Response To Male Dominance In Axis, By Alice Munro
Male dominance is a persisting issue in society, and it has been for a very long time. In response to
male dominance came feminism, the advocacy of women s rights on the ground of the equality of the
sexes (Oxford Living Dictionaries). Through a feminist lens, Alice Munro s short story, Axis provides
a strong portrayal of the injustices that a feminist would stand for. It illustrates a sense of male
dominance, as well as female responses to male dominance in an older form of Canadian society.
These concepts are revealed through various situations in the story that address the lack of respect for
the education of a female, the disregard of a woman s opinion, and the idea that females have adjusted
to their position in society. The story entails many significant representations of how women lack
various forms of power due to male dominance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this time frame, beauty and looks were not believed to go together (Munro 1). Grace and Avie are
two farm girls attending university, male members of their families had joked that they ought to be
able to nab somebody (1). These jokes were formed upon the appearance of the girls. The mentality of
the society proves that the intellect of a female is dismissed and disrespected as beauty holds more
value. Females were expected to go to university in order to find a husband oppose to furthering their
education, while an educated male is respected, proving that their education was not of value. These
theories presented in society result in females losing their power to contribute to bettering their future

My Reflection Of The Humanities And Communications Program
The Humanities and Communications Program was a mystery to me when I first heard about it. Many
of my friends were in the Math/Science Program, so I heard many stories about projects and activities
done there. I only knew a few people in the Humanities Program, so when I got the acceptance letter, I
had a mix of emotions. I had worry and fear along with joy, but I was tensed about the people I would
meet and the different projects I would have to do. The worry and fear ebbed away after I met my
classmates. There were students from incredibly broad backgrounds whom I would be working with. I
was surprised when the acuity of my peers and the vast amount of ideas they had. As I went through
sixth and seventh grade, I formed strong friendships with my peers. Although the application process
and program at first were daunting, I m glad I decided to choose the center program rather than going
to my home middle school.
I first heard of the middle school magnet program when I was in fourth grade. A few of my friends
were attending the the Math Science Program and were pouring their feelings about it. Being a fourth
grader with limited knowledge about the Upcounty Center Program, I felt out of place with them, so I
decided to listen to their conversation. I learned about what exactly the Upcounty Center Program was
and the esteemed reputation it had among our family friend group. In fact, it wasn t only our family
friend group that thought that getting accepted into the magnet

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using Refracting Telescopes
Refraction of light through different media
Light travels in waves through space in straight lines. In a vacuum the speed of light is 3x10⁸m/s,
when light travels through different substances called mediums, it will change speed depending on the
optical density. If light travels through a medium at a right angle, it s velocity will change but not the
direction. However if light enters the medium at an angle, it s direction and speed will change.
The index of refraction is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the
medium: n = c / v n = the medium c = the speed of light in a vacuum v = speed of light in a medium
(The index of refraction does not use any units)
For example, the refractive index of air is 1 and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Refracting telescopes are more reliable because they are permanently fixed which in turn makes the
images produced steadier and clearer
Disadvantages of Refracting telescopes
There are many disadvantages when using refracting telescopes. One of which is chromatic aberration.
Chromatic Aberration happens when light travel through the glass lens and the different colours that
make up white light refract at different angles. This causes the observer to see a rainbow around the
image they are viewing.
One way to counteract the effects of chromatic aberration is to use multiple compensating lenses.
Another way to avoid chromatic aberration is to use a long object focal length this is the distance
between the focus and the objective
Another disadvantage is the difficulty of making the lenses. The objective lens need to have no
imperfections and the shape of the lens is thicker in the center and thunder on the edges which are the
only support_ hoch manes the lens v ey fragile on the edges and are more susceptible to damage
the largest objective lens for a refracting telescope is only 1 meter in

interactive global economy.
The freer economic environment of the twenty first century, the reduction of restrictions on labor
movement in areas such as the European Union, and the advent of new technology have combined to
mean that many fledgling enterprises operate internationally almost as soon as they are established.
There is a known fact that different nationalities do have different values and that these affect the way
people organize, conduct and manage work.
HRM activities such as recruitment and selection, training and development, reward and performance
appraisal, may all be affected by cultural values and practices in the respective host countries. Even
though they have standardized HRM policies and practices through the world, we will analyze in this

