Star Trek Racism

Star Trek and Racism
Star Trek is one of the most successful and lasting entertainment franchises of all time. While it
takes place in a futuristic society, the series explores issues that were widespread in the time of it s
making. This includes one of the most prevalent issues of our time: racism. Thanks to the, at the
time, radical philosophy of Gene Roddenberry, the show attracted a large audience. The
adventurous and utopian society made many people hope for a future where prejudice was a thing
of the past, and anyone could boldly go where no man has gone before. After making such a lasting
stamp on society, I am interested in learning how the Star Trekseries allowed viewers to learn and
accept the truth of uncomfortable social and personal matters within our society. In the 1960 s, the
Civil Rights Movement in the United States had finally gained ground and much progress had
been made. However, segregation was still very prevalent in society. In an era when racism was
extensive, Star Trek featured a racially diverse crew; this included Lieutenant Uhura, an African
American woman in charge of Communications and Lieutenant Sulu an Asian helmsman. This
revolutionary decision practically guaranteed that Star Trek would have a long lasting impression
on viewers.
It is interesting to note that in Critical Theory Today by Lois Tyson, it says The virtual exclusion of
African American history and culture from American education, which began

Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurson Analysis
In 1791 Thomas Paine wrote the book Rights of Man in which Paine illustrates his thoughts on
the unity of the American people. Walter Russell, however, says America has always been a
division of man. There has always been the conqueror and conquered the master and slave the
ruler and the ruled the oppressor and the oppressed. There has never been content nor unity.
There has been only discontent and disunity . While in the United States there are people similar
to Thomas, who believe and strive for freedom and diversity, there are also those who Walter
Russell illustrates that promote racism, violence, and disunity. I mostly disagree with Thomas
Paine because, while there are times of peace; justice; and concord, there are far greater
instances of oppression, privilege, and riots. Two examples of oppression in the America come
from the book Their Eyes Were Watching God written by Zora Neale Hurston. Janie, a black
woman living in the post civil war South, is oppressed by her husband, Logan Killicks, when he
yells at her, Ah ll take holt uh dat ax and come in dere and kill yuh! You better dry up in dere! Ah
m too honest and hard workin for anybody in yo family, dat s de reason you don t want me! (38).
Logan disrespects his wife and puts her below him by saying he is more honest and diligent than
her and her family, showing oppression in the America on a personal level with husband and wife.
An example of oppression on a more communal level is with Jody, the mayor

Modern Dance Is Never Static Essay
Dance is never static.
Even if it has specific sub genres with set guidelines and expected characteristics like other forms
of visual and performing arts, dancers have the will to choose not follow them as often and as
strictly if they please. They re allowed the freedom of expression as well as the freedom to even
create new forms of dance.
In fact, this freedom to create is why modern dance came to be. It decided to stem off of classical
ballet then completely break off from its roots and become its own sub genre over the course of
decades. Modern has many similarities to ballet, such as how turns are conducted or how arm
strength is utilized, but they are considered to be enemies by dancers.
I would like to explain more about how these two opponents (modern and ballet) are rather more
like sisters, as well as how modern dance has evolved in the past century and how this change
threatens traditional modern form. I will go into the origins of modern dance and what cultural
phenomenons it is derived from. Furthermore, I would like to debunk its stereotypes and clarify just
what modern dance is.
Modern dance s enemy ballet establishes visual and physical restrictions on day one of class.
Dancers have specific positions of the feet, arms, and hands to follow and hold. They must have
pointed feet when turning or on relevГ© (pushing your weight onto the balls of your feet to lift
yourself), have his or her thumb placed against your palm for the sake of pretty lines (aesthetic is

Reflective Essay On Pursuing A Nursing Degree
My journey towards nursing started 10 years ago but my passion for nursing started long before
that. My mother was unmarried and pledged by Lupus my whole life I was her primary
caretaker. As a child I was raising myself and I was unaware of the effects of this until my later
years in school. I was told at a young age that I have dyslexia but it went untreated tell I was in
high school. After a lot of hard work with tutors and wonderful understanding teachers I was
making great strides. I managed to graduate early so I can get a full time job and support my
mom who was dying. I had a great passion and interest in taking care of people, which seemed to
come naturally to me. As an adult I did not have the financial means to attend a nursing... Show

A few months into the LVN program I was faced with the devastation of my mother passed away.
As I was grieving my mothers death I became sick myself and was diagnosed with Lupus. This
was seriously the worst six months of my life. I was physically and emotionally falling apart and
the only thing that kept me going was my goal of graduating this program. Six months into my
illness I found out I was pregnant with my youngest child. This miraculously sent me into
remission and I spent the next six years very healthy with minimal effects of my Lupus. I have
been working as a LVN for 10 years now. I have a wide verity of experience witch included
hospitals, clinics, corrections and my absolute favorite psychiatric nursing. I have been living
my life between kids and family and jobs I was never able to fully commit to a nursing program

During this time I made a commitment to my family and my late mother that I was not going to

The Effect Of Benzyl Group Of Tus Strengthened The...
The 1H NMR titration experiment revealed that the benzyl group of TUs strengthened the
intermolecular interactions toward an organophosphonate (Figure 3). It has been known that the
chemical shift of thiourea N H changes according to the degree of hydrogen bond with an acceptor
(i.e., DMMP), and its association constant (Ka) can be obtained by non linear regression analysis
(Figure 3a).18 The 1H NMR spectra of TU 1, 2, 4, or 8 in chloroform d (~100 mM) indicate that
the chemical shift of the N H protons shifted downfield with increasing amount of DMMP up to 80
equivalents, confirming the formation of the TU DMMP complex through hydrogen bonding
(Figure 3b). In the 1H NMR titration experiment, proton peak shifting shows deferent shapes...

To support this hypothesis, the TU s chemical shift changes were measured by varying its
concentration in chloroform d (the Supporting Information). Indeed, the presence of a N phenyl
group induced self aggregation to a greater extent; the degree of peak shifts (self aggregation)
appeared in the order of TU 8 1 4 2, corresponding to the hydrogen bond donor strength. Thus we
may conclude that the incorporation of a phenyl group render a TU more acidic or strong in
hydrogen bond and also promotes more self aggregation. Figure 3. Calculated structure between 4
and DMMP by hydrogen bonding and CH ПЂ interaction.
Although the decreased interaction of TUs 1 and 8 with DMMP than TUs 2 and 4, respectively,
can be explained by the phenyl s adverse effect, it is still not clear why N benzyl substituted TU 4
is better than unsubstituted TU 2 (or TU 8 better than TU 1). Since a N benzyl substituted TU has a
similar donor strength as that of N alkyl substituted TU, we suspect that a secondary interaction
may exist between TU 4 DMMP in order to have a larger association constant. To gain further
insight into the binding mechanism between N benzyl substituted TU 4 and DMMP, density
functional theory (DFT) calculation was performed using B3LYP functional with empirical
dispersion of Grimme (B3LYP D3BJ) and d3 basis set employing the Gaussian0920 suite of
programs. As shown in Figure 4, the DFT calculation revealed the possible existence of CH ПЂ

