R B Performative Gender Roles
Imagine two scenes. The first is set at a club where scantily clad women and men are dancing on stage
in which the men are singing about how they cannot control themselves around women, a scene that
sexualizes women in terms of a male gaze. The second is at two women s apartments where they fight
over a man, only to realize the scenario and throw their mutual boyfriend s stuff out the door. These
scenarios show two sides of the contemporary R B scene during the 1990s and 2000s. While one
depicts the sexual objectification of women, a topic that most people associate R B with, the latter
represents a rise of femininity that hetero normative masculinity suppresses. Contemporary R B is a
genre that incorporates the sound of funk, blues, pop, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Black feminism, according to Hartman (2011), is an epistemology that allows for better analyses of
women s roles in American society because from the standpoint of black women is a more detailed
picture of how race, class, and gender intersect more readily accessible (p. 7). In other words, it argues
that social issues are intersectional inextricably bound together. Thus, black feminist thought is
applied to black women who have some version of a feminist consciousness. The most prominent
example is Erykah Badu. Hartman states, Badu challenges the notion that femininity, sexuality, and
womanhood is enacted by a singular method and gives credence to the notion that sexuality is more
complex. Her music does not follow the traditional I need a man theme, but instead is about self
empowerment and equality, two themes that feminism encompasses. For instance, in her song Bag
Lady , Badu (2000) sings, Bag lady you gone hurt your back / Dragging all them bags like that in
which she continues and demands for her fans to not fall under the pressure of society s standards
because if the conforming continues, it will become a burden and hurt our backs. In the video, Erykah
Badu and four other black women, two of which are her mother and sister, are modestly dressed in
different colors while set in different environments like a school, a church, and the street. Each

Geoff, . I’M Looking Forward To Meeting With You Tomorrow.
Geoff,
I m looking forward to meeting with you tomorrow. I wanted to use this email to clarify what I d like
to cover tomorrow. Last time we talked about marriage, I feel like the conclusion of the conversation
was that I have the freedom to marry, and you gave me some passages in scripture to look at to start
thinking about marriage. When I talked to you last Sunday, I told you that I want to get engaged to
Katie and that we re both eager to get engaged. We re feeling pretty confident in our relationship but
there are a few things that we would like to work on. We discussed getting engaged in February and
getting married this summer. I want to get engaged in February and I don t want to wait but I still have
reservation. My reservation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5. Is sexual desire plating to big (or too small) a role in part of your decision? Sexual desire does not
play too big of a role in our relationship, but I am sexually attracted to Katie.
6. Do you have a track record of solving problems biblically? We couldn t decide how to answer this
question because we have not had any problems in our relationship yet. As far as individually, she said
that one of her big problems is that she likes to hold problems in until she blows, and that she s kind of
a people pleaser. I tend to be a little more abrasive with my problems, and I like to rip the wound
open. We ll see how that works out.
7. We agreed that we are very much heading the same direction in life. We agree on having children, I
m not sure if we agree on Church involvement, and I m not sure if we agree on missions, but I think
that those can be continuing discussions.
8. We couldn t think of any cultural differences that we have.
9. Do either of you have any complicating entanglements from past marriages or relationships?
We were sitting in my car discussing these questions after deciding that it was too brisk to go for a
walk. An elephant was sitting on my chest as I tried to fill my lungs with air, I wasn t sure If I could
get the words out. I decided to begin with the lesser of my two sins. I told Katie about the girl that I
had made out with in a dark room when I was 13 or 14. I

Effy Redman Is A Hero Essay
After thirteen years of discomfort, Effy Redman can finally smile. Although there is no definitive cure
for her facial paralysis condition, Moebius Syndrome, a plastic surgeon has fulfilled her long awaited
wish to express what others in the world around [her conveyed] every day (Effy Redman). Don t
actions like this undeniably capture the essence of true heroism? YES, this clearly denotes the virtuous
qualities of heroes that plastic surgeons possess. Philip Zimbardo, the world renowned psychologist

Comparing Freshwater vs. Saltwater Fishing Essay
Comparative Essay of Freshwater and Saltwater Fishing My friend had invited me along with him and
his family to the ocean. It was vacation for the family, but for him and me it was the beginning of a
week of serious business. We had an obsessive hobby to pursue. As avid and long term freshwater
fisherman, we were thrilled by the thought of catching those large and exotic saltwater fish we had
seen on television a billion times before. Yet little did we expect there to be such vast differences
between our freshwater fishing and the saltwater fishing, which we were about to pursue. We learned
through trial and much error that in order to have a successful saltwater fishing experience we had to
make adjustments to all the freshwater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not knowing what to expect, my friend and I had come prepared for about any possible situation. We
had brought along about every freshwater fishing rig and tactic from the mid south, despite the
insignificant probability that we might ever use some of them. Among these rarely used tactics was
that of using steel leaders, lengths of wire that are tied onto the end of the fishing line to ensure that
toothy fish don t bite the vulnerable, regular line when they strike the lure. The only time we had ever
used this tactic before was when fishing for gar, long and hideous fish that resemble alligators without
legs; but sure enough, our exceptional freshwater tactic did work. It spared our lures when fish bit, and
we began catching many fish.
Throughout the day we enjoyed catching countless fish with our petite, freshwater lures, yet the
surrounding fishermen never modified their methods of fishing so they also could experience the same
enjoyment. They patiently waited while a rod, as thick as a broomstick and as long as a car, sat in front
of them, bobbing with the current. Somewhere out in the ocean was their rig, a huge, crippled baitfish
swimming around in little circles, struggling, just calling for some hungry beast to engulf it. Those
fishermen never caught much, but when they did it was always a monstrosity, twenty pounds or more.
Word had it that just a week earlier a man had even caught a one

Essay Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway s tough, terse prose and short, declarative sentences did more to change the style
of written English that any other writing in the twentieth century. Ernest Hemingway had many great
accomplishments in his historical life but one event sticks out from the rest. The Old Man and the Sea
is one of Hemingway s most enduring works. Told in Language of great simplicity and power, it is the
story of an old Cuban fisherman, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here
Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of
defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novel confirmed his
power and presence in the literacy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He would later adapt this style to his fiction. In May of 1918, Hemingway became an honorary second
lieutenant in the Red Cross. He could not join the army due to a defective left eye (resentfully
inherited from his mother). On his first day of service across seas, he and other ambulance drivers
were assigned the horrific duty of picking up body parts from an exploded munitions factory. Death,
mostly of women, on such a scale was most definitely another very shocking moment in Hemingway s
young life. But he soon recovered from this experience and became known as the man who was
always where the action is. He would often sneak cigarettes and chocolate to soldiers on the Italian
front. It was on one of these occasions that he was severely wounded by an Austrian trench mortar.
Even with over a hundred pieces of shrapnel and an Austrian machine gun bullet logged in his leg he
managed to carry a wounded soldier a hundred yards to safety. He got the Italian Medal of Valor for
his courageous action. He spent his recovery time at the Ospedale Croce Rossa Americana, in Milan.
It is there that he met and fell for a thirty year old nurse called Agnes Hannah. To Ernest s
disappointment, Agnes was not willing to embark in a relationship. Ernest, who had not yet turned
twenty, who was a war hero, a journalist and a wounded soldier, was too

Methods Of Design For Social Capital
Methods of Design for Social Capital Social capital in collaborative economy intermediaries is
incorporated by design. This section outlines some of the available methods for designing for
inclusivity. Much of the existing research around designing for trust online focuses on increasing users
trust. Researchers Riegelsberger, Sasse, and McCarthy (2005) instead decided to design a framework
focusing on factors that lead the trusted actor (service provider) to act in a trustworthy manner. The
design heuristics include stable identity, traceability/accountability, group membership, group identity,
social presence, and recording outcomes. By limiting users to ATB Financial customers, trust is
created through stable identity and group ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the most common way to establish trust in the collaborative economy. A complaint of these
reputation systems is the accuracy of reviews given and the tendency to only provide extremely
satisfied or extremely unsatisfied reviews. Some platforms are aware of this and incorporate
mechanisms to encourage accurate, average reviews. For example, Airbnb added a feature in 2014 to
reveal host and guest reviews simultaneously to make both parties feel comfortable in leaving honest
reviews without the worry of a dishonest retaliatory review. The ATB gig site will not only reveal
reviews simultaneously, it will have a template for constructive feedback. The template will ask for a
rating and/or review of specific behaviours, such as adhering to the terms of the agreement. Both
parties, in advance of the gig, will negotiate the agreement to facilitate clear communication and
expectations. Rare and used mostly in online gaming, hybrid trust models use both network structure
and interactions to compute trust. In this model, interacting users exchange friend lists that are saved
as a friendship graph. The more frequent the interactions and the longer their duration, the higher the
trust value. This is an infrequently used trust model. This model may be considered for a future
iteration of the site, but only for ATB employees to identify service providers who would be a good fit
for a permanent role with ATB.