Floppy Disk Fallacies By Elizabeth Bohnhorst
The Evolution of Technology What if all through schooling, grades first through twelfth, the use of
any technology was not allowed? Not even as a learning resource or tool? What would our world be
like today? Elizabeth Bohnhorst, author of Floppy Disk Fallacies, believes that technology is having a
negative impact on students and that it is taking away from their education. Bohnhorst wrote her essay
in 2005, when computers were still an essential in every day life; it was only ten years ago.
Technology has evolved quite a bit, but I can still remember sitting in my freshman high school
classes, with multiple computers in every classroom, there to assist us with research, media, and
learning programs. Learning about and how technology works at an early age is critical for students
and young adults to succeed in their future. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Learning with technology will [slowly] assist the students the in s and out s of working technology
and computers. What does Bohnhorst think of college classes in 2015? Online classes are a very
popular option for the working college student and professors allow laptops in their classrooms for
note taking and research. Students need to learn now, in the classrooms, so they are prepared for what

Montessori Obedience Essay
The power to obey is the last phase in the development of the will, which in its turn has made
obedience possible. (Montessori, 1988, p.239)
Montessori believed that the disorderly and disobedient acts of a young child where from those actions
that he/she had yet to develop and so where unable to control successfully.
Discipline and obedience could not therefore be inflicted on a young child as had been traditionally
thought, nor could it be sustained through rewards and punishments. Obedience is seen as something
which develops in the child in much the same way as other aspects of his character. (Montessori,
1988, p.234)
As Montessori observed, obedience is a developmental process and can not occur unless the child has

When he/she is finished with the activity, he/she returns the apparatus back to its allocated place,
keeping the order within the environment. All the materials contain a control of error, avoiding the
need for a teacher to highlight the child s mistake, allowing him/her the freedom to correct
himself/herself, with out the need for adult intervention. He/she is then left and allowed the freedom to
carry out his/her task, as many times as he/she wants, for as long as he/she wants without any
unnecessary interruptions.
With this constant cycle of activity begins a process and through the many repetitions of the exercise
the child gradually becomes aware, and conscious of his/her actions that his/her hands are performing.
Through this awareness, his/her actions can no longer be considered a product of an inner desire, but
have become actions performed with a consciousness and deliberation.
That which at first was but a vital impulse (horme) has become a deliberate act. The child s first
movements where instinctive. Now he acts consciously and voluntarily and with this comes the
awakening of the spirit. (Montessori, 1988, p.231)
From observations made by Maria Montessori we have come to the understanding that discipline is a
maturational process and can not be present in a child who has yet to develop his/her own will.

Malnutrition And Human Development
In 1990 the very important first Human Development Reported a new proposal for promoting human
development. Human development is developing the richness of human life. Human development
focuses on developing people s lives rather than assuming the economical growth. Opportunities about
human development is all about giving individuals more independence to live their lives to their full
potential. For instance, teaching a young man would help build his skills, but there would be no sense
in doing that if he is denied access of getting a job opportunity. Human development is about having
more choices and more opportunities . The process is to help develop a good environment for people
and their families and to help develop them to their full potential.
Malnutrition contributes to undernutrition and overnutrition and is also a deficiency of nutrition.
Agents that cause malnutrition are poor diet and repeated infections which is particularly in
underprivileged populations. Inadequate diet and disease are linked in to your common guideline

Octavian Caesar Vs Marc Anthony
Octavian Caesar versus Marc Antony
Octavian Caesar, also known as Augustus, was the grandnephew of the dictator Julius Caesar. Marc
Antony was one of Caesar s friends and allies. The conflict between two powerful men who were
competing to succeed Caesar was the spark that transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman
Empire. For several reasons, these two Romans began a feud that changed their own lives and altered
the course of history. First, Octavian, who was acclaimed Caesar s heir, announced his claim to Caesar
s succession after Caesar was assassinated. Antony was displeased because he wanted to rule. Second,
Antony, who controlled the Roman legions, felt threatened when Octavian gathered troops of his own.
Third, Antony s involvement with Cleopatra started rumors that they were plotting against Octavian.

