Creation and the Fall Essay
Creation and the Fall
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"1 (Genesis 1:1).
As we look back in history we can see many beginnings, but the beginning referred to in this verse
is a beginning that defies understanding to the extreme. We see one of the most amazing creations in
this world in a newly born child, yet that creation pails in comparison to that of the creation on the
world. Look around you and imagine nothing. That's the way in was before the Lord gave us the
first of many gifts that have been bestowed upon the human race. When you really break it down
you can see that all things are truly created by God. Some may disagree and say that man has
created everything from nails to computers, but the Lord ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The effect of this is a less degradation of the ozone layer! And, as we all know today, a thicker
ozone layer means less short–wave radiation on earth. Less short–wave radiation and less ozone
particles in the lower part of the atmosphere meant longevity for mankind."4 Below is an example
of what the atmosphere might have looked like after the second day.5 "And God said, 'Let the water
under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.' And it was so. God called the dry
ground 'land,' and the gathered waters He called 'seas.' And God saw that it was good" Genesis 1:9–
10.6 Now reading this verse might not conjure up amazing images in your head, but take a look
around you and you will see an amazing world that defies the imagination of mortal man. If God
had just created man and placed him on an empty planet with nothing to see, no mountains, no
bodies of water, no canyons, etc, and asked man to create a world, would we have anything close to
what we see around us today? I dare to say that we would probably still be living on an empty world
all these years later. Only the one true God could create all that we see and hear. Genesis 1:11–13
deals with the creation of plants and trees. To some this may not seem to be all that amazing, but if
you really think about it God was preparing this earth for human inhabitation with all of these
creations. Plants and trees are a staple of life and without them the human race would surly parish.

Understanding Vs. Knowing in Atwood’s Oryx and Crake Essay
It is often simpler to settle for an understanding of the world and people around us instead of trying
to know the truth. Truth has consequences; by knowing too much, one can lose a friend, learn a
deadly secret, or become someone they do not want to be. To express his understanding of himself
and the world around him, Crake in Oryx and Crake uses quote–bearing fridge magnets. One very
important quote is "We understand more than we know". It is important to recognize the difference
between the terms "understand" and "know"; the Oxford English Dictionary defines "to understand"
as to perceive the significance, explanation, or cause of, whereas "to know" is to be absolutely
certain or sure about something. There is certainly a difference, ... Show more content on

However, there are many characteristics that remain uncontrolled in the Crakers, and these people
eventually begin to create art and place both Oryx and Crake in God–like positions in their society:
two things against which Crake had warned. Crake's understanding of biology and psychology leads
the Crakers to initially have none of humanity's flaws. This shows Crake's grand understanding of
biology, but not any knowledge of how these people will soon acquire notions of art, gods, or
symbolism. He has done few trials, and consequently has little evidence to prove that the Children
of Crake will be successful.
Furthermore, Crake is able to understand Jimmy's incredible attraction to Oryx from the first time
they glimpse her on the HottTotts website. He saves her image, possibly with the intentions of one
day finding this girl to use against Jimmy. What Crake understands is Jimmy's love for Oryx, but
what he doesn't know is that Jimmy will choose in the end to not let him and Oryx re–enter the
Paradice Dome. Jimmy accepts that for complete renewal of the human race, not only Crake, but
Oryx as well, must die, "for both have sinned against the potential goodness of humanity" and "she
is a hinge in Crake's attempt to re–enter Paradice" (DiMarco 191). Whereas Jimmy had been known
to Crake to be one to be fearful and easily controlled, this time he takes a powerful stance against
Crake's plan and proves that Crake

A Discussion of Milton’s Theodicy in Paradise Lost
What is free will? Milton explains in Paradise Lost that free will is the answer to the justification of
Gods ways to man. There are three parts, or triangle, of theodicy, they are that God is all powerful,
all good, yet there are still bad things that happen. Milton wrote to explain and justify why there are
still bad things even though God is all good, and all powerful. Milton's answer to this is that there is
all good and all power, but the bad is not God's fault. Milton has three key ideas to support his
reasoning that he talks about in Paradise Lost; what happens before man, what happens in the
Garden of Eden, and what happens at the end.
The triangle of theodicy begins in Milton's Paradise Lost before mankind is made. The novel goes
through a series of falls among the characters that help Milton explain his idea of theodicy through
an epic poem. "Paradise Lost, which chronicles Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve and their
expulsion from Eden, is widely regarded as his masterpiece and one of the greatest epic poems in
world literature." (Horace) The opening lines of the poem tell you of the fall of man. "Of Man's First
disobedience, and the fruit of that Forbidden Tree whose mortal taste Brought Death into the world,"
(Book 1 lines 1–3) However, there had to be a fall before the humans, which was Satan, or else
Adam and Eve would have never fallen. The first fall happens before man and consisted of Satan
and his followers. "Milton's epic poem opens on the fiery lake

The Prevention of Disaster Theme in Mary Shelley's...
Shelley's Frankenstein can be considered as one of the first representations of a possible apocalypse
that is now ubiquitous, humans will someday create something that will destroy mankind. In
different works, this Armageddon takes various forms: in the iconic movie The Matrix man–made
machines enslave the human race, while in another popular movie I Am Legend, a genetically
engineered virus mutates and kills the vast majority of the world's population. Frankenstein,
however, is not intended to give the reader an impending sense of doom, instead it warns about the
consequences of creating something, no matter the intent behind its creation, without exercising
proper caution. In both the previously mentioned films and also in ... Show more content on

Although Walton's mistake does not cause him physical harm, the failure of his enterprise is a shame
worse than death: in his own words, "I had rather die than return shamefully–my purpose
unfulfilled" (218). Through both the monster and Walton, Shelley also points out that while lack of
caution may not have mortal consequences, the results will nevertheless be severe. Shelley reiterates
this message throughout Frankenstein, One should always be cautious, and never be so rushed to
finish a project that the normal rules of safety are cast aside. The author conveys her belief by
revealing the reasoning of Frankenstein during the creation of the two monsters. During the making
of the first monster, Frankenstein is almost driven insane with his desire to succeed. He tells Walton,
"My eyeballs were starting from their sockets in attending to the details of my employment...my
eyes were insensible to the charms of nature... I also forgot my friends who were so many miles
absent and whom I had not seen in quite a long time" (55). Frankenstein's words reveal the
deleterious results of being incautious, he did not notice the seasons change, nor did he think of his
friends, his body also suffers the consequences of his wild frenzy to finish his work. However, when
the monster approaches Frankenstein to create a female daemon, Frankenstein is slightly wiser after
suffering the loss of several of his loved ones.

Comparison of Genesis 1 & 2

Comparison between Genesis 1 & Genesis 2 The story of creation begins with Genesis 1 and 2, it
explains how the world and it's living inhabitants were created from God's touch. From Genesis 1
we see how the sky, seas, land, animals, and mankind were created. However Genesis 2 focuses
more on the first of mankind, known as Adam and Eve and how they are made to be. In this paper I
will compare Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 and what the main idea for creation is in each one, however
in my opinion there is no contradiction between the two. Genesis 2 merely fills in the details that are
"headlined" in Genesis 1. In Genesis 1 we learn how God created the ... Show more content on

Another possibility is that there were two stories being told and the writer could not decide which
one to put in the bible, so he put both. Though there are two clashing stories, the basic idea for this
story of creation can still be seen. This might explain why Genesis 1 has a broader spectrum of
creation and why Genesis 2 focuses mainly on the creation of man. In Genesis 1 the names of man
are not even mentioned. In Genesis 2 however we come to learn that their names are Adam (male)
and Eve (female). Also in Genesis 2 we learn exactly how Eve is created; Goad takes a rib from
Adam and makes Eve from that rib. Then she is called woman, because she is made from man (Gen
2:23). This appears nowhere in Genesis 1.
Another possibility is that Genesis was also put in the Bible to show us how important the creation
of man was. After all we are the only things that God created in his image (Gen 1:26). God makes a
garden in Eden and puts Adam in the eastern part of Eden to care over and keep it in order. He then
instructs him about what trees to eat from and which to not eat from. Before God makes him a
helper (on the 6th day) he brings all the creatures to Adam to name all the animals and birds (Gen
2:15). Then God reflects back at what he previously made before man. (Gen 1:24–25 explains the
creatures made from the earth "according to its kind") and has Adam name them before he puts him
asleep to operate on him to give him his wife

Gangsta's Paradise Gcse Analysis
The song itself is accessible in terms of the sound – it is definitely not tough and dirty rap for only
Hip Hop biggest and the most dedicated fans but pop music enthusiasts would also like the track.
The melody is very catchy and easy to remember. However, the situation is absolutely different in
terms of lyrics. Gangsta's Paradise is the example of dark rap about the unreal lifestyle of the young
criminals from poor districts of the United States1. The video starts with the picture of school
corridor but this one is extremely unfriendly. There are few pupils who are definitely not looking

Coolio, while explaining the helpless situation of those young people, is walking around with the
one single candle. Symbol of hope? Does not seem so because in the video only the very last scene
presents one fragment from the movie which is optimistic: Michelle Pfeiffer and her students
laughing, dancing clearly to Hip Hop, having fun. The rest of the video is very dark. Scenes selected
from the movie are focused on the aggressive behavior of school kids and vulnerable teachers who
gave up on them. Abandoned buildings with graffiti on the walls, very simple classrooms, fights and
the police who is not asking questions – this is the world of black young people3. Gangsta's Paradise

the poorest districts of the United States were facing every day. It is about being helpless and about

Satan as a Hero Essay
John Milton's Paradise Lost is an epic poem that describes the fall of Satan and the expulsion of
Adam and Eve from Paradise. Satan is the protagonist of Paradise Lost and has several
characteristics in which readers may identify with him. Throughout the poem, Satan is not only a
tragic hero but also the key character that drives the plot and portrays many flawed human qualities.
As an angel fallen from the high esteem of God and a possessor of hubris that leads to his downfall,
he represents a tragic hero but also a character in which readers may identify with. Following the
standards of classic tragic heroes, Satan is a determined leader with an extreme amount of hubris.
He knows that God is the most powerful being and yet he still ... Show more content on

Satan is so high in his own esteem; he cannot bear to be a servant and must be a leader, as he says in
Book I, "Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n" (line 263). Satan is indeed "Hurled headlong
flaming from th'ethereal sky" (Book I, line 45) and into Hell where he will live in fire. But as a
leader, and a true protagonist, Satan chooses to accept his situation and rise as a hero for the pack of
fallen angels he has led from Heaven. Even if God is his enemy, at least he is not serving anyone.
He possesses his own heaven now, though not joyful and happy as the heaven he was just expelled
from, "Farewell happy fields/Where joy for ever dwells: hail horrors, hail/Infernal world, .../
Receive thy new possessor" (Book I, lines 249–253). Satan makes Hell his Heaven with his mind, as
he says, "The mind is its own place, and in itself/Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n"
(Book I, lines 254–255). Satan acknowledges that he has made a Hell of his previous Heaven, but he
also uses that reasoning to make Hell into his own Heaven. His anti–heroic qualities are apparent,
though, when he tells his followers in Book I, "To do aught good never will be our task/ But ever to
do ill our soul delight" (lines 159–160). It cannot be forgotten that Satan is evil by his creation and
through his free will. God created Satan with all of his imperfections but makes it clear that he had a

