years after the incident, the area still shows signs
of major environmental damage. There have been many signs, researchers say, that several animals
and other living species in the Gulf of Mexico have experienced exceptional loss of life since the
spill (Al, 2014, Par. 1). The specific species from data sampling include: ottlenose dolphins, red
snapper, blue crab, Atlantic Bluefin tuna, gulf killifish, sperm whales, sea turtles, white pelicans,
seaside sparrows, eastern oysters, coral, common loon, brown pelicans and small marine creatures
called foraminifera (Par. 5). The following table also displays useful information regarding
ecological and environmental impact from the oil spill based on data gathered from

2016 Voter Turnout
Overall, the 2016 voter turnout was lower than ever before. The United States is a country that has
some of the lowest voter turnouts in history, and unlike Australia, the USA doesn t make voting
mandatory. About 48 to 57% of citizens normally participate in the presidential election voting but
in 2016 many American s decided to opt out lowering the voter turnoutto a mere 55% of the
American population. When American s didn t vote that decision most likely came due to the fact
that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were both two of the most disliked presidential candidates
in the past 30 years. We are also aware that presidential electionsare more competitive in some
states, and Republicans didn t seem to vote as much as people in swing

Character Analysis Of A Problem By Anton Chekhov
intro / p1 apathetic / p2 irresponsible/stubborn / p3 miscreant/
Characters are ultimately defined as the driving forces throughout various stories; therefore,
characters possess diverse traits and emotions that motivate them to further a plot through their
dialogue and action. Furthermore, Anton Chekhov centers his short story, A Problem , around a
delinquent youth named Sasha Uskov. As a character who is arguably quite complex, Chekhov
emphasizes these elements of characterization with a certain depth that encourages readers to
distinguish Sasha and Ivan, his uncle, as static and dynamic characters respectively. Sasha is
undeniably avaricious, whether it be due to the societal influence in Russia during the late 1800s,
or a personal, intense yearning for material wealth. This materialistic nature can be elaborated upon
by his actions throughout the story. For example, A Problem is entirely constructed on the situation
Sasha has imposed on the family by forging a promissory note and furthering his debt. Moreover,
Sasha s obstinance appears throughout his dialogue, which denies any relation to criminality as a
whole, belaying that he is either stubborn or close minded. However, his intricacy entirely
manifests itself toward the conclusion. Despite Sasha remaining as a miscreant throughout the
entire story, he does acknowledge his long needed self revelation that he is indeed a criminal.
Therefore, it can be deduced that Sasha is not entirely as static as Chekhov may initially want his
readers to believe. Chekhov s clever characterization portrays him as a stubborn criminal, rightfully
so, but additionally implies his complex nature as a confused youth who firmly believed he was
not a criminal and has been influenced by his peers who are clearly committing the very same
crimes.
From the very beginning, Chekhov exposes his readers to Sasha s apathetic behavior and
establishes that Sasha is beyond all possible redemption. Moreover, Chekhov made it a point to
frequently direct attention to Sasha s indifference through his well written characterization.
Chekhov, in reference to Sasha, revealed, He felt neither terror, shame, nor depression, but only
weariness and inward emptiness (page 3). This

Nestle Global Strategy
Introduction International business has seen a significant surge over the past few decades.
Contemporarily, it is now commonplace for large businesses to operate in many countries and
serve many markets (Bird Mendenhall, 2015). Companies that operate in numerous countries while
providing the same services world wide as in their home country are called global organizations.
An example of one such global organization is Nestle. Nestle is a food and beverage company that
operates in every continent on the planet. They operate in 21 African countries, 26 North, South,
and Central American countries, 30 Asian countries, 33 European countries including their home
country, and six countries in Oceania. Nestle was founded 150 years ago in... Show more content on

Trending Topics Upon researching the consumers perspectives about Nestle through social media
platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, it is evident that the trending topics related to Nestle are
regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and the privatization of water. Genetically
modified organisms have been a nutrition topic of concern over the past decade. Despite scientific
consensus to the contrary, consumers remain concerned about potential health risks of consuming
genetically modified foods. The recent trending stories against Nestle are consumers that are
concerned with Nestle s stance on blocking GMO labeling laws. Likewise, consumers are also
distraught over the perception that Nestle is selling water. Many consumers feel as though access
to safe, sanitized water should be a human right and water should not be sold, but rather readily
accessible to everyone. Moreover, these customers believe that Nestle s participation in the sale of
water is immoral and inhumane and these customers may be choosing to purchase from other
companies who do not participate in the private sector vending of water.

Stereotypes Of Poisoned People In Today s Society
Poisoned People In today s society, people do not realize the harm they do to one or another.
Endless amounts of people are being characterized negatively and sometimes positive nearly for the
simplest thing. Unfortunately, we live in a society that cherishes emotions of regret and envious, at
times to a higher degree than the one illustrated throughout the play. Moreover, it is known to have
a bias characteristic towards envying others and their accomplishments without one appreciating
their own accomplishments. Also, one tends to be negative within their own appearance, since the
media focuses on beauty instead of knowledge. Beauty instead of knowledge is like saying that

Sleeping Beauty, A Paraphilia
Sleeping Beauty, a fairy tale so rampant with sexual abuse that it actually has a word named
after it. Somnophilia, also known as the sleeping beauty syndrome is a paraphilia in which an
individual becomes sexually aroused by someone who is asleep or unconscious (this can be
considered rape). Can any other fairytale boast to having a fetish named after them? Original
versions of fairy tales often overlooked a key aspect that is considered as one of the most
important words in today s society. Consent. Consent is key. The distinction between the words yes
and no have been clearly defined. How have the modern adaptations of fairy tales have introduced
consent in their retelling? I ll be focusing on how the idea of consent has been introduced in recent
adaptations of Sleeping Beautyand Snow White and how they ve evolved from their original
versions.
Basile s Sun, Moon and Talia, the oldest version of Sleeping Beauty is a prime example of non
consensual sexual activity. Talia (Sleeping Beauty) having pricked her finger on flax falls
lifeless. Her father, the King, sits her on the throne and leaves, unable to stand the sight of his
daughter in such a state. A falcon belonging to a King hunting nearby flies into the abandoned
castle and the King in search of his bird stumbles upon Talia s lifeless body. Entranced by her
beauty, he engages in sexual intercourse with her impregnating her and leaves her body as he
found her, lifeless. Talia gives birth, all the while asleep.

Genetic Screening Persuasive Essay
Prevention is the greatest protection A few years ago, my neighbor got married and was ready to
have a baby. Unfortunately, he and his wife s pre pregnancy check showed that they had a
thalassemia gene, and if they gave birth to a child, the child was likely to die because of severe
thalassemia. Although they want to have a child belonging to themselves, they finally chose to
adopt a child. Thalassemia is a common genetic disease in my province, the local government calls
on all couples to accept genetic screening before pregnancy to avoid newborns with severe

improved power. Moderate stretching however, helps to increase the flexibility and power. To get
the benefit, stretch gently after training and stop before it reach to the point where it can harm to
the joints . Low intensity stretching is also speeded up the removal of the waste material.
Safe Stretching:
Safe stretching mean it should be done according to the proper rule and training so that it should
not cause harm instead of benefits .we should get proper training from instructor to get its
advantages instead of disadvantages. We are to do exercise in a limit so it may not harm the joints
and increase the power strength and flexibility.
Detriments:
Over stretching or stretching to a point where pain is felt may be harmful and detrimental. Effects
on performance, both long and short term, may include injury and possible nerve damage which
can be permenant and could not be cured. Other research concludes that active stretching routines
will reduce viscosity in the joints and cause pain after some time when you get older. In sports

