Controversy Essay
Writing an essay on the topic of controversy can be a challenging yet intellectually stimulating
task. The inherent nature of controversy often involves complex and multifaceted issues that
require careful examination and analysis. As an essay writer, you must navigate through varying
perspectives, conflicting opinions, and diverse sources of information to construct a well-
rounded and coherent argument.
One of the difficulties lies in maintaining objectivity while addressing controversial topics. It's
essential to present a balanced view, acknowledging different viewpoints and supporting
arguments with credible evidence. Striking the right balance between presenting a compelling
argument and respecting opposing opinions requires finesse and careful consideration.
Moreover, controversies often evolve, and new information may emerge as debates unfold.
Staying updated on the latest developments and adjusting your essay accordingly can be a
demanding task. The dynamic nature of controversial subjects demands thorough research and
constant vigilance to ensure the accuracy and relevance of your arguments.
In addition, the emotional intensity associated with controversial topics can pose a challenge. It's
crucial to address the emotional aspects of the subject without letting personal biases cloud your
analysis. Striking a tone that is both empathetic and rational is a delicate balance that requires
skillful writing and empathy towards diverse perspectives.
Crafting a compelling introduction and conclusion is another aspect of the challenge. The
introduction needs to grab the reader's attention and provide a clear roadmap for navigating the
complexities of the controversy. The conclusion should summarize key points, leaving a lasting
impression without oversimplifying the intricate issues at hand.
In conclusion, writing an essay on a controversial topic demands a combination of research,
critical thinking, objectivity, and effective communication skills. It's an intricate process that
requires dedication, patience, and the ability to navigate the complexities of multifaceted
subjects.

Lululemon Industry Analysis Essay
Industry Market Analysis Market Needs The first Lululemon store was initially
created as a place for people to gather to learn and share ideas about a healthy
lifestyle. As the company expanded, Lulu could no longer target every individual
walking into the store with knowledge of healthy living. At this point, the company
shifted its focus to educating their employees who could positively influence
everyone who walked into the stores. The thought and reasoning that went into the
first Lulu store has continued as the company has grown. It has continued to target
active people while pushing everyone towards a healthy lifestyle. Its main target
market is young woman, between 15 and 34 years old, in the middle to upper
classes. One of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the United States of America, being fit and active is an important value of the
culture. Many employers give out free gym memberships or encourage their
employees to take a longer lunch to go be active. According to Business Insurance,
many companies in New York have been organizing midday dance parties to give
their employees some time to get out from behind their desks and move. Feeling
good about the way one looks can be an important part of exercise because it
promotes higher self esteem. There is no longer a need to wait until you get into
shape to look good when companies like Lululemon are now producing exercise
wear that is fashionable. An industry professional was quoted as saying Our
customers desire clothing that they can work out in and then head out into the
world. If clothing fits well enough, then people are going to want to wear it all the
time. Although fashion trends are ever changing, Lululemon is always creating new
products to keep up with them. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the
retail industry is considered a high growth industry. The retail trade sector is the
nation s largest employer. The growth rate of real output for the retail trade sector of
the economy is 4.6% annually. From 2004 to 2014, the real output grew from 1.1

An Essay On The Natural By Bernard Malamud
The choices that we make today will impact our tomorrow. Whether we realize it
or not, every single time we do something, we are making a choice. Many of these
choices are subliminal, such as the direction we walk or the way we carry
ourselves, but some choices impact the way people look at us. More importantly,
some choices impact how successful we are in various things. I chose to write
about choices because choices are single handedly the most important thing in the
world. Everything we do on a daily basis is a choice, and choices are important to
me as a person because they are something I am trying to get better at. The choices
made in preparation for assorted events are undoubtedly the most important choices
that can be made in our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As people always say, Hindsight is 20/20 , but if we would look forward in time
and plan instead of making gut decisions, making better decisions and choices
would definitely be easier to do. Robert Frost said it best in his poem, The Road
Not Taken , when he said, Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps
the better claim (Frost). This shows that when Frost got to a fork in the road, he
sat down and evaluated both options before making a selection. He looked at the
path on the left and then the path on the right so he would know exactly which
choice to make and how that choice would work for him. This applies to
everybody. When there is a big choice to be made, we need to evaluate every
option and then look into the future to see how the options will benefit us later. If
at the time a choice seems perfect, but there is no future benefit, why make that
choice? If everybody has a common goal to be the best person that they can be and
to be as successful as they can in life, the choice that is made needs to be a thirty
day or thirty year decision, not a thirty second decision. Choice is defined as the act
of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities . Choices
are not optional. We do not even know we are making a choice most of the time.
Every second we make a choice. We make a choice of what to look at, listen to, or

Gender, Gender And Gender Roles
Gender can sometimes be seen as biological characteristics humans have, when in
fact it is the social characteristic ones society deems either masculine or feminine.
Sex, on the other hand, is the biological differences in humans, for example,
hormones and sex organs. People usually play gender roles in society, otherwise
known as genderideology. Gender ideology is when men and women have certain
attitudes regarding their fixed roles, responsibilities and rights. Throughout history
men and women have been socialized to play these expected roles that have been
placed on them due to their sex. In my own personal life I have encountered many
instances where I have been socialized in relation to sex and gender.
Within each and every society there is this process of learning ones social
expectations associated with their own sex. This is known as gender socialization,
and it is why men and women tend to behave differently. Because of gender
socialization women can be treated as if they are unequal to men. For example, in
my own life I grew up with an older brother and many other male cousins all close
in age. As a very young child, I was never allowed to play rough house with the
boys, run around with my top off, or even sit with my legs open. I would see my
brother and cousins playing with their Yu Gi Oh cards and action figures,
something I always wanted, while I would get dresses and Barbie dolls. It did not
bother me much at the time because I was so young, so I was
A Brief Explanation Of The Prisoner s Dilemma
Purpose: Introduction/background of problem
The purpose of this discussion is to give a brief explanation of the Prisoner s Dilemma
game, the notion of dominant strategy, and the concept of Nash equilibrium and
cooperation.
The Prisoner`s Dilemma game helps us understand what governs the balance between
cooperation and competition in business, in politics, and in social settings (Dixit
Nalebuff,
2008). An example, of a traditional method of this game is how a school principal
resolve
student conflicts by talking to both parties involved to determine the circumstance of
the event
that occurred. The strategy in this method is to try and determine the truth by
listening to two
conflicting stories of events. The Prisoner`s Dilemma in economics can be applied
when we look
at competing business and how they market their products to receive the best possible
revenue.
An example of this is the automobile industry and how to compete with one another
for customer
sale through competitive pricing and incentives. The notion of dominant strategy is
the notion
that one strategy is better than the other and this notion could typically give one side
an
advantage over another. This is great information to have but it all depends on how
this
information is implemented in a company s business practices. The concept of Nash
equilibrium
and cooperation is a concept that was developed by a mathematics graduate named,
John Forbes
Nash. The idea of the Nash
Positive Influences Of Sports Participation
Bradley, Keane and Crawford proved the positive influences of sport participation in
402 Irish secondary school students on the Leaving Certificate. The no sport group,
forming the control group, compared to the soccer and rugby team had slightly lower
test scores in the Leaving Certificate, whereas the only individual sport, rowing, was
significantly higher then the other two groups (Bradley, et al., 2013). In this study,
rowing, as the only individual sport tested, proved higher test results, which is not to
be forgotten that there exist limitations in the study such as no comparison to another
individual sport, the no comparison to another school, and the relatively small
number of rowers on a team.
It is interesting to see that the kind of sport makes a difference of the academic
performance (Bradley, et al., 2013). There has been years, where the scores of the
rowing team were pretty low but compared to either one of these other 3 sports they
were still on top (Bradley, et al., 2013). Especially in individual sports, athletes score
high in conscientiousness and autonomy, which are seen as key indicators for
athletes (Bradley, et al., 2013). This is equivalent to the key factors for high
achievers, which consist of high levels in conscientiousness and extraversion
(Colquitt Simmering, 1998 in Bradley, et al., 2013). Greater motivation to learn has
been shown in high conscientious individuals, which are characterized as more
reliable, self disciplined, and persevering
Essay On Juvenile And Juvenile Justice System
Throughout the 18th century, juveniles and adults were subject to the same criminal
justice system. Children and adolescents were regarded as adults and treated as
such in court and correction. In the 19th century, a reform took place which aimed at
addressing the issue of juveniles being incarcerated in adult jails. A new perception
of juveniles surfaced. They were no longer regarded as adults, but instead as persons
who have not yet reached adult cognitive and moral development. This new
perception has led reformers to create a new system, one that focuses on child and
adolescent offenders exclusively and that viewed adolescents and children as more
open to rehabilitation. The first juvenile court was established in 1899 in Cook
County, Illinois. It shifted the focus away from punishment and instead aimed at
identifying the underlying causes of the delinquent behavior... Show more content on