Paradise Lost By John Milton
Paradise Lost by John Milton
Paradise Lost by John Milton
John Milton divided the characters in his epic poem Paradise Lost into two sides, one side under
God representing good, and the other side under Satan representing evil and sin. Milton first
introduced the reader to the character Satan, the representative of all evil, and his allegiance of fallen
angels that aided in his revolt against God (Milton 35). Only later did Milton introduce the reader to
all powerful God, leader and creator of all mankind (John). This introduction of Satan first led the
reader to believe acts of sin were good, just like Eve felt in the Garden of Eden when she was
enticed by Satan to eat the fruit off of the Tree of Knowledge (Milton 255). The later introduction of
The Almighty had the readers change their feelings towards sin, as the ways of God were introduced
to them and these ways were shown to be the way to feel and believe. This levy of good vs. evil
carried on throughout the poem with the interaction of Satan and his fallen angels with God and his
son in Heaven.
The common representation of sin and evil came from the lead character in the battle against God,
Satan. His name means "enemy of God." He was a former high angel from Heaven named Lucifer,
meaning, "light bearer" (John). Satan became jealous in Heaven of God 's son and formed an
allegiance of angels to battle against God, only for God to cast them out of Heaven into Hell (Milton
35). This did not bother Satan at

Biblical Analysis Of Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein '

Biblical Analysis: Frankenstein
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley often refers to the bible on a number of occasions. However, it is
worth noting that many references used by Mary Shelley in Frankenstein can often be identified in
Genesis. Much like Genesis, the story of Frankenstein is a viable creation story. The book of
Genesis first explains the creation of man and woman, and also recounts the fall of humanity. Unlike
Genesis, Frankenstein begins with the fall of humanity, leading into the creation of man. Although it
would be simple to compare the novel to such non–religious terms, the religious symbolism cannot
be ignored in Frankenstein. Many biblical references within Frankenstein refer to the creation story
in the first book of Genesis.
"Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I
commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you" (Genesis 3: 17–19).
In the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve are punished for taking from the tree of knowledge. The
event that is presented in Genesis involving Adam and Eve strongly correlates to the first volume of
Frankenstein. Driven by his mother's death, Frankenstein looks to science in order to combat the
death and illness that surrounds him. His acquisition of this scientifical knowledge leads to the
creation of a horrible being. By creating life, he is able to attain the knowledge and

Reflection Paper On Preschool Education
Reflection Paper In my opinion preschool is a very important part in education and it should be
provided to all. Preschool has been provided for some kids in the past and for others they have not
had the chance to be able to be enrolled in these programs. From the research that there has been
about preschool programs, there tends to be a lot of positive results. The idea of early education on
children has always caught my attention because of all the benefits it comes with. That is why my
belief is that schools should provide preschool education programs to their communities. My
thoughts about preschool education programs is that I believe they are beneficial to the child
because of the positive affects it has on them. I know that by receiving preschool education before
they actually start their school career, help them adapt to the start of their education. I believe that
preschool also helps children in being able to get used to the idea of having to attend school and to
be able to start socializing with peers. Preschool also opens up the opportunity for children to
become more aware of their surroundings at an earlier age. I believe that becoming more aware of
their surroundings, they become more open to learning about new things. The concept about a
federally funded preschool for all program sounds nice, but at the same time I feel that there can be
a limitation. I agree with the fact that there should be a free for all program. I believe that every
child has a right to be able to gain the advantage of becoming fast learners. Also, I believe that each
child has a right to become a better person or to gain insight about their environment. The problem
that I could see going wrong with federally funded programs is that some requirements can be strict.
I can see the idea of it trying to restrict how many children can be involved in certain activities.
Also, I can see that the programs will be limited on funds to the point that some programs can have
more than others. This can be a problem because it is limiting the resources that a child could obtain.
In my perspective, a preschool education program consists of staff who have a lot of patience for
kids, attend to their needs, and truly care for them.

Analysis Of ' Frankenstein ' By Mary Shelley
In today's technological society, one is constantly being judged based on one's features, character,
actions, and words. We are constantly bombarded with visuals and soundbites whether on social
media or TV, causing many to pass judgement based on what we hear and see. When exposed, those
assessments can leave one feeling negative, depressed, and angry. This may lead to violent behavior
or the isolation of the person being criticized. Furthermore, one's drive for personal success can get
in the way of making good decisions. Hubris takes over and the need for both public and personal
gratification usurps one's morals, further isolating one from humanity. Although not in the
technological age, the characters in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, experience isolation due to bad
choices or the opinions of society. Yet, the true evil in Frankenstein is not the characters, but
isolation itself.
When one is disengaged from family and society, egotism, violence, and revenge occur. Victor
Frankenstein decides to abandon his family for six years in order to focus on his quest for glory.
Frankenstein became focused on creating a scientific miracle that he isolates himself from his family
and the rest of the world. This decision sets Frankenstein on a path of immorality and egotism.
When Frankenstein's best friend, Henry, arrives at the University of Ingolstadt where Victor studied,
Henry immediately acknowledges Frankenstein's lack of communication with his family, as he
encourages Victor

or not to eat an apple from the forbidden tree. Milton's makes Satan an interesting character, almost
a hero, although unwilling to repent, simply seeking his rightful place and when he cannot, and will
not, he goes after God's prized creations. Who can blame the poor little demon?
Aren't we accustomed to routing for the underdog? Milton gives Satan the gift of gab, intelligence
and our viewpoint, which makes us see his point of view.
"Of all the poets who have introduced into their works the agency of supernatural beings," says
McColley, "Milton has succeeded best"
(McColley 71; emphasis added).
Evidence for this can be seen as the action of the entire epic unfolds. In Book III, when Christ is

"Myself am Hell," he says later (IV, 75), but continues his initiative partially out of the potential for
mortification among his fellow devils, and partially because he anticipates that his own egotism
would resurface predictably:
"For never can true reconcilement grow
Where wounds of deadly hate have pierc 'd so deep" (IV, 98–9).
Satan has made the bed of his deviant divinity through his actions, and now he is obliged to lie in it.
For Milton, Satan was the archetypal tyrant. His reign in hell is the express antitype of the reign of
the Son of God by merit in Heaven. It is not the courage of Satan 's revolt against God that counts; it
is the ambition which betrays him into what Arnold Stein calls "the trap of leadership" (Hughes
179).
Another contrast we find is the manner in which Milton's interjects similarities to Greek Mythology,
such as representing Satan as a type of Prometheus. Prometheus bears undoubtedly a considerable
resemblance to the Satan of Milton. In both characters we find the same impatience of control, the
same ferocity, the same unconquerable pride. In both characters also are mingled, though in very
different proportions, some kind and generous feelings. Prometheus, however, is hardly superhuman
enough. Satan is a creature of another sphere. The might of his intellectual nature is victorious over

Good Intentions Destroyed in Frankenstein
In "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley, good intentions are destroyed by ambitious, selfish, and
disrespectful behavior. Frankenstein along with the creature, although seemingly different in
personalities, have many characteristics that interlock with each other creating a suspenseful plot
filled with good intentions that are never fully executed. Dominance is a reoccurring theme in
"Frankenstein" as both Victor Frankenstein, himself, and the creature strive to be perfect in every
task they preform. Although that strive for excellence may be a quality that many wish to attain, the
intentions of both Frankenstein and the creature are shattered due to their behaviors. As
Frankenstein embarks on adventures whose outcomes are not what he predicts, ... Show more

While in Paris, Victor receives a letter from Elizabeth saying, "[t]ell me, dearest Victor. Answer me,
I conjure you, by our mutual happiness, with simple truth–Do you not love another?" (Shelley 194).
Elizabeth is convinced that Frankenstein has found another love that satisfies him more when he is
on his journeys–although she writes in the most respectful way. Frankenstein is aware that Elizabeth
will believe anything that he says and he is able to use that to his advantage knowing that Elizabeth
will wait great lengths of time–as she already has–to marry him. In his response to Elizabeth's letter,
he justifies his love to her but also informs her he has "one secret, Elizabeth, a dreadful one; when
revealed to you, it will chill your frame with horror, and then, far from being surprised at my misery,
you will only wonder that I have surprised what I have endured" (Shelley 196). Frankenstein is
desperate to marry Elizabeth still knowing the consequences of his actions as the creature previously
tells him. Conscientious of his decisions, out of his selfish love for Elizabeth, Victor wants to marry
Elizabeth and tell her of the threat only after the ceremony is finished. Although Frankenstein does
have a good intention in marrying Elizabeth, it is destroyed by his selfish behavior.

Paradise Lost: Is Satan a Tragic Hero? Essay
In Milton's Paradise Lost, he writes the story of the fall of Satan, his followers, and mankind. Many
critics often view Satan as the unlikely or tragic hero of the epic poem. Satan is, obviously, the main
character throughout most of the poem, but not necessarily the hero. Satan's main purpose is to fight
G–d, and try to be on the same level as Him. The important thing is to realize that Satan is sin, and
being humans, who are all born into sin, we can easily relate to a sinful character. G–d is holy and
perfect. This is something which we, being fallible humans, cannot begin to comprehend. Satan
does, at the beginning, follow many of the attributes which coincide with Aristotle's definition of a
tragic hero; however, after the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Satan and his followers have been cast out of Heaven, Satan still maintains hope and
courage. He states,

Receive thy new possessor: one who brings
A mind not to be changed by place or time...Here at least
We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choice
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell..." (page 9, lines 251–253, 258–262)
Satan encourages his followers and reminds them of their original cause. He shows great leadership
skills by re–emphasizing their ideas that at least when they are reigning in Hell, G–d doesn't
interfere, and although it is Hell it is still worth ruling rather than serving in Heaven. Satan is
dwelling on his power which could be seen as his tragic flaw. He is allowing his pride and ego to
surface by glorifying Hell (calling it "profoundest") and declaring himself in possession of Hell. He
starts to think of the idea of Heaven and Hell as a mindset. He starts to believe that the mind is what
creates a place as Heaven and a place as Hell. Satan feels as though Heaven is Hell because he must
serve G–d there, but in Hell, he has a true Heaven because he is served and worshipped. This could
be determined as his tragic flaw.