Colorado Water Shortage Essay
Colorado s Water Shortage; a Localized Problem with a National Salience
The Issue at Hand
The State of Colorado has suffered from a water shortage in recent years; a difficult situation
which is easily visible when viewing the quickly shortening length of the Colorado River. Lake
Mead, for example, is roughly 130 feet lower than it once was, marked by the stained rock which
towers above the current water level. The river has become a perfect symbol of what happens
when we ask too much of a limited resource: it disappears. In fact, the Colorado no longer regularly
reaches the sea (Zielinski, 2010). Legislation was implemented early on to address this issue,
though the results were (perhaps not surprisingly) rather unanticipated, regarding ... Show more

The upper basin states (including Colorado) were allocated a much greater percentage of the water
than the lower basin states, while the upper basin states were developing at a much slower rate than
those in the lower basin, notably California. Nevada (as of 1997) anticipated being unable to rely
just on this water by 2015, while in 1997 California was already exceeding its originally allocated
supply by diverting unused water from the upper basin states (Arizona.edu, 1997). It goes without
saying that this legislation from the early twentieth century is not going to be sufficient in coming
years as the development of these regions has progressed at a much faster rate than originally
anticipated, and it is the responsibility of state and federal governments, water management
companies, as well as appeals from farmers and non farming residents alike to come to an
agreement on how to apportion water and how to implement secondary hydration plans due to the
rapidly declining resource that the once magnificent Colorado River was able to supply us

Computers And Conscious Problem Solving Essay
A. Studying Memory
a. Memory The persistence of learning over time through the encoding, storage, and retrieval of
information.
I. Memory Models
a. Information processing models are analogies that compare human memory to a computer s
operations.
b. To remember any event, we must:
get information into our brain, encoding
retain that information, storage
later get the information back out, retrieval
c. Encoding The processing of information into the memory system for example, by extracting
meaning.
d. Storage The process of retaining encoded information over time.
e. Retrieval The process of getting information out of memory storage.
f. Parallel Processing The processing of many aspects of a problem simultaneously; the brain s
natural mode of information processing for many functions. Contrasts with the step by step (serial)
processing of most computers and of conscious problem solving.
g. We can explain our memory forming process with three stages:
1. We first record to be remembered information as a fleeting sensory memory.
2. From there, we process information into short term memory. where we encode it through
rehearsal.
3. Finally, information moves into long term memory for later retrieval.
h. Sensory Memory The immediate, very brief recording of sensory information in the memory
system.
i. Short term memory Activated memory that holds a few items briefly, such as the seven digits of a

The Virginia Quarterly Review, Orr revisited the place of his abduction by armed vigilantes in

peaceful demonstration, Gregory Orr and the rest of the group were arrested and taken away to
the county fairgrounds (128, 1). Where they was beaten by officers of the law, Orr stated, I
emerged into the outdoors and the bright sunlight and saw them two lines of about fifteen
highway patrolmen on either side. I was ordered to walk, not run, between them. Again I was
beaten with nightsticks, but this time more thoroughly, as I was the only target (129, 2). Once
freed from his captors, Gregory Orr gets in his car to head back north, but on his way back he was
pulled over by flashing lights. Thinking it was the police; Gregory Orr pulled over and was

after Jefferson had left. In the words of Jefferson, this is how much he loved his macaronni
machine: The best maccaroni in Italy is made with a particular sort of flour called Semola, in
Naples: but in almost every shop a different sort of flour is commonly used; for, provided the
flour be of a good quality, and not ground extremely fine, it will always do very well. A paste is
made with flour, water and less yeast than is used for making bread. This paste is then put, by
little at a time, viz. about 5. or 6. lb. each time into a round iron box ABC, the under part of
which is perforated with holes, through which the paste, when pressed by the screw DEF,

Sherlock Holmes V. Sherlock. There Always Seems To Be A
Sherlock Holmes v. Sherlock
There always seems to be a debate on which portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is better.; the movie
with Robert Downey Jr. or the show with Benedict Cumberbatch? The movie and show are based
on Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but are different in aspects such as actor portrayals,
levels of complexity, and main character deaths. These aspects make the show better than the movie.
Both shows have relatively the same characters, but the portrayals vary greatly. In the movie,
Robert Downey Jr. portrayal of Sherlock was very bland. Sherlock found little to no satisfaction in
being a high functioning sociopath with amazing deductive skills. There was no connection with

Watson takes care of and tries to keep Sherlock out of trouble, but is almost always ready to go
on a case and join in on the troublesome game. He balances Sherlock s sociopath tendencies but
brings his own wonder to the show. Watson makes sure he is heard and is the voice of reason.
Additionally, Andrew Scott as Moriarty is perfect. He has the psychopathic behavior and is very
conniving and mysterious. Scott makes him unnerving because you know he is a master criminal
and will not hesitate to kill people. Yet he still keeps the character relatable. Scott makes Moriarty a
serious psychotic man but brings slight comedy to the part by not being serious.
The show is better than the movie because the character portrayals are much better because they
are more relatable and overall intriguing. The development of the characters is detailed but leaves
enough out to keep it clouded with mystery. On top of a better portrayal of characters, the show has
a better level of complexity.
In the movie, the Moriarty case was complex and difficult to follow. The case was difficult because
Sherlock is going against someone on his intelligence level, so the audience struggles to keep up.
Also, having a backstory with the gypsy that helped throughout the movie added to the plot but was
more of a distraction. The ending was not that complex though. The impending murder kept you
guessing, but not the death of Moriarty.

Around 400,000 robberies occur every year (fbi.gov). In the short story A Retrieved
Reformation By: O. Henry, Jimmy Valentine was a criminal who moved to Elmore, a small town
in Arkansas, looking for a fresh start. He changed his name and fell in love with the bank owner

was going to give up his robbing bank tools so he would be able to change for his fiance. On his

He changed his name when he first came to town so the cops would not be able to find him also
so no one would suspect he was a robber. This argument is invalid because the detective Ben
Price found Jimmy and thought that he was a changed man so Ben did not arrest him. In the
letter Jimmy lied about going to Little Rock to give away his tools he actually was going to rob
another bank. There is no evidence to support that Jimmy was going to Little Rock to rob another
bank. Finally Jimmy did not change for Annabel he only acted different so she would like Jimmy
and he would be able to get close to the bank to rob it. Jimmy fell in love with Annabel the first
time he saw her, Annabel thought fondly of him so Jimmy was not only acting different to rob the
bank. All of these arguments can not be supported by evidence so Jimmy was able to change.
Since Jimmy Valentine wanted to change for his fiance, was going to give away his bank
robbing tools and changed his name so he could have a fresh start, Jimmy Valentine is a new,
changed man. Jimmy Valentine did receive a fresh start he opened his own shoe shop, the shoe
shop prospered. He also got engaged to Annabel Adams. Finally Jimmy saved a girl who was
trapped in a vault. About only 2% of robberies each year are bank robberies

Symbolism and Allusion in Maya Angelou s My Arkansas Essay
Symbolism and Allusion in Maya Angelou s My Arkansas
There is a deep brooding/ in Arkansas. Arkansas is stuck in the past, its memories of hatred and
crime from ante bellum days hindering the progression towards Civil Rights. Maya Angelou s
poem of the struggle to a new wave of equality uses both general symbolism and historical allusion
to make its theme clear to the reader. The poem uses general symbolism in nature, in time, and
historical allusion to make the theme clear in a concise but vibrant poem.
The general symbolism relating to nature assumes a common base of knowledge from which
symbolism can be built. The poem opens with a description ... Show more content on

