Show Boat History
On December 27, 1927 when the premiere of Show Boat opened in the spectacular new Ziegfeld
Theater, producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. had brought something new to Broadway. As Katherine Leigh
Axtell writes, the show was neither an operetta nor a musical comedy, neither a vaudeville nor a
revue. For the first time, composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II seamlessly
integrated plot, character, music, and dance into a modern musical production starting a new genre of
musical, which is often called musical theater or book musical. Show Boat also brought serious
themes that left the audience unable to react the way they had to the previous Broadway musicals. For
the first time, there was a breakthrough in racial integration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to Todd Decker, an Associate Professor of Musicology at the Washington University of St.
Louis, Ferber s story is best known today for its retelling as a musical. Just weeks after the novel was
published, the composer Jerome Kern and the lyricist and author Oscar Hammerstein II set about
making Ferber s interracial cast of characters sing and dance on the Broadway stage. Show Boat
illustrates the real lives of both blacks and whites living and working alongside the Mississippi river.
Although within the storyline blacks and white were both on the same stage, Show Boat tackles
complicated issues through an intricate tale of interracial

Essay about Chlorinated Drinking Water is Necessary for...
With the aggregation of millions of people in large urban centers, there is an unprecedented amount of
human waste to be treated. In this treatment, pathogenic microbes (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and
parasitic worms) must be removed or reduced to harmless levels. It is well known that in any
community, at any time, there are always small numbers of people who are either manifestly ill, in
some stage of illness but not demonstratively so, or healthy carriers of diseases. Together, these are
indications of a community s normal background of pathogenic microorganisms in which feces are in
the sewage. As a result, sewage is a great threat to human health, especially for those who come in
contact with water drawn from sewage contaminated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The coarse screens consist of a bank of vertical bars set approximately 1 inch apart. Behind the
screens is a comminutor, which grinds the remaining solids to a size that should prevent damage to the
machinery that later are used to filter (Benarde).
The following step is secondary treatment, depending on the type of secondary treatment to be given;
the sewage will pass to either a bio filter or an activated sludge aeration tank. Both are based on the
stabilization or neutralization or organic waste by biological action. Although pathogenic
microorganisms are partially removed in the settling process and filtration and aeration mechanically
remove others, it is the process of chlorination that destroys the great majority of organisms. In
addition, chlorine leaves a residual in the water system can further disinfect, as water is discharged
into the watercourse.
Water supplies were first chlorinated at the turn of the century, and over the following two decades
chlorination was introduced for the disinfecting of drinking water in industrialized countries. In the
chlorination process, chlorine reacts mainly with natural water constituents to produce a complex
mixture of by products, including a wide variety of halogenated compounds,

Natural Selection Theory
Evolution, before being called so, was first referred to by Charles Darwin in On the Origins of Species
as descent with modification. This is a very good general explanation for what evolution is. Darwin
believed that over long periods of time, animals traits changed and developed. This strayed from the
traditional beliefs at the time which was that all species were created by God and did not change. He
also believed that all animals were somehow related. He supported this belief with the idea that there
were transitional species that existed as different animals evolved. His specific theory was that
evolution occurred by means of a mechanism called natural selection.
The idea of natural selection was essentially that some traits were more ... Show more content on

Two main principles of stratigraphy are the principle of horizontality and the principle of
superposition. They mean that due to gravity, the strata or geological layers settle in horizontal layers
due to gravity and that also those at the top are likely younger than the layers at the bottom. At first,
geologists used fossils found underground to determine different layers. Later, it was realized that
fossils found deep in the ground were unlike those that were currently alive. 75 years before Darwin
first published his essay on evolution, studies of stratigraphy led James Hutton to believe that there
was gradual change amongst species just like there has been gradual geological change on Earth.
Through the strata there were different fossils which documented the evolutionary history of the

The Effect of Historical Influences on The Development Of The Theatre Royal Bath In The 18th And
19th Century
During the 18th and 19th centuries going to the theatre became very popular, and was a common
pastime in the evening. During the first half of the 19th century the theatre was at its most popular
throughout the two centuries, and throughout the whole of the 19th century it was as popular as it was
during the 18th, attracting the same sort of audience size. Today you would take a trip to the cinema,
out to a fancy restaurant or nightclub; in the Victorian times you would pay a visit to the theatre. As
going to the theatre was one of the main social events of the time, changes in society would ... Show

It became so successful that in the year of 1805 it closed down and re opened on a new larger site, to
accommodate the increasing audience sizes. It moved form Orchard Street to Beufort Square in the
new more popular, modern, area of Bath. On the 12th October 1805, the curtain first went up on
Beaufort Square.
Both sites the Theatre Royal occupied underwent many developments during the 18th and 19th
centuries. The plans for the design of the theatre were changed many times until it was settled that it
would be built in the style of the Doric order, which at the time was expensive and fashionable. Other
buildings in the city were also being built like this. The Assembly Rooms Designed by John Wood the
Younger in 1769, were both a meeting place and a venue for public functions.

The first site on Orchard Street underwent its most noticeable changes when people first started
accusing it of being too small to house the audience numbers it was attracting. Plans were drawn up to
improve the appearance of the Theatre in 1766. Money was spent on general improvements of the
auditorium and a lofty dome decorated with statues of Apollo and Muses replaced the initial flat
ceiling. However, when re opened the renovations were far from satisfactory, and in 1775 the
auditorium was again re constructed, this

Assess the Factors Which Led to the Creation of Itv Essay
Assess the factors which led to the creation of ITV in 1954
Commercial Television has been playing big role in our lives for about 60 years already, whether it is
the Morning News, Downton Abbey or The Britain s Got Talent show (Johnson, Turnock, 2005: 1).
Commercial television is entertaining, educating and informative and tries to fulfil viewer s wishes of
what they want to watch. British audience has been able to choose what they watch since 1954, when
government published the Act of Television which allowed the creation of the first independent
television in the United Kingdom. The creation of ITV broke the BBC s monopoly and introduced
country a new era with free market and diverse television channels (Williams, 2010:151). ... Show

Also, many senior positions in the BBC were still suspicious of the new medium of television
(Turnock, 2007:21). Lord Reith summed up the general attitude of BBC s management to television
when he told that television will be of no importance in your lifetime or mine (Williams, 2010:144).
General opinion in the BBC was that television would not become as successful as radio. As well as
BBC management, government did not find television being as important as radio. On the contrary to
the BBC s management, there were people who saw future in commercial television. One of those
people was Norman Collins who became a director general of Independent Television who left the
BBC and started to campaign commercial television (Crisell, 1997: 78). BBC s broadcasting
developing slowly because of the shortage of technical knowledge which gave a reason for
government to legitimize commercial television which would also give jobs many advertisers and
television people. Commercial television campaign was also able to persuade the government that
competition would make television better as companies had to give their best to make the viewer to
watch their channel.
Another reason which made commercial lobby successful, was the circumstance that important
members of government including the Prime Minister, Churchill, were not prepared to defend the
BBC (Curran, Seaton, 2010:154). After a change in power in late 1951, the conservative party decided
to publish its ideas for