Bend It Like Beckham Feminism Essay
In the movie Bend it Like Beckham, Jess Bhamra, the main protagonist, is an 18 year old Indian
girl whose families religion is Sikh. Based on her family s strict religious beliefs they do not
accept her decision to play soccer because they believe a woman should not be playing a such a
masculine sport; they are also against her wearing short shorts, revealing her legs to the world.
Traditionally, society solely praises men for their athletic abilities and abilities to entertain the
public, but this aspect is not merely exclusive to men. As women s sports continue to grow in
popularity around the world, they are becoming accepted more as athletes in society. However, they

Afterwards, you see them smiling and back to displaying their feminine qualities after the game.
One progressive element the film addresses is homosexuality, however, the film fails to
elaborate on the issue of the acceptance of homosexuality.Viewers are able to see the negative
connotations attached to homosexuality within the film. The film portrays one of Jess male
friends, Tony, as an individual who experiences society s homophobic ideologies. Tony must
keep his sexuality a secret as a result of these ideologies. The fallacy in the film s progressive
intentions is Tony s sexuality never being elaborated on, where promotion of his sexuality would
build credibility on the film s progressiveness claim. Tony s homosexuality is introduced to
viewers, but acceptance of his sexuality is not suggested as morally right. The film conveys a
passive attitude towards addressing the norms associated with homosexuality and how it directly
relates to contemporary society. Tony is given a minor role in relation to Jess, which undermines
his autonomy as a homosexual. If the film promoted Tony s gayness, then the claim of the movie
being progressive would be reinforced because, given the time period of the early 2000s, this
would suggest the movie is ahead of it s time; homosexuality was considered taboo during the given
the time, but the film showed nothing about what happens to Tony regarding whether or not he

Abstract
Egypt is a North African country. Civilization of Egypt is amongst the oldest known civilizations
of the world. Term Egypt has a Greek origin which means House of the Spirit of Ptah . Ptah was
the earliest God of this land. Egypt is also known as Kemet which means Dark Land . This name
is given to Egypt because of the dark soil that exists along the banks of Nile River. Misr was the
name which was given to it later. The civilization of Ancient Egyptis divided into three periods
based on the peaks of civilization. The first one of them was the Old Kingdom which is the subject
of this research study.
Introduction
The period of third millennium BC is known as the Old Kingdom in Kemetic. Egypt attained its
first peak of civilization during this period. There are three identifiable kingdom periods in
Egypt. They are Old Kingdom , Middle Kingdom , and New Kingdom . Each of these kingdoms
represent a high point of civilization along lower Nile Valley. Eighteenth century historians were
the pioneers who used this term for the first time. According to the Ancient Egyptians, the
distinction between the early dynastic period and the Old Kingdom cannot be recognized. It is
also because of the fact the first two kings of the Old Kingdom were related the last dynastic
kingdom. Ineb Hedg was the Royal capital in

Peace As A Concept Of The Fundamental Problems Faced By...
Peace as a concept is seen through the lens of the fundamental problems faced by the world today:
war, armed conflict and political violence. By insinuation, peace itself is understood predominantly
as a negative concept, or as the absence of these phenomena (Atack, 2009).
Martin Luther King said that True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force tension,
confusion or war; it is the presence of some positive force justice, good will and brotherhood
(King, 1957). Indeed, peace should focus on the positive social and political phenomena such as
integrity, equality and wellbeing. In order to create a peaceful world, humans have to strive for
positive peace, a condition brought about by establishing standards of justice, human rights, and
sustainable development in beloved communities (Harris, 1996, p. 386). Gandhiji too described his
ideas of peace with a focus on the positive, according to him peace includes:
(i) Peace implies the capacity to live together in harmony.
(ii) The creation of non violent social systems, i.e., a society free from structural violence.
(iii) The absence of exploitation and injustice of every kind.
(iv) International cooperation and understanding.
(v) Ecological balance and conservation.
(vi) Peace of mind, or the psycho spiritual dimension of peace. (NCERT, 2006)
These positive views of peace lead us beyond the limited negative associations the notion is centered
around. It is important to understand that the concept

The Treaty Of The Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty
The ratification of the Guadalupe hidalgo treaty (1848) led to an enormous increase of land for
United States. Previous disputes that included the desire to annex Texas into Mexico was
ultimately resolved through the passing of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty of 1848. Remuneration
was requested from the republic of Mexicowhich was granted by the U.S. This movement allowed
and officially surrendered the land bounded by California and the Rio Granderiver. Although Texas
had been annexed in 1845 to be part of the Union as the 28th state, this led to necessity for
government control that was not easily supplied since Texas was a long distance away.
However, the annexation of Texas increased the area of land owned by the U.S. Now that
America had adopted this great amount of land, the nation had also adopted the natives as new
citizen; nearly 75,000 Mexicans became U.S. citizens. The social adaptation was a difficult task
for them, and many of these Mexican Americans had to deal with Mexican raiders crossing the
border. Raids often led to the devastation of many local towns. There was a solution to this
predicament, and that is where the Texas Rangers came into play. Twenty seven years later the
novel A Texas Ranger was introduced.
The valiant Texas Rangers were in the beautiful Corpus Christi; they were greeted with the wildest
state of excitement from the local Texans. They were ordered there for the terror that the Mexican
Raiders were causing. They did radical

all aspects of their lives attire, attitudes, character, preparedness, orderliness, work ethic,
creativity, establishment of classroom environment, and interactions with others. Healthy,

verses that come to mind. They are as followed: Ephesians 4:29, Ephesians4:32Colossians3:12

power educators have because they re likeable and know how to cultivate human relationships. It
s earned by being personable and hospitable. What matters most isn t what we say or what we
do, but who we are. Expert power is the second one. Expert power is the power that accurse to
educators because they possess superior knowledge in one or more field. Those who influence
student s behavior by replying on expert are often charcatized as having great enthusiasm for
their subject enthusiasm that s often contagious. Teachers acquire expert power by imbuing a
subject with significance. These teachers power resides not only in expertise but also in others
ability to convey that expertise to others. Reward power is often depends on attractive or expert
power or both. It s the power to give praise or positive feedback that affirms the value of a student

A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time were two very
captivating coming of age novels. Although, while I was reading these novels, I may not have
appreciated them at the time. Now as I am reflecting the themes and lessons that can be learned
from the books, I am noticing just how great these books truly are. Just like all books, these two
books carried important information and experiences that readers can learn from. Even though
these books are both fiction, that does not lessen the importance of the events. The characters in
these books were all so different, but even then, similarities can be listed. Two traits that all the main

