which is categorized as either Major Depression, Clinical Depression or Major Depressive

day to day issues, and a general lack of interest in family, friends and/or life in general. Over the
years that astounding number has been both a boon to the economy and a ray of hope for sufferers
in the form of antidepressants. One of the first medications introduced as a treatment in the United
States in 1998, was Prozac (Fluoxetine), which is an SSRIs or Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, which
works to balance out the feelings of pleasure and emotions, which is why it was dubbed the
Happy Pill . It was widely touted to be the solution for the masses, however for many who
suffered with severe depression, it was not such a ray of hope. Prozac soon became associated

experiments. The change in temperature would affect the time it took for the Alka Seltzer tablet to

time, we would not be able to see it because the temperatures are off and the dissolve times are not

Martin Jacobi argues the role of misreading in Ian McEwan s Atonement and the consequences of
misreading and reading with preconception. Misreading is the incorrect or misinterpretation of a
reading. In McEwan s Atonement misreading is a key concept that allows Ian McEwanto persuade
readers into believing situations and conclusions that are not confirmed. Jacobi s main argument
examples focuses on the misreading and interpretation of two main characters deaths, Robbie and
Cecilia. The misreading in Atonement causes readers to believe they are dead even though it is not
confirmed. Jacobi further argues that along with misreading reading with preconceptions also leads
to misinterpretation, that when we read we have preconceptions about the novelwhich leads to
assumptions about what will occur. (Jacobi 71) While Jacobi argues the negative of having
preconceptions about a novel, having knowledge and information about A novel and the author can
be beneficial when trying to understand the novel and the why in the novel. Knowing information
about when the novel is set, what was happening during this time can be useful for understanding as
well as useful for avoiding misreadings. Although I agree with Jacobi s argument that misreading
and reading with preconceptions can lead to misinterpretation and wrong conclusions, I do believe
that having information and logical ideas around the literature can be beneficial in many ways.
McIwan in his novel, dramatizes misreadings and uses them to create many misinterpretations and
incorrect conclusions in the readers mind. McEwan uses misreadings in Atonement to persuade us
into believing Robbie and Cecilia are dead, that Robbie is the maniac that Briony described, while
confusing who the true author is.(McEwan, Atonement) Jacobi s argument doesn t only relate to
the misinterpretation of the readers, but also how McIwan uses misreadings in the novel to move
the plot and create conflicts in the novel. These misinterpretations and misinformed conclusions all
lead to Jacobi s argument that misreadings and preconceptions have consequences for the readers.

William and Walton Roberts (2013) defined homelands as places that people have strong feelings
about and are recognized with. Schnell (2000) argued that homelands involve the emotional
bonding of a self conscious group to a particular area of land, attachments that buttress a person s
