One in every seventeen people in America suffers from a mental disorder. These disorders inhibit the
afflicted person from functioning properly and coping normally with daily life. Many afflicted with a
psychological disorder do not exhibit obvious symptoms, as medical advancements have made it
possible for these disorders to be suppressed or even nonexistent. Today, however, harsh stigmas exist
that unfairly categorize those with a mental illness as violent, unfriendly, and abnormal. The media
and federal government are culprits in fabricating the unrealistic depictions of mental disability that
define the portrayal of those who are mentally or psychologically disadvantaged.
The media is and has been one of the strongest outlets of perpetuating negative mental illness
stereotypes. Since the invention of the television and its spread to every American household by the
1960s, television shows have manufactured an image of the mentally disabled as dangerous and
unpredictable . The shows depict the mentally ill as very violent; One in four mentally ill characters
kill someone, and half are portrayed as hurting others . The ways in which mentally disabled are
filmed within a show also differs from the ways that non disabled characters are shot. Studies show
that they are usually filmed alone with close up or extreme shots, reinforcing their isolation and
dislocation from the other characters and from society. In movies, like One Flew Over the

Prior to yesterday s Net Neutrality protest, I have never been to a protest in real life, but have scene
several on the web, social media, or news. Usually, protests are loud, sometimes chaotic and the

The Issue Of Popular Support
The issue of popular support is further connected to terrorist group s specific objectives, or goals. In
general, terrorists motivated by a religious component are often associated with apocalyptic like goals.
Hoffman notes that these apocalyptic goals, are in nature more violent when compared to the often
more tangible political based goals of many secular groups. The association between religiously
motivated terrorist groups and apocalyptic like goals is well known throughout academia. Jessica
Stern s book, Terror in the Name of God further references this connection. She is particularly careful
not to equate these general end of time beliefs to one religion in particular. Instead she notes how such
beliefs often span across multiple religions by noting their presence in various sacred texts across all
three of the major Abrahamic faiths. She further ties back to Hoffman s work when discussing how
apocalyptic like goals often allow for more violence and destruction when compared to other terrorist
objectives (such as forming a new government, or expelling a foreign nation from perceived territory).
While Hoffman notes the specific constituency that secular terrorists must appeal to, Stern ties the lack
of a needed supportive constituency back to religious terrorist goals. Because religiously motivated

The different use of medium is the first indication of their difference. The sculptor of the Bodhisattva
from Gandhara, Fig. 2, was able to carve and sculpt in greater detail because of the Schist that they
used. Schist is darker in color, almost black, smoother in texture and looks harder that sandstone. This
type of medium allowed sculptors to have a totally different style and approach than that of sculptors
from the Mathura region. With the ability of being able to carve even more details comes a totally
different physical look on the sculpture. The faces of the figure are more sculpted and more defined

Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First Amendment
protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as those in western
Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United States . But why
should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good government, promotes the
realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a straightforward legislative approach to speech.
Free speech allows the people to hold their government accountable via the free press. A condition of
a good government is freedom of information, and what has been called the right to know (Garton Ash
78), which is the responsibility of a free press to provide to the people, especially when the
government is not being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to report on public
officials and the government s activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the expense of the people
they are supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public figures activities must be
protected from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a journalist accused of libel
for revealing the truth would [threaten] the informing purpose of the First Amendment (Lewis 51).