Republic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Caesar was killed. Since he was Caesar s ally and close friend who had helped him rise to power,

assisted Caesar in defeating Gaul and other enemies, which led to his becoming Caesar s Second in

This report is based on the book; See No Evil, by Robert Baer. To be honest, I didn t read Baer s book.
I listened to the audio version which has Robert Baer himself reading his book. While flying
commuter and mail flights, I was able to listen to Baer s adventures in the Middle East. There is a

That was the usual sign that the action would be to build calluses on the backside.
When Baer was trying to get information on the embassy bombing while working in east Beirut, he
felt that he was working in the dark. He needed to be in West Beirut where all the good agents were,
but that was under the control of Hezbollah and getting in there would be suicide. He had to resort to
access agents, which didn t know anything, but could get to those that did know something. He found
a good access agent and was able to dig up a lot of information with him and through the use of
wiretaps, which is very easy to do in Beirut. One vital piece of information was about Hussein Khalil
being a key player in the Glass kidnapping. He also found out that Hussein Khalil was in charge of the
takeover of the Shaykh ab Dalah barracks and was in charge at the same time IJO hostages were held
there. The investigation lead to a terrorist name Mugneah and he could have had an assassin, he calls
him Isom, take him out at a pending meeting with a muffler charge. A muffler charge is two cars
loaded with explosives, one on each side of the victim s car; a very effective high pressure sandwich.
He decided not to do it, figuring that assassinations should be up to the politicians in Washington. He
never saw Isom again, but he regretted his decision after that. Baer made the comment that if
Washington would have recognized the terrorist threat back then, in the 90s,

Social Injustice In The American Revolution
Throughout our cake, we had two major themes that were evident, social injustice and political
grievances. To demonstrate social injustice, we used medals for the Latin American Revolution,
Chains for the American Revolution, and a tennis ball for the French Revolution. To represent
economic inequality, we used tea bags for the American revolution, bread for the French revolution
and money for the Latin American Revolution.
For the American Revolution, The chains represented the role African American slaves played in the
revolution. The revolution motivated African American resistance against slavery. The tea bags were
symbolic to the Boston Tea Party when Massachusetts colonist protested against the Tea Act of 1773
or more specifically Taxation without Representation by dumping chests of tea into the Boston

of mixed Europeans and Indians who served the peninsulares/criollos. Lastly the gold medal portrayed
the lowest class, the Africans/natives. This class was not only the lowest but also the largest. The
people in this class were not identified as citizens but did do most of the labor. To demonstrate
economic inequality, money was put on the cake to show mercantilism. Spain used mercantilism when

Mesoamerican was a Ball Game of Life and Death from History
The Mesoamerican ball game began over 3,500 years ago. Ceremonies, city and daily life revolved
around this exciting sport. The survival of the both the players and the spectators depended on the
outcome of the game. The Mesoamerican ball game had a court to play on, a ball that was used during
the game, uniforms that the players wore, and rules to follow during gameplay. Even though the
Mesoamerican ball game was the first sport, it was a very advanced sport with how many different
ideas went into the creation of the game. The ball game was found all over Latin America including in
the Olmec, Toltec, Maya and Aztec civilizations with the Olmecs believed to be the inventors of the
game. The Mesoamerican ball game was not just an exciting and dangerous sport; it was a winner
takes all competition. The ball game was a game of life or death. The Mesoamerican ball game was
said to be invented around the Pre classical Period by the Olmecs and was a well adopted sport by
many different civilizations by the time of the Classical Period. In Mesoamerican mythology the ball
game is a significant factor in the story of the Mayan gods Hun Hunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu. Both
of these gods had annoyed the gods of the underworld with their noisy playing and the two brothers

The Importance Of Cultural Literacy
Cultural literacy is not a well known word in today s society but being culturally literate is essential to
be an active participant in one s nation. Cultural literacy is the ability to understand a culture enough
to be able to participate in it actively. In modern society, a large portion of Americans, especially in
the younger generations, are not culturally literate and this poses a problem for the future of our
community and our economy.
Often fads are the defining points of recent cultural changes for example in the 70 s the hippie
movement was a defining portion of American culture and even global culture. If someone did not
understand that reference in that time, they would be unable to follow media, news, and possibly even
everyday interaction. By examining the economic trends of manias, one seeks to gain a deeper
understanding of how they affect our culture on a deeper level. As the very nature of fads is to have an
unexplained and short lived popularity predicting economic trends of crazes is very nearly impossible
to do accurately although there have been attempts to model fads (Plott and Smith). This can have a
devastating effect on the economy and at the very least severely hurt individual investors. When the
demand for certain fads becomes uncontrollable, they may cause an economic bubble to form. A
financial bubble is when the price of an object dramatically outweighs its actual value (Singh) an
example of this is the demand for twinkies during the Hostess