Passages From The Gospels Of Mark Matthew Essay
Passages from the Gospels of Mark Matthew Throughout the New Testament Gospels, an abundance
of enriching, soulful narratives thrive and live on through their cultivated messages of hope,
compassion, miracles, and redemption. Recalling in detail the heroic life and journey of Jesus Christ,
expounding his teachings and philosophy, and revealing hidden components of God s divine nature,
the Gospels are rife with symbolism and potent imagery which are accessible to people of every faith.
The timeline of Jesus Christ s life, miracle healings, administered sermons, and selfless service to the
people he met and interacted with is encapsulated in the storyline of four texts within the Christian
Bible which have been juxtaposed with one another. When these are read together, one can observe
many fascinating parallels and similarities that make it difficult to dispute the information or messages
about the life of Jesus Christ which the Gospels disseminate. There are specific passages in the
Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John which reveal the fundamental aspects of what it means to
be a disciple, and furthermore, what it means to be a human being. This essay will address
discipleship and human nature as they appear in three passages, Mark 5: 1 20, Mark 5: 35 43, and
Matthew... By way of thorough examination and formal analysis of the scriptural text, definitions of
what it means to be a true disciple and a true human being will be discussed. In the first passage from

Discovery Of The Concentration Of Phosphate
The goal of the lab was to discover the concentration of phosphate in various colas in order to help
with a project for a major cola company. Before we could accomplish this final goal, a Spec 20 was
used to test three colors of food colorings. A Spec 20 is an instrument used to measure the intensity of
a light beam before and after it passes through a sample and compares these two intensities (What
does a Spectronic 20 measure). The instrument is able to measure the percent transmittance and
absorbance of a given sample. It works by taking light of various wavelengths and passing them
through a monochromator. A monochromator is a device that transmits a wavelength of light. The
machine diffracts the wavelengths. The sample that is placed in a small container, called a cuvette,
absorbs various wavelengths. This depends on the particular sampled being tested. The amount of
light absorbed is projected by the machine on a screen, in our case, a digital screen (How Does a
Spectronic 20 work?). By doing the lab with the food colorings, we were able to properly learn how to
use the Spec 20 and also learn the relationship between absorbance and transmittance. Percent
transmittance is the amount of light entering the sample in the cuvette divided by the amount of light
leaving the sample, multiplied by 100. This percent can then be converted to absorbance, which is a
measure of the capacity of a substance to absorb light of a specified wavelength (Absorbance). It is
converted by

Martha Simpson Court Case Essay
Everyone has heard of the OJ Simpson court case a rich and famous man is accused of murdering his
ex wife and despite an overwhelming amount of evidence presented against him, he somehow
manages to be found not guilty. Many people find themselves wondering how that could possibly
happen. Was his defense team simply that good? Were there mistakes made? Was he actually
innocent? Simpson s case is not the only one that has yielded such a strange outcome because of his
status and stellar defense team, and certainly not the only court case to cause such an uproar in the
media. Martha Stewart s 2001 case, Scott Peterson s 2004 case, and Lorena Bobbitt s 1994 case are all
examples of court trials that sparked interest in the eye of America.

Stabile mentions that a lot of the publications focused on Martha Stewart at this time talked about how
poorly she would do in jail and how tough the transition period would be for her because of her
personality and persona as a woman who combines a sort of homemaker vibe with a high powered
business woman.
Martha Stewart s defense attorney was a man named Robert Morvillo, a man who had represented
high profile clients such as Merrill Lynch and Amerada Hess. He has been described as one of the city
s savviest white collar criminal defense attorneys for more than three decades (Smith, Can This Man
Save Martha? ). One of Morvillo s biggest rebuttals in the Stewart case was bringing up the fact that if
Stewart were really as smart and business savvy as the prosecutor will try to make her seem by
bringing up her years as a stockbroker, which should have made her realize that the sales of her stock
were illegal, then why would she risk her entire company and image over a sale that would have
provided her with a miniscule amount of money in comparison to what she already makes (Smith)?
Stewart being a household name obviously meant that she had plenty of supporters, but also plenty of
opposition. People have all kinds of reasons for whether they like or dislike a certain celebrity. In

The Evolution Of Modern Cattle Breeding
INTRODUCTION:
Modern cattle breeding increasingly involves the widespread use of advanced reproductive
technologies, including artificial insemination (AI) and multiple ovulation embryo transfer (MOET),
frequently with the germplasm of elite international sires and dams selected through individual and
progeny performance recording schemes. These technologies facilitate the rapid worldwide
multiplication of offspring from elite animals to assist the propagation of genes that improve milk
yield, meat production and other desirable traits. However rapid propagation of desirable genes is
accompanied by simultaneous propagation of genetic mutations that may results in production losses
and animal welfare problems, such as Citrullinaemia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Incidence of heterozygotes for citrullinemia has been estimated at less than 0.5% among U.S.
Holsteins cattle.
Harper and co workers have reported citrullinemia in the Friesian cattle breed (Friesian are a breed of
dairy cattle identical to the Holstein breed commonly used in the United States) in Australia.
Bovine citrullinemia was not a useful marker for milk, fat and protein production because 1) the
frequency of the defective allele was low and 2) within family differences was non significant
between normal and heterozygous half sisters (Roger, 1998).
Pathogenesis:
Citrullinemia is an inborn error of metabolism due to a deficiency of the urea cycle enzyme
argininosuccinate synthetase. The affected animals have liver AS mRNA levels at less than 5% of
controls due to a single base pair mutation (Dennis, 1989). This metabolic disorder was first identified
in humans and later in dogs and
Friesian calves (Odalys, 2009). The genetic disorder results in a deficiency in arginino succinate
synthetase, leading to enzymatic disruption of the urea cycle.
Argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS, EC 6.3.4.5) is a urea cycle enzyme which is expressed at high
levels in the liver. The enzyme catalyzes the conversion of citrulline, aspartate, and ATP to yield
argininosuccinate, the immediate precursor of arginine (Husson, 2003). The mutation responsible for
citrullinemia has been characterized as a single base substitution (C T) in exon 5

Walls In Ronald Reagan s Mending Wall
Walls are a thing that the world knows far too well. People that live by walls tend to dislike the very
wall they live by. I believe that walls are a terrible thing for the world to go through again. Walls
separate friends and family. They also stop the transport of goods from other countries from being
exchanged. Nature even disapproves of walls. Giant walls create giant blockages for people.
Walls separate friends and family from being together and having fun. In Robert Frost s Mending Wall

neighbors. Ronald Reagan s Tear Down This Wall is about taking down a wall that separates a country

Walls stop goods being transported from place to place. In Reagan s Tear Down This Wall people in
East Germany cannot give things to people in West Germany. Also in Frost s Mending Wall the
neighbors cannot exchange apples and pines. The walls block transportation of goods as much as they
block people from each other. Nature itself even disapproves of man made walls.
Nature is a very powerful force beyond human comprehension, let alone control. But at spring
mending time we find them there, (Robert Frost). This means that nature and time are trying to tear
the wall down to reunite the neighbors. Walls are not a natural feature of the Earth, they are man
made. The force of nature doesn t like to be trifled with, it will destroy the walls and make sure they
are not rebuilt. I believe that walls need to be destroyed from the face of this Earth.
Some people state that walls are a good thing because they keep the villains out. That may be true, but
walls are causing more harm than good. Walls keep not only villains out, but they also keep out the
heroes or innocent people that have done nothing wrong. Walls are also a waste of time, money and
resources. Walls being created are sure to be torn down and all of that time is wasted. I think that walls
should not be a thing we have to think about, whether it be the present or the