Secondly, the red earth can be associated with the desert, a place where no vegetation can grow.
The red earth, whether stained with the blood of the past or a place where life cannot be sustained,
continues to paint the picture of an unending struggle toward the future for the new and growing
poplar tree.
The theme of new beginnings and the harness of the past in another natural setting is discussed
again in the second stanza, but now with a focus on time. The visual image presented my the
passage as the sun hesitating and losing its direction show allow the reader to observe the
symbolism of the sun. The sun universally represents time, the rise and set of sun symbolizing the
beginning and ending of each day, days leading into months, years, and lifetimes. The rise of the
sun is a new beginning, but it seems to hesitate, and lose its/ incandescent aim. The new beginning
brought on by the rising of the sun was held back and lost in that second. Hope and the fresh start
were halted by the sun, who was not ready to let time pass and continue. The passage concludes
with an affirmation of the symbolism, that the past is brighter yet than the sun who could not pull
the new start cleanly into the future.
The poem is put into a clear context at the end by way of historical allusion. The phrase ante

create in kids an odd and unpleasant feeling. The constant exposure to depressors and bring me

to extraordinary stories and even more impressive characters. In Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, we

The way kids are raised by their parents effects their decision making and their values, beliefs
and self image until the day they die. If a kid grows up figuring things out herself or is neglected
etc., that kid is forced to do what is necessary to develop as fully as possible. Hamama and Arazi
describe family relationships as being crucial in the development of the child. The article specifies
that two direct ways that kids are hurt is through family cohesion and subjective well being.
Family cohesion, in this article, is defined as the connections between family members that each
family has, while subjective well being talks about people s understanding of the life they live and
how they react to everyday situations and how all that effects their emotional and cognitive mind.
These two factors have shown to be directly correlated to children acting aggressively or
unpleasant, according to Hamama and Arazi. Children s aggression behavior includes three parts,
according to Hamama and Arazi. 1. A cognitive dimension hostility;2.an emotional dimension
anger; and 3. A behavioral dimension physical and verbal violence is how they defined aggressive
behavior. Those two factors are largely what influences children and their development, in Hamama
and Arazi s eyes(Hamama and Arazi). This article lays a great foundation for the explanation of

Summary Of The Angel
The angel Gabriel then reveals to Mary his true purpose in his visit to her. Don t be frightened,
Mary, for God has decided to bless you! You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to
name him Jesus (Luke 1:30 31). Gabriel then tells Mary that she will bear the Son of God and he
will reign over Israel forever. Gabriels final words are, For nothing is impossible with God (Luke
1: 37). Despite the awesome, unexpected, unbelievable spectacle before her, Mary was able to
accept that she would have a baby despite being a virgin. Mary responded, I am the Lord s
servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true
(Luke 1:38). In her willing acceptance of God s plan the Annunciationis confirmed and the
Incarnation of Christ occurs. It was at this moment that, The Word was made flesh, as the John s
Gospel puts it (John 1:14) (Williamson 20). This painting of the Annunciation , about 1430 40, is

The Importance Of Public Shaming
In Puritan times, shaming stayed within the boundaries of the town, but today the borders have
expanded to the entire world. Over time public shaming has changed for the worse; it used to be
just the people in the town shaming and the person feeling badly about themselves, but now the
entire world can know about it, and it leads to suicide. The three sources are The Scarlet
Letter (Nathaniel Hawthorne), The Price of Shame (Monica Lewinsky), and Is the Internet a
Mob without Consequences (Nick Bolton). Public shaming can affect a person s life terribly
through social, professional, and personal life.
First off public shaming negatively affects a person s life socially. In The Scarlet Lettereverybody
now sees Hester differently and judges her because she committed adultery. This person has
brought shame upon us all, and ought to die. Is there no law for it (Hawthorne 36).
This quote shows the severity of how they are judging her because they are saying she should die.
In The Price of Shame Monica Lewinsky talked about how her public shaming was the first online
shaming, and everyone now knows what she did, which was fall in love with the
President. Lewinsky states I was seen by many but known by few and The public humiliation was
excruciating, life was almost unbearable those two quotes show how her shaming went global and
she felt so bad about herself that she almost killed herself. In Is the Internet a Mob without
Consequences Bolton talks about how Justine

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT:
A LIFE OF LEADERSHIP Introduction The legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt is essentially
contested. To many, her role as First Lady, delegate to the UN, Democratic Party member,
humanitarian and social activist immortalized her as the conscience of the nation . However
critics deriding her as a gadfly and an unfit woman cite many flaws in her leadership capacity.
Roosevelt was never elected to office. She was reluctant to assume the responsibilities of being

It is easy to presume that that person is in the position they are in because of money, connections
or an extraordinary intellect. We may suppose that any adversity or problems that this type of
person has encountered are on another level to those that we face. Perhaps we don t imagine that
there were private obstacles to overcome, personality traits that needed adjustment or adaptation,
that private insecurities or personal failings had to be surmounted. It is simplest to assume that the
role of leadership was cut out for him/her alone. More often than not, one imagines that the leader
in an individual emerges early on in life, apparent from an early age: a bright child with above
average intelligence, active in all walks of life, successful in anything that he puts his/her hand to,
popular with peers and admired by elders. But nothing is that simple. Take Eleanor Roosevelt:
Eleanor Roosevelt was born into a rich elitist family. Her life was blessed with plenty, and she

The Act required mental health professionals to report patients they believe are likely to engage in

Douglas Mawson Contributions
I believe that Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity while contributing to science, he
suffered in many ways, including losing his friends and his sled dogs, he also had a lack of food
and energy, and lastly he had his soles of his feet were actually beginning to fall off. The seasoned
explorer, Douglas Mawsonhad suffered a lot through his race; he contributed to science, yet still
was able to survive. Henrietta Lacks had her cells taken for scientific purposes without permission
from her family. Phineas Gagesurvived an extreme dynamite accident which resulted in him
having a hole in his head made by an iron rod. Although you can make a good argument on who
endured the most adversity while contributing to science, Douglas Mawson did suffer a lot; and
there are many ways to support it. Mawson suffered in tons of ways while he was in the race.
The first way he suffered is that he lost his two close friends and his sled dogs which caused him
to grieve, this slowed him down in the race. In the article it states at 2 a.m. on January 8, Mertz
died in his sleep. Mawson buried his friend, still in the sleeping bag, beneath a mound of snow
blocks at atop. While he was busy grieving, it slowed him down a lot and distracted him from the
race. The second way he suffered is from lack of food. When you do not eat you get hungry and
start to lose energy, this just made him slow down in the race even more. The third way that he
suffered is that the soles of his feet were

Rhetorical Analysis of “Hurricane”
Rhetorical Analysis of Hurricane
Martin Luther King once said, There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither
safe, popular, or political, but because it is right. The song Hurricane , written by Bob Dylan
takes a stand and ignores what was safe, popular, and politically right during the 1960 s and 1970
s, in order to paint a picture of injustice. Dylan organizes the actual events of a man named Rubin
Hurricane Carter who was a middleweight boxer wrongfully accused and convicted of a double
homicide. Dylan narrates the song and uses his credibility as a rock star to reason with a broader
audience, while evoking the emotions of listeners by describing horrific events, prejudice, and ...

The judge made Rubin s witnesses drunkards from the slums. To the white folks who watched he
was a revolutionary bum and to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger. No one doubted that
he pulled the trigger. And though they could not produce the gun, the D.A. said he was the one
who did the deed and the all white jury agreed. In this verse Dylan is making a point that not only
were the Patterson police trying to make an example out of Hurricane but also the D.A. and the
overseeing judge. Keep in mind that during 1966 the United States was in the midst of a historical
transition as just two years earlier President Lyndon B. Johnson had signed the Civil Rights Act
outlawing all forms of discrimination against African Americans and women, including racial
segregation. The act created serious tension among whites and blacks as a majority of whites
refused to accept the change and the blacks were free to fight back against those who refused. In the
end the tension provoked many hostile riots and fights to breakout all over the U.S. The year 1966
also marked the start of the Black Power movement, which was maintained until the 1970 s. The
movement brought together black collective interest that consisted of racial pride, political goals,
establishment of other social institutions, and most importantly a continued defense against racial
oppression.

