17. On 19 September 2023, as Parliament proceedings shifted to
the new building, the Prime Minister announced the new
name of the old Parliament House, "Samvidhan Sadan"
(Constitution House).
The construction work of the Old Parliament House started
in the year 1921 and was completed in the year 1927.
It was designed by architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert
Baker. This building was originally called 'Council House’
The round shape of the Old Parliament House was inspired
by the Roman historical monument Colosseum. Some Indian
elements like jaali and umbrella were also added to the
design.
A similar, round and pillared structure in India is the 20th
century building Chausath Yogini Temple in Mitauli,
Madhya Pradesh, which inspired the Parliament House.
Mitawali Temple has 64 chambers dedicated to 64 Yoginis.
The old Parliament House will be known as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’