International Students Cope With Eating American Cuisine...
Summary Paragraph: One of the many issues that international students face is coping with American
food. With food being linked to culture, international students must face one of the hardest tasks when
coming to America, eating someone else s culture while neglecting their own. In this research project,
I will investigate how international students cope with eating American cuisine or what measures they
take to avoid it. Introduction: Nothing represents a culture better than food. Food is the fastest way for
people to bond and experience one another s culture. Thousands of students travel from international
colleges and universities. These people spend most of their life eating different foods, foods that they
are accustomed to and are naturally born to like. Before starting college, I never gave any thought of
how international students feel about consuming food of another culture for entire year or in some
cases, for multiple years. This is what gave me the idea to study the culture of international students,
including their practices and daily routines. According to The Kansas State Collegian [daily
newspaper at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas], international students attending the
University share a fear of gaining weight from eating American food. American food is portrayed to
them as greasy and not very diverse . Tang, an international student, who attends KSU claims that in
China, her friends would worry for her weight, making her watch what she

The Fundamental Law Of Nature And Government
In this essay I will be arguing that the prerogative is a right that is needed by the executive branch in
order to fulfill the fundamental law of nature and government: the preservation of all of its members.
So long as the fiduciary grant is meant to achieve this goal it has the right to be exercised at the
discretion of its user. This argument will discuss the nature of the prerogative, its necessity, and its
justification for use. This will be supported with evidence from Locke s Second Treatise of
Government. The prerogative is not an abusive instrument that is meant to subverts the laws society; it
is a tool meant to adhere with utmost urgency to the fundamental law of society: doing what is best for
the people and their property. It is meant to ensure that not even its own laws can do harm to the
citizens it so righteously protects. The enshrinement of this ideal is founded on the social contract all
members of civil society enter into when they become a part of society. This contract is created from
something as well; the law that governed man in its original state of nature, reason. Locke asserts that
man was born into the world in a perfect state of freedom to order his own actions. He is capable of
reciprocal jurisdiction without consent from any outside influence. Abiding by the law of nature he
came to find that all men were independent and equal by divine will. Since God had created all men
they would be his property, and thus all would be held in the same

Nafta And The United Atlantic Free Trade Agreement
Introduction
In 1990, Mexico approached the US with a trade agreement to improve the Mexican economy through
a bilateral agreement that would benefit both parties (Villarreal 1 3). Negotiations birthed the North
Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), in 1994, which included three countries Mexico, America,
and Canada. Since its inception, NAFTA has played an instrumental role in improving the economy of
its member states (Thompson 121). Using this agreement, Mexico aimed to attract foreign investments
and improve its economic performance in the same regard. For example, it strived to create new job
opportunities and find new markets for its products (Thompson 121). These needs emanated from a
period of economic slump that hit the Mexican economy in the 1980s and 1990s. These poor
economic conditions had caused economic desperation in Mexico (Hufbauer 51 52). The main
expectation of approaching the US for a bilateral trade agreement was to increase investor confidence
in the country and improve its economic fortunes in the same regard (Villarreal 1 3). Other expected
outcomes included improved export diversification, increased wage rates (for local workers), and
increased sophistication of the local workforce (Thompson 121 122). Over time, Mexico hoped that
the NAFTA agreement would also help it to reduce wage differentials with America. Consequently,
NAFTA would affect the economy of the US Mexico border in multiple ways. Besides the economic
advantages of the agreement,

The Literary And Pop Culture Vampire Of The 1950s
The Literary and Pop Culture Vampire of the 1950s
The following paper illustrates the cultural function of vampire legends and beliefs in the context of
literature and pop culture of the 1950s. Using the following film and novel, Curse of the Undead
(1959) and I Am Legend (1954) to analyze the cultural function of vampire during this era. The paper
uses historical references of 1950s to depict hidden meanings portrayed in the novel and film.
Themes of threatening external invasion were paramount in Curse of the Undead (1959) and I Am
Legend (1954). In addition, the metaphor of disease happens to appear in both film and novel.
Interpretive elements of the Cold War are present amongst the literary and pop culture vampire which
presents the vampire as diseased human, and, or vampire as victim of nuclear war.
Curse of the Undead (1959) can be interpreted as anti communism propaganda. The film is a
composite of western and horror film, although it does not directly state, the vampire is casted as the
communist disease. The disease metaphor relates the vampire to the spread of Communism infecting
the America way of life. In a testimony in front of the HUAC (House Un American Activities
Committee), FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover used a disease metaphor to discuss the communist threat.
This metaphor became part of cold war rhetoric. Hoover states that:
Victory will be assured once communists are identified and exposed, because the public will take the
first step of quarantining

Exploring Creative Potential And Their Relationship With...
One study used a measurement of interviewing the parent and child, along with different
questionnaires, to analyze creative potential and its relationship with having an imaginary companion,
if there were any gender differences, and whether children would be more likely to have a negative
self image. M. Taylor interviewed both children and their parents and demonstrated that the parents of
younger children seemed more aware of their child having an imaginary companion, while only 20%
of parents with children aged 6 to 7 knew, supporting study by Hurlock (1932). As cited in
Manosevitz, a study done by Schmechel found direct questioning of the child about their imaginary
companions had a higher occurrence (50%) compared to parental report (31%) (Manosevitz, 1977).
Further suggesting that parental report alone is not affective in measurement of the presence of
imaginary companions. In addition to the interview multiple questionnaires including the Activity
Questionnaire, Creative Functioning Test, the Unusual Uses test, Self Image Inventory, and a
questionnaire about imaginary companions were administered. Results found that having an imaginary
companion was related to two out of three estimates of creative potential, contrary to Manosevitz
findings, and having an imaginary companion was correlated with a lower self image (Hoff, 2005).

The Disitive And Negative And Positive Consequences Of...
2 Living in a very technology based world can pose both negative and positive consequences. Some
negative consequences can be children looking up to social media celebrities that are not good role
models, and some positive factors may include computer based programs to help better children s
education. I will be talking about both negative and positive Sociocultural Factors in society ,and how
we can potentially better the circumstances at hand. I am going to get the negative aspects at hand, out
of the way so we can end on a better/positive note. Social Media has made a huge uproar a fair few
years now, and with that being said, social media Influencers emerged from it. Social media celebrities
are mostly known in the YouTube world, Twitter, and Instagram are other examples. As they have a
pretty big fan base, and are loved by many, I do not feel like some should have a young audience. I
think it is normal to look up to someone as I did when I was an adolescent (around 13 or 14), but I do
not feel like it is ok to look up to someone who is not genuine. My advice to a parent who has a child
who watches Jake Paul (for example), personally, I would very carefully monitor their browser history
or get them involved in a new hobby instead of watching YouTube videos all day. I also feel like it ll

The Roaring Twenties And The Jazz Age
The Roaring Twenties
Daily Life
The 1920s were called the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age in North America, the Golden Age
Twenties in Europe and Années folles by French speakers all because this era was a period of
sustained economic prosperity with emphasis in each name of the era s social, artistic and cultural
change.
A time when there was a revolution in almost every part of daily human life where more and more
people were moving from the countryside to the city in search of wealth and in order to raise their
standard of living.
While many countries enjoyed this economic prosperity, the United States was the one that prospered
the most.