Phineas and Gene are best friends at the boarding school they attend. This so called friendship is
put to the test after Phineas breaks his leg after he fell off the same tree that Gene just so happened
to be on at the time. It wasn t so much that they no longer had the same friendship that they did
before the accident, instead other people outside of their friendship started to question everything.
Even though they still considered each other to be best friends, and basically acted the same way,
other people were convinced that Gene made Phineas fall from the tree. This action would be a
demonstration of breaking each other s trust. They remained strong throughout all the accusations
and trusted each nonetheless of other people s judgement. So really, both of these novels perfectly
represented the theme of trust in a way that it is held and broken.
Another important theme worth mentioning that A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the
Dog in the Night time had in common was bravery, or perhaps courage. The novelthat bravery was
expressed the most was A Separate Peace. The setting of the book was during World War II. That

The Real Science behind Energy Drinks
1. When we say that something gives us energy , what does that mean? What is a biological
definition of energy?
When we say that something gives us energy it means we can get sugars or carbohydrates and
lipids from that. Humans need to eat carbohydrates and lipids to provide fuel for our body s
metabolism. Human body must have these chemicals in order to function and different food
sources provide different types of energy. The biological definition of energy is the element that is
stored by cells in biomolecules (carbohydrates and lipids). The energy is released when there

What does Dermer s collection and hobby bring to the United States? It brings an international
perspective and history on kite flying. In India, for example, kite flying is a fierce. It is a
sometimes violent sport. In Thailand, kite battles reflect the war of the sexes between men and
women. Kites were used in World War II. They were used to distract German planes and for target

kites went through quite a developmental phase where they were getting better and better as new
lighter, stronger materials were being developed. Tubular fiberglass became obsolete when tubular

Analysis Of Vimy Ridge
The first photo in this image was taken between 1900 1919, when women were required to wear
long dresses and shirts to cover up their body because it was not acceptable for women to show
their legs. Then in the 1920s women began wearing knee length skirts because they felt they
shouldn t be shamed for their bodies along with the necessary need to save material so the skirts
were made shorter. Many women greeted this new look with pleasure and saw it as more practical
and better suited to a time when women were entering the workforce. Women started fighting for
their rights which they deserved in 1924 with protests by many women who felt the shorter skirts
were more youthful and modern. Vimy Ridge is a very significant battle as it is marked

Parent s Relationship With Physical Abuse
Apart from that, parents personality and some additional objective factors have a noticeable
relationship with physical abuse rate as well. Young parenthood with inadequate parental
functioning, lack of self control and low self esteem are prevalent characteristics among those
perpetrators. Gil (1970) (cited in Zigler Hall, 1989) found that under 10% of reported abusive
parents were under the age of 20 and almost 50% were from 20 to 30 years of age. Furthermore,
single mothers tend to resort to violence more frequently than their counterparts. For instance, in
Argentina and the U.S, cruel punishment is 3 times more conceivable to be administered by single
mothers (WHO, 2002). Additionally, not only is low education another factor, but also

Passover Tradition
Using Christ s last Passover meal, where He introduced the first instance of what is now the Lord
s Supper, as an example, we see that since AD 30 it has continued to evolve into a tradition that no
longer closely resembles the original one of 1446 B.C. Today, the holiday is becoming even more
individualistic, while still holding traditional values. Likewise, the Christian Communion has
changed considerably. For years it was observed, like the one in the Upper Room following Jesus
resurrection. Then when the Church began to move out of people s homes and into buildings, the
meal was discontinued. Today, in some Christian faiths, there is tremendous ritual and rules. In
others, it is very informal. Communion elements in prepackaged individually... Show more content

Quite often the only aspect of the ritual that resembles the first is the quoting of the Scripture. Yet,
that is rather remarkable considering the historical timeline of the Christian faith through centuries
of changes.
The exegesis of this passage brings to light many important principles. First, the tradition of
Passover is nearly 3500 years old. Through devout practitioners, certain elements of the tradition
have continued against all odds, especially the recounting of historic events and the focus on hope
and thanksgiving. Second, the tradition of remembering Jesus sacrifice on the cross through
thanksgiving, breaking bread and drinking of the cup has continued for over 2000 years. Readings
from Scripture, whether from Matthew, Mark, Luke, John or 1 Corinthians, keeps the tradition
alive. It is a reminder of deliverance from sin and death and the promise of eternal salvation. Third,
it is suggested that Jesus will at some point again eat of the Passover meal, although it is uncertain
if that is literal, figurative or both. This speaks to the Jewish Christian that the Passover observance
is not to be discontinued. Fourth, it begs the question: Were the

We Re Hot as Hell
We re Hot as Hell
Is global warming a moral dilemma? Is it the public policy problem from hell? In The
Environmental Issue from Hell, Bill McKibben uses many of such phrases en route to arguing for
a new approach to global warming. By discussing hell and morals, the reader s mind is already
equating it with two heavily debated issues. Therefore, we begin to question their existence and
how we should deal with the subjects. McKibben wisely chooses these disputes to represent his
main concerns: the ways in which consumerism affects the global ecosystem, and the impact of
humans on the environment. McKibben presents a solution on how to handle each of these
environmental issues, utilizing both the people and the government.

Mckibben inaugurates his third paragraph suggesting that we make the environmental issues, the
great moral crisis of our time, and the equivalent of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. (747).
He uses this analogy to explain that in his opinion, we are strip mining the present and destroying
all of whom come after it. Thus, leading him to discuss exactly how humans materialistic ways
have impacted the earth. From Bangladesh living three months in thigh high deep water, to polar
bears becoming 20% scrawnier than they were a decade ago (748). The environmentalist writer
goes on to discuss how to deal with global warming since it is indeed creeping up on us.
Mckibben once again articulates his repetitive view that, it s a moral question, finally, if you
think we owe any debt to the future. (748). In many circumstances it is believed that if it had
been done to us, we would dislike the generation that did it, just as how we will one day be
disliked. The solution given in the essay on how to handle these environmental issues is to start a
moral campaign. In other words, ... turn it into a political issue, just as bus boycotts began to make
public the issue of race, forcing the system to respond. (748). As a part of the overall populist
causing these issues, Mckibben understands that the hardest part about starting this moral campaign
is identifying a villain to overcome. Briefly

Summary Of The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
Bradbury s Words to You
Desmond Tutu, a South African leader once said, You do not choose your family. They are God
s gift to you, as you are to them. In the short story The Veldt , Ray Bradbury conveys the idea that
no material object that has ever been crafted, is more valuable than your family because your
family provides you with vital growth. He does this by telling the tragic tale of parents Lydia and
George who are killed by their spoiled and technology obsessed children, Wendy and Peter.
Through foreshadow, symbolism and imagery, Bradbury believes that kids need to respect their
parents, otherwise there will be grave consequences.
Bradbury uses the term The Happy House in an ironic manner to foreshadow the very unhappy
demise of the Hadley family. The Hadley s home consists of an abundance of high technological
machines to do all the work around the house for them, called the Happylife Home . The
description of the house provides the reader with an understanding that the family is very lazy for
having machines doing all the work for them as they are described as ... the house that bathed and
fed them and was good to them . However, despite the comforts this home brings, the Hadley
parents become more and more worried with the machines throughout the story. The beginning of
the story foreshadows this: George, I wish you d look at the nursery. What s wrong with it? I don t
know. I just want you to look at it, is all, or call a psychologist in to look at it.