What Does It Mean To Be Holistic
Holistic is an important word that is often used in regards to health and social context, and we will
surely come across it relatively often, as it is crucial in the education arena. The definiton of holistic is
of the whole , and refers to the fact that anything and everything is the sum of its parts, not just one or

multifunctional electronic device, designed to be used in a variety of ways and that it is not just a

Julia Alvarez s Argumentative Essay
Dedé is filled with sorrow and emptiness for the life she has chosen, nothing fulfilling her the way she
wishes. Jaimito dominates her, she is not allowed to see her sisters, and her sisters possess the
adventure she has always wanted. When she sees them walk toward her in union, she compares them
to the three fates: the incarnations of destiny and life. She does this because these mythical creatures
spin the thread of life and determine how long one lives, which is exactly what her sisters are doing to
her. By trying to involve her in the revolution, they determine how the course of her life is going to

Maté is too sensitive and kind hearted to not take principle things in a personal way, and she prefers
not to not hurt others. She goes against what Minerva wants her to do, and does not share her personal

right, and she is now a grown and independent women. Knowing that by sharing her story she is
risking the guards safety, especially Santiclo s, Maté would rather make her own decision in the

people would prefer to take the route of revenge, no matter who gets hurt in the process. Yet she

Ways to have exposure to abortion is urbanization and educate yourself on population growth.
Exposure equals more acceptance of the idea of getting an abortion.
Barbara Agresti Finlay study used data from a sample of students at a large southern university. Finlay
wanted to see the differences between male and female in correlation to attitudes towards abortion.
Finlay study revealed male s abortion attitudes are simpler in structure than those of females. The
reason for this is because males abortion attitudes are related primarily to their degree of
conventionality in sexual and nonsexual matters. The reason for this in females is because females
abortion attitudes are related to a broader set of attitudinal variables. The attitudinal variables include
sex role conventionality, the value of children in their life plans, the right to life issue, sexual, and
general conventionality. Women have a greater ability to emphasize so they understand why some
women might want to have an abortion. Female opinions on abortion involve more humanitarian
aspects than males.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were several studies of attitudes toward the practice and
legalization. These studies were done by Westoff, Blake, Jones, Mileti, and Barnett. The studies that
were done focused on the description of attitudes toward abortion and how they changed over time.

The Media Coverage Of Oscar Pistorius Case
Essay (CRM 1410)
The media coverage of Oscar Pistorius case
The theory that I will discuss for my essay is called psychological positivism. Psychological
positivism is a theory, which suggest that there is criminal personality that resides in the minds of the
criminals. The theory was designed by Austrian neurologist called Sigmund Freud. He believed that
some people committed crime due to certain internal factors that one had little or no control over.
These internal factors can be formed due to lack of parental love or it can also be formed if an
individual has suffered a tragedy in the past which can lead to an individual committing crime.
Sigmund Feud also believed that there are more than one aspects to human personality. These aspects
are id, ego and superego which developed over time in different stages in one s life. The first thing
that is developed in human personality is the id. It is a biological component of the personality, which
include human s basics. The id is our most primitive need gratification impulses. The second
interacting force that is developed in our nature is called superego, which exist in all three of our
consciousness. Superego is the higher power of our mind that is concerned with what is socially
acceptable. The third and the last aspect of our personality is called ego which only exist in conscious
and preconscious minds. The ego feature of our personality works according to reality principle. The
reality principle is the idea that the