Many more women were also entering the workforce.
During the early 1920s, there was a peak in the membership of the Ku Klux Klan of four to five
million members, meaning that ideas of white supremacy were also at a high.
The Immigration Act of 1924 restricted immigration and many nationalities were restricted or even
banned.
Fashion
The 1920s was when women, especially younger women, first abandoned the more restricting
fashions from prior years and began to wear more comfortable clothes such as short skirts or trousers
that utilized the abundance of cotton and wool and new fastening methods such as buttons or zippers.
Woman also had more functional clothing and some styles were referred to as being a more masculine
figure because of flattened breasts and hips within clothing and short hairstyles to fit under popular
hats such as the close fitting cloche hat.
Men also changed from highly formal clothes and even began to wear athletic clothing for the first
time.
Throughout the Roaring Twenties men wore short suit jackets, high waisted jackets often worn with
belts and short jackets with two or three buttons and more loose athletic wear such as sweaters and
short trousers or knickers.
The older, more formal long jackets were only used for formal occasions and the most formal men s
suit was black or midnight blue worsted (high quality yarn) swallow tailed coat trimmed with satin
and a matching pair of trousers.

China Pollution
China s Pollution Problem
China, one of the worlds largest industrial powers, is now facing a difficult situation. China s
industries rely largely on coal power which emits harmful gases, causing intense air pollution. The
Chinese government, in fear that the country would fall in a recession, has not done much to stop
these industries, so China has become the second largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. The
types of pollution created by this include air pollution and water pollution, both of which are harmful
to people and wildlife. China s problem has become the world s problem. Nitrogen oxides and sulfur
oxides disgorged by coal fired power plants fall as acid rain on Seoul and Tokyo, and much of the
particulate pollution in Los ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And the country is pushing equally hard to build nuclear reactors and the most efficient types of coal
power plants. As China made great efforts to dominate renewable energy technologies, it has the
advantage of being the world s largest market for power equipment. The government spends heavily to
upgrade the electricity grid, committing $45 billion in 2009 alone and state owned banks provide
generous financing. China s commitment to renewable energy is expensive. Although costs are falling
steeply through mass production, wind energy is still 20 to 40 percent more expensive than coal fired
power and solar power is still at least twice as expensive as coal. The Chinese government charges a
renewable energy fee to all electricity users and the fee increases residential electricity bills by 0.25
percent to 0.4 percent, but for industrial users of electricity, the fee doubled in November, 2010, to
roughly 0.8 percent of the electricity bill. The fee revenue goes to companies that operate the
electricity grid, to make up the cost difference between renewable energy and coal fired power.
Renewable energy fees are not yet high enough to affect China s competitiveness even in energy
intensive industries, said the chairman of a Chinese industrial company, who asked not to be identified
because of the political sensitivity of electricity rates in China. Grid operators are unhappy because
they are reimbursed for the extra cost of buying renewable energy instead of coal fired

The Federal Reserve Act And The Central Bank Essay
The Fed

FA16.ECON201.142953.ONLINE 2ND 12WK
The Federal Reserve System is often referred to as the Fed. It serves as the nation s central bank and
arguably plays the most crucial role in the U.S. economy. It is the most important regulatory agency in
the U.S. monetary system and is usually considered the monetary authority. The Fed has several
responsibilities and performs several functions. There are a few theories documented that challenge
whether or not the Federal Reserve System exists the way it is defined.
The Fed was created by Congress to help promote a safe and sound monetary and financial system for
our nation. The Fed was established by the Federal Reserve Act, signed on December 13, 1913, by
President Woodrow Wilson. The Federal Reserve Act states in its opening paragraph An Act To
provide for the establishment of Federal reserve banks, to furnish an elastic currency, to afford means
of rediscounting commercial paper, to establish a more effective supervision of banking in the United
States, and for other purposes. There are seven members, known as the Federal Reserve Board of
Governors, in Washington D.C. They are appointed by the President and approved by the Senate. The
Fed also includes twelve regional Federal Reserve district banks located throughout the nation based
on economic consideration and trade regions that existed in 1913. The twelve Federal Reserve district
banks have twenty five branches. At the time, the Federal

appetent soul. It propels many to leap despite the uncertainty of having wings, hopeful that the gusts
of wind would suffice and carry the weight of their lives. An infatuation with the wonders of flight as
a form of escape, is frequently juxtaposed with the desire to fight, choosing confrontation by
remaining on the ground and facing the problems at hand. However, this fight or flight response, as it

Mr. Smith had seen the rose petals, heard the music, and leaped on into the air Reyes Luna 3
(Morrison 9). He had lived and seen the true colors of the world, heard the voices of those who spoke
and had rejected it, the same way they all had rejected him...and chose flight instead. While bystanders
stood silent and in disbelief, a character is introduced by drawing a parallel with her personality to her
social interactions. Choosing to break the stillness of the happening with song. O Sugarman done fly
away, Sugarman done gone, Sugarman cut across the sky, Sugarman gone home... (Morrison 6). Truly
Mr. Robert had in a distorted way accomplished something, he had gained one way ticket back home.
Paradoxically, the end of his life marked the beginning of a new, as if by design, it was the same day
as Milkman s birth...the last character to take flight. The first manifestation of the metaphor of flight
was as a means of escape from life itself. Arguably, Mr. Smith had given up on the world and felt that
there was only one solution for all his problems, to fly away from them all. However, this merely
showcases the cliché definition of what it means to fly. The next case comes into fruition in the
character of Pilate, who introduces a new elucidation to the metaphor. From the distinctive undertones

There were many cases throughout their time where Hooke would accuse Newton of publishing his

go into hiding for many years to avoid the embarrassment. Eventually, through the help of other
scientists such as Halley, Newton slowly gained more credit

determine what has helped form us into who we are. We cannot define our self by our others see us,

I do not feel there is a way that the same person can exist at different times, at least here on earth.
There is one person, per body, that has one soul. Once the physical body dies, then the person s soul
lives on. I guess someone could look at a person exising at different times, such as their personality
traits and qualities in their children. I have heard many say, Your daughter is so funny and has the
same personality as her father. Does that mean that in a sense, my husband is existing at different
times in himself and through my daughter? I m not sure. There is one way for sure that the same
person can exist at different times, and that is during life here on earth and then after death when the
soul moves on to either heaven or hell, depending on the the life choices the person made while living.

time I was 12 all of my siblings had moved out. It was just my parents and I. At that time we had a

technology brought into play. They weren t aware of the dangers that could arise from leaving an
unsupervised child on the internet. A large portion of parents fall into any of the following categories,
they re too busy to check their child s internet usage, they don t know how to check their child s
internet usage, or they simply believe that their child knows enough about internet safety and they can
just assume that their child will seek help to parents if anything were to occur. Modern day America

dangers of the internet when it comes down to their children being able to access it. In some cases
parents believe that their child couldn t be susceptible to the dangers of child predators online. They
often trust that their child will come to them in any problem. Realistically that could fail in so many

Social And Economic Causes And Disadvantages Of Homelessness

because this is a group in society that is sometimes overlooked and underrepresented. Additionally, I
felt like the social and economic factors of this group is unique and the accessibility or barriers to
information can heavily impact the economic mobility of people in this user group. In the article, Are
the economically poor information poor? Does the digital divide affect the homeless and access to

information seeking behavior, their sources of information, and how useful the Internet is as a means

these causes include lack of affordable housing, poverty, unemployment, domestic violence, mental