Ethics Paper on Facebook Beacon
Abstract Facebook began in February 2004. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his
collegiate comrades at Harvard University. Rapidly expanding, Facebook s exponential growth
led to its membership growing to over one billion users, as of September 2012. One would
imagine that with such growth would come more opportunities for challenges to arise: one of
these challenges being users and their rights to privacy. As part of Facebook s advertising system,
their primary means of generating revenue, Beacon sent data from other companies and websites
to Facebook. Following a lawsuit, Beacon then changed to accommodate these requests. On
December 5, 2007, Facebook declared it would allow users to choose not to participate in Beacon in

With a plethora of free social media sites available to the public, Facebook would risk losing a
vast amount of membership and, thus, lose money. The second option Facebook had was to
completely get rid of the Beacon feature. If they chose this option, they would likely have to find
a new way to compensate for the revenue that would be lost by doing so. Remember, the main
way Facebook was able to keep its services free to users, was to generate revenue through
advertisements. In deleting the Beacon feature, Facebook would have to charge on one end:
through users or advertisers. Either way, it would be a large amount of revenue that would have
to be compensated for in the short time it would take to get rid of the Beacon feature. The last
choice Facebook had would be to modify the Beacon feature to accommodate the requests of
those who felt it violated their privacy. Doing so would be an attempt to balance the needs of the
Facebook Company as well as the users who felt they needed a greater sense of privacy when
dealing with the Beacon feature. Appropriate StandardsIf the Facebook Company was to use the
various ethical approaches to determine which option was best in determining how to solve their
issue, one option would prove most logical. Under the utilitarian approach, choosing to keep the

Employment growth will be fastest in retail optical stores and out patient clinics. Employment of
optometrists would grow more rapidly were it not for anticipated productivity gains that will allow
each optometrist to see more patients. These gains will result from greater use of optometry
assistants and other support personnel, and the introduction of new equipment and procedures. New
surgical procedures using lasers are available that can correct some vision problems, but they
remain expensive. In addition to growth, the need to re lace optometrists who leave the occupation
will create employment opportunities. Relatively few opportunities from this source are expected,
however, because most optometrists continue to practice until they retire; few transfer to other
occupations.
Optometrists held about 38,000 jobs in 1998. The number of jobs is greater than the number of
practicing optometrists because some optometrists hold two or more jobs. For example, an
optometrist may have a private practice, but also work in another practice, clinic, or vision care

Effects Of Deforestation On The Amazon Rain Forest
A study by Mongbay shows a loss since 1978 until today of about 79% of forest deforestation.
Decades ago when humans first occupied the earth and began to use fire; deforestation slow began.
History has changed and so has technology and methods. The axe has evolved into a chainsaw
which accelerates the process of deforestation. Chopping down trees has been the human quest for
shelter, food, and warmth. Trees provide humans with wood for shelter. Wood also provides fire
for fuel to keep us warm at night. Lastly trees provide us with human food such as roots, nuts, and

In fact if more trees are cut down, habitat of animals could be destroyed and we could end up with
extinct species as mention before. Not only does this affect the Amazon alone, but it affects the
whole southern part of America. With the reduction of trees the capacity to absorb carbon, modified
water cycles, and soil, deforestation and climate change could cause the Amazon to be replaced with
savannah like vegetation. With a big alternation to the ecosystem like the savannah could distress
Brazil. If the ecosystem is distress this can cause changes in temperature, and rainfall is the increase
like hood with extreme weather events. These events are usually caused by the climate change and
regional deforestation. Events such as droughts and floods are part of the natural rain forest climate
change, but alternation to the climate change can bring severe weather change. This can hold a
negative impact on suburban areas with transportation, agriculture, and businesses going out of
business due to extreme weather events. The climate change is not only important but it can cause
a distress to the Amazon rain forest that deforestation is not an option to continue. The carbon cycle

Your Dependent Variable And For Your Six Independent...
I have data for my dependent variable and for my six independent variables. My dependent
variable is inflation. The inflation data used in this paper comes from EuroStat. Inflation is
calculated as the annual average rate of change (%) in the Harmonized Indices of Consumer
Prices (HICP). The HICP is a consumer price index which has been harmonized across EU
countries, in order to avoid differences in how the price index is calculated. Inflationvaries greatly
across countries and the lowest inflation in this data set is 1.7%, while the highest is 5.5%. My
first independent variable is interest rates and the data also comes from EuroStat. The rates used
in this analysis are part of the interest rate on the main refinancing operations (MRO), which
provides the bulk of liquidity to the banking system. The data encompasses both fixed rate and
minimum bid rate since the ECB dropped the minimum bid rate and decided that the weekly main
refinancing operations would be carried out through a fixed rate tender procedure in 2008. I
hypothesize that the sign of this variable is negative since lower interest rates result in higher
liquidity due to higher borrowing ability and less incentive for savings, boosting consumption and
spending enhanced, which increase demand. The increased aggregate demand increases the price
level, which causes inflation. My second variable is productivity growth. The productivity data
used in this paper is from the OECD database and it is defined as the

What Is Classical And Operant Conditioning
Introduction:
Classical conditioning and operant conditioning are different learning methods.
The two methods have the word conditioning in common. Conditioning is the acquisition of
specific patterns of behavior in the presence of well defined stimuli. Both classical and operant
conditioning are basic forms of learning. Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which an
organism learns to transfer a natural response from one stimulus to another, previously neutral
stimulus. Manipulating reflexes does this. Operant conditioning is a type of learning in which the
likelihood of a behavior is increased or decreased by the use of reinforcement or punishment.
Operant conditioning deals with more cognitive thought process. These two forms of learning have

Classical conditioning:
Secondly, many people used to say that classical conditioning in the classroom are less
important than those of operant conditioning. But still there is a need for teachers to try to make
sure that students associate positive emotional experiences with learning. If a student associates
negative emotional experiences with school then this can obviously have bad results, such as
creating a school phobia. For example, if a student is bullied at school they may learn to
associate school with fear. It could also explain why some students show a particular dislike of
certain subjects that continue throughout their academic career. This could happen if a student
is humiliated or punished in class by a teachers. Moreover classical conditioning is a temporary
learning process where a bell is rang and then the dog is given food and this process is repeated
several times. After a while, the dog learns to assume that a ringing bell means food is coming and
so the dog begins salivating to simply the sound of the bell expecting food. So it means