Evaluating The Current Incremental Budgeting System
1.1 Executive Summary This report reviews the company s current incremental budgeting system,
explores the beyond budgeting approach and looks at the alternative flexible methods available. In
Summary, although the managing director could continue to use the incremental system, it is
recommended that an Activity Based Costing strategy is adopted. Although the current incremental
method is simple and easy to understand, it has many drawbacks making it unsuitable for today s
economic environment. 1.2 Objectives Taking into consideration the current economic climate, to
investigate how beneficial a beyond budgeting approach would be, in regards to flexibility and
financial control of the business. To also explore the possibility of adopting an Activity Based Costing
system and the benefits it would bring to the company. Lastly, after reviewing the benefits and
shortcomings of all three methods of budgeting, determine which method is the most suitable for the
managing director. 1.3 Background to budgeting The process of budgeting is one of the most
important management tools available to a business, particularly in today s current economic climate.
It serves three major purposes; coordinating activities and tasks, motivating employees and allows for
forecasting of future developments and events in order to prepare for the future of the business
effectively (Weber, 2005). 2.1 Incremental Budgeting According to M.M Ibrahim and R.A Proctor

How An Accelerometer Works, One Must First Understand The...
Introduction
To understand how an accelerometer works, one must first understand the concept of vibration. One
example of vibration is sound. When an object vibrates and creates a disturbance in a medium, it
creates a sound wave. The sound wave travels in sinusoidal form with certain frequencies. This affect
was observed in this experiment with a guitar string, a motor, and a cell phone. The vibration of these
systems can be measured with an accelerometer. The accelerometer converts mechanical acceleration
to an electric signal.
To record the data measured by the accelerometer, the DAQ system LabVIEW was used. LabVIEW
collected the time and frequency data from the plucked guitar string. An important aspect of the DAQ
system is the sample rate, or the number of measurements it can make in a certain amount of time. It is
an important parameter because without a high enough sample rate, highly dynamic behavior may not
be recorded. Another problem with using an insufficient sampling rate is aliasing which is the
misinterpretation of high frequency signals as lower frequency components. To prevent this, the
sample frequency must be twice the highest frequency. Any signal in the system that is above the
Nyquist frequency, which is half the sampling frequency, is subject to aliasing, or false frequency
measurement. This means that the data is only reliable up to half of the sampling frequency. However,
a sample rate that is too high leads to difficult data processing and noise

Legally Blonde Was Released, Telling The Story Of Elle Woods
Fourteen years ago, the romantic comedy Legally Blonde was released, telling the story of Elle
Woods, a ditzy sorority girl who follows her ex boyfriend, Warner, to Harvard Law School in hopes of
proving to him that she is not just another dumb blonde and winning him back. Elle studies hard,
forgets about Warner, and ends up graduating as valedictorian with job offers from multiple
prestigious law firms. While making audiences laugh, the movie also inspired those who were
undervalued and doubted by others to go to college, with the message that if they studied and worked
hard enough, anything is possible. However, regardless of work ethic and intelligence, this aspiration
is impossible for most. Even if one is accepted into their dream university, there is still the underlying
issue of how they will pay for their education. For many, college is an important step in achieving
success, but paying for a high quality college education is impossible. Even for those who find a way
to pay, their chances of success are sabotaged by the price of their degree, despite the importance of a
college education. Although in the twenty first century there is significant emphasis on the necessity
of a college degree, qualified students are prevented from reaching their full potential because of the
rising cost of a college education. College prices are rapidly rising; public four year college tuitions
are rising at an average of 5.6% every year, while public two year college tuitions are

other Americans due to the fear of Communism after World War II. During the age of McCarthyism,
many Americans would not associate themselves with Un American activities, Americans were too
paranoid that any American could be a Communist. This brought the issue of being addressed and
labeled as a Communist which created the potential of never being employed or fired from your work
entirely, family members would be isolated from the rest of society for the accusation. In the article A

Gender Expectations In Zack Hostetler s Zoology
In any given field today, gender expectations can often influence the roles of men and women. Many
career paths are seen as feminine or masculine and can deter young students from choosing a field
they might really enjoy. Such as a young women who dreams of being a doctor, but instead becomes a
nurse. One field that is not generally affected by gender, or so it seems, is Zoology. A bachelor in
Zoology who is now seeking a Masters degree, Zack Hostetler had many insightful comments to make
on how gender affects his field as well as his life. Hostetler s specific field of interest is in

The Life And Work Of Roger Corman
How I Made A Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime completely changes how
people view the industry of filmmaking, by providing the story of one man who battled against the
odds and inspired generations to come. The novel chronicles the life and work of Roger Corman, a
pioneer in the filmmaking industry. Filmmaking is a visual literature; just like how novels can change
a person s beliefs or perspectives, film can have a long lasting effect on the audience it touches.
Similarly, this is what Roger Corman accomplished with his movies. Although he initially had a little
money, experience, and support, Roger Corman s life has inspired and challenged generations of
people. Furthermore, this book proves Gregory Currie s belief that Great Literature Makes Us Better
by acting as a particularly apt teacher of moral[s] through widespread inspiration (Currie).
The basis behind Currie s argument is that many people enjoy the hard won pleasures of literature...
[and] reap aesthetic rewards from their reading (Currie). In this case, Currie s proposition can be
directly supported by the lessons and values rewards imparted on the audience through the description
of Roger Corman s life. Although Corman had little to no money, he continued to pursue his dream of
filmmaking. The book begins by describing Corman s life preceding his filmmaking career. When
Roger was young, his family moved from Detroit to Beverly Hills. Corman describes this experience,
saying, I felt

Transition from Elementary to Middle School Essay
Children confront many transitions throughout their lifetime that can be stressful. They face their first
transition from home to school, elementary to middle school, middle to high school, and high school
to college or work (Schumacher, 1998). However, the transition from elementary to middle school
seems to be harder for adolescents due to the personal changes of puberty. Research suggests that
roles, expectations, and responsibilities are the primary concerns of students (Akos, 2002). In order to
make this transition easier, programs such as blocking, shadowing, or buddies need to be implemented
the year preceding middle school and continue through the first year of transition.
The transition from elementary to middle school is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another major concern is personal safety. Students worry about aggressive and violent behaviors of
other students (Schumacher, 1998). It is not easy to focus on learning when fear controls your
emotions (Ferguson, Bulach, 1994). Transition programs need to teach children conflict skills they can
use when they are being teased or victimized (Kingery, Erdley, 2007).
Preventive programming is needed to assist students that will be making the change to a new school
(Akos, 2002). The best programs are the ones custom made to suit each district (Dillon, 2008). Three
transition programs that are being used by some districts are shadowing, blocking, and buddies. The
shadowing program begins for students the year prior to middle school. Students from the middle
school visit the elementary classes for fifteen or twenty minutes to answer questions. They also
provide sample schedules, extracurricular handouts and demonstrate how to use an agenda. The next
step takes the elementary classes to visit the middle school to shadow students for a day of instruction.
The students begin and end the day by meeting with counselors to set expectations and answer
questions. Some schools set aside extra time to meet with high risk students. The counselors take these
students on a tour of the building to help them locate their classrooms. During the summer, some
middle schools set dates for students and parents to

Perceiving Dogs Equal Vs. Property
Perceiving Dogs Equal vs. Property In general, dogs are associated with loyalty, companionship, and
aid. In Pam Houston s A Blizzard Under Blue Sky, the narrator attempts to treat her depression
through experiencing the adventure of spending a night outside in the cold weather of Utah. Then, the
narrator becomes successful in her adventure with the support and assistance of her two dogs, Hailey
and Jackson. On the contrary, in Jack London s To Build a Fire, a man is traveling along the Yukon
Trail, on his way to his group of friends where he encounters a dog who grows to have a poor
relationship with the man but remains with him until his death. The similarities and differences
between the two relationships make a comment on interactions between humans and animals. The
comparison of these two short stories demonstrates how dogs are only beneficial to humans when they
are deemed an equal and a counterpart, however not as valuable when disrespected through regard as
one s property. The narrator of A Blizzard Under Blue Sky exemplifies the components of a
relationship between a dog and an individual that produces mutual benefit. The essential piece is
equality, which is expressed in both the actions the narrator takes toward the dogs as well as the
dialogue between the three characters: Jackson, Hailey, and the narrator. The existence of dialogue
between them alone reveals equality because dialogue in general is exclusive between two human
characters but in this

Sexual Assault Prevention Essay
Sexual Assault Prevention
Sexual Assault Prevention
Every two minutes a woman is sexually assaulted in the United States (FBI, 2003). According to the
Federal Bureau of Investigation, sexual assault is the most under reported violent crime in the United
States. In 2005, the Armed Forces received 2,374 reports of alleged cases of sexual assault involving
its members. Of these figures, the Air Force received 584 reports. That is an increase of 28 percent
over the past year (DoD, 2005). The Air Force is concerned with the safety, dignity, and well being of
all its members. The Air Force does not tolerate sexual assault and has implemented a comprehensive
policy that reinforces prevention, response, and accountability.