Letter From Birmingham Jail Thesis
On April 16, 1963, shortly after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was sent to jail, for public protests
against segregation, he wrote the Letters from the Birmingham Jail. The letters from the
Birmingham Jail played a monumental role during the Civil Rights Movement, and were crucial to
ending segregation in America. During his time in jail, Dr. King Jr, received letters from critics
who were questioning his methods and timing of his public protest during the Civil Rights
Movements. The letters from the Birmingham Jail were addressed to these critics. They defended
Dr King Jr s non violent protests, and criticized the cities disciplinary acts of violence toward

King Jr. continued to endure the hardships, he would soon find out that he would be rewarded
for his perseverance, when society was soon affected in a positive way. During the protests
police ordered violent acts to stop the protesters and many protesters were jailed. The violent
police acts were shown on television. The actions taken horrified many Americans (Marazani 3).
Since the unjust acts were finally being televised, citizens of the United States, were now actually
seeing and realizing the cruel actions that were being taken against protesters, by American
officers. Now that America was finally realizing the harsh acts against African American
protestors, Dr. King Jr s goal of ending segregation was almost accomplished by making the
problem known throughout America. Since all of America now knew about the brutality that
police were enforcing against African Americans, there was an outrage and an agreement was
reached and employers agreed to desegregate public places, and employ African Americans
(Birmingham 3). Therefore the demonstrations finally came to an end now that Dr King Jr s goal
had finally been achieved. Dr. King Jr. and the protests had successfully desegregated the city of
Birmingham, as well as achieving rights of equality for African Americans. However this would not

Lawrence s Sons and Lovers (1913) is a text that cries out for a psychoanalytic interpretation. One
of Freud s most famous theories is the Oedipus complex, which deals with a child s emerging

His relationship with his father is strained and he becomes jealous of him. He even asks his
mother not to sleep with the father anymore (Lawrence 215). Paul meets Miriam Leivers and
although he likes her, he repeats the same misogynistic behavior as William did with Lily. He
feels he would be betraying his mother by being with her. However, the idea that Paul is
interested in someone other than his mother shows an attempt to break the oedipal fixation he

She says, I can t bear it. I could let another woman but not her. She d leave me no room, not a bit

Miriam is reduced to friendship. He has to repress any romantic feelings that he might have for
her, so she will not replace his mother. Later in the novel, Paul does become physically intimate
with Miriam, but it is short lived because Paul will not marry her. This also shows that Paul suffers
from a fear of intimacy as he continues to remain emotionally detached from Miriam. Once again,
Paul succumbs

A Short Account Of Destruction Of The Indies By Bartolome...
For this essay I will be talking about the book A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies by
BartolomГ© de Las Casas. Whom wrote this to the King of Spain, Prince Philip II, in 1542 to
protest what was happening in the New World to the native people. I will be explaining many
things during this essay. The first thing I will go over is what the books tells us about the
relationship between Christianity and the colonialism. The second thing I will talk about is if it
was enough to denounce the atrocities against indigenous people. Next, if it is possible to separate
how De Las Casas might have been an outspoken critic of the Spanish s treatment of indigenous
people, and how he was still a part of a repressive institution. Finally, I... Show more content on

Getting their land taken away from them and getting killed, all while the natives were
exceptionally nice and welcoming of the Spaniards. So, in the end what played a bigger role?
Christianity or colonialism? This books tells us a lot about the relationship between Christianity
and colonialism. Originally, the Spaniards went to the New World to convert the natives to
Christianity but, they got lazy and greedy. De Las Casas stated that The reason the Christians
have murdered on such a vast scale and killed anyone and everyone in their way is purely and
simply greed (13). The Spaniards only cared about getting the gold and conquering the land. Of
course, they had the intention of converting all of the natives to Christianity at first but it was
easier to conquer and to just kill the natives in horrific ways to be able convert all the land to be
Christian rather than keeping the people and just converting the people. The land was easier to
convert than the people. The land was especially easy to conquer because the natives were such a
docile group of people and had such giving nature and were always welcoming with open arms.
The Spaniards took advantage of that characteristic of the natives. De Las Casas states how the
natives were submissive by saying, Their insatiable greed and overweening ambition know no
bounds; the land is fertile and rich, the inhabitants simple, forbearing and submissive (13). The

Sex Education in Public Schools
Sex education should be taught in public middle schools because: it decreases the chance of
sexual diseases and teenage pregnancies, it is needed in case of a parents absence or neglect, and
it also provides more knowledge about how sex works while debunking the myths surrounding
sexual intercourse, and it makes some want to set goals for relationships. People say sex education
encourages youth to engage in sexual activities rather than preventing sex. This is true; however,
studies show that when youth are taught about sexual education, they are more likely to make
better decisions.
Sexual education should be taught in middle school because it is around this time that youth
become sexually aware. Teaching them in middle school will ... Show more content on

Students aren t getting the information that they need from the right places. Talking to friends
or learning from social media is not the best way to learn about important topics such as sex.
Many students don t know how to prevent catching an STD because the information is not
available in school. There will always be peers who will badly influence others. That is why sex
education should be implemented in schools so the youth have a reliable non biased adult to
guide them into their own adulthood and are not just basing it off misconceptions. Myths and
misconceptions play a big role in why youth engage in sex without considering the effects it can
have. Many believe sex is an all access enjoyment activity because of the influence from outside
sources like music, movies, and television. However, I state again, that with proper knowledge
from both the pros and cons of engaging in sexual activity better choices can be made that will
potentially save lives of many young people today and saving them the embarrassment of
contracting an STD. When talking about sex, students are often embarrassed to open up about
how they feel about it or what they know about it. Some adults say sex is a personal topic and
should only be discussed with close family or close friends, therefore eliminates a class for sex
education. Kids nowadays feel that to be a

African American Criminalization Analysis
In this class we have learned about mass incarceration and the criminalization of black and brown
bodies throughout U.S. history. An early example of the criminalization of brown bodies can be
seen in Los Angeles when the Spanish Crown came and deemed Native Americans as lawless and
ungovernable. Then, later in time, we see the criminalization of black bodies in the South during
the Reconstruction Era. Laws and ideology that are motivated by colonialism and settler
colonialism, have helped put more black and brown bodies in prison and exploit them for labor
through convict lease systems. The criminalization of Native Americans, Hobos, and African
Americans served a political, social and economic purpose which helped colonialism and settler...