Analysis Of Charles Berger s Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Charles Berger, a communication theorist coined the term Uncertainty Reduction Theory in 1975.
This theory discusses that when people meet one of their first concerns is to reduce uncertainty
about the other person and the situation. Berger uses eight axioms, verbal communication,
nonverbal warmth, information seeking, self disclosure, reciprocity, similarity, liking, and shared
networks to discuss the connection between these axioms and reducing uncertainty (Griffin, E.,
Ledbetter, A., Sparks G, 2015). Berger and Calabrese s (1975) Uncertainty Reduction Theoryhas
basic assumptions that when strangers meet, their primary concern is one of uncertainty
reduction or increasing predictability about the behavior of both themselves and others in the
interaction (p. 100). A video interview with Charles Berger and Em Griffin discusses
Uncertainty Reduction Theory and what it means to Berger. In the video, Berger states that the
theory deliberates the struggles that people go through in their lives to adjust to the changing
world around them. One of the main struggles people face is that uncertainty is always there,
especially in a new situation. Berger states, if we re going to act in ways that will achieve our
desired goals that is, we ll get what we want we have to be able to anticipate, to be able to predict
what the physical world is going to do and what the people in it are going to do ( A First Look... ,
2015). Because the world is changing and new experiences are

Women in Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire and Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman
The part of Stella and Linda are both archetypal female figures in that they follow the typical
fictional role of the submissive wife and mother. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Stella DuBois
(renamed Mrs.
Stanley Kowalski) supports and forgives her husband, defending him against any criticism.
Likewise, in Death of a Salesman, Linda the only female character with any import is a meek, timid
figure around her husband. This weakness is underscored by the sentence structure and diction that
each character uses when in conflict with their husband. As both Tennessee Williams and Arthur
Miller are men, it can be seen that their female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is possible that many men desire this sort of unconditional support and forgiveness who ever
wants to be blamed for their mistakes and behavior but it is unrealistic to show a woman who
tolerates this action even to the point that they end up hurting their husband, or another character.
Linda s blindness leads indirectly to Willy s suicide, and Stella s unwillingness to open her eyes to
Stanley s actions ends with Blanche being taken away to a mental institution.
Both of these characters also forgive their husbands in spite of their abuse, and back down during
any conflict. Stella in scene 3 is hit by
Stanley; during the poker scene he gives a loud whack of his hand on her thigh. All that Stella does
in reproach is say, That s not fun,
Stanley. During scene 8, Stanley yells at both Stella and Blanche:
What do you two think you are? A pair of queens? Stella s reaction is only to cry weakly , asserting
her inferior position to Stanley.
Linda s problem is verbal abuse. Willy continually yells at her for simply trying to talk: Will you
stop! ; Will you let me talk? ;
Don t take his side all the time, goddammit. When

Narrative Essay On High School
The last bell rang, and all the kids at Southport County High School bombarded the door of the
classroom. It was Friday and all the kids attempted to jam through the door at once. Jane, who sat
at the back of the class, waited quietly for her peers to leave. When all the kids clogging the door
had left, she rose from her desk, told her language teacher, Mrs. Phyllis, Goodbye, and sauntered
into a stream of shouting kids.
Jane was a petite tenth grader. Her hair was naturally brown and her eyes blue, she was quiet,
reserved, and only spoke to her close friends and family. Her mother worked seven days a week at
the local diner, Fry Cakes, and her dad left her mother when Jane was merely a baby. Sometimes
she missed her dad, even though she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, the stirring of one of the people on the ground helped wake her up. Jane started rifling
through the supplies. There were three water bottles and purifying drops. Four sleeping bags,
countless cans of chicken noodle soup and three backpacks with one knife, a rain poncho, jacket,
and freeze dried food packets.
The other teenagers lying on the ground stirred and awoke. The first one to stand was the boy.
He had golden brown hair, it was almost blonde, his eyes were a startling shade of green. His
features were soft and round, like a child s.
Finally, the girl stood, she had long blonde hair and blue eyes. She was also tall and thin. The two
could pass for brother and sister, or at least cousins. They stared, shocked, at Jane and the supplies
that she stood in front of. Hey, Jane said quietly.
So what are we here for? the girl inquired. Jane had figured out that the girl s name was Sammy
and the boy s name was Tom, and they were, in fact, first cousins.
I don t know, Jane replied, this note was the only thing I saw around this mound of supplies.
There s no time for this! We should get out of the clearing, said Tom. it looks like there are some
kind of trees over there, he pointed to the north of the concrete pad, I think our best bet would be
to make a shelter and set up camp there for the

Heart Of Darkness By Joseph Conrad And The Film Apocalypse...
Dark, suspenseful, and altogether brutal is what describes Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
and the film adaption Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola. A short novella published in
1899, Heart of Darkness centers on the journey taken by the narrator Marlow up the Congo River
with a Belgian trading company. Upriver he encounters the mysterious ivory trader, Kurtz and is
brought face to face with corruption and despair. Set in the Vietnam War, the film Apocalypse Now
follows the central character, U.S. Army special operations officer Captain Benjamin L.
Willard, of MACV SOG, on a mission to kill the radical and seemingly psychotic U.S. Army
Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz. Coppola draws on Conrad s characters in order to
create Captain Willard and Colonel Kurtz, but in adapting these dynamic characters he changes
the internal and external forces both main characters endure.Coppola creates interesting parallels
between Willard and Marlow; Marlow s voyage downriver to the heart of Africa and Willard s
mission on the Nung River in Vietnam. Both men are on journey s to the darkest of places:
journey into self , and the discoveries to be made there. Both are about men confronting fears of
failure, insanity, death, and cultural corruption. However, both are also are drastically different at
times. Ronald Bogue s article The Heartless Darkness in Apocalypse Now provides a wonderful
intake on commonalties and differences in the two works. He notes that by

A Critical Review of The Ambiguities of Football, Politics, Culture, and Social Transformation in
Latin America by Tamir Bar On.
Introduction:
In Latin America, soccer is not a game; it is a way of life. It is mixed in with politics and
nationalism. It defines social classes. How politically influential is soccer in Latin America? It is
used by various Latin American socio economic elites in order to retard the acceleration of
working class and popular discontent (Bar On 1997:1.8). Is it then not intriguing that women play
no part in the scheme of things? I can immediately off the top of my head name at least 5 male
professional soccer players... and not a single female player.
Tamir Bar On discusses in detail the influence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Title:
Organisation Man Woman and Organisational Culture by G. Coates
Connection to research problem:
This article is connected to my sociological problem in that it shows that after an extensive
research conducted on 240 (male and female) employees with high management positions, more
than half the women surveyed declared that they would relocate for their career, thus proving
women see work as a central factor in their lives. Of the 240 employees surveyed, only 70 of them
were women, again demonstrating a lack of equality in the work force.