The Air Force is focusing on eliminating those barriers by providing both unrestricted and restricted
reporting. Unrestricted reporting is recommended for victims of sexual assault who desire medical
treatment, counseling, and an official investigation of the crime. Since June 2005, military victims of
sexual assault have been offered a restricted reporting option, which allows those who have been
sexually assaulted to receive medical treatment and support without automatically triggering a
criminal investigation.
In an effort to ensure victims receive consistency in support services provided, the Air Force has
instituted essential training tasks for first response groups, such as medical personnel, law
enforcement and chaplains. Furthermore, the Air Force has trained 201 permanent Sexual Assault
Response Coordinators (SARC) to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Offenders can only be
held accountable for their actions if the victim reports the crime as unrestricted.
According to a 2000 Criminal Victimization Survey, only 16% of reported rapes result in prison
sentences. Furthermore, the closer the relationship between the victim and the offender the greater the
likelihood that law enforcement will not be told about the sexual assault. The Air Force has been
aggressively addressing this national problem. Military commanders have a variety of punishment
options for alleged offenders. The disposition in

Utilising A Wide Range Of Sources Critically Evaluate And...
Utilising a wide range of sources critically evaluate and discuss the following statement:
Dangerousness is said to be socially constructed.
Dangerousness is a term that is used in various settings such as legal, academic, administrative and
popular discourse (Bennett, n.d:3.). The meaning of the term can vary throughout the different settings
(ibid). In criminology the term often corresponds with acts of violence, and is used to label an
offenders potential level of risk of harm they may cause (Farrington and Tarling, 1985:175). Someone
who is labelled as dangerous is thought to pose as a threat or risk to society. However, dangerousness
is not easily defined; it can actually cover a range of factors; which makes it more of an umbrella
term. For example, three distinct constructs such as risk factors, potential harm, and risk level are used
to determine dangerousness (Greene and Wrightsman, 2007:263). Nevertheless, even though the term
lacks a clear and concise definition, it is used on a daily basis to make very important decisions
regarding offenders who have been previously convicted of a specified offence such as, a violent
offence, or a sexual offence (Legislation.gov.uk, 2003). Society is becoming increasingly obsessed
with danger or risks to health and safety, and anxiety and fear are becoming a more dominated feature
in everyday life (Furedi, 2007:198). It is thought that dangerousness is a product of societal
construction, this essay will assess how

The Preface Starts Off By William Lloyd Garrison
The preface starts off by William Lloyd Garrison describing his encounter with Frederick Douglass at
an anti slavery convention in Nantucket. Garrison tells us that Frederick Douglass made an escape
from the southern prison house of bondage and that his speech at the convention was a memorable
one. Frederick Douglass s had eloquence and a skill of persuading. Connecting people s minds and
hearts to his words of description about the reality of slavery. The audience responded with great
attention and created a common perspective about the actuality of slavery that Frederick Douglass
describes. As soon as Frederick Douglass finished his speech, Garrison arose and declared that the

Rather than the descriptions revealed by the masters who might have hide the significant facts about
his slaves life and the mistreatments they receive. Phillips was also glad to learn a lot of the true facts
from Douglass s narrative and learns the wretchedness of death that gathers over the souls of the
slaves before they could even learn their A B C s. Phillips also mentions that Frederick Douglass
originates from a state (Maryland) where the conditions for a slave were less harsh than the other
states in the Deep South. Where one can only imagine the horrors that surrounded the slaves in those
states. Wendell Phillips also praises his book and is also confident that whoever reads his book will be
persuaded towards the cause of anti slavery and that since Frederick Douglass is a marvelous and

The Scientific Methods And Differences Between Specific...
A scientific method is a method of investigation where a problem is first identified and observations,
experiments or other relevant data/findings are then used to construct or test hypotheses that serve to
solve it (https://www.collinsdictionary.com). Originally the scientific method was actually called the
experimental method and the method of science. When the word scientific was come up with in the
19th century, the most widespread term applied to the method became known as the scientific method
(scientificmethod.com). One difference between specific science and pseudoscience is how they start.
Specific science involves careful observation and experimentation to establish or deny a hypothesis.
Evidence against a theory and law are searched for and studies closely on the other hand
pseudoscience starts with a hypothesis and looks only for evidence to support it, there is little or no
experimentation. Evidence against the hypothesis is hidden, excused or ignored. The original
hypothesis is never abandoned (http://physics.weber.edu).
An exampleof pseudoscience is ufology. This is the study of records, reports, physical evidence and
other circumstances relating the UFO s. An example of specific science is evolution. This is the idea
that living organisms developed from earlier versions of themselves over a long period of time
throughout the history of the earth (https://en.wikipedia.org).

Joyce Mri As A Cultural Icon Summary
Joyce approaches MRI as a Cultural Icon. As a cultural icon, the MRI symbolizes both the progress of
medicine as well as a powerful technology to reveal details about one s medical condition. Joyce
proposes that the MRI is not only a icon which is entwined in our life but is also a great illustration of
many cultural movements. The chapter starts with the a story to demonstrate how a person s life may
revolve around the MRI. Getting an MRI is like opening the box of Schrodinger s cat. Without an
MRI you can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a problem. But after the MRI you have visual
proof of the problem. Joyce focuses on how this visual proof and confirmation has multiple cultural
implications. Most of the points she raises relate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I found this very interesting as It connects to the idea of Trust, but verify , a Russian phrase commonly
used by Reagan during talks with Russia. When we have a cancer or sickness the stakes are high and
so are the emotions. Denial of a condition can easily be refuted with proof that the patient can
understand. Although MRI s are great at helping doctors, patients also benefit from seeing visual proof
of a condition. Joyce writes about our growing trend towards visualization and how everyone is
accustomed to cameras and computers. Even in the operating room visual technology is used as both
surveillance and an aid. In addition to helping doctor, Joyce also brings up the point on how an MRI
illuminates a doctor s fear of litigation. Lawsuits are common to medical practices and the fear of
litigation is always present. The cultural trend of scepticism and the need to cover your ass makes the
use of MRIs much more common. With an image, a doctor could argue how their interpretation was
right or wrong and it is easier than explaining what he/she observed. She also briefly brought up a
point on how MRIs can symbolize inequality as getting a MRI shows that you have access to the best

The Role of the Visual in Today s Society Essay
The Role of the Visual in Today s Society
The role of the visual in today s society is quite apparent. Beautiful, flashy images are everywhere in
the media, and all of them serve the same purpose. The purpose of all of these images is to get you,
the consumer to buy the product that is being sold, or at least buy into the idea that a particular product
represents. The role of the visual in modern architecture is very much the same. The purpose of the
visual in modern architecture is to publicize or privatize a building through any media necessary to
create the desired representation, and thereby sell the idea. In the case of Le Corbusier, the goal was to
create a very visual and public architecture. He recognized that not ... Show more content on

The few original pictures that Corbusier took of this building are what actually put Villa Savoye on the
map as an architectural achievement. The images speak of movement, seen in the ramp. They
demonstrate the progression one would take from the ground to the roof, and from there to the vast
expanse beyond. They also speak of the temporality of the building, as if it just happened to be there
when Corbusier was walking by and decided to take this picture. There is also an inherent lack of
privacy common to all of the images. It is as if the whole world can look inside of the building and see
what the occupants are doing, which is precisely what Corbusier wanted. Thus he took them and
published the images, which were then distributed all around the world. He also mad a movie of the
building called L Architecture d aujour hui (1929), which demonstrated his voyeuristic approach to
how architecture should be seen. Villa Savoye, for example, is an apparatus (like a cinema) that
privileges the eye over the body, movement over stasis, and fragmentation over unity. Every window
is a lens, a purely visual opening; circulation is a poetic event of movement, orchestrated by ramps
and spiral stairways; the house acts as a dynamic and shifting catalyst to experience, not as a static and
finite center of experience. Publishing these images, and the making of the movie ended up making
Villa Savoye possibly the most public building of the time, and one of the most popular buildings