My Philosophy Of Education Statement
Philosophy of Education Statement
I believe every child has the abilities to succeed in every area of learning when given a warm, calm
and stimulating atmosphere. A child's success is my main goal. Teaching young children is the most
rewarding job to me because I know with careful and purposeful teaching I can make a difference in
each child's life. I have created learning environments that are exciting and meaningful for young
children. Creativity is one of my main focuses in all areas of learning. I want to see children draw
pictures on plain paper and not color in coloring books, build houses and castles with blocks and not
have a picture design to work from and begin to learn about who they are through imaginative play.
I can learn about each child while observing or playing with them during their creative moments and
I feel these opportunities are priceless.
I believe that teachers and parents are essential advocates for all children. We are the people who
understand our children and their needs first. I have been involved with Parent's as Teachers' for
over a decade and I have seen the positive impact organizations like this make on families. When
my twins were born, I was a stay at home mom with three children under two. My son, born as a

Analysis Of ' Eve 's Apology On The Fall Of Humanity ' Essay
Although Aemilia Lanyer and John Milton were both writing on the Fall of humanity, their
approaches to this topic were vastly different. Lanyer wrote "Eve's Apology in Defense of Women,"
in order to combat the widely–believed cultural idea of the time that placed the fault of the Fall
entirely on Eve. Milton, on the other hand, is attempting to explore this biblical story in Paradise
Lost to prove that Adam and Eve had free will, thus absolving God of responsibility for the fall.
Lanyer and Milton differ in their portrayal of the fall through their depiction of Adam and Eve's
relationship and their ideas about the free will of each of the characters. These factors ultimately
lead Milton to present a portrait of the fall that seems more balanced and accurate. One of the
reasons for which Milton and Lanyer portray the Fall differently in their texts is because of their
views on the relationship between Adam and Eve. Firstly, although Lanyer does acknowledge that
Adam and Eve share a strong bond, she often represents the relationship of Adam and Eve as a
dictatorship, portraying Adam as the dictator. Because of this unbalanced power structure, which, in
Lanyer's eyes, overtly favors Adam over Eve, Lanyer absolves Eve of responsibility for the Fall and
places the blame squarely on Adam even though Eve offered the fruit to Adam. In portraying this
perceived power structure, Lanyer states, "Let not us women glory in men's fall / Who had power
given to overrule us all" (Lanyer,

Paradise Lost By John Milton Essay
Eve in Paradise Lost
In the visions of Western world and civilization, the descend of mankind from the Garden of Eden
serves as the prominent, underlying story of the formulation of existence. In 1667, in the
seventeenth century, author John Milton recasts the creation story in an epic form of poetry
consisting of ten books with over ten thousand lines of verse, in order to conspicuously portray the
characters and their actions that lead to the Fall of Mankind. In both Paradise Lost and the Bible, the
blame for the banishment of mankind from the Garden of Eden is placed on Eve for falling into the
seducing of Satan. Throughout his epic work, Milton conveys Eve 's advancement from an
autonomous woman to a more reliant woman to portray that women are not essentially conceived as
acquiescent beings. Eve is compelled into assent due to the patriarchal environment she is
surrounded by, therefore attributing it and allowing her to "develop into a women." Paradise Lost
conceives Eve as more than solely the mother of humankind and the wife of Adam. Milton 's
emendation of Eve in a biblical sense alters the character from fixed as portrayed in the Bible to a
more dynamic person in Paradise Lost. In doing so, Milton portrays to the reader a different and
originally a more favorable perspective of Eve and her character. Conveyed through the Book of
Genesis, in the Old Testament of the Bible, Eve is purely Adam 's wife who eats from the tree that
God appointed as forbidden. "She

Analysis Of John Milton 's ' Paradise Lost '
During the mid to late 1600s, England was going through a period of change and controversy. This
period of change was brought on as a result of the English Civil War and the government put in
place afterwards, the Protectorate. Under the Protectorate, Oliver Cromwell, a military commander
against the king during the civil war, was able to disguise his military dictatorship as a
commonwealth. It was this government that won the support of the writer John Milton. Milton was
known for his rhetorical writings against Charles I and for Oliver Cromwell at the time. It would not
be until after the fall of Cromwell that Milton would complete his greatest work of literature
however. When the Protectorate fell and Charles II rose to power in 1660, Milton was forced into
hiding for fear that he would be punished for his involvement with Cromwell. This would actually
benefit Milton for it was when he was in hiding that he was able to complete his great work,
Paradise Lost, even though he was blind. In Paradise Lost Milton recants the tale of Satan's struggle,
after being exiled from heaven for leading a revolt against God, and the lives of Adam and Eve.
Throughout the epic, Satan journeys to both Earth and Eden in attempts to ruin all that God has
worked to build. What Satan is unaware of however is that God knows all that he is doing and
allows him to continue on his quest. This raises the timeless inquiry as to whether or not we possess
free will and if so to what extent are the

Analysis Of John Milton 's ' The Fall Of Mankind ' Essay
The story of the fall of mankind, explored by John Milton in his epic Paradise Lost, has a way of
defining the roles of solitude through its characters, and through those definitions the effects solitude
has overall. The epic explores how the good and bad of what happens when one is left alone in their
thought, and deep into it, a question is asked by a main character, "who can enjoy alone, or all
enjoying, what contentment find?" (Book 8. Line 365–66). The way alone is defined is "having no
one else present, on one's own"; "taking or acting on its own"; and "no one or nothing else besides,
exclusive of all other people or things". All three definitions will be explored, because in ways each
definition applies to more than one character, and some characters are defined by more than one
definition of alone. The way solitude is presented in Paradise Lost is that the time spent in solitude
distances the characters from each other, and allows for both good and evil to come from their time
spent alone. The main characters define solitude in their own way, some even use more definitions
than others, and they share definitions among each other. Starting with God who is never alone,
although God experiences solitude in the sense that God is one of a kind, which was an early
sentiment shared with Adam before Eve was created. Satan in solitude allows for him to concoct
schemes to ruin God's plans. Adam begins alone, and he does not like it, going as far as to fall along

Relationship Between God And Adam
The bible remains a mystery to many people in society today. Therefore, the relationship between
God and Adam can be said to be a very complex relationship. Genesis shows us many examples of
God 's interaction with Adam, apparently there is so much more about God's disappointment and
righteous anger in the garden. The world of Christianity fails to see there's so much more to the
story about God and Adam, I think many of us do the same. He was the first man, the father of
mankind, however, Genesis does not fill–in the missing background information as to the reasons
why man and woman came to be the first rational, mortal creations of God 's divinity. Moreover,
most believers in the Bible do not know the specific similarities and differences regarding the two
humans ' characteristics, and how their relationship impact each other as well as all other living
creatures in the garden. We see the wrath, but we miss the grace. The bible does not tell if Adam was
Baptized and upon his death he went to heaven, however many of religious leaders tried to read and
to the relationship between god and Adam, without facts to back it up. Non statement should not be
used to formulate doctrine. A conclusion cannot be drawn from something that God did not say. If
Adam had been faithful, God may have had any number of plans for Adam, none of which are
touched upon in Genesis. If all other aspects of earthly creation tend to decay and death it makes as
much sense to conclude that human 's

and how many American children received treatment for the disorder in 2011. There was also a
percentage representing the children that may have been diagnosed with the disorder but are not
receiving any type of treatment for it. There are also facts supporting that parents that may have
been diagnosed with the disorder are more likely to reproduce children that suffer from the same
disorder opposed to parents who have not been diagnosed or exhibited any behaviors or symptoms
of ADHD. It is also quoted that children that have been diagnosed with the disorder may form a
issue with maintaining any relationships or friendships amongst their peers. There was also a
percentage that supported the fact that the children that suffer from the disorder of ADHD have a

Dante is elated to see Virgil as his first words to Virgil were, "O light and honor of all other poets,
may my long study and the intense love that made me search your volume serve me now. You are
my master and my author, you–the only one from whom my writing drew the noble style for which I
have been honored...". (Canto I of the Inferno in The Divine Comedy).
After emerging from the dark woods after Dante's vision, Dante and Virgil find themselves at the
gates of Hell, which were inscribed with "Abandon every hope, Ye that Enter." ( This should be
found in the second or third Canto of The Divine Comedy, at the place that Dante and Virgil are

the area known as Limbo. He is placed in this area because he died before Christianity.
Nevertheless, Virgil is not subjected to Hell. Each terrace provides living space for individuals who
were in Hell for the different categories of sin for which they were suffering. The lower the terrace,
the more severe the punishment. Satan resides in the very bottom level of Hell. Dante gives a very
vivid description of his first sight of Satan when he writes, "The emperor of the despondent

William Blake completed the manuscript of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, as well as the
twenty–five accompanying engraved plates, in 1792. In the sense that the The Marriage of Heaven
and Hell is a vision of a particular version of reality, it subscribes to one definition of the mythic, but
also fulfills another as Birenbaum writes in Tragedy and Innocence: "...on a more specialized

Blake uses traditional symbols of angels and devils, animal imagery, and especially images of fire
and flame to: 1) set up a dual world, a confrontation of opposites or "contraries" which illustrate
how the rules of Reason and Religion repress and pervert the basic creative energy of humanity, 2)
argues for apocalyptic transformation of the self "through the radical regeneration of each person's
own power to imagine" (Johnson/Grant, xxiv), and 3) reconstructs Man in a new image, a fully
realized Man who is both rational and imaginative, partaking of his divinity through creativity. The
form of the poem consists of "The Argument," expositions on his concepts of the "contraries" and of
"expanded perception" which are both interspersed with "Memorable Fancies" that explicate and
enlarge on his expositions, and concludes with "A Song of Liberty," a prophecy of a future heaven
on earth.
"Without Contraries is no progression. Attraction and
Repulsion, reason and Energy, Love and Hate, are

Good & Evil. Good is the passive that obeys Reason.
Evil is the active springing from Energy.

Paradise Lost By John Milton
In John Milton's poem, Paradise Lost, written out were twelve books that mainly focused on Adam
and Eve. The plot essentially focuses on the defiance that Adam and Eve have created due to Satan's
persuasive manner to destroy humankind. In book four, Milton introduces the creation of man. The
Bible states, "the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground" (The Holy Bible (ESV),
Genesis. 2.7). The name of God's creation is Adam. After contemplation, God realizes man shall not
be alone. This is how the creation of Eve came about. It is stated, "The LORD God caused a deep
sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh"
(Genesis. 2.21). God is good; however, he allows one to live through experience. The focus of this
essay is in regards to Eve's realization of her identity. Her desires, her sighting of a creature and the
reflection of water convey a larger message about the meaning of life.
"For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces
the LORD" (Psalm. 10.3). Desire is an interpretation of a strong need or want. Most view this term
sexually, while others view it as a wish. In Paradise Lost, Milton writes, "Mine eyes till now and
pined with vain desire" (Milton, 466). To be vain is saying one is of personal vanity. This is not a
qualitative trait to possess for it means empty, useless or nothing. Not only is it a negative trait to

Adam & Eve Lost in Paradise
Paradise Lost by John Milton: Discuss the relationship between Adam and Eve, as portrayed in
Book 9 of Paradise Lost. How does Milton's portrayal compare to or differ from how Adam and Eve
are typically portrayed, described, or understood?
Thoughts of Eve conjure images of a meek woman who is submissive and created to serve her
husband. Adam is thought of as a strong, beautiful man created in the likeness of God. He is the
ruler of land and sea and leader of all mankind. Their relationship is thought of as idyllic and
unified, even throughout and after their fall. However, Milton casts a different light on their
relationship and personal traits in Book 9 of Paradise Lost.