Gun Control In The Tao Te Ching
The Tao Te Ching outlines that if people value great individuals, they become weak. Also, if people
place high value on possessions, they start to steal. The Tao Te Ching also articulates that the master
leads by filling the hearts of people, weakening their ambitions and toughening their determination
(Lao tzu 3). The master assists individuals to lose their knowledge and desires and creates
misperception in people who believe they possess knowledge. This concept can be applied in a
political conflict in the contemporary world. It is evident that individuals have overvalued possessions.
Overvaluing possessions has led to the emergence of various problems that have caused political
conflict.
According to Tao Te Ching, people start stealing when they place too much value in possessions. For
example, the gun control debate in the United States has raged on for several years. On the one hand,
the government argues that individuals should have rights over their guns to reduce gun violence.
There have been numerous cases of mass shootings in the recent past. These incidents are attributed to
the high number of guns accessible even to children and mentally challenged individual. The
government argues that tougher gun control policies will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

when they need them or if compelled and even then, they will use them with restraint (Lao tzu 31).

Battle Of The Bulge Research Paper
Artillery shells flying, with loud, thunderous booms signifying their arrival.
Bodies flailing, ripped apart by machine guns. German Panzers destroying everything in their path. A
blood soaked forest; the Ardennes. The Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. It was a hard
fought allied victory that pitted American, British, Australian, and South African forces against the
battle hardened Panzer and SS German divisions. In the heat of the battle, the American 101st division
was surrounded by German forces at Bastogne. When asked to surrender, General Anthony McAuliffe
only replied with one word; Nuts! . The 106th division was almost annihilated. This was a gallant
allied victory, showing the force of the American soldiers. However, it came with great cost.
Influenced by the beginning of the war and how the war turned against the Nazi s, the Battle of the

Due to an increase in social welfare spending, local authorities took advantages and used loans to
embark on vast public housing schemes. The balance of trade was an economic indicator of the
stability.
Unfortunately for the economy of Germany the successfulness of the country was largely supported
by foreign funding. Although this gave Germany stability it was not a secure way to live, if any
communication went wrong with another country, then that country would stop funding. Also to
Germany s disadvantage, the funds could be withdrawn at short notice. As the country was
economically becoming more stable, the public spending was increasing which was not good as the
money in the country was coming from loans.
Although export production was stronger than before, they had been accompanied by a wave of

Power Of Conflict
Conflict is a confrontation between two or more people who are trying to attain different goals,
however it is possible for both parties to have compatible goals, but only perceive their goals to be
incompatible. Conflict will then result in some kind of tension between the parties, oftentimes due to
each party perceiving some sort of resource to be scarce. Conflict and resources are semi
interdependent because the if someone believes a specific resource to be scarce, they will engage in
conflict with another party whom they believe to possess that resource. Power is something intangible

Many people use their own resource currency to their advantage to manipulate other people, for
example by threatening to kick your child out of the house and thus denying them shelter. On a much
larger scale, resource currency has been the cause of the majority of wars in our world s history.
Reaching as far back as around 2700 BCE, King Gilgamesh of Uruk marched on his neighbors in an
attempt to procure cedarwood, a resource which he needed in order to build a temple. In present day,
many wars are fought specifically over the resource of oil, between nations that have oil and the
nations that want it. In fact, humans are by far not the only species to initiate conflict because of
resources. It is common knowledge that animals across the world fight each other for food and water.
Many animals even hunt one another. However, there are more advanced examples of resource
warfare in the animal kingdom. Macaque monkeys, who largely reside in Asia and the Middle East,
live in tribes that have an inner hierarchy, similar to some human tribal societies. Oftentimes, if one
macaque tribe finds an area that would be beneficial to inhabit, with plentiful food sources, but
another macaque tribe is already inhabiting the area, the two tribes will then engage in a turf war in

Rhetorical Devices In Cold Blood
Truman Capote s excerpt from his book, In Cold Blood, instantly views Holcomb as a small, empty
town with drama never stopping to say hello. Capote truly hooks his readers with his use of structure,
imagery, and diction. By using all of these rhetorical strategies, Capote was able to give the town of
Holcomb drama in itself. Capote uses structure and continues it throughout the excerpt, slowly
narrowing it down as he gets closer to the middle of the town. The setting of town starts out extremely
broad. He talks about how The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas,
a lonesome area that other Kasans call out there. He talks about the atmosphere of the town and how
Holcomb, too, can be seen from great distances. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His word choice stays that way until mid way to the end of the excerpt. When he finishes describing
the timeworn and moves on to talk about the school, his diction raises slightly into a higher category.
It is important that his diction raises at that point in the story because it gives the school a more
important feel, compared to the town. It causes the school to stand out more and gives it a more
professional outlook. As Capote continues to talk about the school he indicates that drama may
actually stop for a visit. Capote says, Until one morning, in mid November of 1959, few Americans in
fact, few Kansans had ever heard of Holcomb. Until one morning is very important in that statement
because it immediately foreshadows that soon everyone will know of