A Job As A Pharmacist
You will never know whether you like that job or not until you really have a chance to observe and get
to know by yourself. Thanks God that I love it, but it s not an easy job anyway. My Aunt Mrs. Chi
Tran really means it when she talks about her job as a Pharmacist. Her passion for a job always
inspires me to follow my career as a pharmacist, and to be someone like her. However, I have never
had a chance to see her at work. So this time, I decided to sleep over to have a full view of her
working day. Eight hours being totally concentrated and carefully review more than 100 prescriptions
without any mistake is what she has to do every day. However, that is just a part of this job. Being a
Pharmacist is totally not as easy as I thought.
After ten years working for CVS Pharmacy, my aunt asked for working at home to take care of her
children. CVS was really nice that they gave her an opportunity to have a work life balance with the
condition that she had to work at really early in the morning. It has to be exactly 3:00 am every
morning. To interview her, I tried to wake up 2:30, made her a cup of coffee and tried to have a quick
chat before she got started. CVS let me work at home because no one wants to wake up that early in
the morning to review all the prescriptions other than me. I can do everything to have more time with
my children. She took a mouthful of coffee and smiled: However, working at home under the
supervision of a computer is much more stressful than

The Discovery Of The Scientist s The Technologists, Along...
Before MIT was founded in 1861, the common take on knowledge was quite different than that of our
modern day. Education was primarily for a wealthy upper class, who regardless of work ethic or true
intelligence, had safety nets of incredibly well off families often with money to spare. As noted in
Matthew Pearl s The Technologists, along with Bruce Sinclair and Merritt Roe Smiths articles on MIT
s foundation, Harvard and other schools for this elite class focused on a purely knowledge based
learning system; while MIT attempted to introduce a more technical education combining pure science
along with practical applications of technology, thus ushering in a new style of technical education.
In 1861, founder William Rodgers, chartered one of the first technical schools in MIT. While growing
up a geologist, in 1831, Rodgers began contemplation the connections between pure science and its
applications to engineering (Smith 16), which little to his knowledge, would be the basis of a new
institution. When Rodgers decided to introduce the idea for a technical institute, he had already
mapped out a path for the curriculum and its basis. Introduced and now known as the New Education ,
Rodgers s idea, set forth by Charles W. Eliot, brought on an entirely new technical education that had
almost never been seen before.
Rodgers s idea, along with Eliot s, changed the way many viewed education of the sciences and
applied technologies. With a majority of the wealthy population attending

Lysistrata Theme Essay
Lysistrata amuses audiences through different comedic techniques to explore complex themes that
Lysistrata puts forward. Many of these themes can be related within today s society. The main themes
that are presented within the play Lysistrata are obedience, the woman are no longer prepared to obey
the men and this gives up the typical stereotype of traditional house wife s and mothers. Another
theme is sex, the women use sex as a weapon to fight against the men to stop fighting in the war
between Athenians and Spartans (look that up). The last main theme shown in Lysistrata is war, the
men is the play are fighting a war and the women are fighting in a war against the men to stop them

Being Godless Wastelands Are Wrong
Throughout this world we call Earth, there aren t many regions or continents that we humans call
home that don t have a desert biome, they existence on almost every continent. According to the
Conserve Energy Future or CEF, Deserts cover about twenty percent of our earth , (Rinkesh,n.d).
When the word Desert comes to mind you think of a hot, and lifeless wasteland that takes. However, I
believe the stereotypical thought of Deserts being godless wastelands are wrong. I believe it is actually
just a functioning, flushing environment just as any other.
Biomes that are classified as Deserts biomes have one thing in common, they receive less than 50 cm
or 19.7 inches of rain a year. This is barely enough to support life. This is also taking into account
some fog, dew, and possibly hail and snow. However, even with all the extra precipitation, these lands
still experience less than 50 cm of rain a year. Desert biomes are located on every major landform, in
some cases more than one. According to the CEF, [...] there are four major types of deserts you may
come across, Hot and Dry Desert, Semi arid Desert, Coastal Desert, Cold Deserts, (Rinkesh,n.d). Hot
and Dry deserts are stereotypically what you would imagine a desert being like, hot dry and almost
lifeless. These are located all over the world. The United States is home to 3 of them, the Mojave,
Chihuahua, Sonoran. Semi arid Deserts are like Hot and Dry Deserts expect they are much cooler and

Introduction
The Personal Computer industry has revolutionized the way of life. Technological forces have the
most significant influence on the computer hardware industry. The extremely short product life cycle

within the industry. It challenges companies to maintain superior inventory management and supplier

Constitutional Changes After The American Revolution
Merriam Webster s dictionary defines a revolution as an, activity or movement designed to effect
fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation. or, a fundamental change in the way of thinking
about or visualizing something. In this sense, the constitutional and social developments of the United
States of America between 1860 and 1877 amount to a drastic revolution. Previously to Abraham
Lincoln s election to the position of the American Presidency, slavery was an institution deeply rooted
in Southern American s way of life. Throughout Lincoln s terms and following his assassination,
America underwent many constitutional changes and dealt with a changing social order as well. The
most notable of these was the uprooting of the institution of slavery and the effect it had on the United
States of America. Senator John Sherman, a Republican from Ohio, gave a speech in congress in 1863
in which he discussed new banking and currency systems. In this speech, he highlighted some
revolutionary actions taken by states. He stated that, It has been the principle of states rights, that bad

Culture comes within language, symbols, values and beliefs. These things define what a culture is like.

Commissioner Teodulo Navidad saying that this would be declining the people their power to choose

Descriptive Essay On The Abdominal Snowman
Snow white. Casper. The abdominal snowman. Why do these characters all sound so familiar to me?
Well, it is simply because I am a very fair skinned brunette. . I describe myself as bright white. I never
realized how white I was until people felt the dire need to tell me. As a young child, I never really
thought it was a big deal either. But as we age, we learn new things that perhaps we did not recognize
before. People say that some things in life, you just never forget. This indeed is very true. Several
summers ago I was at a friend s house playing volleyball with a few people. Does it bother you that
you are so white? asked a girl who I did not even know. I dropped the ball and stared at her with a
blank face. All that was running through my mind was Does it bother you that you are so obnoxious?
But of course I did not actually vocalize this thought. I simply kept playing volleyball. But soon after I
questioned myself, Does it bother me? Should it bother me? I went home that day and took a long
look in the mirror. Then it hit me, I was whiter than most people were. Sure, I ve heard plenty of
people say, You need more color and I m going to call you Casper. However, this one stranger s
comment made me wonder. I began to overthink and shortly after my self esteem dropped. I would
look in the mirror and think that maybe if I was tan I would be prettier. I thought that maybe if I was
tanner I would not be judged by people, including family and friends. Then,

A Cultural Problem, an Economic Crisis
In the past two years, Western society has experienced what many of its leaders have called the worst
financial crisis since the Great Depression. At the very least, it has been the worst period of instability
that our younger generations have ever seen in their lifetimes. But unlike other financial crises that
have largely been triggered by external forces, such as the oil embargoes of the 1970 s, this latest one
was a product of our own internal policies and practices; even more so, of our cultural outlooks on the
very notion of finance, credit, and debt itself. Specifically, the financial crisis that has just come to
pass was the result of the new culture of neo liberalism and the hyper individuality and debt based
consumption that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This higher level shift in the modes of production in Western society has been one of the major
sources of the cultural shift that has led to our modern state of affairs. From Fordism to the post war,
entire families would form professional identities around the head of the household s employer. With
the shift in the modes and local of production that neo liberal globalization however, the current
generations cannot form such attachment or association. As Barry puts it, the new flexible form of
capitalism has transformed the work experience and as a result people can t identify themselves with a
particular labour or with a single employer .
So then, if someone of the current generation, by virtue of the neo liberal system into which they have
been born, cannot form a profession identity like their fathers or grandfathers had, what does that
leave? Smart points out that, without the confidence or security that employment held before modern
global neo liberalism, people have increasingly formed their identities around their time off the clock.
Personal and cultural identities have formed, indeed entire sub cultures of society have formed around
the activities that people choose to participate in when they are not working. Consumption of the
goods that are produced by overseas markets has thus become the new economic culture of Western
society, so