Therefore, his love for her leads him to eat the fruit because if she is to die then he chooses to die
with her because as he says in line 959 "to lose thee were to lose myself" (2111).
Now that they both have sinned, the relationship becomes one of contention, contrary to the
traditional image. Sexually it is lustful and depraved lacking the love and intimacy they once shared.
Adam is no longer mild towards Eve, but accusatory and blaming even speaking harshly too her
which is opposite of how he treated her before the apple. She in turn retaliates against him and tries
to blame him for not being stronger. She even accuses of him of not being able to withstand the
temptation if it had been him. Sadly, what becomes of their relationship is a blame game that is
"fruitless" and controlled by pride with neither taking responsibility for their actions (2116).
In the end of this book, Milton inserts an interesting point about the male/female relationship that
easily could be overlooked. He switches from Adam making a point about Eve, to generalizing all
women of which Eve is the representative. Adam talks of Eve's confidence and perfection and how
much he admired her, but realizes that is where he went wrong calling it his "crime" (2116). Then he
makes the shift towards women, which is craftily done by Milton, almost like a forewarning to men
to beware of the power of women in the following:
Thus it shall befall
Him who to

The Role of Satan in Paradise Lost
The Role of Satan in "Paradise Lost"
John Milton's epic "Paradise Lost" is one that has brought about much debate since its writing. This
epic tells the Biblical story of Adam and Eve, although from a different perspective than what most
people usually see. Milton tells the story more through the eyes of Satan, whom most people usually
consider the ultimate villain. The way in which Satan is portrayed in this story has caused
speculation as to whether Satan is actually a hero in this situation. He certainly has heroic qualities
throughout the story, yet still is ultimately responsible for Adam and Eve's sin. Satan can easily be
classified as a hero in this story, as well as the main antagonist, depending on the viewpoint of the ...

The character of Satan in this story can also be related to other tragic heroes throughout history.
He is a variant of Achilles, who equates honor with his own status...and feels slighted by his
commander–in–chief, refuses his orders and believes himself superior. Both epics turn on the
connection between 'a sense of injur'd merit' and the hero's wrath. He is Odysseus and Jason on their
heroic voyages, leader and chief warrior in battle during and after the War in Heaven, and through it
all the most powerful speaker, able to rally and organize his troops with the eloquence of his appeals
to their own heroic values. (Forsyth 30).
While many arguments can be made to defend Satan as the hero of this story, his power clearly
declines throughout the poem. In the end, he does not achieve his goal. Satan is "bitter, but also
acknowledges the reality of his circumstances" (Smith). We see Satan reach his peak, then his power
gently declines by the end of the story. Although Satan is powerful and persevering, he is no match
for God. We begin to see more of his flaws. Satan is undoubtedly charismatic and persuasive in his
speeches, as well as a powerful military leader, yet he seems to be somewhat hypocritical as well.
For example, when we are first introduced to Satan, he tells his followers not to be afraid, yet he is
afraid himself. Some might view this as Satan being brave, but this could also be viewed as him
being deceptive, which illustrates how he

Analysis Of Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein '
Karina Mousessian Ms. Stevenson English II Frankenstein Essay In Frankenstein, written by Mary
Shelley, the creation, made from scraps of corpses, was built by Victor Frankenstein, a man
fascinated and obsessed with the knowledge of life. Following the creation's rouse, Victor
immediately abandons him with no desire on keeping or teaching his new being. Because of his lack
of nourishment and direction "growing up", the creation goes through a process of self–deception.
He endures a period of deceit by believing that he is a normal human being like everyone around
him. But as time progresses, he learns to accept how he is alone in this world and disconnected with
everyone. Because of the creation's lack of guidance and isolation, he grows up feeling unwanted.
Living on his own with no direction on where to go, the creation acquires self–deception by viewing
himself as a normal human being like the rest of society around him. As the creation is imagining
what it would be like to be a part of the cottagers lives, he proclaimed, "I persuaded myself that
when they should become acquainted with my admiration of their virtues, they would
compassionate me and overlook my personal deformity," (Shelley 133). When the creation mentions
that, "they would compassionate me and overlook my personal deformity", he is mindful of his

Analysis Of William Blake 's ' Frankenstein ' Essay
Sadaf Tabibzadeh English 6 Professor Dossett 10.02.2015 Contraries in Frankenstein Most people
would think that contraries only exist to dominate each other, making the other side appear less
significant. However, the opposite of this is true. The beauty of a rose stands out more because of
the thorns that it contains. Without the thorns, it would just be an average flower. A day wouldn't be
as bright if it wasn't compared to the darkness of night. And "joy wouldn't be so joyful, if it wasn't
for pain" (50 cent). Contrasts highlight movements in an element, by pointing out the differences
that are shown by the opposite side. They in fact, bring out the good and bad features in anything.
William Blake is known for his famous quote, "Without contraries there is no progression." He
continues to show contraries in many of his works, including "Marriage of Heaven and Hell", and
his poem written in 1794, "The Sick Rose," Blake introduces the idea of contraries that are layered
in the simplicity of these lines. At first, to the reader, it may only seem that he is writing about a
simple dying rose, however there is more to it. He is also mentioning how this is benefiting the
worm that decides to reside in it. The best interpretation that comes to mind, is the loss of virginity.
The rose symbolizes a virgin, pure and untampered (a vagina). The "invisible worm" symbolizes the
possibility of penetration (penis). This can be a feminist take on the idea of beauty and destruction.

Summary Of Four Children For Sale By Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes describes the punctum of a photograph as "that accident which pricks me (but also
bruises me, is poignant to me)" (Barthes 27). The punctum of a photo is not meant to be the focus of
the image. It is the detail that sparks interest. In the photograph 4 Children For Sale, credited to
Bettmann Corbis, the punctum for me is the sign or maybe the facial expressions of the children or
the mother herself. I say for me because the punctum of a photo is not the same for every person.
Every person sees an image differently. Different things will be more prominent to different people
because the punctum is unique to the specific spectator.
However, I do not know exactly which detail acts as the punctum. According to Barthes, "What I
can name cannot really prick me" (51). The punctum does not necessarily have to be one detail
though. If the punctum is what stings at you, what ultimately bothers you, the punctum can be made
up of multiple pricks. Multiple subtle details that stop you and make you think of the photo in a new
light. Overall, the punctum is what makes you question and what engages you to the photo.
The sign is at least one of the sources of the punctum which can be described as "what I add to the
photograph and what is nonetheless already there" (55). The focus of the photograph should be the
children considering they are the ones being advertised and yet my attention is constantly drawn to
the actual sign and not simply its message. The sign is an anomaly

Comparing The Pilgrim 's Progress And Paradise Lost
Comparing The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost, Two Works Focused on Salvation Two
influential pieces of English literature, both focusing on the topic of salvation, are The Pilgrim's
Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1678 (2269), and Paradise Lost, composed in the previous
decade by poet John Milton in 1667 (1945). While these two works both pay special attention to
mankind's preoccupation with being saved, they differ vastly from one another in the language and
literary style used in each respective piece, the way in which salvation itself is portrayed, and also in
how the salvation of each story's characters is determined through their resistance to temptation and
the state of their relationship with God. Before even mentioning the content of the works
themselves, it becomes immediately evident that the writing styles of The Pilgrim's Progress and
Paradise Lost are near polar opposites of one another. For example, in The Pilgrim's Progress, author
John Bunyan writes in a simple prose style, which is relatively easy for most to comprehend. In
contrast, John Milton, in Paradise Lost, employs a complicated, original poetic style that is the first
of its kind. In using some Latin words and phrases while employing a rhyme scheme commonplace
in Latin poetry, Milton is able to construct an eloquent, highly polished language in this piece.
However, in still using English as the poem's primary language, Milton is still able to effectively

John Milton's Epic Poem about Satan, Paradise Lost
John milton is one of the most influential men in english writing today because of his outstanding
work. He was an outstanding poet, who wrote poems that were outside the box. A great example
would be one of his most famous pieces Paridise lost, written in blank verse. In paridise lost Milton
concerns the biblical story of the fall of man by using Adam and Eve as the prime example. As
Paridise lost goes on you can definetly start to notice that he puts one specific character ahead of all
others and thats Satan. I believe miltons hero is Satan because of the way he talks about Satan in the
epic poem. When the epic poem is read it sounds as if Milton ecourges the behavior of Satan.
I Believe Milton considers Satan to be the hero, or protagonist, of the story, because he struggles to
overcome his own doubts and weaknesses and accomplishes his goal of corrupting humankind.
Satan is a very complex character in the epic poem. I belive Milton considers Satan as his hero
because he want Satan to seem heroic and appealing early in the poem to draw us into sympathizing
with him against our will, so that we may see how seductive evil is and learn to be more vigilant in
resisting its appeal. Milton devotes much of the poem's early books to developing Satan's character.
Satan's character changes significantly from Book I to his final appearance in Book X. In Book I he
is a strong, imposing figure with great abilities as a leader and public statesmen, whereas by the
poem's end he

John Milton 's Paradise Lost
In Early Modern England, the idea of men being superior to women was thought to be a God–given
law. Sexism, though not yet coined as an English word at the time, was very prevalent in this time
period and bled into the writing it produced. John Milton's Paradise Lost is no exception to this, as it
explores human sexuality and gender roles. It has been argued that when Adam and Eve are
described as "Two of far nobler shape erect and tall,/ Godlike erect" (4.288–289) there is no
distinction between the two, and that they are being portrayed, even by Satan, as equal. This is the
reader's first introduction to Eve who, based on these two lines from Paradise Lost, is Adam's
equivalent in power and in majesty. However, this passage cannot be isolated and taken as the theme
of the entire epic work: Milton goes right on to convey "Milton's idea that true freedom involves
obedience to natural superiors" (Milton, p. 2009, footnote 9) by saying that there is "true authority in
men" (4.295). Throughout Paradise Lost, Milton shows stark contrast between Adam and Eve,
overall implying that Eve is a less perfect character. In his epic poem, Milton makes Eve out to be
the misogynistic image of a simple, subordinate woman by showing her as being distanced from
God, trained to be obedient to men, and conveying the negative outcomes that transpire when Eve is
persuaded into making her own decision.
By showing Eve's unwavering blind obedience, Milton characterizes her as a subservient woman

ante–purgatory, they enter purgatory, where an angel inscribed the letter P seven times on Dante's
forehead. Each letter represented one of the seven deadly sins. Those seven sins include pride, envy,
anger, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust. Each P will be erased as Dante travels through the areas that
were reserved for those who had committed each of the seven sins. As each P is erased by an angel
from Dante's forehead, the journey becomes easier and easier for Dante.
In Purgatory, even though people inhabit different levels, they are able to eventually move on to
heaven if they receive enough prayer to rid them of their sins. The seventh terrace is the highest
level of purgatory. When Virgil and Dante finally reach that terrace, they must pass through a