Examples Of Contrapasso In Dante s Inferno
This poem was filled with the act of contrappasso; the idea that each sin had a justifiable crime . Dante
s very first descension into hell went like, Above the chasm of pain, which holds the din/ Of infinite
grief: a gulf so dark and deep/ And murky that though I gazed intently down/ Into the canyon, I could
see nothing below. (Inferno IV.5 8). Limbo was described as a sightless zone , but this circle didn t
contain people who were corrupted by sin. Virgil while describing the people that inhabited this circle
said, Before you go on, I tell you: they did not sin;/ if they have merit, it can t suffice without/
Baptism, portal to the faith you maintain./ Some lived before the Christian faith, so that/ They did not

It is known to the readers that Francesca was the wife of Gianciotto Malatesta, but she fell in love with

cries wind tossed,/ And lofted by the storm. Master, I cried,/ Who are these people, by black air
oppressed? (Inferno V. 43 45). The people who fell victim to lust were in a never ending dust storm.
Francesca also went on to describe to their punishment, This one, who now will never leave my side,
Kissed my mouth trembling. A Galeotto, that book! (Inferno V.121 122). Since Francesa fell victim to
lust, she has to forever be around her lover. That sin had a very justifiable punishment. Later on we
have the sin of fraud, and this again came with a justifiable crime. This canto was a very hard one for
Dante to encounter because of the grotesque form of the inhabitants that lived there. Once he saw this
scene, he said, Try to imagine, yourself, how I could have kept/ Tears of my own from falling for the
sake/ Of our human image so grotesquely reshaped, Contorted so the eyes tears fell to wet/ The
buttocks at the cleft. (Inferno XX.

The Civil War Of The United States Prisons
Brother against brother. This was the Civil War being summed up in just three words. Mike Wright
wrote, On both sides of the war, men and women were locked away in dark prisons or held in outdoor
camps under blistering sun and freezing snow. They were fed too little and lived and died under
primitive conditions. One would arguably say that the Northern prisons might feel a little more at
home than the Southern prisons, but this wasn t the case at all, the prisons on each side were both
poorly managed, overcrowded and full of diseases. The intentions of the prisons were not necessarily
to kill the inmates, but because of poor planning were the prisons filthy. Both the Union s and the

During the early years of the war, the two sides frequently had prisoner exchanges, but that was
stopped by a decision made by U.S General Grant and Secretary of War, Stanton. They both thought
that it was pointless and using too much time and people. Robert H. Kellogg, who was a sergeant
major, described his entry as a prisoner into the camp on May 2nd, 1864: As we entered the place, a
spectacle met our eyes that almost froze our blood with horror, and made our hearts fail within us.
Before us were forms that had once been active and erect; stalwart men, now nothing but mere
walking skeletons, covered with filth and intensity of their feeling, exclaimed with earnestness. Can
this be hell? God protect us! and all thought that He alone could bring them out alive from so terrible a
place. In the center of the whole was a swamp, occupying about three or four acres of the narrowed
limits, and a part of this marshy place had been used by the prisoners as a sink, and excrement covered
the ground, the scent arising from which was suffocating. The ground allotted to our ninety was near
the edge of this plague spot, and how we were to live through the warm summer weather in the midst
of such fearful surroundings, was more than we cared to think of just then. Andersonville is a southern
camp that could easily be compared to concentration camps,. Henry Wirz, in charge of Andersonville,
was tried and executed for the crimes that he committed while being in charge.