Christopher M. Sigerson of the IRS, (2008) said it best when he said, We should not forget that the

government money loaned to the firm can be allocated to establishing counter defense mechanisms
against UAVs, comprised of a detecting and neutralizing component. Radar systems are the detecting
component of the system, capable of electronically detecting UAVs from long ranges. The radar s
ability to spot potential threats from large distances allows preparation time to neutralize the threat.
The most efficient countermeasure against UAVs is jamming the operator s connection to the device,
and then intercepting the signal to overtake control of the drone. The dual component defense
mechanism is ideal for the current technological landscape, as it readily identifies and disarms any

Franchising Is A System Or Method Of Marketing A Product...
In general, franchising is a system or method of marketing a product or service. Since a Franchisor
develops a special product, service or system and has been recognized in nation, then it is possible to
exploit the current business. A franchisor grants a right or license to independent businessmen
throughout the world. Another definition emphasizes that franchising is an agreement between two
legally independent parties. (Lafontaine and Shaw, 1999) In this agreement business owner
(franchisor) license its trademark and business concept out to a person or a group of people
(franchisee). Franchising is a form of business that both parties get benefit and satisfaction when
properly structured and well run. Because between franchisor and ... Show more content on

These dues provide revenues necessary for the franchiser to operate and provide systems, training,
marketing, promotion and other services to all the franchise owners in the system. (Selig, 1998)
Figure 1 Franchising Concept
According to the Department of Commerce, the following are some of the major reasons why
companies decide to franchise (Selig, 1998)
Franchising provides an effective method for raising capital to finance expansion.
Franchising enables the franchiser to pool resources, advertise and promote, achieve economies of
scale in purchases, expand internationally and develop new products and services.
Franchising provides the franchiser quality control, consistency, and uniformity over goods and
services produced and/or distributed as well as media, public relations, image and appearance.
Franchising provides flexibility for respond¬ing to changing customer needs and emerging markets
within a wide variety of sectors.
Individuals become franchisees for a number of reasons.
Individuals, who want to become business owners versus employees, are not comfortable doing it
alone, but are comfortable working within a framework such as a franchise.
Individuals want to pursue the American dream of achieving high rewards through risk sharing in a
quasi structured environment.
Individuals want the benefits of a franchiser s name recognition, network, systems, training, and
infrastructure to help establish and grow

Lawn Water Research Paper
One reason why lawns sometimes aren t as lush and green as homeowners want is because they may
not be getting enough water. Water is important for grass. Especially grass that has just started
growing. You have to water grass seed, and grass as it begins sprouting. Homeowners may want the
look of green grass, yet, they might not have the time, desire, or energy to go out and water it. The
good news is, you don t have to give up on your dreams of a beautiful lawn. Call us and ask about the
irrigation systems that we, at WS Home Maintenance in Gilbert, AZ, can install for you. Irrigation is
the best way to care for the lawn, plants, and landscaping. There are many benefits that come from
providing water in this way. Watering with the hose can

Disadvantages Of Censorship In Movies
Censorship is the suppression or prohibition of movies. Censorship is used in many things as Music,
the news and all sorts of public places. But the main one censorship in movies. Movies are censored
because the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) doesn t want people to know or see
Inappropriate content. The Government also decides what gets censored because they wanna make
sure that people don t see very inappropriate content. On the News, the Government also censors so
people don t see very violent wars or videos. There are many benefits of censorship. One of them is
that kids are able to go to a movie theater and know that it is appropriate for them to see. Also, adults
know when they are seeing a kids movie or a movie more for their age. The drawbacks to censorship
are that censorship is determined by an organization so if they make a mistake it wouldn t be good for
a kid to go to the movie theater. Censorship is acceptable because nobody wants to see very
inappropriate content in a movie. Parents rely on censorship of movies so they know if their children
can watch the movie. An example of this is if a parent wants to take their kids to a movie and there
was no censorship how would the parent know if there are sex scenes or war scenes that would be
inappropriate for kids to watch. Another example would be adults went to go and see a movie and it
was for kids. Without censorship, people cannot safely go to movies. The MPAA rating system has
helped parents and

Ai Weiwei s Repressive Government
China is home to one of the world s most repressive and restrictive governments. There is near
absolute control over its citizens, by the government, and it seems as if Big Brother is always keeping
an eye on its comrades. This repressive and suppressive government is also home to one of the world s
most powerful artists. Ai Weiwei has made a name for himself as a rebel who has not only created art
in direct defiance to his government, but who has also criticized those pieces of art which he has made
in the name of said government. Ai Weiwei is one of China s most effective activists because of his
provocative art, persistence, and subversive attitude. Ai Weiwei is controversial for multiple reasons,
but his art sends a powerful message, nonetheless. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When looking at Ai s work, criticisms have included attacks on the reason he is considered famous, as
well as his impotence in his own country. As for his fame, the Chinese Ambassador to England said, in
an interview with the BBC, that Ai is only famous because of the focus of his art. Most of Ai s work
attacks the Chinese government. The ambassador believes that this criticism of the government is why
Ai is exalted as being such an important artist. In that same interview, Liu Xiaoming called Weiwei a,
so called artist, who is only famous because he is, critical to the Chinese government. Furthermore,
many would argue that Weiwei is only famous because of the provocation of his work. There are many
other artists in China, many of whom directly criticize the Chinese government, according to the New
Yorker. Weiwei could also be seen as being subversive to his own government, in a negative way. His
tactics tend to be vulgar, and do receive attention, however, the attention received tends to be around
the works themselves, not the meaning behind them. Rather than actually being critical to the
government, Weiwei s work is easily viewed based in interest and shock value, more than the actual
message of rebelliousness. In this context, Weiwei is not a revolutionary artist, but a mainstream artist,
who bears no relevance to his own people. In his own country, Weiwei is not

Malcolm X Learning To Read Summary
Many people know Malcolm X for his work in the civil rights movement, but few know about his time
in prison stay and how it was spent. After being released, X put his newly found knowledge from
prison with teachings of Islam to become the distinguished civil rights activists people know today. In
Learning to Read , X describes his journey of learning to read, understanding the truth about
Europeans, and realizing how powerful blacks could be if they knew their true history. X began his
self education because of the inability to express himself in letters to his mentor, Elijah Muhammad.
According to X, he began to envy prisoners who were knowledgeable, ... Bimbi first made me feel
envy of his stock of knowledge. (1). X began copying words from the dictionary into a tablet, until he
had learned all the words in it. Broadening his vocabulary allowed X to understand books in the prison
s library. In his view, the newly acquired knowledge opened a new world, ... I had never been so truly
free in my life. (2). The wide selection of books available to X enabled ... Show more content on

With further study, X realized the very unpleasant acts Europeans had done, saying it ... opened my
eyes gradually... how the whole world s white men had indeed acted like devils, pillaging and raping
and bleeding and draining the whole world s non white people. (4). X continued his research, finding
Europeans had wronged multiple populations of innocent people. Africans, Chinese, and Indians are
just a few groups that were punished and exploited throughout the centuries. X believed all groups
wronged by the white population would soon come together, forming an alliance saying, ...a new
world order being shaped, along color lines an alliance is among the non white nations. (5) Beside
studying the history of Europeans, he took a special interest in the history of

Concepts and Philosophies
Discuss why scale and resolution are important for your dissertation research
Scale can be a confusing definition in geography with its multiple referents. Scale is about size, either
relative or absolute, and involves a fundamental set of issues in geography. Scale primarily concerns
space in geography. However, the domains of temporal and thematic scale are also important to
geographers. Temporal scale deals with the size of time units, thematic scale with the grouping of
entities or attributes such as people or weather variables. Whether spatial, temporal, or thematic, scale
in fact has several meanings in geography. (Montello, 2001) .The definition of resolution on the other

from soil sample to cantena to catchment or watershed. The problem with this is that generalisations
made at one level or scale does not always hold at other scales. Sampling can be done at the regional
scale with sampling the sediment load at mouth of river to estimate catchment erosion.
Scale and resolution are very important for dissertation research as they help monitor the environment
via measuring cross sections with stratigraphic logging, this is not trying to control realist but still
interfering. An act of measurement is always considered an act of intervention. There is less control
over variables in final based experiments such as erosion plots, but still want to replicate variability
present in reality. However there are scaling issues strict scaling of materials and forces cannot be
applied. Experiments (laboratory and numerical) are the most extreme form of intervention:

It is forecasted that global paid product placement spending will grow at a compound annual rate of
27.9% in the 2005 2010 period to $7.55 billion, as product placement growth continues to
significantly outpace that of traditional advertising and marketing. The overall value of the worldwide
product placement market, including the barter/exposure value of non paid placements, will increase
18.4% compounded annually to $13.96 billion in 2010 (PQ Media, August 2006). It is therefore not
surprising that the concept of product placement is daily discussed, applied, and reported in the world
of professional marketers (Russell and Stern, 2006; O Loughlin, 2006; Levin, 2006; Karrh et al.
2003;).