The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People By Dr. Covey
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen Covey outlines seven behaviors of a
successful leader. He called it Principle Centered Leadership (2000, p. 13). The seven habits as
described by Dr. Covey are: 1. Be proactive 2. Begin with the end in mind 3. Put first things first 4.
Think win/win 5. Seek first to understand... then to be understood 6. Synergize 7. Sharpen the Shaw
The attached profile sheet reflects a panoramic view of my alignment to some of those principles. The
seven habits are a way of thinking, living and doing that is consistent (Harvey, 2015) with what Covey
describes as Principle centered living (Covey, 2000, p. 59). The seven habits profile sheet measures
how we see, perceive our actions and attitudes towards ourselves and towards others. The first
category measure in the profile sheet is the Emotional bank account , which is Covey s representation
of the emotional units that can be deposited or withdrawn in our relationship with others. My score in
this category was 12 out of 18 possible points. This score places me slightly above average, which
means I keep a very small balance in my emotional bank account. As a leader, I need to do a better job
at keeping a higher balance between my emotional deposits and withdrawals by, for example,
apologizing more often when I make a mistake, and offend a friend or colleague, including my own
subordinates. The second category measured by the seven habits profile sheet is Life balance ,

For example, an older person who was hard to get along with is more likely to lack support than the
cheerful old person who gets along well with family and neighbours (Peil, 1991). All these are
important variables, which determine whether individuals will receive adequate care and support from
family and society. It is evident from the various literature that, very little attention has been paid to
older people of modern industrializing societies of the world. In Nigeria for example, as well as in
most developing countries, the need to plan for the welfare of older persons has received very little
attention. There are clear evidences of lack of formal social support services for older people in
Nigeria, such as Social Securiy, Pension, Health Insurance Scheme, Old Peoples Home, etc. One of
the explanatory factors arises from the belief that the existing extended family system generally
protects and provides for the welfare of old people in rural and agricultural societies. Hence, where an
older person is childless, his/her brothers or sisters or even the children of his siblings are believed to
be responsible for his/her maintenance. This may not be unconnected with why most policies,
programmes and projects in the developing countries such as Nigeria have been concentrated on the
children and the youths at the expense of older persons in the country. Both national and international
organizations are seen working tirelessly

Sigmund Freud, Women and Child Abuse

questions. These two questions are; did Freud sexually abuse children and did Freud have a personal
vendetta against women?
Life and Times Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 to a Jewish Family and grew up in Freiberg,

Many people believe Freud engaged in sexual abuse of children as a part of his studies. His studies on
the theories of personality are based upon five stages of development in a child from birth until
adulthood. All the theories are centered on specific erogenous zones or particular body parts that are
sensitive to sexual stimulation (Stevenson, 1996). Needs, as noted by Freud, which need to be met
during each of these stages of development are present from the moment of birth. If the needs are not
met or if the needs are overly met, the child will experience frustration or overindulgence issues
(Stevenson, 1996). In addition to the issues of frustration or overindulgence, should the child become
fixated upon a particular stage the methods the child uses to obtain satisfaction for that stage will
affect the child throughout adulthood (Stevenson, 1996). How did Freud identify these theories? Did
Freud sexually assault his young patients? From studies that have been conducted on Freud s research
the findings show that Freud abandoned his seduction theory when he began to realize that the
accounts of sexual abuse by parents were not true. In fact, Freud noted that these accounts were most
probably due to the patient s repressed sexual desires for the

Economic History Of Israel And Saudi Arabia Essay

Economics 191

Economic History of Israel and Saudi Arabia Israel and Saudi Arabia are two countries in close
proximity to each other, yet seem to be different in almost every metric. Saudi Arabia has a $744
Billion GDP, while Israel only $290 Billion (The World Bank), yet when breaking the GDP into GDP
per capita, Saudi Arabia lags behind Israel at with a GDP per capita of $25, 961 whereas Israel is at
$36,051. Israel and Saudi Arabia both became economic powerhouses of the Middle East, while
remaining vastly different from each other in terms of their institutions. Their histories are unique,
illustrating various ways a country can develop. Israel as a country is quite new, only 67 years old.
Israel was founded in 1948 after being given to the Jewish people by Great Britain. Soon after Israel
declared independence, all of the pseudo governmental Jewish institutions that were set up during the
period under British rule, combined to form government departments. However, due to the state of its
economy as well the more socialist leanings of the main political party, in the beginning there was
strong government intervention.
Following its founding, Israel s economy was jumpstarted through a large amount of foreign aid as
well as immigration. Immigration was a pillar of the founding of the Jewish state with Holocaust
survivors coming in droves from Europe to Israel. After just three years of it s founding, Israel

Amphetamines are stimulants that dramatically affect the central nervous system. They have a
common medical use and are present in medications that treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,

symptoms of these health disorders.
What s the Danger of Amphetamines?
The amphetamine drug is still dangerous despite its medical properties. Like many other prescription

Stimulant drugs like amphetamines and crystal meth excite the central nervous system, thus giving the

Recovery from Amphetamine Addiction
Addiction to an amphetamine drug is extremely complicated. It s common for people to begin using
them to do better in school or for increased focus at work. However, this means that addictions to
amphetamines are heavily psychological.
In order to untangle an amphetamine drug addiction, a person likely has to go through a combination
of drug addiction therapy and psychotherapy. This is especially true since many users of
amphetamines are teens and young adults. Addiction treatment and psychotherapy will help them
manage their mental health and learn coping skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.
Despite its complications, recovery from amphetamine addiction is possible. Acknowledging and

If you don t want the kids watching YouTube videos at all or only at certain times of the day, give their
laptops a password protected, Standard or Limited user account and use the settings menu to restrict
what they can do and when. This way, if you re trying to download an HD film, you can make sure
their computers are set to allow web access only until, say, 10pm and start your download after that.
To change your broadband connections bandwidth priority, go to the settings menu for your router and
locate QoS. Move Skype calls, instant messaging, online gaming and other bandwidth heavy tasks
down the list and promote downloads. Check how long a download should take

Descriptive Essay About Ketchup
Order of four burgers, three fries, and four lemonades! The cashier announces. Shannon is already
sitting down so I grab her tray for her. I stop by the condiment table, set both trays down gently as can
be. Imitating what I have seen at every cookout, I lift Shannon s top bun, squirt about half of the
container of ketchup, and draw a small smiley face in mustard, although Shannon makes a frowny
face usually. I cover her fries in ketchup as well. What monster could possibly prefer ketchup doused
fries?! I make a small mountain of ketchup in my fry boat. The walk back to the table is treacherous. A
maze of tables and half pushed in chairs tease, as I twist and turn making it to the table. Shannon
doesn t say thank you for perfectly replicating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My long legs cannot take it. I whine as we get to the car. Shannon and Mia climb into the back to
appease me. The parking lot has thinned out quite a bit since lunch. The small town has grocery store
two minutes from the beach. Everyone goes their own way to get what they want. I get myself a light
blue Gatorade, peanut M Ms and some cheese crackers. Passing the fruit, I decide to get a few more
apples. We all place our items on the conveyer belt. Chips, drinks, fruit, and miscellaneous treats are
scanned and bagged, coming to the total of $34.09. I swipe my parents credit card, they won t mind,
right?
How are the groceries and two grown young women going to fit in the back? Shannon complains.
Here give me the bags, I keep my feet up anyways. I reach behind and grab the food. This was a bad
choice. Why? because I love eating while we are in the car! There is nothing exciting to do, so how
better to pass the time than eat? I am in charge of giving Brooklyn directions because she is too good
for a GPS. Obviously.
Three rights, two lefts and then we are back. I report. But the turns are about 10 miles apart.
Do not doubt me Lilan! I will have us back in no time. Brooklyn loves to call me that, even though my
name is just

