The fact that this is the interpretation of sadomasochism that Angela Carter chose to represent is
important because although the book is set during a time period when feminism was not yet prevalent
in the world, The Bloody Chamber was written after women s suffrage, in 1979. As soon as ten years
after the short story was published several works were also published that went against the Freudian
model of sadomasochism. In Jessica Benjamin s, The Bonds of Love, Benjamin discusses the idea that
women can actually control their own subordination, therefore making the passive partner equally as
dominant as the aggressor, which gets rid of the notion that the dominant partner is always male. In
The Bloody Chamber, we only see the young girl as someone who allows herself to gain no control
over the power dynamic regarding the couple s relationship in general. In fact, the only time we see
the narrator stand up for herself, or even respond to the Marquis comments towards her, is at the very
end of the story when she is stalling her death with the hope that her mother will