The Rising Importance of Product Placement in Europe While brand or product placement is
prevalent in the US because of vague or nonexistent regulations, the transition is moving slower in
Europe due to stricter rules governing the use of product placement (PQ Media, 2006). In Europe, The
European Commission is working on the legislation of using product placements for movies or TV
programmes and has set out its plans, in order to update 1989 s Television Without Frontiers Directive,

suffered in a single day during the war. The Chinese managed to inflict heavy casualties on the
attackers, but their defenses were starting to give way under devastating UN firepower. (Thor n.d.)
The attack on Triangle Hill stalled in front of what became to be known as Hill 598 ; as both American
battalions suffered heavy casualties to Chinese grenades. As the late afternoon claimed the attacks of
the US and ROK, they began the preparation of the defensive positions to face the Chinese
counterattack. The PVA 45 Division commander Cui Jiangong attempted a sneak attack with only

Both sides felt the stress of the ongoing conflict. Both Major General Wayne C. Smith and Lieutenant
General Chung Il kwon, commanders of the US 7th Infantry Division and the ROK 2nd Infantry
Division, relieved exhausted battalions daily to maintain troops morale. October 15, General Wayne
Smith ordered the 1st Battalion, of the US 32nd Infantry Regiment and the 2nd Battalion of the US
31st Infantry Regiment, to be placed under the command of Colonel Moses to attack Triangle Hill.
Chung Il kwon replaced the 2nd Battalion of the ROK 32nd Regiment with the 2nd Battalion of the
ROK 17th Regiment. Later that day both of the US battalions captured Hill 598 and Sandy Ridge after
meeting only light resistance, but the Chinese tunnels and a counterattack by the PVA 135th Regiment
prevented the Americans from advancing towards Pike Peak and Jane Russell Hill. The South Koreans
were thrown back and also unable to advance after a Chinese counterattack recaptured Sniper Ridge.
On October 16, Colonel Joseph R. Russ of the US 32nd Infantry Regiment took over the operational
command from Moses. He also received command of the 2nd Battalion of the US 17th Infantry
Regiment to