Hobo did not want to conform to settler colonialism, in attempting to permanently reside in Native
land, which led to them being outcasts in society. African Americans were ignored and attacked for
trying to integrate in society. It is evident that colonialism has played in the social construction of
race as well as a racialized global hierarchy and a system of punishment that criminalizes difference
(Bosworth/Flavin 13). It is evident that these populations were criminalized because they were
different and did not follow or assimilate to European culture. Incarcerating these two populations,
gave Anglo Saxons free and cheap labor in the construction of Los Angeles and many construction
projects in the South. This was useful to colonialism because Anglo Saxons and Spaniards could
take advantage of their free labor and keeping them away from them while excluding them from

Ivan Iv ( 1530-1584 )
Ivan IV (1530 1584) was proclaimed Grand Prince of Moscow in 1533 and from 1547 until his
death, the first to be crowned Tsar of Russia. During his reign, Ivan established autocracy, expanded
Russia s territory, and centralized its government. Ivan The Terrible earned his name through his
unstable personality, containing bloodlust, paranoia and violent outbursts that would ultimately
hurt his own country. On his deathbed, the Grand Prince of Moscow, Vasily III, told his wife,
Princess Elena Glinskaya, that his first son, Ivan IV, would inherit the throne after he dies and she
would serve as regent until he came of age, since he was three at the time. After his father s burial,
Ivan IV was proclaimed the true Sovereign of all Russia(Payne and Romanoff 24). After a
successful five year reign, Elena died surprisingly from either a heart attack or poison. Vasily
Shuisky took the regency and showed no sympathy to Ivan. He threw his mother s lover, Ivan
Obolensky, into prison and ordered his nurse, Agrafena Cheliadnina, into a nunnery. The feuding
boyar families of Belsky and Shuisky battled over power while Ivan was left neglected and
served only to be a figurehead to whomever was in control of the Regency. On December 29,
1943, the current Regent, Andrey Shuisky, was arrested on the orders of Ivan. Instead of
following the regular course of events that were supposed to happen after an arrest in Kremlin
Palace, Ivan ordered that his prisoner s fate should be decided by the

Criticism Of The Media In Gone Girl And The Braindead...
Are politicians or even newscasters trustworthy enough to present newsworthy material? Whether
it s about politics, an investigation, or a criminal trial, a person must critically analyze the
information that s being laid out in front of them before they should make any form of judgment
based off what is presented. Criticism of the media is an important aspect of Gone Girl and The
Braindead Megaphone. In both literary works, media is represented or described as subjective and
storytellingpursuant which can end up being dangerous in some situations, and is prevalent in the
real worlds postmodern broadcasting.
Subjectivism seems to be an issue with today s information that is being presented to the ill

The jury could have been swayed by the non objective facts that they might have seen Ellen present
on her broadcast.
Later in the book, Nick talks about his feelings and thoughts about Amy (Flynn 302 303). The
public may view it as true even though there isn t any actual evidence of Nick s feelings about
her (Flynn 302 303). These things aren t easy to physically prove so the public would have to
take Nicks word if they decide to believe him and see the situation from his viewpoint. In other
words, he s able to subjectively manipulate the situation to better his circumstances. The possible
outcome of this information being reported isn t necessarily destructive, even though it s
psychologically manipulating material. The presentation of this information would mainly have
an effect as to how the public may perceive Nick. Another characteristic of media that is
portrayed in Gone Girl and described in The Braindead Megaphone is Storytelling. George
Saunders defines storytelling as the idea that we shape or build our knowledge of a subject based
off a simulacrum or representation of it that is provided by the mass media (9). In The Braindead
Megaphone, the individual with the megaphone (anybody communicating to the outside world)
becomes a storyteller/simulacra builder for the happening (9). Storytelling could be destructive if the

Assessment Of Perineal Pain On Women Experience During The...
Assessment of Perineal Pain
Adequate and effective management of perineal pain begins with a comprehensive assessment
(Marcus et al, 2009; Breivikl et al, 2008; Dalton et al, 1999). However, Andrews et al, (2008) UK
based study concluded that there is no pain scale to date that has been developed to appropriately
and accurately assess the perineal pain that women experience during the postnatal period. This
begins to offer explanation as why up to 92% of new mothers endure perineal pain in the early
postpartum period (Macarthur and Macarthur, 2004).To further support these findings Way (2012)
discovered that women expect perineal pain following vaginal birth but under estimate the severity
of the pain. Women will experience high levels of pain before requesting analgesia as they attempt
to normalise the pain as a consequence of vaginal delivery (Swain and Dahlen, 2013). Macarthur
and Macarthur (2004) conclude that the current management of perineal pain is inadequate as the
use of analgesia is not standardised.
Both Macarthur and Macarthur (2004) and Andrews et al, (2008) used a prospective cohort
research design to obtain their data. The sample population that was needed to ensure that the
results produced were statistically significant was, therefore, larger (Rees, 2011). Macarthur and
Macarthur (2004) used a sample size of four hundred and forty seven women from Toronto, Canada,
and Andrews et al, (2008) included two hundred and forty one women from London, England. The

Imprisonment and Social Control Essay
Imprisonment is one of the primary ways in which social control may be achieved; the Sage
Dictionary of Criminology defines social control as a concept used to describe all the ways in which
conformity may be achieved. Throughout time imprisonment and its ideas around social control
have varied. Imprisonment has not always been used for punishment, nor has it always thought
about the prisoners themselves. However when looking at imprisonment it is important to consider
the new penology. Therefore, it needs to be clear what the new penology is. The new penology is
said, not to be about punishing individuals or about rehabilitating them, but about identifying and
managing unruly groups in society. It is concerned with the managerial... Show more content on

Throughout the years, the use of imprisonment has varied, along with its influences of society. It is
thought that although prisons have been around since the thirteenth century, prisons as we know
them now to be have only been around for the last three centuries. The first uses of prisons were
not seen as a form of punishment instead they were used as a way of making people do something.
People would be held in prison until they paid their debts, or awaiting trial and then leading up to
their sentence. McGowen (1995) suggests that from the early 1700s bridewells a house of
correction have existed, however at that time being used merely for vagrants and drunks. At the
end of the sixteenth century there was a shift in punishment to imprisonment, along with this came
a new, more humane idea of reform. Criminals would spend their days of prison carrying out hard
labour. However after the American Revolution, imprisonment took a step back and there was
another change. There was mass overcrowding within the prison service and although the death
penalty was still being used it was a symbol of the power of the state. Therefore, an everyday way
of dealing with offenders would be transportation to the colonies, being either Australia or America.
It was with the work of Beccaria and Bentham that saw a change in imprisonment. Jeremy Bentham
(1748 1832) insisted crime prevention was the only way

Advantages Of Traditional Market Research Methods
Lisel Douglas Argumentative Essay 2014 11 04 (Title) There is no doubt that traditional market
research methods have proven themselves to be valuable in helping businesses to determine the
next steps in, and governmental organizations study the population over which it governs.
Traditional market research methods such as surveys in person, mail, telephone, and now,
online, have proven to be reliable means of gathering information about a market. Qualitative
methods, like focus groups, and in depth interviews have also been accepted as reliable means
for collecting a certain kind of information about a market. However, according to the AAPOR,
we are entering a new era, where traditional survey research may play a less dominant role.
Businesses and organizations may look more to Big Data and social media research for answers
to their questions. This paper is not a discussion of the merits of traditional methods vs. newer
methods, from an either/or perspective. The intention is to explain why social media as a
potentially reliable market research method, should not be dismissed due perceived pitfalls. There
are many areas of concern, but this paper will address only three: measurement challenges, wrong
answers, and quality. The AAPOR states that, the reasons to consider social media in public opinion
and survey research are no different than those of any alternative method as essentially the ultimate
concern of market research is answering research questions, and