7). Until this day, the United States of America maintain a separate juvenile justice
system. It is similar to the criminal justice system in many ways. However, it is also
fundamentally different than the adult system. In the following, I will provide an
analysis of the similarities of and differences between both systems and discuss the
principles that build the basis for the different approach which is used in the juvenile
justice system. The juvenile and criminal justice system share common ground,
which can be explained by the fact that the juvenile system grew out of the criminal
justice system at the end of the 19th century. Until this day, both systems hold
Frontal Lobe Functions
The brain has many parts such as the frontal lobe and the cerebellum, which both
play major roles in the Human Brain. My first topic is the parts of the brain and all
what it controls,in this topic we will cover the frontal and temporal lobes. We will be
covering the cerebellum and its parts inside too.We will talk about how the brain
sends nerves from the frontal lobe to your eyes to cry or how your temporal lobes
send nerves to your nose to smell. Your frontal lobe is in the front part of your
brain and controls most of your personality. The frontal lobe controls some of your
voluntary movement. The frontal lobe does allot for instance when you are
searching for a word your frontal lobe is the lobe that does everything to put that
word out to your vocals to produce that word.Inside the frontal lobe is the primary
motor cortex which is the cortex which movement occurs, the motor cortex is what
sends nerves to your spinal cord which moves your muscles to move your legs or
arms.Damage is crucial to this part of the brain mostly because,it s the most
important lobe in the brain,if the frontal lobe was damaged you could lose so many
things, for example you could lose your hope or trust which are some crucial things
needed in life.Without the frontal lobe the personality of each
Ferdinand Von Zeppelin
The Zeppelin is a type of rigid airship that was created by Ferdinand von Zeppelin
at Lake Constance, Germany in 1899. The first Zeppelin was 420 feet long and at
maximum velocity could go 17 miles per hour. (If any non Americans want
measurements here they are 128.016 meters and 27.3588 kilometers per hour).
This particular invention was created to solve a problem of a steerable and heavy
duty (as in it can carry many passengers and large loads of cargo). This invention
also played a large role in World War I
because it was used for bombing raids and
carrying cargo. Zeppelins also could be used for luxurious flights. Take the lz 129
Graf Zeppelin and the lz 130 Hindenburg for example they were both grand and
lavish Zeppelins which carried many people. Ever since the Hindenburg crash and
the ever expanding prevalence of airplanes the Zeppelin will probably remain
unpopular.

that allow the Zeppelin to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Zeppelin originally used hydrogen gas due to its more efficient lift, but when
the Hindenburg incident occurred they changed to less efficient helium gas. (It is a
known fact that hydrogen gas is four times lighter than helium gas). Ferdinand von
Zeppelin started the Luftschiff Zeppelin Company due to growing demand for
Zeppelins mostly because of the war. Today, the Zeppelin leaves a small but
known trace/legacy of filming sports (like Goodyear s Zeppelin) and recreation.
(This is because of the Hindenburg incident which led to less popularity of the
Zeppelin Airship.) This invention was also used for the first civilian bombing in
history (as a military action anyhow). As of today we have a diminishing amount of
helium in our atmosphere, but the market is still large for balloons. (Not like the
balloons for the Zeppelin, but the balloons for little
Care For Health Campaign Essay
The care for health campaign was the first family planning promotion to be done in
Russia and it helped increase the use of modern contraceptives by 12%. It was part of
the womenВґs reproductive health program (WRHP) which involved training of
health care providers, advocacy and research. This intervention resulted in increase in
family planningcounselling for women, longer continuation rates of contraceptives
and increase in clinic attendance for family planning in the intervention areas. This
program was birthed in 1994 by the US Agency for international development to
improve the health of children and women by promoting the change in the current
family planning communication and service delivery system resulting in a greater...

The objectives of a campaign should resonate with the strategy (Myanmar, 2013).
This is the point where one asks questions such as what do I need to do to achieve
the overall goal of the campaign? In this case, one of the campaign objectives was to
increase knowledge and positive attitudes towards modern contraceptives. In so
doing, the campaign would be meeting the overall strategy which was to bring family
planning to the public arena and to highlight its importance.
Choosing an age bracket is also essential as one is able to seclude the target
audience in order to make the campaign strategy more effective. The age bracket for
women chosen was 18 30. This was also an appropriate age since it is the prime age
for reproduction.
One of the activities done was to disseminate the family planning message through
national television. The airtime was donated by the prime minister then. This was
effective as the message reached women throughout Russia and the neighboring
countries. The campaign also used a disco event to promote family planning
communication.

Physical And Psychological Effects Of Depressants
Drugs are substances that have physical and psychological effects on the body. Once
an individual has taken drugs multiple times they start to build a tolerance. When
tolerance is built an individual will up the dosage of the drug. Now the individual
will be addicted to the drug. People are addicted to drugs to compliment physical and
psychological dependence. There are many different types of drugs such as
psychoactive drugs, stimulants, and hallucinogens. Psychoactive drugs are drugs that
affect conciseness, mood, and your thoughts. Depressants are a type of psychoactive
drug. Physical effects of Depressants are Lowered blood pressure, Poor concentration,

Some of the most common stimulants are methamphetamine, caffeine, nicotine,
cocaine, and Ecstasy. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant drug. Its
physical effects include disturbed sleep patterns, Nausea, and Bizarre, erratic,
sometimes violent behavior. Methamphetamine increases the amount of dopamine,
which results in increased chemicals in the brain. Methamphetamine is a dopamine
agonist. Caffeine is a CNS stimulant. It is the world s most consumed drug. Some
physical effects include high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and hyperglycemia.
Caffeine binds to our brain s adenosine receptors; preventing the chemical from
binding with the receptors and making us tired. (This is what caffeine does to your
brain, 2014) Caffeine is a receptor antagonist. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical
substance present in tobacco. Some physical effects include heart disease, stroke, and
depression. The nicotine molecule is shaped like a neurotransmitter called
acetylcholine. Acetylcholine and its receptors are involved in many functions,
including muscle movement, breathing, heart rate, learning, and memory. They also
cause the release of other neurotransmitters and hormones that affect your mood,
appetite, memory, and more. When nicotine gets into the brain, it attaches to
acetylcholine receptors and mimics the actions of acetylcholine. (How Does
Nicotine Act in the Brain? 2015) Nicotine is an agonist to ACH. Cocaine is a highly
addictive drug synthetically derived from coca. Some physical effects of cocaine
include increased heart rate, body temperature, and increased rate of breathing.
Normally, dopamine is then recycled back into the transmitting neuron by a
specialized protein called the dopamine transporter. If cocaine is present, it attaches to
the dopamine transporter and blocks the normal recycling process, resulting in a
buildup of dopamine in the synapse, which contributes to the pleasurable effects of
cocaine.
Compare And Contrast Cortes And Francisco Pizarros
It is not always easy to compare two great things, like trying to compare apples to
oranges, but two of the world s most influential explorers? That is a challenge!
HernГЎn CortГ©s and Francisco pizarro are two that are pretty comparable, but are
also very different in their ways. HernГЎn Cortes is one of Spains most influential
explorers. He heard of the failed expeditions that had been repelled by the indians,
and he believed that he could succeed where they had failed. In 1519, he landed of
the coast of mexicowith about 600 troops, 16 horses, and some cannons. The armour
they wore and the guns, horses, and cannons had never been seen by the indians
before. The message quickly got back to Moctezuma, who sent emissaries to make
peace with the conquistadors. This soon was found to be unsuccessful and CortГ©s
started making his inland trek to TenochtitlГЎn. As he was making his way, he ran
into many villages, many of which he recruited to help him in the fight against the
Aztec people. CortГ©s himself was thought to be Quetzalcoatl by Moctezuma, a god

The empire was located in Peru, and pizarro landed on the coast in 1532. This was
just after a bloody civil war, in which Atahualpa had won the throne of the Inca
from his brother. The ruler refused to become a Spanish Vassal or to convert to
christianity. Pizarro, in response, captured him with the aid of indian allies. They
slaughtered thousands of Inca, and demanded a high ransom price for Atahualpa.
The Inca paid the price, and the Spanish killed the leader anyway. Despite
continuous resistance from the Inca, Pizarro made his way across the Incan
heartland and conquered the empire. From peru, Spanish forces ran rampant
through Ecuador and Chile, and before long had most of South America to its

The Death Penalty And Capital Punishment
The Death Penalty Many people begin their morning with a cup of coffee and the
daily news, whether attained by social media, television, or the radio. News coverage
of death penalty cases, grabs the attention of an audience. The death penalty is an
emotional issue for individuals to ponder. In fact, America s opinion of capital
punishmentdepends on its constitutionality, deterrence, retribution, and the
irrevocable mistakes made by sending an innocent defendant to death row. The
death penalty also known as capital punishment is legal in thirty one states and
illegal in nineteen states, to include the District of Columbia, ( History of, 2015.)