  • 2. R B Performative Gender Roles Imagine two scenes. The first is set at a club where scantily clad women and men are dancing on stage in which the men are singing about how they cannot control themselves around women, a scene that sexualizes women in terms of a male gaze. The second is at two women s apartments where they fight over a man, only to realize the scenario and throw their mutual boyfriend s stuff out the door. These scenarios show two sides of the contemporary R B scene during the 1990s and 2000s. While one depicts the sexual objectification of women, a topic that most people associate R B with, the latter represents a rise of femininity that hetero normative masculinity suppresses. Contemporary R B is a genre that incorporates the sound of funk, blues, pop, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Black feminism, according to Hartman (2011), is an epistemology that allows for better analyses of women s roles in American society because from the standpoint of black women is a more detailed picture of how race, class, and gender intersect more readily accessible (p. 7). In other words, it argues that social issues are intersectional inextricably bound together. Thus, black feminist thought is applied to black women who have some version of a feminist consciousness. The most prominent example is Erykah Badu. Hartman states, Badu challenges the notion that femininity, sexuality, and womanhood is enacted by a singular method and gives credence to the notion that sexuality is more complex. Her music does not follow the traditional I need a man theme, but instead is about self empowerment and equality, two themes that feminism encompasses. For instance, in her song Bag Lady , Badu (2000) sings, Bag lady you gone hurt your back / Dragging all them bags like that in which she continues and demands for her fans to not fall under the pressure of society s standards because if the conforming continues, it will become a burden and hurt our backs. In the video, Erykah Badu and four other black women, two of which are her mother and sister, are modestly dressed in different colors while set in different environments like a school, a church, and the street. When I talked to you last Sunday, I told you that I want to get engaged to Katie and that we re both eager to get engaged. As far as individually, she said that one of her big problems is that she likes to hold problems in until she blows, and that she s kind of a people pleaser. • 6. Comparing Freshwater vs. Saltwater Fishing Essay Comparative Essay of Freshwater and Saltwater Fishing My friend had invited me along with him and his family to the ocean. It was vacation for the family, but for him and me it was the beginning of a week of serious business. We had an obsessive hobby to pursue. As avid and long term freshwater fisherman, we were thrilled by the thought of catching those large and exotic saltwater fish we had seen on television a billion times before. Yet little did we expect there to be such vast differences between our freshwater fishing and the saltwater fishing, which we were about to pursue. We learned through trial and much error that in order to have a successful saltwater fishing experience we had to make adjustments to all the freshwater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not knowing what to expect, my friend and I had come prepared for about any possible situation. We had brought along about every freshwater fishing rig and tactic from the mid south, despite the insignificant probability that we might ever use some of them. Among these rarely used tactics was that of using steel leaders, lengths of wire that are tied onto the end of the fishing line to ensure that toothy fish don t bite the vulnerable, regular line when they strike the lure. The only time we had ever used this tactic before was when fishing for gar, long and hideous fish that resemble alligators without legs; but sure enough, our exceptional freshwater tactic did work. It spared our lures when fish bit, and we began catching many fish. Throughout the day we enjoyed catching countless fish with our petite, freshwater lures, yet the surrounding fishermen never modified their methods of fishing so they also could experience the same enjoyment. They patiently waited while a rod, as thick as a broomstick and as long as a car, sat in front of them, bobbing with the current. Somewhere out in the ocean was their rig, a huge, crippled baitfish swimming around in little circles, struggling, just calling for some hungry beast to engulf it. Those fishermen never caught much, but when they did it was always a monstrosity, twenty pounds or more. Word had it that just a week earlier a man had even caught a one ... • 7. Essay Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway s tough, terse prose and short, declarative sentences did more to change the style of written English that any other writing in the twentieth century. Ernest Hemingway had many great accomplishments in his historical life but one event sticks out from the rest. The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway s most enduring works. Told in Language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. In May of 1918, Hemingway became an honorary second lieutenant in the Red Cross. He could not join the army due to a defective left eye (resentfully inherited from his mother). On his first day of service across seas, he and other ambulance drivers were assigned the horrific duty of picking up body parts from an exploded munitions factory. Death, mostly of women, on such a scale was most definitely another very shocking moment in Hemingway s young life. But he soon recovered from this experience and became known as the man who was always where the action is. He would often sneak cigarettes and chocolate to soldiers on the Italian front. It was on one of these occasions that he was severely wounded by an Austrian trench mortar. Even with over a hundred pieces of shrapnel and an Austrian machine gun bullet logged in his leg he managed to carry a wounded soldier a hundred yards to safety. He got the Italian Medal of Valor for his courageous action. He spent his recovery time at the Ospedale Croce Rossa Americana, in Milan. This section outlines some of the available methods for designing for inclusivity. Much of the existing research around designing for trust online focuses on increasing users trust. Researchers Riegelsberger, Sasse, and McCarthy (2005) instead decided to design a framework focusing on factors that lead the trusted actor (service provider) to act in a trustworthy manner. The design heuristics include stable identity, traceability/accountability, group membership, group identity, social presence, and recording outcomes. By limiting users to ATB Financial customers, trust is created through stable identity and group ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the most common way to establish trust in the collaborative economy. A complaint of these reputation systems is the accuracy of reviews given and the tendency to only provide extremely satisfied or extremely unsatisfied reviews. Some platforms are aware of this and incorporate mechanisms to encourage accurate, average reviews. For example, Airbnb added a feature in 2014 to reveal host and guest reviews simultaneously to make both parties feel comfortable in leaving honest reviews without the worry of a dishonest retaliatory review. The ATB gig site will not only reveal reviews simultaneously, it will have a template for constructive feedback. The template will ask for a rating and/or review of specific behaviours, such as adhering to the terms of the agreement. Both parties, in advance of the gig, will negotiate the agreement to facilitate clear communication and expectations. Rare and used mostly in online gaming, hybrid trust models use both network structure and interactions to compute trust. In this model, interacting users exchange friend lists that are saved as a friendship graph. The more frequent the interactions and the longer their duration, the higher the trust value. This is an infrequently used trust model. This model may be considered for a future iteration of the site, but only for ATB employees to identify service providers who would be a good fit for a permanent role with ATB. ... • 10. Evaluating The Current Incremental Budgeting System 1.1 Executive Summary This report reviews the company s current incremental budgeting system, explores the beyond budgeting approach and looks at the alternative flexible methods available. In Summary, although the managing director could continue to use the incremental system, it is recommended that an Activity Based Costing strategy is adopted. Although the current incremental method is simple and easy to understand, it has many drawbacks making it unsuitable for today s economic environment. 1.2 Objectives Taking into consideration the current economic climate, to investigate how beneficial a beyond budgeting approach would be, in regards to flexibility and financial control of the business. To also explore the possibility of adopting an Activity Based Costing system and the benefits it would bring to the company. Lastly, after reviewing the benefits and shortcomings of all three methods of budgeting, determine which method is the most suitable for the managing director. 1.3 Background to budgeting The process of budgeting is one of the most important management tools available to a business, particularly in today s current economic climate. It serves three major purposes; coordinating activities and tasks, motivating employees and allows for forecasting of future developments and events in order to prepare for the future of the business effectively (Weber, 2005). 2.1 Incremental Budgeting According to M.M Ibrahim and R.A Proctor (1992), the incremental ... • 11. How An Accelerometer Works, One Must First Understand The... Introduction To understand how an accelerometer works, one must first understand the concept of vibration. One example of vibration is sound. When an object vibrates and creates a disturbance in a medium, it creates a sound wave. The sound wave travels in sinusoidal form with certain frequencies. This affect was observed in this experiment with a guitar string, a motor, and a cell phone. The vibration of these systems can be measured with an accelerometer. The accelerometer converts mechanical acceleration to an electric signal. To record the data measured by the accelerometer, the DAQ system LabVIEW was used. LabVIEW collected the time and frequency data from the plucked guitar string. An important aspect of the DAQ system is the sample rate, or the number of measurements it can make in a certain amount of time. It is an important parameter because without a high enough sample rate, highly dynamic behavior may not be recorded. Another problem with using an insufficient sampling rate is aliasing which is the misinterpretation of high frequency signals as lower frequency components. To prevent this, the sample frequency must be twice the highest frequency. Any signal in the system that is above the Nyquist frequency, which is half the sampling frequency, is subject to aliasing, or false frequency measurement. This means that the data is only reliable up to half of the sampling frequency. However, a sample rate that is too high leads to difficult data processing and noise ... • 12. Legally Blonde Was Released, Telling The Story Of Elle Woods Fourteen years ago, the romantic comedy Legally Blonde was released, telling the story of Elle Woods, a ditzy sorority girl who follows her ex boyfriend, Warner, to Harvard Law School in hopes of proving to him that she is not just another dumb blonde and winning him back. Elle studies hard, forgets about Warner, and ends up graduating as valedictorian with job offers from multiple prestigious law firms. While making audiences laugh, the movie also inspired those who were undervalued and doubted by others to go to college, with the message that if they studied and worked hard enough, anything is possible. However, regardless of work ethic and intelligence, this aspiration is impossible for most. Even if one is accepted into their dream university, there is still the underlying issue of how they will pay for their education. For many, college is an important step in achieving success, but paying for a high quality college education is impossible. Even for those who find a way to pay, their chances of success are sabotaged by the price of their degree, despite the importance of a college education. Although in the twenty first century there is significant emphasis on the necessity of a college degree, qualified students are prevented from reaching their full potential because of the rising cost of a college education. College prices are rapidly rising; public four year college tuitions are rising at an average of 5.6% every year, while public two year college tuitions are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Life And Work Of Roger Corman How I Made A Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime completely changes how people view the industry of filmmaking, by providing the story of one man who battled against the odds and inspired generations to come. The novel chronicles the life and work of Roger Corman, a pioneer in the filmmaking industry. Filmmaking is a visual literature; just like how novels can change a person s beliefs or perspectives, film can have a long lasting effect on the audience it touches. Similarly, this is what Roger Corman accomplished with his movies. Although he initially had a little money, experience, and support, Roger Corman s life has inspired and challenged generations of people. Furthermore, this book proves Gregory Currie s belief that Great Literature Makes Us Better by acting as a particularly apt teacher of moral[s] through widespread inspiration (Currie). The basis behind Currie s argument is that many people enjoy the hard won pleasures of literature... [and] reap aesthetic rewards from their reading (Currie). In this case, Currie s proposition can be directly supported by the lessons and values rewards imparted on the audience through the description of Roger Corman s life. Although Corman had little to no money, he continued to pursue his dream of filmmaking. The book begins by describing Corman s life preceding his filmmaking career. • 16. Transition from Elementary to Middle School Essay Children confront many transitions throughout their lifetime that can be stressful. They face their first transition from home to school, elementary to middle school, middle to high school, and high school to college or work (Schumacher, 1998). However, the transition from elementary to middle school seems to be harder for adolescents due to the personal changes of puberty. Research suggests that roles, expectations, and responsibilities are the primary concerns of students (Akos, 2002). In order to make this transition easier, programs such as blocking, shadowing, or buddies need to be implemented the year preceding middle school and continue through the first year of transition. The transition from elementary to middle school is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another major concern is personal safety. Students worry about aggressive and violent behaviors of other students (Schumacher, 1998). It is not easy to focus on learning when fear controls your emotions (Ferguson, Bulach, 1994). Transition programs need to teach children conflict skills they can use when they are being teased or victimized (Kingery, Erdley, 2007). Preventive programming is needed to assist students that will be making the change to a new school (Akos, 2002). The best programs are the ones custom made to suit each district (Dillon, 2008). Three transition programs that are being used by some districts are shadowing, blocking, and buddies. The shadowing program begins for students the year prior to middle school. Students from the middle school visit the elementary classes for fifteen or twenty minutes to answer questions. • 17. Perceiving Dogs Equal Vs. Property Perceiving Dogs Equal vs. Property In general, dogs are associated with loyalty, companionship, and aid. In Pam Houston s A Blizzard Under Blue Sky, the narrator attempts to treat her depression through experiencing the adventure of spending a night outside in the cold weather of Utah. Then, the narrator becomes successful in her adventure with the support and assistance of her two dogs, Hailey and Jackson. On the contrary, in Jack London s To Build a Fire, a man is traveling along the Yukon Trail, on his way to his group of friends where he encounters a dog who grows to have a poor relationship with the man but remains with him until his death. The similarities and differences between the two relationships make a comment on interactions between humans and animals. The comparison of these two short stories demonstrates how dogs are only beneficial to humans when they are deemed an equal and a counterpart, however not as valuable when disrespected through regard as one s property. The narrator of A Blizzard Under Blue Sky exemplifies the components of a relationship between a dog and an individual that produces mutual benefit. The essential piece is equality, which is expressed in both the actions the narrator takes toward the dogs as well as the dialogue between the three characters: Jackson, Hailey, and the narrator. The existence of dialogue between them alone reveals equality because dialogue in general is exclusive between two human characters but in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sexual assault is the most under reported violent crime in the United States. In 2005, the Armed Forces received 2,374 reports of alleged cases of sexual assault involving its members. Of these figures, the Air Force received 584 reports. That is an increase of 28 percent over the past year (DoD, 2005). The Air Force is concerned with the safety, dignity, and well being of all its members. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Air Force is focusing on eliminating those barriers by providing both unrestricted and restricted reporting. Unrestricted reporting is recommended for victims of sexual assault who desire medical treatment, counseling, and an official investigation of the crime. Since June 2005, military victims of sexual assault have been offered a restricted reporting option, which allows those who have been sexually assaulted to receive medical treatment and support without automatically triggering a criminal investigation. In an effort to ensure victims receive consistency in support services provided, the Air Force has instituted essential training tasks for first response groups, such as medical personnel, law enforcement and chaplains. Furthermore, the Air Force has trained 201 permanent Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC) to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Offenders can only be held accountable for their actions if the victim reports the crime as unrestricted. According to a 2000 Criminal Victimization Survey, only 16% of reported rapes result in prison sentences. Furthermore, the closer the relationship between the victim and the offender the greater the likelihood that law enforcement will not be told about the sexual assault. • 19. Utilising A Wide Range Of Sources Critically Evaluate And... Utilising a wide range of sources critically evaluate and discuss the following statement: Dangerousness is said to be socially constructed. Dangerousness is a term that is used in various settings such as legal, academic, administrative and popular discourse (Bennett, n.d:3.). The meaning of the term can vary throughout the different settings (ibid). In criminology the term often corresponds with acts of violence, and is used to label an offenders potential level of risk of harm they may cause (Farrington and Tarling, 1985:175). Someone who is labelled as dangerous is thought to pose as a threat or risk to society. However, dangerousness is not easily defined; it can actually cover a range of factors; which makes it more of an umbrella term. For example, three distinct constructs such as risk factors, potential harm, and risk level are used to determine dangerousness (Greene and Wrightsman, 2007:263). Nevertheless, even though the term lacks a clear and concise definition, it is used on a daily basis to make very important decisions regarding offenders who have been previously convicted of a specified offence such as, a violent offence, or a sexual offence (Legislation.gov.uk, 2003). Society is becoming increasingly obsessed with danger or risks to health and safety, and anxiety and fear are becoming a more dominated feature in everyday life (Furedi, 2007:198). It is thought that dangerousness is a product of societal construction, this essay will assess how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Phillips also mentions that Frederick Douglass originates from a state (Maryland) where the conditions for a slave were less harsh than the other states in the Deep South. Where one can only imagine the horrors that surrounded the slaves in those states. Wendell Phillips also praises his book and is also confident that whoever reads his book will be persuaded towards the cause of anti slavery and that since Frederick Douglass is a marvelous and persuasive speaker, his book will also consist of the same elements. Finally, he mentions to his friend about how he wrote his own name and his masters names clearly in his narrative, making it dangerous upon himself. Phillips also relates this choice towards the founding fathers when they wrote their names on the Declaration of Independence. A scientific method is a method of investigation where a problem is first identified and observations, experiments or other relevant data/findings are then used to construct or test hypotheses that serve to solve it (https://www.collinsdictionary.com). Originally the scientific method was actually called the experimental method and the method of science. When the word scientific was come up with in the 19th century, the most widespread term applied to the method became known as the scientific method (scientificmethod.com). One difference between specific science and pseudoscience is how they start. Specific science involves careful observation and experimentation to establish or deny a hypothesis. Evidence against a theory and law are searched for and studies closely on the other hand pseudoscience starts with a hypothesis and looks only for evidence to support it, there is little or no experimentation. Evidence against the hypothesis is hidden, excused or ignored. The original hypothesis is never abandoned (http://physics.weber.edu). An exampleof pseudoscience is ufology. This is the study of records, reports, physical evidence and other circumstances relating the UFO s. An example of specific science is evolution. As a cultural icon, the MRI symbolizes both the progress of medicine as well as a powerful technology to reveal details about one s medical condition. The chapter starts with the a story to demonstrate how a person s life may revolve around the MRI. Getting an MRI is like opening the box of Schrodinger s cat. Although MRI s are great at helping doctors, patients also benefit from seeing visual proof of a condition. Joyce writes about our growing trend towards visualization and how everyone is accustomed to cameras and computers. Even in the operating room visual technology is used as both surveillance and an aid. In addition to helping doctor, Joyce also brings up the point on how an MRI illuminates a doctor s fear of litigation. Lawsuits are common to medical practices and the fear of litigation is always present. The cultural trend of scepticism and the need to cover your ass makes the use of MRIs much more common. Beautiful, flashy images are everywhere in the media, and all of them serve the same purpose. The purpose of all of these images is to get you, the consumer to buy the product that is being sold, or at least buy into the idea that a particular product represents. The role of the visual in modern architecture is very much the same. The purpose of the visual in modern architecture is to publicize or privatize a building through any media necessary to create the desired representation, and thereby sell the idea. The few original pictures that Corbusier took of this building are what actually put Villa Savoye on the map as an architectural achievement. The images speak of movement, seen in the ramp. They demonstrate the progression one would take from the ground to the roof, and from there to the vast expanse beyond. They also speak of the temporality of the building, as if it just happened to be there when Corbusier was walking by and decided to take this picture. There is also an inherent lack of privacy common to all of the images. It is as if the whole world can look inside of the building and see what the occupants are doing, which is precisely what Corbusier wanted. Thus he took them and published the images, which were then distributed all around the world. He also mad a movie of the building called L Architecture d aujour hui (1929), which demonstrated his voyeuristic approach to how architecture should be seen. Villa Savoye, for example, is an apparatus (like a cinema) that privileges the eye over the body, movement over stasis, and fragmentation over unity. Every window is a lens, a purely visual opening; circulation is a poetic event of movement, orchestrated by ramps and spiral stairways; the house acts as a dynamic and shifting catalyst to experience, not as a static and finite center of experience. Publishing these images, and the making of the movie ended up making Villa Savoye possibly the most public building of the time, and one of the most popular buildings ... All that was running through my mind was Does it bother you that you are so obnoxious? But of course I did not actually vocalize this thought. I simply kept playing volleyball. But soon after I questioned myself, Does it bother me? Should it bother me? I went home that day and took a long look in the mirror. Then it hit me, I was whiter than most people were. Sure, I ve heard plenty of people say, You need more color and I m going to call you Casper. However, this one stranger s comment made me wonder. I began to overthink and shortly after my self esteem dropped. I would look in the mirror and think that maybe if I was tan I would be prettier. I thought that maybe if I was tanner I would not be judged by people, including family and friends. Then, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. A Cultural Problem, an Economic Crisis In the past two years, Western society has experienced what many of its leaders have called the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. At the very least, it has been the worst period of instability that our younger generations have ever seen in their lifetimes. But unlike other financial crises that have largely been triggered by external forces, such as the oil embargoes of the 1970 s, this latest one was a product of our own internal policies and practices; even more so, of our cultural outlooks on the very notion of finance, credit, and debt itself. Specifically, the financial crisis that has just come to pass was the result of the new culture of neo liberalism and the hyper individuality and debt based consumption that it ... With the shift in the modes and local of production that neo liberal globalization however, the current generations cannot form such attachment or association. As Barry puts it, the new flexible form of capitalism has transformed the work experience and as a result people can t identify themselves with a particular labour or with a single employer . So then, if someone of the current generation, by virtue of the neo liberal system into which they have been born, cannot form a profession identity like their fathers or grandfathers had, what does that leave? Smart points out that, without the confidence or security that employment held before modern global neo liberalism, people have increasingly formed their identities around their time off the clock. Personal and cultural identities have formed, indeed entire sub cultures of society have formed around the activities that people choose to participate in when they are not working. Consumption of the goods that are produced by overseas markets has thus become the new economic culture of Western society, so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Victimless Crimes Essay Victimless crime is defined as a violation of community standards or an illicit act against a government policy or agency (Wisegeek, 2009) yet, which neither directly harms nor violates the rights of any specific person, although some people may claim it harms society as a whole. Many people consider such acts as drunk driving, prostitution, public drunkenness, assisting someone to die at his or her request, using drugs, white collar crimes, and abortion to be victimless crimes. The only times that you really hear about tax evasion is when it includes big movies stars or government officials. Hysteria among the public concerning UFO sightings prompted the creation of the project by the United States Air Force. • 42. Disadvantages Of Censorship In Movies Censorship is the suppression or prohibition of movies. Censorship is used in many things as Music, the news and all sorts of public places. But the main one censorship in movies. Movies are censored because the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) doesn t want people to know or see Inappropriate content. The Government also decides what gets censored because they wanna make sure that people don t see very inappropriate content. On the News, the Government also censors so people don t see very violent wars or videos. There are many benefits of censorship. One of them is that kids are able to go to a movie theater and know that it is appropriate for them to see. Also, adults know when they are seeing a kids movie or a movie more for their age. The drawbacks to censorship are that censorship is determined by an organization so if they make a mistake it wouldn t be good for a kid to go to the movie theater. Censorship is acceptable because nobody wants to see very inappropriate content in a movie. Parents rely on censorship of movies so they know if their children can watch the movie. An example of this is if a parent wants to take their kids to a movie and there was no censorship how would the parent know if there are sex scenes or war scenes that would be inappropriate for kids to watch. Another example would be adults went to go and see a movie and it was for kids. Without censorship, people cannot safely go to movies. The MPAA rating system has helped parents and ... The ambassador believes that this criticism of the government is why Ai is exalted as being such an important artist. In that same interview, Liu Xiaoming called Weiwei a, so called artist, who is only famous because he is, critical to the Chinese government. Furthermore, many would argue that Weiwei is only famous because of the provocation of his work. There are many other artists in China, many of whom directly criticize the Chinese government, according to the New Yorker. Weiwei could also be seen as being subversive to his own government, in a negative way. His tactics tend to be vulgar, and do receive attention, however, the attention received tends to be around the works themselves, not the meaning behind them. Rather than actually being critical to the government, Weiwei s work is easily viewed based in interest and shock value, more than the actual message of rebelliousness.