  • 3. Families On The Home Front During Wwii Families on the Home Front during WWII by Ewa Bieciuk HIST 2200 U.S. History Since 1877 Summer 2015 Prof. Hardin September 1st, 1939 is a day that changed the course of history. Lives were lost, families ripped apart, towns destroyed, and jobs were created. World War II had just begun with the majority of the main countries in our world participating in the war that would ultimately kill millions of soldiers and civilians. Two years later, on December 8th, 1941 after the Japanese surprisingly attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war fully. During this time, the U.S. enlisted the help of the entire nation; soldiers, factory workers, nurses, and doctors were required both overseas and on the home front. While many men were sent to fight over seas or prepare at combat training on bases in the U.S., factories and other business were left with a shortage of workers. World War II encouraged, or more accurately, forced, women and wives to leave their homes to begin working. A familiar image that many Americans are familiar with is of the women flexing announcing We Can Do It! , which is greatly recognized as a symbol of the female presence in the workforce. Young adults dropped out of school to help out in numerous ways. The amount of children working also increased greatly. Desperate measures to save money and help in the wartime effort lead to many drastic changes in roles and lifestyles of American families on the home front. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Does Heller Use Dialogue In Catch 22 Use of Language and Dialogue Catch 22 Catch 22 is probably best discussed in terms of its language. The prose style Heller employs is original and distinctive, appropriate and well implemented (Pearson 277). One application of that prose style is dialogue; Heller uses dialogue to manifest the themes of the novel. Some of the themes best shown in the dialogue of the characters are Heller s hatred of war, and his perceived idiocy in military and in bureaucracy. Scattered throughout the book are several dialogues which share numerous characteristics. Some particular conversations are especially demonstrative of these elements. Heller uses these dialogues to communicate his ideas to the reader. In chapter XXXVI, several military ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What crime? We don t know yet, said the colonel. But we re going to find out. And we sure know it s very serious (373). Heller s governmental agents are illogical to either a subhuman or to asuperhuman extent. In another instance, an undercover C.I.D. man fails toconsider the possibility that the culprit who incorrectly edits letters would sign a nameother than his own. Time after time these agent display profound disregard for the highercranial facilities. In the same way that the bureaucratic thought process is convoluted, governmental action (or inaction) is also often senseless. Often the very nature of an actionprecludes itself: this sort of situation crops up during the interrogation, for instance, when one of the military officers asks the chaplain for a handwriting sample in order tocompare the sample to a letter. When the handwriting sample fails to match that of the letter, the officer concludes that of course of course! the chaplain is fakinghis handwriting: I can t tell you how disappointed I am in you. For what? persisted the chaplain more frantically. What have I done? For this, replied the major, and, with an air of disillusioned disgust, tossed down on the table the pad on which the chaplain had signed his name. This isn t your handwriting. • 5. Oil Spill Response Essay An introduction of the characteristics of the ecosytem community Understanding various ecosystems allow us to better understand the impact in which the deep horizon spill had within each type of ecosystem. The oil spill occurred around three specific types of ecosystems including the coastal areas, the freshwater areas, and the upland areas. The coastal areas often contain salty marshes which can be harsh on many plants. These coastal areas also include tropical coral reefs, sand dunes, and maritime forests. The freshwater areas include rivers and springs, lakes, swamps and freshwater marshes while the upland areas have pine and Flatwoods, temperate forests, and scrub (Par. 5). Each of these ecosystems can provide a different mixtures of challenges ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example is provided by the USGS Oil Spill Response, which utilized surveys to gather data on coastal impacts, wildlife issues, and many other related issues from the oil spill. The USGS continues to mobilize equipment and personnel to gather scientific data and information on the environmental impacts of the oil spill to affected coastal habitats (Par. 2). Based on this research, researchers have discovered that even after four years after the incident, the area still shows signs of major environmental damage. There have been many signs, researchers say, that several animals and other living species in the Gulf of Mexico have experienced exceptional loss of life since the spill (Al, 2014, Par. 1). The specific species from data sampling include: ottlenose dolphins, red snapper, blue crab, Atlantic Bluefin tuna, gulf killifish, sperm whales, sea turtles, white pelicans, seaside sparrows, eastern oysters, coral, common loon, brown pelicans and small marine creatures called foraminifera (Par. 5). The United States is a country that has some of the lowest voter turnouts in history, and unlike Australia, the USA doesn t make voting mandatory. About 48 to 57% of citizens normally participate in the presidential election voting but in 2016 many American s decided to opt out lowering the voter turnoutto a mere 55% of the American population. When American s didn t vote that decision most likely came due to the fact that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were both two of the most disliked presidential candidates in the past 30 years. • 7. Character Analysis Of A Problem By Anton Chekhov intro / p1 apathetic / p2 irresponsible/stubborn / p3 miscreant/ Characters are ultimately defined as the driving forces throughout various stories; therefore, characters possess diverse traits and emotions that motivate them to further a plot through their dialogue and action. Furthermore, Anton Chekhov centers his short story, A Problem , around a delinquent youth named Sasha Uskov. As a character who is arguably quite complex, Chekhov emphasizes these elements of characterization with a certain depth that encourages readers to distinguish Sasha and Ivan, his uncle, as static and dynamic characters respectively. Sasha is undeniably avaricious, whether it be due to the societal influence in Russia during the late 1800s, or a personal, intense yearning for material wealth. This materialistic nature can be elaborated upon by his actions throughout the story. For example, A Problem is entirely constructed on the situation Sasha has imposed on the family by forging a promissory note and furthering his debt. Moreover, Sasha s obstinance appears throughout his dialogue, which denies any relation to criminality as a whole, belaying that he is either stubborn or close minded. However, his intricacy entirely manifests itself toward the conclusion. Despite Sasha remaining as a miscreant throughout the entire story, he does acknowledge his long needed self revelation that he is indeed a criminal. Therefore, it can be deduced that Sasha is not entirely as static as Chekhov may initially want his readers to believe. Chekhov s clever characterization portrays him as a stubborn criminal, rightfully so, but additionally implies his complex nature as a confused youth who firmly believed he was not a criminal and has been influenced by his peers who are clearly committing the very same crimes. From the very beginning, Chekhov exposes his readers to Sasha s apathetic behavior and establishes that Sasha is beyond all possible redemption. Moreover, Chekhov made it a point to frequently direct attention to Sasha s indifference through his well written characterization. Chekhov, in reference to Sasha, revealed, He felt neither terror, shame, nor depression, but only weariness and inward emptiness (page 3). This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Sleeping Beauty, A Paraphilia Sleeping Beauty, a fairy tale so rampant with sexual abuse that it actually has a word named after it. Somnophilia, also known as the sleeping beauty syndrome is a paraphilia in which an individual becomes sexually aroused by someone who is asleep or unconscious (this can be considered rape). Can any other fairytale boast to having a fetish named after them? Original versions of fairy tales often overlooked a key aspect that is considered as one of the most important words in today s society. Consent. Consent is key. The distinction between the words yes and no have been clearly defined. How have the modern adaptations of fairy tales have introduced consent in their retelling? I ll be focusing on how the idea of consent has been introduced in recent adaptations of Sleeping Beautyand Snow White and how they ve evolved from their original versions. Basile s Sun, Moon and Talia, the oldest version of Sleeping Beauty is a prime example of non consensual sexual activity. Talia (Sleeping Beauty) having pricked her finger on flax falls lifeless. Her father, the King, sits her on the throne and leaves, unable to stand the sight of his daughter in such a state. A falcon belonging to a King hunting nearby flies into the abandoned castle and the King in search of his bird stumbles upon Talia s lifeless body. Colorado Water Shortage Essay Colorado s Water Shortage; a Localized Problem with a National Salience The Issue at Hand The State of Colorado has suffered from a water shortage in recent years; a difficult situation which is easily visible when viewing the quickly shortening length of the Colorado River. Lake Mead, for example, is roughly 130 feet lower than it once was, marked by the stained rock which towers above the current water level. The river has become a perfect symbol of what happens when we ask too much of a limited resource: it disappears. In fact, the Colorado no longer regularly reaches the sea (Zielinski, 2010). Legislation was implemented early on to address this issue, though the results were (perhaps not surprisingly) rather unanticipated, regarding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The