Analyze Carl Cohen s Premises
Next, I will analyze Carl Cohen s premises. Cohen s arguments about disagreeing
animal s right that contains of two premises to conclude that animals cannot have
rights, the premises have some contradictions. The first premise which is any beings
can have rights if they have free moral judgement, is logically strong. It is strong due
to the fact that all beings have to respect each other s rights if they understand what
the judgement is. Like golden rule, beings treated each beings the same when the
other beings understand. But, if there is something that make the beings to speak out,
they can do so because other beings are treating it the same way. Beings can have
rights because they understand that they have to fight for one if one does not

Stress and Cancer
Introduction
The human body is an intricately interlinked organism. Every system of the body
has a role to play in the well being of the other. The most prevalent disease of the
modern age is cancer, and there has been considerable effort to determine the causes
of cancer. Substantial research in this regard point to stress being one of the leading
causes of cancer.
The Impact of Stress on Cancer Cancer, medically called tumorigenesis (Thaker,
Lutgendorf, Sood, 2007, p.430) occurs when cells in the body orient themselves for
malignant growth. Such cells show self sufficiency in growth signals , are insensitive
to anti growth signals and have limitless replicative potential (Thaker, Lutgendorf,
Sood, 2007, p.430). Once a particular set of cells become malignant, the malignancy
can spread to other set of cells in different organs due to crosstalk between the
affected cells and their surrounding tissues and micro environments (Thaker,
Lutgendorf, Sood, 2007, p.430). Current research is focusing on the role of
neuropeptides and neurotransmitters in the occurrence of cancer. Researchers have
observed that cancerous cells require nutrients and the diffusion of oxygen to
proliferate malignantly. In this aspect, stress related hormones act as inhibitors or
stimulants to cancerous growth depending upon the type of hormone and the type of
cancer. It has been established that пЃў agnostic
The Effect Of Western Culture
Article Summary This article is focused on the effects of western culture, particularly
the modern ideals of ultra thin bodies, on non western women. The author, Jaita
Talukdar, decided to spend some time in India in order to conduct research on the
topic. During her stay, she discovered many different things about these Indian
women, including what motivates them to want to lose weight, their opinion on the
current standards of beauty in western culture, and how these ideals have become
ingrained into their culture. Talukdar touched base on the existing research by
Suzanne Brenner regarding beauty standards in non western cultures, such as the idea
of an in between mindset the ability of a person to actively participate in both
traditional and modern worlds and alternative modernity which centers on the internal
conflict to apply modernity while still conforming to the rules of tradition (Talukdar
112). These concepts were the starting point for her investigation, influencing the
questions that she chose to ask. Alternative modernity was what inspired her theory
of speculative modernity, in which a womancritiques both the traditional and modern
ways before applying them to her life. Previous researchers like Hesse Biber chose to
focus on how the western pageant circuit and the beauty industry brought these ideals
into India, following the loosening of the strict traditions that came with the
globalization of the country in the twentieth century. However, these

Machiavelli s Attitude To Florence In 1494
In 1494, the ruling Florentine family, the Medicis, was expelled. Shortly after their
expulsion, Savanorola, a Dominican religious zealot, took control. During this time,
Italy suffered from intense political conflict. The city states of Florence, Milan,
Venice, and Naples fought for control as did the papacy, France, Spain, and the Holy
Roman Empire. Each tried to play others off of others and engaged in blackmail and
violence. When Machiavelli returned to Florencein 1494, Italywas invaded by Charles
VIII of France. The events of this tumultuous era influenced Machiavelli s attitudes
toward government and formed the background for his later pleas for unity.
Savanorola s criticism of the Church brought the reign of pope Alexander short,
excommunicating him in 1497. In 1498, Machiavelli entered the Florentine

philosophies he used to inspire individual thought became useless. By 1512, the
Medici family regained control of Florence and Machiavelli was dismissed from
office. A year later, he was wrongly accused of participating in a conspiracy to
restore the republic and held for three weeks. He left Florence and decided to
pursue a career in writing. His first book Discourses, begun in 1513 and completed
in 1521, focused on states controlled by a politically active citizenry. During this

Vermeer s Girl With A Pearl Earring
At this point in the novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring, Johannes Vermeer, the famous
painter of the 1600 s, has taking a special liking to Griet, he describes her in the
novel as a muse like figure. After sharing his life story, and feelings towards his
paintings and fame with Griet, he asks that she pose for a painting. Griet allows
Vermeer to do so, not solely because she feels the connection between them but more
so because he is her boss and is of a higher rank than her. Catharina, the wife of
Johannes Vermeerat this time, is incredibly jealous of Griet and the attention that she
gets from her husband. At the beginning of Griet s career, Catharina told Griet s
mother that she could visit on sundays while the family was at the Catholic Church.
NICE Review Essay
Impact of the NICE guideline recommending cessation of antibiotic prophylaxis for
prevention of infective endocarditis: before and after study: A Review Thornhill et
al. s article on the cessation of antibiotic prophylaxis and its impact on infective
endocarditis examined, both, prescriptions for antibiotics of a standard
premedication dose (3g amoxicillin or 600mg clindamycin) and diagnoses or deaths
due to infective endocarditis between January 2000 and April 2010. The time frame
chosen for this study was critical due to the release of updated NICE guidelines,
stating providers should cease use of any antibiotic prophylaxis for dental and other
medical procedures. By examining the time surrounding the NICE guidelines, the
researchers hoped to evaluate any relationship between premedicative prescriptions
and incidents of infective endocarditis. They hypothesized that in order to see
evidence that the NICE guidelines were valid, there would be minimal to no change
in rate of infective endocarditis after the NICE guidelines became effective compared
to before, even though the amount of prescription decreased. The researchers felt that
this study was necessary due to the limited large scale studies relating to recent

The two most significant weakness related to the lack of specificity in etiological
origin of the endocarditis, and an expanded discussion in relevance of results. The
researchers explained that due to gathering their data from hospitals there was often a
lack in specificity of microorganism identification in the codes submitted. More
importantly, the researchers largely discussed the limitations in their study, rather
than discussing the uses and significance of the article. While it is good to identify
possible sources of error, the researchers overly focused on this, decreasing the

Similarities Between Chris Mccandless And John Krakauer
Chris McCandless, Jon Krakauer, and Henry David Thoreau embrace the ideal of a
transcendental lifestyle. In the book, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer shows the
connection between Chris McCandless and Henry David Thoreau. They both believe
in certain points such as living deliberately, simplicity, and individualism. Within the
book, Into the Wild, Krakauer reveals the philosophy of Transcendentalism through
living deliberately, simplicity, and individualism. Having a simple life is one of
the transcendental beliefs Chris is trying to follow. An example of this is when
Krakauer says, Alex insisted on giving Gallien his watch, his comb, and what he said
was all his money: eighty five cents in loose change (Krakauer 7). This shows that
Alex, aka Chris, wants to give all of his belongings away to live a more simple life.
Chris obviously gets the idea of a simple life from Henry David Thoreauwho preaches
simplicity. Thoreau says, An honest man has no need to count more than... Show more

An example of this is when Chris says, This is the last communication you shall
receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great
knowing you (Krakauer 69). This shows that Chris wanted to venture out on his
own and live amongst the wild for a little while. Henry David Thoreau taught that
if someone wanted to take a different way in their life then they should be allowed
to do so. Thoreau says, If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it
is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music that he hears,
however measured or far away (Thoreau). This quote relates to Chris McCandless
because it states that if someone wants to take a different route in life, then he should
be allowed to. Individualism and stepping to the beat of a different drummer is
another main key to living a transcendental lifestyle. Another example of a
transcendental belief is living
The Voyage of Christopher Columbus
American History I 07/08/05 Christopher Columbus Voyage to North America
Spanish exploration first began with a series of revolutions. First, the Commercial
Revolution generated economic stability. Second, the Intellectual Revolution
generated interest in the Earth s composition and the pursuit of exploration. Europe
then called for a political revolution to end the disorganized and disorderly rule of its
government. This revolution returned order and stability to the government and
renewed interest in exploration to search for national wealth. The last of these
revolutions was the religious revolution (note Columbus voyage occurred before this
revolution). As more people broke away from the national religion they searched for

