A. Review (Prayer and Checking of
attendance)
Before we proceed, let us have
first a recap of our past lesson.
Who among you can still
remember?
That is right. What are the
different properties of a well-
written text?
Well done! It seems that you
have all mastered our last topic.
Our last topic was Properties of a Well
Written Text, Ma’am.
Unity, Coherence and Cohesion,
Organization, Language Use and Mechanics.
B. Motivation So this morning, we will be
discussing a new topic. To begin
let us have our first activity.
But before we do that, let me
distribute first the activity sheets
for today’s class.
There will be two sets of activity
sheets.
The first two pieces of paper is
labeled AGREE and DISAGREE.
I will be reading aloud 5 different
statements and see if you agree
or disagree to these statements
by raising the paper with the
corresponding label. Got it?
5 Statements:
1. There is a community of
Bukidnons at Sitio Sibato,
Barangay Guimbala-on in Silay
City.
2. Scarcity of food in the
mountains of Panay, is one of
the reasons why the
Bukidnon’s went to their
neighboring island which is
Negros.
3. The rituals of Bukidnons
include chanting, singing, rain
dance, mimicry and offering
of produce to the spirits of
nature.
4. The Bukidnons is a group of
indigenous people that is
recognized by the National
Commission on Indigenous
Peoples (NCIP).
5. For the Bukidnons respect for
the elders and women was
given priority.
All of these statements are
related to the Bukidnons which
are the indigenous people here
in Guimbala-on, and the
statements I have provided are
all argumentative in nature,
meaning some people may agree
and some may disagree.
Yes, maam!

Please read the statement. EXTRAORDINARY CLAIMS REQUIRE
EXTRAORDINARY EVIDENCE.
C. Presentation So what do you think is our topic
for today?
That is right to be exact it is
identifying and formulating
claims.
Please read the objectives for
today’s class.
CLAIMS
At the end of this lesson, you are expected
to:
1. Differentiate the types of claims;
2. classify statements according to its
type;
3. formulate claims of fact, policy and
value.
D. Unlocking the
difficulties
VOCABULARY
 Affirmative/pro
 Negative/con
 Counterclaims
 Evidence
 Debate
 Proposition
- the side that supports the issue or topic
- the side that is against the topic
- are opposing arguments
- Are supporting materials for arguments.
- A formal discussion on a particular topic in a
public meeting.
-a statement that affirms or denies something
E. Activity What is a claim?
Actually, there are three types of
claims. These are also called
propositions of Fact, Value and
Policy in your text.
1.Claim of Fact. - Asserts that
the condition has existed, exists
or will exist.
Claim of Fact - the statements
that report, describe, predict or
make casual claims.
Please read the example.
2.Claim of Value - Makes a
judgment: expresses approval
or disapproval about
something; attempts to show
that something is wrong or
-It is an assertion of the truth of something,
typically one that is disputed or in doubt.
Claim of Fact.
E.g.
1. Although it has been largely forgotten,
the flu epidemic of 1918-1919 was one of
the most devastating epidemics of all time.
2. Lumberjacking is an extremely dangerous
occupation.
3. Global warming is a threat to all mankind.
Claim of Value
E.g.
1. Military boot camp is a degrading and
humiliating experience.
right, moral/ immoral, beautiful
or ugly.
Claim of Value – statements
that advance judgments about
morality, beauty, merit, or
wisdom.
Please read the example.
3.Claim of Policy - Argues that
something should or should not
be done, believed, banned;
argues for a course of action.
Claim of Policy – Statements
that urge that an action be
taken or discounted.
Please read the example.
Do you have any questions?
For our next activity, I will be
grouping you into 2. Then, you
will have to choose one
representative. Representatives
please come forward. Each
group will have a set of claims.
You will have to classify whether
it’s a claim of fact policy or value.
One you are done paste your
work on the board. This activity
is for only five minutes.
Reminding everyone to maintain
social distancing while
performing this activity.
So let’s begin.
2. It is immoral to practice premarital sex.
3. The hunting of animals is a barbaric
practice.
Claim of Policy
E.g.
1. All students should wear complete school
uniforms.
2. The process for acquiring drivers license
in the Philippines should be changed.
3. The age to buy tobacco and alcoholic
products should be raised to 21 years old.
Yes or None.
Let us check your work.
Alright, now since you are now
able to classify claims. Let us
now check your ability to
formulate your own claims.
Are you ready?
This will be a group activity.
There will be two groups.
Choose one person who will
write down your formulated
claims in the pieces of paper I
distributed earlier. Each group
will have to make one claim for
each type of claim.
Is it clear?
Let’s check your point of views
regarding surrogacy.
But first let us have a quick
discussion as to what is
surrogacy.
Have you heard of this word?
Surrogacy involves a woman
agreeing to carry a baby for
someone else. After the baby is
born the birth mother gives
custody and guardianship to the
intended parent or parents.
There are 5 steps in surrogacy.
Step 1- Consulting surrogacy
professionals.
Step 2- Selecting a surrogate.
Step 3- Signing the contract.
Step 4- Going through the
medical process.
Correct Answer:
Yes ma’am.
Yes ma’am.
Answer may vary.
Step 5- Legal parentage
Again, what is surrogacy?
Very good.
Now there are four types of
surrogacy.
TRADITIONAL SURROGACY
-the surrogate contributes the
egg while the sperm is done
through intrauterine
insemination from the intended
father.
GESTATIONAL SURROGACY
-the surrogate does not
contribute the egg. The genetic
material is from the intended
parents.
COMMERCIAL SURROGACY
-surrogates are paid for carrying
the pregnancy plus she receives
a reimbursement for all the
expenses.
ALTRUISTIC SURROGACY
-there is no payment given to
the surrogate as a reward.
However, surrogates can be
financially compensated in
recognition of the expenses
derived from the pregnancy like
prenatal visits and laboratory
fees.
So, how many types of surrogacy
are there?
What are those?
It involves a woman agreeing to carry a
baby for someone else. After the baby is
born the birth mother gives custody and
guardianship to the intended parent or
parents.
Four.
TRADITIONAL SURROGACY
GESTATIONAL SURROGACY
COMMERCIAL SURROGACY
ALTRUISTIC SURROGACY
Very good. That is right.
Please read the statement at the
bottom.
Alright, so knowing all these
about surrogacy please make
your own claims together with
your group. I will give you five
mins to formulate your own
claims. Write it down on the
piece of paper intended for this
activity. Afterwards, post it on
the board. Ok?
So, your five mins starts now.
Make sure to maintain social
distancing while doing this
activity.
(after 5 mins.)
Alright, time is up. Post your
work now on the board.
At the moment there are no laws governing
surrogacy in the Philippines.
Yes ma’am.
(Students will post their work.)
F. Analysis So, let us read and analyze the
work of each group.
Each group please read your
own work.
What can you say about the
work of group1 & group 2?
Are they correct?
If all are correct:
Good job everyone! All the
examples were correct.
If not:
Correct the work of the students
(Students will read their own work by
group.)
Answers may vary
Answers may vary
G. Abstraction Understanding all these
concepts how are these claims
different from each other?
How are these claims similar to
each other?
Very good!
-answers may vary
-answers may vary
H. Application At this point, classify as to what
type of claims are the following
statements. Just say F for Fact,
V for Value and P for Policy.
Copy?
Yes, ma’am copy!
Ready? We are ready.
Answers:
1. P
2. V
3. F
4. P
5. F
6. V
7. P