The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall Analysis
"The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," a short story by Katherine Anne Porter, describes the last
thoughts, feelings, and memories of an elderly woman. The importance of the title becomes obvious
as Granny Weatherall's life flashes before her eyes. She is an 80–year–old woman who is bedridden,
stubborn, sick, and in denial. She has four children one of whom had passed away: Lydia, Cornelia,
Jimmy, and Haps. Critics agree that there is no sign from God that her soul will be accepted into
heaven. Granny Weatherall expects a sign from God, but overlooks it when it is given. Granny
undeniably gets a sign from God; however, she overlooks this sign because it is Hapsy her last–born
daughter that had passed away.
Granny has flash backs of her life that goes as far back as 60 years. Hapsy was the one that Granny
wanted. "Did you send for Hapsy to?" (68) As Granny Weatherall moves closer to death her
thoughts become more scattered. Making connections with her thoughts is possible to conclude that
Hapsy is her favorite daughter that she longs to see once again. Hapsy had been her last–born child,
that had passed away. "Hapsy melted from within and turned flimsy as gray gauze and the baby was
a gauzy shadow, and Hapsy came up close and said, "I thought you'd never come," and looked at her
very searchingly and said, "You haven't changed a bit!" (68) Granny imagines telling Hapsy many
things in Heaven, that she was not able to do so here on earth. Granny was searching for Hapsy.
"She had to go long way back through many great rooms to find Hapsy standing with a baby on her
arm." (68) Hapsy was Granny's sign from Christ, but because Granny overlooked this it is a sign of
the rejection of the jilting Granny Weather Courageously faced.
Granny has been through several triumphs in her life. She was about to marry George and he left her
at the altar. After that happened she married and her husband John which passed away. She learned
to be an independent woman that did not rely on anyone. "She had fenced in a hundred acres once,
digging the post holes herself and clamping the wires with just a negro boy to help." (67) She did
both chores that the woman and the man would do. At the end, Granny blew out the light in fear of