Afterwards, Columbus then went to Lisbon, Spain a year later where he would
propose the voyage to King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile.
When Columbus made a friend in Father Perez, it was a turning point for him. He
was able to gain support from converts who believed in his cause. Ferdinand and
Isabella were harder to convince, however. They found little interest in Columbus
curiosity as they were preoccupied with defending themselves against the Moors.
Later in 1491, Columbus again appears before Ferdinand and Isabella who
apparently liked and respected the determined seaman (38) 1. Although they had
admiration for Columbus, his plans for voyage were again rejected, partially
because of his request to titles and riches. It seems that Columbus gave but scant
and unsatisfactory information to the commission, probably through fear that his
ideas might be improperly made use of and he be robbed of the glory and
advantages that he expected to derive from his project (2) 2. But Columbus was
not yet discouraged, for he was a gentleman of great force and spiritВ…naturally
inclined to undertake worthy deeds and signal enterprisesВ… (21) 3. 1492 was a
successful year for the Spanish. On January 2, Grenada surrendered which freed
Spain of the foreign power that occupied the city for seven centuries (35) 1. When
Columbus was asked to march in the parade at Grenada he took it as an opportunity
to propose his voyage for a third time and
Japan And India Dbq Essay
Throughout the late 1800s to the early 1900s, both japan and India saw a rise in the
use of machines in the textile industry. Both showed similar recruitment techniques,
but were not so similar in who the workers were and their working conditions.
The Indian textiles chart showed how India used machines to produce greater yarn
and cloth amounts in 1914 as compared to the production in 1884. As well it
demonstrated how the amount of people using machine made textiles had greatly
increased opposed to hand made textiles (Doc 1). In 1916 Radhakamal Mukerjee, an
Indian economist, explains how that handwoven textiles cannot keep up with the
machine made textiles, and therefore is on a decline (Doc 6). This identifies how

The story of a Japanese factory worker illustrates the harsh long hours fork work,
no heat, and small portions of food. On top of that they were not paid much or at
all for the first year of their work (Doc 3). When the horrifically high number of
sick people at the factory is added, the working conditions in the Japanese textile
factories seem barely livable. In contrast the Indian factory workers lived in their
own huts and worked for only two years (Doc 9). This shows much better living
conditions for Indian workers than Japanese workers. Since the document is written

It proves to be quite difficult to detect and diagnose due to the patient s compulsive
lying as an inherent part of the disorder (Valentine, 2014). Furthermore, it proves even
more difficult to treat. Most sufferers, with proper psychological therapeutic
treatments, may make improvements, but will never make a full recovery (Turner
Reid, 2002). Most sufferers will relapse and continue feigning illness if continuous
psychotherapy is not maintained (Turner Reid, 2002). In order to provide
Munchausen sufferers with the best possible chance of recovery, it is essential that
hospital personnel recognize and understand the classical hallmarks of Munchausen
syndrome. Pathological lying, falsification of symptoms, extensive knowledge of
disorders, tests and treatments, doctor shopping and frequent hospitalizations are all
classical hallmarks of the disorder. Understanding and identifying these symptoms
allows for medical professionals to intervene at the right time and get the patients
the help they desperately need, thus allowing the patient access to valuable and
possibly lifesaving psychological help, saving the patient from needless surgeries
and invasive treatments, as well as saving time and other valuable resources that
would otherwise be wasted by hospital staff in treating falsified disorders. Successful
diagnosis and psychological treatment are crucial in the patient s overall well being

Peter Pan And Anne Of Green Gables Comparison
In today s society, there is a persistent belief that children and adults are
fundamentally different. Society has placed a gap between these generations that
is evident throughout movies and children s literature. In J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan
and L.M. Montgomery s Anne of Green Gables, binary oppositions come into play
regarding childhood and adulthood, specifically the difference in imagination and
reality. This binary opposition is expressed greatly among the characters in both
novels. The children were introduced as possessing a wide range of imagination,
however as the novel progressed, as do their age, their imagination gradually
diminished to a more realistic view of life. The adults are focused on the reality of
life, so much so, that they do not have any room for imagination. These adults
always conform to social standards in which they live a basic life from work to
home and back. They don t have any time to ponder their imagination due to a

Comparing The Similarities Of Epic Heroes And Medieval
Heroes
A hero is a strong, brave character that is always the protagonist in a story and
always saves the day when there is danger. Superhero s today like Superman, Iron
man, Spider man ect. all share qualities that make them heroic. Whether they have
a special ability or they are just strong and brave people. Epic heroes and Medieval
heroes are two heroes that have qualities that are different. Medieval heroes are
brave, loyal, and gentlemanly while epic heroes are strong, brave, they possess non
human qualities, and can be a little cocky. Every super heroin movies day possess
some ability that makes them different from normal people just like epic heroes.
Epic heroes seem to be more alike modern day heroes than the medieval heroes
because their traits are very alike. Beowulfis a prime example of this because of his
super strength which can be compared to modern day hero superman.
Epic heroes are brave and strong characters that possess non human abilities and
can also be a little cocky. Take Beowulf as an example, he is a character that is
strong and does things that no regular person possesses while also being a little
cocky. An example of him being able to do things other humans can do is when he
is fighting Grendel. As he is fighting Grendel he ends the battle when he completely
rips off his arm. He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder,
snapped, muscle and bone split and broke, the battle was over Beowulf had been
granted new glory (Source A). This
Educators Should Try to Reform the Culture Essay
I believe that educators should try to reform the culture because knowledge is
never complete but an ongoing search. If one does not seek to change then they
might be stuck with an old idea that is no longer relevant. At one point it was
believed that the earth was the center of the universe or the earth was flat. It was
also once believed that women did not have the brain power to own properties or
vote but we learn differently. My teachers in primary schooldid not know that children
have different learningstyles and not all children learn at the same pace and so their

While my son was in Junior High School he came home one day and commented
on how he could not hold a decent conversation with his friends. He went on to say
they were easily distracted and had no opinion of their own or had any knowledge

to make such a profound statement because outside of school his father took the
time to hold intellectual conversations with him. My son grew in knowledge and at
a young age was able to have heated discussion with his father. This form of
communication he tried to share with his friends but became frustrated. Erasmus
theory of involving our youth into intellectual conversation can only prove to be
beneficial to our youth. There are students who excel in academics but are poor at
discussing simple matters. Schools these days don t have debates teams anymore.
This was one way to appeal to or force our youth to think and communicate
intellectually. Erasmus was a believer of students bringing their own knowledge to

Claude Vignon s David With The Head Of Goliath
The art piece created by Claude Vignon , David with the Head of Goliath has three
important elements that are vital towards the piece in order to portray a message of
power and authority. Which are the focal point, proportions, and the contrast of this
particular piece. The artwork is oil on canvas that was made around in 1593 1670.
The subject matter of the artwork is depicting the moment of pride Davidhad with the
head of the giant Goliathbeing laid next to his small body. The portrait of David is
seen on the viewers middle left side, while the head of Goliath is in the middle
right side next to David s. David is seen wearing clothes that appear to be a size to
big on him, to the point where the shirt is slipping from his shoulder (exposing his
left shoulder). The clothes themselves are interpreted as royal clothing, having a big
headpiece located in the top half of the painting. With the exposed shoulder being

Leaving it up to the viewers imagination to show how big he was compared to this

shape size of David s body was smaller to that of Goliath. As well as the form.
While David has a body considered small and scrawny, Goliath s head alone the
viewer was able to see his form had muscle and he was a bulky man. This element
has shaped the artists message in allowing for the difference between David who is
portrayed as small and weak, and Goliath who is depicted as a giant who was most
likely powerful physically. Thus, allowing the reader to further the admiration of
what David had done, which was best this giant although him being a scrawny young

Redefining the Tragic
The power of tragic heroes in literature is almost immeasurable in that they evoke
multiple emotions within the reader. Through pain and suffering, heroes of tragedy
fill the audience with not only terror and pity, but also relief through a cathartic
experience. Over two thousand years ago, Aristotle first defined what characteristics
make up a tragic hero. He claimed that heroes of tragedy must be fundamentally
decent, of noble status, and eventually destroyed by a situation that exposes their one
tragic flaw. Consider Chinua Achebes famous Things Fall Apart: the protagonist of
the novel, the once mighty and respected warrior, Okonkwo of Umofia, is the
paragon of the Aristotelian definition of a tragic hero. His suicide and loss of
power within the tribe is not caused by his negative qualities, but rather his respect
to his elders and their traditions. However, there are also characters of literature that
do not fulfill all of Aristotle s requirements and still leave the reader with an
overwhelming sense of tragedy. For instance, the main character of John Steinbeck s
Of Mice and Men, the average and short tempered, George Milton, fails to meet
several aspects of the ancient definition. Despite his low social status, George s
murder of his mentally disabled companion, Lennie, consumes the reader with a
feeling of both compassion and fear. Also consider The Good Earth by