The Goals Of Language Learning And Teaching
The goals of language learning and teaching
Introduction
It is generally recognized that language is a vehicle for the expression or exchanging of thoughts,
concepts, knowledge, and information as well as the fixing and transmission of experience and
knowledge. (Bussmann, 1996: 253)
Language is the method in which people from certain culture organize their thoughts, helping them to
communicate with each other. Moreover, language shapes their relationship with other cultural people,
and different languages have abilities to shape that relationship differently. Setting language learning
goals is one of the most important key strategies, which mostly successful language learners obtain.
The biggest problem of language learners obtaining is lack of language learning goals. Kern (1995)
noted that it is meaningful to understand learners beliefs and desires about language learning, which
gives the important point of language learning goals.
In general goals, Coleman (1996) found that the six most popular reasons were because I like the
language, for my future career, for travelling in different countries, to have a better understanding of
other countries thinking way, and because I would like to live in foreign countires.
In SLA perspective, there are many goals for language learners. SLA focuses on whether the learners
actually obtain native like competence (Long, 1990), The goal can be overcoming problems with
language learner s communicative abilities; the

Maya Lin Andy Goldsworthy Analysis
Both artists, Maya Lin and Andy Goldsworthy, use nature to express their feelings through art.
Goldsworthy uses nature more in a temporary art setting. The sculptures he creates are all from objects
surrounding his project. Whether it is made of rocks, leafs, branches, ice sickles, and many other
surrounding objects. Maya Lin on the other hand brings in all the materials that she uses on her
sculptures. Lin strives to show the way nature or a piece of land once was and how important it was to
the tribes that lived off the land. Lin has also done a lot of memorials such as the veteran s memorial
in Washington D.C. and she also did a statue or table for Yale University showing the amount of

Lin wanted to show people what the Celilo Falls looked like and how the natives used to live off the
falls for fishing before it became a dam. Celilo Fall was one of the largest waterfalls in North America
and was used every day for fishing by the natives. They would fish to provide their own means of
food and then sale any extra fish they would catch to make extra money on the side. When the dam
went into place in the late fifties it destroyed the falls and the natives were not able to catch as many
fish as before. Maya researched how the natives use to sit way out over the water to fish and wanted to
portray that in her design in showing the world how the falls used to be used. When you reach the
Celilo Park you see a big out stretched walking path that leans way over the water. At the end of this
stretch of walk way is a little house or hut that has pictures and sounds of what the falls looked and
sounded like when it was in full stream. Maya wanted the Natives to have something to remember the
falls for generations to come and so that they could show bypasses what life use to be