Critical Review of Tamir Bar On s Article:
Thesis Statement:
The author argues that soccer in Latin America tends to have a major influence on politics,
nationalism, and culture and those professionals in the soccer industry should be using that
influence to bring awareness to crucial social and political issues.
Research Method:
Bar On uses secondary analysis as a means of research, that is, he refers to a variety of research
techniques that make use of already existing sources, or publicly accessible

Reflection On Group Presentation
In the group presentation, my group and I presented on the issue of isms. This included focus on
sexism, ageism, and racism. I felt that each person in our group was very diverse and unique which
made our presentation stand out with having a little bit of individuality from each member in the
presentation. Our main goal of communication was to inform the audienceon what exactly each ism
is, discuss where each one is found, and how the are influenced in today s society. From the start of
the grouppresentation process, I found myself being an emergent leader. With a lack of
communication when our group first got together, I felt we were in need of leadership because
it seemed nobody else was going to do anything such as getting each others numbers or creating a
group name, so I decided to take charge the best I could. As time went on our group started to get
our stuff together. With that said if we all began brainstorming and set up some procedural needs
from the start, the group would of been on the same page and maybe some wouldn t have waited
until the last moment. I was thankful for Jonathan for stepping up and helping the group get
started with an outline and focusing on a question of policy along with answering any other
questions that arose during the presentation process. Once the deadline got closer however is
when we communicated the most. Sounds logical but my hope was that we all have most of the
work done prior than the day before it was due so we could