Comparing Venus Of Willendorf And Venus De Milo
The Venus of Willendorf and Venus De Milo are well known statutes that portray a
goddess that represents beauty and love. Even though both statues were made in
different eras, the Venus of Willendorf and Venus De Milo share some of the same
attributes and differences. Therefore, the Venus of Willendorf was made in the
Paleolithicperiod which symbolizes fertility and Venus De Milo was made in the
Hellenistic period and represents Aphrodite which is the goddess of beauty. To begin,
the Paleolithic period is known as the earliest use of stone tools. Based on theory, the
Paleolithic age started to begin with the first appearance of the human form. Even

Thus, Venus De Milo was made around 150 BC in Milos, Greece. Alexandro s statue
portrays the goddess known as Aphrodite when she won victory. This is a missing
arm that was outstretched and her hand help an apple. Also, her other hand held
up her garment that is about to slip off her hips (Bleiberg, Edward I.). Even after
the original pieces were found, the mystery of the missing arm had already
developed popularity, so the arms were not attached to the body. Also, Venus De
Milo was mimic to be like Aphrodite because she was known as beautiful goddess.
More, Venus De Milo is topless and the artist depicts seduction because she is only
wearing a drape. The twisting stance and projection of the knee adds erotic tension
that is Hellenistic in concept and intent. The Venus De Milo still retains mystery. As
many people assume that she represents Aphrodite because of her curves and
nudity, some assume that the artist depicts the dea goddess Amphitrite who
worshipped on Milo (Curtis, Greg). Even though many people are assuming that
the artist is trying to depict Aphrodite or Amphitrite, Venus De Milo is a goddess
that shows love and beauty. She resembles a beautiful women who seduces men
such as Aphrodite. Aphrodite seduced Tory as he reward the most beautiful
goddess, and she appears to win the golden apple. However, Venus De Milo was
holding an apple, which many people assume that she is Aphrodite based on the
lingering of the drapery and she is
Vengeance In The Count Of Monte Cristo
Vengeance in The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond Dantes, the protagonist in The
Count of Monte Cristo, is a man on the verge of great happiness, but that is all
dramatically and irreparably ripped away. Edmond Dantes is a character who is in
search of revenge for those who wronged him. A character analysis of Dantes
reveals that through his characteristics, vow of revenge, the symbolism in the death
of Fernand, and the symbolism in the eventual fall of Danglars, Edmond Dantes
portrays the archetype of a hero in search of revenge. The archetype of revenge
centers around vengeance being the main goal of the protagonist. Warren Poland
describes vengeance as the rage for retribution, festering till satisfied by destructive
acts (Poland). This describes just how destructive the search for vengeance can be.
In most stories where the overarching theme is about vengeance, the protagonist is
sacrificing hope of a normal life for drowning his sorrow in the blood of those who
wronged him. The theme of vengeance can improve any story by adding a feeling
that the reader can connect with and understand. This feeling of pursuing an
ultimate goal at any cost is most present when the hero is turned into a villain that
may use twisted logic to justify harming, killing, or ruining the life of another, and
yet the reader does not see him as a villain. Most readers support the hero in search
of vengeance because it is a guilty pleasure that most are unwilling to give up, even
if it breaks their moral code. The archetype of vengeance begins with a vow of
revenge made by Dantes. This vow is important as it establishes the archetype of
revenge; it was not supported by Abbe Faria, and represents the things that Dantes
lost, has, and is willing to give up. According to biblestudytools, A vow is a solemn
promise made to God to perform or to abstain from performing a certain thing , and
this correlates with the vow that Dantes makes, as his vow is a verbal manifestation
of Dantes commitment to revenge and helps establish the motif of vengeance at any
cost (Smith). The vow made by Dantes carried heavy meaning; he had formed a
terrible resolution and taken a fearful oath which meant that Dantes life was no
longer his own, and his

In The Time Of The Butterflies Gender Analysis
.
I have noticed several influences in In the Time of the Butterflies, primarily gender
inequalities and political tensions. Alvarez also does a great job incorporating the
Dominican Republic s traditions and religion. Unfortunately, this article did not have
much relating to the politics in this novel s time period, but did mention quite a few
examples of gender inequality. The first sign of gender inequality I saw in this
novel was rather subtle, a car slowed, and the boys inside called out compliments.
Sister scowled fiercely at them... and based on the Sister s response to this, I believe
catcalls would be a better term instead of compliments (Alvarez, 27). The article
transitioned to family and mentioned that children stayed in their
Shipwreck Narrator s Report
Based on June Dwyer s article, Yann Martel s Life of Pi and the Evolution of the
Shipwreck Narrative, the ages of characters in literature are directly proportional to
their dominance over animals in shipwreck narratives. Dwyer expands on this when
he discusses Tzvetan Todorov s human/animal relations: equal standing, subjective
ownership, and complete dominance. Childlike characters customarily will treat
animals as their equals without any desire to enforce control. Specifically, Dwyer
employs the children s story Amos and Boris, by William Steig, to further explain
the relationship. In the book, a lost mouse and an amiable whale become the best of
friends as they travel back to Amos home in Africa. Steig purposely made both
characters animals,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
there is only continuity (Dwyer, 11). Since children identify with animals, it
comes as no surprise that they do not yearn to rule over animals. Once adolescents
characters come into play, they begin to regard animals as their subjective
accomplices rather than their companions. To further explain this, Dwyer brings
up Walter Farley s book: The Black Stallion. Farley s shipwreck narrative contains
an adolescent named Alec Ramsey stranded on a island with a horse named Black.
Although they develop a strong friendship, Alec is evidently Black s master. Alec
s dominance is shown when he mounts the horse and Farley confirms He felt sure
that from that day on, the Black was his his alone! (Dwyer, 13). Earlier in the
article Dwyer discussed how adolescents are eager to exercise their maturity , so
Alec cheerfully raving after acquiring control of Black is an appropriate reaction.
Lastly, adult characters in shipwreck narratives have no issues exhibiting dominance
over animals, which leaves no room for friendship. To explore their content, Dwyer
examines Daniel Defoe s shipwreck narrative, Robinson
Charleston s Water Pollution
Going to the beach is always a fun way to spend an afternoon, but how would people
feel if the next time they tried to catch a wave they were hit with plastic bottles and
styrofoam. Charleston is such a beautiful city but, the harbor is overcome with
pollution. This Pollution travels to the oceans and to the shores of South Carolina s
beaches. The water is affecting Charleston s harbor but household water, local
businesses, and marine life in the area. Water pollutionshould not be looked over and
needs to be taken care of before it gets worse. More and more ways are being
discovered to help treat water pollution around the world, but what needs to happen is
to stop the pollution. Around the world water pollution is a definite obstacle;... Show

The litter has put the animals at such high risk of danger that most of these species
are now endangered. Some ways the animals are harmed are suffocating on plastic
bags, getting trapped in bottle holders, or being poisoned by the toxins in some litter.
These fish becoming poisoned by the toxins can carry disease and end up on your
plate. Local seafood restaurants or grocery stores cannot tell if the fish they serve to
you has been affected by the hazardous pollution. The fishermen that catch the fish
locally cannot see a difference between the diseased fish and normal ones either so
the pollution in the community deposits into the harbor can come right back. The
local population also drinks the water that has been filtered and sometimes contains
dangerous minerals. This water runs through showers and faucets in homes that
people use every day.
These reasons all concern the local community and they should because water
pollution is a serious problem and if people do not take action immediately than
Charleston s water could become a wasteland instead of a fun afternoon. Most people
believe that the pollution is too much for them to handle, but there are multiple ways
everyone can get involved and help out the community. Dozens of volunteers filled
burlap sacks with frayed rope, empty liquor bottles, flattened drink cups, and
fragmented pieces of plastic that were pulled from the marsh (Elmore 1). These
people volunteered to help the community by picking up trash at
Analysis Of Lather And Nothing Else
It takes a special type of person to not act in accordance with the majority.
However, once over the mob mentality people could see things in a different light.
In Hernando Tellez s short story Lather and Nothing Else , the protagonist, who is a
barber, must have the foresight to make the right call. Two rival political
movements are at odds with one another in the setting of the story, 1800 s Latin
America. The barber is secretly a rebel and is surprised when a customer of his is
Captain Torres, who is a pro government enforcer. Even though they are of rival
parties, the barber throughout the short storycontemplates whether or not he should
murder the man. Ultimately, he decides not to killthe captain because he values his
reputation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ties back to the idea that the decision he made was the right one. The barber
has a personal connection with Captain Tellez, a murderer. He watched him hang
four of his former comrades after a skirmish between them occurred; the barber
further incentive to kill him. However, using foresight and reasoning, he realizes
that killing him would be futile as there will be more to take his place. The barber is
realizing the futility of the potential aftermath that could follow by killing Tellez.
Thinking to himself he says; What is to be gained by it? Nothing. Others and still
others keep coming, and the first kill the second...and so on until everything becomes
a sea of blood (Tellez 3). In this quotation the protagonist questions his motives. The
fleeting nationalism that the rebel movement ensued upon him makes him ponder.
However, it is soon followed up by a powerful one worded sentence, Nothing as the
barber makes up his mind. Also, the author uses phrases such as others and still
others and so on to give us a sense of the futility of the situation. It paints a picture in
the reader s mind of the amount of power and people the government has against the
rebels. This ties into the main idea that by saving himself and sticking to what he
knows, rather than kill Captain Tellez, was a good decision. In conclusion, in
Hernando Tellez s short story, Lather and Nothing
Marvin Gaye s Song Inner City Blues
Inner City Blues Inner City Blues, short for Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna

This song was released as the third and final single from the compelling song of his
1971 milestone album, What s Going On. In this song, Gaye talks about poverty and
hopelessness in the ghetto urban places of the 1960 s. Many of Gaye s songs contain
political and social issues; Inner City Bluesis great melody that depicts the political

Lululemon Industry Analysis Essay Industry Market Analysis Market Needs The first Lululemon store was initially created as a place for people to gather to learn and share ideas about a healthy lifestyle. As the company expanded, Lulu could no longer target every individual walking into the store with knowledge of healthy living. At this point, the company shifted its focus to educating their employees who could positively influence everyone who walked into the stores. The thought and reasoning that went into the first Lulu store has continued as the company has grown. It has continued to target active people while pushing everyone towards a healthy lifestyle. In the United States of America, being fit and active is an important value of the culture. Many employers give out free gym memberships or encourage their employees to take a longer lunch to go be active. According to Business Insurance, many companies in New York have been organizing midday dance parties to give their employees some time to get out from behind their desks and move. Feeling good about the way one looks can be an important part of exercise because it promotes higher self esteem. There is no longer a need to wait until you get into shape to look good when companies like Lululemon are now producing exercise wear that is fashionable. An industry professional was quoted as saying Our customers desire clothing that they can work out in and then head out into the world. • 3. An Essay On The Natural By Bernard Malamud The choices that we make today will impact our tomorrow. Whether we realize it or not, every single time we do something, we are making a choice. Many of these choices are subliminal, such as the direction we walk or the way we carry ourselves, but some choices impact the way people look at us. More importantly, some choices impact how successful we are in various things. I chose to write about choices because choices are single handedly the most important thing in the world. Everything we do on a daily basis is a choice, and choices are important to me as a person because they are something I am trying to get better at. The choices made in preparation for assorted events are undoubtedly the most important choices that can be made in our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As people always say, Hindsight is 20/20 , but if we would look forward in time and plan instead of making gut decisions, making better decisions and choices would definitely be easier to do. Robert Frost said it best in his poem, The Road Not Taken , when he said, Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim (Frost). This shows that when Frost got to a fork in the road, he sat down and evaluated both options before making a selection. He looked at the path on the left and then the path on the right so he would know exactly which choice to make and how that choice would work for him. This applies to everybody. When there is a big choice to be made, we need to evaluate every option and then look into the future to see how the options will benefit us later. If at the time a choice seems perfect, but there is no future benefit, why make that choice? If everybody has a common goal to be the best person that they can be and to be as successful as they can in life, the choice that is made needs to be a thirty day or thirty year decision, not a thirty second decision. Choice is defined as the act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities . Choices are not optional. We do not even know we are making a choice most of the time. Every second we make a choice. We make a choice of what to look at, listen to, or even
  • 4. Gender, Gender And Gender Roles Gender can sometimes be seen as biological characteristics humans have, when in fact it is the social characteristic ones society deems either masculine or feminine. Sex, on the other hand, is the biological differences in humans, for example, hormones and sex organs. People usually play gender roles in society, otherwise known as genderideology. Gender ideology is when men and women have certain attitudes regarding their fixed roles, responsibilities and rights. Throughout history men and women have been socialized to play these expected roles that have been placed on them due to their sex. In my own personal life I have encountered many instances where I have been socialized in relation to sex and gender. Within each and every society there is this process of learning ones social expectations associated with their own sex. This is known as gender socialization, and it is why men and women tend to behave differently. Because of gender socialization women can be treated as if they are unequal to men. For example, in my own life I grew up with an older brother and many other male cousins all close in age. As a very young child, I was never allowed to play rough house with the boys, run around with my top off, or even sit with my legs open. I would see my brother and cousins playing with their Yu Gi Oh cards and action figures, something I always wanted, while I would get dresses and Barbie dolls. It did not bother me much at the time because I was so young, so I was
  • 5. A Brief Explanation Of The Prisoner s Dilemma Purpose: Introduction/background of problem The purpose of this discussion is to give a brief explanation of the Prisoner s Dilemma game, the notion of dominant strategy, and the concept of Nash equilibrium and cooperation. The Prisoner`s Dilemma game helps us understand what governs the balance between cooperation and competition in business, in politics, and in social settings (Dixit Nalebuff, 2008). An example, of a traditional method of this game is how a school principal resolve student conflicts by talking to both parties involved to determine the circumstance of the event that occurred. The strategy in this method is to try and determine the truth by listening to two conflicting stories of events. The Prisoner`s Dilemma in economics can be applied when we look at competing business and how they market their products to receive the best possible revenue. An example of this is the automobile industry and how to compete with one another for customer sale through competitive pricing and incentives. The notion of dominant strategy is the notion that one strategy is better than the other and this notion could typically give one side an advantage over another. This is great information to have but it all depends on how this information is implemented in a company s business practices. The concept of Nash equilibrium and cooperation is a concept that was developed by a mathematics graduate named, John Forbes

  • 7. Positive Influences Of Sports Participation Bradley, Keane and Crawford proved the positive influences of sport participation in 402 Irish secondary school students on the Leaving Certificate. The no sport group, forming the control group, compared to the soccer and rugby team had slightly lower test scores in the Leaving Certificate, whereas the only individual sport, rowing, was significantly higher then the other two groups (Bradley, et al., 2013). In this study, rowing, as the only individual sport tested, proved higher test results, which is not to be forgotten that there exist limitations in the study such as no comparison to another individual sport, the no comparison to another school, and the relatively small number of rowers on a team. It is interesting to see that the kind of sport makes a difference of the academic performance (Bradley, et al., 2013). There has been years, where the scores of the rowing team were pretty low but compared to either one of these other 3 sports they were still on top (Bradley, et al., 2013). Especially in individual sports, athletes score high in conscientiousness and autonomy, which are seen as key indicators for athletes (Bradley, et al., 2013). This is equivalent to the key factors for high achievers, which consist of high levels in conscientiousness and extraversion (Colquitt Simmering, 1998 in Bradley, et al., 2013). Greater motivation to learn has been shown in high conscientious individuals, which are characterized as more reliable, self disciplined, and persevering
  • 8. Essay On Juvenile And Juvenile Justice System Throughout the 18th century, juveniles and adults were subject to the same criminal justice system. Children and adolescents were regarded as adults and treated as such in court and correction. In the 19th century, a reform took place which aimed at addressing the issue of juveniles being incarcerated in adult jails. A new perception of juveniles surfaced. They were no longer regarded as adults, but instead as persons who have not yet reached adult cognitive and moral development. This new perception has led reformers to create a new system, one that focuses on child and adolescent offenders exclusively and that viewed adolescents and children as more open to rehabilitation. The first juvenile court was established in 1899 in Cook County, Illinois. It shifted the focus away from punishment and instead aimed at identifying the underlying causes of the delinquent behavior... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 7). Until this day, the United States of America maintain a separate juvenile justice system. It is similar to the criminal justice system in many ways. However, it is also fundamentally different than the adult system. In the following, I will provide an analysis of the similarities of and differences between both systems and discuss the principles that build the basis for the different approach which is used in the juvenile justice system. The juvenile and criminal justice system share common ground, which can be explained by the fact that the juvenile system grew out of the criminal justice system at the end of the 19th century. Until this day, both systems hold