  • 2. Response To Male Dominance In Axis, By Alice Munro Male dominance is a persisting issue in society, and it has been for a very long time. In response to male dominance came feminism, the advocacy of women s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes (Oxford Living Dictionaries). Through a feminist lens, Alice Munro s short story, Axis provides a strong portrayal of the injustices that a feminist would stand for. It illustrates a sense of male dominance, as well as female responses to male dominance in an older form of Canadian society. These concepts are revealed through various situations in the story that address the lack of respect for the education of a female, the disregard of a woman s opinion, and the idea that females have adjusted to their position in society. The story entails many significant representations of how women lack various forms of power due to male dominance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. My Reflection Of The Humanities And Communications Program The Humanities and Communications Program was a mystery to me when I first heard about it. Many of my friends were in the Math/Science Program, so I heard many stories about projects and activities done there. I only knew a few people in the Humanities Program, so when I got the acceptance letter, I had a mix of emotions. I had worry and fear along with joy, but I was tensed about the people I would meet and the different projects I would have to do. The worry and fear ebbed away after I met my classmates. There were students from incredibly broad backgrounds whom I would be working with. I was surprised when the acuity of my peers and the vast amount of ideas they had. As I went through sixth and seventh grade, I formed strong friendships with my peers. Although the application process and program at first were daunting, I m glad I decided to choose the center program rather than going to my home middle school. I first heard of the middle school magnet program when I was in fourth grade. A few of my friends were attending the the Math Science Program and were pouring their feelings about it. Being a fourth grader with limited knowledge about the Upcounty Center Program, I felt out of place with them, so I decided to listen to their conversation. I learned about what exactly the Upcounty Center Program was and the esteemed reputation it had among our family friend group. In fact, it wasn t only our family friend group that thought that getting accepted into the magnet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In a vacuum the speed of light is 3x10⁸m/s, when light travels through different substances called mediums, it will change speed depending on the optical density. If light travels through a medium at a right angle, it s velocity will change but not the direction. However if light enters the medium at an angle, it s direction and speed will change. The index of refraction is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the medium: n = c / v n = the medium c = the speed of light in a vacuum v = speed of light in a medium (The index of refraction does not use any units) For example, the refractive index of air is 1 and ... Discipline and obedience could not therefore be inflicted on a young child as had been traditionally thought, nor could it be sustained through rewards and punishments. When Baer was trying to get information on the embassy bombing while working in east Beirut, he felt that he was working in the dark. He needed to be in West Beirut where all the good agents were, but that was under the control of Hezbollah and getting in there would be suicide. He had to resort to access agents, which didn t know anything, but could get to those that did know something. He found a good access agent and was able to dig up a lot of information with him and through the use of wiretaps, which is very easy to do in Beirut. One vital piece of information was about Hussein Khalil being a key player in the Glass kidnapping. He also found out that Hussein Khalil was in charge of the takeover of the Shaykh ab Dalah barracks and was in charge at the same time IJO hostages were held there. The investigation lead to a terrorist name Mugneah and he could have had an assassin, he calls him Isom, take him out at a pending meeting with a muffler charge. A muffler charge is two cars loaded with explosives, one on each side of the victim s car; a very effective high pressure sandwich. The ball game was found all over Latin America including in the Olmec, Toltec, Maya and Aztec civilizations with the Olmecs believed to be the inventors of the game. The Mesoamerican ball game was not just an exciting and dangerous sport; it was a winner takes all competition. The ball game was a game of life or death. The Mesoamerican ball game was said to be invented around the Pre classical Period by the Olmecs and was a well adopted sport by many different civilizations by the time of the Classical Period. In Mesoamerican mythology the ball game is a significant factor in the story of the Mayan gods Hun Hunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu. Both of these gods had annoyed the gods of the underworld with their noisy playing and the two brothers were tricked into going into the underworld where they were challenged to a ball game (Cartwright). • 19. The Importance Of Cultural Literacy Cultural literacy is not a well known word in today s society but being culturally literate is essential to be an active participant in one s nation. Cultural literacy is the ability to understand a culture enough to be able to participate in it actively. In modern society, a large portion of Americans, especially in the younger generations, are not culturally literate and this poses a problem for the future of our community and our economy. Often fads are the defining points of recent cultural changes for example in the 70 s the hippie movement was a defining portion of American culture and even global culture. If someone did not understand that reference in that time, they would be unable to follow media, news, and possibly even everyday interaction. By examining the economic trends of manias, one seeks to gain a deeper understanding of how they affect our culture on a deeper level. As the very nature of fads is to have an unexplained and short lived popularity predicting economic trends of crazes is very nearly impossible to do accurately although there have been attempts to model fads (Plott and Smith). This can have a devastating effect on the economy and at the very least severely hurt individual investors. When the demand for certain fads becomes uncontrollable, they may cause an economic bubble to form. A financial bubble is when the price of an object dramatically outweighs its actual value (Singh) an example of this is the demand for twinkies during the Hostess ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She does this because these mythical creatures spin the thread of life and determine how long one lives, which is exactly what her sisters are doing to her. Psychological positivism is a theory, which suggest that there is criminal personality that resides in the minds of the criminals. The theory was designed by Austrian neurologist called Sigmund Freud. He believed that some people committed crime due to certain internal factors that one had little or no control over. These internal factors can be formed due to lack of parental love or it can also be formed if an individual has suffered a tragedy in the past which can lead to an individual committing crime. The Goals Of Language Learning And Teaching The goals of language learning and teaching Introduction It is generally recognized that language is a vehicle for the expression or exchanging of thoughts, concepts, knowledge, and information as well as the fixing and transmission of experience and knowledge. (Bussmann, 1996: 253) Language is the method in which people from certain culture organize their thoughts, helping them to communicate with each other. Moreover, language shapes their relationship with other cultural people, and different languages have abilities to shape that relationship differently. Setting language learning goals is one of the most important key strategies, which mostly successful language learners obtain. The biggest problem of language learners obtaining is lack of language learning goals. Kern (1995) noted that it is meaningful to understand learners beliefs and desires about language learning, which gives the important point of language learning goals. In general goals, Coleman (1996) found that the six most popular reasons were because I like the language, for my future career, for travelling in different countries, to have a better understanding of other countries thinking way, and because I would like to live in foreign countires.