  • 2. Star Trek Racism Natalie Ertz English 2100 Star Trek and Racism Star Trek is one of the most successful and lasting entertainment franchises of all time. While it takes place in a futuristic society, the series explores issues that were widespread in the time of it s making. This includes one of the most prevalent issues of our time: racism. Thanks to the, at the time, radical philosophy of Gene Roddenberry, the show attracted a large audience. The adventurous and utopian society made many people hope for a future where prejudice was a thing of the past, and anyone could boldly go where no man has gone before. After making such a lasting stamp on society, I am interested in learning how the Star Trekseries allowed viewers to learn and accept the truth of uncomfortable social and personal matters within our society. In the 1960 s, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States had finally gained ground and much progress had been made. However, segregation was still very prevalent in society. In an era when racism was extensive, Star Trek featured a racially diverse crew; this included Lieutenant Uhura, an African American woman in charge of Communications and Lieutenant Sulu an Asian helmsman. This revolutionary decision practically guaranteed that Star Trek would have a long lasting impression on viewers. It is interesting to note that in Critical Theory Today by Lois Tyson, it says The virtual exclusion of African American history and culture from American education, which began ... • 3. Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurson Analysis In 1791 Thomas Paine wrote the book Rights of Man in which Paine illustrates his thoughts on the unity of the American people. Walter Russell, however, says America has always been a division of man. There has always been the conqueror and conquered the master and slave the ruler and the ruled the oppressor and the oppressed. There has never been content nor unity. There has been only discontent and disunity . While in the United States there are people similar to Thomas, who believe and strive for freedom and diversity, there are also those who Walter Russell illustrates that promote racism, violence, and disunity. I mostly disagree with Thomas Paine because, while there are times of peace; justice; and concord, there are far greater instances of oppression, privilege, and riots. Two examples of oppression in the America come from the book Their Eyes Were Watching God written by Zora Neale Hurston. Janie, a black woman living in the post civil war South, is oppressed by her husband, Logan Killicks, when he yells at her, Ah ll take holt uh dat ax and come in dere and kill yuh! You better dry up in dere! Ah m too honest and hard workin for anybody in yo family, dat s de reason you don t want me! (38). Logan disrespects his wife and puts her below him by saying he is more honest and diligent than her and her family, showing oppression in the America on a personal level with husband and wife. An example of oppression on a more communal level is with Jody, the mayor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Modern Dance Is Never Static Essay Dance is never static. Even if it has specific sub genres with set guidelines and expected characteristics like other forms of visual and performing arts, dancers have the will to choose not follow them as often and as strictly if they please. They re allowed the freedom of expression as well as the freedom to even create new forms of dance. In fact, this freedom to create is why modern dance came to be. It decided to stem off of classical ballet then completely break off from its roots and become its own sub genre over the course of decades. Modern has many similarities to ballet, such as how turns are conducted or how arm strength is utilized, but they are considered to be enemies by dancers. I would like to explain more about how these two opponents (modern and ballet) are rather more like sisters, as well as how modern dance has evolved in the past century and how this change threatens traditional modern form. I will go into the origins of modern dance and what cultural phenomenons it is derived from. Furthermore, I would like to debunk its stereotypes and clarify just what modern dance is. Modern dance s enemy ballet establishes visual and physical restrictions on day one of class. Dancers have specific positions of the feet, arms, and hands to follow and hold. They must have pointed feet when turning or on relevГ© (pushing your weight onto the balls of your feet to lift yourself), have his or her thumb placed against your palm for the sake of pretty lines (aesthetic is ... My mother was unmarried and pledged by Lupus my whole life I was her primary caretaker. As a child I was raising myself and I was unaware of the effects of this until my later years in school. I was told at a young age that I have dyslexia but it went untreated tell I was in high school. After a lot of hard work with tutors and wonderful understanding teachers I was making great strides. • 6. The Effect Of Benzyl Group Of Tus Strengthened The... The 1H NMR titration experiment revealed that the benzyl group of TUs strengthened the intermolecular interactions toward an organophosphonate (Figure 3). It has been known that the chemical shift of thiourea N H changes according to the degree of hydrogen bond with an acceptor (i.e., DMMP), and its association constant (Ka) can be obtained by non linear regression analysis (Figure 3a).18 The 1H NMR spectra of TU 1, 2, 4, or 8 in chloroform d (~100 mM) indicate that the chemical shift of the N H protons shifted downfield with increasing amount of DMMP up to 80 equivalents, confirming the formation of the TU DMMP complex through hydrogen bonding (Figure 3b). In the 1H NMR titration experiment, proton peak shifting shows deferent shapes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To support this hypothesis, the TU s chemical shift changes were measured by varying its concentration in chloroform d (the Supporting Information). Indeed, the presence of a N phenyl group induced self aggregation to a greater extent; the degree of peak shifts (self aggregation) appeared in the order of TU 8 1 4 2, corresponding to the hydrogen bond donor strength. Thus we may conclude that the incorporation of a phenyl group render a TU more acidic or strong in hydrogen bond and also promotes more self aggregation. Figure 3. Calculated structure between 4 and DMMP by hydrogen bonding and CH ПЂ interaction. Although the decreased interaction of TUs 1 and 8 with DMMP than TUs 2 and 4, respectively, can be explained by the phenyl s adverse effect, it is still not clear why N benzyl substituted TU 4 is better than unsubstituted TU 2 (or TU 8 better than TU 1). Since a N benzyl substituted TU has a similar donor strength as that of N alkyl substituted TU, we suspect that a secondary interaction may exist between TU 4 DMMP in order to have a larger association constant. To gain further insight into the binding mechanism between N benzyl substituted TU 4 and DMMP, density functional theory (DFT) calculation was performed using B3LYP functional with empirical dispersion of Grimme (B3LYP D3BJ) and d3 basis set employing the Gaussian0920 suite of programs. The film portrays one of Jess male friends, Tony, as an individual who experiences society s homophobic ideologies. Tony must keep his sexuality a secret as a result of these ideologies. The fallacy in the film s progressive intentions is Tony s sexuality never being elaborated on, where promotion of his sexuality would build credibility on the film s progressiveness claim. Tony s homosexuality is introduced to viewers, but acceptance of his sexuality is not suggested as morally right. The film conveys a passive attitude towards addressing the norms associated with homosexuality and how it directly relates to contemporary society. Tony is given a minor role in relation to Jess, which undermines his autonomy as a homosexual. If the film promoted Tony s gayness, then the claim of the movie being progressive would be reinforced because, given the time period of the early 2000s, this would suggest the movie is ahead of it s time; homosexuality was considered taboo during the given the time, but the film showed nothing about what happens to Tony regarding whether or not he decided to come ... • 9. Peace As A Concept Of The Fundamental Problems Faced By... Peace as a concept is seen through the lens of the fundamental problems faced by the world today: war, armed conflict and political violence. By insinuation, peace itself is understood predominantly as a negative concept, or as the absence of these phenomena (Atack, 2009). Martin Luther King said that True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force tension, confusion or war; it is the presence of some positive force justice, good will and brotherhood (King, 1957). Indeed, peace should focus on the positive social and political phenomena such as integrity, equality and wellbeing. In order to create a peaceful world, humans have to strive for positive peace, a condition brought about by establishing standards of justice, human rights, and sustainable development in beloved communities (Harris, 1996, p. 386). Gandhiji too described his ideas of peace with a focus on the positive, according to him peace includes: (i) Peace implies the capacity to live together in harmony. (NCERT, 2006) These positive views of peace lead us beyond the limited negative associations the notion is centered around. It is important to understand that the concept ... • 10. The Treaty Of The Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty The ratification of the Guadalupe hidalgo treaty (1848) led to an enormous increase of land for United States. Previous disputes that included the desire to annex Texas into Mexico was ultimately resolved through the passing of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty of 1848. Remuneration was requested from the republic of Mexicowhich was granted by the U.S. This movement allowed and officially surrendered the land bounded by California and the Rio Granderiver. Although Texas had been annexed in 1845 to be part of the Union as the 28th state, this led to necessity for government control that was not easily supplied since Texas was a long distance away. However, the annexation of Texas increased the area of land owned by the U.S. Now that America had adopted this great amount of land, the nation had also adopted the natives as new citizen; nearly 75,000 Mexicans became U.S. citizens. The social adaptation was a difficult task for them, and many of these Mexican Americans had to deal with Mexican raiders crossing the border. Raids often led to the devastation of many local towns. There was a solution to this predicament, and that is where the Texas Rangers came into play. Twenty seven years later the novel A Texas Ranger was introduced. The valiant Texas Rangers were in the beautiful Corpus Christi; they were greeted with the wildest state of excitement from the local Texans. Today, the holiday is becoming even more individualistic, while still holding traditional values. Likewise, the Christian Communion has changed considerably. For years it was observed, like the one in the Upper Room following Jesus resurrection. Then when the Church began to move out of people s homes and into buildings, the meal was discontinued. Yet, that is rather remarkable considering the historical timeline of the Christian faith through centuries of changes. The exegesis of this passage brings to light many important principles. First, the tradition of Passover is nearly 3500 years old. Through devout practitioners, certain elements of the tradition have continued against all odds, especially the recounting of historic events and the focus on hope and thanksgiving. Second, the tradition of remembering Jesus sacrifice on the cross through thanksgiving, breaking bread and drinking of the cup has