Creation And The Fall Essay

  • 1. Creation and the Fall Essay Creation and the Fall "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"1 (Genesis 1:1). As we look back in history we can see many beginnings, but the beginning referred to in this verse is a beginning that defies understanding to the extreme. We see one of the most amazing creations in this world in a newly born child, yet that creation pails in comparison to that of the creation on the world. Look around you and imagine nothing. That's the way in was before the Lord gave us the first of many gifts that have been bestowed upon the human race. When you really break it down you can see that all things are truly created by God. Some may disagree and say that man has created everything from nails to computers, but the Lord ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The effect of this is a less degradation of the ozone layer! And, as we all know today, a thicker ozone layer means less short–wave radiation on earth. Less short–wave radiation and less ozone particles in the lower part of the atmosphere meant longevity for mankind."4 Below is an example of what the atmosphere might have looked like after the second day.5 "And God said, 'Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.' And it was so. God called the dry ground 'land,' and the gathered waters He called 'seas.' And God saw that it was good" Genesis 1:9– 10.6 Now reading this verse might not conjure up amazing images in your head, but take a look around you and you will see an amazing world that defies the imagination of mortal man. If God had just created man and placed him on an empty planet with nothing to see, no mountains, no bodies of water, no canyons, etc, and asked man to create a world, would we have anything close to what we see around us today? I dare to say that we would probably still be living on an empty world all these years later. Only the one true God could create all that we see and hear. Genesis 1:11–13 deals with the creation of plants and trees. To some this may not seem to be all that amazing, but if you really think about it God was preparing this earth for human inhabitation with all of these creations. Plants and trees are a staple of life and without them the human race would surly parish. We receive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Understanding Vs. Knowing in Atwood’s Oryx and Crake Essay It is often simpler to settle for an understanding of the world and people around us instead of trying to know the truth. Truth has consequences; by knowing too much, one can lose a friend, learn a deadly secret, or become someone they do not want to be. To express his understanding of himself and the world around him, Crake in Oryx and Crake uses quote–bearing fridge magnets. One very important quote is "We understand more than we know". It is important to recognize the difference between the terms "understand" and "know"; the Oxford English Dictionary defines "to understand" as to perceive the significance, explanation, or cause of, whereas "to know" is to be absolutely certain or sure about something. There is certainly a difference, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, there are many characteristics that remain uncontrolled in the Crakers, and these people eventually begin to create art and place both Oryx and Crake in God–like positions in their society: two things against which Crake had warned. Crake's understanding of biology and psychology leads the Crakers to initially have none of humanity's flaws. This shows Crake's grand understanding of biology, but not any knowledge of how these people will soon acquire notions of art, gods, or symbolism. He has done few trials, and consequently has little evidence to prove that the Children of Crake will be successful. Furthermore, Crake is able to understand Jimmy's incredible attraction to Oryx from the first time they glimpse her on the HottTotts website. He saves her image, possibly with the intentions of one day finding this girl to use against Jimmy. What Crake understands is Jimmy's love for Oryx, but what he doesn't know is that Jimmy will choose in the end to not let him and Oryx re–enter the Paradice Dome. Jimmy accepts that for complete renewal of the human race, not only Crake, but Oryx as well, must die, "for both have sinned against the potential goodness of humanity" and "she is a hinge in Crake's attempt to re–enter Paradice" (DiMarco 191). Whereas Jimmy had been known to Crake to be one to be fearful and easily controlled, this time he takes a powerful stance against Crake's plan and proves that Crake ... • 5. A Discussion of Milton’s Theodicy in Paradise Lost What is free will? Milton explains in Paradise Lost that free will is the answer to the justification of Gods ways to man. There are three parts, or triangle, of theodicy, they are that God is all powerful, all good, yet there are still bad things that happen. Milton wrote to explain and justify why there are still bad things even though God is all good, and all powerful. Milton's answer to this is that there is all good and all power, but the bad is not God's fault. Milton has three key ideas to support his reasoning that he talks about in Paradise Lost; what happens before man, what happens in the Garden of Eden, and what happens at the end. The triangle of theodicy begins in Milton's Paradise Lost before mankind is made. The novel goes through a series of falls among the characters that help Milton explain his idea of theodicy through an epic poem. "Paradise Lost, which chronicles Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from Eden, is widely regarded as his masterpiece and one of the greatest epic poems in world literature." (Horace) The opening lines of the poem tell you of the fall of man. "Of Man's First disobedience, and the fruit of that Forbidden Tree whose mortal taste Brought Death into the world," (Book 1 lines 1–3) However, there had to be a fall before the humans, which was Satan, or else Adam and Eve would have never fallen. The first fall happens before man and consisted of Satan and his followers. "Milton's epic poem opens on the fiery lake ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Prevention of Disaster Theme in Mary Shelley's... Shelley's Frankenstein can be considered as one of the first representations of a possible apocalypse that is now ubiquitous, humans will someday create something that will destroy mankind. In different works, this Armageddon takes various forms: in the iconic movie The Matrix man–made machines enslave the human race, while in another popular movie I Am Legend, a genetically engineered virus mutates and kills the vast majority of the world's population. Frankenstein, however, is not intended to give the reader an impending sense of doom, instead it warns about the consequences of creating something, no matter the intent behind its creation, without exercising proper caution. In both the previously mentioned films and also in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Walton's mistake does not cause him physical harm, the failure of his enterprise is a shame worse than death: in his own words, "I had rather die than return shamefully–my purpose unfulfilled" (218). Through both the monster and Walton, Shelley also points out that while lack of caution may not have mortal consequences, the results will nevertheless be severe. Shelley reiterates this message throughout Frankenstein, One should always be cautious, and never be so rushed to finish a project that the normal rules of safety are cast aside. The author conveys her belief by revealing the reasoning of Frankenstein during the creation of the two monsters. During the making of the first monster, Frankenstein is almost driven insane with his desire to succeed. He tells Walton, "My eyeballs were starting from their sockets in attending to the details of my employment...my eyes were insensible to the charms of nature... I also forgot my friends who were so many miles absent and whom I had not seen in quite a long time" (55). Frankenstein's words reveal the deleterious results of being incautious, he did not notice the seasons change, nor did he think of his friends, his body also suffers the consequences of his wild frenzy to finish his work. However, when the monster approaches Frankenstein to create a female daemon, Frankenstein is slightly wiser after suffering the loss of several of his loved ones. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Comparison of Genesis 1 & 2 Brady Pair Dr. Stewart REL 1330 Introduction to Christianity HONORS Section September 18, 2013 Comparison between Genesis 1 & Genesis 2 The story of creation begins with Genesis 1 and 2, it explains how the world and it's living inhabitants were created from God's touch. From Genesis 1 we see how the sky, seas, land, animals, and mankind were created. However Genesis 2 focuses more on the first of mankind, known as Adam and Eve and how they are made to be. In this paper I will compare Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 and what the main idea for creation is in each one, however in my opinion there is no contradiction between the two. Genesis 2 merely fills in the details that are "headlined" in Genesis 1. In Genesis 1 we learn how God created the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another possibility is that there were two stories being told and the writer could not decide which one to put in the bible, so he put both. Though there are two clashing stories, the basic idea for this story of creation can still be seen. This might explain why Genesis 1 has a broader spectrum of creation and why Genesis 2 focuses mainly on the creation of man. In Genesis 1 the names of man are not even mentioned. In Genesis 2 however we come to learn that their names are Adam (male) and Eve (female). Also in Genesis 2 we learn exactly how Eve is created; Goad takes a rib from Adam and makes Eve from that rib. Then she is called woman, because she is made from man (Gen 2:23). This appears nowhere in Genesis 1. Another possibility is that Genesis was also put in the Bible to show us how important the creation of man was. After all we are the only things that God created in his image (Gen 1:26). God makes a garden in Eden and puts Adam in the eastern part of Eden to care over and keep it in order. He then instructs him about what trees to eat from and which to not eat from. Before God makes him a helper (on the 6th day) he brings all the creatures to Adam to name all the animals and birds (Gen 2:15). Then God reflects back at what he previously made before man. (Gen 1:24–25 explains the creatures made from the earth "according to its kind") and has Adam name them before he puts him asleep to operate on him to give him his wife ... • 11. Gangsta's Paradise Gcse Analysis The song itself is accessible in terms of the sound – it is definitely not tough and dirty rap for only Hip Hop biggest and the most dedicated fans but pop music enthusiasts would also like the track. The melody is very catchy and easy to remember. However, the situation is absolutely different in terms of lyrics. Gangsta's Paradise is the example of dark rap about the unreal lifestyle of the young criminals from poor districts of the United States1. • 13. Satan as a Hero Essay John Milton's Paradise Lost is an epic poem that describes the fall of Satan and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. Satan is the protagonist of Paradise Lost and has several characteristics in which readers may identify with him. Throughout the poem, Satan is not only a tragic hero but also the key character that drives the plot and portrays many flawed human qualities. As an angel fallen from the high esteem of God and a possessor of hubris that leads to his downfall, he represents a tragic hero but also a character in which readers may identify with. Following the standards of classic tragic heroes, Satan is a determined leader with an extreme amount of hubris. He knows that God is the most powerful being and yet he still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Satan is so high in his own esteem; he cannot bear to be a servant and must be a leader, as he says in Book I, "Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n" (line 263). Satan is indeed "Hurled headlong flaming from th'ethereal sky" (Book I, line 45) and into Hell where he will live in fire. But as a leader, and a true protagonist, Satan chooses to accept his situation and rise as a hero for the pack of fallen angels he has led from Heaven. Even if God is his enemy, at least he is not serving anyone. He possesses his own heaven now, though not joyful and happy as the heaven he was just expelled from, "Farewell happy fields/Where joy for ever dwells: hail horrors, hail/Infernal world, .../ Receive thy new possessor" (Book I, lines 249–253). Satan makes Hell his Heaven with his mind, as he says, "The mind is its own place, and in itself/Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n" (Book I, lines 254–255). Satan acknowledges that he has made a Hell of his previous Heaven, but he also uses that reasoning to make Hell into his own Heaven. His anti–heroic qualities are apparent, though, when he tells his followers in Book I, "To do aught good never will be our task/ But ever to do ill our soul delight" (lines 159–160). It cannot be forgotten that Satan is evil by his creation and through his free will. God created Satan with all of his imperfections but makes it clear that he had a choice by ... • 15. Paradise Lost By John Milton Paradise Lost by John Milton Paradise Lost by John Milton John Milton divided the characters in his epic poem Paradise Lost into two sides, one side under God representing good, and the other side under Satan representing evil and sin. Milton first introduced the reader to the character Satan, the representative of all evil, and his allegiance of fallen angels that aided in his revolt against God (Milton 35). Only later did Milton introduce the reader to all powerful God, leader and creator of all mankind (John). This introduction of Satan first led the reader to believe acts of sin were good, just like Eve felt in the Garden of Eden when she was enticed by Satan to eat the fruit off of the Tree of Knowledge (Milton 255). The later introduction of The Almighty had the readers change their feelings towards sin, as the ways of God were introduced to them and these ways were shown to be the way to feel and believe. This levy of good vs. evil carried on throughout the poem with the interaction of Satan and his fallen angels with God and his son in Heaven. The common representation of sin and evil came from the lead character in the battle against God, Satan. His name means "enemy of God." He was a former high angel from Heaven named Lucifer, meaning, "light bearer" (John). Satan became jealous in Heaven of God 's son and formed an allegiance of angels to battle against God, only for God to cast them out of Heaven into Hell (Milton 35). This did not bother Satan at ... • 17. Biblical Analysis Of Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein ' Alexandria Harris Mrs. Mitchell AP Literature 16 November 2015 Biblical Analysis: Frankenstein Frankenstein by Mary Shelley often refers to the bible on a number of occasions. However, it is worth noting that many references used by Mary Shelley in Frankenstein can often be identified in Genesis. Much like Genesis, the story of Frankenstein is a viable creation story. The book of Genesis first explains the creation of man and woman, and also recounts the fall of humanity. Unlike Genesis, Frankenstein begins with the fall of humanity, leading into the creation of man. Although it would be simple to compare the novel to such non–religious terms, the religious symbolism cannot be ignored in Frankenstein. Many biblical references within Frankenstein refer to the creation story in the first book of Genesis. "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you" (Genesis 3: 17–19). In the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve are punished for taking from the tree of knowledge. The event that is presented in Genesis involving Adam and Eve strongly correlates to the first volume of Frankenstein. Driven by his mother's death, Frankenstein looks to science in order to combat the death and illness that surrounds him. His acquisition of this scientifical knowledge leads to the creation of a horrible being. By creating life, he is able to attain the knowledge and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Reflection Paper On Preschool Education Reflection Paper In my opinion preschool is a very important part in education and it should be provided to all. Preschool has been provided for some kids in the past and for others they have not had the chance to be able to be enrolled in these programs. From the research that there has been about preschool programs, there tends to be a lot of positive results. The idea of early education on children has always caught my attention because of all the benefits it comes with. That is why my belief is that schools should provide preschool education programs to their communities. My thoughts about preschool education programs is that I believe they are beneficial to the child because of the positive affects it has on them. I know that by receiving preschool education before they actually start their school career, help them adapt to the start of their education. I believe that preschool also helps children in being able to get used to the idea of having to attend school and to be able to start socializing with peers. Preschool also opens up the opportunity for children to become more aware of their surroundings at an earlier age. I believe that becoming more aware of their surroundings, they become more open to learning about new things. The concept about a federally funded preschool for all program sounds nice, but at the same time I feel that there can be a limitation. I agree with the fact that there should be a free for all program. I believe that every child has a right to be able to gain the advantage of becoming fast learners. Also, I believe that each child has a right to become a better person or to gain insight about their environment. The problem that I could see going wrong with federally funded programs is that some requirements can be strict. I can see the idea of it trying to restrict how many children can be involved in certain activities. Also, I can see that the programs will be limited on funds to the point that some programs can have more than others. This can be a problem because it is limiting the resources that a child could obtain. In my perspective, a preschool education program consists of staff who have a lot of patience for kids, attend to their needs, and truly care for them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Analysis Of ' Frankenstein ' By Mary Shelley In today's technological society, one is constantly being judged based on one's features, character, actions, and words. We are constantly bombarded with visuals and soundbites whether on social media or TV, causing many to pass judgement based on what we hear and see. When exposed, those assessments can leave one feeling negative, depressed, and angry. This may lead to violent behavior or the isolation of the person being criticized. Furthermore, one's drive for personal success can get in the way of making good decisions. Hubris takes over and the need for both public and personal gratification usurps one's morals, further isolating one from humanity. Although not in the technological age, the characters in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, experience isolation due to bad choices or the opinions of society. Yet, the true evil in Frankenstein is not the characters, but isolation itself. When one is disengaged from family and society, egotism, violence, and revenge occur. Victor Frankenstein decides to abandon his family for six years in order to focus on his quest for glory. Frankenstein became focused on creating a scientific miracle that he isolates himself from his family and the rest of the world. This decision sets Frankenstein on a path of immorality and egotism. When Frankenstein's best friend, Henry, arrives at the University of Ingolstadt where Victor studied, Henry immediately acknowledges Frankenstein's lack of communication with his family, as he encourages Victor ... Milton's makes Satan an interesting character, almost a hero, although unwilling to repent, simply seeking his rightful place and when he cannot, and will not, he goes after God's prized creations. Who can blame the poor little demon? Aren't we accustomed to routing for the underdog? Milton gives Satan the gift of gab, intelligence and our viewpoint, which makes us see his point of view. "Of all the poets who have introduced into their works the agency of supernatural beings," says McColley, "Milton has succeeded best" (McColley 71; emphasis added). Evidence for this can be seen as the action of the entire epic unfolds. In Book III, when Christ is introduced and is observing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Myself am Hell," he says later (IV, 75), but continues his initiative partially out of the potential for mortification among his fellow devils, and partially because he anticipates that his own egotism would resurface predictably: "For never can true reconcilement grow Where wounds of deadly hate have pierc 'd so deep" (IV, 98–9). Satan has made the bed of his deviant divinity through his actions, and now he is obliged to lie in it. For Milton, Satan was the archetypal tyrant. His reign in hell is the express antitype of the reign of the Son of God by merit in Heaven. It is not the courage of Satan 's revolt against God that counts; it is the ambition which betrays him into what Arnold Stein calls "the trap of leadership" (Hughes 179). Another contrast we find is the manner in which Milton's interjects similarities to Greek Mythology, such as representing Satan as a type of Prometheus. Prometheus bears undoubtedly a considerable resemblance to the Satan of Milton. In both characters we find the same impatience of control, the same ferocity, the same unconquerable pride. In both characters also are mingled, though in very different proportions, some kind and generous feelings. Prometheus, however, is hardly superhuman enough. Satan is a creature of another sphere. • 27. Paradise Lost: Is Satan a Tragic Hero? Essay In Milton's Paradise Lost, he writes the story of the fall of Satan, his followers, and mankind. Many critics often view Satan as the unlikely or tragic hero of the epic poem. Satan is, obviously, the main character throughout most of the poem, but not necessarily the hero. Satan's main purpose is to fight G–d, and try to be on the same level as Him. The important thing is to realize that Satan is sin, and being humans, who are all born into sin, we can easily relate to a sinful character. G–d is holy and perfect. This is something which we, being fallible humans, cannot begin to comprehend. Satan does, at the beginning, follow many of the attributes which coincide with Aristotle's definition of a tragic hero; however, after the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (page 9, lines 251–253, 258–262) Satan encourages his followers and reminds them of their original cause. He shows great leadership skills by re–emphasizing their ideas that at least when they are reigning in Hell, G–d doesn't interfere, and although it is Hell it is still worth ruling rather than serving in Heaven. Satan is dwelling on his power which could be seen as his tragic flaw. He is allowing his pride and ego to surface by glorifying Hell (calling it "profoundest") and declaring himself in possession of Hell. He starts to think of the idea of Heaven and Hell as a mindset. He starts to believe that the mind is what creates a place as Heaven and a place as Hell. Satan feels as though Heaven is Hell because he must serve G–d there, but in Hell, he has a true Heaven because he is served and worshipped. This could be determined as his tragic flaw.