upper basin states (including Colorado) were allocated a much greater percentage of the water than the lower basin states, while the upper basin states were developing at a much slower rate than those in the lower basin, notably California. It goes without saying that this legislation from the early twentieth century is not going to be sufficient in coming years as the development of these regions has progressed at a much faster rate than originally anticipated, and it is the responsibility of state and federal governments, water management companies, as well as appeals from farmers and non farming residents alike to come to an agreement on how to apportion water and how to implement secondary hydration plans due to the rapidly declining resource that the once magnificent Colorado River was able to supply us ... In the words of Jefferson, this is how much he loved his macaronni machine: The best maccaroni in Italy is made with a particular sort of flour called Semola, in Naples: but in almost every shop a different sort of flour is commonly used; for, provided the flour be of a good quality, and not ground extremely fine, it will always do very well. A paste is made with flour, water and less yeast than is used for making bread. This paste is then put, by little at a time, viz. about 5. or 6. lb. each time into a round iron box ABC, the under part of which is perforated with holes, through which the paste, when pressed by the screw DEF, comes out, and forms the Maccaroni g.g.g. which, when sufficiently long, are cut and spread to dry. The screw is turned by a lever inserted into the hole K, of which there are 4. or 6. It is evident that on turning the screw one way, the cylindrical part F. which fits the iron box or mortar perfectly well, must press upon the paste and must force it out of the holes. Sherlock There always seems to be a debate on which portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is better.; the movie with Robert Downey Jr. or the show with Benedict Cumberbatch? The movie and show are based on Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but are different in aspects such as actor portrayals, levels of complexity, and main character deaths. These aspects make the show better than the movie. Both shows have relatively the same characters, but the portrayals vary greatly. Watson takes care of and tries to keep Sherlock out of trouble, but is almost always ready to go on a case and join in on the troublesome game. He balances Sherlock s sociopath tendencies but brings his own wonder to the show. Watson makes sure he is heard and is the voice of reason. Additionally, Andrew Scott as Moriarty is perfect. He has the psychopathic behavior and is very conniving and mysterious. Scott makes him unnerving because you know he is a master criminal and will not hesitate to kill people. Yet he still keeps the character relatable. Scott makes Moriarty a serious psychotic man but brings slight comedy to the part by not being serious. The show is better than the movie because the character portrayals are much better because they are more relatable and overall intriguing. The development of the characters is detailed but leaves enough out to keep it clouded with mystery. On top of a better portrayal of characters, the show has a better level of complexity. In the movie, the Moriarty case was complex and difficult to follow. The case was difficult because Sherlock is going against someone on his intelligence level, so the audience struggles to keep up. Also, having a backstory with the gypsy that helped throughout the movie added to the plot but was more of a distraction. The ending was not that complex though. The impending murder kept you guessing, but not the death of Moriarty. James Moriarty on the show ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During his time in jail, Dr. King Jr, received letters from critics who were questioning his methods and timing of his public protest during the Civil Rights Movements. The letters from the Birmingham Jail were addressed to these critics. They defended Dr King Jr s non violent protests, and criticized the cities disciplinary acts of violence toward protesters. The Letters from the Birmingham Jail had a heavy influence on segregation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... King Jr. continued to endure the hardships, he would soon find out that he would be rewarded for his perseverance, when society was soon affected in a positive way. During the protests police ordered violent acts to stop the protesters and many protesters were jailed. The violent police acts were shown on television. The actions taken horrified many Americans (Marazani 3). Since the unjust acts were finally being televised, citizens of the United States, were now actually seeing and realizing the cruel actions that were being taken against protesters, by American officers. Now that America was finally realizing the harsh acts against African American protestors, Dr. King Jr s goal of ending segregation was almost accomplished by making the problem known throughout America. Since all of America now knew about the brutality that police were enforcing against African Americans, there was an outrage and an agreement was reached and employers agreed to desegregate public places, and employ African Americans (Birmingham 3). Therefore the demonstrations finally came to an end now that Dr King Jr s goal had finally been achieved. Dr. King Jr. and the protests had successfully desegregated the city of Birmingham, as well as achieving rights of equality for African Americans. However this would not have been possible without the Letters from the Birmingham ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Sons and Lovers Sons and Lovers: A Psychoanalytic Criticism Psychoanalysis is a psychological approach that focuses on the concepts of Sigmund Freud and helps us to understand human behavior. D.H. Lawrence s Sons and Lovers (1913) is a text that cries out for a psychoanalytic interpretation. One of Freud s most famous theories is the Oedipus complex, which deals with a child s emerging sexuality. Freud used the story of Sophocles Oedipus Rex to help illustrate his theory. In the story, Oedipus unwittingly kills his father and marries his mother. According to Freud, all male children form an erotic attachment to their mother and are jealous of the relationship the father has with the mother. The male child fears he will be castrated by the father so he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His relationship with his father is strained and he becomes jealous of him. He even asks his mother not to sleep with the father anymore (Lawrence 215). Paul meets Miriam Leivers and although he likes her, he repeats the same misogynistic behavior as William did with Lily. He feels he would be betraying his mother by being with her. However, the idea that Paul is interested in someone other than his mother shows an attempt to break the oedipal fixation he has. But, the mother foils this attempt by making him feel guilty for wanting to be with Miriam. She says, I can t bear it. I could let another woman but not her. She d leave me no room, not a bit of room. And I ve never you know Paul I ve never had a husband, not really (Lawrence 212). This same behavior the mother exhibited with William, by being jealous of his female companions, is now being inflicted on Paul. She reinforces the Oedipus complex that is within Paul by suffocating him and in a subtle way asking him to replace her husband. Paul s relationship with Miriam is reduced to friendship. He has to repress any romantic feelings that he might have for her, so she will not replace his mother. Later in the novel, Paul does become physically intimate with Miriam, but it is short lived because Paul will not marry her. This also shows that Paul suffers from a fear of intimacy as he continues to remain emotionally detached from Miriam. Once again, Paul succumbs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. A Short Account Of Destruction Of The Indies By Bartolome... For this essay I will be talking about the book A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies by BartolomГ© de Las Casas. Whom wrote this to the King of Spain, Prince Philip II, in 1542 to protest what was happening in the New World to the native people. I will be explaining many things during this essay. The first thing I will go over is what the books tells us about the relationship between Christianity and the colonialism. The second thing I will talk about is if it was enough to denounce the atrocities against indigenous people. Next, if it is possible to separate how De Las Casas might have been an outspoken critic of the Spanish s treatment of indigenous people, and how he was still a part of a repressive institution. Finally, I... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Getting their land taken away from them and getting killed, all while the natives were exceptionally nice and welcoming of the Spaniards. So, in the end what played a bigger role? Christianity or colonialism? This books tells us a lot about the relationship between Christianity and colonialism. Originally, the Spaniards went to the New World to convert the natives to Christianity but, they got lazy and greedy. De Las Casas stated that The reason the Christians have murdered on such a vast scale and killed anyone and everyone in their way is purely and simply greed (13). The Spaniards only cared about getting the gold and conquering the land. Of course, they had the intention of converting all of the natives to Christianity at first but it was easier to conquer and to just kill the natives in horrific ways to be able convert all the land to be Christian rather than keeping the people and just converting the people. The land was easier to convert than the people. The land was especially easy to conquer because the natives were such a docile group of people and had such giving nature and were always welcoming with open arms. The Spaniards took advantage of that characteristic of the natives. De Las Casas states how the natives were submissive by saying, Their insatiable greed and overweening ambition know no bounds; the land is fertile and rich, the inhabitants simple, forbearing and submissive (13). Sex Education in Public Schools Sex education should be taught in public middle schools because: it decreases the chance of sexual diseases and teenage pregnancies, it is needed in case of a parents absence or