continued for over 2000 years. Readings from Scripture, whether from Matthew, Mark, Luke, John or 1 Corinthians, keeps the tradition alive. It is a reminder of deliverance from sin and death and the promise of eternal salvation. By discussing hell and morals, the reader s mind is already equating it with two heavily debated issues. Therefore, we begin to question their existence and how we should deal with the subjects. • 30. Summary Of The Veldt By Ray Bradbury Bradbury s Words to You Desmond Tutu, a South African leader once said, You do not choose your family. They are God s gift to you, as you are to them. In the short story The Veldt , Ray Bradbury conveys the idea that no material object that has ever been crafted, is more valuable than your family because your family provides you with vital growth. He does this by telling the tragic tale of parents Lydia and George who are killed by their spoiled and technology obsessed children, Wendy and Peter. Through foreshadow, symbolism and imagery, Bradbury believes that kids need to respect their parents, otherwise there will be grave consequences. Bradbury uses the term The Happy House in an ironic manner to foreshadow the very unhappy demise of the Hadley family. The Hadley s home consists of an abundance of high technological machines to do all the work around the house for them, called the Happylife Home . The description of the house provides the reader with an understanding that the family is very lazy for having machines doing all the work for them as they are described as ... the house that bathed and fed them and was good to them . However, despite the comforts this home brings, the Hadley parents become more and more worried with the machines throughout the story. Rapidly expanding, Facebook s exponential growth led to its membership growing to over one billion users, as of September 2012. The HICP is a consumer price index which has been harmonized across EU countries, in order to avoid differences in how the price index is calculated. The data encompasses both fixed rate and minimum bid rate since the ECB dropped the minimum bid rate and decided that the weekly main refinancing operations would be carried out through a fixed rate tender procedure in 2008. I hypothesize that the sign of this variable is negative since lower interest rates result in higher liquidity due to higher borrowing ability and less incentive for savings, boosting consumption and spending enhanced, which increase demand. The increased aggregate demand increases the price level, which causes inflation. My second variable is productivity growth. • 42. Analysis Of Charles Berger s Uncertainty Reduction Theory Charles Berger, a communication theorist coined the term Uncertainty Reduction Theory in 1975. This theory discusses that when people meet one of their first concerns is to reduce uncertainty about the other person and the situation. Berger uses eight axioms, verbal communication, nonverbal warmth, information seeking, self disclosure, reciprocity, similarity, liking, and shared networks to discuss the connection between these axioms and reducing uncertainty (Griffin, E., Ledbetter, A., Sparks G, 2015). Berger and Calabrese s (1975) Uncertainty Reduction Theoryhas basic assumptions that when strangers meet, their primary concern is one of uncertainty reduction or increasing predictability about the behavior of both themselves and others in the interaction (p. 100). A video interview with Charles Berger and Em Griffin discusses Uncertainty Reduction Theory and what it means to Berger. In the video, Berger states that the theory deliberates the struggles that people go through in their lives to adjust to the changing world around them. One of the main struggles people face is that uncertainty is always there, especially in a new situation. Berger states, if we re going to act in ways that will achieve our desired goals that is, we ll get what we want we have to be able to anticipate, to be able to predict what the physical world is going to do and what the people in it are going to do ( A First Look... , 2015). • 43. Women in Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire and... Women in Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire and Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman The part of Stella and Linda are both archetypal female figures in that they follow the typical fictional role of the submissive wife and mother. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Stella DuBois (renamed Mrs. Stanley Kowalski) supports and forgives her husband, defending him against any criticism. Likewise, in Death of a Salesman, Linda the only female character with any import is a meek, timid figure around her husband. This weakness is underscored by the sentence structure and diction that each character uses when in conflict with their husband. As both Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller are men, it can be seen that their female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is possible that many men desire this sort of unconditional support and forgiveness who ever wants to be blamed for their mistakes and behavior but it is unrealistic to show a woman who tolerates this action even to the point that they end up hurting their husband, or another character. Linda s blindness leads indirectly to Willy s suicide, and Stella s unwillingness to open her eyes to Stanley s actions ends with Blanche being taken away to a mental institution. Both of these characters also forgive their husbands in spite of their abuse, and back down during any conflict. Stella in scene 3 is hit by Stanley; during the poker scene he gives a loud whack of his hand on her thigh. All that Stella does in reproach is say, That s not fun, Stanley. During scene 8, Stanley yells at both Stella and Blanche: What do you two think you are? A pair of queens? Stella s reaction is only to cry weakly , asserting her inferior position to Stanley. Linda s problem is verbal abuse. Willy continually yells at her for simply trying to talk: Will you stop! ; Will you let me talk? ; Don t take his side all the time, goddammit. When ... • 46. Narrative Essay On High School The last bell rang, and all the kids at Southport County High School bombarded the door of the classroom. It was Friday and all the kids attempted to jam through the door at once. Jane, who sat at the back of the class, waited quietly for her peers to leave. When all the kids clogging the door had left, she rose from her desk, told her language teacher, Mrs. Phyllis, Goodbye, and sauntered into a stream of shouting kids. Jane was a petite tenth grader. Her hair was naturally brown and her eyes blue, she was quiet, reserved, and only spoke to her close friends and family. Her mother worked seven days a week at the local diner, Fry Cakes, and her dad left her mother when Jane was merely a baby. Sometimes she missed her dad, even though she ... There were three water bottles and purifying drops. Four sleeping bags, countless cans of chicken noodle soup and three backpacks with one knife, a rain poncho, jacket, and freeze dried food packets. The other teenagers lying on the ground stirred and awoke. The first one to stand was the boy. He had golden brown hair, it was almost blonde, his eyes were a startling shade of green. His features were soft and round, like a child s. Finally, the girl stood, she had long blonde hair and blue eyes. She was also tall and thin. The two could pass for brother and sister, or at least cousins. They stared, shocked, at Jane and the supplies that she stood in front of. Hey, Jane said quietly. So what are we here for? the girl inquired. Jane had figured out that the girl s name was Sammy and the boy s name was Tom, and they were, in fact, first cousins. I don t know, Jane replied, this note was the only thing I saw around this mound of supplies. There s no time for this! We should get out of the clearing, said Tom. it looks like there are some kind of trees over there, he pointed to the north of the concrete pad, I think our best bet would be to make a shelter and set up camp there for the ... • 47. Heart Of Darkness By Joseph Conrad And The Film Apocalypse... Dark, suspenseful, and altogether brutal is what describes Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and the film adaption Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola. A short novella published in 1899, Heart of Darkness centers on the journey taken by the narrator Marlow up the Congo River with a Belgian trading company. Upriver he encounters the mysterious ivory trader, Kurtz and is brought face to face with corruption and despair. Set in the Vietnam War, the film Apocalypse Now follows the central character, U.S. Army special operations officer Captain Benjamin L. Willard, of MACV SOG, on a mission to kill the radical and seemingly psychotic U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz. Coppola draws on Conrad s characters in order to create Captain Willard and Colonel Kurtz, but in adapting these dynamic characters he changes the internal and external forces both main characters endure.Coppola creates interesting parallels between Willard and Marlow; Marlow s voyage downriver to the heart of Africa and Willard s mission on the Nung River in Vietnam. Both men are on journey s to the darkest of places: journey into self , and the discoveries to be made there. Both are about men confronting fears of failure, insanity, death, and cultural corruption. However, both are also are drastically different at times. Ronald Bogue s article The Heartless Darkness in Apocalypse Now provides a wonderful intake on commonalties and differences in the two works. He notes that by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction: In Latin America, soccer is not a game; it is a way of life. It is mixed in with politics and nationalism. It defines social classes. How politically influential is soccer in Latin America? It is used by various Latin American socio economic elites in order to retard the acceleration of working class and popular discontent (Bar On 1997:1.8). Is it then not intriguing that women play no part in the scheme of things? I can immediately off the top of my head name at least 5 male professional soccer players... and not a single female player. Of the 240 employees surveyed, only 70 of them were women, again demonstrating a lack of equality in the work force. Reference: Coates, G. • 50. Reflection On Group Presentation In the group presentation, my group and I presented on the issue of isms. This included focus on sexism, ageism, and racism. I felt that each person in our group was very diverse and unique which made our presentation stand out with having a little bit of individuality from each member in the presentation. Our main goal of communication was to inform the audienceon what exactly each ism is, discuss where each one is found, and how the are influenced in today s society. From the start of the grouppresentation process, I found myself being an emergent leader. With a lack of communication when our group first got together, I felt we were in need of leadership because it seemed nobody else was going to do anything such as getting each others numbers or creating a group name, so I decided to take charge the best I could. As time went on our group started to get our stuff together. With that said if we all began brainstorming and set up some procedural needs from the start, the group would of been on the same page and maybe some wouldn t have waited until the last moment. I was thankful for Jonathan for stepping up and helping the group get started with an outline and focusing on a question of policy along with answering any other questions that arose during the presentation process. Once the deadline got closer however is when we communicated the most. Sounds logical but my hope was that we all have most of the work done prior than the day before it was due so we could ...