Famous Thinkers
Famous Thinkers: Steven Spielberg Grace Hopper Famous thinkers can come from all walks of life
and can be from our generation and others. Reaching goals can be done in many ways. The similarity
famous thinkers is that they are all share creative minds and are all creative thinkers. Creative ideas
are the foundation of creative process (Goodman Fritchie, 2011). Famous thinkers base their ideas on
searching for solutions to problem, need, or the way others think or view specific issues. When I think
of famous thinkers a vast number of people come to mind. Two thinkers that genuinely stand out to
me are Steven Spielberg Grace Hopper. My article will provide more details on the influence and

Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He also received
the Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award and the French Legion of Honor. In
2005 he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
Grace Hopper
Grace Hopper, a computer programmer, is known for helping develop and lead the team that created
the first computer language compiler, which was a precursor to the widely used COBOL language.
She also became an admiral in the U.S. Navy.
Grace Hopper also known as Grace Brewster Murray went to college at Vassar and Yale University to
study math and received a master s degree in mathematics. While studying at Yale Grace taught at
Vassar. She was the first women to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics at Yale. Her education brought her
too many opportunities including an associate professor at Vassar. She joined the U.S. Naval Reserve
around World War II and was commissioned as a lieutenant.
Grace Hopper went to Harvard University and was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation
Project. This is where she learned to program a Mark I computer and later worked with the Mark II
and Mark III computers. The term computer bug had come from an experience Grace had at Harvard
after finding a moth that shorted out the Mark II. She was not the author of computer bug but played
her part. She also led the team that created the first compilers for computer languages.

The Value Of A Company s Earning And Profitability
QUESTION 1: RELATIVE PROFITABILITY
There are several ways to measure a company s earning and profitability. Return on Equity ( ROE )
and Return on Assets ( ROA ) are, historically, among the most widely used measures to assess
relative profitability in the banking industry. The technique used in this paper is based on Dr. Cole s
ROE Model. This model helps demystify ROE and ROA; and focuses and analyzes the main factors
that are driving profitability for a bank. For this paper, selected financial data for East West Bank (
EWB or the Bank ) and its Peer Group ( peers ) was obtained from the December 31, 2013 Uniform
Bank Performance Report ( UBPR ) and various EWB documents ; and from interviews conducted
with EWB management . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, EWB s Equity Multiplier ( EM ) is also higher than peers (10.09x vs. 8.88x).
EWB s higher ROE compared to peers highlights a higher rate of return on shareholder s equity;
nonetheless, it does not provide the complete picture in itself. Decomposing the ROE to better
understand the reason for change, it was determined that 42% of EWB s 2013 ROE was due to
leverage, i.e., lower relative equity.
Since ROA growth itself will not yield important insights, nine variables have been identified,
reflecting variances (Bank vs. Peer) for each in Exhibit 1. The following four key drivers out of the
nine have been examined below, to provide a more detailed picture:
1. PROFIT STRENGTHS (HIGHEST POSITIVE VARIANCE)
A. YIELD ON EARNING ASSET ( EA )
Over the past 3 years, EWB s yield on EA has decreased 66 bps from 2011 to 2013 (Exhibit 2). This is
essentially owing to the low interest rate environment and the lower average yield on non covered
loans . EWB s average yield is above peers (Exhibit 1), as EWB used funds more efficiently; placing a
larger proportion of EA (82.47% vs. 68.63%) in higher yielding assets (i.e., Gross Loans and Fed
Funds Sold Resales); as illustrated in Exhibit 3. EWB s higher yield on gross loans was attributable to
the interest income from the covered loans portfolio, which is due to the additional accretion
accounted for under ASC 310 30. As the covered loan balance continues to decrease, the overall yield

Personal Statement . It Was In The Spring Of 2013, In A
Personal Statement
It was in the Spring of 2013, in a remote village in Malaysia, when I realized that I want to pursue a
meaningful career in the field of energy access and human development. I spent around 10 days in the
pristine forests, rivers and mountains of Buayan village, as part of my master s course Energy and
Poverty Solutions field trip. The objective of our trip was to conduct field assessments and explore
solutions to improve the energy access situation in the village. Buayan had a micro hydro energy
system that had broken down and stayed idle for months, leaving many in the community without
electricity. Some of the locals adapted to the new situation, while others operated loud and polluting
generators that relied on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The PhD in science studies at the department of Sociology of the University of Lancaster, a
distinguished program in a top 10 university fits well into these ambitions of mine and hopefully it
will enable me to acquire the knowledge to continue uncovering the complexities between the two
fields.
I believe that my education, research, work and volunteering experience spanning across the fields of
systems engineering, renewable energy, energy policy, energy access and development also align with
these goals and have prepared me well to undertake the challenges of a PhD.
I hold a research Master s Degree in Engineering Systems and Management from Masdar Institute of
Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi, UAE, a graduate university established in collaboration with
MIT that focuses on issues of sustainability. During my degree, I have worked as a research assistant
at the Research Center for Renewable Energy Mapping at Masdar Institute. My thesis focused on
modelling the economic viability of utility solar photovoltaic power plants in Abu Dhabi through a
spatial techno assessment. Alongside my master s studies and research, I was also a teaching assistant
on three courses.