Frontal Lobe Functions The brain has many parts such as the frontal lobe and the cerebellum, which both play major roles in the Human Brain. My first topic is the parts of the brain and all what it controls,in this topic we will cover the frontal and temporal lobes. We will be covering the cerebellum and its parts inside too.We will talk about how the brain sends nerves from the frontal lobe to your eyes to cry or how your temporal lobes send nerves to your nose to smell. Your frontal lobe is in the front part of your brain and controls most of your personality. The frontal lobe controls some of your voluntary movement. The frontal lobe does allot for instance when you are searching for a word your frontal lobe is the lobe that does everything to put that word out to your vocals to produce that word.Inside the frontal lobe is the primary motor cortex which is the cortex which movement occurs, the motor cortex is what sends nerves to your spinal cord which moves your muscles to move your legs or arms.Damage is crucial to this part of the brain mostly because,it s the most important lobe in the brain,if the frontal lobe was damaged you could lose so many things, for example you could lose your hope or trust which are some crucial things needed in life.Without the frontal lobe the personality of each

The first Zeppelin was 420 feet long and at maximum velocity could go 17 miles per hour. (If any non Americans want measurements here they are 128.016 meters and 27.3588 kilometers per hour). This particular invention was created to solve a problem of a steerable and heavy duty (as in it can carry many passengers and large loads of cargo). This invention also played a large role in World War I because it was used for bombing raids and carrying cargo. Zeppelins also could be used for luxurious flights. Take the lz 129 Graf Zeppelin and the lz 130 Hindenburg for example they were both grand and lavish Zeppelins which carried many people. The Zeppelin originally used hydrogen gas due to its more efficient lift, but when the Hindenburg incident occurred they changed to less efficient helium gas. (It is a known fact that hydrogen gas is four times lighter than helium gas). Ferdinand von Zeppelin started the Luftschiff Zeppelin Company due to growing demand for Zeppelins mostly because of the war. Today, the Zeppelin leaves a small but known trace/legacy of filming sports (like Goodyear s Zeppelin) and recreation. (This is because of the Hindenburg incident which led to less popularity of the Zeppelin Airship.) This invention was also used for the first civilian bombing in history (as a military action anyhow). As of today we have a diminishing amount of helium in our atmosphere, but the market is still large for balloons. (Not like the balloons for the Zeppelin, but the balloons for little

It was part of the womenВґs reproductive health program (WRHP) which involved training of health care providers, advocacy and research. This intervention resulted in increase in family planningcounselling for women, longer continuation rates of contraceptives and increase in clinic attendance for family planning in the intervention areas. This is the point where one asks questions such as what do I need to do to achieve the overall goal of the campaign? In this case, one of the campaign objectives was to increase knowledge and positive attitudes towards modern contraceptives. In so doing, the campaign would be meeting the overall strategy which was to bring family planning to the public arena and to highlight its importance. Choosing an age bracket is also essential as one is able to seclude the target audience in order to make the campaign strategy more effective. The age bracket for women chosen was 18 30. This was also an appropriate age since it is the prime age for reproduction. One of the activities done was to disseminate the family planning message through national television. The airtime was donated by the prime minister then. This was effective as the message reached women throughout Russia and the neighboring countries. The campaign also used a disco event to promote family planning communication. It is the world s most consumed drug. Some physical effects include high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and hyperglycemia. Caffeine binds to our brain s adenosine receptors; preventing the chemical from binding with the receptors and making us tired. (This is what caffeine does to your brain, 2014) Caffeine is a receptor antagonist. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical substance present in tobacco. Some physical effects include heart disease, stroke, and depression. The nicotine molecule is shaped like a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine and its receptors are involved in many functions, including muscle movement, breathing, heart rate, learning, and memory. They also cause the release of other neurotransmitters and hormones that affect your mood, appetite, memory, and more. When nicotine gets into the brain, it attaches to acetylcholine receptors and mimics the actions of acetylcholine. (How Does Nicotine Act in the Brain? 2015) Nicotine is an agonist to ACH. Cocaine is a highly addictive drug synthetically derived from coca. Some physical effects of cocaine include increased heart rate, body temperature, and increased rate of breathing. Normally, dopamine is then recycled back into the transmitting neuron by a specialized protein called the dopamine transporter. If cocaine is present, it attaches to the dopamine transporter and blocks the normal recycling process, resulting in a buildup of dopamine in the synapse, which contributes to the pleasurable effects of cocaine.

In 1519, he landed of the coast of mexicowith about 600 troops, 16 horses, and some cannons. The armour they wore and the guns, horses, and cannons had never been seen by the indians before. Cohen s arguments about disagreeing animal s right that contains of two premises to conclude that animals cannot have rights, the premises have some contradictions. The first premise which is any beings can have rights if they have free moral judgement, is logically strong. It is strong due to the fact that all beings have to respect each other s rights if they understand what the judgement is. Like golden rule, beings treated each beings the same when the other beings understand. But, if there is something that make the beings to speak out, they can do so because other beings are treating it the same way. Beings can have rights because they understand that they have to fight for one if one does not
  • 18. Stress And Cancer Of Cancer Stress and Cancer Name Class Stress and Cancer Introduction The human body is an intricately interlinked organism. Every system of the body has a role to play in the well being of the other. The most prevalent disease of the modern age is cancer, and there has been considerable effort to determine the causes of cancer. Substantial research in this regard point to stress being one of the leading causes of cancer. The Impact of Stress on Cancer Cancer, medically called tumorigenesis (Thaker, Lutgendorf, Sood, 2007, p.430) occurs when cells in the body orient themselves for malignant growth. Such cells show self sufficiency in growth signals , are insensitive to anti growth signals and have limitless replicative potential (Thaker, Lutgendorf, Sood, 2007, p.430). Once a particular set of cells become malignant, the malignancy can spread to other set of cells in different organs due to crosstalk between the affected cells and their surrounding tissues and micro environments (Thaker, Lutgendorf, Sood, 2007, p.430). Current research is focusing on the role of neuropeptides and neurotransmitters in the occurrence of cancer. Researchers have observed that cancerous cells require nutrients and the diffusion of oxygen to proliferate malignantly. In this aspect, stress related hormones act as inhibitors or stimulants to cancerous growth depending upon the type of hormone and the type of cancer. It has been established that пЃў agnostic
  • 19. The Effect Of Western Culture Article Summary This article is focused on the effects of western culture, particularly the modern ideals of ultra thin bodies, on non western women. The author, Jaita Talukdar, decided to spend some time in India in order to conduct research on the topic. During her stay, she discovered many different things about these Indian women, including what motivates them to want to lose weight, their opinion on the current standards of beauty in western culture, and how these ideals have become ingrained into their culture. Talukdar touched base on the existing research by Suzanne Brenner regarding beauty standards in non western cultures, such as the idea of an in between mindset the ability of a person to actively participate in both traditional and modern worlds and alternative modernity which centers on the internal conflict to apply modernity while still conforming to the rules of tradition (Talukdar 112). These concepts were the starting point for her investigation, influencing the questions that she chose to ask. Alternative modernity was what inspired her theory of speculative modernity, in which a womancritiques both the traditional and modern ways before applying them to her life. Previous researchers like Hesse Biber chose to focus on how the western pageant circuit and the beauty industry brought these ideals into India, following the loosening of the strict traditions that came with the globalization of the country in the twentieth century. However, these