A child's success is my main goal. Teaching young children is the most rewarding job to me because I know with careful and purposeful teaching I can make a difference in each child's life. I have created learning environments that are exciting and meaningful for young children. Creativity is one of my main focuses in all areas of learning. I want to see children draw pictures on plain paper and not color in coloring books, build houses and castles with blocks and not have a picture design to work from and begin to learn about who they are through imaginative play. I can learn about each child while observing or playing with them during their creative moments and I feel these opportunities are priceless. • 34. Analysis Of ' Eve 's Apology On The Fall Of Humanity ' Essay Although Aemilia Lanyer and John Milton were both writing on the Fall of humanity, their approaches to this topic were vastly different. Lanyer wrote "Eve's Apology in Defense of Women," in order to combat the widely–believed cultural idea of the time that placed the fault of the Fall entirely on Eve. Milton, on the other hand, is attempting to explore this biblical story in Paradise Lost to prove that Adam and Eve had free will, thus absolving God of responsibility for the fall. Lanyer and Milton differ in their portrayal of the fall through their depiction of Adam and Eve's relationship and their ideas about the free will of each of the characters. These factors ultimately lead Milton to present a portrait of the fall that seems more balanced and accurate. One of the reasons for which Milton and Lanyer portray the Fall differently in their texts is because of their views on the relationship between Adam and Eve. Firstly, although Lanyer does acknowledge that Adam and Eve share a strong bond, she often represents the relationship of Adam and Eve as a dictatorship, portraying Adam as the dictator. Because of this unbalanced power structure, which, in Lanyer's eyes, overtly favors Adam over Eve, Lanyer absolves Eve of responsibility for the Fall and places the blame squarely on Adam even though Eve offered the fruit to Adam. In portraying this perceived power structure, Lanyer states, "Let not us women glory in men's fall / Who had power given to overrule us all" (Lanyer, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Paradise Lost By John Milton Essay Eve in Paradise Lost In the visions of Western world and civilization, the descend of mankind from the Garden of Eden serves as the prominent, underlying story of the formulation of existence. In 1667, in the seventeenth century, author John Milton recasts the creation story in an epic form of poetry consisting of ten books with over ten thousand lines of verse, in order to conspicuously portray the characters and their actions that lead to the Fall of Mankind. In both Paradise Lost and the Bible, the blame for the banishment of mankind from the Garden of Eden is placed on Eve for falling into the seducing of Satan. Throughout his epic work, Milton conveys Eve 's advancement from an autonomous woman to a more reliant woman to portray that women are not essentially conceived as acquiescent beings. Eve is compelled into assent due to the patriarchal environment she is surrounded by, therefore attributing it and allowing her to "develop into a women." Paradise Lost conceives Eve as more than solely the mother of humankind and the wife of Adam. Milton 's emendation of Eve in a biblical sense alters the character from fixed as portrayed in the Bible to a more dynamic person in Paradise Lost. In doing so, Milton portrays to the reader a different and originally a more favorable perspective of Eve and her character. Conveyed through the Book of Genesis, in the Old Testament of the Bible, Eve is purely Adam 's wife who eats from the tree that God appointed as forbidden. "She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Analysis Of John Milton 's ' Paradise Lost ' During the mid to late 1600s, England was going through a period of change and controversy. This period of change was brought on as a result of the English Civil War and the government put in place afterwards, the Protectorate. Under the Protectorate, Oliver Cromwell, a military commander against the king during the civil war, was able to disguise his military dictatorship as a commonwealth. It was this government that won the support of the writer John Milton. Milton was known for his rhetorical writings against Charles I and for Oliver Cromwell at the time. It would not be until after the fall of Cromwell that Milton would complete his greatest work of literature however. When the Protectorate fell and Charles II rose to power in 1660, Milton was forced into hiding for fear that he would be punished for his involvement with Cromwell. This would actually benefit Milton for it was when he was in hiding that he was able to complete his great work, Paradise Lost, even though he was blind. In Paradise Lost Milton recants the tale of Satan's struggle, after being exiled from heaven for leading a revolt against God, and the lives of Adam and Eve. Throughout the epic, Satan journeys to both Earth and Eden in attempts to ruin all that God has worked to build. What Satan is unaware of however is that God knows all that he is doing and allows him to continue on his quest. This raises the timeless inquiry as to whether or not we possess free will and if so to what extent are the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Analysis Of John Milton 's ' The Fall Of Mankind ' Essay The story of the fall of mankind, explored by John Milton in his epic Paradise Lost, has a way of defining the roles of solitude through its characters, and through those definitions the effects solitude has overall. The epic explores how the good and bad of what happens when one is left alone in their thought, and deep into it, a question is asked by a main character, "who can enjoy alone, or all enjoying, what contentment find?" (Book 8. Line 365–66). The way alone is defined is "having no one else present, on one's own"; "taking or acting on its own"; and "no one or nothing else besides, exclusive of all other people or things". All three definitions will be explored, because in ways each definition applies to more than one character, and some characters are defined by more than one definition of alone. The way solitude is presented in Paradise Lost is that the time spent in solitude distances the characters from each other, and allows for both good and evil to come from their time spent alone. The main characters define solitude in their own way, some even use more definitions than others, and they share definitions among each other. Starting with God who is never alone, although God experiences solitude in the sense that God is one of a kind, which was an early sentiment shared with Adam before Eve was created. Satan in solitude allows for him to concoct schemes to ruin God's plans. Adam begins alone, and he does not like it, going as far as to fall along Eve because of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Relationship Between God And Adam The bible remains a mystery to many people in society today. Therefore, the relationship between God and Adam can be said to be a very complex relationship. Genesis shows us many examples of God 's interaction with Adam, apparently there is so much more about God's disappointment and righteous anger in the garden. The world of Christianity fails to see there's so much more to the story about God and Adam, I think many of us do the same. He was the first man, the father of mankind, however, Genesis does not fill–in the missing background information as to the reasons why man and woman came to be the first rational, mortal creations of God 's divinity. Moreover, most believers in the Bible do not know the specific similarities and differences regarding the two humans ' characteristics, and how their relationship impact each other as well as all other living creatures in the garden. We see the wrath, but we miss the grace. The bible does not tell if Adam was Baptized and upon his death he went to heaven, however many of religious leaders tried to read and to the relationship between god and Adam, without facts to back it up. Non statement should not be used to formulate doctrine. A conclusion cannot be drawn from something that God did not say. If it is not there, just leave the sentence and remove the brackets for the citation) Hell is a funnel shape pit that is divided into nine terraces. Virgil, Dante's escort resides in the area known as Limbo. He is placed in this area because he died before Christianity. Nevertheless, Virgil is not subjected to Hell. Each terrace provides living space for individuals who were in Hell for the different categories of sin for which they were suffering. The lower the terrace, the more severe the punishment. Satan resides in the very bottom level of Hell. Dante gives a very vivid description of his first sight of Satan when he writes, "The emperor of the despondent kingdom so towered–from midchest–above the ice, that I match better with a giant's height than giants match the measure of his arms; now you can gauge ... Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Essay Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell "The Nature of my Work is Visionary or Imaginative; it is an Endeavor to Restore what the Ancients calld the Golden Age." –William Blake (Johnson/Grant,xxiv). William Blake completed the manuscript of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, as well as the twenty–five accompanying engraved plates, in 1792. In the sense that the The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is a vision of a particular version of reality, it subscribes to one definition of the mythic, but also fulfills another as Birenbaum writes in Tragedy and Innocence: "...on a more specialized level..."true myth"...suggests a penentration to the essential nature of human experience, made by conspicuously violating features ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Blake uses traditional symbols of angels and devils, animal imagery, and especially images of fire and flame to: 1) set up a dual world, a confrontation of opposites or "contraries" which illustrate how the rules of Reason and Religion repress and pervert the basic creative energy of humanity, 2) argues for apocalyptic transformation of the self "through the radical regeneration of each person's own power to imagine" (Johnson/Grant, xxiv), and 3) reconstructs Man in a new image, a fully realized Man who is both rational and imaginative, partaking of his divinity through creativity. The form of the poem consists of "The Argument," expositions on his concepts of the "contraries" and of "expanded perception" which are both interspersed with "Memorable Fancies" that explicate and enlarge on his expositions, and concludes with "A Song of Liberty," a prophecy of a future heaven on earth. "Without Contraries is no progression. Attraction and Repulsion, reason and Energy, Love and Hate, are necessary to Human existence. From these contraries spring what the religious call Good & Evil. Good is the passive that obeys Reason. Evil is the active springing from Energy. Good is Heaven. Evil is Hell."