  • 2. Show Boat History On December 27, 1927 when the premiere of Show Boat opened in the spectacular new Ziegfeld Theater, producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. had brought something new to Broadway. As Katherine Leigh Axtell writes, the show was neither an operetta nor a musical comedy, neither a vaudeville nor a revue. For the first time, composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II seamlessly integrated plot, character, music, and dance into a modern musical production starting a new genre of musical, which is often called musical theater or book musical. Show Boat also brought serious themes that left the audience unable to react the way they had to the previous Broadway musicals. For the first time, there was a breakthrough in racial integration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this treatment, pathogenic microbes (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasitic worms) must be removed or reduced to harmless levels. It is well known that in any community, at any time, there are always small numbers of people who are either manifestly ill, in some stage of illness but not demonstratively so, or healthy carriers of diseases. Together, these are indications of a community s normal background of pathogenic microorganisms in which feces are in the sewage. Both are based on the stabilization or neutralization or organic waste by biological action. Although pathogenic microorganisms are partially removed in the settling process and filtration and aeration mechanically remove others, it is the process of chlorination that destroys the great majority of organisms. • 4. Natural Selection Theory Evolution, before being called so, was first referred to by Charles Darwin in On the Origins of Species as descent with modification. This is a very good general explanation for what evolution is. Darwin believed that over long periods of time, animals traits changed and developed. This strayed from the traditional beliefs at the time which was that all species were created by God and did not change. He also believed that all animals were somehow related. He supported this belief with the idea that there were transitional species that existed as different animals evolved. His specific theory was that evolution occurred by means of a mechanism called natural selection. The idea of natural selection was essentially that some traits were more ... Later, it was realized that fossils found deep in the ground were unlike those that were currently alive. 75 years before Darwin first published his essay on evolution, studies of stratigraphy led James Hutton to believe that there was gradual change amongst species just like there has been gradual geological change on Earth. Commercial television is entertaining, educating and informative and tries to fulfil viewer s wishes of what they want to watch. British audience has been able to choose what they watch since 1954, when government published the Act of Television which allowed the creation of the first independent television in the United Kingdom. Lord Reith summed up the general attitude of BBC s management to television when he told that television will be of no importance in your lifetime or mine (Williams, 2010:144). General opinion in the BBC was that television would not become as successful as radio. As well as BBC management, government did not find television being as important as radio. On the contrary to the BBC s management, there were people who saw future in commercial television. One of those people was Norman Collins who became a director general of Independent Television who left the BBC and started to campaign commercial television (Crisell, 1997: 78). BBC s broadcasting developing slowly because of the shortage of technical knowledge which gave a reason for government to legitimize commercial television which would also give jobs many advertisers and television people. Commercial television campaign was also able to persuade the government that competition would make television better as companies had to give their best to make the viewer to watch their channel. Another reason which made commercial lobby successful, was the circumstance that important members of government including the Prime Minister, Churchill, were not prepared to defend the BBC (Curran, Seaton, 2010:154). • 9. Discovery Of The Concentration Of Phosphate The goal of the lab was to discover the concentration of phosphate in various colas in order to help with a project for a major cola company. Before we could accomplish this final goal, a Spec 20 was used to test three colors of food colorings. A Spec 20 is an instrument used to measure the intensity of a light beam before and after it passes through a sample and compares these two intensities (What does a Spectronic 20 measure). The instrument is able to measure the percent transmittance and absorbance of a given sample. It works by taking light of various wavelengths and passing them through a monochromator. A monochromator is a device that transmits a wavelength of light. The machine diffracts the wavelengths. The sample that is placed in a small container, called a cuvette, absorbs various wavelengths. This depends on the particular sampled being tested. The amount of light absorbed is projected by the machine on a screen, in our case, a digital screen (How Does a Spectronic 20 work?). By doing the lab with the food colorings, we were able to properly learn how to use the Spec 20 and also learn the relationship between absorbance and transmittance. Percent transmittance is the amount of light entering the sample in the cuvette divided by the amount of light leaving the sample, multiplied by 100. This percent can then be converted to absorbance, which is a measure of the capacity of a substance to absorb light of a specified wavelength (Absorbance). It is converted by ... These technologies facilitate the rapid worldwide multiplication of offspring from elite animals to assist the propagation of genes that improve milk yield, meat production and other desirable traits. Harper and co workers have reported citrullinemia in the Friesian cattle breed (Friesian are a breed of dairy cattle identical to the Holstein breed commonly used in the United States) in Australia. Bovine citrullinemia was not a useful marker for milk, fat and protein production because 1) the frequency of the defective allele was low and 2) within family differences was non significant between normal and heterozygous half sisters (Roger, 1998). Pathogenesis: Citrullinemia is an inborn error of metabolism due to a deficiency of the urea cycle enzyme argininosuccinate synthetase. The affected animals have liver AS mRNA levels at less than 5% of controls due to a single base pair mutation (Dennis, 1989). This metabolic disorder was first identified in humans and later in dogs and Friesian calves (Odalys, 2009). The genetic disorder results in a deficiency in arginino succinate synthetase, leading to enzymatic disruption of the urea cycle. Argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS, EC 6.3.4.5) is a urea cycle enzyme which is expressed at high levels in the liver. The enzyme catalyzes the conversion of citrulline, aspartate, and ATP to yield argininosuccinate, the immediate precursor of arginine (Husson, 2003). Thousands of students travel from international colleges and universities. These people spend most of their life eating different foods, foods that they are accustomed to and are naturally born to like. • 17. The Fundamental Law Of Nature And Government In this essay I will be arguing that the prerogative is a right that is needed by the executive branch in order to fulfill the fundamental law of nature and government: the preservation of all of its members. So long as the fiduciary grant is meant to achieve this goal it has the right to be exercised at the discretion of its user. This argument will discuss the nature of the prerogative, its necessity, and its justification for use. This will be supported with evidence from Locke s Second Treatise of Government. The prerogative is not an abusive instrument that is meant to subverts the laws society; it is a tool meant to adhere with utmost urgency to the fundamental law of society: doing what is best for the people and their property. It is meant to ensure that not even its own laws can do harm to the citizens it so righteously protects. The enshrinement of this ideal is founded on the social contract all members of civil society enter into when they become a part of society. This contract is created from something as well; the law that governed man in its original state of nature, reason. Locke asserts that man was born into the world in a perfect state of freedom to order his own actions. He is capable of reciprocal jurisdiction without consent from any outside influence. • 18. Nafta And The United Atlantic Free Trade Agreement Introduction In 1990, Mexico approached the US with a trade agreement to improve the Mexican economy through a bilateral agreement that would benefit both parties (Villarreal 1 3). Negotiations birthed the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), in 1994, which included three countries Mexico, America, and Canada. Since its inception, NAFTA has played an instrumental role in improving the economy of its member states (Thompson 121). Using this agreement, Mexico aimed to attract foreign investments and improve its economic performance in the same regard. For example, it strived to create new job opportunities and find new markets for its products (Thompson 121). These needs emanated from a period of economic slump that hit the Mexican economy in the 1980s and 1990s. These poor economic conditions had caused economic desperation in Mexico (Hufbauer 51 52). The main expectation of approaching the US for a bilateral trade agreement was to increase investor confidence in the country and improve its economic fortunes in the same regard (Villarreal 1 3). Other expected outcomes included improved export diversification, increased wage rates (for local workers), and increased sophistication of the local workforce (Thompson 121 122). Using the following film and novel, Curse of the Undead (1959) and I Am Legend (1954) to analyze the cultural function of vampire during this era. The paper uses historical references of 1950s to depict hidden meanings portrayed in the novel and film. Themes of threatening external invasion were paramount in Curse of the Undead (1959) and I Am Legend (1954). In addition, the metaphor of disease happens to appear in both film and novel. Interpretive elements of the Cold War are present amongst the literary and pop culture vampire which presents the vampire as diseased human, and, or vampire as victim of nuclear war. Curse of the Undead (1959) can be interpreted as anti communism propaganda. The film is a composite of western and horror film, although it does not directly state, the vampire is casted as the communist disease. The disease metaphor relates the vampire to the spread of Communism infecting the America way of life. In a testimony in front of the HUAC (House Un American Activities Committee), FBI Director, J. One study used a measurement of interviewing the parent and