neglect, and it also provides more knowledge about how sex works while debunking the myths surrounding sexual intercourse, and it makes some want to set goals for relationships. People say sex education encourages youth to engage in sexual activities rather than preventing sex. Students aren t getting the information that they need from the right places. Talking to friends or learning from social media is not the best way to learn about important topics such as sex. Many students don t know how to prevent catching an STD because the information is not available in school. There will always be peers who will badly influence others. That is why sex education should be implemented in schools so the youth have a reliable non biased adult to guide them into their own adulthood and are not just basing it off misconceptions. Myths and misconceptions play a big role in why youth engage in sex without considering the effects it can have. Many believe sex is an all access enjoyment activity because of the influence from outside sources like music, movies, and television. However, I state again, that with proper knowledge from both the pros and cons of engaging in sexual activity better choices can be made that will potentially save lives of many young people today and saving them the embarrassment of contracting an STD. When talking about sex, students are often embarrassed to open up about how they feel about it or what they know about it. Some adults say sex is a personal topic and should only be discussed with close family or close friends, therefore eliminates a class for sex education. Kids nowadays feel that to be a ... An early example of the criminalization of brown bodies can be seen in Los Angeles when the Spanish Crown came and deemed Native Americans as lawless and ungovernable. Then, later in time, we see the criminalization of black bodies in the South during the Reconstruction Era. Laws and ideology that are motivated by colonialism and settler colonialism, have helped put more black and brown bodies in prison and exploit them for labor through convict lease systems. It is evident that colonialism has played in the social construction of race as well as a racialized global hierarchy and a system of punishment that criminalizes difference (Bosworth/Flavin 13). It is evident that these populations were criminalized because they were different and did not follow or assimilate to European culture. Incarcerating these two populations, gave Anglo Saxons free and cheap labor in the construction of Los Angeles and many construction projects in the South. This was useful to colonialism because Anglo Saxons and Spaniards could take advantage of their free labor and keeping them away from them while excluding them from their ... During his reign, Ivan established autocracy, expanded Russia s territory, and centralized its government. Ivan The Terrible earned his name through his unstable personality, containing bloodlust, paranoia and violent outbursts that would ultimately hurt his own country. On his deathbed, the Grand Prince of Moscow, Vasily III, told his wife, Princess Elena Glinskaya, that his first son, Ivan IV, would inherit the throne after he dies and she would serve as regent until he came of age, since he was three at the time. After his father s burial, Ivan IV was proclaimed the true Sovereign of all Russia(Payne and Romanoff 24). After a successful five year reign, Elena died surprisingly from either a heart attack or poison. Vasily Shuisky took the regency and showed no sympathy to Ivan. He threw his mother s lover, Ivan Obolensky, into prison and ordered his nurse, Agrafena Cheliadnina, into a nunnery. The feuding boyar families of Belsky and Shuisky battled over power while Ivan was left neglected and served only to be a figurehead to whomever was in control of the Regency. Whether it s about politics, an investigation, or a criminal trial, a person must critically analyze the information that s being laid out in front of them before they should make any form of judgment based off what is presented. Criticism of the media is an important aspect of Gone Girl and The Braindead Megaphone. In both literary works, media is represented or described as subjective and storytellingpursuant which can end up being dangerous in some situations, and is prevalent in the real worlds postmodern broadcasting. Later in the book, Nick talks about his feelings and thoughts about Amy (Flynn 302 303). The public may view it as true even though there isn t any actual evidence of Nick s feelings about her (Flynn 302 303). These things aren t easy to physically prove so the public would have to take Nicks word if they decide to believe him and see the situation from his viewpoint. In other words, he s able to subjectively manipulate the situation to better his circumstances. The possible outcome of this information being reported isn t necessarily destructive, even though it s psychologically manipulating material. The presentation of this information would mainly have an effect as to how the public may perceive Nick. Another characteristic of media that is portrayed in Gone Girl and described in The Braindead Megaphone is Storytelling. George Saunders defines storytelling as the idea that we shape or build our knowledge of a subject based off a simulacrum or representation of it that is provided by the mass media (9). • 48. Assessment Of Perineal Pain On Women Experience During The... Assessment of Perineal Pain Adequate and effective management of perineal pain begins with a comprehensive assessment (Marcus et al, 2009; Breivikl et al, 2008; Dalton et al, 1999). However, Andrews et al, (2008) UK based study concluded that there is no pain scale to date that has been developed to appropriately and accurately assess the perineal pain that women experience during the postnatal period. This begins to offer explanation as why up to 92% of new mothers endure perineal pain in the early postpartum period (Macarthur and Macarthur, 2004).To further support these findings Way (2012) discovered that women expect perineal pain following vaginal birth but under estimate the severity of the pain. Women will experience high levels of pain before requesting analgesia as they attempt to normalise the pain as a consequence of vaginal delivery (Swain and Dahlen, 2013). Macarthur and Macarthur (2004) conclude that the current management of perineal pain is inadequate as the use of analgesia is not standardised. Both Macarthur and Macarthur (2004) and Andrews et al, (2008) used a prospective cohort research design to obtain their data. The sample population that was needed to ensure that the results produced were statistically significant was, therefore, larger (Rees, 2011). Imprisonment and Social Control Essay Imprisonment is one of the primary ways in which social control may be achieved; the Sage Dictionary of Criminology defines social control as a concept used to describe all the ways in which conformity may be achieved. Throughout time imprisonment and its ideas around social control have varied. Imprisonment has not always been used for punishment, nor has it always thought about the prisoners themselves. However when looking at imprisonment it is important to consider the new penology. Therefore, it needs to be clear what the new penology is. The new penology is said, not to be about punishing individuals or about rehabilitating them, but about identifying and managing unruly groups in society. It is concerned with the managerial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the years, the use of imprisonment has varied, along with its influences of society. It is thought that although prisons have been around since the thirteenth century, prisons as we know them now to be have only been around for the last three centuries. The first uses of prisons were not seen as a form of punishment instead they were used as a way of making people do something. People would be held in prison until they paid their debts, or awaiting trial and then leading up to their sentence. McGowen (1995) suggests that from the early 1700s bridewells a house of correction have existed, however at that time being used merely for vagrants and drunks. At the end of the sixteenth century there was a shift in punishment to imprisonment, along with this came a new, more humane idea of reform. Criminals would spend their days of prison carrying out hard labour. However after the American Revolution, imprisonment took a step back and there was another change. There was mass overcrowding within the prison service and although the death penalty was still being used it was a symbol of the power of the state. Therefore, an everyday way of dealing with offenders would be transportation to the colonies, being either Australia or America. It was with the work of Beccaria and Bentham that saw a change in imprisonment. Jeremy Bentham (1748 1832) insisted crime prevention was the only way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Advantages Of Traditional Market Research Methods Lisel Douglas Argumentative Essay 2014 11 04 (Title) There is no doubt that traditional market research methods have proven themselves to be valuable in helping businesses to determine the next steps in, and governmental organizations study the population over which it governs. Traditional market research methods such as surveys in person, mail, telephone, and now, online, have proven to be reliable means of gathering information about a market. Qualitative methods, like focus groups, and in depth interviews have also been accepted as reliable means for collecting a certain kind of information about a market. However, according to the AAPOR, we are entering a new era, where traditional survey research may play a less dominant role. Businesses and organizations may look more to Big Data and social media research for answers to their questions. This paper is not a discussion of the merits of traditional methods vs. newer methods, from an either/or perspective. The intention is to explain why social media as a potentially reliable market research method, should not be dismissed due perceived pitfalls. There are many areas of concern, but this paper will address only three: measurement challenges, wrong answers, and quality. The AAPOR states that, the reasons to consider social media in public opinion and survey research are no different than those of any alternative method as essentially the ultimate concern of market research is answering research questions, and ...