  • 57. Paradise Lost By John Milton In John Milton's poem, Paradise Lost, written out were twelve books that mainly focused on Adam and Eve. The plot essentially focuses on the defiance that Adam and Eve have created due to Satan's persuasive manner to destroy humankind. In book four, Milton introduces the creation of man. The Bible states, "the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground" (The Holy Bible (ESV), Genesis. 2.7). The name of God's creation is Adam. After contemplation, God realizes man shall not be alone. This is how the creation of Eve came about. It is stated, "The LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh" (Genesis. 2.21). God is good; however, he allows one to live through experience. The focus of this essay is in regards to Eve's realization of her identity. Her desires, her sighting of a creature and the reflection of water convey a larger message about the meaning of life. "For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD" (Psalm. 10.3). Desire is an interpretation of a strong need or want. Most view this term sexually, while others view it as a wish. In Paradise Lost, Milton writes, "Mine eyes till now and pined with vain desire" (Milton, 466). To be vain is saying one is of personal vanity. This is not a qualitative trait to possess for it means empty, useless or nothing. Not only is it a negative trait to obtain, but it does one wrong in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Adam & Eve Lost in Paradise Paradise Lost by John Milton: Discuss the relationship between Adam and Eve, as portrayed in Book 9 of Paradise Lost. How does Milton's portrayal compare to or differ from how Adam and Eve are typically portrayed, described, or understood? Thoughts of Eve conjure images of a meek woman who is submissive and created to serve her husband. Adam is thought of as a strong, beautiful man created in the likeness of God. He is the ruler of land and sea and leader of all mankind. Their relationship is thought of as idyllic and unified, even throughout and after their fall. However, Milton casts a different light on their relationship and personal traits in Book 9 of Paradise Lost. Adam's submissive helpmate becomes an independent, contrary, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, his love for her leads him to eat the fruit because if she is to die then he chooses to die with her because as he says in line 959 "to lose thee were to lose myself" (2111). Now that they both have sinned, the relationship becomes one of contention, contrary to the traditional image. Sexually it is lustful and depraved lacking the love and intimacy they once shared. Adam is no longer mild towards Eve, but accusatory and blaming even speaking harshly too her which is opposite of how he treated her before the apple. She in turn retaliates against him and tries to blame him for not being stronger. She even accuses of him of not being able to withstand the temptation if it had been him. Sadly, what becomes of their relationship is a blame game that is "fruitless" and controlled by pride with neither taking responsibility for their actions (2116). In the end of this book, Milton inserts an interesting point about the male/female relationship that easily could be overlooked. He switches from Adam making a point about Eve, to generalizing all women of which Eve is the representative. Adam talks of Eve's confidence and perfection and how much he admired her, but realizes that is where he went wrong calling it his "crime" (2116). Then he makes the shift towards women, which is craftily done by Milton, almost like a forewarning to men to beware of the power of women in the following: Thus it shall befall Him who to ... • 61. The Role of Satan in Paradise Lost The Role of Satan in "Paradise Lost" John Milton's epic "Paradise Lost" is one that has brought about much debate since its writing. This epic tells the Biblical story of Adam and Eve, although from a different perspective than what most people usually see. Milton tells the story more through the eyes of Satan, whom most people usually consider the ultimate villain. The way in which Satan is portrayed in this story has caused speculation as to whether Satan is actually a hero in this situation. He certainly has heroic qualities throughout the story, yet still is ultimately responsible for Adam and Eve's sin. Satan can easily be classified as a hero in this story, as well as the main antagonist, depending on the viewpoint of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The character of Satan in this story can also be related to other tragic heroes throughout history. He is a variant of Achilles, who equates honor with his own status...and feels slighted by his commander–in–chief, refuses his orders and believes himself superior. Both epics turn on the connection between 'a sense of injur'd merit' and the hero's wrath. He is Odysseus and Jason on their heroic voyages, leader and chief warrior in battle during and after the War in Heaven, and through it all the most powerful speaker, able to rally and organize his troops with the eloquence of his appeals to their own heroic values. (Forsyth 30). While many arguments can be made to defend Satan as the hero of this story, his power clearly declines throughout the poem. In the end, he does not achieve his goal. Satan is "bitter, but also acknowledges the reality of his circumstances" (Smith). We see Satan reach his peak, then his power gently declines by the end of the story. Although Satan is powerful and persevering, he is no match for God. We begin to see more of his flaws. Satan is undoubtedly charismatic and persuasive in his speeches, as well as a powerful military leader, yet he seems to be somewhat hypocritical as well. For example, when we are first introduced to Satan, he tells his followers not to be afraid, yet he is afraid himself. Some might view this as Satan being brave, but this could also be viewed as him being deceptive, which illustrates how he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein ' Karina Mousessian Ms. Stevenson English II Frankenstein Essay In Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, the creation, made from scraps of corpses, was built by Victor Frankenstein, a man fascinated and obsessed with the knowledge of life. Following the creation's rouse, Victor immediately abandons him with no desire on keeping or teaching his new being. Because of his lack of nourishment and direction "growing up", the creation goes through a process of self–deception. He endures a period of deceit by believing that he is a normal human being like everyone around him. But as time progresses, he learns to accept how he is alone in this world and disconnected with everyone. Because of the creation's lack of guidance and isolation, he grows up feeling unwanted. Living on his own with no direction on where to go, the creation acquires self–deception by viewing himself as a normal human being like the rest of society around him. As the creation is imagining what it would be like to be a part of the cottagers lives, he proclaimed, "I persuaded myself that when they should become acquainted with my admiration of their virtues, they would compassionate me and overlook my personal deformity," (Shelley 133). When the creation mentions that, "they would compassionate me and overlook my personal deformity", he is mindful of his monstrous appearance. • 65. Analysis Of William Blake 's ' Frankenstein ' Essay Sadaf Tabibzadeh English 6 Professor Dossett 10.02.2015 Contraries in Frankenstein Most people would think that contraries only exist to dominate each other, making the other side appear less significant. However, the opposite of this is true. The beauty of a rose stands out more because of the thorns that it contains. Without the thorns, it would just be an average flower. A day wouldn't be as bright if it wasn't compared to the darkness of night. And "joy wouldn't be so joyful, if it wasn't for pain" (50 cent). Contrasts highlight movements in an element, by pointing out the differences that are shown by the opposite side. They in fact, bring out the good and bad features in anything. William Blake is known for his famous quote, "Without contraries there is no progression." He continues to show contraries in many of his works, including "Marriage of Heaven and Hell", and his poem written in 1794, "The Sick Rose," Blake introduces the idea of contraries that are layered in the simplicity of these lines. At first, to the reader, it may only seem that he is writing about a simple dying rose, however there is more to it. He is also mentioning how this is benefiting the worm that decides to reside in it. The best interpretation that comes to mind, is the loss of virginity. The rose symbolizes a virgin, pure and untampered (a vagina). The "invisible worm" symbolizes the possibility of penetration (penis). This can be a feminist take on the idea of beauty and destruction. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Summary Of Four Children For Sale By Roland Barthes Roland Barthes describes the punctum of a photograph as "that accident which pricks me (but also bruises me, is poignant to me)" (Barthes 27). The punctum of a photo is not meant to be the focus of the image. It is the detail that sparks interest. In the photograph 4 Children For Sale, credited to Bettmann Corbis, the punctum for me is the sign or maybe the facial expressions of the children or the mother herself. I say for me because the punctum of a photo is not the same for every person. Every person sees an image differently. Different things will be more prominent to different people because the punctum is unique to the specific spectator. However, I do not know exactly which detail acts as the punctum. According to Barthes, "What I can name cannot really prick me" (51). The punctum does not necessarily have to be one detail though. If the punctum is what stings at you, what ultimately bothers you, the punctum can be made up of multiple pricks. Multiple subtle details that stop you and make you think of the photo in a new light. Overall, the punctum is what makes you question and what engages you to the photo. The sign is at least one of the sources of the punctum which can be described as "what I add to the photograph and what is nonetheless already there" (55). The focus of the photograph should be the children considering they are the ones being advertised and yet my attention is constantly drawn to the actual sign and not simply its message. • 71. Comparing The Pilgrim 's Progress And Paradise Lost Comparing The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost, Two Works Focused on Salvation Two influential pieces of English literature, both focusing on the topic of salvation, are The Pilgrim's Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1678 (2269), and Paradise Lost, composed in the previous decade by poet John Milton in 1667 (1945). While these two works both pay special attention to mankind's preoccupation with being saved, they differ vastly from one another in the language and literary style used in each respective piece, the way in which salvation itself is portrayed, and also in how the salvation of each story's characters is determined through their resistance to temptation and the state of their relationship with God. Before even mentioning the content of the works themselves, it becomes immediately evident that the writing styles of The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost are near polar opposites of one another. For example, in The Pilgrim's Progress, author John Bunyan writes in a simple prose style, which is relatively easy for most to comprehend. In contrast, John Milton, in Paradise Lost, employs a complicated, original poetic style that is the first of its kind. In using some Latin words and phrases while employing a rhyme scheme commonplace in Latin poetry, Milton is able to construct an eloquent, highly polished language in this piece. However, in still using English as the poem's primary language, Milton is still able to effectively communicate its theme to his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. John Milton's Epic Poem about Satan, Paradise Lost John milton is one of the most influential men in english writing today because of his outstanding work. He was an outstanding poet, who wrote poems that were outside the box. A great example would be one of his most famous pieces Paridise lost, written in blank verse. In paridise lost Milton concerns the biblical story of the fall of man by using Adam and Eve as the prime example. As Paridise lost goes on you can definetly start to notice that he puts one specific character ahead of all others and thats Satan. I believe miltons hero is Satan because of the way he talks about Satan in the epic poem. When the epic poem is read it sounds as if Milton ecourges the behavior of Satan. I Believe Milton considers Satan to be the hero, or protagonist, of the story, because he struggles to overcome his own doubts and weaknesses and accomplishes his goal of corrupting humankind. Satan is a very complex character in the epic poem. I belive Milton considers Satan as his hero because he want Satan to seem heroic and appealing early in the poem to draw us into sympathizing with him against our will, so that we may see how seductive evil is and learn to be more vigilant in resisting its appeal. Milton devotes much of the poem's early books to developing Satan's character. Satan's character changes significantly from Book I to his final appearance in Book X. In Book I he is a strong, imposing figure with great abilities as a leader and public statesmen, whereas by the poem's end he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. John Milton 's Paradise Lost In Early Modern England, the idea of men being superior to women was thought to be a God–given law. Sexism, though not yet coined as an English word at the time, was very prevalent in this time period and bled into the writing it produced. John Milton's Paradise Lost is no exception to this, as it explores human sexuality and gender roles. It has been argued that when Adam and Eve are described as "Two of far nobler shape erect and tall,/ Godlike erect" (4.288–289) there is no distinction between the two, and that they are being portrayed, even by Satan, as equal. This is the reader's first introduction to Eve who, based on these two lines from Paradise Lost, is Adam's equivalent in power and in majesty. However, this passage cannot be isolated and taken as the theme of the entire epic work: Milton goes right on to convey "Milton's idea that true freedom involves obedience to natural superiors" (Milton, p. 2009, footnote 9) by saying that there is "true authority in men" (4.295). Throughout Paradise Lost, Milton shows stark contrast between Adam and Eve, overall implying that Eve is a less perfect character. In his epic poem, Milton makes Eve out to be the misogynistic image of a simple, subordinate woman by showing her as being distanced from God, trained to be obedient to men, and conveying the negative outcomes that transpire when Eve is persuaded into making her own decision. By showing Eve's unwavering blind obedience, Milton characterizes her as a subservient woman who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, The Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost have the inept ability to stir the soul and cause a person to examine and re–examine their life. The brilliant descriptions, use of imagery, metaphor and simile give a person a vivid picture of the creation of man and the possibilities for life in the hereafter. This is done, as a person is able to see, full circle, from the beginning of time to the end of time, the consequences of turning away from God. The ability to see a life full circle is apparent through the examination of both of these poems. Although written many years ago, the morals and principles that they convey ring very true ... After a short hike, they arrive at ante–purgatory, which was the area designated for those who died without receiving full repentance or without receiving the holy sacrament before their death. After ante–purgatory, they enter purgatory, where an angel inscribed the letter P seven times on Dante's forehead. Each letter represented one of the seven deadly sins. Those seven sins include pride, envy, anger, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust. Each P will be erased as Dante travels through the areas that were reserved for those who had committed each of the seven sins. The importance of the title becomes obvious as Granny Weatherall's life flashes before her eyes. She is an 80–year–old woman who is bedridden, stubborn, sick, and in denial. She has four children one of whom had passed away: Lydia, Cornelia, Jimmy, and Haps. Critics agree that there is no sign from God that her soul will be accepted into heaven. Granny Weatherall expects a sign from God, but overlooks it when it is given. Granny undeniably gets a sign from God; however, she overlooks this sign because it is Hapsy her last–born daughter that had passed away. Granny has flash backs of her life that goes as far back as 60 years. Hapsy was the one that Granny wanted. "Did you send for Hapsy to?" (68) As Granny Weatherall moves closer to death her thoughts become more scattered. Making connections with her thoughts is possible to conclude that Hapsy is her favorite daughter that she longs to see once again. Hapsy had been her last–born child, that had passed away. "Hapsy melted from within and turned flimsy as gray gauze and the baby was a gauzy shadow, and Hapsy came up close and said, "I thought you'd never come," and looked at her very searchingly and said, "You haven't changed a bit!"