child, along with different questionnaires, to analyze creative potential and its relationship with having an imaginary companion, if there were any gender differences, and whether children would be more likely to have a negative self image. M. Taylor interviewed both children and their parents and demonstrated that the parents of younger children seemed more aware of their child having an imaginary companion, while only 20% of parents with children aged 6 to 7 knew, supporting study by Hurlock (1932). As cited in Manosevitz, a study done by Schmechel found direct questioning of the child about their imaginary companions had a higher occurrence (50%) compared to parental report (31%) (Manosevitz, 1977). Further suggesting that parental report alone is not affective in measurement of the presence of imaginary companions. In addition to the interview multiple questionnaires including the Activity Questionnaire, Creative Functioning Test, the Unusual Uses test, Self Image Inventory, and a questionnaire about imaginary companions were administered. Results found that having an imaginary companion was related to two out of three estimates of creative potential, contrary to Manosevitz findings, and having an imaginary companion was correlated with a lower self image (Hoff, 2005). And the country is pushing equally hard to build nuclear reactors and the most efficient types of coal power plants. As China made great efforts to dominate renewable energy technologies, it has the advantage of being the world s largest market for power equipment. The government spends heavily to upgrade the electricity grid, committing $45 billion in 2009 alone and state owned banks provide generous financing. China s commitment to renewable energy is expensive. Although costs are falling steeply through mass production, wind energy is still 20 to 40 percent more expensive than coal fired power and solar power is still at least twice as expensive as coal. The Chinese government charges a renewable energy fee to all electricity users and the fee increases residential electricity bills by 0.25 percent to 0.4 percent, but for industrial users of electricity, the fee doubled in November, 2010, to roughly 0.8 percent of the electricity bill. The fee revenue goes to companies that operate the electricity grid, to make up the cost difference between renewable energy and coal fired power. Renewable energy fees are not yet high enough to affect China s competitiveness even in energy intensive industries, said the chairman of a Chinese industrial company, who asked not to be identified because of the political sensitivity of electricity rates in China. It propels many to leap despite the uncertainty of having wings, hopeful that the gusts of wind would suffice and carry the weight of their lives. An infatuation with the wonders of flight as a form of escape, is frequently juxtaposed with the desire to fight, choosing confrontation by remaining on the ground and facing the problems at hand. However, this fight or flight response, as it has been coined, has become an oversimplification of the way humans react in the face of adversity. It fails to recognize that paradoxically, ... While bystanders stood silent and in disbelief, a character is introduced by drawing a parallel with her personality to her social interactions. Arguably, Mr. Smith had given up on the world and felt that there was only one solution for all his problems, to fly away from them all. However, this merely showcases the cliché definition of what it means to fly. The next case comes into fruition in the character of Pilate, who introduces a new elucidation to the metaphor. All these are important variables, which determine whether individuals will receive adequate care and support from family and society. It is evident from the various literature that, very little attention has been paid to older people of modern industrializing societies of the world. In Nigeria for example, as well as in most developing countries, the need to plan for the welfare of older persons has received very little attention. There are clear evidences of lack of formal social support services for older people in Nigeria, such as Social Securiy, Pension, Health Insurance Scheme, Old Peoples Home, etc. One of the explanatory factors arises from the belief that the existing extended family system generally protects and provides for the welfare of old people in rural and agricultural societies. Hence, where an older person is childless, his/her brothers or sisters or even the children of his siblings are believed to be responsible for his/her maintenance. Many people believe Freud engaged in sexual abuse of children as a part of his studies. His studies on the theories of personality are based upon five stages of development in a child from birth until adulthood. All the theories are centered on specific erogenous zones or particular body parts that are sensitive to sexual stimulation (Stevenson, 1996). Needs, as noted by Freud, which need to be met during each of these stages of development are present from the moment of birth. If the needs are not met or if the needs are overly met, the child will experience frustration or overindulgence issues (Stevenson, 1996). In addition to the issues of frustration or overindulgence, should the child become fixated upon a particular stage the methods the child uses to obtain satisfaction for that stage will affect the child throughout adulthood (Stevenson, 1996). How did Freud identify these theories? Did Freud sexually assault his young patients? I am in charge of giving Brooklyn directions because she is too good for a GPS. Obviously. Three rights, two lefts and then we are back. I report. But the turns are about 10 miles apart. Do not doubt me Lilan! I will have us back in no time. Brooklyn loves to call me that, even though my name is just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Famous Thinkers Famous Thinkers: Steven Spielberg Grace Hopper Famous thinkers can come from all walks of life and can be from our generation and others. Reaching goals can be done in many ways. The similarity famous thinkers is that they are all share creative minds and are all creative thinkers. Creative ideas are the foundation of creative process (Goodman Fritchie, 2011). Famous thinkers base their ideas on searching for solutions to problem, need, or the way others think or view specific issues. When I think of famous thinkers a vast number of people come to mind. Two thinkers that genuinely stand out to me are Steven Spielberg Grace Hopper. My article will provide more details on the influence and accomplishments of these great ... Grace Hopper Grace Hopper, a computer programmer, is known for helping develop and lead the team that created the first computer language compiler, which was a precursor to the widely used COBOL language. She also became an admiral in the U.S. Navy. Grace Hopper also known as Grace Brewster Murray went to college at Vassar and Yale University to study math and received a master s degree in mathematics. While studying at Yale Grace taught at Vassar. She was the first women to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics at Yale. Her education brought her too many opportunities including an associate professor at Vassar. She joined the U.S. Naval Reserve around World War II and was commissioned as a lieutenant. Grace Hopper went to Harvard University and was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project. This is where she learned to program a Mark I computer and later worked with the Mark II and Mark III computers. The term computer bug had come from an experience Grace had at Harvard after finding a moth that shorted out the Mark II. She was not the author of computer bug but played her part. She also led the team that created the first compilers for computer languages. Her journey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Value Of A Company s Earning And Profitability QUESTION 1: RELATIVE PROFITABILITY There are several ways to measure a company s earning and profitability. Return on Equity ( ROE ) and Return on Assets ( ROA ) are, historically, among the most widely used measures to assess relative profitability in the banking industry. The technique used in this paper is based on Dr. Cole s ROE Model. This model helps demystify ROE and ROA; and focuses and analyzes the main factors that are driving profitability for a bank. For this paper, selected financial data for East West Bank ( EWB or the Bank ) and its Peer Group ( peers ) was obtained from the December 31, 2013 Uniform Bank Performance Report ( UBPR ) and various EWB documents ; and from interviews conducted with EWB management . ... EWB s higher ROE compared to peers highlights a higher rate of return on shareholder s equity; nonetheless, it does not provide the complete picture in itself. Decomposing the ROE to better understand the reason for change, it was determined that 42% of EWB s 2013 ROE was due to leverage, i.e., lower relative equity. Since ROA growth itself will not yield important insights, nine variables have been identified, reflecting variances (Bank vs. Peer) for each in Exhibit 1. The following four key drivers out of the nine have been examined below, to provide a more detailed picture: 1. PROFIT STRENGTHS (HIGHEST POSITIVE VARIANCE) A. YIELD ON EARNING ASSET ( EA ) Over the past 3 years, EWB s yield on EA has decreased 66 bps from 2011 to 2013 (Exhibit 2). This is essentially owing to the low interest rate environment and the lower average yield on non covered loans . EWB s average yield is above peers (Exhibit 1), as EWB used funds more efficiently; placing a larger proportion of EA (82.47% vs. 68.63%) in higher yielding assets (i.e., Gross Loans and Fed Funds Sold Resales); as illustrated in Exhibit 3. EWB s higher yield on gross loans was attributable to the interest income from the covered loans portfolio, which is due to the additional accretion accounted for under ASC 310 30. As the covered loan balance continues to decrease, the overall yield will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Personal Statement . It Was In The Spring Of 2013, In A Personal Statement It was in the Spring of 2013, in a remote village in Malaysia, when I realized that I want to pursue a meaningful career in the field of energy access and human development. I spent around 10 days in the pristine forests, rivers and mountains of Buayan village, as part of my master s course Energy and Poverty Solutions field trip. The objective of our trip was to conduct field assessments and explore solutions to improve the energy access situation in the village. Buayan had a micro hydro energy system that had broken down and stayed idle for months, leaving many in the community without electricity. Some of the locals adapted to the new situation, while others operated loud and polluting generators that relied on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The PhD in science studies at the department of Sociology of the University of Lancaster, a distinguished program in a top 10 university fits well into these ambitions of mine and hopefully it will enable me to acquire the knowledge to continue uncovering the complexities between the two fields.