  • 21. Machiavelli s Attitude To Florence In 1494 In 1494, the ruling Florentine family, the Medicis, was expelled. Shortly after their expulsion, Savanorola, a Dominican religious zealot, took control. During this time, Italy suffered from intense political conflict. The city states of Florence, Milan, Venice, and Naples fought for control as did the papacy, France, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire. Each tried to play others off of others and engaged in blackmail and violence. When Machiavelli returned to Florencein 1494, Italywas invaded by Charles VIII of France. The events of this tumultuous era influenced Machiavelli s attitudes toward government and formed the background for his later pleas for unity. Savanorola s criticism of the Church brought the reign of pope Alexander short, excommunicating him in 1497. In 1498, Machiavelli entered the Florentine government as... NICE Review Essay Impact of the NICE guideline recommending cessation of antibiotic prophylaxis for prevention of infective endocarditis: before and after study: A Review Thornhill et al. s article on the cessation of antibiotic prophylaxis and its impact on infective endocarditis examined, both, prescriptions for antibiotics of a standard premedication dose (3g amoxicillin or 600mg clindamycin) and diagnoses or deaths due to infective endocarditis between January 2000 and April 2010. The time frame chosen for this study was critical due to the release of updated NICE guidelines, stating providers should cease use of any antibiotic prophylaxis for dental and other medical procedures. By examining the time surrounding the NICE guidelines, the researchers hoped to evaluate any relationship between premedicative prescriptions and incidents of infective endocarditis. They hypothesized that in order to see evidence that the NICE guidelines were valid, there would be minimal to no change in rate of infective endocarditis after the NICE guidelines became effective compared to before, even though the amount of prescription decreased. In the book, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer shows the connection between Chris McCandless and Henry David Thoreau. Within the book, Into the Wild, Krakauer reveals the philosophy of Transcendentalism through living deliberately, simplicity, and individualism. Redefining the Tragic The power of tragic heroes in literature is almost immeasurable in that they evoke multiple emotions within the reader. Through pain and suffering, heroes of tragedy fill the audience with not only terror and pity, but also relief through a cathartic experience. Over two thousand years ago, Aristotle first defined what characteristics make up a tragic hero. He claimed that heroes of tragedy must be fundamentally decent, of noble status, and eventually destroyed by a situation that exposes their one tragic flaw. Consider Chinua Achebes famous Things Fall Apart: the protagonist of the novel, the once mighty and respected warrior, Okonkwo of Umofia, is the paragon of the Aristotelian definition of a tragic hero. His suicide and loss of power within the tribe is not caused by his negative qualities, but rather his respect to his elders and their traditions. However, there are also characters of literature that do not fulfill all of Aristotle s requirements and still leave the reader with an overwhelming sense of tragedy. For instance, the main character of John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, the average and short tempered, George Milton, fails to meet several aspects of the ancient definition. Despite his low social status, George s murder of his mentally disabled companion, Lennie, consumes the reader with a feeling of both compassion and fear. Also consider The Good Earth by

  • 38. Vengeance In The Count Of Monte Cristo Vengeance in The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond Dantes, the protagonist in The Count of Monte Cristo, is a man on the verge of great happiness, but that is all dramatically and irreparably ripped away. Edmond Dantes is a character who is in search of revenge for those who wronged him. A character analysis of Dantes reveals that through his characteristics, vow of revenge, the symbolism in the death of Fernand, and the symbolism in the eventual fall of Danglars, Edmond Dantes portrays the archetype of a hero in search of revenge. The archetype of revenge centers around vengeance being the main goal of the protagonist. Warren Poland describes vengeance as the rage for retribution, festering till satisfied by destructive acts (Poland). This describes just how destructive the search for vengeance can be. In most stories where the overarching theme is about vengeance, the protagonist is sacrificing hope of a normal life for drowning his sorrow in the blood of those who wronged him. The theme of vengeance can improve any story by adding a feeling that the reader can connect with and understand. This feeling of pursuing an ultimate goal at any cost is most present when the hero is turned into a villain that may use twisted logic to justify harming, killing, or ruining the life of another, and yet the reader does not see him as a villain. Most readers support the hero in search of vengeance because it is a guilty pleasure that most are unwilling to give up, even if it breaks their moral code. The archetype of vengeance begins with a vow of revenge made by Dantes. This vow is important as it establishes the archetype of revenge; it was not supported by Abbe Faria, and represents the things that Dantes lost, has, and is willing to give up. According to biblestudytools, A vow is a solemn promise made to God to perform or to abstain from performing a certain thing , and this correlates with the vow that Dantes makes, as his vow is a verbal manifestation of Dantes commitment to revenge and helps establish the motif of vengeance at any cost (Smith). The vow made by Dantes carried heavy meaning; he had formed a terrible resolution and taken a fearful oath which meant that Dantes life was no longer his own, and his

The first sign of gender inequality I saw in this novel was rather subtle, a car slowed, and the boys inside called out compliments. Sister scowled fiercely at them... and based on the Sister s response to this, I believe catcalls would be a better term instead of compliments (Alvarez, 27). The article transitioned to family and mentioned that children stayed in their
  • 43. Shipwreck Narrator s Report Based on June Dwyer s article, Yann Martel s Life of Pi and the Evolution of the Shipwreck Narrative, the ages of characters in literature are directly proportional to their dominance over animals in shipwreck narratives. Dwyer expands on this when he discusses Tzvetan Todorov s human/animal relations: equal standing, subjective ownership, and complete dominance. Childlike characters customarily will treat animals as their equals without any desire to enforce control. Specifically, Dwyer employs the children s story Amos and Boris, by William Steig, to further explain the relationship. In the book, a lost mouse and an amiable whale become the best of friends as they travel back to Amos home in Africa. Steig purposely made both characters animals,... Once adolescents characters come into play, they begin to regard animals as their subjective accomplices rather than their companions. To further explain this, Dwyer brings up Walter Farley s book: The Black Stallion. Farley s shipwreck narrative contains an adolescent named Alec Ramsey stranded on a island with a horse named Black. Although they develop a strong friendship, Alec is evidently Black s master. Alec s dominance is shown when he mounts the horse and Farley confirms He felt sure that from that day on, the Black was his his alone! (Dwyer, 13). Earlier in the article Dwyer discussed how adolescents are eager to exercise their maturity , so Alec cheerfully raving after acquiring control of Black is an appropriate reaction. Lastly, adult characters in shipwreck narratives have no issues exhibiting dominance over animals, which leaves no room for friendship. To explore their content, Dwyer examines Daniel Defoe s shipwreck narrative, Robinson

Charleston s Water Pollution Going to the beach is always a fun way to spend an afternoon, but how would people feel if the next time they tried to catch a wave they were hit with plastic bottles and styrofoam. Charleston is such a beautiful city but, the harbor is overcome with pollution. This Pollution travels to the oceans and to the shores of South Carolina s beaches. The water is affecting Charleston s harbor but household water, local businesses, and marine life in the area. Water pollutionshould not be looked over and needs to be taken care of before it gets worse. More and more ways are being discovered to help treat water pollution around the world, but what needs to happen is to stop the pollution. Around the world water pollution is a definite obstacle;... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The litter has put the animals at such high risk of danger that most of these species are now endangered. Some ways the animals are harmed are suffocating on plastic bags, getting trapped in bottle holders, or being poisoned by the toxins in some litter. These fish becoming poisoned by the toxins can carry disease and end up on your plate. Local seafood restaurants or grocery stores cannot tell if the fish they serve to you has been affected by the hazardous pollution. The fishermen that catch the fish locally cannot see a difference between the diseased fish and normal ones either so the pollution in the community deposits into the harbor can come right back. The local population also drinks the water that has been filtered and sometimes contains dangerous minerals. This water runs through showers and faucets in homes that people use every day. These reasons all concern the local community and they should because water pollution is a serious problem and if people do not take action immediately than Charleston s water could become a wasteland instead of a fun afternoon. Most people believe that the pollution is too much for them to handle, but there are multiple ways everyone can get involved and help out the community. Dozens of volunteers filled burlap sacks with frayed rope, empty liquor bottles, flattened drink cups, and fragmented pieces of plastic that were pulled from the marsh (Elmore 1). These people volunteered to help the community by picking up trash at
  • 45. Analysis Of Lather And Nothing Else It takes a special type of person to not act in accordance with the majority. However, once over the mob mentality people could see things in a different light. In Hernando Tellez s short story Lather and Nothing Else , the protagonist, who is a barber, must have the foresight to make the right call. Two rival political movements are at odds with one another in the setting of the story, 1800 s Latin America. The barber is secretly a rebel and is surprised when a customer of his is Captain Torres, who is a pro government enforcer. Even though they are of rival parties, the barber throughout the short storycontemplates whether or not he should murder the man. Ultimately, he decides not to killthe captain because he values his reputation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This ties back to the idea that the decision he made was the right one. The barber has a personal connection with Captain Tellez, a murderer. He watched him hang four of his former comrades after a skirmish between them occurred; the barber further incentive to kill him. However, using foresight and reasoning, he realizes that killing him would be futile as there will be more to take his place. The barber is realizing the futility of the potential aftermath that could follow by killing Tellez. Thinking to himself he says; What is to be gained by it? Nothing. Others and still others keep coming, and the first kill the second...and so on until everything becomes a sea of blood (Tellez 3). In this quotation the protagonist questions his motives. The fleeting nationalism that the rebel movement ensued upon him makes him ponder. However, it is soon followed up by a powerful one worded sentence, Nothing as the barber makes up his mind. Also, the author uses phrases such as others and still others and so on to give us a sense of the futility of the situation. It paints a picture in the reader s mind of the amount of power and people the government has against the rebels. This ties into the main idea that by saving himself and sticking to what he knows, rather than kill Captain Tellez, was a good decision. In conclusion, in Hernando Tellez s short story, Lather and Nothing
